This, my friends, is a variation of "Cass finds catatonic Jason during No Man's Land" that already exists, but we're taking it further.
Cass tentatively trusts Batman but she doesn't trust Batman with Jason. She doesn't tell - or, well, let it slip in any way - that she adopted a homeless boy who can't talk while she herself was homeless and couldn't talk. Because the boy is fighting like he is trained by Batman. And boy is he young.
He's the same age as Cass, actually, but it doesn't feel that way. When she looks at him she kinda sees herself, maybe a few years after she ran away from Cain... It was a rough patch, that's all I am saying.
She trusts Batman, or, she wants to trust him. But being willing to work with Batman isn't the same as being willing to put the boy in his vicinity. Because what if she's wrong?
So the boy is her secret. She visits, feeds, protects him when she can. And then Bruce finds out about Cain and the murder thing and flips his shit and they fight - yeah, okay, she doesn't know exactly what went down between Batman and the boy but she is certain that she is right.
Bonus: she does not feel suicidal. Or maybe she still does but she doesn't actually follow through. She has the boy to take care of, so sorry Shiva she has no time for your bullshit.
Then, she finds out Batman is Bruce Wayne. She starts digging into his past hoping to find out more about the boy and voilà! Jason Todd.
Her little brother. Adopted by Willis Todd and Sheila Haywood - Willis was doing it as a favour for Sandra Wusan, as Shiva knew Cain had no use for a spare and wanted to save his life while not wanting to care for him. Then, Sheila and Willis break up, Sheila fucks up and has to run away from Gotham, Willis marries Catherine and she adopts Jason. Then, both die and Bruce adopts Jason. Then, Jason dies.
Then, Bruce kinda, sorta, adopts Cass.
And okay - the way Bruce has been treating her is deserved, she deserves it, she killed a man, Bruce just helps her to be a hero like him.
But what did Jason do? She heard what Bruce tells people about Jason. Sounds like Bruce feels that whatever happened to Jason, is deserved too. And, the most important, how will Bruce treat Jason when he finds out he is alive? Just like Cass? Worse than Cass? Does Cass think Jason deserves it?
No.
Maybe, how Bruce treats her is not deserved either.
It all comes to a head when Robin is fired and when the gang war plays out and Robin - Steph - nobody seen her in days, and Cass is worried because Steph is not safe, and Jason, who is living in a hideout, also not safe. And Cass is literally torn between them.
Then, Jason accidentally gets into a fight while Cass is out looking for Steph, and somebody recognises him - just like in canon. Difference is, they take him straight to Black Mask, who already got Steph.
Torturing Steph didn't get Black Mask the result he wanted. He is willing to try out torturing someone else while she's looking, someone like a former Robin.
Steph does gets free like in canon and fights with Black Mask like in canon, and has a chance to kill him and doesn't, like in canon. Difference is, as Black Mask tries to counterattack - the cavalry, Cassandra, shows up.
Whoever was the thug who recognised and took Jason, they left a trail for Cass to follow right to where Steph was being held. Cass kicks ass and helps Steph to rescue herself. She also introduces her little brother to her best friend.
And, while all three are being patched up by Leslie and swap stories - about how Bruce's treatment of them wasn't the fairest - they figure out a plan. They need a break from Gotham. Leslie promises not to tell Bruce anything, and even helps them get to Africa. Stephanie heals and trains under Cassandra's watchful eye, they also travel around the world and meet a lot of interesting people - like Artemis from Bana-Migdall, for one. Supergirl, who they already know, also joins them. Also, Green Arrow (Connor), Green Lantern (Kyle), Ravager and Deathstroke (Grant and Rose Wilson, Grant is alive because I said so, Rose hijacked Slade's identity also simply because I feel like her becoming a hero as Deathstroke and ruining his decades worth of ruthless mercenary reputation is something I honestly want to see). Who else? I dunno, you tell me.
Oh, and Stephanie becomes Flamebird (like Dick, she was inspired by her Kryptonian friend when she was workshopping for a new superhero name after graduating from Robin). Cassandra becomes Batman. Just Batman. No explanation. She us arguably a better Batman than Batman, so it's the opposite of what Rose did.

Diana Prince is one of Bruce Wayne’s closest friends and allies outside Batfamily.
Dick Grayson and Donna Troy are such close friends at least one adaptation gave them a brother and sister-like relationship.
Cassie Sandsmark is among Tim Drake’s closest friends
Wang baixi and Peng Deilain, Bat-man and Wonder-Woman of China, are an outright couple..
Even resident rebel Jason Todd has gotten along with Artemis of Bana-Migdal
So I propose Cassandra Cain and Yara Flor form next in the line of such good relationships.

Omg. I am FLOORED.
Both Rose Wilson and Artemis of Bana Migdall are from the DC Comics fandom. Wonderful, morally grey, badass ladies. They have not kissed in canon YET. But they should. Artemis is canonical queer. Rose...is coded as bi and I would argue she is canonical if you look at certain panels but she hasn't like...come out yet. Y'know?

Artemis sometimes stays awake at night wondering what might have been if she had been born on Themiscyria and lived a more traditional amazon life, closer to Diana. Artemis was programmed in her Bana-Mighdall upbringing to hate Diana but then she witnessed the sheer power, virtue and grace with which Diana carried herself, everything changed. Artemis still hopes to get the chance to ask Diana out on a date when she feels like she has redeemed herself adequately.
