Good News: 9 out of 10 American Anti-LGBTQ+ Bills Failed in 2022
Tumblr media
It is easy to be overwhelmed by transphobic and homophobic political activism these days, and especially in the US, where the Republicans have made the lives of transgender and queer people part of their “culture war”.
Are they winning?
Not really.
There were 315 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in US state legislatures in 2022 (out of which 149  specifically targeted transgender and nonbinary people).
91 percent of the bills failed to become law, the Human Rights Campaign reports.
At the same time 24 pro-equality bills were  passed into law..
The numbers are found in HRC’s State Equality Index 2022.
The State Equality Index
The good news is that good people and compassionate politicians all over the Unites States have managed to limit the immediate damage done by the Republican legislation. This means that there is hope that America many win over all this hate in the end.
But even the failed legislation has an effect.
JoDee Winterhof, Human Rights Campaign Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs, says that
These bills are terrible public policy, and we are also deeply cognizant of how every harmful anti-LGBTQ+ bill that is signed into law has a devastating impact on the lives and well-being of LGBTQ+ people, particularly children.
The legislative assault and hateful rhetoric towards our community has also led to more stigma, discrimination, and ultimately, suicide and deadly violence – particularly against the transgender community. As we continue our fight for LGBTQ+ equality, this report underscores that equality is the winning side of this issue.
Transphobic shock and awe
Keep also in mind that the political “shock and awe” tactics of the American far right and their TERF allies is meant to wear down trans activists and make good people  numb to all the pain these laws are causing.
The goal is to normalize transphobia to the point where it is seen as common sense.
As far as the right wing extremists goes, this will open the door to the next phase: To force all LGBTQA-people into the closet.
The majority of Americans are not against LGBTQA-people. The trick now is to make the majority  turn this sympathy into a wall against bigotry. That  is definitely possible, both in America and elsewhere.

Can we talk about the fact that Tennessee not only became the first state to ban Drag performances in public, but also banned trans youths gender affirming healthcare?
I live in Tennessee, and yet I've heard nothing of this.

These trending gender swap apps are great and all but.. “Pay my pretty little wallet to virtually change your face very accurately in HD to this gender so you can continue to feel good gender euphoria up in the air, but I’ll put a stop to doing such things in real life and force you to pay this instead of transitioning per month deal, because we can’t have you going out like that in PUBLIC all happy and trans”, society, kinda doesn’t stick.
We will let you do this though so we can profit off of your pain that we cause. Yum.

A win for trans rights!!!!!! 🏳️‍⚧️
The Selbstbestimmungsgesetz (self-identify law) allows trans and intersex people to change their name and gender in the civil registry much more easily than before by submitting a self-disclosure form. This will be possible starting on the 1. November 2024 while the self-disclosure forms can be submitted as early as 1. August 2024 because of the 3 month waiting period in the law. After a name and gender change the person will be barred from changing it again for one year. People of ages 14-17 will need the approval of a legal guardian to change their gender and name while for children under 14 the legal guardians can submit a form for the change.

So Missouri is introducing a bill that would make it so teachers would be charged as sex offenders and put on the registry for "contributing to social transition" of trans youth.
This is so completely fucked up. A teacher can be charged with a class E felony for using they/them pronouns.
They’re making aiding trans people punishable by law. They’re making it illegal to help trans people. They want to make it impossible to support us. They want to cut us off from all resources in society. They want to starve us out.
You can read the whole bill here: https://documents.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills241/hlrbillspdf/5874H.01I.pdf

In the sane part of the world Finland has  passed a new law which allows transgender people aged 18 and older to legally change their gender by a process of self-declaration. They  no longer need medical and psychiatric approval.
Spain approved legislation allowing gender changes by self-declaration last month, while the British government vetoed a similar bill that lawmakers in Scotland passed in December.
Norway, Sweden and Denmark have similar laws to the one of the Finns.
Other countries that allow for an easy change of legal gender are Argentina, Malta, Ireland and Belgium.

I recall saying this before, but it bears repeating:
There could be a billion trans people in the world and it still wouldn't be a bad thing because being trans is not a bad thing. Even if the rate of people discovering they are trans is "disproportionate" to trends from decades ago, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a natural consequence for there being more trans people being able to stay alive, and, overall, being able to live in a slightly more tolerant world. You'd only see that as a bad thing if you actively didn't want trans people to either live or live a life that facilitates wellness.

"Georgia Republicans bundled over a dozen measures that targeted the state’s transgender residents into omnibus packages in a desperate attempt to get them passed. In a stunning defeat for the GOP, every single one of them failed.
Legislators gutted bills that had passed through committee and instead stuffed them full of their anti-LGBTQ+ wishlist items.
Bills that would ban transgender students from playing on teams aligned with their gender identity, ban transgender students from bathrooms aligned with their gender identity, opt parents into notification for every book a student checks out of the library, bar sex education before sixth grade, make all sex-ed classes opt-in and expand obscenity laws to make it easier to ban books with LGBTQ+ content all failed.
“MAGA politicians in Georgia tried it all in service to their anti-LGBTQ+ agenda,” said Human Rights Campaign Georgia State Director Bentley Hudgins, “including silencing debate and gutting unrelated, popular bills that had bipartisan support to ram through policies that would have put young LGBTQ+ Georgians in harm’s way. They failed.”
“It’s undeniable that the tides are shifting, both here in Georgia and across the nation,” Georgia Equality executive director Jeff Graham added. “Anti-LGBTQ actors are losing their political power, and more and more Georgians who know and love LGBTQ people are standing up against their baseless fear-mongering.”
In Florida recently, nearly two dozen anti-LGBTQ+ bills were defeated in the wake of Gov. Ron DeSantis‘s (R) presidential campaign implosion, dozens of measures in Virginia were tabled [Note: In the US, "tabled" means "shelved" or "taken out of consideration - the opposite of its meaning in the UK and other places], and Ohio’s governor backed off his attempt to restrict gender-affirming care access for transgender adults and minors.
Meanwhile, in D.C., Democrats successfully excised 50 anti-LGBTQ+ provisions in the two budget bills passed and signed by President Joe Biden to fund the federal government.
Even Fox News has been forced to acknowledge transgender issues are among the lowest-priority concerns among voters."
