You locked gazes with him in the low lighting as soon as you entered the room before you quickly looked away in embarrassment. He was stood to the side like he usually was when these things were starting up, welcoming conversations with the other residents with a broad smile and a listening ear, though his eyes kept flickering back to you whenever you managed to glance at him, making you blush and look away every time. James Buchanan Barnes. That was what Miss Morris told you all to call him. James or Mr Barnes. But, when Miss Morris wasn’t listening, he always insisted that you were to call him Bucky. It was what his friends called him and he wanted you and your friends to feel like he was your friend too, not some random man who was a volunteer at your own home. Because he was a friend.
He came to the home at least twice a week. Always Mondays and Fridays. Sometimes, he’d bring Steve too but, most of the time, it’d be just him. And... What was special about him was the fact that he had never treated anyone in there like children. Even the children. You’d seen him before, talking to the younger residents as if they were miniature adults as he played with them, and it warmed your heart. He was a sweet man. And he definitely made all of the girls swoon.
The usual fluorescent white lights were replaced with what your friends called ‘mood lighting’ and you could almost feel the music float around the room as it played from the record player in the corner. Not too loud, not too soft. Just... Perfect. As you looked around the room, you noticed a few of your friends were already dotted around, swaying around the makeshift dance floor mindlessly with absent smiles, and you couldn’t help but chuckle. Nights like these were always your favourites. So full of laughter and conversation that you wished every night could be like this but, at the same time, you knew that not having these nights all of the time made them even more special.
But Bucky... God, Bucky Barnes. He was undoubtedly the highlight of these nights. He never missed them, always taking time out of his own life to attend and help out, and you could never understand why. Was there nothing better he could do with his evenings? Not that you or anyone else were complaining, of course. You were always excited to see him. Him with his eyes and his smile and his chuckles that, more often than not, turned into uproarious laughter...
It was safe to say that you had a crush on the apparently-famous heartbreaker of Brooklyn. You and all of the other girls at the resident home. Some of them did prefer Steve when he tagged along and the poor boy would always be so flustered around them but you... You never looked at anyone else. Besides Steve, no-one else had ever treated you in the way Bucky had, not even your own parents when they visited, God bless them though. While everyone else babied you and tended you to help you with every little thing, Bucky liked to challenge you and treated you as who you were - a girl his age - and, when Miss Morris wasn’t looking, he’d flirt with you too. You were certain he did it with everyone but it still made you feel special.
“Hey there, doll.”
Finding yourself at the refreshments table, you jumped in your wheelchair at the sudden voice and turned your head in the direction towards it, only to be greeted with Bucky and his adorable apologetic smile, his blue eyes sparkling in the low light. Your heart thundered as your y/e/c eyes met his. You hadn’t even realised he walked over to you until he spoke up, you were far too busy daydreaming about him. Flustered, you smiled too.
“H-Hi, Bucky,” you stammered and cursed under your breath as you did so but he just chuckled.
He leant across the table to pluck two cups from the stack, retrieving a paper straw for you, and you watched him pour punch into them before looking out at the room, noticing how loud your surroundings had become as more of your fellow residents arrived. You didn’t even know what you were celebrating tonight but you loved seeing everyone happy.
“Here you are, sweetheart,” Bucky said, pulling your attention back to him, as he sat on a chair beside you and held out your drink.
“Thanks, Bucky,” you replied and took a sip before he placed it aside for you. “No Steve tonight?”
Bucky shook his head. “He wanted to come but his ma took a turn for the worst so he’s lookin’ after her.”
You frowned and watched as Bucky sipped his drink, his eyes wandering over the growing crowd with a content smile on his face. You loved how much he cared about the people no-one else seemed to think twice about, especially the little kids who had been abandoned by their parents because they’d been born with something that made them different. To everyone in the resident home, he was the older brother they needed, he gave them the love and care that they deserved and, in that moment, when you were staring at him in the low light, you realised that that was why you’d fallen for him. No-one you’d ever known was as kind-hearted and loving as he was.
You both lost track of time as you sat together, talking about anything and everything you could think about, even though you both knew everything about each other already, when you noticed that the record player had stopped playing the generic jazz tunes that these nights were usually full of and instead was playing a sweet, soft tune. You turned to look back at Bucky, going to ask him if he knew what the song was, but he was already stood in front of you with his arm outstretched for you. Your face turned bright red under his stare. This wasn’t an unfamiliar position you found yourself in, you and Bucky danced together every time these nights happened. He danced with every girl in the resident home to make them feel special and you loved that about him.
But this time was different.
The way he stared at you was different. There was a gleam in his blue eyes that you didn’t recognise, something behind his boyish smile you found hard to decipher. Normally, the two of you would crack a joke as he asked you to dance but it didn’t seem to be the right time tonight.
“How ‘bout a dance, doll?” he asked as the singer started singing above the music.
You found yourself at a loss for words so you nodded and his smile grew twice its size as he bent down to help you to your feet. You smiled at him and reached up to brush his hair from his eyes but shrieked out laughing as he spun you off of your feet, fluidly situating you both onto the dance floor before he set you back on the ground. Your face burned scarlet and your heart was singing along to the song as you wrapped your arms around his neck, his hands holding your waist delicately as you swayed to the music together. Bucky started to hum along as you stared into each other’s eyes in the low light. Your heart sped up. You didn’t know what he was doing, what lurked behind everything he did tonight, but you did know one thing as you danced and danced.
You were falling deeper and deeper for Bucky Barnes.
“Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm. And your cheeks so soft,” he sung softly, moving to rest his forehead on yours, and you felt your breath catch in your throat. “There is nothing for me but to love you... And the way you look tonight.”
“Bucky...” you whispered.
It felt like a dream. You could’ve sworn you’ve had this dream before. Since you first met him, you’ve wanted this, so why were you scared at the prospect of it finally coming true?
Were you scared though? Scared didn’t feel like the right word for how you felt but you couldn’t think of what you meant, not with him taking over all of your senses. Everything within you screamed for you to do something, to do the thing that was in every one of your favourite novels. You felt almost as if you would never survive the night if you didn’t. But you were frozen. You couldn’t do it.
So he did it instead.
For a moment, it was just you two on the dance floor, it was just you two in the room, swaying to the sweet song that played from the record player, as Bucky’s blue eyes pierced into your own y/e/c eyes. Then they darted to your lips for a brief second and your heart sped up. You hoped he couldn’t hear its thumping as he leaned in closer and pressed his lips onto yours.
You were surprised that your lips knew how to respond when they had never been kissed before but you weren’t complaining, especially when he pulled you in closer. You felt lightheaded in the best way possible during the kiss, you found yourself wanting more and more as the seconds passed and a frown fell upon your lips as he pulled away, which made him chuckle. He kissed your forehead before placing his on it again and, as you stared into his eyes in the mood lighting, you knew everything he was thinking. He didn’t have to utter a single word.
It didn’t matter what Miss Morris thought. You were Bucky’s girl now.

On Doctor Who, Disability and Davros
Russel T Davies in Doctor Who: Unleashed, Children in Need Special
We had long conversations about bringing Davros back because he's a fantastic character. Time and society and culture and taste has moved on, and there's a problem with the Davros of old in that he's a wheelchair user who is evil...
...and I've had problems with that, and a lot of us on the production had problems with that, of associating disability with evil and, trust me, there's a very long tradition of this.
I'm not blaming people in the past at all, but the world changes and when the world changes, Doctor Who has to change as well.
So we made the choice to bring back Davros without the facial scarring and without the wheelchair, or his support unit, which functions as a wheelchair. I say this is how we see Davros now. This is what he looks like. This is 2023. This is our lens. This is our eye. Things used to be in black and white, they're not in black and white anymore. And Davros used to look like that and he looks like this now. And that we are absolutely standing by.
I think, because it's Children in Need night, it's a night where issues of disability or otherness or being excluded from society come right to the front of the conversation. So, of all the nights to make this change, I thought it was absolutely vital to do this, and I'm very very proud of the fact that we have.
Russell talking about disability representation in Doctor Who, straight away, in the very first episode is making me feel things.
Do I agree with everything he's said about disability representation and villains, absolutely (see every James Bond film/book.)
Do I agree with their approach to Davros? Maybe, maybe not. It's a very complicated topic on which I do not have the lived experience to speak.
But they are thinking about it. And they clearly care. And that fills me with so much hope for the future.
N.B. I copied the interview transcript from the current BBC iPlayer subtitles. All inaccuracies and emphasis are my own. Please let me know of any errors.

An Islamic chaplain at Toronto’s main pediatric hospital was under scrutiny on Thursday after video emerged of him encouraging parents to show their children a clip of the founder of Hamas predicting the eventual destruction of the State of Israel.
The video clip — unearthed by the Washington, DC-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) — showed imam Ayman Taher praising remarks made by the late Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the founder of Hamas, in a 1998 interview with the Qatari-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera.
“If you did not watch this, Google it and watch it, let your children watch it, because this is history that needs to be absorbed,” Taher — who serves as the Islamic chaplain of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and as imam of the Ibrahim Jame Mosque in Hamilton, Ontario — stated during a Dec. 18 speech at Palestine House in Toronto, the headquarters of a nonprofit organization that caters to the Palestinian community in Canada.
“When [Al Jazeera correspondent] Ahmed Mansour was asking Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, he said to him: ‘Sheikh…’ And the sheikh was barely out of Israeli jails, by the way. He said to him: ‘Do you believe that Israel will [be] finished?’ He [Yassin] said to him with confidence: ‘Yes.’ He [Mansour] said to him: ‘When do you think it will [be] finished?’ He [Yassin] said: ‘2027.’ And I said to myself: ‘How calm, how confident this man is.'”
Taher went on to eulogize Yassin, a wheelchair-bound cleric whom Israel held responsible for the deaths of several Israeli citizens and who was killed in a March 2004 Israeli strike on Gaza City.
“Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was handicapped,” Taher said. “The only thing that moved in him was his tongue. Allah gave him that faith to speak his mind and inspire the generations to come. In the most difficult time, when his own life was not safe, and we know how Allah has honored him.”
He said that when Yassin “was in jail and after that when he was living in very difficult times, he never had doubt that Allah is going to give victory to his religion, we [also] should not, because he has inspired millions.”
He then added:  “I know I am getting myself in trouble now for speaking on social media. Who cares, because if [we] do not get ourselves into trouble, we will not be getting victory.”
A spokesperson for the Hospital for Sick Children said in a statement shared with The Algemeiner that Taher had been placed on paid leave as a result of the video.
“Concerns about comments made by a member of the Spiritual and Religious Care Department at SickKids related to the war in Israel and Gaza and shared on social media have been brought to our attention,” the statement noted. “We of course take this extremely seriously and are investigating as per SickKids’ Code of Conduct. The individual is on a paid leave while we investigate. For confidentiality reasons we are unable to share any additional information.”
The hospital added that “all who come to SickKids are entitled to be treated with respect, professionalism and feel safe.”
Reacting to the announcement of an investigation into Taher, one X/Twitter user responded indignantly, “What is there to investigate? It’s right there in black and white. SickKids that should have acted before now. Repugnant.”

Recently rewatched M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” which I actually think is one of his better films. But it got me thinking about how even for all of the crap he gets for his mostly garbage filmography, it surprises me that I never see anyone mentioning the blatant ableism that exists in almost all of his movies save maybe, “Signs”. The one time I remember folks pointing it out was when he released “Split”, which was probably his most egregious display of ableism. But it truly shows up in almost every other one of his movies, and sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who notices. (Even though I’m sure I’m not)
Here’s some examples:
6th Sense - Bruce Willis’ character, a therapist, is murdered by a patient having an episode
Unbreakable - The antagonist “supervillain” is a wheelchair user. He’s literally called Mr. Glass due to his frailty.
The Village - Adrien Brody’s character who is developmentally disabled stabs another character out of jealousy.
The Happening - The “r” slur is used in the first 5 minutes of the movie.
Split - James McAvoy’s character is someone living with DID who has a personality that causes him to kidnap teenagers.
The Visit - The antagonists are an elderly couple who have escaped from an asylum and murdered another couple to take their place.
Old - A character with Schizophrenia becomes confused and irrational and murders someone.
I haven’t seen all of his films but I wouldn’t be surprised if more examples existed in those. Anyway I just wanted to bring it up because it bothers me.

I love learning things about characters I didn’t know and not just canon stuff but history of publishing and what goes behind the scenes with editorial. Originally Barbara was created for the the tv show to replace the love interest role for Catwoman. They had casted Eartha Kitt as the new Catwoman and since segregation was still happening in certain parts of the country they wanted to cast a white woman to play a love interest so their show could continue to be played in certain states. Catwoman went from love interest to a more villainous role and Barbara was introduced. Instead of being Bruce’s love interest she set herself apart and really shinned on her own to the point that she ended not as the love interest but and icon in her own right. When they made the move to comics there were still comics that paired her with Bruce (they are married in one of them) and in another she briefly dated Clark Kent. She was given a couple of backups and was the reason comics started using The Batfamily. Before she was introduced, Jim Gordon had a son who accompanied him but he was written out. Another son existed that was an older brother to Barbara but was written out as well. Later a younger brother would be added but he comes and goes given the continuity.
Ohhh! I didn't know that's why she was created I was aware that originally in the comics she was Commissioner Gordons niece, whom he adopted. And that her brother James Gordon Jr in a serial killer, which is very interesting.
Im loving hearing all this Barbara history! I mostly focus on her post injury. As I relate to get heavily as a wheelchair user. But that means I've never really dove into her before than so all this bee info is awesome, truly it is just great!

A wheelchair user who crawled down metal steps from a plane when no-one could help him disembark has described the incident as "unacceptable".
Adrian Keogh, from Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland, was told assistance would take an hour to arrive after his flight landed at Landvetter Airport in Sweden on Saturday.
Mr Keogh said cabin crew on the Ryanair flight told him he could crawl from the aircraft instead of waiting.
He has used a wheelchair since 2015.
The airport has apologised and Ryanair said it was looking into the incident.
Mr Keogh, who has a spinal injury following a construction accident, told BBC News NI he was not able to wait for an hour for assistance disembarking the plane as he was in pain after the flight and needed to use the bathroom.
He was travelling with his brother who offered to carry him down the stairs but Mr Keogh declined as he felt that would be too dangerous.
"They were steep, corrugated steel steps," he said.
"If he fell we would have both been hurt so I had to bunny-hop down myself."
Mr Keogh said air travel as a wheelchair user could sometimes be frustrating.
"This is not the first time I've been stuck on a plane after everyone else has disembarked," he said.
"It's unacceptable - all I ask for is to be able to travel with dignity."
'It happened again': Wheelchair-users left on planes
Wheelchair user 'humiliated' by airline treatment
James Taylor of disability equality charity Scope described the incident as appalling.
"For a long time we've been concerned about disabled people being failed by airlines and airports," he said.
"The impact is often degrading, stressful and anxiety-inducing and stops some disabled people from travelling altogether."
'Several unforeseen events'
Landvetter Airport apologised and said it "deeply regrets" Mr Keogh's experience, blaming "several unforeseen events" for the delay in assistance.
A spokesperson told BBC News NI the long waiting time was "not up to our usual standard of service".
Ryanair said special assistance at the airport was provided by a third-party service provider.
The airline said it was looking into the incident.
Similar issues have been reported at other airports, including by the BBC's security editor Frank Gardner, who was left on a plane at Heathrow Airport.

Just some Stranger Things headcanons
Steves six kids are named, in order from oldest to youngest, Steve Jr, Heather, Jessica, James, Lauren, and Brandon. He is incredibly uncreative so he just gives them all basic names for the time. He didn’t want to name any of his kids after friends because he thought it was too sappy. Jessica’s middle name is Robin tho. Steve Jr just gets called Junior because Steve is just such a Dad(tm) that he’d do that.
In general Steve is just your stereotypical capital D dad and says all the dad things and is mad embarrassing
Max, after recovering (she is recovering or else I will end the world) is blind and an ambulatory wheelchair user. She can walk, but it can be painful after some time. She considers her wheelchair as her way to “zoom everywhere.” Also she has metal rods to set her fractures and calls herself “the bionic woman”
Also, as soon as Max is allowed out of the hospital, she still insists on Lucas taking her to the movies. He is concerned about this, but she practically drags him to that. They end up having a wonderful time and Lucas gives crazy detailed descriptions of what’s going on screen to Max. This becomes a tradition for them.
Will does finally outright come out to Mike, but Byler doesn’t immediately happen after that. Mike says that it’s nothing about Will being gay, and that he doesn’t think he could break up with El. Eventually El amicably breaks up with him and Byler is finally requited.
Jonathan and Nancy do end up going to different colleges, but not as far apart as they originally thought. They eventually end up working at the same big city paper and later in life become an award winning husband-wife investigative journalist duo.

BROOOO
I GET TI BRAINROT ABOUT MY OCS AND NOBODY CAN SAY ANYTHING BECAUSE ITS MY BIRTHDAY MUAHAHAHA I AM THE BIRTHDAY BOY NOW!!!
Quincy James: Captain of the Stone, ex-stoner, accidentally adopted his entire crew. He defected from the military for how his superiors treated his crew, taking the Stone (and his adopted children) with him. They are legally considered fugitives but nobody actually pursues them.
Kelsey King: A part of an alien race that takes on animal traits. They are a cat. And they are the ships doctor! Very sarcastic, and easily tired. Will state and explain boundaries, the military did not like that.
Alexander Sanders: Same alien race as Kelsey, but he is a cow. joined the millitary fresh outta high school to try to get college paid for, as well as to try to get gender affirming care. Unfortunately he was not given gender affirming care until he was stationed on the Stone as the Navigations Officer. Very anxious, and will cry if you touch his equipment. Supposedly Quincy's favorite kid.
Feather: Bird lady, local comms officer. Incredibly sheltered growing up, and also neglected. Very extroverted and easily excitable.
Melissa Quinn: Weapons Officer. Developed POTS after a traumatic head injury, is also autistic. Will take out your knees with a crutch 0 hesitation. Ambulatory wheelchair user. Sent to the Stone due to the POTS, stayed because nobody was an ableist jerk.
Mara: elf lady. Assassin and secind in command to Quincy. Heavily modified her uniform, and command sent her to the Stone for disciplinary infractions.
Lisa: a kid they picked up during accidental time travel. Lost a leg due to infection, and uses a prosthetic. One of the major incidents leading to the Stone defecting.
Thats really all of them. I love them sm and they're my lil scrunkles ajsbsvnsbsjdjsb

Dalgliesh: The Black Tower
Tumblr media
As you all know I am in the habit of reading round commentary and reviews online before blogging about a show, and I saw an absolutely hysterical review about this show which meant that it simply had to have a blog post even though it may not strictly be cult. The review said that the characters are the most thoroughly umpleasant people you could ever wish to meet, and the writer queried whether it was even possible to get that many unpleasant people together, but then he said he didn't live in England, so he doesn't know. Oh, we do unpleasant. The food is merely a sort of unpleasant amuse bouche before you meet the people. That's the other reason we had an empire: it was to get away from here and get some sun. The full series is five episodes, but I'm only going to do one blog post for reasons which will appear below.
The Black Tower (1985) is part of the ITV series of adaptations of PD James novels (1983 to 1998) and is one of the ones starring Roy Marsden as Dalgliesh. It adapts James's 1975 novel of the same name.
The plot is essentiallly that Dalgliesh gets asked to investigate the events in a very unusual nursing home. It is run on quasi-religious grounds by Wilfred Anstey who himself experienced a miraculous cure and devoted his life to this. The events are essentially murderous and so we have wheelchairs with their users hurtling off cliffs, climbing ropes partly cut through, an epidemic of poison pen letters and of course the entire cast all hate each other really. Thus far it probably sounds like any Golden Age mystery set in an enclosed setting where the characters start getting murdered and the detective has to work out what's happening.
However (and this is pertinent to both the book and the adaptation) this isn't one of your one-dimensional mysteries by Miss Christie (don't send me hate mail please). P D James's books are never straight detective stories and she has a fine eye for the human elements involved in the story. A nursing home of course gives us lots of potential for strong emotions, jealousy, frustration, the difficulties of ageing and illness, and indeed these all come out. James is also incredibly good at putting sex into her plots in a nuanced way which helps the plot. The reason I think this point is so important is that both the book and this adaptation are criticised for being rather slow and not getting to the action quickly enough.
I think that that is to miss the point here. I mentioned the crit that the entire cast are all thoroughly unpleasant, and I think the slowness of the mystery is deliberate. The fact that it takes the whole of the first episode before it gets to the first murder is to give us time to experience the dreadful, contained, slow feeling of being ill, in care, and not in control. That is the real genius of this show: we genuinely feel how much we would hate Toynton Grange if we were actually resident there. The slowness of exposition also gives us a fine insight into the dynamics among the residents which gives us something to get our teeth into when trying to work out who is doing the murders.
One of the most important elements of the show is the very difficult one of the religious aspect. Because Anstey's miraculous healing was religious he has given the home a religious...I want to say veneer, but we are clearly invited to think about how deep the veneer goes for the various characters. None of the characters is RC but nonetheless they all go on pilgrimage to Lourdes. Perhaps most bizarrely the staff of the Grange wear brown Franciscan-style habits as their uniform. James cleverly sets this up in a way which means the reader/viewer can understand it however they wish depending on their own religious understanding. This is some quality writing here, and there is none of the experience that so often happens when TV shows try to depict religion, that you see grating things wrong with it. Instead the religious practice here is one which can't possibly be real, and that's the point. This approach is so brilliant that I wish TV shows would use it more often.
I think there is one element of the plot which may be seen differently now from the 1970s and 1980s: I think the events of the succeeding years have persuaded more people that religion and religious people are not always what they seem to be. Perhaps the 21st century viewer may give much less credence to the religious aspect of the home and be more inclined to see it as fake. This was always of course a possible way to interpret Anstey's motives, so it wouldn't be a view which was impossible forty years ago. Certainly I think the central revelation that what Anstey is doing in the tower in the afternoons is not meditation as such but amusing himself with his collection of jazz magazines, will certainly not come as a shock nowadays.
James's heavy investment in character and motivation means that this show avoids a straightforward device of having characters who are clearly moral and immoral. The nuanced understanding of the characters' emotions and lives means that this show is gripping, and avoids the disappointment for the viewer of setting up heroes only to knock them down again.
I've been wracking my brain trying to find a criticism of this show and I really don't have one, except that unless you're used to TV of the past it would seem too slow to you.
I highly recommend this excellent drama.
