The man on the radio says he went out last night to The Gaiety, and on a school night too. As ever, I'm distracted so don't catch exactly what it was he went to see. 'The Very Thought of You' with Ella Fitzgerald follows as he continues to extol the acting virtues of Dan Butler.

Weather today is mild with a heavy hint of chicken manure. Still preferable to the chemical 'fresh air' that the shiny metropolis denizens seem to have a penchant for.

The larger size moths have hatched indoors again, so I'm vying with them for the light of the screen.

The water butt dwellers are also busy increasing their numbers whilst diving away from the twig missiles that the Rooks keep dropping mid flight. The guttering is beginning to look like a strange kind of legless porcupine with the amount of nest material that's landed in it.

Obviously time to put in my bid for The Umbrella (Ireland only has one) ... all sorts of things to dodge now the breeding season is well underway. If you don't hear from me for a while, I either got buried beneath the latest nesting material deluge or I'm now part of someone's nest ;-) ...

A familiar mop of (slightly shorter) floppy hair swooped down and bundled him into a bone crushing hug. Simon reciprocated fiercely, he’d missed Wille so much and even though he knew that it was going to hurt, he couldn’t deny himself this moment to breathe him in.

Wille let go far too soon for Simon’s liking and grinned down at him. “Happy New Year,” he said. “How was your break?”

And just like that, Simon fell back into the familiar routine of Wille and everything that came with it.

When It Rains, It Pours

A drabble series written for the FHWM Friday the 13th prompt event.

Doorman Kristoff has a run of bad luck when Anna, dressed as the Morton Salt Girl for her friend's Halloween party, walks into the building with a bluster of wind and a dripping wet umbrella. Is it Friday the 13th? Or is it just Anna?

Part I: The Umbrella

Dark clouds stormed outside as Kristoff set up the yellow “wet floor” signs in the lobby. As if on cue, a tiny person in a shiny yellow raincoat walked in with a bluster of wind and slipped on the water dripping from her open umbrella. Kristoff stepped forward to catch her arm but they both fell. His heart stopped when her hood fell back and revealed a mess of reddish-blond hair, bluish-green eyes, and too many freckles. “Don’t you know it’s bad luck to open umbrellas inside?” he glowered. “But I’m the Morton Salt Girl!” “I hate Halloween," he sighed.

I do this in every Soulslike, I grab a normal sword, just a heap of metal with a handle, and I never fucking put it down. The game keeps giving me weird shit with wacky moves and status effects and they're all so cool looking, but I just fool around with them for a while and then go back to my vanilla ass weapon. Sorry, game designers, I'm sure your booster rocket glaive, mega-axe made of arms, and thunder god battery hammer are neat, but I'm going to poke all these monsters to death with an increasingly sharp toothpick like a tool.

"Raindrops keep fallin' on my head" sings BJ Thomas ... the man on the radio talks of all manner of Saints ... no traffic lady today, it's a Bank Holiday and on Bank Holidays it would seem the traffic needs no report.

It's not raining today. In spite of the Met Office and their dismal forecast of the traditional St Patrick's day downpours and sub zero temperatures, we're being treated to a nice bit of mild with hints of sunshine.

Mind you ... you'll still need 'the umbrella'. I say 'the' because here on the Emerald Isle, they do like to put an extra grammatical article in for good measure. Here we also have 'the Covid'.

As to 'the umbrella' ... as mentioned before in previous posts, they're pretty useless here as the wind will rearrange them for you. However, as the breeding season gets underway, and particularly because of the amount of Rooks we have, 'the umbrella' can come in real handy.

As the pictures attest to ... you need to have both your wits and 'the umbrella' about you. This year, I've even put a cover over the car having found one of the Rooks' presents all over the door handle.

So, as the birds fly overhead, always remember ... eyes down, 'the umbrella' up ... assuming, of course, that I haven't misunderstood and there really is only one umbrella ... and it's not your turn ...
