Hard Work

You can’t always bring everyone with you.

When you return he immediately puts his hands on you, to inspect every inch of skin broken and unbroken alike. He knows the scent of blood which is yours, which is not your own. You are covered in both, but bloodletting is little concern to you.

You take him in your arms yet can’t help averting your gaze under his scrutiny.

Red eyes trace the shape of you haloed by fire. Fingertips press against the rigid foundations of your jaw, your cheeks. His lips purse.

“I did miss that face, you know.”

Of course he did. He always does. You lift your gaze to meet his and see the resolve of a man who’s holding on to something real. Yes. This is real. And you would not have it any other way.
