Yuki, Kakeru, and the boyhoods they never had
So, I was talking with my partner the other day about how Kakeru and Yuki are always touching each other (one of many reasons they're the most popular non-canonical furuba pairing on Ao3). Anyway, it got me thinking-- if we don't read all this physical contact as necessarily romantic, what are some other possible explanations? An examination:
When Yuki first meets Kakeru, he immediately gets up in his face talking about his favorite Super Sentai character, then walks him out of the student council office with an arm around his neck, despite Yuki's obvious discomfort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Kakeru puts a hand on his shoulder soon after, he teases Yuki about his feminine features. Yuki bats his hand away and decides he already hates Kakeru.
In Kakeru's next appearance, he puts a hand on Yuki's shoulder, removing it when Yuki gives him a death glare.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Kakeru stays behind that day to needle Yuki about Tohru, Yuki is the one to initiate touch this time. This leads to the two of them sharing a moment of vulnerability and the true beginning of their friendship. Kakeru putting his thumbs up on Yuki's shoulder is also a change to the way he's touched Yuki before - it's perhaps a bit more comfortable for Yuki, who's reacted negatively to all touch from Kakeru before this. Kakeru's communicating in his own way that he'll try and consider Yuki's needs from now on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we have the Kyoto trip, in which Yuki is still not fully comfortable with Kakeru (shown by his embarrassment when he tells Kakeru they wouldn't be friends anymore), but is starting to consider him a friend and spend time with him intentionally. We also have some sweet moments like this exchange between Haru and Kakeru, which Kakeru takes very seriously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this, Yuki finally learns (some of) Kakeru's backstory when he goes to help Kakeru clean up after Machi destroyed the student council office again. Yuki gets context for why Kakeru is the way that he is, learns about the successorship conflict, and then tries out some Kakeru chaos for himself. We also see Yuki initiate touch for the third time. I think this episode is where the real shift in their relationship happened. Yuki sees that there's a wisdom to Kakeru that he wasn't seeing without that context of Kakeru's oppressive childhood-- something to which Yuki can relate all too well. In a way, Kakeru's impulsiveness and sense of fun is his own way of either reclaiming or living out the childhood he didn't get to have, along with other traits like his love of Super Sentai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, a brief aside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see pretty clearly that the other three cursed Sohma boys around Yuki's age are all pretty comfortable interacting with each other physically. Kyo will roughhouse with Haru and give Momiji noogies, Momiji will hug or lean on both Kyo and Haru. These sorts of interactions began when they were young boys, and are pretty typical of boys through adolescence. Yuki, being shut in a room with Akito or alone, didn't get to have that experience of boyhood. All his physical interactions with Kyo are negative, and his physical interactions with Momiji are neutral-ish (Momiji jumps on him at the culture festival, Yuki dabs his tears in Kisa's first episode, and Yuki scolds Momiji a handful of times). (Aside within the aside: while Haru sometimes reciprocates the affection from Momiji or rough play from Kyo, he clearly has a special way of physically interacting with Yuki in the T-shape and shirt pinch, or the stroking of his chin, etc..., and he initiates touch with Yuki much more often than with the other two, likely because he noticed that as one more thing Yuki was missing out on and wanted to include him in a way that would be comfortable for him.)
So when Kakeru tells Yuki about his childhood, and Yuki gets stuck in the storage room later that episode and has a flashback to his own terrible childhood, he's already primed to open up to Kakeru about his own childhood and to start looking at the world more like Kakeru does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, after that day, their friendship becomes much more physical. Yuki no longer bats away Kakeru's hand and even initiates touch more often. They roughhouse and Kakeru often puts his arm around Yuki in a gesture of affection. To me, it's a way of reclaiming those experiences they didn't get to have in their childhood-- especially the type of friendships neither of them got to form when they were younger.

Kyo Sohma X Reader: Protective [fruits basket]
Tumblr media
You love your school friends, but one has always been a little more protective than the others.
Even though I’ve been at school since the beginning of the academic year, I’m still not adjusted well with the students. Some students still treat me with disrespect and no remorse. I’m happy to at least have supportive friends like Tohru, her friends, and the Sohma’s; especially Kyo.
For whatever reason, he’s been very protective of me as of late — as weird as it is to put it that way. Truth be told, it does get on my nerves sometimes. His support is appreciated and all, but I can also take care of myself. Though none of this is to say I want him to change. I wouldn’t change my friends at all.
It’s currently the morning of the school day. I’m putting away my shoes in my locker when Kyo, Tohru, and Yuki walk up to meet me. Yuki gives me a wave, partnered  with a "Good Morning" and Tohru says a quick hello in passing. The two of them head to class, though Kyo hangs behind with me.
"So, Kyo, How's your morning been so far?" I ask him. He scratches the back of his head.
"Annoying. Yucky Yuki's already ticked me off," he says.
"Oh, is that a new record? I’m sure he’s done worse sooner," I say sarcastically.
"Haha," he feigns an unenthusiastic laugh. "What about you? No one's tried to mess with you yet, have they?"
"Kyo, I can handle myself. Besides, no one gets violent. Just a couple of crude words,"
"I want to make sure you're safe,"
"I know, Kyo. Thanks,"I say, resting my hand against his shoulder. "C'mon. Let's get to class,”
The two of us start our trek to class. I noticed Kyo trying to hold my things for me, and while I appreciate the gesture, I tell him I can take care of things myself. We arrive at the room well before homeroom starts and claim seats with Tohru, Uo, Hana, and Yuki. Of course when the teacher actually gets here we’ll have to move to our assigned seats for the whole day, but for now some light chit-chat should be fine.
“Hey, you guys. Where's Yuki?” I ask, noticing his absence.
“He had some prince business to attend to. He’ll show up later,” Uo explains.
“I hope he’s doing alright,” Tohru says.
“Me too. He didn’t seem to want the student council position to begin with, much less to be the president. I hope he knows if he’s struggling he can come to us. That goes for all of you, as well,” I say.
“He’ll be fine. He was practically born for the role,” Kyo says, rolling his eyes. This, of course, earns him a quick jab to the ribs, courtesy of myself. Our chatting continues as the class waits for things to begin. For some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to drink a huge can of an unhealthy, sugar-filled beverage first thing in the morning, and I start to regret it as I feel a strong need to pee.
“So close to class? Excuse me guys, I’m going to use the restroom quickly,”
*
Yuki walks into the room just as class is about to begin, but sees you are nowhere in sight.
“Good morning everyone. Where’s Y/n? Didn’t she come to class?” Yuki asks before finding his seat.
“Now that you say that, it has been a while since she went to use the bathroom,” Hana notes. “Do you think she’s alright?”
“Orange top! Go check on Y/n!” Uo demands.
“Hah?? Don’t you tell me what to do!”
“It’s okay, I’ll do it,” Tohru suggests, but Kyo rises from his seat before she can.
“Sit down. I was going to check on her anyway,” Kyo says. As he goes to leave the room, the teacher stops him.
“Haven’t we been over this? Quit trying to skip my class,”
“I’m not trying to skip nothin’! I’m going to check on Y/n. She went to the bathroom a while ago and she’s not back yet. I’m doing your job here,”
“Just go. Don’t cause trouble,” the teacher excuses him and Kyo heads off.
*
The bell rings and I know I’m late for class. But it’s not completely my fault. Two students, a boy and a girl, had stopped me on my way back from the restroom. I don’t know their names, but they’ve stopped me before. They’re not really my biggest fans. I stand there against the wall as they ask and say to me things no one should ask or say, cruel words I would rather abstain from repeating. But it doesn’t really affect me. I stand there with no reaction as they berate me. Turn the other cheek, you know?
“Hey!” The interjecting voice is immediately recognizable to me. Kyo. His eyes are narrow as he walks up to the two students and I. “How about you shut your mouths? The both of you,” Kyo offers.
“Kyo, it’s alright, I got it,”
“No, I think these idiots need to learn who they’re talking to,”
“Kyo I said I got it alright? Getting aggressive isn’t going to change their perspective so let’s just head back,” you say. He grabs my hand, passing the two students a dirty look as he drags us away from the scene and back to class.
*
The bell rings, concluding the school day and letting the students out. To be truthful, I’ve been avoiding Kyo a bit. I’m not mad, just a bit annoyed. It’s great having such a considerate friend, no one has ever looked out for me the way he does, but when he steps in for me it looks like I can’t handle myself. I open my shoe locker, pulling out my things to leave. When I close the locker door, Kyo is leaning against the ones next to it, looking down at the floor.
“I’m sorry,” he says. I cross my arms and lean against the lockers myself.
“About what?”
“I know you don’t like it when I get really protective of you,”
“Yeah, what were you even doing out there?”
“You hadn’t come back yet and we were starting to get worried. I was starting to get worried,”
“You’re a good friend for staying by me, and I appreciate what you do for me, wanting me safe and happy, but I can fight my own battles. You can stick up for me, but you don’t need to act responsible for me,”
“I know. I’m trying to not get annoyed by them, it’s just…” Kyo trails off, debating his next words, “I don't like when people make fun of the person I like"
“What?”
“Gosh, ya need me to spell it out for ya?” I stare at him for a moment before realizing.
"You… like me? More than a friend?”
"Well duh. Why wouldn’t I?” I shrug.
“I don’t know. It’s not like you flirt with me. I don’t remember you telling me or asking me out,”
“You seriously never noticed?”
“Didn’t have a clue,”
“Well, then you must be really dumb because I made it really obvious,”
“Hey!” I say, nudging his arm. “I guess like you too… dumb dumb,”
Kyo smiles. He stands up straight, extending his hand to me. “Want me to walk you home?”
“Sure,” I say after rolling my eyes. I take his hand and we walk off the premises together. I guess I should pay more attention to things.

Which character outside the SOS Brigade would you like to know more about?
Man, this was such an easy answer before Intuition. Of course, that easy answer would be Tsuruya, but we've received quite a bit of insight into what her life looks like at this point; so it doesn't make sense to say Tsuruya again; and Tsuruya's Challenge also gave us some insight into T as well.
Honestly, though, setting that line of thought aside completely? There is another easy answer, at least for me.
Emiri Kimidori.
We see that Yuki and Asakura both seem to have gained more autonomy and free will/personal desires than they're seemingly supposed to have. But Kimidori is always kind of in the vicinity, and she's literally never been the focus of anything more than a passing scene.
I want to know more about her. I want to see her daily life and know if she has the same unexpected individuality the other two have developed (presumably via proximity to Haruhi and possibly Kyon).
The fact that she works at that café and asks Kyon not talk about it, because she's not supposed to when she's on the student council, stands out to me.
Like. Does she work because she needs to? Does she work because she wants to? Was she only there to serve the purpose her superiors intended?
What exactly is her intended purpose? What does she enjoy? Does she live in the same apartment complex as Yuki, like Asakura? In general, what's her situation? What does she do when she's not working, or doing her student council duties, or bringing problems to someone's attention?
There's a lot of interesting potential there, but we only ever get hints of it.

Rain tapped against the classroom windows, lulling Nene into a light sleep.
Just as she closed her heavy eyes, a soft voice called her awake once more,
“Yashiro-san?”
Humming in response, Nene raises her head from her crossed arms to look up at one of her classmates.
Blinking in surprise, it was the girl that sat in front of her, Tanaka Yuki. She was a part of the student council and intelligent.
“I…” Yuki trails off, tugging her soft black hair. Her brown eyes looked at Nene with concern, “I just wanted to see if you’re okay,”
Nene nods her head slowly.
Yuki nodded to herself, “Good. Good. As our class rep. — and a part of the student council, I have to make sure my peers are at optimal performance,” she paused, her smile tightened, “I suggest you… have a bit more effort in maintaining a healthy attitude while you are on school grounds, Yashiro-san.”
Nene’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, “huh?”
“Oh!” Yuki gasped dramatically, “I didn’t mean to offend you. I was just letting you know that this streak of showing up late, being so predecessor visibly injured, and, well–” she glanced to the side, tilting her head, “other behavioral indicators of being a delinquent is, quite frankly, ruining our reputation as not only a school but our class.”
Nene’s red droopy eyes stared at her, unblinking, “...You think I’m a delinquent?”
“No!” the dark-haired girl shook her head, “No, no. I don’t… but we have been receiving letters from concerned parents and students regarding our school’s atmosphere,”
Yuki smiled at her, “Just… wear the winter uniform from now on and smile, okay?”
Why not stop the people bullying? Nene thought, her eyes settling on the desk in front of her. After all, she has seen it. The entire student council sees it.
Nene nodded.
“Good to see you so cooperative!” She giggled, twirling her hair with a finger, “Well, that wraps up what I was required to discuss with you….”
Nene nods again. She couldn’t help but think that Yuki would keep talking. Maybe it was her way of being kind, not letting anyone come to harass her, even if it was only for a few minutes,
“I actually had a bit of a personal question, if you don’t mind,”
Personal? Nene knew she couldn’t afford to let anyone get close, she started to shake her head, but Yuki paid no mind to her refusal,
“Why did you start growing your hair out?”
Nene inhaled sharply, furrowing her eyebrows,
“Um… It’s not like a big deal or anything. It’s just… you had short hair a couple of years ago and suddenly started growing it. I was just curious!”
Nene hummed, tugging on a strand of her hair, “I grew my hair out… because… Someone I was friends with said that I should,”
Ao-chan said boys liked long hair… Hanako-kun liked my hair.
Yuki giggles at that, “Friend? You don’t have any, though,”
“Um…” Nene looked out the window briefly before staring at her desk once more, “I—”
“Oh my goodness!” She laughed, “I totally didn’t mean to say that. I was so just joking with you!”
Yuki… almost seemed embarrassed,
“Tanaka, Yashiro, Shouldn’t you be going to your clubs?” A male voice called out to them,
Nene quickly looked at the doorway, finding Tsuchigomori standing there, a binder in his hand,
“Apologizes, Tsuchigomori-sensei!” Yuki bowed, giggling at Nene, “I hope we don’t need to discuss this again, Yashiro-san~!”
Nene watched her bounce to the door, slipping by her teacher.
Tsuchigomori walked into the room, “...You know you should join a club, Yashiro,”
Sighing, Nene stared at her desk once more, “I don’t want to,”
-unfinished.

Choose violence - Fruits Basket. 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23.
Tohru herself gets "Canon Sue" accusations levied at her quite a bit, which....no, guys. Just no. Also, Mitoko Minagawa seems misunderstood and underappreciated by too many. 3. How does one miss the point so badly as this:
Tumblr media
7. None whatsoever. 8. Not too common, but there are definitely some who think that non-Sohma characters like Uotani and Hanajima, the Prince Yuki Fanclub, and the Student Council don't matter too much to the series and are ultimately "throwaway" characters. And that's just so wrong. 9. In general? The forced heteronormativity. But specifically? The handling of Katsuya Honda and his relationship with Kyoko. While the Arisa/Kureno romance subplot is a very close second, but with only a few minor tweaks it could've worked as something to keep in there. The Katsuya/Kyoko stuff was broken upon arrival if Takeya was insistent on making Katsuya older and Kyoko's teacher but treating his grooming of her as anything other than disgusting. 10. See what I said for 8 on the ignoring of non-Sohma characters. There's so much that could be done with the high school cast! 12. The Prince Yuki Fanclub, Minagawa in particular. There are good reasons to like and appreciate them beyond just the comic relief.
16. Anyone who actually likes Arisa/Kureno or Katsuya/Kyoko as romantic pairs are beyond my understanding. 17. More Kimi/Machi and Kimi/Minagawa content! 18. The sister-like dynamic between Kagura and Isuzu, which could also use more exploration in fanworks than it was given in canon! 19. Shigure and Ren Sohma. NOT as a pair, heavens no, but as characters in the story. Shigure is a wonderfully well done and nuanced portrayal of a sociopath, and I think Ren deserves more pity than the fandom or even canon was willing to give her; she could've been a helpful and admirable person were she sound of mind, but she's just...never been sound of mind, and it's wore away at her soul to the point where, like her daughter, she's her own worst enemy. 20. Again, the Arisa/Kureno stuff, and I also was not too big on the Hatori/Mayu romance either, as while I understand why it was there and what its purpose was, it felt almost like a "pity love story" on Takeya's end given what happened in Hatori's last relationship. 21. Everything to do with Kyoko Honda and how she factored into the entire Tohru/Kyo/Yuki story. Do we really need to pretend it wasn't contrived as all fuck? 22. Don't really have an answer for this one. 23. Kagura/Momiji. I now legit wonder why it wasn't a canonical thing!

let's stay together! (2)
time for part two!! today we're starting the zodiac :)
yuki sohma is by far one of my favorite characters in this series. not because of what was, but what could have been.
yuki grew up an excluded child, not only because of his illness but because of his mother giving most control to akito once he hit a certain age. the constant verbal and physical abuse from akito where she would lock him in a dark room for days on end forced yuki into a quiet shell. this is what gave yuki his “soft” demeanor that he uses with his prince front.
although heading up the zodiac, yuki does not actually fit into the characteristics of the rat. people born under the rat are ambitious, charming, talkative, and serious to name a few traits. yuki CAN fit these when he puts up his prince front. for a large chunk of his life yuki avoided friends and contact, and would only interact with people IF THEY INTERACTED WITH HIM FIRST. this is a huge thing to note his front and “kindness” were fake. (this is mainly going off of how yuki perceives himself, i don't think that yuki's kindness is fake.)
things genuinely take a turn for the better in his life once tohru enters. for a while, his front is still there, which i partially think was done because yuki was unsure how to establish himself as either a friend or love interest. i think a major part of this is yuki wanting to present himself as a man and act upon the fact that tohru is a pretty girl his age and it "only makes sense" for him to be attracted to her/want a relationship with her. (of course, tohru is the first woman in his life to genuinely care for him so obviously, it turned into motherly love.) but it really isn't until we have great scenes like him laughing at the hot spring after tohru misses the ball in ping pong that we finally see the REAL yuki.
we see this even further when we hit season two and FINALLY, GET THE STUDENT COUNCIL (YAYAYAY) !! this group of unique and comedic characters brings out a whole new exasperation in yuki. it's so refreshing to see genuine reactions from him because he is trying to have actual relationships with people now. emphasis on the fact that he is trying. with his past, it makes sense for him to be such an introverted person. he doesn't feel that he is deserving of relationships when akito made him feel so frail and worthless, taking advantage of him in his weakest state as a child.
this is also what is so beautiful with his relationship with machi. as the prince of the school, yuki is used to constantly hearing how he "deserves the world" or "is so perfect" ect ect... which is something he did lack hearing at home. in contrast, machi never said anything like that about him. she basically called him bland, which for some reason, he appreciated more. yuki is such an interesting character in that way where you would think he would need some extra praise because of his childhood, yet maybe you would argue he wouldn't want to hear it at all because of the fan club at school. my two cents is that yuki just wants to be treated normally!! growing up it was the constant abuse from akito that he "needed her to survive", at school, it's constant attention and adoration; with kyo, it's being the perfect rat. yuki just wanted to be normal. machi treated him normally, even slightly less, which made him fall in love with her. (they're both such messes, i love them.)
now here's "the what could have been:" yuki is arguably one of the most queer-baited characters in anime. as much as i love his relationship with machi, the chemistry was always with kakeru and other male characters. it would have added so much to his development especially after he went from a “potential love interest” for tohru to after he understood his true love for her was more of motherly love. i could argue that yuki lacked SO much potential as a character because he ended up straight. if he ended up with a male character i think it would have made soo much more sense after watching him grow with tohru. (LIKE THINK OF THE SCENE ON THE BEACH WHERE ITS JUST YUKI AND TOHRU LIKE CMON WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE HIM COME OUT TOO.) regardless, i do love yuki and his character was the first to catch my interest when i started watching the original fruits basket back in 6th grade.
i DO highly suggest all of you check out the president perfect animatic on youtube!! it's by emirichu with the song covered by Caleb Hyles. its a beautiful AU and depicts my thoughts on yuki quite perfectly. :)
in conclusion, yuki is really battling a lot. from trying to repair broken relationships with his brother (which i will discuss in ayame's post) to being envious of kyo, to where he stands romantically.
(i apologize now that this is a little all over the place, i just have a lot to say lol. the rest of this series will have talking points!)

Bookshelf Briefs 5/4/22
Minami Nanami Wants to Shine, Vol. 1 | By Bana Yoshida and Yuki Yaku | Yen Press – For most of the volume, this feels like a typical side-story spin-off from Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, focusing on perpetual second-best Minami, and her frustration with being the perpetual second-best. The plot involves her mother, who works at a modeling agency, suggesting that her daughter model for them. Minami is a bit taken aback by this, partly as I don’t think she really sees herself as pretty, but also because it’s not anything she had thought about before. The surprise comes when she chooses NOT to run against Aoi for student council—as in the books—and goes for the modeling instead. Will she succeed? Will she start to like herself? Can’t wait to find out. – Sean Gaffney
My Love Mix-Up! Vol. 3 | By Wataru Hinekure and Aruko | Viz Media – This series has settled into a groove of being a heartwarming romantic farce and I am here for it. Aoki and Hashimoto deal with a survival-style ski instructor on a school trip and manage to get a little closer to their respective crushes. Aoki in particular manages to experience the heights of romantic hope and crushing despair as he pursues the perpetually stoic yet still sympathetic Ida. The illustrations easily capture Aoki’s ugly crying, joy, and the time when he feels so depressed he metaphorically turns into a slime. Highly recommended for anyone enjoying romance hijinks. – Anna N
New Game!, Vol. 12 | By Shotaro Tokuno | Seven Seas – This is the penultimate volume, and you know what that means: it means we’re going out with some drama. The team finds out that their game has lost its funding and they need to either find a new company to bankroll them or give up entirely. The obvious answer is Catherine’s company, even if that means groveling a bit. But the carrot comes with a stick, and this means that, once AGAIN, Aoba will not be the lead character designer. As this is about the third time this has happened, I suspect the final volume is probably going to have her questioning her ongoing life choices—she’s a perpetual “not good enough” designer. With all this drama, will we ever find out if Kou and Rin are a canon couple? – Sean Gaffney
Skip Beat!, Vol. 46 | By Yoshiki Nakamura | Viz Media – Skip Beat! is still nowhere near finished, and so the fact that Ren has confessed to Kyoko does not mean that things are wrapping up in a neat bow. Kyoko is stressed about anyone loving her—still—and also has not told him that she is Bo—still. Fortunately, the author knows the other reason that we’re reading this, which is the acting, and the next volume promises to focus more on that. Unfortunately, there are still many parts of Ren’s past that have yet to come to light, and they also promise to show up in the next volume. With all this going on, can Kyoko still find time to go on a date to an amusement park with her real true love, Moko? This was shorter than most volumes, but still worth the wait. – Sean Gaffney
Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 18 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – It’s really a rare shoujo series that makes me wonder “OK, maybe they *are* going for a threesome ending?”, but Snow White with the Red Hair comes close. The romance between Zen and Shirayuki gets some more focus here, as they get to reunite in a big romantic scene. That said, Obi is not only intertwined damn near permanently with Shirayuki, but also with Zen, and it doesn’t help that the end of this volume has the author teasing about the two of them sleeping in the same bed. This series has a whole lot of Teasing Creator to it when it comes to the romance, and while I doubt Obi will be an official partner with Shirayuki—or indeed Zen—he’s still one of the best reasons to read this. – Sean Gaffney
Spy x Family, Vol. 7 | By Tatsuya Endo | Viz Media – I feel like a bit of a bad fan for saying this, but I will admit that I love Spy x Family better when it’s focusing on the antics of Loid and Yor than when it’s Anya’s Adventures at the Academy, and that’s what the majority of this volume is. That said, it does give some much-needed depth to Damian (and also a cover shot), as we see how much his insecurities stem from a desperate need to please and be noticed by his uncaring father. Elsewhere, Bond helps Loid to survive a mission, and we see that Yuri, while dedicated to stamping out subversives, is not without a heart. Most importantly, we kick off the next arc, at last focusing on Yor, who must protect rather than kill. Keep reading this great and extremely popular series. – Sean Gaffney
The Walking Cat: A Cat’s Eye View of the Apocalypse | By Tomo Kitaoka | Seven Seas – Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a virus ravages humanity, turning millions of people into zombies and leaving small, scrappy bands of survivors to fend for themselves. That’s the basic premise of The Walking Cat: A Cat’s Eye View of the Apocalypse, a middling horror story by newcomer Tomo Hideoka. The idea of experiencing a zombie plague from an animal’s perspective sounds promising, but in practice, Yuki feels more like a gimmick than a thoughtful exploration of how a human pandemic might effect other species. Yuki is barely a character; he functions mostly as a plot device, providing continuity between the series’ three main storylines and chasing the occasional butterfly. The humans aren’t very compelling either, as their stories are too rushed—and cliché—for the reader to feel much investment in their fate. Personally, I’m rooting for the zombies. – Katherine Dacey

thoughts on: Fruits Basket
Tumblr media
manganya! bukan animenya!
ok kembali ke tujuan utama dibentuknya laman ini: ulas jejepangan dan kekoreaan <3
Fruits Basket udah masuk reading list-ku dari tahun 2012-an. aku tau ini manga legendaris dan rasanya belom afdol kalau suka baca shojo tapi belom baca ini. di Google tertulis genrenya romantic comedy, tapi percaya w itu kecu kelas kakap. aksi kriminal. i did not know what i’m gonna get myself into when i started reading it.
SAYANG BGT GAK. IYA GW SUCKER FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
e tapi tapi tapi, aku perlu menyampaikan kalau ending-nya Fruits Basket nih ngga sesuai dengan apa yang aku mau ahaha. idealnya (untukku) kaya gini:
Yuki bahagia dan pergi keliling dunia untuk mengenal dirinya lebih jauh dan seize the opportunities yang dia gapernah dapet sebelumnya (thanks to Akito si freak). Tohru ngapain aja terserah tapi jangan terlibat dalam hubungan romantis ke siapapun PLIS (if u don’t know already i’m a big sucker for platonic love).
nah TL;DR-nya, ini komik tentang keluarga freak. i advise you not to read or watch it because you’re not missing anything anyways... but if you’ve already set your mind on reading it then do remember that what you see is not always what it seems. i wish you all the best of luck my friend.
ps: here’s a snippet of yunyun - kakeru interaction i love so much

their s/o not giving them any affection
pairings. hinata shoyo x reader, bokuto koutarou x reader, tendou soatori x reader
genre. fluff
a/n. im kinda busy with my reports and some quizzes in my major subjects, that’s why i can’t write that much lately hahaha sorryyy!
other: kenma, suna and iwaizumi version, semi, sugawara and terushima
Hinata Shoyo
Tumblr media
he’s really used to you being clingy to him. you like clinging onto his arms all the time and even when he’s sweaty after the match you’d wrap your arms around his neck.
and he get extra hyper because of that. that it makes some of his teammates annoyed.
one day the whole teammate ganged up on you to not give any affection for a week and in return they’ll buy the both of you a ticket to a buffet restaurant. so you agreed.
he was surprised when you dodge his hug. but later on whines at you on why won’t you let him hug you.
days had come, his teammates saw that whenever he whines about you dodging his touches, after that he’ll be okay so they need to step up the game.
to push hinata to his limits, his teammates decided to hug you one by one and not let hinata have a hug on you.
they hugged you one by one which surprised you but realized afterwards what they’re trying to do. and when it’s hinata’s turn you quickly went away from him
so you ran on the other side of the gym and surprisingly he ran to you to. so it end up him chasing you while whining. “y/n-chaaaaan! hug me too! you’re unfair! i’m your boyfriend! maybe you don’t want me anymore.”
that made you stop and all of his teammates were shock. while he storm out of the gym. they gave you an apologetic face and just gave them a faint smile.
you chased him and found him at the stairs to their club room.
“shoyo… im sorry.” he didn’t answer. he crossed his arms at his chest and looked away from you with a pouty face. “hmp!”
“i didn’t mean to make you feel that way, they just wanna tease you. i’m sorry again. i promise i won’t do this again.”
“really?” he looked at you in his pouty face. you nodded and come close to him.
you cupped his face and kissed his forehead, both cheeks, nose and chin. “yes, i promise you that.”
to hide his blushing face he pulled your hips forward so he could bury his onto your belly. ypu giggled when you saw how red his ears are. “im sorry again for agreeing to them.”
“it’s okay. but who’s idea is this?”
“kageyama. he said he wants to avenge for all the tosses that he gave you but you missed spiking it.”
“KAGEYAMAAAAA!” after that he speed his way back to the gym.
Bokuto Koutarou
Tumblr media
both of you are clingy to each other. the only time you get to be away from each other is when he have practice and match and also when going home since you live the opposite street to him.
your in each other’s side whenever there’s a break time, lunch and walking home.
so when you got too focused being with the vbc’s managers all day that you didn’t get to eat lunch with him and during break time youre with the managers. it was quite normal to you but to bokuto, no.
he’s not used to you not giving him any attention and not giving him hugs or kisses. he wouldn’t take a day without your affection.
he’s about to spike then when he saw leaving the gym carrying your bag, making him miss akaashi’s set. and that’s when he just lost it. shoulder slouched down, hair down and sadly starring at the door. “y/n-chan left me.”
you’re at the restaurant that yukie have been telling you, about how good their yakiniku is. you received a text from akaashi. “bokuto-san won’t come out of the storage room. please help us, y/n-san.”
you opened the door and you found you’re boyfriend in between the stacked mats, hugging his knees.
“ko, what’s wrong?” he lift his head and met you’re eyes. you were shock to see his teary eyes. you quickly go infront of him and bend down.
“what happened? are you okay? are you hurt?” he nodded. “where?” he just pointed at his chest. “let’s go to the clinic!”
he stopped you when you’re about to go. “my heart hurts because you don’t love me anymore.”
“what?! that’s not true, ko.” you cupped his face. “i love you, okay?”
“really? then why aren’t you spending time with me anymore? no koko, no hug, no kiss.”
“i’m sorry, i didn’t realize that i’m making you feel that way. yukie have been telling me this restaurant where they sell delicious yakiniku, so i went there and buy you one.“
“i thought you went home.”
“no, im sorry i didn’t tell. are you good now?”
“yeah… but i need hundreds of hug and kiss!” he jump on you causing the both of you crash on the floor. you let out a squeal while he just laugh.
“ko, get up! you’re heavy.” he shake his head and tighten his grip on your waist. “i don’t wanna!” he responded.
“if you behave and do well on your practice today, you can stay tonight at my house. we also need to do something about your math, akaashi said you failed at it.”
“AKAASHI PROMISED NOT TO TELL YOU THAT!”
Tendou Satori
Tumblr media
you’ve been busy lately for the upcoming school festival and as a preisident of student council you have to make sure everything will go smoothly.
he seem to not mind it so you just let it be. but in reality he’s been dying to catch your attention and hug him like before.
so tendou decided to come by to your house to check on you and to spend time with you.
it took you minutes before opening up the front door. you we’re happy seeing him and that made you motivated to finish all your paper works. so you quickly go to your room.
"y/n-chan!” he was shock when you didn’t kiss him in the cheeks like you used to do when you see him, you didn’t even greeted him.
it was past 5 when you finished all your work. you tidied it up and hurriedly went down. but to your dismay you didn’t see tendou there.
“mom? did you see satori when you came home”
“no, did he came by?” you nodded. your mom teased you that he might break up with you for not giving him any of your time.
you decided to go to his dorm. you got there in just minutes since its just a walking distance to your home. ypu spotted ushijima at the lobby with the other third years. you greeted them all.
“ushijima, is satori in your room?”
“yes, he was sleeping. you can go there if you want.” you bowed and rush your way to their room.
you spotted your boyfriend laying on the upper bunk of the bed. curled in his blanket. you went up to it and lay down beside him.
it startled him when you hugged him from behind. he abruptly move around to face you. “eh? why are here?”
“im sorry. i got too busy and i didn’t have time for you anymore.”
“it’s okay, i understand. you have responsibilities and i just can’t demand your time. i don’t wanna be a bother to you.” he smiled but there’s still sadness in it. you took a deep breathe and kissed him on his lips. “i thought you’re slowly drifting away from me.”
“i love you with every bits of me. im stuck with you, foreeever.” his eyes went soft, it almost look like he’s close to crying. “you’re not a bother to me, okay? you’re my boyfriend, i gave you your right to demand my time.”
“i don’t think i ever deserve you.”
this happens sometimes when he’s so down then starts to doubt himself, so you always take note to make him feel special and loved. he’s an insucure man because he got a tough childhood.
“you deserve everything, satori. you are the most precious, loving and funny human being i know. please, don’t ever doubt yourself. i love you, always remember that.”
“thank you for choosing me, y/n. i love you so muuuuch!” you hummed and snuggled closer to him.
“mom invited you to eat dinner with us.”
“okay, just give me five more minutes.”
“you know we can continue snuggling at home, right?”
“yeah, continue it to y/n’s house, tendou.”
both of you startled at the deep voice that suddenly appear. “USHIWAKA!”

this moment with yuki stands as a really excellent reminder of where his core socialization struggles started in the series, and shows us where he is currently on his path to healing and better self-esteem.
Tumblr media
it’s been a while since we’ve seen how the general student population treats yuki. obviously we’ve gotten the continuation of the prince yuki girls heavily revering him, but we see this still, too, with the rest of his peers -- now also in part because he’s the student council president, but definitely still due to his reputation as the prince.
this reverence was something that had heavy hand in how he feared being ostracized by his peers, as he was both constantly pushed away from them (above them) because of this false image they had of him, and as he pushed his true self away from them because of his deep social anxiety. he blamed himself for his social standing, simultaneously high and isolating, and believed that any positive traits people viewed him as were fraudulent --
“And I still can’t associate with ‘normal’ people. I don’t mean to turn them away, but some part of me can’t deal with people. I cut myself off from other people because I’m afraid of getting hurt, and because I’m [cursed]… I’m only being nice because I want people to like me… My being nice is entirely selfish.” (ch. 4)
now, as he nears the end of his arc, there’s a visible shift in his character. he’s done a lot of inner work and growth in order to deal with his social anxiety and his self-esteem, and at this point no longer feels isolated or lonely as he did at the start of his story. the isolation he experiences in this scene specifically, while similar to how he was isolated by his peers at the beginning of the story, takes a different color: his self-blame has diminished considerably, in part because he has a social group that knows him as himself, and in part because he doesn’t feel as though he’s faking himself or his kindness around his peers anymore.
there’s still some sadness as his offers for help get denied and he ends up patrolling alone -- while he’s able to look down at this group of friends from afar with some fondness, it’s tinged with something a little bittersweet. he’s experiencing this scenario once again, but from a different and better place in his life. this bout of being alone, while it no longer conflates with loneliness, is still somewhat of a tender spot for him because of how this scenario previously played out for him in the not-so-distant past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now that he isn’t self-loathing about his social anxiety, though, there is a part of his self-esteem that isn’t quite realized yet: viewing himself as someone worthy of befriending because of what he can offer.
this ties thematically with his offers of help being declined, but also with the climax of his character arc in season two -- he doesn’t want to just be someone who receives the benefits of being in a relationship, but someone who can give just as much back. while he was speaking about romantic relationships specifically, this extends to his closest friendships as well. we see him carry a lot of guilt over not being able to give as much back to people like tohru and haru, and is later revealed to be entirely unaware of what he offers in his friendship with kakeru, who considers his friendship with yuki to be the reason why he was able to grow into a better person.
he no longer contends with doubts that people want to be friends with him at all -- it’s been proven to him that people can see the real him and still want to be friends with him, even if he doesn’t necessarily like himself. his issue at this stage in his story is if he has anything to offer, as an individual, that would have others seek him out.
this ties back to his earlier insecurities revolving around kyo and kakeru, and even ties to how he views tohru -- these are people who seem to emit a warmth that others are naturally attracted to. he doesn’t believe the same is true for himself, and while it’s not a point of distress for him anymore, it’s not something he’s entirely grappled with. though he’s more secure in his close relationships with tohru, kakeru, and haru (versus how he felt about his role in these relationships earlier on), he does still wish to be a friend that is sought out specifically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this scene where he finds himself alone, his help having been denied because of his dual role as the student council president and the school prince, and feeling somewhat like an outsider again as he observes a group of friends having fun, leaves him feeling acutely aware of this current dilemma he’s having. it’s only when machi runs into him, and tells him she’s been running around trying to find him just to say hello, that this insecurity is momentarily shattered for him.
[an aside: this issue is never fully addressed in the narrative. while it’s a natural progression in his journey through his social issues and self-esteem to understand how important he actually is in his relationships, the way that it’s concluded offers an awkward commentary on how he views his role in these relationships, which up until this point is the primary focus of his narrative. rather than going the route of becoming more secure in his relationships without needing overt confirmation that his friendship is beneficial, the story instead decides to go the route of him becoming so enamored with being sought out specifically -- by a girl who has no other relationships she feels she can confidently turn to, no less -- that he eventually conflates this with being romantically in love with her, and never returns to address this insecurity he still feels within his friendships. it’s a thread that’s lost in the midst of takaya wanting to wrap up his story with a romance that had very little foundation for the sake of having him have a “happy” ending, i.e. an ending with a romance, despite his narrative being about finding happiness in strong and trusting platonic relationships.]
machi is still a new friend to him at this point, and one that he’s been friendly towards since they started working together. while she’s only just started to warm up to him, his offers of friendship and general kindness towards her never hinged on whether he believed she would eventually become friends with him. he was kind to her for kindness’ sake, especially since she was someone who was otherwise intensely reserved, unsocial, and lonely.
this sounds like an obvious statement because yuki is, on the whole, a kind person, but again: he once believed that he only extended kindness in order to be liked in return. at the beginning of the series, he couldn’t differentiate between him lacking boundaries in order to be people-pleasing, and him being genuinely kind. now that he does understand his own boundaries (as a result of respecting himself more + healing his self-esteem), the kindness he extends is very much of his own unselfish volition.
that said, his kindness is something he acts on without consciously thinking of its benefits -- he doesn’t do kind things in order to receive something in return, or because he expects that his kindness is going to be the singular thing that helps someone. frankly put, he’s not arrogant. but this also means that when someone does overtly show that his kindness has had an effect on them, it catches him off-guard. (i say overtly because yuki’s kindness has had a deep effect on kakeru, too, but it’s very plainly stated that yuki doesn’t know this because kakeru never tells him directly.) machi chasing after him just to say hello isn’t just a sudden leap in their friendship, after she’s more or less appeared to not want to be emotionally involved with her place in the student council -- it’s a direct outcome of him consistently reaching out to her even when she didn’t react or respond. she’s seeking him out individually because he holds that same warmth that he was previously so wanting of.
and he has that warmth because he’s overtly, genuinely kind. that kindness that he previously thought of as being selfish is the benefit he’s doubtful that he possesses as a friend. the very thing that he thought he faked only to get other people to like him is the foundation for why others seek him out and love him -- because from the very start, his kindness has been real.

then and now | kuroo t.
pairing: kuroo tetsurō x f!reader word count: 1863 words, fluff! mutual pining!  warning: manga spoilers, with mention of kuroo’s timeskip occupation summary: always the bridesmaid, never the bride. you thought your time would never come until someone from your past comes along and brings up something you’ve long forgotten. OR where you and kuroo make a silly marriage pact and he shows up after years apart to make it come true.
Tumblr media
He chuckled, now comfortably holding your one hand and hiding it in his pocket to keep it warm. “Here I was wondering if you were waiting for me.
Because I was.”
Tumblr media
The church bell tolls, white doves are released, and joyful cheer and applause erupts from the crowd as the newlywed couple steps out from the cathedral. The now husband-and-wife gaze at each other full of love, and it is a sight guaranteed to make one envious and long for that same kind of affection.
But to you, it’s a scene that you’ve seen so many times that it already feels like a short film played on repeat. For the past year, you’ve lost count of how many weddings you’ve attended – whether as a guest or part of the bride’s entourage – that you’ve acquainted yourself with the workings of the event.
Heck, you’ve even memorized the readings of the priest that if they ever need a replacement, you can be the stand-in and officiate the program.
However, this wedding was different. Your best friend of more than fifteen years is the one who walked down the aisle, and you’re more emotional than you expected you’d be. Earlier in the morning, she woke you up, feeling sentimental, and demanded a pep talk. It was laughable because, more than her, you thought it was you who needed that assurance as you sent off your childhood friend to a new journey in her life.
The whole ordeal felt surreal and somehow, a tad more personal, because it wasn’t just any bride – this was the same girl you grew up with, the one you’ve seen in diapers, the one who held your hand in the playground, the person who you always ran to for boy troubles. Watching her exchange vows and rings felt like a coming to life of a scrapbook page, a long-awaited dream that you’ve talked about together in sleepovers where none of you really slept.
It made you wonder if you will ever march down the same aisle towards the waiting arms of your beloved.
---
“What a wedding, huh?”
The hotel reception was no different to the ceremony that took place prior. This time again, you wore the bride’s maid-in-honor hat and only after making sure that everything – that included the food, drinks, and entertainment – were in place did you take your place on the table and chatted with your old friends from high school.
The conversation started off with comments on how grand, intimate, and special the ceremony was. They talked about how it was wedding season, counting just how many of their schoolmates have already been wed. And before you knew it, eyes were on you and you had an inkling of what would follow.
“So, Yoshioka, your former student council president, turned towards you. “You’re the only bachelorette left in our batch. We’re just curious.”
You laughed awkwardly, “No, please don’t expect a wedding invitation from me anytime soon. I’m still happily single.” The smile you wore felt strained, but whether the other girls recognized it or not, they chose to not comment further.
“Besides, it’s a great source of joy for me just being able to see you guys get married.” Noticing that the lights have begun to dim and focused on the spot on the stage, you clapped your hands, “Now, let’s just enjoy Yukie’s wedding, alright! Look, they’re coming out.”
As soon as the couple walked to the floor for their first dance, you heaved a sigh of relief and slumped in your cushioned chair. They moved gracefully as one across the dance floor, seemingly lost in their own world as they gazed deeply in each other’s eyes and swayed to the tune of the love song.
You thought back to the conversation earlier and weirdly, you felt a pang inside. Truth is, in every wedding you’ve attended, you can’t help but feel wishful. You consider yourself successful in almost every aspect of your life but sometimes, it can feel dejecting when you return home to an empty apartment at the end of a tough workday.
A part of you craved to make that little girl’s dream come true of wearing the wedding dress that you’ve designed, staying up all night for a bridal shower, and walking down the aisle to where your lover was waiting.
When the couple’s first dance ended, the host entered the stage and the program officially began. You could only hope that hours would pass faster.
---
Two hours into the reception and you can already feel the shots kicking in your system.
It wasn’t a really good idea downing five straight shots of tequila. At first, you thought it would quell your nerves, make you let loose and be the funnier version of yourself as you stepped to the podium to deliver your congratulatory speech to the couple.
In retrospect, it looks like the drink did its job as you managed to emit laughter and emotional tears from the crowd as you reminisced on your relationship with the bride, recounting the story of how she fell deeply in love and decided that he was the one.
But now, hunched in your seat with head on your hands, you were seemingly tipsy and all you could think about was escaping outside for some fresh air.
So, you did. When the groom’s best man took the stage, you saw this as an opportunity to quietly slip to the balcony.
Shutting the door behind you with a quiet thud, you eyed the empty balcony and sat towards the nearest bench. The surface was a bit cold as the city was now ushering the season of fall, signaling the arrival of long nights and chilly evenings. You shivered slightly and tucked your coat closer to your body as you stare at the darkness.
You don’t know how long you’ve been outside until you heard the door open and in came a tall, attractive, and oddly familiar man. His face held a warm smile as you noticed that his gaze was directed towards you.
“Long day?”
And it was only until he stepped closer and stood in front of you, the moonlight illuminating his face and accentuating his features, that you realized who he was.
“Tetsurō?!”
When was the last time you saw the Kuroo Tetsurō? You racked your brain for your last encounter with him and your memories point to your high school graduation. All of a sudden, you felt small and your surroundings became hot as you stood in front of him. Your former childhood neighbor. Former best friend. Former crush.
Not that he had any idea about that last item.
“I thought I saw you earlier before the reception started,” he made himself comfortable on the bench, patting the space beside him to urge you to sit as well. “But it’s been so long since I last saw you so of course I thought I was hallucinating. Then you gave a speech on stage – which by the way, I thought was awesome, you’re still as witty as you were before – and my suspicions were confirmed.”
You were breathless. Speechless. What were the odds that your reunion with him would be at a wedding?
“Did Yukie send you the wedding invitation?”
His laugh echoed in the darkness of the night, “Yeah, she did. It was nice to see familiar faces again.” He stared back at you, “I missed everyone.” I missed you, he wanted to say.
You hummed in agreement and without realizing, the two of you engaged in a comfortable conversation with Kuroo leading just as he always did. Being charming just as he always was. Telling you stories from the part of the past that you didn’t know. Catching you up with his present where he now works in the sports promotion division of Japan Volleyball Association.
A small part of you was relieved to know that Kuroo was doing well and successful just as you always hoped he would be. Years of no contact with the boy that stole your heart from day one certainly left you lonely. You wouldn’t say it out loud but he was part of the equation of why you still haven’t tied the knot. It was silly but you always thought that no one could measure up to him.
Absentmindedly, you started fiddling with your fingers, a habit you’ve formed when you were feeling cold, and Kuroo noticed. And just as he always did back then, he enveloped your hands with his and brought them to his lips to blow warm air on them.
“That better?”
Your heart threatened to flutter, “Yeah, thanks.”
After a long while of silence, Kuroo spoke. “I see there’s still no ring on your fourth finger.” He was now nonchalantly stroking your hands, letting his fingers slip in yours.
You coughed nervously, averting your eyes from his deep ones. “Well, I haven’t really found anyone.”
He chuckled, now comfortably holding your one hand and hiding it in his pocket to keep it warm. “Here I was wondering if you were waiting for me.
Because I was.” Oh no, be still my heart, you thought.
Kuroo went on, “Remember that silly pact we made on the night before graduation?”
Your mind takes you back on that evening when you and Kuroo were sitting on the rooftop, away from the noisy crowds and drunk soon-to-be college students. This was your thing, enjoying the calmness and admiring the stars spread out in the night sky.
That evening, you and Kuroo talked about the uncertain future that lied ahead. That evening, you bared your soul to him, letting him in on your worries and you fell apart in his comforting presence. He, as always, acted as your anchor, assuring you that he would always be your biggest supporter and that he’d always cheer on you even from afar.
That evening, with the two of you drunk on the excitement and the many possibilities for the new chapter of life, he brought up a proposal.
“I have a crazy idea.” Kuroo linked his pinkie finger with yours. “If we’re still single and not yet married by the age of 35, I’ll find you and we’ll get married.”
Swept away in the moment and the thrill of the idea, you agreed and sealed the proposal with a harmless kiss.
“You still remember that?” You questioned, not expecting him to actually remember that silly pact. Not expecting him to be holding on to that agreement.
“Sometimes, I wonder where we could be now if I just manned up and asked you out that night instead of pulling that act.” He holds your gaze, careful as he brings a hand to cup your cheek. “I’ve liked you for the longest time. And if you’re still available, if you’ll still have me, I am yours.”
“But we’re not yet 35, Kuroo,” you teased. He chuckled and playfully shoved you before bringing you in an embrace.
“I’ve decided years ago. You’re the only one for me,” he pulls away. “I’m sorry it took me a long time.”
And that night, it wasn’t only your best friend that went home feeling the happiest girl in the world.
Because there was Kuroo who was ready to make up for lost time and give you a reason to look forward to your trips back home.

Fruits Basket Reboot: Analytical  Overview of the Anime
Fruits Basket’s reboot is one of most successful anime reboots since it has:
Amazing story that celebrates human weakness, digs into the depths of human identity & doesn’t shy away from depicting child trauma & abuse. Teaches the values of letting go & walking forward.
The author’s blessing, nostalgia factor from loyal fanbase.
Fixed scheduled 3 season comeback with 63 eps in total planned from the very beginning.
Finished source material with its ending approved by manga fans.
Anime follows the official manga ending.
The “slice of life/shojo” genre doesn’t need budget for fight scenes or big scale realistic animation for its lore.
All these factors contributed to its success, however, this doesn't mean the anime was a masterpiece. It is very good but had issues aren’t in the writing, but rather in the format, overall vision & its effect on characters’ depths.
1. Format:
a. ( Is Fruits Basket an episodic anime or a plot-driving story?)
-The anime couldn’t decide how to adapt the manga content, should it follow it literally & combine two chapters together each time, or take the core plot & drive it by character, or focus on its vision or what? they KNOW that can’t adapt everything. They have 63 eps in total so they have good number of eps to do any choice. However, since the anime is advertised as “ a faithful adaptation” they wanted to cement this announcement in se01 & chose “character of the day” format. Once, the manga fans are assured & hooked, they can drive the rest wherever.
-Se02 was slightly less episodic (minus the beach arc which had perfect pacing). Afterwards, the yuki content was approached similarly to se1 but centered around “ episodic themes”.  Lots of characters arcs are pushed to se3 to keep the “mother” theme of se2. that’s why all eps ended happily minus few eps such as tohru’s nightmare ending in isuzu’s ep.
-Se03 is where the anime really had the biggest issues & couldn’t decided between keeping themes or rolling like a true well-written drama-infused story. Thus we see them trying to keep the episodic themes as long as possible in 5 eps & once ep 6 starts & they can no longer label a flowing plot into themes, they rolled into the climax. The entirety of tohru’s neglected issues outside of her role as a mother was condensed in one ep via audio narration, since ep 7 should drive akito into the climax spot, ep 8 is kyo’s & ep 9 is female antagonist vs female protagonist clash. The rest of the eps focus around wrapping the growth arcs of kyo, akito, yuki & tohru.
I wish they kept the episodic forma for se01 only. Se01 is episodic by design since you can’t maneuver around character introduction, but they should’ve let season 2 & 3 flow smoothly without imposing episodic themes that a junior high schooler could detect, simply because the theme will choose which character fits this ep & which must be cut. Hardly a smart decision for a drama-focused story. Example: Se02 post-beach arc, being “mother tohru” themed meant the cut content of any “teenage girl tohru content”, focusing only on her role as a mother & shoving the rest of “tohru” into the unbelievably packed se03.
b. ( How the seasons are divided & which one is best?)
Lots of fans believed that: se1 (kyo focus), se2 (yuki focus), se3 (tohru focus), I don’t think this is the correct official anime format at all, but rather the fans wishful thinking, here’s why:
se01 isn’t kyo’s focus at all.  Kyo has ONE focused ep each season: se01:ep24, se3: ep9, & se03: ep8. He gets more screen time in se03 to deal with the aftermath of ep8 & to mark his growth & close his arc. But, yuki had more focused eps in se01 than kyo. Example, se01, ep 12, yuki tells the audience abt his dream of new friends, home & new self, sth he achieved gradually ever since that ep ended, thus, Kisa’s ep is a yuki centered ep as well as it marked the beginning of (a) “mother tohru” issues, (b) him deciding to join student council & get out of his comfort zone which is the beginning of “ new yuki”.
se2 is indeed a yuki centered season.
se03 is not a tohru’s focus at all, we still had (akito, shigure, kyo, kureno, momiji, isuzi, haru, machi, motoko, & more yuki) to start or finish their arcs & it is 13 eps only. tho, Tohru had a self-focused role at last which is good.
-I believe the following format better describes the anime’s seasons’ division since it is driven by themes:
se01: Life teachings for the youngsters, due to the direct format of advise given by mother kyoko thro her daughter to the characters/ audience.
se02: Life teachings thro a coming of age story. The trio are struggling to choose a future, afraid & burdened by their trauma’s. Yuki with the help of “mother tohru” , leaves the nest “youngster stage” & sets his foot into the future & struggles to: have fiends, express himself, face his parents, be honest with himself, form an identity & understand himself.
se03: Life teachings of mature issues to those who have already chosen wrong once or twice. bigger issues are presented such as: guilt, death, trauma, extreme self-loath, self-destructive tendencies (kyo), grief, lack of self-esteem, refusing to let go of the past, abandonment issues, constructed polite girl identity with false happy mask (tohru), superiority complex, false forced identity, sins & misdeeds (akito), other themes such as adultery, manipulation, passiveness & enabling can fit the other characters.
So, naturally, season 3 is the richest in content, extremely entertaining story-focused, plot-driven, multi characters depth, plethora of themes, issues & variety of fascinating character writing to distinguish between various arcs & wrap ups. Honestly, se03 carries the whole success since it IS the story of Fruits Basket ( a basket of different fruits & we get to hear/see them all, including the rice-cake!). Still, se03 suffered from the issues of pacing & format I mentioned above, plus condensed content due to short number of eps dedicated to 12 characters.
2. Overall Vision:
Tohru being the main protagonist carries the story’s vision, however, I think Taklaya-san wanted the vision to expand to all her characters. I duno abt the author’s true vision since I haven’t read the manga, but if I were to guess based on the overall story: it is “the acceptance of human weakness”. Yuki isn't the perfect prince, tohru isn't the angelic mom, kyo isn't the horrible monster. These assumptions are the OTHER characters’ perspective of them. Not their true identity or reality. We later even learn that the abusive akito herself, chose a healthier identity, the atoned family head. However, in the anime, characters’ weakness isn’t the center of the anime’s vision, rather its vision is abt the “nurturing effects of the mother figure”, which is supported by the writing as well, but shouldn't be the core driving plot. The anime is more centered around mothers & more narrowly guided. The characters’ weaknesses takes a second seat until the focus on the mother role is over. This does not affect tohru only, but all characters including yuki himself.
-Tohru being the female protagonist shouldn’t be angelic as this contradicts the core theme, thus tohru is given her own set of (human aspects):  trauma, frustrating character traits, faulty coping mechanism: the fake happy mask. Her role as yuki’s mother is only ONE part of her, as big as it is his life & as huge as it is from his perspective. It should NOT be what the audience can only see & feel from tohru. If it is, then Tohru is forever the 16 year-old mother of her peers, sth a normal teenager shouldn't, contradicting the basic existence of the human aspects mentioned above.
a. How does the overall vision being focused on “tohru’s motherly role” affect characters’ depths?
-For Tohru: In the anime, tohru being yuki’s mother lasted for 2 seasons, during that time, we are ONLY allowed to see HER from HIS perspective. Everything abt her human weakness is either vaguely hinted “ few scenes here & there” or pushed to se03. In se01 & 2, tohru is only allowed to act as a “teenage girl” in front of two male characters: (kyo & momiji):
How is tohru depicted in front of kyo & momiji? If you re-watch the anime, once tohru is around these two, her character is very different & she stops giving advice & instead “listen” to them. She is shown more lively & drawn younger & girly, asking more than talking, receiving advice, they both look at her as a normal girl with burdens on her shoulder rather than “savior/care taker”. Kyo complains to her few times abt that & calls her out on her self-denying antics, momoji takes a different approach & subtly provides chances for her to be a “teenage girl”: going to a hot spring & vacation. She opens up to kyo slowly in all her scenes with him, but while she doesn't open up to momiji, she allows herself to show vulnerability & throw her mask a bit in front of him (se01, ep12: she listened to his talk abt his mom, related to him, cried & hugged him with NO advice even tho she didnt tell him abt her mom), se02, she listened to his talk abt his sister, related to him, cried & gave NO advice even tho she didnt tell him she thought abt her mom).
The anime’s heavy focus on her “motherly”side, contradicts showing her as vulnerable & traumatized, hence her backstory lasted for 4 minutes in her own ep, se03, ep6. Later when she faces akito, tohru’s growth kicks in & she starts relating to her issues of abandonment but all this growth came from those 4 minutes of backstory in ep6. In ep9, in front of akito, tohru was depicted just like how she is depicted in all yuki centered eps, ( giving an advice, smiling, a hallow of light around her, the sun rises, the rain stops & she shines her kindness to heal the wounds).
-For Yuki: In the anime, Yuki is shown seeking a mother & all the right monologues & issues are perfectly presented. However, his weakness isn’t only wanting a mother!! yuki is depicted as a prince by others, so a huge part of his growth is to leave the princely persona behind, which is sth that was not focused on in the anime. Outside of his issues on viewing tohru as a mother & wanting friends, yuki continued to be depicted as prince & wasn't much allowed the freedom of being “a normal teenage boy”. Machi narrated that part of his growth, motoko too, but it wasnt depicted much on screen & yuki continued to have dashing bubbles, sparkles, hair flowing on wind & extreme focus on beautiful face. Him becoming a dynamic character outside of his “finishing my tohru-mother confession to my friend” is very short lived. This would’ve easily been fixed if less attention was given to his “mom tohru” phase. He is more than “I used to look at tohru as my mom”.
-For kyo: In the anime, kyo never looked at tohru as a mom, hence from the beginning kyo didn’t fit the overall vision. Hence, all his issues are pushed into se03 when tohru’s “mom role” is finished. There is a reason we have ONE kyo centered ep in se1 & 2. it IS contradicting the current tohru-image of being a mom. Also, kyo’s thoughts are blocked completely for dramatic purposes but he didnt need to be absent from tons of eps which he was, even his growth ever since se01 finale is very subtle in order to not derive from tohru’s image as a mom. We have some scenes of kyo & tohru interacting, but they should be sparse se01, ep 23 (soup ep) or se02, ep2, or short scenes such kyoto scene or tohru’s worried abt her grandpa scene in se2, ep14. Most of kyo’s & tohru’s scenes aren’t solely romantic in their nature but they provide in depth peek into their true personality & identity as humans. With her kyo isn’t angry or annoyed & with him tohru isn’t bubbly with the “I’m okay” mask.
Side Notes:
There is no doubt that the anime was made with respect & love to the source material & the author. I can see this clearly & I don’t deny it at all. This isn’t meant to ridicule them at all. I respect them all plenty.
There is no doubt that the anime team were trying their best & if you like everything, then good for you, if you like some parts & don’t agree with others, then that’s fine. Criticizing is a form of loving, too. Just be respectful.
Preferences, tastes, visions, & outlooks, all differ from one human to another. This is normal & healthy.
The director or decision maker in the anime having different vision from the author is fine, too. After all, he’s a different person. His perspective & understanding of her characters is different. Disagreeing with him is fine. All medium of art are exposed to the audience perspective. I disagree with him on lots of creative decisions such as reliance on monologues, wide shots on intense moments, lack of zoom on facial expressions, most parallel scenes are very in the nose, need for exaggerated drama & over dramatic drawing of tohru & akito at times.
You can even differ with the writer herself on some parts of her writing, that’s fine, too.
I enjoyed this anime lots, it helped me make new friends, discuss lots of fascinating content, & practiced writing short critical reviews, which is sth I’ve missed from my college days!
I love the writing for the main male characters: Yuki & Kyo. I love their arcs so much! Yuki got the best focus on his core issues. Kyo, in particular surprised me as I used to think, due to the minimum content on him, that he’s only the secondary rival of the main male protagonist. But kyo’s story turned out fascinating & very psychological informed.
Still, the anime is lacking to me for its depiction & presentation of women. The main female characters (Tohru & akito) are lacking realistic depiction of their core issues & time dedicated to that.  The focus on tohru’s mom role steals from realistic existence as a character on her own right. Akito is a villain for so long & her atonement is quick & her love story is quicker. Both females didn’t get to tell us their traumatic backstory in detail like the boys & they didn’t have enough focus on their human side.
Altho kyo had (1) way less screen time than yuki or even tohru, (2) his true backstory was only revealed in the climax, (3) his inner thoughts were blocked for suspense, he was written wearing his emotions on his sleeve from ep1, so, we grew to feel for him & dreaded what could’ve broken such endearing boy, hence, once it was shown we understood the psychological trauma that destroyed him. One third of the puzzle of his story was revealed each season gradually. (1) se01 (true form), (2) se02 (his bet with akito, knowing kyoko & loving tohru), (3) se03 (His whole backstory including the abusive father).
I wouldn’t say, I wish tohru was given the (yuki treatment) cuz then we’ll need more than 13 eps for se03, I just wished her story & emotions to at least be given the (kyo treatment): Divided into clear thirds (parts).
The anime is a lovely treat that I can recommend to lots of ppl with ease. You dont have to be into shojo to get into it, but it’ll undoubtedly trick you into its subtle main love story that subvert most shojo tropes. The other love stories are good as well, there’s a type of love for every fan!
There’s a number of platonic friendships which is very refreshing!
My Final Verdict of the anime: Very Endearing as it tugs at my heart!

ANIME UPDATE V2 50
Happy Number 50! Expect another lookback post to soon follow.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - After the first episode ended with the world breaking apart at Mirai’s say so, this next one shows us Tokyo getting demolished by the recurring quake, as swathes of people panic and flee to find shelter from the disaster, others are searching for exits or for lost companions, while others still are getting buried by the falling debris. Through all of this, Mirai keeps calling out for Yuki, terrified that her little brother might’ve been among those who perished, as she recieves help from the woman named Mari. Yuki turns out alright (for now!), but the ordeal was so harrowing and stressful to watch. Aftershocks aside, things seem to be settling back down by the end.
Hunter x Hunter - Watched the final battle with Team Genthru, fought by Gon, Killua, and Biscuit. Killua’s win was fairly easy and reliant on the yo-yo techinques he’d mastered, and Bisky’s even easier as we got to see her transform into her Super Woman true form, Gon’s fight with Genthru was more of a challenge and more of a frustration since at least twice Gon insisted on pushing himself hard as possible against Genthru’s deadliest moves rather than sticking to the agreed upon plan for capturing him. But at least Gentru was defeated, with his life and those of his teammates even being spared as our hero trio aquired the cards they need to finally beat this game.
Fruits Basket - Just Part 2 of the Rin Sohma story I left on. Certainly not as heavy or memorable as the episode preceding it, especially due to Student Council Antics resurfacing at the school, but still very informative and valuable in how it bonds Tohru and Rin closer together, as both girls want more than anything else to break the Zodiac curse on the Sohma Family. Towards the end, Tohru has a nightmare that flashes back to how her mother left her the morning of the fatal accident, and Rin wishes for Tohru to find someone to love who can save her from her despair, just like how Haru did for her.
Re:ZERO - As I’d expected, Subaru is in a major slump following Emilia cutting ties with him, as he now stays at Karsten Manor and trains with Wilhelm. Reinhart tries to reconcile with him, and hopes he and Julius could bury the hatchet too, but Subaru’s too much of a proud and petulant shithead to want to go along with that. I liked getting more from Crusch and Felix, meeting Otto Suwen, and getting to see Subaru’s darker nature continue to grow as even Rem ends up leaving him on his own. But that also ties into the one thing that was not landing for me - Rem. Why is she here? She wasn’t kicked out of Emilia’s Camp, so why be with Subaru at Karsten’s? What about Ram? Did we not just have an arc that stressed how important and inseparable Ram and Rem are to each other? Yes, Rem opened her heart up to Subaru more, but there was nothing to suggest she now wanted to be like a loyal pet to him! So I just couldn’t get into whatever was going on with Rem towards the end because I was confused by her very presence here the whole time. But the last scene was appropriately disturbing. What IS this cult?
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Since this anime is really a second animated adaptation of Fate/Stay Night, we’re now at the point of retreading the ground covered before in the Studio Deen anime, with the entire meeting with Kirei at his church and then the episode ends on Ilya and Berserker’s appearance just like what happened in the first anime. The best part was getting to see the scene, or rather hear the scene with Crispin Freeman as Kirei, he’s just as great here as he was in Fate Zero and fits the character as well as Jamieson Price, if not better. Hope for more of him this time!
Symphogear G - Watched the two special gag OVAs that’s just a bunch of different silly shorts depiciting cute and funny stuff that happened to the characters at certain points of time. OVA 1 is set almost entirely in the time gap between the grand finale of the first season and the last scene of that same season, while the second covered different points in time of the G season. Both were very fun, and I especially like how Maria benefits from the more comedic bits.
MAR - Since there were no more rounds in the War Games ever dubbed, I just sped through watching the remainder of the dubbed anime, which featured one breather episode with some important set-up with Ian (and Rapunzel finally getting killed off, YAY!), two filler episodes starring Alviss and Dorothy respectively, a four episode filler arc in Alain’s training domain, and the finale appropriately being the  “final battle with Phantom”. I put that in quotations ‘cause it turns out to be as much a final battle as Jack’s with Aku was in the “Aku’s Fairy Tales” episode of Samurai Jack - it didn’t really happen! It was All Just A Dream! After pulling a rip-off like that on me, I can’t say I’m gonna miss watching this show. It’s good fun, but I can find better.
Gintama - Tatsuma Sakamoto was mentioned before, but it wasn’t until this episode that we finally got to meet him, learn of his past history with Gin, and understand what he’s all about. We also meet his business manager Mutsu, who is clearly from the same alien clan as Kagura but this isn’t addressed at this point on the show. The one other most noteworthy thing about this episode is that it’s one where this corny, minimal effort dub really hindered it, as I had to hear Gintoki’s name pronounced “Gintucky” over and over and over again.
AND
Akudama Drive - Finished the series with its entire second half. This was a wild ride from start to finish, got a bit heavy in some places towards the end, and concluded with all the main characters sans Brother and Sister dying. That’s about as much I can say about that.

Hi, Can we maybe get a part two of the Manabe x Sohma reader, like where maybe Manabe confronts Akito in a way and begs to be with the reader while some of the other sohmas are watching and Akito Agrees, thank and sorry if it’s a lot to understand but have a good day
Tumblr media
Heya, again I’m doing as well as I can in the pandemic, I hope you are as well and keeping safe! Thank you for checking in with me! ✨✨✨
@winniethepoohperio-d, I merged your request into this one. I’m also going to forego half of the details given. 😄😄😄
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Character: Kakeru Manabe
Prompt: School festival with a Sohma!reader
Tumblr media
Patience wasn't a virtue Manabe possessed naturally. It didn't come to him as easily as it seemed to be one with Yuki, much like how Tohru was the embodiment of it. He had to be conscious of it, to feel it, to frustrate himself in order to know that patience was worth the while.
The buzz of the schoolground was an opportune moment for the both of you to hang out. You who had avoided him after the confession and admission. Him not trusting himself to be patient if he was alone with you. It was only with others around that he dared to be around you, and it seemed that you had much decided the same as well.
"Ready?" the male had inquired when finishing up the venue. The school festival had already started, but the work was never ending. Where the students excitedly shouted, trying to garner as many customers in as possible, the thrum of the crowd accompanied, excitedly moving along as they visited the stalls. The student council and a few other students were still setting up the last stages, some of the organisation needing to be done live rather than in advance.
"Ready!" came the call of the technical support, and the male threw up his arms in satisfaction, planting them on his hips as he proudly stood, exclaiming;
"Then I'm going to get some food!"
It was no secret that Manabe had been looking forward to the food stalls in particular, like many students did at the school festival. But it had been a special motivator to the student council member when he felt like giving up on his tasks as he excitedly shouted out something akin to: "takoyaki!" or "waffles!" or something similar to switch savoury and sweet on and off and sometimes with a drink between to wash it all down and cleanse his palette. It was as such also no surprise to know that he had already turned towards the closest food stall on the campus, which happened to be hotdogs. The many complaints of its (too) tantalising scent being subject of many a nuisance for the hour he had been busy with setting the last hands to the stage he was overlooking.
"Ahoy! One of those please, without the pickles!" the male had already called, wanting to blurt out a drink to accompany with, when you joined his side, falling into step as naturally as the day before his confession.
"And one for me as well," you had confidently stated, pretending not to notice the surprised look on the brunet's face who eyed you in rare suspended silence before recovering himself with a wide beaming smile and a firm nod.
"Just one, or maybe half! I'm planning to try every stall!"
The exclamation had been a bold one, for there were a great many stalls and the spending budget of a student was limited as was the space in their stomach. But you were at his side and ready to tag along and the male was grateful for at least that.
"Crêpes first," you had insisted afterwards, pointing at the stall next. Manabe didn't object, finishing his hotdog in several bites as he came along.
"Yakisoba!", "chocolate bananas!", "onigiri!".
The food followed each other up in quick succession. Faster than he could chew at times, more than he could take, but the two of you kept occupied, eating and finishing and hunting the next stall.
It was only when the two of you sat down with some ice-cream under the shade of a tree that silence fell between. The sun by then was lowering and the day was coming to an end. And though the last events still needed to come and the closing speech still hours ahead you both felt exhausted and ready to slip into a food coma.
"How have you been?" he asked you, the first address specifically targeted at you, and Manabe realised how long it had been since the two of you had been alone like this. In all the confusion and discomfort he had forgotten how comfortable it was to be next to you. Patience came naturally when he was with you.
"I have missed this." Your words were not a surprise, he felt the same. To be with you, in silence or eating, just with you, felt natural.
And so Manabe said the only thing that came to mind; "same," and the sigh that deflated from him went with the rest of his energy.
Yuki would later ask where his right hand was, a little irked as he crossed the school grounds in search of a missing member. He had even asked Tohru to help, knowing how Machi would punch the guy in the gut instead. As much as Manabe deserved that Yuki likened to lessen that blow and keep it for another day.
But when he found the both of you in the courtyard, underneath the shade of the tree the president just sighed in relief.

Yuki doesn't get a ton of screen time in this episode, but it's such an important one for his character development. Throughout the series, he spends a lot of time focused on reciprocity in his relationship with Tohru; he really fixates on the hat moment from their childhood as one time that he was able to support her, and not the other way around. So in this instance, Yuki is looking at Rin, who is in need of support in much the same way that he was at the beginning of the series. And of course it’s not something that Tohru would ever admit, but I think Yuki can tell that it’s taking a toll on her. Their friendship has progressed far enough that he’s better at reading her than he used to be.
When Shigure says “Will you keep letting yourself be cared for?” he’s asking if Yuki is going to continue to rely on Tohru’s emotional labor or if he’s going to step outside his comfort zone. And Yuki isn’t going to keep leaning on Tohru alone for support. We know this because the next scene shows us Haru - who has always been observant of Yuki’s growth - handing him over to Kakeru and the student council for safekeeping.
Yuki has been gradually making new friends and becoming more comfortable around the student council, but this is a huge leap of faith for him, and it’s absolutely not something he would have been able to do if he hadn’t had Tohru in his life. He’s been coming into his own and making new friends outside of Tohru and her crew, but I think this episode cements that as a more conscious decision on his part. And it also shows him doing something for her; that is, learning to seek out support in other places so that he’s not putting the burden on Tohru all the time.
