While I loved the IFYLITA finale and thought it was beautiful and well done, I didn't get misty-eyed. But that single tear dropping from Shiro's eye in WDYEY after looking at folded laundry and an unasked-for thoughtful household purchase wrecked me.

This has become the "oh right I still have this to catch up with!" show for me and I love it.

OKAY I TAKE IT BACK here comes the oil I was missing! idk that I'd heat sesame oil that much (I'd use smoking-hot neutral oil and add a little sesame oil at the end, after the hot oil has been poured over the fish?) but ANYWAY. very much the Japanese version of a Chinese dish, I'd still try that if I could get the fish.

oh these new-fangled burial sites? memorial halls? not even sure how to call them but I feel like they're a neat solution. You’re feeling a bit better than yesterday but a part of you is still upset. You woke up this morning feeling good but it washes away when you recall last nights events. Sitting up, you grabbed your phone from the nightstand, and Scaramouche never texted you once. Your breath shakes and you get up to start the day.

Currently, you are eating lunch with Thoma since it’s break. You’ve been spacing out but working on your art project distracted you. You ate and stared at the table. Thoma is concerned for you and he decides to ask, “What’s wrong?” You look up at him and the guilt surfaces. “Uh, well…” You put your fork down and hold your hands. “Scaramouche and I got into a fight.” Thoma gains a shocked expression. “Oh no. I’m sorry, yn.” You smile forcibly. “It’s okay.”

Then, you frown again. “Thoma, I have to tell you something.” He tilts his head a little. “What is it?” You look around before leaning towards him and whispered, “I know.” He blinks. “Know what?” You look around again. “Not here.” You say and get up, gathering your things and throwing your trash away. Thoma follows you and throws away his stuff too. You lead him to the lounge and sit on the couch. He sits next to you still confused.

“Thoma, I know about you and Diluc.” Suddenly, his face went white. He shook and picked on his skin as he chuckled awkwardly. “H-How did-How did you find out?” You took out your phone and show him the message you received. He grew more and more anxious as he read the article, word for word. Thoma looks away and you take it as a sign that he doesn’t want to read it anymore.

Putting your phone away, you place a hand on top of his, mostly to stop him from hurting his skin. “I wont tell Diluc, I promise.” Thoma nods. “You don’t have to explain yourself to me. I’m letting you know because I don’t want to keep it a secret from you.” You caressed his hand. “You’re a good guy so I’ll do whatever you want me to do with this information.” Thoma sighs and thinks for a moment. He looks at you and asks, “Are you the only one who knows?” You shook your head. “Scaramouche knows but I doubt he’ll say anything.” ‘Hopefully.’

Thoma nods again. “It’s pretty sad. Our history.” You frown and give him a tight hug. “I’m sorry.” He hugs back and buries his face in your shoulder. “It’s okay.” He says, softly. You both pull away from each other. “Enough of that,” You say. “I want to show you how my projects going.” Thoma smiles. “I’m pretty excited.” He tells you. You get out your phone once more and show him a photo of your artwork. He gasps, “Woah, that’s so good!” You blushed. “Is it? You don’t think it’s too much?” He shakes his head. “Of course not. You’re very talented.”

You smile and look at the piece as well. “I’m sure Scaramouche agrees.” Those words made you gasp and turn to him. Thoma only smiled at you and you couldn’t help but look at your drawing again. The bell rings and Thoma stands up to leave. “Are you coming?” He asks since you didn’t move. “You go without me.” You say and he nods, leaving you on your own. You bit your bottom lip. Slowly, you opened Scaramouche’s contact and stared at the keyboard.

Your finger went to press a key but you stopped when you received a message.

2024 Watch List pt2

Mr Unlucky has no choice but to kiss - Very, very cute and silly without being slapstick. This gets a bit lost in its own soup and after about episode 4 it drags some. Also just a bizarre and somewhat anticlimactic ending. The leads are lovely though and they do work well together. 3/5 (22/2/24)

What did you eat yesterday S1 - Just perfect. Watching Shiro & Kenji grow together over the episodes is a treat. This is as warm and tender as it is brilliantly observed and funny. A true must watch. 5/5 (24/2/24)

The Sign - This just got lost in itself. It had moments of absolute perfection but there were, for me, too many threads it didn’t tie up. Personally I liked this show the most in its procedural show parts and less in its fantasy elements, where I feel it had the most work to do. This isn’t one I’ll rewatch but I did enjoy the journey. 3/5 (25/2/24)

If it’s with you - Lovely is the best word for this. Just a little warm hug of a thing. A sweet story of first love. 4/5 (26/2/24)

I became the main role of a BL drama - Very soft and silly. Not much happens but the leads are lovely and fun to watch. Would kind of love a spin off about the managers if I’m honest. Zero complaints. Just a cute, easy, quick watch. 3/5 (27/2/24)

Kabe Koji - Very enjoyable. Absolutely loved the manga come to life concept of this one. It was super fun to look at. Personally, I think this could have done with maybe 1 or 2 more episodes. Neither character felt as explored as I would have liked. A nice watch nonetheless :) 3/5 (27/2/24)

The Man who defies the world of BL s1 & 2 - This is so unbelievably funny and well observed. Atsuhiro is a master at comedic faces and they never feel slapstick or overdone. Loved every silly second. 4/5 (28/2/24)

Candy Colour Paradox - This isn’t the best acted thing and the chemistry is only so-so it also really starts to drag in places. (Inserting Izuka Kenta into a multiple episode arc was a choice because he’s incredible and it only serves to highlight the so-so of the leads.) Having said all these things it still has a charm and I still enjoyed watching it. Just perhaps not one I’ll be itching to rewatch or suggest to friends. 3/5 (28/2/24)

Perfect Propose - A sweet six episode watch that’s really all about being human. Kai has to realise that being part of peoples lives is both terrifying but necessary and Hiro must learn to value the role he plays in the world. Just a gorgeous little watch. 4/5 (1/3/24)

Kei x Yaku - Is this a BL? Not really? It’s more like gay romance is heavily inferred but here is a messed up, lovely little found family so enjoy that. This is so much fun and I can’t rec it highly enough. Very much just tune in and have fun. 4/5 (1/3/24)

My Personal Weatherman - Just bored me honestly. It’s not bad but it’s not as good as some make it out to be. I think if I’d watched this before the novelist I might have liked it more? Not something I’ll reach for again. 3/5 (3/3/24)

My Beautiful Man s1&2 - This is very Japanese and, on paper, should not have worked for me at all. In practice tho? I loved this. I understand the reasons this is controversial but I also think if you go into this without any of the disk horse you’ll just see it for what it is; a love story between two broken boys with piss poor communication skills and self esteem issues. 4/5 (5/3/24)

My Beautiful Man Eternal - This movie is the third part of the beautiful man series. I genuinely think you could skip s2 and go straight in for this. It delivers what I would have wanted, but was impossible to give in four episodes, from s2. We see Hira and Kiyoi’s growth as individuals and also together and we finish with them as equals, with Kiyoi speaking to his king Hira. Beautifully shot, excellently acted. OH NOOOOOOOO NOT THE SHIBUYA ARC. THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE WARNED WOULD HURT MY FEELINGS

Ohhhhhhh my god. Nobara being asked advice from this gal about asking Yuji out and immediately bringing Megumi back to the restaurant. I LOVE SCHOOL DRAMA

Yuji praying over the person who was killed 😭💞 HIM!!

"Domain Amplification. It's the same principle as the New Shadow School's simple domain. They envelope themselves with the domain. A/N: I have no idea what the actual FBI policy is like for agents with mental illnesses. This story is complete fiction.

Spencer stands outside Gideon’s office, his arms wrapped around himself, hunched over as he digs one toe into the carpet. He’s been out there for about 15 minutes, but hasn’t managed to make himself knock on the door yet. Before his brain can take him in circles one more time, the door opens, and Gideon steps out.

“Reid?” he says. “Is there something I can help you with?”

Spencer stares at him with wide eyes, and then he swallows and nods. “There’s something I need to speak to you about,” he says. “When you have a chance.”

“I was just going to grab some food and bring it back to my office to eat. Would you like to join me for lunch?”

“Yes, please,” says Spencer. “I’ll—I have my lunch in the fridge. I’ll go get it.”

Ten minutes later they are both seated in Gideon’s office, Gideon at his desk, Spencer in a chair across from him. Gideon gives him a reassuring smile.

“What did you want to talk about?”

Spencer fidgets anxiously and looks past Gideon’s ear—his best approximation of eye contact.

“I saw a new doctor yesterday,” he says softly.

“What kind of doctor?” Gideon asks, cutting to the chase, and Spencer cringes a little.

“A specialist,” he says vaguely.

“Spencer.”

“A psychiatrist.”

“Okay.” Gideon pauses. “Is there more you wanted to say about that?”

Spencer nods.

“I’m here whenever you’re ready,” Gideon says kindly. “Take your time, okay?”

Spencer nods again. “It’s, um. I got a…new diagnosis.”

“Okay.”

“Did you know my mom has schizophrenia?” he asks, veering slightly off course.

“I had heard something to that effect, yes,” says Gideon. “She’s institutionalized?”

“Yeah. I did that to her, when I was 18. She couldn’t live on her own anymore.”

Gideon nods. “That sounds difficult.”

“I have schizophrenia,” Spencer blurts out. “That’s what the doctor told me. I’ve been seeing her for…for several months now.”

“Several months?” Gideon sounds surprised. “Have you suspected that something was going on?”

Spencer nods. “I haven’t felt like myself for a long time,” he admits. “And lately the symptoms have become a little bit more…distressing. So I thought I should talk to someone about it.”

“You did the right thing, Spencer. I’m proud of you.”

Spencer stares at him. “Why are you proud of me?” he asks. “I’m sick.”

“I’m proud of you for seeking out help when you needed it,” Gideon says. “Are you continuing to see your psychiatrist?”

“Yes,” Spencer says quietly. “I see her weekly.”

“Is she starting you on medication?”

Spencer nods. “I, um, I started it last night,” he says.

“How are you feeling?”

“About the same.” Spencer shrugs. “It’s only been one day.”

“That’s fair.”

“Am I going to have to leave my job?” Spencer suddenly asks. “Am I—is this the end of my BAU career?”

Gideon frowns. “I don’t see why it would be,” he says. “Some aspects of your job may need to be reevaluated, but overall, you are an asset to the Bureau. As long as you don’t have active symptoms that are getting in the way of your work, and you’re willing to take time off when you are having symptoms, I think you should be just fine.”

“Thank you, sir,” Spencer says, staring down at his lap. When he looks up at Gideon, his eyes are shining. “Just…thank you.”

“You’re going to be okay,” Gideon promises. “Don’t ever forget that we’re all here for you, all right?”

“Thank you,” Spencer repeats one more time.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? is just something else. These two make me so emotional.

The love, there's so much love here. This episode was just so lovely. I don't have the right words to articulate my feelings at the moment, but my heart is so full.

Episode 2 of WDYEY S2 has me all up in my feelings about all the milestones I always knew I would never aspire to hit and how that makes me seem immature or unwilling to grow up to allo hetero normies lol like, I've never in my life wanted or expected I would have a wedding, kids, driver's license, or car or home ownership. And while I do have queer friends who do want those things, I've never had my certainty questioned on them or expected to justify my lack of interest in queer spaces the way I am elsewhere. And it's so jarring to be asked. I'm not out to my dad, but I am to my mom, and my whole family knows not to question me about my dating situation at any given time to avoid having that conversation in front of him. My brother gets the "when are you getting married and having kids" questions and I never do, and I am grateful for that shield but it's also a bit alienating, to know there's a part of my life my family doesn't want to know about (partially for my safety, but still).

I don't really have a point except to say that this show is so good at being so comforting and soft even while its undercurrent is deeply sad.

Also, I did this mental exercise once for myself and it made me feel better so I'm going to share it here!

Alternative milestones to measure your life by

Learned a skill as an adult you gave up on as a kid

Done something that really scared you but you knew would be good and that you feel proud of for doing it

This was another lovely slice-of-life episode. Death is something they'll probably grapple with quite a bit this season – it's been a recurring theme, after all – but we also get to see so much of the love these two have for each other. It's beautiful.

I really, really loved seeing Shirou-san opening up more and more over the course of this season so far, and this episode was another highlight. We can see him thinking, considering, and we can see how much he loves Kenji, and it just makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over because he started up so closed off, so buttoned up. and now look at him! ✨ growth ✨

okay so dream did a discord podcast for a few hours, and these are the highlights that come to mind:

most importantly, he seems VERY confident that george will be there within the next month or so. george applied for the visa late 2021, and things have happened recently to move things along. he wasn't specific, but he said that he'd delete his channel (and eat a sock) if they didn't have a 2022 dteam christmas

when asked about his post face reveal travel plans, he mentioned 'obviously' being in california in october (twitchcon) - they're assuming george will be in america early oct/late sept

they're not currently living in the dteam house cos they're waiting for george

he also talked a bit about himself (he'll prob get a haircut before the face reveal but he still likes it long, he's been enjoying keeping his stubble lately, he has sharp/pronounced [but not rly thick] eyebrows, and lots of small freckles)

he's okay with sapnap being in nc because he knows he can't DO much with sapnap atm apart from watching sports and hanging out on discord, which they're still doing plenty anyway

george wants to recreate the gator photo

dream says he'll do lots of solo tiktok content (prayge)

he talked briefly about s2 for lore (he went off to write down an idea at one point lol) and mentioned it would be a continuation

oh and he wants to facetime george when george tells him about the visa cos that way george will see his face before they meet irl

he mentioned as well that he calls himself dream sometimes and that dream is just as much his name as clay is :'''')

you know what's growth? rn there is absolutely nothing airing that I'm watching, only what did you eat yesterday s2 & cooking crush that's starting tomorrow. axelle from 1 year ago would be SCRAMBLING to watch every mediocre ass show airing atm to fill the void. now I'm just okay watching older shows & movies and leaving my 'currently watching' list short as hell. we love becoming more picky with our precious time on this earth 😌

You know, I think Dana didn't plan Belos at all in s1.

The whole eating palismen wasn't even a thing till s2. And what frustrates me about it the most is Lilith, most of her actions in s1 created a huge plot hole in s2 with that decision. He confiscates and eats all the palismen yet she's allowed to keep hers while Hunter is on a stress marathon at the idea of Belos finding Flapjack, and I couldn't care much since Lilith was right there. Same about the coven sigils, why does she not have one????? She was the freaking E.C head not just a regular.

And another plot hole about the sigils brands, one coven scout mentioned switching covens (Severine was her name don't remember the episode), was that meant to be a silly joke? Or considering that Dana voiced her, people assumed she did it to poke fun at Disney's decisions. It still creates a contradiction to the brands being permanent tho, people did consider a possibility that there's a way to debrand someone, and there should be in this case right?

Sometimes I feel like Dana cares more about hating Disney than writing sense in her story and I'm tired to pretend it's not like that, which pisses me off. Can you forget about that mouse for a damn second to consider that maybe you shouldn't write some things that make no sense? Or be aware of your time limit to not write certain things, like the freaking collector? But god forbid you'd be mad at her in this fandom smh🤦

So... I could talk about each of these subjects on their own. Belos/Philip as just a complete mess of a character and inconsistencies, Palisman and how they're a good concept that got fucked over by what this blog will actually be about and the EC/Coven system which... Holy fuck. HOOOOLY Fuck S2 fucks it up sideways.

And because I've talked some about some of these topics, here are three different blogs covering

Belos' asinine rise to power and TOH wanting to mirror historical fascism in his rise.

Talking about why people are mad about Stringbean is the closest I've actually come to talking majorly about Palisman.

And I did some talk about metatext and plain text to do with the magic tracks in TOH that is about to become VERY relevant to this blog.

It's actually your last paragraph I want to talk about though. Because... The problem isn't that Dana was too focused on hating Disney. That would only explain, realistically, the problems with S2B and S3 and the jokes at the Mouse's expense take very little time and don't really detract from the show. It is not a major issue about her as a writer.

Now before I get into what her biggest weakness, at least as you can tell from TOH, is as a writer: Don't attack creators. I am attacking her writing and criticizing it but I am not attacking her as a person or getting mad at her. Her creation does nothing offensive, nothing cruel, etc. like that. Are there problems with it? Yes. Do I have issues with how she has used excuses to shield herself and TOH from criticism? Yes. But we still need to be good people and I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone about that.

Anyways: I've talked at LENGTH about the fact that TOH has a focus problem. That it is effectively three shows at once. I even just yesterday talked about how this lack of focus damages its ability to have coherent themes because nothing is given enough time, attention or is actively contradicted eventually.

As the show runner, it's Dana's job to keep focus. To not let writers do whatever they want and keep the show consistent and in continuity with itself. Her job, effectively, is to follow a line I ADORE:

A great piece of art knows as much what it isn't as it knows what it is.

The problem is... Dana quite obviously doesn't agree with this. She appears by her writing to have a mentality that there is no idea she doesn't like. There is no statement, regardless of the contradictions it makes.

If you want to talk about how early this happens, just look at Covention. Dana, as the creative lead, should know that the covens are a very serious thing, that the nine covens are important to Belos' plans and she should know about glyph magic.

That is the episode that introduces there being potentially HUNDREDS of covens simply for the sake of a job fair joke and setting and also the power glyph EXISTS. Yes, the power glyph is used to make Amity more impressive in the fight, cranking up the spectacle, but notice how it has NEVER been brought back up? And Construction magic explicitly isn't what was described when we were first told about it? Almost like witches using paper goes against Amity's shock at seeing Luz use a piece of paper to cast a light spell.

Dana also should be the one most acutely aware of how dangerous it is for a witch to be a wild witch. How much deciding to use multiple forms of magic is hazardous to them. Well... Dana was on the writing team for First Day (linked in the metatext blog) and Reaching Out was SOLELY written by Dana. You know, an episode where Amity treats joining a coven like going to college, Alador has no objections about this and the twins both get a bad girl coven shirt like it's something to purely celebrate for them.

And if we look at what Dana hasn't explicitly written, she still doesn't appear to be willing to say no to anyone. Hollow Mind was written by other people and includes the line that the Titan was believed to be dead when Belos rising to power. In King's Tide, an episode Dana DID write, Belos talks about Luz must having been blessed by the Titan in order to have already gotten glyph combos despite Belos being the LAST person who should think the Titan is alive, especially since he's been in the things skull and made a fake religion around it.

Worse yet is that while Dana has never met an idea she doesn't like... She's never met an idea she likes enough to commit to. So much of the show is about presenting potential, even with what I've described above, but then doing nothing with it. In fact, more often than not, ESPECIALLY WITH THE COVEN SYSTEM, it will be discarded, ignored or changed for the sake of a different concept. Amity's parents are like this where Alador seems 90% on board with anything Odalia does in his first two appearances but then he's only a little neglectful but still moral come Reaching Out. We can have Luz and Amity try to have a healthy relationship and agree to not lie to each other but that would make the reveal of Luz's dad being dead so much harder so just... ignore that. It's okay that Luz is still blatantly lying and breaking her girlfriend's trust.

Remember: It was Dana's FIRST solo episode, Eda's Requiem, that setup how important the coven heads were for the sake of the Day of Unity. That even one going missing at this point would be a MAJOR problem for it.

Buuuut that is a problem that a lot of prophetic fantasy faces and usually doesn't have an answer to. It's a hard thing to have an answer as to why the heroes don't just keep one mcguffin away, let alone what TOH did with three of them being on the side of good. So what did other writers do with it when they actually had to deal with what Dana had written?

Throw that shit out in one line that implies replacing coven heads is as easy as replacing paper plates.

The show is, to put it lightly, a disaster. And you know a better show runner can do better than this because Amphibia doesn't have these contradictions. Gravity Falls doesn't have these contradictions. Hell, we go to less renowned media, to stuff like Randy Cunningham Ninth Grade Ninja or Danny Phantom and THEY don't have the same sorts of inconsistencies despite being about as serialized as TOH just not touting that as some sort of revolutionary aspect of it.

And the worst part? At least to me? It... It's a fanfiction writing problem. And in fanfiction, it's fine. Fanfiction is meant to use a piece of media to explore every potential part of the world and characters it wants. A professional piece of media, that takes so much money and effort to create, is meant to have greater focus and coherence so as to actually have a point to its story.

And if you want a comparable example for professional work, look no further than 50 Shades of Grey. I'm not saying TOH is as bad as 50 Shades but they both suffer from whenever the writer loses interest in an idea and just writes it out or has it vanish for no reason. Both go on tangents when the writer has some new idea that comes into their brain.

It reminds me of when people would ask while I was writing Crises Girlfriends, "What are Gus and Willow doing in this AU?" Because I am more of an original writer than I am a fanfic writer, and Crises Girlfriends was a story that I always planned to convert to original fiction, I'd never even considered them. Not for even a second.

Because... Could I have given them a role? Yes. But like TOH, it would have been performative, dilute the point and focus of the story and just felt like a waste of word count. So I didn't include them because they had no point.

But it was also fanfiction and Willow and Gus probably mean a lot to the people who asked. That's not their fault. That's part of fanfiction. I didn't get mad or anything, I just described what I just did as to why they wouldn't show up.

Because I knew what Crises Girlfriends was. I can make a one sentence pitch for it. It's about two girls who find love through the person they are with, but find help through the place they're in. It gets across how the two give support and care for each other but that love isn't the answer to mental health so within the story, you can actually expect some treatment of their mental health issues.

For Amphibia, you can say "It's the story of how another world helps bring light to the flawed friendship of three girls and makes them better people" and that works for explaining the main thrust of Amphibia.

What the hell is the main thrust of TOH? I can say what its main theme is, that self expression is king, but that's even an awkward placement when it clearly wants to be about reality versus fiction. But then it also is way too much wish fulfilment. It wants to be subversive of the fantasy genre but it uses too many of the tropes and excuses of it.

It doesn't know what it isn't, which doesn't let it know what it is. And that's such a shame. =======
