Thrift shopping for books is so different between locations and I feel crazy lucky for how easy it was to thrift shop for books I liked growing up. I'm big on sci-fi and fantasy type of books. Hella easy to find those at thrift stores where I grew up. Where I live now all the books on the shelves at the thrift store are military, religion, political, classical, or really overly popular books that there's thousands of copies of (think fifty shades of grey, twilight, etc).
The same is even true of some of the used book stores. This is within the same state just more rural area vs. suburbia area. I stock up on books when I visit home for sure!

Want to rant a bit about a thrifting app in Europe, Vinted. Like, I love Vinted and it's my go to way to buy books (managed to buy Out Of The Blue hardcover for 5 euro yesterday!) but there's such an annoying thing about it that Vinted is refusing to fix. You can't look up books per language. It is SO annoying oh my god! Especially because I'm from the Netherlands and all the other countries which I can buy from (and there's no way to stop a country from showing up in results) are bigger then my own. So it's very close to looking for a needle in a haystack if I want to thrift a book in Dutch or English. 90% of what shows up is French, Italian or Spanish. And the worst part is that a ton of people don't even put the language in the description or title. The local translations for books I look for often don't change the title and keep it in English, so if they don't even have the language in the seller's title/description, I have to essentially analyse every detail to figure out what language it is
It's so annoying I wish they just made it so people can actually look up per language, like no I don't want to see 50 French copies of a book please

Every day I feel the vicious urge to start working on a fake opening title sequence to The Grand Galloping 20s' first story, The Witch From Ponyville, as a proof of concept. I've been watching old Disney movie openings.

Anon works in a thrift shop. They are the curator of donated books. A number of these books are either written by or feature non-white people. What began as a collection for holidays (e.g. Lunar New Year, MLK Jr. Day) grew into a stack of any book featuring a non-white person (e.g. a novel about a Chicano living in the inner-city, bilingual baby books, a short story about an indigenous girl surviving a hurricane, a collection of African myths).
In anon's store the shelves are organized by size and genre, but they have one shelf in the center (albeit below eye-level) designated to be the Feature. They are trying to decide whether to put all the non-white books together on the feature shelf for those who may be looking for books about non-white people, or to stick to sorting everything unilaterally by size and genre.
