The way Jimmy's whole thing was elder care, the way jimmy pulled himself from slipping Jimmy on his own volition because he was exploiting that elderly woman, and now he sees that again in Marion right as he's at his darkest and most depraved and it snaps him out of it.....and a device made for elder care ended up being his undoing. It's literal poetry....

Analyzing the Merging Jimmy/Gene/Saul/Viktor Personas + Why We Needed the Jesse / Kim Scene

Last week (copied under the ***** below) I observed the deliberate, visual merging of Jimmy/Gene/Saul/Viktor and I’ve copied and pasted it here to add more after last night’s episode, “Waterworks.”

Significantly, “Waterworks” references both, the weather during the scene with Jesse and Kim in front of Saul Goodman’s Breaking Bad era office, AND to Kim’s sprinkler job, where Gene, under the Viktor persona, reached out to Kim and she told him to turn himself in, to his fury. The Jesse and Kim scene symbolized another transition - the end of Jimmy as Kim knew him, and beginning of Saul as Jesse and Walt come to know him.

We knew Saul successfully represented Jesse’s partner and Krazy 8’s cousin, Emilio twice. By the time Jesse and Walt meet him, Jesse’s confident in identifying him as a criminal lawyer/ “the real deal.” This meaningful scene demonstrates Saul signing away his life as Jimmy; he identifies that life as one with Kim, and he literally signed the divorce papers right before this scene. Kim exits his life, and in the last part of her conversation with Jesse, he asks, “so this guy, is he any good?” And she says, “when I knew him, he was.” But now, he’s breaking bad, and he’s already there before Walt ever meets him. Through Kim and Jesse’s seen, we saw another visual transition.

The Viktor/Gene phone call to Kim symbolized the end of “Viktor” as Jimmy knew the persona, and his fate of remaining trapped as Gene eternally, whether he dies, gets locked up, or continued on, bored, tired, and reckless, leaving us to imagine the outcome. We already KNOW the outcome. Jimmy never turned into Saul, Gene, OR Victor. He’s just always been the same person, getting progressively worse as time goes on.

I’ve noted some people questioning if the scene with Jesse and Kim was necessary (if we had to see Jesse there). In my analysis, the answer is absolutely, yes. It serves this “transition” idea, Jimmy becoming different versions of this person he’s always been, and the people, crucial to his life, who all knew him differently.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, and the below part written last week.

The visual transitions, back and forth from the BCS and Gene eras also struck me as telling for this character we’ve watched for years now, wondering about defining moments that would explain drastic shifts in his character. The writers shocked us initially by seeming to glaze over all that, but now I see why.

Those transitions blended Saul and Gene so perfectly, and Gene exhibits clear relics of Jimmy’s character, even going back to the Viktor-with-a-k identity from his early pranking days. Gene channels Jimmy because he IS Jimmy and he IS Saul. The scenes between Saul and Gene blend impeccably to the point that it looked for a second that Gene was there in the desert on the ground before we zoomed into him laying in bed. That’s the point. It’s the same guy. It’s been the same guy, now we’re finally learning who he’s always been, and it’s these characteristics that are taking him down.

Driving this point home for me: when Jimmy tried to convince Kim to stay and telling her she’d one day forget all about what they’d done/ the horrible things that happened, that sounded like he was channeling the advice Mike gave to him, back when he got into the dangerous situation because he was in over his head, “dragged” into the situation, but really he got there himself because he couldn’t turn down the money Lalo agreed to pay. This time, when Gene tried to persuade Buddy to proceed with robbing this man with cancer, it reminded me of Lalo persuading Jimmy and Kim to kill Gus, telling them they could do it and it was no big deal. That’s how far gone Jimmy/Saul/Gene is; he sounds like the same guy Saul is so terrified of when he meets Jesse and Walt, making it perfect that the episode began with and featured that scene.

I'm going to go back to talking about the more monochrome characters (I'm working on Mike and Howard right now), but I feel like talking about Jimmy, our protagonist, who has no assigned color. Instead, he's a mix of all of them.

This is partly due to his unstable sense of identity - he is Jimmy Mcgill and Slippin' Jimmy and Saul Goodman and Gene Takovic and Viktor St. Clair. He never seems to have a good grasp on who he is and fluctuates wildly depending on the situation. As a conman, he's a chameleon, becoming whoever he needs to be to achieve his goals.

But at the same time, I feel like that reading paints his colorfulness as a pathology. It is sometimes, but look at the rainbow in this picture. Think of Kim asking Jimmy if he's going to be "colorful" with his law practice. Think of the Inflatable montage and Jimmy's joyful reveal of his colorful new wardrobe.

Jimmy's colorfulness is not a bad thing. Or at least, not only a bad thing. His stint at Davis & Main shows how miserable he is trying to fit in with the straight-and-narrow world. I don't think the message is that Jimmy is supposed to try harder. In fact, painting over the rainbow in his shared office isn't portrayed as Jimmy triumphantly leaving his colorful past behind. It's gloomy.

In season 1, Mike gives some advice to Daniel/Pryce about the difference between criminals and bad guys - "I've known good criminals and bad cops, bad priests and honorable thieves." He tells him, "You are now a criminal - a good one or a bad one, it's up to you."

The legal (blue) and the illegal (red) characters don't fall neatly into good and evil. Likewise, Jimmy didn't have to always play it straight to be a good person. His colorfulness can be nasty and destructive, but there's also an ingenuity and playfulness to his benign schemes. For example, it was his colorful nature that led to him uncover the abuse at Sandpiper.

Jimmy's problem isn't that he needs to try harder to fit in. His problem isn't that he needs to mold himself to Chuck's idea of a good person, which would be its own kind of tragedy - a quieter, less harmful one, but still sad. His problem is that he needs core values to anchor him. His tragedy was that he was never able to establish them for himself.

thinking about the way jimmy called her as "viktor st clair." the way we see that first as a one-off character he invented to scam ken out of the zafiro añejo. with no indication he'd used it before ever but we quickly see the two of them adopt "viktor and giselle" as their scam personas... just as a way to celebrate how much it means to them, how fun it is to do this stuff together. and how in breaking bad jimmy is in the bar still scamming people as "viktor." alone now. i think that sums up "saul goodman" too, he was a one-off character that was forged and kept to out of their relationship and love for each other, and mutual love for the grift. but now he's continuing on in that persona alone, forever a half separated from its whole. and that's why he called her under that name, he was looking for his giselle

the phone call between gene and kim. when he’s ranting and raving on the other end of the line, says the pot to the kettle!, you can tell that kim is aggravated and pissed off and wants to hang up. her hand is jerking her face is contorting into a look of indignation. it isn’t until gene slows down and just says her name. kim. kim? that her face crumples for JUST A MOMENT. like she’s going to start to cry. thinking about who he is underneath all of his bravado, thinking about the times she’s heard him say her voice that desperately before. So she rights herself and simply says I’m glad you’re alive and hangs up, seemingly proud of herself for getting it out by the way she slams down the phone and shrugs. Because think about it. kim definitely heard about what happened in abq. and she definitely assumed that he was dead and buried in the desert, never to be found. so when she gets a call from viktor st claire? she’s stunned into silence for a moment, then angry and indignant that he’s calling her and acting like such an asshole, like SAUL GOODMAN, and then finally she’s just sad and relieved and permanently altered by this short conversation. Anyways how is everyone’s morning going
