Yang y/n. You can hear the low whispers trailing behind your back everywhere you go. Every step you take, every move you make. Hands stuffed deep in the pockets of your baggy jeans, a stuffy mask covering half your face. Jungwon’s one and only.
You would never have minded being caught up in this type of situation with Jungwon, if it didn’t come at the expense of your deeply treasured privacy. If it didn’t mean you would spend your day treading over fragile eggshells, just so the rumours don’t fly again. So that Jungwon wouldn’t have to defend your name to the public every time a camera turns his way.
As a child, you loved the flash of a camera on you, you loved the attention. Adorned in Disney princess dresses and waving around a fairy wand with a flourish, you were the perfect model for your parents’ DIY agency. However, now, as one of HYBE’s most valued and talented trainees, you can’t help but start to despise your excessive exposure to public view.
Not to mention, when you’re caught up in a dating scandal with Belift:Lab’s Yang Jungwon, which isn’t even entirely a lie.
The sleek black cap has to be pulled further down your face in order for you to feel even a twinge of peace. Speeding up your footsteps towards the company building, you wonder how life would be if you had just accepted Jungwon straight away, like you had multiple times before in your brain’s most romantic fantasies.
What if you had accepted him? What if you had rejected him? What if you hadn’t allowed this confusion to slip into something so complicated that even the two of you can’t tell the truth from a lie.
Every day, without fail, you show Jungwon all the newest online articles, and in return he screenshots speculatory posts about the two of you and sends them to you. In a matter of a few years, your innocent camera roll went from cute selcas of yourself, to Twitter posts, ship edits, and paparazzi pictures you wish were edited.
“She must be waiting here for Jungwon!”
Hundreds of passers-by crowd around you, but their words and their faces are all a hazy blur to you. Standing still in front of the revolving pair of entrance doors, the only face you want to see is Jungwon’s.
And as if on cue, like an angel’s blessing has been bestowed upon you, there’s a tight grip on your arm in the middle of the fog. Jungwon’s faint baby scent fills your senses, a big, warm, bear hug in of itself. He lifts the cap off your head, a look of such affection and pain swamping the depths of his hazel eyes.
When did you start shaking?
Head tilted to the side, he bends down to whisper in your ear, and you have to squeeze your eyes shut to block out the loud chorus of gasps.
“You’re shaking.”
“Great job, genius. Didn’t notice,” you snap back almost instantly, careful to keep the sharp words a hint under your breath. The public etiquette classes you’ve recently started attending are doing a world of wonders for you.
”Ah,” Jungwon hums cheerfully, his arm coming to sling around your shoulder. “You’re grumpy. Sounds like you need a scoop of ice cream.”
“So suddenly?” You roll your eyes disdainfully, but quicken the pace as he starts walking down the sidewalk. The sea of fans, half screaming at the chance to see Jungwon, half shoving their phones in your faces, part like they’ve been called to do so. You should probably get used to the celebrity life, but every time this happens, a red flush of embarrassment never fails to drown out the paleness of your face.
Jungwon shoots you an encouraging, charming smile, hiding his uneasiness very well. “I was kind of kidding, but let’s get out of here, because I have something for you.”
Curiosity strikes you. “Something for me?” Your mind runs wild with the varying possibilities of cute gifts Jungwon would come up with. Because Yang Jungwon is totally the type to buy “Just because” flowers; definitely someone who’d dedicate a crocheted stuffed animal to his beloved.
Then again, you’re not his beloved, and you’re not his friend. You’re mostly stuck in between the two. While you have your reasons, sometimes you question your decisions that led up to this kind of rocky relationship.
A rocky relationship that Jungwon still somehow manages to make right.
You round a corner, and he pulls you close in the secluded alleyway. With the tantalising aroma of freshly baked buns wafting in the air, you wonder if Jungwon’s taking you out on a ‘date’ that might not really be a ‘date’ but you’d still like to consider it a ‘date’.
But he doesn’t budge from the spot you two stand awkwardly in. You look up at him, bemused, and he just pulls something out of his pocket. Your favourite shade of turquoise, complemented with black and white and beaded up into a bracelet. In the centre, marks Jungwon’s initials. YJW, in his very own handwriting, engraved into the circular polished beads.
“This is for you.” Jungwon murmurs, fitting it around your wrist without even bothering to wait for a response. He must know you already treasure this bracelet like it’s your lifeline. However, this is so weird. Are you supposed to walk around with the initials of a guy that doesn’t even belong to you displayed for everyone to see?
By the look in his eyes, Jungwon seems to think that’s completely normal. And so, you calm your racing heart. If it’s normal to Jungwon, it’s normal in your books as well.
Lightening the atmosphere, you look deep into his eyes and joke, “Shouldn’t I be wearing my own initials around?”
“Well, at least one matches up. Y. Yang. It’s like we’re married.”
And he leaves you blinking rapidly in utter confusion, laughing and slipping back onto the sidewalk. You can only stare at your wrist, vowing never to take it off. Ever.

It’s a little awkward in Jungwon’s bedroom at the moment. He sits on his bed, looking up a little at you and Heeseung who are standing at the base of it, taken aback by the request he just made. When you thought about what to give him for your birthday, the last thing you would have expected him to say is “you”. You turn to Heeseung, shrugging your shoulders, but Heeseung doesn’t look back at you, his eyes are completely fixated on Jungwon making the boy on the bed clear his throat while fixing his posture, not wanting to meet Heeseung’s gaze. You roll your eyes and look back at Jungwon.
“Are you sure this is what you really want?” you ask, still a little in shock.
Jungwon shyly nods his head as he cracks his knuckles, ears turning red from looking at you and having you finally know how he feels.
“I want my first time to be special…” he whispers, trailing off as he gets lost in your eyes.
“It can’t be special with anyone else? Why my girlfriend?” Heeseung asks, clearly pissed off, snapping Jungwon out of his daze.
“I just…trust her,” he lies, eyes flicking from looking at you back at Heeseung, “I need practice…for when I actually get a girlfriend.”
“Watch some porn.” Heeseung mumbles, making you snicker.
Jungwon’s face becomes red from embarrassment; there is no going back from this and he just dug himself into a major hole.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbles while looking down, “just forget I said anything.”
Heeseung groans and leans his head back. You exchange glances with each other and Heeseung rolls his eyes before motioning his head towards Jungwon. You give him a small smile, kissing his cheek before going to sit in front of Jungwon. He feels his bed shift, making him more nervous, as you reach your hand to hold his chin, lifting his head to look at you. You smile and his heart melts as he smiles back.
Your head turns back to look at Heeseung who lets out a sigh and starts to undo his tie. He hands it to you and you turn back to Jungwon.
“If you’re going to sleep with my girlfriend, you’re going to be blindfolded.” Heeseung says sternly, looking straight into Jungwon’s eyes.
Jungwon’s eyes widen as he shifts from looking at the tie to back and forth between you and Heeseung.
“What-” he starts to question, but Heeseung cuts him off.
“You’re also not allowed to kiss her or leave hickies.” Heeseung states, crossing his arms.
“Then what exactly am I allowed to do?” Jungwon asks, his face scrunching in confusion.
“I’m allowing you to fuck her, that’s all you get.”
You laugh a little, taking the tie and lightly hitting it against Heeseung and he looks at you, his expression softening. He reaches a hand out to place on your cheek, caressing it with his thumb making Jungwon roll his eyes.
“Fine.” he says, making you and Heeseung turn back towards him. “As long as you’re okay with it, of course.” he says, becoming shy again as you make eye contact.
You smile sweetly and nod your head, “Anything for you.” you mouth to him causing him to smile and blush.
“Alright, let’s get this over with.” Heeseung says, clapping his hands together.
You stand up, Jungwon looking at you and following your lead. You stand close together, giving him a reassuring smile before taking the tie and gently draping it over his eyes, leaning in a little more to tie it in the back. He feels your breath dance along his skin, his dick starting to harden just by how close you are; just by how gentle you’re being. You finish putting on the blindfold, stepping back just a bit, Jungwon becoming a little saddened.
“I’ll be right over here.” Heeseung says more to you than to the both of you.
You nod your head and Jungwon tenses up.
“Do…you have to be in here?” he asks, not wanting to sound rude, but instantly becoming uncomfortable.
“Um, of course I do; I’m not letting anything unpermitted happen on my watch.”
You roll your eyes, “You don’t trust me?”
“I don’t trust him.” Heeseung says, nodding his head towards Jungwon.
Jungwon would roll his eyes if he could, but as of right now, he is just standing still while being filled with anticipation. He wishes he could see you instead of the darkness of his own closed eyelids; he wishes he could look into your eyes and see you smile at him, that would surely make him calm down.
“It’ll be okay, I’ll take good care of you.” you whisper while putting your hands on his shoulders, making him flinch a little from the unexpected contact.
He nods his head, hesitantly, essentially giving you your permission to move forward. You move your hands from his shoulders, gliding them along his chest to the hem of his shirt. He inhales a shaky breath, ears becoming red. Your fingers grip the edge of his shirt, lifting it up slightly, making him raise his arms–slowly–as you carefully take off his shirt, exposing his upper body. If he could see you, he would lose his mind over the fact that your eyes are delicately grazing over his partially exposed figure as you take off his shirt.
You toss his shirt to the side, all three of you able to hear the fabric hit the hardwood floor of his bedroom from how painstakingly quiet it is in the room. “Is it okay if I kiss your neck?” you ask, breaking the silence, but still in a quiet tone.
Jungwon doesn’t know how to answer; he doesn’t know if he can answer. With your hands lightly running along his chest, a trail of goosebumps being left behind wherever your fingers lightly touch his skin, he can’t seem to form a coherent thought, let alone a grammatically correct sentence to answer you back. He raises his shaking hands and places them on your waist, pulling you into his bare chest.
“No touching.” Heeseung chimes in.
Jungwon groans and removes his hands.
“What exactly do you want me to do?” Jungwon asks.
“You can only touch her if she lets you.” Heeseung says.
“Jeez, you sound like you’re my pimp.” you comment, a little annoyed.
Heeseung bites his tongue, picking up on your tone. You focus back on Jungwon, taking his hands and putting them back on your hips. He feels a small smile tug at his lips as he lowers his head to “look at you”. One of your hands is placed on the side of his neck and the other runs along his arm as you start to leave light kisses along the side of his cheek, gently pressing your lips back onto his soft skin as you make your way down to the side of his neck, starting to run your tongue a little on the spots that you kiss, his grip tightening on your waist.
Jungwon holds his breath, thinking that if he even took one breath, he would somehow miss the feeling of your lips on his skin; he wants to savor this as much as he can. You look back up at him and chuckle, “You can relax a little.” you whisper into his ear. He feels shivers cascade along his spine and he nods his head, swallowing a bit harshly. He feels you pull away from him and he almost lets out a whine, his lips forming a small pout. You coo at his expression and he is dying to see the way you are looking at him.
You move his hands a little slightly to the hem of your dress, and although he can’t see you, you look up at him through your eyelashes. “Do you want to take my clothes off for me?” you ask in a (very close to) pornographic tone.
Heeseung adjusts himself in his seat, becoming turned on a little from the way you are speaking.
“Yes.” Jungwon manages to say through a choked breath.
He feels his face heat up and you smile, letting go of his hands. For a second, he thinks that that means you don’t want him to, but quickly realizes you are letting him do it on his own. He lifts your dress, sometimes extending his fingers so he can feel the edge of your body as they run along it. He gulps, successfully slipping the dress off of you, biting his bottom lip as he tries to imagine what you’re wearing underneath; it’s practically driving him crazy that he can’t see you.
Heeseung, on the other hand, was enjoying the view completely. He smiles proudly at the fact you’re wearing a set he bought especially for you and he is still the only person who gets to see you in it. He continues to gawk at you as you take Jungwon’s hands and move them back onto your body, lightly running them up from your hips, past your stomach, all the way to placing his palms on your breasts. This is enough for Jungwon to get a boner, his cock beginning to ache in his pants.
He feels the material, making you bite your lip as you try not to moan. His fingers run across the lace with a sense of urgency and desperation, him wondering what color it is, whether or not you can see your nipples through the material, how exactly the bra cups your breasts. You let him squeeze them lightly, you let out a stifled breath, almost making him kiss you right then and there. The realization of what is happening starts to settle within him as he reaches to the back of the bra, but he stops. You raise an eyebrow at him, your face feeling a little hot from him fondling your covered breasts, becoming a little turned on from how excited he looks as he touches you.
“Can you give me a boobjob?” he asks, only really wanting you to hear.
“Of course.” you reply, his cock twitching in his pants from your tone.
Heeseung practically gives himself a headache from just how hard he rolled his eyes from Jungwon’s question. He watches as you reach to undo Jungwon’s belt and pants.
“He’s a big boy, let him do it himself.” he comments.
You turn and smile at your boyfriend and he winks at you, mouthing “You’re so hot” and you  wink at him. Jungwon smirks at the comment, mentally thinking about how he’s going to prove just that, taking off his pants and boxers, kicking them off to the side as he finally lets his cock free. You look back at him, a little surprised by how big he is, his cock leaking with precum as a bit of it spreads onto his abdomen. Your mouth falls a little agape and Heeseung rolls his eyes harshly once more.
“Get on the bed, big boy.” you encourage Jungwon–partially mocking Heeseung–and he smiles proudly at your request and pet name.
“Don’t call him that.” Heeseung mumbles.
Jungwon lays back, his headboard supporting him in sitting upright as he patiently waits for whatever you have planned next. He feels and hears the bed move as you get on, spreading his legs a bit so you can sit in between. Your hand travels slowly from along his thigh to his balls as you begin to fondle them. He grips the sheets in his hands, letting out a shaky moan. You smile, taking the same hand and now gripping the base of his cock. He inhales deeply as you move your hand up to the tip, your thumb spreading his precum along the top.
He rests his head against his headboard as he shuts his eyes tighter. You lean down, spitting a little onto the tip of his cock, using your hand to spread the mixture of your saliva and his precum all along his shaft. Jungwon clenches his jaw as he tries his best not to cum just yet and you release your grip, taking your boobs, squeezing them a bit more together in your bra, before sliding his cock through your cleavage.
“Holy sh-” he starts, but is cut off by his own moans.
You kiss his tip before squeezing your boobs a little more around his shaft, just to watch him squirm. Your pace starts slow, earning quiet little whines and moans from him.
“You’re such a good boy, Jungwon; you’re doing so well.” you praise and he whines.
“Please, please go faster.” he begs, not caring how he looks or how he sounds.
You let out a sympathetic hum, “Anything for the birthday boy.”
You pick up your pace, occasionally squeezing your boobs together a little more and Jungwon grips the sheets tighter than before, fingertips turning red and he knuckles turning white. He lets out pathetic moans, so badly wanting to see your boobs surrounding his cock. He bucks his hips up a little as he feels a pit in his lower stomach start to form. He calls out your name, bucking his hips up a little more, his tip hitting your chin.
“Jungwon.” you warn, him stopping as he calls out your name again, spurts of his cum landing on the bottom half of your face, your neck, all along your chest and bra.
Heeseung grimaces at the sight of another man’s cum on his girlfriend’s undergarments–one’s that he bought–but Jungwon was relishing in it. He catches his breath as he settles down and you pull his cock out from your breasts. He releases his grip from his sheets, his fingers feeling tense and sore, but before he has the chance to do anything, he feels your hand around his cock again. He whines at your touch, feeling a little sensitive, but you use his cock and wipe it along your chest, neck, and the bottom of your face, transferring his cum onto it.
“What-what are you do-” he is about to question, but then he feels you put his cock in your mouth and he closes his mouth instantly, his fingers gripping the sheets again.
You laugh a little, making him let out a moan as he slides down a bit as if that will make him feel you more. You take in as much of him as you can, some of his cum and your saliva dripping down your chin as you suck, swirling and gliding your tongue anywhere and everywhere you can. His hands make their way from his sheets to your hair, wrapping his fingers in it as he tries to touch you in some way. He moans a little louder than before, a little overstimulated, but he doesn’t want you to stop. He calls out your name once more before pushing your head a little further down as he cums.
You swallow what you can, but you take him out of your mouth, cum all along your lips and chin as a little more leaks from his tip. Heeseung gets up as you wipe the corners of your eyes, tears sprouting because you were gagging on Jugwon’s dick. He takes a tissue from Jungwon’s desk and uses it to wipe your mouth before handing you another one, so you can clean the cum from Jungwon’s dick. You catch on, taking the tissue to wipe the excess cum and he moans at your touch.
“Don’t pull that shit again.” Heeseung warns, turning back to you, “Are you okay?” he asks, his tone soft as his thumb runs along your bottom lip. As annoyed as he is, he can’t help but think about how hot you look in this state.
“I’m okay.” you say, your voice a little croaked.
“Did I hurt you?” Jungwon asks, genuinely concerned, “I’m so sorry.” he begins to apologize, embarrassment shooting throughout his whole body.
“Jungwon, calm down, I’m okay.” you reassure him. Heeseung pulls back, going back to his seat, knowing full and well you are capable of taking care of yourself. You take off your bra, it feeling a bit sticky, casting it to the side along with your underwear. Now, fully undressed, you extend your hand out to Heeseung. He raises an eyebrow, making you shake your hand a bit. He realizes what you mean and sits up a little to grab his wallet out of his back pocket, retrieving a condom, handing it to you. You take it, open it, and then put it on Jungwon. Heeseung takes the wrapper from you, going to throw it away as you position yourself over Jungwon, taking his cock once again in your hand. “Are you okay?” you ask, “Do you want to continue?”
He nods his head a little too quickly and drags his hands along your thighs to your hips, somewhat urging you to ride him already. You smile at his eagerness and position him before sinking down onto his cock. You go slow, getting used to how he stretches you out as Jungwon’s mouth falls agape, stifled breaths coming from him, his head falling back. He grips your hips tightly, sure to leave bruises tomorrow.
Once you're fully settled, you wince a little and move your hips slightly. Jungwon gasps, but bites his tongue. You sit there for a second, taking his hands from your hips, his grip loosening for you to do so, guiding them along your body, resting his hands on your breasts. Jungwon feels them for a second and realizes that you are no longer wearing your bra. He squeezes them in amazement, running his thumbs across your erect nipples, biting his bottom lip so hard that he thinks it might start to bleed.
“Can I suck on them?” he begs.
You pout at his cuteness and run your thumbs along his cheeks. Heeseung covers his mouth, trying to suppress his laugh and you look over to glare at him, knowing full well he acts like this occasionally. Heeseung sits back up straight, still trying not to laugh, but trying to regain his composure. You turn back to Jungwon, letting go of his face.
“Of course.” you say. He doesn’t waste a second, moving his hands back to your sides, sitting forward and you use one of your hands to guide his head to one of your breasts. He opens his mouth, his breath tickling you, before he latches his mouth around your nipple. “Good boy.” you praise, earning yet another eye roll from Heeseung; he’s your good boy, not Jungwon, but whatever. Jungwon gains more confidence in your praise, his hands now on the small of your back as he pushes you more into his mouth, continuing to suck and swirl his tongue on your nipple. You moan a little, making Jungwon moan as he tries not to cum so quickly.
Heeseung groans, becoming a little impatient. You take the hint, rubbing Jungwon’s back, signaling him to finish up. Jungwon releases, a string of saliva connecting between his bottom lip and your nipple, him trying to catch his breath quietly. You scratch the back of his neck, smiling and Jungwon bites his bottom lip. You stop him, cleaning up the saliva from his lip with your thumb. Jungwon wants to kiss you so badly currently, he feels so frustrated. He opens his mouth to speak but you start rocking your hips and he loses all train of thought.
You pick up your pace, pleasure beginning to course throughout your body as you use his dick to get yourself off. You start to moan, your head falling a bit back and Jungwon goes back to gripping your hips, moving you faster. You feel warm and the way your pussy occasionally clenches around his dick causes his whole body to feel like jelly; you hold such power over him. He wants you to call out his name so badly, but he knows you won’t. You lean down into him, leaving some kisses on his neck, your moans so clear for him to hear and he calls out your name repeatedly.
He doesn’t want to cum before you, but he feels the same feeling in his lower stomach start to form again and he can’t hold himself back much longer. He wishes he wasn’t wearing a condom and that he could fill you up with his cum, that he could watch it leak out of you, that he could feel your walls clench around him more clearly, that he can watch you as you bounce up and down on his cock, your boobs bouncing with you. All of these thoughts bring him closer to his orgasm along with you still kissing his neck and moaning in his ear.
“Please, please.” he pleads, whining as tears begin to soak the tie, some escaping from the fabric and rolling down his cheeks.
You pull back, wiping his tears for him, “Cum for me, Jungwon.” you say.
You said his name. Fuck, you said his name as you’re riding his cock. He moans your name, bucking his hips up a little into you, his thighs slapping against your thighs and ass, his dick going further into you and you moan louder than before as you feel the condom become warm with his cum. You cum shortly after, throwing your head back as you rock your hips faster, riding out your high and Jungwon helps you, guiding your hips as you’d like, loving the warm feeling of your cum sliding down his cock.
His hands fall to his sides and you catch your breath a little before getting off of him. Heeseung gets up and helps you off of the bed, pulling you into a deep kiss, whispering in your ear, “You look so pretty, darling.” before placing a quick kiss on your lips.
You smile and playfully hit his shoulder before grabbing your clothes to go clean yourself up. Jungwon calms down, sitting up, feeling overwhelmed with tiredness and pleasure. You return shortly, a glass of water in your hand. You walk over to Jungwon, “You can take off the blindfold now.” prompting him to do just that, his eyes squinting as they adjust to the light. You hand him the glass and he smiles, thanking you, before practically chugging the whole thing.
“Okay, you can put some clothes on, now.” Heeseung urges, taking the glass from Jungwon once he is done.
“Right, sorry.” he says, realizing he is still naked.
Heeseung turns you around as Jungwon gets up to go get cleaned up and dressed, making you laugh. Jungwon chuckles, trying to ease his shaking legs, looking at Heeseung.
“I think we’re past that.” he jokes.
Heeseung scoffs and playfully hits Jungwon’s shoulder.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Happy Birthday, Jungwon.” he replies sarcastically.

what started in beautiful rooms, ends with meetings in parking lots and that's the thing about illicit affairs, and clandestine meetings and longing stares; It's born from just one single glance but it dies, and it dies, and it dies — a million little times.
"jungwon, let's not do this—"
"it's over, i'm sorry"
it's over & he's sorry. if only he cared to explain what we were in the first place.
let's rewind?
yang jungwon was the most perfect "boyfriend". only if he was your boyfriend. he got you flowers, he took care of you, but he wasn't your boyfriend — if you could turn back time, you would never agree to be in a "no-label" relationship, because oh boy, does it hurt.
the relationship existed in a perpetual state of limbo, neither fully committed nor entirely detached. you two clung to each other out of loneliness and desperation, your hearts yearning for something more, yet unable to break free from the suffocating grip of their situation.
you loved him. your desire for jungwon's love and affection was strong, like an endless thirst in the desert of your soul. you ached for his presence, touch, and reassuring whispers. you sought the stability and security that had always evaded you in him, believing that he would fill the emptiness in your heart. but he didn't, he made that empty gap bigger.
however, jungwon was just a man plagued by his own demons, haunted by the ghosts of his past. his heart was a fortress, walled by walls of dread and uncertainty, unable to truly embrace your love. he wanted, needed intimacy but resisted it, scared of the vulnerability & commitment it required.
a girl who loves hard and a guy who doesn't understand what to do with that love — a recipe for disaster. commitment was a daunting prospect, for jungwon atleast, it was like a leap into the unknown that threatened to unravel the fragile threads of his very own existence, something he didn't understand himself. he struggled to let go of the past, to trust in the promise of a future with you, even as you stood before him, offering your heart on a silver plate for him.
"why can't you just be honest with me?" you pleaded, your voice trembling with emotion.
jungwon's eyes narrowed, a coldness creeping into his voice. "honesty won't change anything," he retorted, his words laced with bitterness. "you're too naive to understand the truth."
tears welled up in your eyes as you reached out to him, your hand trembling. "I don't care, wonie," you pleaded, your voice choked with emotion. "I just want to be with you, no matter what."
jungwon pulled away from you, his heart heavy with guilt. "I wish it were that simple," he confessed, his voice barely a whisper. "but I can't promise you anything, not when I can barely hold myself together."
each word felt like a blow to your already bruised heart, your chest tightening with the weight of his indifference. "I thought you loved me," you whispered, your voice barely audible above the din of your crumbling relationship.
your heart shattered into a million irreparable pieces, realizing that the man you once loved had become nothing more than a cruel stranger. you couldn't help but wonder if you had ever truly known jungwon at all.
"jungwon, let's not do this—"
"it's over, i'm sorry"
it's over & he's sorry.
where's the rewind button?

- at first every thing is soooo platonic. going out to lunch, studying together, going bike riding, everything as friends until one day you get tired of him not understanding the multitude of hints you're throwing at him. so, you end up confessing.
- to be honest he's a little confused at first, because how could he miss the fact that you liked him ?? especially all this time?? luckily, he didn't have to think about it much and told you he'd be your boyfriend right then and there. he didn't see too much of a difference from what you guys were doing before. but now he had kissing privileges.
- you guys are almost always on facetime with eachother, like almost everyday talking for hours. sometimes you both fall asleep while in the phone and other times he ends the call with a loud kissy noise to let you know he loves you.
- jungwon is someone who likes to take interest in things you like or enjoy. if it's a show he'd watch it, book, he'd read it, or game he'd play it just so he's able to relate to you and spend time with you doing something you enjoy doing.
- his love languages are so clear, he cant help but express them. they cone to him naturally like, acts of service, quality time, and physical touch.
- when he's away on tour you guys are almost always on facetime. before bed he needs to hear your voice regardless of the timezone. most times you guys both fall asleep on the phone and have facetime calls that last anywhere from 5 minutes to 16 hours.
- without thinking he shares his food with you. most times he's mindlessly talking or scrolling through his phone as he offers you a bite of his food from his chopsticks.
- jungwon listens to any and all issues and concerns you may have in that pretty little brain of yours. sometimes he asks you if you want advice, solutions, or just someone to listen regardless of what he thinks.
- sometimes when he's in a playful mood he'd hide your things, that he knows you need. like a straw to a reuseable cup, your computer mouse, your favorite mug, maybe even a shoe. he does it just to see how long it would take you to notice he had it. plus watching you freak out and look for your lost item made him laugh.
- he likes to pretend to trip you. he purposely sticks his foot out only to move it away at the last second. sometimes he does actually trip youto which he laughs and helps you up.
- jealousy is his middle name. regardless of who you're attracted to he's always tentative and reading body language around you. he's not worried about you, he's worried about others getting too friendly with you, but he'd never tell you that.
- if you get sick he'd playfully scold you and make sure you have what you need to get better. like meds, soup, water. he's not exactly sure how to take care of you but, the best he can do is make sure you're taking your meds on time and drinking water.
- he remembers ever little detail you've shared about yourself with him. he plays coy most of the time, but when you have specific orders for foods or drinks he some how always brings you things exactly as you ask for it.
- if you dig deep into his phone you'll find the note he made on his notes app when you guys first started dating with all the things you like and all the things you dont and maybe even your usual fast food orders.
- jungwon's your biggest fan. number 1 supporter. he would cheer for you even if no one else is. he loves you so much everything you do is golden in his eyes.
- with that, jungwon loves seeing you supporting him. you guys are so supportive of eachother. he feels like seeing you the audience energizes him because he wants you to be proud and have something to brag about.
- saying "i love you" came so natural to him. he probably said it one night about 3 months into your relationship. it was kinda shocking and honestly even took him by suprise. but it was just so easy.
- your phone is always being blown up with his texts. he sends you everything and anything. he loves texting you. good morning texts, good night texts, bored daily selfies. you get it all.
- his phone is full of pictures of you, most of them off guard or blurry. and everytime you see them you tell him to delete it because you think you look bad. but he thinks theres no bad pictures of you.
- jungwon's the type to look over at your over your shoulder at your phone. not because he doesn't trust you, but usually because his eyes just happen to land there if you guys are together. to be annoying he sometimes taps the screen to mess what ever you're doing up and get your attention.
- without you having to ask, jungwon brings you your favorite snacks everytime you both hang out. he just always brings things, and they all happen to be your favorites.
- if you're looking for something under a table or cabinet he puts a hand over the edge so you don't hit your head against the hard surface while getting up.
- he loves nights where you both can just chill out and watch movies. you guys obligatory monthly movie marathon nights with popcorn and candy.
- jungwon is always planning dates. he loves coming up with fun and creative ways to spend time together so its not all repetitive and expected.
- to make sure he has time with you, he designates a day in the week for it to be date night. something like every thursday. if he's on tour on your date night we would take time out of his day to have a virtual date playing video games or watching a movie together online while still on facetime.
- arguments with jungwon are very rare. he's usually so understanding and tends to see your side in conversations. he also articulates and expresses his feelings really well when he feels like he must.
- obviously he would never admit it, but jungwon lives to see you in his clothes. infact, you both trade and share clothes often and he lives for it.
- he rests his head on yours all the time. it's always iust you and him. cheek to cheek. its a simple act of affection.
- you always try to poke his dimple everytime it pops out and he has successfully turned his head fast enough to bite your finger before you could.
- skinship is something you get a lot of with him. especially in private. sometimes it's usual sweet things like kisses and cuddles and other times it's him playfully tackling you onto the couch. its almost like he's glued to you.
- sometimes he shows you tiktok trends couples are doing all over his fyp and begs you to make a tiktok with him because it would be cute. he can't help but post it and make everyone jealous about your relationship.
- you guys have a shared playlist on a music app that allows you both to just dump songs into it. you guys listen to the playlist when you hang out all the time. some songs are ones he likes, others you like, and some you both love. at this point the playlist has over 200 songs you both just love listening to.
- he tries to be crafty and cute for you. key word is tries. he wants to make you sweet handmade cards or a mug in a pottery class. they're not terrible and you obviously keep each thing he hand makes you. he knows you love him if you're keeping the lopsided hello kitty mug he painted for you.
- you hardly ever need to verbally tell him you need something because he observes and knows when you run low of things you use daily and just buys you things like that. your favorite perfume is low? he got you a new one. your fabric softener is out? he got you more. he ate the last bowl of clyour favorite cereal? he's replacing it with a whole new box.
- expect him to keep every little thing you give or gift him. you see the little stickers you give him on the back of his phone or on his laptop, the scrunchies you leave at his house are around his wrist incase either of you needs them, and the weird little blind bag figures you get him are neatly placed on his desk for him to see everyday.
- he usually calls you by your name because part of him thinks pet names are cringe. if he's feeling funny he'll probably call you something like "booger" or "bun head" out of love.
- for some reason valentine's day means a lot to him, so he goes full on out every year and thinks on ways to out do himself in the next year.
- loves stay at home dates where you both just enjoy eachother's company. maybe do a facemask, maybe cook some ramen, and maybe you sleep over. it's just perfect.
- overall, jungwon is such a sweet, caring and orotective boyfriend. i think he's the most boyfriend material out of the whole group!

I. 30 days before d-day
Yang Jungwon would like to think his meticulous 15-step plan for your birthday was going perfectly.
Despite still having a month until the celebration, he had prided himself in his preparations. A surprise birthday party should always be in order for his person where he can quietly hide his feelings, yet show them at the same time – through platonically giving you a bouquet of your favorite flowers, and writing a lengthy letter on how much you mean to him as a friend.
It is your birthday anyway, and he thinks you need to be reminded everyday of how loved you are. Nevermind if his love has seeped past the boundaries between platonic and romantic. You didn’t need to know that.
So, with 14 steps down his plan, he’d like to think it was going perfectly.
He has gone back to the venue thrice the past month to double check if his reservations went through, he has made sure to tell all your friends to free their schedule for your celebration, he has ordered your favorite cake with the exact proportion of icing and cake (just how you liked it) — just step after step to make sure you had an unforgettable birthday.
Yang Jungwon would go through all the trouble again and again to make sure you’re happily fixed in a golden daze on your special day, and maybe for the rest of the days after that too.
But something was bothering Jungwon, almost like an itch he couldn’t scratch. An itch that had spread through his whole body, and he didn’t think any form of medicine could ever remedy him. It had started out as a small bother and grew into an overwhelming rash.
He has the “15th step” to thank for that. Your birthday present.
It was never easy shopping for you. Even during Christmas, you would happily tell him you didn’t really want anything. You were very much satisfied with your life right now, with the friends you had, and you wanted nothing more than to create memories forever captured in the lense of your cameras and engraved in your memories to look back on when you were older.
While it was a sweet answer, Jungwon was not having it.
He’s been discreetly trying to get an answer from you for months to no avail. All he ever gets from you is a laugh, and an annoying “guess!”. But, he knows there’s something you want. Deep down and hidden behind your sweet laughter was something he knew you’ve been wanting for a while.
Yang Jungwon prides himself in knowing you like the back of his hand. With each other, there’s an absence of needing to pretend because you know you understand each other very well. He knows you as if you’re a reflection of himself. He has drunk up your movements enough to know how you feel with a single flick of emotion.
When your legs start to bounce a little, he knows you’re feeling a little nervous. When he finds you chewing on your bottom lip, he knows you’re deep in thought.
So, when he asks you what the best present to you would look like, he doesn’t miss the glint in your eyes.
You know exactly what you want, and Jungwon doesn’t understand why you won’t just tell him.
“Hyung, I know there’s something she wants. You don’t understand!” Jungwon is whining about you again. Jay is no longer bothered. He has learned long ago that being friends with him came with the consequence of him never shutting up about you.
It was funny how Jay practically knew everything about you before even meeting you. Your favorite color, what your go-to-drink was at cafe’s, your favorite fast food chain, even little mannerisms like how you curl your lips when you concentrate enough. Jungwon unknowingly slips pieces of information about you in everything that he does.
Jay buys him Mcdonalds? Best believe he’s sharing about the time you had both gotten a happy meal the night of his birthday a few years ago. Jake brings over Layla? Jungwon’s talking about Maeumi’s particular soft spot for you.
Jay’s eyes twinkle with amusement. Perhaps Jungwon is unknowingly falling deeper and deeper in love with you – Jay only hopes you’ll be there to catch him when he eventually feels the pressure of the fall.
“Hyung, are you there?” Jungwon’s eyes are fixed on his as he tugs gently on Jay’s sleeve, almost mirroring the mannerisms of a child when they want to get someone’s attention.
Although, Jay thinks he’s partially to blame as he did allow his mind to wander off while they were walking along the crowded halls of the mall.
“I’m listening. I don’t get why you’re so worried? Just get what she wants then.”
Jungwon’s boba eyes squint as he glares at the boy he had dragged along with him. Jay just doesn’t get it! However, he doesn’t have it in his heart to get upset with the boy. Jay had willingly accompanied him to the mall despite the crowd of people.
Jungwon knows Jay isn’t fond of overcrowded places.
The mall is packed with people — officer workers, street vendors, the poor and the rich. A variety of people walk through the limited space, pushing past one another to get to where they want. Jungwon’s convinced he would’ve gotten lost without his companion.
“How am I supposed to get it if I don’t know what it is?” He’s pouting now, and Jay resists the urge to pinch his cheeks.
Perhaps Jay should’ve expected this the moment he had volunteered to go to the mall with Jungwon, but he didn’t mind. Even if he had expected it, he would’ve still accompanied the young boy..
“There’s still a month left before her birthday. You have all the time in the world.” Jungwon feels a pat on his head as he’s frantically scanning around the mall for anything you might like.
“A month means I’m running out of time.”
Jay laughs, choosing to stay quiet. He prompts to keep Jungwon close, wrapping an arm around his shoulder to make sure he doesn’t lose him in the crowd.
Jungwon tends to get lost in his thoughts, and in turn, get easily distracted in public spaces.
Old people and children were pushing their trolleys of groceries left and right. If you didn’t pay attention to where you were going, Jay was convinced you’d fall victim to the wheels of the grocery carts or accidentally bump into someone and tip their shopping bags over.
When Jay drives Jungwon home empty-handed, he tells Jungwon there’s always tomorrow, and the day after that. There was still time to figure out what you wanted.
Still, Jungwon doesn’t get an ounce of sleep that night.

II. 15 days before d-day
Six in the morning is too early.
Jungwon doesn’t understand why classes start as early as seven — he’d have to wake up at five or six, prepare breakfast for himself, get changed and look presentable, and pack his backpack.
There was too much to do crammed into an hour.
He isn’t sure how he isn’t used to getting up even earlier when training for competitions. Then again, he truly believes six in the morning is just too early.
Yet, despite his disdain for the early hours of the morning, Jungwon never fails to get coffee. Even more than that, he never fails to show up at your doorstep to walk you to school either.
None of his friends tell him he doesn’t need to get up so early in the morning if he chose not to walk you to school every morning. Something tells them Jungwon already knows this. He’s a smart boy, and they know his constant habit of walking you to school every morning is to make sure you’re safe – because he cares a lot about you.
Six in the morning is never too early to see you.
“One cold brew.” He politely tells the barista, reaching out for his wallet in his book bag. “And a matcha latte, please.”
“Would you like anything else?”
Jungwon looks up from his bag, unzipping his purse as he scans over the menu and the specials for the day. And then his eyes widen.
With a smile on his face, he adds, “A slice of strawberry shortcake please.”
Your face flashes in his mind, and he vaguely recalls you’d texted him a few days ago mentioning that you were craving the strawberry shortcake his grandmother makes whenever you came over.
However, because it wasn’t harvest season yet, his grandma couldn’t make another as of recent which prompted you to randomly text him about how you had missed his grandmother’s baking. He thinks spending a little extra this morning is worth it in exchange for the look on your face when you see what he got you. While it isn’t his grandmother’s, he knows you’d still greatly appreciate it.
And Jungwon is absolutely right.
When you catch sight of the familiar box from the bakery you frequent, Jungwon notices the smile on your face right away — trying to capture it long enough for him to remember and look back on for the rest of the day.
“Jungwon, you didn’t have to.” You flick his forehead before wrapping your arms around him in a short hug. Jungwon bites back a very obvious smile as he returns the hug.
“But I wanted to.”
He doesn’t know when his heart started beating a little faster every time you pulled him into a hug. One moment, it was a completely normal thing. The next, he couldn’t stop thinking about the short display of affection for the rest of the day.
Somewhere along the lines, Jungwon had fallen in love in the silence between best friends.
Maybe he had realized just how much he’d fallen when he realized he could do nothing next to you forever and he’d still want that – he’d still greatly appreciate just being around you.
The silence of falling in love expands as you share the slice of cake on the way to school. Jungwon snorts at the sight of icing carelessly gracing your cheeks and your nose — though it's fond in a way only you can bring out of him.
So cute, he thinks.
He knows six in the morning is too early for cake, but it wasn’t too early to see the smile on your face as you're blissfully unaware of the mess you had left on your face.
Jungwon’s lip twitches at the sight.
He doesn’t really give you a chance before he’s taking the spare tissues the guy behind the counter had given him and wiping the icing so carefully on your face.
You’re taken aback by the sudden gesture, halting in your steps as Jungwon places a hand on your shoulder to steady you and make sure there won’t be traces of icing on your face when you reach school.
When he’s done, he simply places the tissue back in the plastic bag and carries on walking. You, on the other hand, turn a bright, embarrassing red. Jungwon had been at such a close proximity without warning, and while innocent, it seemed strangely intimate.
You brush the thought at the back of your head before racing after him so you aren’t left behind.
Silence greets the both of you as you comfortably walk side by side. Jungwon shifts his weight a little bit, enough that your hands brush while walking.
“Sooo…” Jungwon starts.
“Sooo…” You continue, looking at him funny.
“What do you want for your birthday?” You laugh at his question, having heard it too many times the past month. You had already known the direction of the conversation the moment Jungwon decided to say something.
In truth, you didn’t really want anything materialistic and you’ve already told him this. You don’t know why he refuses to believe you. There wasn’t much you really wanted. So long as you get to spend your birthday with him, even in silence, you’d think that would be the best present he could give you.
You laugh at the thought that he might’ve bought you cake as a bribery tactic to finally get you to say what you wanted for your birthday. You don’t know why it’s such a big deal to your best friend.
“Is this why you bought me cake? Jungwon, I already told you I don’t want anything in particular.” You say through a laugh, bumping your shoulder with his as you take the steps up to your school’s entrance. He pouts, nudging you back while mumbling, “you’re such a liar.”
Guessing your heart was so much harder than an exam, that Jungwon can conclude as he walks to his first class after dropping you to your classroom.
With an exam, you have all the time and resources to study. And there was so much material to learn from. Guessing your heart, on the other hand, was a little more complex. While Jungwon generally knows what your heart feels like, it’s still difficult to know what it truly wants.
He spends the rest of his free time pondering over your birthday gift, phone in hand and your feed on his timeline.

III. 7 days before d-day
You didn’t mean to fall asleep on Yang Jungwon’s shoulder, with your cheek against his shoulder and your hands gripping on his sweater. It was honestly meant to be just a quick little rest after staying up all night doing Chemistry homework, so you wouldn’t fall asleep in class later on.
What stems from a lean on his shoulder results in a nap.
Jungwon makes an effort not to move too much as he makes the homework given to him prior in advance. While it was due next week, Jungwon finds that there’s free time during his lunch break to start working on it as early as now.
Although it’s a little hard to focus when your fluttering eyelashes and parted mouth is directly in his peripheral vision. Jungwon would like to believe he controls himself well – he’s mastered the art of being meticulously planned. If he could, he would’ve mapped out the rest of his life already.
He’s a little untrusting of fate, and he didn’t like the uncertainty of not knowing. So, he makes sure everything he does is in his control, whether that’s the homework due next week or his responsibilities as class president.
Jungwon didn’t see you coming though.
Your soft breathing sends him into a frenzy, and he struggles to keep on writing down ideas on his essay despite his mind being clouded by the feeling of your hands wrapped around his arm and your head drooping on his shoulder.
He doesn’t think much work can be done when he sees his friends make their way over the pair of you with smirking faces and knowing looks. Nishimura Riki is the first to nudge him teasingly, motioning over to you before giggling to himself.
“You’re so whipped, hyung.”
Instead of replying to him, Jungwon pressed a finger to his lips before running a hand down your back to make sure you hadn’t awakened from the sudden ruckus.
He knows how much you worked on your homework last night. He had been there on video call, ready to tend to any of your questions. He had also been there to convince you to sleep already, and that he would help you on the way to school the next day.
“You’re so whipped, hyung.” Riki repeats in a whisper, laughing as Jungwon moves him aside with his foot. He messily places his books on the table before pulling out the lunch box his mother had prepared for him.
“How long has she been sleeping for?” Jake slides in the seat across Jungwon, asking curiously while being careful not to raise his voice so you could continue your soundless nap. Unlike Riki, Jake neatly stacks his notebooks aside on the table.
“Just around 15 minutes now.” Jake hums in acknowledgment, smiling at the sight of Jungwon’s flushed cheeks as he constantly checks to see if you’re still comfortable in your position.
“What are you so focused on?” Slipping beside Jungwon, Jay peeks at the notebook plastered on the cafeteria table.
“My essay.” He spots the essay Jungwon’s been working on, yet a knowing smirk creeps up on his face when he sees the other page of Jungwon’s notebook. “You sure about that?”
Jay gestures towards the messily written list, and Jungwon turns a bright red upon being caught. “Okay, maybe I wasn’t too focused.”
“What is it?” Sunoo butts in the conversation, taking a bite of his sandwich before leaning over to see what all the commotion was about.
“(Name)’s possible wishlist.” Jungwon mumbles, looking over his list.
A useful something — a new watch perhaps? He knows yours doesn’t work anymore and you’re just wearing it because you’d gotten used to the feeling of the watch around your wrist. Or maybe pretty trash? You’ve mentioned multiple times that you wanted to buy a fake plant to decorate your room with.
“How about something romantic?” Heeseung peers over to make sure you’re still asleep before asking the question. “Some flowers?”
“He’s already going to get her flowers. Jungwon doesn’t count that as a gift.” Sunghoon responds for Jungwon, stealing a bite off of Sunoo’s sandwich earning him a smack on the shoulder.
“Hey, what happened to respecting your seniors?” Sunghoon pouts, rubbing his shoulder. Sunoo is unbothered as he steals his sandwich back. “I’m special.” Sunoo replies sweetly, finishing up his lunch.
“I really can’t make a guess. What could be the best present?” Jungwon mumbles more to himself, brushing a hand over your hair absentmindedly.
He looks down at you and he smiles at how cute you look with your cheek pressed against his shoulder. His friends notice this — he’s looking at you that way again, that same adoring way Jungwon thinks he’s hidden quite well.
He looks back at his list, crossing out the things he had written earlier. While going through them, everything suddenly forms a meaning.
The neck pillow reminds him of times like these, when you’d fall asleep on him in school or on the way back home when you’d decide to take the bus instead of walking. He’s reminded of times when he’d have to shake you awake as you’d arrive at your doorstep because you’d fall asleep even on the short walk from the bus stop to your home.
Jungwon made sure to always help you out though, and you’d gratefully smile up at him and squish his cheeks in thanks before stepping into your home.
The hoodie reminds him of all the times you’d steal his. He doesn’t even act surprised when he’s picking you up one day and you’re clad in what used to be his favorite hoodie. He knows you won’t even wear the hoodie he’d get you, prompting to keep stealing his because freshly bought hoodies just don’t smell the same.
The bracelet reminds him of the ones you’re wearing right now. Although a little messy and mismatched, you had both made them when you were a little younger — friendship bracelets. He remembers designing yours with a little too much heart beads. At the time, he didn’t even know he had the biggest crush on you.
A jewel box with a star called you inside is overflowing in his heart. The yearning feels a little too overwhelming.
Jungwon feels like he’s just been thrown off a plane, freefalling with everything out of his control. The harsh winds feel like it can tear him apart, and the acceleration increases with every hoodie you steal and every moment you fall asleep on his shoulder. There’s a deafening silence as he falls.
“What were you guys talking about?” You peel your head from Jungwon’s shoulder, rubbing your eyes gently before dropping them down so your best friend doesn’t scold you. Then, you lean your head back on his shoulder.
Jungwon crashes.
“Good morning noona.” Riki changes the topic shamelessly, waving at you enthusiastically.
You’re too exhausted to respond as enthusiastically, so you prompt to wave back at him instead, sending a smile his way.
A reserved smile plays at Jungwon’s friends’ mouths, greeting you as they continue to eat their food. You aren’t necessarily from the same circle, but you’ve learned to bond with the boys in different ways.
Although shy at first, you’ve found various interests to talk to them about.
You always made an effort to get along with your best friend’s circle, and they reciprocated that. The way Jungwon beams at you so wholeheartedly is enough for them to know you’re good for Jungwon. Besides, you’d known him the longest and it didn’t really take much to know that all his gentle smiles have always been reserved for you.
With Heeseung and Jake, you talk about video games to the point where they’d invite you to game lobbies without having to ask Jungwon. They regard you as one of their friends.
With Sunghoon, you share the same love for ice skating. Sometimes you’d see each other at the local ice rink and spend the rest of the time skating side by side and talking about whatever came to mind. You’ve always been hesitant with Sunghoon since he was a little introverted like you. You didn’t know if he wanted you to strike up a conversation with him. Yet, when you were ice skating one day, and he decided to skate towards the direction you were in and guide you through the rink while joking around, you knew he didn’t mind being a friend.
Jay had become like an overbearing brother. Because you were so close to Jungwon, he had naturally grown a sense of overprotectiveness when it came to you. Maybe it had something to do with protecting Jungwon’s happiness, but somewhere along the way, you’d become like a little sister to him. You knew you could always confide in him.
Sunoo was the easiest to get along with. You’d talk gossip, on the latest shows and movies you were obsessed with, on practically everything. To the extent where Jungwon would joke around about how Sunoo was stealing his best friend from him.
Riki was the sweetest. He treated you as an older sister and always got on Jungwon’s nerves with your help. You’d come along with him as he’d set up pranks on his friends, and you’d listen to him blabber about how Heeseung and Jake would kick him out of lobbies because it was way past his bedtime.
Because you meant a lot to Jungwon, his friends naturally gravitated towards you. They’d become your friends too.
Truth be told, it wasn’t the most difficult thing falling into a friendship with the six boys. While branded as intimidating, they were actually really nice.
“You can go back to sleep. There’s still 30 minutes before the next class.” Jay smiles softly at you, apologizing if their ruckus might’ve shaken you awake which you dismissed immediately.
“Wait, before you head back to sleep…” Jungwon says, cupping your cheeks and looking down at you through your droopy eyes. You hum in response, waiting for what he has to say.
“What do you want for your birthday?”
The question elicits laughter from the table, including you. With a playful glare, you tear Jungwon’s hands from your cheeks before situating yourself back on his shoulder.
“You shouldn’t take advantage of a sleepy girl.” Jungwon laughs, resting an arm around your waist to make sure you’re comfortable, and so you don’t strain your neck.
“It was worth a try.”
There’s a gentle smile adorning Jungwon’s pretty face as he rests his head atop of yours. Jungwon recovers from the crash and is ready to jump again.
Tumblr media
IV. 1 day before d-day
Jungwon was going to go absolutely mad. It was inevitable, how he was going to go insane, the madness creeping slowly and slowly until it consumed the entirety of Yang Jungwon.
It was a day before your birthday, and while his 14 steps had been ready a month prior to tomorrow, he could not, for the life of him, get the fifteenth step down.
He thought 30 days was a good enough marker for him to have some time to get you the perfect present. He thought wrong as he scrambles through lists on end that he had previously written days.
Jungwon had already gone through it multiple times. He knows he won’t get anything new when he reviews it again, yet he still does it anyway. Jungwon has never known frustration quite like this.
Sure, he had crammed a few tests and homeworks before, but not like this. He had never been completely unprepared. He had never gone without a backup plan, a Plan B of sorts.
The stress over your birthday present has reared into a good first place of the list that was driving Jungwon straight into madness. Forget about the exams. He had studied for that long before it was even announced.
Heeseung raises an eyebrow at the sight before him. He had never seen Jungwon this out of control before with his eyes wide and his shoulders slouched over his notebook. “Still thinking about (name)’s birthday gift?”
Heeseung knows he’s right, and the blush on Jungwon’s cheeks is enough confirmation that you were yet again the reason as to why he had blown out of proportions and was panicking as he was going through your surprise birthday party with his and your friends.
There’s that sincere, loving look in his eyes that solidifies Heeseung’s question. Although Jungwon tries to appear composed and stoic, the visible panic in his voice while he reviews the plans for tomorrow was enough to blow his cover. Besides, you’re the only person that can make Jungwon go from calm to insane to flustered in the blink of an eye.
“You’re so in love.” Riki giggles as he wiggles his eyebrows at the older boy. He supposes he should’ve seen the shove coming.
“Jungwon, I’m sure this surprise birthday party is the greatest gift you could give her. Your time and effort into planning this just goes beyond. You don’t need to get her anything.” Everyone at the table hums at Jay’s insight.
While it was amusing seeing their friend on the brink of madness, it was still just a little bit concerning. Jungwon was always the one who had his shit together, and the uncharacteristic insanity was slowly creeping the boys out.
“I just really wanted to get her something.” Jungwon mumbles, staring down at his notebook before sighing out in defeat. He really wanted to get you what you wanted, but he just couldn’t figure it out. Since when did you get so hard to read?
“Maybe if you confessed to her instead.” Sunoo giggles at his idea as if it’s the most genius thing he’e ever said. It might just be.
While he meant it in a joking manner (everyone knew Jungwon was way too much of a coward to tell you how he feels, instead choosing to hide behind platonic gestures), Jungwon seriously considers it.
“As if Jungwon could actually do that.” Sunghoon looks at Sunoo incredulously, shaking his head. Sunghoon’s absolutely right and Jungwon knows it.
“Oy, hide your notebook. She’s coming this way.” Jake is quick to close the notebook that had all the details of your surprise birthday party, hiding it on the bench between him and Jungwon before waving at you innocently.
Before you can approach their table, someone calls out to you quietly. Your head whips at the sound, smiling politely at your classmate who greets you an advance happy birthday.
“Any idea on what you want for your special day?” Wonyoung smiles sweetly, hoping to hear a response.
She was planning on going to the mall after dismissal today so she could get you a gift before coming to your surprise birthday party tomorrow. Sullyoon had already gotten you a present days before, but had volunteered to come with Wonyoung anyway.
Jungwon hopes none of his friends notice the way his head whips so fast at the question.
If you won’t tell Jungwon, maybe you’d tell Wonyoung.
“Nothing comes to mind.” You laugh quietly and Wonyoung pouts at your lack of response. “Nothing?”
Guess Wonyoung has quite a challenge when she goes shopping later.
When you finish talking, Wonyoung politely excuses herself before waving you goodbye and walking off to the halls of the school.
You break out into a wide smile as you walk over to where Jungwon and his friends are. Jungwon returns the smile, cheeks burning red when your eyes fall to him. He doesn’t recall when art and beauty was capable of looking back at him.
He motions you over and pushes Riki (who was seated on the other side next to him) aside so you could sit next to him. Riki simply finds another seat across from the group.
Besides, no one could adore you in the way that Jungwon does. You don’t receive that kind of admiration from Jungwon so easily. And it’s only yours.
“Advance happy birthday.” Jungwon smiles up at you, pulling you down to sit next to him. “Thank you.” You hum sweetly before quietly thanking everyone around the table who had joined in on the greetings.
The group easily falls into banter, and your surprise birthday party is kept a secret from you for the rest of the day.
Jungwon walks you home that day, just like he always does. He admits with little shame that he was distracted the whole walk home.
You’d have to pull him back so he doesn’t walk directly into a streetlight.
He’s incredibly busy thinking about tomorrow, how the day just had to be perfect. And it’s even harder to focus when the golden light of the sun was hitting you just right, his favorite person walking right next to him.
Jungwon can’t contain his smile. He needed to make sure tomorrow was unforgettable for you. It’s one of the few days he can shamelessly show just how much he cares for you in disguise of celebrating your birthday.
He doesn’t stop thinking about you even after you’ve called him out.
“You look deep in thought, Wonie.”
“I have a very good reason to be.”
He doesn’t stop after dropping you off either. Jungwon just can’t stop thinking about you.
His thoughts range from different things — homework, his friends, you, class president duties, extracurriculars, you, competitions, exams, you. His mind always finds its way to the color of your eyes or the quirk of your lips.
He only hopes he can keep himself calm enough tomorrow that his feelings don’t bleed through.
Maybe then Jungwon can stop thinking about going in for the first kiss, maybe he just needs to busy himself with the preparations so you can stop being the subject of his dreams for a moment.
Obviously, he’s in denial. Because even with preparations, you will always be the first person he thinks about. Even more after tomorrow when there’s nothing else to be busy about.
His thoughts cut short when he meets the front of his house. So, he stops spinning the daydream of you for a moment — he can always resume in his dreams.

V. D-Day
You couldn’t say you saw it coming.
While you knew your best friend, Yang Jungwon, was up to something — you didn’t think he’d go far and beyond to actually plan a surprise birthday party.
You’d thought your birthday would just be a repeat of last year. A simple dinner with your family and Jungwon coming over to throw you a mini celebration. He knew that was enough for you, and it was enough for him too.
However, this year, he decided to take it a step further.
It was wonderfully planned. He had borrowed Jay’s house for the evening and carefully strewed colorful balloons of red, blue, and yellow around the walls (ones that the boys blew up the entire afternoon and taped themselves).
At the center, with the table of food and cake, lettered balloons carefully lined up to spell “Hapy B1rthdy”.
It was strangely endearing – how the balloons were spelt wrong. The effort was so visibly there, and you don’t know why the simple spelling error has your heart bursting with happiness. Sunghoon won’t tell anyone he almost got a scolding from Jungwon for cramming the purchase of the balloons.
They had to make do with the material Sunghoon got.
Jungwon spots the smile on your face as your friends jump out to greet you with a happy birthday. He finally feels calm. His peace has always depended on your own, and nothing warms Jungwon’s heart more than seeing his efforts in full effect.
The moment was sweet. It was just an intimate get together with you and your friends, and you had Jungwon to thank for that. If only you could actually find him through the string of people making their way to you and greeting you.
“Happy Birthday!” Sunoo wraps you up in a big hug after Wonyoung and Sullyoon had collectively greeted you and showered you with compliments.
You smile at the boy, linking your arms around his to complete the hug. “Were you surprised?”
“I was!” You exclaim, pulling away from the hug so you can face him while you’re talking. Though, your conversation doesn’t last long when Riki pulls you away from Sunoo.
His expression is serious as he drags you away, but before you can ask him what’s wrong, he stops in his tracks. With a pout on his face, he opens his arms wide and greets you with a happy birthday.
You laugh endearingly at the boy and grant him the hug he was demanding. He mumbles something about how everyone was hogging you, and he’d been meaning to greet you first but everyone beat him to it. You thank him, patting his back and he pulls away with a smile.
While grateful to see all your friends and be greeted on your birthday, there’s one person you’ve been looking for since everyone had jumped from their hiding spots. Quickly scanning Jay’s house, you finally find your best friend.
Jungwon’s eager eyes brighten at the sight of you before they motion towards his phone as if to tell you to check your own. Then, he brings his gaze up to shoot you a warm smile.
The way you mirror his smile brings a splash of giddiness into his heart.
wonie: come here. let’s go to the rooftop! i’m tired of sharing u >:(
Your feet easily bring you towards the boy behind the whole evening’s surprise. He reaches out and you sigh happily when you find his arms, inching closer so you can rest your head against his chest, cheek pressed against his shirt. He wraps you up, encasing you in his embrace, with his lips brushing over the top of your head.
“Thank you, Won.” The melodic sound of your gratefulness and the laugh that escapes your lips feels like the purest definition of heaven.
He’d plan a million birthday parties to make sure you’re forever genuinely happy.
“Oh, before I forget.” One of his arms unhook from your figure, grabbing something from behind him before carefully placing the party hat on your head, hooking the band just under your chin. He puts one on for himself too.
“Now let me borrow you for a bit.”
Without a single warning, you feel a large hand grip onto yours, tugging at you to follow him up the steps to Jay’s rooftop. You smile warmly at the giddiness radiating from the boy at his gift.
The moon has risen, taking the sun’s place as it leaves to rest. A mass of stars follows suit, taking over the skies and shining particularly brighter for you and Jungwon.
You stand there in silence for a bit, glancing at Jungwon who is clearly having a battle in his own mind. He looks pretty with the full moon flooding a silver glow on his face.
“Are you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” You laugh, pressing the palm of your hand on his cheek to check if he was still there.
Jungwon had a tendency of dozing off into daydreams.
He swats your hand away with a sheepish grin, turning his attention back to you and pretending not to feel a new wave of giddiness in his heart.
“Why wouldn’t I be okay?” He shakes his head at you before he sighs out in a poor attempt to calm himself down.
It was now or never.
Despite the pounding of his heart, Jungwon knows exactly what to do, but it doesn’t really help when he’s a string of nerves that’s about to untangle with a single wrong move. He feels like he’s floating.
Your smile brings him back on Earth.
When he finally catches his breath, he reaches to slide his hand into yours. He gives you a soft smile before speaking gently. “Close your eyes.”
You’re about to make a retort, to tease him a little, but the look in his eyes was too delicate for you to ruin with a stupid joke. And your heart melts in your chest at how softly he speaks, with his heart on his sleeve like that. So, you comply.
You absentmindedly play with the fingers that lock between yours as you wait for his next move. Then, you feel a gentle squeeze on your hand.
This moment right now is making Jungwon’s heart burn in his chest, making his head hurt in a good way. You look so pretty with your eyes closed and your hands in his, and the moonlight pouring wonders to your face.
“Okay, stay still. I’m about to give you your gift.”
You laugh. So that’s what this is about.
“Finally figured it out?” You bounce between your feet, playing with his own fingers nervously. Did he actually figure it out? He couldn’t have.
“Stop moving, I’m really nervous right now.” His transparency makes you laugh even more, and he curses you for having to laugh with your sunshine smile. He curses himself even more for saying everything in his head when he’s nervous.
“I’m not moving!” You curl up your lips in a smile, planting your feet to the ground to quietly oblige with his request. “Wonie, how much longer?”
You've been closing your eyes for a good 3 minutes now, and you wonder what’s taking Jungwon so long to give you his present. You’re blissfully unaware of the measures and lengths he’s going through to push through with his plan.
“I’ve been trying to figure out what the best present would be. For a month, I’ve gone back and forth on whatever could be on your wishlist. So… rather than getting it all wrong. I just…”
There, on the rooftop, half drunk from his overwhelming emotions, with the sound of music from the party downstairs and you smiling and his heart bursting with something he couldn’t quite identify, he needed to confess.
You wait for him to continue, but no words come after. Instead, you feel soft lips press against your cheek in a kiss. You feel him linger there for a moment.
Your eyes shoot open and your cheeks flood with warmth when he squeezes your hand and looks at you with his stupid eyes. “I like you.”
Your mouth opens, then closes, then opens again.
You can’t seem to escape his eyes and his smile, and you find the longing in your heart intensify as he pulls you closer.
“I really, really like you.”
You blink. And in one fluid motion, you lunge forward and pull him into a hug. “Jungwon, that was the only thing on my wishlist.” You murmur into his shirt, holding onto him as if the moment could vanish at any second.
The poor boy turns into the deepest shade of red you’ve ever seen, hugging you back and staring blankly ahead of you. Did that actually just happen? Did you… did you like him back?
Yang Jungwon tries not to be big on public displays of affection, but he reaches for your hand while you head back downstairs.
Before he fully allows the pair of you back into the party, he brings his lips to your cheek again, letting it linger there for a moment before looking at you with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen on his face. “This means you like me back, right?”
“I do, you idiot.” He doesn’t fight the giddy grin on his face as he contentedly squeezes your hand.
Jungwon’s heart is bursting with genuine happiness as his and your friends eye your intertwined hands. They send him a cheeky, knowing smirk as they pat his back – as if to congratulate him on finally getting the girl he’s been pining for forever.
When you blow your cake, they ask you what you want, and while looking at Jungwon, you tell them you already have everything you want, and he smiles that giddy smile of his and wonders when it’d be appropriate to kiss you.
The whole room joins in on making fun of the both of you, vomiting air and telling you guys to get a room while nudging each other.
It bothered neither of you.
The evening draws on with games and greetings, with opening presents and singing “happy birthday” in one breath, with your friends spreading icing all over each other’s faces. You look over at Jungwon who is already looking at you, and a smile creeps its way to your face. An identical one crawls on his.
When it was time to say goodbye, Jungwon walks you home and wraps you up in a final embrace. And he thinks he could stay right here in this moment – even if the world ended right now. He’d stay like this forever.
All his life, Jungwon has fought to gain the upper hand. He has always made plans and back-up plans to make sure everything was under his control. He only now realizes that falling in love was never in his control, and one sight of you has Jungwon willing to throw caution in the wind and dive head first.
This time, he doesn’t crash. He finds that he’s landed in your arms, safe and wanting to freefall for you all over again.

Coffee.  A beverage brewed from the roasted and ground seeds of the tropical evergreen coffee plant. One of the top three beverages in the whole world.
And you hate it. You absolutely despise it. The bitter taste, the obnoxious smell. Everything about it makes you want to take whatever plant it comes from and destroy it forever.
Okay, maybe you’re just being a bit dramatic. But still, you don’t get how people actually enjoy that drink.
When you first tried coffee, you were 5 years old. You saw your mom drink it every day and as a curious child, you wanted to try it too. So, when your mom wasn’t watching, you grabbed her cup and drank a sip. Almost immediately your face scrunched up in disgust and you let out a small yelp.
“Oh sweetheart.”, your mom cooed, taking the cup from you. “You’re too young to like coffee. But believe me when you’re older you will like it just as much a mommy does.”
The second time was when you got into high school. The sudden pressure and the amount of homework kept you up a lot, so you thought that coffee might help you with the tiredness. You even went as far as to go all the way to a coffee shop to get professionally made coffee. And still the moment you got back home, ready to take a sip and stay up all night to study, you learned yet again that coffee isn’t something for you.
The third and until now last time, was when you met your best friend. Sunoo and you met up in your first year of college. The two of you immediately got along and now you’re not only best friends, but also roommates. The only problem is, Sunoo is a vivid coffee lover. He claims to not be able to get through the day without coffee. You heard him praise the beverage every day and since you were older and more mature, you thought that maybe now you will like it. But once again you were wrong. Not even Sunoo’s special preparation could change your opinion on coffee.
So, now you’re here. In your second year of college, sitting at the kitchen table, trying to study, and having to endure the obnoxious smell that lingers around the apartment.
“I swear, if you make that face again while I enjoy my coffee, I will pour it on you.”, your best friend speaks up from his seat on the couch.
“I just don’t get how you can drink that, Sunoo. What is there to enjoy about?”
Your best friend rolls his eyes and walks over to where you sit at the kitchen table. He puts his cup down in front of you, on purpose, and takes a place on the other chair.
“You just haven’t had good coffee before.”, he states with an innocent smile on his face.
Good coffee? Does good coffee even exist? You doubt it.
“Honestly, I gave up on liking coffee and so should you. I mean, not on liking coffee, but on forcing it upon me. There are other things I can drink. Like a good hot chocolate or Red Bull if I need some caffein. And see it as something positive. It just means more coffee for you.”
Your best friend shrugs at your answer, already used to your stubborn side and knowing that it has no use trying to start a discussion with you about that subject. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
There is nothing you hate more than exam week. Not only is your head exploding from all the knowledge you have to force into it, but the lack of sleep you’re getting is making you look and also act like a zombie.
But it’s over. Well, at least until the next exam week starts, but that’s for your future you to worry about. All you want to do is go home, change into comfortable clothes, and spend the whole weekend sleeping.
„Let’s go into a café.”, your best friend says the moment you get into your shared apartment.
“What?”
“Let’s go into a café.”, he repeats himself, taking your bag from you and tossing it on the couch. “Come on, it’s fun. A friend of mine is working there, and I always wanted to check it out. He’s working today and I just know the two of you will get along.”
“You have friends?”, you ask amused, throwing yourself on the couch with a groan. “Besides that, I just had the worst week of my life and all I want to do is sleep.”
Sunoo rolls his eyes, before sitting down beside you, taking your arms and making you sit up, which you did but not without letting out some protesting whines. “First of all, I do have friends, thank you very much. And second, that’s exactly why we should go out. You need some distraction and I’ve heard that the café makes the best hot chocolate and strawberry cake.”
You can’t deny that that offer sounds good. So, with a few mumbles of complaint, you stand up and walk towards your room.
“What are you doing?”, Sunoo asks, watching you leave.
“Changing. Which you should too, so we can leave soon.”
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
The moment you step into the café, you are thankful that Sunoo made you come here. The smell of fresh baked goods overpowers all the sleepiness in your body. You can almost ignore the smell of coffee. But just almost.
The café itself is rather small, but one of the prettiest things you’ve ever seen. The place is filled with a lot of green plants, fairy lights on the yellow walls and couches on the side. The tables are decorated with cute yellow napkins and behind the counter where the machines and the display window with the cakes in it are, hangs a little sign reading ‘today is your day’. It has you smiling a bit, loving the positive and comfortable atmosphere in this little space.
The yellow theme makes it even better. While yellow isn’t particularly your favorite color, it works as a little happy.
“Wow, Sunoo, this is the coolest place I’ve ever seen. Why didn’t you bring me here earlier?”
Your best friend admires your beaming face, having been worried the whole week about your wellbeing. Sunoo knows that once you want something, you do everything possible to achieve it. In this case it’s good grades. He knows how hard you study to be on top of your class and how you will neglect every important thing in your life to get this achievement. Important things like sleeping, eating and your social contacts.
“I’m glad you like it, Y/n. Oh look, there is Jungwon.” You follow the eyes of Sunoo to spot a young boy talking to an elderly woman. He is leaning down, intensively listening to what the woman is saying and smiling politely at her. You immediately notice the dimples that form on his cheeks. Cute.
“Let’s sit down and wait until Jungwon can take our order.” The café is mostly empty, aside for the older woman. And you’re thankful for that. Crowded spaces aren’t exactly your preferred type of place to hang out.
Sitting down with Sunoo at a nice table gives you some time to look around the café yet again. Somehow with every time you look around, you see something new appearing in the small space. A new detail that makes this café even more adorable. Like the small sundae formed out of clay that sits on top of the counter. Or the picture of a croissant sitting in front of the Eiffel Tour while drinking a coffee hanging on the wall. You also notice the way all the plants are in perfect order, not one stands out of line or is overgrown. They are perfectly trimmed and look like they get watered regularly. The yellow napkins are formed into little butterflies with a small chocolate treat on them. They too are perfect. Folded so precisely, you swear that if you just had to make one, you would have lost your nerves. But what is yet the sweetest and also most considered thing, is the little mental health cards all over the room. Small cards with different quotes, positive affirmations and motivations on them. You swear that you just walked into heaven. How can this place be so perfect and yet not overfilled with people?
“I’m sorry for the wait.”, a voice brings you out of your thoughts. “Oh! Hey, Sunoo! You really came.” Looking up, you see Jungwon smiling at your friend.
“Of course! I could not miss out on this place. And you didn’t lie, it’s amazing. Right Y/n?” Suddenly the attention of both men is on you.
All you can do is nod, giving a quick thumbs up.
“Y/n? You must be Sunoo’s best friend. He talks a lot about you.”, Jungwon exclaims, giving you a sweet smile. Damn, that really is his charm.
“You talk about me?”, you ask your friend with raised eyebrows. “I knew it. You are obsessed with me.”
Sunoo lets out a scoff. “Don’t let it get to your head. I’m just mentioning the person I’m literally living with.”
Before the two of you can continue to argue, Jungwon gets in between. “What can I get for you? Have you decided on something to order?”
“I want a mint chocolate mocha and chocolate cake.”, Sunoo says, beaming up at Jungwon.
“Well, for me a hot chocolate and a strawberry cake.”
Jungwon writes your orders down on a little notebook that he carries around in his apron. “Your order will be here soon.”
You watch as he leaves, truly captivated by him. That doesn’t go unnoticed by your best friend. “What’s got you so kept up?”
“Hm?”
Your friend can’t help but chuckle as he looks at your confused face. “Oh, someone has a little crush on Jungwon.”
“What? No. I just met him five minutes ago.”, you exclaim, shaking your head.
“Doesn’t mean you can’t find him cute.”
Well, maybe you do think he is cute. How can you not? The small dimples that appear whenever he smiles, the cute cat-like features he has and the kindness he carried the moment you stepped into the café. Maybe it does sound like you do have a crush on him, but that’s not the case. You could never catch feelings for someone this fast. You were never a believer of love at first sight, even if you call yourself a hopeless romantic. For you love is something that blossoms over time. It’s built up from trust and trust can only be formed with a lot of time passing by. It’s built on respect from both sides. Without that love is simply not possible, so you won’t even consider it. Not with someone you met a few minutes ago.
“A mocha and chocolate cake for you, Sunoo and hot chocolate and a strawberry cake for you, Y/N. I hope you enjoy it.”, Jungwon speaks in a gentle voice as he puts your orders on the small table in front of you.
“Do you have a few minutes to spare?”, Sunoo asks Jungwon, already taking a bite of his cake.
“Yeah, there isn’t a lot going on at the moment, so I think I have a few minutes. Why?”
“I thought maybe you can join me and Y/n, so we can talk and catch up a bit. And you two can get to know each other a bit more.”
“Sure, why not.”, Jungwon agrees, sitting down on the empty chair between you and Sunoo.
“How’s English Lit going?”, he asks Sunoo who in return lets out a deep sigh.
“Same old. Mr Walker is still as mean as ever.”
Now it’s your turn to let out a sigh. “God, don’t even let me get started.”
“Why?”, Jungwon asks. “You’re in the class too?”
“In the class? No, I’m suffering through it.”, you frustratingly munch on your cake before continuing. “I cannot stress enough how this man should not be a teacher. Don’t get me wrong, he can explain good and has so much knowledge, but when it comes to human interactions or empathy, this man is lost. You know how in English Lit we are supposed to discuss English literature and also express criticism towards it, which leads to discuss and so on. Whenever someone criticizes something or even just expresses their opinions, he declines it and continues his lesson. He gives us no room to voice our thoughts. He just does his thing and goes.
“And the assignments. They are longer than my will to live, I can tell you that much. I spent so many sleepless nights writing and doing research and what do I get? Nothing. He just grades it and sends it back, no comments, no helpful tips, just the grade and that’s it. I’m honestly so sick of it. I want all my hours of sleep back.” Dramatically you let your head fall on your arms, realizing a little whine.
“Sorry.”, Sunoo says, rubbing the back of his neck. “We just had exam week and she is exhausted. And well, since she doesn’t drink coffee to keep her awake, she pretty much could fall asleep anywhere at this rate.”
“You don’t drink coffee?”, Jungwon asks, his voice laces with a bit of shock.
“Nope.”, you state, lifting your head up again. “Hate it. Worst drink in the whole wide world. Disgusting. Disgraceful. Infuriating.”
Jungwon lays a hand on his heart, gasping loudly. “How can you say that to a Barista? Coffee is the best thing this world has ever experienced.”
You just roll your eyes, taking a huge sip of your hot chocolate out of spite. “I highly doubt that. But I can’t argue with coffee lovers. You guys are strangely stubborn.” You give Sunoo a pointed look to which he just sticks his tongue.
“Believe me. Try one of my coffee’s and you will change your mind.”
“Don’t even try.”, Sunoo intervenes. “I’ve been trying for over a year to get her to like coffee, but she just won’t. You will just waste your time.”
“Oh no, believe me. I can make her like coffee.”
You let out a laugh, which sounds more like a scoff. “Nice try, but I don’t believe you.”
“Okay, then let’s make a bet. If I can make you fall in love with coffee, you will have to do something for me.”
“And if you don’t?”, you ask.
“Then I will have to do something for you. Anything you want.”
“Anything I want?” It’s a good deal, you think, but is it worth it having to drink a lot of coffee?
“I don’t have the time to come to your café every day.”
“Well, then how about once a week? It gives me time to perfect my coffee creations and give you the best versions of it.”, Jungwon grins, holding his hand out for you. “Do we have a deal?”
You sigh, taking his hand in yours and giving it a firm shake. You would do anything to prove to a coffee lover that coffee isn’t that great. “Don’t make me regret this.”
“I won’t! Just see, you will become a coffee lover!”
☕1: Mocha
Rain. There is something so comforting about rain. The way it feels when soft, cold droplets of it fall on your heated skin. Relaxing your muscles and making you feel like you’re floating on top of a cloud into paradise where all your worries in life disappear and you can just exist. The smell, how it creeps up your whole body and makes you want to stop and take it in until even the dwell of it disappears. And you don’t mind that you come home with soaked clothes and wet hair. You don’t mind the coldness that lingers on your skin. Because the moment you dried your hair, changed your clothes, and got yourself a cup of tea, you can sit in front of your window and watch how the streets get washed up from the rain. You observe the cars driving into puddles and splashing the water in every direction. You watch as a couple, sharing an umbrella, walks past your apartment building, arms wrapped around each other to keep the other one warm from the coldness of the rain. And you look at the rain drops on your window, betting in your head on which one will win the race, happy when yours won and disappointed, when you focused on the wrong one.
You wrap your blanket around you tighter, as you hear the door to your apartment open. Knowing it’s Sunoo, you stand up, tiptoeing out of your bedroom.
“It really had to rain today.”, you hear him complain. “Out of all days.”
You snicker a bit, watching how he tries to fix his wet hair in the mirror of your hallway. “Don’t laugh at me.”, he speaks up, pouting in your direction. “Not all of us are rain lovers.”
“Don’t be so dramatic. Rain is awesome.”
Sunoo walks into the kitchen, taking out the rest of the Chinese food the two of you ordered yesterday. “Yeah, when you sit at home and don’t get wet.” He puts it on a plate and into the microwave. “Want some too?”
“No, I will pass.”, you say, heaving yourself on top of the kitchen counter. “I will save my hunger for later. I want to eat another strawberry cake when I go to the café.”
“Oh right.”, the boy exclaims, taking out the plate and digging into his food. “You’re meeting up with Jungwon today. Excited? Nervous? Giddy?”
You pull your eyebrows into a frown. “Why should I? I’m just fulfilling my side of the bet.”
“Yeah, and also meeting up with a super cute boy. I saw you looking at him. You definitely find him cute.”
You roll your eyes, jumping down from the kitchen counter and walking back into your room. “Cute or not, I’m just there to proof him wrong.”
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
Entering the café, you are immediately overcome with the same tranquility as last week. Insane how one place can make you feel so at ease.
“You made it!”, you hear a familiar voice exclaim. You look up to see Jungwon behind the counter. He’s dressed in a white shirt with blue pants and his apron on. You notice the little print lingering on the left side of his chest. ‘Café Sunshine’. Last week you didn’t look at the café’s name, just amazed by the unique furniture, but it definitely makes sense why the café is named that way. Despite the rain you feel like you have stepped into the definition of sunshine.
“Yeah, sorry for being late. My bus driver thought it was necessary to talk to another bus driver for 5 minutes.”, you roll your eyes, sitting down at the same table you sat at last week.
“Don’t worry. Because of the rain no one came in today, so I had a lot of time to perfect your drink.”
You nod at him, showing him a slight unsure smile. Being honest with yourself, you have to admit that you’re a bit scared. It’s been a long time since you last tried coffee and trying it in front of someone who makes coffee as a living is intimidating you. You don’t want to be rude if you don’t like it. Despite loving to prove coffee lovers wrong, Jungwon is still mostly a stranger to you. A really friendly one as well.
“Okay, but please don’t be too disappointed. I really don’t want you to put so much time in it just for me to hate it.”
He just smiles at you, his dimples on full display. “Y/n, don’t worry, okay? I love making coffee and you just give me a reason to practice more, that’s all. And if you don’t like it, I will just finish your drink.”
You let out a deep breath, that you weren’t aware you were holding, clearly relieved at Jungwon’s reassurance.
“So,”, he says, putting the coffee down in front of you. “this is a Mocha. It’s a variation made from espresso, hot milk, and liquid chocolate. I even put a little cream topping on it to make it look cuter. And the same chocolate and high milk content makes the Mocha taste very mild and sweet. I gathered that you might dislike coffee because of the bitterness, so this is a great start.”
You listen to everything Jungwon tells you and you have to admit, it makes you smile a bit. He really put a lot of thought into making a coffee that might match your taste.
“Thank you, Jungwon.”, you say, grabbing the cup with one hand. You can’t lie, it looks pretty good, and the chocolate almost covers the smell of coffee. But just almost.
“Y/n.”, Jungwon calls out your name, making you look right into his worried eyes. “You don’t have to drink it if you don’t want to. You know that, right? I know we have a bet, but I would never force you to do anything you don’t want to do.”
You show Jungwon a smile, appreciating his kindness. You swear this boy couldn’t get even more perfect.
“It’s not that I’m uncomfortable, I’m just scared of the taste. Last time I drank coffee I had a full on fit and had to drink a liter of milk to make the taste go away.” That earns you a little chuckle from the boy sitting in front of you.
“I have an idea.”, he says, standing up and walking back to the counter. He grabs a plate and puts a piece of the strawberry cake you ate last week on it. Walking back to you, Jungwon puts the plate down in front of you and takes a seat again.
“Here.”, he says showing you his dimpled smile. “I saw you enjoying this cake last week. If you don’t like the coffee and need to get the taste away, just eat the cake.”
“I like your way of thinking.”, you state in a teasing voice.
You grab the mug once again, this time taking a small sip. The first thing you taste is the strong flavor of chocolate, but sadly that isn’t lasting long. Because two seconds later the espresso makes itself present on the flavor buds in your mouth. And while it’s not strong, you still shudder slightly at the bitterness.
Jungwon watches the whole scene, amusement clearly written all over his face. “That bad?”
“No, it’s not bad. I mean, it’s not good either. It’s just the bitterness.”, you answer, already shoving a spoon of cake into your mouth.
“You’re really a tough case, huh?”, Jungwon remarks, leaning his head on one hand, watching you with his cat-like eyes.
“Warned you before, but you wouldn’t listen.”, you shrug, sighing at the welcoming sweetness of the strawberries. “Want to just call it quits and admit that you won’t get me to like coffee?”
“What?”, Jungwon exclaims, eyes wide and mouth agape in fake shock. “Calling it quits? Never. Darling, this is just the beginning of this journey.”
☕2: Cappuccino
Jungwon wasn’t kidding when he told you that this was just the beginning. For the whole week he kept on texting you, sending you different designs of coffee and hyping up his recipes. He told you he is trying even harder to make you like the next one but when you tried to get some hints regarding the next coffee, he declined immediately, telling you to be patient.
And as much as you hate to admit it, you are actually looking forward to meeting him again.
Other than last week, the sun is out. Shining down on earth and painting it in a soft glow. That doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the people living in your town. The once empty café is now filled with people to brim and instead of calmness washing over you when you enter, you feel a wave of stress overcoming you.
You’ve never been a people person, preferring staying at home in the comfort of your room where no one can disturb you. The only person you really tolerate is Sunoo and that also took a while until it got to that point, even if he is the complete opposite of you. Sunoo is a social butterfly, making friends wherever he goes. And while that sometimes annoys you, you’re happy your friend has that ability.
“Hey, sorry Y/n. I will be with you in a second. Sit down and I will bring you your coffee.”, Jungwon says as he passes you by, already hurrying to the next table he has to serve at.
You look around the room, recognizing some familiar faces from your college. It was bound to happen that this place wouldn’t stay hidden for a long time, but you’re kind of sad that so many people discovered this place and disturb your peace and quiet now.
Instead of following Jungwon’s instruction, you stay standing at the entrance. You don’t see a free table anyway. Every table is occupied by students who are loudly talking to each other. You see how Jungwon easily makes conversation, laughing at the things the students say and in return making them laugh at whatever he remarks.
Envy is what’s filling you. You wish you could have this ease while talking to people. You wish you could just get over yourself, sit down and drink that damn coffe so you can go back home. But not only envy is filling you, disappointment as well. You were really looking forward to this. To spend time with Jungwon and trying something new. The whole weeklong you texted each other, not only about the coffee, but about random events in your life.
He told you how his cat at home only cuddles with him whenever she’s sleepy and how when she’s awake, she is a little diva. He also told you that that’s probably the case because he treats her like a queen, giving her everything she wants and almost never being able to say no. You told him how you miss home sometimes. How you miss your weekly family night game evenings where you would destroy your brother at Uno and how all of you would lose your nerves over board games.
You shared a lot with each other and for some reason it wasn’t even hard. It felt so easy talking to him, opening up and sharing stuff that took you a while to tell Sunoo. It’s like you’ve known each other for years already. So, it’s understandable why you notice the slight feeling of disappointment coursing through your veins.
Jungwon notices you not moving away from the entrance and while he gets a few seconds to spare, he looks at your face. And what he’s greeted with worries him. You’re pale. Your face shows clear signs of unease. And he feels stupid. He feels stupid because you told him how you don’t like crowded spaces and he forgot. He should have cancelled today and made you come back on a less crowded day, but he forgot. He was simply so excited to see you again and show you the coffee he’s been working on, that he just forgot. But you’re here now anyway and he would regret it if he just sent you away.
So instead, he ignores the call for his name from one of the tables and makes his way over to you. He gently takes your hand and guides you behind the counter where the register stands. “Wait here.”, he tells you in a gentle voice before walking back and grabbing a chair. He takes it behind the counter and places it down in front of you. “Just sit here, it’s the furthest away from all the people.”
You show him a small appreciative smile before whispering a quiet thanks.
“I’m going to serve one of the tables and then I’m right back with you, okay? We can try the new coffee then. Is that okay with you or do you rather want to go home?”
Going home sounds tempting, but you’re already here and while you still feel a bit of panic in you, you actually really want to stay. For the bet, of course.
“No.”, you croak out. “I want to stay. I will wait here.”
Almost immediately, his face breaks into a wide grin. “Okay, great. Give me a few seconds and I’m right back.” And with a bit more speed in his walk, he goes to serve the customers. From your position you have a good view of the table Jungwon is standing at. You recognize the girls sitting there from your math class. You see how they twist their hair as they talk to Jungwon, giving him flirty looks with their eyes and a small laugh escapes your mouth. Because while they’re obviously flirting, Jungwon seems to be oblivious to it. He notes down their orders, giving them polite smiles and keeping the conversation light. It’s cute.
When he returns a few minutes later he smiles, a bit relieved you’re still sitting in the same position as before. “I’m making your coffee now and believe me when I say I perfected this one.”
You watch as he walks over to the machine, only three steps away from you and starts his work. He looks like he’s been doing this for years by how professionally he handles everything.
“You know the girls were trying to flirt with you?”, you say, giving him an amused smile.
“What?”, he asks, thinking he heard you wrong over the loud noise of the coffee machine.
“The girls at table 3, they were flirting with you.”
“Really?”, he questions, looking back just to see them smile and wave at him. “I didn’t notice.”
“I know.”, another laugh escapes your mouth. “You’re so oblivious to it, it’s honestly funny.”
“So, you find it funny, huh?”, he asks teasingly, raising his eyebrows. “Not so funny if I would put a lot of salt into your coffee.”
You gasp. “You would never.”
“Oh, watch me.”, he says but before any of you can continue, a voice interrupts you.
“I’m sorry, I don’t want to be a bother.”, the elderly woman that you saw here two weeks ago states. “I just wanted to pay, it’s a little too crowded in here for me today.”
Jungwon gives her a gentle smile before putting down your half-made coffee and walking to the register. “You would never be a bother, Mrs. Sim. Okay, you had your usual so that makes 8.99.”
The lady takes out her purse and lays the money on the table. “That your girlfriend?”, she asks, a sly smile on her face.
“Oh, no.”, Jungwon stutters out, cheeks turning into a slight shade of red. “She’s my friend.” You give the lady a shy smile, trying not to let your heated cheeks show.
“What a bummer. She’s pretty.”, she takes the change out of Jungwons hands and gives you two a last smile. “See you tomorrow, Jungwon. Have a great day, you two.”
Jungwon returns back to the coffee, a slight tension of embarrassment lingering in the air. “You know this lady well?”, you ask, trying to break the tension.
“Oh yeah.”, he clears his throat, trying to hide his cracking voice. “She’s my friend Jake’s grandma and was really close friends with my grandma. I look up to her because she’s been huge part of my life for as long as I can remember.”
You watch him as he purrs milk into the coffee, creating some kind of pattern. “That’s so sweet. She seems really nice.”
“She is.”, he remarks, walking over to you and handing you the cup of coffee. “Tadaaaa. I even made coffee art for you.”
As you look down at the hot liquid in your hands, you can’t help but smile. With the milk foam he created a little heart on top of the coffee.
“Aw.”, you coo at the boy in front of you. “This looks so pretty.”
“Now you only have to like it. It’s a cappuccino. Pretty much everyone that has stepped foot into a café has heard of it. Cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink made from an espresso and hot milk froth. I put a gentle sprinkle of cocoa powder on top to make it sweeter, but not too much because I didn’t want it to distract too much from the original taste.”
A call of Jungwon’s name interrupts the small moment between the two of you.
“I will be there in a second.”, he replies to the customer, still looking at you. “We have to hurry up a bit today.”
You nod, slowly guiding the cup to your lips and taking a little sip. Jungwon watches you intensively and you try your hardest not to show your dislike for the coffee he made.
“You don’t like it.”, he states.
“No, it’s fine. I mean, it’s coffee, but it’s fine.”, you try to convince him.
“Y/n, don’t lie. I can clearly see how you don’t like it.”, you can see the flash of disappointment in his eyes, but he quickly tries to play it off and shows you a bright smile. “Third times a charm, right? Next time you will love the coffee.”
And for some reason you really hope you will. Even if that means you lose the bet.
☕3. Bómbon
“How do you even know Jungwon? I mean it’s not like he goes to our college.”, you ask Sunoo who lays beside you on the couch, watching an episode of a k-drama you found a few days ago.
“He did.”, Sunoo answers, eyes focused on the tv. “We met at the history course first year of college and just sat beside each other for a while. Before he dropped out of college.”
“Why did he drop out?”, you ask, turning your body so you can look at your best friend better.
“I don’t know.”, he mumbles. “Never told me. Every time I saw him, I forgot to ask and now it would be too weird to bring it up now.”
It’s a shame, you think. You didn’t know that Jungwon was at your college, if you had, maybe you could have been friends earlier. Or you would have never talked to him. That’s the most likely scenario. If it weren’t for Sunoo bumping into you and spilling coffee on your favorite shirt, you would have never talked to him. Sunoo felt so bad that he searched online where your shirt was from and bought you two new ones. He gave those to you the next day and told you he bought an extra one in case someone else bumps into you and ruins the shirt again. After that, Sunoo decided to spend everyday with you. He walked with you to class, accompanied you to the library to study and trusted you enough to tell you his whole life story. And almost a year later, the two of you are roommates. Walking around each other with unbrushed teeth and bed hair, crying your eyes out after watching a sad k-drama and caring for each other whenever the other person lays in bed with a cold.
To sum it up, you have seen each other at your worst and that all wouldn’t have happened if Sunoo wasn’t so determined to be your friend. Without that happening, you probably would sit in a tiny apartment, watching tv all by yourself and wondering where the hell you went wrong with your life.
“Sunoo?”
“Yeah.”, the questioned man hums, still trying to focus on the drama that’s playing.
“Why did you decide to be my friend?”, you ask him. Noticing that you have the urge to talk, Sunoo grabs the remote control and stops the k-drama. Moments like that happen rarely, where you start a conversation leading to a deeper and more emotional topic. That’s why he faces his body to you, giving you his full attention before he says his next words.
“Well, if I spilled my coffee on any other person’s favorite shirt, they would have lost their minds. They would have either cried or started screaming at me. But you just smiled at me. You told me that’s it okay and that you get that my mind was somewhere else.”, he smiles at the memory of the day you two met. “You even went as far as telling me that the life of a college student is stressful enough than to worry about a shirt getting ruined. But even through your kind words and your bright smile, I could see some sadness in your eyes. I could tell you really liked the shirt, but instead of making me feel bad, you tried to comfort me.”
Sunoo leans forward, taking one of your hands in his. “And from that moment on, I knew that I had to have someone like you in my life. And as cheesy as it sounds, but everyday that I get to spent with you as my best friend, I’m glad that I spilled my coffee all over you.”
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
A frown appears on your face as you read the ‘closed’ sign that’s hanging on the door of the café. Looking through the window, you see no one inside, not even Jungwon. Did you mess up the day? But you clearly remember Jungwon telling you to meet him here on Saturday. Maybe he forgot. Or maybe you did read the message wrong. Unsure, you take out your phone, checking your messages.
Jungwon: Let’s meet up on Saturday. It’s less crowded then. Does 2 pm sound good to you?
It is Saturday and while you’re here 10 minutes earlier, you don’t see how it can be closed. The café normally opens at 8 am and closes at 5 pm.
You sigh, putting your phone back into your pocket, taking one last look into the café. You get ready to just go home and spend the day either doing left up work for some assignments or just get into the bathtub with the book you’ve been wanting to read. But before you can even turn around to walk back to your apartment, you hear a familiar voice calling for your name.
“Y/n”, Jungwon calls out. “Wait up.” He jogs over to you, keys jiggling in his hand.
“I’m so sorry. I wanted to be here earlier, but my mom had a problem with her phone, and I had to fix it for her.”, he explains as he opens the door to the café, holding it open so you can be the first one to enter.
“It’s fine. You don’t have to apologies, Jungwon.”, you say, as you sit down at your usual table which thankfully wasn’t filled with students this time. Jungwon tosses his jacket on the chair next to yours, walking behind the registers and getting his machines started.
“Why aren’t you taking the ‘closed’ sign away?”, you ask him, watching how he ties his apron.
“Because we are closed today.” His answer is kept short as he’s already focusing on making your coffee.
“What do you mean closed?” You walk over to him, hating the distance between the two of you. You hate to admit it, but you like looking at him when you talk. For some reason, you find the small facial expressions he does whenever you talk to each other adorable. And those dimples. Yeah, can’t get enough of them as well.
“I closed the café today, because I wanted you to feel comfortable while trying the coffee I make. And well, last week I could see how the only thing you wanted to do was go home, so I made sure today that won’t cross your mind even once.”
You feel heat crawling up your neck, painting your cheeks in a red color, as you listen to Jungwon’s words. He closed the café just to make you feel more comfortable.
“Jungwon, you really didn’t have to.”, you say, but as soon as those words leave your mouth, he dismisses them.
“Y/n, it’s important to me that you feel comfortable. I know that this is all a bet we try to win, but over the last three weeks you became a dear person to me, and I will do anything to try to make you as happy as you can be while spending time with me.”
Butterflies fly wildly through your stomach, and you think you might have to throw up. What is happening to you?
Before you can answer him, which you weren’t even sure if you can, he takes the cup of coffee and walks back to your table. You trail behind him like a puppy and take a seat, looking down at the two layered coffee.
“This one is called a Bómbon. It’s originally from Spain. It’s just two ingredients, espresso and sweetened condensed milk. It has two layers, because the condensed milk holds the espresso up without mixing it like milk would do. It’s perfect for someone with a sweet tooth.”
If you had to decide between the two coffees you’ve seen and this one, you would choose the Bómbon based on its looks.
“Well, it already won, because it looks good.”, you remark, making Jungwon let out a small laugh. Another wave of butterflies’ courses through your belly as you hear the gentle sound. Maybe you’re getting sick.
“Give it a try.” And like routine, you take a small sip, ignoring the waiting eyes of Jungwon.
But this time is different. While you can still taste the lingering bitterness of the espresso, the sweetness of the condensed milk is almost completely washing it away. You know, you will still not order this for yourself next time you go to a café, but you can admit that it’s not bad.
“I actually kind of like this one.” Jungwon’s eyes widen at your statement, making him look like a little child on Christmas.
“Wait really?”, he asks, not believing what you just said.
“Yeah. I mean, I will probably not order it again, but for coffee it’s good.”
Jungwon could just accept that, say the bet is over, get his side of the prize and move on with his life. But for some reason that still isn’t enough for him. Three weeks ago, he told you he would make you fall in love with coffee, the same way he fell in love with it. You, telling him the coffee he made is good, but you won’t drink it again, isn’t what he meant when he was proposing the bet.
When he heard you admitting to hating coffee, he felt a crack in his heart. Jungwon was surrounded by coffee his whole life, his grandmother introducing him to the wonders and varieties of it. He learned to love coffee at a young age. When he was ten, he could do better coffee art than most of the big café owners in the city. And while he accepts that every person has different tastes and opinions, something in the way you were so sure of yourself made him want to challenge you. Because who could change your mind if not him? Even his grandmother would have tried to do the same.
So, he can’t give up on the bet. Not when he is that close to making you like coffee. He just has to find the right one for you.
And maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t want the time with you to be over yet and searches for an excuse to see you again. Even if it’s just once a week.
“Jungwon?”, you gently call for his name. “Are you okay? Did I upset you?”
“No!”, he croaks out, clearing his throat before continuing. “You could never, Y/n. Especially not with expressing your honest opinion.”
He shows you another smile. “I think I already know what coffee to do next.”
“Next? Didn’t you win the bet. I mean I liked this coffee.”, you tilt your head to the side, giving him a confused look. And he thinks that this might be the cutest thing you’ve ever done.
“The bet was to make you fall in love with coffee, not to make you like a drink that you won’t ever touch again in your life. I want to make a drink that you can’t get enough of.”
You look at him, out of words. “The determination you have.”, you say, shaking your head. “But this can’t go on forever. We have to set some kind of limit or else I won’t even have the possibility to win this bet.”
“Okay, how about two more coffees. If I can’t make you fall in love with any of those, you won.” Once more, Jungwon holds out his hand for you. You take it, giving it another firm shake, sealing the new deal.
“To whoever wins the bet and has to fulfill the wish of the other person.”, you cheer on, holding the coffee up in the air.
And while Jungwon is watching you, he isn’t sure who he wants to win the bet anymore.
☕4: Frappuccino
The sun is shining brightly, laying warm on your skin, and filling you with happiness. Maybe that’s why Jungwon decided to close the store again and have the two of you meet up at the local park. On any other occasion you would have thought it was date, but since you know this is all just for the bet, you quickly dismiss that thought.
Instead, you sit on the small park bench with your eyes closed and a small smile on your lips as you enjoy the warmth of the sun. Considering it just being the beginning of spring, the sun hasn’t shown its face in its glory a lot. So, you take in every ray of sunshine you can before it decides to go away again.
As you sit on the park bench, waiting for Jungwon, you take in your surroundings. You listen to the soft chirping of the birds that fly over your head, searching for things to build their nest with. A little squirrel, happy about a nut he found, quickly making its way across the wide meadow of the park to the tree it houses in. Kids are playing on the small playground, running around, and laughing until their stomach hurts. You see the parents, watching their children with fondness in their eyes, wishing to be a kid again and having back this ease in life. An older lady sits at the small pond, throwing bread into it for the ducks to eat. Which they do, giving their approvement of the bread in the form of loud croaks. A blue butterfly makes its way over the meadow, flying gracefully and settling down on a flower not far away from you.
While you watch all of that unfold, your thoughts keep on drifting away to one specific person. Jungwon.
The two of you spend the whole week on the phone together, calling each other after every hard day and talking until late in the night. Just for the two of you to wake up the next day tired, but with fond memories.
The more you talk to him, the more you realize the constant feelings you have when you’re around him. While you do have butterflies swirling around your belly whenever his name is just mentioned, you don’t feel nervous around him. Of course, your cheeks turn into a soft shade of marron when he compliments you and your breath sometimes stocks for a moment, when he gets closer, but you still feel comfortable around him. Completely at ease. Like you do when you step foot into the café. Jungwon makes you feel like you could conquer the world if you wanted to. Encouraging your every dream and never failing to make a miserable day better.
You realize how you suddenly don’t want the bet to end. You don’t want to not see him every week anymore.
All you want is to spend everyday with him. Listen to him ramble about the customers that visit Café Sunshine, hear him laugh at a bad joke you tell and look at you with his wide eyes and dimpled smile.
But the more time you spent thinking, the more anxious you got. You two never met up outside of the café. It was always at the same location, the same comfort zone. What happens if you two realize that outside of the café you might not get along that well? What if he was so dazed by work all the time, that he never actually took a good look at you. And now out in the open with the sun shining so bright, he might change his mind about you. While you don’t think Jungwon is shallow, a part of you still makes you want to cancel the meet up.
You are so kept up by your thoughts that you don’t even notice someone sitting down beside you. Jungwon watches you with an amused smile, seeing that you’re deeply lost in your own thoughts.
But that gives him some time to take you in.
Because of the sunny and warm weather, you opted to wear a yellow summer dress that makes you look like you’re out of a Disney movie. There is some part of him that hopes that you put this dress on for him. That you put this dress on thinking about the theme of his café and him and wanted him to notice that. But he ignores that thought and instead decides to just keep on watching you. As creepy as it may look like, Jungwon finds it really comforting. Sitting in silence with someone, appreciating nature and just living in the moment. These are moments Jungwon doesn’t get often since he works at the café all day long. And when he gets home, he is too tired to do anything except for laying in his bed and sleep. It’s no surprise Jungwon barely has any friends. There are regulars that come to the café, but most of them are elderly people. Sometimes, like two weeks ago, there are people his age at the café, but college life is hard. The constant study and the lack of money is keeping most of the students away from his café. He understands that, of course he does, but part of him is disappointed. Jungwon wished he could make more friends, have people to talk to everyday about the things that are going on in his life. Have people to go on trips with, making late night drives to McDonalds and laughing at the lamest jokes together. Have karaoke nights, get completely wasted together and have one of those 3 am deep talks. That’s all Jungwon wants. And while he does have Jake in his life, he doesn’t get to have those things. Jake moved to Australia two years ago to study. So Jungwon really has no one. No one but you.
And for once in his life, he thinks he can really have all the things he has ever wished for with you. He sees this kind of person in you that he doesn’t want to lose, that he can’t lose. It’s been 4 weeks of texting, calling, and meeting up once a week and he already can’t imagine a life without you. It’s weird. It’s weird how you can meet a person and from one to another day that person is one of the most important people in his life.
Jungwon also can’t deny the underlying feelings he’s evolving for you. He isn’t stupid. Of course, he notices the way his body reacts whenever you step into the room or when he hears your voice over the phone. It also doesn’t help that he thinks about you everywhere he goes. Somehow, he sees you in everything. When he goes grocery shopping and he sees hot chocolate, he thinks about you and the first time you met. When he walks past a book shop, he thinks about you and your constant complains about your stupid English Lit teacher. And only yesterday when half the city was covered in rain and the other blessed by the light of the sun, he thought about you. He wanted to send you a picture of the rainbow that was forming in the sky, telling you how beautiful it is. And if you agreed, he would have told you that it’s not half as beautiful as you. But of course, he can’t do that. He can’t do it because you would think he is weird to tell you such things. And he can’t do it because there is no way you could ever reciprocate his feelings.
Jungwon notices that quite some time passed by, so he decides to gently tap your shoulder. You wipe your head around, looking right into his eyes. By the sight of his face, you let out a sigh of relief.
“You scared the shit out of me, Jungwon.”, you say, a small laugh escaping your lips.
“Sorry, I’ve been sitting here for a few minutes, but you were so deeply in your thoughts, I didn’t want to disturb you.” Blush creeps up your neck. Have you really been that kept up in your mind that you didn’t even notice Jungwon’s presence right beside you?
“Penny for your thoughts?”, he asks, scooting a bit closer to you.
“Oh.”, you stutter a bit. “Uhm, just college stuff. Assignments, exams, deadlines, you know the drill.”
Jungwon nods and you can see something changing in his face. Did you say something wrong?
“Let’s pick out a place to sit, I brought a blanket and some things from the café.” You nod at his words, standing up and following him as he walks through the meadow. He finds a place where the grass isn’t high and no flowers bloom, so you two don’t destroy anything. You help Jungwon lay out the blanket and together you plop down on it.
“Want to know what special drink I prepared for you today?”, Jungwon asks, already opening the small basket he took with him.
“What a stupid question, of course I want to see it.”
He laughs at your choice of words and gets out a plastic cup, putting it down in front of you. “I have to say, I went against all my barista morals with this one.” You take the cup in your hand, gasping slightly as you feel the coldness in your hands. “This is a Frappuccino as Starbucks likes to call it. It’s basically espresso, milk, ice cups and whatever sweet thing you want to have in there. Normally I don’t make stuff like that. I like to stick to the classics, but since it’s really hot today I thought that it would be nice for you. And I heard a lot of people say that this is a great starter drink for people who don’t like coffee. I never made it before, so if it sucks, I’m so sorry. Blame the Starbucks recipe I followed, not me.”
You listen to his ramble with a small smile on your lips. It’s cute how much thought he puts into your weekly coffee meet up. You just wished he would do it for you and not for the bet.
“Well thank you, Jungwon. It looks pretty tasty. What sweet thing did you put it?”
“I put in caramel, since it’s one of the sweetest things I found in the café. I hope you don’t mind.” You shake your head, finding his constant appeasement adorable.
“I don’t mind at all.” The cold drink in your hands feels refreshing compared to the hot weather. You’re not used to these temperatures, having lived in cold winter for a few months. But you can’t complain, you love that the sun finally shows its face again.
Without thinking much, you raise the cup to your mouth, placing the straw between your lips and taking a small sip. All while Jungwon watches you with an expecting look on his face. This is the second to last coffee he made for you. Of course, he still has one more chance to prove to you the wonders of coffee, but the hopes that this one will be the mind changer for you are high. After all he has to remind himself that this is a bet. A silly little bet the two of you agreed on, nothing more.
“You’re torturing me with your poker face. What do you think?”
“If I’m being honest with you,”, you start your sentence looking down at the drink. “I like the ice in it since it’s really cooling down my body, but the drink itself is okay, I guess.” You shrug your shoulders but keep your gaze down, so you don’t have to see the flash of disappointment on Jungwon’s face. “I liked the drink last week better. It tasted more real, you know. I could taste how much love you put into the coffee and this one tastes really artificial.”
Even though Jungwon feels a bit sad that you don’t like the coffee he made today, a part of him feels proud on how you can taste the differences in the coffee he made. Last week as the weeks before, he made the coffees with a lot of time and love, not thinking much of it and just following his passion. With this one he tried too hard. He tried too hard to find something you could like and forgot what this is actually about. He made something that he would never sell in his own café, and it felt  so wrong, but he was so desperate to find something you will like, that he went against his own comfort.
“Thank you for noticing that, Y/N. I promise you that next week I will make something I stand behind again, instead of trying to copy coffee from Starbucks.”
You smile at his words, putting the drink down again. “Oh, I almost forgot. I brought you some iced tea in case you don’t like the coffee.” Jungwon grabs the basket and takes out the drinks he brought, along with all the snacks he made himself.
“Jungwon, you didn’t have to.”, you coo, looking at the delicious treats. You can feel your belly grumbling, remembering that the only thing you ate today was a bowl of cornflakes.
As the two of you munch on the snacks in silence, you remember the conversation you had with Sunoo not so long ago.
“Can I ask you something?”, you speak up after a while, making Jungwon look up from the cake in his hands. He nods softly, dimples appearing on his cheeks. “You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but it’s just something that’s been on my mind.”
You clear your throat, moving on the blanket so that you sit facing him more. “Sunoo told me that the two of you went to the same class for a while last year, but suddenly you stopped going. When I asked him why, he said he didn’t know. Why did you quit college and started working at the cafè?”
Jungwon knew this question would come sooner or later, but the timing of it still catches him off guard. He thinks for a few moments, not sure how he should answer you.
“Well, I started going to college because I wanted to get a higher education. I always loved going to school and if you believe it or now, but I never missed a day of school when I was still in high school. I didn’t quit because college got too much for me, I loved going there. I loved the stress of the deadlines. I loved spending nights studying and I loved attending all the classes and gathering new knowledge.”
“Then why did you quit?”, you ask.
“Because my grandma died.”, he says, his voice breaking at the end of the sentence. “It was all so sudden. She was fine before and then suddenly I got a call in the middle of class telling me she was at the hospital.”
You scoot forwards, taking his hands into yours and giving them a soft squeeze. “My grandma spent her teenage years dreaming about owning a café. It’s all she ever wanted. Back then she didn’t have a phone where she could google recipes for coffee. She had to teach it to herself and that’s exactly what she did. My grandma sat in the garage with a coffee machine she got from an old store and coffee beans she stole from her parents and worked on the perfect coffee recipes. While other teenagers her age had lemonade stands, my grandma had a coffee stand. She sold the coffee she made and saved the money.”
You can see the fondness in his eyes as he tells the story. “One day as she walked through the city, she saw a for sale sign in front of a small building and when she looked inside through the window, she knew that this was it. This was the place she wanted to build her café in. And against her parents’ will, she did. She bought all the furniture and put months into making it look the way it is. My grandma was the one who painted the walls yellow, who created a save space for people and made everything that’s on the menu herself. She created a place where everyone can be themselves, where no one is excluded, bullied, or shamed in any way. She chose yellow because it symbolizes optimism, energy, joy, happiness, and friendship.”
“From the second I was able to walk I learned all about coffee. How to make it, how to serve it and how to create my own recipes. She taught me the knowledge I have today.” You get lost in his words, the story playing in your head. And you are thankful. Thankful to a woman you’ve never met for not only giving Jungwon something he talks about with so much passion, but for also being such a huge positive part in his life.
“She also named the café after me.”, he adds, a shy smile forming on his lips. “When I was a child, I would always smile. At stranger in the supermarket. At the waitress in restaurants. I was a happy child and so she gave me the nickname sunshine. She would always call me by that name. And one day when we walked into the café together something clicked inside of her. She made this place to bring joy into people’s life and no word describes it better than sunshine.”
You grin at that yourself, finding the little nickname fitting. From the moment you met him, you noticed the positive energy about him, like he baths in sunshine every day. Something about just being in his presence makes all your worries melt away.
“So, when I heard the news, I knew I couldn’t give the café up. My parents are busy at their own workplaces. And no one could have continued my grandma’s dream better than me. I mean, she taught me everything she knew, everything she put into the café. The only logical thing was to drop out of school and continue what my grandma couldn’t finish. It’s what she would have wanted.”
You nod at his words, taking a few seconds to process all the information you just got. Jungwon gives you that time, looking down at your hands which are still holding his.
“I’m sorry for what happened with your grandmother. I’m really sorry you had to go through that.”, you start, squeezing his hands softly again. “And I love how passionate your grandma was about her dream. I admire her for building up something and putting so much time and energy into it. I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been. But I have one question.”
Jungwon’s head lifts, gently tipping to the side, signaling you to continue. “You said that your grandma would have wanted for you to run the café. But do you want it?”
Jungwon is taken back by your question, his face forming into a frown. If he wants this? He never thought about it. For him it was a no brainer. He loves making coffee and talking to people, hearing new stories and making their days better, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Jungwon knew no one could do the job better than him and that his grandmother would have never trusted anyone else with the café. But does he actually want it? He never thought he would be at this place. He thought he would finish college and get a high paid job his parents chose for him. Jungwon never thought he would drop out of college to become a Barista.
He looks into your eyes, uncertainty still lingering in them. “It’s not what I planned for myself, if I am being honest with you, but it is what I want. I love doing it and I can’t imagine my life without going into this little café every single day.”
You smile at him, pleased with his answer. “Are you happy? Happy with the decisions you made so far?”
“Yes.”, he answers. This time without a hint of hesitation. “Yes, I am happy.”
“That’s all I wanted to hear.” You let go of his hands, grabbing your iced tea again. “If you’re happy, then I’m happy.”
And in that moment as Jungwon hears the words that leave your mouth, he knows that there is no way out anymore.
He has fallen for you, way too hard and way too deep.
☕ 5: Vanilla Latte
Over the whole week Jungwon barely texted you.
He wished you good luck on one exam you had and texted you the details of the next time you meet up, but other than that, he stayed silent.
And while you could have just texted him, part of you was holding you back. You never talked about what the two of you are. Friends? Acquaintances? Or more? Is this going to end after the next time you meet up? Or have the two of you become so close that you will still want to see each other afterwards?
Mulling over those questions, you didn’t want to text Jungwon, thinking that it will just confuse you even more.
Jungwon on the other hand waited for you to text him. While this sounds super childish, he just wanted to see if you reach out to him yourself. Maybe he just thought you missed him as much as he missed you this week.
As Jungwon stands in front of the milk counter in the grocery store, he doesn’t notice a figure approaching him.
“Jungwon?”, he turns around, being faced by a bright smile.
“Sunoo, hey. It’s been a while since we’ve last seen each other. How have you been?”
Sunoo sets down his grocery bag that’s already filled with plenty of things. Jungwon assumes you send Sunoo to shop for the items you need, since you told him once how much you hate going grocery shopping and how time consuming and energy draining it is. “I’ve been great. College life is stressing me out, but it’s nothing I can’t manage. What about you?”
“That’s great to hear, Sunoo.”, he sends Sunoo a soft smile. Even though he barely sees Sunoo anymore, he was an important person in Jungwons life for a few weeks. He was the only friend Jungwon had in class, a person he could talk to in his breaks and someone he could exchange notes with. It also helped that Sunoo always knew how to make Jungwons day a bit better. “I’ve also been good. The café is getting more popular, which means more work for me, but I enjoy it. The people are all so kind and I’ve never had this many good conversations with strangers before.”
“That’s amazing, Jungwon. I’m so proud of your accomplishments.” Sincerity laces Sunoo’s voice, clearly happy for his friend. “I would love to continue talking to you, but I have a hangry girl in the apartment and if I take any longer, she will be even more obnoxious than she already his.”
He can tell Sunoo is being sarcastic, but he can’t help to be jealous about it. Sunoo gets to see you every day. He comes home everyday to you.
Jungwon envies him for that. Not only does he want to see you every day, but he also wants a great relationship with you. He wants to be able to tease you and make jokes until your belly hurts from laughing. He wants to come home to you and watch as you study, listening to your complaints about the work and lending you a helping hand. He wants to be the person you put your trust in, the person you rely on when things get tough. But he can’t have that and it’s tearing him apart.
“How is Y/N?”, he asks before Sunoo can leave. “We haven’t texted much this week.”
“Oh, she’s good, I guess. Stressed out and sleep deprived, but other than that fine.” Jungwon just nods, sending Sunoo an appreciative smile before turning back to the milk. Sunoo notices the change in his behavior, seeing right through him. Everyone with a working pair of eyes can clearly see what is going on between the two of you. “But she misses you.”
Jungwon wipes around at those words, eyes wide and mouth agape. “What?”
“She misses you. She talks about you everyday and how she can’t wait to see you again on Saturday.”, Sunoo smiles widely, grabbing his bag again and throwing it over his shoulder. “She seems to really like you, because I never heard her talk about someone as much as she talks about you.”
Jungwon doesn’t know what to answer. A million thoughts swirling around his brain.
“I really got to go now. Have a great day, Jungwon. We will hopefully see each other soon.” With that Sunoo turns around, disappearing in the big store and leaving Jungwon to stand there alone with his thoughts.
What is he supposed to do now?
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
There are signs of nervousness seen in your steps as you walk to the café. Everyone that’s passing you by can notice that. The way you pick the skin on your fingers, how your tongue darts out every five seconds to wet your lips and the obvious shaking of your limps. People could also think you are on hard drugs, but you quickly dismiss that thought.
You don’t even know what exactly makes you so nervous about today. Maybe it is because you haven’t heard from Jungwon and you’re scared that you did something wrong. Or maybe it is because you know this day will end your bet and you have no idea what will happen after it.
The uncertainty is really driving you insane.
You tried talking to Sunoo about it, explaining him your situation and having him understand you. But you quickly noticed how that did not work out, because all your best friend said was ‘Just confess to him. Tell him how you feel and how you don’t want to stop seeing him. What’s the worst that could happen?’
The worst is that you will end up making a fool out of yourself. You still hope that the least Jungwon wants is to stay friends with you and continue your weekly meetups. You don’t want to ruin that just because you feel nervous about him. It’s not like you do have feelings for him. It’s probably just a stupid little crush that will go away as soon as the two of you leave the getting to know phase.
Still, you stand in front of the café, a place you feel comfort and happiness in, and you can’t get yourself to actually open the door.
Seeing you through the window, Jungwon walks up to open the door for you. “Hey Y/N, come in.”
With hesitant steps you walk past him and almost immediately, the familiar feeling of tranquility washes over you. You take in the scent of fresh baked cake and newly brewed coffee, thinking that this could possibly be the last time you stand in here. And you notice the slight scent of Jungwon.
Every time you walked into the café you noticed a scent that you couldn’t recognize. Not a bad smell, just something that mingles with the normal scent of the café. Only last week when the two of you sat in the park together, you noticed that that scent belonged to him. And weirdly enough, it brought you comfort. Maybe it is because you associate it with the Jungwons’ workplace or maybe it is just Jungwon himself that makes you feel that way.
“Are you okay?”, he asks as he pulls out the chair - of the table you always sit at – for you to sit down.
“Yeah, I’m fine. What about you? Did you have a stressful week?” As you watch how Jungwon makes his way to the counter to prepare your coffee, you notice how you could never get sick of looking at him. Everyone with eyes sees Jungwon’s obvious attractiveness. His sharp features, the cat-like eyes, his silky brown hair, the wide shoulders, and the dimples. God, those dimples will kill you some day. You could look at him all day long and not get tired of seeing his face, of seeing his smile or the concentrated look on his face whenever he makes coffee. But not only does his appearance allure you, but his personality as well. The witty comments, the way his voice changes whoever he is talking to, his friendliness as he talks to customers. The way he leans down to talk to the children who come to the café, showing them a warm smile as he gifts them a free cupcake. The care he shows for the people he loves, even if it’s sometimes not as noticeable. The passion he carries for his job and the things he loves. And his mind. The thoughts and opinions he carries with him. The way he voices his feelings and tries to never hurt anyone with the things he says.
You could never get tired of that. You could never get tired of him.
“My week was good. The café is booming with new customers, so I have a lot to do. But I’m not complaining. I love how this place gets more and more recognition the more time passes by.” He walks back to you with a see-through cup in his hand that he puts down on the table in front of you.
“This is a Vanilla Latte. It’s not been on the menu for so long, I just added it a few weeks back. It is made of espresso, steamed milk, a little bit of fine foam and lastly vanilla syrup. It’s sweet, maybe he even a bit too sweet. But I thought since you kind of liked the Bómbon, this will be a good choice for you.”, he smiles, sitting down on the chair beside yours.
“What will happen if I don’t like it?”, you ask him, eyeing the coffee in front of you.
“Then you won the bet.”, he answers you, stating the obvious.
“No, I mean what will happen to you? Will you be disappointed?”
“Yeah.”, he says. “I think so, but there is nothing I can do to change that. Even though I put a lot of effort into making those coffees for you every week, it was still fun for me. And a way to practice my abilities. So yeah, I will be disappointed, but I will also be happy that you at least tried to understand me and my love for coffee.”
You nod at his words, taking them in. Part of you was afraid of taking a sip, just like the first week of your bet, but this time for a complete different reason. This time you aren’t afraid of trying something new. This time you are scared that whatever will happen after you take a sip, will change the relationship between you and Jungwon. Now you really want to like the coffee.
Your hand trembles as you reach out for the cup, but the warmth of it eases your nerves, even if it is just a little bit. You lift it to your lips and before thinking too much you take a sip, already used to this routine. Jungwon, as perse, watches you with wide, curious eyes. The hope of turning you into a coffee lover still lingers inside him.
“So, what are your final words?”, he asks after a few seconds.
“It’s definitely the best one you made so far. I really like how strong the vanilla flavor is.”, you answer, trying to end it on that.
“But?” He hears it in your voice and sees it in your face.
“I’m sorry, Jungwon. I just really don’t think coffee is for me. I am so thankful how hard you tried, and I could really see and taste the love and time you put into this. And I’m so proud of you and you should be too, because you have a real talent and make a lot of people happy with what you do.” You smile at him, putting the coffee down in front of him. “But I guess I will just stay with hot chocolate.”
A shy smile forms on Jungwons lips as he hears your kind words, and he can feel the heat crawling up his neck. “Thank you, Y/N. You don’t know how much your words mean to me. And don’t worry about not liking coffee. As you said, it’s just not for you. Even someone like me has to accept that there are actually people out there who don’t like coffee.”
There is something lingering in the air. Like the two of you desperately want to say something, but the words don’t want to come out. You feel the mood visibly shift into awkwardness, uncertainty, and maybe even longing. You can’t handle it. You can’t handle the mess of the feelings inside of you and the way Jungwon looks at you right now. His eyes shimmering with a feeling you can’t describe. He is looking at you like he can read you. Like you are open book to him, and he knows all the answers to the questions that circle around your mind.
It’s getting unbearable. You think you might break under his gaze and spill out every question that you don’t even have an answer for. And that’s not what you want. As long as you aren’t sure about things, you won’t talk to him about it.
So, instead you get up from your seat, earning a confused look from the brown-haired boy. “Are you leaving?”
“Yeah, sorry. I promised Sunoo to be home early so we can have a movie night.” You put on your jacket, grabbing your bag. “Thank you for everything Jungwon.” You send him a wave and a small smile before heading to the door.
“Wait!”, he calls out for you, making you turn around. “You won the bet. What about your prize?”
“I will get back to you for that one. See you, Jungwon.”
And before he can say anything else you are out the door, leaving him and taking half his heart with you.
☕ 5 ½ Affogato
In fact you did not get back to Jungwon. He can’t lie and say that he hasn’t been waiting every day, checking his phone regularly to see if you texted him. Even when he hears the door open, his head whips up just to be disappointed that it’s not you coming to the café.
When the first Saturday came around, Junwon felt weird seeing other customers in the café and not just you. He felt as if a part of him was missing. Somehow, he couldn’t get himself to stop thinking about you wherever he went.
You on the other hand spent most of the last days in your room. Except for the times you had to go to class. You keep on mulling over the things in your head, trying to figure out your feelings. It doesn’t make sense to you that you have feelings so strongly for someone you just met. You thought that the feelings would go away as soon as you didn’t see Jungwon anymore. Thinking that it was just a small crush. But the more time passes and the longer you go without seeing him, the more you long for him, the more you miss him and the more you have this wrenching feeling inside of your chest. When Saturday came along, you didn’t know what to do with yourself. You wanted to go to the café, surprise Jungwon and tell him all the thoughts which have been plaguing your mind. But you couldn’t. There is a part of you that still isn’t sure if what you feel is genuine and a part of you is afraid of rejection. Just because you feel that way doesn’t mean he will. You yourself have doubts on how fast those feelings blossomed. There is a huge possibility that he just did all that for the bet. For the sheer satisfaction of being right. Of proving a point.
All of this didn’t go unnoticed by your best friend. Sunoo has been worried about you ever since you came back from the last time you met Jungwon. He noticed that something went wrong and as he tried to talk to you about it, all you did was dismiss him, telling him you didn’t want to talk about it.
But Sunoo is sick of it. Sick of seeing you so sad and he decides that something has to change.
He ignores your sounds of complaint as he enters your room, muttering for him to leave as you hide yourself under your blanket. “Get up.” His tone is stern, the complete opposite from his normal sweet and friendly voice. It makes you peak your head out of your blanket to look at him.
“Why?”, you ask, making him sigh. Sunoo sits down at the edge of your bed, pulling your blanket down.
“I want you to stop drowning yourself in self-pity and instead get up and do something against whatever it is your feeling.” You sit up, knees against your chest, wrapping your arms securely around them. “Stop being so oblivious and open your eyes. I don’t know what exactly you’re going through, since you won’t tell me, so I’m just going to assume. You are in love with Jungwon, but you are scared. Not only that he won’t like you back, but you are scared of love itself. You fear the potential heart break that it can leave. You think that if you feel this worse already even though you are not even dating, you don’t want to know what it feels when you actually get your heart broken.”
Sunoo takes a deep breath, running a hand through his hair and thinking carefully about his next words. “But that is not how life works, Y/N. If you go through life, afraid of everything that might hurt you, you won’t live. You will hold yourself back from opportunities, from new doors opening. You will stay where you are right now, not moving an inch forward. And believe me that’s not how you want to live your life. So please, for the love of God, go to the poor boy and confess your feelings. I met him at the store the other day and when I told him that you miss him, you should have seen the way his face lit up. He is head over heels for you. He closed his god damn store on Saturdays for you just so that you could feel comfortable while meeting him. He researched coffee and spent a lot of his time making them just to find something that you will like. And when you had a bad day because of the college stress he spent the whole night on the phone with you, making jokes and trying to get you to laugh. That’s not something someone does just because. Jungwon does those things because he likes you.”
“You really think so?”, you ask, your voice small and showing all the doubts that gathered over the days.
“I know so.”, Sunoo answers, squeezing one of your knees softly. “Go get your man.”
♡❀˖⁺. ༶ ⋆˙⊹❀♡
You never thought you would be in a situation like this. It almost feels like you’re in a movie.
The way you run to the café, 5 minutes before it closes, just so you could catch Jungwon before he leaves. The wind blowing your hair through the air and the flowers of the cherry blossom trees, swirling around, painting the scene even more dramatic than it already is.
By the time you arrive at the café, you are out of breath and covered by the pink flowers. But you don’t care, you storm into the small building with determination.
Jungwon stands with his back turned behind the counter, washing the dishes since there is no one in the café anymore. “I’m sorry.”, he says, back still turned to you. “I’m closing now. You can comeback tomorrow and I can make you some delicious coffee.”
You smile at his words, walking up to him. “You can’t even make an exception for me?” At the sound of your voice, Jungwon turns around. Forgetting that his hands are still wet and drenching his apron and the floor with it. But that is not important. What is important is that you actually stand in front of him.
“Y/N? What are you doing here?”
“Well, I won the bet. I came to claim my prize.” A smile graces your lips, but Jungwon doesn’t know what he means. He doesn’t know anything. It’s like his brain stopped working the moment he heard your voice.
“Yeah, right.”, voice breaking in nervosity. “What is it you want me to do?”
“I want you to go on a date with me.”
“What?” Jungwon can’t believe his own ears. Did you really just say that?
“I want you to go on a date with me.”, you repeat. “Over the past few weeks, I noticed myself slowly falling for you. I didn’t tell you because I was scared. I was terrified of getting hurt, to the point where I thought that shutting you out and denying my feelings for you was the best way to deal with this situation. But I quickly got to see that it only caused the exact opposite to happen. I started missing you so much that I felt like a piece of me was not with me anymore. I realized that I can’t live like this. I can’t keep running away from things the moment I get scared and finally face my fears.” You smile at him, tears forming in your eyes.
“I like you, Jungwon. I like you so much, it’s scary. But even considering all this, I want you in my life. No, I need you in my life. And you may not feel the same thing, but I can’t go on knowing I never tried.”
Junwon doesn’t know what to say. No words want to leave his mouth. So instead of saying anything, he walks around the counter and stops right in front of you. He pulls you closer to him and the next thing you know you feel his lips softly pressing against your own.
You melt into him, gripping his shoulders tightly as you kiss him back. You get lost in his scent, in the softness of his lips and the warmth inside of your heart. And you know that this is something you could get used to.
“How about we have it now?”, he asks you after breaking the kiss. His hand tugging a stray strand of hair behind your ear.
“Start what now?”
“Our date.”, he states, letting go of you and walking back behind the counter. “I have the perfect idea. Sit down please.”
You do as he says, watching him work on something. Jungwon joins you not long after, placing a big bowl of ice cream in front of you.
“This is an Affogato. It’s not really coffee, more of a dessert. But it is vanilla ice cream with espresso shots. I got this idea last week and thought you might want to try it out.” Jungwon grabs a spoon himself and together you take a bite of the dessert he prepared.
“Thoughts?”, he asks, the situation way too familiar to the both of you.
“Meh, it’s fine. But I think I will just stick to normal ice cream.” He laughs at your words, a bright cheerful laugh, that fills your whole body with joy.
“I really thought that could be the last thing to change your mind and make you fall in love with coffee anyway.”, he says, a small pout adoring his lips.
You can’t help it but lean over and place a gentle peck on his lips. “Well, I didn’t fall in love with coffee, but I sure as hell fell for someone else.”
You watch as his cheeks turn into a soft shade of red, adoring the way he looks when he’s shy.
“And I sure as hell fell for you too, Y/N. More than you can imagine.”
Bonus
☕4 years later
“I’m sorry, we’re closed.”, you say as you hear the door of the café open. Busy washing the dishes, you didn’t even look over your shoulder.
“You can’t even make an exception for me?”, you hear a familiar voice say. Turning around you are met with the face of your boyfriend, flowers in his hands. This scene seeming way too familiar to you.
“Jungwon!”, you exclaim, drying your hands and walking over to him. “What are you doing here? You are supposed to be resting. I thought you were sick.”
Jungwon shows you a sheepish grin. One of hands reaching up to rub his neck nervously. “Well, about that. I may or may not have lied to you about being sick.”
“What?”, you say, a frown forming on your face. “Why would you lie to me about that?”
Jungwon lays the flowers down on the counter before reaching one of his hands into his pocket. “I had to get something.”
Looking down at his hands, you see him pull out a small velvet box. And before you know, Jungwon is already kneeling down on one knee.
“Y/n, we’ve known each other for the past 4 years and those have been the best years of my life. Before I met you, I felt alone, completely distant from the world. But when you came into my life, suddenly everything made sense. You accepted my love for coffee and even tried to love it as well, which we know didn’t quite work out as planned. You gave me the life I always wanted and now it’s my turn to give you something in return. So, will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
Tears stream down your face as you look at the man before you. The man that has done nothing but give you all his love for the past four years. The man you would do anything for. And the man you want to the spend the rest of your life with.
So, there is really no other answer to his question, but…
“Yes. Yes, of course I will marry you.”

“jungwon what is this?” y/n asked with a laugh.
the boy had been covering her eyes with his hands since they arrived at the entrance of the park. his other arm wrapped around her waist, keeping her close as they walked.
“patience, baby. you’ll see when we get there.”
y/n huffed but still let him guide her through trees. the smell of the fresh grass and the crisp evening air was refreshing. she couldn’t remember the last time she had stopped to enjoy simple things like this. she had been so busy with school that she didn’t have time to.
jungwon knew this, which is why they were in the park this late. he had a surprise for her. jungwon kept his arm around y/n as they walked down the concrete trail.
after a few minutes, they made a sharp turn and y/n could feel the ground beneath her feet go from hard concrete to something soft and bumpy.
“are we on the grass?” she asked, her eyes still covered.
“yeah, we’re almost there.”
they took a few more steps forward.
“ok! we’re here!” jungwon said.
y/n stopped in her tracks. she wasn’t exactly sure where here was.
“are you ready?” jungwon asked. she could feel his breath on her ear and it made her shiver.
“yes! the suspense is starting to piss me off.” y/n huffed.
“ok ok fine!” he laughed. “on the count of 3 ok?”
1!
2!
3!
when jungwon lifted his hand from her eyes, she first had to squint to adjust to the light, well, lights in front of her.
hundreds of fairy lights were wrapped around every tree trunk and branch that surrounded the small clearing that jungwon led her to. in between the trees was a large blanket laid out on the grass. a bouquet of roses and a wicker basket sat in the middle of it with more rose petals forming a heart around them. the setup was simple but beautiful. to think that jungwon came out here and set this up all by himself just for her… it made her tear up.
“jungwon this is- how did you-” she couldn’t even get the words out.
“well you’ve been working so hard lately so I thought you would need a break. and I know how much you like picnics so I thought this would be perfect.”
y/n turned in jungwon’s arms to face him. the warm tint from the lights made him glow like an angel before her eyes. what did she do to deserve him?
he watched y/n watch him with glossy eyes.
“so…” jungwon smiled, putting his dimples on full display. “do you like it?”
y/n pulled him in by his collar, locking her lips with his in a soft kiss. his grip on her waist tightened as he turned his head slightly, deepening the kiss. it wasn’t until she felt a slight burn in her chest that y/n pulled away.
she rested her forehead against his. “I love it jungwon. I love you.”
the boy smiled and squeezed her waist lightly. “I love you too.”

Yang jungwon was everything- smart, popular, handsome, the reputated class leader who had the best grades and the highest amount of admirers. But if there was anything your best friend was bad at, then that was him being so dumb at acknowledging your romantic feelings for him. He’s been your best buddy since the first year of high school and despite your numerous attempts at conveying your love for him like asking him to be your prom date, leaving anonymous letters inside his locker, always insisting on going out with him on weekends, this boy was so oblivious as to how you truly felt about him.
although these failed events had left you frustrated many times, you learned how to suppress your disappointment and act like nothing happened infront of jungwon. You were grateful and glad that you still hung out with him most of the day, however, when bees like fangirls would swarm around him with confessions in the hallway, you were awfully ticked off and all you felt like doing was tearing him away from them by claiming him as yours. However, love wasn’t always in two directions and he wasn’t “yours” so you watched with clenched fists from a distance as the most popular and prettiest girl in your college supposedly asked him out today.
She was everything you weren’t- the hot topic of the school, the president of the dance club, the teacher’s favourite girl with such a pretty face and goddess like figure. Although you hated to admit it, she was perfect in every way and this fact only made your blood boil even more as you watched her take steps closer to your beloved jungwon. She had a sweet smile on her face, and let her flowy hair loose to get his attention. You were standing at the doorway of the classroom, facing jungwon’s back so you couldn’t see how he was reacting, but the dread of him accepting her proposal because she was the one everyone swooned over in campus made your stomach clench. Thus, unable to witness this painful scenario by yourself, you shut your eyes closed and walked out of the college building angrily.
Throughout the whole day, you avoid jungwon. It was not that he’s done anything to you, but the pain of your unrequited feelings was eating you away. So you wanted some space to yourself cause you knew seeing his beautiful face that you so dearly loved today would make you tear up and the last thing you wanted was to create a drama inside school campus and lose your friendship by blurting out something insensitive.
jungwon makes several attempts to talk to you, though. From coming to the cafeteria with your favourite juice in his hand to have lunch with you to calling out your name in the hallway that you pretended to not hear because you had “earphones” on, he tried everything. But it wasn’t helping him, cause you found every excuse to pretend like he didn’t exist before you. Heck, you didn’t even know his answer to that proposal but the dreadful gossips of your classmates shipping them and swooning over the confession made you feel so sick that you couldn’t help but react this way.
“Y/n! Wait!” You hear a familiar soothing voice call out to you as you walk back home alone from your tiring day at college after the sun has set. “Don’t ignore me hey?” Jungwon yells out now, panting after you and finally grabbing your bag to halt you.
“Atleast tell me what I’ve done wrong, my y/n.” He says in a soft apologetic voice and the way he addresses you as “my.” makes you gulp immediately. Although it was a casual way your best friend and you addressed eachother whenever you were mad, you couldn’t help but feel the butterflies of love swarm back inside your stomach again. You were in love with yang jungwon, and everyday you were reminded of this warped reality.
“..Nothing happened jungwon. I just don’t feel good.” You brush his hand aside saying so, locking eyes with him in the process. His calm, starry eyes and perfectly carved angelic face making you gulp from familiar surge of feelings crawling back inside your throat. Yang jungwon was the epitome of comfort in your life ever since he stepped in it. His caring nature, gentle voice, selfless personality and his dimpled smile won your heart in seconds since the first day you’ve seen him. And your love obviously deepened from the amount of times you spent with him as your best friend. Cause it was impossible to spend everyday with him, without wishing to permanently make him your everyday, every second and every lifetime.
For the last three years, you guys have gone through the highs and lows together. Amusement park dates, laughing at endless inner jokes, sneaking out together to take midnight strolls and pulling pranks on classmates, watching a parade of movies together, doing assignments at eachother’s homes and being one another’s constant support system. You couldn’t help it if one day your heart started yearning for more of that touch to linger on your skin, more of that face closer to yours, more of that voice ringing and reverberating inside every cell of your damn body.
your conscience is brought back to reality from your magical time dreaming when you get shivers from feeling his finger brush against yours. You forgot for a split second that the boy you were dreaming about was right beside you and now, he was scanning your fingers with his.
“You’re so cold y/n.” Jungwon whispers gently before intertwining his hands with yours in the empty streets. His hands were warm and big, and made yours feel so incredibly warm and comfortable.
Before you could protest and take out your hands, he turns you around in his direction, pulling you closer to his chest whilst your hands were still locked. His hazy and admiration filled gaze scans your eyes and face and he begins to redraw one of his hands to take off his jacket for you.
“You know how much you mean to me. So please don’t ignore me cause no matter how cheesy it sounds..you’re the one..person in this world I can’t be without.” The boy before you stutters with rosy cheeks, as he drapes his jacket over you to keep you warm. His jacket smelled strongly of vanilla and sweetness, just like his presence and closeness right now.
“But..you’re gonna be cold too.” You say concerned, to which he-
scoots in closer to your body, giggling and lacing his arms around your waist underneath the jacket and pressing your bodies together with a half suppressed laughter.
“This way we’re both gonna be warm, ey?” he chuckles cutely.
Damn. That laughter was so beautiful you could swear you just fell in love with him even harder.
Now that there was only centimetres apart between your faces, you could feel his paced breaths landing on your cheeks and heating you up from within. Your heart was pounding abnormally loud against your ribcage and overcome by the temptation and longing for him that you were fighting back all these years, you lift your hands up to cup his cheek. Maybe tonight, with one move you would end your life in seconds or maybe you’d fix it well forever, but right now you were willing to risk it all because you couldn’t think straight anyway.
Beginning to trace your fingers against his jaw, your breath hitches even more from the way you feel him twitch wherever your touch lands. Your thumb caresses his chin and finally, you stop it on his soft lips and stroke the sensitive area.
“There’s another place that feels cold jungwon.” you confess, bringing that same finger now to your lips, indicating it to the boy standing before you to tempt him and pass your request.
Jungwon freezes momentarily with wide eyes in disbelief at first. But soon, he gives you the shyest smile you’ve ever seen before proceeding to reassure you rather smugly.
“Mhm I think I’ve been dying to help that.”
And with that, those plush, soft lips of his come crashing down to yours. You part your lips in anticipation, and within a second he intertwines his lips with yours and starts tasting your addicting sweetness. Tilting his face and stroking your back before pressing you inwards towards him, he sucks your sugary lips as you wrap your hands around his neck to feel him deeply and passionately. He kisses you again and again, cupping your jaw and tracing your neck with his fingers delicately, momentarily looking into your eyes admiringly before going back to drench you in his mouth once again.
If you had any fear or misconception left, all of it dissolved with his saliva on your lips. You knew with the fierce and desperate yet calm way he kissed you, just how much he wanted and loved you back.
———-
After many rounds of kissing eachother in that empty chilly street, keeping the night sky stars as witness, he lifts you up on his back to give you a piggy back ride home. You guys both laugh at your shared moments of intimacy a few minutes ago, but his ears were still red from the dizzying impact.
It was crazy how he could be so weakly shy and so strongly romantic within the span of a simple second.
“Ooooh look at the calm and composed leader being so shy right now. If only our classmates would see this lovesick side of you huh.” You tease him while being on his back, pecking his ears and neck lightly to watch him shiver and chuckle mischievously against his skin.
“..stop..y/n. Or else I’m really dropping you.” He tries to threaten you but ends up in a defeated laughter and tickles your leg that was wrapped around his torso.
You spend the rest of the way, laughing and being goofy, kissing him some more on his cheek and making fun of him and at the end both of you hum slow love songs together like young and heartfelt teenagers experiencing true and wild love for the first time.
♪” You came into my life with no warning. Like a flash of light, and I was doing fine but as you came in, I watch my future rewrite. It's just you and me. With the world beneath our feet, we can see for miles up here, we can go wild up here, It's just me and you. See, I like you a lot. You make me buzz like an astronaut. These feels I can't shake off, I'm in your orbit and I will never drop. It’s just me and you with the world beneath our feet.” ♪
—————
After fifteen long minutes, you finally reach home and as soon as you close the door behind you, jungwon sweeps you off your feet and carries you all princess style on his arms while giving you a playful grin.
“I think we have scores from before to settle y/n, don’t you think love?” He teases, now dashing towards your bedroom and spinning you in circles to make you dizzy and laugh some more at your helplessness.
But the moment you reach infront of your bed, before he can drop you he trips from your continuous movements and you fall right into the bed. Him on top of you, you on bottom under his sturdy cover and your foreheads bang with eachother in a loud snap.
“Ow owh owh JUNGWON!!” You whine squealing in both excitement and pain simultaneously.
“Oh no. I can fix your pain tho.” He tries to flirt (but obviously fails bc he’s too cute to flirt) and immediately begins kissing your forehead gently. He tucks the loose strands of hair behind your ear dotingly and now presses your forehead together and closes his eyes, the move that you involuntarily follow.
“I love you y/n. I love you as my best friend and now..I love you more as my girlfriend.” He chuckles but keeps a serious tone and you feel every bit of his genuine love echo inside your body and send shivers down your spine.
“I love you more yang jungwon.” You whisper, lifting his face up and looking inside his sparkling eyes, etching into them your confessions that bear no lies. His skin was your canvas and your kisses were art, and now? You knew you needed to use the brush, your lips to depict your painting of your fairytale love.
You connect your lips with those sweet and cushion-like lips of his, tasting his sugary mouth and letting yourself drown entirely in the way he felt and tasted. Intoxicating like wine, syrupy as honey, pleasant like summer breeze and addicting like drug. You feel your senses alight like fireworks the moment his wet lips trace down from your lips to your cheek and neck, as he begins sucking and kissing all the sensitive areas of your collarbone and shoulders.
Jungwon only stops when he hears you gasp and that’s exactly when he looks up at you and connects his gaze with your dreamy one.
“Yang jungwon. If only you knew how much I loved you all this while.” You confess, caressing the mole above his jaw.
“And if only you knew how much it was reciprocated.” He smiles adoringly pressing a gentle peck on your lips.
But as a response instead of your words, you part your lips again to let his in and you drown yourself in his taste again. And this time..your whole body shivers as you feel his tongue slide inside your mouth and his hands hovering above your waist and tracing your bare flesh underneath the material of your cloth. You pull him closer on top of you and now, he presses your wrists against the pillow above your head as he explores deep inside your mouth and claims each spot as his own with his intoxicating tongue.
Maybe tomorrow you were gonna walk up to the college as his girlfriend and get to know from your classmates how jungwon had rejected the girl yesterday and already told her how much he loved you and had only eyes for you. But right now, there was nothing more you wanted to feel than him kissing you..everywhere.
Yang jungwon really made you feel everything. Comfort, love, happiness, peace, promise and most of all..magic. And right now you knew there was no one else in this world who could make you feel this loved and appreciated other than him.
And right now, you knew there was nothing in this world you wanted to feel and kiss other than,
Those sweet and promising,
love dripping and addicting,
cherry lips of his. 💋

“I brought snacks!”
“I baked cookies!”
You and Jungwon stared at each other, excited smiles on your faces. “Come in please!”
You opened the door wider to let Jungwon in, grabbing the snacks so he could take off his shoes and coat. He quickly got it done, taking the snacks back before you pulled him into the living room.
“Did you decide on a movie already?”
You shook your head. “I thought it might be best if we did it together! So both of us will enjoy it.”
“Now.” Jungwon stared at you. “I told you I will enjoy whatever you choose.”
“I knowww,” you whined. “But I won't take risks with that.”
“You're cute.” He smiled as he plopped down on the couch. “Just pick one.”
“Okay.” You pouted but you sat down next to Jungwon, grabbing the remote. “Scream no if you don't like it.”
Jungwon just shook his head as he pulled you closer to give you a soft kiss onto your temple. “I promise I will love it, okay? Just pick one.”
You sighed, but you did as he said. It didn't take you long to find one you liked, but you were still nervous. At least until you looked towards Jungwon who had a big smile on his face. “I like that one.”
“Oh!” You couldn't help but smile along as you pressed play, snuggling closer to your boyfriend. “I guess you were right then.”
“Told you so,” he grinned as he pulled you closer, one arm wrapped around your shoulder. “I kept watching it with my grandma.”
“We should watch it with her next time.”
The room fell into a comfortable silence. You enjoyed Jungwons warmth around you, happily accepting the christmas cookies he handed you from time to time or melting when his lips found the top of your head. This was exactly how you had always imagined christmas. Of course, you enjoyed spending time with your friends too, the chaotic visits to christmas markets or falling down while trying ice skating. But you also longed for those quiet, peaceful moments, that filled you with so much joy without needing any words. And you felt so lucky that Jungwon felt the same, that he provided just what you needed.
“I love you,” you whispered into the silence of the room.
“Hmm?”
“I love you.” You turned around to face Jungwon. “So much.”
His face instantly lit up, his dimples overly visible on his face. “You love me.”
You stared at him. “Yeah, don't bother saying it back. No worries.”
“Noooo.” He laughed before he pulled you closer again. “Of course I love you too, y/n. This is just the first time you said it.”
Oh. Now that you thought about it… he was right. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he beamed, suddenly giving you kiss after kiss. “I love you I love you I love you.”
“I love you moooost.”
Jungwon shook his head, suddenly very serious. “No you don't.”
“I do. I said it first, remember?”
“Doesn't mean it's true. You don't.”
You wanted to disagree, but god- you're boyfriend looked so cute while pouting. And his soft eyes… “Okay fine. I don't.”
“Thank you!” He grinned before he gave you another kiss. “Good that you know.”
“But you don't either!” You stared at him. “It's equal.”
“Do I get a kiss if I agree?”
“Yes.” Now it was your turn to grin.
“Okay. It's equal.”
You giggled, even more as Jungwon started to pout when all he got was a peck on the cheek. “Now. Not fair.”
“You never specified.” You pushed some loose strands of hair behind his ear. “And besides, you should focus on the movie.”
“I already know the movie though.”
“You already know my kisses too.”
“I don't.” He smirked. “Every kiss is different.”
You didn't know what to say to that, your face getting covered in a deep red tint. “Ah.”
Jungwon moved closer, causing a small hiccup in your breath. “Or are you bored.”
“No!” You said that louder than planned, “No… I couldn't be. But the movie-”
Jungwon huffed. “Sure.”
His arm went back around your shoulder while his focus went towards the movie. Hmm. You knew he wasn't really upset, but you didn't like this either. You missed his kisses.
“You're not focusing on the movie.”
“I already know the movie.”
“I see.” You could hear the smirk in his voice. “But you wanted to see it, didn't you?”
You pouted. “Well I did… but I can multitask!”
“Can you? You seemed a bit distracted earlier.” He chuckled, his hand drawing some circles onto your arm.
“I-” You let out a few swear words in your mind. “I wasn't.”
Jungwon didn't answer, so you turned your head to look at him. His eyes were focused on the movie, but the corner of his lips were slightly shaking, as if he tried not to laugh.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m watching the movie, just like you wanted me to.”
You pouted even more. “You're mean. I won't share my cookies with you anymore.”
Jungwon gasped, his free hand grabbing his chest. “Not the cookies!”
You glared at him. “No kisses for a week.”
“A week?”
“A month.”
“Oh?”
“A YEAR.”
Jungwon just laughed, his eyes not moving away from the screen. “As if you could handle that.”
“Oh I can. Just watch me.”
He hummed, his arm pulling you closer until you felt a pair of lips on your cheek. “I will.”
“Good.”
Another kiss. “Stop pouting please.”
“Looks like you can't handle the no kissing rule.”
“A kiss on the cheek doesn't count.” His words were followed by another one.
“Yeah it does. You're failing.”
“And you're smiling again.” Oh. He was right.
“No I’m not.”
“You are.”
You turned around to face Jungwon in the same moment as he wanted to kiss your cheek again, resulting in a ‘real’ kiss this time, lips onto lips. “You kissed me.”
He shook his head. “No no no. You turned your head, you kissed me.”
“No I didn't!”
“What if we…” Jungwon was lost in a thought. “We both lost. At the same time.”
You wanted to disagree, but something stopped you. “Will I get my kisses if I agree?”
“As much as you want,” he smiled. “The movie is almost over anyway.”
“Okay.” You grinned at him, your face close to his. “I agree.”
Jungwon beamed, his eyes almost sparkling as he overcame the little distance left between you and gave you a soft kiss onto your lips.

LEVEL 000: SINGLE PRINGLE NOT READY TO MINGLE
You’ve got a feeling the universe might just hate you. Just a teeny tiny hunch.
Today’s supposed to be a fresh start for you. New job, new coworkers, new outfit -- which you totally didn’t spend two months’ worth of your salary to purchase, no way.
So then why in the name of Eren Jaeger’s left buttcheek are you sprinting towards the train station in three-inch heels?
It’s your first day at work, you can’t afford to be late. “If i can just run a little faster-” you wheeze, frantically swinging your arms. A hiss of the doors and you’re in. “Nice, I’ll be on time at this rate,” you think to yourself. It’s the morning train, so you opt to grasp a handle dangling from the bars overhead. Relief washes over your body, relaxing your overworked calf muscles. Nothing can stop you today.
Yet as your eyes skim across a manga advertisement, you can't help but clench your free hand.
I hope no one finds out this time.
Less than ten minutes later, you find yourself in a waiting room. The door swings open, and a tall woman steps in. She doesn’t seem much older than you, yet she exudes the confidence you’ve only dreamed of having since middle school. You can't help but admire the way everything about her screams elegance and professionalism. That would’ve helped three months ago, you muse internally.
“Nice to meet you. I’m your supervisor, and I’ll be your guide for the next few weeks. We work in the same department.” She offers her hand, a graceful smile  spreading across her face. “I hope we get along well.”
You grip her palm in a firm handshake, while secretly scanning her gorgeous face. “Let’s work hard together!’
Your supervisor leads you into the hallway, briefing you as she strides along. Thoroughly engrossed in your new mentor’s advice, you only realise someone else is in the corridor when your shoulder brushes theirs ever so slightly. Yet you continue walking on after a quick apology, attention returning to -
Wait.
You swivel around, disregarding your supervisor’s confused mumble. “Yang Jungwon?!”
The once-fading back of your victim pauses, head lolling to his side. “Y/n?”
Your mind races in overdrive, thoughts scrambling in your head as you force your mouth to say something at all. “H-hey, Jungwon! It’s um, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? Last time we met was in middle school!” Your hand lifts in a shaky wave, heart skipping at the glimpse of his familiar smirk. “It’s so unexpected! What are the odds that we’d be working here together?” Avoiding the curious gazes of your supervisor and Jungwon’s colleague, you continue rambling on. “Uhh…let’s catch up over dinner! Don’t be late!” You mentally slap yourself to shut your mouth, and breeze past the two men. Phew, that was close. You cannot let the only person who knows your darkest secret go free. Luckily you’d spotted him on your first day, or who knows-
“By the way, are you tabling at Comic Con?”
You swear you were one word away from a heart attack. “H-haha, very funny. You know I don’t do that stuff, why would you ask that? Bye now!”
“…I’m screwed.”
Eleven hours later, you find yourself at a nearby 24-hour arcade, your focus on the sparkly joystick loosened by years of manhandling.
“The bait’s been set. Passing it over to you now.” You swap places with Jungwon to finally chug your can of Calpis. “Mmmm, that’s the stuff,” you sigh happily, never tearing your eyes away from the screen, where Jungwon’s doing up the finishing touches for the claw machine. He’s always been better at these things than you, but you’d like to believe it’s because he spent more time in arcades than you did when you were kids. You were more into stupid otome games with cheesy endings.
“Got it. Told you it was possible,” Jungwon announces, the collection door swinging open to reveal a fluffy dino stuffie. “Seriously, after all these years you still need my help?”
You let out a derisive snort as you seized the plushie from his hands. “Well, you haven’t changed much either, have you? Nearly told everyone I’m an otaku on my first day. I do have a death wish, mind you.”
His smirk really is the same, you realise, as his dimples emerge as prominently as you remember. It’s actually quite endearing, though you’ll never tell him that. ‘Sorry, but I couldn’t have known you’re a closet otaku now? You used to be so blatant about it. ‘Ohmagawsh have you seen the new nyeh nyeh nyeh? The love interests are so hot I’d lick their abs.’ That’s how you sounded like, you know?”
“Stop, someone could hear us and I can say goodbye to my job!”
“Relax, no one’s here. You never used to care so much about people’s opinions, though,” he quips, reaching out to grab a piece of fried chicken. “So? What’s the tragic backstory behind your pathetically closeted fangirling?”
Your elbow accidentally collides with Jungwon’s ribs, nearly pushing him out of the high chair. “I was only like that with you. And it’s…a long story.”
“It’s also a long night.” That was how Jungwon was. Always there, always listening.
You have to take a swig of your Calpis to steel yourself, after all it’s not a story you like to tell. But he’s your best friend, and he’s the only one you’d trust with a fraction of your secret.
“Somewhere during university, I guess the pressure to be a…normal student was pretty high. So I decided to put my uh, unorthodox hobbies into the rhetorical closet?” You pause, lips pinching as you try to avoid his questioning look. Somehow you can’t bring yourself to tell him the whole truth. A part of you begs to confide in him, because you just know he’s the only one who might understand. But…
Jungwon watches you, an emotion you can’t pinpoint brewing in his sharp eyes. “Is that all?”
“Y-yeah. It’s a pretty good reason if you ask me.” Your tone is more defensive than you mean it to be, considering this is meant to be no more than a casual catch-up session with an old friend.
He shrugs, stare boring right through your soul. It’s funny how the guy you haven’t met for half a decade is the one who knows you best, even better than yourself. “I don’t believe you.”
And you crack. It’s surprising, really, that after so many months of holding yourself together it is Jungwon who becomes the catalyst to your spiral. Your vision melts into a blurry kaleidoscope of colours as the words fall from your lips. You tell him everything. About you falling so deeply in love with your boyfriend of three years that you plucked up the courage to tell him about your less-than-perfect lifestyle. About him asking for a breakup in a matter of minutes after the confession. About him telling everyone at your workplace, about people you once considered friends pretending you don’t exist, about being so openly mocked you have no choice but to resign and escape from a nightmare you know was created by your own two hands. And you know telling Yang Jungwon about your dirty laundry isn’t going to turn back time, isn’t going to bring your old life back, but you tell him anyway because it feels safe and right somehow. He feels safe and right.
He always has.
When your world stops spinning and you return to reality, you find yourself sinking your nails into the plushie, eyes stinging slightly, and Jungwon’s hand is on your back, palm rubbing circles into your back. You’ve gotta admit, it feels better than you thought it would. It coaxes more out of you, words you didn’t know were in you before. “I swore off telling anyone I date about being an otaku. Saves me so much more effort and heartbreak.”
He raises his eyebrows, a thin crease forming across his forehead. “What about finding an otaku partner? Saved you the heartache.”
The question instantly sobers you up, your back straightening as if you weren’t on the verge of sobbing your eyeballs out a moment ago. “Hey, that’s just weird! Besides, I’d get zero attention from them.”
“That’s rich coming from you.”
The conversation evolves into something more lighthearted, and it’s like the five years between you two was never there to begin with. You spend the rest of the night basking in the waves of nostalgia, reliving the freedom of your childhood.
Hours later, Jungwon checks his wristwatch. “It’s late, I’ll walk you home. We still have work in the morning.”
The walk to your apartment is silent, save for the whistling of the cool night breeze in the city streets. Jungwon’s footsteps are silent - he walks just like a cat, you conclude after watching him slink along your side.
“Thanks for tonight, Yang.”
“Anytime, L/n.”
You continue soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, knowing tomorrow will be a hectic work day. Such a night is hard to come by, but maybe with Jungwon around, things’ll be more fun?
“…me?”
“Hm?” You turn to ask him what he said, but he beats you to it.
“What about me?”
You stare at him in confusion. “What about…you?”
“You said you wouldn’t tell your partner about being an otaku. Then what about me as a partner? I’d help you clear stages in games whenever you needed, I’d support you at conventions, and I wouldn’t judge you for your interests. And while we date, I’ll teach you how to not screw up future dates. You know, some sort of friends with benefits, except the benefits aren’t the usual…you know. You can treat me as practice for relationships. Dump me whenever you find someone you actually like.” Somehow, his face remains clear of any signs of embarrassment as he oh-so boldly states something that shouldn’t seem as simple as he makes it sound.
His proposal shocks you, no doubt. He’s never shown any interest in you romantically, as far as you can remember, so he can’t possibly be hitting on you right now. Besides, Yang Jungwon is a level-headed person, and his offer doesn’t seem so bad the more you think about it.
You reach out to grip his hand in a firm handshake, watching as Jungwon fails to hide the satisfied grin spreading across his face. You’ve got a feeling your face is mirroring his too. “Deal.”
And henceforth, your whirlwind otaku romance begins.

LEVEL 001: MEET THE HOMIES
You’d think getting a partner would be a life-changing experience that completely shook your world, but Jungwon just wasn’t acting like it was a big deal. You, on the other hand…
Embarrassing as it was, you were hiding from him. Who knows why. It was as though last night was a secret you had to take to your grave.
So here you are, crouched under a table while Jungwon and his friends are messing with their Switches over lunch.
Since you aren’t too far away from their table, you can catch snippets of his conversation with his gaming buddies. And as you stare a little longer, the sudden realisation hits you: you know those guys. They lived in your neighbourhood too, went to the same school, played hundreds of games with you and Jungwon too.
Kim Sunoo, the one whose name Jungwon used to call with more excitement than you’d ever seen before. He was older than you by a year, and he was the reason you and Jungwon started gaming. Every inch of his house was covered in anime posters, Genshin cosplays, full sets of manga volumes and action figurines. Plus, he had a treasure trove of a game collection that lined every wall in his house, something that still amazed you. Apparently, he’d gotten the money through cosplay wig commissions or some voice acting gig (the dude had a honeyed croon every fangirl could swoon for). Cunning, hardworking and motivated. You could see him write those on his resume.
Then there was the dude who hulked over your…boyfriend and Sunoo. Nishimura Riki. If you recalled correctly, Riki was like a little brother to Jungwon, who would take him anywhere and everywhere. His parents owned a dance studio, and Riki had put his skills to good use. Cosplay thirst traps were all your feeds consisted of, and you’d stumbled across Riki’s account one day, featuring the tall boy in a maid outfit. By the looks of it, he worked here. The apron gave it away.
Just how much did you miss?
“Yah! That’s the third time you missed a shot today. And you never miss!” you hear Sunoo whine. “Who are you and what have you done with my talented dongsaeng?”
Riki snickers “Hyung, he’s distracted. Look at him. He can’t focus.” He leans towards Jungwon, a meaningful smile curling on his face. “He logged on late last night, didn’t he? I bet he went on a date.”
Jungwon’s fingers slipped.
“AAAAAAAH JUNGWON-AH WHAT DID YOU DO?!” Sunoo’s wails fill the cafe, earning a hasty shush from Jungwon. “Honestly, you guys are so dramatic. Is it so unbelievable?”
“Ah, but hyung, this is different. You’ve been single your whole life cause you can’t get over-”
“Shut up.”
You hear Jungwon exhale, fingers fiddling with the power button of his switch. “Look, it’s not like that okay? She and I are just dating till she gets an actual boyfriend.”
A pause. Then hysterical laughter begins to echo through the small cafe. “You’ve got to be kidding me, Won,” Sunoo wheezes, slapping his knee so hard you hear the smack ringing in your ears. “You of all people should know these things never end the way you expect it to. Aren’t you supposed to be a shoujo plot expert?”
“What do you even expect me to know? This isnt real life!”
“Hyung, I know a good pick up line you can use on her. Are you an angel? Cause your health bar dropped when you fell from heaven.”
“That sucks, Riki.”
Much as you’d like to watch Jungwon dig a deeper hole for himself with every word that comes out of his mouth, you do have an ounce of pity for him.
You walk over to their table, pulling out a chair. “Oh? Didn’t expect to bump into you here.”
Sunoo falls off his chair in shock, but he just stays on the floor staring at you with almost comically  wide eyes. “Y/n?! We all thought you died when you disappeared from our neighbourhood?”
“Died?! I left to study, who told you I died?”
Shaking his head, Sunoo giggles deliriously. “Wait till you find out what Jungwon’s love life is like. Did you know he’s got a…a fake girlfriend?”He barely gets the words out before another fit of giggles knocks him over.
You clear your throat. “I…might know a thing or two.” Jungwon’s head spins towards you, the existential horror evident on his betrayed glare. “Y/n, why would you tell them that?” The boys perk up almost immediately, the sound of Sunoo slamming the table reverberating off the walls as the owner shoots dirty glares at Riki. “No way, his fake girl is you?”
Just as Sunoo is about to tease you even more, Riki comes to your rescue. “Ah, who cares. At least you can game with us now. Hoyoverse ID, please.”
You wince, grinning sheepishly. “Yeah, about that, my ex deleted my account as revenge. I haven’t found time to restart.”
“Sheesh, Y/n, what kind of exes do you have?
“Bitter ones, obviously.”
“So Jungwon’s better than them all?”
“Oi Riki shut your mouth.”

LEVEL 002: FIRST DATE?!
Being in a relationship requires commitment. That much you’re aware of. Miraculously, so is Jungwon despite his absolute lack of experience.
“So Riki wasn’t joking? You’ve really never dated anyone ? Why?”
Jungwon sighs. If he weren’t so busy with his mouse, he’d probably have glared you down. “Didn’t think I needed it, don’t ask why.”
“Sheesh, okay. So touchy.”
This is how you’ve been spending your after-hours: playing any PVP game that suits your mood with your…boyfriend? Neither of you had really made an effort to give each other any experience dating someone who didn’t spend 24 hours a day thinking of 2D characters.
Jungwon’s fingers fly across the WASD as he continues the conversation. It’s a skill he seems to have acquired after so many years of doing this with Sunoo and Riki. “I think we should stick to the plan we agreed on.”
“What plan? We never planned anything.”
He swallows audibly, eyes darting around the screen of his monitor as his avatar creeps nearer towards his opponent’s “We need to try going on an actual date. Zero gaming references, strictly no mentions of your manga allowed. Practice makes perfect.”
“Practice makes perfect,” you echo. He’s right, you have to admit. It’s been fun having him around to help you level up in your games, but there’s no way you can continue on like this. The arrangement might as well be off, if that were the case.
Right?
You don’t miss the cheeky edge in his voice as he speaks. “You’ll have a harder time than me, so let’s have a bet. If you mention anything anime or manga or video game-related, I get to pick what games we play for a week.”
“Oh come on, there’s no way I’m gonna play Mario Kart for a week. If I win, you have to play a full Mystic Messenger route with me.”
Jungwon groans, falling back against the backrest as he slides away from you. “Now I really need to win.”
The following day, you find yourself standing at the gates of a small theme park. Squeals of pure delight fill the air as children dart around visitor’s legs. Pop-up shops line the edges of the park, with colourful carnival booths and cotton candy of every flavour imaginable. In other words, paradise.
Coincidentally, it’s also the place you and Jungwon visited when you graduated from high school, and you can’t help but wonder if he remembers it the way you do.
With Jungwon by your side, you head straight for the merry-go-round. Beckoning towards Jungwon, you swing your legs over a plastic horse. The spinning disc begins to rotate, and your horse bounces you upwards. “Ha, I’m finally taller than you!” you joke cheerily.
He shakes his head fondly, signature smirk curling to reveal his teeth. “In your dreams. Do you remember the first time we came here?”
“Oh yeah, in kindergarten I think? Your sister took us here. We snuck off to the spinning teacups twice.”
“If she hadn’t found us, we’d have gone a third time,” he snorts. “I miss being a scrappy kid. No need to worry if someone’s gonna kill me for my typos, or my parents nagging at me to bring a girl home. Just doing what I want to. Preferably with you.”
You hum absently, pondering on his sudden confession. It’s true, neither of you would have believed it if ten years ago, someone had told you you’d be doing a nine-to-five desk job. “Heh, we used to say we wanted to be game developers. Look at us now.”
“Look at us now.”
The next five minutes make you feel as though the two of you are in your own little bubble, and you are so lost in conversation that you almost don’t notice that the ride has stopped. As you step off the platform, you find yourself wishing this could last forever. Wasn’t so bad, was it?
“C’mon, I wanna try the roller coaster next.” Jungwon nudges you towards the loopy tracks, painted in a blinding white that reflects the bright morning sun. “Last I checked, you’re pretty good with heights.”
With his hand on your shoulders, he steers you towards the winding line of poor souls who don’t know what’s coming. Luckily for you, this isn’t your first time. Following Jungwon’s lead, you march forward. The day’s going well so far, but somehow it just doesn’t really feel like a date. Oh well, that can be built up over time. You squeeze your way through a small crowd, peering over tall shoulders. And as the crowd parts ever so slightly…
It can’t be.
Not far from you, a head of dyed blonde hair glints in the sunlight. As you lean forward, you see the face attached to it. Your ex.
And hand-in-hand with him is another ex-colleague.
You should’ve known, really. They’d been making eyes at each other even while you were dating, so this shouldn’t be a surprise. But as your fingers dig into the sleeves of Jungwon’s sweater, you can’t ignore the way your heart clenches painfully, dread coursing through your limbs as you will your legs to just move along.
For better or worse, Jungwon is a highly perceptive person. He follows your gaze. “Is that…” His voice trails off, hands tightening their grip on your back.
You swallow thickly, trying to tear your eyes away. “Y-yeah. Let’s keep moving, shall we?”
Forcing a smile, you surge forward with greater resolve than ever. Today’s not about him, is it? It’s about you and Jungwon. Right. Today can still be a good day.
“Y/n?”
Jungwon’s voice rings clearly despite the bustling visitors surrounding you. You look up in surprise as his arm wraps around your shoulders, hand squeezing your bicep firmly. An assurance. “Ignore him. Even if he spots you, he wouldn't dare come here.”
“And if he does?”
“He’s just a side character in the grand scheme of things. You’re the main focus today, don’t let him ruin our date…or whatever.”
His words send your heart aflutter, warmth filling your veins like honey. Leave it to Yang Jungwon to make you feel special. “Now say it with me: I am weirdo otaku, and my ex is a smelly normie with no real hobbies.”
You know he means it as a joke, but somehow you can hear your voice growing louder and more confident as you repeat after him for laughs, and you realise that for the first time in months, you are perfectly calm about the whole thing. Maybe it’s the fact that you know for sure he’s in the wrong now. Maybe it’s the fact that Jungwon literally has your back. Either way, you’ve finally found it in you to stand up for yourself.
“Right, I’ve got a date to enjoy with my boyfriend.” Hooking your arm with Jungwon’s, you lead him towards the cotton candy stand. “I can’t stand the sight of that bastard, so let’s go.”
A genuine smile graces Jungwon’s cat-like features, dimples deepening as he gazes at you with so much fondness in his eyes it’s as though you’re the only one in his world. You suppose years of knowing each other gives him that right, but you can’t explain away the tickly sensation in your belly when he looks at you that way. “Well, I’m glad. At least that’s one obstacle we’ve overcome through this amazing plan of ours-“
“And thank you for joining me in the Mystic Messenger grind.”
“What? Since when?” He gapes, horror dawning on his face as he realises the situation he’s gotten himself stuck in.
“Oh, you know exactly what you did.”
“...that doesn’t count.”
“Does too!”
“Does not.”
“Whatever you say, loser. Get ready for a tearjerker marathon, Won. We better stock up on tissues before we start tonight.”

LEVEL 003: MIXED SIGNALS
You are positively, utterly, tragically, extremely screwed. Why? Because you have a chapter of a doujin to upload. Tomorrow. And said chapter is…nonexistent. And judging by the influx of comments under your discord, the fans aren’t gonna be happy if you don’t keep your promise. Then again, neither are you. You’re actually just excited for this, but to think you might just let your readers down…
You sigh, cracking your knuckles as you flop into the study chair. This is not the time to be panicking, you decide as you pick up your pen. You’ve got the plot down, the action scenes are already looping in your head, plus the cheesy romance factor is definitely, undeniably there. So what’s the issue here? Why is it that as you twirl the digital pen between your fingers, you are staring at a blank canvas?
Death by manga. Not a bad way to go out. You try to squeeze your brain, gulp down a whole cup of hot tea, hot coffee, anything at all. But none of it works. An hour later you are still met with a snowy white expanse across your PC, not a single face, hand, just nothing. Great.
You reach for your phone. Maybe checking the fan art submissions will give you some ideas. But as you pick it up, a notification tone pings, screen lighting up as a message pops into existence. A red heart floats beside the text.
won<3: why r u online on twt rn arent u supposed 2 b asleep
you: omg ur online pls save me n log on 2 discord thx
Almost immediately, your discord alert tone goes off, and Jungwon’s voice blasts from your monitor. “You okay? You should’ve turned in for the night two hours ago. What’s keeping you up?” The concern in his tone is evident, despite the virtual barrier. It feels good, to know someone’s looking out for you. Especially if that someone is Jungwon.
“Listen…you know how my new chapter is up tomorrow? Well, I kiiinda haven’t finished drawing it yet.”
The silence in your room is telling, save for what you think might be Jungwon dropping his bag of chips. “Y/n, you can’t be serious. Share the file with me, we don’t have much time if you want to get any sleep tonight at all.”
“Really? You’ll help? Thank you so so much I’ll buy you dinner tomorrow.” You fiddle with the controls, and it just so happens that Jungwon decides to turn his camera on at the exact same time. His face appears across your screen, and for a moment you forget what you’re supposed to be doing.
Although it’s past midnight, he still looks absolutely gorgeous. With the contacts off, his eyes are their natural black, sharper than when you see him in the mornings. You are about to question why he is so alert today when your eyes fall on his pursed lips, a pretty shade of pink, much like when you were kids. He did grow up well, you’ve got to admit. But instead of his features making you flustered, it seems to make your heart ache instead. It’s an inexplicable feeling, similar to nostalgia. Regret for the years you’ve lost.
“What even…y/n, I don’t think this is called being unfinished. You didn’t even start.” He runs a hand through his auburn hair, expression giving away the exasperation directed at you. “Well, we better get started. Pick your pen up, we’re in for a long night.”
The next two hours are spent brainstorming and you panicking over the lineart, while Jungwon tries to colour in the cover page. Every time you let out an “oops”, you swear you see the cat ears on Jungwon’s headset twitch in annoyance. (Not that it matters, but that’s the headset you got for him for his eighteenth birthday.)
After a while, you settle into a comfortable silence, save for the gentle tapping of your pen’s nib on the screen. “Hey, Won?”
Hearing the hum of acknowledgement from his end, you continue. “Did you…miss me when I left? I know you found out from my mother, but only because I was too scared to tell you on my own.”
There is a pause, where only Jungwon’s even breaths are audible. Finally, he answers your question. “Y/n, you were my best friend. You still are. Of course I missed you.” He says it like it is so obvious, like it is a given for him to care so much about you, platonic or not.
“Weren’t you a little…disappointed by what I was like when we met again that day? I did try to pretend I’d changed.” You’ve never actually told Jungwon that if he hadn’t talked to you that night, you were planning to never approach him again. Back then, you would’ve wanted to pretend he didn’t exist. But that night at the arcade, and how he’d shown you over the past few months that he wasn’t going anywhere, it made you wonder. Why’d you want to stick with me?
“Disappointed? Never. Not in you. You haven’t had it easy since you left our hometown, I know. But from here out, I’m sure you’ve figured out what you want, haven’t you?”
A wave of relief washes over you, the comfort dulling your senses as you rest your chin on the desk. “You’re setting my standards a little too high, you know.” Your eyelids begin to droop, the prolonged exposure to the screen beginning to take its toll on you. Slowly, the world fades to black. “Won, can you wake me in five minutes?” you manage to get out, before your consciousness slips away as you lay your head down.
Unbeknownst to you, Jungwon watches your slumbering figure, a bittersweet tang in his mouth as he admires your fluttering eyelashes, the slight rise and fall of your shoulders, the tiny twitches of your enticing lips, a virtual barrier separating him from your sleeping frame. His fingers trace the image of you cast on his pc, chest cavity clenching painfully as he realises how much more beautiful you’ve become in the five years that passed with regret. “If I had told you back then, would we be what we are now?”
The next day arrives without a hitch. You had to apologise to Jungwon for falling asleep on call, to which he replied with a cheeky eye roll. “If you want to make it up to me, come over to my place tonight. Wii sports isn’t fun as a single-player game.”
You wrap up your work in record time, with your supervisor being so incredibly impressed that she almost tries to assign you extra work, but you manage to run away before she gives you overtime for the third time this week.
Jungwon has been to your place many times, but you haven’t actually visited his apartment before. The times you go over to pick up stuff aren’t counted because you don’t actually go in, and you’re honestly curious to see what your…boyfriend(?)’s taste in interior design is.
After picking up some takeaway from a nearby yakitori place, you and Jungwon make the short trip from the office to his place. “What’s it like? Do you have a whole cabinet dedicated to your vocaloid figurines or something?”
“Nope,” he shrugs, an odd look on his face as he eyes you warily. “I have some…ah never mind.” He stops, and you realise you have reached his front door. He swings the door open, hands fumbling in the dark for the light switch. “Welcome to my apartment. Make yourself at home. There’s some soda in the fridge if you’re thirsty.”
One look into the apartment is all you need to know that Yang Jungwon is the same, tidy creature you’ve always known. The living room is minimalistic, with a deep blue couch in the centre. A small television leans against a wall, some wires disappearing into the back. To the left, a small cloth-covered box sits in the corner, and you assume it is for his gadgets. The kitchen looks extremely new. Too new, even, and knowing Jungwon he’s probably never actually used it before. A short corridor leads to the bedroom, but the lights don’t reach that area.
Jungwon drops the keys into a small basket on the kitchen counter. “Bathroom’s in the bedroom down the hallway. If you want, you can take a shower. I’ll leave a shirt for you. Might not be a good fit though.” He doesn’t even have to look at you to know, since his shoulders are just so broad that if you were to put on his clothes, they’d probably slide right off you. But why does the thought of wearing his shirt make your cheeks burn? You used to do this when you were kids, when you crashed at his house for sleepovers and you forgot your pyjamas. You’d borrow his favourite pyjamas just to watch him pout, but he could never say no to you. And when he began to outgrow you, you were a little disappointed when he decided to just give that set to you since “you seemed to like them so much”.
“I invited Sunoo and Riki, they’ll be over soon. I’ll get the console set up, so you go clean yourself up.”
Without a single protest, you thank him and make your way into the bedroom. You’re dying to wash up after a long day at work. The moment you step in, you are greeted by the pleasant smell of lavender and chamomile. His childhood home used to smell like that too, so the aroma is somewhat nostalgic, and very welcome too. The bed covers are tucked into the sides of the bedframe neatly, its colours matching the couch outside. His favourite colour hadn’t changed all this time. In fact, you’re willing to bet his gaming controller is blue.
As you peer into the washroom, you notice a small bottle of makeup remover, its contents still to the brim. You’d mentioned passing your favourite brand once, and there it is, perched on the bathroom counter. For some strange reason, an odd warmth trickles into your chest as you shut the door.
Your shower is quick but thorough, and as you step out you notice the pile of clothes on the bed. Slipping on the soft fabric, you sniff the sleeves. It smells kind of like the cologne you told him smelled nice on him once. So he did remember. He always did remember the weirdest things, after all.
“Who did?” Jungwon leans into your ear from behind you, his breathy whisper tickling its way into your ears. The sudden assault on your hearing makes your neck twitch away from him, but as you lurch away from him your balance tips. The fabric of Jungwon’s loose T-shirt bunches in your fist as you hold onto him for support, but you end up dragging him down with you. As your back hits the bed, you hear a soft oomph from Jungwon. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” you gasp, turning your head to the left and-
oh.
His face is inches from yours, a proximity that you never would’ve thought possible until now. Every shaky breath between his lips is accentuated with a nervous swallow as you watch him attempt and fail to pry his eyes away from your lips. You gasp audibly, feeling lightheaded despite already being on your back and your fingers are twitching desperately. The odd warmth is back, and your body moves on its own accord, fingers reaching out to Jungwon’s jaw. But as your fingertips are just a millimetre away from his skin, Jungwon seemingly sobers up, abruptly breaking the spell for himself. “S-sorry, don’t know what came over me,” he stutters, sitting up before you can touch him. He moves to get off the bed, but something within you breaks. Without warning, your hand snaps to his wrist, tugging him backwards and it’s all too fast, you shouldn’t be thinking about your best friend like this-
But here you are, leaning in to join your lips with his. It’s not your first kiss, but it may as well be with the way your heartbeat pounds in your ears, adrenaline shooting through your veins as you wrap your fingers around the nape of his neck, pulling him closer. The distance is too little, too much, the electrifying heat unbearable yet so addictive. With your eyes shut, the hesitant brush of his palm on your hip is magnified tenfold, and your heart races as you feel him bury a hand in your wet hair, his thumb grazing your cheek slightly. It’s gentle, it’s sweet, it’s perfect, and you smile against his lips. But before you can lock your fingers with his, everything disappears. He pulls away from every part of you, and it is only then that your eyes flutter open.
“Y/n, I…”
A weight in your chest drops as you see the guilty expression on his face, eyes looking anywhere but you. “You…I’m sorry.”
You shake your head, fingers reaching for his own, but he retracts his hand faster. “Wait, don’t go. We just…you just - okay, what are you saying sorry for again?”
He gulps, throat bobbing as he purses his lips firmly to stop them from trembling. “I think you’re probably just confused since we hadn’t seen each other for a while. Just, let’s not do…that again, or-”
“Or what?!”
“Or I’ll think you actually like me.”
You scan his face, searching for any signs of mischief, but his eyes are still averted, biting his lip like a guilt-ridden cat. Normally you’d think this is cute, but right now nothing but irritation is clouding over any instinct to be calm about whatever’s going on right now. “Jungwon, I literally just kissed you. What else would I mean other than that? People don’t kiss people they don’t like.”
“You’re confused, Y/n,” he sighs, rubbing his temple tiredly. You want those hands on yours right now, but he isn’t going to give it to you and you know it. “You don’t know what you want. Heck, neither of us know what we’re doing. What was this stupid deal anyway? It was selfish of me to even let this happen, I mean it’s been five years. This was just a whole stupid idea to give teenage me what he wanted. You probably don’t even need me in your life, and it’s so stupid of me to want to be in yours like this.”
“Are you kidding me? I want you here. I like you, and I want you by my side just like this right now. I’m not leaving again, Jungwon. Do you…did you even like me at all?”
“Yes. Too much. But you’re…” he trails off, a muffled groan escaping his lips as he buries his face into his knees. “If you knew how much I really like you, you’d never be able to leave.”
“Then I won’t-”
The doorbell interrupts you, and Jungwon takes the opportunity to scramble off the bed, leaving you alone in the room. Sunoo and Riki’s loud banter drifts into the small space. As Jungwon’s scent becomes too strong for you to bear in the room, you grab a breather before walking out. “Hey guys,” you murmur, resisting the urge to roll your eyes as Jungwon pretends to be busy with the controllers.
“Were we interrupting something?” Sunoo asks absently, fussing with the snacks he brought from the convenience store downstairs. When neither of you reply him, Riki smirks knowingly. “Lovers’ quarrel, then?”
You smack Riki in the arm. “You’ll regret that when I kick your butt at Wii sports later.”
At your overly confident declaration, Jungwon lets out a loud snort. “Oh yeah, because you’re so good at bowling, Y/n.” His snide comment ticks you off, bringing out your competitive streak. “Oh it’s on, Yang,” you growl, cracking your knuckles in the most menacing angle you can find.
The night is full of laughter, despite the tension between you and Jungwon. It’s easy to ignore, with Sunoo and Riki over, but every now and then you look over at Jungwon, who purposefully maintains his absolute lack of eye contact with you. Which is atypical of him, and you’re sure Sunoo’s already noticed but knows better than to point it out. After rounds and rounds of stupid games that usually end with someone falling over, you flop onto the couch, cracking open a can of marble soda. “That last move was killer. Don’t think I’ll be able to walk tomorrow,” you groan, taking a swig of your soda as if it’s alcohol and you’re a tired mother. (Technically you all can legally drink, but you know better than to do that tonight because Jungwon will freak if you guys throw up in his apartment.)
Riki chuckles, tossing another can across the living room towards Sunoo. “Ha, Y/n’s getting old.”
“I’ll get the Salonpas, you guys sit here,” Jungwon sighs, jumping up from his seat on the couch to the cupboard behind you. He throws a few at your head, and chucks another box at Sunoo, who glares at him like he just said mint chocolate ice cream’s the most disgusting dessert he’s ever eaten.
“You’ll thank me tomorrow, Sunoo.”
Mumbling a string of inaudible words, Sunoo slaps a patch on his shoulder. “What time do you want to sleep?”
“NEVER.”
Jungwon fiddles with a bunch of wires, and the screen of his nintendo flashes across the TV. “Anyone up for a DDLC run?”
“How do you still have this? And why is your progress already two days in?”
“Y/n and I played it the two weeks we were messing with Mysme, so we wouldn’t get bored.”
“Oh nice, whose death did you remember most?”
“Gotta be Yuri’s, I think.”
“No way, Natsuki’s freaked me out more. I nearly threw the game out the window when I saw it.”
“Natsuki?!”
Their quarrelling continues, and you shake your head in amusement. You’ve played the game multiple times, enough to the point nothing about it scares you anymore. When you and Jungwon first played it together in elementary school, you couldn’t sleep for a whole week. Cue the endless sleepovers, where every little creak of the door would jerk you two awake. You remember having to hold Jungwon’s hand under the covers for security.
But now, that memory only serves to remind you of the events that came about a few hours ago. Disconnecting yourself from the conversation, you lean back into the couch, fingers subconsciously drifting to your own lips. The feeling hasn’t really faded, resurfacing every time you think about it too long. As your eyes flutter shut, your mind goes back to what he said earlier. Are you really using him as a rebound? But you still believe, after all this time, that it’s fate who brought you back to him. You need him in your life again, nothing to do with your ex.
Which brings you to the question: where’s the fine line between friendship and romance? Because with every passing day, Jungwon’s every move makes you start to question what he really means to you.
You hear a rustling of fabric, and a small felt blanket is draped over you, the soft material sliding over your toes. “Is she asleep?” you hear Sunoo ask.
Judging by the fact that Jungwon’ voice is nearest to you, you assume he’s the one who gave you the blanket. “Sure looks like it. Guess we bored her to sleep.” The couch cushions sink, and you feel the backrest dip.
“So, Jungwon, what happened before we got here? Did you guys fight or something?”
Jungwon sighs. “It’s…I think I made a mistake with her. She’s mixing up her feelings, and she probably just missed me.” There is an unmistakable bitterness in his words, the way he spits them out with such self-doubt that it makes your heart ache. You want to open your eyes and grab him by the shoulders and shake him awake, but now isn’t the time.
“But Jungwon hyung, I don’t think she just misses you. I’ve seen the way she looks at you. It’s kinda gross. You two are disgustingly cute.”
“It’s not romantic, Riki. She didn’t like me when we were kids, why would she like me now? The least I could do for her is to not get in the way of her future since that’s what we agreed on, but-”
“But do you like her?” Sunoo asks, ripping open a bag of potato chips.
“I don’t know. When we were kids I coud just brush it off as stupid teenage infatuation. I thought I got over her, but the moment I met her again everything felt different. It’s...I don't know. It’s just not the same.” The frustration is evident in his tone, and you have to fight the urge to crack your eyelids open and yell at him. It all hits you for the first time how hard your departure from his life must have hit him. His own best friend (and childhood crush) disappearing without a trace, and not even telling him.
Luckily, Sunoo comes to your rescue. “She returns your feelings, then. She’s back for good, Jungwon. You’re not holding her back, trust me. She’ll stay this time.”
The long pause is almost painful for you, who cannot see the look on Jungwon’s face now. You can picture it, but the curiosity is near unbearable. To your surprise, Jungwon is the one who breaks the silence.
“But…what if she wants to leave again? What then?”
What then? It’s a question begging to be answered, an enigma that should not be. Even Sunoo falls silent at Jungwon's raw, vulnerable confession that he’s scared, terrified even that he’ll lose you someday. No, you want to say. I won’t leave again. But would he believe you? Sunoo might. Riki does. But Jungwon? The one who missed you twice as much as you missed him, the one who took you back in a heartbeat, the one who willingly let himself suffer for a taste of what he thought he couldn’t have. It’s not fair, you decide. It’s not fair that Yang Jungwon is so selfless and aware of every little detail, pretending to be unbothered by everything under the sun. But you know that’s not the truth, that beneath those sturdy shoulders you’ve leaned on for far too long, there is a boy who just wants your love. It’s ironic, really, that the person who hurt him most is the one who has the power to end the years-long torment he’s been put through.
Your thoughts are jumbled in your brain as a restless sleep finally claims you. Just before you nod off, you hear the flip of a switch, the rustling of a mattress being pulled out, and…
A kiss on the forehead.

SIDE QUEST XX: MEET THE PARENTS
After that groundbreaking sleepover, a lot of things go unsaid between you and Jungwon. Somehow, there’s a weird gap where you’re eager to talk about what happened that day, while Jungwon seems to want to avoid it completely, contrary to what he said that night. You still pass each other at work, but no text messages ever come in like they used to, inviting you to play whatever mind-numbing game he feels like. It’s the quiet that scares you most, and even though Sunoo called you the other day to tell you not to worry, that Jungwon will come to his senses already, you fear that this is the day Jungwon ends his common sense streak.
You’re beginning to plan on how to get a key to his apartment when you hear a light tapping on your work booth. Swivelling your chair around, you find yourself face to face with the very person who’s been occupying your thoughts. You take a moment to look him up and down, searching for any signs he may be regretting pushing you away that day. But all you see is a sheepish Jungwon, dressed in the cutest pink sweater you’ve ever seen, and the earphones you gave him hanging around his neck. “Um, Y/n…can we talk?”
For a moment, your heart leaps. Is he going to make amends? You jump up, dragging him into a secluded corner. “Is this about…you know?”
“No…I’m sorry. It’s the opposite, actually. It kinda slipped my mind about what we wanted to do over the weekend. Do you still remember?”
Remember? Of course you remember. This weekend, you were supposed to go back to your hometown to visit both your parents. You’d gone back to spend time with your parents before, but never with any of the neighbours who used to dote on you as a child. And after the arrangement you and Jungwon had, you decided to visit his family, where he would introduce you as his girlfriend just to get his parents off his back about “settling down”.
But now that whatever’s between you two is more obvious than ever, it would probably make sense to Jungwon to cancel. Yet a part of you deflates at the thought. “I still wanna go, if that’s what you mean.”
You watch as Jungwon gulps, throat bobbing as he squeezes his hands together. “Won’t you feel a little weirded out? I mean, after…that, I’d understand completely.”
“Hate to break it to you Jungwon-ssi, but the awkwardness is very much one-sided.”
He seems to hesitate for a moment, before speaking up again. “Are you sure-”
“YES. I want your mother’s jajangmyeon. You can’t keep me away from it forever.”
And with that, the deal is done. Ignoring Jungwon’s absolutely manic laugh of disbelief, you slip back into your seat, a plan already beginning to form.
That same weekend, you stand in front of the Yang family’s apartment, a death grip on the handle of the crocker in your hands. Yet when paired side by side with Jungwon, it’s clear almost immediately who’s the stressed one.
“Isn’t the girlfriend supposed to be the scared one when meeting the parents? Why are you the one acting like you’re about to faint in front of your own house?!” you chide, nudging him with your elbow hard enough to throw his balance off. Still, he squeezes your shoulder in what you assume is some awkward show of reassurance. “You don’t have to do this, no one’ll blame you.”
“Now is not the time to be regretting your decisions, so suck it up. You’re the only one with a problem about this.” You can’t help the curt edge in your tone, because try as you might, it’s undeniable that meeting the Yang family after so many years freaks you out. They loved you as their son’s best friend, no doubt, but as a potential future daughter-in-law?
Before either of you can start to get cold feet, you lunge for the doorbell. The button is worn, from years of you, Sunoo and Riki jabbing it every day. From the sound of it, the batteries must’ve been replaced recently, but the melody retains its same nostalgic tune.
Almost immediately, you hear the fumbling of keys in a lock, and the door swings wide open to reveal a familiar face.
“ Jungwon-ah, you’re here-” It’s as though you can pinpoint the exact moment his mother realises who the girl standing next to her son is. “Is that…Y/n? It’s been so long! We’ve missed you so much! Jungwon-ah, why didn’t you tell me you met her? I could’ve organised dinner with her family long ago! Ah, what a wonderful surprise. Come in, come in!” She invites you in without waiting for you to greet her, practically dragging you into the house. “Make yourself at home, although you probably already feel at home. Oh, is this for me? Thank you so much, dear, what a thoughtful child you are!” Accepting the pot of food you prepared, she hurries into the kitchen for a pair of mittens.
You take your time to look around with Jungwon’s supervision. Not much has changed, save for the little white gate barely holding back the family dog. Maeumi (which is the adorable ball of fluff’s name, according to Jungwon) leans against the gate eagerly, barking with sheer joy at the sight of Jungwon. “Do you…wanna pet her?” Jungwon asks awkwardly as he notices you eyeing her in adoration. As he gets a nod from you, he can’t help the chuckle that escapes from him, and he bends down to fiddle with the lock.
Almost instantly, Maeumi bounds into Jungwon’s outstretched arms, licking his face uncontrollably as Jungwon laughs. “So it’s easier for a dog to get a kiss from you than a human, huh,” you mumble softly. Jungwon just rolls his eyes, his cheeks turning visibly red.
You hear the slam of a door. “Why didn’t anyone tell me Jungwon was here…oh Y/n!” Jungwon’s sister runs out of her room, sweeping you into a tight embrace. “Who would’ve guessed, our sweet baby brother brings his childhood sweet-”
“NOONA.”
She giggles deliriously, absently dismissing Jungwon with a wave of her hand. “Come on, Y/n. We have lots to catch up on.”
The rest of the night goes by seamlessly. Dinner is a casual affair, which feels more like a reunion as your parents drop by unexpectedly and end up joining in the conversation. As expected, most of the questions are about you and Jungwon. (“Where did you meet?” “How long have you been dating?”) With Jungwon by your side throughout the meal, you manage to catch him staring at you an absurd number of times, and they always end with him ducking away again. He’s usually confident in these kinds of settings, and he probably would appear so to everyone else, but for some reason you can almost feel the nervousness radiating off him like he’s some sort of weird lava lamp. Still, things go as planned without any slips of the tongue where you might accidentally reveal that your “love lives” (if any) were in jeopardy.
After the plates have been washed and cleared away, everyone shifts into the living room again, all the parents claiming their spots on the large L-shaped sofa. You, Jungwon and his sister seat yourselves on the floor, Maeumi resting on your belly. Surprisingly, the puppy took a liking to you quickly.
As the conversation lulls on, Jungwon leans nearer towards you. “Tired? I can take you home early if you’d like.” In response, you slap his thigh gently. “No one’s going anywhere, stop trying to make me leave before I work my magic on your parents. Too scared they’ll make you keep me?” As expected, Jungwon pointedly ignores you, opting to take a sip of his tea.
Half an hour in, Jungwon’s sister suddenly rises. “Hey Y/n, can you come out to the balcony with me? I want to catch some air.” She hauls you to your feet, tugging you towards the balcony far away from the others. As she locks the door, panic begins to claw up your throat. “Uh, what’s going on?”
She pats your head affectionately, sighing as she tries not to laugh. “Why do you look so scared? I’m not going to kill you, relax. I did, however, want to talk to you about something.” She gazes up at the night sky, leaning against the railing as she smiles softly. “So, Jungwon actually told me about you two way before our parents knew you two were…dating? I dunno, you guys are unlabelled right now aren’t you?”
You nod slowly, joining her on the edge of the balcony. “Honestly, I already know what I want, but Jungwon’s…scared? Worried? Maybe that’s the better word for it, but either way he thinks I’m confused about everything. Which could not be further from the truth, because I’m, uh. You know.”
“Falling in love harder than you expected to?” She sends a knowing smirk your way, one you can make out despite the relative darkness. She’s always been so aware of Jungwon’s life, and the lives of people around him. You’re no exception, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Yeah. It’s funny, really, how we went from friends to…this. I miss when it wasn’t so complicated, but things change. Feelings change, and I guess I don’t want things between me and him to stay the same anymore,” you admit. It’s kind of strange to be venting to your crush’s sister, but she probably knows him better than you. If not her, then who?
She turns to face you properly, a wistful expression on her face as she stares into space. “He tells me it’s just fate that brought you two together again, you know. But if it were just fate, he wouldn’t have carried those headphones you got him all those years ago literally everywhere. I’m willing to bet he’d have spent the rest of his life looking for you.” She’s right, and you know it. It’s not fate that brought you together. It can’t be, because that would mean everything that happened so far can be chalked up to everyone just following some story where you already know the ending. You made this decision on your own, to fall for Jungwon. He chose, years ago, to not let go of his feelings for you. And you refuse to let yourself be tossed around by the waves of life any longer. This time, Yang Jungwon will not disappear from your life, lost to the trials of time.
“Don’t let him out of your sight, Y/n. Dependable as he may seem, he’s still the baby of the family. You’d be surprised at how insecure Jungwon can be, especially when it comes to you. Talk some sense into him, will you?”
The exchange feels like an eternity, yet at the same time too short. You’re not nearly as brave as you want to be, not to mention when it comes to feelings like this. “But the heart wants what the heart wants, doesn’t it?” you muse, earning a pleased look from Jungwon’s sister. “That’s the spirit. You have full permission to punch him in the face if he still doesn’t see sense, got it? Or you can let me do it, I’d be more than happy.”
A couple hours later, when the cups are dry, and your eyelids begin to droop, Jungwon pulls you to your feet. “I think it’s about time we leave, Y/n has a busy day tomorrow. I’ll send you home.” Observant as always, Jungwon leads you to the door, waving goodbye to your families. The moment the door shuts behind you, his shoulders slump as though a huge weight’s been taken off. “Let’s go, I’ll walk you home.”
The journey is quiet, but as you reach the door of your apartment, it seems Jungwon has enough of the silence. “That was exhausting,” he groans breathlessly, sliding down the door as he massages his forehead. You decide that this is your opportunity to swoop in.
“But…would you do it again?”
His head snaps towards you immediately, panic flickering briefly across his face as he bites his lip, searching for the right words. “As…whatever we are right now?”
You take a step closer, leaning towards him as you stare directly into his eyes in a sudden rush of confidence. “No, I want something different.”
His throat bobs visibly as he swallows thickly, fists clenching and unclenching as he looks around, anywhere to avoid your intensifying gaze. “Y/n, we talked about this.”
“Correction: you talked, and I just listened. I heard what you told Sunoo and Riki, not that I didn’t already know how you feel.” You gently tug on his collar, bringing his face closer to yours. Your knuckles brush his cheek, and this time you relish the tingles it sends down your arm, straight to your heart. “You don’t need to tell me how you feel. A part of me’s always known. Yang Jungwon, I know you from the inside out. There’s nothing you can do that I haven’t already predicted. And it goes both ways. I’m not asking for the words ‘I love you’, because I already know. So what more do we have to hide from each other?”
Jungwon’s gaze wavers slightly, but try as he might, everything in the moment seems to be screaming, pleading with him to stay. “But you…I don’t want to be the thing that holds you back. I want you to do what you want, go where you want, whenever you want.”
“You’re all I want, Won. I’m not leaving your side again. What makes you think I could leave you behind so easily? I’ve already decided what I want. So be selfish, and ask me to stay.”
As you tighten your grip on his shirt, you step closer towards him, other hand drifting upwards to stroke his cheek. Your thumb traces the ridges of his dimples, slides down the edge of his mouth, and you can feel a surge of adrenaline as his lips part to form a word. Just one word, shaky and no more than a whisper, but it’s more than enough to stop time altogether as a tear falls from his eyes.
“Stay.”
Your vision goes blurry as you slip into his arms, his chin resting on your shoulder as his palms move to your back, pulling you closer. The fabric of his vest presses into your cheek, and your senses are filled with him. It’s too much and too little, all at the same time, his scent overwhelming you as he shakes under you. A garbled sob escapes your throat, and your fingers bunch up the fabric of his clothes for support as you both sway in place.
After what feels like hours, you pull away from his grasp. “You’re so stupid,” you blurt out, but the statement is void of malice as your voice trembles.
“Who’s the idiot who left for so many years and didn’t even try to call me?”
You wipe the tears from your eyes, slapping his arm as you try to calm yourself down. “About that…my mother told me you changed your phone and gave me your new number, but when I tried calling it an old man answered every time. Last night I was clearing my messages but I accidentally tapped into your contact, and then it finally hit me that she gave me a number with one wrong digit. I swear I wanted to call you.”
“You’re an idiot.’
“But I’m your idiot, aren’t I?”
Jungwon doesn’t answer, but you can feel the fondness practically radiating off him as he squeezes your shoulders. “Very funny, Y/n. Go in, you’ve got stuff to do tomorrow.” Just before you disappear into the apartment, you feel a hand block the door from shutting entirely. “I’ll, uh. Call you tomorrow morning. Just in case your alarm clock doesn’t go off, or you roll out of bed, or-”
“Jungwon.”
“Right.” He breathes out, hand slipping through the small crack of the door to pat your head. “Goodnight, Y/n.”
“Goodnight, Jungwon.”
“Sweet dreams.”
“You too.”
“Don’t fall off the bed.”
“I won’t.”
“Don’t sleepwalk.”
“I don’t sleepwalk, you know that.”
“Fine.” As he leaves with a little wave, you pretend to close your door, before poking your head out to watch his silhouette grow smaller as he walks down the corridor. Chuckling to yourself, you finally go inside to wash up and get ready for bed. Tomorrow is another day, one with Jungwon in it. And that alone, and the knowledge that every day from this day forth will never again be void of his presence by your side, is enough to give you the courage to live for tomorrow.

masterlist.
“hi! what can i get for you today?”
“hi. actually i’m jungwon’s friend,” the pretty customer in front of you says with a cheerful grin, “i was wondering if you could grab him for me?”
“ah yes of course! give me a sec, i’ll grab him from the back.”
you rush into the back and spot the boy with his clipboard, counting inventory by himself. a smile immediately forms on your lips at the sight of him, your heart already picking up the pace and you hadn’t even spoken to him yet!
swoon.
“hey jungwon, there’s someone wanting to see you out front. she says she is your friend.”
“oh? okay i’ll be out in a sec, thanks.”
with a quick smile, you jog back out front to continue serving the customers.
Tumblr media
“i think there’s something between them,” kai suddenly appears beside you, his eyes also trained onto your manager and the pretty girl now sitting at a table, happily chatting. “she has been coming in to find him a lot recently. i think he likes her. they’re quite cute together actually.”
“yeah... they are cute together.”
and they really were cute together. someone as handsome and popular as yang jungwon deserved nothing less than someone as beautiful as her. funny of you to think you even had a chance with yang jungwon.
an odd feeling is suddenly brewing in the pit of your stomach, something you haven’t felt before. as much as you didn’t want to admit it, you know it’s jealousy, something you shouldn’t be having towards jungwon and his pretty friend. but you can’t help it.
after that rainy night spent under the bus stop with jungwon, you thought maybe - just maybe - that there was more to your friendship than it seemed. something more special... and perhaps he felt the same way you did. but now you were back to that one sided crush feeling because evidently, the boy was interested in someone else. judging from how happy he looks right now.
“i’m planning a little movie night at my place tomorrow since we are all off,” kai’s voice knocks you out of your daze, a quick reminder that you had been staring at your manager and his friend for a little too long. “should i tell him to invite her too? i think it’ll be fun!”
“i mean if you want to... i don’t mind.”
“great! i’ll ask them right now!”
you watch as kai runs over to the pair and begins chatting, the trio giggling with each other before the tall boy runs back to where you were behind the counter.
“she said yes!”
sigh.
Tumblr media
“hey let me help you,” you suddenly hear jungwon’s soft voice from beside you as hands suddenly grab onto the tray of dirty cups and plates in your hold.
after a long shift, only you and jungwon were left to clean up and the atmosphere couldn’t get any more awkward for you. just something in you didn’t feel right, a rather uncomfortable feeling that has been quite heavy on your chest the entire afternoon.
can’t be... stupid jealousy again... can it?
“thank you,” you couldn’t help but sound a little distant compared to your usual bright self, something jungwon seemed to have immediately caught on. he gazes at you for a few moments before carrying the tray over to the kitchen sink.
“um... so did kai tell you about tomorrow night yet?” the cute manager asks you after clearing his throat, nervousness evident in his voice, “the three of us haven’t been able to hang out like this in a while.”
“yeah he did,” you barely nod at the boy as you begin to slip off your apron, “i... heard you’re bringing your friend? the pretty one from earlier?”
“oh- oh yeah kai did ask but-”
“you should bring her, it’ll be fun,” you almost immediately interrupt him, a smile finally appearing on your face because after all, you should be happy for your friend. “i mean if you don’t want to, you guys can hang out and i’ll just chill with kai tomorrow night. i’m happy with that too!”
“oh no, me and her are not-”
“anyway i’m done with the cleaning so i’ll leave first, get home safe.”
“hey-”
you were out of the kitchen before jungwon could even finish his words, leaving for the staff locker room just down the hallway. of course you felt bad, being so completely blunt for no particular reason. maybe you’ve just had a long day and needed sleep.
yeah, that was probably it. it was a ten hour shift after all.
you were too deep in thought while gathering your belongings to hear the door creak open and footsteps enter the small, dimly lit room. just as you close your locker and ready to finally leave, you turn around to be faced with jungwon now standing right behind you.
“AHH! oh my- you scared me!” your surprised yell was so loud, you’re sure people passing by would’ve heard but you’re more concerned about when your manager had gotten in here and why he was staring down at you. “when- when did you get in here?!”
“i’ve been in here for a while actually,” the boy suddenly takes a step forward as you take one back, your back hitting into the locker. even with the minimal lighting, you’re able to see the look in his eyes. it’s different from other days, different from his usual bright demeanour, “you were just too deep in thought to notice me.”
“well- well i’m going to go now-”
“are you...” he takes yet another step towards you, almost cornering you right in against the locker. he was now so close to you, his face just barely inches away from yours but you’re too stunned to move away. “are you really okay with me bringing her tomorrow night? do you want me to?”
“i- i already said it’ll be fun. i... also said that i’m happy hanging out with kai alone tomorrow night if you wanted alone time with her.”
“ah... so you want to hang out with kai alone?” jungwon says with a slight hint of distaste in his tone, his eyes narrowing into you, “you should’ve just said that before.”
“i-”
you watch as he reaches for his backpack from the locker beside yours, his gaze never once moving away from yours before the boy turns to exit the room. you were now finally left alone to let out that one nervous breath you didn’t even know you were holding in to begin with.
what the hell just happened?
end.

Jungwon was panicking, something like this would happen to him — he swore the earth was out to get him. “What the hell do you mean delayed shipment, I ordered it a month ago.”
He had nothing but a stupid perfume and a teddy bear now. “Maybe she’ll like it.” jay said, trying to cheer the boy up. “She really wanted this necklace, you should’ve seen the way her eyes lit up when she saw it.” He could remember the day he saw you scrolling through tiktok, stopping with eyes of amazement.
“Look at this beautiful necklace this boy bought his girlfriend.” You showed him the silver heart necklace. “It’s so expensive though.” You pouted, admiring the necklace before moving on — but jungwon made sure to remember the website and the necklace.
3 months it took him to make enough money to buy the necklace — 3 months of hard labor, and he had just enough to get you the necklace, just in time for christmas — well that’s what he thought. “Im gonna die, a week before Christmas and I don’t have her gift.”
He was fucked, he was fully convinced he was about to ruin your entire Christmas.
“wonie.” He felt a bunch of kisses on his face , he groaned, smiling at the sound of your voice. “It’s christmas get up.” Your voice was full of excitement. “Baby you sound like a child.” He said, his eyes fluttering open. “Merry Christmas.” He kissed your lips.
He sat up running his hands through his hair, looking down laughing at his attire — you had him wear matching elf pajamas and he couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous he looked. “Stop laughing — here.” You got up grabbing three gifts sitting them on the bed. “th-three.” You nodded, he took them. “of course, only the for my baby.” He was about to ruin christmas for sure.
He slowly opened up each gift — first 3 new games for his playstation, a new pair of sneakers that he wanted and a couples trip. “Baby, how much did you spend?” He was calculating all this in his head, the tax adding up rapidly. “Don’t worry about the cost, I can afford it that’s all that matters.”
“Do you like them?” You asked. “Of course I do baby, thank you.” He pulled you into a kiss. “So what did you get me?” You asked, he froze. “O-oh yeah.” He said, climbing out of the bed, grabbed bag containing the perfume and bear. “I know it’s not much but– wonie I told you weeks ago don’t stress about it.” You said.
“I know and I wasn’t at first.” He said, handing you the bag. “But then things went wrong.” You stared at him confused. “What do you mean?” you said. “I got you the necklace you saw on tiktok.”
You had to think for a second , your jaw dropping. “Jung-jungwon that necklace was super expensive.” You said. “I know, but you really wanted it so I worked extra shifts to pay for it.” He explained. “But it got delayed in shipment and won’t be here for another week or so.” He said. “And you bought me all this, and you’re stuck with that.” He pointed to the bag.
You looked down at the bag, taking out the paper, pulling out the two gifts. “It’s a seems so — I love it.” You interrupted him. “I’ve been looking for a new scent and you know I love stuffed animals.” You smiled. “Is this why you were so stressed yesterday, you thought I wouldn’t like this?” You chuckled.
“Don’t laugh at me , I just wanted your Christmas to be perfect.” He pouted, you sat the gifts to the side, climbing into his lap. “I told you, my Christmas would already be perfect as long as I had you, you’re all I need for Christmas.” You kiss the tip of his nose. “I love you okay, and I can wait a week or so for a necklace — I mean you worked how long to pay for it?”
“3 months of over time.” He said, his hands resting on your waist. “3 months, I love you even more for that, you didn’t have to, but you did, and I love you for it.” He smiled, feeling even more accomplished. “I love you too.”
“Merry Christmas wonie.”
“Merry Christmas baby.”
