Are you named after someone?

Technically yes; definitely, in regards to my birth name (my Father's Mother). And kind of in regards to my chosen name (multiple women on my Maternal side).

What sport have you played?

American Soccer. I wanted to play professionally at one point, even. Worst idea ever, ha!

Do you use sarcasm?

Nooo, never.

What is the first thing you notice about people?

Their shoes- but really only because I'm usually looking at the ground while I walk; never been able to break myself of that habit.

What's your eye color?

Blue-ish green-ish; it's like a funky mix.

Scary movies or happy endings?

Either or for me. I love horror and worked in the Indie Horror industry for a while- but I'm also a sucker for a good Christmas RomCom, y'know? Variety's the spice of life! That said, I don't actually watch television or movies that often anymore; nothing's really genuinely caught my interest outside of Star Trek in a while now.

Any talent?

Art. And then I invested a lot of time and effort into further developing that into a skill (They are not the same thing).

What are your hobbies?

Reading. Gardening. Art. Embroidery. Baking and Cooking. Birdwatching. Hiking. Camping. Exercise of various types (Yoga, Ballet, Cycling, etc). Visiting Parks and Gardens (I have a bucket list!); It's been years since I've done some of these, though, because of the Fibro. We're getting back to it, though, hopefully 🤞 Slowly but surely!

Do you have any pets?

Five of them! 4 Cats (Myra, Araris, Freya, and Echo), and then a Dog (Whisper).

How tall are you?

5 feet and 1 inch; I'm so tiny that the first time @justletmebeokay saw a video of me holding my Kindle Oasis, they legitimately freaked out about how small I was compared to the damned thing. Apparently it's not normal to be this tiny and this short?

Dream job?

I'd love to have my own business selling Incenses, Ritual Oils, Perfumes, Spice Blends, and Teas that I've made myself ... I'd also love to own a shop that was, like, 1/4th Metaphysical Store, 1/4th Book Store, 1/4th Bakery, and and 1/4th Tea / Coffee Shop ... And I've also kind of always dreamed of running a public Rose and Peony Garden; the true dream, though, would be figuring out how to marry all of these dreams into a single space of some sort.

No. 3 - G3, Hall of the Fire Giant King (July 1978)

So that was a little disappointing. But maybe it just middles in the middle? C'mon Gary, let's see that special skill I've heard so much about.

G3 begins how G2 ended: teleporting conveniently on the outskirts of the fortress in such a way as to skip a trek without surprising the players. Meh. Our big bad this time is King Snurre -- I haven't mentioned the Chieftains yet because they're all just midbosses compared to the this guy. And, he's kind of famous isn't he?

For a guy who is functionally a one-off NPC that the party presumably kills, he ends up in a lot of paintings. Not that I'm complaining, that 4e art is amazing. In fact, broadly, 4e's art is a little underrated, it benefits from being less restrained than 5e. I don't think that's a knock on 5e's artists, more like…the art direction seems to be intentionally tamer. Anyway, thank you 4e art, I never realized there was a dog in the background of the 5e PHB until now. Neat.

Yada yada yada the setup is exactly the same as before, but now it's got ~mordor vibes~. As far as changes change, these fire giants (even the children) expressly do not do morale checks because apparently Snurre is such a motherfucker. Scary!

Anyway, we're already in the room-by-room, so let's begin the juicy part:

There's a scooby doo trap with a tapestry in the doorway having holes for eyes so a giant guard can alert the entire building if the players don't catch it. That's evil! But not unfair, which is a good balance. Naturally, there is a ballista tripwire on revisit that does some nasty damage, so this hallway is just The Troll Zone

Snurre has two pet hellhounds leashed to his throne, but also he's wearing a white dragonskin as a cloak at all times, which overcomes his natural aversion to cold with MAGIC. What an asshole! Also, as you look at that picture from the 5e cover, there's a bevy of (unimportant) changes from the original, like Snurre is no longer in his signature pitch-black platemail, but I think special mention should go to the fact that in the original he has literally 60k worth of precious stones on his person and scattered throughout the architecture of the throne room. This room should be GLEAMING.

A Gygaxism: Queen Frupy is a 'haradin', which roughly means 'scold', which. Ok. So, so much attention is given to how uggo she is (to Gary). Actually, I think the description of her armor is kinda cool, she wears black dragonskin, studded with iron (so by Runescape logic I guess she's good with a bow?). Reaper Minis did a character that sort-of resembles the description, but their Vanja has a spear where Frupy uses a scepter:

You can actually negotiate with her, the implication of the text is that she's unreasonable but…just ignore that. Lol.

She also has a magic mirror (implied to be a furniture mirror, not a hand mirror) that reveals invisible creatures in the reflection, which is kind of awesome. Good way to catch assassins! Somehow the drow are using a gifted necklace to spy on them, but I feel like the mirror probably should've revealed in some way (maybe the mirror was also a drow gift?) She's more astute than she lets on, because she has a huge stash of mind control crap in her dresser drawers for emergencies.

Keeping with the "giant leader's treasure sucks" tradition, Snurre's treasure is genuinely crazy. It occupies a FULL PAGE, and each INDIVIDUAL TRUNK has a listing and an explicit mention of the traps. Traps range from a standard scything trap to secret snakes to the treasure being invisible to contact poison. How the hell does Snurre use this room? You're telling me he never fucked up remembering which of the 13 chests were trapped in which way? Oh, also, they're pick-proof, because fuck you thief. Naturally, the loot itself is also a fucking trap, because while there is some truly amazing stuff in there (20 randomized magic items, a decent amount of valuables, a +3 ring of protection, and a ring of 3 wishes), there is also lots of troll items (statues with a stacking curse of -1 to all tests, ring of contrariness, ring of delusion). On the whole, a big fuck you to the party. Oh, and while the locks are unpickable, you can shoot them off with magic missile, which is…why?

Snurre's dwarf-slave-advisor is bizarrely well equipped and loyal, and given the opportunity to escape he will…backstab the party. As much as people complain about how early DND has too many save or die traps, I genuinely think the regularity with which rescued npcs betray the party is a waaaaaay dumber and more ridiculous trend. I simply cannot fathom why someone as smart as Obmi would choose to keep being a slave to Snurre when adventurers showed up with the ability to free him. Honestly? Take his big lie and make it true. The lie makes sense because it makes more sense than the canon character.

The scroll that finally tips at the motivation of the giants is, no kidding, scroll #68 of almost 450 paper items, none of which are mentioned. The weird need for a number baffles me.

The kitchen is doing some lateral thinking and using one of the gas vents as a gas stove, which is hilarious.

Oh, we're only now to level 2?

All of the former kings are entombed in a Giant Tomb, which, that is entirely too cool of a visual for them to have not included a visual. In a fucking grave mistake, this room is cut from the 4e remake, so there is no incredible art of it. There is no justice.

If you somehow didn't kill the hill giant chieftain AND you didn't get him in G2, he's here in G3. And he brought the pet bears!

Gary, you're such an asshole. No one would ever think to throw their cool mace into the lava pit mid combat. This is just trolling.

🤷 Guess I'll die

"The were-rats, if losing, will turn into rats and flee down the drain" That is, actually an incredible escape plan, except that we have pre-established that this Hall is founded upon LAVA AND COOKING-HOT GAS.

Fuck the party I guess

You often hear people who got into ADND in the late 1e/2e era talk about how people speculated that Hommlet must lead to Temple of Elemental Evil because of hints about the Elemental Eye and, honestly it just kind of feels like Gary defaults to the Eye. It has come up in every scenario he has written so far (which admittedly is 2 so far), but with the power of Knowing What Comes Next I can assure you that this is going to keep happening. Anyway, there is a temple to the Eye here, complete with human sacrifice, and the allusion to tentacles eating people is already starting to signpost what we now know is true: It's Tharizdun. The Eye is Tharizdun. It always comes back to Cthulhus!

A lot of early players clearly enjoyed Poking Random Shit because if you decide to touch the Elemental Eye's altar and also play every musical instrument in the room, you get to make every person in the room roll on this table, AND also execute whichever player is nearest to the altar (no save). But, hey, you will suddenly get whatever you want most on the altar. If you are somehow dumb enough to do it again, there's a 1 in 12 chance you get a +1 in all stats, a 2 in 12 chance of something extremely bad happening, and a 9 in 12 chance nothing happens.

Would genuinely like to know how many GMs bothered following this instruction. It does teleport you towards the final encounter, so that's something.

An entire page is dedicated to disarming the tentacle wall magic trap, which to be honest looks like it'd repel a significant percentage of players because you either need an evil cleric or some good magic to dispel the wall, and the wall punishes the shit out of you for trying to disarm it. To be a mild devil's advocate, the tentacle wall IS super suspiciously placed (the shape of the room implies it's going somewhere), so at least it's not also super esoteric. If you DO bypass it, you are now the proud winner of the "discover the drow" award! Woah, elves but they're ontologically evil??????????????????????????????????? Truly novel! Eclavdra, head of the drow here, hangs out doing nothing in particular, and you may unceremoniously execute her if you want to bring her storyline to an unceremonious end.

The frost giants are here from last module, if they survived. They really want you to kill these kings!

This adventure just won't end. There's a surprising amount to say about this module given that it's only 22 pages of monster murder and motherfucker traps. Anyway, welcome to level 3!

There are fake dragons here to troll you into getting excited for loot

The fire giants also have a panic room? Every giant has a panic room. Why are panic rooms so normal in the G series?

A SECOND fake dragon that is actually a gorgon, which is almost funny

Finally, a REAL red dragon, which is frankly cruelty to fool me three times

After many, many drow are fought, you eventually run into a magic-fighter drow noble who has a wand of "viscid globs", which despite the suggestive name, is actually a superglue gun? You can literally rip yourself apart trying to separate yourself from a glued object. It's a really, really bizarre item. And it has a LOT of charges -- 79.

Mercifully, finally, something that could be potentially interesting: Eclavdra's rival is hanging out in the basement and can be sweetalked into helping the party screw over Eclavdra, which. FINALLY. However, if you displease her, it's demon time.

For reasons I cannot fathom, there are mind flayers here observing the drow, and the drow are not super bothered by that.

And that's basically it! at the very end they find a tube with a map and a wish leading to the D series, and a quick explainer on the then-new Drow. Well, not that quick, it's a page and a half, but the conceptualization of the drow is basically unchanged between then and now. Evil elves, forced underground, adapted to living there, dark skin, magic spidersilk clothes and adamantine weapons, sunlight sensitivity, drow spell list.

On the whole, G3 is, an adventure. While yes the Drow twist is kind of neat (but not special, since Drow are functionally Melniboneans and Elric was already decades old at this point), mostly this module lacks the fun of G1 and substitutes lots of murder traps for any genuine creativity with the scenario. On the whole, I consider it…crowd pleasingly boring? Your treasure goblins will love it for how much nice stuff they can find, if they survive.

We will end today with the back cover, which features some hippogriff mounts. People just don't give parties flying mounts anymore, it's honestly strange the tradition died. See you in the D series later. And if you're waiting for more obscure modules…I can only promise one in 1978.

What are your Hobbies? I'd say maybe fishing, I used to fish a lot.

Liberal arts or sciences? Or are you more the athletic type? My reflexes being my best asset, I think I'm the athletic type.

What's your best subject? Well...Physical eduction... That's not great, right? I'll have to try harder.

What are your grades like?

Well, since I only started attending school recently, I can't really say. Someone went to a lot of trouble to ensure I'd be able to go, though, so I'm going to hang in there.

What is your dream for the future? For this country to be free of conflict.

Please describe your personality with character in between 2 and 6. Genuine. Miss Milly said so, I guess then ? Can't really disagree with Madam President.

Please tell us what your strong and weak points are. My diligence is vrobably my strenght, but I'm also pretty rough, and I make a lot of little mistakes, I guess those are weaknesses, right?

Favorite foods? I like foods with strong flavors. Food with demiglace sauce, that sort of things.

Your least favorite foods? Miss Cecile's original creations. Don't say it out of there but those are difficult to endure...

After you wake up, what's the first thing you eat? My toothbrush. Morning person or Night person?

I've been in the military for a while now, so I'm basically a morning person. Even Though, if I put my mind to it, I can sleep anywhere at anytime.

Which do you prefer, baths or showers? I take a lot of showers.

When did you first fall in love? (And with whom?) An older girl who worked in my house when I was little. I was only three or something , but I was an early bloomer, you see.

Indoor type? Outdoor type? I'm the outdoor type.

What's in your wallet? I mostly use cash.

Special skill? I'm run vretty fast (To escape?) Not at all ! How do you commute to school? I walk sinceI live directly across the street from my school.

When have you been glad to be a man?

Well I've been glad I don't need to bother about wearing makeup or being fashionable, that sort of thing. But when you're in the military, it doesn't change much.

What do you most want to eat right now? Gorgeous 4 Pizza.It's supposed to be gorgeous, so I want to see what it's like. Describe your ideal family situation. I won't ask for a lot, just to be with a person I love.

How much time does it take you to get ready in the morning? Two minutes when i'm fast and five minutes when i'm slow. Three of those minutes are spent brushing my teeth.

Miss Cecile, she's a gentle mentor you can rely on. Also, princess Euphemia. Well only women…

what a good ask! i have a rather long response to it.

the answer is Yes, quite a lot, actually. so much so i bullied myself for 2 years straight and ended up not drawing anything at all despite wanting to because i deemed my skills not good enough. i regret being so harsh still. and i have some advice!

as my sweet Girlfriend always tells me durning hard times of doubt the truth about art is that you have to make thousands of bad drawings that dont look exactly how you wanted/you don't like to finally get to the point where you will be genuinely happy with yourself, how you execute your ideas and your work in general. thats how you get good. thats what all of us have to do when we pick up this craft, really. and its scary, frustrating and tough but it pays off and you can definitely do it as long as you take it easy on yourself.

what im trying to say is, please keep drawing and dont stop yourself even if you dont think you can do it. big or small, bit by bit. what matters is that you tried and bravely pulled through. you will learn a lot just from the attempt itself. besides, internet is a bottomless pit for art tips and youtube is a friend. if youre not sure how to do something, search it up. there's nothing to lose. (÷

Were you named after anyone?

Nah, but my comes from the Finnish name of a tree. Like, it's the Finnish equivalent of the name Rowan.

Do you have kids?

Yeah no. I do want to have kids one day but I'm still in lukio and have no job. And also I don't have anyone to have a kid with.

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

I use it way too much. It's a force of habit and I'm trying to stop because it often comes off as mean.

What's the first thing you notice about people?

I'm not gonna lie, I don't notice shit.

What's your eye color?

Amber. It's like orange-brown. (It's genuinely my favorite thing about my body.)

Scary movies or happy endings?

I'm kind of a pussy and haven't really watched any horror movies. I do like darker movies though. Like literally one of my favorite movies is Fight Club.

Any special talents?

My autism superpowers 😎 But seriously I just know alot about weird things but I don't know if that counts as a skill. I can read tarots if that's anything. And I'm very good at Mario Kart for DS.

What are your hobbies?

I've been doing circus for 10 years now (I do unicycle). I also just really like video games and movies. Also I do drag and I don't make any money from it yet so that's a hobby.

Have any pets?

Sadly no. I really want a cat though but I still live with my parents because I can't get a job it seems. I'll try to get a cat once I move out. I do catsit for my sister often so her cats are kind of my pets too :)

What sports do you play / have you played?

I used to do figure skating as a kid but I can't do it anymore. I do still like skating though. Other than that, absolutely none. My dumbass body has fibromyalgia so I can't really exercise that much in general.

How tall are you?

I'm 158cm or around 5'2". And I'm totally not insecure about it. Short king 👑

Favorite subject in school?

When I was in yläaste (kind of a mix of middle school and high school) my favorite subjects were visual arts and history. In lukio (mix of high school and college) I really like philosophy and visual arts.

Dream job?

My ideal future would involve no work but my options are pretty much teacher, drag queen or kelapummi (living off welfare).

Update: Finally added the circle BG thing to this one

Also, I decided to change his og name as there was no real reason for him to be Japanese.

Age: 19

Family: Foster father Angus Belmont, honorary aunt Franziska Belmont

Friends: Ichirou Araknos (A spider themed soul eater), Adam Knight (A chesire cat)

Love interest: Henrik, a human fisherman living in the human world

Currently home-schooled as he needs to catch up to his peers, but his power is too volatile - even by mirror world standards - to allow him to go to a normal high school.

Extra info:

Witch Covenant: The council that oversees all magic users, specifically witches, warlocks, wizards, mediums, etc. They mainly oversee those whose primary power comes from their magic, rather than their being (I.E, without their magic they'd be normal humans)

Blood Sage Warlocks: Powerful dark arts mages who specialize in magic able to affect one's body and mind. often includes transformations of some sort, such as in Angus' case he can transform parts of his body into dragonic type of things. (The term "Sage" is mainly used because blood mages are fairly rare and most still existing are old men/women. Angus and Clover's late 'father' are the few members of a younger generation)

Personality:

Clover is a temperamental, kind of a troublemaker teen whose temper leads him to end up in scuffles and fights a lot. Despite this he generally means well, and doesn't mean to cause concern to his loved ones. He has abandonment issues and trauma from his childhood, and doesn't like being left alone when sick for example, and tends to get overtly worried if he does something he perceives could make Angus mad at him. (it doesn't happen a whole lot)

Because of his isolated early childhood, Clover is very keen on going out and learning new things, and while he might call Ichirou and the like "nerds" he tends to actually listen to his ramblings closely, being genuinely interested. His social skills aren't the best, and Clover gets easily flustered when he's not sure what to do or how to act in a situation.

Fun Facts

His biological parents were french, and he still tends to curse in french the most or when he's grumbling about something all pouty.

Clover's style tends to lean towards punk and urban/sporty vibes, and he loves wearing a lot of green and black

His favorite patterns in clothing tend to be spiky vines, clover shapes and chessboard patterns. Or dragons, as dragons remind him of the person who rescued him, Angus.

His mother still sometimes tries to contact him, though indirectly as she's aware she could get killed approaching him directly. Clover doesn't really want her to do this and tries to ignore any messages she sends.

Clover was initially wary of women due to the only woman he was exposed to being his neglectful mother, but overtime he gained more positive experiences, such as through Franziska, later his friend's youthful grandmother Yui, and plenty of others.

he met Henrik by accidentally teleporting himself into the human world, and not knowing how to get back. He stayed with Henrik for a few days, until Angus found him. Angus agreed to let him continue visiting Henrik upon seeing how much the boy liked him, as long as he let them know if he did.

Clover swears like a sailor, though he tries not to do it around Ichirou and his family. If he does slip, he tends to immediately apologize for it.

He speaks four languages total, having learned through his new friends and family; French, english, german, and Japanese. (he's least fluent in the latter, but still understands it well enough)

Clover tends to look up to scary, powerful figures who still show incredible gentleness and kindness. Such as his foster parent Angus, Ichirou's father Jurou, and a wyvern Sebastian Kravchenko he meets through Angus' clinic, being a frequent patient there.

He would never admit it, but he actually really enjoys Quinn's music (Quinn is a bakeneko and a popular singer in their world that Ichirou is a fan of)

His patchy skintone is a result of his unusual and volatile magic combo, the dark patches representing the forest magic, and the pale parts representing the blood magic.

Due to his deformity, he can't eat a whole lot in a day - he will throw up if he tries - which puts him at risk of starving a lot. To combat this, Angus uses a special type of ambrosia to mix in his food that includes more than enough nutrients to make sure he's fed properly even with tiny portions. (This food would be bad for humans as it'd give them an overdose of several minerals and vitamins)

He gets cold easily as well due to his condition, which is also why he loves wearing oversized clothing; keeps him warm.

Despite his food issues and deformation, Clover is still physically fairly strong thanks to his blood magic, and can easily throw around guys twice his size with his vines. People often underestimate his strength due to how he looks.

Babylon 5 s02e07: A Race Through Dark Places

s02 Table of Contents • previous episode

Station budget relies on the civilian traffic, but the military traffic has been higher than usual, so they’re running on a deficit, since the military doesn’t reimburse the station for funds lost by the mandatory re-routing of civilian business. And they want want to charge Sheridan and Ivanova 30 credits a week to stay in their current quarters, which are a whole 7 square feet bigger than the next size down which would remain free. All this sounds exactly some some bs the USA would pull and is completely believable.

My!!! guy!!!! Bester is back! And on a day when I’ve found a totally legal and normal way to screencap for some gifs again. hell to the yeah. Prediction: I’m gonna like this one. He’s got a new, scary sidekick.

Oh I love him, he’s so terrifying and perfect.

Telepath: “He’s dead.” Bester: “It doesn’t matter. I caught it, just before he died. Betrayed by his final thoughts.”

He’s my special little guy. But does this mean Talia is involved with the underground telepaths?? She was really not down with whatsherface not going to PsiCorps.

Sheridan is just down to fight whenever anyone squares up even a little. What is 30 credits? I have nothing to compare it against. Is it like, a nice meal for two? A month’s wages for a dock worker? I feel like this is the first hard number for a price I’ve seen so far.

Going for the easy questions I see, Delenn! Just quickly, explain humanity. Awww she’s so cute. Dinner date with Sinclair! He was dtf (down to fight) 2 seconds ago and now he’s dtf (down to flee) and figure out if this is a date or not.

Sheridan: “One day they’re shooting at you, the next they’re taking you out to dinner. Hah! What a universe.”

He looks bemused and delighted. I’m delighted. This episode will have everything if only Susan and Talia will be allowed to be onscreen at the same time.

OMFG they’re in the same room at the same time!!!

Sheridan: “I’d like to talk to my people for a moment.” Bester and Talia: *leaves the room* Me: “Talia where the fuck are you goin...oh. Telepath. well frag that.”

Garibaldi: “Want, agree, that has nothing to do with it. The law is the law.”

And that’s ACAB baby. When the law is unjust, those that uphold the law are unjust.

Garibaldi: “That’s damn ironic, isn’t it? That the corps got started because we were afraid of telepaths? Now we’re victims of our own fears. And we took away every right they had and shoved them into a big, black box called Psi Corps. Now look at em. Black uniforms, jackboots, giving orders. Some days they scare the hell out of me.“ Sheridan: “Yeah If you ask me, we created our own monster. And maybe we deserve it.“

Good advice by Ivanova. Read the logs about the Jason Ironheart Incident.

Lots of good background info being dropped. Talia wouldn’t notice a surface scan, she keeps walls up to block out the background noise, but Bester wasn’t and heard someone calling him a murderer.

“Bester will try to stop up, so we don’t have any choice. We have to kill him.”

I agree, but also, oh man my special guy. :(

DELENN YOU BABE. Well no wonder Sheridan falls for her. She’s humaning it up like a bossbabe for this date.

It’s genuinely astonishing that Ivanova has nothing whatsoever to do with the underground (that she’ll admit to). I think odds are relatively good that she actually does. Perhaps Dr Franklin is? He’s been a little revolutionary.

Date’s going well. Humor is an excellent bonding point.

Bester reaching out to Talia civilly. We love to see it, only for the drama.

This is the one and only anger fit Garibaldi can throw that I support.

Oh well, not really a closet I guess. Man, she gets manhandled a lot.

oooof, and forced pregnancy. I wonder if the baby got a guide for a year and then it was on its own as soon as it could walk.

yeah, that’s hard to do when you’re ready to deconstruct from cult life, let alone when you’re kidnapped by kindly telepaths who insistently tell you horror stories of PsiCorps as some kind of guided deconstruction.

Invoking Jason Ironheart is absolutely the way to get Talia to help. I’m rooting so hard for them! And for Bester to survive and continue to commit atrocities for my viewing pleasure. I’m a simple person.

DOCTOR STEPHEN FRANKLIN YOU DUPLICITOUS BADASS! This episode is everything. I’m vibrating. Generally I like to feel good about predicting things even partially correctly but I only said maybe Dr Franklin has connections, not that he’s running the whole operation, and I’m gonna own that being only very partial. This is baller.

He’s a conspiracy theories that are real guy like Sheridan is, but only for telepathy! Secret doctor network!! The unofficial clinic!!

Alas, Sheridan, but “I agree but the laws“ is not moral best practice.

Bester! My evil little fellow.

Talia grew a hell of a spine in the last ten minutes.

I don’t see how this could play out any way but that these people are dead, but that would also be totally bonkers considering she just planned something with Dr Franklin and Sheridan.

I am extremely into collectivist telepathy. It’s super tragic that they are discouraged from touching even each other. All of them must be just so touch starved.

Doctor Franklin has just shot up a mile in my estimation of him as a person. He got a lot of points for treating Poor Murdered Child, but I also don’t like thinking about that episode. (0/1 stars, will never watch again)

Ah, so Sheridan also has a way with pedantry. Is this a commentary on how rigid military regulations makes for twisting-the-hell-out-of-the-rules geniuses?

Insert incoherent babble here about gloves-off Talia smiling at be-robed Susan smiling at her! Oh this episode is everything I could have wanted. Definitely a 5/5 star one for me! And certainly my favorite of the season so far!

1. Are you named after anyone?

My grandfather!! Courtney was his middle name. (That spelling was originally the masculine form of the name, though it's pretty rare to see it used as such these days.) My middle name is also a family name :)

2. When was the last time you cried?

Uhh... oh it was a couple nights ago, when talking with my parents about my Nana. I still miss her a lot

3. Do you have kids?

Nope. At this stage of my life I can't say it feels super likely ever to happen, though I'd be lying if I said I don't feel a twinge of Something when I meet babies at work lol.

4. What sports do you play/have you played?

lmao I have never played any. I am extremely unathletic by nature, and also always struggled to get my brain around the rules of pretty much any of them when I was like, a kid in gym class

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Sure, but not a lot? Probably an average amount I figure

6. What is the first thing you notice about people?

Man, I dunno - probably their faces or their clothes, depending on context?

7. What's your eye color?

Brown!

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Big big fan of both! I'm not a big sad endings guy, though. Even when it feels right for the story, it's usually not my jam. (I guess sometimes sad endings can be good for scary movies, but that's like... sort of its own thing? because it's about The Horror.)

9. Any talents?

This is always a hard question for me to answer, bc I feel like most of the things I'm good at are more skills than talents - they're things I've practiced and developed over time, like with my writing and art. Although I guess it'd be fair, if unusual maybe, to say I've got a couple naturally strong interpersonal skills. I'm very good at communication, including figuring out what other people are trying to say, and I'm also pretty good at making people feel comfortable and understood.

10. Where were you born?

In southern Ontario, in the city where both of my parents did most of their growing up :)

11. What are your hobbies?

Writing (fiction prose, mostly) and the many kinds of thinking that go with it (worldbuilding, character development, etc). Arts and crafts (of many kinds; I'm often bouncing from one thing to another. Currently I'm having lots of fun learning to crochet). Taking in stories (reading books and comics, watching movies and TV, playing games, listening to podcasts - I love stories in all their forms). Goofing off with my family, especially my younger siblings.

12. Do you have any pets?

We have three cats - Neverland, Louie, and Smudge :)

13. How tall are you?

Uhh my ID says 165 cm, so that's... 5'5"-ish? I'm genuinely so incapable of remembering that on my own, for some reason.

14. Favorite subject in school?

It was usually English and art, growing up. In university it was always my courses that delved into genre fiction - science fiction, children's lit, the fairy tale... also that graphic novel seminar I took

15. Dream job?

Iiii. [sweats] I wanna be a novelist, but also, that's hard in its own way, and I think it's gonna take me a while yet to really Get There in terms of my own skills, disregarding the challenges of publishing. Beyond that... is something I've been struggling a lot with lately, because it's hard for me to imagine myself in a job where I'm both content and competent, let alone able to support myself. I've been wondering a lot again about library sciences, lately, but I just don't know. It's tough out here!

The Izzy paradox

I’m so fascinated by how Izzy was the one pushing Ed back into being Blackbeard. On the surface it seems like a logical outcome, but when you dig deeper, you start to realize that the end of S1 is not something anyone would want, not even Izzy himself.

So Izzy is very much a lawful evil kind of guy. He seems to value reputation, skills and structure above all else. He admires Ed for being a great sailor instead of a great pirate, and the most annoyance Ed can cause to him is when Ed stops paying attention to the actual captaining that keeps them alive and afloat and starts doing his own weird impulsive cat things.

The funny thing is, for how much Izzy hates Stede’s way of pirating, Izzy is also a pretty unorthodox pirate, if you think about it. Izzy’s version of piracy isn’t what most people would normally picture.

Izzy’s mad about Stede ambushing them and tricking them out of a hostage, but when you think about it, isn’t that what pirates and robbers are supposed to do? Why would they politely buy the hostages from the natives, when Stede’s tactic seems more intuitive? Why would you cut your enemy’s shirt open and give them a warning, when you could just stab them and leave them to die? Why would you agree to leave the ship just because you broke the handle of your sword, when you absolutely won the fight in every other regard?

Because Izzy isn’t some lowlife savage criminal, he’s a connoisseur of the respectable art of High Crime.

Ed mentioned how their raids aren’t a challenge for him anymore because people just run in fear. And honestly? This sounds like such an Izzy thing.

You approach someone, they wee their pants and abandon the ship, there’s no senseless loss on your side or time wasted fighting, you simply board and loot it and maybe take a couple remaining hostages and move on like a badass. Nice, clean, fucking professional… but way too efficient for Ed. He enjoys the thrill and unpredictability of a nice fight, and this just feels like routine. Tragic: you streamlined your job so well, your boss doesn’t like it anymore.

As far as I know, the real Izzy Hands was probably responsible for spreading a lot of the Blackbeard mythos we know today, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the fictional Izzy worked his ass off building up Ed’s scary reputation, as well.

So this is how Izzy operates. And when you keep that in mind, you start to realize that Izzy shouldn’t want Ed to end up like he did in ep 10. His ideal Blackbeard would’ve been closer to Izzy’s own ideals: intimidating, disciplined, smart pirate with brilliant strategies and an obedient crew, focused on extending his terrifying but just reach. Like some sort of... menacing gentleman pirate.

But what Izzy provokes at the end of S1 is pretty much the opposite. This Ed is even more volatile and chaotic than ever, probably even less inclined to listen to anyone’s advice, or be rational and fair in his judgement. If he wants to start throwing crew members overboard or cut their toes off for a laugh because he feels like it, he will. If he wants to send them all to their doom because he’s feeling emo and has nothing to lose, he will. So who’s to say that Izzy will be safe?

Izzy didn’t want to die for either Ed or Stede. But I think he might come close to that in the next season. And for a survivor like Izzy, that’s probably the only thing that’d make him realize the line he’s crossed.

Back when Ed said that he needed him, Izzy gave one of the few genuine smiles in the show, and that smirk was timid, and almost immediately hidden, as if Izzy was embarrassed to show how happy that made him.

When Izzy announces the return of Blackbeard, his smile is different. He’s still in pain from his toe loss, and probably still a little shaken by it. All of his other toes are intact, so this is something Ed has never done before. It must be pretty scary to see Ed at his worst, but Izzy’s trying to convince himself that this is what they need to make things go back to the status quo, where Ed still needs him, and where others don’t see them as a joke. So he’s grinning through that pain and fear like a maniac, in a false triumph he made up for himself.

1. Are you named after anyone?

No. My first name was originally going to be my middle name but then my mother heard a nickname for it in the grocery store and hated it so thought of my first name instead. Which is great because I hate my middle name. Also both of my brothers have family names and I'm just like.... picked out of thin air.

2. When was the last time you cried?

My boyfriend makes me cry a lot by being the sweetest and I am not a crier.

3. Do you have kids?

No; the baby factory is closed.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not as much as I used to. I try to be as genuine as possible nowadays.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

I love looking at people's hair! Colors, textures, styles... I just find them all beautiful and interesting.

6. What’s your eye color?

I have a yellow ring around my pupil, a blue ring around the outside, and they mix together in the middle to make green.

7. Scary movies or happy endings?

Scary movies. Sometime happy endings make me mad if they're not earned.

8. Any special talents?

I'm a decent viola player, even though I am years out of practice. My super power is being able to learn new things quickly if I can watch someone else do it first.

9. What are your hobbies?

Writing, reading, learning languages, playing video games, baking, knitting, coloring, gardening, home improvement, swimming, buying clothes online.

Minnesota!

11. Have any pets?

I have two beautiful black cats who are twins (littermates). Their birthday is almost here and they will be 7 years old. They are the best boys and the best brothers.

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

My older brother and father have always been really into sports and I wanted to be like them, so growing up I tried softball, tennis, and golf. I both sucked at and hated all of them. I feel like there were others as well that I can't think of. I did take swimming lessons as a kid, but once it got to learning actually strokes I peaced out, but now swimming is the only "sport" I actually enjoy.

I also took martial arts lessons for about ten years as an adult. It taught me a lot even outside of the physical skills.

13. How tall are you?

5'9"

14. Favorite subject in school?

I always loved English/Language Arts classes. As I got older, arts courses. My senior year of high school I took classes at the college for free and came back to my high school just for Orchestra and Theatre and it was the best.

15. Dream job?

Being retired. Seriously. I just want to not have to work and be able to travel and give time to my hobbies and interests and also do volunteer work.

1. Are you named after anyone? (irl): no, i don't think so! my parents couldn't decide between two variations of this name and they decided to meet in the middle and pick a third option. (internet): izy is my nickname i grew up with! of course, lots of people spell it izzy but i've always been adamant about keeping the one 'z' only. tashio is a reference to inuyasha; inuyasha's dad is 'inu no taisho' which is basically the dog king(/lord) and even as an eleven year old i knew. i KNEW. this was the man i WANTED. since i was eleven or whatever, i've been going by izy tashio online :)

2. What was the last time you cried? february 3rd 2023! since then i haven't cried :D

3. Do you have kids? not yet! but i can't wait. i want a family, and i've even picked out all the names i want and aaaahhhhh.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? yes, definitely!

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? that's a great question, i genuinely don't know. it's a person-by-person case, i don't think i always notice something first. maybe their height...?

Are you named after anyone? No. But a family member other than my parents got to name me. Unsure if I wanna change it when I'm able to really transition either, because it's actually a gender neutral name, and I do love that family member a lot.

When was the last time you cried? Oh, probably last night? I'm really sensitive and I can literally cry at anything, tbh.

Do you have kids? Nope! And I don't really want any? Or at least if I did, I'd want to adopt later in my life when I'm more stable. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I genuinely don't actually know. I'm sure I've made jokes that fall under that before, I just don't keep track of it like that? And I can sometimes have trouble telling what's sarcasm in text, which is how I normally talk to others. What's the first thing you notice about people? physically- probably eyes? the way a face looks? (like if you're tired looking or energetic?) idk, otherwise. What's your eye colour? Hazel. LAYER 001 : THE OUTSIDE.

NAME : john andre

EYE COLOR : dark blue

HAIR STYLE / COLOR : brown, tied back in a queue, with a stupid little braid dangling on one side

HEIGHT : 6'1

CLOTHING STYLE : when he’s not in uniform, he’s probably wearing his Slutty Robe TM or some similar stupid looking white ruffled thing (or nothing at all...)

BEST PHYSICAL FEATURE : hmmm uhhh well i really like the shape of his nose and mouth lol, they’re very satisfying to me for some reason... but also. Buff Arms

LAYER 002 : THE INSIDE.

FEARS : failure, humiliation/embarrassment, loss, death, blood/gore

GUILTY PLEASURE : hoeing around? LOL just kidding... drawing things only for himself that he doesn’t show to other people (he has a separate sketchbook for that)

BIGGEST PET PEEVE : people that have zero disregard for logic/caution and just barge forward with hasty and risky plans. also, people who are rude just because they can, such as to servants

AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE : marry peggy... that’s literally it. hopefully without dying. also winning the war and getting some kind of social status boost from it would be a plus, but if he can manage not to die and get to marry peggy, then he’d probably be willing to lose tbh lol

LAYER 003 : THOUGHTS.

FIRST THOUGHTS WAKING UP : andre is one of those annoying people who wakes up energized and cheerful most of the time and is like ‘cant wait to see what the day brings! :3′. unless it’s s3 and he’s in his depressed era... then he wakes up from a terrible night’s sleep and thinks ‘UGGHHHHHH’ and then about how much of an awful person and a failure he is

WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT MOST : peggy. also, peggy. and did i mention peggy? art that pertains to peggy. books that remind him of peggy. every once in a blue moon he has a thought about spying... but then he goes back to thinking about peggy. he’s in love and it’s so stupid of him

WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT BEFORE BED : elaborate future plans that involve mentally mapping out the entire rest of his life point by point, or making up random stories in his head that have nothing to do with the war till he falls asleep bc honestly this man is so sick of fighting in a war LOL. also horny thoughts about peggy

WHAT THEY THINK THEIR BEST QUALITY IS : his people skills, and how much he genuinely cares about other people

LAYER 004 : WHAT’S BETTER ?

SINGLE OR GROUP DATES : single date, because it’s more ~romantic~ and he would get stage fright trying to play a sappy flute solo in front of a group LOL

TO BE LOVED OR RESPECTED : oh, definitely loved. being universally loved is literally all he wants... and plus, there’s an inherent kind of respect that goes along with love, and he’d much rather have that than the kind of respect that accompanies fear and resentment.

BEAUTY OR BRAINS : everyone thinks that andre is just into hot people, and i mean, he DOES have standards when it comes to appearance, but what will actually get him to fall for someone is what’s inside their head. yeah, peggy is hot, but she’s also his intellectual equal, and that’s both what drew him to her in more than just a superficial way, and what makes his love for her permanent

DOGS OR CATS : andre seems like a cat person lol, but he’s probably kind of clueless around all animals

LAYER 005 : DO THEY…

LIE : for his job, yeah, but it’s not something he’s super proud of. he does a lot of things he’s not super proud of for his job, unfortunately

BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES : somehow simultaneously way too much and not at all

BELIEVE IN LOVE : he isn’t sure until he meets peggy tbh

WANT SOMEONE : he goes from desperately wanting everyone to love him to desperately wanting one specific person to love him, and that’s kind of a scary feeling

LAYER 006 : HAVE THEY EVER…

BEEN ON STAGE : HAHA yes and he’s somehow played, like, every shakespeare character ever

DONE DRUGS : no

CHANGED WHO THEY WERE TO FIT IN : unfortunately andre does this reflexively as soon as he walks into a room of people, he really struggles to actually be himself because of all the pressure he puts on himself to be liked by everyone

LAYER 007 : FAVORITES.

FAVORITE COLOR : hmm probably something annoying like ‘the exact shade of blue that peggy’s eyes are’

FAVORITE ANIMAL : ooh idk... he doesn’t seem like a huge animal person but maybe cats?

FAVORITE BOOK : everything ever written by shakespeare... sigh he’s so annoying (affectionate)

FAVORITE GAME : the “game” of life (UGH lol)

LAYER 008 : AGE.

DAY THEIR NEXT BIRTHDAY WILL BE : may 2nd
