I don’t like romance in movies
Now, this is totally personal opinion and preference, so please keep that in mind when reading.
“I don’t like romance plots in movies”
That sounds so weird I know. Especially when this entire blog I dedicated to one ineffable couple I’ve hyper fixated on ever since I offhandedly watched a random show on prime when I was bored.
There’s lots of things I don’t like about the idea of stereotypical *ahem, usually heterosexual* romance, and one of those things is the perceived intensity of attraction.
While I understand it to an extent, I also don’t. On the few occasions I’ve been romantically interested in someone I’ve never had the urge to rip their clothes off and jump their skin, or marry them that afternoon.
I do however, want to show them my book collection, send them obscure memes, talk about that one scene in that one show I can’t move on from yet, listen to them talk about their passions, share romantic but subtle moments, and just generally enjoy each other’s company.
Maybe this is because my lack of neurotypical tendencies, my demisexuality, or just my queerness in general, I don’t know.
But this type of romance is rarely shown in media, (again, in my personal viewing experience), especially in straight media.
You’re probably wondering what the fuck this has to do with movies. Same honestly I lost my train of thought one sec-

Romance in movies feels immensely rushed to me. There is no time to sit and talk while you watch the sunrise, there cannot be an entire episode where the entire plot line is your traumatic childhood and how you two can bond over the fact both of your dads left for milk and never came back, or your wooden frog collection.
Noooo, instead, there must be this instant inexplicable attraction that causes both of your hormones to go haywire, because the plot only has two hours to not only get through this plot line BUT the other three in the background.
For romance to work in my head, 👏🏾I 👏🏾 Need 👏🏾 Bonding 👏🏾 time 👏🏾.
That’s one of the many reasons I love OFMD and Good Omens so much, we get to see that bonding time.
Ed and Stede chilling while having breakfast in bed while they look at each other lovingly?
Goals.
Azira and Crowley sitting and enjoying a good bottle of wine while talking about the end of the world?
Never seen anything better.
I think romance is at its best when subtle and calming, not frantic and unnerving.
Don’t get me wrong, I think franticness has its place in romance, especially once sexual tension has begun, but there needs to be large spaces of comfort and safety in between. (In my personal opinion)

I just got your piece The Asexual Fetishist in my inbox and wanted to send you a quick thank you for breaking my brain open with that one. I've spent years trying to square my desire for novel sexual experiences/specific kink related interests with not actually being sexually attracted to other people. I've consumed a lot of content by asexuals about kink and the like but having someone actually explain their experience with their fetish and its impact on their sexual life has never popped up in my perusing. I've had a lot of hang ups about the asexual label so I haven't dug too deep. This has definitely inspired me do more than a cursory exploration and I will definitely be giving Ana Valens work a read. Thanks again!
yeahhhh!!!! I love to hear it, thank you. Ana Valens' writing is GREAT and seeing her, a very outspoken and proud perv and accused "degenerate" claim the asexual label made me feel better about revisiting it, too. Others land on a different way of describing themselves -- Cosima Bimbotheory for example says that while in contemporary parlance she qualifies as ace spectrum / demisexual, she instead identifies more with leathersex, because the leather community has always made space for boundary-breaking ways of achieving intimacy, and has always included people who have sex without "having sex." I don't think these views are incompatible, hence my inclusion of vintage leather exhibitionist porn That Boy in my essay as an example of what Valens calls Ace Erotics.
I got my start as a queer kid on the asexuality forums of the early 2000s -- before I had the language of being autistic or trans or unempathic, ace spaces were the only community where I could easily express feeling outside and beyond what normal human beings were expected to feel. And so I still find I have a home there.
I think asexuality gets clowned on far too much -- there is this annoying tendency to equate people having bad opinions or doing annoying shit with their identities, and so aces get written off as sex-shamey scolds and enbies get characterized as anti medical transition and all other kinds of dumb shit like that, often from people who should know better. im here to say you can be an asexual free use hole and that is actually not confusing at all if a person actually considers what asexual means.

Hi Wawa! I found your queer terminology post really informative as a fellow Chinese diaspora and asexual. Maybe you don't know this but are there any terms for aroace in Chinese? Or romantic orientations in general? Thanks!

Yeah!
"Aroace" would be "无浪漫无性恋（者)" (the 者 is optional. You can can just add it after the orientation to make it clearly referring to a person. 浪漫 means "romantic".
I guess I can just make another list to go over a few more specific terms. I will include a quick recap of all the terms. Refer to the previous post for synonyms and other slang. The official terms are all borrowed from English as loanwords or similar translations.
Orientation: 倾向 (qīng xiàng) (used more for romantic orientations as it describes inclinations and tendencies). E.g, 双性浪漫倾向 (Biromantic/Biromantic orientation). You would use 偏 (piān) to describe preference in orientation. E.g, 双偏同 (Bi leaning gay).
Sexual orientation: 性取向 (xìng qǔ xiàng) (取向 also means "orientation", as in direction).
Romantic orientation: 浪漫倾向 (làng màn qīng xiàng) (also any other word for "romantic" like 爱 or 感情倾向... it's all the same)
Queer: 酷儿 (kù'er) (loanword)
Nonbinary: 非二元 (fēi èr yuán) (“non” “binary” direct translation)
Genderqueer: 性别酷儿 (xìng bié kù'er) (“gender” “queer” direct translation)
Transgender: 跨性别 (kuà xìng bié) (跨 means “to step across” or “to straddle”)
Agender: 无性别 (wú xìng bié）(无 means “not to have” or “no”/“lacking”)

Asexual Awareness Week and BG3
Below the cut is 1,100+ words of interpreting Wyll Ravengard as demisexual. As an asexual person, I relate to many of Wyll's desires and experiences. That relation has lead me to this interpretation of him as a character. Interpretation is the key word here. This is simply another way view this character and gain insight. It's obviously extremely biased, which is why I put the word count first. So if your interested in analysis that is probably more projection than interpretation, I bring you this.
Wyll is portrayed as an almost incurable romantic. He constantly references stories, tales, fables, and myths when discussing his romantic desires. Romance heavily influences his sexual desires as well. It is practically inherent to his sexual attraction. While this can be viewed as idealism, I want to propose an alternative outlook. One where he hasn’t conflated romance and sexuality, but rather one where romance is vital to his sexuality.
Wyll talks little of his sexual habits outside of when romance is being discussed. These quotes are about dancing, but they happen while you’re romancing him.
“Don't worry! It's not really about the dance, it's about who's we're dancing with.”
“I had years of lessons but in truth it's all about your partner.”
Like when you’re romancing most companions, many things said have multiple meanings or implications. He’s telling you that while he does enjoy sex, it’s who you’re doing it with that makes it truly pleasurable. I think Wyll desires the intimacy that comes from sex more than the act itself. He’s drawn to the connection it brings rather than the pleasure.
At one point he describes his sexual history as “tight-laced” when he’s talking with Shadowheart. He says, “I was never one to sew my wild oats.” Apparently Wyll hasn’t had to practice and exercise much sexual restraint in his life. It’s easy to control one’s sexual desires when you don’t really feel them to begin with.
While he can understand people’s various sexual habits, I don’t think he can relate. He doesn’t see the appeal to casual sex. Sex doesn’t feel satisfying to him without connection. He has impulses, and sometimes he wants to act on them, but they don’t seem worth it. He doesn’t derive enough pleasure from the act alone to pursue it. Romantic relationships already provide sex, and he values love above all else. Why would he want anything else?
“Eh-heh, well, give it some time! Develop a bond, and…maybe I'll show you a move or two.”
“Hm, think of love as a strong ale, or a warm fire. Is the clang of steel on steel not made more satisfying by the pleasures that come after?”
Doesn’t sex feel decidedly better when you’re having it with someone you care for? How satisfactory can it be without attachment? How truly enjoyable is it without a bond?
“I value affection, over fun. A lasting memory over a passing fancy.”
“But I’ve always been a bit old-fashioned on these matters. I find more pleasure in a courtly dance, than a loveless fling.”
Isn’t it more fulfilling to love someone than lust for them? Do you not feel more fulfilled from loving someone than sleeping with them? Is sex even worth having without love?
“Gods I want you, but I can't take your body without taking your heart.”
Can Wyll even give you his body without giving you his heart? They seem to go hand in hand for him. Love is essential to his sexual enjoyment, he doesn’t seem to experience sexual desire without it. Love might be the only way he can desire it. Here is an interaction between him and Astarion.
Astarion: "You didn’t kiss anyone until you were fifteen?! Gods. What a tragic, sheltered life."
Wyll: "Sheltered? Not at all! I was exposed to all manner of riot and revelry. Hells, my father even urged me on once or twice."
His romantic tendencies don’t come from inexperience or prudishness. Wyll isn’t oblivious or naive when it comes to sex. He’s been exposed and even encouraged to have it. While he might call it “proper”, Wyll is aware his way of courting isn’t for everyone. Your sexual habits might not align with his personal wants, but he won’t respect you any less for yours. Wyll does not believe your sex life effects your worth. If anything, he feels his wants are regressive.
“But I still keep faith in the old tales of love. The ‘once upon a times’ and the ‘happily ever-afters’.”
“I'd, like to do this the proper way. The way of the old romances sung by the bards.”
“But I’ve always been a bit old-fashioned on these matters.”
He constantly uses the word “old” to describe his courting methods. He’s acknowledges these desires aren’t modern, and by referencing fairytales he’s aware they might even be fictious. He calls his sexual habits “tight-laced”, his romantic intentions as “old-fashioned”. They’re not exactly said negatively, but more with the acknowledgment that his wants come across as restrictive. When the habits of today hold no appeal to you, you feel stuck in the past. What are you supposed to do when fiction seems to be the only place where romance is done how you’d like?
If you have sex with Mizora, these are some of his responses.
“You shared your body with the fiend who holds my soul.”
“We danced! We made a connection…and you severed it for a single bite of the Hells?”
This next quote is how he responds if you say, ‘Can you blame me? It’s not like you’ve been putting out.’
“Is that what matters to you? Sex without union? Heat without heart? Did you not take joy in the dance?”
Now obviously the biggest issue is you slept with the being that holds his soul. However, he says these things because he thought you felt the same way about sex as he does. He thought sex was an act as precious to you as it was to him. He thought you also prioritized love over physicality. He thought you enjoyed the way things were going, clearly he was. Had he known you didn’t feel the same, he probably never would’ve pursued you.
Wyll doesn’t do casual, he doesn’t do “let’s see where this goes”. He seems like the type to pursue every romance with the intention of marriage. No, he won’t propose on the first date. He won’t even necessarily think either of you are compatible. However, that’s the whole point of courting! It’s to test the potential of forever. He likes agreements, he likes pacts. He wants certainty, reliability.
Yes, he probably hasn't had much firsthand experience with relationships. Yes, all these things can be seen as restraint. Yes, they can be seen as repression. They can also be seen as someone who knows himself and genuinely wants “happily ever after”. Someone who’s aware of what he’s asking and wants you to desire it as well. Maybe love is the only way he can connect to his sexual desires. Maybe love is important to him because it’s the only way he can truly enjoy sex. Love might be the only thing that lets him experience sex like everyone else. Maybe love is the only thing that let's him feel sex like it’s described in fantasy. Maybe he’s lost in that fantasy, or maybe he’s just demisexual.

I've recently read the being ace antology, which was very good and had some diverse ace rep. As for other books i'm not really up to date

Re: John being demi - don’t you think it’s possible he had sex because that’s what was expected of him? His age, lifestyle, etc. Especially because of his self-destructive tendencies and not always acting on how he truly feels. Or acting in a way that doesn’t express how he truly feels - i.e. Barcelona. He could have easily slept with Yoko early on, with her throwing herself at him but it wasn’t until correspondence and a deeper connection did he engage sexually. Not to mention him not wanting to have sex with men later in life because he couldn’t find one he connected with in that way. To me even the lyric “My love will turn you on” - is revealing.
If you want to interpret John Lennon as demisexual then you certainly can and I can't and won't stop you. But since you're asking me directly my answer is just a flat "no." John was sexually attracted to women so he slept with them. He was conventional that way. He was also hooking up with Yoko soon after Indica, he did not wait until the night he took LSD with her and recorded the sex tape.
You need to remember the cultural climate John existed in. It was "expected" of John to get married to a woman, settle down with her, have children, hold a steady uninspiring job, and then die at 70 with a gold pocket watch in his waistcoat without ever standing out from the crowd or doing anything that would express his individuality and personal needs. These were the stultifying expectations John grew up under and he hated it.
The Beatles kept their orgies secret because it would have destroyed them as a band if it got out that they were nailing groupies, this is the exact OPPOSITE of it being "expected" of them to have sex with lots of women.
The performative aspect was the groupies expectation of John to act like Beatle John while he was thrusting. That doesn't mean John disliked it or was carrying out an act he found distasteful for the sake of expectations. And remember: John kept posters of Bridget Bardot and Elvis Presley in his bedroom at Mendips because he was jerkin' it to their images. He only had a parasocial fanboy relationship with them but he was deeply sexually attracted to both. This is the opposite of demisexuality which requires a personal connection of some kind.
I talked about this in the McLennon server this afternoon so I'll just repost what I said in there:

that's not to say he couldn't fall in love if he met people but he had to keep his connections shallow as a matter of survival, he wasn't able to form those relationships easily and when he did connect to others it was because they pursued him.
Cynthia was the aggressor in her relationship with John, he liked her but he didn't pay attention to her until she dyed her hair blonde to catch his eye. Paul was super down bad. Yoko stalked him.
Otherwise even as a teenager John's relationships were strictly about sex, not romantic love, and he wasn't interested in romantic love until Paul and art school came into his life.

This is the exact opposite of demisexuality. John could form personal relationships and he could fall in love with people but when he did, he seemed to back away from them sexually. If we count Paul as one of John's lovers (and I do) then we see this happen to where John broke it off with Paul to pursue someone else physically (in this case Yoko.) John liked using sex as a way to connect with others but the moment genuine feelings got involved he got skittish. Note that he initially was planning to buy a house with May Pang but then he went back to Yoko when the Montauk plans began solidifying. John was certainly attracted to May Pang and he certainly had a personal connection with her but when that started getting a little too real and too deep, then he left her and would only hook up with her occasionally in controlled environments where he could ghost her easily afterwards.
The same thing happened with Yoko: after Sean was born, she and John stopped having sex and she sent him to the massage parlors to avoid dealing with him.
And don't forget how John's relationship with May Pang started: Yoko hired May Pang to be John's mistress. May was paid by Yoko to have sex with John and to keep him within Yoko's reach while they were in Los Angeles, what with Yoko's daily phone calls. May did fall in love with John but John knew that May was a business asset controlled by his wife and that she was being paid to never leave him. This was the foundation of their affection for each other. When May and John went back to New York and started looking for houses in Montauk, John opted to go back to Yoko for her smoking cure and came back ready to leave May Pang, aka the relationship with May Pang was becoming too real and too deeply rooted in actual Love (with that capital L) that meant May would no longer be forced to stay with John due to receiving a salary from Yoko Ono.
What seems to be more of a pattern in his life is that he was very wary of forming personal connections with others, when they did form it was because the second person pursued him vigorously, and then he had a saddening tendency to leave once his love with that second person began to develop into a deep, long lasting adult relationship. If anything, John seemed to use sex as a way to keep himself hidden and to stop forming connections with others because the moment he had sex with someone he could safely label them "disposable" which is exactly what he did with Paul and May despite his intense connections with both of them and the fact that he was sexually intimate with both of them.
John seemed to fear love and the responsibilities and ecstasies that it brings. This is not demisexuality as I understand it and I simply cannot agree with the assertion that John was demisexual.

I used to be suicidal back in high school and almost even tried actually killing myself twice, once by jumping off a building (chickened out) and another by trying to poison myself (didn't work because I'm an idiot). Entrance exams were coming and I was stressed okay? My mom barely recognised me (my mom doesn't know about this btw)
After I finally got into uni I found myself surrounded with people who were really nice and actually gave the time to talk to me. It helped me open up a little by little and I found myself enjoying life for the first time. I think the slef-loathing stopped when I invited them over to my house once and they bought me a gift unprompted. It was the sweetest gesture to me
Sadly I don't talk to them as much anymore, I see them and say hi but they did a lot for me. One kf them was actually the same person who helped me realise I was a demisexual but I'm not getting into that.
A weird thing happened with my suicidal tendencies though, they didn't really go away, they kind of just took a different form? I don't want to kill myself anymore but now I have a kink for it.
Everytime I think about someone killing me I get a little excited (aroused isn't exactly what I'd call it but I think it's something similar? IDK man I'm on the ace spectrum, I can only guess what that feels like). It's not just the killing, the whole "I'll either kill you or make you go through something worse than death" kinda thing.

Ranking The Gangsey by How Asexual I Think They Are
1. Henry Cheng - 100% canonically aroace. Completely supported by the text. In a queerplatonic polycule with Gansey and Blue.
2. Richard Campbell Gansey III - SUPER a-spec coded in my opinion. Values friendship above all else. His main conflict in the series is learning how to juggle 4 different queerplatonic relationships at the same time.
3. Blue Sargent - Demisexual-coded. She just wants to be friends with Gansey forever with maybe some sex far down the road. Her solution to knowing she will kill her true love with a kiss is simply to never kiss anyone ever. Easy peasy. Also all the scenes where Blue keeps Adam from kissing her are asexual coded.
4. Ronan Lynch - Some ace-spec tendencies but overall I think just a gay allosexual. Too many car=sex metaphors. Most asexual thing he ever did was laugh at Gansey and Adam gawking at Orla in a bikini which was mainly because he’s gay, but as an asexual, I probably would have had the same reaction.
5. Noah Czerny - Straight allosexual. First time we meet him he is a gawking at an Ashley. Even as a ghost he still manages to make out with a girl.
6. Adam Parrish - 0% Asexual. 100% Down Bad Bisexual. Attracted to any remotely hot person: Ronan, Gansey, Blue, Orla, Helen, Colin Greenmantle, Random Guy in Car Magazine

Hi! I'm Tea (although I will accept being called Jemima Puddle-Duck, or Georgie-Girl).
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this country, Australia. Hi! What are the ro's sexualities?
jinwol doesn't have a specific label on his sexuality. he's so weighed down by expectations (both societal and internal) i'd say he's somewhere in the range of demisexual? he's been following a path from a young age where he'll be expected to marry a young lady from a prestigious family and have children etc, but his crush on the mc is specifically Not That which severely confuses him. (basically he keeps telling himself it's never going to happen! so he doesn't have to think about it! right? RIGHT?!?!?) he's never experienced attraction for anyone else either, so the poor guy is just a tangled mess.
yul i would say is probably bisexual, but their attraction for others is completely overshadowed with their obsession with the mc. they'll find people attractive but their brain is consistently running comparisons and ultimately end with the conclusion "but they're not the mc so they don't matter" which is neither healthy nor helpful, but it is what it is HAHAHA
iseul is bisexual with a preference for (older) women! she's a people lover in general, and i think she has a tendency to develop puppy crushes that she subconsciously knows are impossible to attain. she has a very idealized view of love in the sense that she's always believed she'll sweep someone off their feet one day and have a fairytale romance. i think that's also why she's pretty clueless when it comes to her own attraction to others.
??? doesn't have a specific label for their sexuality, they'll find people attractive and experience sexual attraction but hardly ever experience romantic attraction. i guess they're somewhat aromantic in that sense? they've had a serious partner before, but it ended pretty badly. i also think they mix up attraction and hatred quite frequently so in general their relationship with the mc is just messy JASJFSFJS
