Favorite Episodes of "THE FLASH" Season Two (2015-2016)

Below is a list of my favorite episodes from Season Two of "THE FLASH", the CW adaptation of the D.C. Comics hero, the Flash. Created by Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, and Andrew Kreisberg; the series stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen aka the Flash:

FAVORITE EPISODES OF "THE FLASH" SEASON TWO (2015-2016)

1. (2.11) "The Reverse-Flash Returns" - When Earth-2's Dr. Harrison "Harry" Wells learns how to induce Cisco Ramon's new ability, they discover that Eobard Thawne, last year's Big Bad, is still alive. Iris West says good-bye to her dying mother. And Patty Spivot, the new girlfriend of Barry Allen aka the Flash and Joe West's new partner, discovers Barry's secret.

2. (2.22) "Invincible" - This season's Big Bad, Zoom, unleashes an army of evil Earth-2 meta-humans, who are lead by Laurel Lance aka Black Canary's Earth-2 doppelganger, Black Siren.

3. (2.14) "Escape From Earth-2" - On Earth-2, Team Flash asks for help from an unexpected source to find Zoom's lair. And on Earth-1, Caitlin Snow, the team's bio engineer, tries to perfect the Velocity-9 formula so Earth-2's Flash aka Jay Garrick can stop the Geomancer.

4. (2.04) "The Fury of Firestorm" - Months after the death of Ronnie Raymond, Dr. Martin Stein's body begins to destabilize and Team Flash helps him find a new partner with whom he can merge into Firestorm.

5. (2.23) "The Race of His Life" - With Zoom's true plans revealed, Team Flash fears Barry's resolve to do whatever it takes to stop the villain on the heels of a personal tragedy.

Honorable Mention: (2.21) "The Runaway Dinosaur" - On the heels of Harry's experiment to restore Barry's speed, the latter finds himself in the Speed Force and tries to return to his old life.

Ramble of the month March 2024: Phase 5 of the Batman Begins-Led DCEU

With April set aside for an autism-centric monthly ramble and February utilised for phase 5 of my 90’s-based alternate MCU, March takes on the role of show-casing phase 5 of my hypothetical Batman Begins-led DC film-verse. As DC is more prone to content reboots than Marvel, this latest phase will actually ramp up to just such a reboot, with “phase 6” actually being phase 1 of a new DC film-verse. Unlike the real DCEU, that reboot will be better planned, but first let’s re-cap the previous four phases.

Phase 1, of course, acts as a means of establishing the DC Universe for film fans prior to forming the Justice League. Phase 2 then builds on that foundation while also causing a schism within the Justice League by adapting the “Tower of Babel” story arc into Justice League 2. Green Arrow 2 then proves Batman’s point about safeguarding against rogue heroes, which some films in phase 3 follow up on. Phase 4 then focuses on the falls of many heroes, some of which stay down and some of which return. However, as phase 4 ended, Hal Jordan was revealed to have gone rogue, which phase 5 will pick up from. This is how the phase 5 slate would shape up overall.

Compared to past phases, phase 5 is only half the size, and while the opening film deals with the issue of Hal Jordan becoming Parallax, most of the other films are one-shots or sequels to tell some interesting stories ahead of the Flashpoint film. This film is based on the events of the Justice League story arc The Final Hour, in which the Justice League and others try to stop an alien being called the Sun Eater from devouring Earth’s sun, only for Hal Jordan to ultimately sacrifice himself to save Earth by absorbing the Sun Eater and reigniting the sun. The film version would be slightly different in numerous details, but by-and-large the main thrust of the story would remain the same. The League would be the main focus, with Luthor, a few members of future super-team the Legion of Superheroes and a couple of others being heavily featured due to the story arc involved. The Doom Patrol and Suicide Squad are also featured to lesser degrees during scenes showing the wider crisis in what is essentially a superhero disaster film.

Direction-wise, I’d put this film in the hands of the Russo brothers based on their work for the MCU, especially Infinity War and Endgame in the Avengers run of films. Indeed, like Infinity War and Endgame, I also gave the Russos direction of Justice League: Armageddon to keep things consistent across both films. In terms of cast, most cast members have appeared on prior films, with only the characters from Dusk down to Sensor Girl being new cast members coming in fresh on this film.

In the first of our one-shot films, we get a solo outing for Batman’s original protégé Dick Grayson as he tries to clean up the corruption of Bludhaven by working for their local police force. As the film progresses, Nightwing finds himself caught between local crime lord Blockbuster and a plot involving the infamous Court of Owls of Gotham legend. Outside Patrick Schwarzenegger reprising the role of Dick Grayson, the cast is completely new to this DCEU, and in honour of his great work on crime-centric films, I’ve picked Guy Ritchie to serve in the director role.

When DC and WB did an animated Killing Joke adaptation, they had the right idea in terms of expanding the story beyond the Alan Moore-written graphic novel. However, they expanded it incorrectly by having an unrelated preceding 30 minutes that served more to facilitate Bruce Timm’s shipping of a Bruce-Barbara relationship than to make a well-expanded narrative. This film begins with the Joker being apprehended, hatching his scheme in Arkham, and then a short while later, we get the original Killing Joke plot in the film’s middle.

The end is then expanded, first by taking from a prose novel adaptation I’ve read where Batman laughing with the Joker turns into Batman almost giving in to the temptation to kill Joker. After this, Joker sees a woman who he thinks is the dead wife from his flashbacks and breaks out to “find the truth”. When Batman confronts Joker for a third time, the question is left hanging as to whether the Joker’s past was true or not, and a post-credits scene sets up for Barbara becoming Oracle. Direction-wise, I figure that only Christopher Nolan would do well adapting this material into a live-action narrative. Casting-wise, the film is mostly existing cast reprising past roles, with only the characters linked to Joker’s back-story being fresh castings.

This film gives us a solo film outing for Supergirl that is partly based on the first season of the character’s Arrowverse TV show. In other words, we see Kara starting out on her own life in another city and having to clash with her villainous aunt and uncle, as well as Indigo, a time-displaced villain in the Brainiac family tree. For direction, I’ve picked Reese Witherspoon as I know in recent years she’s taken up production and is very passionate about female-led stories and story-telling, so I think she’d be a great fit to make a directorial debut on a character like Supergirl.

For the penultimate phase 5 film, we’re giving the Birds of Prey super-team their chance to shine, albeit better than they did in the real DCEU. More comics-accurate castings and character selections, including leaving out Harley Quinn (who, if you remember my phase 4 ramble, is killed off in the last Suicide Squad film). In this film, we see Barbara recruit a number of street-level heroes to tackle a criminal group known as the Secret Six. The film follows up on plot threads from Knightfall, Knightsend and Killing Joke, and also uses Cassandra Cain as Batgirl like in the comics, another elements the real DCEU Birds of Prey got wrong. Patty Jenkins of the real DCEU’s Wonder Woman films helms the project from a directorial standpoint.

During the events of Justice League: Armageddon, Barry Allen’s Flash became lost in the timestream. When he gets out, he enters an alternate reality where Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war, and many heroes are missing or dead, including Barry’s speedster alter ego. Thus begins a mission to learn the truth of why events have changed, and the climax will reboot the DCEU. While this film simply uses the title of Flashpoint, it’s based more on the DC animated version from the DCAMU as that’s the main Flashpoint story I’ve seen and recall. Of course, the rest of the alternative DCEU I’ve laid out prior to this film alters some other aspects as well, including how Barry exits the timestream and why history was changed. Direction-wise, I had to pick Robert Zemeckis just because as the guy who directed the Back to the Future trilogy and the 2009 Disney version of A Christmas Carol, he is probably the best director for anything with a time travel component.

This concludes our phase 5 for the alternate DCEU, and this specific version of the DCEU. When I do phase 6 on my 90’s MCU, the first (and for now only) phase of my rebooted hypothetical DCEU will be hot on its heels. So, until next time, ta-ta for now.

Legends of Tomorrow: what if the show was more cryptic about its premise and characters when it came out?

Legends of Tomorrow was a really interesting show. Set in the Arrowverse, it aired between 2016 and 2022, and had the characteristic of being the spin-off of three shows at the same time: Arrow, The Flash and Constantine.

It was an original concept, because there is no team of Legends who wander around time and space while facing Aberrations and trying to preserve the correct timeline in the DC Universe. As a result, there were no clues about its members and what were they supposed to do. Even when this spin-off was announced, back in 2015, people were calling it “a TV show dedicated to team-ups”. Some even speculated that it would have been called “The Atom”, and presumably featured Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer teaming up with various heroes during this show.

What was fascinating about it is that, with so little information about it, pure speculation was turning into hype, since everyone was curious about what was going to happen.

Then, the teaser was released, and it featured Oliver Queen and Barry Allen talking to the team of protagonists, with the help of Rip Hunter, who introduced the concept and the main villain of the first season, Vandal Savage.

While this was enough to still generate some forms of hype, because, after all, it was a team of superheroes set in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash, so the closest they had to a Justice League at that point, I believe that revealing the key points (and characters) right away was a mistake.

After all, keeping things vague could have been helpful in that everyone would start speculating and making theories about what was going to happen. If you think about it, making fan theories and suggestions regarding a superhero movie or TV show is part of the spectacle.

So, I was wondering: what if Legends of Tomorrow had kept its premise and characters as vague as possible?

Here is what I imagine the teaser could have looked like: Oliver Queen and Barry Allen are still featured, but they are not with the other heroes on the rooftop. Instead, they talk to Arthur Darvill, but his role is not revealed right away. He simply explains to him that he is in need of a group of people for a special mission. Oliver and Barry might explain that Star City and Central City need their heroes, but they will help him find the help he needs. However, he specifies that they do not have to be heroes, saying “you don’t have to be a hero, in order to be a legend”. Cut to the title.

Fans are left with barely any information about what all that could mean. Perhaps, some could notice that his clothes are similar to an outfit that time traveller Rip Hunter wears in the comics, and, perhaps, the fact that they casted an actor from Doctor Who might have been a clue. As such, they figure out that time travel is going to be featured.

However, what about the members of this team?

Since Oliver Queen and Barry Allen were talking to him, then characters from both Arrow and The Flash could have been available. Perhaps, Black Canary or John Diggle could have joined, as well as other heroes like Ray Palmer and Firestorm, since it would be fitting to include characters that are important enough in their mother shows, but that can still be removed from them without taking an important piece of the main characters’ mythos. Maybe, even villains like Deathstroke, The Huntress or Weather Wizard could have been included.

Then, there are the other DC shows. After all, Constantine was recently cancelled, so he could have, easily joined, as well as other characters that the show teased, like Spectre or Doctor Fate.

Gotham was not meant to be part of that universe, but, who knew: maybe, Batman-related characters could have made an appearance. Especially if the show was indeed about time travel: perhaps, characters like Robin or Batgirl, if not Batman himself, could have, at some point, travelled back in time to when Bruce Wayne was still a kid.

Titans was already in development, so the inclusion of the Teen Titans was not to be excluded, since nobody even knew what was the series going to be about.

And, finally, there was the upcoming Supergirl series. Perhaps, some could have speculated that they would have justified Superman’s lack of appearances on this show because he was going to appear on this new one.

Imagine the crazy fan theories about this show including both Batman and Superman. It could have been extremely unlikely because Season 1 would have debuted 2 months before Batman v. Superman, but fans could have dreamt about this show being a secret Justice League show that didn’t want to be called Justice League.

As the new season came, fans could have started looking for clues. Maybe, whenever a character came back, people could have thought “oh, they remind us that this character is still around so that they can be included in the spin-off”.

Even the annual crossover could have been used for this. Maybe, the plot could have still revolved around Vandal Savage chasing both Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and, since the show would have debuted a few weeks later, it could have been a clear indication that at least one of them will become a key character there.

You see, the possibilities could have been endless, and, who knows, maybe it would have been a more successful show. Of course, there is also the chance that fans could have felt tricked as they watched the actual pilot, and, perhaps, it could have tanked.

A Cass with Many Faces

About a month ago, specifically on Cassandra Cain’s fictional birthday, I made a few posts dedicated to one of the fictional characters that have had a visible, measurable impact on my life, and has continued to do so since I first picked up an issue featuring her in 2004. I was twelve years old at the time and the issue in question was the fifth of a six-issue arc starting off Superman/Batman. I picked up the issue because Superboy -- my then-favorite comic book character -- was on the cover including some other characters I was mildly familiar with. And the character that I came away with the most intrigue in was, of course, Cassandra Cain.

Next time I was at my LCS, I picked up an issue of her solo series that was still ongoing at the time [Batgirl (2000-2006) #47] and instantly fell in love.

I’ve made posts before about how a scattershot strategy can be a good thing when talking about characters in multimedia franchises. Characters are more likely to endure in these environments if they are given more presence, and more significance, when more voices are advocating for them.

In the past, I was speaking about my experience in seeing the opposite happen with Cassandra.

I can honestly say I would have never checked out Cassandra Cain had it not been for her minor appearance in a silly comic four years after her debut. I was twelve, and still fairly new to DC Comics having grown up with a Marvel loving family, and as the years went on and Cass was diminished by poor corporate decisions, I learned a lesson about strategy with characters in these franchises. If they are not seen outside of their lane, if people aren’t exposed to them outside of their one series no matter how fantastic and great it is, when that series is canceled and they are mishandled, there is not going to be any protection for them.

Bad comics happen all the time, bad adaptations happen all of the time, it’s the nature of the business. But for the thousands of terrible Batman stories that have been published and the hundreds of head-scratching Ninja Turtles adaptations, there have been, they continue to prevail and good things happen to those characters’ IP because there is enough material out there to keep people coming back.

This is all a long introduction to get into saying that we are starting 2020 in one of the most unique and unprecedented ways we could start it as Cassandra Cain fans. There is, I’m pretty sure for the first time in the two decades of this character’s existence, an almost scattershot approach to getting as much Cass content out in a blitz as possible while aligning with the first time she has appeared in multimedia outside of video game DLC only a few hardcore fans will ever get a hold of.

But, as to be expected, not all interpretations of Cass are going to be the most helpful or similar to the character as we know her. And while I try to think strategically, it’s important to acknowledge these differences outright. Because if this is someone’s intro to her character, it can paint what they see and expect from her for the rest of their experience.

I can’t say how good or bad that’ll be, I am the fangirl who jumped on board when Jeff Loeb was writing and Ed McGuinness was drawing. My quality receptors will forever be in question to more purist fans! But I do want to start out by saying that most things are valid when it comes to starting out with a medium as ridiculous and unintelligible as comics, and we can destroy each other over the remaining 10% any day.

Let’s talk about some Casses.

Shadow of the Batgirl (2020)

If you or someone you know is at all interested in reading more Cassandra Cain and the 73 issues of her original series are intimidating, there is a simple solution that has been given to us by Sarah Kuhn and Nicole Goux, Shadow of the Batgirl.

In a very short first-reaction review I did the week this graphic novel came out, I mentioned that I was teary the entire time I read this graphic novel because it was just so darn impactful and endearing. And that continues to be the case.

This is a YA graphic novel aimed at introducing young new readers to Cassandra and a world that desperately needs her gifts to escape the shadows of her past and regrets in order to fully realize her potential for the future. And it is both heartwarming and gorgeous.

One of the things I have hit on for years when it comes to Cassandra Cain’s treatment in comics is that it has felt that for a good half of a decade if not more, what she lacked more than anything was a consistent advocate on the publishing side of things. Fans and decent sales -- which, to be clear, her meager appearances and even the majority of her solo did definitively have -- were never going to be powerful enough on their own to give her a publishing opportunity if there were not writers and artists there to provide good stories.

In 2020, more than any other year, I feel like we finally see the fruition of these things coming true. Sarah Kuhn’s blurbs and interviews have been filled with personal love and detail for the character and her importance, which only fueled how great it was when the Shadow of the Batgirl did come out and surpass almost all expectations.

This is a retelling and reinventing of Cassandra’s origin story told completely from her perspective from the beginning.

One of the lasting critiques of Cassandra’s beginnings in comics has always been her silence and lack of voice at the very start of her career. While sometimes these complaints grew to hyperbolism and would deny provably existent agency -- and to be clear, there’s still a lot of that to a concerning degree to this day -- there is truth to the criticism. Cassandra’s internal narration was not provided for almost a year after her first appearance which is an alienating tactic to use for a character meant to be latched onto by readership. Even when handled well, the thoughts behind this choice still deserve examination.

This was further complicated by later reveals that Cassandra’s difficulty with expression was in part due to her aneurotypical processing. These are not independently bad choices to make narratively, I have gone on for thousands of words before on how important I believe Cassandra’s dyslexia is, but the shakey start to giving the perspective of an aneurotypical character a definitive voice to tell her own story is right to be critiqued.

Shadow of the Batgirl completely circumvents this by giving Cass a clear voice from the start and focusing her central relationships on the power of expression and individuality while giving her plenty of characters of varying backgrounds and abilities to bounce her own understanding off of.

In some parts, this greatly enforced Kuhn’s take on making Cass’ story a teenage coming of age story that she has proven skillful at in YA novels. It also allowed her to directly correct many of the wrongs that have been long criticized about Cassandra’s original series, such as having Barbara Gordon (a physically disabled character who should and has shown more sensitivity and nuance outside of her terrible capital-M-Moment in Cass’ series) embrace and love Cassandra for her aneurotypical perspective.

But, for those of us who adore and have attached to Cassandra for her disabilities and portrayals of mental illness in the past, there is also some nuance and representation that has been left on the cutting room floor for this new origin.

Namely, while Cassandra is shown to be perplexed by and struggling with books in the graphic novel, there is not the desperation and frustration that we actively see her undergoing throughout the original Batgirl (2000-2006) series. By issue #58 of a 73-issue comic book solo, Cassandra is actively struggling to read “It was,” and her insecurities toward it are used and manipulated by the villain by the end of the series.

However, Cassandra of the Shadow of the Batgirl shows some capacity to read from early on, and her struggles with reading are not the subject of conversation in the novel, so how much her limitations are a function of dyslexia and how much are a function of her childhood is left up to debate.

A debate with many questions that do require an answer since the form of her isolation and abuse by her far-less rounded character of a father in this graphic novel has been changed dramatically.

While I am giving these critiques and do think that we should be mindful and conscious of their removal for those fans who are seeking out those types of stories to read, I do not want to at all give the impression that this is a bad comic.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I would argue with just about anyone that this is the gold standard for Cassandra Cain stories printed in the last fifteen years, and for what I miss about the original iteration of Cass stories it can easily be exchanged for the new voice and new direction for her character this graphic novel provides for us.

Many of these critiques can be chalked up to the graphic novel being just that, a self-contained graphic novel and not a 73-issue monthly publication. And I believe its art and story are a great deal more consistent and appealing than many eras of the original series as a result.

I love its tributes, its characterizations, its purpose, and its focus above all else. There is also something just utterly charming about having Cassandra’s first well handled romance in comics come from a YA novelist who obviously understands the character and also understands what readers want in a non-toxic and adorable story.

I love the focus on Cassandra’s journey being on self-compassion, forgiveness, and the earnest belief that people can change. Including yourself, if you make the choice.

It is a good book, the best for Cassandra Cain in ages, and one I bought no less than three times already to show my support. And in just one week on my classroom bookshelf, I’ve already seen it be avidly read by five students. And those are just the ones I catch!

I would also be remiss not to mention that after complaining about this pet peeve of mine for years, that it’s happened. It took us twenty-one years but we finally did it, guys. We got a costume that Cassandra Cain got to make and design herself! And not only did she get one but she got two! An adorable (and hilarious) DIY Batgirl costume, and then ending on the high note of her official Batgirl costume to swing through the city in!

This book is precious and I hope it is the start of something new and exciting in the future. Even if that new and exciting is simply a sequel graphic novel, I will be HERE for it, and supporting it and Sarah Kuhn all the way.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)

Oh, boy. If there was one reason I was scared to make this post, it was because of this film.

Before I get too deep into this I want to first state my position on a few of the controversies that have cropped up online with concerns to this movie and its portrayal of Cassandra Cain.

First and foremost, I have no interest in telling people how they should or shouldn’t be offended on the grounds of representation and erasure. Not being able to or simply being unwilling to forego criticisms of tropes or insensitivities perpetrated by this or any other film are completely valid experiences. I have been that person in regards to other things, and I have also been someone whose first exposure to serious issues were the stances people took with regards to protesting certain media.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has faults and plays into certain erasures (one of which I’ll discuss more below) that people may be unwilling to let go of. If that is the case for people you know or see online, you should accept and support them. Listen to them.

But I do think we should also support people who love this movie for good reason. I enjoy this movie, but it’s not life-changing for me. I support it in the hopes of seeing more and better.

There are students I have who now are wearing merch and drawing fanart of the Birds of Prey, picking up the comics for the first time, because of their exposure to the hype and “girl power” of this movie. Some adults needed this movie to be some hopeful change for them and I support them too.

We’re lucky to be alive at a time where a superhero movie is so completely told from a feminine perspective, with a huge diversity of filmmakers behind it providing female voices at every level from acting to casting to scripting to directing. We’re lucky that there’s such a diversity of the cast. I want this to continue.

I hope that it continues to do better in theaters, and I know there are some murmurs of poor box office returns for it. I hope that doesn’t affect future projects. We’ll see.

All of that out of the way, we need to talk about its use of Cassandra Cain.

The joke I’ve made with my friends is that the best thing to do with this movie is to start getting in the habit of calling the young girl at the heart of this plot “Kassandra Kane” instead because the connection between this character and that of Cassandra Cain is fairly negligible. They are both young women of East Asian descent who pop up in Gotham.

I happen to like both characters, but there’s an obvious difference between one focused on as a main character and hero of her own story and one focused on as a supporting character who has plots happen to her. Neither is a bad thing, but my preferences obviously rest with the former.

It’s the fact that they were supposed to be the same character that seems to baffle most people. Myself included.

This may have been a move more suited for a character with less history and expectation on her before her big debut, like Sin who is Dinah’s adopted daughter in the comics and already connected to the Birds of Prey, or the character who clearly inspired Kassandra Kane, Ditto from the Black Canary (2015-2016) series.

I also think that adaptation that dramatically changes Cass wouldn’t necessarily be a terrible thing either. With some rewrites and some more agency, a younger and more hardened Cass from the streets could have also worked with the movie they were trying to make -- perhaps have David Cain be Black Mask’s main enforcer rather than Victor Zsasz. Give Cassandra’s connection to the plot more character-oriented and have her liberation work in tandem with the liberation of the adult women.

The options were there, and there are critiques to be made, but the movie also knew what it wanted to be and spent its script and filming time focused on maintaining the continuity and integrity of the adult female characters who it probably could justify putting in the rated-R situations their fights got them in more than they could young Kassie Kane.

One of the no doubt unintended consequences of this has been that online discourse revolving around Cass vs. Kass has been in justifying the decisions one team has over the other in claims of racism and ableism.

Now, to be clear, my ability to speak with authority on either of those points is minimal. I’m an ally but not a voice of those communities and I want that to be as upfront as possible. I can only speak from personal experience in the realms of being a woman and being someone who lives with and has survived mental illness. And I can speak as a critic of media at large.

There are racist and ableist connotations in many things, and I am not going to deny that those conversations are relevant and need to happen in regards to Cass’ original portrayals or in this film. They do. I know even in my first viewing I wondered how it was deemed so unimportant and so uncritical to give even a moment where Kass could display dyslexia or any other form of disability when we had entire sequences dedicated to backgrounds of characters who appeared for half a second of screentime.

But I’m seeing a lot of discourse that is especially leveling claims of racism toward Cass’ original portrayals and not always looking at the voices of fans of color who debate that argument. But I also see people outright denying any critique of Cass’ original portrayals having overtones to them that are unsavory. The answer is to maybe settle for something less radical than both positions.

Like there is no ethical consumption under capitalism and we should murder the patriarchy. Just like Birds of Prey taught me.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, Kassandra Kane was a lot of fun, but it’s a 1/5 for adaptation which is bizarre for a movie that was firing on all cylinders for almost literally every other character that came on screen.

Batman and the Outsiders (2019-) #10

When it comes to consistent monthly comic publishing, the pickings for Cassandra Cain have been incredibly thin for years, arguably since the end of her own solo in 2006. But since the DC initiative “Rebirth” in 2016, an era has been entered where, with a few months here or there as the exception, Cass has been appearing in some comic each month.

That seems like a small thing to celebrate, especially when the quality of monthly content can vary so much depending on the creative team, but it has been a hugely important development that Cass has been put on a team book for over a year now.

Bryan Hill is a comic veteran at this point, publishing comics independently and from both Marvel and DC, making him quite busy, but one thing I’ve really appreciated as a Cassandra Cain fan is that he has consistently shown love and appreciation for her character.

The Cassandra that features in Batman and the Outsiders is arguably the closest the character is to her original solo series on paper, and Hill has weaved her origin story and relationship with Lady Shiva into the overarching plot of the entire series.

For me, Batman and the Outsiders has been a little slow in its story structure, and I worry about how that will affect the future of the book and whether or not it will continue as an ongoing after Hill’s planned departure, but his character focus is also my style of comics to read. And make no mistake that there is a plethora of character development and examination in every issue.

Cassandra is sharing her page time with her Outsider teammates, but this can be a good thing. Development is easier for characters who have consistent character interactions, and I have always been a firm believer that the Outsiders as a team concept works the best for Cassandra’s specific needs. This plays out and the team consisting of Bruce Wayne, Jefferson Pierce, Tatsu Yamashiro, and Duke Thomas all compliment each other and compliment Cass very well.

I do want to mention that I love this book and think it’s great reading for Batman fans, too, even with Bruce’s reduced presence. And I think the snub the Duke and Cass are receiving in other Bat titles like Peter Tomasi’s Batman: Alfred Pennyworth R.I.P. just last week is cruelly shortsighted.

But, hey, Tomasi being dismissive and backhanded toward members of the Batfamily outside of his preferred five. Guess it’s just another Wednesday.

Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey (2020-) #1 (of 4)

After the complete circus that has been made of the Black Label Birds of Prey title meant to tie-in with the movie -- one DC thought to give to Brian Azzarello who vocally despises Harley Quinn and is divisive (to say the very least) in his treatment of high profile female characters that he does say he likes -- I wasn’t expecting DC to come through in aligning movie buzz with their comic publications. To be clear, DC has always sucked at doing this and I really didn’t think it was special to the BoP movie.

When Conner and Palmiotti got to announce their own tie-in for the movie that was supposed to be more fun and use more of the same characters, I was intrigued but also a little concerned about how this team would handle it. I can like or dislike their work depending on the project.

But my god, were they absolutely on when it came to this first issue of their four-issue miniseries.

I didn’t think I’d be recommending fans go pick up the first issue of the Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey miniseries, but I am absolutely doing that for any fans of the movie who, like me, enjoyed it but wished a better Cassandra Cain adaptation had been woven into the plot.

Amanda Conner’s history with the character of Cass and with the Birds of Prey, in general, is actually interesting. While she is regarded for her art and her storytelling now, when she first started at DC it was art only in the credits, but those credits included a BoP arc and several fun covers for the latter half of Cassandra’s Batgirl (2000-2006). When she later had the opportunity to write comics along with doing their art, she even had Cass (albeit very chattily) feature in a rare team-up with Power Girl and Wonder Woman in the Wonder Woman (2006-2011) #600 special.

And, of course, the husband and wife team have become industry heavy hitters thanks to their smash hits with multiple Harley Quinn solo series.

This is a fun and cartoonishly violent miniseries that plays to their styles properly, but the characterizations in the first issue struck me as very true and very calculated. Cassandra Cain does not speak in this entry, but that allows Conner to stretch her artistic muscles in making Cass’ actions and expressions give a lot of character to her role. Which already shows more restraint and understanding for the character than many others have with Cass -- including Conner’s freshman efforts at writing Cass herself.

Cass isn’t alone in the little joys of this comic. There are overt references to Conner and Palmiotti’s Harley Quinn miniseries and solos that place this non-mainstream comic in a more nebulous space than the Black Label imprint would initially make you think, and the strong characters feel as though they walked off of the pages of their current mainstream efforts. All of which I greatly appreciate.

Not to mention on the front of queer representation, while Harley is a mess, I’m glad that I can unabashedly relate to her as a gay mess without obfuscation this time.

If there’s any comic that new fans brought on by the Birds of Prey movie are likely to pick up themselves, it’ll probably be this one. Which is a great thing because it seems like an honest effort with strong roots in the original comic source material for everyone -- including Cass this time.

Shame I can’t recommend it to my middle school students who are loving the movie. Though, I suppose, if they are watching a rated-R movie they’re probably sneaking to Black Label comics too. Little scamps.

DCeased: Unkillables (2020) #1 (of 3)

I cannot believe the wholesome Batfamily content I’ve craved for a decade needs the zombie apocalypse to happen.

While I read DCeased last year and didn’t hate it in the vein that I thought I was going to due to it being a zombie apocalypse AU in a superhero universe that seemed to keenly pull from the surprising successes of Marvel’s efforts, I never imagined that it would join the ranks as continued Cassandra Cain content vehicles.

It must be the sign of a good decade, right? Bats are lucky, indeed.

While DCeased proper dealt with the aftermath of the Anti-Life Equation that was Totally Not a Zombie Virus as they kept telling us over and over again, it was pretty closely tied to the most main of main DC heroes and heroines and their families as they attempted to survive and escape the hordes. We didn’t see many other fan-favorite but not quite A-tier heroes’ efforts until the tie-in comics began coming out.

I, as a Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Mister Miracle/Big Barda fan adored A Good Day to Die, but I never saw DCeased: Unkillables coming. And even when it was announced I said to my dear friends “This will either be very good or very bad.”

I need to put more faith into Tom Taylor, he really hasn’t let me down just yet.

In Unkillables, we follow the days after the Anti-Life Equation is released on Earth now through the eyes of two teams -- one helmed by Deathstroke, whose unique physiology allows him to recover from infection and is now joining other supervillains in a doomsday cult led by Vandal Savage; one helmed by Jason Todd, whose unique position as the family rebel has apparently left him out of the loop enough to not die with Bruce, Dick, and Tim in the series proper, but not so out of the loop that he can’t access the cave and the heart monitors Bruce creepily keeps on track of all their other family and friends, letting him reunite with his estranged sister Cassandra and Jim Gordon. Who is just as confused as you are that Batman kept a heart monitor tracker on him without asking. Also, Ace the Bathound and I love it.

This is the first of three issues, but it fits a lot of character work and relationships into those pages, which if you’re paying attention, is the sort of writing that seems to be most helpful with Cassandra Cain's appearances.

I am hoping that everything continues to work well for this team, even knowing that we are going to have bloodshed and death along the way, but I think that the setting of making the last stand in an orphanage protecting children is the exact kind of thing these three characters would be united to do together in the zombie apocalypse.

This is a fun, albeit bloody and morbid, comic that is worth picking up for anyone who misses Cassandra being Batgirl as much as I do.

Also wow that family photo with Cass alongside her brothers and father. It took us this long to finally get one, huh.

Worth it. Suck it, Tomasi.

I have a lot of love for Cassandra, and a lot of opinions as well. Obviously! But what I love more than anything is to enjoy good stories with other people, and I’m hopeful and joyful that there seems to be more and more of those things intersecting on the horizon.

#3: “I've done more for the entire comic book industry than anyone in 30 years!”

While he's not exactly as famous as Stan Lee or Jack Kirby, Mark Millar is a well known name in the comic book community. He's worked for both DC and Marvel, as well as some third party companies. He's written iconic stories that have taken the superhero genre and comic book medium to a darker level with stories like Civil War, Old Man Logan, and Superman: Red Son (their quality may vary, but the problems they had were buffed out when they were given film adaptations). He's also the creator of several original characters like the Secret Service and Kick-Ass. Then again, he was also behind Trouble (and a lot of other bad comics), but nobody's perfect.

Whether you like him or not, this is a man who's been writing for comic books since he was in high school, so it's safe to say, he knows a lot about the medium. But Astruc just has to be the one to say he knows more when Millar proposed the idea that all unique superpowers may have been thought of.

Yes. He really had the gall to say that his show is that groundbreaking to an experienced comic book writer.

Now, we could debate what kind of superpower or creative idea could be seen as “unique” or “original” for hours, but that's not the point I am trying to make. But I have an idea on how to rebut this argument. Astruc claims that his show has created more unique superpowers than the entire comic book industry in the past three decades? I'm going to show how the superpowers aren’t as original as he thinks they are by listing off examples from the past two decades.

Ladybug's Lucky Charm – The Tornado of Creation from Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu (2011), the result of the Ninja combing their powers, which uses the area around it to create a new object or weapon to take down whatever threat they face (like turning random debris or rubble to create a giant slingshot. Yes, that really happened).

Cat Noir's Cataclysm – Kitazaki/Dragon Orphnoch Kamen Rider 555 (2003) has the power to turn anything he touches into ash.

Rena Rouge's Mirage – Neopolitan and Emerald's Semblances from RWBY (First used in 2014 and 2015 respectively). Neopolitan can use her Semblance to create illusions that shatter like glass when touched, while Emerald can induce hallucinations for a single person at a time.

Carapace's Shelter – Steven Universe (2013) can use his shield or bubble to defend himself and others against enemies.

Queen Bee's Venom – Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender (2006) uses chi-blocking attacks to paralyze her opponents, as well as prevent them from using their bending powers.

Viperion's Second Chance – Tracer from Overwatch (2016) can use her Recall to briefly jump back in time, reloading her weapons and healing any injuries she has.

Pegasus' Voyage – Cisco Ramon/Vibe from The Flash (first used in 2016, though the comic version first appeared in 2011) can create small portals called “breaches” to travel through.

Ryuko's Wind, Water and Lightning Dragon – Laxus and Juvia from Fairy Tail (both first showed their powers around 2010 in the anime) can transform into electricity and water respectively.

Bunnyx's Burrow – Professor Paradox from Ben 10: Alien Force (2008) has the ability to travel through time and create portals to other dimensions.

King Monkey's Uproar – Cicada, a villain from The Flash TV series (first appeared in 2018, with powers that differ from his comic book debut in 2001) has a dagger with the power to nullify the powers of other Metahumans.

Multimouse's Multitude – Slapback from the Ben 10 reboot (first appeared in February 2019, eight months before the debut of Multimouse) has the power to duplicate himself, with the clones becoming smaller and more dense in the process.

Hawkmoth's Akumatization – The Sorcerer from Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja (2012) uses his “stank” to transform innocent people into monsters. In addition, he usually uses it on people who are feeling negative emotions (and unlike Hawkmoth, he has Tim Curry voicing him)

Mayura's Amokization – Daiki Kaito/Kamen Rider Diend from Kamen Rider Decade (2009) has the power to summon other Kamen Riders to fight for him.

Hell, I can keep this up with every akumatized villain too, but then this post would take forever to finish.

The point I'm making is that except for Miracolonizer's Liberation (the power to free someone from any restrictions to let them reach their full potential, only it's used by a villain to erase any morals the victim has that keep them in line instead, basically driving them crazy), basically every power seen in Miraculous Ladybug has been used before.

The problem isn't that the powers featured aren't original. What makes a certain superhero or superpower interesting is the way it is used. The Black Canary from Arrow had a sonic device that allowed her to emit her trademark sonic scream instead of it being a natural superpower. Does that mean that Marc Guggenheim invented that power?

Of course it doesn't. So why would Astruc think just because he placed an interesting spin on some preexisting superpowers, that means he “invented more unique superpowers than the entire industry”? That is an incredibly egotistical way to think for a show that's only been on the air for three seasons. And I think it's pretty clear this show isn't exactly Avatar.

But if you really want to watch something with “unique” superpowers, watch Ultimate Muscle. A character in that show has the power to literally transform into a giant shoe. Yeah.

here’s a list of some personal favorite mini/maxi series of mine (with links!)

MINI-SERIES:

dark knights: death metal robin king (1 issue)

background knowledge required: middling. this takes place in the death metal storyline, so it’s nice to know what’s going on. but honestly, robin king’s story operates on its own pretty well as a glimpse into bruce waynes that could have been (and are!). i love robin king i think he’s adorable. tw for gore though.

nubia: real one (graphic novel)

background knowledge required: none. nubia’s backstory and connection to wondy is given and explained. HEAVY tw for police brutality, racism, school shootings, sexual harassment and the like. nubia: real one is written by a black woman and as such handles the topics fairly well, but it can still be upsetting.

year one: batman/scarecrow (2 issues)

background knowledge required: none! dive right in. gives us jon’s backstory and, provided you know who batman is, you get the gist real quick. great read, great art, great time.

timber wolf (5 issues)

background knowledge required: not much! this was my first brin comic. easy and quick. features one of lobo’s bastard sons, thrust! funny antics ensue. good story, good characters, some wacky coloring mistakes.

event leviathan (6 issues)

background knowledge required: some. you should probably know who the characters are, but other than that, it’s pretty easy. not a huge fan of b and jason’s characterizations here, but plas is in it (huge thumbs up) and he’s very weirdly homoerotic with the question.

plastic man 2018 (6 issues)

background knowledge required: none! jump right in! you see eel’s backstory, the villains are self explanatory, it’s a great characterization and a great read. has a canon trans character (two, if you count eel!) and is wonderfully written.

collapser (6 issues)

background knowledge required: absolutely none. this is a free floating comic. fun art, fun characters, fun story.

eternity girl (6 issues)

background knowledge required: like collapser, absolutely none. this series stands alone. heavy tw for suicide and self harm. it’s a heavy story but it’s really amazing. definitely worth a read.

MAXI-SERIES

black canary 2015 (12 issues)

gonna be honest, been too long for me to remember much about this comic, but the art is fuckin gorgeous.

metal men 2019 (12 issues)

background knowledge required: not too much. happens during death metal, so there’s alternate universe shenanigans. overall, just a fun read if you wanna watch a very sad scientist get even sadder.

doom patrol 2016 (12 issues)

background knowledge required: sssssome, but it’s nowhere near necessary. you can get a handle on the characters pretty quick, even if i would recommend reading morrison patrol first. fun read, fun characters, fun ending. followed by doom patrol: weight of the worlds, a 7 issue series of one-shots focusing on alternate universe versions of the doom patrol.

shade the changing girl (12 issues)

background knowledge required: some, but it’s not necessary. basically, she’s the successor to shade the changing man, but you get the gist of her whole deal pretty quickly, and reading his comics isn’t essential. he does appear in this series and his characterization isn’t... great.... but. if you’re just reading for loma, go for it. followed by shade the changing woman (6 issues).

dc/young animal: milk wars (graphic novel)

background knowledge required: read doom patrol 2016, shade the changing girl, aaaaand probably eternity girl first. the rest is pretty self explanatory and honestly if you wanna jump right in and see batman as a priest, i don’t blame you. it’s cool and really fucking weird. but it’s super fun! you should read milk wars!

Hey. Hey, you. Don’t rely on Google to know which shows are Arrowverse. Google doesn’t list all of them. If you want the entirety of the Arrowverse experience, including web-series, mini-series and comics, here you go

The CW’s Arrow, 2012-2020. This is the real kickstarter of the Arrowverse and is completely necessary for proper binging.

Arrow is also a 2012-2013 comic series that ties into the first season. It is unnecessary.

Arrow: Season 2.5, 2014-2015, is also a comic series, filling the gaps between seasons two and three. Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger’s death has since been retconned. It is unnecessary.

Blood Rush is a six-episode web-series that premiered alongside Arrow. Felicity Smoak has a mission for Roy Harper. It is available online for viewing, but it’s unnecessary.

Arrow: The Dark Archer, another comic book series, ran in 2016. This is set between seasons three and four, apparently focusing on Malcolm Merlyn’s backstory. This is said to have continuity errors. It is not necessary.

The CW’s The Flash, 2014-present (2020). This one introduces meta-humans into the fold and is necessary.

The Flash: Season Zero is a 2014-2015 comic series that takes place before the events of the show. 22 chapters have been retconned from canon. It is not necessary.

The Chronicles of Cisco is an official tumblr (2015-2017) and instagram (2017-present) blog. It details the “stories and reflections of the eponymous character set in the Arrowverse,” meaning background details, along with Cisco’s thoughts on daily vigilante life. Some references to Season Zero. It is unnecessary.

Chronicles of Cisco is a four part web-series that aired in 2016. Cisco works on Barry’s suit. It features a total of two characters. It is unnecessary.

Stretched Scene is a 2017 mini-series starring Ralph Dibny. Ralph goes about annoying Team Flash. It aired during the Flash season 4’s commercial breaks. It is unnecessary.

NBC’s Constantine, 2014-2015. This show was retroactively added during Arrow’s fourth season. This is demi-necessary? I got by without it, at least. John Constantine reprises his role as a recurring character for the later seasons of Legends of Tomorrow.

John Con Noir is a 2015 web series with one episode. It is in clay-stop motion form. I think(?) it was made during a petition for Constantine season 2, of which it did not receive. It’s fourth-wall-breaking, non-canon and unnecessary.

The CW’s Supergirl, 2015-present. Until recently, this show existed on another universe where CW’s Barry Allen would visit sometimes. It now exists in the combined universe of Earth-Prime. That being said, it introduces the concept of aliens, and is necessary.

Adventures of Supergirl is a 2016 digital comic book series. “Kara Zor-El landed on Earth after many years stuck in en route from her now-destroyed home planet Krypton, having followed in her famous cousin Superman's footsteps. Upon arriving, she was taken in by the lovely Danvers family and taught to hide her un-Earthly powers from sight. As the world falls in love with her super hero cousin Superman, Kara starts to feel the urge to embrace her powers, especially when her powers can save someone she loves.” Tales from Kara’s childhood and transition, I believe(?). It is unnecessary.

CW Seed’s Vixen, 2015-2016. This is an animated web series (compiled into a movie) that stars the granddaughter of Amaya Jiwe, a main character on Legends of Tomorrow, discovering her abilities and becoming a vigilante in Detroit. This has since been retconned as the result of a change in the timeline. Vixen/Mari is featured on one episode of Arrow, marking the character’s first and only live-action appearance. It is unnecessary (but a fun watch!).

The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, 2016-present. It takes characters from the above shows and continues their arcs, including Ray Palmer, the Darhks, Eobard Thawne, Malcolm Merlyn, Sara Lance, Mick Rory, Kendra Saunders, Carter Hall, Jefferson Jackson, Martin Stein, and Leonard Snart. It is necessary.

Mr. Parker’s Cul De Sac is a 2020 mini series focusing on Mr. Parker’s daily life. It’s unnecessary.

CW Seed’s Freedom Fighters: The Ray, 2017-2018. This is an animated web-series with the same number of episodes as Vixen. It is unnecessary, but is a good watch if you’re curious about Earth-X.

The CW’s Black Lightning, 2018-present. This was a separate series until the development of Earth-Prime. It introduces drugs that can imitate metahuman abilities. As it’s now a part of the main Arrowverse lineup, it is probably(?) necessary.

Crisis on Infinite Earths Giant is a 2019-2020 comic book series that ties into the Infinite Earths crisis. It is unnecessary.

The CW’s Batwoman, 2019-present. The character was first introduced in the Elseworlds crisis. Since then, she’s developed into her own title character. Kate Kane is to be replaced with a different main character in season 2. As this show is a part of the main Arrowverse lineup, it is probably(?) necessary.

The CW’s Superman & Lois, a confirmed upcoming series that will premiere in 2021(?). It will most likely tie with Supergirl sometimes. That being said, I don’t know if it’ll be necessary.

The CW’s Green Arrow and The Canaries, an upcoming series that is said to be in development. It is a spin-off of Arrow, and will likely star Mia Queen, Dinah Drake and Black Siren’s Laurel Lance.

The CW’s Painkiller, an upcoming series that is said to be in development. With Jordan Calloway reprising his role as Khalil Payne, this will act as a spin-off of Black Lightning.

The CW’s Wonder Girl, an upcoming series that is said to be in development. It will feature the DC comics character of the same name.

Shows featured in the Infinite Earths crisis currently reside in alternate universes/dimensions and are thus not canon on Earth-Prime, but exist in the Arrowverse. Interactions are not likely. Here is the list in the case they do crossover again.

CBS’ The Flash, 1990-1991. This alternate Barry Allen makes a total of four appearances on CW’s The Flash, two on Arrow, and one on Supergirl.

The Flash TV Special is a 1991 comic book special with only two chapters consisting of these characters. It is not necessary.

The Flash is also a 1991 video game based on this show. It is not necessary.

The WB’s Birds of Prey, 2002-2003. There is one appearance made by these characters during the Infinite Earths crisis. It is unclear if their version of Harley Quinn is the same one belonging to the Arrowverse, as she is yet to make an official physical Earth-Prime appearance beyond a faceless line, so it is up for debate. It is probably unlikely given that the Birds of Prey do not currently inhabit Earth-Prime(?).

The CW’s Stargirl, 2020-present, Earth-2. This show reboots the “Justice Society of America” featured in Legends. That being said, it is not currently interconnected.

The Batman TV series universe, Earth-66.

The Batman Anthology universe, Earth-89.

The Superman Anthology universe, Earth-96.

The Smallville universe, Earth-167.

The Lucifer universe, Earth-666.

We now come to the last ramble of 2023, and to keep me from feeling more stress than I need to around the occasion I often call Stress-Mas, I’m sticking with my comfort zone of superhero film universes that could have been. In this case, it’s back to imagining the DCEU that could have been if Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins had launched DC’s live-action film continuity instead of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. So, let’s get right into it by quickly re-capping phases 1-3.

So, phase 1 is basically there to establish the DC universe in a film format and get the Justice League together. Phase 2 builds on that foundation, but it also takes a big whack at it by having Batman’s caution over his colleagues going rogue cause issues within the league. With Green Arrow 2, the caution proves apt and brings about a lot of change, which is followed up in phase 3. Now with the third Justice League film focusing on a prelude to an attack by Darkseid, one may assume phase 4 will take a similar tack to phase 3 of the real-life MCU and play into similar plot threads to Infinity War and Endgame. However, when we look into phase 4, things aren’t totally what you’d expect.

Looking at this, the more knowledgeable DC fans out there can probably see what I mean when I talk about phase 4 maybe not going where you’d think. We’re channelling some major shake-up story arcs from the 1990’s in this phase, so expect the unexpected is definitely a must. However, for those who may be less knowledgeable and for those who want to get into the blow-by-blow details, let’s check these hypothetical DCEU phase 4 films.

To date, the Death of Superman story arc of the 1990’s has had three adaptations in film. The first was an animated home-release film called Superman: Doomsday, which heavily shortened the death arc and went a long way off the original source material story regarding Superman’s absence and eventual return. Next came Zack Snyder’s Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, which essentially shoe-horned a version of the story into its ending, then mangled the resurrection arc between Snyder and Joss Whedon in the 2017 Justice League film. Third were the DCAMU film adaptations from 2018 and 2019, with the first being a fairly accurate adaptation of the Death arc, while the second film was similarly good quality on part 2.

For this alternate DCEU, I’d want to borrow the title of the first attempt, ignore anything Snyder-based and try for a longer and slightly different variation on what the DCAMU gave us. As a result, we still get a good quality adaptation without being a carbon copy. The plot is roughly the same, in that Superman would have to go up against an alien monster called Doomsday, and has to lay down his life to end the threat. However, changes include the Justice League line-up aiding him, Lex Luthor isn’t trying to pass himself off as his illegitimate Australian son (don’t know what the comics were thinking on that one), and of course it’s the more modern Supergirl on hand instead of the 90’s version.

The cast is mostly retained from prior films, though a few are new in this film, specifically Doomsday, the Henshaws, Bibbowski, Mongul and JL members Fire, Ice and Booster Gold. In addition, there’s a change of direction; up to now, each Superman film has had different directors, going from Roland Emmerich to Ron Howard to Guillermo del Toro, with Rob Marshall directing the Batman/Superman film in phase 2. This time, it’s JJ Abrams taking up the reigns, having previously been my selection for the two Flash solo films of this alternate DCEU.

For this film, we’re following up on events from the previous Justice League film as well as our Death of Superman adaptation. With Superman down, the heroes Mister Miracle and Big Barda return to their home-world of New Genesis in an attempt to bring their kin to Earth’s defence against an almost-certain assault by Darkseid. However, their leader Highfather is unwilling to violate a non-aggression pact between their world and Darkseid’s planet Apokolips. However, Darkseid is less scrupulous and facing potential usurpation by Virman Vundabar, so it’s actually New Genesis that comes under attack.

This film is very much about getting a better look at Darkseid and his supporting cast, while at the same time getting to explore the New Gods and paying cinematic homage to one of the more notable Jack Kirby creations from his DC Comics work. Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Darkseid, DeSaad, Steppenwolf and Kalibak are brought back from the last Justice League film, while everyone else is introduced for the first time. The castings of Danielle Fishel and Jennifer Stone attest to the attention I’ve paid at times to Disney Channel sit-coms (in this case, Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World and Wizards of Waverley Place, respectively), while most others are from a smattering of various mainstream films and shows.

As we’re dealing with alien worlds, I picked Aliens director Ridley Scott to helm this one. This is a first-time pick for this alternate DCEU.

The Judas Contract is a 1980’s story arc for the young heroes that’s seen a couple of adaptations, first in the team’s animated series of the early 2000’s and then as a film within the DCAMU. It’s a good tragic story, as well as a coming-of-age story about being careful who you trust. This film version would try to adapt it a bit closer to the comics, including the incorporation of Deathstroke’s mute son Jericho, his estranged wife Adeline and his best friend Wintergreen. The film would also showcase Dick Grayson’s shift from Robin to Nightwing, and since Terra is of Eastern/Mid-European descent like her brother in the Outsiders, the casting takes this into account.

While the main Titans and Deathstroke return from past films, Terra and the other characters are new. Emma Bading is a German actress with a decent filmography who would be of comparable age to the other Titans, hence her selection. Direction-wise, I’m looking to Matthew Vaughan, having previously picked him in this alternate DCEU for the solo Green Lantern films, based primarily on the work he did on X-Men: First Class.

Having used Guillermo del Toro of Blade 2 fame to helm a third solo Superman film and the second Suicide Squad film of this alternate DC film universe, I’ve brought him back for a film that leads directly into the Knightfall/Knightsend duology. In this case, Amanda Waller has heard rumours of a new player in Gotham City planning to make some kind of move on Arkham Asylum. To that end, she recruits two Suicide Squads; one made up mostly of lesser Gotham villains who are to find out who the new player is and stop them, the other as back-up in case the first team fails or turns traitor. As to why team 1 lacks the usual explosive fail-safes, this is so Waller can avoid being found out, as Batman is wise to such things. However, as the film progresses, it’s more Batgirl and Detectives Allen and Foley of the GCPD who periodically disrupt the operation.

As the plot develops, the threat of Bane is ultimately revealed, at great cost to the Squad. In fact, this is where the first real shock probably comes in, because this film will see Harley Quinn killed by Bane. This is done largely to show that no one is safe from Bane and increase the stakes for the upcoming Batman films, but it also sets up for a Joker-related film plot in the next phase of this alternate DCEU. I won’t go into unpicking all the new versus old casting on this one; if you look through my Ramble articles past on this alternate DCEU, you’ll be able to see for yourselves.

Knightfall is an epic-length film that covers much of the comic story arc of the same name from Batman comics on the 1990’s. In the original arc, Bane breaks out all the villains of Arkham Asylum, forcing an already weary Batman to exhaust himself chasing down the escapees prior to a showdown with Bane. In that showdown, Bane broke Batman’s back, forcing Bruce Wayne to hand the cape-and-cowl over to apprentice superhero Jean-Paul Valley, who was trying to overcome brainwashing he’d undergone to be an assassin of sorts called Azrael. After an opening act to introduce Azrael a few months prior, the film then jumps in at the moment the preceding Suicide Squad film ends; with Bane firing a rocket at Arkham to bust the villains out.

With a montage here and there to expedite matters, Batman wears himself down as before, only to be broken by Bane as in the comics, and as before, Jean-Paul is handed the mantle of the Batman. However, it soon becomes clear this may have been a mistake, and when Jean-Paul confronts Bane, it’s uncertain whether the new Batman will triumph over his mental trauma or not. The film contains a huge ensemble cast and covers a wide range of Batman characters both good and evil. To direct, I’ve picked Matt Reeves, who did the Planet of the Apes reboots and in this alternate DCEU has already helmed the third solo Batman film.

As 90’s DC fans might guess, this film is all about adapting Oliver Queen’s death from 90’s comics into film, though I swap Superman out for Green Lantern on three counts. First, slating this film for in-between Superman’s death and return prohibits his involvement. Two, Hal and Ollie have long had a major bromance to add greater importance to the climax. Three, it makes the built-up to our solo GL film a bit better, as we will see. Aside from Hal Jordan, only Oliver Queen, Dinah and Roy are returning rolls, while the rest of the characters are all new and largely exclusive to this film and its storyline.

What is the story line, beyond killing the original Green Arrow? Well, like the comics, Ollie goes undercover with a group of eco-terrorists to uncover their plans, but he starts to fall for a member of the group, and at the same time, Ollie’s illegitimate son shows up looking to connect with his dad. For film direction, I’ve gone with Rian Johnson, a new selection for our alternate DCEU based on his work with the Star Wars film The Last Jedi.

Obviously, this film covers the return of Superman arc in much the same way as the comics do in the broadest sense; four Supermen turn up, Lois tries to work out who the real one is, one turns out to be a villain in league with the alien tyrant Mongul, whose role is expanded in this film. Their plans destroy Hal Jordan’s home town of Coast City, but Metropolis is saved by the returning real Superman. The film borrows a bit from its DCAMU counterpart by simplifying the Eradicator’s history, and indeed over this film and the previous Superman one we’ve done the same with Hank Henshaw. This is because the characters had prior history with Superman in the comics, but our film continuity wouldn’t cover that, so a bit of a tweak is in order.

Now because both the Eradicator and Henshaw were meant to resemble Superman outwardly to some extent, the casting of them is now a matter of putting Brandon Routh into those roles as well as playing his original Superman role in the third act. We also get another step on Hal Jordan’s descent into darkness, something that hasn’t had a proper adaptation in any media. The closest we’ve come is the last Green Lantern solo film in DC’s Tomorrow-verse continuity, which frankly isn’t that good, but more on this under the next film. JJ Abrams remains the director here to keep things consistent within this duology.

As you might imagine, this film would be filmed in close proximity to the two before it to facilitate the various cross-over aspects of it. This time, we’re doing the Emerald Twilight/New Dawn story arc, in which Hal Jordan suffers a mental breakdown after his home town is destroyed during the events of Superman’s return. In a fit of anger, he rampages across the stars to Oa, home planet of the Green Lantern Corps, defeating fellow lanterns and swiping their power rings. After a final showdown with his friend Kilowog and enemy Sinestro, Hal takes all the power of the central Lantern battery, becoming a villain known as Parallax who plans to remake the universe to prevent the destruction of Coast City. However, a last member of the Guardians travels to Earth and bestows a last Lantern ring on freelance artist Kyle Rayner, and thus a new Green Lantern is found, but one who must master the ring with no GL corps or Guardians to guide him.

Again, not going to unpick who is new and who is long-standing for this film as it would be a bit long-winded to explain. However, as we don’t really include Golden Age superheroes like original GL Alan Scott, exposition regarding Hal’s actions to Kyle ends up coming from Superman’s appearances in the film, as well as human GLs Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Due to the way Hal acts in this story arc, not to mention this film adapting the infamous murder of Kyle Rayner’s girlfriend, I picked Sam Raimi to direct this film based on his horror film background. Raimi was also my pick to direct a John Constantine one-off film in phase 2 of this alternate DCEU.

When Bruce’s doctor Shondra Kinsolving is abducted, the crippled Bruce Wayne begins a search that leads to the healing of his back at great cost, while Jean-Paul Valley grows increasingly unstable. Now heavily armoured and armed, this Batman is more brutal, and when a man dies from Jean-Paul’s behaviour, the recovered Bruce Wayne must begin a crash-course in the fighting arts in order to confront his errant replacement and reclaim the mantle of the bat. Again keeping Matt Reeves in the directorial position for duology consistency, this film focuses on the follow-up to Knightfall as the defeated Bane is moved aside and the battle comes out as original Batman versus would-be replacement.

Our latest Justice League film brings a few different plot threads in from past films. Following the events of Justice League: Darkseid Rising, the death and return of Superman and the New Gods film, Darkseid finally dares to try and assault Earth. Forewarned by survivors sent from New Genesis, the Justice League gathers what heroes it can, and also reaches out to the Suicide Squad. The Doom Patrol also appears, but at the climax of the film, as Darkseid takes to the field of battle, there are two major shocks; the death of the Flash, and the arrival of Parallax, who decides to wipe out the forces of Apokalips. Suddenly it's not an alien tyrant who threatens the armageddon of the film’s title, but one of their very own turned to darkness by grief and fear.

The film has a huge ensemble cast, largely reprising roles from past films. Debby Ryan as Suicide Squad member Nightshade is the sole piece of new casting in this film, and as for direction, I decided that the work done by the Russo Brothers in the MCU, especially Infinity War and Endgame, earns them the chance to direct this film and one or two subsequent instalments in this film universe.

For this film, we retain Matthew Vaughan from our last Teen Titans film for directing and explain the absence of the Teen Titans from Justice League: Apocalypse a little. Following an arc over all three Teen Titans films, Raven is struggling to contain her father’s presence, but after a major fight with the villainous Doctor Light, Trigon manages to possess Raven and attacks the Titans through her. With the main team decimated, a group of new, younger teen heroes rise to aid their predecessors. By the end, what Titans remain would not be in much shape to fight, win or lose. Much of the cast is retained from past films, with the characters of Doctor Light, Wonder Girl II, Miss Martian and Blue Beetle being the newcomers for this instalment.

Closing out phase 4 of my alternate DCEU is a take on the Justice Society that borrows from a Justice League animated series story line and Marvel’s Wandavision series. In this film, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Shazam wake up in a world where they’re part of the Justice Society, a superhero team operating in a 1950’s-style American mid-west town. Though they initially suspect nothing wrong, Hawkman’s past life memories and Shazam’s wisdom of Soloman begin to disrupt a strange mental hold, and as they do, the infamous Injustice Guild becomes much deadlier. In reality, Parallax is doing a test-run of his proposed plans to the time stream, but as the test is disrupted from within, the New God Metron convinces anti-hero Black Adam to interfere from without.

For direction, I went with James Gunn out of curiosity to see what he could do with this, given that in real life he’s become the DC film-verse’s equivalent to Marvel’s Kevin Feige. In terms of casting, the individual characters mentioned in the paragraph above are all returning actors, while everyone else is new and exclusive to this film. As for why I think this would be a good approach on the Justice Society, that’s down to a desire to pay homage to the early comics in a way that’s nostalgic while also advancing the Parallax story arc.

So, that’s it for phase 4 of this alternate DCEU. More to come on this and my alternate MCU in the new year, but not right away as I’m hoping to get more variation on the go in the new year. 1. (4.09) "Legends of Yesterday" - In the second half of a two-part crossover that began in "THE FLASH", Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow and Barry Allen aka the Flash and their fellow vigilantes struggle to find a way to save Carter Hall aka Hawkman and Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl from and defeat the murderous immortal Vandal Savage.

2. (4.15) "Taken" - Oliver seeks help from old friend Mari McCabe aka Vixen for help in fighting Damien Darhk, the leader of a terrorist group called H.I.V.E. Meanwhile, half-sister Thea Queen aka Speedy has a heart-to-heart talk with her biological father, Malcolm Merlyn.

3. (4.03) "Restoration" - The growing tension between Oliver and his friend/colleague John Diggle aka Spartan endangers their lives when they pursue Darhk and a H.I.V.E. deployed meta-human. Meanwhile, Laurel Lance aka Black Canary talks Thea into returning to Nanda Parbat in order to resurrect her younger sister Sara in the Lazarus Pit.

4. (4.05) "Haunted" - Oliver calls in a favor from old friend and sorcerer John Constantine when the resurrected Sara takes a turn for the worse.

5. (4.02) "The Candidate" - Oliver and Thea are concerned when a family friend plans to run for mayor of Starling City. Thea starts to exhibit side effects from her resurrection thanks to the Lazarus Pit, last season. And Team Arrow's A.I. expert Felicity Smoak asks an employee for help with a business decision.
