if you could bring back one styling that you think wasn't appreciated in its time or the fans weren't ready for (but are now) or just think should be around again, which would it be? (hard round: something other than TVXQ's "Triangle" styling) (and I already know the #1 is Pink Gumby)

(kicks rock) ok FINE i won't immediately say triangle.........

my first instinct is actually something that DID get its due appreciation: arario!! it was genuinely ahead of its time (both in styling and musical composition), and if vixx hadn't done shangri-la we might never have seen a traditional/hanbok styling trend in kpop. but realistically this is kind of a tough question to answer because most trends in kpop styling have been recycled already in some way. i could say something like we should bring back the goofy looks for the early '10s but realistically that's already happened as much as it's going to without completely reverting silhouettes and clothing construction, which is not going to happen. and also i don't think most of those looks were underappreciated at the time. the most frequent type of look that is oft derided by fans and underutilized by creative staff are the infrequent forays into science fiction concepts. songs like 100%'s beat and more famously vixx's error were quite controversial for no legitimate reason, although honestly i don't remember how beat was received since vixx overshadowed them significantly (justice for 100% actually. the beat styling is better), but considering nobody remembers 100% even existed i'll consider it underappreciated. tbh in the current styling landscape of kpop my beef is less with fans not appreciating a styling (bc fans know exactly jack shit about costuming and will accept anything, even obvious garbage) and more with stylists who are unwilling to actually flesh out a concept. this applies to pretty much everything but i see it most obviously in scifi (and fantasy/horror etc, anything that's not boy/girl next door or school) concepts. one of the few cbs that i do desperately want to have a go around again is obsession bc please god can i finally have ksoo and minseok on the song, but also it's a fantastic concept that got most of the way there, it just could have been so much more interesting out if the stylists weren't cowards.

once you get kicked out of an sm group the black listing is intense. jessica and those 3 former members of tvxq can’t go on korean entertainment tv AT ALL. the ndas are strong too. jessica hasn’t directly been able to speak about it and she most likely never will bcs she’ll get sued if she does. the only info we’ve been able to get from her is when she indirectly implies things or when she writes about it in a book disguised as ‘fiction’. unless there’s a given time frame on the nda i don’t think we’ll ever hear what really went down

jessica confirming she was voted out of snsd by the majority of the members makes me wonder about 2 things: 1) does that mean exo voted that jongdae should remain a part of the group? and 2) does that mean nct voted to kick lucas out?

Therefore, despite my busy schedule, I moved forward the original plan and released this "Love Song". The entire production and recording process of this song was done in English, which is very different from my past works, which were mainly Korean or only mixed with some English. During the recording, I specially invited a professional English singing teacher to guide the pronunciation and pronounce words. Jun Hyung: I usually dress casually and comfortably, but because I had the opportunity to meet a VOGUE MAN reader today, I wanted to dress up a bit more handsomely, so I chose this outfit. For the photo shoot, I will wear another interesting look, which can highlight my two styles. But in private, I prefer comfortable clothes, especially now that the weather is so hot. But even when I go casual, I try to find a few special touches that make my look comfortable and personal.

"Vogue Man" Hong Kong: What's your favorite look and item today?

Jun Hyung: Although I like the suit I'm wearing now, if I had to choose, I would still prefer the first look of the day - the pair of work pants paired with a colorful top. This casual style is more in line with my daily dressing style, and I feel very comfortable and fashionable.

"Vogue Man" Hong Kong: Dragon PD This time you are coming to Hong Kong after a long absence of 5 years. How do you feel about it?

Jun Hyung: To be honest, I can’t remember how long it was last time I came to Hong Kong. But when I set foot on this land again, the memories of my previous time in Hong Kong came back to me. This feeling was wonderful and profound. My current mood can be said to be filled with mixed emotions, a mixture of anticipation and excitement. I believe that when I meet fans at the performance venue, those feelings will be transformed into new and beautiful memories.

"Vogue Man" Hong Kong: In your own memory and feelings, what kind of place is Hong Kong?

Jun Hyung: My feeling about Hong Kong has not changed much. The hotel I stayed in the last time I was in Hong Kong was the one I'm staying in now, which I find amazing. Hong Kong is a very close place to me. Every time I visit, the fans are very enthusiastic towards me and make me feel very warm.

"Vogue Man" Hong Kong: What is your impression of Hong Kong music (or Cantonese songs)?

Jun Hyung: My understanding of Hong Kong music mainly comes from Hong Kong movies. I recently stumbled upon the restored version of "Chungking Express" and I absolutely loved the soundtrack and scenes in the movie. Especially the soundtrack of the movie "Dream Man", I personally like it very much. It also gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hong Kong music.

Novel Information

When we last left our heroine slash Jessica Jung’s fictional alter-ego Rachel Kim, she was about to enter a new stage literally and metaphorically. Hand-picked to debut as a member of DB Entertainment’s girl group Girls Forever, in the final pages of Jessica’s first novel Shine (2020), she steps on stage for her debut performance.

Fast-forward five and a half years. In Jessica’s second novel Bright (2022), Girls Forever are now the number one k-pop girl group in the world, and Rachel’s star is on the rise —much to the dismay of her fellow group members. In between jet-setting around the world, launching her fashion line, Girls Forever activities, and a new boyfriend, Rachel spends the rest of the book struggling to navigate her fellow members’ jealousy and resentment. In the end, her efforts prove in vain; DB Entertainment and the other members force her from the group. The book then ends much as Shine did with Rachel again stepping on a stage, only this time it is for herself, as a soloist (and fashion designer).

It is no coincidence that the plot of these books sounds like Jessica’s career trajectory, down to being unceremoniously booted from her own group. By her admission, she wove her own experiences into Rachel’s story—a point emphasized by her publisher, Simon & Schuster. Capitalizing on an interest in what the k-pop industry is really like, the pink and purple banner on the book's Amazon page bills it as a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the industry from someone who has lived it:

There is more to the sparkling world of K-pop than hit songs and eye-catching choreography. No one can give a more intimate look into what it takes to be an idol than K-pop legend Jessica Jung.

Contrary to this framing, these books are neither celebrity tell-alls nor, as I noted in my post on Shine, an exposé in the journalistic sense. They are fiction, with embedded elements of truth, although Jessica has never confirmed which elements. Instead, according to Jessica in an oft-cited 2020 interview with TIME, determining that is the job of fans who are encouraged to “look for Easter eggs” and separate fact from fiction. No surprise then that fans have stripped her books for parts. Disregarding Rachel’s overall story, attention has been paid mostly to the “Easter eggs,” their proximity to truth put up for debate.

Deciphering what is fact is not always a simple or even possible task. To illustrate what I mean, consider the N&G lawsuit that Rachel introduces via an internal monologue early in Bright:

What happened with N&G was major. Last year, they sued DB over the thirteen-year contracts that they were forced to sign. That we were all forced to sign. Shockingly, the boys actually won their case against the company, and as a result, all of DB's artists got to re-sign new, shorter deals. Now we're only on the hook for seven years at a time. Though, with the "optional" three-year extension we're also required to agree to up-front, it still ends up being a ten-year commitment. When year seven comes along, DB will put out a simple press release and make it look like we've all just decided to remain a happy family for three more years — when in reality, that "decision" had been made long ago, when we were trainees and had no say in the matter. Even so, what N&G were able to achieve was huge. I mindlessly stir milk into my cocoa as I think about how much we all owe to Namil and Gangmin.1

The “source” material for the N&G lawsuit is obviously the k-pop industry’s most infamous lawsuit, which is JYJ v. SM Entertainment. Like N&G, in July 2009, three of the five members of TVXQ filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment seeking to nullify their 13-year contract alleging, among other accusations of mistreatment, that the length was unfair. Similarly, at the same time as the JYJ lawsuit, the FTC introduced their standard contract for singers that limited their contract term to seven years, with some exceptions. And much as the N&G lawsuit was in the fictional universe of Bright, the JYJ lawsuit was a net positive for the overall industry, as the FTC would further modify contracts to be fairer to idols.

Things get complicated when it comes to the part about labels forcing idols to sign a three-year extension while simultaneously signing their initial seven-year contract. While it tracks that agencies would demand this from idols at the point in their career when they have the least power, that is when they have just beat out multiple other trainees for the chance to debut, I am still skeptical. Over the years, multiple idols have filed lawsuits against their labels seeking to nullify their contract, and yet none have ever alleged the sort of fraud that Rachel speaks of as if it is a widespread practice. Similarly, neither ex-idols nor ex-trainees who have spoken candidly and openly about their experiences have mentioned this as part of their experience. Even in the case of JYJ v. SM Entertainment, where the terms of their contract became public and were dissected by both sides, nothing of this sort came up.

None of this means that Jessica is making it up when writes that agencies force idols to sign what amount to ten-year contracts. As with much of what Jessica describes about the industry and inter-group dynamics, it is impossible to prove that it is or is not since the implication that this is behind-the-scenes information, means it is new and unverifiable by outsiders. And since she is a novelist, not a journalist, Jessica is under no obligation to address whether this information is factual.

This all bespeaks to the problem at the heart of this marketing approach. It is not that Jessica wrote a book entwining her own experience with that of her fictional counterpart but that there are limited ways to market such a book. Capitalizing on the opaqueness of the industry, every interview or YouTube video with or from an ex-idol or ex-trainee generally frames their experiences as “revealing the truth” or “showing what it is really like.”

Applying this same framing to Rachel's story misrepresents it. These books are not exclusively an accounting of the industry's sins and how it treats idols as disposable. They also tell Rachel's origin story, charting her development from trainee to girl group member to fashion designer and entrepreneur and finally solo artist as she successfully overcame multiple obstacles. Now, if only a story like that could sell books.

I'm assuming the narrative goes: he was obsessed with her, her not so much, they start dating, she's not super into him but doesn't care enough to commit to ending it and eventually he realises that but he can't bring himself to break up, ie this song). but the lyrics are just so far from dream that it's kinda throwing me for a loop

Because I am interested in this story line it has all the things, magical puppet, dinosaur comet, genie betrayal, a demon possessed puppet hologram. And I should have known they were paying homage to H.O.T. I saw the reels I was like hmm their using H.O.T's song for the challenge interesting wonder why? and didn't put two and two together till I saw Renjun do the floor move in the music video. I was like this song sounds familiar then I saw Renjun do it and felt so stupid the signs were there. The Renjun doing the move, then the rap verse and the chorus. But then the record scratched and I was like this is just a NCT remix. I went through a lot of stages. But yeah it's cute but feels very disconnected? From dream. Like something was just off. If you feel triggered by something, just skip this fiction completely. I'm not your mom, I'm not listing whatever minor issues this story could trigger in you. Life is harsh.

Grace’s fingers run swiftly across the keyboard typing quickly. It’s the fifth e-mail to the agency of their most generous donor. They haven’t replied to the four previous emails and the day of the charity meeting is close. She needs to contact the man to discuss details. The organisation she works for wants to give him an award for long term and undying support he has shown. Grace never met that person before. His name is familiar to her as she is handling the accounting in the organisation and Jung Yunho is one of the biggest donors. It’s her responsibility to fetch his agency and to talk through the award ceremony. However it seems impossible. Nobody is replying to her.

“Did you get a response from the agency?” Moira comes to Grace and scans the screen quickly. “Apparently not.” She sighs. “Look, I have a friend who’s got a friend with a friend who got this phone number.” Moira gives Grace a bright pink sticky note with a phone number scribbled on it. “It should be a number for a personal assistant of Yunho Jung. Call them directly and try to finally sort this out, please. If anything I will be wrestling with those awful suppliers. I swear I have such an urge to give them a high five… in their face… with a chair.” Moira mutters a few swears and briskly walks away leaving Grace slightly stunned and with a sticky note.

Grace blinks quickly and looks at the number. She really prefers written communication. However, at this point it is needed for her to overcome shyness and call some assistant. Grace grabs her phone and dials the number from the sticky note. She prepares an official greeting in her head. The phone rings twice and then…

“Hello! It’s Jung Yunho.”

Grace nearly drops the phone and the words get stuck in her throat for a moment. She can feel her ears burning red and cheeks blushing from embarrassment. “H-h-hello! I’m calling on behalf of the Helping Hand organisation you donated to in the past.”

“Yes, I remember. I truly appreciate your hard work. It’s my pleasure to contribute and give my tiny bit to a good cause. How can I help you, miss…?”

“Oh! T-t-the thing is we want to reward you for the long term support. Haven’t you received any of the e-mails we’ve sent?”

“I’m sorry, I haven’t received any emails from you. Where did you send them?”

“To your agency.”

“Ahh! Yes, I see now. I humbly apologise for this and I will make sure to talk to my people about this but to speed things up, could you tell me in short what do you need me to do? You mentioned some awards, is that right?”

“Y-y-yes! That is correct. There is a charity award ceremony taking place in 5 days and we would like you to be there and receive an award for 10 years of steady contribution. I tried to reach your agency but…”

“Nobody replied. It’s a bit of a last moment but I’m sure I can manage it. Are you calling from a cell phone?”

“Yes, sir…”

“Perfect! I will send you my personal email address and you can send me all the instructions. If you tell me when and where I should be standing I promise to be there, is that okay with you?”

“Y-y-yes that sounds very sensible.”

Yunho laughs shortly at the other end. “Well I’m glad you agree. Can I reach you through this number if I have any inquiries or should I call somebody else?”

“You can c-c-contact me via this number if you have questions.”

“Excellent! Is that all or…?”

“That's all, sir. I will send you the instructions right away.”

“Can’t wait for that, miss… I’m sorry I didn’t catch your name.”

“Oh! I apologize! I think I haven’t told you!” Grace makes a pause.

“Yes…? And what is your name?” Yunho asks and even when she can’t see him, she can hear he’s smiling.

“My name is Grace. Grace Arran.”

“Beautiful name, Amazing Grace. I will remember that.”

“Hmm… yes. Thank you.”

“Shall we end the call now or do you want to chat a bit more?”

“Eh…I… I-I-I…”

“Aww! Calm down. I’m just teasing you! I will send you my e-mail address, okay. Have a good day, Amazing Grace.”

“Good day to you, sir!”

Grace hangs up the phone with her ears and cheeks burning. She exhales deeply, still a bit shocked. She was expecting to talk to some personal assistant but Jung Yunho picked the phone instead and… and she stuttered like an idiot. Grace is all flushed with embarrassment. She was never good at talking to people. She tries to avoid personal contact with them. Grace is kind and generous at heart but she is too shy and anxious around people. She does work for charities her entire life but always backstage – she’s managing accounting, bills, paperwork, studying law and implementing it into internal regulations, handling applications to get the governmental donations and such. She does a lot for less fortunate people but never in the front line, never in the spotlight. Ever since childhood, Grace can’t manage to handle attention. She always feels anxious and worries that she might make some terrible mistake.

Grace’s phone beeps and she receives a text message with Yunho’s personal email address. She resends the informative email to him immediately and spends the next hour all shaken from expecting he might actually call to clarify something. Luckily enough for her he doesn’t call.

Yunho reads through the e-mail with instructions and it seems pretty clear to him.

“Who was it?” Changmin asks as he’s snacking on some chocolate bar. “Who were we talking to on the phone?”

“It was Grace from the Helping Hands organisation. They want to reward me for 10 years of donations.”

“I see, I see… Is she pretty?” Asks Changmin.

Yunho sighs. “First of all, I have never met her, I only spoke to her on the phone. And the other thing is that you are taken, aren’t you?”

“I know, I know. I wasn’t asking because of me of course. I have a lovely girlfriend.”

“Yes, you do. And when we are talking about your girlfriend, when you told me you are dating her I somehow expected you to stop coming to my apartment all the time and maybe spend more time with her for a change.”

“Aww! My dear friend, I would never neglect you just because of a woman.”

“Really? Can’t you neglect me a tiny bit, please? I think it’s not entirely okay for you to come here so often.”

“What exactly isn’t okay? Give me an example.”

“Well… It’s 10 in the evening and you came into my apartment, opened the door with a key I didn’t give to you and got here into my bedroom and right now you are lying next to me in my bed and scattering chocolate around.”

“And you think that’s odd?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm… I must admit that my girlfriend expressed similar worries to me the other day.”

“I think you should listen to her.”

“Maybe I should… Okay! I’m off then! Maybe you should find yourself a girlfriend, too. She would tell you important things, you know.”

“I will certainly look around at the charity award ceremony. Goodnight, Changmin.”

“Goodnight, Yunho!” Changmin leaves and Yunho hears him closing the apartment door.

“I will have the locks changed first thing in the morning.” Yunho mutters for himself and gets up to get rid of the chocolate crumbs Changmin left behind.

It’s the D-day for Grace. The charity event is about to start and Grace is basically shaken from head to toe. She spent the day coordinating and decorating and checking for everything being as perfect as possible. Many generous celebrities and publicly known people are going to come tonight and it’s important that they enjoy their time because if they do, it’s more likely they will continue with donations next year. Grace is wearing white long sleeved blouse and long black skirt. She isn’t going to show up among the celebrities, she will stay in the back stage keeping an eye on things as usual.

“It looks very nice.”

Grace turns around and smiles as she sees a woman wearing black and baby blue dress covering her from neck to toes completely. “Freya! You came!”

“I managed to squeeze this into my schedule. I would like to raise awareness about our hospital in Somalia. Are there going to be many rich wanna-bes?”

Grace and Freya are sisters. Freya is a surgeon and currently practising her job in Africa with the Red Cross. They have a lot in common with Grace – they both dedicated their lives to help other people. Unlike Grace, Freya doesn’t mind appearing in the spotlight to help. She is actively searching for donors to sponsor hospitals and schools in Africa and she is in direct contact with people she is helping to. Grace prefers to stay backstage but Freya boldly stands in the front line. On the other hand, Freya got a bit bitter and pessimistic over the years.

Grace nods. “We are going to reward some of our most generous donors tonight. You are going to hand down one of the awards.”

“You are right, of course.”

“Are you staying for a few days or…?”

“No, I have a seat on the first flight in the morning. I’m going back to Somalia.”

“I understand. Is it bad there? I mean… Are you taking care of yourself?”

Freya grins bitterly. “My own welfare isn’t important.”

“It is for me!” Assures her Grace.

Freya looks into sister’s eyes. She’s got the most beautiful baby blue eyes. “I know, Grace. And I appreciate it but… You know why I can’t.” Freya sighs and looks around. “The place looks really amazing, Grace. You did a great job. I will stop by to say goodbye later. Enjoy the evening.”

“You too, have fun, Freya.”

Yunho arrives on time and gives a few flash smiles to present photographers, answers some questions to the journalists and enters the hotel where the ceremony is taking place. He enters a large hall nicely decorated and with a lot of people he has seen in magazines and news. Yunho suddenly spots a familiar face in the crowd and makes his way to greet a friend.

“Park Jung Soo! I wouldn’t expect you here!” Yunho calls and pats friend’s shoulder.

Jung Soo turns and smiles. “Yunho! What are you doing here? Are you also a donor?”

“For 10 years already, I’m receiving an award tonight.” Yunho says.

“That’s amazing! Well done, mate. Are you here alone?”

“Yes, I’m afraid I don’t have my + 1 tonight.”

“Same here.” Sighs Jung Soo. “Are we that old and ugly that we can’t get a date for one night?”

“Or maybe we know our mind and can’t be satisfied easily. Our expectations are too high I guess.”

“Yes, you might be right. I should lower mine or I will die alone.”

“Aww! Don’t be gloomy on this day. Look around here. So many good hearted people came here. You can meet somebody tonight.”

“Oh! Is that why you came alone? Are you on a hunt?”

Yunho laughs shortly. “I wouldn’t say hunt. I hope to meet someone here. I hope she comes.”

“Man! Who is this lady? Tell me more!”

“I don’t actually know her. We never met, only spoke on the phone once but there’s something about her voice… I don’t know. It’s difficult to explain.”

“I see… Well, if you allow me I advise you to not put high hopes into this. It’s possible she’s 100 years old and only happens to have a nice voice.”

Yunho smiles. “I hope you are wrong in this but I will keep your advice in mind.”

“Now! How are you going to find her when you don’t know how she looks?”

“She works for the charity, she should be one of the organisers.”

“In that case we should…” Suddenly Jung Soo stops in the middle of the sentence and stares silent and with a gaping mouth somewhere behind Yunho.

Yunho turns to follow Jung Soo’s view and sees a slender woman wrapped in silken black and baby blue robe, long sleeves rimmed with black lace and a collar. Her dark brown hair is fixed in a loose bun and decorated with diamond pins. The colour of her eyes matches the baby blue dress. The woman is talking to a bunch of old men and holding a champagne glass gently.

“Who is it?” Yunho asks, assuming Jung Soo recognizes the woman.

“I have no idea but…” His words disappear again.

Yunho raises his eyebrows amused. “You better close your mouth. It doesn’t look good when you stare at a strange woman drooling like a dog.”

Jung Soo comes back to his senses, smiles with a cute dimple and blushes a bit. “I know. I’m sorry. I just…”

“Go to her then!” Encourages Yunho. “Go and introduce yourself to her.”

Jung Soo shakes his head. “No way! I couldn’t possibly. What would I say?”

“What about something like: Hello, my name is Park Jung Soo and I can’t take my eyes off you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous! You can’t come to a strange woman and say something like that!” Jung Soo blushes and he secretly peeks to see the blue-eyed lady again. She bows her head slightly to the men and leaves them.

“Now! She’s alone. Go to her and talk to her!”

“I can’t…”

“Why not? What’s the worst thing that could happen? She will tell you to clear off. She won’t bite your head off.”

“Maybe but I just don’t feel courageous enough.”

“Must be the low level of alcohol. Let’s go to the bar and see if Jack Daniels can make you braver.”

“I don’t drink whiskey, Yunho.”

“Man, you always have something, don’t you?” Yunho sighs and they both laugh.

Yunho tries to encourage Jung Soo to go and talk to the woman who caught his eyes but Jung Soo can’t find the guts to do it. Not tonight. Eventually Yunho gives up on this and focuses on finding Amazing Grace. He asks the bartender about the organisers of the event but the man is painfully uninformed. The evening passes quickly and it’s time for Yunho to walk up the stage and receive an award for his long-term support of the organisation. He can’t avoid a mischievous grin when he sees that the one person going to hand him the prize is Jung Soo’s femme fatale. From her speech he recollects she is a doctor Freya Arran who practises surgery in Africa. What a coincidence, Yunho thinks when he remembers that Grace introduced herself as Grace Arran. Maybe they are related? Yunho walks up on the stage and steps to Freya Arran. She hands him the prize and Yunho approaches the mic to give a prepared speech. When he’s finished and the hall is sounding with applause, he comes closer to Freya.

“I’m sorry to bother you, miss Arran but can I have a question?”

“Of course. How can I help you?”

“I talked with a woman called Grace Arran on the phone the other day to talk through this evening and I was wondering whether it could be your relative by any chance?”

“Grace is my sister.”

“I see. Is she here tonight?”

“Yes, she’s supervising the event from backstage.”

“Do you think I could meet her? She was very helpful and I feel like it’s only appropriate to thank her when I’m here.”

“It’s very kind of you. Please, follow me.”

Freya takes the lead and Yunho follows her behind the curtains. Freya heads to a professional looking woman in her late 20’s with ashy blonde wavy hair, pale face and very light blue eyes.

“Grace! Let me introduce you to Yunho Jung. Mr. Jung, this is my sister Grace Arran.”

“Pleasure to meet you, miss Arran.” Yunho steps closer and he notices how terrified Grace looks. Her face gets flushed in red and she stops breathing for a moment.

“Yunho said you were a great help and wanted to thank you in person.” Explains Freya.

“Y-y-yes. It was m-m-my p-p-pleasure, sir.” Grace stutters and dodges her eyes shyly.

Yunho is strangely moved by this creature. He wouldn’t call her a beauty in the common sense of the word but there is something about her fragile charm that’s making his heart flutter. And then the voice. Soft, quiet and comforting. It’s a paradox that Yunho finds her stutter cute because it allows him to listen to her for a bit longer. It truly hurts him to see he’s genuinely making her nervous.

“Please, don’t be afraid of me, miss Grace. I only wanted to express my gratitude to you.” Yunho bows deeply. “Thank you, Amazing Grace!”

“I did nothing s-s-special…” Grace whispers and she bows to him, too.

“On this we disagree.” Yunho catches her eyes into his glance and smiles at her watching another wave of red blush rising into her cheeks. She gulps and he can see her chest quickly rising and sinking as she is breathing nervously. He realizes how hard this situation is for and decides not to torture her any longer. “I will never forget about this, miss Grace. Enjoy the rest of the evening. Goodbye!” Yunho bows a bit again and goes back to the hall.

Grace waits silent till she’s sure he won’t hear her and then moans painfully. “Why did you do this?!” She calls.

Freya sighs. “Do what? Grace really! He was a perfect gentleman. What’s your problem?”

“You know what.”

“Yes and I already told you to go to therapy with this. Such a level of shyness isn’t normal.”

“Look who’s speaking! Like if I was the only one needing therapy.”

“I never said that. Honestly, with the way we were raised I’m genuinely surprised none of us ended up in sanatorium.”

“Not yet.” Mentions Grace bitterly.

Yunho is sitting in his favourite Cafe with a phone on the table, staring at the screen with a phone number. His finger is hesitantly circling above the call button. He’s been doing this for at least an hour now. Yunho tries to come up with an excuse to call Grace but all his mind can come up with is his desire to see her again. Yunho sighs and grabs the phone. It’s time to do this! He is going to call her now!

Yunho is about to press the call but suddenly his phone starts ringing. He nearly falls off the chair. It’s Grace calling! He presses receive. “Hello!”

“Good d-d-day, sir! It’s Grace Arran. I’m terribly sorry to bother you…”

“It’s no bother at all, Grace. How can I help you?”

“Actually, the thing is we have something that’s yours, I believe.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Oh! I should explain. We were cleaning after the charity event and we found a platinum tie pin with a tiny diamond. I went through the pictures taken at the ceremony and it looks like the tie pin you were wearing that night. Are you missing it, sir?”

Yunho remembers clipping the pin to his tie but he can’t recollect whether he had it when he came back home. He had a lot to think about and didn’t notice. “I’m not sure, Grace but I will check and call you back, okay? It’s likely the tie pin is mine but I better check first.”

“Of course! There is no rush. It will stay safe till we give it back to the owner.”

“I will call you back in an hour, I’m not home at the moment. Is it okay with you?”

“Perfectly okay, sir.”

They say goodbye and Yunho pays for the coffee and hurries home. It turns out he truly lost his tie pin. He calls Grace and despite the fact it makes her stutter a lot, she agrees to meet Yunho in a Cafe the next day to give him the tie pin back.

Yunho arrives early to the Cafe to wait for Grace there. He sits by the window to have a good view. And he sees her coming. Last time the light in the backstage wasn’t good and Yunho took the chance to check Grace out in the daylight. His first impression was mostly right, though. Today she’s wearing plain black trousers, a light beige shirt and white cardigan. If he wasn’t waiting for her, he could easily miss her on the street, she looks utterly plain, nearly invisible. Banks are falling into her face which is pale but slightly freckled in the sunlight.

Grace enters the Cafe and looks around. She spots Yunho smiling and waving at her from one of the tables. The Cafe isn’t too crowded but there are enough people for comfort. Grace has a simple plan – she gives the tie pin back to Yunho and leaves right afterwards. She internally sighs seeing his smile. Grace is shy in general but good looking men are scaring her out of her wits. Luckily for her, they usually don’t pay any attention to her. Grace steps to Yunho who stands up to greet her.

“I’m not going to steal too much of your time, Mr. Jung. I have the tie pin here…” Grace begins.

“Please, take a seat, miss Grace. Have at least one cup of coffee with me.” Yunho smiles. “I have no pressing issues at the moment.”

Grace is stunned for a moment. Yunho is standing by the chair and holding it for her. It would be rude to throw the pin at him and run away but it’s exactly what Grace would love to do at the moment.

“Please, Grace. I don’t bite.” Yunho speaks in a low calming voice which makes Grace’s heart skip a few beats.

She obeys and sits on the chair. Yunho walks around and sits down. “Thank you for coming to meet me, Miss Grace. I appreciate it.”

“I brought y-y-your tie pin w-w-with me.” Grace stutters and starts roaming in her large practical shoulder bag. She would do anything to avoid eye contact with him. Why is this man making her so completely impossible and nervous?

“It’s very kind of you.” Yunho smiles and calls the waiter with a gesture of his hand. “One latte for me and… What are you having, Miss Grace?”

“Earl Grey tea, please.” Grace finally grasps a plastic zip bag with a tie pin in it and pulls it out of the bag.

“One latte and one earl grey.” Yunho tells the waiter.

Grace pushes the plastic bag across the table and quickly dodges the hand away as Yunho reaches it. “It must have fallen off your tie when you were backstage. We found it there.” Informs him Grace.

“Yes, it’s likely. Thank you.” Yunho finds her eyes and imprisons them in his stare for a moment. A crimson blush covers Grace’s face making the freckles stand out more visibly. Like golden dust. “Tell me something about you.”

Grace seems pretty shocked by the question. “Ahm… Well… There’s n-n-nothing i-i-interesting about m-m-me.” Grace looks down on the table.

“It seems like there is one more thing we can’t agree on.” Yunho mentions. “How long do you work for Helping Hands?”

“It’s g-g-going to b-b-be eight y-y-years, sir.”

Yunho is watching her trembling with nervousness and wants to just jump to her, take her in his arms and hold her long enough for her to stop shivering like a frightened little bird. However she would probably faint if he touched her now and so he decides to continue with the interview. He asks her about her job, what she likes and dislikes and he notices that the frequency of her stutter is getting lower while the amount of eye contact is rising as the time passes by. He’s pleased to see she feels less nervous after a while. Yunho doesn’t attempt to touch her, not once while they are in the Cafe. However when they are about to part…

Yunho smiles and instinctively takes Grace by her hand to hold it with both hands while saying goodbye to her. And he immediately sees it was a bad idea. Grace freezes for a second, her face gets flushed with red blush and she presses lips together.

In the next second she rips her hand out of his grasp. “I’m sorry! Bye!” She whispers out of breath and literally runs away.

“Wait, Grace!” Yunho tries to call her but she quickly disappears. He slaps himself mentally for such a dumb mistake. He messed this up. Normally he would laugh it off. However with Grace he can’t let her go. This afternoon he felt genuinely happy and it’s Grace to be blamed for it. The more he got to know about her, the more he was falling for her and now he feels like it would be a terrible mistake to stop here. The trouble is she won’t agree to meet him again now. He has to show some invention and creativity now.

Three days had already passed since Grace met Yunho at the Cafe and she still can’t shake it off. Whenever she remembers him, she’s all blushing again. And she must admit she thinks about him disturbingly a lot. However she knows she acted foolishly and he probably considers her a crazy person after what she did. They will never meet again. Grace has to accept the reality – she wasn’t born to impress handsome men… or any men. The true tragedy is that Grace always secretly wanted a family, few children she could love unconditionally and care for them. The only trouble is she is completely awkward around men, she’s nervous and anxious and impossible. Her destiny is to stay backstage and leave the spotlight for prettier and more self-confident women.

“You’ve got mail.” Moire calls from across the room and heads to Grace.

“E-mail?”

“No, it’s a real letter, my dear. Like e-mail but on paper.” Moira laughs and throws a thick envelope on Grace’s desk.

Grace takes it in hand and examines it. It’s a beautiful sea foam colour envelope with flowery emboss décor. Her name and an address of the Helping Hands head office is written in clean handwriting. “Who could send this to me?” Asks Grace.

“It’s a mystery but I bet you can crack it when you open the envelope and read the letter.” Smirks Moira amused. “Let me know when you find out. I have more meetings.” She leaves the office.

Grace turns the envelope in her hands. It’s emitting a light scent. It reminds her of freshly washed linen. Grace takes a letter opener and cuts the envelope clean. She pulls out three sheets of paper nicely folded to fit the envelope. She straightens them on her desk. The papers are covered in the same clean and lively handwriting. She starts reading but before she reaches the end she has to make a few breaks to dry the tears streaming down her face. Finally her eyes arrive to the end and she reads loud:
