Midway in our life's journey, I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself alone in a dark wood. How shall I say what wood that was! I never saw so drear - so rank - so arduous a wilderness!
- Dante Alighieri Inferno (1308) canto I, l. 1-3. Translation (1954) by John Ciardi. Oil painting (1814) by Caspar David Friedrich.

At night
while he slept
I planted stars
in the ground
that-
they might
grow up to become
galaxies
and spell out
my own revolving love letter

Book Review
Title: Nocturnal Author: Wilder Poetry
No. of Pages: 176
ISBN: 978-1-5248-5096-8
Synopsis:
The poems of Nocturnal—newly revised and expanded—are constellations to guide those on a journey of healing and self-discovery, no matter how dark the night. From @wilderpoetry comes a heavily expanded revised edition of Nocturnal, a collection of poetry and beautifully illustrated black-and-white imagery inspired by darkened days and sleepless nights. Poetry meets presentation in each of the four sections ("Dusk," "Northern Lights," "Howl," "Lucid Dreams,"), which trace the author's continuing journey of self-discovery while illuminating a path for others along the way. Ink stains, landscapes, dreamlike animals, blackened pages, and textured spreads create a multifaceted reading experience. And true to the moniker, these poems are linked by a motif of "the wild." Celebrating the art of self-love poetry with both word and image, Nocturnal will leave readers comforted, curious, and inspired to explore the world around them.

What did I think of the book?
Nocturnal by Wilder Poetry My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 of 5 stars For a while, I'd been wanting to read Nocturnal, but couldn't find it at the book store. Now some time later, this book was given to me as a gift for the holidays. I'd read wilder's Golden back in July, and absolutely loved that book! It seems fitting to have read Nocturnal in the Winter, where the days are darker and colder, and night time is a constant. The book gives me that feeling of laying under the stars in the grass when the air is cold and quiet. Everything feels still. I think it would be more immersive to read before bed time or when stargazing. It took me longer to really get into this one compared to Golden, but once again, the book has a beautiful aesthetic, and I loved the artwork throughout. The two books are (literally) night and day for me, both in their themes, but also just their vibes. Rather than heart-bursting excitement towards Nocturnal as I was with Golden, this book has left me with more of a quiet contentment, similar to the feeling I get when I'm watching the moon, so, well done to wilder for being able to capture that with this book. Favorite poem: Part 3. Howl, page 104 - this one for me, in my opinion, was the best piece in the book. It had a lovely rhythm and a beautiful choice of words. (Also, -wolf). Favorite page: 56 What drew me to this book? The book's moon/night time-related theme of its cover. Stars: 4/5 because like with any works of poetry, some are to my taste, and others not as much.
