Golden Boy

Luca’s Perspective:

Stood outside the stadium in the blazing Marseille sun, Luca Rossi mindlessly scrolled through his phone. At 23, the Italian footballer was the golden boy of l’OM. He had worked since he was a little kid to get to where he was today. Constant practices, weightlifting sessions, and specialty diets, all designed to keep him in peak athletic shape.

All that work finally paid off four years ago when he got his lucky break at OM. Since then, he rose quickly to stardom and became a household name across all of Europe.

Although the stardom was great, it came a few obligations that Luca wasn't particularly fond of. Recently, an auction offering a fan the chance to spend an afternoon with him had successfully raised 5 million euros for charity. While he wasn't sure about the idea of spending an entire day with a fan, Luca at least appreciated the fact that the proceeds were going to a meaningful cause.

“Salut Luca!” Marc's enthusiastic voice called, prompting Luca to look up.

“Hey … Marc is it? How are you?” Luca replied, still not fluent in French.

“Yup! So cool to meet you Luca, I can't believe I won,” Marc beamed.

Luca smiled back, “The pleasure's all mine. Ready for a tour of the stadium?"

The two strolled inside where Luca showed Marc the warm up facilities and the locker rooms. Marc, in awe, said, "Woauh, its so cool to see all this. I've been following l'OM since I was a little kid, but I've never actually gotten a chance to be back here before."

Exiting the locker rooms, they stepped onto the pitch. A cluster of soccer balls stood in a neat cluster. Marc walked over and tapped a ball with the outside of his foot into the middle of the pitch. Without missing a beat, he swiftly stepped to the ball and smashed it into the back of the net, much to Luca's surprise.

Marc turned back to Luca, "Oh yeah, I play with my mates for fun all the time," he said. "We're definitely not as good as you though, haha."

Eventually, Marc and Luca finished their tour of stadium and then ventured out into the city for the rest of the afternoon. Luca, ever cautious about his celebrity status, threw on sunglasses and a cap to make sure he went unnoticed. Before long, the pair found themselves at a charming little café tucked away from the bustling streets of Marseille.

At the counter, Marc ordered a pastry and a latte before turning to Luca, "What about you, Luca? What are you in the mood for?" Luca lingered over the delectable pastries behind the glass case. "Anything catching your eye?" Marc prodded gently.

Luca shook his head with a faint smile, "No, I have a strict diet for most of the season," he said. "And even in the off-season, I don't really get to eat like that. I’ll just take an espresso."

Marc, sat down, sipping his latte. "There must be some perks to that, though. I mean, you're in great shape," he said, gesturing towards Luca.

Luca chuckled, "Oh, for sure. It's just that sometimes I wonder what it would be like to not have to worry about training, eat what I want, just hang out with friends."

"Oh, well, surely you get to hang out with friends, right?" March chirped

Luca's gaze shifted, "Well, yeah, but most of my friends are on the team. We never really get all that crazy, and we're always on the road. I feel like I've missed out on the normal experiences for guys our age."

A brief pause hung in the air before Marc, with a hint of hesitation, said, "Well, maybe I have a solution for you. Just promise not to laugh.”

Luca looked at him confused. “What if I told you we could swap lives for a bit?" Marc said.

Luca, eyebrows raised, chuckled incredulously, "Well I'd say you're crazy, Marc."

"Actually, I have a family recipe that we've passed down.” Marc explained “It lets people swap lives for a few months. I'd be happy to swap with you, Luca. It could be cool to play in the big leagues for a bit."

Luca, still skeptical, arched an eyebrow. "Swap lives? Come on, Marc, this isn't some movie plot."

But Marc persisted, and as they left the café and continued their stroll through the winding streets, Marc explained that his family had used the ritual for generations. Apparently it was meant to help the men is his family get to understand one another a bit better.

As the day unfolded, Luca found himself warming up to the crazy idea. Eventually, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Luca and Marc ambled back to Marc's apartment.

"Okay, Luca, the offer still stands." Marc said as he stood by the doorframe. "Its up to you if you want to swap."

Luca, yearning for a taste of ordinary life, agreed with a hesitant nod. The two made their way upstairs to Marc's studio apartment. It wasn't anything fancy, but he had a spectacular view right out onto the marina.

As Luca looked out the window, Marc stirred some herbs into a small glass of tonic. Handing the glass to Luca he explained, "This concoction has the right combination of herbs to facilitate the swap."

"The swap is temporary. You'll automatically switch back in two months … unless we break the conditions of the ritual," he said.

“And how would we do that” Luca said, looking at him inquisitively.

Marc replied, “Not a chance that this will happen, but if either of us orgasms while having sex with the other one, the ritual will seal us in our new bodies forever.”

Let me check out your immediate area…. There is a gym around the corner. Well… Something like that. The building is more like a stable or a barrack. The weights and equipment are homemade. But there's a TV that plays music videos…. Maybe someone here understands English…

The men who work out here are quite well defined. But they don't have much mass. Overall, you've never really noticed big bodybuilders from China at competitions. Hold on. You have never been to competitions. Or have you? Sure, you are an enthusiastic weightlifter yourself. Not a serious one. But you like to watch the big lads on stage. The men here in the gym look at you a bit questioningly. You show your gym bag. And look equally questioning. One man points to some hooks on the wall where clothes are hanging. There doesn't seem to be a locker room. Even though you have no idea where this bag with the training clothes and the prepared protein shake came from, you change and start training. None of the other men seems to find this strange… Every now and then someone looks over at you. Yes, you lift more than anyone else here. After you finish your set of bench presses, someone asks you if you can give them some tips. You do a set of lat pulls together and you correct his wrong moves. Only afterwards do you realize that you were talking in Cantonese. Yes, it's still difficult for you. But you've been living here for a few years now and it's getting better and better.

After you are done with the training, most people here want to have a selfie with you. You are truly an exceptional athlete, a role model for many of the men here. The music videos are interrupted by commercials. Fuck, that's you advertising for the biggest gym chain in the country. Sure, it's owned by your manager and you're involved.

It's good to work out in your old home in the deepest province. You are now at home in Chongqing. But your heart beats stronger here. You quickly fall back into the local dialect when you're here. And this is exactly where you will open the next gym of your fitness center group.

The video was posted to Corroded Coffin’s official TikTok and took their little corner of the internet by storm.

It started out with a shot of Tig and Grant standing a fair distance away and gesticulating with each other in a way that made it obvious they were discussing weightlifting. Then the camera panned over rapidly to Gareth and Eddie as they sat on the curb behind the tour bus. Eddie was busy looking at his phone as he took a picture of a bug that was on the road between his feet, and Gareth was staring in the direction of the other two band members.

The expression on his face was pinched, his brow furrowed and his cheeks a soft pink, the corners of his mouth down-turned. The person holding the camera was revealed to be Jeff when there’s a choked off laugh from behind the camera. Eddie looked up at the camera with a puzzled expression, then over at Gareth and beyond to what he was frowning at. The smirk that split his face as Eddie rolled his eyes back at the camera had Jeff letting out a soft giggle.

Then Gareth’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open, the blush on his cheeks deepening, and the camera panned back over to Tig and Grant. Tig was now shirtless and doing some sort of flex to show off the tattooed expanse of his back. Jeff quickly spun the camera back on Gareth and slowly zoomed in, catching the way his eyes glazed over, his mouth hanging open.

Gareth only snapped out of it when a shiny drop of drool began to spill over his bottom lip. Sucking back his spit and wiping his face, he glared at Eddie who actually fell back on the sidewalk, howling with laughter. It was only then that Gareth actually looked up and saw the camera on him, and his blush spread rapidly down his throat.

“Put your fuckin’ shirt back on, Slenderman!” Gareth shouted. “Literally no one wants to see that shit!”

“I think over 12,000 people on Twitter would disagree with you there,” Tig called back and somehow Gareth’s blush deepened even more.

The camera flipped to the front-facing camera, and Jeff and Chrissy’s tired faces filled the view as Gareth started shouting about Twitter and bots.

“There is no way that much stupid can fit inside one person,” Jeff said, exhaustion clear in his voice.

“Especially someone so small,” Chrissy agreed, and the video cut off on her giggle at Gareth’s indignant shout.

Ok regardless of the gross money grabbing schemes, I miss tumblr and having a platform so I'm back lol.

I decided this morning that I need to get up and get moving. It's been a good 6 months since I decided to take a break from weightlifting and I've been waiting for motivation to strike me which never happened.

So I'm signing up to a local gym (halleluiah, I think the hour drive to the gym each day was a massive barrier) so I can go before work. I won't be doing the usual three hour workouts I'm used to - what do you mean you can work out in an hour!? I'm excited for that.

I'm hoping there will be as platform and some bumper plates but all good if not - I've wanted to have a go at powerlifting for a long time now so now might be good time for it.

I'm also going to add in some cardio. I haven't done cardio since I started lifting 8 years ago. I'm mostly doing this becauser I'm going on a trip to Europe in August and there are lots of walking tours and I don't want to lag behind because I'm unfit.

Anyway, I don't know what or how often I'll be posting but I'm looking for some accountability so I can imagine it will be frequent lol.

45. How do you feel about the fact that you've recently started contributing to songwriting as well?

CC: I thought I would never do it because I was never good with my words. The members, however, inspired me enough that the words came by themselves.

46. So far, you are the only one from Stray Kids to have released your solo album, a digital one. Do you feel better as a soloist or a member of a group?

CC: Ah no no, I've never been a soloist, I've never debuted solo! I keep emphasizing that it's the "CHICHI OF STRAY KIDS" ' album because I want it to be clear. I don't like being alone so soloist's life is not for me.

47. Do members consult you for Japanese language advice?

CC: Yes, although they are already quite good at it themselves! Mostly I work with 3RACHA when it comes to Japanese songs, I help translate or write them.

48. What's the song you can't stop listening to lately?

CC: "Antifragile" by LE SSERAFIM! I think I've been listening to this song at least once a day since its release, hahaha.

49. Do you feel that you are the oldest member of Stray Kids?

CC: Absolutely not. Everyone seems to forget about it too and bully Bang Chan about it (I'm sorry Bang Chan!).

50. One message to yourself from the past?

CC: It's hard and it's going to be even harder. But remember that it will also be worth it!

I do believe however that Marilyn Manson grew some tiddies while losing weight. What kind of tiddies are those - from weightlifting or from silicone - I cannot tell. I hope (but I doubt) that he will do some tanktops during his Summer tour, so that I can catch a better glimps at his new balcony...

Batfam Performers AU

No Capes AU where all the members of the batclan come together through a shared love of dance

The Wayne family has been a big supporter of the arts for generations (i mean cmon martha and thomas literally got killed leaving the theater, thats low hanging fruit) and of course Bruce continues this tradition by being very actively involved in the arts communities in Gotham, especially dance which is his favorite

Bruce and Dick meeting is pretty much exactly the same as cannon except instead of becoming a crime fighting duo, Dick gets therapy and decides to continue in gymnastics in remembrance of his parents

Dick goes to the Summer Olympics no less than 3 separate times, and while there, he finds a fantastic group of friends in a variety of other events like Running (Wally, who specializes in the 100 m), Archery (Roy obvi), Weightlifting (Kori), Boxing (Donna), Modern Pentathlon (Garfield), Skateboarding (Raven), and Table Tennis (Victor).

After retiring from international competitions, Dick does several tours with the Cirque du Soleil.

Jason is a street performer, breakdancing for spare change and also pickpocketing passersby and Bruce goes Hey, That’s Free Kid. Back when he was homeless, Jason spent a lot of time at the local community center learning hip-hop and keeps up with it even after moving to Bristol. It’s more of a casual hobby, but he’s gotten several offers to tour professionally.

At one Winter Olympics competition (which the waynes always attend in person), Dick stumbles upon one of the chinese figure skaters.

Enter: Cassandra Cain, rising figure skating star, literally won every competition ever, master on the ice, etc etc. Except... somethings off. Because it turns out there’s a huge scandal with abuse of the underage figure skaters going on (think of that controversy with the russian figure skaters who were basically being starved and abused to delay puberty so they wouldn’t develop curves bc that would impact their ability to do quadruple jumps). So Bruce goes, Oh, You’re Being Abused? That’s Free Kid and adopts her. After being adopted, Cass continues to compete in figure skating, but at a much less intense level, and also explores other forms of dance. She falls in love with ballet and quickly rises to the top. That’s where she meets Tim!

Tim fell in love with dance the second his parents forced him to learn the waltz for galas. They enrolled him in ballet (bc “that’s one of the only respectable styles of dance”) basically just to shut him up. Secretly, Tim has been obsessed with more contemporary styles of dance ever since he saw a certain circus performance (wink wink nudge nudge) and constantly goes to watch underground dance competitions. Cass, who knows him from the ballet studio, spots him at one such competition and drags him forcefully into the family. Much to his parents chagrin, Tim ends up forming a small dance troupe with Conner, Bart, and Cassie (Young Just Us). They travel to competitions all over the country, winning hearts and inspiring sexuality crises.

Duke, instead of working as a performer, works in lighting design! He learned the craft from his parents and knows how to work a lighting board like no other. He does work for basically every show/competition in Gotham, including plays and musicals. He knows everyone. Or, more accurately, everyone knows him. Duke is everywhere. If you’re a performer in Gotham, Duke has pointed a spotlight at you.

Damian is classically trained, basically since birth, and won’t let anyone forget it. He considers anything that isn’t classical to be inferior and takes great pride in his ability to dance en point. His dirty little secret? Damian loves square dancing. Jon made him do it once and he complained about it the whole time, then never stopped thinking about it. He would rather die than let anyone find out.

Stephanie starts out as a street performer as well. Unfortunately, she doesn’t get adopted by a billionaire (yet) and after turning 18 works as a stripper in one of Gotham’s less reputable clubs. She falls in love with pole dancing and starts doing it competitively. She catches a lot of shit for it, which is stupid because pole dancing is an incredibly difficult and incredibly beautiful artform. All her awards earn her a spot as a dancer at a club in Gotham that actually treats their performers well. She meets Tim when he sneaks out to one of the pole dancing competitions and gets in a fistfight with an asshole who kept harassing Steph about giving him a lap dance. Steph also does roller derby. This isn’t relevant, but I like it.

Barbara was an incredibly gifted gymnast who trained alongside Dick before suffering a spinal injury during a nasty training accident. She goes on to study music composition and writes/sound mixes for basically everyone who’s anyone. Everyone wants Babs to compose a piece for them because she’s just the best. She’s sought out by teams ranging from break-dancing to cheerleading to experimental.

Bruce has just about every piece of equipment purchasable installed in his basement, so all of his beloved family members can pursue their dreams <]:*)

Recently I've been thinking about bands. Specifically the idea of having multiple different people, each on their respective instruments, contributing to the art of creating music.

I was thinking about this as I was listening to Car Seat Headrest, and also watching some of their live performances from last year's tour. Because it's relevant to the post, a little bit of backstory: Car Seat Headrest was started by Will Toledo in 2010, and for the first 5 years and 11 albums released, the music was almost entirely written and recorded by Will. In 2015 the band was joined by drummer Andrew Katz, guitarist Ethan Ives, and in 2016 Bassist Seth Dalby. The next 3 albums released consisted of material that had already been written by Will prior to 2015, but was recorded by the newly formed band.*

Listening to the more recent era of Car Seat Headrest music, both the albums and live performances, I'm really struck by just how much having a band has contributed to the sound. Their 2020 album Making a Door Less Open was the first entirely composed and recorded as a band, and while I really love Will's early work as a testament to creativity while confined to just writing/recording by yourself with limited equipment, every time I listen to MaDLO I'm blown away by how much each band members' skillset elevates the music. Ethan's shredding guitars on Weightlifters, Deadlines (Hostile), and Martin, Seth's smooth and measured bass on Can't Cool Me Down, Andrew's expertise in both electronic and real drums throughout the album... it all adds up to a really cohesive, really solid sound. I'm sure that if Will was still making music by himself it would sound wonderful, he's a very talented musician and songwriter, but having the full band just adds so much the sound.

I think this is even more apparent in their live performances, having 5 people each focusing on their parts, their instrumental specialties, really adds up to creating a beautiful, polished sound. The album version of Hymn - Remix is decent, but the live version is transcendant, with upbeat, driving drums, Ethan fucking KILLING the guitar solo, touring member Ben Roth's organ bringing a both jazzy and religious vibe to the song, and Will adding an amazing dramatic flair to the song as he falls to his knees, singing "If I give this up, will I be saved?"

The band elevating the art is especially true when they play Will's older songs. Last year's Masquerade Tour opened the set with Crows, a song originally released in 2013 on Nervous Young Man, and I'm sure some of the improved sound can be attributed to 9 extra years of musical experience, but when I listen closely I can hear each members' musical style shining through, and giving the track a whole new vibe. The chorus is given a new energy, but the verses are haunting with Ben's tinkling synths, Seth's steady bass, and Ethan's falsetto harmony. (I love Ethan's backing vocals, but my sister hates them for some reason. Meghan if you're reading this, you're wrong.)

I don't think these observations are anything new - there's a reason that a lot of great artists either were bands, or had permanent members in their backing bands for solo artists. No one person can be amazing at everything, especially in an artform like music when there are so many different skills needed to create a good song, and so having other talented artists to contribute to the creative process can bolster the quality greatly. Hell, even just having other artists to consult on a project is really valuable, even if they aren't directly contributing to the final creation.

As an artist, and as a person with a lot of social anxiety, these observations are very important. I've played in groups before, but never on a project I was creating. I have a very hard time willing myself to reach out to people, to ask for input or help in creating part of my music. I have a desire to collaborate, but this has been a barrier to me, because unless somebody asks me first, I don't seek it out. I really like the idea of collaboration with people I artistically vibe with, and I understand how much value it can add to art, but my social anxiety often holds me back. I think I'm getting better with time. I've actually been making some artist friends that I talk to regularly in the last couple months, I feel more motivated to share my ideas and discuss artistic concepts with them. I'm still writing and recording my music entirely by myself, but I'm at least slowly beginning to let other people into my creative process, and let my guard down a little bit.

Will Toledo recorded his early music on his laptop, in his car, by himself, not as a creative choice, but as a necessity due to his position as a socially isolated teenager. It also created a very interesting and unique and beloved sound. Both of these things can be true at the same time. I can create art that is my own, constrained by my social and physical limitations, beautiful because of those limitations, while also not being tethered by those limitations, recognizing that my art can be so much more when I start to let other people in.
