Riverdale: The Sweet Hereafter
"Riverdale" was a show I watched back in 2017. Everyone I knew was watching the show at that time. I started watching it during secondary school when, as I mentioned, everyone was into it. If someone wasn't watching, you would probably hear, "You must watch this iconic media piece." Okay, that's a bit far-fetched, but someone would recommend it if you were into shows like "The Vampire Diaries" or "Pretty Little Liars." Both of those shows had ended, and "Riverdale" stepped in to provide a sense of comfort—a dark show with a big mystery. That was the formula for almost every teen TV show. It filled a void for those of us who had just finished those shows and introduced us to iconic characters: Archie Andrews, the all-American teenager; Betty Cooper, the girl next door; Jughead Jones (skip); Veronica Lodge, the she-wolf of Wall Street and Cheryl Blossom, the red-haired diva.
With the show having 13 episodes and being released weekly on Netflix, it gained a cult following in my school. Coming into school, when the last few episodes aired, I heard phrases like "Bughead forever" or "Barchie forever." It was a debate, and I was Team Barchie, but that's a story for another time. Still, the show stood on its own, with people creating their own Riverdale fan accounts and collecting memorabilia. The show could do no harm...
However, it did; yes, I still enjoyed it. I remained invested. I watched the slow decline of the show in my school. It became so far-fetched that even the die-hard season one fan began to fade; no one was watching anymore, and the sense of community was gone. People no longer praised the show for its stylistic choices; instead, they questioned the writing itself. Remember that moment when Archie's retort to a character dropping out of high school for drug dealing was, "That means you haven't known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football"? It was jarring, to say the least.
Riverdale became notorious for continually one-upping itself as if unpredictability was its sole mission. Who could have predicted discussions about tickling fetishes involving high school students? Payment aside, it was still an eyebrow-raising narrative choice. This was the show's identity – a whirlwind from steamy encounters to preppy murders, cults, and bombs. At the same time, characters managed to attend school and perform musicals such as Carrie, Heathers, Hedwig, and you won't believe this: The American Psycho the Musical… Oh yes, it exists, and pursue higher education.
The show recently ended with an unexpected detour into the 1950s – an era fraught with its own set of questions considering the show's approach to sensitive issues. How did it all unfold? The characters gained superpowers through an open door in an alternate universe, setting the stage for a dramatic series of events. As Season Five drew close, Cheryl stumbled upon the chilling account of her ancestor's demise and unwittingly triggered a spell. Meanwhile, Archie and Betty found themselves in a passionate tryst just as a bomb detonated underneath them. The convergence of these chaotic elements led to a counter spell, and I'll leave it to you to experience the madness firsthand. Go watch the show, please…
The show ended with everything I wished for; it's everything I wanted an ending. I knew there wouldn't be a big bad or something catching my eye for another season. The tale had reached its final chapter. As the curtain fell on Riverdale, I saw a farewell to beloved characters and the town itself, a nostalgic journey from past to present, and now the vacant town. It was something sweet; it was bite-sized. There will always be a question from others about why I hold this show near my heart. It's because it was there for every moment of my life. The show ran for six years! When I was in college, I was still watching the episodes. My uncle and I were big Archie Comics fans. If you didn't know, Riverdale is based loosely…very loosely to the Archie Comics, and my uncle would have given me a comic every time I visited, every birthday, and every Christmas. Riverdale wasn't his cup of his, but it was mine. I catch myself rephrasing dialogue while I rewatch the show.
Goodbye Riverdale

I’ve just finished reading The Final Gambit (the third book in The Inheritance Games series) and I’m currently rewatching The Vampire Diaries for the umpteenth time, and I couldn’t help noticing a particular parallel between them both. So in the show, you’ve got the whole love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon right? Well, I feel like The Inheritance Games has taken inspiration from that for their own love triangle:
You’ve got the good brother (Stefan / Grayson), the wilder and less predictable brother (Damon / Jameson) and the girl who has no knowledge of a particular world until she’s basically dragged into the middle of it (Elena / Avery). On top of that, the two brothers both liked the same girl before the new one came into the picture (Katherine / Emily).
Saying that though, The Inheritance Games books are not completely focused around the whole love triangle element: it’s a part of a cleverly written, well thought out story that I became totally invested in. If you haven’t read the books already, it’s kind of like Knives Out with a lot more mystery thrown into the mix. Also, the first book is getting adapted into a TV series for Amazon Prime, so I strongly recommend you read the books before it comes out.

The Vampire Diaries Series Finale Predictions
Tumblr media
Guys, tomorrow is the day we´ve been dreading. I guess I can answer this question for all of us; Are we ready for the finale?:
Tumblr media
!!Obviously do not read if you don´t watch Season 8!!
First off, it has been made public that one major character won´t make it out alive in this finale. Entertainment Weekly was on set for the final day of filming in January, and they described the scene as follows:
“Elena Gilbert’s crying. Standing in the Mystic Falls cemetery where she’s said many goodbyes — and even a few hellos — Elena’s surrounded by everyone she loves. Well, almost everyone. One person is missing. Did we forget to mention that this is a funeral? … This is a goodbye — and it’s a big one.”
Oh goodie! I will definitely prepare a truckload of tissues...
These are my prediction for this finale. Let´s take a look at the deaths first:
Theory No.1: Stefan dies.
TVD started with Stefan first sentence: “For over a century, I have lived in secret; hiding in the shadows, alone in the world. Until now. I am a vampire. And this is my story. ” It would be totally possible it will end with him dying as well.  He also looked pretty sad when he faced Elena in the promo (or possible Katherine who knows?) so maybe there will be some kind of spell that leads to his demise. Or he offers the cure that is coursing in his veins to Damon so he can live the human life he wanted with Elena. Also, if hell survives, I think Katherine would love nothing more to have Stefan with her. It will also make up for turning Damon all those years ago.
Theory No. 2 Damon dies.
First look at the season´s promo pic:
Tumblr media
Damon looks at something off screen (as does Enzo and he´s dead) and there is a raven sitting on the coffin. Also, Caroline is comforting Stefan, which pretty much indicates that Damon is definitely one to possibly die.
Besides, the show always revolved around the Salvatore brothers, so it would only be fitting if one of them dies. He pined over Katherine for several decades, then fell in love with Elena, just to be parted from her again. It would be a very tragic ending to a kinda tragic love life.
Theory No. 3 Bonnie dies.
That would be one, if not the most underserved death in history, but knowing the writers, they would definitely throw a curveball like that. But if Bonnie dies, she possibly could live in her self-created world/hell where she could be happy with Enzo.
Since it was clear from the beginning that Elena only wakes up if Bonnie is dead, it could very well be that she´s the one dying, however, it is way too obvious. I doubt they would go for that.
Other Characters I am kinda of worried about:
Caroline. Alaric is confirmed to visit The Originals next season (presumably with his kids), which raises the question where the hell Caroline is.
Matt. I personally wouldn´t be too broken up about the death of Matty Blue Blue, but he is definitely at risk as well.
Other scenarios that might happen throughout the episode (most are pretty unlikely, though)
Katherine pretends to be Elena and Elena does not actually wake up. (would also explain Damon’s surprise at finding her - whoever that might be- awake
Elena is actually crying at her own funeral as a ghost and is the one that ends up dead
Other info and/or rumors about the finale
Alongside Elena, there are other characters said to return like: Jeremy Gilbert, John Gilbert, Jenna Sommers and Lexi Branson
There will be a flashback and flash-forward.
The final scene will be shot at the Salvatore House
No matter what happens, I am sure we'll cry a lot of tears. I know I will..
What are your predictions? If you want, leave them in the comments ;)

Vampire Diaries Universe: The 25 Best Characters, Ranked
Tumblr media
For the first time since 2009, we’re entering a fall season devoid of any new offerings from the Vampire Diaries universe. And like Stefan Salvatore without his daily diet of forest friends, we’re insatiable.
Like so many longtime TVD enthusiasts (those of us to whom the word “thesmatos” really means something!), we’ve spent much of quarantine revisiting the weird, wonderful universe — from Mystic Falls to New Orleans and back again. We’re suddenly spending a lot of time with characters we haven’t seen in years. And we’re having a lot of feelings about them.
In celebration of the franchise’s 11th anniversary, TVLine has assembled another totally non-controversial ranking, this time of the 25 best characters from the Vampire Diaries universe — a category that also includes familiar faces from The Originals and Legacies. (In Legacies‘ defense, the franchise’s latest offshoot hasn’t been around as long to endear itself to us, but that didn’t stop four Salvatore School students from making their way onto our list.)
In lieu of new content from the TVD universe this fall, TVLine is looking back at our 25 favorite characters from the entire franchise, including stand-out favorites from its two spinoffs.
SPOILER ALERT: This ranking discusses major plot points from all three shows. If you haven’t finished The Vampire Diaries (Season 1-8), The Originals (Season 1-5) or Legacies (Season 1-2), proceed at your own risk. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
25. VINCENT GRIFFITH
Thanks to the magic of body swapping, the Mikaelson siblings have inhabited multiple physical vessels throughout the years, but none have remained in the family’s orbit quite like this Southern gentleman. Powerful, thoughtful and downright Shakespearean in his delivery (Yusuf Gatewood, ladies and gentlemen!), Vincent always has the greater good in mind. And as we learned in The Originals’ series finale, he helped Freya and Keelan pass that good along to the next generation.
Tumblr media
24. LANDON KIRBY
Even though we’re still getting to know him, there’s already so much to like about this pure-hearted Mystic Falls townie. Not only is he the franchise’s first-ever phoenix, but he also looks like he could pass for Damon and Elena’s offspring — and that’s never a bad thing. We could tell he had a long future in this universe the moment he danced with Hope in The Originals’ final season. (So far, so good!)
23. JENNA SOMMERS
Like so many paved paradises, we didn’t fully appreciate what we had with Jenna until she was gone. Her death marked the end of Elena’s innocence — which is saying a lot, considering she was still mourning her own parents when The Vampire Diaries began. And if we’re being honest, Jenna was the ghost we were most excited to see again in the series finale. (For the record, Joseph Morgan has apologized on Klaus’ behalf for killing Jenna several times.)
22. TYLER LOCKWOOD
The First Son of Mystic Falls was kind of a jerk when we met him in The Vampire Diaries‘ first season. He was arrogant, aggressive and reckless — so it actually made perfect sense when he was revealed to be a werewolf. Fortunately, Michael Trevino’s character developed a little more nuance from that point on, especially via his Romeo and Juliet romance with Caroline. (After everything that’s happened since 2013, can you believe that they were once in a love triangle with Klaus?)
21. JEREMY GILBERT
Elena’s little brother (er, cousin?) went through a number of different, wonderful phases during his tenure in Mystic Falls. We loved him in The Vampire Diaries’ earlier seasons as the human embodiment of all things emo (he literally dated a ghost!), and we… um… appreciated his unexpected evolution into a shirt-ripping, wood-chopping vampire hunter.
20. CAMILLE ‘CAMI’ O’CONNELL
The Clarice Starling to Klaus’ Hannibal Lecter, this brave bartender was able to tap into the show’s darkest, most complicated character’s psyche in ways that no one named Mikaelson (or even Forbes) ever could. She helped him conquer a number of his demons in the few short years they spent together on The Originals, and like most people who play a significant role in Klaus’ life, she suffered the consequences. (Side note: Are we the only ones who really dug Cami as a vampire? Justice for that short-lived story arc.)
19. SHERIFF ELIZABETH FORBES
Of The Vampire Diaries’ many maternal figures, none put us through the emotional ringer quite like Caroline’s mother. We weren’t her biggest fans in the show’s early seasons, given her penchant for hunting the undead (including her own daughter), but hey, what was this show if not an endless series of redemption arcs? Also, if you don’t get a little choked up when Caroline felt her mom’s presence in the series finale, you don’t have a soul.
18. FREYA MIKAELSON
The long-lost fifth Mikaelson sibling was a little rough around the edges when we first encountered her on The Originals, but the poor woman was in the midst of escaping a centuries-long imprisonment, so we cut her a little slack. And we’re glad we did, because Freya has since become one of the strongest, most inspiring and all-around likable characters in the Vampire Diaries canon. #FreelinForever
17. MARCEL GERARD
While it’s easy to get swept up in Marcel’s charm and swagger (we were robbed of a second karaoke number, by the way!), it’s important to remember just how far back his time with the Mikaelson family goes. When you consider that Klaus literally freed Marcel from slavery and raised him to lead New Orleans as his right-hand vampire, it adds a whole other layer of tension to their passionate power struggle on The Originals. Though he’s treated like an unofficial Mikaelson sibling, Marcel often feels like more of a Mikaelson than Kol — and definitely more than Finn.
16. REBEKAH MIKAELSON
Arguably the funniest (and most glamorous) member of the Mikaelson family, the woman Damon once referred to as “Barbie Klaus” never fai to tell it exactly like it was, beginning with her thoughts on then-lovebirds Stefan and Elena. (“Honestly, I don’t get you two as a couple.”) And Bex only became more complex as the years went on, from her desperate desire for humanity to her undeniable love for Marcel. Just don’t call her insane — she prefers “spontaneous.”
Tumblr media
15. ALARIC SALTZMAN
In hindsight, Alaric’s journey from hot history teacher to hot headmaster of a supernatural school makes perfect sense. Still, it was impossible to predict back in The Vampire Diaries’ first season just how much of an impact the man formerly known as Warner Huntington III would have on this franchise. A drinking buddy to some, a father figure to others and a literal father to a lucky pair, Alaric has truly woven himself into the fabric of this universe like few others. (That said, we still wouldn’t recommend dating him if you value your life.)
14. SHERIFF MATT DONOVAN
Only one full-blooded human survived all eight seasons of The Vampire Diaries, and you’re looking at him. The pinnacle of mortal goodness, this blue-eyed patriot hasn’t always been on the same page as his vampire brethren, but that’s only because he didn’t want to see any more his friends and family get eaten. And we can sympathize with that!
Tumblr media
12-13. LIZZIE AND JOSIE SALTZMAN
Asking us to choose between Jo (by way of Caroline) and Alaric’s daughters is an impossible task, which is ironic, considering the Gemini twins are literally destined for a fight to the death on their 22nd birthday. Besides, these sisters have always felt like a package deal, from the moment we witnessed their birth on The Vampire Diaries to the day we reunited with them as teenagers on Legacies. (They also popped up in The Originals’ penultimate episode, putting them in the prestigious category of characters who have appeared in all three series.) Despite their inherent connection, Lizzie and Josie really have grown into two very different people, a journey we hope will continue for years (and shows) to come.
11. MALACHAI ‘KAI’ PARKER
The fact that this remorseless, pork rind-loving psychopath ranks so high on our list speaks volumes about actor Chris Wood, who brought a refreshingly sassy vibe to The Vampire Diaries’ sixth season. The guy was so likable, fans were even ‘shipping him with Bonnie… as if that poor girl hadn’t been through enough already! You also have to give Kai points for longevity — even after his head got knocked off, he managed to make two encore appearances on TVD (Season 8) and Legacies (Season 2).
Tumblr media
10. HOPE MIKAELSON
As we mentioned with Lizzie and Josie earlier, we feel like we’ve watched Hope grow up before our eyes… because we have. Given the epic circumstances surrounding her conception, birth and upbringing, an adult version of this character had a lot of hype to live up to, and Danielle Rose Russell has proven herself more than up to the challenge. Imbued with her parents’ best qualities, Hope’s power and passion make her both a formidable foe and an invaluable ally. Besides, Legacies showed us what the world would be like without Hope, and it was not a good place.
Tumblr media
9. HAYLEY MARSHALL
We can’t even think about this fierce, fearless mama wolf without shedding a single tear. Hayley’s story was basically one long tragedy, from her complicated marriage with Jackson to her tumultuous relationship with Elijah. And then there was her untimely demise in The Originals’ final season, which… actually, let’s not talk about that. From the moment she gave birth, Hayley’s heart belonged to Hope, and it was in her most extreme maternal moments that Hayley’s true strength was on display. That’s how we’ll remember her.
8. ELIJAH MIKAELSON
Suits? Pressed. Hair? Immaculate. Vocabulary? Thicc. With his smooth moves and cunning intellect, Klaus’ extremely respectful brother could do it all — well, except keep the people he loved from meeting horrific ends. (Seriously, this guy’s track record for dead lovers is right up there with Alaric’s.)
7. BONNIE BENNETT
Simply put, this is the witch you want in your corner when things go south. Endlessly powerful and selfless to a fault, Kat Graham’s character spent eight agonizing seasons sacrificing herself — often literally, hence her multiple deaths — in order to keep her friends and family safe. No amount of bloody noses or dead boyfriends could stop this badass from crushing her enemies.
Tumblr media
6. CAROLINE FORBES
Getting smothered to death was honestly the best thing that could have happened to Caroline, who evolved from a basic, boy-crazy cheerleader into a bad-ass vampire overnight. And that was just the first phase of her franchise-long evolution into the empowered, globe-trotting mother of two she is today. She’s also responsible for all of The Vampire Diaries’ memorable musical moments, from her sweet song for Matt to her devastating performance at Sheriff Forbes’ funeral. (Now if only she’d pay her old pals at Legacies a visit…)
Tumblr media
5. ELENA SALVATORE
She may not have Katherine’s chaotic flare, but Elena deserves credit for carrying much of The Vampire Diaries’ dramatic and romantic weight for six years. And for that pink hair she experimented with in Season 4. On top of that, Elena also rolled with the punches better than almost anyone. (You’re vampires? I’m a doppelgänger? Now I’m a vampire? Now I’m human again? Now I’m in a coma? Sure, let’s do this.)
Tumblr media
3-4. DAMON AND STEFAN SALVATORE
Two sides of the same brooding coin, these brothers were as proficient at breaking hearts as they were at breaking necks. And while their love triangle with Elena will remain the stuff of TV legend, their relationship as brothers was revealed to be the real heart of The Vampire Diaries in its final two seasons. Honestly, it’s too hard to choose between them, so we’re not going to.
2. KATHERINE PIERCE
Come on, when were you not excited to see this leather-clad lunatic on your screen? Deliciously twisted and infinitely more interesting than her human doppelgänger, Katherine was behind many of The Vampire Diaries’ most jaw-dropping twists, from her iconic encounter with John(’s bloody fingers) to her long-awaited return in the series finale. Honestly, putting Katherine on hell’s throne in Season 8 was merely a formality — she was always a queen.
Tumblr media
1. KLAUS MIKAELSON
The man, the myth, the legend. To think that the monster who slaughtered poor, defenseless Aunt Jenna on The Vampire Diaries is the same person who gave it all up to save his daughter on The Originals… well, there isn’t a clap slow enough to commend that kind of growth. (Again, Joseph Morgan is very sorry about the whole Jenna thing!) By the time Klaus evaporated on the streets of New Orleans, it felt like we had explored every conceivable nook and cranny of his existence, from his traumatic childhood to his fatal romances — and we relished every second of it.

Personal thoughts on… 2020 releases (Part I)
Note: As the title says, these are just personal opinions on Choices books and chapters. Of course, you may agree or disagree with them, I only use this platform to express my thoughts on what I read every week.
So, I did this in 2019 and I had a blast doing it (you can see Part I, Part II, Part III and the Seasonal Books reviews), so I thought about repeating the experience because… why not? Of course, I had planned to post this during the holidays but my job barely let me some free time to eat and sleep. Better later than never, I guess.
In 2019, we read over 30 books and it was the busiest year for Pixelberry in terms of releases so far. During 2020, things changed A LOT. We didn’t have as many releases and the stories seemed to have a new focus, especially the romance ones. We said “goodbye” to the wedding books and welcomed some 30 diamond scenes that were at a whole new level. We also had many hiatuses and some books were so long that it seemed like we spent the whole year reading them.
This will be a three-part post and I will include current releases and books that were released during 2019 but were finished in 2020. The list is organized in alphabetical order, and it doesn’t include the VIP Books (as I’ll talk about them in a fourth post). The only books I will be skipping will be Desire & Decorum: First Winter and Bloodbound: Dark Solstice, as they’re seasonal books that I fully covered in the 2019 review.
America's Most Eligible: Wedding Edition (September 18, 2019 - January 22, 2020):  As a person who really enjoyed the first AME book, I already thought it was unnecessary to have a second book. I mean… reality shows are repetitive, so why would we have two books that were exactly the same? Little did I know this series was so popular that we ended up having a third book with a wedding after dating our LI for like two months (because we did need another one last wedding book, right?). There were too many things that didn’t make sense to me. My MC never had a good relationship with Slater, so having him as part of my wedding party was annoying, I would have preferred to have Teagan on my side. Also, despite the fact that we finally got to know Ivy’s background and why she was so evil throughout the series, competing against her (and Vince) all over again was exhausting… I would have definitely preferred a normal wedding diary show or something like that. And last but not least, the fact that Jen was working on the show while being a competitor was so… I don’t think this is actually possible in a real TV show. But the award to the weirdest moment goes to what happened to those people who left their LI’s at the altar and married Bianca or Slater instead. Yeah, because after that super heartbreaking moment, Jen takes the MC, Adam, Derek and Mackenzie to the producer's room to watch some “never seen before” footage about their friendship throughout the series…. because of course… there is nothing weird about seeing your ex there, right after dumping them in the middle of the wedding. This series was good enough to deserve a way more decent ending. Baby Bump, Book 1 (December 9, 2019 - March 16, 2020): My overall impression about this book is “meh”. Even though a lot of people complained about how the pregnancy was shown, I think the writers did a pretty decent job. The experience is different for every woman, so I think that criticizing the focus the writers decided to give to our MC’s experience is just pointless and saying “it’s not realistic” is a little unfair. The same thing applies to the baby. A lot of people complained saying that the baby was “too big”. Guess what guys… that isn’t the actual baby, that’s just the cover of the book… if you buy the “baby basket”, you’ll get the right baby size throughout the story. As a personal opinion, I think the story has some good things (I really like the fact that it shows how hard is for pregnant women to get and to keep a job, even though the fact that the MC hid her pregnancy is very unprofessional, to say the least) but there are some things that make me feel uncomfortable. First of all… our gang. I like the characters as individuals, but when I look at them as a gang, the only thing that Luisa, Myles and Clint have in common is the MC… I don’t know what they’d talk about if they were in a room without her. There is also this very personal POV on dating Myles… I mean… maybe it’s just me, but it is kind of uncomfortable to see Myles dating a pregnant woman who actually got pregnant after a one night stand with the other guy in our gang (or with the only guy in the gang, if your Myles is a female). Baby Bump, Book 2 (November 20, 2020 - present): Well, if you collected every single piece of the blanket in Baby Bump Book 1, you already had little glimpses about this book. Our very pregnant woman not only discovered that she’s having twins, but she also has some new duties at the city hall. And even though there are some things about this book that still don’t convince me, I can see the efforts to make some improvements in the story. The fact that the plot is not only focused on the MC and her pregnancy, but also on Clint’s family issues, Myles’ reelection and the park not only are introducing us to new characters, but they’re also giving us plenty of material to make the story more dynamic and not only focused on one topic. I also like how the writers have been managing Cassandra’s arc of redemption. Despite her being the antagonist in the first book, you can tell she’s grown a lot as a character, to the point that she is willing to help our MC not because of her reputation, but because she genuinely seems to care. I don’t know if I expect a big plot twist coming in the next few chapters (and if it does, I guess it will be related to the MC’s health and the babies delivered earlier than expected) but even if it doesn’t, I can already tell this book is better than the first one. Blades Of Light And Shadow, Book 1 (January 29, 2020 - June 3, 2020): There is no doubt (at least not for me) that this was the best new release of 2020. We had been waiting for a new adventure book for a really long time, and PB delivered. Not only we had this super wide range of MCs to choose from, we had a book where our choices actually mattered. Because yes, you can buy every single diamond scene in this story and still, if you don’t make the right choices at the right moments, you won’t get all the skills at the end of it. And that’s probably what seduces me the most about this book. The characters in our gang are also very well written. Each one of them has a very different personality, they all have these very different backgrounds and burdens, but they still complement each other perfectly when it comes to work as a team. Now if I have to be completely honest about the plot, it took me a while to get into it, but I want to think it’s because I’m not very familiar with this type of stories, because it’s very clear that there aren’t any writing problems in it. However, if I have to criticize one thing, it has to be some people’s reaction: because yes, it seems like some people didn’t get the memo that this wasn’t a romance book and I must admit it disappointed me a little to see that most of the discussions were focused in the romance part instead of talking about the adventure itself. Bloodbound, Book 3 (November 9, 2019 - March 28, 2020): Last year, I already mentioned how happy I was with this book, especially because most of the times, the third book in a series is not as popular as the previous ones. We sometimes have that problem of writers dragging plots because they have nothing new to add and us, the readers, struggling to finish the story (because of course, after reading 2 books, no one gives up on reading the third one). Well, I still think this book is nothing but impressive. As a person who’s not into vampires at all, I can safely say this is the book that I enjoyed the most in the series. Even though I didn’t feel huge changes in our LIs, I loved the evolution of our MC when compared to the first book (her character development itself deserves a whole post) and even though there were some things that seemed predictable, there were some others that were completely unexpected. If I had to change something, I’d say we deserved two endings, the one that we had and a darker one, I think PB truly missed an opportunity there. But overall, I think the story came full circle. This is definitely one of my favorite releases in 2020. Distant Shores (April 3, 2020 - July 17, 2020): This book gives me all the “Nighbound” vibes. That is, it is a good story, it is well written, the plot is attractive and overall it was well received by the fandom; however, that’s not enough for it to get a second book (or in PB’s words, “it’s not as popular and profitable as we think”). I personally enjoyed the story, but I didn’t fall in love with it. My biggest complaint is that I kept constantly waiting for some HUGE plot twist, I did need that “I didn’t see that coming” moment to blow our minds… but that never happened and I ended up feeling that PB wasted a story that could have shown us one adventure after another and turned it into something “plain”. Also, even though we had a badass MC, three awesome LIs and an amazing crew, by the time I pressed the “End book” button, I felt I had more questions than answers… and I absolutely hate it when that happens. We never got a chance to know anything about Robert’s story, his background and how he managed to survive and go back and forth between the past and the present. Or we never knew what made him and our MC so special and why the compass helped them to time travel. I can definitely see the potential for a second (and even a third) book, it’s sad to know it won’t be happening.

Ask meme! 2, 16, and 21!
aaa thank you for the questions from these writers asks!! <3 <3
2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
ahhh - this is definitely the werewolf thing I was talking about in one of my previous answers.
I just want to write that the werewolf is in love but the person they’re in love with doesn’t know they’re a werewolf, and then BAM we get the REVEAL.
And then I get the aftermath of that too - which will be some delicious angst and a cute moment petting animal ears because don’t tell me anyone would be able to resist cute animal ears okay. And I have plans for even more angst and just, I really can’t wait to get into the meat of that story. All this set up and I’m neeeaarrlllyyy there.
But also, I kind of want to write that time travelling thing I wrote about before too. Like, I’m really really considering it now even though I feel like that would be an intensely big project to commit to.... I’d like to write time travel shenanigans.
16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)
Well anyone who is still following me will know I did a fandom 360 and went from My Hero Academia, with its shonen anime highschool superhero hijinks, to IT, with its 80s aesthetic of a group of misfit kids going to beat up a child eating space clown. (and then their return 27 years later, still absolute disasters, going to bully the same clown.)
I couldn’t have jumped from two fandoms more different from each other.
And it’s a weird story how I got there, but it happened and here I am I guess
The biggest problem, that probably nobody even knows is a thing unless you’ve jumped from an anime like MHA to a ‘real’ setting of a live action fandom, is that the way you have to describe actions and write dialogue has to change or it just doesn’t read right.
In anime they often say each others names a lot. Don’t know why - must be a Japanese thing. But if you pay attention, especially in the sub, don’t know if they change it for the dub, they’ll say the name of the person they’re talking to a lot. Seriously - google it ! It’s just, a thing in anime.
But in American movies and such, that doesn’t happen. So characters constantly repeating names becomes a habit in my head while writing dialogue and trying to break myself out of that habit is actually harder than you’d think. I have to comb back through and delete out any times that I’ve repeated a name for no reason other than if this was anime they’d have said it there.
ugh
Also the movements and expressions in anime are very exaggerated - because it’s animated, and then when you move to a ‘real’ kind of fandom you realise that these ways of describing how a character moves or expresses is too cartoonish for ‘real life’.
Basically writing fanfiction for an over the top shonen anime for three years broke the way I write in general. Going back to a real setting was a painful adjustment that I feel like I’m still in the progress of getting it right a whole year after switching fandoms. rip
also, I tried writing in present tense for the first time ever last year and that was fun! Difficult, because I’m so used to writing in the past tense, but fun.
I like to challenge myself sometimes!
I’ve done really conversational kind of narrative voices, really impersonal ones, being really flowery, being really simple, I just like to mix it up every so often.
21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
Beep Beep Beep would make such a great cheesy Hallmark Movie - a 90 minute made-for-tv load of fluff. Tropes everywhere! Romantic leads that you know are going to get together as soon as they meet! The overdramatic angst! The way it all comes together at the end! The sort of movie my mum would watch but I’d scoff at and be like ‘soooo predictable’. Love it. someone tell a studio who likes to make these things that I have a script for them
My current wip [barks] would be such a great teen TV show - like Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf. I injected those kinds of shows into my veins when I was a teenager. Supernatural romance? SIGN ME UP. Except this one would finally be set where the characters are all college ages, so you can actually get twenty-something actors to play twenty-something characters. It always cracks me up when they got actors in their twenties to play highschool kids.
There’d be an edgy theme song, and loads of cool practical makeup and effects, because that’s the stuff that holds up over the years, not the hokey cgi. Just use cgi to enhance practical effects pls. Or you know, I guess, when you can’t have people actually turning into wolves practically, then you gotta throw out the cgi.
but yeah, all the relationship melodrama and cool supernatural creatures would be so cool in a tv show.
oh! and how cool would it be to see one of my oneshots as a webcomic though?? (only cool to you, I hear yelled at me from the back of the audience)
But okay, hand on heart, I am deadly 100% serious when I say that I have any and all fanart I have ever received from any of my stories saved in a folder. I open that folder sometimes and I think, somebody spent time making this because they were inspired by words that came out of my head. And it really makes me emotional. I mean, I’ve also commissioned some works based on my fics and those also mean the world to me - because the work, even paid work, is is still work and time and effort. Like, yes, there was money involved, but the artist still MADE this. They used their knowledge of their craft. It’s beautiful.
But yeah, fanart just hits me in this special place and seeing my ideas as a picture - a thing I can actually look at!!! - is the strangest coolest thing in the entire world.

Question Game - AKA Oversharing Hour
I was tagged by @the-angry-pixie! And I’m a chronic oversharer, so this was fun. I’ll put most of it under a read more line because there’s a LOT.
1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen?
Black. Dunno why.
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city?
City city city city city city city city. I’m already going fucking batshit as it is, trapped in suburbia. I want to be able to actually do things, anything. Anything other than just being around the house and / or work. (And I felt like this before the pandemic started.) If you live in the city you can walk out your door and be somewhere else within like 5 minutes. A city park, a cafe, a train/subway, a local attraction, a museum, an artist’s booth, an outdoor market, etc. etc.
Living in suburbia is like, well, to go literally anywhere you have to get into your car first and drive like 10 minutes minimum to get out of the neighborhood, and then if you want to go anywhere that’s not the grocery store you have to drive 20 minutes to get to another area of town, and then once you get there that’s the only place you can be without getting into your car again and getting a nice shot of anxiety from having to drive in traffic and have aggressive drivers roar up on your ass because you’re going 5mph above the speed limit and they want to be going 15mph above, and god help you if you have to merge, and oh by the way this is your only option to get around because public transit doesn’t really exist in any useful way in Big Suburbia, and nothing in within walking distance of your house except like 2 playgrounds and maybe one (1) gas station. (I hate it here lmao)
If I was trapped in the country I’d probably be chill with it for about a week, and enjoy the break, and the on day 8 I’d snap and go on a murdering spree out of stir-craziness.
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be?
I want to learn German and eventually be fluent in it. But since I’ve already started trying to learn and I don’t know if that counts, I’ll say cinematography. As in the actual working of the camera and lighting and all that. I can dream up some pretty striking images but actually getting the camera to do the settings needed to capture them is another story entirely.
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar?
Nope. I drink coffee and tea both, and I don’t put any kind of sweetener in either of them. I used to put a shitton of sugar in my coffee and honey in my tea, and then I had some mild eating disorder struggles in college and I never got back in the habit of putting stuff in my hot drinks after that. It just tastes wrong now, after being used to plain black coffee.
5. What was your favourite book as a child?
Either the Harry Potter series or The Hobbit. My grandma would take care of me a lot when I was really little because my parents both worked full time to support us, and every single time I was at her house she’d sit us down at the dining room table and read something to me. Not Junie B. Jones or anything, either, but real, big, thick books. I loved the shit out of Harry Potter and The Hobbit; I would request them repeatedly. We pretty much went back and forth; we’d read Harry Potter, and then The Hobbit, and then when a new Harry Potter book came out we’d read that, and then The Hobbit again, and so on and so forth.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers?
Showers. I love baths, they’re magical, but ain’t nobody got time for that unless it’s a special occasion. I got too much shit to do to spend an hour lying in the bathtub.
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be?
Vampire. Purely on the basis that if I was immortal maybe I’d finally have time to get my to-do list done and accomplish things. I’d miss the sunlight though.
8. Paper or electronic books?
Paper. Here’s the thing, I really want to enjoy ebooks, but they just don’t hold my attention at all. Maybe I’m too conditioned by the internet to have a short attention span when I’m looking at a screen, idk.
9. What is your favourite item of clothing?
I have a dark gray hoodie from the Seattle Aquarium from when I went on a road trip across America with my BFF a few years ago. It’s still my absolute favorite thing. I also enjoy my hiking boots a lot. (I wear them all the time, really they should just be called “everyday boots” haha)
10. Do you like your name or would you like to change it?
I like my name and I would also like to start going by something different. Probably just because I’m a restless soul and I feel the best (and least trapped) when I’m on the move or when things are changing. The second I get somewhere I want to be somewhere else. That’s just how I am. Gwen is a cool name (I’ve personally met maybe 3 people in my whole life with the same name, face-to-face), but there’s a lot attached to that nickname that I don’t necessarily want to carry with me when I eventually escape my hometown and start down a new path.
11. Who is a mentor to you?
A friend and former professor whom I usually refer to online as Producer Man. He’s a producer (as you may have guessed) who kind of took me under his wing after I was in one of his film classes in college. We work together on film projects now and he’s teaching me bit-by-bit (usually by way of long, rambling, tangential stories / lectures) about the industry. He’s a really good guy. Like, he for sure has a case of Old White Guy sometimes, but his heart is absolutely in the right place. “He’s a little confused, but he’s got the spirit.” He’s always leaving $10 tips at coffee places and working himself to the bone to get his students connected to jobs and internships that will help them with their careers.
12. Would you like to be famous and if so, what for?
Yes, my stories. Actually, “famous” is not the right word. It’s just that fame is so tightly associated with success in our society. I want to be successful. Whether I’m widely known or not is pretty inconsequential to me. I want to make stories and I want them to have an impact. Books, film, etc. It’s about as simple as that.
13. Are you a restless sleeper?
Oh yeah. I have trouble  sleeping as much as I should because I usually kind of jerk awake in the morning with this vague feeling that I forgot something or that I’m late for something. Also I stay up later than I should because I’m a night owl, and yet I like being up early because early mornings are great. And usually if I dream at all it’s something kind of stressful, like I dream that I forgot something important or did something wrong. I’m a Stressed Bean.
14. Do you consider yourself a romantic person?
I think so, yeah. I’m pretty obsessed with the idea of romance (I mean look at my OTPs), but heteronormativity got me fucked up enough that I’m bad at actually navigating real romantic feelings or relationships because society never prepared me for The Gay.
15. Which element best represents you?
Fire, probably.
16. Who do you want to be closer to?
My mom. We fight a lot and there tends to be a lot of tension between us. It’s a long complicated story. It boils down to, she really hurt me when I came out as not-straight at 15 and she lost all of my trust and even though she’s working on being less homophobic we’re still kind of trying to repair that divide seven years later.
17. Do you miss someone at the moment?
Dude, I miss everyone. I’m an introvert and I’d love to be at a big party right now. I miss socialization. (As does everyone.)
18. Tell us about an early childhood memory.
The first time I experienced deja vu, I was about eehhh 6? And I legitimately believed, for several years of my life, that I had future-predicting abilities. Like, supernatural-level future-predicting abilities. Because I didn’t really know what deja vu was, so I thought, every time it happened, that I had already ~seen~ that moment in my dreams or something. 🤣
19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten?
Hm. (My immature ass brain yells “DICK.” No, brain. Those were dark heteronormative times. Also, grow up.)
Probably some of the sushi in Seattle. I actually love sushi, it’s just that when it has full-on legs and eyeballs I start getting a little squeamish. I like the rolls and the kind where there’s some fish meat laid out on a nice little bed of rice, that’s delicious. But when they brought out the whole shrimp with legs still attached, I was like “How in the (redacted) am I going to chew / swallow that.”
20. What are you most thankful for?
That I happened to be living with family when this pandemic hit. I was supposed to move out (and across the country, actually) as of... like 4 days ago, as it happens. That was the plan. Plane ticket was gonna be booked for 7/15/20. Obviously, things didn’t quite work out that way, because of the pandemic and a few other reasons. But I can’t imagine if I had been in an apartment living with roommates, or in an apartment on my own struggling to get by, when this happened. A lot of people couldn’t pay rent and lost their homes. I was very, very lucky to be where I was, when I was, and very lucky that I have family who let me stay in their house pretty much indefinitely while this clusterfuck of a year happens.
21. Do you like spicy food?
Yes! I looooove spicy thai food especially. I miss the massaman curry from a local Thai place so much 😭
22. Have you ever met someone famous?
Um. Maybe? I met Veronica Roth once at an author talk in the library where I work, although it was before I worked there. And I met some guy from New Zealand who’s famous for his sword fighting skills because my dad does sword fighting stuff. Don’t remember his name though.
23. Do you keep a diary or journal?
Yep. I have to write down everything or I forget. (I often say I have the memory of a goldfish.) Also, I have this compulsion to record and preserve my experiences in life, because I feel like our time on Earth is so fleeting and if I don’t write down what’s important to me, I’ll forget it and lose it.
24. Do you prefer to use a pen or a pencil?
Pen. Pencil gets smudged.
25. What is your star sign?
Scorpio, which is ironic because they’re supposed to be ~hyper sexual~ I guess, and I’m like gray-ace or something in that zone.
26. Do you like your cereal soggy or crunchy?
Crunchy. Who eats soggy cereal? Are you okay? Do you need help? This is an intervention.
27. What would you want your legacy to be?
My stories. Life and sentience, as we experience it, is made up of just that: experience. And I read somewhere that, on some level, the human brain doesn’t differentiate that much between real life experiences and fictional experiences. I think that’s true. If you read or watch or hear the right story, it can really touch you and change the way you see life, or even change the way you live life. Stories have an incredible amount of power, both in individual people’s lives and in larger society. A huge amount of power. I want to be able to give people experiences that will Enrich Their Lives (do I sound like a lifestyle coach yet? 🤦🏼‍♀️), but also stories that actively do good in society. Positive representation, body positivity/neutrality, diversity, healthy relationships (Hollywood has a real problem with that). Hope. It’s the best thing I can think to give society, and storytelling is what I love to do.
28. Do you like reading, what was the last book you read?
I love reading. I wish I did it more. Part of my problem is that I get caught up in the hectic Rat Race of modern society and I never feel like I have time to sit down with a book for hours. Another problem of mine is that I start too many things at once, meaning I currently have like 5-10 (I lost count) books that I started reading, and I want to finish all of them, which means no progress ever gets done on any of them.
I last finished The Goldfinch, and I am currently working on The Secret History, Good Omens, Dune, a book my dad wrote, Directing Actors, Shot by Shot, The Way of Kings and I forget what else.
29. How do you show someone you love them?
Physical affection, acts of service, words of affirmation, quality time, and gifts, in that order. If I’m close to someone, whether romantically or not, I want all the affection. And I’m kind of dying in quarantine.
30. Do you like ice in your drinks?
Depends. I usually don’t put any in, because it’s just gonna water down the drink and get in the way of drinking it (you know when the ice attacks your face?), but I don’t really mind ice in my drinks.
31. What are you afraid of?
Helplessness. I Have Control Issues. ✌️ Also stagnation.
32. What is your favourite scent?
Amber. Or any scent that’s kind of autumn-y. You know what I mean. Some other examples include dryer sheets, wood smoke, cigarette smoke (my big sister used to smoke a long long time ago, and although I never saw her do it, I still associate the scent with her), pine resin, rain, that Mahogany Woods scent from Bath and Bodyworks.
33. Do you address older people by their name or surname?
If they introduce themselves as Pam I call them Pam. If they introduce themselves as Mr. Brown I call them Mr. Brown.
34. If money was not a factor, how would you live your life?
If “money is not a factor” means I have an infinite amount of money to spend as I wish, then: buy land, build film studio complex on land, found company, hire fellow creatives, make movies.
If “money is not a factor” just means that I don’t have to work 40 hours a week to afford rent, then: move to Chicago, rent a nice studio apartment, write stories, maybe work 15 hours a week at a used bookstore or coffee shop to get me out of the house and socialize. Go to museums, go to the park, walk along Lake Michigan, go to gay bars, ride the train, brave the Illinois winters, own a cat, paint, play guitar. Build my actual career on writing / storytelling. Probably also do some filmmaking.
Alternatively: buy an RV (not like an American Trailer Park shitty RV, I’m talking the NOICE ones), buy good film equipment, be a freelancer, live in RV driving around to wherever the next filming location is. Life is a road trip and I’m doing what I love. Writing, storytelling, filmmaking. My home would travel with me. Writing in cafes; roadside attractions; early mornings on the road with coffee in the cup holder as the sun comes up; being able to go anywhere to film; always experiencing something new.
35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean?
I’ve lived in a landlocked state my whole life, so I guess swimming pools. And, listen, I CANNOT get water in my mouth at the beach without wondering exactly how many kids have peed (or worse) in that water. (I know that’s a thing with pools too, but pools get cleaned.)
36. What would you do if you found £50 on the ground?
Wonder what some poor European is doing in America right now. But if it was $50, I’d probably yell “DID ANYONE DROP THIS?” and then take it if no one speaks up.
37. Have you ever seen a shooting star?
A few times, yeah.
38. What is the one thing you would want to teach your children?
Grades are not the end-all-be-all. Skip some homework assignments to spend time with friends. Skip class sometimes. I’m serious. If you make school your top priority, even over your own personal life, you will come away with good grades and a lot of regret and missed opportunities. Learning is HELLA important, and very very little of it happens inside a school building. Get a 15 hour weekend or after-school job in high school, befriend your coworkers, and have fun with it. Use your paychecks however you want. Join a school club - one that you’re actually interested in. Do stupid shit. Light your textbooks on fire after graduation or go to the 24 hour Wendy’s at 2am with your friends or kiss that person you met at summer camp or sleep on the porch because it’s too hot to sleep inside. Be smart and safe, but follow your whims. If you let yourself fall into routine, apathy will poison you.
39. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it?
I already have a couple small ones, but the one I want next is a four-leaf clover. Don’t know where. Maybe my right inner wrist or maybe an ankle. Or like behind my ear. Luck has saved me so many times. (See above, with how I happened to be living with family when COVID hit.)
40. What can you hear now?
Swamp cooler downstairs, the clock ticking in my office, cars outside, people moving around the house. I’m surprised the neighbor kids aren’t shrieking their absolute heads off as per the usual.
41. Where do you feel the safest?
When I’m alone and unobserved.
42. What is the one thing you want to overcome/conquer?
TMI warning, but I absolutely despise public bathrooms. How am I expected to pee when there’s somebody sitting like three (3) feet away, with only a partial wall between us, hearing everything that’s going on? My fight or flight response simply will not allow it. It’s too awkward and therefore Not Safe. Either that public restroom has to be empty except for me, or it has to be so loud and bustling that ain’t nobody hearing anything. Anything in-between and I’m in hell.
43. If you could travel back to any era, what would it be?
The ‘80s. Let’s be honest, even that far back makes my life (as a woman, and as a gay person) hella difficult. But, consider this: it’s the ‘80s. Furthermore, consider this: a part-time job might have actually supported me and paid rent back then 😱 Holy fucking shit. Sign me up. I just wouldn’t want to go any further than than like 1980, because again: lesbian. Being a woman in the past = even harder than it is today, being gay in the past = even harder than it is today, being a gay woman in the past = oh no.
44. What is your most used emoji?
In order of descending frequency:
😂🙄😊😁🤦🏼‍♀️👀😬🌈🤷🏼‍♀️😙
45. Describe yourself using one word.
Creative
46. What do you regret the most?
Wasting my entire teenage experience. (See #38.) I did quite literally nothing with my life except homework for like 18 years. If I had taken even a tenth as much time for myself as I did for school, I would be so much farther along as a person today.
47. Last movie you saw?
In the theaters? ........ uh. Shit, I don’t actually remember. It’s been like 5 months. (As it has for everyone.) But the last movie I watched was Lights Out, because I’ve been watching the director’s youtube channel. You could tell it was low-budget and that the director was still kind of finding his stride, but it had a lot of heart behind it and the creators clearly gave a fuck, which made it enjoyable. I am firmly in the camp of “not everything has to be a Magnum Opus or have a multi-billion dollar budget to be a good movie.” If I engaged with it and got some sort of emotional experience out of it, and if it had a good message, I consider it a good movie.
48. Last tv show you watched?
I don’t usually watch a whole lot of TV shows (who has the time?) but I think the last thing I watched was either The Witcher or that new Unsolved Mysteries miniseries on Netflix. Oh and I was watching Dead to Me because I just love Linda Cardellini’s face and I want to wrap Judy up in a blanket and cuddle the shit out of her and protect her from all things 🥺 My precious beautiful unstable sweet murder baby.
49. Invent a word and it’s meaning.
Apapanic. It’s where you’re so stressed about things that half of your brain is panicking but the other half is so overwhelmed that it circled all the way back around to being calm to the point of apathy, so you just kind of sit there like

The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen: “If I’m Going To Be Famous, I Want To Be Famous For The Music That I Make”
Taylor Momsen almost gave up following the deaths of her heroes, but now The Pretty Reckless are back with a new purpose
On the evening of May 17, 2017, Taylor Momsen did her job as usual. Appearing onstage at the Fox Theatre, in Detroit, the then 23-year-old singer with The Pretty Reckless sang nine songs to an audience of more than 5,000 people as special guests to the night’s headliners, Soundgarden. The following morning she woke to the news that Chris Cornell, the singer with the Seattle group, had been found dead in the bathroom of his hotel room at the MGM Grand in the Motor City. He was later ruled to have died by suicide.
“To get the Soundgarden tour was such an exciting moment that we were all living,” Taylor says. “It was such an accomplishment for us to be able to watch them every night, and to be on that tour was so thrilling. It was the highest of highs – we couldn’t get happier and we couldn’t get higher.”
It’s difficult to overstate the extent to which the Seattleites impacted on the life of Taylor Momsen. To her ear, only The Beatles have set higher standards. Speaking from her home on an island off the coast of Maine, the thoughtful and chatty singer declines to divulge her encounters with Soundgarden on a tour that endured for 13 dates. But suffice it to say, its singer’s death hit her hard.
“The right word is to say that I plummeted,” she says. “It crushed me. We cancelled all the touring. I wasn’t in a place to be public because it really devastated me, like I think it did to a lot of people. Everyone he touched was just crushed. I cancelled everything and said, ‘I can’t do this right now, I need time. I can’t go out every night and entertain an audience and pretend I’m super happy and okay.’ I wasn’t okay. So I stopped. We quit tour and went home to try and process what had happened.”
When The Pretty Reckless formed, in 2009, it was a love of Soundgarden that brought together its principal players. Founded by Taylor, guitarist Ben Phillips, and producer Kato Khandwala – the trio that wrote the songs on the group’s debut album, Light Me Up, from 2010 – LPs such as Badmotorfinger and Superunknown made these three near-perfect strangers feel as if they were the best of friends.
So delighted was Kato of The Pretty Reckless’ berth on a tour with Soundgarden that he flew to every one of its spring dates. Less than a year later, on April 25, 2018, Taylor was sitting on her couch in Maine when she received a call informing her that her 47-year-old friend and producer had been killed in a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles. Today the singer describes receiving the news as being like “a nail in my coffin.”
She says that “[it] took me into what I can only describe as an extraordinarily dark downward spiral. I was in a hole that I didn’t know how to get out of, or if I was going to get out of it; what’s more, I had no idea where to even start trying. It was a scary time because I didn’t care any more. I’d given up on everything. I thought, ‘What am I going to do? My musical partner is dead. My musical idol is dead. I don’t care, what’s the point of any of this?’ So I gave up.”
Only, she didn’t. “It took time,” she says, “and it sounds clichéd, but it was music that was the thing that brought me back to life. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t function, I couldn’t leave my house, I couldn’t talk to anyone – I was a mess. And so the only thing that I could turn to was music and that eventually led to me just writing how I was feeling. It was like going back to childhood, really, and writing another diary that was my best friend, the only person I could talk to. And it turned into this record, which essentially I consider to be a rebirth.”
The record to which Taylor refers is the newly finished, fourth album from The Pretty Reckless, Death By Rock And Roll, which had been due for imminent release until the world held its breath in the face of you-know-what. In lieu of an entire LP, fans can at least take comfort in the unveiling of the band’s first single for three years. Released today, the album’s impressive title-track features as its intro the sound of the footsteps of Kato Khandwala.
“We spent over a year recording the album,” says Taylor. “And it’s all in there. There was no hiding from it. It took everything we had to make this record. In fact, it felt like we were making the first album again. That’s the thing we had with Light Me Up, we threw everything we had at that album, too. And we did that again this time.
“It very much feels like a rebirth,” she says.
Taylor Momsen is used to making music in trying circumstances. When The Pretty Reckless gathered themselves to record Light Me Up – which celebrates its 10th birthday this summer – the then-15-year-old singer was better known for playing the role of Jenny Humphrey in the television series Gossip Girl. By day she would film her scenes in New York City, and then by night retreat to the House Of Loud studio in Elmwood Park and Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey, to record songs during the vampire shift. If she caught three hours’ sleep as the sun bid good morning to the Garden State, she was lucky.
The album hit at the first time of asking, but the singer faced all the predictable problems of a woman in early 21st century rock. She dodged the sour intentions of men working in an industry in the days before the #MeToo movement – “I think like any woman, yes, there were uncomfortable and inappropriate moments,” she says – and ignored the sharks on social media by turning away from her phone with the attitude that “it’s not real – it’s not like someone is actually right in front of you, screaming in your face”. Similarly short shrift was given to those who believed that she was a MAW – ‘Model, Actress, Whatever’ – who had a new musical plaything but nothing to say.
“I felt bad at the beginning that there was no clean slate so people already had a perception of me,” she remembers. “That was the thing that I had to overcome, and in the beginning it was frustrating at times. But the way I overcame it was by not telling [people] over and over again that I was real and that this is who I am. They don’t hear that, they just hear you preaching. Instead, I just did it.”
She came to England and gazed in wonder at the landmarks of rock’n’roll heritage. It felt “like I was suddenly part of the history that I’d been reading about”. She snapped a photograph of the Battersea Power Station, over which Pink Floyd flew a giant inflatable pig for the cover of their Animals album. She saw the crossing outside a famous recording studio in Northwest London, across which The Beatles strode for the cover of their Abbey Road LP. And outside the Notting Hill Arts Centre, on May 12, 2010 she witnessed a crowd queuing tight around the block to see The Pretty Reckless make their debut in the capital.
“That was such an incredible feeling as an artist,” she says, “to see that I’d really connected with people.”
But more than anything, Taylor Momsen grafted. Imbued with a work ethic that saw her begin modelling at two years of age – “That taught me how much work and sacrifice it takes to pursue a career in any of the arts,” she says – she took The Pretty Reckless on the road for months on end without once looking back. Were it not for the small matter of a planetary pandemic, this summer she would be sharing stages with both Guns N’ Roses and Pearl Jam.
“I am an entire workaholic,” she says. “But it’s all music so it doesn’t feel like work. Before I spoke to you I was playing my guitar, and I’ll go back to playing it as soon as we’re finished. That’s the lucky thing about this job – I would be doing it anyway. The line that separates work for pleasure is kind of gone. It’s non-existent.”
Which is just as well. Through no small measure of talent, and a double scoop of application, over the course of three hit albums The Pretty Reckless have managed the enviable feat of prospering in an age of declining music sales. Better yet, this success has been earned with a measure of pizzazz and good old-fashioned Star Quality in the shape of Taylor Momsen. When the planet finally decides to take its finger off the pause button, she’ll be right there waiting and ready, with a smile that says: ‘Nice planet, I’ll take it.’
“If I’m going to be famous, I want to be famous for the music that I make,” she says. “I want be famous for something that I’ve worked really hard to create. I don’t want to be famous for the sake of being famous. I want the songs to be more famous than me. I want people to recognise the song without necessarily knowing that it’s even sung by me. My goal is not to be famous as myself, but to have the songs live on through time.”

THE TWILIGHT SAGA- a film review
A saga that both enthralled me as a thirteen year old and left me with several questions as an adult.
Isolation clearly sent me insane because I thought picking up the Twilight books would be a productive thing to do with my seemingly endless free time. 2008 me was obsessed, posters of the cast lined my walls, and the Edward vs Jacob debate was fierce. It was a series that taught me much - like never loaning beloved books to “friends” because you may or may not get them back in the same condition. It was a series that introduced me to Fanfic, was instrumental in my love affair with romance novels, and even inspired me to write.
Though the series gets as much hate as it does love, I think we can all agree that the series has left a lasting legacy. The movies gave us absolute fire soundtracks, young adult movies were suddenly everywhere, and for better or worse 50 Shades was, ironically, spawned.
I am not ashamed to say I was a massive Twi-Hard and re-reading the books really made me see why. We all know the story; the lion fell in love with the lamb etc. As far as plot goes, it’s very straight forward, predictable, and more than a little bit of a rip off of the original vampire diaries novels. As someone who was obsessed with both series, let me tell you the character similarities between the characters right down to the “vegetarianism” are just a little too on the nose for me but I digress.
As someone who grew up to admire strong heroines, I was surprised to recall that I identified with Bella. I adored her. I wanted to be her. It’s not that I think she is a weak character, I just think she is a painfully flat character, an empty vessel we could all project ourselves into and by far the most boring character in the series.
Am I the only one who wanted to read more about the other Cullens? Rosalie was and still remains to be my favourite character from the series.Saddled with terrible wigs in the films (sadly not unique to her character), relegated to background all while being the only voice of reason. My girl was done dirty and I wanted more. Yes, this is “Bella’s story” but the book I want to read is about an avenging vampire taking revenge in a wedding dress. It kills me that such an interesting character has to play second fiddle to Isabella “not having a personality is my personality” Swan.
There is so much to say about the Twilight Saga as a whole that I’m not sure there is anything I can really say that hasn’t been said before. So without any further ado…
TWILIGHT
The OG, the numero uno, the one that started it all.
It’s not that it’s badly written. It’s that it’s so juvenile.
Maybe age has skewed my perception and I know I am definitely not the target audience anymore yet from the first page I can’t help but feel disappointed. I know where it’s going, I’d read the books multiple times in the past, watched the film dozens more and I wanted that magic to be there.
It wasn’t.
Vampires aside, it’s also wildly unbelievable.
Look I’m willing to suspend disbelief as long as it’s moderately plausible.
The most egregious example of this is the Cullen’s themselves. Is Stephanie Meyer really trying to tell me that the Cullen “children” enjoy repeating High School over and over again instead of doing literally anything else with their time? High School was and remains to be a blur of hormones, heartbreak, and Hell on earth. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to repeatedly inflict that on themselves.
Menstruation is also ignored. You know that little thing 50% of the population does. How do the Cullen’s cope in an enclosed environment with a bunch of women on their periods? Especially when Jasper attempts to attack Bella over a paper cut... It’s things like that keep me up at night.
I found Bella so mind numbingly boring and she just annoyed me to no end. We get it, you’re awkward, clumsy, and so painfully average. Edward is just a borderline stalker who routinely pushes boundaries (something 50 Shades doubles down on) and the dialogue is just so cheesy. Seriously, my lactose intolerance was flaring up. Lines such as;
“About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”
Had me cramping worse than all those ill advised wine and cheese nights I inflict on myself.
That aside, the book is relatively engaging and even though I found my eyes rolling so far into the back of my head I could practically see my brain, I didn’t hate it. The magic was gone. The romance was unhealthy and the plot plain.
(New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn- below the cut)
NEW MOON
How this was my favourite book for so long is beyond me.
It’s so astronomically terrible I can’t even write about it without feeling triggered.
A book that basically boils down nothing more than: sad girl is sad and does suicidal things in order to “see” the love of her life.
Boo you’re like eighteen. What do you know of love? Nothing. Because you are a child. And that right there is the classic sign I’ve become an adult - I’m agreeing with the adults in this world.
There is no plot. No character development. Nothing.
Well there are the shifters but like anything remotely interesting Meyer created it’s quickly pushed to the background.
I just can’t with this book. I am a broken woman.
ECLIPSE
Teenage angst is angsty.
There’s a love triangle.
BACKSTORY!
More angst.
A minor sprinkling of plot.
More angst.
Oh look proposal.
Honestly there isn’t actually much to say about this because like New Moon it’s just a filler book of nothing. It's just meh.
As Jay says, it’s “best remembered as a fun experience in the cinema, with people yelling at the screen every time a character said something dumb".
BREAKING DAWN
Just no.
It’s too soon. It will always be too soon to relive this trauma.
I hated it as a teenager and I hated it as an adult.
Sorry. I just can’t overlook the impossible conception of Renesmee (the WORST character name in history) but am I just expecting to ignore the fact Jacob fell in love with a BABY?!
There is just so much about this book that I can’t even find the words for.
____
In sitting down to write this I have discovered that Twilight would have been better served as a single outing. While the first book certainly isn’t perfect the rest of the books are a steady decline into nothing and there is actually no reason for so many books.
NOTHING ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN THESE BOOKS.
While it is a series I once adored it just doesn’t hold up against all the other young adult offerings out there. If you want some suggestions? Hit us up. But Twilight beyond the first book, and really even that is kind of a stretch, is just not worth the pain.
+ Stalking aside pretty inoffensive.
- Literally everything else.
Final verdict: better left in 2008.

October reading and reviews by Maia Kobabe
Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee read by Kim My Guest
I listened to this as an audiobook without knowing anything about it and was delightfully surprised by my random choice! Set in a far future in which humans and supernatural beings have terraformed and colonized multiple worlds, this is an action-packed young adult sci-fi with magic in the vein of Artemis Fowl. The main character, Min, is from a family of shape-shifting foxes, traditionally the least loved and least trusted of the supernatural races (all of whom are drawn from Korean mythology). Her older brother Jun joined the Space Forces a few years ago and Min longs to join him and see other worlds once she is old enough. Then comes the devastating news: her brother is missing, and is being called a deserter; the rumor is that he abandoned his post to chase after the fabled Dragon Pearl. Min knows this can't be true, and she decides she has to prove it. She runs away from home and before long has tangled with pirates, gamblers, and ghosts. She ends up impersonating a cadet on her brother's military ship to search for clues where she befriends a young dragon cadet and a goblin cadet. One of best surprises was that this book has several nonbinary characters who use they/them pronouns, which are a completely normalized part of this society. The most unrealistic part is that Min is only 13 years old when she leaves home for a wild series of adventures that would tax the cleverness and resources of a full adult, but that's YA for you. I'd definitely recommend this as a fun quick read and I will probably look into other books by this author.
The Dark Fantastic by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas
I've been looking forward to this book's release since I heard a podcast interview with the author all the way back in 2015! The author examines the roles of black female characters in several of the biggest fantasy franchises of the past decade: Rue from The Hunger Games, Gwen from the BBC show Merlin, Bonnie Bennett from The Vampire Diaries and Angelina Johnson from Harry Potter. The author is incredibly well researched and draws on a wide variety of sources and quotes, both in the academic realm and the fandom realm. In each chapter she also recounts her personal experiences with these stories, and how her view on them has changed over time. The final chapter also dives into the popular fan reading of Hermione as a black character, and the author's perspective of one of the first outspoken black HP fans in the early days of HP fan groups online. I rarely count nonfiction books as guilty pleasure reading, but this was such a delight. I loved all of Thomas' insights into these characters and the ways black characters in the hands of white writers can fall into a predictable cycle of tropes: seen as spectacles, meet with hesitation, faced with violence and leaving a presence which haunts the rest of the text. I can't recommend this highly enough, especially if you enjoy thoughtful critique of literature and pop culture!
The Midwinter Witch by Molly Knox Ostertag
I was lucky enough to get a black and white advanced reader copy of this at BookExpo. The series continues to be extremely charming, with the characters facing challenges in the magical world which are often very easy metaphors for queer experiences. As the main character friend group has grown larger, each character's story arc is a bit shorter because the author must balance out more character's time on the page. But I am still very captivated by this series and glad that this book ended in a way which leaves room for more!
Wait What? By Heather Corinna, Isabella Rotman and Luke B Howard
This is a short, friendly, accessible guide to sex ed topics. The language is very inclusive of queer, trans and nonbinary people, and aims to entertain and destigmatize as well as educate. I love the playful artwork by Isabella Rotman and the bright colors by Luke B Howard. Appropriate for middle schoolers up to young high schoolers.
The Hard Tomorrow by Eleanor Davis
This book is an emotional distillation of the hopes and fears of our current climate, authored by one of the major talents working in comics today. Set in a near future America in which Zuckerberg is President, human-rights violations have increased, and paranoia about surveillance is at an all time high, the lead characters are dreamers fighting for a better future. Hannah and Josh live on a small plot of land, hoping to build their own house, plant a garden, and start a family. Hannah is a hospice worker and an activist, part of a group called Humans Against All Violence, which is protesting the use of chemical weapons. Josh is a stoner who just can't quite get any of his optimistic, sustainable-living projects started. They've been trying to get pregnant for a while, a decision that Hannah's activist friend/crush Gabby doesn't understand. The story climaxes when a protest march is met with police violence, putting Hannah's friends in legal and physical danger. She and Josh each separately have an intense experience of the constant nearness of mortality. Davis' art is alive with details, both of the natural world and the expressive body language of the characters. No one draws like her, and it is a painful joy to live in her world for a little while.
The Sunken Tower by Tait Howard
I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this delightful, strange, D&D infused comic. Dig is a down-on-his-luck wizard and thief whose day goes from bad to worse when he is kidnapped by red-cloaked minions and carried to an underground prison. The Blood Cultists need enough living sacrifices to free the horrible monster they've pledged their loyalty to. Dig wakes up in a cell with Iana and Crina, two adventurers. They don't plan to just wait around to be sacrificed. The three escape and enter a dangerous underground maze, with the Blood Cultists one step behind. Are they heading towards the surface, or straight into the monster's mouth?
Good Talk by Mira Jacobs
I highly recommend this audiobook, read by the author and a full cast. It's a very short production, under four hours, the majority of which is dialogue. Mira opens with a series of conversations with her five year old son that begin with queries about Michael Jackson and head into questions about race, the treatment of brown and black people in America, and the experiences of mixed-race families. Mira dips back and forth between memories from her own childhood in New Mexico, conversations with her East Indian immigrant parents, memories of dating, temping and writing in New York in her 20s and 30s, meeting her Jewish husband and his Republican parents and scenes from the lead up to the 2016 election. I loved the quickness of the narrative, the way nothing was over-explained or lingered on. My brain immediately suggested that this book would probably make a very good comic!
How To Do Nothing by Jenny Odell
Jenny Odell makes a case for paying attention as an act of resistance, resilience, and a necessary step in being able to think critically and organize for activism. She worries that the "attention economy" (the persuasive design of social media and advertising) is leaving modern people, especially people who are already marginalized or in financially precarious positions, no room for quiet, introspective thought. New ideas often need time and space to grow, but who in this world has time and space to spare? Only the well-to-do, who should not have a monopoly on time to do nothing. Odell roots her book in the Bay Area, specifically in Oakland, drawing on anecdotes of native plants and birds as well as the histories of parks, unions, and labor in the Bay Area. She returns frequently to the story of the Useless Tree, a tree too twisted to be logged for timber, which was able to grow old and strong, sheltering a whole ecosystem under it's many branches. This is a refreshingly un-prescriptive book. Despite many critiques of facebook and twitter, Odell doesn't advocate for deleting one's accounts, but rather a kind of mindful resistance from within. The conclusion includes a call for Manifest Dismantling (a radical opposite of Manifest Destiny)- a hope that humans will begin to carefully unmake some of the things we have built, un-daming rivers, breaking up concrete shores and tearing up lawns to replant with native plants. I listened to this book as an audiobook, but I kind of wish I had read it on paper instead, because ironically I don't think I fully gave it the attention it deserved- I was working while listening to most of it, which felt pretty hypocritical.

Full Moon Madness (06/19/19)
Another month, another Full Moon Madness!  Hope everyone had a great “Strawberry Moon” earlier this week! (yes, I look these up each month)
Tumblr media
And with us not posting one for the past couple months, this post is jam packed with each!!
Note: for some of our H2O/Mako Mermaids faves, I have quite a lot of updates for each, so I think for those I’m just going to list their name and then the updates pertaining to them underneath? (I’m still trying to figure out a format for these)
Chai Hansen in the his last Shadowhunters episodes
Chai may not of been in the actual last episodes of the supernatural drama, Shadowhunters (which aired May 6th), but he gave one hell of a performance in the remaining episodes he was in. A clip of his last episode can be found below.
youtube
I should say that he may not of been in the actual last episodes, but Jordan’s presence was definitely felt in the first half of the finale.
And right after the finale aired, a message from Chai was posted where he explained what his time on the show meant to him, his love for the fans, etc. Makes me love him so much more, honestly!
Chai is actually attending Pandemonium Con 2 in London this October, for those interested in meeting him!
Luke Mitchell:
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in the last F.M.M post, I mentioned that Luke’s new show, The Code, was going to air on April 9th. It’s now in full swing, and Luke’s been promoting it heavily on his social media! His lovely wife, Rebecca Breeds, was even in an episode! They’re relationship goals (I loved watching the Home & Away episodes they were in back in the day) and I always love seeing them in and/or supporting each other!
-It was also announced in late May, that he’ll be starring in an Australian film, Black Water: Abyss. Phoebe, Claire and Cariba dealt with sharks. Looks like, Luke’s dealing with crocodiles in this? So much nope.
Cariba Heine in Everyone is Doing Great:
Tumblr media
We always get super excited when Cariba has a new role! (I say this & I still haven’t seen her portrayal as Ebony in H&A...and I call myself a fan) Everyone is Doing Great is an independent comedy series (or short, I’ve seen both) where two guys have to regain their sense of success when their popular vampire drama is finished. It looks like Cariba’s playing the role of Isabella Beck (how many times has she played a Belle now?) Below is the teaser trailer. The best bet for more info seems to be their instagram/social media.
youtube
Claire Holt:
Tumblr media
-She’s posted several adorable photos of her newborn son, James! She’s so happy and in turn, we’re just as ecstatic for her!
-She took part in fellow Vampire Diaries cast mates’ podcast, Directionally Challenged, which released on Mother’s Day. In the episode, she explains how she’s handled her pregnancy thus far (she was still pregnant with James during the recording), the predictions she has on how her family will parent and she bravely speaks of her miscarriage. I highly recommend giving the episode a listen! To listen to it, I say check out Spotify or wherever you stream music/podcasts.
-We finally have a trailer for A Violent Separation, which can be viewed below. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Claire’s in the movie as much as I’d like. But hear that southern belle accent. *swoons* (of course I’m terrible and updated about this too late. It’s now on demand for your viewing pleasure!)
youtube
-Claire Holt is set to attend TVDCon Chicago on June 30th and I can’t contain my excitement! I’m attending the Con that day to meet her again (aka: make a fool of myself), attend her panels, etc. I’ve had the pose for my photo picked out for awhile and I hope it works out/I actually ask her (hint: it’s H2O related!). Will I be seeing any of you there?
Angus McLaren in The Naked Wanderer:
It looks like our Angus is finally getting the recognition and love he deserves! He’s the lead in a new film called: The Naked Wanderer and oh my goodness, does it look hilarious! Based on a true story, Angus’ character, Brian, walks throughout Australia butt naked in order to win back the heart of his girlfriend, Jasmine. But since this looks to be a romantic comedy, you know things are going to get interesting and a tad crazy. I am so beyond excited to see this film and am just in awe of Angus’ work! HE SINGS for crying out loud! Also fellow H2O cast mate and his BFFL, Jamie Timony, will have a role in the film as well! Honestly, makes me want to see this even more! Looks like this is now in theater and available on demand (possibly only for Australians though).
youtube
Oh and Angus is also returning to Home and Away later this year as Lance Salisbury! (Me: “I didn’t even know he was in Home and Away!”) it sounds like it might be a main role, and honestly, it’s about time another H2O cast member gets a main role on this show! H&A fans, please let us know when you spot Angus in new episodes.
Out of all the upcoming projects and what not, what are you most looking forward to our H2O cast?
Until the next update,
Kelly

Summary: It is commonly known that when a vampire turns two hundred years old they develop special powers. This is what Hakyeon, Taekwoon, and Jaehwan experienced when they turned two hundred.
This is Part Four of the Clan Diaries series. To read from the beginning click here!
Hakyeon
Hakyeon remembers the day he first discovered his powers very well. He had been having little glimpses into the future for several years, but he chalked that down to him being a vampire. He was sure Taekwoon and Jaehwan had been having dreams like him but they just didn’t feel like telling him. So it was a bit of a shock to him when his dreams became more and more frequent leading up to his two hundredth birthday. He finally opened up to Jaehwan and Taekwoon about his recent visions. They admitted to him that they had never had dreams like he had. Once he heard that Hakyeon became concerned. Why was he having such vivid visions of the future in his dreams? It all came to head on the day of his two hundredth birthday.
The day started out normally for Hakyeon. He woke up, got ready for the day, and proceeded to try to wake up the other two vampires living in the house. But something felt . . . off. As he put his hand on the the door knob to Taekwoon’s room he suddenly felt like he had floated out of his body. He saw himself opening the door, just to be met with Taekwoon throwing a pillow in his face. Then he heard Jaehwan banging at the closet door, screaming about how Taekwoon had locked him in there when he tried to wake him up earlier. Hakyeon then felt like he was being yanked back into his body. He gasped, letting go of the door knob in his shock. He wrapped his arms around himself, as if to confirm he hadn’t floated away. Hakyeon’s eyebrows furrowed as he reached for the door again. He twisted the door knob and pushed the door open wide. He was quick to dodge the pillow that was thrown at him. Hakyeon was more shocked as he ran over to the closet, and sure enough Jaehwan had been locked in it. Hakyeon took a few steps back. “Hakyeon are you okay?” Jaehwan asked when he saw how pale the older had gotten. “I think so?” Hakyeon replied his right hand coming up to rest on his temple. Taekwoon looked concerned as he quietly led Hakyeon to sit on the bed. “What happened?” He asked. Hakyeon shook his head a bit. “You know how I have dreams of the future?” Jaehwan and Taekwoon nodded. “I think that just happened, but while I’m awake.” There was a moment of silence in the room. Taekwoon’s eyebrows furrowed. “Hold on a minute.” Taekwoon walked over to the shelves he had in his room. He scanned over the titles until he found the one he was looking for. “Jaehwan could you get Hakyeon some water?” Jaehwan nodded and went to do so. Taekwoon read over the pages of his book.
“I think I have an idea about what’s happening.” Hakyeon turned over to Taekwoon. “What’s your theory?” Taekwoon sat on the bed next to Hakyeon. “You turn two hundred today. From everything that has been written by other vampire clans it would seem we get special powers when we turn two hundred.” Hakyeon tilted his head. “So I can see the future?” Taekwoon shrugged. “Only one way to figure out right? See if you can see what I’m going to do when Jaehwan comes back.” Hakyeon frowned. “How am I supposed to do that?” Taekwoon shrugged. “I don’t know. Think about him?” Hakyeon sighed as he closed his eyes and focused on Jaehwan. He felt light headed and was once again ripped out of his body. He saw Taekwoon walking over to Jaehwan and dumping the glass of water over the unsuspecting man’s head. When he returned to his body he looked to Taekwoon. “You were going to pour the water on his head?” Taekwoon smiled. “So you can predict the future.” Taekwoon looked back to his book. “You must be a really powerful vampire. Usually it takes months for other vampires to master their power.” Jaehwan came back into the room then, and he gave Hakyeon the glass of water. “So what’s going on?” Taekwoon patted Jaehwan on the shoulder. “Hakyeon can see the future.” Jaehwan looked confused. “But why is he getting that power now?” Taekwoon shrugged once more. “No one has been able to figure it out. I guess vampires just get more powerful when they reach two hundred.” Jaehwan hummed. “So it’s like vampire puberty?” Hakyeon snorted. “I guess you could call it that. I hope it’s nothing like actual puberty though.” The trio laughed before going to properly celebrate Hakyeon’s birthday.
Taekwoon
Taekwoon had been very fearful of his two hundredth birthday. He knew Hakyeon’s power had been easy to control since he was a very powerful vampire, but Taekwoon wasn’t as strong. He was so afraid of getting a power that was dangerous to the people around him. He could only hope that he didn’t get anything like fire or lightning. He knew he would never be able to live with himself if one of his friends, well more like family, was injured because of him. Taekwoon never could have predicted how his two hundredth birthday would go.
Hakyeon had been warning him all day that something was weird about that day. The trouble was Hakyeon couldn’t see what was going to go wrong. Every time he tried he would see nothing, which led Hakyeon to believe something terrible was going to happen. But Taekwoon didn’t listen to him. In hindsight, Taekwoon was being a complete idiot for not listening to the older vampire. Usually he would have listened and stayed home with his clan, which had just gained two new members. But for the last eighty years Taekwoon had done the same thing for his birthday, and he wasn’t about to break tradition. Taekwoon would bundle himself up and head to the shops. He hadn’t told anyone about his little collection of things he found pretty, which is why he would limit his shopping for such items to one day a year. He would spend the entire day looking for the perfect gift for himself. When he found it he would sneak himself back into the house with his prize and hide it in a room that was hidden in his closet. Taekwoon smiled at himself at the thought of his “pretty room” as he called it. On days he felt like the world was crashing around him he would sit there for hours and just look at his treasures, admiring the beauty he felt he didn’t deserve to possess. So, foolishly, he ignored Hakyeon’s warning and bundled himself up. He walked to the shops, making sure to check that none of his clan members had followed him. The day was hard, since the shops didn’t have anything he felt he could put in his collection. That was until he walked into the toy store.
There, in the far back of the shop, was a little doll. Her dress was a beautiful shade of green, which matched the color of her glass eyes. Her hair flowed in black curls down to her waist, and she had the cutest little bonnet on. Taekwoon picked the doll up, and that was when he heard something. He must be buying that dolly for his daughter. What a lucky girl she is to have such a pretty doll. Taekwoon whipped his head around. The voice sounded like one of a child. He turned around and sure enough there was a little girl standing behind him, looking longingly at the doll in his hands. I wish I could have a pretty dolly. Taekwoon nearly had a heart attack. The girl’s mouth wasn’t moving. That was when Taekwoon knew he needed to get home. Now. Before he left he paid for the doll, and he bought the little girl a doll as well since he knew the guilt would kill him if he didn’t. The second he walked out of the shop he regretted coming. The street was crowded with people. Taekwoon took a deep breath and walked through the crowd, hoping he could make it home without any incidents. But suddenly he heard whispers. They started off as quiet little whispers, but they were quickly getting louder and louder until it felt like every thought the people around him had was taking turns beating at his skull. It was so loud, and Taekwoon felt like his knees were going to give out from the pain the noise brought.
He didn’t know how he managed to stumble his way home, but he must have looked dreadfully ill if the way the crowd parted for him was any indication. Hakyeon tried to greet him at the door but Taekwoon pushed past him, saying he felt sick and would be back downstairs after a nap. Taekwoon crashed through his bedroom door and locked it behind him before he locked himself in his pretty room. He could hear the thoughts that his clanmates were thinking. Their thoughts felt like knives stabbing into his brain. He took the doll he had purchased and held it to his chest, trying to will the pain away. Finally, he had managed to calm himself down and the pain faded. The thoughts buzzing in his skull turned into soft whispers once more. He took a few deep breaths before he stood up from where he had crouched on the floor. He placed the doll in her place, fixing her dress and hair in the process, and went to tell Hakyeon about his new power.
Jaehwan
Jaehwan was one of the first vampires in their clan to be excited about turning two hundred. Hakyeon and Taekwoon had such cool powers. Hakyeon had predicted the lottery numbers that got them the money to buy the house they were currently living in. Taekwoon had used his power on almost every sugar daddy he had so he always knew what they wanted and their intentions. He was so excited to get a power. So when he woke up on his birthday to nothing happening he felt cheated. Was this some sort of joke? It had to be since he wasn’t presenting any new powers. Jaehwan huffed as he made his way downstairs.
“Good morning birthday boy!” Wonshik called as he made his way down to breakfast. Jaehwan pouted as he sat down. “This is a bust of a birthday. I don’t have any powers!” Hongbin looked concerned. “Really? Ummm, maybe you’ll be like Taekwoon and your powers won’t hit you until the end of the day?” Jaehwan brightened up a bit that the thought. “You’re right! Maybe my powers are just a little delayed.” With his hope restored he enjoyed the day. The clan had agreed to do anything he wanted for his birthday and he was excited to just have a day for the focus to be on him. Jaehwan decided to go shopping first. Taekwoon sheepishly walked up to Jaehwan. “Is it okay if I stay home for the shopping trip?” Jaehwan was disappointed. He really wanted this to be a shopping trip with the entire clan. Taekwoon looked incredibly guilty. “I’m sorry. I know you really wanted all of us to go but . . .” The older man took a deep breath. “I’ve been really scared of crowds since I got my powers. I’m afraid of losing control and having that pain from the first time come back.” Jaehwan’s eyebrows furrowed. Taekwoon had never been so forward with his emotions before. It was kind of shocking to hear the older man open up so much. Jaehwan smiled and rested his hand on Taekwoon’s arm. “It’s fine. You can stay home if you need to. We have plenty of things to do once we get home so you can join us then, okay?” Taekwoon gave him a little smile before nodding. “I’m sorry.” Jaehwan patted Taekwoon’s shoulder before making his way to the front door.
The shopping trip was fun, and Jaehwan had a lot of new things as a result. Once the group got home they were greeted with a decorated kitchen. Taekwoon stood in the middle of the room holding a cake. “Happy Birthday Jaehwan!” Everyone yelled. Jaehwan couldn’t help but smile as he blew out the candles. “You guys planned this all along didn’t you?” Jaehwan turned to Hakyeon. “We did. We’ve been planning this for about three weeks now.” Jaehwan looked shocked. “You’ve been planning this for three weeks?” Hakyeon looked confused. “How do you know that?” Jaehwan laughed. “You just told me silly.” Hakyeon looked more confused. Hongbin spoke up. “No, he said we decided to do this last minute.” Jaehwan’s smile fell. “But I heard him say you guys have been planning it for weeks.”  There was a moment of silence before Taekwoon spoke up. “Jaehwan, tell me why I said I wanted to stay home today.” Jaehwan’s eyebrows furrowed. “You said the reason you weren’t gonna go was because you’ve been scared of crowds since you developed your powers.” Taekwoon looked shocked. “Actually I said that the reason I was staying home was because my stomach wasn’t feeling good.” Jaehwan couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Hakyeon seemed to catch on to what Taekwoon was implying. “Hongbin, lie about something.” Hongbin looked confused. “Why?” “Just do it.” Hongbin thought up a quick lie to tell. “I love Park Hyoshin.” Jaehwan rolled his eyes. “Hongbin, Hakyeon told you to tell a lie.” Hongbin looked offended. Hakyeon spoke up. “Hongbin did lie. He said he hates Park Hyoshin.” Jaehwan’s eyes widened. “But I didn’t hear that. I heard him say he loves Park Hyoshin.” Taekwoon smiled. “Looks like you’ve had your power this entire time.” Jaehwan turned to Taekwoon. “My power is?” Hakyeon answered the question. “You can only hear the truth. You’re like a human lie detector.” Jaehwan took a minute to process what Hakyeon had just told him before his eyes lit up. “I’m a lie detector!” Jaehwan screamed, jumping around with excitement. Jaehwan forced the clan to lie to him the entire night, enjoying the fact that he wasn’t cheated out of a power after all.

The #ShadowhuntersLegacy Theory--aka our Hail Mary throw #SaveShadowhunters
UPDATED as of 8/24/18 (see bottom of post)
I wasn’t sure if I had shared this theory on Tumblr or not, because sometimes I speculate on Twitter and then don’t remember to make a post over here. It turns out, I sort of did, a really long time ago, but the theory has evolved in light of a number of events in the past couple weeks, and most of the tinfoil-hat elements have been stripped out. Now it’s just sort of a Theory, as opposed to a Wacky Conspiracy Theory.
Before I begin, let me just say outright that this is not to give anyone false hope. Let’s be quite honest and admit that our chances don’t really look that great. But as I said in my post last night, there are reasons why I can’t bring myself to call a Time of Death on this whole thing yet. And this theory is a big part of it.
Let me also add a disclaimer that none of us knows what is happening behind the scenes. We don’t know the legal ins and outs that make up the Freeform/Constantin/Netflix Ménage à Torture so this is all just guesswork based on the pieces we have and a metric fuckton lot of supposition.
This could all totally be self-serving delusion. I’m not going to lie about that. But it’s already been put out there, so I’m going to stand by it until we see how this all shakes down in the end, if for no other reason than, on the off chance that some variation of this does end up happening, I have documented proof that I predicted it might.
Everyone okay with that? Then let’s go!
Where We Stand
Okay, look, we’ve been told, straight-up with no equivocation, that “it's not possible for this version of SHADOWHUNTERS to continue.” (Source: Constantin Press Release August 10) We have to accept that at face value. There is almost certainly not going to be a season 4. Something is in the way of that happening.
I don’t believe it’s lack of interest from potential buyers. I think it’s an unwillingness to reach a compromise on the part of the parties already involved so that someone else can pick up the show.
Tumblr media
Chances are good that the obstacle is @freeform/Disney. The show was developed specifically for Freeform as part of ABC Family Channel rebranding itself. Netflix got involved later to snag the international distribution deal, yes, but it’s possible that the show goes nowhere unless Freeform/Disney is willing to relinquish their distribution deal on it, which they may not be willing to do.
Why? Well, there’s always my DisFlix theory, which is a little out of date in light of recent developments but not yet dead in the water.
But @netflix could also be to blame. I’ve heard rumblings, and I have no idea where they originated or if they’re true or not, that Netflix’s international distribution deal gives them rights to the show for seven years. They may not be willing to give that up, and picking the show up for season 4 without being able to stream/rerun seasons 1-3 is really not going to appeal to any potential takers.
It’s also possible that @constantinfilm isn’t willing to lower the license fee on the show enough to make someone else willing to pick it up, but I honestly don’t believe that’s the case. 100% of nothing is nothing, so keeping the price jacked up beyond what anyone is willing to pay makes Constantin no profit. I see no motive for them to prove intractable in that regard, especially if they thought they could bundle a pickup of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments with development of a series based on The Infernal Devices and make even more money.
But, really, that is all sort of outside the scope of this post. Ultimately all we know is that something is standing in the way of the show being picked up by anyone who may be interested for season 4.
Which isn’t the same thing as saying all hope is lost. It’s just lost for “this version of SHADOWHUNTERS.”
Yeah, uh, What Other Version Is There?
We’re presently campaigning for Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. But The Mortal Instruments is ending. And by that, I mean the six-book well of source material the plot has been borrowing its vague overall direction from is coming to an end. The 2-hour movie (which originally should have been the entire fourth season, but oh well, we can’t really dwell on that) is supposed to cover the final book, and after that it would be entirely original plots.
In other words, after season 4, we wouldn’t have had Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments ANYWAY. It would have effectively been a spin-off featuring the same characters, even if the title of the show had remained the same.
And I think most of us were perfectly okay with that, or would have been had we stopped to think about What Comes Next after the book-based material ended. @janoda has been talking for months about wanting a spin-off centered around the Downworld. I’ve thought all along that the tense relations that the Downworld and the New York Institute have with the Clave in Alicante would provide a wealth of plot material once book-based material ran out. @janoda and I have been calling this hypothetical spin-off “Downworld: Revolution” but whatever you call it, it’s not “this version of SHADOWHUNTERS.” It’s a new version, featuring many/most of the same characters.
But That Was Just Talk Right?
Well, yes. Sort of. At first I thought (in my original Conspiracy Theory post) that what we might be seeing with this cancellation is a slightly more contentious scenario originating with Freeform’s recent strategy of ending shows after 3-4 seasons or so, and then spinning them off before they lose their audience through attrition, to keep them fresh and shiny. (see also: PLL and The Fosters.)
Then, once it seemed like it might be Freeform’s claim to Shadowhunters distribution rights that was preventing anyone else from picking the show up, I started side-eyeing the notion of a spin-off as a way of working AROUND Freeform. Because Constantin still owns the adaptation rights. Even if Constantin can’t continue making Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, they CAN make a new show, even one featuring the Shadowhunters characters and even with those characters played by the same actors. They just can’t continue making THIS VERSION of the show.
Which, again, is okay, because effectively this version of the show was going to come to an end anyway, and a new show was going to begin.
But I sort of pushed this notion of a spin-off to the back of my mind once all the talk about Constantin developing The Infernal Devices began. Because honestly I didn’t want to muddy the waters with the words “spin off” when we were trying to send such a definite, iron-clad message that The Infernal Devices was not an acceptable substitute for Shadowhunters. I did start trying to word my emails with terms like “our characters” and “our actors” while leaving those concepts open to the possibility of those characters and actors being in a new show.
(Now, however, in light of Constantin’s statement that hope is lost for “this version” of Shadowhunters, we have nothing to lose.)
And then, two weeks ago, something happened.
Starting the night before the Last Day on Set (August 2nd), the cast introduced a new hashtag--#ShadowhuntersLegacy. It never really caught on or trended, but Kat and Emeraude in particular were pretty aggressive about using it. Most of the main cast, with the exception of Isaiah, Matt, and I think Alisha, used it at least once, and I know Jade, Nicola, and some of the other supporting cast members did as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It struck me as a little strange. And, yes, it may very well be just a nice way to thank the fans by reassuring us that the ways in which we’ve touched their lives won’t be forgotten. But what was pinging me about it was the way it was adopted among the cast had clearly been coordinated. This wasn’t just happenstance that they all began using it at once.
And the word “legacy” implies continuation. A legacy is sort of the opposite of something ending. It’s something that carries on.
I bit my tongue about this for a few hours, and then when I was talking about it in DMs on Twitter to avoid tweeting publicly about it, @saadiestuff pointed out something I had known in the back of my head but hadn’t actually connected.
The Originals is getting a spin-off called Legacies.
(A spin-off that--I believe--will be bringing back a lot of the original characters even going back to The Vampire Diaries.)
So those messages and a bunch of tweets using the hashtag were trickling in from Thursday night onward. Then, on Saturday morning, Kat posted this:
Tumblr media
I mean...look at those last few lines? “The story doesn’t end here” and that parting shot, complete with a picture of her with her hand on a door?
But the cast doesn’t know anything about negotiations, right? Usually that’s true. However...
IF a hypothetical spin-off were being discussed, obviously the cast wouldn’t be part of the negotiations. But one of the first things those discussions would entail is inquiring (probably through their agents) about the casts’ interest and availability to return for the new series.
So the usual wisdom about the cast not knowing anything until shortly before we do doesn’t apply here. They would almost certainly know this was at least being discussed as a possibility, even if they didn’t know whether or not it would end up being a done deal.
There is also the live that Jade did a day or two before filming wrapped. I didn’t get to watch the whole thing because I lost my place when I was about 20 minutes in, so all I knew was that people got upset by some of the things he said which they felt indicated he didn’t feel there was any hope. @TheJessy34 on Twitter found it for me, and starting about 29:45, Jade talks about how the show in “this form” is over and how things can happen, yes, but he didn’t think if it continued it would continue in the way it has. (BEWARE OF POTENTIAL BOOK-BASED SPOILERS AT AROUND 33:00)
youtube
I’m tempted to include this tweet of Harry’s (the Monday after filming wrapped) for consideration as evidence of this possibility. Because Harry is the guy who likes to dole out clues for us to piece together (see also, 2x12 and the season 3 renewal livechat.)
Tumblr media
However it would be dishonest of me to do so without also including the fact that he denied this tweet had anything to do with anything:
Tumblr media
That said, boy, Kat sure was all over it, both on Instagram and Twitter:
Tumblr media
And it should be noted that Kat is STILL occasionally using the #ShadowhuntersLegacy hashtag. As is Jade, I believe.
I’m also tempted to offer into evidence this article from TVLine earlier this week:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I think the evidence supporting that is sketchy at best. All the medical puns point to a medical drama, and the cast is obviously not reassembling yet (though that verbiage could be figurative, as in “they’re signing the contracts” rather than literal, as in “they’re gathering to begin filming.) Public opinion seems to hold that the show in question is likely CBS’s Code Black and I have no concrete reason to assert otherwise.
I will say that in the event of a hypothetical spin-off, there would be some new cast involved (which could explain the “returning and new cast” line.) The book the 2-hour movie is based on, City of Heavenly Fire, has a fairly high body count. Chances are good that at least some of our fave supporting characters won’t be returning.
So. The TVLine article could be about us, but I’m not holding my breath.
UPDATED 8/24/18:
So it looks like the TVLine blind item may not be about Code Black after all.
Others, not me, did some sleuthing.
Tumblr media
This tweet from Seitzman is dated 8/22/18. The TVLine blind item was posted 8/13/18. I would say (and others have said) this could mean that whatever deal TVLine was referring was Code Black but then it fell through, except that tonight, TVLine assured us that once the show in question is revealed, the initial article would be marked as UPDATED.
Tumblr media
That has not happened with the TVLine article. If it had been about Code Black and the deal fell through, TVLine would have updated. Therefore, it’s looking fairly sure that TVLine isn’t referring to Code Black.
Which still doesn’t mean it’s referring to us. Let’s be very clear about that. There have been a lot of shows cancelled in the last six months. One other show that has been rumored to be on the verge of rescue is Designated Survivor, I believe (back in May or so, there was talk that Netflix might pick it up.)
All this means is that we’re a little more solidly in the running with regards to our chances that TVLine was, in fact, referring to us. That’s it. It’s not much, but it’s something.
I have reached out to TVLine to request that if it ISN’T us, they let us know. Because I really want us to be as realistic about our chances here as possible. As I said at the beginning of this post, this is a Hail Mary throw. Our chances are microscopically slim. But they do still exist.
(End UPDATED portion)
Which brings me to Isaiah’s post on Instagram yesterday:
Tumblr media
Again, right now we are looking at the one situation where the cast probably really would have an early clue of what is going on. Before any deal is inked, someone would have to go around and ask the cast (again, probably through their agents) “this is a possibility, if we can make it happen, are you in?” And if it was a done deal, the cast would DEFINITELY know, even if they weren’t at liberty to say anything yet. They would have already signed their contracts.
Isaiah doesn’t believe hope is lost. I have to believe he has a reason for thinking that. But we know “this version” of the show isn’t coming back. Where does that leave us?
A new version of the show, featuring most or all of our characters and cast.
So What Now?
Now, we wait. We maintain our presence. We hope. I meant what I said last night, at this stage there is nothing we can do to influence the outcome that we haven’t already done. We keep the hashtag alive. We keep emailing and sending postcards and letters and maybe the occasional gift, just to remind them we’re here.
But mostly we wait. And we find our joy in the show again. Because in the words of a certain warlock we all know and love, “if you don’t take time for the things you care about, you’ll forget why you’re even fighting at all.”
But Do We Know Who Will Be Carrying This Hypothetical Spin-Off So We Can Let Them Know We’re Interested?
Nope. Not a clue. Sorry. Unfortunately this means we should probably treat everyone as though we’re courting them. Even *gack* Freeform.
When Do You Think They’ll Announce It, If It’s Happening?
Well, *if* the TVLine blind article is about us (and again, I cannot emphasize strongly enough that I really have no reason to believe it is) it says filming could begin as early as this fall. Which means we’d have to have an announcement by then because no way is our cast--with so many social media junkies in their ranks--is going to keep that under wraps for long. So we’d know by then.
And maybe I’m being whimsical, but let’s look at Isaiah’s post from yesterday again:
Tumblr media
See where they are?
That’s the Jade Wolf mock-up that was featured at New York ComicCon last year.
Why would Isaiah use that picture, of any of the cast that he could have used, to send us the message “don’t give up”?
I think if this thing is going to happen, we may hear it announced at NYCC.
EDIT: 8/24/18
There has been some interesting activity that has sort of slipped under the radar this week, but I’ve been watching and noting. I haven’t been making a big deal about it, because I don’t want to give people false hope, but I’ve already shared this theory so it really can’t hurt to keep it up to date. Just remember that all of this is really the stretchiest reaching of all stretchy reaching. It’s flimsy and probably entirely in my imagination.
On August 13, after the Teen Choice Awards victory, Bryan Q. Miller tweeted this:
Tumblr media
I didn’t notice it until about a week later, when I noticed that Todd Slavkin had liked it. When queried, Bryan confirmed that the reference was exactly what I thought it was:
Tumblr media
So...something about the TCA victory triggered thoughts of the lyric, “I can feel it coming in the air tonight.” It had him feeling either anticipation (or possibly foreboding, and possibly of someone who had done something wrong getting a come-uppance.)
Then there’s this:
Tumblr media
On Monday, August 20, Matt Hastings used the tag #ShadowhuntersLives.
On Thursday the 23rd, he was unusually active and pretty much ALL about the show, except for one tweet:
Tumblr media
Why spend the morning making Shadowhunters tweets, drop in a single mention of The Originals, then go back to making more SH tweets?
Obviously Paul Wesley has a Shadowhunters connection (didn’t he direct an episode ;-P ?) but if he was just wanting to share memories of Paul Wesley and Shadowhunters, there was plenty of material to choose from.
Again, I have to reiterate that this is flimsy, because Matt doesn’t really need a reason to delve into nostalgia for ALL the shows he’s been involved with. It may not go any deeper than that.
But he wasn’t being nostalgic about ALL his shows. He was being nostalgic about THIS one.
So it immediately made me think of the connection @saadiestuff made when I was talking about the #ShadowhuntersLegacy tag, which is that it could be that Shadowhunters is getting a spin-off featuring the same characters, the way The Originals is getting the Legacies spin-off.
Because, as @malecficlibrary just said to me, #ShadowhuntersLives is a REALLY strange hashtag to use for for a cancelled show that has no hope. Like...?
Maybe Matt Hastings didn’t know about the #ShadowhuntersLegacy hashtag on Monday, so he used #ShadowhuntersLives. Then someone clued him in, so he dropped a The Originals/Legacies hint.
Like I said, flimsy, but I’m putting it out there anyway. Because why not?

My Top Ships of 2017
We all do it. You watch a show and automatically root for two people to be together whether it’s a “slow burn,” the introduction of a new character this season or between two people that barely share a plot line. It makes you continue to tune in episode after episode. Here is a list of my personal favorite ships for this year, 2017, from some of my favorite TV shows/series.
12. New Girl--Nick and Jess
Tumblr media
Just about that time when your DVR recording was about to cut off (because you know mine did right before they kissed) Nick and Jess finally met each other in the elevator of their apartment building. I’ve always really loved the two of them together and as the show’s fate hung in the balance I was ECSTATIC that they readdressed their feelings in the finale. I’m super excited it was picked up for another season (the last one), but I would have been perfectly happy with this ending for the couple.
11. Bates Motel--Dylan and Emma
Tumblr media
This couple is still one of my favorite reasons to watch Bates Motel. Yes, the show was a great re-imagining of a young Norman Bates and I loved the new take on familiar characters, but I also loved the new characters including Dylan and Emma. After season 2 I thought the two would be cute together. They had only a few story lines or rather scenes together, but my shipping brain was at it again. And then something magical happened! It’s like the writers could hear my thoughts and THEY GOT TOGETHER! And you know what? They were SUPER, BEYOND ADORABLE TOGETHER. In its final season there was a time jump and this happened:
Tumblr media
Needless to say I was over the moon. I’m still shocked they actually became a couple because I thought it would only be in my head. Love their ending and the family unit they created with their baby girl.
10. Anne with an E--Anne and Gilbert
Tumblr media
The Netflix original series brought a bit of a darker spin on the lovable tale by L.M. Montgomery, but just like all of the previous adaptations of Anne of Green Gables this version did a fantastic job showing Anne and Gilbert’s relationship. While Gilbert isn’t introduced in the first episode of this series, I eagerly awaited seeing him on the screen and I was not disappointed in his interactions with Anne; from the spelling bee to the classic Anne breaking the slate over his head. Several characters could tell the chemistry between these two (including one of my favorite characters Jerry). Thank goodness they’ll be a 2nd season so we can see this relationship progress.
9. Chicago Med--Rhodes and Reese
Tumblr media
Okay, so they might not ACTUALLY be together...yet (get on that writers!), but this year I discovered the ship between Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Reese from NBC’s Chicago Med. And I didn’t realize how BIG the fandom is! It was all thanks to season 2′s episode: Monday Mourning:

There’s just something about these 2 that is just so great! Their chemistry--wow! They just don’t get enough scenes together. In the current 3rd season (that’s unfortunately only been 4 episodes before the hiatus) they’ve had a few moments together (aka conversations), but it’s not enough. They keep getting set up with different potential love interests, when the writers should notice they have a good thing going already! Okay, rant over.
8. Victoria--Victoria and Albert
Tumblr media
After I finished binge-watching the first season of Masterpiece’s Victoria a few weeks ago, I was so sad there wasn’t more to watch. I needed more Victoria and Albert in my life. (Good thing the next season airs here in the US in a few weeks!) Going in, I didn’t know much about Queen Victoria’s reign, but was interested to learn more. I was pleasantly surprised with how addicted I got to the show, especially once Albert was introduced. I love how much they love and care for each other and know that rocky roads could be ahead, but am excited to watch the journey unfold.
7. Grimm--Nick and Adalind
Tumblr media
Another surprise pairing that I grew to LOVE! In Grimm’s second to last season, Adalind (ex-hexenbeast, turned human, then back--I think I got that right) was pregnant with Nick’s child. This “romantic” pairing could have been weird, but writers made it work and personally I fell in love with it. [It probably helped that Juliet was turning evil and then became Eve. Man if you listened to this and had no idea of the show it would all sound crazy.] The two made a great little family with son Kelly and I was shocked when Adalind’s daughter was fine with Nick. I really enjoyed these two together as the show came to a close earlier this year. Another piece of proof that sometimes two characters can be placed together after so many seasons and really work. But how could you not root for them with this adorable baby?

6. Reign--Bash and Mary
Tumblr media
Reign was one of my first binge-watches of the year. So, I know this couple might not [SPOILERS] end up together, but for me they were one of my TOP ships. Mary and Bash have a big relationship during the first half of season one and as much as I knew she’d wind up with Francis (the unfortunate ‘perks’ of watching an old show) I could only hope for all the Mash moments I could get. Mary was a hot commodity on the show and I think her and Bash were one of the best pairings. I’m happy with the way their story-line ended and liked Bash’s alluded help in season 4. Even though I would have loved to see him back on screen. This will forever be one of my favorite moments:

5. Arrow---Oliver and Felicity
Tumblr media
After a roller coaster ride of a relationship, Oliver and Felicity are OFFICIALLY MARRIED!!! (I guess you can say twice?) It’s been a long time coming and I know not everyone is a fan of the IT girl and the emerald archer together, but I have liked the two of them since day 1. It was one of my shipping moments of ‘this probably will never happen, but a girl can dream.’ I watched that season 2 finale when Oliver tells Felicity Slade thinks he has the woman that I love, a DOZEN times! I took any moment I could get. While there’s moments I didn’t love on this long journey, I am happy to see the two of them together and I love Felicity and William’s relationship. I’m happy that this year’s crossover finally made it official. We deserve it!
4. The Vampire Diaries---Caroline and Klaus
Tumblr media
KLAROLINE!!! I have been a fan of this ship for SOOO LONG! And just like any good ship you take anything you can get. This letter to Caroline at the end of the series finale of the Vampire Diaries is JUST what fans wanted. (Plus, we had a few great moments in the season too; from Caroline bringing her girls down to see Klaus, and I still think about their phone call, which might be from the previous season.) My fingers are crossed and double crossed for the final season of the Originals that we might see Caroline (maybe more than once?? Is that asking too much?) I mean Hope is at the school and even though Klaus can’t see her we must find some sort of loop hole. We’ll just have to tune in and watch!
3. Supergirl--Kara and Mon-El
Tumblr media
Before the heartbreaking season 2 finale and Mon-El’s return this season (MARRIED!), we saw the growth of an extremely cute couple filled with bickering, banter, and plenty of couch sessions. I loved seeing Mon-El adapt to Earth customs and for Kara step up as a mentor. Early on I felt the pull between these two because their chemistry was fantastic (as shown by their real life off screen relationship). I am so happy I got the 2nd season on DVD for Christmas to relive all these great moments:

2. The 100--Bellamy and Clarke
Tumblr media
Another ship I have shipped since episode 1. I’ve taken every little glance, conversation, touch. Being a Bellarke fan has taught you to not take anything for granted. (Especially when you have heard from the creator that they don’t intend for these two to end up together. Come on!) But season 4 gave us fans hope. They had several playback worthy moments and that finale! WOW! It’s the end of the world and he’s making jokes with her. They are both touching each other! (I still have chills just thinking about it!!) I can’t wait for this new season even though I know Bellamy is going to be with someone because they HATE us. In the meantime here are some big moments from last season!

AND THE NUMBER 1????
I wouldn’t be living up to this page if I didn’t make them my number 1 because they and we deserve it!
1. Teen Wolf--Stiles and Lydia
Tumblr media
It was a LONG time coming, but our pick was endgame, just like we predicted all along! Because the seasons were broken up I’m going to refer to season 6 as a whole (we deserved a lot more Stydia in the series finale, but that’s a rant for another day....) Despite, Dylan O’Brien not being around for more episodes due to his filming schedule, I think they did a nice job including him in the part A season. Sure, when I was watching it live I was pissed, but watching the episodes back I appreciate the moments we did get Stiles and how they included him in the season. Lydia and Stiles are one of my favorite couples of all times. I love their development, the chemistry between the two actors and strive to create characters who have such a powerful friendship and relationship. Here are some of the best moments from this year.

So, that’s my top 12 ships of 2017! A lot of my top couples were from shows that ended in 2017, so I can’t wait to see what new ones I discover in 2018. Let me know if you have suggestions!

Series et personnages news et histoires
Starring Zendaya, who won an Emmy for her role as Rue in the series, Euphoria is a mature drama about a group of teens navigating a world of drugs, sex, and relationships as they work through personal identity, trauma, and other struggles of life. The critically acclaimed series is praised for its cinematography, acting, and various other aspects of the show, but in particular, the way it approaches its subject matter so candidly. Alongside Zendaya is an astounding ensemble cast that includes Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and more. One true standout (aside from Zendaya, of course), is Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn. Jules is a transgender girl who moves into town and quickly starts a deep friendship with Zendaya’s Rue. A trans woman herself, Schafer’s portrayal of Jules is a key part of the show’s strength of diverse representation. Like Elite, Euphoria takes on the dark side of late adolescence, as teenagers are desperately trying to define themselves in some way while they transition into adulthood. A little more serious in tone than the Spanish-language Netflix series, Euphoria is a great choice for what to binge after Elite. There’s a reason no one could stop talking about the HBO Max show when Season 1 came out.
As if La Encinas didn't have enough drama and cough, ridiculously good-looking people season 4 of Netflix's steamy Spanish teen series Elite introduces us to a handful of new faces at the prestigious Madrid private school. Yes, we had to part ways with some favourite characters Lu!, but don't worry. The Blanco family, as well as a certain Franco-Spanish prince, stir up enough drama and heat with our OGs that you'll be too distracted to miss those who've moved on. In fact, the new additions both test and help bring out some facets of the rest of the characters that we haven't seen before. Rebeka Claudia Salas, who's still angry and heartbroken over Samuel Itzan Escamilla, learns more about herself as she gets close to the youngest of the three Blanco children. Guzmán Miguel Bernardeau, who's trying to make long-distance work with Nadia Mina El Hammani, reverts back to his old classist ways when he and Samuel vie for Ari Blanco's attention. Ander Arón Piper and Omar Omar Ayuso's relationship is tested when the Blancos' only son inserts himself in between them literally. And then there's Cayetana Georgina Amorós, who's all but given up on love until she gets caught in a storybook-like romance with the Prince. This new blood plays an essential role in both the intrigue and developing relationships at La Encinas, so it's important to make sure you have everyone pegged down. Ahead are Elite's newest cast and characters. When the final season of The Vampire Diaries was added to Netflix, that started a countdown to when the series will depart Netflix in full. Now, although we’ve not heard officially from either Warner Brothers Television on Netflix when this will be, Netflix has lost The CW titles in a manner that makes the removal date predictable. In the cases of The CW shows on Netflix, they remain on Netflix for the lifetime of the show plus five years afterwards. Season eight of The Vampire Diaries was added in March 2017 so therefore we are currently predicting seasons 1-8 of The Vampire Diaries are set to leave Netflix on March 2022. Netflix UK has already lost The Vampire Diaries with all 8 seasons departing in November 2020. Other regions streaming the show including Australia, India, Germany, Netherlands and other European countries we are unable to predict removal dates at this time. When will The Originals leave Netflix? Serving as a spin-off to The Vampire Diaries, The Originals ran alongside the mothership show between 2013 and 2018. Using the same prediction method as above, we’re currently expecting The Originals seasons 1-5 leave Netflix US in August 2023. The Originals remains on Netflix UK for now although that is expected to leave in the near future and probably before the US removal date. Other regions streaming the show including Australia, India, Germany, Netherlands and other European countries we are unable to predict removal dates at this time. Where will these shows end up? Almost certainly they’ll land in full on HBO Max which is where the majority of The CW shows have winded up after having left Netflix. It’s also where most new shows from the network land too. Will you miss The Vampire Diaries and The Originals when they leave Netflix? Let us know in the comments down below.
