Is there any power scaling discussion that will inevitably make you feel the need to respond, no matter how irrelevant power scaling is to the actual media in question?

First of all, Nero won because he wanted to win more than Vergil did. Second of all, Vergil's used to fighting an agile clown like Dante and not a brute gorilla like Nero who has no problem with just grabbing him and slamming him into the dirt repeatedly until he cries uncle.

BUT ALSO we know that human blood fuels demons in Devil May Cry. They have to consume it to grow their powers, which is why these guys keep powering all their infernal machinery with blood and why the tree whose fruit is kingmaker of the underworld must feed on human blood.

Before Nero, it looks like Vergil and Dante's strength came from being the sons of Sparda, who was Mundus' strongest soldier and was able to solo all of hell for his lady love.

But honestly I think a lot of their power comes from their nature as hybrids. When Urizen consumes the same fruit that made Mundus king of the underworld, he gets torn a brand new asshole by Dante working with an 8 year old's logic (if Vergil cut himself in two with the Yamato, maybe stabbing myself with Rebellion glues both my sides tighter?) and it actually works.

Not only is Dante's SIN Devil Trigger form written down in Nico's notes as matching (or even surpassing) Sparda's peak, he crushes Urizen both before and after the latter consumes the fruit containing human blood worth millions, completely mystifying the demon king because what the fuck kind of bullshit powerup is that?

Urizen's only able to match Dante's strength once V fuses his human self back into him to recreate Vergil.

I think being a demon-human hybrid basically acts like an infinite human blood battery. It's already inside you and never runs out because your body just makes more blood. The demonic side isn't granting the power, it's granting the abilities; the human side is the gas fueling this killing machine.

The whole time Sparda was turning on his own hell legions for Earth pussy he was unknowingly stumbling into the blueprint for creating unbeatable demonic super soldiers, and had no idea.

Every time Dante defeated the likes of Mundus or Argosax they must have been calling horseshit because there's no way they're getting destroyed by this buffoon just because he's Sparda's son when fighting skills aren't something you inherit like it's hair color, not realizing Dante's powers are fueled by his own blood (and plenty of self-stabbing).

This means that Nero is not inherently weaker than Vergil or Dante by having less demon in him, because it's the hybrid nature itself being their strength.

While Nero's powers aren't as mature as theirs, his demonic strength is enough to grab both Dante and Vergil's SIN devil trigger forms and push them back when they charged at full might, and in fact he's physically strong enough to lift giants like Goliath and ragdoll them around like their name is Bluto and he's just eaten a can of spinach.

Dante even points out at the end that Vergil cut off his own son's arm for more power and the son still kicked his ass anyway. By the end of DMC5 Nero doesn't need the Yamato anymore to do Buster moves, he can shape his own aura into arms to punch and grab things just as effectively, making him completely independent from actually using any devil arms to fight (he only needs human weapons like Lady does). He's strong enough that Dante trusts him with protecting the world by himself while Dante goes to hell, which is a big ask given you know, everything in DMC 1-4.

TL;DR - Nero strong

It’s not an easy story to hear, but I feel as though people need to know her true story instead of Disney’s romanticized one.

Also, if you guys REALLY want a good female POC pirate story, check out the story of the most successful pirate in the world named Ching Shih, aka Cheng I Sao. She was a woman born in Guangdong, China in the late 18th century and worked as a prostitute until she caught the eye of Cheng I, the notorious Commander of the Red Flag Fleet. After buying and marrying her, he noticed her intelligence, leadership skills, and determination, so he began to teach her about life in the high seas. She quickly adapted and helped him lead his fleet, and when he died she assumed full control over his fleet and amassed 1,800 ships and 80,000 pirates under her control and became the most feared pirate leader of her time. It’s a VERY cool story

one of the most infuriating things i’ve realized about fandom spaces lately to me has been some people’s inability to just trust a story and engage with its premise and what it’s trying to express. “canon sucks i can do it better lol!!!” is one of the most annoying attitudes to me and i do kinda hate how prevalent it’s gotten (in actually good polished media that isn’t to be engaged with like that)

like between people who read things in as bad a faith as possible and ceaselessly criticize things they supposedly like, and people who only care about media for the sake of making cookie cutter self-indulgent fandom content, it feels sometimes like the most controversial thing you can do in a fandom is “actually liking the source material for what it is”

Ily guys but maybe watch Bojack Horseman or the Good Place or even like. The Owl House or something. I do enjoy Hazbin but maybe it's not the most profound piece of art in the world guys it's okay. You can love something that's kinda bad. Most shows are kinda bad. Other shows are less bad though Hazbin isn't some groundbreaking piece of art and that's fine

my strawberry film is a poignant mystery show about high school crushes and unrequited love. yes. there were queer characters. but the rabid BL fans and their uncontrollable need to see gay men in everything ruined my entire watching experience. every week there would always be someone new asking "is this really a BL?" how DUMB do you have to be to not immediately recognize that it's NOT a BL after the first 2 eps. it's really just portraying this group of teenagers dealing with their early life crises.

idk. I understand why people get very up in arms about harry potter (even though I do think that the pendulum has swung too far toward "these books are pure evil"), but it does bother me when folks say "don't pirate it it's just as bad." I could vaguely understand that if it were about, like, not blogging about it, because I can see that that might be "providing engagement" (I loosely disagree with this not only because tumblr is largely unmonetizable but because the average tumblr doesn't have many followers and is unlikely to make a dent in the prevailing anti-harry potter mindset), but it seems to me that this is becoming less "don't financially support jkr because she uses those funds to campaign against trans people," which is an extremely valid and important approach, and more "don't consume jkr content because it is capable of corrupting you and turning you into a jkr minion," which I oppose on principle

The way that my friend felt disappointed when he found out as a kid that an androgynous character he idolized was a woman because he quote "couldn't relate to the character anymore" and the way that the creator of Celeste """discovered he was non-binary""" because he wrote a female character that he was able to relate to are branches off of the same vein of misogyny I think

#gender critical #misogyny #it's all about the often-subconscious belief that women are subhuman or at least inherently lesser than men for being different from them #for the first dude: literally every woman on earth who consumes media relates to so fucking many male characters. they are our favorites.#some of them are so beloved by us that we believe we must actually be men because we can relate so hard to them. i went through this myself #(which is kind of what's going on with the second dude but i'll get to that)#yet for some reason a lot of men have a hard time relating to female characters in any way similar at all. there are zero men writing #obsessive (affectionate) thoughtful intelligent analyses of their favorite female charas' arcs and symbolism #(in part because so few media have any well-written and actually-humanized female charas to be able to do that with but also...)#because men see women as possibly-human fuck toys for them and nothing else #so when even self-proclaimed/usually feminist men relate to a female character outside of 'i want to fuck this' it makes them feel weird #bc male sexuality (this includes osa men i'm sorry to say but i've observed so many men like an anthropologist i see the same behavior #in all of them) is so centered around humilation/domination/aggression that it's not compatible with compassion/empathy #so for them to relate to a female (character or person) they get this weird-feeling psychological thing kinda similar to that joke of #'if you punch yourself and it hurts are you weak or strong?' but in this case it's 'if you relate to a sex object should you start thinking #you're also a sex object or should you let go of your momentary empathy for the sex object?'#and dude no. 1 took the latter path while dude no. 2 took the former #well in a way. his thing is more like 'if i am a human (bc i'm a man) and i can relate to a woman... does that mean women are human #or does it mean i am a woman?' and he picked the second route #i know agp vs hsts is (was?) the main grouping system radfems use(d?) to explain the different types of tims #and to some extent those labels do work especially since they're centered around sexuality which plays a huge role in trans identities #but i feel like it's either more accurate to just use the following labels or at least add them into the venn diagram:#some tims are trans because they see women as sex toys and enjoy the thought of being a sex toy themselves therefore they want to be women #while other tims are trans because they've othered the sex-object class of humans so hard that if they ever accidentally relate to a woman #it's a mindblowing discovery and makes them part of The Other (women are still of course treated as The Other for this to work) and #therefore super special (and of course more special than women because they're sex objects + The Other whereas #he is a man aka a human + The Other. this is especially true when men decide they're nb like guy no. 2 as opposed to trans women because #again women = sex toy to men so any men who do not want to be objectified are a different kind of Other to women [which to them consists of #females and trans women] but they still are The Other in some way and therefore must be both a man [human] and something else)#these concepts appeal to both osa and ssa men depending on what level/flavor of misogyny they cling to most and how gnc they are

There are certain things I want to get better at, but they say that to get better, you need to be willing to take in the craft when it's created by other people. For example, if you paint, to take interest in the paintings of others. If you act, watch movies. If you make music, listen to music. But the thing with me is that I am both lazy and extremely picky. Because I'm so picky, searching for media to consume that I'll actually like is such a chore. I'm hurting my chances of improving, I know that. But I'd rather just strive to improve according to my own standards and discover how to do this on my own terms.

wouldn't it be so cool if when the pve for ow2 comes out the story and writing of it all is so horrendously bad that it has a reaction effect within the fandom that kickstarts people making their own versions of the game's story and soon there's fan comics that are 20x better than anything bl*zzard could dream of

I know this is somewhat a joke question, and yes- on the face of it, it would be

But in reality, that would not be the reaction to canon content being bad. Spite can only support you for so long - and more importantly, people are already doing just that; creating. If PvE comes out and is horrendously bad, people will be disappointed, they’ll be angry, they’ll post about how they feared this but had dared to hope, I’ll make a very big and funny and time consuming post writing a fake job application to the blizzard writers or some dumb shit like that. And then some of us will leave and some will stick around and make the same shit posts and drawings and what have you not

It’s all already there, you don’t have to punish yourself waiting around for something you don’t want

So sorry for being overly sincere, but if you want fandom to thrive, you shouldn’t sit around and wait for canon to write itself off for good, you should go out and look for the amazing stuff people are already putting out. Hell, you should make your own! Community and enthusiasm and love will always make better stuff than bitterness
