Episode 9 was all about expression and encouragement, and it was amazing!!

This episode wasn't about questioning Rei's love for Kazuki and Miri, because everyone knows he loves them! We know, Rei knows, Kazuki knows and even Miri knows. No, this episode is about Rei's troubles with expressing his love and affection.

Rei grew up in an environment where showing emotions - having emotions - was frowned upon, so it's understandable that he has trouble with it. But after the events of the last episode, it's obvious that he wants to take it further. I think it's worth it to note that Miri seemed to have no issues with Rei not outwardly encouraging her in the conventional way as Kazuki does, and it's Rei himself (and to an extent Kazuki and other parents) that makes him feel the need to cheer and show encouragement to Miri.

Encouragement and support had a big importance in this episode, and it's shown in a lot of different ways, but especially in 2 situations:

The first instance is about Rei trying to encourage Miri. In this instance, Rei's need for showing his love got an opportunity in sports' day, and while he did at first question the need for support, it's more so that he questions why Miri needs support from him, rather than why Miri needs support in general. Rei sees Kazuki make a restaurant-worthy feast and feels that his rice balls are inadequate and unnecessary in comparison. He sees Kazuki shout and scream his encouragement to Miri and thinks that since Kazuki is already showing loud support to Miri, then maybe his support is not needed. Rei feels worser when his actual effort to cheer Miri ended with her losing the race. Logically, it's not anyone's fault, no one blames him for it, but that's not what he feels. All he knows is that he fucked up, and that he should stay out of it now.

But that's not the end of it. Miri and her friends loved the onigiri Rei felt were unwanted. She sees the word "Family" and immediately drags Rei to the race because she needs both of her dads, and family is not family without either of them. It makes Rei feel needed, and his efforts appreciated.

The second instance is about Kazuki trying to encourage Rei. In an exaggerated sense, if Rei doesn't feel any emotion, then Kazuki feels every single emotion in painful intensity all the time. He cries when he's sad, he screams when he's angry, he practically never holds back. Kazuki knows Rei can't do that even if he wants to, so he does what he can: Encourage Rei to put effort, however small it is. He's proud when Rei makes the onigiri ("You couldn't even make cup ramen, and now you are doing this!","Miri will like it!"), he comforts Rei when he's feeling guilty about "ruining" Miri's race, he includes Rei in his conversation with the other moms but doesn't push him to socialise with them and a lot more. He appreciates Rei's efforts because he knows how difficult it is for him to do stuff like this. He's just so understanding and nice about it, and that's exactly what Rei needs.

[P.S. Kazuki feels happy about the word "family" being used to describe them, which is a complete contrast to his aversion to the word "Dads" in the earlier episodes and I find it hella cute.]

It's about doing your best, reassuring your loved ones, making each other feel wanted, and above all, redefining the conventional meaning of "family".

I would die for them.

on todays episode of Things I Realized While Eating Dinner:

epsilon was always much more effective at. well Functioning in general than alpha was. he was better at taking charge, contributing in combat situations, getting people to listen to him, and just being Generally Useful than alpha ever was. alpha, however, couldn't use his gun properly, no one listened to him, and for the most part he hadnt the slightest clue what he was doing.

its because epsilon learned to be a computer program, while alpha only ever wanted to be a person.

epsilon always functioned by augmenting the success of his teammates and boosting their functionality, unconcerned with his own. running their suits, holding their files, doing computer program stuff. he learned how to effectively be an ai and exist for those around him, no pursuit of his own self plauging him. theres more to that, with his whole character being built around him being an extension of someone else and him learning to live with that, struggling to find a self when everyone around him wanted him to be someone he wasnt. i think his time spent traveling with carolina was a real healing period, and he came back to the reds and blues much more sure of himself and ready to exist for their sake. in the end, it all came full circle as he gave every last chance of ever being a person with them for the hope of their success; sacrificing his corporeal existence to literally become energy for them to run on.

alpha, however, obviously never knew he was an ai until it was far too late, and even then died in spite of it. he wanted so badly to be everything that he wasn't: a person, a human, to mean something to someone. he appointed himself team leader in an attempt to feel important and needed, and he sucked so bad at it because he was grabbing at possibilities so far detatched from himself it was hopeless. he sucks with his gun because hes not meant to shoot it. he can't make decisions because he's meant to be a follower. he wanted so desperately to be something he wasnt. he was quicker to assume he was a ghost than that he was anything less than human. when wash told him he was an ai, he did Not believe it and wanted Nothing to do with it. he did inevitably go with wash, but it seemed as if he was trying to prove wash wrong, so deep in denial that he had convinced himself he could survive the emp, and had to prove it not only to wash, but to himself.

OML LOOK AT THE TWO BOYS!!!!! XDDDDDDDDDD I guess I have been starved of caption writing for long enough to do this, so.... here we go!

One of the things about this duo that is. Making me shake and yell is that, technically speaking, they're kinda opposites. But not really. They're simular, but different. In terms of headcanons — that is for sure. Let me explain.

Gumball is the star of the show. It's his world for a reason — if Gumball stops existing, the World (as in, the extraterrestrial omnipotent forces of scriptwriters) is going to do everything in its power to return things to status quota [See also: "The Static"]. The eyes are all on them. They can't escape being Universe's favourite boy. He suffers and doesn't quite know that, being shoved from one wacky situation into another, often being misinterpreted and laughed at, without proper guidance (this Gumball angst post has rewired my brain and you're gonna have to Get Over It).

As for Grave, he's a one-off character. He's starved of attention both in meta and in-universe sense. Why, you may ask? Well, because I don't believe that a child of loving, attentive parents would earn money via illegal burger selling. And rap during work without any specific purpose, only to entertain himself (amd maybe, as intention, others). He's nowhere and everywhere, possibly existing in the background for much longer than presented, with Mr Small referencing a guy who left EJHS for supposedly lying and working at the cemetary. Very interesting coincidence.

So, we have a guy about whom barely anyone strongly cares, and a three-episode character. Both are well-deep into humour as coping mechanism (with Gumball it's confirmed; with Grave — cutting up dead animals as a teen is definetely traumatic). Both are selfish in their own right. And both probably feel lonely!

But with Grave being adopted by Needlemeyers (because of course he is), that adds extra interest. Now he's directly tied to a person who suffers from Gumball's hijinks. So how would he feel meeting Gumball? And how would he feel after finding out Gumball has their own mental struggles? Would there be a sense of kinship? Of the need to guide the young cat through life? And considering that Needlemeyers would greatly care of Grave, what would Gumball feel when hearing of mothers, who DON'T throw their child into a desert to prove his worth?

Oh, and. Don't forget about the queerness. And gaming. Never forget. These fools are like that one meme: "-What do you think of gay marriage? -As far as I'm aware, all marriage is gay marriage." They are nigh interchagable. And I love their moronic energy.
