y'know, i actually have almost the entire fic planned out. i haven't intentionally abandoned the story... about once or twice a month the document gets opened and i'll write a few paragraphs, though i know that's not much. i feel like i've been going through something weird for the past year or so. i don't really know how to explain it properly. i haven't written a damn thing in so long.

between low engagement, me being sick all the time, and life being stressful (mostly this), this fic just hasn't come together the way i hoped it would. The Road Not Taken is still massively important to me and somewhat of a personal magnum opus so, i'll finish it... but i do not know when.

ideas below. i wrote more than i thought, and it's gotten me really excited about the fic again! please let me know if there's anything specific you'd like me to go into detail about

alright firstly:

the next big thing is what i've been calling the intervention arc. obviously we have to address some of the heavier emotional issues that both Annie and the reader have. nothing can move forward until our main characters are communicating again! both with each other and with their support system.

vacation arc! i want to write more about what's left of the world post-Rumbling on a global scale. i also need a reason to get them away from the cottage for a decent chunk of time so i thought i'd have them explore a bit.

there will be a subplot about the cats who live around the cottage, just for funsies. i have a chapter title planned for it and everything lmao

there will be a pretty major division amongst the eldians later on about some of them wanting to go back and live on Paradis. to be completely honest, i haven't decided how i want that to resolve and who, if anyone, is going to leave. but we have definitely not heard the last about Paradis. some assorted thoughts elaborating on that, and how the ending could potentially play out either way:

i don't know i should give EVERYONE a happy ending or not. my initial plan was to write what i think the characters would actually do in this post-Rumbling scenario i've imagined (let's call this Ending 1), but over time i've started to change my mind and be like: i'm not the mangaka and that ain't my job, so i should write my story the way i want. aka FUCK isayama, everybody gets a steven universe-esque happy ending (we'll call this one Ending 2) even though it might not be totally consistent with the way characters are written in aot.

i'd love to hear people's opinions about either ending btw

the largest difference that giving everyone a happy ending would have, is whether or not i decide to include Historia. i really adore her and in theory i want to give her a better ending considering how tragic she is, but where she's left in the end of the manga puts her in direct opposition with the narrative and the "not my monkeys, not my circus" attitude that the narrator feels so strongly about 😖 it would make me too sad to include Hisu at all if she's on the wrong side of things.

I want everyone to move away from all the politicking. they really don't have any business doing all o' that in my opinion... they're all early 20s AND child soldiers so like. please rest guys, you can be done with the whole saving the world thing...

after all, the idea of stepping away from the alliance and NOT continuing to involve themselves in global affairs IS the metaphorical road not taken

i do know how i want the fic to end in terms of Annie and reader, and it will be good. i don't wanna oversell it or hype it too much and then have it be underwhelming... but i'm hoping that their love story plays out in a way that people will call beautiful.

if i decide to go with Ending 1 then it will very much be a bittersweet narrative about how people naturally grow apart over time but everywhere you look there will be new sources of happiness and fulfillment etc.

Ending 2 would be much more idealistic. probably a bit unrealistic but it will give the characters ending that would make them happy and make us happy. true fix it fic style.

i think either would be cathartic for me to write in different ways so i really don't know where i want this to go yet. probably gonna wing it and see what feels right chapter by chapter.

Fugio is obsessed with Chichi and has been for a very long time now, and yet besides this he had never been found out until the very end and when Fugio goes to repent, we never know how his feelings are resolved or if he ever loses interest. Sou's whole reasoning to going to Univeil was because of Kisa, and the others don't realize his feelings towards Kisa until after Oh Rama, Havenna and that's why Mitsuki is originally chosen as Al Jeanne, because they realized the extent of Sou's feelings for Kisa and wanted to atleast make it a bit less obsessive until that was thrown out the window by Sou figuratively trying to throw the performance. In the end he learns how to control himself and not discount others for Kisa similar to how Fugio repents and invites Jire with him, the very man he was fighting with when courting Chichi.

Miguel is IN LOVE LOVE with Rukiora, that much is obvious. In Fumi's ad-libbing of Miguel, he speaks of spending his nights awake thinking of Rukiora before he is forced to sleep. Alongside this, Miguel puts in flippant flirting with his true feelings to Rukiora. This completely mimics Fumi and how it's revealed that he has wanted Kisa the entire time and how he was mixing stupid flirting with his real flirting. And you know what happens in the end? Miguel gets enough money to move back to his home. Fumi graduates and gets a place to live in for the Tamasaka theater, not including how he resolves his family situation after Oh Rama, Havenna just like how Miguel went back to his family. Except Miguel didn't get the girl and Fumi does.

Shirota... oh my goodness the implications. Rukiora is probably the only character who genuinely doesn't know Chichi's lies and still cares for Chichi. She will go out of her way for Chichi, as shown in singing another song because of Chichi, and even gets mad at herself when she feels betrayed for Chichi lying to her. Shirota, while not such a happy go lucky person like Rukiora, he cares for Kisa immensely. He gets protective when Minorikawa gets a little too comfortable with Kisa and always accounts for Kisa. He is the person who is constantly watching her and making sure she is okay, as shown in the summer when he noticed she wanted to swim but for some reason couldn't and so instead they both find shelter in a nice cave that reflected the water. Another similarity is how Shirota feels betrayed by Kisa in at least two of the affection events, but still cares for her. He feels betrayed because Kisa doesn't trust him even though Kisa has helped him, and so now he wants her to rely on him. He is upset she can't trust him, similar to how Rukiora feels betrayed because of the lack of truth with Chichi. However, both end the same with Rukiora and Shirota forgiving Chichi and Kisa and it ends happily. The final scene with the priest even makes sense as well! Shirota forgives Kisa, like how Chichi is forgiven by Rukiora, but Kisa and Chichi continue to lie. However, now with the way it's framed, with Shirota knowing Kisa's secret and being okay with her lying, it feels more like Rukiora knows and actively accepts this fact about Chichi like Shirota who knows Kisa's secret and still lets her lie. He no longer feels betrayed by this fact, and he even admits after the performance that he knew for awhile, but was more hurt by the fact that Kisa didn't trust him with that information, which puts Rukiora into even MORE perspective. Rukiora says when Miguel lies about the Bakuu cookie being Mugwort flavor that at least he was being honest, indicating that if Chichi came out with the truth instead of having it forcefully come out, Rukiora probably wouldn't have felt so betrayed. I could go forever on this character haha

Suzu, while I haven't completed his route yet, is almost an open book in this. The biggest thing of note is how his feelings are kept so far away from Chichi. Jire cares for Chichi, loves her even, but never actively shows it until it blows over in his face. So far, Suzu seems to have liked Kisa for awhile, but has constantly pushed it down and away, constantly keeping it out of his— and by extension Kisa's— reach. Similar to how Jire doesn't let Chichi know his feelings till the very last moment. Also interesting to note the dynamic of both Jire and Fugio, because they are complete opposites to Suzu and Sou but if you look a little closer they are very much similar. Fugio is a showman first and foremost, but underneath lies heavy love and even heavier obsession, and that is Sou. Despite Sou being awkward and shy and nervous, in the final performance he can break out of it and become someone he is confident to be, and that is a showman. Now Jire, Jire layers his feelings with other things, hides and squashes it because he doesn't want to have hive feelings blown back into his face by a rejection because he knows he has nothing to offer Chichi, and that is Suzu. Suzu however is bright and cheerful and definitely shows his emotions, yet he also buries them. He likes Kisa but can't admit it to himself, he suspects Kiss is a girl but can't come to terms with that. He layers these feelings with training and cheer and jokes, because at the end of it all he is scared to lose what he has with Kisa. He cares for her, likes her, and doesn't want to ruin that friendship with her during Oh Rama, Havenna. It's also really interesting how often Jire and Fugio butt heads, especially because Sou and Suzu aren't like that unless you count the Fall Performance, which is where I bet Neji definitely got inspiration. However if you take into account how both of them like Kisa, and both of them are first and foremost worried about Kisa when they have a falling out, it makes a bit more sense. Anyways I love all of these kiddos and I will do something more indepth with Suzu when I finish his route (HOPEFULLY SOON!!!!)

Buddy Daddies - there's this same vibe because of Sui (not to mention, both Sui and the kid in this series had the same seiyuu). i even made a post showing parallels for these two series (you can check my post here if you haven't seen it). like they're both families but not you're typical family.

Dungeon Meshi - both series also feature cooking of monsters, not really in a super gourmet way, but in a way that would still make you want to eat. I also read a bit ahead of the mange for both series so just a fair bit of warning that DunMeshi will be more complicated as the story progresses while Tonsuki maintains its pace.

Amaama to Inazuma - this is a story about a single father whose wife passed away leaving him and her only daughter behind. the father is a teacher and one of his students owns a restaurant. the student, who's struggling with cooking, made an offer that they all cook together so both of them can make delicious meals. there's a bit of angst since it's not been long after the teacher's wife passed away but it's also a very healing series to watch.

Himesama "Goumon" no Jikan desu - a unique series where the princess was held captive and subjected to "torture" but in a different way. this also heals the soul and features foodie from time to time.

Rokuhou-dou Yotsuiro Biyori - a bunch of ikemen cooking!! lol. anyways, the owner inherited the restaurant from his grandfather. every character has their own specialty and also features stories of the people eating at their cafe.

Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu - another isekai that I also like. the MC is OP but he rarely has to show what he can do because the other characters are powerful enough to get the job done. just like Mukouda, the MC here was trying to be a merchant instead of an adventurer.

Isekai Ojisan - this is the story of an uncle who got isekaid but was able to to return back to his own world after 17 years (he was in a state of coma). so what's the highlight now? since he was gone for a while, he missed a lot of what transpired for the past years and it's his nephew's task to keep him up to date. he likes playing video games when he was young. there are too many retro games mentioned here and i couldn't even relate since i don't play but i still had fun watching this.

Isekai de Mofumofu Nadenade suru Tame ni Ganbattemasu - another isekai full of fluff. of course, there's a conflict that the MC is trying to resolve despite her young age but it's 90% pure fluff.

Amanda kinda did a lot of harm to her case/the public perception of her credibility (even if it could be an understandable response to stress, it is unhelpful and new claims/stating she had evidence and then admitting she didn't brought a lot of public doubt. Some people have begun no longer trusting her claims at all. I personally don't think that's fair, and that she still absolutely deserves to be heard, treated with respect, and be allowed the same chance to provide evidence as anyone else. However, I do understand why people may have begun to mistrust her or given her claims less weight).

Dream, by remaining quiet outside of his one statement, effectively didn't give people any bait or anything to work with outside of his one response. This gave people a chance to calm down, look at what's been presented, and come to terms with the fact we don't currently have answers and we might not for awhile yet. If he is really taking legal action, then the wait is understandable, and from what I've seen, most people have seen remaining quiet at the smart choice.

Kersplusion on r/dreamwastaken 2 has actually been running polls every so often, which, while absolutely not perfect (they changed question wording, utterly belothed) and certainly going to have biases, do reveal an interesting trend, given that roughly the same number of users have been polled and we can assume that it's going to at least roughly the same population of users over time.

In that roughly one day period, nearly 3% of people who thought the incident was real dropped off. 15% of people switched (likely because "some of it is fake" was changed into "the sexting is fake") into either "No crime was committed" or "Still waiting". Since Saturday, the number of people who believe the sexting was real has sharply dipped to just 3.75%. The number of people waiting has dipped by about 4%, and the number of people who think the sexting is fake is up by a little over 6%.

Now, again, these numbers aren't perfect by any means. The wording of questions changed, and plenty of biases in the way the questions were written. But I do think that it reveals a very interesting trend. Despite Dream having only made one statement on the matter, the number of people who think he's guilty has been steadily dropping. Whether this is because of external factors or not, it is still revealing that apparently, "shut up and go talk to a lawyer" has (within the limitations of these polls), been an effective public opinion management strategy compared to the alternative.

Now, again, I will restate my own personal belief that I am firmly in the waiting category. I don't think we have enough evidence to make a call one way or another. I want all parties treated with respect, and to be given a chance to make their case in a more rational setting. I just wanted to offer this data up because I did find the trends interesting. I also think that it will help offer assurance, that no, at least within this polled population, people do not appear to be assuming that silence is guilt.

Of all the people Jean has come to find gifts for, Tsuki is by far the hardest. There are so many things she wants to gift to him. So many simple things that he has been denied throughout the course of his long and perilous life. But while the novelty of an ugly winter sweater or a batch of homemade cookies may convey some of what she wants him to know, it still falls short of the gravity of compassion she wishes to bestow upon him. 

So this Winter, as the year draws to a close and the lantern rite looms on the horizon, it is an envelope that she gives to the former Wanderer. Just a small little thing, sealed with a wax stamp that bears the Gunnhildr family crest. Contained within that elegant paper is a simple key to the place she now calls home and a note that conveys a sentiment that perhaps carries more weight than the outside world can ever truly comprehend.

This, still, is a strange concept to him. The idea that a time of the year can seemingly shift an entire nation and beyond, in unison, and have everyone in an auto-piloted endeavor to shove it in each other's faces. This goes FAR beyond some annual festival, he's noticed. The decor stays up for weeks, mora passed around aplenty for materialistic trading, and where, normally, he may have been able to tuck himself into a tree for an extended spell of silence, he CAN'T, now, what with some fashion of festivities going on every single night.

Perhaps it's the ' most wonderful time of the year ' for those actually INVOLVED in it, but to him, it feels like it's more trouble than it's worth ( and, a right detriment to his already fragile nerves ).

So what, then, keeps him lingering outside of Mondstadt, in particular, watching how the town evolves day by day? Lights strewn and the Angel's Share more packed than usual. Gift exchanges at the Anemo Archon's statue, sometimes with tears ( a proposal, a baby announcement... alright, so ' gifts ' aren't always materialistic, then, he learns ). Holiday carols and seasonal plays at the fountain, whilst food and drink is passed around. He loathes the thought of admitting it seems somewhat NICE... that he would dare YEARN for something like this, even if he knows it would only end up overwhelming him.

The Acting Grand Master, though, is the exception. Though not a modicum of understanding exists in regards to why she endeavors, so fiercely, to take care of and INCLUDE him, he never turns her down despite it. Like a lost puppy, he follows her out of town, away from the hustle and bustle of Mondstadt as yet another party kicks off. She's come to know him relatively well, he fears, and it's likely why whatever she wishes to speak with him about will be done outside the city.

Away from interruptions, away from prying eyes, away from an atmosphere she knows he won't like.

" If you need help with something, just say so, moth--- ugh. Jean. " the Wanderer mumbles. He won't hesitate to, she should KNOW this, considering he's one of few people who even bothers to make sure she doesn't kill herself amidst all the duties she takes on. The envelope, extended towards him, then, earns her a sigh, like he'd had the audacity to forget the kind of person she was. Of course she would make sure to include him in her pot of generosity, no matter how much he may act like he doesn't want to be. It's why she continues to hold out the envelope to him with that... gentle, PATIENT smile of hers, and doesn't force him to accept it while he battles with himself over why he should in the first place.

Is it to make HER happy? Or, is it because he wants to know how it feels to be given something, when all his life, everything has been TAKEN?

Thumb glides against the fold, carefully separating it from the adhesive, and as he pulls both the key and the note from its confines, he shoots her a very confused look. " What is this? " Obviously, he could just read the note to find out, but forgive him for not being a fan of the unknown. As she gestures for him to read the note, he sighs and relents... and that's where the interaction stops for several moments.

He reads it once. Reads it twice. Flips it over to look for something else he may have missed, and when nothing is there, he looks at her. To the soft eyes that have only ever gazed upon him with kindness and adoration, and the even softer smile that he feels, deep down, he doesn't deserve to see.

He hasn't had a home in so very long. Not a proper one to go back to, at least, besides Lesser Lord Kusanali's domain. It doesn't matter that he, in a way, doesn't need one--- it isn't as if he functions off of food and sleep like mortals do, but he wanders largely because he doesn't HAVE one to return to. If he keeps on the move, keeps occupied, he needn't worry about everything WRONG with him ( and it's a wonder that's not ALWAYS on his mind, because there's a LOT. )

Tsuki ducks his head as he pulls the key from the envelope and squeezes it within his palm, as if he fears it may up and disappear, or get lost, if he doesn't clutch onto it as hard as he can. In a swift motion, he swipes his opposite arm against his eyes, growing in silent frustration at how futile his efforts were proving to banish his emotions. Eventually, though, he gives up, and slowly steps forward, leaning his face into her body with a stupidly childish hiccup.

He can't say thank you right now, or even BEGIN to verbally convey just how much this means to him right this very minute, but he hopes his inability to get himself together is proof enough that this is a gift he does not mind at all. Even if he's far, far older than her, she still feels like the mother he never had, but always needed, and maybe this is the gods' way of finally showing him MERCY, by giving him the one thing he has always wanted.

the 'moon is beautiful' thing comes from a comment supposedly made by Natsume Sōseki regarding the importance of respecting cultural elements when translating. he is said to have told a student that while it's fine for a character to confess with "i love you" in english, it would be out of place in japanese - they would normally use a more indirect approach, e.g. looking at the moon and saying it's beautiful (while expecting the other person to understand that it's really the moment that's beautiful, i.e. being intimate with the person... you get the idea). though it may just be an urban legend, it got popular (in japan) because it kinds of highlight an east - west difference in the way of thinking. plus it's really good to spark debates over the nature of translation. all of this to say, stating that it can mean "i love you" is kind of missing the point. like he could have said the exact same thing about the smell of flowers or the sound of the wind.

When I looked up the phrase I found the same story with the disclaimer that there are no direct sources claiming that the encounter really happened, making it a probable urban legend. I chose the phrase "unclear origin" based on the idea that it's not known who came up with the legend, but for the next round I might change it to "origin in an urban legend" or something.

However, the fact that it became a meme/trope based on the story and started being used in both anime and manga with the specific meaning of "I love you" makes it a codephrase thing or a saying. The point isn't that it's just an example of cultural translation and could've been something else in the story, the point is that "the moon is pretty means I love you" became a thing due to this story and if it's used that way today I think it's valid to refer to it as an established saying regardless of its origins.

Note that I never said it means "I love you" (which the submission said), only that "it can be used as an indirect/poetic way of saying 'I love you'", which I think gets its usage across. But I think that if tsuki wins the match, I'll add something about translation and cultural differences to the explanation.
