my boss is having to get involved with her daughter's school, because the school won't let her wear pants instead of a skirt despite the freezing winter......unless she identifies as a trans man or nonbinary. and this is the case in multiple schools in nz (and i have also heard in aus). while it's still mandatory for girls to wear skirts, if they have a non girl gender identity, they can wear pants. how fucking absurd and backwards is that?

Yes, plant leather is a great idea (not better than animal leather, in my personal opinion, but that's down to each individual's thoughts on the matter). But unfortunately much of it just can't replicate many of real leather's beneficial properties- and a lot of plant leathers heavily involve plastic in their production. (source)

Look, ALL clothing production needs to be more sustainable at this point. The chemicals involved in tanning actual leather, unless it's organic leather, aren't good for the environment either. And I will never rag on someone for their choice to avoid real leather- we're all just trying, I hope, to make the best choices according to our values and within the confines of a broken system (as long as we're not hurting anyone else). For me, the massive habitat loss and environmental destruction caused by plastics production and waste is a greater evil than the deaths of individual animals in the production of meat and/or leather. So I choose real leather and try to make each piece last as long as I can, aware that any choice I make will have environmental impacts and is not perfect. Someone else might see it differently, and I really am not in a position to judge their choices.

However.

The term "vegan leather" is blatant greenwashing, and 99% of the time it applies to plastic. If people prefer to wear plastic to avoid real leather, that's fine, but they- and moreover companies -need to be honest about that. Just like synthetic fabrics should be called plastic, so should synthetic leather. Even some of the allegedly "plant-based" stuff, it turns out.

I'm honest that my real leather is animal hide. Time for the faux-green fashion industry to display some honesty of its own.

Hello! An update on the babies!

Their feathers are coming in and they are starting to be more vocal. We've started holding them to get them used to human touch and they all passed their most important milestone: shitting on a human

One of them has a slightly malformed leg due to uneven bedding... We brought him to the vet and now he's wearing "tape pants" to correct the position. The vet told us to put him in a cup so he stays upright

He is NOT happy about it lol. He tries to escape often, but if everything goes well on next tuesday we can remove everything. We call him fancypants, I think we will keep him :> Anyway, that's all for now! Kisses

Latest silly thought: lovingly knitting Legacy an abyss-monster-sized sweater to keep him warm in the winter because he may not be freezing but you are (poor moth is cold-blooded and it's not his fault) <3

you're right though- Foul Legacy doesn't feel the cold the same way you do, so you get a sudden shock of chills the first time his icy claws brush against your skin in the wintertime, letting out a yelp and jumping away as you lightly bat his talons. after that you start to dodge and avoid Legacy's hugs unless he's been inside for a while, much to the dismay of both of you, so with some thought, you come up with a solution- you'll knit him a sweater! you make sure to pick out colors you think he'll like, shades of blue and purple and shiny silver, and get to work

it takes a few days of nonstop knitting, the ice on the roads making it too dangerous to go to work, but eventually you proudly present him with the finished sweater. and oh, the look of elation on his mask-like face when he sees it!! it's perfectly soft, cushioning some of the sharper parts of his armor but still having enough give so his claws don't tear the wool. and best of all, he can hug and snuggle with you without making you freeze to death! he insists on cuddling you for at least a full day to make up for lost time, and hey, if you just maybe made yourself a sweater to match his, you'll have a very happy moth Abyss monster in your arms <33
