a fun wasp for your appreciation: this is Leucospis affinis. like some other chalcidoids, she’s got thick “thighs,” although she’s a giant compared to the tiny parasitoids she’s related to, at about the size of a yellowjacket wasp (a little smaller, really).
Tumblr media
Leucospis has a very long ovipositor that rests curved over her back. when she finds a suitable piece of wood that has a leafcutter bee nest in it, she seemingly splits her abdomen in half, unsheathing the wire-like inner portion of the ovipositor that she uses to drill through the wood to reach her target.
Tumblr media
a cute face!
unusually for chalcidoids, her wings are furled when at rest and stick out at angles, rather than lying flat on her back. this, plus her large size and black-yellow-maroon color scheme, makes her an almost perfect mimic of local potter wasps—a good thing to be disguised as, since while she cannot sting with her ovipositor, potter wasps definitely can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
her mimicry was so good that I thought I was looking at two Euodynerus hidalgo boreoorientalis nectaring on this boneset. the second one is the real thing, though—no crazy ovipositor or beefy thighs!

below the cut (because there are so many bug pictures) i would like to post. a gallery of WASP DIVERSITY
Tumblr media
ruby tailed wasp. it rolls up like a pillbug to protect itself and cannot sting. it lays its eggs in other wasp nests
Tumblr media
blue mud dauber. not aggressive, males cannot sting. adults are pollinators, their young eat black widow spiders. It's also blue if you can believe that
Tumblr media
pelecinid wasp. cannot sting. this has two population groups - one in the southern us & most of south america that does regular parasitic wasp stuff, and a population in the rest of north america consisting only of females that reproduce asexually.
Tumblr media
baeus wasp. this guy is fucking crazy. flightless & preys on spider eggs. and it's small as hell
Tumblr media
fairyfly. world's smallest insect. lays eggs in other insects' eggs and only lives a few days.
Tumblr media
doddifoenus rex. having trouble finding more information about the species.
Tumblr media
chalcura. check out those antennae! preys on ants.
Tumblr media
tarantula hawk. even more pretty antennae! one of the largest parasitoid wasps. preys on tarantulas. very docile, but does have one of the most painful recorded stings of all insects - it's beat only by the bullet ant on the schmidt pain index. just don't fuck with it though it's not going to go after you
Tumblr media
thread waisted wasp. isnt she cool! one got stuck in my bathroom once.
Tumblr media
giant ichneumon wasp. isn't that crazy! unable to sting. preys on one specific other species of wasp (pigeon horntail).
Tumblr media
organ pipe mud dauber. described by wikipedia as "exceedingly docile" so you know she knows what's up... and she makes nests out of clay because she's a beautiful little potter. so apparently these guys are haplodiploid, which means that they'll just lay eggs and any unfertilized eggs generate males and fertilized eggs generate females. that's weird.
Tumblr media
steel blue cricket hunter. You'll never guess what she hunts.
anyway umm yes. WASPS. theres so many cool wasps out there. Dont let yellow jackets poison wasps for you i promise theyre not all like that ...

get 2 know me meme
tagged by: @crithir said if you see it, you're tagged. And I saw it, so...
tagging: In the spirit of the boops, boop! you're tagged now.
Do you make your bed?
Only if someone's coming over.
What’s your favorite number?
7 because it was usually my assigned number in elementary school. There was a whole system where we all had numbers after our names that we had to put on the top of our assignments, and because it went in alphabetical order, and because my school was small and the class configuration rarely changed, I was writing "Cora - 7"* at the top of my assignments for years. So a fondness for the number 7 kinda stuck.
*Cora is not my real name but wouldn't you like to know.
What is your job?
Technically the things I am currently employed to do and receive financial compensation for are administering neuropsych assessments to children and then a second part time job as a care aid for a disabled woman.
Arguably my dissertation is my real full time job, except no one pays me to do that. Actually, I pay them so that I can do that. So...
If you could go back to school, would you?
Absolutely not, I'm still trying to get out of school! (one more year one more year one more year...).
Can you parallel park?
Technically, yes. Skillfully? Eh...
A job you had that would surprise people?
None of my past jobs have been all that surprising, I think...human services and customer service, haven't we all been there? Maybe the day camp for disabled kids was a little bit unique.
Do you think aliens are real?
I think it's incredibly arrogant to assume we're the only planet in an ever-expanding universe to have developed life, so yes. What that life looks like, however, is up for debate.
Can you drive a manual car?
I cannot, but more than one person has threatened to teach me.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
British period dramas. And recently, Taylor Swift. I got caught up in the cultural moment of the Eras tour and it turns out when you're not just listening to the pop radio hits, she's a helluva writer. "Would've, Could've, Should've" did unfortunately alter my brain chemistry. I refuse to call myself a swiftie though, I will not be associated with...any of that.
Tattoos?
None yet, but I have a couple ideas- I want "she rules her life like a bird in flight" with some little birds next to it, possibly on my shoulder? Then I want a monarch butterfly on one of my forearms, probably the left, and finally a latin phrase that's connected to my family, I'm thinking on the underside of one my upper arms, again probably the left arm. Undecided on that though, because if I do the butterfly on the left arm maybe I should do the lettering on the right? Or vice versa?
...this is why I haven't committed to anything yet on top of them being expensive.
Favorite color?
Historically, yellow, but more recently blues and purples.
Favorite type of music?
Usually I go for a rock/pop punk sound. But also showtunes. And sometimes just regular pop. I'm kinda basic idk.
Do you like puzzles?
...in video games, sure. Actual table top puzzles? Eh.
Any phobias?
Wasps. Heights. The general concept of death.
Favorite childhood sport?
Ballet and tae kwon do (I almost made it to black belt but then college happened).
Do you talk to yourself?
Constantly. Often as if I'm talking to other people. Sometimes to my snake, Sammy.
What movies do you adore?
Kiki's Delivery Service, Mary Poppins, Anastasia, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, and I have a soft spot for 2000s teen movies (think Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, Bring It On). Also, unfortunately, the Harry Potter movies are permanently imprinted on my brain and I cannot disentangle them from some of the most special parts of my childhood. Azkaban in particular is strongly linked to my relationship with my best friend/sister in spirit.
Coffee or tea?
Tea but coffee is growing on me.
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
I think it was veterinarian? That's the first thing I remember anyway.

Privet Sawfly - Macrophya punctumalbum
This new blog specimen and Tuesday’s Fall Cankerworm showcase both have something very surprising in common! It’s tempting to immediately jump to the similarity that both of these insects begin life as worm-like creatures and then undergo complete metamorphosis into their winged adult forms. You’d be correct, but that’s not surprising enough. What could the similarity be? Leading up to it, let’s discuss this specie a bit and lead into the answer. Firstly, this colorful Sawfly is native to Europe but has found its way to North America and established itself well. It doesn’t seem to cause trouble for the plants it’s Larvae inhabit, which appear to be olives, ash, lilacs and privets. If anything, this insect might be welcome given privet hedges have an invasive reputation in North America! In any case, whichever host they hatch on. the green, worm-like larvae feed on the plant’s leaves. They may have further interactions with their host’s leaves as this adult appeared to be nibbling on the weaker eaten and mined sections of this leaf before I spooked it away. If the genus Macrophya sounds familiar here, it has a relative on this blog that looks a little more Wasp-like in terms of colors: Macrophya formosa.
The Privet Sawfly may have more luck mimicking Potter Wasps with faint striping rather than burlier yellow-striped Wasps. When looking to identify this specie, pay close attention to the colors and patterns that adorn the body and legs. This way, you can avoid all the pratfalls that I stumbled into. Initially, it looked very similar to the genera Filacus and Pristiphora but there were no matches. It was the same problem every time: the red markings on the hindleg are very distinctive. Ultimately those markings led to the Privet Sawfly, alongside the intricate configuration of black and white across the body and legs in the form of stripes, spots and markings. Specifically, all these features are found on the female Privet Sawfly; the males are all-black and are much smaller (think like the size differences found in the False Honey Ant). The males have a bit of a rare reputation in the wild, and I doubt I would ever see one. A female specimen (like this one) may have better luck, but in the event a male cannot be found for mating purposes, they can make use of parthenogenesis to produce cloned offspring, just like Fall Cankerworm females can do if needed. Moreover, this process feeds back into itself for the Sawfly whereby as parthenogenesis happens, more females are born and the male population is infinitesimal by comparison. If a mutation happens and a male is born, it may be able to give newfound genetic diversity to the next generation of Sawflies!

I haven't managed to get a lot of pics recently but I HAVE seen quite a few wasps around! Including: an iridescent blue/green cuckoo wasp, a small wasp (potter wasp?) with oddly round abdomen (as opposed to pointed at the end), a black ichneumon wasp drilling into a fence, a wasp that appeared to be mostly bright red and that acted like a mud dauber as it dug into some sand, another mason wasp that got into my room through the window (successfully freed), a thread-waisted wasp that seems to like drinking/collecting rain water from one particular spot, and a pair of yellow jackets (common yellow jacket and bald faced hornet respectively) fighting each other midair!

Gasoline -Fred Weasley-
Chapter Two
I made it back to the campsite and sat down beside Fred.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I don't know why you don't like Aiden, and that's completely your business."
Fred looked at me before saying, "I just don't think he'd be good for you. He dated both Alicia and Katie last year. At the same time. He hurt them pretty badly, and then the next moment you told me you two were studying together and then it turned into talking more and sending each other owls. All I could think about was that he was going to do the same thing to you."
I stared at him for a moment before flinging my arms around him in a hug. Fred stumbled backwards for a moment before he regained his footing, wrapping his arms around me in return.
        "What's this for?" he laughed.
"For always trying to look out for me," I replied, pulling back.
Fred laughed before gently shoving me away. Harry, Ron, and Hermione finally showed back up after being gone for a really long time.
"You've been ages," said George when they finally got back to the tents.
"Met a few people," said Ron, setting the water down. "You not got that fire started yet?"
"Dad's having fun with the matches," said Fred.
My eyes drifted over to Mr. Weasley who was having no success at all in lighting the fire, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Splintered matches littered the ground around him, but he looked as though he was having the time of his life. He managed to light a match and promptly dropped it in surprise.
"Come here, Mr. Weasley," said Hermione kindly, taking the box of matches from him and showing him how to do it properly.
She finally got the fire going, but it wasn't until an hour later that it was even how enough to cook on. While we all waited for it to heat up, I shifted to where I was laying in the grass, listening to Fred and George whisper back and forth about their products. A popping sound caused me to jump and look at where it came from. I finally found the source, Percy, Bill, and Charlie had Apparated, and Percy just had to announce it. We were halfway through our plates of eggs and sausages when Mr. Weasley jumped to his feet, waving and grinning at a man who was striding toward us.
"Aha!" he shouted. "The man of the moment! Ludo!"
I looked over to see Luda Bagman in long Quidditch robes in thick horizontal stripes of bright yellow and black. An enormous picture of a wasp was splashed across his chest. He had the look of a powerfully built man gone slightly to seed; the robes were stretched tightly across a large belly he surely had not had in the days when he had played Quidditch for England. His nose was squashed, but his round blue eyes, short blond hair, and rosy complexion made him look like a very overgrown schoolboy.
"Ahoy there!" Bagman called happily. "Arthur, old man, what a day, eh? What a day! Could we have asked for more perfect weather? A cloudless night coming, and hardly a hiccough in the arrangements. Not much for me to do!"
Percy hurried forward with his hand outstretched. Apparently his disapproval of the way Ludo Bagman ran his department did not prevent him from wanting to make a good impression.
"Ah-yes," said Mr. Weasley, grinning, "this is my son Percy. He's just started at the Ministry, and this is Fred, George, Bill, Charlie, Ron, Fallon, my daughter Ginny, and Ron's friends, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter. Everyone, this is Ludo Bagman, you know who he is, it's thanks to him we've got such good tickets-"
Bagman beamed and waved his hand as if to say it had been nothing.
"Fancy a flutter on the match, Arthur?" he said eagerly, jingling what seamed to be a large amount of gold in the pockets of his yellow-and-black robes. "I've already got Roddy Pontner betting me Bulgaria will score first - I offered him nice odds, considering Ireland's front three are the strongest I've seen in years - and little Agatha Timms has put up half shares in her eel farm on a week-long match."
"Oh, go on then," said Mr. Weasley. "Let's see. A Galleon on Ireland to win?"
"A Galleon?" Bagman looked slightly disappointed, but recovered himself. "Very well, very well. Any other takers?"
"They're a bit young to be gambling," said Mr. Weasley. "Molly wouldn't like-"
Before he could finish his sentence, the twins got up, "We'll bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles, three Knuts that Ireland wins but Viktor Krum gets the Snitch. Oh and we'll throw in a fake wand."
"You don't want to go showing Mr. Bagman rubbish like that-" Percy hissed, but Bagman didn't seem to think the wand was rubbish at all; on the contrary, his boyish face shone with excitement as he took it from Fred, and when the wand gave a loud squawk and turned into a rubber chicken, Bagman roared with laughter.
"Excellent! I haven't seen one that convincing in years! I'd pay five Galleons for that!"
I could see Percy froze in stunned disapproval and snickered to myself.
"Boys," said Mr. Weasley under his breath, "I don't want you betting. That's all your savings. Your mother-"
"Don't be a spoilsport, Arthur!" boomed Bagman, rattling his pockets excitedly. "They're old enough to know what they want! You reckon Ireland will win but Krum'll get the Snitch? Not a chance, boys, not a chance. I'll give you excellent odds on that one. We'll add five Galleons for the funny wand, then, shall we.."
Mr. Weasley looked on helplessly as Bagman whipped out a notebook and quill and began jotting down the twins' names.
"Cheers," said George, taking the slip of parchment Bagman handed him and tucking it away carefully. Bagman turned most cheerfully back to Mr. Weasley.
"Couldn't do me a brew, I suppose? I'm keeping an eye out for Barty Crouch. My Bulgarian opposite number's making difficulties, and I can't understand a word he's saying. Barty'll be able to sort it out. He speaks about a hundred and fifty languages."
"Mr. Crouch? said Percy, suddenly abandoning his look of poker-stiff disapproval and positively writhing with excitement. "He speaks over two hundred! Mermish and Gobbledegook and Troll."
"Anyone can speak Troll," I stated dismissively causing Fred and George to stifle their laughter. "All you have to do is point and grunt."
Percy threw me an extra nasty look and stoked the fire vigorously to bring the kettle back to a boil.
"Any news of Bertha Jorkins yet, Ludo?" Mr. Weasley asked as Bagman settled himself down on the grass beside all of us.
"Not a dicky bird," said Bagman comfortably. "But she'll turn up. Poor old Bertha... memory like a leaky cauldron and no sense of direction. Lost, you take my word for it. She'll wander back into the office sometime in October, thinking it's still July."
"You don't think it might be time to send someone to look for her?" Mr. Weasley suggested as Percy handed Bagman his tea.
"Barty Crouch keep saying that," said Bagman, his round eyes widening, "but we really can't spare anyone at the moment. Oh, talk of the devil!"
A wizard Apparated at our fireside, and just from looking at him, he was the complete contrast with Ludo Bagman. Barty Crouch is a stiff, upright, elderly man, dressed in an impeccably crisp suit and tie.
"Pull up a bit of grass, Barty," said Mr. Bagman brightly.
"No thank you, Ludo," said Crouch with a bit of impatience in his voice. "I've been looking for you everywhere. The Bulgarians are insisting we add another twelve seats to the Top Box."
"Oh is that what they're after?" said Bagman. "I thought the chap was asking to borrow a pair of tweezers. Bit of a strong accent."
I bit my bottom lip to avoid from laughing because for whatever reason, I imagined a burly Bulgarian with a tiny pair of tweezers.
"Mr. Crouch!" said Percy breathlessly, sunk into a kind of half-bow that made him look like a hunchback. "Would you like a cup of tea?"
"Oh," said Mr. Crouch, looking over at Percy in mild surprise. "Yes, thank you, Weatherby."
The twins chocked into their cups as they took sips. I patted their backs with an amused face as I watched Percy's ears turn very pink. I shared a look with the twins, and I immediately knew that they were adding the name into their vault of teases to use against their older brother. The three Ministry employees continued their conversation as Percy hurriedly made tea. Fred and George whispered to each other, eyes darting towards their father every now and then to see whether or not he was paying attention to them. I leaned back onto my hands, allowing my hair to fall down my back.
"We agreed not to make the announcement until all the details-"
I looked at the three adults, a bit intrigued by the new information.
"Oh details!" said Bagman, waving the word away like a cloud of midges. "They've signed, haven't they? They've agreed, haven't they? I bet you anything these kids'll know soon enough anyway. I mean, it's happening at Hogwarts-"
"Ludo, we need to meet the Bulgarians, you know," said Mr. Crouch sharply, cutting Bagman's remarks short. "Thank you for the tea, Weatherby."
Crouch pushed his undrunk tea back at Percy and waited for Bagman, who was struggling to get to his feet, to rise.
"See you all later!" he said. "You'll be up in the Top Box with me - I'm commentating!"
"What's happening at Hogwarts, Mr. Weasley?" I asked once they were gone. "What were they talking about?"
"You'll find out soon enough," he replied.
"It's classified information, until such time as the Ministry decides to release it," said Percy stiffly. "Mr. Crouch was quite right not to disclose it."
"Oh shut up, Weatherby," Fred said swiftly.
"It's not like it's the Tri-Wizard," I stated with a laugh before going back to eaves dropping on Fred and George's whispering.

Whatever You Do, Please Don’t Scroll Past This
I am not good with change. After a few months of this whole quarantine thing, I went with my mom to a store for the first time since this all started. Just before we went in, I had a panic attack. I didn’t know how to handle being around people, having not dealt with them for a while. I’ve gotten used to it by now, but that was absolutely terrifying for me.
Two days ago, I was at a friend’s house when a wasp decided to fly around my head. I have severe anxiety about bugs, but I knew if I moved it would sting me, so I stayed still. I also knew if I kept my eyes open, I wouldn’t be able to stay still. So I shut my eyes, but before the black and yellow bastard flew away, it touched my eyelid. I have honestly never felt more fear in that moment.
This whole quarantine, even when I should be in my online classes, I’ve been pouring myself into what I love doing the most: art. It takes me away from this terrifying reality we live in, and helps me de-stress. There’s this one song I can play on my violin with my eyes closed. It helps me when I have a breakdown due to stress, which is unfortunately often. I re-read the Harry Potter books to whisk myself away to their world and away from mine.
It is perfectly okay to take a break now and then. In fact, it’s healthy. And never, ever, bottle it up. It’s worse when you do. Don’t overwork yourself. You’re not stupid for not understanding things. I’m one of the top students at my school, and I still have trouble working with negative numbers. Don’t let your pride get in the way of getting the help you need. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. Walk away. Take a deep breath. Walk back when you’re ready, and ask for assistance.
Reblog for the people who can’t stop worrying about things. Reblog for the people who don’t want or get the help they need. Reblog for the people who get shot down for “seeking attention”. Reblog for the people whose lives are stacked against them. Reblog for the people who face insults and oppression. Reblog for the people who’ve lost hope and have given up. Reblog for the people who feel trapped. Reblog for the people who cry without a shoulder. Reblog for the people who aren’t listened to.
Reblog to make our world a better place. Please.

How to Predict the Villan in an MCU Movie
So I’ve been watching every movie in the MCU for the first time and was discussing it on discord with some friends (because yay social distancing).
Anyway, we were discussing how the colors of the infinity stones don’t really make sense. Like, the reality stone should have been white, or a light color, space should have been dark purple or blue, etc. Then I suggested that maybe it was just to set the tone. Like, the reality stone was red, which feels like something menacing and dark, as well as foreshadowing all the bloodshed that occurs in Thor: The Dark World.
Which led to this thought in my brain:
You can predict the villain with almost 100% accuracy based on their color scheme. Heroes have primary colors and villains have secondary colors.
Hear me out. I know it sounds ridiculous, but there are rules/exceptions, which I will address as we go along.
Iron Man (2008) The Iron Man suits are red and yellow/gold, which are primary colors. Iron Monger was blue in the comics, but this is where the first rule comes in.  Rule #1: If a character is introduced with storytelling elements that show that they are very obviously a bad guy, they may have primary colors.  Obadiah Shane is introduced as the typical “Number Two to a very powerful person who dies and doesn’t become CEO because the powerful person has a playboy son who doesn’t deserve it in Number Two’s mind” guy. He’s got the fake-somber look at Howard’s Stark’s death and is quite literally in Tony’s shadow while giving him a not-so-subtle evil glare.
The Incredible Hulk (2008) This is a fun one because Hulk is Green, which is a secondary color, but it’s symbolic in a couple ways. (This is one of those exceptions) 1) Banner sees the Hulk as a disease, a monster. To him, Hulk IS the villain of his story. It’s also a hint towards the real villain. 2) The actual villain is Abomination, who is basically just a large Hulk and also green.
Iron Man 2 (2010) The main villain is Ivan Vanko/Whiplash, who’s big entrance is in an orange jumpsuit. You could argue that Justin Hammer is the bad guy, but we know him from Iron Man 1.
Thor (2011) Thor gets red and Loki gets green. Enough said. I know it could be argued that Loki is a good guy, but I’m talking about just this movie. You see Loki in an all-green outfit, you know he’s going to do a bad. (Also, Hawkeye is introduced in this movie. His color scheme in the comic books is purple, but he’s on the “other side” in Thor, so it checks out.)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Cap’s suit is red and blue. I know Red Skull is, well, red, but this goes back to rule number one. Very obviously a villain. He’s a Nazi. Even the Joker doesn’t like working with the Nazis.
Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) Loki’s the villain again, and Thanos, who is purple, is behind it. We also introduce Black Widow here and her colors are RED and black. ALSO ALSO, who is the only Avenger who gets mind-controlled? Hawkeye, who is purple in the comics, black the entire time he’s with Loki, and gets maroon (dark red) accents once he’s back with the Avengers.
Iron Man 3 (2013) Killian’s power makes orangey fire.
Thor: The Dark World (2013) Kurse has a mostly black and white thing going on, but he does get some red here and there. But... Rule 1. The red looks like blood smears...
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) We get introduced to Falcon! Who’s main color besides silver is red.  Also, I think Pierce falls under Rule 1.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Oh boy, this should be a fun one Okay: Star-Lord is red, he’s the main character, we’re supposed to like him, we’re supposed to root for him, cut and dry. Rocket is introduced with an orange outfit, Groot is greenish, and Gamora is Green. But they’re all introduced as Peter’s foes. They all become friends later on, but we’re supposed to be rooting for Peter right now. (Also Gamora’s hair is redish) Drax is grayish with red. Once they become a real team and wear matching outfits THEY. WEAR. RED. Yondu is blue, which may be a nod to the fact that he’s not really a bad guy. Ronan is blue, but this is where Rule Two comes into play! Rule #2: If a character truly believes they’re the good guys, they may have primary colors. (Based on self-awareness.) Ronan was finishing a 1,000 year war, upholding the traditions of his people, and avenging his family. Think’s he’s the good guy. Nebula being blue could be a nod to her loyalty shift later on in the story. I probably missed some, but let’s move on.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) Scarlett Witch has red, Quicksilver has blue, Vision is red, blue, AND yellow. All of the primary colors. Ultron is red, but Rule #2: Ultron was fighting for his idea of peace.
Ant-Man (2015)
Ant-Man and Wasp suits are both red. Darren Cross mostly falls under Rule 1, but I think he was wearing a green tie.
Captain America: Civil War (2016) So, Zemo’s an interesting one. In the comics, he’s got a purple thing going on, but the MCU movie has him mostly wearing black. Maybe he had a Rule 1 kind of entrance, but I don’t really remember. Black Panther is also weird because his aesthetic is purple, but he’s kind of trying to kill Bucky in this movie so.... Maybe misdirect? Maybe? Spiderman is red and blue, nothing new there. Doctor Strange (2016) Doctor Strange is red and blue. (The Eye of Afamotto is green, but I think it represents how it could cause evil if in the wrong hands, as well as the choice Stephen has to make to consciously do something good with such a powerful item. Kaecillius is a combination of Rules one and two. We are directly told he’s a villain and there’s no doubt with the way he is introduced. He’s also doing what he’s doing in order to learn more about the mystic arts and all that good stuff. Aaaaand Dormammu is purple. Yeah, ‘nuff said.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Ego’s outfit has greenish undertones, especially when he reveals he killed Peter’s mother. He also sees nothing wrong with his actions and is allowed to have touches of primary colors, but everything has touches of green here and there. (Again with the Yondu is blue thing.) Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) Vulture is green! I know that’s short, but there’s not much else to it.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) Guess what? Hela has a green color scheme.
Black Panther (2018) Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Okay, yeah, Black Panther is one of the exceptions to this rule. You could say that since T’Chaka and Erik are both the Black Panther and make mistakes for the greater good, it’s a symbol of the mistakes past Black Panthers have made. And T’Challa has to overcome those mistakes with the same name? They also both believe they’re doing the right thing? I dunno, Black Panther is just an exception movie since everything in it is just SO colorful.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Yeah, Thanos is Purple. That’s about it. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) Ghost is white with red eyes but mostly falls under rule one. (I think the energy blast that created her was orange, but don’t quote me on that.) Captain Marvel (2019) Despite the fact that I can never decide if I like this movie or not, this one is the most fun with this theory.  The Kree uniforms are green while the Skrulls are blue, which gives you a hint that the Kree are actually the bad guys.  And when Carol changes her uniform SHE CHANGES IT TO RED, BLUE, AND YELLOW/GOLD. Avengers: Endgame (2019) Oh, this one’s really hard no it isn’t, Thanos is still purple. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) So, Mysterio’s costume is red and blue because he’s trying to look heroic. BUT his magic smoke stuff is green. This is the first movie I watched after figuring this out and I immediately did not trust Mysterio. (I’m a sheltered preacher’s kid and these movies are my only experience with Marvel.)
This mostly works with the MCU, but a few other series as well.
One my friend brought up was the Grinch. He’s green, obviously. But! He does start out as the villain and only becomes a good guy when his heart grows. What color is his heart? RED.
Only Harry Potter house with a reputation for being evil? SLYTHERIN. Only Hogwarts house who’s color ISN’T a primary color? SLYTHERIN.
So.... yeah, don’t trust characters who’s outfits are mostly secondary colors.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk: An Introduction to Color Theory in Modern Film

Jonny's Insect Catalogue - Now on YouTube
As mentioned in my 5 Year Anniversary post showcasing a colony of Small Yellow Ants, the blog's reach has been expanded to YouTube as I've created a channel that will host insect videos. If you are interested in insect video content and nature, I will see you there!
With the channel up and running, all the videos featured in this blog’s Video Catalogue will eventually be uploaded there without any caveats. Videos that were previously trimmed or separated into multiple parts will be shown in full. Furthermore, the intent is to upload them chronologically, beginning with every video currently uploaded to this blog. I may jump around a bit, especially if I find an amazing insect to share. Videos will be made ready and uploaded every Sunday, creating the following upload schedule for this blog: Tuesday (Tb) >> Friday (Tb) >> Sunday (YT). For additional information, please refer to the YouTube info section of the blog. If you have further questions, I'm happy to answer them.
The rest of this post will speak briefly on the channel's welcome video (playing above), the channel's outro video and the first insect upload that will grace the channel. I hope to see you in the world of video content creation. Also, I apologize in advance for any audio "pops" heard in earlier recorded videos (particularly those from 2017-2019). Audio for those videos will be cleaned up best as possible before they are uploaded.
Tumblr media
The Channel Welcome video is intended to showcase a glimpse into the content that has been on this blog for 5 years. To keep with the natural feel, the background audio was created using the sounds from the following videos: Asian Ladybug Pupa, Cicada Hatching, Potter Wasp. Ironically, though my channel is focused on insects, the Welcome audio primarily features birds. They may like to eat insects, but they provide some of the best and most recognizable natural ambience sounds! As the video approaches the end, there's also a bit of the outro audio when the logo appears...
Tumblr media
The channel's video outro audio was created by layering the sounds of the insects in these videos into one track: Black-Legged Meadow Katydid, Brown-Belted Bumblebee, Eastern Carpenter Bee, Cicada Hatching. It was a challenge to sync the sounds to the text, but everything eventually clicked together. The outro features the famous slogan for creating a community, "Like, Share, Subscribe", and of course "Thank you for Watching". I do sincerely mean the latter, thank you! Shorter videos will use a truncated version of the outro since doesn't make sense to have the outro longer than the video itself (haha).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I originally created the thumbnails for the videos on this blog, I chose the film strip since it holds strong iconography with visual media and movies. It also seemed classy and clean as well, as if to show the best possible glimpse into the life of the recorded insects. Little did I know that 5 years later I would join them together to create film reel styled graphics for the channel's banner. The image on the left is my first draft, and the image on the right is the final draft currently in use. I didn't want to change the dimensions and content, but it had to fit YouTube's TV and Desktop parameters. Still, I couldn't bare to junk the original, so it's also included in my channel's welcome video before the insect showcase, and it's featured on the blog in a few places.
All text and image graphics used in my video will be created in photoshop. The videos will be compiled together using Clipchamp (as it's the only resource I have at the moment). Though it has tremendously lag during playback, slow finishing export and a cluttered UI, I can make it work.
Finally, the first insect video to official grace my YouTube channel will be the Monarch Butterfly I found emerging from its Chrysalis after a few days of careful observation. It's the video I'm most proud of and it showcases something truly special in the insect world. On YouTube, it has a duration of 4:46 compared to 50 seconds here (it had to be trimmed due to size limitations). I'm honored to finally show it in full. Please see for yourself: Monarch Butterfly - Emerging from its Chrysalis.
Tumblr media
Thank you to all my followers, readers, friends and family for your support and for viewing these insects. Every one of you mean the world to me. The journey into the insect world continues!
This post also represents a serendipitous milestone: 100 video posts uploaded to this blog! Here's to 100 more featuring many amazing insects!
