28 dates with Unit Bravo
Day 3: DATE
Pairing: Nate x f!Detective (Berenice Bailey)
Warnings: None, this is just fluff. Berenice is freaking out because she has her first date with Nate, but Farah is there for her.
Words: ~1.2k
☾ 一一一一一一一一一 ☽
"That's it, Berry. That's the one."
Berenice rolled her eyes at Farah, eying the vampire comfortably spread on her bed while she looked at herself in the mirror.
"You've said that about the last five dresses!"
Farah huffed. "Because they all were perfect! Seriously, is this a human thing? You have to try on a hundred dresses before a date?"
The detective groaned, sitting down on the bed beside her friend, fingers getting lost in her black hair. "I know I'm being ridiculous. But it's our first date date."
"What about the carnival one?"
"That caught me off guard!" Berry turned her gaze towards the golden one of the vampire, and she could see her anxiety. "I didn't dress up or thought about what we were going to do, I was just there and suddenly we were on a date!" Farah put a comforting hand on her back. "I just want to look different than I normally do, I want tonight to be special for Nate."
Farah snickered and gained an outraged glance from the other woman. "Sorry, but Nate is over the moon since you two started dating. You could show up naked and I'm sure he'd be delighted. Though I guess you wouldn't make it to the restaurant then."
Berenice let out a laugh before swatting at her arm playfully. "You're as bad as Morgan."
The tension on her body seemed to ease as they laughed together.
"Seriously though…" Farah started, and was about to remind Berenice of the fact that Nate had seen her with her usual bright sundresses, as well as in her PJs, in training clothes, with no makeup, even bloodied and bruised, and he had fallen for her because she was more than the way she looked or the clothes she wore. But knowing Berenice, that would probably make her tear up and it had taken forever for her to do her eyeliner, so she just said: "The dark blue one."
The brunette perked up. "The strapless one? Isn't that one a little too… tight?"
"You gotta strut your stuff, babe." Farah winked at her. "Got any heels? I've always seen you in flats, and that way you won't look like a gnome beside Nate."
"I got the peep toe pumps I bought for my last blind date." She started taking off the dress and putting on the one Farah had said. "Which I canceled, so I spent a day walking on them through the apartment for nothing - wait, did you say I look like a gnome?!"
The vampire cocked a brow. "How long ago was that date?"
"Uh… two years, I think?"
"Damn, Berry."
"What? I was tired of trying to find someone, I thought if the right person was going to appear, they would find me." She finished zipping up her dress and turned to see a wistful smile on Farah's face. "What is it?"
"You and Nate are perfect for each other."
The smile spreading on Berenice's face quickly turned into a panicked expression at the sound of a knocking on the door. "He's here! Eeek!" She jumped on the spot, trying to find the shoes on her wardrobe but only managing to make a box of sandals fall on her forehead. "Not the time!" She said through gritted teeth.
"Whoa. Please, chill. I'll get the door."
Berenice threw her a grateful smile as Farah walked out of the bedroom, shaking her head with amusement. She opened the door to find a smiling Nate. Farah looked at him up and down, he was wearing a light grey shirt with a dark blue tie, the same color of his fitting jeans.
"Damn, Natey, don't you look nice for our dear detective." She teased, but the smile on her face was genuine. "Nervous?"
Nate smoothed some inexistent wrinkles from his shirt, but his grin was the brightest she had ever seen. "More like excited. Incredibly so."
Berenice stepped into the living room walking steadier on her high heels than Farah had thought she would, but when she looked down her legs she realized she was wearing a pair of black flat booties.
She needed to feel comfortable - and also be able to keep in pace with Nate's strides - if they were going to take a walk after dinner. She needed to feel she was prepared for everything, and she could not feel in control wearing 5 inches heels.
But the knots inside her stomach melted into butterflies when she met those chocolate eyes. They were slightly widened, his lips parted as he exhaled a deep breath, and she was suddenly glad she had listened to Farah's advice about the dress.
"Berenice." He practically sighed, stepping inside the apartment, and she met him halfway, looking up at him. "I'm afraid you've rendered me speechless." He chuckled, a hand rubbing the back of his neck. She was staring at him with fascination, taking in how different he looked without his usual layers of warm colors, and how beautifully the silvery grey of his shirt complimented his tawny skin.
Without knowing how, their hands had found each other, and they both looked down at their intertwined fingers, Nate giving her a soft squeeze.
"Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds to it." Farah grinned widely, stepping outside the door. "Remember you have a reservation, you will miss it if you stay there looking at each other all night."
Nate almost rolled his eyes at the interruption of their tender moment, but Berenice looked back to Farah.
"Thank you for everything. See you soon?"
The vampire winked at her. "Maybe tomorrow morning if you don't sleep in your apartment tonight." And with that, she was gone, only the sound of her giggling behind her.
Berenice snorted a laugh and looked up to Nate's flushed face, and it was her turn to squeeze his hand. "You look so handsome." She said softly, and his demeanor relaxed. He tugged her hand and brought her closer, leaning down to her until he could place a kiss on her cheek. The thunderous drumming of her heart the best soundtrack he could wish for.
"You look absolutely lovely tonight, Berry." He kissed her forehead next, his eyes falling to a red spot. "Did you hit your head?" He carefully caressed the area as he heard her snort a laugh before covering her mouth with her hand.
"My wardrobe attacked me." She vaguely explained, and he wanted to ask more, but she was on her tiptoes and her hand was tugging him down by his tie.
He obliged happily, lips finding each other softly, a welcome kiss to mark the start of their first night going out together as a couple. He had everything planned, but all his thoughts were lost at the soft insistence of her tongue against his lips, searching his own, and soon the kiss was deeper and he groaned into her mouth before straightening up, pecking her lips one last time.
"We should go if we want to make it on time." But the way his half hooded eyes stared at her parted lips let her know how reluctant he was to stop kissing her. She nodded, half entranced by those deep eyes and his half smile.
When he offered his hand, she took it without a second thought, fingers intertwining as if they had been doing this for ages.
"Shall we?"
"Let's go."
And so started the first date of the countless they would share.

Taking care of our boy? - Vinnie Hacker
Hey love 😘 Thank you so much for your request, I hope my story did it justice … I made a few changes, but the idea is still there 🙄 I feel like Vinnie would be such a baby when he’s sick 😆 Enjoy
Warning : None
Word Count : 1.2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vinnie hated being sick. He had been feeling off the past couple of days and when he woke up congested, his throat burning, he groaned, rolling onto his side seeing you laying peacefully next to him. You had fallen asleep the night before, after going to Vinnie’s room to watch anime with him. You, being a newly big TikToker, had moved into the Hype House a few months ago, hitting it off quickly with him. You always got teased for it, often getting shipped online with the fact that you guys seemed to be close to each other. People weren’t totally wrong since you and Vinnie had decided to start dating a few weeks ago, hiding it to the public due to the fact that it was still new and scared of the hate you would get if his fans found out.
Not a lot of people knew about your relationship, just your closest friends and of course the other members of the Hype House. Living with them, didn’t make it easy to keep you both a secret, but they respected your decision. You had thought about coming out since people kind of assumed you were together after seeing how close you both were in Thomas and Alex’s vlogs. The responses to their videos were mostly sweet and encouraging, so you often thought about it. You had both posted a few TikToks with each other over the past couple of months and you were seen leaving places together lately, hinting to the public that something was happening between you and Vinnie
He tried getting back to sleep, closing his eyes, coughing a few times before feeling you move beside him. You got closer to him wrapping one of your arms around his torso, opening your eyes as you felt the temperature of his body.
“Baby, you’re boiling hot” you gasped, lifting your upper body to look at him, putting your hand on his forehead. He groaned again before coughing making you sight
“I’ll run you a bath so you can relax, and I’ll go to the store to buy some medicine, okay baby?” you said getting up grabbing a hoodie out of Vinnie’s closet
“You don’t have to do that, I’ll be fin-“ he got interrupted by a fit of coughs
“Sure” you chuckled lightly “Wait here, the bath should be done in a few minutes” you said, disappearing into the bathroom connected to his room, turning on the faucet for the water to start running. You took a towel putting it near the bathtub, calling him in when it got filled up
“Ok, so I’ll run to the store really quick, I’ll be back in a few, try to relax” You said leaving a kiss on his temple, before leaving his room, going downstairs towards your car.
You got back home about 30 minutes later with a bag filled with medicine for Vinnie when you phone dinged indicating a new notification. You opened your phone, seeing that Vinnie had just posted a new Tiktok. You shook your head, laughing slightly, even when sick, he always found a way to make something for his fans. The video consisted of him getting his head out of the water, his hair now being wet. Vinnie being Vinnie, didn’t write much for the caption
Sick 🤧
The comments were already flooded with a bunch of messages from girls saying how much they would kill to come take care of him and how good looking he was. You put your phone in your back pocket as you entered the house, making your way to the kitchen seeing the others sitting at the counter, sipping on their coffee, laughing at something Michael had said.
“Look who decided to join us earlier than usual” Alex said pointing his camera towards you, as showed him your middle finger, sticking out your tongue
“Ouhhh grumpy, she probably didn’t have her coffee yet guys, excuse her” he said laughing, turning the camera back towards Calvin, who was trying to do god knows what. You went to the fridge, taking out some fruits to cut while you put the teakettle on the stove, waiting for the water to boil. You prepared everything while listening to their stories and laughing at them. You took out a tray, placing a plate of freshly cut berries with two mugs and some pills on the side to bring up to Vinnie.
“Two mugs? Perhaps the tea is for Vinnie? Taking care of our boy while he’s sick, I see” Alex stated, grinning softly as he turned the camera back towards you
“Vinnie’s sick? I didn’t know” you said shrugging your shoulders “I’m just really thirsty, that’s all” you continued as you picked up the tray, the others humming, knowing well enough you were lying.
“Anyways, see you later, I have some things to take care of” you said already halfway out of the kitchen making your way up the stairs
“I bet you guys a hundred bucks that the things she needs to take care of is Vinnie” Michael said, laughing as he shook his head.
Arriving to Vinnie’s bedroom you knock on the door hearing a faint “come in” before opening the door, seeing your boyfriend lying in bed, watching anime.
“Hey baby, I brought you berries and tea” you said walking up to him while he moved to sat down “Here take these” you handed him the medicine and his cup of tea while you move to sit beside him with the plate and your own cup of coffee.
“Thank you” he sipped on his tea, the hot liquid soothing the tickled in the back of his throat. You had both finished eating and drinking, putting the plates and mugs away on the nightstand when Vinnie started coughing again
“Poor baby” you said stroking his warm cheeks “Is there anything else I can do to make you feel better?” you asked him, worried
“Can we just stay here and cuddle?” he said looking into your eyes, pouting as you smiled at him
“Of course, Vin” you answered as he laid his head on your chest, your hands massaging his scalp slowing, making him let out a small groan of appreciation, enjoying the comfort. A few moments later, the sound of light snoring made you smile softly, indicating Vinnie had fallen back asleep. You knew he didn’t sleep much the night before, so you were happy that he could relax for a bit. You could hear some shuffling in the hallway and soon enough the door opened, Alex and Michael entering the room, fake gasping at the sight before their eyes.
“Well, well, well what do we have here?” Alex said, capturing every moment on his camera
“Shhh! Can’t you see he’s sleeping” you whispered-yelled trying to shush them up, wavering your hands for them to go away
“I guess I was right hun?” Michael said to the camera, a wide grin on his face.
“Mhhhhh” Vinnie groaned, squeezing your body tighter “Baby, tell them to go away” he mumbled groggily, still sleepy.
“AH I TOLD YOU SO! You guys owe me 100 bucks” Michael shouted as he pointed the lenses with his index finger, before Vinnie threw a pillow at him, exhausted
“I swear if you guys don’t get out –“ he got interrupted by the two guys laughing and exiting the room, closing the door behind him. You laughed lightly as he laid back down on your chest
“They are so annoying” he sighed “Thanks for taking care of me baby”
“Anytime Vin” you responded, smiling, leaving a kiss on his forehead.

Demigod MC Series: Demeter
Have I been using this series to vicariously punish Belphie for the events of Season 1? I cannot confirm nor deny that statement.
Demigod MC Series: Intro, Aphrodite, Hermes, Hades, Dionysus, Demeter
Lucifer
Didn't think too much of the "human" when they popped out of the portal. Sure they had a straw hat and a huge basket full of produce but it wasn’t like they were… Wait… No… Were they…?
Oh no. Oh nonononono, this is not good…!!
Demeter is notoriously doting and protective of her children (see her freakout and breakdown after Hades abducted of Persephone as proof) and they've pretty much done the EXACT. SAME. THING. here!!
It was a mad scramble by him and Diavolo to contact and appease their godly Mother Bear before she came roaring down to Devildom herself to turn them all into barley. Thankfully, Zeus must have intervened at some point because though she was indeed PISSED, she didn't threaten to barge in… yet.
She made one thing very clear. Bend so much as a single hair on her precious child's head and there would be WAR…
The MC received a 24 hour security detail after that. Just Mammon wasn't going to cut it, he needed NO chances. It was a full rotation of Mammon, him and Beel for the entirety of their stay (Asmo and Levi both threw hissy fits at the prospect of babysitting, Satan couldn’t be trusted not to kill them just to irritate him, and Belphie was out for… obvious reasons).
In some ways, it wasn’t so bad. The MC was a very mild sort of person, rather even tempered. He’d dare say they were pleasant, mostly content to just tend to their gardens and be out in the moonlight…
But the problem was, he just could not convince them to stay OUT of nature. Including the forests, which were full of hellish beasts fully intent on gnawing their flesh from their bones… and their specialty was plants, not animals, sooo…
Their habit of sneaking out to wander the woods got so bad that he very nearly considered pulling a Belphie 2 and locking them in the basement for their own good. But Devil knows what damage their mother would do if she found out…
At least they make for pleasant company… And Diavolo seems to like them quite a bit himself so the mortal gets a pass from him. Now if they’d only consider their own safety for a change…
Mammon
They make him a KILLING.
Like, no seriously. Their produce is insane!! He’s never tasted food so good, especially stuff that’s come fresh from the ground! It only took a few berries for Mammon to throw on a straw hat himself and start harvesting! He’s a farmer now, baby!!
Weeellll not quite. He’s still absolutely only in it for the money, but anything he brings to a farmer’s market goes so fast that he can hardly care about the labor! He’s never made this much Grimm in his life!! And it’s totally legit for a change!
He bought himself another car, paid off half of his debt, and even got Levi back that 2 or 3 grand he leant him centuries ago. Really, Mammon’s living his best life and it’s all thanks to MC!
It’s a good thing his blatant grifting doesn’t hurt his relationship with them at all, in fact they seem to enjoy having his help regardless. They bring him drinks on hot days or invite him on picnics and stuff, it’s… it’s really sweet. They’re very nice to him and he appreciates it…
But… COULD YA JUST STAY PUT ALREADY???
It drives him INSANE that they won’t stay out of dangerous places!! After he started caring about them for more than just a meal ticket it only got even worse!!
He’s not usually one for monitoring someone’s every move (that kind of control freak behavior is more a Lucifer thing) but he eventually had to set up familiars around the House just to keep them from sneaking out at night...
What was so interesting out there anyway?? There wasn’t any kind of plant that he could bring them himself! They didn’t have any need to be out there!!
They’d keep telling him they’d be fine but it’s not like he’s going to actually buy that. They were too… nice to be dangerous or anything so why would he believe them?
No more running off, MC! Please, he’s beggin’ ya!!
Leviathan
Wait, gardening? Like, being outdoors and stuff? Ew. No thanks, he’ll pass.
That was more or less his first reaction when they showed up and it never really got much better than that…
He admits that they’re friendly and it’s not like he dislikes them or anything, but their thing so far from his thing that they just don’t have a lot in common… you know?
For starters, they get So. Antsy. when they’re inside for too long! He tried to invite them to a marathon once, but they could hardly keep still and kept looking around like they were searching for a window… He said, “to jump out of.” They insisted just for some fresh air, but he didn’t buy it...
They’re nice enough to listen to his rants, but they’re barely ever inside for him to do so and like HELL is he going to leave his room and stand around out there for that long. Ranting is at least a one to two hour engagement! What if he gets hot out there? And have you SEEN Devildom bees?? Hell no!!
He has, however, asked them on multiple occasions to reproduce flowers he’s seen in different anime, especially ones that have a very unique look and they’ve done some real wonders with that!
He can now claim to be the only person to ever own a Ruby-Jade Vine plant, straight from the pages of TSL when it was used to brew tea for the Lord of Lechery during his brief illness and-is anyone even still listening anymore?
The point is, it’s a flower so rare it was imaginary but now HE has it!... or had it for about a week until his utter incompetence of all things plant killed it…
He begged the MC for another but they were out of the plants they needed to make it and would have to go back to the human world to find more… He’s still mourning his loss… Poor Henry 4.0…
Satan
Well… He’s called this MC “salt of the Earth” and he does truly mean it. Take of that what you will.
He doesn’t get much in the way of intellectual conversation out of this mortal UNLESS he’s talking about plants, farming, or botany… Interesting topics and complex in their own right to be sure, but that’s pretty much their wheelhouse and they like it there.
That being said, the feats that they can perform are genuinely mind-blowing! They are the ONLY person he has ever met who can cultivate the Devildom’s own ultra-rare Phantom Orchid, a plant only blooms when it reaches a perfect state of undeath (i.e. both taken care of and neglected just enough so that it's only barely alive. The balance is so tricky to master that one hasn’t bloomed down there for centuries!)
There’s also something just genuinely relaxing about watching them work or helping them in the gardens… More so than he’d ever expected from such a simple activity.
He admits that he’s taken quite a few strolls through the flower-filled courtyard of the Demon Lord’s Castle just to admire its beauty... But anything that they can grow just blows all of that out of the water!
They even taught him several magic botanical techniques so now he can grow some pretty mad plants himself. Lucifer never expected to find that giant Venus Flytrap in his closet, but one was there regardless. 😏
Just… out of curiosity one day, he asked the MC if they could make him a new kind of catnip. Not for any nefarious reason! You know… just for research purposes…
The nip they made was so effective that the House grounds were FILLED with nipped-up cats for a whole month! He was in Heaven!! (and Lucifer practically wiped those plants from existence so he couldn’t get any more… asshole...)
That must have inspired them because they apparently made a demons-only version that they told him about WELL after the fact. Had he known, he probably would have burned the stuff on principle... Do you know how dangerous demon-nip could be to them? Experiment responsibly, MC!
Asmodeus
Ehhhh, gardening SOUNDS like one of those things that should be super Devilgram-able, but then you realize how sweaty and dirty you get in the process and it’s a huge turn off… Sorry MC.
When they first came down to the Devildom, he thought two things: 1) Such a sweet little flower child, as adorable as they were, would never survive; and 2) even if they could, he would never ever see eye-to-eye with them on the “wonders” of getting all up in the dirt.
Well, he was right about 2, but certainly not 1. Personally, he thinks his brothers worry about them too much, they ARE still a demigod.
At one point he saw a pack of hellhounds almost trample one of their vegetable gardens and they lost it. Word to the wise, never try to take on a child of Demeter in their own garden. Those hounds were wrapped up in rose vines before they could even yelp...
Yeah, the MC would be fine.
That being said, while everybody else clamors over their produce, he thinks that their flowers are really where it’s at!
Taking just five minutes in one of their gardens is something else... He’s never seen blossoms as healthy and immaculate in all the Devildom before! Their beauty could (almost) rivals his own! What they do isn’t just a hobby, it’s an art.
He’s taken multiple pictures with their blossoms and they go viral every time. It’s so rare to actually see gorgeous, petal-filled flowers in the Devildom, most of the native plants are of the man-eating variety.
His only complaint about this MC is that they seem to feel much more at home in work clothes and dirt than they do in any sort of party-look he tries to give them… Cute as they are, they can afford to gussy up sometimes can’t they? Mud and grass stains don’t make for a good look, sorry.
Beelzebub
Beel gardens and the MC gardens as well. Add on that they seem to be able to grow all manner of fruits and veggies and he likes this one. A lot.
They had just finished apple-picking when the portal nabbed them so they had a massive basket of apples at the time. Naturally, Beel more or less stole the thing on sight, but the apples inside were so juicy and good that he almost shook them down for more on the spot!
Imagine his surprise when they, half pleadingly, explained to him that if he got them some seeds they could just grow more… and it wouldn’t even take that long.
To be clear, the formula he saw was this: Get seeds > bring seeds to mortal > mortal grows seeds > mortal makes endless supply of food….
Congratulations MC, you’ve now earned the sixthborn’s eternal loyalty after a grand total of… two minutes. He didn’t even know their name, but he was willing to take a bullet for them (provided he got more of those apples).
The next several months were spent with Beel attached to them to the hip in some way, but honestly? It was just so wholesome anyway…
If he’s helping in the garden, he never complains. He does most of the heavy lifting and actually likes being out there with them (unlike others...)
Many afternoons were spent sitting under fruit trees and talking. Sometimes, they go to the trouble of preparing a picnic or something but it would always inevitably end with Beel plucking the whole tree clean of whatever ripe (or unripe) fruit he can get his hands on with a smile.
The MC never minded though. That’s just another excuse to grow more, right?
His only problem was when the MC would sneak out to the forest… especially when they get too antsy and just go alone.
He HATES it when they do that! How is he supposed to keep them safe if they just wander off?? He knows that they have a special connection to nature and all, but it isn’t safe…
He’s flown in and scooped them back up to the House on numerous occasions and his “talking tos” get sterner after every rescue... Please stay put, MC! He’d have so many reasons to be sad if you were eaten… 😔
Belphegor
Okay, he was looking for a capable, if not gullible, human. Not a shoeless flower hippy!
He honestly wasn't expecting much out of this one... Damn their little heart because they did genuinely believed his lies, it’s just that they weren't… well… They were really good at gardening.
… And it grew kind of hard to keep hating them whenever they'd show up just to give him fresh berries or a bouquet to see him smile… He may claim that his heart is made of nightmares and orphan tears, but who doesn’t enjoy being given a batch of flowers?
Damn their sweetness too… Right to here.
When it came time to kill them he had a heavier heart than he thought he would, but kind of saw it like putting down the sacrificial lamb. Gotta be done to reach better goals... Stiff upper lip and all that.
Unfortunately for him, they had taken to carrying packets of demon-nip with them as a self-defense measure…
He wasn’t exactly sure what he expected when they shouted “Get nipped!” at him mid-attack, but it wasn’t a face full of some smelly herb! Like, really smelly…! Actually, that smelt kind of good… Hold on.
Turns out murderous rage really doesn’t last long after you get what is effectively ultra-strong catnip thrown in your face. They ended up having to go and tell Lucifer what happened themselves because Belphie was way too blissed out on the floor to do anything... They were legitimately worried they might have fried his brain...
He’s told the effects of the demon-nip lasted three days. He doesn’t know, because he hardly remembers any of it... They described him as like he was high on “weed” and “ecstasy” at the same time but he doesn’t know what either of those are either so it wasn’t helpful…
Truthfully, they were so nice to him while he was recovering that he couldn’t even be mad afterwards so all's well that ends well? Either way, he’s sleeping under their orchard trees from now on. It’s peaceful out there...
They burnt all that nip though. It’s some strong stuff...

Seers' Miscellany
Prologue: Origins of the first bloom
A circular fic for the Dainsleif mini-series I'll be working on. This will be the introduction; of the evanescent bough keeper of the new world. "Observers of the North do not usually wind up in personal business, but when they do, in their wake comes great shifting of the plates of the timelines." Logs of the stag and the delicate flower.
Pairings -> Dainsleif x Reader; Reader is NOT Traveler
Word Count -> 1579
Themes -> Pretty sad, but also fluffy
Chapters -> 1
Warnings -> Story progression takes a while, oh dear why am I doing this now, I'm so busy
Tumblr media
"500 mora; and three answered questions."
He's not really sure what lead him to indulge the requests of a simple adventurer when he made his rounds around the city of freedom. Was it the simple need for currency? It couldn't be, he was better off with other commissions that Katheryne could offer.
Was it the desperation in your voice and eyes? You looked at him like a prophet, your only salvation, and perhaps in this context that may be true. You were but a lone adventurer and the way your weight leans heavier on one foot shows your struggle to those who have keen eyes like him, no other person wished to indulge your needs and you were getting desperate.
Or was it the three questions? Dainsleif have yet to hear such contractual obligations before, but it felt as tho it was the most important part of the agreement he took the moment you pleaded with that soft voice. Humble yet resolved, not letting him walk away without at least considering it once.
And so he found himself traversing the land of the wolves through a dangerous path, where you skip ahead with a gait of happiness, bubbly and energetic enough to surpass even his long legs. You hummed without consideration at the glee of finally having a companion, and he did not mind it at the slightest despite the attention it may bring upon your little party.
"First question," Dainsleif fleeted his gaze away from the horizon to turn to you whom slowed your pace to match his, head looking over your shoulder with a wide grin. "How are you?" So innocent.
He huffs in amusement, the most emotion you've seen of him. "You don't need to waste a contract question for such a simple question, you know," he stands behind you as you crouch down on a shrubbery filled with Wolfhooks. Your main objective for visiting Wolvendom in the first place.
You assured him that you meant your question in every way possible as your hands carefully pick at the herbs, wary of the thorns and the intrusive prickly leaves. Despite your attention turned away from him he knows you await his answer. Dainsleif hums to himself and stops—
How is he? What does he truly feel in this moment of his time?
A simple question yet risked for one of the three inquiries agreed upon definitely holds a deeper meaning. His train of spiraling thoughts halts upon the sound of otherwordly grunts and chants as he turns away from your still busy form (you seem very focused on your foraging) to find three Hilichurls approaching with ill intent.
Dainsleif squints at the impending threat before shooting a final glance to make sure you weren't looking. His arm glows blue as he raises it, power in the form of blue swirling mist surges around him - how are you? The feeling brings him back to vague memories of his past, of the energy rising through him at his expeditions with an old companion, of the thrill spent upon encountering the unexpected. Such thoughts are not vivid but the familiarity of what he is experiencing right now was enough for him.
Though he was sure that there were no camps before they went through this route.
"You asked me how I am," he spoke when you finally turned from the bush with an armful of Wolfhooks on your arsenal, confusion on your face at the sight of downed Hilichurls and the side profile of the bough keeper.
His cerulean eyes were fixated at his left hand that he repeatedly closes and opens for a few seconds, before he fully turns to you (your eyes did not miss the blue glow from underneath his cape, where his right arm should be) with a wisp of a smile, "I feel alive right now."
You reciprocated the gesture with a wide grin, "I'm glad to hear that!"
A majority of the wolfhooks gathered where given to the little Botanist Chloris, the seller of flowers, who looked relieved and ecstatic upon your arrival. Something Dainsleif took great notice of. Carefully handing over the berries and some which you had to pluck singularly from your companion's flowy cape, the little girl gave you her Valberries in exchange.
It was sweet and familiar, something Dainsleif took note as he accepted your offer of the fruit despite his none need for sustenance.
Your little chewing sounded through as you two settled on the humble camp you managed to setup with your supply for a single individual. There was a little hole in the middle for a campfire Dainsleif had made the effort to prepare knowing the coldness the night will bring soon enough, and your fragile form is not something he wishes to bargain now. Is that really the reason? Perhaps in the back of his mind, he was really just working on forgotten routines.
"Second question," his footstep at the edge of the camp halts as he turns once again, where you sat on the mat as tonight's bedding, hands flicking to remove the stray juices of the berries. He stood still in wait before he goes back to his mini mission of getting fire wood.
"Go on," he urged when you stood a minute longer in silence.
"Do you like traveling, Dain?" Easy enough, he simply said yes and left when you ended the conversation with a nod.
When he came back with the wood and tinder bundle for easy spreading, out of the corner of his eye he watched your hands work on the mortal and pestle as you grinded the remaining wolfhooks on your person. The fire started the moment he was done setting up the kindling and your face filled with admiration at the sudden and immediate spark, praising him for his quick work.
Dainsleif is both talkative and not, and at times he finds himself rambling to the wind. The moments of the night passed without much details until he found himself talking about his past adventures with his old companion, of the world they've seen together and the now estranged relationship between them.
His responses were sometimes cryptic unintentionally, and he apologizes when there are things about it that he couldn't answer simply because he could not remember. When silence struck after he finished his tales and meal, the beautiful spike in his eyes found yours gleaming despite the drowsiness pulling at your whole feature.
"I'm glad you're very fond of traveling. If not, I wouldn't have met you," and he wouldn't have taken the commission. Dainsleif's eyes flashed in recognition, finally understanding the meaning behind your second question. Somehow this little commission deal turned into a silent back and forth quip of him understanding past your simple inquiries.
Like a little game he muses on with his curious mind.
That night you rested with the extra comfort of his eccentric cape, something you needed more than him as he gazes over the clear night sky. His eyes silently traced the galaxy of stars while the sound of your whispered breathing accompanies his sleepless night.
The last question and that last of your very quick expedition came the next day at the cliffside overlooking the lair sealed by winds.
Your fingers were dusted by the violet paste of grinded wolfhooks long consumed the night prior, stained fingers gripping the thin and fragile stem of the yellow dandelion in its grasp. It was his great observation that let him realize the disaster that happened now but even his foresight could not prepare him for what has to come.
"Third question," his head snapped down to watch your ethereal face don a calm smile, the sun's setting light kissing your cheeks in the right angle that matched that of the clean clouds above. Your eyes silently questioned his unfocused gaze but he only shook his head.
Don't worry about it. "I know this last question would end the commission with you," your voice trembled in both fear and fatigue but Dainsleif didn't force you to preserve your strength like he should. "But I wanted to ask, maybe tomorrow again,
do you want to be my traveling companion?"
The hand that clutched the Dandelion found it way to the side of his mask, the petals brushing against his eyelids as he looks down at you with an eye. A ghost of a smile lingers on his lips as he leans on your hand.
"It would be my pleasure."
Life momentarily flashed over your orbs before you let out a sharp exhale and a breathless, joyous laughter. Relief overtook the tension that laid on your shoulders, and your hand would have dropped to the ground immediately if he had not gripped it on the last second.
"That sounds good. I've always wanted to travel the world," he pulls the cape closer around your form as your eyelids droop to a close. And he witness another breathe, "It was supposed to be today, but I feel really tired today, I'll rest early too if that's okay."
He rose from the ground with you in his arms, "I'll be here."
"Mmm thank you... good... night."
"Good night, little dandelion."
And perhaps that distant memory from faraway had urged him to invite and indulge, when he saw the same spark of intrigue and desperation, of the warmth of carefree days in front of him.
"But I will require advance payment,
500 Mora, and three answered questions."

please share your other annie post-rumbling headcanons!! :o
cottagecanon | the road not taken
so many of them are just Annie having a relationship with her dad, and living a life . i'm also very drawn to the idea of giving her gentle domestic lesbian bliss. tea with honey, bookshelves filled with pressed flowers, and general cottagecore sweetness.
Tumblr media
i have headcanons that Annie would explore a creative side of herself that she never had the mental space for now that she isn't fighting/training nonstop or a spy.
but of course it's Annie so she'd be doing things like woodworking/carving. she'd go out into the woods with an ax slung over her shoulder and come back lugging a log that's bigger than she is. she'll chop it up herself, and she absolutely leaves her ax in the tree stump she uses as a chopping block.
her dad loves to show off the things that she's made. he'll slap his hand on the back of anyone who is willing to listen and loudly say: "look at the craftsmanship on this chair! my daughter made it. isn't she so talented?"
when they talk to each other, they constantly refer to each other as father/daughter because they can. and every time Papa hears Annie call him dad, and every time he calls her his daughter or his little girl, they smile like idiots at one another to the point where they get distracted from whatever they're doing.
Annie will ask you to help her make dinner for everyone, and when you're done cooking she'll makes a big deal of calling out "dad! the food's ready!" and making a plate for him.
you're terrified out of your mind when you first moved in with the both of them. on top of all your general nerves, you're also worried that he won't approve since you're A) from Paradis and B) a girl, and you know how much his approval means to Annie.
yet when she sits you both down and tells her dad about your relationship and officially introduces you as someone she's serious about, he just nods. after a few seconds of silence, he gets up and pulls the both of you into a hug.
later that night after she talks to him alone, Annie recounts to you how he said to her that the only thing that mattered to him was being with his daughter, and that he'd accept anyone she loved as long as that person makes her happy.
it's a little bit awkward at first since Papa is a fairly serious guy. but he tries, so hard. he makes painful small talk with you over meals while Annie beams from across the table.
when the two of you go out to go into town or on a date, he waves goodbye to you from a rocking chair on the porch (built by Annie, of course). usually by the time you come back he's either inside taking a nap or he's fallen asleep right there in the chair.
you and Annie go on so many picnic dates together, to the point where you buy a huge, special basket just for that purpose. a lot of the time you'll take long walks through pastures of grazing animals and farmland until you find a spot you want to sit down in.
after spending hours lying around on a blanket and feeding each other fruit and little bite-sized sandwiches, you walk home before it gets dark. a lot of the time you'll make a pit stop about a mile from your cottage to fill up the now-empty basket from a cluster of wild berry bushes you stumbled across a while back.
Annie smashes a berry on your cheek to fuck with you, so you smear a small handful on her in revenge. this leads to an all out berry fight, and you never really are able to get the stain out of the white shirt you were wearing that day. you lost pretty badly.
but after she tackles you to the forest floor, her arms wrap around you and she still kisses you even if you are covered in berry juice. her lips are stained purple when she pulls away but she doesn't even seem to notice. you chase her home with the burst of adrenaline that you have, both of you laughing all the while.
you bake bread, and eat it with jam that you jarred yourself. Annie spent hours standing over 3 separate pots while you measure out sugar and what's left of your ammunition from the berry war.
once you're done, she tells you she'll be right back but then never returns. it takes you longer to clean up than you expect, though when you leave the kitchen and see that Annie is curled up on the couch asleep next to her (also sleeping) dad with her head resting on his shoulder, you don't have the heart to be annoyed.

You groaned as you reread the paragraph you had just finished typing on your laptop, the words seemed to blur together the more you looked at them trying to think of how to finish it off.
You had been working on your final paper for your philosophy class all day. The class was meant to be a simple one but had proven to challenge you more than you expected. The professor adored you and all you had written so far, so you couldn’t deny the extra pressure you were putting on yourself because you wanted to make sure you didn’t disappoint her.
You tapped your fingers anxiously over the open philosophy book next to you on the desk, while the other ran through your hair in frustration. “Only I can pull that hair, princesa. So be gentle with it baby,” you heard Pedro tease behind you.
You jumped not expecting him, your hand coming up to your chest, trying to calm your beating heart, “Daddy! You scared me, I didn’t hear you come in.”
Pedro chuckled leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to your lips, holding a cup of tea out to you, “Sorry baby, I knocked and you didn’t answer so I just let myself in. You sounded stressed earlier when I called and you haven’t answered any of my texts. I figured I would bring you some tea to calm that pretty head of yours.”
You take the cup from him, the cool minty scent hitting you. You take a sip and let out a soft hum and smile as the warmth of the tea floods your body. He seemed to always know just when to show up and take care of you.
You put the cup down and mutter a curse as you look over at your phone that you had silenced filled with multiple messages from him. “I’m sorry, I silenced it to focus and I guess I’ve just been so hung up on the paper I forgot to check it,” you apologize before bringing his face back down for another a kiss before giving him an appreciative smile, “Thank you for bringing me the tea, Pedro.”
You loved the way he took care of you, the way he could so easily read you even if you weren’t in front of, the way he knew exactly what to do when he knew you were too in your head. You looked up at him, staring into those beautiful warm eyes that helped you forget about the world most days. You felt your bottom lip start to quiver, his eyes furrowed in concern, and you looked away feeling the tears prickling at your eyes.
“What’s wrong princesa? Tell me what’s bothering you,” Pedro whispers softly, tilting your chin up to look at him, he had crouched down to be eye level with you. His concerned seemed to open the floodgates and you sniffled as tears blurred your vision.
You let out a little laugh as you wipe your eyes, trying to ease his worry, “I-I’m sorry, I think I’m just overwhelmed from the paper. I’ve been working on it all day.”
Pedro gently cupped your face in his both of his soft hands, he looked at you with such softness and care, like you were the most delicate and beautiful thing in the world that he didn’t want anyone to hurt. Your heart melted at the look, a few more stray tears making their way down your face. “Oh princesa, you don’t need to apologize,” Pedro cooed softly, “You are working so hard and I know the pressure you put on yourself to make everything you do perfect.”
The pads of his thumbs gently wiped the tears off your face and he gave you one of those million dollar smiles that always made your heart skip a beat, “Why don’t you take a break baby? Come rest your eyes from the computer screen a little bit, that way you’ll have a clear mind when you go back to it.”
Pedro presses a kiss to your forehead after you nod, you give him a soft smile as he stands back up and takes your hand. You let him lead you to the leather couch there in the office space you used to study. He sits down and you immediately straddle his lap, wrapping your arms around his neck and bury your head in between his neck and shoulder.
You take in his scent, letting it wash over you feeling your shoulders relax, you didn’t know what it was but sometimes just breathing him in seemed to take your stress away, the rich cologne he always had on mixed with the earthy undertones that were purely him. You closed your eyes as Pedro rubbed your back relaxing into his touch.
You loved him washing over your senses, the peacefulness it brought you. You wished you could bottle up his scent and carry it with you wherever you went. It made you feel safe from the world, like nothing could cause you any harm, and even though you’d never admit it to him, the scent made you feel like you were home. It made you feel like everything would be okay as long as you were surrounded by it.
A grin came across your face as you felt his nose burying itself at the top of your head, knowing he was taking you in as much as you were him. You turned to face his neck, a hand coming down to play with the collar of his button up ivory shirt, you trace your finger down it to the unbuttoned first two buttons. “You never learned how to button your shirts up properly,” you tease as you a press a kiss to his neck.
You feel the rumble in his chest as he chuckles, knowing he was grinning and shaking his head above you. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say it was a problem before, if anything I remember you ruining quite a few of my shirts because of it,” he teased back.
You pull away from his neck and face him, raising an eyebrow at him, “Do we really want to go into ruined clothes? Should I remind you how many shirts, dresses, bras and panties you’ve ruined?”
“I can’t control how sexy you always look baby,” Pedro smirks as his hand moves down to grab your ass, “Just like right now.”
You scoff, rolling your eyes as you swat his chest, “I’m in a t-shirt and yoga pants and I can just imagine the mess my hair is right now from running my hands through it so much the past eight hours, don’t lie to me.”
“I’d never lie to you. I love it when you’re like this baby, relaxed, comfortable, completely yourself. I love having you dressed up next to me but you like this, really turns me on, princesa, always at your most beautiful,” Pedro murmurs his hands grabbing both sides of your hips and pulling you against him, letting you feel his erection pressing against you.
You let out a soft gasp, pressing your hand flat against his chest as the other one tightens around him. Your chest feels like it’s going to burst both from the compliment and the feeling of him against you. “Daddy…” you breathed out, you felt like every inch of your body was already begging you for him but you knew if you started this, you’d never finish your paper that was due before the end of the day. “I want you too…but I can’t..”
“I know princesa, I just wanted you to know the effect you have on me even when you think you’re at your worst,” Pedro said pressing his lips softly against yours, before giving you a cocky grin, “Plus, we both know I could relax you to the point that you won’t even be able to remember your name, let alone what you’re writing.”
“You so owe me after this,” you pout as the thought of him taking you right now makes you stomach twist in desire. “You just have to be so talented,” you mutter.
Pedro winks at you, running his thumb over your bottom lip, “Oh princesa, do well on this paper and I’m going to completely ravish you.”
You run your tongue over his thumb before sucking on it to tease him. He let out a groan and pulled your mouth away winking at him. “I’ll hold you to that daddy, I think you’ve inspired me to finish,” you say grinning as you kiss his cheek moving off his lap and moving back to your laptop. Your fingers immediately went to typing your mind feeling clearer and more refreshed. Even though you had just teased him and left him wanting to bend you over his lap, Pedro watched you smiling, his hand under his chin, as you fell back into your paper with ease, that’s his girl.
Tumblr media
“Daddy?” you called out giddily as you walked into Pedro’s house.
“In the kitchen baby,” you hear Pedro call out and immediately run into the kitchen. You see him sitting at the counter as his maid, Martha, sets a plate of berries on the counter for him, she gives you a kind smile and you beam back at her waving and watch as she excuses herself to give you both privacy.
Pedro turns the stool he’s sitting to face you opening his mouth to greet you but stopping when you throw your arms around him hugging him tight. He puts his hand out to grab onto the counter to hold himself steady from you force.
“Oof, well hello to you too princesa,” Pedro chuckles smiling down at you wrapping his arms around you. You look up at him eyes shining, he could tell you were excited about something, he thought he could guess what, but he wanted to hear you tell him yourself.
“I made a 97 on my final essay!” you tell him practically squealing and bouncing in his arms. You couldn’t wait to tell him the moment you had gotten your paper back. “She told me it was one of the best papers she had received, and it was an honor to have me in her class. She told me she would happily write any letter of recommendation I might need.”
Pedro moves his hands to your face pressing his lips to yours, his smile now as wide as yours when he pulls back, “That’s brilliant baby! I knew you were going to do great. Even she knows what talented and intelligent women you are.”
“I couldn’t have done this without you, you helped me bring me back to earth and finish it,” you told him pressing your lips against his. The kiss was gentle and soft, you wrapped your arms around his neck, your hands running through the soft curls. His mouth tasted sweet from the berries he had been eating and you smiled as you pulled away looking up at him adoringly.
Pedro’s heart swelled as he looked down into your soft eyes, he was happy to see you so excited and yourself again after spending the last weeks stressed. His hands went to your hips, holding you close to him, “You do remember how I said I’d ravish you if you did well?”
You nod biting your lip as you start to play with collar of his shirt, “I do, am I going to get ravished now?”
Pedro chuckled as he starts to rub circles on your waist, “I would love to take you right now but we actually need to leave soon, I’m going to ravish you in more ways than one. How does a weekend trip to an island sound? My private jet is waiting to take us and I’m going to make sure to spoil every inch of you and your body while we’re there baby.”
“I-Isand?” you squeak, eyes widening more excitedly, your eyes welled with tears unable to believe he would plan this for you, even after the many luxurious trips he’s taken you. Each trip felt like the first time with him and you couldn’t help the awe and gratefulness you felt each time, “Oh, Pedro, you didn’t have to!”
“We always talked about staying in one those bungalows in Bora Bora, waking up to the ocean, having those glass floors where we can see the fish. You deserve this baby, you’ve worked so hard all semester. I have everything ready, I packed you a bag while you were on campus,” Pedro caresses your cheek softly, “Let’s do this yeah, princesa?”
You nod pushing back the tears you want to let out and hugging him close, you don’t know what you did to deserve this man but you were definitely going to continue to show him every day just how much you were.
Tumblr media
You hum as you feel Pedro’s fingers trail up and down your bare legs. He had kept his word in ravishing you the moment you both had gotten to the island, immediately blessing each room in the bungalow. Something about the trip had you both all over each other unable to keep each other’s hands off the other. You could feel the shift in your relationship, like something had further fallen into place between you two, bringing you closer than before.
Even when Pedro wasn’t fucking you against any surface he could find, he would have his hand on your back, in your hand, on your shoulder, stomach, or on your leg like now. You felt your heart skip a beat each time, the feeling of him needing to be touching you even in the slightest way making you feel even more special to him. You were both laid out at the beach, that morning you both had gone snorkeling around the coral reef, both of you grinning like idiots when you came up chatting about the different fish you had seen, and decided to visit the local beach even though you had your own section by the bungalow.
Pedro had been admiring the little one piece he had gotten you to wear for the trip. He loved the way it hugged each of your curves and was cut out in all the right places, covering what it needed but also still showing enough skin for him to touch. You looked over at him as he continued to absentmindedly touch you, his other hand was holding up the book he was reading. He had on his favorite Tom Ford sunglasses you took in his bare broad shoulders, making your way down his chest to the slim yet soft stomach of his that you loved, you bit your lip as you took in the red swim trucks that looked delicious against his tan skin, you could see his small elephant tattoo peeking out from his inner thigh.
“Like what you see princesa?” you hear Pedro’s deep voice say. You feel your cheeks warm at being caught looking over to see him looking over at you a playful smile on his face.
“When do I not?” you ask pushing down your sunglasses and raising an eyebrow at him.
Pedro chuckled putting his book down, “Baby, there’s children around, you shouldn’t be eye fucking me like that.” You didn’t have to see his eyes to know they were crinkled in amusement.
“Says the guy who has been trying to get in my bathing suit since we got here,” you shot back slipping your sunglasses back on and giving him a smile back.
Pedro smirked as his hand that had been caressing your leg moved its way up the side of your waist toying with nylon of your swimsuit at one of the cutouts, “Oh I don’t have to try baby, you’ll be begging daddy to pull that off you.”
A shiver went down your spine and you shifted your body against the blanket, trying to ignore the warmth in your stomach at the thoughts of him taking you. “There’s children around for you to be saying things like that,” you retort giggling and closing your eyes willing your mind to focus on other things.
You took a deep breath listening to the waves crashing against the shoreline, the sounds of children laughing and screaming as they played in the water. The sun was starting to set, but you couldn’t deny still how relaxed you had felt sunbathing and just enjoying clear blue skies and ocean. You hadn’t realized just how much you needed this little get away until you had gotten here.
“Why don’t we start making our way back to the bungalow? I have dinner plans for us,” Pedro says and you feel his hand move away from your waist, hearing shuffling beside you.
You look over seeing him close his book and starting to gather his things. “What time did you make reservations?” you ask him as you get up gathering your own things. You look over at him in shock when he answers you in the next hour. “Pedro! It’ll take us ten or fifteen minutes just to get back to the bungalow if we get a cab! If we can track one down fast enough, then we have to shower and get ready.”
“We’re not taking a cab baby, we’re just going to walk, it’s going to be fine,” Pedro answers nonchalantly pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“Walk? Pedro, we definitely don’t have much time then, even if it’s not a nice restaurant we still have to change, or at least I do,” you mumble pouting at him as you see him put his button up shirt back on pulling the crotchet cover up over your head. You place your hands on his chest, “You look like a dream, even with these dorky desk lamps on your shirt.”
Pedro scoffs, “It’s Fendi baby and I didn’t have to see your eyes earlier to know you were eye fucking me in my dorky lamp shirt then too.” You shrug a smile on your lips, he definitely wasn’t wrong. There was something about the dumb shirt that still made you want to kiss down his chest, pull off his swim trunks, and ride him. You helped him button it up leaving the first three unbuttoned, just like you both liked. “You look beautiful just like this and we’re eating close by, you don’t have to worry.”
He reaches out taking your hand in his bringing it up to kiss the top of it. “If you say, I hope we have enough time for me to at least try and fix my hair. It’s going to take us thirty minutes just to get there walking,” you mutter as you both fall into step walking down the beach hand in hand.
“It gives us time to further enjoy the scenery, we can walk all the way down the beach until we get to the road to the bungalows. Plus, the sun is starting to set, we’ll get to see as everything starts to die down and as people leave,” Pedro says gesturing to the way others were starting to pack up there things.
You both walk in a peaceful silence. You couldn’t deny you were enjoying the walk like he said. You both would comment here and there about something you would see. Pedro moved his hand from yours to wrap his arm around your waist and pull you closer to him, you smiled at being nearer to him. The sun was starting to set the beautiful yellow, orange, and purple colors making the ocean seem even more peaceful and calm than before. You stopped a few times when either of you wanted to share a soft kiss. He had your body tingling and you couldn’t wait to get dinner over with so you could enjoy each other.
Once you reached the road, Pedro smiled over at you, “Not so bad huh?”
“Not at all, but I think that took longer than we expected,” you say loving the way his eyes were shining in happiness. He definitely was having as much of a good time as you.
“I think we’ve given enough time for set up,” Pedro says nonchalantly as you make your way to the bungalow you were both staying at. He had chosen the one at the very end that had more beach space in front of it than the others and that had the most space difference between them all.
You took your sunglasses off, quirking an eyebrow, “What do you mean set up?”
Pedro grinned mischievously and shrugged as you both made your way further down the road. You both smiled and nodded as you passed some families or couples renting out the places around you. You were about to ask him again what he meant as you got closer to the bungalow’s pier when your eyes caught the glimpse of lights on the beach.
You paused as you both got closer seeing candles placed in vases leading a pathway down the beach before surround a gazebo that was set up. Your hand went up to your mouth, you felt the familiar prickle of tears in your eyes as you looked over at Pedro who was smiling brightly at you, “Come on princesa, we have a dinner to enjoy.”
You don’t trust you voice as you nod, letting him lead you off the road and onto the beach. The warm night breeze swirled around you both, blowing your hair behind you as you followed Pedro from behind. It seemed surreal, this handsome man leading you by your hand down a candle lit lane to have a beautiful sunset dinner. “Pedro,” you breathed out as you saw the large blanket laid out under the gazebo, fairy lights lit the inside, there was a platter of different fruits laid out on platters, small sandwiches, chocolate covered strawberries, brownies, and a bucket of ice holding a wine bottle.”Y-you planned this?” you asked meeting his eyes.
Pedro smiled as he placed both hands on your cheek pressing a kiss to your forehead, “I told you I was going to ravish you all around.”
“This is beautiful, thank you,” you breathe out and lean up to press your lips against his.
“Anything to see that beautiful smile, baby,” he tells you as he leads you to sit.
He opens up the wine bottle pouring you each a glass as you serve yourselves food on small plates. You chuckle as you see him pile the different fruits on his. He might not eat the healthiest of things but nothing could come in between this man and his berries. Pedro pulled you between his legs, your back pressed against his chest, with your legs crossed and tucked underneath you.
You placed both of your plates beside you, eating with one hand as the other would reach above you to feed Pedro one of his fruits or to give him a bite of a sandwich. You felt like spoiling him after all the work he put in, the set up made you feel like a queen so he deserved to feel like a king.
When you finished eating you leaned back against him, sighing in content. “This has to be one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me, I’m never going to forget this night, “ you admit quietly.
You feel Pedro’s lips start trailing down your neck and you let out a soft sigh, tilting your neck for him, his hand cups your breast through the crotchet material of your cover up, “I can think of a way to make it more memorable princesa.”
“Daddy, if anyone decides to come down the beach they might see us,” you whisper breathlessly. Your heart was starting to race, the warmth in your stomach returning and making its way down between your legs.
“Fuck them if they do, this our area,” Pedro murmurs as he sucks the sweet spot on your neck. You reach behind you running your hand through his curls pulling on them gently as you arch into his touch. “Do you want me to stop baby?”
You shake your head as you pull away to pull the cover up off. You toss it to the side before falling back against his chest and pulling his mouth down yours for a kiss. The kiss starts off soft and gentle before it becomes more desperate and hungry. You pull on his hair to pull his face closer to yours, eliciting a moan from him. His hand finds its way back to your breast, his thumb rubbing your pebbled nipple through the thin material.
You moan running your tongue over his bottom lip begging for entrance pressing yours against his as you both battle for dominance. You can taste the tartness of the wine, the sweet and sourness of the berries on his tongue as you suck on it. He groans pulling away and turning you around to straddle his lap. Your lips meet again and he pulls both of the straps of your swimsuit down, exposing your breasts. You let out a whimper as the cool air hits your warm skin, you felt your nipples harden and Pedro starts kissing down your neck. “So fucking beautiful,” Pedro mumbles as he kisses down your chest. You cry out when his mouth wraps around one of your nipples sucking on it as you grip his shoulders. His other hand kneads the other nipple in between his fingers.
Your eyes close in sweet pleasure as you feel his tongue swirl and the soft pull on the other nipple. Your hips buck against his, feeling the prominent tent in his swim trunks. Pedro switches his hand and mouth continuing his satisfying attack on your breasts. You continue to grind against his hard cock, needing more and more friction. He had lit your body on fire and you needed him to put out the flames.
The more he continued his attack, the graze of his teeth, the hard pull, the more soaked your swimsuit got. His name kept falling from your lips, you didn’t want him to stop, you could care less now if anyone decided to go on a late night walk, all you could think and focus on was Pedro and his mouth and his body and all the things you wanted him to do. “You’re fucking soaked baby, I can feel you soaking my trunks, you want me to fuck you so bad don’t you?”
“Oh fuck yes, please daddy, I need you,” you whimper as he places both hands on you hips, stopping your movements. You pout looking at him pleadingly.
He smirks down at you, “Open,” he commands and you opens your mouth, holding back another moan as he spits in your mouth before bringing his fingers into your mouth coating them, “Can you be a good girl and suck?”
You nod as you swirl your tongue around his fingers, moving your mouth up and down them, you can taste the saltiness from the air and the sweetness of the chocolate covered strawberry on them. You use your tongue on his fingers imagining it was his cock instead.
Pedro’s eyes are dilated and staring down at you hungrily, “Such a good girl, look at you sucking my fingers like they were my cock.” You feel his free hand come down on your ass and you let out a moan at the sweet sting. He repeats the gesture, his hand coming down a little harder with each swat.
If you thought you were wet before you, you knew you were practically gushing now, squirming against his erection, loving how the pain of his hand on your ass felt. You lived for the sting and he knew it, knew the pleasure you found in the pain.
“I don’t even need to touch you to know you’re fucking soaked baby,” Pedro’s voice groaned his voice lower than usual, “You love me spanking you, such a pretty a little princesa.” He pulls his fingers out of your mouth he trails his warm hand down the front of your pelvis. “Fuck just as expected.” You whimper as his thumb rubs your clit from outside the swimsuit, bucking up into his hands. “So wet baby.”
He pulls the material to the side before slipping two slick fingers into your warmth. Your cry out, your head falling between his neck and shoulder as he slowly moves them in and out. “Good girl, so wet for daddy, I can’t wait to be deep in your sweet cunt.”
You meet each thrust of his fingers with your own as he picks up his pace, you curse under your breath as he thumb starts rubbing your clit, “Oh daddy….I can’t- I’m so close, please, “ you plead out knowing you weren’t going to last much longer, you were too needy, to full of desire for him.
Pedro gives you another wicked grin as he curls his fingers into the bundles of nerves that he knows really drives you wild, “OH FUCK!” You’re panting against his neck, your grinding becoming more sloppy as he continues his assault of the sweet curl of his fingers and the rubbing of your clit.
“Come for me baby,” Pedro whispers into your ear nipping at it as you fall apart around him. He feels the way your squeeze around his fingers, it not stopping him from continuing the sweet mixture, wanting you to ride out your orgasm. You cry out, both hands gripping his arms tightly, as wave after wave of pleasure hits you.
You look up at him, eyes hooded as you pull him into a deep kiss, your chest heaving still. You felt like you couldn’t breathe from the orgasm that he had just pulled out of you but you wanted more, you needed him and his fingers had not been enough to put out the flames, if anything they just had you more in need for him. Pedro slips his fingers out, pulling away and keeping his gaze on yours as he sucks his fingers, “Mmm sweet as always princesa.” He moves his fingers from his mouth to yours, you suck obediently getting the last of your arousal off his fingers.
You loved him making you taste yourself, you pull back with a pop, meeting his hungry gaze with your own. You start to unbutton his shirt pushing it down his shoulders. You move off his lap and lay down on the blanket as you watch him stand and pull down his swim trunks, releasing his thick length.
You bite your lip watching as he spits into his hand giving his cock a few pumps, your hands trails down your stomach rubbing your clit at the sight of him. You could not get enough of this man, even now after that orgasm or the many orgasms from the past few days, you felt like you couldn’t get enough. “Did I say you could touch yourself?” Pedro asked, eyes dark with lust. He swatted your pussy, a groan escaping your lips as you moved your fingers away, “This is all mine baby.”
“All yours daddy, please take it,” you breath out watching as he kneels in front of you, your body arches off the blanket as you feel him run his cock along your wet slit before pushing himself inside. “Fuck, daddy!”
Pedro moans as he feels your warmth around his cock, the way your tightness clenches around him as he fills you up. He hooks a leg over his shoulder as he lets you adjust to him. Even if he wanted to be gentle, he couldn’t, not with how pretty you looked with your hair splayed out over the blanket or how ravishing the soft glow of the lights and the candles made you looked as you laid naked underneath them. He pulls out before slamming his cock back inside you causing you to call out his name in pleasure.
“Good girl, look at you taking my cock,” Pedro grits out as he slams into your pussy over and over again.
Your fingers dig into the blanket as your loud moans fill the air mixing in with sounds of the waves crashing. Pedro was relentless and the way he was gripping your hips, you knew you’d have probably have bruises in the morning and you loved it, you loved him leaving marks on your body for you to admire the next day. The sweetness and softness of earlier was gone, instead leaving the hard, passionate man in place that had you feeling like you were going to fall apart any second as he kept slamming into your cervix.
“P-Pedro..I’m going to-so close,” you breathe out, eyes clenching shut, Pedro brings your other leg around his shoulder, the new position hitting you in an even sweeter angle. Your nails dig into the blanket as your head falls back and the sweet release rips through your body. “Daddy!”
“Fuck baby I’m so close, going to fill your pretty cunt up,” Pedro curses out as your walls tighten around his cock and he continues to fuck you through your orgasm, watching the way your eyes roll back as each wave of pleasure hits you. He leans down kissing you deeply as his thrust become more rushed as he reaches his own release filling you to the brim with is cum. His pace slows down and he moans out your name pressing his forehead against yours, beads of sweat on both of your bodies.
Pedro wraps his arms around you, rolling you over so you were laying on his chest. You could hear his heart beating fast underneath you, matching your own racing heart. He holds you close to him, kissing your forehead as he hears you catching your breath. “How was that princesa?” he asks a proud smile coming across his face as he could see you trying to pull words together. He loved knowing how frazzled he left you after sex.
You take a deep breath, a lazy smile coming across your face from how relaxed and on cloud nine your body felt, “Definitely a night I’ll never forget.”

A Dummy's Heartbreak- Victor Li (PT 3)
Summary: The Next Morning… Cassie and Victor try to evaluate their relationship while having breakfast. Should they get back together? Or should they just remain friends?
Paring: Victor Li x Cassie (OC)
Genre: Fluff
Warnings: None!
Fandom: Mr. Love Queen's Choice
Word Count: 1.5k
Notes: Here it is! The long awaited part 3!! I am so sorry this took so long to get out. I literally wrote half of this a month ago and only just got back to writing the rest of it out now. So I apologize if it isn't as good as the first two parts >~> But regardless of that enjoy!!
In case you have not read parts 1 or 2 here's the links! <3:
Part I / Part II
The sun shone brightly into the quiet yet large bedroom, lighting up every inch of the room which slowly stirred Cassandra awake from her slumber.
At first, she had no idea where she was or how she ended up in bed after what happened the night before. However after taking in her surroundings the moment her eyes focused she realized she wasn't alone…
The image of a sleeping Victor Li had filled her vision, and luckily for her, he was still peacefully sleeping.
At times when they were still together, she often found herself waking up before he would and watch him sleep. He looked so soft and vulnerable… So relaxed and peaceful. It was a beautiful sight to behold…
Nobody but her got to see that side of him. Not many got to see many sides of Victor Li.
The cold and seemingly heartless CEO who never showed an ounce of emotion besides a poker face never revealed his soft and vulnerable side.
But when he was with her… He always did.
And that's what she loved most about him. Seeing different sides of him helped her learn more about him as a person and she only fell further in love with him the more she knew about him.
Cassie never truly stopped loving him. Seeing him like this again… She didn't think she could ever love anyone else but him.
She thought this was just a dream; seeing him laying beside her, holding her so close to him… Just like he always had done during the nights when they were together.
It seemed like a cruel dream, her mind torturing her by filling her dreams with the man she loved most yet couldn't be with because they broke up a few months back
However when she moved her hand to lightly caress the soft skin of his cheek, she realized it was reality.. Her reality.
Her eyes widened as she pulled back her hand quickly, sitting up while also putting some space in between the two of them as rapid questions began to fill her head which she ended up getting trapped into.
What happened last night…? Why is he still here? ...What does this mean about us?
Feeling the sudden jolt of movement Victor stirred awake, his eyes fluttering open to adjust to the brightness of the room before looking around and instantly stopping on Cassandra who seemed distraught and trapped in her thoughts.
His gaze softened as he slowly moved to gently grab her hand, which seemed to pull her out of her tangled thoughts.
"Hey…" He spoke, his voice coming out soft and gruff. The tone of his voice filled with sleepiness as he tried to get her attention.
Cassie took a short breath as she stared at their hands before looking at him, seeing him gaze at her with a soft and sleepy expression filled her aching heart with so much admiration and love for him she nearly melted on the spot.
"Good morning sleepyhead." She spoke after a moment, giving him a small smile. Trying to mask away the lost and confused look on her face.
"Good morning…" He gave her a smile acting as though he didn't just see her panic and get lost in her thoughts, but he knew her. He knew she would try to hide the questions she wanted to ask. And he knew she would be questioning their situation after waking up in bed together considering their conversation the night before.
A moment of silence passed before he spoke again, "You're questioning everything in that head of yours, aren't you?"
She looked away, letting out the breath she was holding, nodding her head. "Dammit Victor… How did you know???"
He let out a breathy chuckle as he sat up, "I know because I know you. Dummy…"
Hearing him call her a ‘Dummy’ made her heart flutter and her cheeks flush bright red. She used to hate it whenever he called her that but slowly over time, she grew to love it just as she loved him.
Cassie let out a small sigh running her fingers through her hair. Victor stood up from the bed, stretching out his tired limbs before gazing at her softly.
“We can talk about how we should establish our relationship during breakfast. Okay?” She nodded as she stood up herself, feeling a little relieved that he would answer all the thoughts that were running wild within her mind.
The two made their way to the kitchen where Victor began to prepare them a nice breakfast. As he made his way around the spacious kitchen, gathering ingredients, Cassie busied herself by making them some coffee.
It felt like a typical day. Like nothing has changed in the last four months of being apart. While waiting for the coffee to finish brewing, she hopped onto the countertop, sitting idly as she watched Victor.
Only as she watched, it only pulled her further into her thoughts. Getting lost in their past memories that they have shared during the years that they’ve been a couple. Waking up beside him, having breakfast, going to work together, having dinner together whether it be at home or at Souvenir, talking about anything and everything with one another and falling asleep beside him
She enjoyed all of it… And she couldn’t deny the fact that she truly missed him. It was hard enough when she left Loveland. Having to leave behind the place where she found her true love. It was painful for sure…
It only confirmed one thing in her mind.
She loves him. She wants to be with him.
She could care less of what the world would think of her, dating one of the most eligible bachelors in Loveland… was a blessing. A blessing she doesn’t want to let go of so easily.
“Cassie.” Victor’s soft voice broke her out of her thought process, she looked up, seeing him standing right in front of her.
“Sorry… What were you saying?”
“I was saying, breakfast is ready. Dummy… What were you thinking about so intensely?” He questioned. Cassie shook her head, giving him a smile. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
She hopped off of the counter and made her way to the table, where the delicious breakfast was laid out for the two of them. The sweet aroma of fresh pancakes and maple syrup filled the kitchen.
The smile on Cassie’s face grew as she sat herself down, admiring the delicious meal in front of her before taking the first bite. As always it tastes just as appealing as it looks. The combination of the pancakes with freshly washed berries was heavenly.
Oh how she had missed his cooking.
She let out a pleased hum. Victor gazed at her the entire time, the corners of his lips rising into a small smile.
“Thank you for this, Victor. It is so good.” She beamed after a few bites into the meal. He let out a chuckle.
“I’m glad you like it.” After a moment, he spoke once again. “We should probably discuss our situation Cassie…”
Cassie paused for a moment before setting the utensil down, nodding. “Yeah.. we should…”
Silence.. Deadly silence.
How should they even begin to discuss this…?
Cassie decided to break the ice by speaking first, she gently grabbed his hand, as she gazed into his periwinkle eyes.
“Victor… I... “ She took a deep breath as she spoke more firmly. “I still love you. More than anything and anybody else in this world… and I want to be with you again.”
“The past four months have been difficult without you. It feels like something was missing in my life and I didn’t know how to cope with that loss. I missed you so much and when our anniversary came around it only made me miss you more…”
“I don’t care about the rumors anymore, I don’t care about anything others say about me. All I care about is you. It has always been you. And I don’t want to let anybody or anything get in the way of how I feel for you... “
“ But the question I want to know is if you still want to be with me… and if you want to try this relationship again…”
Victor stared deeply into her crystal blue eyes, listening intently to her words, he gently squeezed her hand as he held it. The small smile on his face suddenly grew wider. He let out a small chuckle.
“Dummy… Do I have to spell it out for you? Of course I want to be with you. I wouldn’t be here still if I didn’t. It has always been you. I never stopped loving you and I never will. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
He moved his hand from hers, to her cheek, gently caressing her smooth skin. Cassie leaned into his touch, letting out a soft sigh of contentment.
“I never want to be away from you ever again…” He spoke, leaning closer to her, resting his forehead against hers.
“So… will you be mine again?” His voice came out in a soft whisper. She smiled at him as she knew her answer, she didn’t have to say it out loud for him to get it. She just leaned in closer, capturing his lips in a soft kiss. One in which he reciprocated and melted into.
“Yes…”

Hopeful Promise
AO3
I was going to post the fanfiction.net link as well but right now fanfiction.net is not cooperating with me! I’ll post it later, I apologize.
Anyway, good evening lovebugs! I apologize I that what I am presenting is just a oneshot again.
This is one is one of the WIPs I posted, where Marinette and Luka have a romantic picnic and Luka wants to ask Marinette something......
Yeah I am still not giving the context for that just read it and find out.
Enjoy! <3
~~~~~
Luka wondered if it would be too much to introduce the idea to her.
His girlfriend Marinette was prone to panic, but this question has been eating at him even if it was a bit of a bold question to ask when they were still teenagers.
But he just held that thought as the two of them found a picnic table by the flowers. Marinette smiled at him as she opened up the picnic basket and cut croissants in half. She spread cream cheese on both slices and placed blueberries on one slice, and sliced strawberries on the other.
Luka smiled in anticipation. Marinette was about to hand the blueberry slice to Luka. But he took both slices and placed them together before taking a huge bite. He gave pleased noises from the sweetness of the berries and the freshly made croissant.
"Hey! We were supposed to share that!" Marinette teased.
"Sorry," Luka said before wiping berry juice from the corner of his lips. "It tastes so good."
Luka handed the sandwich back to Marinette, and she took a bite herself. Giving multiple pleased moans as she wanted to eat the rest.
After the two of them finished lunch, Luka wiped the last bit of berry juice from Marinette's lips before sucking it off his own fingers.
"That was an amazing lunch melody," Luka said, smiling at her.
Marinette grinned. "Anything for you, Luka."
Anything.
It was at this moment that Luka knew she loved him as much as he loved her. And that made his heart feel so strong. But they were still so young.
The blue-haired boy reasoned with himself to just place that question on the back of his mind for now. He grabbed his guitar before climbing over the picnic table to sit next to Marinette. Luka played gentle tunes as Marinette rested on his side.
God, Marinette's gentle body against his, causing his heart to beat faster and his guitar playing to be more passionate. Whether or not he asked her, he certainly knew his own answer.
"Is something on your mind?" Marinette asked.
Luka lost his tune for a moment. Then, he paused his guitar playing because he had to admit he was a bit nervous right now. Even if he was usually considered the calm and collective person in their friend group.
"Nothing in particular," Luka lied.
Marinette paused before turning to her boyfriend, and her bluebell eyes looked right through him. Beautiful bluebell eyes like a gentle lagoon on a starlit evening.
Luka continued to play that gentle tune to calm his nerves.
"I was thinking about," Luka paused as he tried to keep up his tempo. "How it's a beautiful day today and how I am happy to be spending time with the most amazing girlfriend in the world."
Marinette smiled, but she didn't seem very convinced.
"And I am going to be dreaming about delicious fruit croissant sandwiches for the next few days," Luka added.
Marinette gave a pleased hum. "You always know how to compliment me."
Marinette gave a devious smirk and booped his nose for a moment, causing Luka to smile. Yes, she was charmed by Luka's energy, but she knew he was stretching the truth a bit.
But Marinette let him be as she laid beside him and relaxed to his soft tunes while lacing some flowers together. When she finished, she took a moment to sit up and tie them around Luka's neck.
He smiled, thinking about how she was always sweet and giving.
Little did she know she had a question weighing on her mind as well.
"Luka…"
Luka's aquamarine eyes shined at her. Something that still made Marinette blush rose-red even though they were long past the honeymoon phase of their relationship.
"Yes, Marinette?" He set his guitar down for a moment as he loved hearing her voice much more than any instrument.
Marinette smiled sheepishly and placed her hand on the back of her neck, automatically feeling that she was sweating.
"Well, we have been dating for a while, and…."
Luka waited for her to collect herself, but Marinette still felt so nervous.
"I was going to ask you something crazy," Marinette said.
Luka gave her a calming smile. "I doubt what you have to say is crazy, Marinette."
Marinette blinked. "It is! Because we are still teenagers and…."
She suddenly felt her words stop. Marinette gave a soft sigh as if she gave up.
Luka breathed out and felt he should reveal what he wanted to ask her. Maybe it would make her feel less crazy. He was still a bit worried Marinette would be turned off by the idea, but if this idea was eating at him for, a while he should let it out. If it really was a bad idea, his gut would tell him not to.
He placed his hand under her chin and raised her head up to meet hers.
"I wanted to tell you something too," Luka said as Marinette's bluebell eyes widened. "But," he paused from his voice shaking a bit. "I am a bit nervous…."
It clicked for Marinette that he was about to tell her what he was hiding before. Marinette moved closer to him.
"Don't be nervous!" Marinette insisted. "I want to know!"
Luka chuckled to himself as his hand dug through his jacket pocket.
"I am afraid you might be a bit overwhelmed," he said gently.
Marinette knew she was prone to panic, no one had to tell her that twice, and Luka always made her feel comfortable and stable. She took his free hand with hers.
"You can tell me anything too, Luka!" Marinette cried, her eyes showing him that she was serious. "You always know what to say."
Now Luka suddenly felt at ease as he squeezed her hand and moved closer to her, so they were leaning against each other as if they sat in a love seat.
"I'll tell you," Luka said.
Marinette rested herself against Luka's shoulder as they sat in silence for a moment before Luka spoke.
"Well, we've been together for a long time, and I couldn't be happier," Luka said.
Marinette gently nuzzled herself against him. "I couldn't either! You're the best boyfriend ever, Luka!"
That was a relief for Luka to hear.
"But for the past few weeks, I couldn't help but think…."
"Hm?" Marinette raised her head to meet Luka's eyes. Her blue eyes sparkled to him, deep in curiosity.
"That maybe in the future…." Luka's face started heating up. Marinette squeezed his hand as if she was eager to know what he had to convey.
Luka breathed out as he tried to compose himself but looking at his beautiful girlfriend now, he smiled at her without a single doubt in his mind.
"I love you, Marinette," he said firmly. "And there is not a single doubt in my mind about that. But for the past few weeks, I couldn't help but think it would be absolutely amazing if we…." He dug into his pocket again.
"If we got married someday in the future."
On the one hand, Luka was relieved he freed that burning idea. But now, he started to question if he was a weirdo hopeless romantic.
But Marinette's mouth went slightly agape before she placed her hand over her chest and smiled warmly.
Luka guessed she wasn't upset at all, but she said nothing and dug through her backpack to pull out her sketchbook.
"I was a bit nervous because of what you were hiding," Marinette said as she held her closed sketchbook in her hands and leaned against her boyfriend. "But…"
She opened up her sketchbook, and Luka saw drawings of the two of them in adorable chibi anime style and wearing wedding attire. There were also the words "Marinette + Luka Together Forever" written in cursive.
Luka held the other side of the sketchbook. A pleased smile was on his face that made Marinette feel relieved.
"Alya and Kagami teased me again this as if they don't fantasize about marrying their own boyfriends!" Marinette cried.
Marinette retook Luka's hand and blushed bashfully, thinking about what could be in the future.
"But the point is," Marinette's face glowed brighter red. "I would love to marry you someday, Luka."
Her voice made a slight squeak saying that last part, but Luka adored that.
Marinette couldn't help but giggle next.
"It's funny how we both thought the same thing. I'm not an insane hopeless romantic!" Marinette cried.
Luka wrapped his arm around her and held her close to where she could faintly hear his heartbeat like a soft metronome.
"Kind of makes me believe that the both of us are made for each other, and we will get married when the time is right," There were hopeful notes in Marinette's words.
"I'm glad you agree, Marinette," Luka said. Marinette just wanted to rest by her boyfriend's side for the rest of the day, feeling secure for the future.
"Because I got you this."
Marinette turned and managed to stifle her yelp at the sight of Luka smiling down on her and holding a ring with a pink heart-shaped jewel on it.
"Luka!" Marinette cried. "You…" She became breathless.
Luka held her closer. "It's just a promise ring. I thought it suited you."
Marinette released herself from Luka's hold and gave him a slightly stern look.
"Luka, I told you you don't have to buy me expensive things."
Luka smiled. "I know, I saved up for this."
"You're more than worth it, though," He said as he moved the ring closer to her.
Marinette looked at the ring for a good moment. It was absolutely gorgeous and priceless, and Marinette almost felt she wasn't worthy of such a romantic gift. Not to mention all the money Luka put in for her, so she couldn't bring herself to accept the ring.
But then Marinette thought, this boy truly was ride and die for her. Even willing to buy expensive, flashy stuff to show how serious he was about them. And this was a dream come true for Marinette. No, more beautiful than any other dream she ever dreamt.
And she loved him. Her concerned expression melted as her heart skipped a beat, thinking how much Luka believed in what they had.
She smiled as she presented her finger, and Luka placed the promise ring on her.
Marinette was in awe, looking at the small diamond that was now wrapped around her. She just felt so lucky being loved this much, and she almost wanted to show it off to all her friends as if it were an actual engagement ring.
But she turned to Luka, who gave her his usual "I love you" face. Everything he did reminded her that she was loved.
"I love you, Luka."
Luka's aquamarine eyes shined like the sea, and his smile was as warm as sunlight.
"I love you too, Marinette."
Marinette moved in closer, so she sat on his lap and hugged him while resting her head on his broad chest. Luka gently hugged her as well, and they stayed in blissful silence for a moment.
Then Marinette broke the hug and eagerly jumped off the picnic table to pack up the picnic basket.
"Luka, let's go get ice cream."
Luka had to admit that sharing Andre's ice cream did seem perfect after he and Marinette made a promise. And he was craving more sweet stuff.
"Sure, Marinette."
Luka placed his guitar in his guitar case, and the two of them walked hand and hand.
But feeling Marinette's ring on her finger gave Luka even more blissful daydreams of a beautiful future together.
13 Days 13 Fanfics | Counting down Albedo’s Birthday
Pairing : Albedo x GN! Reader
Genre : Fluff | Established relationship
Warning : None
Word count : 1,699 words
note : I can die peacefully now, I believe the entire family can hear me screaming. Day 13 will be based on Albedo's mail. I suck at kissing btw, sooo I tried
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 12 Moment of Birth Part 1: Midnight
Light from houses in the city of freedom starting to turn into darkness; but not all, liveliest place in the slumbering city in the lake still filled with drunkards and music from the bard. Angel share, is night-active with drinks and socializing drinkers.
You have a meeting with your friends to discuss what to give Albedo for his birthday, Although..
“You guys seriously haven’t kissed yet? It’s been nearly a year”
things seemed going in the completely wrong direction “Shhh quiet please, Captain Kaeya. It’s not a big deal, I understand he wanted to take things slow” Still, there are times where you yearn for more than hugs and pecks on your face.
“Our Chief Alchemist has really taken your advice Too well, Kaeya” Lady in purple attire and a large witch hat, decorated with roses spoke up “That little genius never opened up for this sort of relationship” eyepatch man took another gulp to his mouth “I’m still surprised you managed to make him fall for you”
“Kaeya, rude” lightly zapped the one-eyed captain before turning to you “If he doesn’t make the first step, you’d need to do it” she placed her finger on your lips “Alright, alright, stop everyone” you harsh your friends before things getting out of hand “I just wanted a piece of advice on what to give Albedo for his birthday, so how did this turned to-“ Yup, that sparked your idea.
Both Knights of Favonius glanced at each other then back to you “Do you still need our help?”
The following morning you knocked on the Acting Grand Master’s room “Come in” an assertive voice flew out from the wooden door “Good morning, Master Jean. Do you know where Klee is?” “Good morning, I think she’s by the lake near Wolvendom. Oh and if you’re going to meet her, please make sure she doesn’t explode all the fish” she spoke without looking at you, eyes on massive amounts of paperwork
“One other thing, Acting Grand Master. I would be greatly appreciated if you kindly grant Albedo’s leave on his birthday” you figured your boyfriend might need a day off, in case he wanted to spend time with you and Klee “Oh right, his birthday is approaching” she glanced at the calendar “Yes of course, please do send him my regards if I couldn’t inform him myself” Closing the door after thanking her, ‘alright, off to Wolvendom’ you recalled your plan
Explosions can be heard from afar, the little girl should be nearby. Fish flying out in the sky, big splash easily visible. A small girl in red clothing having fun tossing bombs into stilled water. You called for her and she turned around “Y/N! Klee missed you” red coat sprinting to you, hugging you as soon as you’re in her reach By now she sees you as another sibling, despite you’re actually dating her brother. “Having fun today mh Klee?” glancing at the amount of dead fish on the ground “Yup! The kind uncle at the fishing asso..asso..” “Fishing association?” “Yes! the fishing association told Klee there’s a bunch of new fish all over Mondstadt, Klee will blast them all” You know fishing normally is better for the fish, but you let it slide for her happiness “Hey Klee, I have to borrow your brother the day before his birthday; well, tomorrow, is that alright?” You crouch down to the little girl’s height “Aw, but Klee wanted to be with big brother Albedo..” “I know Klee, but by that time you would be asleep. Would you like to help me prepare snacks for Albedo then?” “Yayy, Klee wanna help!” “Alright, keep it between us m’kay?” Holding out a pinky finger for the young one to hook with hers
‘And to keep Albedo busy..’ You head to the fountain plaza to one of your boyfriend’s assistants, Timaeus. “Morning Timaeus, do you know where Sucrose is?” A bit weird to start a conversation about her, since you and Sucrose don’t really get along “Sucrose? I’m not sure. Do you want me to help find her?” “No, no no no, uh, Timaeus, I need you to help distract Albedo tomorrow, mild difficulty experiment, anything” “Is that all? All Right” Scholar alchemist agreed to lend you a hand “Thanks, Timaeus”
    You headed off to your next destination ‘Alright, time for a hard part’ the last part of your plan is rather hard, you wondered if he gonna help you
“Mark it as done!” wow that was.. easy, perhaps it’s because of three high-quality bottles of wine in his hands. You asked.. or rather, hired anemo bard to play songs for the night and extra requested to let the wind carry the song to you.
In the evening, you have scouted the area you wanted to give the alchemist your gift and found the perfect place. An area where you can see both the city of freedom and the icy summit, high enough for the gentle breeze to flow, beautifully decorated with flowers and greenery. Starsnatch cliff, also the home of the flower which held meaning, the truest feelings of prodigal son, Cecilia.
The next day everything went according to plan. Light meal fully prepared with the help of the pyro girl, Timaeus kept Albedo busy so he couldn’t come home and caught you and Klee in action.
Quite late night when you knocked on Alice’s door, the blonde, still in his usual attire opened to greet the unknown guests. “Y/N? What are you doing here this late hour?” Judging from the angle of the moon, it's around 9-10 PM “Hey, what about me?” eyepatch covering male’s hand and he placed his elbow on the opened door, the alchemist only nodded to his presence “Evening Bedo, I would like to show you something, could you come with me please?” you don’t normally use the formal language after being with him for so long. He can sense your shyness from the way you speak and your body language “I’d love to go but Klee..”
You pointed to the man behind you “Don’t worry about little Klee, just go enjoy your time” he basically dragged the alchemist out of his house
Chitchat along the way, fingers intertwined with his “Not sleepy yet aren’t you?” you bent down and look at him in the eyes “Not at all, I’m rather excited about what you prepared for me” giggled to his answer “Good, 'cause the night is still young!” you have reached your destination, Large fabric covering the grassy ground, a basket filled with snacks lies atop, along with a flower vase to decorate the scenery. Log of wood has bags and books resting against it. The wind bringing the scent of white flowers and the tune of the harp. Moon and star shining bright, needlessly of other light sources.
“Didn’t know you had anything romantic in mind” he teased your boldness “..well, what do you think?” hiding your embarrassment and teases the alchemist back
Sitting down to the location you prepared, he started to examine the scene “There’s no musician nearby, nor to any instruments.. Am I the only one hearing the melody?” Trying to find a scientific explanation for a strange event “The wind carries messages. Was music not a kind of message too?” He wrapped his arms around your waist, drowning in the love you gave him
“Enjoying it hmm? Here, I prepared some light food for us” slowly getting plates and snacks out from the weaved basket, the fabric is soon filled with various types of dishes "You’re not gonna sit on your seat?” his arms tightened, head bury to your shoulder “..I don't want to move” it’s rare seeing him clingy to you like this “you’re adorable you know” finally commented on his action
“We got your favorite,” one of your dishes has turned to Albedo’s favorite “These are canapés, I chose bread base, topped with different types of savory” bite-sized dishes, you know he prefers smaller portions
Pointing to each topping one by one, explaining what each one is made of. In his eyes, you’re like a professional chef
“Bedo, check this one out” you pulled out Fisherman’s toast with clover ketchup, onions, cheese, and heart-shaped parleys “..Fish-Flavored Toast, Klee’s specialty. You’re so thoughtful, I have to thank her later” he pecked your cheek, definitely in love
“And we got desserts- after savory alright Bedo?” His hand was already reaching for the dish, you have to stop his fast hand Brownies, Berry Mille-Feuille, and a jar of chocolate chip cookies are all making him drool “Shall we dig in?” He suggested, perhaps the desserts engaging him.
Your hypothesis was turned down after seeing him having a high appetite for savory, you figured he actually wanted to savor your cooking
Hours passed and you both are finally full, cuddling against the wooden log, enjoying the melody floating in the air. His platinum hair reflects the elegant moonlight, half-lidded eyes resting against your neck, handheld on yours. You looked up in the sky- its almost time
“Albedo?” He replied with a sweet hum, glancing up at you “Do you know what day is tomorrow?” “..my birthday. but I still don’t understand why you chose to celebrate it tonight” “Wouldn’t be nicer to receive a gift directly after the clock strikes midnight?” Lifted his chin to face you, he’s so close to you, closer than usual
Both yours and his cheek painted rosy, he cupped your face and look deeply into your eyes. “was all this not my birthday gifts?” “nope.. would you like to find out what it is?”
Moon motions overhead, the clock strikes midnight, soft breeze touched exposed skin, the sound of the harp soaring in the sky. stars as the witness, Cecilia as the oath, feelings as vow sealed between the two bodies.
Hand slide by the side of his neck, placing on the backside and pulled him closer, half-lidded eyes slowly closed, chest-pounding hard, tilted your head to the side a little-
sweet lips finally placed on his loving ones, passionated and full of affection, butterflies flying in your stomach. After a while, you break the timeless kiss
“Happy birthday my beloved Albedo”
May I request a one shot with Avery taking the daughter of Mustard and Honey on a moonlight date? Bonus points if you include Avery making his girlfriend fly with his powers and her enjoying it.
Okay so I haven't played the DLC but I love Avery and really wanted to write for him so forgive me if he’s OOC I'm basing him on things I have read for him. Without further ado please enjoy! ~Rose
Your parent were pretty excited when they found out you had gotten into a relationship even more so when they met the boy you were with. Though a bit odd and out there it was clear that he truly cared about you and you him so as long as he made their daughter happy they had no problem with you being together. When you had come to your mom about an outfit to wear for you date in an hour she was more then happy to help and with the finale touches she led you out the door with a kiss to the forehead and a wish of a lovely night.
You had arrive at the meeting spot a few minutes early to find Avery already waiting, lighting a few candles. “Aww Avery did you set all this up for us”. He turns a small smile gracing his face as he pulls himself up fully and walking over. “Why yes I did my dear” He leans down and presses a soft kiss to my cheek before leading me over to the blanket he set out. A perfect view of the bright moon the sounds and sights of the wild Pokémon that roam free not far from us. As we settle on to the blanket together he hands me a cup of berry juice showing me the fresh fruit and sweet deserts he got for us.
We had been there for at least an hour now maybe longer when the thought popped up. I knew of Avery’s powers of course who didn’t and I loved seeing him use them. It was his element in more ways then one and when he used them everything seemed even brighter around him. “could you...could you make me float with you powers”? it slipped out before I could stop it my face heated up when I realized I couldn’t just take it back. Yet my worries were unfunded as he chuckled standing up with a bounce to his step and holding his hand out for me to take. He helped pull me to my feet giving me a slight twirl before stepping away “Do you truly want me to use my powers”? I smiled “ Of course I want to know what it like besides I trust you not to hurt me even a little” He seem to like that answer standing straight he took a breath and I closed my eyes waiting for my feet to lift.
The feeling of physic power wrapping around you isn’t one I could put into words but I felt safe and as he guided me under the moon I felt like a queen. The water and rolling hills beneath me were a beautiful sight to see one I knew I would remember for a life time, as I flew over it with Avery happily watching and keeping me up the whole time. When I touched the ground again I rushed to him giving him a kiss and smiling my hands cradling his face. “ I'm glad you enjoyed that dear now I believe it time we head back its getting chilly and I hate for either of us to get sick”. I nodded helping him pack up before taking his hand as we walked back and under the sea of stars I knew this is what I wanted and right now I couldn’t be happier.
Yay hope this was good I tried something slightly different and I kinda like it but not fully sure let me know what you think and Thanks for reading! ~Rose
Request!!!
Hey you guys! Some of y’all have sent in requests which I am really flattered that you enjoy my writing and I am honestly SO excited to do these!  here is the first one that someone gave me and I really hope you enjoy it!!!  Also if you sent one and I haven’t responded, know that I have seen it, it just will not allow me to message you privately about it just publicly.  Anyway here is the first for @welcome-to-americanawritings !  I crossed some of it out so there wouldn’t be any spoilers for those who don’t know what it is about.
Tumblr media
I love you, I hate you- Part 1
“Babe wake up,” I feel my sexy boyfriend nudge me speaking in his smooth English voice, “It’s time to start the day,”
My eyes slowly open and I yawn tired, “uhhh it’s 9am can’t we sleep in a little longer?” I groan.
“Get up y/n, the lost boys have already begun getting breakfast together I let you sleep in an extra hour,” he tells me a bit more serious.
“Come ere,” I tell him and he sits close to me as I start sitting up. I roll on top of him and start kissing him.
“Y/n, stop it we have to get going,” he tells me but I continue.
“Come on it doesn’t have to be long, you know you want it,” I tell him as I continue.
I feel his body start giving into it and move my hand down to his cock and begin stroking it slowly, “Okay just 10 minutes though,” he tells me.
He starts kissing me back as his dick hardens in my hand and he rolls on top me as our skin tangles.  He starts taking his pants off and I lift up my night gown and take my panties off.  I feel his hand on my pussy as he rubs it and I can tell we want each other.  Our physical chemistry is always the best.  I feel him put his large hard dick inside me and he begins kissing my neck as I lay my cheek on the pillow.  He thrusts harder each time and I can tell we are both starting to get close.  After a thrust he cums in me and I do it with him both of us moaning.
“Do we have to go out?  We could just do more of that all day” I smirk hugging him.
“Y/n, everyone has to do there part and that includes you,” he tells me.
“I’m your girlfriend, that should give me some ability to not follow everything that is supposed to happen? Besides the obvious that comes with being yours in physical and romantic ways of course,” I ask and bat my eyes.
“You get special treatment all the time,” he tells me and I sigh knowing he is right.
I get up and change into gray leggings and a green tank top and boots and go out to where all the lost boys are.
They all have already helped themselves but it’s fine because at least they aren’t rude about me not preparing it all. I get a plate and help myself to what I want. I sit next to Lee who was one of the newest lost boys here on the island that lots of the guys have been avoiding so I’ve been trying to make him feel more welcome. I smile and ask him how he is with adjusting and everything.
After we are done eating I help clean up. It’s the least I can do since I didn’t help in the morning.
Afterwards Pan announces that we will be doing target practice.  What this is is practice shooting arrows which is pretty straight forward.  If we want to take it up a notch we can put apples on our heads and have someone shoot it.  We all grab our apple and dip the tip of our arrows in dream shade which is this deadly black liquid that’s found inside thorns of these bushes.  It is insane how quick it can take a life.
I start shooting and hit the apple each time.  A couple times I’m a little off but nothing too bad.  I get bored working alone and start asking others if we can do it the “funner way” as I call it.  Shooting it off the others head.  I know it shouldn’t be more fun but something about risking a life like that is so exhilarating. It’s an extremely adrenaline rush.
A couple people agree who I trust and know are skilled because it would be horrible if someone went just an inch or two lower.  Lee comes over and asks if he can join but we tell him it is too advance for him which is true.  He literally came here knowing nothing about survival instincts.  He never has gone camping or fishing or hunting we are teaching him it all.  Mostly me because none of the other guys are willing to help out.  I feel like I’m mothering him in the ways of Neverland.
I peek over and see him not being able to hit a single apple.  I go over, “You’re gripping the bow too tight,” I critique as I examine his form, “Also you can’t stand like that,” I tell him with his legs pressed together, “You need more of a stance, put your dominant foot in front and non dominant foot a step back.  That’s what I do at least,” I share and watch him readjust himself.
“Th-thanks y/n, it might help more if you show me,” he tells me.  I nod and come up behind him and grab his tight fist and tell him to relax his hand and then I slowly squeeze his to the point he needs and move his feet around kicking them with my foot.  I step back and he tries again and succeeds.
“There you go,” I tell him.
“Thanks y/n, you’re really helpful,” he blushes.
“Anytime,” I smile softly and walk away.
We finish up target practice and as most days we just hang out doing whatever we want. I choose to go to mermaid lagoon to hang out with my friends there. As gentle and sweet as the name sounds it really isn’t. The water is a dark blue and there’s a lot of large dark mossy rocks and not a whole lot of light shines through. I’ve swam in it before and When I tried going to the bottom it lit up this bright glimmery light blue which freaked me out with how much it contrasted the above and I never went in again since. The merpeople are great but the place gives me the creeps a little.
“Y/n!” This mermaid Selena exclaims and swims over to me. She’s always so enthusiastic I love her energy.
Soon a lot of the mermaids swim over to me greeting me, “Hey you guys!” I say.
We start chatting talking about the latest gossip and I tell them about what’s new on my side, “Yeah there’s this new guy who came here last week, Lee. Poor thing he doesn’t know the slightest thing. He’s been needing my help teaching him everything,” I share, “He’s too afraid to ask the others for instruction. I tell them about this morning.
They all start to give me smirks as if there’s something that’s not being said, “Oh honey don’t you see? He likes you!” Alice says.
“Lee? Like me? You’re lying. Anyway I’m happily in a relationship,” I tell them.
“Does Lee know that?” Gwen asks.
“I mean… he should. I haven’t said anything about it to him but that doesn’t mean someone else hasn’t said it. I mean who would want to have Pan so infuriated by hitting or making a move on me?” I comment. They all nod agreeing with me.
“Just watch for the signs,” Selena tells me.
We talk for a while longer and then I head my own way.
I go back to camp where most people are hanging out and I join in. I go and hangout with all the other guys fucking around and doing stupid shit. It gets later and darker and I haven’t seen Pan at all since the morning.
“Has anyone seen Pan today?” I ask. Everyone says no, “I’m gonna go look for him,” I look around. I go in his cave and in his tent he does business in. He isn’t in either of the places. I go in the woods with a flashlight and head to his thinking tree, he goes there when he has to be alone but of course I would never step foot close. No one would. “Pan? Are you out here?” I shout. It’s deadly quiet. I know it means nothing but still I’m really freaked out. I head on back fearing something will come get me for no reason. I know he’s a big boy and can take care of himself though. He would tell me if he were going somewhere so I’m not worried.
I head on back to camp and hang with everyone again drinking and they start playing games with all the alcohol but I know if I have too much I regret it because of stuff that I’ll do or say that is not intentional. Of course no one here knows that because I have been drunk around them yet. I always drink to the point I feel it and then stop.
I watch as everyone else gets wasted making fools of themselves and I wobble off to bed making a somewhat discreet exit as usual. Pan still isn’t there and I start to get worried.
The next day I wake up on time putting on some clothes and yawn exhausted as I stand next to each of the other boys on the end. I hadn’t seen Pan since last morning which is really weird and starting to worry me. Felix comes around and stands in front of us to give orders.
“Where’s Pan?” Someone asks before Felix can open his mouth.
“He has business to attend to. He left last morning and will be back today sometime,” he tells all of us in his flat voice. I swear Felix tries to say as little as possible about everything, he’s so ominous it’s annoying, “Now are we going to talk about Pan or let me say what to do to prepare for breakfast,” half of us roll our eyes.
He sets us off in groups, “Lee, y/n, you two are picking berries,” he tells us plainly as he gives us orders. I get a bit uncomfortable after the mermaids told me about what there thoughts on it all was.
I go over to Felix as everyone disperses, “Is there anyway I could not work with Lee? He’s cool and all it’s just I could use a break from the new guy,” I explain avoiding the real reasoning for how I don’t want to seem like I’m leading him on.
He stares at me with expressionless eyes, “Y/n you have been the only one willing to deal with him. He is not good at anything which is why he has the easiest task there is. No one has patience like you for these sort of things,” he gets stern with me.
“Lee come on let’s go,” I tell him wanting nothing more than to see Pan and hug him. I need to see someone I love right now. I just don’t get why he didn’t tell me he was going on a trip.
He follows me into the woods and I show him where the berries are and which ones are good to eat and which are not. He stays really close the whole time and the awkwardness is kicking in. I watch him do it himself and we head back.
“Hey y/n. Can I ask you something?” He asks me not making anymore distance between us as I inch away some.
“Go ahead what is it?” I answer.
“Why do none of the other lost boys want to be around me? Is it because I’m new or something?” He asks and I don’t know what to say. If I were to be honest and say how he doesn’t know shit about survival instincts that would hurt his feelings terribly. And I’m too nice for that.
“It’s not that they don’t want to be around you. It just takes a while to find your place when you first get to this island. I was the same way but I impressed everyone by-“
“Y/n! Watch out!” Lee pulls me hard to the side by my waist as an arrow shoots through the trees.
I feel weird having his hands there noticing another sign as I was told to lookout for as he doesn’t move them, “Do you mind moving your hands?” I ask. Once they are lowered the awkwardness still lingers on my end but I try to look past it. I lean out and see two guys squatting in a tree with bows, “Really you guys?! You almost killed us!” I yell angry.
“Your bleeding!” One of them shouts and then they duck and head out.
I look and feel a pain in my upper arm and see it got nicked. Luckily they forgot to dip it in dreamshade.
“Ugh! This is a WONDERFUL start to the day!” I exclaim irritated.
“You really should soak that. There’s a river right where the berry bush was,” Lee tells me.
I roll my eyes, “I’m fine I can wrap a bandage just fine when we get back,” I huff and storm back to camp pissed off not paying attention to if Lee is keeping up with me or not.
When I get back I go to the medical hut where there really isn’t much besides bandages. I force my chin down on one half of my forearm as I get the wrap started. I wrap it tighter than I should that my skin squeezes out more than it probably should.
I come out and see that everything is getting started. Knowing Pan comes back today is the only thing that is getting me through. It’s just the annoying anticipation of when he will be here.
Everything gets gathered together and we eat. I hangout with Felix.
“It must be hard, Pan being gone,” he tells me.
“It’s only been a night Felix, I can survive without him, I did all those years leading up to now. I just wish he would have told me why,” I say sighing after the last part.
“I might know why,” he says quietly,“Im not sure why he’s there during the daytime but for the evening I know he’s been wanting to see this girl from London, her name is Wendy,”
the little things
Kenji’s mouth is dry. “Ben…?” he croaks out.
Ben swallows. “Oh,” he says, in a very small voice. “It’s you.”
~*~
Ben’s been reunited with the other campers, and seems to have come out the other end of his experience stronger than ever before. But as he slowly finds his place back within the group, a bigger picture starts to emerge, piece by piece.
Rated T for: mental illness, mild language, panic attacks, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, eating disorder (not in a traditional sense, but definitely not a healthy relationship with food)
A/N: Hey Camp Cretaceous fandom, y’all mind if I uhhhh write six-thousand words about Ben’s trauma?? Basically, Netflix kept recommending the show to me so I watched the first ep out of curiosity and then ended up binging the whole thing in like two days, and now here I am.
(Dear sweet, patient, regular readers of mine: I’m so sorry my main fic’s been delayed but I promise it’s getting updated next week, I just had to get some feelings out about Sad Dino Boy)
Hope you enjoy, please reblog and leave a comment if you do! - Aqua
the little things
~*~
Ben Pincus has returned from the dead, and he’s never been better.
The other campers are amazed. What he’s been through must have been horrible. He thought he was the only one left, that there was no one to help him and no hope of rescue because he was presumed dead. It would’ve been enough to drive anyone into despair, or off of the deep end.
But Ben shows no signs of this.
They didn’t find him holed up somewhere, near starvation and waiting to die, like one might’ve expected. They didn’t find him at all, really. He found them, and by coming to their rescue, no less. And when he did, he wasn’t a trembling mess, he wasn’t a half-mad ball of paranoia, and he wasn’t a hollow-eyed skeleton fueled solely by desperation.
He’s an all new and improved Ben, the best version of himself.
He hasn’t just survived, he’s flourished. He’s brave, he’s confident, he’s capable. He gives his opinions freely and without second-guessing himself, suggesting things the old Ben would’ve recoiled at. He fits seamlessly into the team like he never left. He faces problems head-on with determination and grit and not a trace of fear.
The turnaround is unbelievable. But even more important is that while he’s a new and improved Ben, he’s retained all the best parts of his old self.
Ben is easy smiles and meticulous organization of a leather waist bag and doting affection for a four-ton armored lizard. He’s sensitive and soft-spoken and accepts hugs from his friends gratefully. He still can’t quite pull off coolness, with a voice that sounds as gangly as his limbs look and an awkwardness he hasn’t grown out of.
And it’s perhaps because of this that no one thinks to look closer. This image is an easy thing to accept because it’s what they all want to believe, that Ben is okay- in fact, better than okay. But the truth is not always big and obvious upon first glance.
It’s the little things, as they soon find out.
~*~
That first evening after Ben’s return, after Mitch and Tiff and everything else, they don’t eat dinner.
They all ate their fill at the campsite and, after a month of scarcity, it was more than enough to sate their appetites. It’s Darius who thinks to ask Ben if he’s hungry, remembering that the boy hadn’t had the chance to eat with them. They have a good stockpile of food at the moment and he figures Ben must’ve been struggling.
But Ben shakes his head with an easy smile, and says, “Nah, I ate earlier.”
Darius leaves it at that, because there’s still so much catching up to do. They show Ben around their clubhouse, make plans for where to build a bunk for him (he insists he’d be just fine sleeping on the ground next to Bumpy, but they all veto that immediately). They talk well into the night about the day’s crazy events, filling each other in on their own sides of the story, and everything that’s happened since Ben got separated.
There are some more tears, some more hugs. But ultimately, the mood in the clubhouse is ecstatic. They never thought Ben had survived the fall so to have him back is better than a dream come true, it’s a miracle.
Darius thought he knew what it was to experience a miracle when they first saw that bonfire smoke on the horizon. But if he had to chose between the miracle of them finally leaving the island or the miracle of getting Ben back, it’s not even a competition.
Eventually the exhaustion catches up with everyone, and they turn in for the night. Bumpy parks herself underneath the clubhouse, her presence incredibly reassuring. Ben ends up sharing Kenji’s bunk because it’s bigger than Darius’s even when occupied by two, and the older teen had insisted in a very faux-casual way, to which Ben had rolled his eyes but nonetheless seemed touched by the gesture.
Darius takes the first night watch shift and gets to see all his friends sleeping peacefully. And even though Tiff sailed away with their only means for escaping, he feels a lot more hopeful than he has in a long time.
~*~
It’s canned peaches for breakfast.
A far cry from yesterday’s buffet. But no one’s complaining because the meticulous rationing of their food, courtesy of Darius, means they’re all starving by meal time and couldn’t care less what it tastes like. Darius is in the process of separating the food out into bowls, half a can for each of them, when he realizes Ben has yet to take a seat. He’s lingering at the edge of the room, watching.
“Hey,” Darius calls, “you coming or what?”
Ben shakes his head. “Thanks, but I already got my own breakfast.”
Before Darius can respond, Brooklynn shoots Ben a look. “What? Where?” she demands. “You holding out on us, jungle boy?”
Darius shoots her a look, but Ben just gives an easy smile and unzips the leather pouch that’s reclaimed its spot around his waist. He withdraws a small handful of bright red berries, no bigger than blueberries. It’s not even a fraction of the half-can of peaches the rest of them are settling for, and Darius sees his own unease reflected in the others’ eyes.
Brooklynn glances away. “Oh. Um, sorry. You don’t… you can have some of ours, you know?”
“I’m good.” Ben tosses a couple berries into his mouth. “You guys go ahead, I’m gonna go check on Bumpy.”
“O- oh, okay…” Sammy murmurs, watching Ben go with uncertain eyes. “If you’re sure…”
They’re silent for a moment.
Kenji inhales quietly through his teeth. “So… that’s weird, right?”
Yaz leans forward in her seat. “What do you think, Darius?” she asks lowly.
Darius bites his lip. Even though dinosaurs are his specific topic of interest, he’s gained a lot of second-hand knowledge about general biology and psychology. After all, he has to understand the processes behind behavior in order to identify patterns and deviations.
And right now, he has to admit that Ben is displaying a very concerning behavior.
“I’ll talk to him,” Darius decides.
There’s a collective sigh of relief around the table, and the others start eating. It takes Darius longer than usual to finish his serving.
~*~
“So, uh, bottom line is… you don’t need to feel bad about eating our food. You’re as much a part of this group as anyone else, and we’re happy to share.”
After a couple tense days, Darius is finally talking to Ben about the food situation. Or rather, talking at him. Because Ben’s not looking at Darius- his eyes are tracking the small spider that’s crawling along the railing next to them. Normally, Darius would take it as a sign of boredom and inattentiveness. But there’s an intensity in Ben’s eye that’s a little unsettling-
Quick as a flash, Ben shoots out an arm. He crushes the spider under his thumb and swipes it into his mouth. And then, untroubled as can be, he returns his focus to Darius as if nothing had happened.
Darius has overheard Kenji teasing Ben about eating bugs, and Ben has admitted as much in the stories of his time alone. Berries and grubs were what he lived on. Darius, for one, can’t imagine being hungry and desperate enough to snatch a bug off the ground and eat it.
But it’s even harder to imagine having access to real food, good food, and still choosing to eat bugs.
“Don’t worry so much,” Ben says lightly, patting Darius on the shoulder as he turns to go. “I can take care of myself.”
That does it. “You can’t keep living off berries and grubs!” Darius finally snaps.
Ben whirls around. “Says who?”
“Basic human biology!” Darius retorts.
Ben glares at him, but there’s something shaky behind it. “Darius, I told you it’s fine,” he says evenly, though he doesn’t fully meet Darius’s gaze. “Don’t make a big deal out of it. Please? If I’m hungry, I’ll eat.”
Darius hesitates. “You promise?”
Ben breaks into an easy smile. “I promise.”
Darius sighs. It’ll have to be good enough, for now.
“Okay.”
~*~
Darius knows he isn’t the only one still concerned by Ben’s lack of appetite.
Right from the start, Ben was the scrawniest one among them, and it’s only gotten worse. But surely he’ll have to eat at some point, right? Basic survival instincts will win out over whatever stubborn mindset is holding him back. Plus, it’s clear that he’s got enough energy to run and climb and stuff with no problem.
Maybe it’s not as serious as Darius thinks. Maybe Ben just needs time.
~*~
Ben doesn’t know what’s wrong with him.
He just- he can’t take their food! Why don’t they get that?
And it’s not because he’s stubborn, it’s not- no matter what Darius thinks. There’s nothing wrong with letting others help you (as long as you don’t let it make you soft, of course). After all, he relies on Bumpy. He just… when he looks at the food, and imagines eating it, he just knows it’ll sit in his stomach. Like a rock, weighing him down.
Plus, plus, if he gets used to eating like that, it’ll just- it’ll be harder to cope once it runs out. He’s already gotten used to roughing it and it was hard enough the first time, he can’t let himself slip back into complacency. And- and really, how long do they think it’s going to last? They’ve searched all the previously inhabited areas of the island and there’s no more food for them to scavenge.
Do they think they’ll be rescued before it runs out? No one is coming to save them. They know it as much as Ben does- they wouldn’t be bothering with rafts if they didn’t. Do they think they’ll escape, then? Sure, because their current attempts have been going so well.
No, they just aren’t thinking long term. Ben is.
There’s nothing wrong with that.
~*~
It’s the sixth day in a row where Ben eats nothing but berries.
He wants to search around some more, see if there’s anything more substantial. That would require him to leave Bumpy, though. And he can’t leave Bumpy. But the hunger is excruciating. It gnaws at him every waking moment, keeps him up at night. He’s never felt such hunger in his life, not even close. He can’t keep going like this, can he?
But there’s nothing else.
Except… something’s crawling up his arm. Something small, and leggy. Ben turns his head, squinting to focus his eyes in the dark. It’s some kind of beetle, with a shiny shell that catches stray shafts of moonlight poking through the roof of his lean-to.
Ben stares at it for a moment. Then, before he can think, he snatches it up and pops it into his mouth. He barely registers any taste, mostly just the crunchy texture. And even though it wasn’t any bigger than a quarter, after he swallows, he feels… fuller. Even if it’s purely imagined, it’s a comfort.
Berries and grubs. It’ll have to be enough.
There’s nothing else.
~*~
Ben continues to decline their offers of food.
~*~
A few weeks after the reunion, Kenji is starting to get antsy.
As the self-designated ‘pro-fun police’ (a clever play on ‘no-fun police,’ if Kenji does say so himself), he’s made it his responsibility to make sure none of his friends just keel over and die from stress one day. That means it’s his job- no, his duty- to lighten the mood with copious amounts of joking, goofing off, and, of course, pranking.
Jumping out to scare his friends while they’re trapped on a dino-infested island might, on paper, sound like a bad idea. But it keeps everyone on their toes, and the relief of realizing they aren’t facing a dino attack, just Kenji pulling a prank, helps keep any real anger at bay. It’s typically an exasperated annoyance, which Kenji will gladly take. His main targets are Brooklynn and Darius, because he can’t fathom doing that to Sammy, and Yaz is- while perhaps in the most need of lightening up- super freaking scary.
But now that Ben’s back, Kenji knows what he has to do.
Before, back when they were just campers and not survivors, Ben was easily the most frightened of them. The kid was scared of dirt. And his over-the-top hysterics always managed to, somehow, put everyone else at ease. Because if Ben was scared of something, that didn’t really mean anything. Again; scared of dirt.
(Now, if Yaz is scared of something, that’s a different story).
Since Ben’s, uh… departure, they’ve been sorely lacking that energy in the group. Kenji would wager he’s not the only one who misses it. He used to have so much fun riling Ben up with just a couple words (none of the others are so easily baited). And whenever Ben would freak out and instantly cling to him, like some kind of scrawny spider monkey, it made Kenji feel… capable, in a way.
Like, if Ben was trusting Kenji to protect him, maybe he wasn’t so useless after all (which was becoming an all too frequent feeling as the others continued to adapt and grow, leaving Kenji struggling to keep up).
Problem is, Ben’s really hard to scare now.
It’s not always obvious, like when he’s bragging about taking down Toro or itching to blow things up. Sometimes it’s the little things. Whenever they’re out in a group, foraging or gathering supplies, and there’s a sound in the distance that makes them all freeze, Ben’s frozen in readiness, not fear. He looks more like Yaz, tense and waiting with his fists up and eyes narrowed.
Sometimes, when they aren’t occupied by any particular task or imminent threat, and have the chance to enjoy some downtime, Ben drifts off to the side and just… watches, all tense, silent, and anxious. He’ll watch the tree line, or Bumpy on the ground below, or even just the rest of them as they go about their business. Kenji is sure he’s not the only one who’s noticed but none of them bring it up.
It’s… unsettling, seeing Ben like this. Kenji figured he just needed a couple weeks to fall back into the rhythm of the group, to see that he didn’t have to be this loner Rambo type of guy anymore. But even though he talks with them easy enough, seems to enjoy their company, and has a good handle on teamwork, it’s like there’s a part of him that can’t fully shake that mentality.
At least, not without help.
~*~
 Kenji’s plan is- in his humble opinion- pretty dang brilliant.
He waits for a time when it’s just him and Ben in the main level of the clubhouse (Yaz is running laps around their perimeter, Darius is in his bunk writing in his nerd book, Brooklynn and Sammy are upstairs going over inventory) and then announces he’s going for a shower. His daily showers are common knowledge at this point, so Ben just nods in acknowledgement and goes back to leaning against the railing, watching Bumpy graze down below in that tense-silent-anxious way of his.
Kenji sets up the shower and lets it run (he’ll go down to the river later and get more water to make up for the waste, because even though he tries to avoid manual labor whenever possible, it’s totally worth it in this case). And then, being more careful and silent than he’s ever been (except maybe in cases where he’s being hunted by dinos), he slowly creeps up behind Ben before leaping forward with a shriek, grabbing him by the shoulders.
Ben doesn’t just jump and scream. He jumps, screams, then spins around and swings a fist into Kenji’s jaw in one smooth motion.
Kenji’s laughing even as he staggers back, his jaw stinging (because at the end of the day, even though Ben’s kind of a badass now, he’s still Ben and his arms are pretty much chicken wings so there’s no real harm done, just a bruise at most). Plus that’s a valid reaction, considering everything, and he can’t say he didn’t deserve it.
“Oh man, I totally got you!” Kenji says anyways, to rub it in. “You should see your… face...”
And Kenji trails off because now he’s seeing Ben’s face.
What Kenji expected is this:
Once Ben realized it was just him pulling a prank, he would get mad. In that totally non-threatening dorky Ben way, where he scrunches his nose and puffs out his cheeks, his little fists clenched at his side like an irate toddler. Maybe he’d stomp off but it’d be worth it because being mad is better than being tense-silent-anxious and it’d give him the chance to be annoyed with Kenji. And maybe Ben being annoyed with Kenji would help everything feel a little more normal, a little more like before.
What Kenji gets is this:
Once Ben realizes it was just him pulling a prank, he doesn’t get mad. He starts shaking. Violently, uncontrollably. Like he’s suddenly come down with hypothermia despite being in a tropical jungle, staring at Kenji all the while and not saying a word. His chest rises and falls rapidly in little panicky breaths and the kind of fear in his eyes isn’t the kind that’s funny. It’s glassy-eyed with shrunken pupils that dart around Kenji’s face, frightened and searching, as if he isn’t fully seeing it.
Kenji’s mouth is dry. “Ben…?” he croaks out.
Ben swallows. “Oh,” he says, in a very small voice. “It’s you.”
Kenji hasn’t heard Ben’s voice sound that small since before, and it doesn’t feel like a victory.
By now, of course, the others have noticed the commotion and it doesn’t take more than a second for them to piece together what happened. Yaz rounds on Kenji with a furious snarl and whisper-screams a lecture about how stupid and irresponsible he is. Darius is immediately trying to mediate the situation while Sammy frantically asks Ben if he’s okay, to which he doesn’t respond. Brooklynn steps in, citing an unboxing video about dealing with shock, and when she goes to put a hand on Ben’s shoulder, he lets her.
And now Kenji realizes where he miscalculated. Ben never showed discomfort with physical contact before because he’d never been surprised by it before (because Ben has gotten scary good at being alert, always keeping an eye and an ear out on his surroundings even in the middle of a conversation). And when it came to his friends, it wasn’t unexpected for Sammy to rush in with a hug or Darius to pat his shoulder or Brooklynn to playfully knock elbows.
But Kenji snuck up on him, so Ben’s first thought wasn’t that it was a friend. It was that he was going to have to run for his life, like he has countless times since being stranded on this island.
Kenji apologizes over and over again as Darius gently leads him away by the elbow and Brooklynn talks to Ben in low tones while Sammy squeezes his hand and Yaz takes up a lookout position because they can’t afford for all of them to be distracted even though she occasionally cuts a glare at Kenji out of the corner of her eye so it’s really debatable how vigilant she’s actually being.
Throughout it all, Ben doesn’t get mad, but he doesn’t stop shaking.
 ~*~
 Darius explains it, later.
“The sudden fear reaction signaled a bunch of adrenaline to be released into his bloodstream, to give him the energy needed for running. And then, when he didn’t, there was nowhere for that energy to go. It’s like, even though his mind knew there wasn’t any danger, his body wasn’t convinced.” Then, a sympathetic look. “You didn’t know, man.”
Kenji only nods. But knowing doesn’t make it better because even though Ben’s stopped shaking he doesn’t turn his back on Kenji anymore and somehow that’s a million times worse than if he’d gotten mad.
 ~*~
 There are claws wrapped around Ben’s shoulders and shrieks in his ears.
Wind whips his face and his stomach lurches as he’s carried through the air, weightless, at the mercy of the Pteranodon. He’s never felt so small and utterly helpless before, not once in his life. Even his screams aren’t big enough to carry, snatched away by the wind and deafened by the roars of the terror-birds fighting over the right to tear him limb from limb.
And then he’s falling and has other things to worry about.
 ~*~
 Ben stops sharing Kenji’s bunk.
 ~*~
 In a rare moment of downtime, Yasmina is curled up with Darius’s field guide, adding a few more illustrations, when she feels Ben staring at her.
It’s not the first time she’s felt him staring at her. It is the first time, however, that she decides to stare back.
She means it to be playful, at first. She meets his eyes, one brow quirked as if to say, ‘What, is there something on my face?’ But instead of glancing away in sheepish embarrassment or jolting out of a daze, Ben just stares back. There’s no emotion in his expression at all except intense focus.
The faint smile drops from Yasmina’s face as she stares back in surprise. Then, with ever-growing confusion and a fair amount of alarm, she realizes that Ben’s shoulders are rising, tense and hunched like he’s trying to make himself look bigger.
Like an animal.
Yasmina knows what it is to stare down a wild animal. She’s felt predatory eyes on her before and either bolted or turned to face the challenge. And that’s what it is, for some of the dinos- a challenge. Sometimes they’re testing your mettle, and standing your ground is enough to make them back off.
Ben must’ve learned that, too. And for whatever reason, he’s slipping into that behavior now.
It’s a ridiculous thought. This is Ben, her friend. Her very scrawny friend who can’t weigh more than ninety pounds soaking wet, and prefers a diet of berries and grubs. And yet, here he is, staring her down like she’s a particularly bold pack of Compies that’s decided to threaten him.
Yasmina gives a slow, deliberate blink. “Ben?” she calls. “What’s up?”
Just like that, the spell is broken. Ben gives a violent start, blinking and shaking his head. Yasmina sees confusion flash across his face, and then realization. And now the embarrassment comes, but it’s darkened by something like horror.
Without a word, Ben turns and darts away, scrambling down the ladder to the alcove underneath the house where Bumpy’s napping.
Yasmina lets him go, too baffled and unsettled to form words.
 ~*~
 Eventually, Yasmina tells Darius about it.
His expression is troubled as she runs through the incident. But in the end, there’s nothing more he can tell her than what she’s already worked out on her own. It’s just another side effect of the mindset Ben has adopted throughout his isolation. Those habits were what he relied on to survive, and it’ll take time for him to realize he doesn’t have to constantly be on edge now that he’s got a team to look out for him.
Though privately, Yasmina wonders if maybe the rest of them should take a page out of Ben’s book. Seems like he’s got a better handle on survival than they do.
(And then she thinks how Sammy would react, if Yasmina started acting like a wary animal around her, and she realizes Ben’s methods come with a price.)
 ~*~
 After Ben runs the Compies off for the first time, staring becomes a defense tactic.
It’s not always the Compies, who are slowly but surely learning not to mess with him. Sometimes it’s the Parasaurolophus in the river, or the lone Pteranodon perched in a tree, or the group of Edmontosauruses grazing on the hilltop. As soon as he feels their eyes on him, he knows his best chance is to stare back, to show that he’s willing to put up a fight, that chasing him wouldn’t be worth it.
Obviously, there are some dinosaurs that doesn’t work on. But if Ben can drastically cut down the amount of time spent running for his life by standing his ground, then he’ll take it.
All he has to do is not back down.
 ~*~
 Ben avoids Yasmina for the next few days.
 ~*~
 Brooklynn wakes up in the middle of the night with an unshakeable feeling that something is wrong.
Her bad feeling is confirmed when she gets a look at the moon. Based on its position in the sky, she should’ve been woken up by Ben to take her night watch shift at least an hour ago. This practice, established by Darius months ago who insisted they should always have at least one person awake, has already become routine within the group. Brooklynn couldn’t sleep fully through the night if she tried.
Ben’s only just recently become a part of the routine. Immediately after his return, Darius thought it best just to let Ben settle in and get as much rest as he could, now that he had the security to do so, and everyone agreed. Ben had insisted he didn’t mind, but Darius stood firm, so it’s only been within the last few days that Ben took part.
But this is the first time he hasn’t woken Brooklynn up and her heart is in her throat as she rushes to the lookout point-
Only to find Ben sitting right where he’s supposed to be, looking out over their compound as a small candle burns next to him.
As soon as Brooklynn’s relief passes, it’s replaced with anger. “What are you doing?” she whispers furiously.
Ben, not at all surprised by her presence, gives her a sidelong look. “What does it look like I’m doing?”
“You were supposed to wake me up, so I could do night watch.” Brooklynn struggles to keep her voice low, so as not to alert the others. “What gives?”
Ben shrugs. “I knew I wasn’t gonna sleep tonight, so I figured I’d just take the whole watch myself.”
“That’s not how this works,” Brooklynn hisses, crossing her arms. “Even if you can’t fall asleep- and I’ve totally been there- you have to lay down and close your eyes and rest. You need to rest.”
Ben breaks into an easy smile, but Brooklynn can see the annoyed creases at his eyes. “Hey, it’s fine. I can-”
“Take care of yourself, I know,” Brooklynn interrupts, hating how frustrated she sounds but unable to help it. “But you don’t have to. We’re a team. We can take care of you too, alright?”
Ben stares at her for a moment. “I know that,” he says, sounding uncertain.
Brooklynn softens. When she reaches out to put a hand on his shoulder, he lets her. “Then… why?”
“I don’t know,” Ben admits. The muscles beneath Brooklynn’s hand are so tense, it feels like they’re going to snap. “I don’t know.”
They finish the night watch together.
 ~*~
 Brooklynn almost hates to bring it up to Darius.
Dude’s stressing almost nonstop about everything, all the time. And it really isn’t fair for him to be responsible for the rest of them, including Ben. But Darius is the only one who seems to have the… what’s it called, emotional intelligence, she supposes, to weigh in on the situation.
(Sammy is a close second, but her brand of caring is a little more touchy-feely, and this doesn’t seem like the right time for that.)
Darius is immediately worried, pointing out that Ben might accidentally fall asleep on watch if he keeps this up (something Brooklynn hadn’t even thought about). He promises to talk to Ben about it, and that’s that.
Brooklynn is only slightly relieved because she knows if Darius had a real fix for the problem, he would’ve said so. And if Darius doesn’t have a fix for it, maybe there isn’t one.
 ~*~
 Those first several nights, Ben doesn’t sleep at all.
And it’s not for lack of trying. But how can he sleep, when it’s pitch black and the jungle is full of unfamiliar sounds and he’s got no one but a baby Ankylosaurus by his side? He soon finds it’s even worse without Bumpy, though, because at least he trusted that Bumpy would wake up if there was any danger, as her senses are more powerful than his.
On his own, there’s no one to wake him up. So he has to stay up, and settle for catching short scattered naps throughout the day (if he can find a tree to hide up in).
It’s hard, but he’d rather be tired than dead.
 ~*~
 Ben is taken off night watch, but still ends up awake more often than not.
 ~*~
 Pyromaniac is a word no one ever expected to become synonymous with Ben, and yet here they are.
It’s one of the first things he always suggests as an answer to a problem; blow something up. Darius has a million reasons for them not to do that; they could get hurt, they could start a wildfire and burn the jungle down, they could attract unwanted attention from predators.
But that doesn’t stop Ben from cataloguing everything on the island that can be used as an explosive, memorizing their locations or creating hidden stashes. It doesn’t stop him from using the candles that came with the scavenged emergency kits. He’ll light them for no reason, just to watch the small flame flicker back and forth.
(Someday, months later, they’ll encounter a horrific hybrid dinosaur that is drawn to flames, and they’ll all think about how unsettling it is that Ben shares this trait, but none of them will say it.)
 ~*~
 It’s been one week since Bumpy left, and Ben is starting a fire.
Just a small one. It rained all day and he’s soaked to the bone, which normally wouldn’t be a huge problem considering the jungle climate. But now that it’s nighttime, there’s a chill in the air and he can’t afford to get sick. It’s risky, because at night he knows the light could draw attention to him, but his teeth are starting to chatter so there’s no helping it.
When a Stegosaurus stumbles upon him, baying low and angry at finding another creature in its territory, it’s the fire that makes it balk. Rumbling displeasure, it retreats back into the dark jungle. Ben quickly adds torches to his arsenal, using the rest of his shirt as tinder.
Fire is safety.
 ~*~
 Ben lights his candles in silence.
 ~*~
 “You can’t just run off like that,” Kenji says, deadly serious.
Ben scoffs. “I think you’re forgetting who defeated Toro,” he says with an easy smile.
“You’re not invincible, Ben!” Kenji snaps. The anger churning inside him is deceptively hollow, like it’s masking something else. “And I can’t lose you again.”
Ben isn’t smiling anymore. “You won’t,” he mutters, pushing past Kenji. “I can take care of myself, now. I don’t need you to play the hero and protect me.”
Kenji wants to protest that’s not what this is about, and that’s never been what this is about, but Ben is already gone.
 ~*~
 Ben still lives off berries and grubs.
 ~*~
 “… and so I was thinking, berries have seeds in them, right? So if we plant some, we’ll have our own berry bushes at the clubhouse. It’ll cut down our foraging time in the mornings for sure, and-”
“Uh, who are you talking to, Ben?”
Ben blinks at Yasmina’s voice, the girl having only just entered the room.
“Um, Bumpy?” he says, as if this should be obvious.
Yasmina glances out at the compound, where Bumpy is fast asleep and well out of earshot.
“… right.”
 ~*~
 Ben can’t sleep, even when he’s actually trying.
 ~*~
 “Alright,” Darius says, “so we need to get the T-Rex out of Main Street so we can do another sweep for supplies. Any ideas?”
Ben’s hand goes up.
“For the hundredth time, Ben, we aren’t going to feed the T-Rex to the Mosasaurus.”
Ben’s hand goes down.
 ~*~
 Ben feels more at home with Bumpy than the other campers.
 ~*~
 “You know we didn’t mean to leave you, right? We would’ve come back for you if we’d known…”
 ~*~
 Ben never talks about getting off the island.
 ~*~
 “You have to tell us where you’re going, Ben, you can’t just disappear-”
 ~*~
 Ben keeps slipping away.
 ~*~
“Blowing stuff up isn’t the answer to everything!”
~*~
 Ben keeps saying he’s okay.
 ~*~
 “We’re a team, we have to work together-”
 ~*~
 Ben keeps smiling.
 ~*~
 “Don’t you trust us to protect you?”
 ~*~
 Ben doesn’t know.
 ~*~
 Sammy finds Ben sitting on the roof of the clubhouse one day.
Her footsteps are loud and obvious as she approaches him. No chance of sneaking up. She knows he’s noticed her, from the subtle shift in his body. He doesn’t acknowledge her, though, continuing to stare off over the jungle and into the horizon, his skinny legs slotted through the railing and dangling over the edge.
The sun’s about to set, a few stars already twinkling in the purple edges of the sky. Sammy can remember another night, months ago, where Ben wasn’t here but everyone else was and they spotted bonfire smoke in the distance. She remembers the way her heart raced, the overwhelming joy and relief flooding through her. And yet, there had been undeniable heartache, because the realization that they’d made it out only meant it was more unfair that Ben hadn’t.
Sammy breaks the silence after a few moments.
“Are you okay?”
Ben doesn’t look at her, but she can see the easy smile that slants across his face, dying sunlight reflected in his eyes.
“Yeah.”
Sammy sees the lie for what it is. None of them are okay. No one who’s been through what they have would be. But there’s a certain danger that comes with not being willing to admit it, and an even greater danger that comes with not being able to see it.
“Y’know, it’d be fine if you weren’t.”
Ben doesn’t answer.
Sammy sits with him until the sky turns dark.
 ~*~
 It’s the way he struggles to eat anything he hasn’t obtained by himself.
It’s the way he sometimes goes off on his own without telling anyone.
It’s the way he talks to himself when he thinks no one else is around.
It’s the way he takes any concern for his safety as a personal attack.
It’s the way he leaps at the chance to blow something up.
It’s the way he can stare silently for hours.
It’s the way he smiles a little too easily.
 ~*~
 It’s not jumping at every unexpected movement, or screaming awake from night terrors, or flinching away from the slightest touch. It’s not loud meltdowns or hysterical sobbing or uncontrollable fits of rage.
(Even though those will come, someday, when the island is just a memory.)
It’s the little things, that- once you notice them- keep piling up.
And suddenly, they don’t seem so little anymore.
part [1] 2 3
—————————————————————————
I worked at a sushi bar in Japan. It was an exhausting shift. I bowed to my superior as my shift ended. I put on my jacket and walked my way home. Drunk people roamed the streets, so I decided to take a short cut through an alleyway to get home. I walked for a few minutes then a man in a red suit was thrown against the wall in front of me. “Oh my—are you okay,” I called out, coughing through the debris. He was grabbing his own shoulders it looked like. His face started to turn purple as he got further pushed in. His internal clock was nearing zero fast. He was dying and I didn’t know why.
I felt around him, and it was a figure who was invisible. I punched as hard as I could to the figure and deactivated his invisibility. The man fell to the ground, unconscious. “Well well. Who are you,” the figure said. I learned jujitsu in high school for self-defense. I charged at him, breaking his ribs, before he got the chance to turn invisible. He fell to the ground and struggled to breathe. “Defending a pro-hero? Fine, you win this round. But I’ll be back. Stronger,” he said as he disappeared.
I turn back to the man. He was wearing a red, tool-like suit, red hair. I performed chest compressions so he could breathe again. After a minute, he caught his breath, grabbing my wrists. “You’re okay,” I comforted. His internal clock restored as I watched his time go up, dramatically. He coughed as he sat up. “I thought I had him. I’m so stupid to be that vulnerable,” he said beating himself up. He punched a hole in the brick wall and looked back over to me. “I’m sorry you had to see that,” he said as he walked away.
“Wait,” I said. He almost didn’t want to turn back, but he stopped in his tracks and looked back at me. “You will get him next time. I’ll be rooting for you,” I said. He smirked as he left in the opposite direction and flew off into the night sky.
I got to my apartment and laid on my bed, staring at the ceiling. Did I really save a pro-hero? Was he embarrassed? I felt awful. Of course, I wanted him to win. I couldn’t bear to see someone’s internal clock run down that quickly without me doing anything. It was a reflex.
...............................................................................................
The next day, I was scheduled another exhausting shift. However, I was privately scheduled for a party to create a unique sushi experience with some guests. It was a four-top, 2 men and 2 ladies. They take their seats as I prepare their courses. I greet the guests. One of the men looks familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I bow to them and my manager comes in to greet the guests. He seems excited to see them. “Thank you Ground Zero and Red Riot for your service. If there’s anything to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know,” he said eagerly. Pro-heros. I’m serving pro-heroes. I remembered last night and immediately knew why I recognized that face. I saved Red Riot.
Red Riot pulled out the chair for his lady and so did Ground Zero. “Katsuki, this place looks amazing,” his date said. “All for you, baby girl,” he kissed her on the cheek. I kept my head low as I explained the process of the dinner and asked for their recommendations. Red Riot cocked his head to the side looking at me, but his date would pull his face into hers. I prepared the courses in front of them. Course 1 was a cold appetizer, course 2 was a hot appetizer. The ladies would tease their dates by cleaning off something on their face or random kisses at the table. I tried to not let it bother me. It wasn’t my business. Course 3 was a main course. I could tell that Ground Zero had his hand in his date’s skirt by her facial expressions. Red Riot was constantly showering his date with kisses. I let them enjoy their course, so I left the room.
I went to the bathroom to freshen up a little for the second half of my shift. When I left, I ran into Red Riot. “I’m sorry, chef. Please excuse me. Your food is so fresh and amazing,” he said. I thanked him. “Hey, I was wondering, do I know you from somewhere,” he continued. I simply shook my head ‘no’ and continued to walk back to the kitchen. I came back to the table for course 4, the palate cleanser and course 5 dessert. I got creative and made an interactive dessert for the ladies to enjoy. The ladies would feed their dates berries and lick chocolate off their fingers. It was just too much at this point. Get a room, already. The ladies excused themselves from the table as I was cleaning up my station. Ground Zero followed them, leaving Red Riot alone. He stared at me as I kept my head down. “Wait, it’s you. You were the one that saved me last night,” he said.
“No, sir,” I began, “You must have confused me for someone else.”
“Don’t deny that. I recognize your eyes. I should be thanking you for being there for me. Please tell me your name,” he said.
“I’m (Y/N). I felt bad that you felt vulnerable, so I didn’t want to take the credit for saving you since you’re the one supposed to be protecting me,” I said.
“Don’t you worry. I will beat him and protect you,” he said confidently.
“I know you will,” I reassured him. He smiled and I smiled back. The ladies and Ground Zero came back. Red Riot paid the bill. The men escort the ladies out. Red Riot looks back at me and smiles as he leaves.
I pull through the second half of my shift, but all I could think about was Red Riot. Was it his charm? Was he genuinely concerned for me? I mean, all pro-heroes are like that. Why would he give a civilian any attention when he has a lot to save? I clean up my station and bow to my superior.
Back in the alleyway, I found Red Riot, alone. “(Y/N),” he said as he ran over to me.
“Didn’t you have a date,” I asked.
“Yeah, but apparently she was more interested in Bakugo than me. Gotta love, modern dating, huh,” he laughed.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“It’s alright. Would you want me to walk you home,” he asked willingly.
“S—sure,” I said, “So Red Riot—”
“I should probably introduce myself. I’m Eijiro Kirishima,” he laughed.
“Kirishima,” I continued, “Did you like the sushi?”
“Yes, thank you for an awesome experience, (Y/N),” he smiled. I take out my phone and browse through it. “Oh, sunflowers. Do you like them,” Kirishima looked at my lockscreen.
“Yeah, it’s the only flower that has a heart,” I said.
“Sunflowers have hearts?” he puzzled.
“Well not actually. When the sun is away, sunflowers turn to each other for light. I wish more people would be more open to give and receive light from others,” I smiled.
“I see,” Kirishima said. We arrive at the front entrance of my apartment. “Thanks again for everything,” he said. I smiled and thanked him for walking me home. I got in the elevator and he waved bye to me as it closed the doors.
…………………………………………………………………………
Sunday, the next day, I had the day off, so I decided to hit the gym in the morning. I worked on legs and arms with some cardio. When I was dripping in sweat, I stretched myself out on the mats. “(Y/N),” I heard a voice. It was Kirishima. He had a compression shirt to show off his muscles and loose shorts. “Hey,” I said.
“You’re an early bird too,” he laughed.
“I try to be sometimes,” I chuckled.
“Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to have breakfast with me. I know this awesome place for omelets,” Kirishima said.
“Just me and you,” I asked.
“Yeah,” he laughed, “If that’s okay with you.”
“S—sure. That—that’d be great,” I stumbled.
“Awesome! I’ll shower up and meet you at the front,” he said. He walked away, fist bumped a guy, and looked back at me and winked. Was he flirting with me?
Both of us showered up and I met him at the entrance. “Would you mind if I drive? I can drop you off back here,” Kirishima said.
“Sure, I guess,” I said. I got into his car and his car was fairly clean compared to other cars that I know.
We arrive at the restaurant. It has a calm atmosphere with waterfalls and foliage. We order some food and some to share. “I hope you’re hungry. I tend to eat a lot after a workout,” he said, bashfully.
We get to know each other a little better knowing our hobbies, interests, and things we like. His laugh was so pure, and I enjoy spending time with him. We parted ways. “Hey, would you mind if I got your number,” he asked. I smiled and gave it to him. “Awesome, I’ll see you around,” he smiled.
After a while, I would look at the news and watch Red Riot defeat villains with Ground Zero. I would smile at the television. I haven’t seen him since the breakfast, but clearly, he’s been busy trying to keep the city safe. I feel my crush getting stronger the more I think about him. No. I can’t let him get to me. My last relationship was too toxic, and I hate that it defers me from something great, but I have to keep my guard up. I started fading in and out of consciousness.
“Hey (Y/N), I’m about to pick up some food. Would you mind if I came over,” he texted me.
“Sure,” I texted him back with my address. About half an hour later, there was a knock at my door. It was him.
“Hi, may I come in?” He had takeout, sunflowers, and taiyaki. I invited him in and he has the biggest smile on his face. “Uh, these are for you. I thought you would appreciate them,” he blushed.
“Thank you Kirishima, you’re so sweet,” I looked for a vase. He saw that I had the news on. “Oh, so I see you were watching me defeat the invisible man with Bakugo,” he said.
“Of course,” I said, “I told you I would support you.” He blushed as he gathered the takeout to the couch. My couch was the ones where you sink into, he didn’t really expect that when he sunk in the middle. I chuckled. “Your couch is so comfy, but I need some help,” he laughed. I helped him up with the food and sat next to him. “Enough of the news, what are you currently watching on Netflix,” he asked.
“I’ve been watching this cooking show, but I’m sure you don’t want to watch that,” I said, embarrassed.
“No, I do! I love food,” he smiled. We ate takeout as we watched my cooking show. He seemed really into it. He had a lot of questions on different cuisines and questioned a lot of American combinations. I offered to clean up our food and enjoy our taiyaki.
“What do you want to watch? We already watched what I wanted to,” I asked. “Well I’m kinda nerdy and watch hero movies,” he said. “I like hero movies,” I smiled.
I chose the movie as I took another bite of the fish pastry and I look over to see him smiling at me. “Is there something on my face,” I said with a mouth full. He laughed. “No—no sorry,” he blushed. I finished my taytaki and so did he. I got us a blanket to share. “I’m sorry that my apartment is cold,” I said.
“Well come here,” he offered his arm around me. My heart stopped as I entered his embrace. I almost wanted to push him away. I know he was being nice to make me warm, but it was almost too overwhelming for me. I tried to hide that I was breathing heavier as my eyes started to water. I started twitching in his arms. “What’s wrong,” he asked with concern. He paused the movie and was all ears. I stood up in front of him.
“I’m sorry,” I said through my tears. “What is it? I want to understand,” he said.
“Eijiro, I don’t know how to think, act, or feel around you. You’ve been so nice to me and when you touch me, it is so comforting where I get overwhelmed because I want trust you. I haven’t felt that way in a long time and I’m sorry,” I vomited. I held my face in my hands in embarrassment, but then I felt his arms around me.
“Don’t be sorry,” he said holding me, “You are strong and full of light. I’m sorry to overwhelm you with so much. And for the record, I can’t stop thinking about you too. You saved my life. You would be a great sidekick, or even a hero.”
I started to tear up more in his arms, and he didn’t let go. He was so soft and warm, regardless of his hardening quirk. “Here, let’s continue this cuddle session on the couch,” he offered. We plopped on the couch and he started to laugh. “You know,” he began, “This is gonna sound weird, but you cry pretty. Most people I know cry ugly like this,” he wailed. I laughed through my tears. “There’s a smile,” he blushed. He resumes the movie, and he adjusts me to where I am on top of him.
His heartbeat was calm and content. I looked up at him and he looked down to me and smiled. I smiled back and put my head back on his chest. I started to fall asleep to the symphonies of his breathing.
Half asleep, I look up at Kirishima and he’s asleep to the credits rolling. I get up slowly off of him, which awakens him. “Looks like we both fell asleep,” he yawned.
“Yeah,” I laughed, “Would you like to stay the night,” I asked. Still half asleep he said, “Sure.”
He stood up and gave me a hug. In the hug, he cupped my face towards his and lightly kissed me. Initially, we smiled, but came to realization on what happened. “I’m sorry. That was too forward of me,” he whispered. I kissed him back and he didn’t want me to stop. “Now, we’re even,” I whispered back. Kirishima pulled me into an embrace kissing me softly. Our kiss turned slow and passionate. He lifted me from my waist and carried me into my room. We laid on the bed as our kiss deepens. He pulls away and smiles. He lightly traces my face. “So beautiful,” he said softly. I blush into his hands. We both cuddle each other and fall asleep.
..................................................................................................
The next morning, I reach out for Kirishima, but then wake up to the smells of breakfast. I walk over to my kitchen to see him making breakfast. “Hey, you’re awake. I hope you don’t mind. I made breakfast. That cooking show got me inspired,” he smiled. I laughed as I helped him set the table. We exchanged looks as we took our first bites. “Did you sleep okay,” I asked.
“Like a rock,” he said, “You kinda wiggle your nose a little when you sleep. I thought it was cute.”
Kirishima gets a phone call from Bakugo. “Excuse me,” he said. After a few seconds, his face turned serious and hung up the phone. “Hey, uh, I gotta go. But I hope you enjoy breakfast and I’ll text you later, okay,” he kissed me on the forehead and bolted out the door.
I turned on the news and there was a villain holding a child hostage. Ground Zero and Red Riot showed up at the scene to save the child. “I’m here to support you,” I said eating breakfast and watching the news. After a heated battle, the pro-heroes returned the child to their parents. Red Riot turns to the media and points at the camera. “You’re my sunflower,” he says.
   It was almost amazing how the KiraPati building could empty its staff. It had been all five of them for so long, it felt peculiar and out of place when other commitments drew away the other girls. Aoi had band practice whilst Akira and Yukari had to double down with studying due to upcoming high school exams. So, where the kitchen was usually bustling and lively, it was just Ichika and Himari in it today.
   Just like the good old times in a way as Himari had been Ichika’s first recruit.
   But a little bit had changed between now and then. So many seemingly impossible things had happened; there had been highs and lows and all sorts of joyful moments in between that Himari could never had imagined on her lonesome. She was all rules and logic and being a Pretty Cure seemed to break that with superspeed.
    Ichika had been Himari’s first, real friend. She had always been a little awkward and lonely but Ichika’s energy and vivacity had completely broken through Himari’s heart that had been hidden for so long due to previous social rejections. Now she was Ichika’s - and the rest of their gang’s - little sweets scientist and Himari relished that security of friendship. And now something more too.
   Ichika had become Himari’s first, real crush. Himari was just infatuated with Ichika. She gave her attention and it was meaningful. They shared things between each other - books, study tips, and of course desserts too - and spent a lot of time around each other. Be it one on one or in a bigger group, like with their fellow Pretty Cures or their fellow classmates at school.
   At first, Himari thought that her racing heart and red face around Ichika was normal, or to be expected. She wasn’t used to having a friend around so much but it just became too much. Himari was spending far too much time thinking about Ichika, even when they were far, far apart from each other or at odd times of the day or night. It then became apparent to Himari, who was ever slow on the uptake, that these strange thoughts about her friend were not mere thoughts at all. She was pining for Ichika.
   The realisation harrowed Himari. She had never been in love or in longing for someone before. She was worried that she would undoubtedly mess it up somehow and Ichika would never be her friend again, let alone her…. No, Himari couldn’t even bring herself to say the girl and the friend combination word. It was too embarrassing.
   Fortunately, Ichika seemed to have her head in the clouds like the whip cream airhead that she was. She seemed to think that Himari bumbling through her crush to be her usual personality. The fact they typically hung out together in larger groups definitely helped to mask Himari’s feelings and how they kept puff, puff, puffing up inside of her like a sponge cake in an oven.
   This afternoon was not one of those afternoons. It was just Himari and Ichika in the KiraPati building. Well, they had Pekorin and [what’s Chourou floating around, but they were doing whatever it was that fairies and not-ghost fairies did. They weren’t exactly making up the company that KiraPati usually bustled with and therefore, not helping Himari at all in this terrifying situation of it just being her and her crush.
   “So what do you wanna do this afternoon, Himarin?” Ichika asked with excruciatingly bright eyes.
   “I, um, well, er, there’s so m-much to… do?” Himari mumbled.
   Ichika laughed, “Would you rather go home for the afternoon?” she asked. “I won’t be offended.”
   “No!” Himari yelled back, spooking Ichika, making her blink twice. Himari blushed, she hadn’t meant to be so loud and she became mousy - or maybe squirrelish - again. “I love spending time with you Ichika…” she mumbled and even quieter, she added, “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
   “Aww, you're so sweet, Himarin.” Ichika beamed and she pat Himari on the head, her hair felt warmed by the sun that was streaming in from the back window, it was nice. “Well, since you seem eager but are plumb out of ideas, I can’t believe, then do you mind if I make a suggestion?”
   “N-Not at all.” Himari stammered with a wobbly smile.
   “There’s a dessert that I want to try making and I think if its us, it’ll be the perfect combination.” Ichika said.
   Himari’s eyes lit up with wonder and went wide. Ichika couldn’t have been more pleased with such a reaction and her smile grew cheeky.
   “Well, here’s my bright idea: I want to make a trifle with you, Himarin.” Ichika announced.
   “A trifle…” Himari echoed back on the cusp of a gasp. “It's perfect.”
   “I think so too.” Ichika agreed.
   A dessert with a cake and a custard element: it really was perfect for a pair such as Himari and Ichika. They got to work almost immediately. Cake, especially sponge cake, was Ichika’s specialty so she was whipping it up with no problem. Equally with ease, Himari was sorting out the custard. Soon, the kitchen was smelling homely of vanilla as these two girls independently made their own to eventually marry together. Once the cake was baking in the oven and the custard was settling in its pot, the two girls joined up again to make the gelatin.
   For the gelatin, they decided to go with a universal lemon and pineapple flavour, thinking that would complement whatever else they decided to add to the trifle. The acidity was easy for Himari to balance as she did more of the flavour balancing than Ichika who was more than happy to provide muscle by stirring up the crystals into the fine, watery jelly before putting it in the refrigerator.
   That gave the girls a spare half an hour whilst everything had to bake and cool and chill and whatever else they needed. So, they tried to chip at their homework in the lull of their hard work. Himari enjoyed it but Ichika was chomping at her pens wanting to get back to the cooking. She was utterly impatient and doing poorly in her mathematics for it, but that gave Himari plenty of excuses to help and when Ichika finally got to focus, the way she lit up when she finally got a correct answer was absolutely worth it.
   The way her face lit up when she realised she could finally get back to baking, or at least closer to it, was even worthier. Her grin was huge and it made Himari’s heart skip a beat as Ichika raced around the kitchen to check on things before making a final stop at the refrigerator.
   “So, what kind of trifle should we make?” Ichika asked as she opened up the refrigerator, assessing its internal situation top to bottom. “One with berry flavours or one with citrus flavours?”
   Himari peeked just over Himari’s shoulder as she held out the door to refrigerator, she hummed, “Why not both?” she suggested in a tiny voice.
   “Oh, Himarin, you are a genius!” Ichika exclaimed.
   She began to grab practically everything out of the refrigerator. She scooped up everything out of the fruit tray and what Ichika missed, Himari was more than happy to help cart out to the main preparation table. They sorted out the various fruits by flavour so they could layer them appropriately in the trifle. It wouldn’t be long at all now until the timer on the oven dinged and the custard was sufficiently cooled.
   Now was the hard part which would require both their brains: what kind of animal motif should they try and arrange the trifle into? It was a very trifling matter, Ichika and Himari both found as they waited out the last of the baking. And then, just with the high pitched beep of the oven timer going off, Ichika had a perfect idea.
   “I’ve got it!” she exclaimed, rocketing to her feet and spooking Himari who had almost begun to daydream in the lull of their idea creation and their baking.
   “You do?” Himari asked.
   “An animal that was both rabbit-y and squirrely: a ferret!” Ichika announced.
   “Aww, that could be cute. Let’s try it.” Himari agreed.
   Ichika beamed and they got to work. She went over and opened up the oven, removing the cake inside of it whilst Himari brought the pot of freshly made custard closer. Whilst the cake cooled, Ichika whipped up some cream and sure enough, in no time at all, she and Himari were slathering up the cake and rolling it up, just to cut it through.
   Ichika stuck groups of four rolled cake slices to the glass bowl they were using. She giggled to herself, hoping the paw print motif would come through once Himari had began to lace the blank spaces with custard. Once the outer decorations were done, it was time to fill up the bowl from bottom to the top with its various layers.
   Together, Ichika and Himari made layers upon layers of cake and custard scattered occasionally with a blend of pineapple and orange juice to help the sponge cake absorb the flavours around it. Then, they added in a couple layers of the jelly they had made alternated with fresh cut fruit, whatever they felt like. Rings of pineapple slices, clusters of strawberry slices, random smattering of various berries. They were having a blast and before they knew it, they had filled the trifle to the rim of the glass bowl it was setting inside. Now was for the final layer, the top layer, and upon it, Ichika endeavoured to create the best ferret that she could.
   Himari smeared the last of the custard on top of the cake and fruit. She then shuffled to the side to let Ichika the artist go wild. Slowly, Ichika made a very long and winding shape out of slices of strawberries for a body and wedges of peaches for limbs. She dotted the head with blueberries for eyes and a nose before finally gifting the fruity ferret raspberries for paws. Neither girl could be prouder of the end creation.
   “This looks delicious, Ichika.” Himari smiled.
   “It does, I can’t wait to dig in.” Ichika squealed.
   “We should take a photo of it to show the other girls tomorrow.” Himari suggested.
   “We absolutely should.” Ichika agreed, whipping out her phone to take a frenzy of photographs, making Himari giggle.
   When Ichika finished, she handed Himari a large ladle to scoop and spoon out the trifle from the bowl. By now, their stomachs were practically empty and were grumbling accordingly.
   “Let’s dig in!” Ichika enthusiastically said once she and Himari had been served up equal shares of the trifle.
   “Yes, let’s.” Himari replied, matching such high energy of Ichika’s.
   In their bowls, the trifle was dazzling with the kira-kiraru that they had worked up beating the custard and mixing the cake batter and layering up the treats in between. It was a very bright and yellow end concoction that glistened with hidden gems of red and blue from the strawberries and blueberries respectively.
   Himari neatly excavated the layers and was surprised by how soft they had become soaked in juice and custard. Having a sample taste, she was blown away by how remarkably harmonious the citric and classically sweet flavours of the trifle were. It mightn’t have been a traditional pudding on Himari’s sense of the dessert but it was spectacular nonetheless. Ichika ate ravenously beside her, pleased in her own unique and messy way that the ferret trifle had been a rousing success.
   As Himari savoured the sweetness of cake, custard, and fruit on her spoon, she mumbled around it, “This trifle is exactly like us.” Her cheeks were plumed redder than usual; she sounded - and even looked - very dreamy, too.
   Ichika noticed out the corner of her eye and slowly sat down her spoon, her bowl was practically empty, all but licked clean, “Yeah it is… Hey Ichika, can I ask you something?”
   “Y-Yes, certainly.” Himari blurted out without thinking.
   “Do you have a crush on me?” Ichika asked.
   Himari just got redder and redder, shakier and shakier, she looked fit to explode like a rocket.
   “‘Cause I have a crush on you, too, is all and this trifle got me thinking…” Ichika rambled.
   Himari just froze like ice-cream. She could not believe what she was hearing. She would not believe what she was hearing. Yet, despite being as stock still as any one human could be, her heart was racing a million miles an hour and her face was going very, very red. Redder than any strawberry could ever hope to hear.
   “Uh… Himarin?” Ichika murmured and she waved her hand in front of Himari.
   Himari continued to freeze and Ichika waited, patiently, for Himari to say something. Anything. And when she did, what she was able to utter out anything loud but those whispered words meant the world to Ichika.
   Stiltedly, Himari nodded then spoke, “Y-Yes. I like you, Ichika… You are the cake to my custard, just like this trifle.”
   “Glad to hear it.” Ichika giggled. She leaned in and pecked Himari on the cheek, short-circuiting her little sweets scientist again to both their eager delight.
I kinda went off on a tangent but it’s all Casey fluff so I’m not sorry 😝 Also went a little more protective Casey for the big reveal but there’s still some jealousy in there. Enjoy this long ass fic! 😊
Warning: Mention of and reference to smut, nothing particularly detailed.
You took a deep breath as you awoke, the warmth of the room from the sun shining through the gap in the curtains mixing with the smell of fresh sheets was a moment you treasured each morning. It’s what kept you grateful. You knew in your line of work that all it took was a bad call to have your future ripped away from you. That you knew from personal experience. Only this morning, along with the previous few, there was a different scent swirling into the mix. It was a cosy combination of something very musky and woody, with a hint of smoke.
Taking a moment to cherish how lucky you were before you fluttered your eyes open, you remembered the events of last night, which brought a light blush to your cheeks, as you became aware of how you were both completely naked. Matt had his chest flush to your back, an arm draped around your waist and hugging you softly and his breath was ever so slightly tickling your neck.
That’s when a smile grew on your face, one of those grins that were impossible to hold back, not that you wanted to. For the past three days, Sylvie Brett, your best friend, partner and roommate, had gone back home to Fowlerton to face her parents for the first time since she broke off her engagement with the Chaplain. She had spoken to them over the phone, of course, but as soon as the chatter died down in her hometown about her antics and she had worked up the nerve to show her face again, she decided to take a few days off and visit them.
And while you were going to miss your best friend, even if it was just for five days, you were excited to finally be able to spend a couple of nights with your boyfriend. You and Matt didn’t get to do this often (unless you booked a hotel room, which was becoming an expensive endeavour), and it wasn’t just about the sex. You loved the domesticity of it all, cooking dinner together, laughing, talking, listening to music, cuddling on the couch whilst watching a movie. You felt complete when you were with Matt, and it was something you were never going to get tired of, and neither was he, if your relationship continued in the direction it was going in.
When you and Matt first started seeing each other, it was just over a year after Gabby left. You had replaced her on Ambo, quickly becoming a part of the 51 family with little to no grievances towards you. You were pretty sure Matt actually wasn’t a fan of you at first, seeing as you technically took someone’s place who he didn’t want to be gone, but he soon got past it, and you both actually became good friends. You had the same sense of humour, a similar taste in music and you both liked the same movies, so you had a lot to bond over. And you fell hard.
At first you were angry at yourself. How on earth could you fall in love with a colleague - a superior - let alone one who was still grieving from his divorce? Only, however hard you tried to stop yourself, you just ended up making it worse. For example, if you tried not to meet his topaz blue eyes as he smiled, you became more aware of how gorgeous his laugh sounded and decided immediately you didn’t get to hear it enough. See the problem?
But one night at Molly’s changed everything. It was Christmas time last year, and after saying a last goodbye and happy holidays to everyone before you went back to your hometown, you left the bar just as Casey was entering.
You were practically beaming from ear to ear as you approached the door. Herrmann had a loop of classic Christmas hits on throughout the evening, and you were still feeling the rush from when Casey dragged you into his little office back at the station earlier to exchange gifts with you. You argued that you weren’t technically allowed to open it yet, seeing as Christmas wasn’t for a couple more days, but Matt had persuaded you by telling you how much he wanted to see your face when you opened it. Of course you couldn’t say no to such a sweet admission, especially from Matt. It was totally worth it when you excitedly ripped off the wrapping paper to reveal a photo album full of memories from the past year and a half. It brought a tear to your eye and a smile that lit up your face, as did the expression that Matt wore. He was so elated that you loved it, enjoying how he got to see the smile he adored so much.
So you said a last goodbye and then swung open the gorgeous wooden door, stepping out into the freezing Chicago night. That’s when you ended up being so close to Matt Casey that you could feel the warmth of his breath before it got cooled down by the air.
“Oh, sorry, Matt.” You laughed slightly awkwardly as you took a step back.
“No, it was my fault. I was in a bit of daydream.” He smiled.
“Well, I, er, was just heading out. Wanted to say goodbye before I make my way home tomorrow morning.”
“Oh, okay, well, have a good Christmas, Y/N.”
“You too, Matt.” You smiled back, raising your eyes away from his face (because your heart was telling you to just lean forward and do what you’ve wanted to for months) to look up in hopes to catch a glimpse of the stars. Only, you didn’t see them, you saw the little bunch of green leaves adorned by white berries, and your eyes widened.
Matt was confused by your expression, so he followed your eyeline, being met with the same thing; mistletoe. When he looked back down once again at your face, you were biting your lip, your eyes flickering between his mouth and his eyes dangerously. You’d never know how desperately he wanted to use his thumb to free your bottom lip from your teeth, but the thought soon disappeared when you leaned in.
He met you halfway, lips brushing against one another’s in uncertainty before you pushed forward, pressing a not-so-chaste kiss to his mouth, something which he didn’t expect but wasn’t mad about. It quickly became heated, all the pent-up sexual tension you both harboured for months being poured into the kiss, the way your hands wrapped around his neck, how his found your waist and then your ass when you pressed him against the wall behind him.
Breathless, you pulled away, painfully aware of how you were still in the doorway of Molly’s, letting out a little laugh. “We should probably get out of here, before someone finds us.” You smirked. All Matt could do was nod, wearing that boyish grin of his with a hint of lust in his eyes, before he pulled you quickly to his truck to make a quick getaway.
One thing led to another, and after finally admitting your feelings for each other that night, you became a ‘thing’ that had now been going strong for about six months. ‘Thing’ is the only way you felt right describing it, seeing as you two were exclusive but no one knew about it yet, apart from both of your families.
That had been Matt’s idea, to keep your relationship secret. He felt worried that the house might have a bit of a problem with it, seeing as the wound from Gabby leaving is still a little tender for some of them. And though you didn’t share the same concern, you understood and therefore agreed. Plus, it was going to be fun sneaking around for a while, possibly even sexy.
Little kisses being trailed along your shoulder are what informed you Matt was coming out of his slumber.
“Good morning, sleepyhead.” You smiled even though he couldn’t see it.
“Morning, babe.” He mumbled against your shoulder, still half dazed, before letting out an almighty yawn.
“Still tired?” You chuckled, gently turning over to face him.
“Do you blame me? We were at it like rabbits last night.” He grinned wide at the way your cheeks flushed.
“Well, too bad we have to get up for shift, otherwise you could’ve given me a reminder.” You winked before sitting up, pulling the sheets with you to cover your chest.
“We could always take a shower.” Matt teased, reaching out a hand to draw shapes on your thigh.
Though the motion cause goosebumps to raise on your skin, you shook your head lightly, biting your lip in his direction before standing up and pulling on one of your oversized t-shirts.
“No time. I need to drop you off home, remember? How about I make some quick breakfast whilst you get dressed and then I’ll drive you.” You offered.
“Sounds lovely.” He said, finally moving to get ready whilst you slipped away to the kitchen.
You were halfway into making some French toast when you heard the keys in the door. At first you thought you imagined it, blaming it on the fact you were still a little drowsy. But you knew you couldn’t imagine Sylvie standing right in front of you.
“Something smells good.” She exclaimed, which really woke you up.
“Sylvie!” You practically shouted, both out of shock and as a way to alert Matt about your unexpected company. “I thought you weren’t coming back for a couple more days?”
“Wasn’t planning on it, but I knew as soon as I got there that five days was gonna be too long, especially when everything there was reminding me of being with Kyle.” She visibly shuddered, taking a seat at one of the stools at the breakfast bar. “I just felt trapped, you know? My parents understood and were fine with me coming back early. I called Boden last night to let him know I’d be available for shift today, and I also called you, but you didn’t pick up.”
“Sorry, I didn’t even realise, I was a little busy.”
“I can tell.” She smirked. You raised an eyebrow at her. “Whoever you were getting busy with has left his shoes at the door.”
Your eyes went wide in shock as she chuckled. ‘Shit’ you thought.
“Would you like me to go hide in my room whilst you get mystery man out of here?” She smiled. God, you love this woman.
“Yes please.” You replied sheepishly.
She slid off the stool and went to pick up her bag by the door. On her way past you she stopped, smiled over at you and said, calmly, “Oh, and say hi to Casey for me.” whilst pointing nonchalantly at the CFD captain’s jacket hung on the coat rack before practically skipping to her room.
You were absolutely gobsmacked. You quickly served up the French toast before going back into your room to find Casey sat on the edge of the bed with an amused look on his face.
“Did you…?” You asked, gesturing with your thumb to the kitchen.
“Yeah, I did.” He chuckled.
You shook your head, the shock finally wearing off as you went to pull on a pair of sweats from your drawer. “I swear she should’ve become a detective.”
***
You and Brett along with Truck 81 and Engine 51 were making your way to a vehicle accident just five minutes after your shift started. You hadn’t had a chance to speak to Brett yet about this morning, so you saw the drive there as the perfect opportunity.
“Listen, I owe you an explanation.”
“No you don’t.” Brett smiled sincerely, flickering her eyes over to me to show she was being genuine before looking back to the road.
“Well, I want to. It wasn’t just last night, me and Casey. We’ve been seeing each other for nearly six months now, and I really wanted to tell you, I did, but Matt asked me to keep it a secret, just for a bit, so I did, and…I’m sorry.”
“I know, Y/N. I figured it out a little while ago. I’ve seen the way you look at each other and have your little hushed conversations and comfort each other discreetly after a tough call. It’s okay, it’s none of my business, and I’m not mad.” She chuckled, and I let out a deep breath in relief. I figured she wouldn’t be, but I wasn’t sure. “By the way, I think you’re really good together.”
“Thanks.” You smiled at her as you pulled up to the scene of the accident.
You pulled up just after Truck, surveying the scene as you slowed to a stop. A car had collided with a parked van, its engine letting off a lot of smoke. You and Brett hopped out, grabbing the jump bags and then making your way over to the car where Casey had already begun talking to the patient.
Herrmann came over with a halligan to pry open the driver’s door while Casey went around to the passenger side, smashing the window and climbing inside. You thanked Herrmann before peering in, seeing that the guy had his leg pinned in, which is why Casey had climbed in.
With gloves on, you examined the laceration the guy had on his forehead, most likely from slamming it on the wheel on impact.
“How’s he doing?” Brett called from behind you.
“He’s alert. Laceration to the face, left leg is pinned.” You replied, looking over to Casey who shifted in his seat to get a better angle before jamming his halligan into the footwell to free the driver. Meanwhile, you put a c-collar on him, noticing his rapid breathing at the same time and so you tried to calm him down by making small talk.
“How is it you managed to crash into a parked vehicle?”
“I looked down to change the radio station. It was an emergency; they were playing Justin Bieber.” He let out a strained laugh.
“Say no more.” You chuckled.
“I knew you’d understand.” He managed to get out in panting breaths before he focused on you. “Your eyes are incredible by the way.”
You were a little taken aback by his last sentence, seeing as he was struggling to focus on keeping calm, let alone your face. You glanced over to Casey, still working diligently as he spared a look your way, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“I think you must’ve hit your head.” You smiled, just as the hood of the car burst into flames.
You ducked away, painfully aware that Casey was stuck inside the car. You trusted your colleagues in putting out the fire before it could harm anyone, but still your heart worried for any unexpected turns this could take, putting the driver and Casey in danger.
He managed to free the driver’s leg, shouting to the rest of Truck for a backboard. They safely extracted the driver, and almost immediately after, Casey swan dived out of the car, just as a fireball exploded from the car.
Stood by the gurney, you gazed over, your heart in your stomach as you waited to see if he was okay. A few seconds later, Casey was up on his feet on the other side of the car, and you let out the breath you didn’t realise you were holding. He looked over, trying to meet your eyes, and when he succeeded, he gave a little nod to tell you he was okay. And that’s all you needed to be focused once more, ready for the patient to be delivered to you by the firefighters.
***
It was a few hours later, just as you were finishing up restocking the ambo, when Casey emerged from the common room doors looking for you. You had sent Brett inside a few minutes earlier so she could get something to eat, offering to finish up on your own.
You smiled over at Casey as you ticked off the last box on your checklist, jumping down from your rig. He was making his way over to you when you heard, “Hey, there she is!” from a familiar voice behind you. “It’s the miracle worker with the big y/e/c eyes.”
You turned, being met by the guy you saved from the crash earlier today holding a bunch of yellow lilies and wearing a smile from ear to ear.
“Oh, hi…erm…”
“Mason.” He said, offering you the flowers.
“Yes, Mason, of course. Thank you so much, these are gorgeous, but you didn’t have to bring me anything.” You smiled at him, conscious of Matt standing a few feet away near the truck to make it less awkward. “How’s your leg?”
“Oh, they did an MRI, just a muscle tear, it’s no biggie. I just wanted to thank you for taking such good care of me.” He explained. His voice seemed smooth, seductive even, but you thought you were just reading too much into it, so you just smiled a little wider and tilted your head sincerely.
“Ah, well, just doing my job.” You said, and it came out a little more awkward than you would have liked, but he didn’t seem to notice.
It was then you felt extremely lucky as a call came over the intercom for ambo, so you took a deep breath before walking past him and moving to get into the rig. “Well, I gotta go, but thank you for the flowers.”
“I never got your name.” He followed you, looking through the window as you sat in your seat.
“Oh, um, Y/N.” You offered a small smile, but you desperately wanted to get out of there. You turned to your right to place the flowers down in the space in the console before turning back to him, only he was leaning his forearms on the windowsill and offering you a business card.
“Well, Y/N, I would be over the moon if you let me buy you lunch sometime.” His grin was a little creepier now he was so close, and you could smell the bitter coffee on his breath.
You took the card to be polite, but as soon as Sylvie jumped into the passenger seat, you sped off, looking in the wing mirror to see Casey leaned against Truck with his jaw tense and fists stuffed into his jacket pockets.
***
When you returned from Med after the call, Casey was nowhere to be found. You looked all over: the common room, Boden’s office, his own office, restroom, locker room. Nowhere. And you couldn’t ask around, in fear of being suspicious, although you could have lied and said you borrowed a book or were requesting some furlough, but you didn’t want to be caught out on that later.
In the end, you decided to go stand out on the apron for some fresh air and a good think. You were worried that he was upset about Mason coming and speaking to you earlier or about you taking the card, although you would be majorly surprised if he would be annoyed over that, seeing as he is one of the most understanding people you have ever met. What did surprise you, though, was when you looked up and saw him sitting on the roof of the firehouse in a fold-out chair.
“Jesus Christ, Casey, what are you doing up there?!”
“Just taking a moment.” He replied, and you finally noticed the ladder he had used to get up there propped up against the building. You started walking toward it to join him when you heard him stand up and walk over to it, his footsteps on the metal ringing out above your head. He slid down it skilfully, impressing you in the process.
“I would have come up there, you didn’t have to come down.” You shrugged, smirking at him slightly.
“With your fear of heights? No chance.” He chuckled.
You smiled at him. He didn’t seem annoyed. Just a little…off.
“I can see the cogs turning, Y/N. What’s up?” He said as he slyly hooked his little finger into yours. You both did this often when you wanted to show affection to one another at the firehouse but had to be discreet, just in case someone was watching.
“Are you okay?” You said, your voice a little higher than usual and brows slightly furrowed.
Matt raised an eyebrow at you. “Yeah? Why wouldn’t I be?”
“That…um…just with that Mason guy coming round earlier. I only took his card to seem polite, I have no intention of-“
“Y/N.” Matt interrupted, an amused twinkle in his eye, which made you relax slightly. “I know. I trust you, always have and always will. I love you.”
“I love you too.” You sighed contently. “And you have no idea how much I want to throw my arms around you and kiss you right now.”
He chuckled. “Me too, but Gallo’s coming this way and I’m pretty sure you don’t want to give him a show.”
You drew your hand back slowly, just in time for when Gallo emerged from the door.
“Lieutenant, Y/L/N, food’s almost done.”
“Thanks, Gallo.” You turned his way and shot him a genuine smile before following him in, Matt hot on your heels.
***
You thanked whoever was looking down on you for those minutes of peace within the firehouse, where no one was out on a call and you all got to relax, play cards, talk, read a book. The latter was one of your personal favourites, seeing as you were always engrossed in one novel or another. Talking with your friends was also another. You loved to hear about Herrmann’s kids, Gallo’s sad excuse for a love life, Severide and Kidd’s weekend getaway (although you weren’t too fond of the details, but luckily they usually skipped past those with merely a wink at each other). Right now, you and Brett were talking about the upcoming wedding of one of a previous mutual partner.
“Have you got your dress yet?” You asked her.
“Yep, got it last weekend. It’s a gorgeous blush pink maxi dress, and its so comfy. What about you?”
“Mine’s about knee length, a dark green silky material. I can’t wait to go, plus Maddison is going to look gorgeous.”
“She really is!” Brett gushed, looking over your shoulder at Matt, who was sitting three seats down at the end of the table. She lowered her voice, “Are you taking Matt as your date?”
Your eyes got a little sadder and you looked down at your fingers. “I’m not sure. I’d love to, and I probably could get away with if we said we were just going as friends, but I don’t know if we’d be able to keep it up or if they’d get suspicious.” You murmured. “I need to talk to Matt first, because it’s his call. Whatever he wants to do, I’m up for.”
She nodded gently, offering you a small smile before sitting up straighter and opening her mouth to speak, but before she could, Capp shouted from the doorway.
“Hey, Y/L/N, there’s someone outside to see you. Says his names Mason?”
You rolled your eyes, inhaling deeply before casting a glance over to Matt carefully. You got up from your chair slowly, with all eyes on you, and made your way out onto the apparatus floor.
“Hey, Y/N, how are you?” Mason beamed, making his way over to you with his arms wide open, as if he was coming for a hug.
You stayed still, arms crossed, showing him you didn’t accept the hug, and he stopped just short of you, smile a little weaker but barely altered.
“Hi Mason. What’re you doing here?” You tried to smile politely.
“Well, I wanted to ask you something. You see, I think you’re really pretty and you were so kind to me that I knew I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity on asking you out on a date. So, how does this Friday at seven sound?”
Your eyes almost shot out of your head, and you heard someone choke on their own laughter over at the squad table. ‘Glad someone’s enjoying the show.’ You thought.
“I…erm… that’s, um, very kind of you, Mason. And I really appreciate the offer, but I’m so sorry, I’m going to have to say no.” You answered, trying to convey how apologetic you felt on your face. You glanced around you, mainly at the squad table to see how they were all trying to act like they weren’t listening.
He didn’t seem to back down though, which furthered your observation of him being a little creepy. “Oh, come on, Y/N, just one date, you won’t regret it, I promise.”
Before you could reply, Severide shouted, “Hey, buddy, she said no, now get lost.” He was walking over to you to back you up, which you were extremely thankful for as you had no idea how to handle this situation to stop it getting out of control. Usually, you were pretty good at standing up for yourself and speaking your mind, but that doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate the back up from your friends when offered.
“This doesn’t concern you, pretty boy.” Mason snarled, and Severide squared his shoulders.
“What’s going on?” Matt called, coming through the common room doors to stand beside you. ‘Oh god, this could get messy.’ You thought, and you knew you had to diffuse it, and fast.
“Nothing, Casey. Mason here was just leaving, weren’t you?” You answered.
Mason seemed to soften up when you spoke. “Yeah, I was. Well, call me later, Y/N, and we can confirm that date.” He gave a toothy smile and a wink which sent a shiver down your spine, then left through the open door.
Once he was out of sight, you turned to Severide. “Thanks, Kelly, I owe you.”
“No problem, Y/N, but be careful with that guy. Something’s off about him.” He patted your shoulder as you nodded in reply, then went back over to sit at the squad table.
Casey didn’t say a word before walking through the double doors, but instead of going straight on to the common room, he took a right, walking down the corridor towards the bunk room. You waited for a moment before following him, slightly concerned. At this moment, you didn’t care if you raised anyone’s suspicions; you had a gut feeling something was off, and you needed to make sure Matt was okay.
You walked cautiously down the same route as Matt, entering the bunk room and looking straight towards his office. He was sat down at his desk, pen in hand and head rested on his fist, his brows knitted in either concentration or frustration, and you were pretty sure it was the latter. After a quick survey of the bunk room and being satisfied you were alone, you advanced towards his office, gently rapping your knuckles against the door to let him know you were there. He looked up, a blank expression on his face, and gestured for you to come in before looking back down at his incident report.
You opened the door but didn’t walk in, deciding to lean against the door frame and gauge the atmosphere first.
“Hey, you okay?”
“I’m fine.” He said a little snappily, not tearing his eyes away from his report for a second.
You bit the inside of your cheek in thought, then went and perched on the end of his bed, closing the door softly behind you. He made no effort to acknowledge your company, but he also didn’t object.
“Matt, baby, what’s wrong?” You almost whispered, despite no one being in earshot but your boyfriend.
“Nothing, like I said, I’m fine.”
“Well it doesn’t seem like it.” You said, and although the words could have been interpreted as snarky, you didn’t intend for them to be, and so you internally winced. “I didn’t mean it like that. You can talk to me, Matt, I want to listen.”
He stopped writing, and you were hopeful that he would explain, but a few minutes passed and still no words left his mouth. He turned around in his chair to face you, his eyes showing you that he was sorry, but his jaw was clenched and his left hand was still in a tight fist.
So you thought, you thought really hard as to what he was feeling and why he would be feeling like this. Had you forgotten something important? No, your anniversary wasn’t for a few more months and neither was his birthday. Had you forgotten to do the dishes? No, you both did them together last night after your meal.
And then it hit you.
He was jealous. Matthew Casey was jealous. And you smiled. A beaming smile that shone brighter than a lighthouse, because although it was annoying for him, you found it pretty funny and also very cute.
“Matt Casey…” You teased, standing up slowly and stalking towards him with your arms crossed and a tilted head. “Are you jealous?”
“What? No.” He splutters, trying to be convincing but it doesn’t work in the slightest.
You smirk at him. “Aww…Matt…”
“Fine, I guess I am a bit. It’s just…that guy, the way he was looking at you like you were his next meal, it just…it made my blood boil.”
“I know. Me too. It’s fair enough that you’re angry but you have nothing at all to be jealous of, I love you and only you.” You offer a smile, which he returns, before you check out of the window.
Seeing nobody, you placed your palms down on each arm of his chair, leaning down so you were inches away from his face.
He squinted his eyes playfully at you, smirking. “Risky.” He teased.
“Shut up.” You laughed, then locked your lips with his, giving him a searing hot kiss, your tongues meeting and fighting a battle for dominance, which he won. You explored each other’s mouths, not worrying for a second if someone would see because you wanted him, needed him, and he needed you. He bit your lip, causing you to moan into his mouth, and his lips tugged upwards into a smile.
You pulled away, breathless, and smiled, catching your bottom lip between your teeth as you dared to look into his eyes. It was a dangerous move, as his irises had turned a sinful shade of blue and all you desired was to pull him over to his bed and draw the blinds. Actually, fuck that, his chair would do.
But you managed to stand upright, clearing your throat as you felt your cheeks reddening. You regained enough composure to look back into his eyes, and he seemed more relaxed, barring the bulge that was now evident in his pants, which you were proud of causing.
“By the way, I love you too. And you didn’t have to prove it, I already know, not that I’m complaining about getting that kiss out of it.”
“Yeah, well, you’re gonna get a lot more than that tonight, seeing as you’re extremely hot when you’re jealous.” You teased, taking pleasure out of the way his eyes grew wider.
You winked at him before turning and leaving his office, swaying your hips a little more than usual, chuckling when you heard the curse he let out under his breath.
***
It was next shift, and thankfully you hadn’t heard any more from Mason, mainly because you hadn’t called him or been at the firehouse, so you were a little on edge as you turned up this morning. But it was after lunch, now, and you were convinced that he had finally come to his senses and moved on.
You were reading your book, sat at the long table facing the rest of the common room with Matt one chair away, once again sat at the head of the table. You felt his foot tracing patterns on your ankle, and when you looked up from your page and over to him, he was looking through his eyelashes at you as he read over his reports from last shift. He had a devilish smirk on his face, and he knew I was thinking of the other evening, when he pulled me into the showers to fulfil my promise, trailing hot, wet kisses along my jawline, down my neck and over my collarbone, slowly working his way down until he was on his knees in front of me, unbuckling my belt as I stood in a blissful daze, my heart racing and my breathing rapid.
In fact, I could feel it picking up again, and I knew what he was doing. It was unbelievably arousing how the risk of being caught felt, something we discovered after that event in the showers. And now Matt had begun playing a game, and so had I. A squeeze of my ass when I was folding laundry later on that day was what started it, but I got him back when I trailed my fingertips up his thigh at dinner, cupping his clothed member in my hand, which caused him to almost choke on his bite of food.
We were enjoying it, and after talking the other day back at my apartment, he told me how he didn’t mind if the others found out, but at the moment it was still fun sneaking around, which I agreed with.
“Y/L/N?”
Severide’s voice from the door startled me, but I didn’t jump, thank goodness, before I turned to look at him.
“That Mason guy is back again. Want me to kick his ass out?”
You smiled at Kelly, shaking your head gently. “Yes, but politely please, Severide.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive.”
He nodded and left, and you went back to ‘reading your book’. That was until you heard shouts coming from the apparatus floor moments later, followed by the sound of someone bursting through the double doors.
“Hey! You can’t go in there!”
“Y/N?!”
‘Oh, for crying out loud’ You complained internally, rolling your eyes before looking over to the door to see a very frantic Mason.
“There you are, Y/N. That moron was trying to stop me coming inside.”
“Yes, Mason, that’s because I asked him to.” You explained, softly, standing up and circling around the table to stand in front of him. “C’mon, lets go talk out in the corridor so we don’t disturb anyone.”
“No! I want everyone to hear this. Y/N, just give me a chance. I’m a nice guy, I’m funny, I’m smart, I’m good looking. Just say yes, you won’t regret it.”
You had to stop yourself from groaning. This guy was ridiculously desperate, and you couldn’t understand how he didn’t get the message. It was actually starting to annoy you now.
“Mason, I’m sorry, it’s a no, it’s always going to be a no. Now please, leave, before you get dragged out of here.”
“Please, Y/N, just one date, that’s all. I don’t know why you won’t agree to it.” He was walking closer and closer, but you stood your ground, despite the nervousness starting to grow within you.
“Hey! She said no.” Casey said sternly, on the verge of shouting, as he got up from his chair and came to stand beside you, wrapping his arm tightly around your waist and bringing you closer to him. “She’s said it about five times now. You’ve got your answer, now get the hell out of here before I knock your ass out.”
Mason just stood there, dumbfounded, his eyes darting between your face, Casey’s and his arm around you. “oh, man, I’m so sorry, I didn’t realise she was…I…I guess I’ll…er…” He stuttered, turning and leaving so fast you were surprised he didn’t leave scorch marks.
You exhaled deeply, scratching your forehead before turning towards Matt.
“You okay?” He asked sincerely, searching your eyes for any unease.
“Yeah, thank you.” You smiled, leaning your head on his shoulder and breathing in his scent to comfort yourself. He brought his other hand around to draw soothing circles on your back, and your heartrate began to slow back down to normal.
And then it dawned on you that you had an audience.
You heard someone clear their throat, so you straightened up slowly, leaving Matt’s embrace almost fully as you look around the room. Brett and Kidd are struggling to stifle a chuckle, Cruz looks like someone’s told him he’s pregnant and Mouch looks more confused than when he was trying to solve that crossword puzzle this morning.
“Did we…er…miss something, or are you guys just putting on a show for that guy?” Herrmann asks, trying to make sense of everything.
You and Casey smile, enjoying the revelation, albeit more prematurely than you both would have preferred.
“No, Hermann, you’ve all just been blind for the past six months.” Casey chuckled.
Herrmann’s eyes almost fell out of their sockets. “Six months?!”
You both burst out into laughter, then you turned to face Matt once again, leaning up to kiss his cheek, which is tugged upwards into a smile.
Then you both went and sat down where you were before, now only closer and with your hands intertwined upon the table, ready to be bombarded with questions from your family, ready to share your love for each other with the world.
**
Popcorn ceilings were simultaneously the worst and the best. The crumbs and clusters that fell from above when the upstairs neighbors stomped around or dropped a heavy textbook, shaking the room, were annoying to constantly pick up, especially when they covered the bed. But on mornings like this when you were wide awake at an unfathomable hour, you could stare at the patterns hidden in the ceiling to occupy your mind. You found faces and animals and even the occasional word among the speckles. The game did wonders to occupy your thoughts, letting the time tick by without you constantly checking the hour. However, the nervous churn of your stomach never fully disappeared.
Saturdays were supposed to be fun. A day of relaxation. Even if you were finishing up a project or homework, there was no rush to it. Each step could be taken at a pace that kept you calm and under control. Afterwards, you were free to do whatever your heart felt drawn towards. You could see a movie, take a walk in the park, or even stay cooped up in your dorm to binge the latest TV show. But today would not be one of recreation free from stress. Today, you were meeting up with Minseok. And there was an excitement to that, an anticipation, like you were standing in line to go backstage to meet your favorite band. But there was also a less joyful feeling underneath. Though surely your stomach was empty by now, the nauseated roared on, threatening to overspill.
“(y/n)?”
Flipping over to your side, you looked over at the other bed in the room. Willa had awoken and sat up, her hair sticking up in all directions like a cartoon. One hand rubbed the sleepiness out of a still closed eye while the other stretched out into the air as far as it would go. A long yawn stopped any other words from escaping so you waited it out. “How long have you been awake?”
You shrugged with your one exposed shoulder. “I don’t know. A while.”
“Yeesh. It’s Saturday. It’s like the holy day of sleeping in.”
You smiled at her exaggeration. “My brain just decided it was done resting.”
“Plans you’re looking forward to, perhaps?”
The question was innocent enough, if a little cheeky. It was Saturday, after all, and you did have the tendency to get so worked up over things that you couldn’t sleep, like a child on Christmas Eve unable to dream in anticipation of the next morning’s surprise. But that didn’t stop the swift panic that made your heart jump.
“Just a project I really need to get started on,” you lied smoothly as you sat up, turning so your legs now dangled off the edge of the bed. Well, it wasn’t really that much of a lie. But wasn’t it a lie when you omitted part of the truth on purpose? Fingernails digging into the cotton sheets that covered the standard dorm mattress that made your back ache, you contemplated spilling the beans ricocheting in your stomach. You were spared making a decision.
“Speaking of projects,” Willa yawned. “I’m stuck in another group where I’m sure I’ll be doing most of the work.”
You raised an eyebrow, knowing your friend’s history all too well. “And why do you think you’ll be doing all the work?”
“Because no one seemed interested in what I had to say and trying to get a time to get together was nearly impossible.”
Definite warning signs, but not unusual in a college environment. “Okay. So, make sure you get your work done. Anyone who doesn’t get their part done, take they’re name off of it. No one learns if things come easy and are done for them.”
Willa frowned. “So, you’re saying worry only about myself?”
“Sort of.” You sighed. This was your big issue with group projects. Yes, they were supposed to teach you to work with others (because there wasn’t enough of that in secondary school, apparently) but some professors didn’t care if you tried to get the others to work when they didn’t want or care to and the group suffered for it grade-wise. College in the classroom wasn’t supposed to be about life lessons – it was supposed to be about the material. “Continue to try to get them to cooperate, but if you see after a few times that it’s pointless, drop it. I’m sure someone else in your group will help out, too.”
The pout on Willa’s lips told you that she wasn’t completely on board with your suggestion. “Yeah, okay. I guess I’ll wait it out.”
“Good. In the end, it’s up to you, though.” Jumping out of bed, you headed over to the bathroom you shared with the room next door. After conducting your morning business, you went to the tiny closet and got dressed. “Want to get breakfast?”
“I can’t,” Willa said regretfully. “I’ve got other plans.”
“Okay,” you said, not the least bit hurt. You had offered out of simple politeness. The more time you spent in your friend’s presence, the more tempted you would be to let out the incoherent thoughts that refused to organize themselves in your head. Yanking on a sneaker, you grabbed your keys and bag, waving to Willa as you hurried out the door.
The student union was nearly deserted. Most who lived on campus were spending this weekend morning logically, which meant the corporate food choices were closed. Thankfully, the university-sponsored coffee shop was open. Already you were being hit with the smells of fresh pastries and dripping espresso. The cashier greeted you with a sleepy smile and waited patiently for you to make a decision. Once that was settled and you’d paid the tab, you walked over to an empty two-person table and sat down. It was only a minute or so later that the barista brought out your coffee and a warm scone. The berries baked within the dough were soft and juicy, leaking onto the surrounding pastry, which in turn soaked up the flavor in an addicting manner. You smiled to yourself with each bite.
Pulling you out of the bliss, however, was your phone screen lighting up from your peripheral. With a squint, you picked it up and read the message as you chewed. It was from Minseok, once again confirming your ten o’clock meet up time in the library. According to the digital clock located at the top of your screen, you still had about thirty minutes before you needed to head over to the library. You set the phone face down on the table without replying. The thought of seeing him again in a mere few minutes was surging you more awake then the caffeine ever could. But you knew you shouldn’t be feeling this way.
The thing was, nothing was wrong with your relationship with Erik. He was sweet, supportive, caring. He listened and paid attention to you. He was a relationship dream. But it suddenly didn’t feel like enough anymore. Were you simply getting bored? Had you peeked over the fence and seen a greener field? It felt more complicated than that, but you couldn’t put your finger on the cause. Shaking your head, you sat back in the chair and sipped on the cooled off coffee. Maybe you should cancel, make up some excuse that you were sick or that something else had come up. Or maybe you should just tell him the truth that it was a bad idea to spend time with him and his child-like laugh.
You were absolutely and utterly weak. In a flash, you were picking up your phone and sending a text that you would see him there. You lasted about five more minutes sitting in that shop before you were guzzling down the rest of your breakfast and heading out of the union to the other side of the courtyard where the library sat. It was still early, but it didn’t feel like a bad idea to go ahead and get started – or, at least, look like you’d gotten started. However, you were beaten to the punch.
Sitting in one of the old donated chairs by the front windows of the library, Minseok flipped slowly through a book, engrossed in its pages. You couldn’t read the title to know what it was about, but the athlete on the front gave you a clue that it might be about soccer. He saw you the second you stepped inside, closing the book and tossing it in his bag. “Hey, you’re early!” The smile spread quickly across his face, letting you know that your arrival well before the allotted time was not discouraged in the slightest.
A strange, gripping warmth shrouded over you. Like a hug in the middle of a harsh winter, you melted, feeling safe and comforted. An invisible rope made of steel cable was reeling you in closer to Minseok. No saw or knife in the world could sever it, you were sure. Coming here to the library felt like a final choice. Turning back would no longer be an option to you. A dark sea lied before you, but on the horizon, a possible promise of Treasure Island.
“Are you ready?”
You blinked, having gotten lost in your own metaphor. “Yeah,” you said with a smile. “Ready to learn about math. Yay.” There was absolutely no enthusiasm in your sarcastic cheer, but it made Minseok laugh. The two of you found a round table near the back of the second floor where the reference books were housed.
“So,” he beamed at you as soon as you were all unpacked, “to finish my thought from last time….”
“Yes! You had an idea!”
“Unless you were able to come up with something you wanted to do?” he offered. You snorted as your reply. He laughed. “I had a feeling.”
“So, then what’s your idea?” you challenged.
“Marketing.”
You frowned, confused. “Marketing?” You didn’t see the connection.
“Yeah.” Looking around, Minseok motioned with his head. “Come on.” You followed him away from the table, through several aisles of books until you came to a small corner where worn and peeling covers gave clues to the context between the pages. The titles you could read talked about marketing statistics and “eye-catching strategies”. Pulling a book off the shelf, he held it out for you to see.
In the Masses Eye.
“What’s this?”
“It’s called old fashioned research.”
You rolled your eyes. “I understand that part. I meant marketing... and this book in particular.”
“I think marketing might be your best angle to go with on this project,” he explained. “There’s a correlation between what people see and what makes them buy a product. A bad picture that isn’t well thought out can deter sales. According to statistics, at least.”
The hinges in your jaw came loose, leaving the bottom half of your mouth hanging open. “How did you come up with that?”
A pink hue flushed on his cheeks. He even seemed to shrink in on himself as his shoulders rose and he leaned up against the shelf. “I like things like this.”
You erupted in giggles, covering your mouth and hiding your face with the book. What was he doing to you? Collecting yourself and searching for a distraction, you pulled a few more books out of their spots and flipped through them without purpose. But soon your eyes caught on to what Minseok was originally saying. Certain pictures stuck out to you, making you stop and take a second look. It was exactly the effect you tried to achieve with your own shots. You smiled, delighted.
“See what I’m talking about?” Minseok said quietly. He didn’t say it with a cocky tone or snark, just simply inquiring.
“Yeah,” you nodded. “Yeah, I do. In fact-” A blaring song rang out from your pocket. “Shoot!” You struggled to pull your phone out, having forgotten to put the ringer on silent. It was Erik calling you. “Hello?”
“Hey, babe!” Erik greeted cheerfully. “I know I said I was going to be busy all day, but we’re taking a break so I thought you might want to grab an early lunch.”
“Oh, um.” You looked up at Minseok. He waited patiently during your conversation, lips sucked in and his gaze set on you. But there was also a tension in his stance that you couldn’t understand. It was only now hitting you that you never had that conversation with Erik. You never told him that you were even doing this extra credit, never mind who was helping you. Right now did not seem like a good time to go into those details. “I… can’t. I’m kind of already knee-deep in this project and if I stop now then I’ll lose traction. I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay. I understand. Maybe we can grab something tomorrow?”
“Um, sure. I’ll let you know.” You hung up without saying goodbye, needing desperately to end the awkward exchange. Quickly turning the ringer to silent, you clumsily shoved the device back in your pocket. An odd tension hung in the air between you and Minseok, neither sure of how to continue the earlier conversation.
“So, was that your boyfriend?” Minseok finally asked in a quiet tone. He made “boyfriend” sound like a curse word.
“Erik,” you confirmed with a nod. “He’s an artist. Right now he’s working on the sets for the theatre department.” You weren’t sure why that information needed to be shared, but it was out before you could think.
Minseok bobbed his head, but you had a feeling he was only half-listening. “You guys been together long?”
“A few years.”
“Ah.”
Something along the lines of defeat seemed to glaze over his eyes as they shifted to the floor. You didn’t like seeing him in this state. A pain manifested itself in your chest. You certainly preferred the happier, more enthusiastic Minseok who bounced on his feet in constant excitement and tilted his head to amplify his attention. That constant feeling of guilt had done a one-eighty on you. Now instead of feeling it towards Erik, you felt it for the person in front of you. On their own, your fingers reached out. They hovered in the empty space, unsure of the right move. You longed to caress his face in comfort. But that would be inappropriate; crossing a line that should have been a mile wide. Yet stepping over it seemed as easy as stepping over a shallow creek.
You willed the power to pull back and let your hand drop to your side. Minseok, however, still managed to take some contact, brushing his fingers against the back of your hand as he took the books from you. An electric shiver ran up your spine. When his skin was gone, you almost whimpered. You questioned how well your fingers would fit in the spaces between his own. And if that electricity would go on forever at the prolonged contact.
“We should get back to the project.”
“Right.” You cleared your throat. Hiding in this back corner was giving your brain ideas and following down paths that were clearly unmarked, dangerous even.
Back at the table, the two of you worked on the project, bouncing around ideas of how to use the statistics of marketing that the resources gave and applying it to your own photography. A few hours later, you had the full back bone of your project completed. All you needed was to break down the expressions and equations that would back your claims. But your brain was done for the day. However, that didn’t mean you were done with Minseok.
“You know, I just realized I don’t know much about you,” you said as you packed away your things.
Minseok shrugged as he gathered up the books to put back in their homes. “I’m not sure if there’s much to know.”
“Everyone has something worth knowing.”
“Touche.” The smile was coming back. Good. Perhaps it was selfish, but you were feeling lighter due to his own lifting mood. “But I don’t know where to start. I mean… I’m a math major-”
“That I already knew,” you laughed.
“Right. Um….”
“Do you live on campus?” you offered as a starting point.
He shook his head. “No. I live out of town, a ways out. My friends and I live in a farmhouse in the woods.”
“A farmhouse in the woods!” you exclaimed. That sounded like a dream. Or the setting of a YA novel. “How many of you live there?”
“Including me? Twe- Nine.”
You were confused as to why he suddenly changed numbers, but the sad look that was here and gone in his eyes made you think it was best not to ask. “Nine? Wow. Isn’t that crowded?”
“Sometimes. But really, it's more comforting than anything. We’re like brothers so it doesn’t feel as overwhelming as it sounds. Although, sometimes I do really need the quiet.” The Minseok from before the phone call was nearly completely back. The weight was dropping from your shoulders as you saw the tension leave his.
“Where do you go then? When you need quiet?”
He smirked. “I go for a run. In the woods.”
The wolf from the clearing flashed in your mind, as well as the campers who were attacked. “Isn’t that dangerous?”
Minseok shook his head. “Not for me. I know those trees pretty well.”
You scoffed. Boys and their confidence.
Standing up and throwing your bag over your shoulder, Minseok walked you out of the library, telling you more about his roommates, mostly about Jongdae, his hot headed best friend. In turn, you told funny stories about you and the shenanigans Willa dragged you into. So lost in the conversation, you stayed standing in the middle of the courtyard. You should have said goodbye, but you kept putting it off, bringing up new subjects to keep talking.
“Minseok!”
The two of you turned to see a small group of students coming your way, one waving their arm in the air with extreme enthusiasm. Minseok cringed as they came up, scratching the space behind his ear. He gave off the air that being caught like this was the last thing he wanted, even if the scene was innocent enough.
“You didn’t tell us that you were going to be here today,” the tallest boy said. He had a jolly, lopsided smile and ears that stuck out.
Minseok shrugged. “I forgot.” His eyes flickered over to you. “Oh, um, guys, this is... (y/n). (y/n), this Chanyeol, Baekhyun, Sehun, and Jongin. They’re some of the friends I live with.”
“Oh!” You lit up at being able to meet a few of the roommates. “Hi! It’s nice to meet you!”
“You, too!” the one who Minseok pointed out as Baekhyun said. He eyed Minseok suspiciously, a sly grin on his face. “We were going to get some lunch. Do you guys want to join us?”
You opened your mouth to accept the invitation, but Minseok beat you.
“Actually, we were just saying bye.”
You looked at him, confused. Sure, technically you were done working on the project, but you were enjoying this down time after the fact. He hadn’t seem like he wanted to part either. At least, before his friends showed up.
Jongin seemed to catch on to the contorted expression on your face. “Are you alright?”
It took you a second to absorb his question, but when you did, you slapped on a fake smile. “Yeah, of course. I’ve got to meet up with my boyfriend, but thank you for the invite.”
“Maybe another time.”
“Yeah, maybe. It was nice to meet you, though.” You gave a slightly less enthusiastic expression to Minseok. “Thanks again for your help. I’ll see you later.”
He gave you a small wave. “I’ll see you later.”
You walked away, shoulders drooping. The switch that happened before your eyes made your head hurt, like whiplash. Was Minseok… embarrassed to be seen with you? You didn’t think there was anything particularly shameful about you. But what else would make him not want you around for lunch with the very people he was talking about mere minutes before with joy and laughter? It didn’t make any sense. All you could focus on was the shut down. As you headed for the theatre, you tried to tell yourself that there was no reason to be upset. He was not your close friend. He was merely a… tutor, for lack of a better word. And that’s all he would be, apparently.
You approached the theatre doors, unsure of where else to go. If you thought your feelings were stirred up this morning, now they felt like they were stumbling off the world’s most twisted roller coaster, unable to even stand on their own. Just how bruised would you be when you finally fell down?
