Digital Marketing in 2024

How's the current online landscape?

Been on hiatus because I took up part-time work as a social media planner and marketing consultant for a local brand. Anyway, what seems to be the landscape on digital now so far? As of writing (January 19, 2024), here are some I've noticed and researched too which hopefully may help you in your digital efforts.

Google Lays Off 100 Employees Freshly announced, what a way to start the year, right? I hope those employees can find new work soon.

It is said that the reason was "to trim costs and bureaucracy as it embraces artificial intelligence." The New York Times article also states that "YouTube has struggled to fully recover from an advertising slowdown in the past year and has contended with strong competition from TikTok, the short-video service popular with younger users."

Although YouTube came up with Shorts to match TikTok (even Facebook and Instagram with Reels), the younger generation has cemented themselves in TikTok. Of course, the developer itself continued and continues to optimize itself to avoid being a "one-hit wonder" among mobile apps (like the sad case of Bondee.)

But as an online marketer, how does this kind of news affect you? If you rely heavily on YouTube for marketing, it's best to explore TikTok since this kind of effect already shows that there is great potential in marketing on that platform. If future bugs occur on YouTube, at least you have already explored and planted yourself in TikTok. But of course, you need to analyze and strategize first if your industry fits such a platform. Otherwise, your efforts will just be a waste.

Google Helpful Content Update A major search engine algorithm rollout that started Sept 14, 2023 (took 14 days to roll out so ended Sept 28), the HCU is described by Google as "generates a signal used by our automated ranking systems to better ensure people see original, helpful content created for people in search results." Google also ensures that "If you're producing helpful content, then you don't need to do anything; in fact, this system may be good for your site, as it is designed to reward helpful content."

It is what it is so like this blog, Digital Marketing Course PH, which doesn't primarily aim for SEO rankings but rather, to provide helpful content, I won't be affected by such a rollout. My domain may seem SEO-keyword-driven (I even got a request to not renew payment so some other SEO/agency could take it I presume lol) and it partially is but it's just something direct, straight to the point as to what this whole blog/site is about. It's also a cheap price compared to other provided selection so I chose it. LOL!

For SEOs/website owners, I would suggest focusing on quality and in-depth content moving forward thanks to this rollout, rather than producing quantity (daily or weekly). I know agencies tend to use quantity as their service/package, but maybe it's time to rethink your SEO service packages to clients. SEO is an investment and you are the experts rather than the client so best to explain this to them. SEO is like planting, it would need time and nourishment for it to grow and bear fruit. SEO is different from SEM (instant results but paid) after all.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) The topic is expansive but since this blog niche is digital marketing, let's best focus on that. Google earlier announced that it laid off workers to embrace AI and the recent CES 2024 showcased a lot of AI-embracing tech. For Google's CES 2024 announcements, the "Google apps and services come to more cars" part is eye-opening for a marketer like me. How?

It means that the improvement and continued use of Google Maps should be an opportunity for businesses to improve their presence and information on Google Maps. (Personally, I'm a heavy Google Maps user myself when I plan trips and drive.) You should be on it and should be showcasing relevant information and prioritizing customer reviews on the app.

Facebook Marketplace

Personally using this buy and sell feature by Meta, the Facebook Marketplace has seen a significant increase in users but also scammers so be wary. If you think your product/service is appropriate in this kind of sub-platform, act fast. Avoid being lazy / scammer-like though, invest time in putting complete information and images in this free-to-use Facebook sub-platform. I’ve been thinking about goals for the new year the past couple weeks since I was too restless to pin any down before 2023 ended. I’ve been adding to this list for a little while, and I think I’m finally done with it.

Eat better. Pulling this one from last year since I still have room for improvement. We ate a nice variety of new foods last year, so here’s hoping this year is equally as tasty.

Cook more. Okay this was also a goal last year too and I didn’t make much progress but I DID make scrambled eggs a few times so at least I did something. I’ve been hoarding recipes for a while now so hopefully I get around to doing something with them.

Drink more water. Self-explanatory. I drank more last year than I have previously thanks to a new water bottle, but I need to do better. I’m constantly dehydrated RIP ;;

Get better at doing my dailies. I’m so bad about washing my face and brushing my teeth and procrastinating on housework. Starting tasks that aren’t urgent and doing chores without external pressure are extremely hard for me, but I’m working on ways to push through that wall.

Exercise. Some of my lack of exercise is due to anxiety about not having enough space in the apartment to work out, not feeling safe enough to take a walk in my current neighborhood, or fear of being seen looking silly. I’ve kind of got a good grip on where I want to start now, I just have to get over the anxiety and just do it. I have days set aside for exercise and stretching now, I just have to wake up early enough to have time and willpower to do it.

Journaling. I started in December 2022 around when we were shopping for a new car, then fell off in September after burning out because I had made it a chore for myself by tracking too many things via the tagging function. I was originally intending to journal in my planner this year, but I really prefer having a dedicated journal app where I can also see stats like the weather, location, step count, etc. logged with my entry. This time around I have a dedicated tracker in my planner for certain activities so I can hopefully minimize the amount of tracked activities in my tags.

Read more. It’ll probably just be manga and fanfiction because I’m so out of the loop when it comes to actual books, but I’d like to at least read something. Been a couple years since I did any dedicated reading.

Plan ahead. One of my goals for 2023 was to plan better, and with the help of digital planning tools, I’d say I’ve improved a lot in the last year. Ideally I’d like to plan even more in advance by, say, getting birthday and holiday cards made and sent out in a timely manner. And having themed art done in time for events or special days! Stuff like that.

Save money. I’m tired of being in debt, man. I gotta start spending smarter and doing better with what I have. I’m really good at pretending I have expendable money when I actually don’t. Like I know buying fewer snacks at work won’t make up for the fact that I’m not paid enough, but idk what else to do really.

Be a person! I’m determined to get into the habit of regularly interacting with other people on social media and calling my family more often and hanging out with people and appreciating the people I love more. I want to be present in the lives of others more, and have them be present in mine.

Uhhh I think that’s it! I wish I had made sense of my priorities earlier than almost halfway through January, but it is what it is. I hope everyone else is having a good 2024 so far!

Happy New Year!

Holy shxt! I can't believe I actually made it out of another year of b*llshits... Seriously though, it was a very nonchalant year for me. I mean it was exciting in a few parts but most of the time I was just surviving. And to be real with you it's not bad. Just vibing and trying to get through was a good thing to achieve for a year. One of the biggest factors why I made it through last year was because of my planning ability. I mean, it was the only gasoline that was keeping me alive. Then BOOM, I upgraded my set-up. That's when things started drastically changing. GoodNotes, I love you. I wanted to share my planner set up but I guess that will be added to my blog-idea-pile.

There were a lot of ups and downs last year but just like what I said. It was a fine year. Just to fill my New-year-new-me vibe. I wanted to post my year-end reflection for 2023. I've been gearing up for this post since December last year but it's so hard for me to fill up because I wasn't in the mood for reflecting. But I immediately finished it this very moment because I've been hopeful and in a good vibe since the start of the year. I know it will fade as the days pass by, but I have a good feeling for this year.

I wanna do a top 10 list for music because that's what I always do here aparently(I just won't shut up about music). But I'll only try to make it until this month. So if you don't see my post for that this month. I probably decided not to make it at all. There are so many things I wanna post lol. But let's be hopeful, it's 2024.

Back to the topic, I digitally ripped this image off from my planner last year. I think I will do this next year as well. The girls are right, the placebo is working. Gratitude pages help. It really made me feel good about myself. I feel grateful, motivated, and dare I say hopeful? That's new for someone who is suicidal. So trust me when I say it works. If you're feeling stuck again. Try journaling. I know it's a pain sometimes. But it really does its job. Just start filling in things you feel like writing. Skip those you don't like. My greatest tip for journaling or doing gratitude pages is to just do what you feel at the moment. If this is what you can only do, then so be it. It would make you feel so much better. Please don't feel pressure on mundane things like this. Omg, we're stirring off on another topic. But since we're in the area I just want to share it with you. (Or I wanted to remind my future me of what I felt during this time because no one is reading this anyway!)
