#'gen alpha can't read' can you??????????

I hate that the "Gen Alpha can't read." conversation so much because people are taking this as a chance to call children stupid and their parents monsters instead of having a very real discussion about how the education system is flawed by design, covid fucked up everything socialization wise, these parents having little access to child care and more work hours leads them to lean on things like tablets and phones to watch their kids more and more, teachers are more overworked and underpaid than ever leading to them leaving the profession in droves and that's only like the surface level issues. There's a myriad of factors at play here, not just that "The kids are spoiled screen-addicted brats with no imagination and their parents are childish spoiled millennials who just let coco melon handle everything."

As someone who's been wondering why there've been so many senseless, needless arguments online about a hypothetical derth of purity in fiction and how it affects people negatively (it doesn't), now learning from several friends who are teachers (with the oldest being a uni professor) that Gen Z (27-11 yo) and Gen Alpha can't read, have poor media literacy, and soley seek fiction to reaffirm their own worldviews without curiosity and with judgement (and a lot of it). I say this as someone who is Gen Z. I'm only 26 years old, but I'm also a TA right now while I'm in grad school. it's not just the middle school and high school students. College students who should be able to do simple literary analysis cannot. Sure these issues (puritanical thinking, absent/poor parenting, lackluster curriculum, etc) have always existed, but with this in mind, it absolutely makes sense why there's so much dumb discourse over things in media that anyone with sense could separate from reality. Even simple things that you learn in elementary school at 6 years old, like "just because the story is focalized through a specific character, doesn't mean they're correct/the protagonist≠morally righteous/you're not always supposed to agree with the POV character or main characters." Maybe it really is the case that, sure some people are being deliberately obtuse, but there are also others who probably don't know.
I've seen it explained to people in fandom and on tumblr with popular series people have read or seen. No, you're not supposed to think Light Yagami is a good guy or a hero. "L is the straightforward hero in Death Note the whole time" isn't clever. It's the main text. No, you're not supposed to agree with Eren Jaeger or military fascists. "SNK is pro military and pro genocide" is just inaccurate. All the characters exhibiting those traits are killed to signal the flaws in their rhetoric. It's actually really unambiguous in that regard, not at all subtle. No, x shoujo/YA fantasy/Ya romance isn't advocating for middle school or high school girls to date men in their mid-20s. Teen girls have always fantasized about adults they find attractive, and these stories (made for and marketed to teen girls) fulfills that desire while protecting them from the possibility of that reality (an adult returning their feelings). No, it's not weird that mythological gods (but I see people mostly complaining about Greek and Egyptian ones) are related. It's purposeful. They're all related concepts and personifications of nature, which is all connected. Get over yourselves. No, it's not weird that gothic stories have incest in them. It was a common practice among aristocracy and nobility all around them world (so, not just a "white people thing"), and it typically symbolizes the decay as social norms. If you feel discomfort, then the story was successful.
On the one hand, sure. It's purity culture, ignorance, misogyny, etc. On the other hand, do the people who harp on about these actually know how to interpret stories? I'm often told "They can't read" as an explanation by others. I'm starting to think it's true, and I don't know how to combat that as someone who may be an educator down the road myself while also being involved in fandom.
--
I'd say it's about 50/50 the usual The Kids These Days scaremongering and a genuine shift.
Reading comprehension can be taught. I was taught to analyze passages in school. Students have to be open to learning, but it's not like some critical language thing you need to absorb before the age of two: a college student who's actually interested in getting better can perfectly well do so, possibly with some help or possibly just with experience.
Plenty of it is anxiety about being wrong and immoral and hurting people too. It's fundie thinking where listening and engaging means capitulating. Lots of people do slowly get over this. Many will calm down about it if they ever get the anxiety meds they so desperately need. Some would probably benefit from ceasing to self harm via social media doomscrolling or exclusively consuming attention span-destroying, FOMO-inducing garbage.
...I say as I answer tumblr asks instead of getting out of bed to start my New Year's resolutions.

Extremely Hot Marauders Takes
(that will probably get me so much hate but it's worth it)
You would have found the "next big fic" in the fandom already if you were more willing to read wips. Reading them hyping up the writer with comments and kudos keeps the work going. That gives the writer more incentive to complete the work and more incentive for the work to then blow up.
A lot of people (not all, not even most, but enough that it's extremely evident) who write Jegulily very clearly only do it because they want to write something Jegulus but they're afraid to get hate from Jily shippers.
If you can get over the things that Peter, Regulus, Barty, and Evan did in canon enough to include/head canon them in canon divergent or alternate universe works and make them the good guys you should get off your high horse and do the same with Snape.
Outside of it being a very easy plot device a lot of the marauders fandom write Snape negatively because you can't handle the idea of Lily being presented in/with a non-crack heterosexual relationship with anyone but James
The demographic age change in the fandom skewing significantly younger than ever before has ruined a lot of aspects of the works in the fandom especially with the rising puritan culture of the Gen Alpha/Gen Z cuspers. You guys are prudes and if you don't want to read explicit works and smut move on, there is literally no need to interact.
People will sit on here and cry that the girls are underdeveloped and neglected in fanworks, and then play Ring-Around-the-Rosie with their relationships rather than bothering to develop them into something consistent and impactful. At this point there are so many half baked ideas that you could literally just swap out the names for any of the girls in any work and most people probably wouldn't notice.
WRITE A FUCKING OUTLINE!!!! It doesn't even have to be deep or well done, but you should have a vague concept as to the direction that your story is going in.
Most of you don't know how to use AO3 properly. Why the fuck are you marking a work as completed when it is so so very clearly not. Why in the world would you not include important tags just for shock value. And for the love of God, write a summary. I don't care if it's a one paragraph excerpt of your work followed by a "this is the one where this happens". I'm not gonna read your story if I don't know what it's about.

Ribbons & Ties (AO3 Link) Chapter 4
M/M, GEN (Ch 3 Here) 2000ish words
Terzo x Omega, Terzo & Family, Terzo & His Ghouls, Cardinal Marian is in there for like ten minutes
Tags: Domestic Fluff, Commitment, Rom Com Energy, There's a Wedding, Secondo is Papa Emeritus, Gift Giving, The ghoul names are all messed up sorry it is for plot purposes, I can't have Fluff without some Angst sorry
For reasons beyond Terzo's understanding, he wants to give Omega a present for the ghoul's "birthday". It proves to be a lot more complicated than Terzo realizes.

Chapter 4 Below the Cut! (We like Reblogs, Comments and Kudos omnomnom)
Refusing the gift was an innocent decision. But tonight it felt personal.

Tumblr media
The Satanic Church of the Void was populated mostly by humans, and therefore their wedding receptions followed the typical ebb and flow of drama and joy. There would be at least one person crying in the bathroom over someone else. Later on, maybe someone would trip over an errant step, or pull something from dancing too intensely. The bride’s bewildered family was already slipping table decorations into their handbags.
But the moon was perfectly at first quarter and the paper lanterns above gave a cozy glow over the entire courtyard. It was going to look fantastic in the pictures that nobody would go back to see.
Nihil had entrapped Copia in an excitable one-sided conversation about either plant emotions or the lost experimental recordings of Syd Barrett’s cousin’s next door neighbor that were perhaps too far out for modern society. Copia, well practiced in how to nod politely, discreetly read a book under the table.
Secondo and a few other magicians had created an impromptu Conclave meeting, a brooding theological discussion over cigars that was way too intense for the occasion.
Smiley baby Paul was in his glory, biting every unsuspecting family member he could before falling asleep in his mother’s arms.
Terzo watched most of this play out from the stage, occasionally striking up the band for a few numbers. He felt protected on his perch, although normally he would find a way to collect as many eager Siblings as possible for a raucous private “party” nearby. And some siblings all night had been attempting to get such a party started through a variety of tactics: staring at him through their wineglass, or lingering close to the stage suddenly deeply interested in the dance floor parquet or the lighting situation. He chose to ignore them, a rare action that surprised him.
There were a lot of things that surprised him about himself that evening. For one, the image of the couple standing united would not leave his mind. A crowd of people cheered them, celebrated them. Terzo felt a hungriness that he had no idea what could sate.
And the gift. His gift thoughtlessly chosen, and then politely declined. Refusing the gift was an innocent decision. But tonight it felt personal.
Marian appeared with a platter of hors d'oeuvres for the musicians. Alpha quickly grabbed it from her, pulling it up onto the stage and away. He paused, slightly offering some to Terzo. YOU FIRST, IF YOU WANT.
Terzo had his feet on the ground, leaning against the side of the stage, arms crossed. He had been feeling a combination of wistful and guilty this entire time, which ended up becoming a general sense of seasickness. He waved it all away. Alpha shrugged and dropped the platter on a stool, the rest of the ghouls drawing close. They snatched at the little appetizers, swallowing them under their masks toothpick and all.
Marian raised an amused eyebrow at them, then considered Terzo. “Wow, they can really tuck it away. Literally.”
Terzo shrugged. “They eat mostly for fun.”
“That so?” Marian frowned just thinking about it, then switched gears. “Did he like the gift?”
Terzo stared hard at the ground. “Didn't open it. Refused to open it.”
“Oh. Damn.” Marian blinked her eyes. She had been blinking them slowly this entire time and Terzo realized it was a desperate attempt to keep her makeup from running. She added, “Are you doing a speech later? At dinner?”
“Secondo didn't ask. He asked Copia, actually.”
“Damn,” Marian repeated. “That's…wow.”
A sudden tide of bitterness swept over him, and as usual he felt the compulsion to drag someone down in it with him. If he was going to feel this exposed, then there was going to be some collateral damage. “You and Copia have a lot in common, you know.”
Marian snorted. “Don't even…”
“You're both weirdly over-invested in Secondo,” said Terzo. “My brother’s had over half this room and nobody else is dabbing at their makeup about it.”
“Over-invested? Do I look—” Marian blinked furiously at him, her lips attempting to twist into a neutral expression. “Besides, I bet Copia’s mouth tastes like boot. Pass.”
Terzo cackled, a little too loud.
“Well I'm off to get drunk, if you want to join,” Marian announced as she straightened the cape of her vestments.
“With you? No thanks.”
Marian froze, her gaze sliding into his. She adjusted her biretta. “Get bent, your Eminence,” she said, then left.
***
STILL CAN'T WAIT FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST? Omega’s eyes crinkled into a smile behind the mask. IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT. TRUST ME.
Dinner had been over for nearly an hour and the party was winding down in preparation for the wind up of after dinner drinks and debauchery. Terzo and Omega had slowly made their way to a far corner of the stone arcade surrounding the courtyard. They sat on the low wall there with their backs to the festivities, shielded by the stage itself. They took the opportunity to hold hands despite Terzo's glum restlessness.
“It frustrates me you can read my mind but I can't read yours,” muttered Terzo. His eyes searched the floor. His blood was still boiling over about the gift for some indeterminate reason. He crossed his legs, uncrossed them, then resorted to resting his head on the ghoul’s chest. That action seemed to calm him down.
Omega wrapped his arm around him, softly petting. THIS WEDDING IS DIFFICULT FOR YOU.
“Perhaps that's it.”
EVERY PATH IS DIFFERENT. SO FAR YOUR PATH HAS BEEN WONDERFUL. They were in a secluded enough spot that Omega lifted his mask slightly and brought his face down to kiss the top of Terzo’s head. BECAUSE IT LED YOU TO ME.
“Stop,” Terzo muttered.
WHY STOP?
“You're just…” Terzo felt a stabbing guilty pain in his heart as he looked up at the ghoul. “You're too good for me.”
NOT THIS AGAIN. The thought almost sounded like a grumble, the frustration amplified through Terzo’s anxious mind.
“The gift I picked for you doesn't compare. Doesn't measure up in any way.”
YOU HAVE EXTRA TIME NOW TO THINK ON IT.
Terzo let out a bitter laugh. “I won't. I'll wait until the last fucking minute and then just find something useless to solve the problem. Like always.”
Omega cleared his throat and Terzo met his eyes. They were their usual clear blue-grey, but in that moment they had an uncustomary hardness to them. Terzo waited for the reprimand.
STAND UP. Omega watched as Terzo obeyed. The ghoul guided the smaller man in between his legs and pulled him forward, nearly against his chest. Their eyes met. YOU TRUST ME, YES?
“I do,” Terzo murmured. “But I'm always a little afraid when you ask me that.”
I NEED TO KNOW FOR CERTAIN, THAT'S ALL. Omega brought one of Terzo’s hands in his own. He began slowly, almost teasingly slipping the glove off, finger by finger. He finished one hand, then brought it to the front of his mask, pressing it to the metal as if planting a kiss. NOW THE OTHER. He repeated the process with the left hand.
Terzo felt the leather slide across his skin, and his mouth parted as his breath hitched. His vision blurred, his face collapsing in a near ecstatic grimace. Blood rushed across his neck, down his legs as he let out a small unconscious groan. The ghoul removed the other glove and it felt like Terzo was now more bare before him than if he truly was naked. “What are you--” Terzo could barely catch his voice, and the low purr of Omega's breath behind his mask smothered his senses.
The ghoul gripped Terzo’s hands now, and brought them to the back of his own blackened neck, encouraging Terzo to slide them up under his mask. Terzo’s fingertips studied the firm muscles that quickly faded into the incorporeal essence bound by the metal mask. A black hole. The rim of his physical vessel.
Terzo knew ghouls had no head or skull to speak of, and Omega himself had bared all to him on several occasions. Under the mask it felt as if Terzo had dropped his fingers into a warm bath, except there was no feeling of wetness, just a strange static across his hands. In his mind’s eye he saw the bones of his hands, stark white against an infinite blackness, as articulated and intricate as paper cutouts. He heard Omega exhale deeply, watched his chest fall, and he felt the weight of his lover’s breath envelop his entire body like a blanket of calm.
WORDS ARE STRONGER THAN THINGS. AND IF WORDS WON'T COME, SHARE WHAT YOU FEEL.
Terzo’s eyes flicked from side to side. They were in the far corner of the arcade, concealed by the stage. He had thrilled himself before with erotic games, near misses and fumbling just outside the public eye. This felt even more intimate to him with just his hands under Omega’s mask. The ghoul breathed out again, and again Terzo sank into his miasma of affection.
He thought about the hands clasped and bound. He thought about cutting the ties, rising to their feet as one. For an instant afterward he thought about a moment in his childhood blurred by the decades that had passed. Crawling through darkness, his shoes tied around his neck so his feet and hands could feel their way. He remembered the thrill, of what he did not know. It was perhaps lost to him. There was the feel of papered wood, cold stones across his back—cold stones all around him, holding him secure, safe. He opened the wooden box and opened his heart.
There was an overarching fear, a hesitation. Omega gave Terzo’s waist a supportive squeeze. Terzo felt a bolt of nerves, a shiver shoot up his arms, and he pulled his hands away, gripping Omega’s shoulders. “Too much,” Terzo whispered.
MORE THAN ENOUGH. Omega leaned his large head forward to rest across Terzo's chest.
“What was I even seeing?”
SOMETHING WITHIN YOU ALREADY. SOMETHING YOU NEEDED TO SEE.
“A prophecy?”
NO, A MEMORY. Omega stroked Terzo’s back with a huge hand.
NOW TERZO THERE IS SOMETHING THAT I WANT TO ASK OF YOU. ONE REQUEST.
“Anything,” Terzo said, wrapping his arm around the ghoul’s head and peppering the sculpted metal hair with kisses. “Anything and I'll get it for you, amore.”
Omega pulled away from him and wiggled his fingers excitedly. THE MINI BEEF WELLINGTONS. THERE HAVE GOT TO BE MORE ROAMING AROUND. I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE FOR SECONDS.
Terzo finally laughed out loud, planting another kiss between the ghoul’s eyes. “I'll move Hell and Earth for you, my ghoul!”
HAVE FUN. I WANT YOU TO HAVE FUN. Omega stood up to full height and gently replaced Terzo’s gloves on his hands.
“The cake will be out soon. They've been making it for days. Six tiers.” Terzo’s face cracked into a wicked grin. “I'm going to bring you the entire top, my love.”
I’D LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY.
“I was quite the little thief in my day,” said Terzo. “Perhaps he's still in there.” Again the shred of memory returned, the feeling of his bare feet and hands on cold, pitted stone, scurrying through the dark, his younger heart hammering with excitement in a much smaller chest. Somewhere.
The ghoul’s moment of bonding must have knocked something loose inside him, something that had been buried for decades.
I'M SURE HE IS, TERZO. Omega rested a heavy hand on Terzo’s head. AND I'D LOVE TO MEET HIM.

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
EVERY WEEK I WILL POST A VARIOUS REVIEWS I’VE WRITTEN SO FAR IN 2024. YOU CAN CHECK OUT MY GOODREADS FOR MORE UP-TO-DATE REVIEWS HERE.
___
8. That Time I Got Drunk & Saved A Demon by Kimberly Lemming--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First five-star read of 2024 🙏🏽
My friends have read this book and LOVED it, so I don't know why I'm lowkey surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I thought it would be a cheesy and slightly boring read (I didn't read the synopsis, okay? Sue me.) But what I got was SO far from that. Full of adventure, heart, sexual tension, and hilarious sass, I found myself laughing and paying rapt attention.
I loved the MC and her responses and commentary. I can see myself re-reading this just to highlight all of her sass. She's one of those contemporary characters set in a fantastical world that helps keep these kinds of stories light and fun. There's a scene where the demon just stares at her like "Okay, so we are definitely getting married" and I don't even blame him. This woman is a BADASS.
I loved their exploration of their world and how quick it was. Some readers might want more setting development, but honestly? I'm happy with how light and straightforward it was. I also really liked the side characters and how the demon just takes out anyone he wants, especially if they threaten the MC.
This was fun and everything I wish that other cozy fantasy book had given me. The new editions of the other two books have already been preordered 😌.
___
9. The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
THE THING ABOUT JELLYFISH perfectly encompasses the tortures of middle school, the changing of the people we once called friends, and the effects of grief and how a child's mind may twist in ways that might help them comprehend the reality of death.
Ali Benjamin does a fantastic job of drawing out the history of her MC and her friend. The way they both changed and how the MC came to choosing to stay silent verbally for the majority of the book. Watching her trying to find reasons for why her friend has died was heartbreaking. I can't imagine being a parent in that situation, where you know you can't help your child comprehend the change in their reality.
Also, middle school is a cruel place for a lot of kids (hi, I was one of its victims) and the levels of evil some of these kids get up to is truly astounding. It broke me a little watching this friendship fall apart and this poor, young MC having to remember the last moment she saw her friend alive.
Sometimes things just happen and this whole book is, ultimately, a great source for children grieving. Life can be messy, confusing, and sometimes heartbreaking. Benjamin's novel is beautiful and this is another one of those middle grade books that I think adults AND kids should be reading.
___
10. The Skull by Jon Klassen--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If no one has read any other Jon Klassen books, then they're in for a surprise. If they have, then they'll recognize the eeriness of his writing.
You can't tell me that the hat books aren't creepy (there's a couple of pages where the big fish CLEARLY eats the little fish in the long grass). This guy is morbid and props to kids' authors who can write a book both for kids and adults.
The artwork was beautiful as always and the story was a very, very quick read. Perfect for those 5-7 year olds who want to try something themselves but don't mind a talking skeleton or skull.
This also got reeeeeeal dark at one point and I was just thinking of how some of the Gen Alpha kids are.
Highly recommend--especially for those littles who love a little spooky with their bedtime stories.
___
11. The Fiancée Farce by Alexandria Bellefleur--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Romantic, at times funny, spicy, and full of characters I wanted to punch in the dick, THE FIANCÉE FARCE was entertaining from beginning to end.
Much like many of my reading experiences, I jumped into this without knowing what I was getting myself into and imagine my joy and surprise when the trope of "marriage of convenience" popped up. I loved watching these characters fall in love with each other, and I loved seeing the thwart the horrible people in their lives. I also loved that one of the MCs has a massive love for reading (shown through her family's bookstore).
Was this the best romance I've ever read? Not really--it had some pretty obvious climactic points and some very over the top villains--but it held my attention and I fell for the couple. I loved that one helped the other find her confidence that had been stripped from her at a younger age.
One of the things that keeps me from giving this a five star rating is how...in a bubble this story feels? Like, we meet other characters as they serve their purpose (as is the usual) but if they're not in the scene, it's like they don't exist. There's one scene where one particular character doesn't speak and it's a pretty pivotal moment for the reader to pay extra attention because this is a huge hint about this character, but Bellefleur doesn't even hint at it? It's like that character is deleted from the scene. This is like taking the adage of "when you're with me, I only see you" and using it to the max.
Other than that, this was an entertaining and sexy story of proving assholes wrong and falling in love despite you believing that you're not deserving of love. Highly recommend for enough looking for a cute romance full of family drama and fake relationships!
___
12. Ana On the Edge by A.J. Sass--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such a powerful story!
One of my favourite messages that ANA ON THE EDGE could potentially give young readers that it is OKAY to be in the process of trying to figure out who you are, but also that it's okay to not have all of the answers at once.
We see the MC struggle with their identity and their relationships throughout the whole book, especially because their world has always seemingly had such clear cut gender norms (Ice skating is a huge part of her world). I can't even imagine trying to find who you are when everyone around you is imposing who they think you are on you.
I also enjoyed that we got to see some of the more pivotal relationships in the MCs life and that messy in-between with friendships when big changes happen--like sudden schedule changes, or new friendships blossom. While this book tackled pretty big topics, I liked that its core it was still truly an MGLit book that explored the importance of friendships and keeping the good ones alive (even when life gets a bit hectic.)
Finally, I adored the relationship between the MC and their mom. I loved that they were a team and even though it took a little bit of time, they had some good communication between the two of them. There were some heartwarming moments and I loved seeing them understand each other better as the story progressed.
I think this is another great LGBTQ+ book to have in my back pocket for when I need to recommend great Queer books to readers!
___
13. Mindy Kim & the Birthday Puppy by Lyla Lee and Dung Ho Hanh (Illustrations)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It's been a while since I picked up the last MINDY KIM book but this was just as cute as I remember the last two books being. There were some moments that made me tear up a little, but I'm just an emotional mess sometimes.
I loved seeing Mindy come into her own with her brand new puppy. A couple of my best friends have a puppy and as I read Mindy's adventures (or misadventures), I thought of how difficult it was for my friends to parent a brand new puppy. This is a kid's book, so I'm not surprised Mindy was able to be so successful so quickly, but in reality, puppies are a lot more work than what was shown here. BUT this didn't take away from the story at all! I love that this could be a really great resource for littles who want a puppy, but need a further understanding of the responsibilities behind it.
And much like the last two books, there were some important topics explored here: how families might look, grief, multicultural traditions, and responsibilities one might take on.
Another great addition to the series and I'll hopefully be reading the next one soon!
___
14. Suddenly by Isabelle Autissier--⭐️⭐️.5
I had a lot of expectations for SUDDENLY by Isabelle Autissier, but we all know expectations are sometimes the death knell of a story. The cover enticed me, the synopsis further pulled me in, but the clunky translation full of thesaurus-level words and the random time-jump totally took me out of the story.
Normally, I DNF books that aren't working for me because hi, I have a massive TBR to get through before I die. But I will give Autissier this: she wrote a very intriguing beginning to her book. I wanted to see these characters survive and thrive in their new environment. A morbid sense of intrigue had me continuing the story as they mercilessly killed creatures I never thought someone could kill so coldly, and as they had massive introspection about their super privileged lives (and their first world ignorance about their importance in the grand scheme of things.)
These two characters were severely unlikable, but I couldn't help but get attached. I felt such a mixed bag of emotions towards the FMC and when the time jump happened, I felt further disconnected from not just her, but the story as a whole.
I'll be blunt: the second part of the book (or more like 3/4 way through the book) ruined this for me. I understand the importance of seeing the story of the "after" but I hated it. I think it went from being an interesting exploration of survival and humanity to the superficial experience of society marking you as a hero for surviving. I get that this is also the point: the further examination of how society is in (the character's) reality vs. the truths they realized about the societies they had grown in and how wholly unprepared they were for the battlefield of survival. I get that, but I still disliked it. From there, I felt like the story dragged and my attention wavered even more.
And don't get me started on the ending--the page I thought was going to be the last page was a better last page than the actual last page.
Overall, I liked the first half of the book. Despite the dark aspects, the gut churning choices, and the heartbreaking conclusion, I enjoyed that part. The second part of the book brought the whole story down for me.

15. Fake Dates & Mooncakes by Sher Lee--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
FAKE DATES AND MOONCAKES was a pretty straightforward and easy read, but listen, it was FUN. This felt like I was experiencing a K-Drama or C-Drama. It was such a good time--the dramatic twists, the threats against the middle class guy dating the rich guy, and the CRAZY RICH ASIANS-like trip and event? Freaking amazing. LOL the love interest literally waits for the MC outside of his school standing by his Ferrari. This is juicy Asian-drama level stuff and I ate. it. up.
The romance was adorable and sweet and I won't lie, I sometimes forgot these were teenagers--not because of anything gross, but because these two were so mature in their actions and how they interacted with each other.
The familial relationships were so sweet and I loved how they clearly had each others' best interests in mind whenever something pivotal happened. They were adorable and I loved them.
Reading this was like experiencing some of my favourite Asian dramas again, with a dash of CRAZY RICH ASIANS. It wasn't an earth-shattering read, but five stars for solely being entertaining and making me smile with giddiness. If you want a cute gay story with some truly cute moments, then you might like this--especially as a read for when the warmer weather finally returns!
___
Have you read any of these books? Would you recommend them?

Happy reading!

Hey so, gonna go on a rant here but can we agree that treating kids like shit is bad? I've seen a trend of a lot content that makes fun of gen alpha for being brand consumerist, or having bad jokes, or even not being able to read. Like guys these are preteens. These a kids who have had the trauma of unfiltered internet access worse than we did, and I was born in the late 2000's. Like it's not these kids fault they've been raised in a capitalistic hellscape, or had a tablet shoved in front of them since they were born, which SIDE NOTE, I think it's really fucked up we are also acting like that's a result of lazy parenting, like people have to work multiple jobs just to stay afloat, many families can't afford nanny's or babysitters, also how lots of jobs these days require you to be "on call" while you are AT HOME. Also on the not being able to read thing, that's just so fucked up, like you do realize how fucked up that is. Not only is it just like ableist as hell to kids with developmental disabilities, but also like did y'all just forget COVID happened? Is *still* happening. We were did education completely online for two to three years, like ofc that's gonna have setbacks, elementary kids cannot be expected to sit still and be able to pay attention. I went into COVID in middle school, and it was hard as hell. Ofc these kids are gonna have setbacks, ofc they are gonna struggle more, we all do, we all did.
Sorry for ranting but when did we start blaming kids for the crime of being kids, I'm not gonna ask you to grow up, because there is no shame in being young, but you are no better than boomers.

I've been hearing a lot of "gen alpha can't read cause they're iPad kids."
But like are we asking them what they *can* do?
Or how *they're* feeling even?
I distinctly remember adults when I was a kid saying we'd all be "brain dead" because of tv or texting or the Internet or some shit. And we couldn't defend ourselves cause we were literally children.
It's like this every time.
And every time each generation has to prove they're worthy of adulthood.
And this gen isn't even all in middle school yet and y'all are calling them failures right in front of their faces. It's not ganna help. If anything it'll make this much much worse.
I'm a Gen Z (well I'm in the transitional area between millennial and Z but most millennials tell me I'm gen z so fine.) I have gen alpha kids. And a lot of them (classmates and the like) are anxious asf about the world.
I wonder if they're putting up a tough front to keep the only control they have in the world as children.
Or living free before they have to become the overworked adults they see in their lives.
Or ya know death by school shootings if they're in America.
Or idk die from a once in a century plague cause their parents won't let them get vaccinated.
Or maybe it's something we could never describe or understand since we're not in that position.
Honestly every commentator I've seen on this topic hasn't asked a child how they literally feel. Like you don't have to put them on camera obviously (maybe don't actually for their safety) but like just ask? Or find ways to ask, kids can be shy about their true feelings sometimes. Especially if we keep pretending like we know them.
Teachers are over worked, parents are over worked. But haven't they always been? (Maybe we should actually do something about that? Like a lot have already been saying, but like actually do it? Maybe baby sit your friend's kid or go to the grocery store with them to help chaperone them? And try and do it for them for free, I get it if you can't but those who can should. I'm also not saying your should steal baby supplies, I'd never say that, I'd also never say to just steal food and hand them out, or to steal teaching and school supplies and just give em away or anything of course not! And I wish I could put the proper tone marks on this but for legal purposes I am being sarcastic.)
And doesn't each generation come with more problems or perceived problems because that's life? We're always going to find something wrong with the younger generation, we're constantly evolving and we're constantly looking for ways how.
Last thing.
What is intelligence?
Is it *really* being able to read?
Is it *really* scoring high on tests for studies?
Didn't we *just* talk about how standardised tests are wild and are often not very good at displaying what kids can actually do? Or are often hard to grade because of lack of staffing? Something something Pearson? Something something my history text book was older than me something something "Bill Clinton the president everyone is looking forward to!" Written on the back page Something something coming home to see late night TV making jokes about his shitty behaviour but making it more about the person who was literally harmed by this and making fun of her well into the 2000s..... (Oh has our education system and environment for kids always been kinda shitty? No way almost like it's a never ending battle.)
Have we truly figured out if the kids are alright?
Have they ever been?
Do we even know what that fucking means????

I wanna talk directly to the members of Gen Z who can hear me for a moment
Because it hit me just now that we have ourselves an opportunity!
The greatest generation. The silent generation. The baby boomers. Generation X, and I'm sad to say Millenials;
Have ALL spent freaking YEARS talking shit about the next generation after them.
"This generation doesn't know how to write with chalk"
"This generation is too obsessed with books"
"This generation watches too much TV and won't read books"
"This generation is killing the TV industry"
"This generation is terminally online"
It's fucking stupid.
But we have a chance. A real chance here.
You're becoming adults. You mostly ARE adults now. And generation Alpha has already been born.
Of course there's gonna be some argument at some point of when Z stopped and when Alpha began, and that's fucking stupid too because honestly generations don't exist like that, strictly speaking.
But in a few years, there's gonna be a temptation to draw some sort of separation between the older teens and young adults of today, and your baby siblings, or your children if you choose to have them.
And that's where we have an opportunity. Millenials I'm talking to you too because you're the ones HAVING these children and you KNOW you want the world to be different for them than it was for you.
So here's what we do:
No matter what new technology comes out in the next few years
No matter how much time gen Alpha spends USING that technology
We won't shit on them for it!
We refuse.
We've seen the cycle. And we can fucking break it.
The new tech is some fucking hivemind protocol that we struggle to use?? And the kids just jump on it immediately?
Then struggle! Work to understand it. Meet them where they are and teach them about life anyway.
When they reach their late teen years, go back and look. Look at you from TODAY. and see how fucking SICK you are of older generations shitting on younger generations for embracing a technology that genuinely has made your life easier and better *and isn't that the fucking point?*
Congratulate them on mastering something that's genuinely hard to do, and USE that technology to teach them about particle physics and chemistry and math and show them what this universe is capable of.
Make life COOL for them instead of a grinding slog.
Oh
And one more thing
Causality is something the universe can't ignore
No matter how weird your math is or how technical your theory. Nobody can ignore.. like... how things happen in a practical sense.
Causality allows us to bypass the annoying and complicated math to just show what the heck the universe is doing and THAT, I think, is a good place to start for kids.
You don't even have to call it that. Big stupid word, what even is that. No. Show them stuff happening under a microscope or through a telescope. Show them a screen on a spectrum analyzer and open up your phone to let them see the line shift when it sees your phone picking up a signal. They don't NEED to know the math to see "when the phone starts a video, the line jumps! That's so cool!"
That's a GREAT place to start and if we meet them there, we might just be able to stay connected with them and never feel the need to say the same dumb shit people have been saying every generation for which we have records.

Every fledgling alpha or omega has a Keeper. Their role is to model appropriate bonding behaviours — and eventually, to take or provide their ward’s first knot — to promote a smooth transition from childhood to sexual maturity. Welcome to Curtis's Container Commune!
SUBMISSIONS CLOSED
Or.. it will be a commune one day, but he needs a hand or two first! Technically seven extra pairs of hands... As of right now, all Curtis has is an empty container and a vision! That vision is a self-sufficient community, a greener world and hopefully some nicer digs.
Sure he has no money, the air is putrid, the soil barren... There's no stove, no proper bathroom, no beds, no food, no power, no water, uh.. we'll stop there, but you get the picture. It's gonna be great, right?!
Tired of the rat race? Want to get your hands dirty? Parents kicked you outta their basement? Wanna make some new friends.. maybe more?! Look no further!
Please send your applications to the former Cassidy residence as Curtis doesn't have a mailbox yet (warning: Cassie will read them all)
You might be asking; Becca, what the hell is this? Well... It's a rags to riches style mini "BC" I suppose.. though also, not really 🤔 The idea being that Curty here builds up a container community with seven other sims, since he's the jade generation of the NSB2 challenge... Maybe he finds love, maybe not? I guess you could consider it a rough take on a BC since he could fall in love with one of em? But obviously there's no roses, challenges, dates or eliminations and some sims may leave due to.. idk, not being able to cope, falling out with members of the community, whatever else?? We're wingin' it here as per, so we'll see what happens.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of right now I'm on patch 1.89.214.1030 and have no plans to update. Any submissions need to be made/have been made for this patch or earlier. I'm sorry to potentially cut some of you off from submitting but I'm just not willing to potentially break my game for this shit lmao.
Info: Curtis is a vegetarian, recycle disciple, green fiend with the Eco Innovator aspiration aka the Jade Gen of the NSB2.
Seven sims will be chosen! (I learnt my lesson last time, no more!!)
Occults are allowed but ehhh.. not preferred.
All sims/genders/sexualities are welcome! YA preferred.
Sims may have jobs, likes and dislikes, freelance careers etc if you wish but we're sticking it to the man for the most part, so..?
Curtis is a dummy so he's not screening this shit. Obviously handy sims, gardeners etc etc would be the most use but if you wanna throw a squeamish spanner in the works, go ahead!
In a similar vein, feel free to give 'em some skills!
Sims may not bring any money with them. We're starting from 0!
I have all packs/kits except journey to Shituu and High School whatever it is.
At least one outfit per category.
CC allowed but keep it light on the clothes plx, no alpha hair either.
Give 'em as much or as little backstory as you wish. They're ultimately just gameplay sims so you don't have to go nuts if you can't be arsed.
Any in game traits allowed but keep it real y'know.. 3 traits only and no custom traits plx!
Wicked Whims is in effect 👀
Non "winners" or sims that choose to leave may stay in my game as a townie or be returned to their creator.
Hmmmm.. I think that's it? Idk.. any questions or w/e shoot me a dm!
Bear in mind this is simple gameplay so posts will just be like my regular gp posts, it's not gonna be some big production with dialogue or anything. I just felt like bringing some other peoples sims along for a fun little experiment to spice things up.
Tag me and your simmies with #Curtis'sCommune so I can see em! Deadline for submissions is August 30th (ish). I have a busy two weeks coming up so this may be longer if I can't get my shit together.. or shorter if I get a ridiculous amount. Somnium is my baby and comes first so this is gonna be real chill! Curtis is still a teen atm so it's all gooood, I won't be starting straight away.

I haven't fully figured out the schedule, but keep you can expect to see new chapters on Fridays (I'm aiming for weekly, but I can't always promise that, because you know... life).
Rating: Explicit
Content Warning(s): Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, A/B/O Dynamics, Knotting, Classism, Blood Purity Ideologies, Second Gender Frustrations, Lying, Self-Deprecation, Depression, Depressive Thoughts, Sexual Violence, Mpreg, Pregnancy Loss
Pairing or Gen: James Potter/Remus Lupin, Remus Lupin/Sirius Black, Sirius Black/Kingsley Shacklebolt, Lily/Evans/James Potter (past relationship), Fabian Prewett/James Potter (past relationship, Lily Evans/Original Male Character, Regulus Black/Rabastan Lestrange, Frank Longbottom/Alice Longbottom
Prompt: #11: “I’m scared of my Heat.” “Don’t be, I’ll take care of you.”
Summary: James sighed, slumping into a seat at the table. “I’m having trouble with my suppressants.”
“Oh?” Remus shared a look with Sirius.
“Apparently, I’ve been on them a little too long and they’re starting to wear on me. Affect my health.” He chewed on his bottom lip. “My dad thinks that perhaps I should take a different approach to managing my Heats instead of relying on suppressants.”
Sirius stopped his chewing. “Have you met someone? Do we need to make other arrangements for ourselves?”
James shook his head. “I know that I can go to a Centre and be matched with an Alpha that would be compatible for me but I haven’t shared my Heat with someone like that in a… in a long time… So the idea of going to the Centre is not ideal… and, erm… my dad suggested that I should do that with someone I trust.” He swallowed thickly. “And I only really trust the two of… the two of you, so…”
Read it here.

TS4 Lepacy Challenge (or how TS4 finally got me) pt.1
Hi! [waving and brushing off cobwebs] How are you guys?
Tumblr media
In short, during the time I was away from Tumblr, I basically lost all interest in playing Sims when I lost all my stuff. Over a decade of CC, poses. It became impossible to recreate everything, and TS4 didn't work for me. Until... I realized that every time I played TS4, I would download everything, all the DLCs, thousands of CCs, mods, and end up feeling lost and bored. With previous generations, I always played from the beginning, knowing everything that was native to the game, following the DLCs one after the other. So I thought about following a Legacy Challenge to try to experience this in a structured way. I wanted to experience TS4, to know every item in the game, its flaws (so I could later search for the mods that I really needed)
About the challenge
The one I'm following is this one (which is already outdated, but I'll keep going as long as I can).
I'll confess to you guys, I'm following it in a very low-profile way. I always imposed so many rules on my TS3 saves that this time I just wanted to have fun. So basically, I play vanilla (the only mods I have are maxis match skins and eyes that I downloaded around the 3rd generation). And to be completely honest, I LOVED the game's aesthetic like this! It was tough at first because I always used TS3 alpha, so it seemed overly cartoonish. But that's exactly why I fell in love when I realized how cute this game is! What I did was disable all the DLCs (here's how to do it) and I'm enabling the packs according to the challenge instructions. Sometimes I follow the recommendations of the generation, sometimes I don't. It all depends on whether I'm having fun with those tasks or not. I always try to use the objects, clothes, and hairstyles from the expansion/pack of the generation to have a real immersion in that theme and get to know everything that was made available new in that generation.
It's funny because with each generation, I get so excited about the new things I'll have! I look at all the objects, read about the expansions, and try to do everything I can. Some excite me more than others, especially themes that don't appeal to me much like supernatural ones. But I'll tell you more about it in the next posts. I also try to follow the wishes of the Sims whenever possible, to see where the game naturally takes me. Usually, the firstborns are the ones who continue the challenge. But sometimes other children steal the show. Also, in some generations, I simply have no patience for babies and adopt a child. I also use Sims from the gallery a lot, both for townies and to follow the generation (sometimes I have zero patience to raise a Sim, so I make my own rules!) I always try to let Sims get involved with townies unless it's not possible (or they're terrible and I'm not in the mood for a makeover). I play with normal Sim lifespan and full autonomy. Gen 1 - 3
Gen 1: Base Game Gen 2: Outdoor Retreat Gen 3: Get to Work (Part 1) + Luxury Party stuff Unfortunately - or fortunately - when I started, I was having so much fun that I forgot to take photos!
In Gen 1, I couldn't reach the top of the comedian career, and I was surprised by how much there is to do with just the base game. Maybe I've always seen the game in a biased way, I admit.
In the first generation, there was a lot of family drama and fights because of the hot-headed and goofball matriarch. That bitch even stole her daughter's boyfriend, which left me IN SHOCK. An abusive relationship between mother and daughter, major drama!
Gen 2 was kind of boring; that camping pack is pretty disappointing. It's all very shallow and hard to get into, plus it feels kinda "stuck," I can't really explain it. But it was cool to develop the freelance writer career and write about all the traumas her mom caused (yeah, the storyteller never rests). And being a good loner, I loved taking her to Granite Falls for the whole weekend in a cabin writing.
As expected, she met a guy dressed as a bear at the camp and married him. He was the total lumberjack cliché. They lived happily ever after!
Gen 3, I realized the goals for this generation were impossible. I tried doing the bakery and being a detective and failed miserably. My sim was always tired, with no time for anything (missing a mod to slow down the game). I spent more time renovating Magnolia Promenade than playing. I was excited about the next generation. Gen 4 - Get to Work (Part 2) + Perfect Patio stuff
Tumblr media
Here, I think the challenge really started for me. This is where I started to get attached to the characters. I completely ignored the generation's instructions and focused on the detective career. Terrible graphics settings and no time for decoration. This crazy lady got involved with Don Lothario and had TWINS. Their relationship was kinda messed up, but he turned out to be a great dad. Over time, he was so in love with her. They got married, she reached the top of the detective career, and he was a great stay-at-home dad and trophy hubby.
Tumblr media
They bought a lovely house in Oasis Springs with a gorgeous patio. That boy there won me over. He was super curious and interested in computers. He was already programming from a young age. He was the chosen one.
Gen 5: Spa Day
I kinda skipped that one, I confess. I was too attached to my sims. What I did was, after retiring, my sim and Don Lothario became regulars at the spa, making use of all the services whenever possible, and hitting the gym, of course.
Gen 6: Get Together + Romantic Garden stuff
Tumblr media
The heir moved to Windenburg to live his life as a IT worker.
Tumblr media
Fell in love with Cintia Behr at the first party and ended up completing the generation recommendations with her. DJ and painting skills. He made a lot of money programming.
Tumblr media
Don Lothario passed away from old age a bit later, and he got a call from his mom inviting him to the park. When they arrived, they just chilled, watching the clouds and chatting. I thought it was pretty sweet!
Tumblr media
Their first kid was a cutie! And sticking to the generation's rules, I I made him grow up with cooking skills and traits.
Tumblr media
They had two kids and lived in Cintia's house in downtown Windenburg. What a BEAUTIFUL city! I'm totally in love with it! Gen 7: Dine Out + Cool Kitchen stuff
Tumblr media
The heir was like 100% into the cooking career his whole life.Never had any interest in other sims. Maybe it was trauma? 'Cause when he was a teen, his dad got involved with Hugo Villareal, and his mom died of rage when she found out (D-R-A-M-A). Dad moved out, and he had to raise his sister all by himself. Poor boy. But he forgave his dad after a while. His sister, though, never did.
Tumblr media
I loved his sister! Totally rebellious, snobby, and sassy. The only person in the world she liked was her brother, and because of her troublemaker teenage personality, I downloaded the Basemental Drugs mod and it was a blast. Skipping school in the afternoons to drink and smoke with friends. Her brother didn't have any kids, and she was too precious not to be the heir.
Gen 8: City Living + Bowling Night stuff
Tumblr media
Well, that snobby girl grew up and, as expected, became a food critic, partly thanks to her brother's influence (I mean, growing up eating the finest cuisine out there, you can't settle for any crap, right?). She fell in love at the Romance Festival just like the script said and had a cute little boy. I still had Basemental installed, and sometimes she and her wife would smoke a joint. Then one random day, her wife got BUSTED for carrying weed. I didn't know about those settings, and it was awful! The kid grew up without one of his moms, and it was super sad. Luckily, when she became elderly, she got out of jail and they lived their last days in peace. I uninstalled it right after. San Myshuno is pretty cute but kinda small :( But I'm really into the urban vibe, so I'll definitely come back to rebuild the city at some point.
I'll continue in the next post ;)

Ok it's /srs time
⭐Ok. This might be out of place for this blog but it was kinda the whole reason i made it so. Bear with me.⭐ most Gen Alpha kids are assholes. You know it, we know it. But do you really know it? Ok, sure. You've heard the stories- parents letting their kids go play in the park, some little prick bothering their kid, the kid's parent not doing anything. But what about older kids? What about their points of view? ⭐Lets talk school.⭐ Middle schoolers are, for lack of a better word, the spawn of satan. We've got a pretty wide cast. 1. Stereotypical 'if you're not like me you're a weirdo and a freak' 2. 'Skibidi ohio rizz gyatt' 3. The actually smart kids 4. Can't read or form a grammatical sentence 5. Traumatized kids 6. Parents don't care what they do at all. If you didn't like your elementary school peers, you aren't gonna like middle school at all. Because when you go into middle school, your school and the other district are going to mix. Which is okay for a few social butterflies, but not many. You'll be stuck clinging onto whatever little friend group you had before and hoping you all stay together. These kids are certainly something when it comes to being a bully in school. These kids rip into eachother (verbally) for practically no reason. They're snappy and mean. If you aren't just like them you might as well just go kys. They find groups of kids like themselves and form this kind of pyramid scheme in which everyone falls into four categories. Like this:
Tumblr media
And this is (From what I've seen) consistent in each grade. The funny guys & teacher's kids are usually the same. They do just about everything without any consequence whatsoever. They like to target the outcasts because they're the most responsive and that's what they look for. The popular girls are certainly something. They shit talk their own 'best friends' whenever they can, they target the outcast kids in their shit talking and rumors all the time, and hardly ever get any consequence. If you're a girl and you're not in their group, you might as well write your will now. And that's not even talking about the whole 'sending nudes to anyone and posting them on their snapchat' thing. (Whole can of worms.) The Computer Addicts are usually a little annoying, but pretty nice kids. They're usually not too smart, truth be told, I know maybe 2 who can form a proper sentence and spell. And finally, the outcasts. I myself and most of my friends fall into the outcast category. The outcasts are the nicest, smartest, most understanding and diverse group of kids. There's the Genshin Impact/Honkai Star Rail kids, the scene kids, the autistic kids (Like myself), the 'I'm just here, let's be friends' kids, the furries, the trans/gay/whatever else kids, etc. etc. They get picked on by everyone and are almost always the butt of the joke. Especially the autistic kids. ⭐Ok big rant over⭐ Middle school is literally being thrown into a pit of hungry, rabid coyotes and being told 'you're on your own, kid.'

literally just started watching a youtube video about "millennial parents" and how all their kids are "cocomelon addicted ipad kids" who "read on a fourth grade level when they're in seventh grade" while claiming millennials also gave us "every problematic youtuber ever" and like... the generational divide is INSANE because she's literally wrong right off the bat.
for one, millennials were not raised by boomers - they were raised by gen x, like SOME of gen z. some of gen z is raised by millennials too, since by 1997 - 2005, there were millennials old enough to have a child and therefore had children. gen z is the millennial kids, gen alpha is a mixture of gen z & millennial kids. that's why they're called generations. therefore, gen z "calling out" millennial parents is like. ok it's fine to say you PERSONALLY had bad parents but your experiences are not fuckin universal.
second of all, some of gen alpha is, in fact, behind. this was true for ALL generations, btw. anecdotal evidence from a teacher doesn't really replace any studies on this topic, and it's weird to act as if it's a moral failing of the parents.
also as a whole, everyone is becoming ruder and playing videos out loud. this is also not something we can blame on millennial parents, though like. buy your fuckin kids some headphones before taking them on a long haul flight across the atlantic ocean PLEASE. i will BUY your kids headphones if you can't afford it but oh my god i do not want hear your kids childrens' tv show!!
third of all, being "cringe" isn't a bad thing. going "oh millennials are so cringe" is such a weird sentiment because like... everyone can be cringe. my god, gen x and boomers can be cringe. gen z can be cringe. you need to let go of the idea of "cringe" being a criticism you can levy against someone. "embarassing" isn't a moral failing either. you will be embarrassing too, such as the moment you decided to upload a video acting like all millennial parents are bad parents.
finally, gentle parenting. she fully blames gentle parenting for the flaws with gen alpha and like.... no? gentle parenting also isn't the opposite of authoritarian parenting either. the idea behind gentle parenting is that instead of screaming at your kids or physically assaulting them, you would gently correct their behavior and encourage good behavior. it does NOT mean being a doormat. do some parents execute it wrong? yea. but hoping on the trend of making fun of the concept of gentle parenting is such boomer shit that it's wild gen z is so happy to do it.
anyway all this rant to say: millennial parents are not any worse than any other parents.
