My WIPs

In no particular order, here are my WIPs that nag me the most but which I either no longer want to work on or they no longer want to work with me, if you get my drift.

Wolf People 3 - Twilight fanfic, sequel to my existing fics Wolf People and Wolf People II; Leah gets kidnapped by a coven of vampires. My boyfriend has been cowriting it with me, but he wanted to take the plot to a direction that I don't like. I eventually lost interest in finishing it.

Elspeth Dwyer (working title) - sequel to I'm Not Bella (in which Bella's half-sister meets Renesmee); in this fic, Elspeth meets Beulah (my OC from "After Sunset") and they become vampire hunters together.

Razing Selene - Underworld fic; in which Selene falls in love with Raze instead of Michael, and Michael becomes the villain somehow.

Figurehead - Hunger Games fic; in which Prim becomes District 13's Mockingjay after Katniss and Peeta successfully commit suicide at their Hunger Games. I stopped writing because I couldn't get the climax to work.

The Red Tide - The Little Mermaid fic; in which an adult Urchin becomes the new King of Atlantica (maybe) following an act of heroism

Nothing Lasts Forever (working title) - Twilight fic inspired from Midnight Sun; non-vampire AU in which the story unfolds in Edward's POV, revealing that Bella's version is an elaborate delusion/hallucination. My other OCs make an appearance.

Bella's Trials at Salem - Harry Potter/Twilight crossover in which Bella is a student at the Salem Witch Institute; I didn't get past the first chapter.

Guard Dog - sequel to Bree Cullen, My Daughter; Bree leaves America and settles with her werewolf boyfriend (OC) in Europe, where they get kidnapped by the Romanian coven, who are planning to overthrow the Volturi.

Night Vision - Zootopia fic; Nick and Judy go to the Nocturnal District following a murder in Savanna Central while bats are moving out of the Nocturnal District en masse.

Lupine - sequel to Wolf People 3; Jacob and Renesmee have a daughter with antisocial personality disorder; meanwhile Leah's children are phasing, too.

7 Types of Conflicts

You may have heard of these conflicts before, maybe in school or while browsing the web. Wherever you learned it, these base conflicts are extremely common in literature. Ask yourself: which of these conflicts appear in my story?

1) Man vs. Man

This is probably the most common external conflict there is. Nearly every story you read will have some kind of character vs. character conflict. This type of conflict can range anywhere from arguments, physical fights to a massive hero vs. villain battle.

This is Katniss vs. Cato. This is also Katniss when she gets angry at Peeta for “making her sound weak” in their interviews. This is every Tribute trying to be the last one standing.

2) Man vs. Society

Does your story include a dictatorship? A corrupt government? Is there an organization trying to shackle your character? Typically your character will work against them to bring their lies to light or completely tear them down.

This is Katniss vs. The Capitol. This is when she shoots the apple during her display of skills. This is where she destroys the dome in Catching Fire.

3) Man vs. Nature

Mother Nature can be brutal and unrelenting. This type of conflict usually forces the character to survive against the odds of earth. Is your character lost in the wilderness and on the verge of starvation? Is a massive tsunami about to crash into their homeland?

This is Katniss surviving the climate, hunger and animal conditions of the Games.

4) Man vs. Supernatural

Is your character facing something that is unexplainable by their definition of logic? Ghosts, witches, mythical creatures, aliens? An angered God who wishes to smite all of humanity? Perhaps a demon who has crawled his way up from hell to devour your characters soul.

This is Sam and Dean Winchester as they fight to eliminate the supernatural creatures of the world. This is the vampire hunter vs. the vampires.

5) Man vs. Technology

Have robots taken over the world? Is your character glued to their phone/computer/VR all hours of the day and as a result it’s affecting their personal life? This conflict can be as huge as murderous androids roaming earth or as mundane as your character not able to crack the password of the bad guys computer.

This is Neo and the survivors of The Matrix fighting against the Machines and Programs of their universe.

6) Man vs. Self

This is an internal conflict. This is when your character is having an inner battle with themselves. They’re questioning their beliefs, their fatal flaws are messing everything up for them. They hate themselves or they want to change but can’t.

This is Katniss not wanting to kill anyone, because that’s just not who she is, but choosing to for her own survival.

7) Man vs. Fate

The chosen one, the prophecy that your character will bring forth the end of the world, the tragic reality that your character was born to be sacrificed to the Gods. This is when your character fights against fate and for their free will. They refuse to accept that their only reason for existing is totally out of their control.

Harry Potter—the boy who lived. The one who is destined to defeat Voldemort.

Okay, Bean, but how many of these conflicts should I include into my story?

That’s up to you. Every author will have a different opinion. You should at least have one of these for sure, but you could have all seven if it works with your story. One of these conflicts could be your main one, while a few others are attached to subplots or minor situations!

Let's talk about conflict!

One of the key things you are taught when you first start learning to construct a narrative is that there must always be conflict. That conflict is the motor driving the plot forward. Without it, there is no tension, no compelling reason for people to turn the page or click on the next chapter. You need your audience to want to know what the resolution of the conflict will mean for your characters.

You probably have already thought about the main conflicts of your story but the smaller conflicts also require consideration as they make up the building blocks of your scenes.

Conflict not only drives the plot but adds depth to your characterization because the audience gets an enhanced sense of them by seeing how they respond to their problems. If your character was desperate for money would they beg on the street? Become a sex worker - or a master thief? Would they just take whatever job they could find regardless of how unsuitable? Would they sell an organ? Different solutions to the same problem.

Conflict is also great for demonstrating the rules of your story’s world. The challenges your characters face manoeuvring through their difficulties will tell your readers a great deal about the world the characters live in. Example: Harry just wants to get back to Hogwarts but Dobby the House Elf arrives at Privet Drive and sabotages Vernon’s dinner party with a floating dessert resulting in Harry being imprisoned in his bedroom until the Weasley’s rescue him in a flying car. An entire setting sketched out through interconnecting conflicts without unnecessary exposition.

Conflict doesn’t have to mean monsters or villains. These “battles” can be very subtle but still effective.

Let’s look at some types of conflicts you might not have considered:

Person vs. Self. Your protagonist (or other) must overcome a lie or flaw of character to resolve their conflict. A common one is a character with deep-seated insecurities discovering confidence and self-worth (as in Dumplin’ or Baby Cakes). Another often seen example is in Rom Coms where one of the potential lovers has begun the relationship with one agenda (like a journalist writing a story) but then has to come clean when real feelings become involved.

Person vs. Person. This is your clear cut hero versus villain, white hat versus black hat scenario. Two main characters with competing goals are pitted against each other.

Person vs. Society. A character struggling against the cultural norms or an unjust society. It’s Mr Rochester deciding to marry his ward’s governess (Jane Eyre). Katniss thwarting the Capitol’s plans with her plan for her and Peeta to suicide rather than turn on one another (The Hunger Games). This type of conflict will arise whenever your character’s worldview is out of step with the majority or those in power.

Person vs Nature. A character trying to survive against the elements. It’s Robinson Crusoe being shipwrecked, or your character stuck in a snowbound cabin.

Person vs. Supernatural. I mean this could be the obvious vampire hunter or exorcist stories but this category can cut far deeper into crises of faith or a character’s exploration of their relationship with the divine and the universe.

Person vs. Technology. This is more than just the science fiction genre of I, Robot or The Terminator - it is the Dickensian images of children working in the cotton mills or down mines. For those of you as old as me, it is Michael Keaton in Gung Ho (released as “Working Class Man” in some countries) fighting against retrenchments due to automation at his manufacturing plant.

You can always mix several types together to suit your tone - there are some that clearly go together - a person who is in conflict with society may also experience a crisis of faith and conflict with the community (like a gay character coming out to their family in an ultra-conservative town).

There are a million different worksheets and resources that can be found online to help you plot out your characters inner and out conflicts. Ultimately, however, you need only be able to answer two questions:

What does my character want?

What/Who is standing in their way?

By posing these questions as you draft each part of your story you can ensure there is the necessary conflict present in every scene to drive your story to the conclusion.

I know that a lot of the trans-community and lot of longtime Harry Potter fans are divided and disowned the series over Rowling's comments. I still love the books and movies despite what happened as it was still part of my childhood and just pretending to hate it is just like saying I never liked it. Until things mellow over, people are gonna be angry and I don't blame them. So while things settle in, I have some suggestions over book series in case any of you happen to be looking for a new series.

The Hex Hall Series by Rachel Hawkins

Need a new wizard role model, look no further.

An underrated gem of a wizarding series kept in the shadow of Harry Potter. If any of you have been asking for a female version of Harry Potter, this is honestly the closest you'll ever get. Meet Sophie Mercer, a 16-year-old witch who sent off to an all magic boarding school.

Here are a few bonuses that might help convince you.

There's a lesbian vampire called Jenna as Sophie's roommate/best friend. However, unlike most LGBT characters in media, this isn't bashed over your head like a game of Whack-a-mole. It's brought up twice in the first book which is twice as many times Dumbledore's sexuality as been brought up any of the six HP books.

There is a female version of Malfoy too. Her name is Elodie Parris. She is the leader of a coven of dark witches and is desperate to try and get Sophie to join in as she's the only other dark witch. They have a rivalry going as there's a love triangle in the first book between them and Elodie's boyfriend Archer Cross. She may not have the power to call upon her father like Malfoy (My father will hear about this!) But she does serve as a worthy rival to main character Sophie.

The love triangle is not the main focus of the series. Oh look, yet another love triangle, I've seen this before. Peeta and Gale, Edward and Jacob, Brenda and Teresa, the list goes on and on. But unlike these series, it's not the main focus as it's mostly contained in the first book of the series even then, it's not the main focus of the book. Sophie may love Archer but her crush isn't her priority until later towards the end.

It's lore and diverse characters. There's more than just witches attending Hex Hall, as there are werewolves, shapeshifters, faeries, and as I mentioned before vampires attending the school with Sophie. They do bring up biblical lore and history such as the battle of heaven and how angels who choose neither heaven nor hell were banished to earth with them becoming either witches, faeries, or shapeshifters. Despite there being a group of supernatural hunters called 'Eye of God' they don't paint the witch characters as devil worshippers like in most media.

Female Representation. This has a wide range of badass female characters, from the villain to the headmistress, to the defense teacher to the werewolf who ends up befriending Sophie, there's no shortage of memorable female characters. Even it's spinoff School Spirit is given the main female protagonist.

Its made by Hyperion Books, the same publishing company as Percy Jackson.

And lastly, it has yet to be adapted. Most would say this is a negative towards the series. I would disagree. This is an amazing series and to see it get adapted would be fantastic and hopefully, they'll be some fan traction to give it the proper adaptation it deserves. Until they, we still have time to enjoy the books and fan cast the characters. If Harry Potter could be given an adaptation, why couldn't Sophie Mercer?

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard Series by Rick Riordan

Not what you're looking for, or want to support Trans/(non)binary characters in media? You should totally check out my dear Uncle Rick's series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard for it's an amazing representation of Alex Fierro.

Alex Fierro is both Transgender and Gender Fluid. Canonically in the Riordanverse, Alex is the third LGBT character after Nico Di Angelo and Will Solace. Alex goes mostly by female pronouns (so I'm mostly gonna address Alex using female pronouns since that's how Alex is normally addressed as) but she has her male days so there are times she will be addressed as he. Alex will change her voice depending on her current gender. Honestly, I love Alex not only as a trans character of color but as a character in general. She is badass in her own right and seeing Rick normalizing Magnus and Alex's relationship is so satisfying as it's not often we get a trans relationship like this, particularly with the second kiss since Alex is going by male pronouns at that time, making it the first same-sex kiss in any of Riordan's books (sorry Solangelo shippers). Riordan was risking a lot when writing Alex but whatever he was trying to do, he clearly succeeded with Alex. Now if there's any Trans character that needs your attention, it's Alex Fierro.
