How do you think the High School Musical series/Troyella's relationship would have gone if Ms Darbus had not given Troy and Gabriella a callback?

... Good god, Anon, it has been over ten years since I watched that movie and I didn't like it at the time.

It always struck me as sanitized, knock-off, toned-down Grease.

But alright, we'll go off what I very vaguely remember.

I think ultimately the relationship wouldn't have taken off.

The thing about the musical was it brought a whole bunch of shit to the surface for both of them where they both immediately had to take a stand against their friends and what were supposed to be their main interests.

Had it not been for the musical, then Troy would have continued basketball and could have kept his singing thing on the sly, Gabriella could hang out with Troy every once in a while but would quickly be warned away against seeing him too often in public because of the status quo and "Wouldn't want to ruin your social life gurl" and Sharpay and her brother can have their... very weird dynamic and get the musical for themselves.

They'd likely remain friends but it'd be harder and harder to hang out as they have to do so pretty much on the sly as neither is invited to the other's friend group.

Nothing would ultimately push them together the way the musical would have.

I just love seeing Ricky being his goofy, silly self, especially surrounding the musicals they were going to/are doing. I like to think that the HSM franchise have become his comfort movies, and that he listens to the soundtrack on a daily basis. As well as after stressful situations to help him feel a bit better. Which is technically canon imo, because in the first season he does just that in episode 4. (Does anyone else headcanon Ricky as some form of neurodivergent? It just makes sense to me)

I’m going absolutely bonkers thinking about rina dating s4, so here’s a bunch of headcanons (for s4 and s5 if we get it) requested by absolutely no one but my own brainrot:

They’ve been secretly dating because of the documentary

On the first day of school, when gina comes to Ricky’s house, instead of being surprised to see her there, we hear ricky yell “dad, Gina’s here!” Then he opens the door and goes “hey you” as Gina wraps her arms around his waist and Ricky grabs her face before they give each other 3-4 happy mini kisses

They’re in Ricky’s room, Ricky is sitting in a chair scrolling on his phone and gina is plucking away at his guitar sitting on his bed. She goes “how do you do this? It’s so much harder than it seems” and he sits next to her and wraps his arms around her, using his hands to guide her fingers to play

We see their backs as they’re walking home, fingers laced, ricky has his skateboard in his empty hand and gina is dangling ballet flats in hers

On a different walk, gina is standing on Ricky’s skateboard and holds onto his shoulders as he holds her waist and guides her down a sidewalk. They’re just giggling as gina kinda wobbles and ricky goes, “steady… steady…. There you go”

We spend a whole episode watching plot B be gina and ricky running from the camera crew at the school. We see them coming up with different funny places to hide together

We get at least one scene of gina talking to mr bowen and ricky talking to ms porter where they tell each other’s parents that they were the “mom/dad they never had”

Red’s car breaks down (like troy’s truck), so ricky gets out and pushes while gina drives. They laugh hysterically the whole time

Maybe the car could break down after they have a day where nothing goes right (like things keep going terribly wrong), but the irony of it and being together while it happens makes it actually funny and enjoyable. The car breaking down would have been “the last straw”, but instead it just sends them into a giggle-fit

(This is outside s4/s5 but I‘ll give it anyway) Ricky gets gina chocolates every Valentine’s Day as a “mystery person” but by now she’s figured out it’s him. She plays along anyway because she knows it makes him happy to do that for her

Gina and carlos are debating about the choreography and gina asks ricky who he thinks is right. She then gives him a “look”. Ricky says “gina, obviously”. Carlos, half-jokingly/half-offended goes, “she changed you” and ricky gets a giddy smile as he looks at gina and he says, “I know”. This makes gina smile and blush as she shakes her head and walks away

Gina’s Lock Screen is both of them and Ricky’s is just gina

Them just hanging out in the kitchen after school, ricking leaning against a kitchen counter that gina is sitting on, sharing a snack

There’s a scene where we see Ricky talking to someone, Gina’s headphones around his neck

Gina comes over to red’s house and defeats both ricky and him in a video game

Ricky and gina drive to the same lookout point ricky was at 3x1 and sit on top of reds car, watching the sun set and looking at the night city lights, eventually sharing a kiss

Ricky and gina go to a pet shelter one day and play with a puppy outside, chasing it around and laying on their bellies in the grass with it

Gina gets sick with the flu so once she’s not contagious but still has to stay at home, ricky brings her soup every day after school and reads her favorite chapter book to her until she falls asleep

On thanksgiving, ricky comes to Gina’s house and she teaches him how to make her gf turkey cupcakes. But they get in a little flour war in the process and we get a recreation of the troyella paint “just wanna be with you” scene in hsm3 where ricky puts his hands around Gina’s arms and waist to stop her and she just giggles with flour on her nose (and flour on Ricky’s neck like the paint on troy’s)

Ricky and gina being big and little spoon watching hsm under a cozy blanket

The whole acting gang is hanging out at Ashlyn’s house for a party. Gina is sitting on the floor and ricky is sitting behind her, hunched over, legs to either side of her with his arms around her chest while everyone talks. He asks her if she wants a soda and she says “root beer please” and he says “ok” as he squeezes his arms a little tighter around her, kisses the top of her head, and then gets gets a soda for both of them

They’re laying down outside, in an L shape watching the clouds.. except only gina is watching the clouds. Ricky is rolled to his side, watching her with one arm propping his head up, the other playing with a curl in her hair. He does this as he just smiles and listens intently to gina talking about her favorite things because she makes him so happy

Gina always acts super tough but she’s only told ricky she’s afraid of scary movies (because of WITW). So while they watch, they’re both sitting on the floor under a blanket, ginas knees tucked close to her and ricky’s arms wrapped around gina to “protect her”

We can see the hsmtmts cameras watching ricky secretly through a coffee shop window. We see him get two drinks, walk outside and check both ways, say something (we can’t make it out though) and then gina runs around the corner to meet him. Cut away we see a ricky confessional where he goes, “dating? What makes you think that?” Then it cuts back to the same scene where we see gina give Ricky a little kiss before he hands her a drink, with a voiceover confessional of gina saying, “no, we’re definitely not dating”.

Carlos helps Ricky write gina a song for her birthday as a thank you gift for ricky helping him write one for seb s2

Instead of gina just “disappearing” when she leaves for a vacation, she stays in contact with ricky. However, because she has no cell service she writes him a letter every night. I’m the meantime, Ricky is leaving her a voicemail every night for her to listen to on the way back to slc

While this is probably just canon at this point, I’ll still leave it in since it isn’t “confirmed” technically: but I think we’ll get a rina cihtd on the school’s rooftop

Ricky asks gina to homecoming with a shirt that says “hoco?” and a bouquet of flowers. We get another coat check scene but this time he helps her put on her coat before they go home. At the end of the night ricky kisses Gina’s cheek goodnight after he walks her to the door. We get another “good night ricky” from gina

I put this in my “Christmas eve” fic but it’s my hc that ricky shows up to Gina’s house in her hat on Christmas Eve. He gives her a terribly knitted scarf that he tried to learn how to make from a YouTube tutorial, but she loves it and wears it every day

Gina joins the dance team and is upset because of how Dani has been treating her (in this version Dani is a bully to gina and won’t back down). She tells ricky kind of the same speech she gave ej (3x03) about not feeling “good enough” for so long, which makes her nervous she will screw up their next dance performance. Ricky parallels his line (3x03) by telling her how proud he is of her and he wished the whole world knew that. Gina giggles because she is like, “we’ve been trying to keep it from the whole world”. Later in the episode we see ricky in the front row of the audience wearing a “Gina’s #1 fan” shirt. At the end of the performance gina runs down the stage to ricky and kisses him. Then ricky says “I don’t care if people know we’re dating. I want the world to know how incredible you are and how proud I am of you”. And gina just says “I don’t care either, ricky bowen” with a huge grin on her face and wet eyes. Then he gives her another spin hug.

I take you rina rain kiss and raise you rina snow kiss on New Year’s Eve with fireworks

Anons (these might have all been bday anon I can’t remember) gave me these ideas but I’m obsessed so: rina goes to an amusement park with the crew and ride a Ferris wheel together, rina go to a haunted house and gina is the one who has to lead ricky through, and while ricky is teaching gina to skate, he falls and gina puts a bandaid on him and kisses the injury better

Ricky and gina are walking home and there is a bunch of dirty snow so ricky gives gina a piggy back ride the rest of the way

Ricky lets gina braid his hair one night while they’re watching movies

Once the secret dating is over, jetney rina and seblos go on a triple date to a restaurant and we see see zac, Vanessa, corbin, Monique, Ashley and Lucas hanging out a table next to them

Zac and Vanessa give rina advice about what makes Troyella the “it” couple (keeping them together all this time) referring to HSM3 and 4. However, the advice simultaneously works for rina as well. “They always come back to each other, no matter what”.

Gina gets ricky and her promise rings for Ricky’s graduation that they both wear on their pinkies because they’re each other’s “pinky promise”

You mentioned on the ask about adopted Troy that you had some darker ideas - may I hear more about that?

omg so sorry I just saw this!! Life is very hectic for me at home lately (good things! but still hectic!) and I haven't been on here nearly as much!

Soooo... my usual or "primary" headcanon is that Troy's bio mom was only 14 when she had him. She had a really bad home life (drugs, possibly abuse, etc.) and was in a "relationship" with a man much older than her. The exact way she knows the man isn't always the same - it might be her or her family's drug dealer, it might be a corrupt pastor or teacher that most people around look up to. She was either "strongly encourage" (read: threatened) to give him up for adoption, or she wanted to give him a better life and placed him with his now-parents. She wasn't able to keep contact despite wanting to because of her family and the man that got her pregnant.

My other even darker (imo) idea, which is less fleshed out, is that Troy's bio dad is Coach Bolton's brother/Troy's uncle. Again, large age difference between him and Troy's bio mom (30yo bio dad and 14-16yo bio mom). Troy's bio dad/uncle is arrested. For whatever reason, she moved in with Coach and his wife (I never really had a good reason - perhaps she was one of his students, had a bad home life, and the courts placed her with them? Idk, I chalk it up to "fanfic magic"). Shortly after Troy was born, his bio mom killed herself, bio dad goes to jail for statutory rape (among possibly other things?), and Troy's parents formally adopt him. Never fleshed out much beyond that, but I always wanted to...

(I have an embarrassingly large number of fanfic ideas that deal with Troy's adoption. Usually with the former idea in which Troy and his bio mom reunite through various circumstances, but they're so niche that I doubt I'll ever get to them)

The pack having a movie night and watching the three hsm movies and it devolving into them breaking into the school to try performing Scream like in the movie.

headcanon that percy and annabeth are both equally infatuated with the HSM franchise: PJO version

• the obsession started after the sea of monsters when annabeth stayed over at percy's apartment and they argued over which movie to watch

• eventually, they decided on watching HSM together since neither of them had seen it and they ended up loving it

• at karaoke nights at camp half-blood, they often sang Troy/Gabriella duets (The Start of Something New, What I've Been Looking For, Breaking Free)

• admittedly, they sounded terrible, but singing is so much easier and less embarrassing when they do it together, so neither one of them cared

• the implications of their duet were completely lost on them, but it was one of the main reasons the camp ships them

• after The Titan's curse takes place, annabeth continues the tradition of staying over percy's apartment (also because they missed each other since she got kidnapped) and watched HSM 2 and they both fell even more in love with the franchise

• the morning of percy's fourteenth birthday, he and annabeth baked cookies in the kitchen while blasting 'Work This Out' so loud that the neighbors complained

• sally found the loud music annoying too at first but completely forgot about it when she watched percy and annabeth sing 'You Are the Music in Me' while throwing flour at each other, obviously falling for each other

• percy and annabeth completely shut down the idea of them dating when sally not-so-subtly teases them about it, but sally wasn't fooled

• throughout percy's and annabeth's eighth grade year, they frequently email each other (they know demigods and electronics are a bad idea but they don't care when it comes to each other) and constantly sign-off their emails with quotes or song lyrics to hilariously describe their current mood

• "dude, my brothers literally came into my room and spilled water all over my plans for the camp's next prom night. come fix it." - wisegirl12, how did we get from the top of the world to the bottom of the heap?

• "no." - seaweedbrain18, i gotta go my own way

• the year HSM 3 came out, percy and annabeth weren't on good terms and didn't speak to each other unless it was about preparing for the upcoming war

• still, they refused to watch HSM 3 without the other

• after the battle of the labyrinth (more importantly, after their kiss), percy iris messages annabeth and apologizes for how distant he's been and admits he been avoiding everyone and everything related to being a demigod because he's scared that he'll die before he'll graduate

• annabeth apologizes for being so rude to him and admits that's she's just scared she'll lose him and is shitty at expressing her emotions

• the two continue to talk about anything and everything and eventually get to the topic of HSM 3

• they admit to each other that they hadn't seen it since it came out, so they make a pact: if they both survive the war, annabeth has to come over and watch the movie with him

• later that week, percy secretly purchases the DVD for the movie and promises to not open it until then

• as we know, the two survive the war and finally get together on percy's birthday

• as sally comes to pick the two up from camp, they run to the car hand-in-hand and sally immediately figures it out and is so happy for them

• sally spends almost the entire car ride to the apartment enforcing the 'door open at all times rule', much to the couple's embarrassment

• later that night when annabeth stays over, she and percy cuddle on the couch and talk and then annabeth reminds him of the pact they made

• percy leaps out of his seat and grabs the DVD, much to annabeth's surprise, and the two cuddle and watch the movie together

• from that point forward, whenever they email each other, percy signs off his email as "seaweedbrain18, troy bolton"

• annabeth thinks it's incredibly corny, but signs off her emails as "wisegirl12, gabriella montez"

Dewey duck headcanons

● Dewey knows how to cook not gourmet level cooking bucomfortjng homecooked meals he learned from Donald

● in highschool dewey basically pulls a troy bolton and joins both the basketball team and the musical and glee club

● Dewey builds his own plane to fly

● During one of their adventures dewey gains a sword and just becomes something he brings along everywhere and becomes a fairly decent swordfighter

● Dewey got to keep the sandals of hermes from Storkules and fight with it during adventures

Joe Tazuna profile analysis

I like the idea of Joe loving basketball because it gives me the mental image of him loving High School musical and Troy Bolton being his hero and wanting to do theater and dance with Ryoko. Yes this is veering a lot into headcanon for what’s supposed to be an analysis but guess what? My post my rules. Also I wonder if Joe has any pets seeing how he loves dogs so much. I know we hate the manga and using it as a reference should be considered sacrilege but in it, the students of Sonobeno remark that Joe is poor, and if that’s the case he might not be able to afford a dog. I wonder if maybe he had a dog before Mr Policeman died, and they had to let it go because finances were tight. Again, headcanon territory.

And his dislikes also point to a strong sense of justice, again pointing towards Mr Policeman being his dad, a man who left his position to pursue what was right. Joe also hates evil, and people who do wrong, but he has been taught not to have a black and white view. It’s interesting how that comes into play when he gets the sacrifice card. He is deceiving others and leading them on the nose to grave, but he’s trying to save himself and his best friend and admits defeat gracefully and kindly.

It’s important to remember how when things get serious, Joe is the one who takes them the most seriously. Joe in chapter 1-2 spends a lot of time brooding, angry at what happened to Mishima, and on his own. He was very much coping with a tough situation as much as Sara was, and him extending his hand to Alice was a tremendous act. Joe distrusted people. He wanted to know the votes. It wasn’t just a sweet gesture from a good kid, it was someone opening up his heart and trying to be kind in the worst situation, and that’s what Joe is doing, being kind in the worst of times.

So there’s a pretty interesting analysis about this bit done by @beanieman that I can’t find at the moment but I want to bring up another piece of symbolism…

Lightning can strike in one place a singular time. In other words the sacrifice could have one result. And when you have that result you can’t take it back. So Joe, where will you direct the lightning?

Joe himself wearing dog ornaments reminds me of emotion route where he tells Sara “I’ll always follow you! You know, like a dog!” No matter what, he’s loyal to the people he loves first, and will stand by any decision they make. He will kill for Sara. He will die for Sara. He even follows her after his death. Very good symbolism.

I like this because Sara’s profile states that the dress code for Sonobeno is pretty lax. Either Joe is intentionally wearing his uniform in a way that’s rebellious, but not rebellious enough he can get in trouble, or he’s just so flamboyant and cool his style is bound to grind someone’s gears, and I can’t decide which I like more.

||. I don't think that Thor ever saw someone like Jane coming. And by that I mean: I don't think Thor would have ever considered himself someone lucky enough to be able to marry for love over politics, much less actually manage to fall in love, and for that to matter in the first place. I'd imagine the state of Thor's future went largely, relatively, unspoken amongst the family. A mutual understanding across all parties that, when it came to Thor, some things were just a given.

He was the crown heir, meaning by all legal rites, including Asgard's approval, the crown WILL fall to Thor once Odin dies, or the crown is passed on.

He will have to marry, and (based on Odin's nitpicking) preferably the royal line would stay within the Asgardian species or branch out minimally within the Vanir, their sister species.

He will have to have an heir of his own, regardless of the state of his marriage and/or whether or not he actually wants children. (Luckily this man has family engraved into everything about him so OF COURSE he wants his own kids.)

So with all of that said, to some degree I think Thor was a bit... flippant about the concept of marriages, wives, queens and heirs because he knows he's not going to get a lot of wiggle room when it comes to choice in that regard. Not that he hasn't got any, but the likelihood of him actually finding someone he likes, then becoming friends with them? Not to mention if he learns to trust and falls in love with them?

Well, that's probably not going to happen. And I think Thor accepted all of the above three points a long time ago, spoken or not. So while I don't think he went out of his way to seek out flings and one off relationships or one-night-stands, I do think he was the sort to dabble here and there whenever there was enough chemistry between himself and another to justify it to himself. Certainly when everyone's so focused on how pretty he is they're not going to bother to see past that anyways ... so why bother?)

Needless to say that the entire circumstances around Thor meeting Jane were of course, entirely unprecedented... but then Jane went above and beyond anything Thor could have possibly predicted. And even beyond that: beyond anything Thor would have EVER asked anyone to do or to be for him. She was kind when he was still neck-deep in his own bloated facade, she - in her own way, realizing it or not - supported him through a time he felt completely abandoned and lost... and though their first foray was only about three days minimum, she very quickly became someone that Thor feels safe with because she gave him something that he didn't have during his banishment: somewhere to belong.

And I think more than anything that's ultimately what Thor needs out of a partner. Someone who is nurturing enough to allow him to stay, and allow him to rest for a time whether he asks out loud for that rest or not. (And someone who's feisty enough to bop him on the head a little bit when he's being too stubborn to do exactly that.)

She's a bit of an anomaly to Thor. A brilliant, beautiful anomaly that Thor never expected. Nor do I think part of him ever fully believes he's been lucky enough to cross paths with her. Thor sees in Jane, not only future for himself but most importantly: a friend. A very dear, kind, and trusted friend who Thor feels completely at home with, in his own way. A kindred spirit, of sorts. Or in the way of High School Musical:

Yesss I love that HC! And totally. If you remember what happens to troyella, there was a lot of things that could split them apart: chad’s pressure, Gabriella in Stanford, Troy not knowing which school to go to and getting pitched for Juilliard, but they still made it work. Like I said, Rina is the couple that beats the odds. I think no matter what the ending of s5 looks like, we will get some sort of conclusion, time jump, SOMETHING, that shows us Rina will be together forever. And I mean that. They have seen each other at their worst and find each other at their best. That’s something that could stay and work their whole lives. They really are high school sweethearts ❤️

When I was responding to your last message I actually wrote a movie hc myself. I decided to take it out because my ask was just getting long winded, but I did want to share it on tumblr at some point. I feel like this ask is an appropriate place to share it.

My Rina the Movie Head Canon

Rina and Seblos have both split after graduations and went on their own paths. This movie would take place a couple years after to show how the couples find each other again. Gina and Carlos go to school together and Gina stopped talking to Ricky. Gina is actually struggling with school. Her teachers aren’t great, she isn’t doing as well as she thought she would, and her only friend is Carlos. She tells Carlos she just feels like she is “missing something”. Then one day after class Gina is walking around NYC (because she will obviously be there for school) and she sees Ricky. They talk and he tells her is in NYC for fun and going back soon to school (which she assumes is in SLC because he told everyone when he graduated he was going to community college there). She says goodbye, but she tells Carlos how hard that was to see him again because she still feels things for him. Carlos asks if she wants to get back together with him and she says he looks like he is having so much fun in college probably and he’s so far away, she wouldn’t want to interfere.

So, Carlos makes a secret plot and starts to talk to Seb again to get Ricky and Gina back in contact. <<During this time, Seb and Carlos fall in love again while plotting the Rina agenda.>> Since Seb is still at home on the farm, Carlos assumed he knew where Ricky was in SLC. But Seb can’t track Ricky down. So basically they try to get the whole squad together to “find Ricky” for Gina as a surprise. Miss Jenn isn’t dating Mike and Mike moved again so Ricky is literally nowhere to be found.

The climax is when Gina finds out they’ve been plotting because she sees Carlos on a zoom call in a cafe (in NYC) with everyone and gets upset at the squad for interfering. “Ricky probably doesn’t want me anyway”. She walks out and begins to walk home, when it’s pouring rain. She is crying. She sees Ricky AGAIN (this is probably several weeks later). She shouts through the rain, “what are you doing here?!” And he says “I’m here for fun, remember?” And she says, “but Salt Lake is so far away. That is so much money. And you keep showing up. You stopped showing up, Ricky. When we graduated, we stopped talking. You were the guy who was supposed to show up and stay and you didn’t.” And then Ricky says, “I didn’t show up?? I didn’t show up?? Gina, I’ve been here the whole time but you never saw me”. Pause. “What do you mean, Ricky? You’re in Salt Lake at school!” “I changed my mind. I came to New York because I knew it meant I could be near you. I knew it meant I could pursue acting to the fullest. But after I signed the lease to my apartment, I realized I told you to find yourself and be on your own. I started school here. Theater school. And you want to know what I love about the arts here? We are constantly asked to see other performances for school. I’ve seen every performance you’ve been in, Gina. I walked by your favorite coffee shop every morning on the way to class. I even saw you on the subway a few times. But I wasn’t going to go back on my word. I wanted you to be happy, whether or not I was there. But I always showed up.” Then Gina would walk up to him, grab him by the shirt and kiss him in the rain. It would be very rom-com and I love that for them. ❤️

Ok so like this whole thing stemmed from me thinking that zac efron looks nothing like his parents’ actors. And it became kind of a “what if” that’s turned into a complete headcanon. Like to the point where I just assume Troy is adopted in every fic I read, and I get really confused in the occasional fic where he is explicitly stated to be their biological child. That’s how ingrained it is in my head 😂

I don’t really have a super specific headcanon, though, sorry to say. I can imagine all different circumstances where he would have been adopted, and none of them is like *the* headcanon. (If this ask is in reference to the short fic I wrote where Troy was adopted by his dad/coach when he was old enough to remember, that’s actually the only time I’ve imagined that scenario. I’d like to explore it more, though.)

Usually I imagine that his bio mom was a really young teenager. Sometimes, she made the choice to place troy for adoption to give him a better life, other times she felt like she had to because her home life was terrible. Sometimes Troy’s boo dad is involved, other times he’s not. (I have some darker headcanons about this, but like, I don’t want to get super dark on what was supposed to be a lighthearted ask 😂)

Also I sometimes instead think he was coach bolton’s nephew, and his bio dad (coach’s brother) passed away, so they took Troy in for that reason.

As for why his parents adopted him, that changes depending on circumstances. I usually imagine that they couldn’t have children of their own, hence them looking towards adoption. (I also have a headcanon that they later figured out the reason for their infertility, and went on to give Troy three little sisters that are like ten years younger than him. He’s super close to them, though they do bicker a lot lmao)

idk if this was easy to follow or just confusing lmao. I didn’t want to get super into it, because I could probably write a whole essay about it, but no one wants to read that, so I cut out a lot of little things to keep it short. But I’m happy to ramble more, or hear your own headcanons (either about this or otherwise!!)
