the thing is... JK Rowling did write the books. She certainly did write the books, which was the pivotal first step.
However, here is an incomplete list of people who meant more to my experience of reading and enjoying the Harry Potter books than JKR ever did:
My grandmother, who read them because she loved to read and because she wanted to understand what the hell her granddaughter - whom she'd recently moved 3,000 in part to live near - spent 90% of her time talking about; who passed away this past fall.
My other grandmother, who read them for more or less the same reason except without the cross-country move; who passed away in 2014. It was in her honor that I bought the current set of books I own.
The uncle-shaped family friend who always listened to me expound on my latest theories for the next book, and told me his own like an equal in intellectual debate
That one writer on Mugglenet's fanfiction archive who wrote a crack soap opera fic in which Professor McGonagall got pregnant from Crookshanks, and the children were cat-human hybrids whom they called "kiddens." That haunts me to this day.
Honestly, collectively every single person who wrote content, be it recordkeeping, fic, or analysis, for MuggleNet circa 2005-2008. Some people spent their internet-childhoods on Neopets or Club Penguin; I read every single page on MuggleNet.com.
The summer camp counselor who'd read HBP when I hadn't yet, and who responded to my positively tsundere attitude toward spoilers by telling me straight-faced that Harry started dating Luna [not Ginny]. A) The fucking audacity! she lied right to my annoying 10yo face! B) I got to experience the giddiness of finding out what happened twice, once then and again later when I read the book! Thank you, Natalie(?) from Y-Camp!
The two friends with whom I went to the DH midnight release party at my local secondhand bookstore, in closet cosplay. We were all in the first 5 people to get our books, and we promptly started reading them while standing outside the bookstore, in the light coming through the front window. 1 of them was parentally required to go to bed but the other and I stayed up all night reading, until we finished the books sometime mid-morning.
My dad, specifically when he (still) tells the story of having to make a "walk of shame" (his words) back to the bookstore the next afternoon, to ask if they had the broom we'd accidentally left behind.
The tourists from America, England, France and China who were all waiting in line at the Platform 9 3/4 overpriced photo op in King's Cross Station the same time I was, in the summer of 2013, which unironically made me feel more spiritually connected with humanity as a whole than possibly any other experience in my life. Like, this is embarrassing. It's a pure tourist trap. Yet people from LITERALLY all around the world had all made the same journey I had to be there, just because we all loved the same books. and that's...really special.
...you know? So, JKR is doing real harm to the trans community now, and will continue to do more and maybe even worse in the future; and I am so, so sympathetic and angry about that. I have no intention of giving her money or any other support ever again, nor of encouraging anyone else to do so.
But all her present vitriol is only drops in the lake of my warm memories. I don't let them give me a falsely rosy view of her, but nor will I let her poison them. And I encourage others to let themselves find the same balance, if they can.

Take My Breath Away
Tumblr media
The way his shirt hang loosely on your body, covering almost to your knees. 5:30 mornings of you, barefooted in his kitchen sipping on a cup of strong coffee while you make a cappuccino for him, knowing he needs sugar to jostle his nerves awake.
When a strand of your hair strayed from the ponytail strongly urge him to kiss your nape and redo your ponytail. And the days when you try to fit in those skinny jeans while he watch you drowsily in the warmth of the bed you shared. Trying to pull the zipper and ask him to hook your bra when you're rushing not to get late.
Routines never fitted his personality. His veins constantly search for curiosity and new things. But his day is not complete without holding your hand and kissing the back of your finger.
The way you curl on the bed in arguments while he brings the blanket to cover you from the cold and kiss you silently, hoping that tomorrow will be better.
When your eyes water, it never failed to make his heart clench painfully. Guilt and frustration for making tears stain your cheeks.
Little by little the oath of never letting anyone reach beyond his Infinity is chipping away every time your fingers reach for him or when you sleep by his side, laying your head on his chest to listen on the way his heart beats until it lulls you to sleep.
It has become a norm to search for your eyes when he laughs. To watch you smile and contented by his side. To listen in your voice when you act coquettishly for his attention and doting.
The patience you have when he can't hold himself together. But little did you know he's scared the moment you've had enough of the time he's missing, the times his promises are broken. And the reality that he can never give you those normal nights of lazy cuddles because he's needed in three locations at the same time.
He's not stupid to be blind that it's taxing to you. Emotionally taxing. Even if he grew with the sole purpose of becoming the strongest where emotions will only hinder his judgement he could at least know the reason why no one has ever reached beyond his Infinity.
Because he a complicated person to be with.
Cold hands wrap around his waist, palms finding their way to feel the ridges of his abdomen as he hum at the softness pressed against his back.
"Hey," a bit hoarse, you greeted him.
"Did you sleepwalk 'til here?" Satoru laughed seeing his shirt askew, exposing a generous view of your shoulder blades and covering just above your knees.
"Thought you already left."
Satoru snorted at the idea.
"Told you we'd have a lazy morning today, cuddles for lunch and—" Satoru turned around and met your drowsy eyes. "—whatcha think for tonight Baby?"
You rolled your eyes and peek on the sizzling pan of egg, bacons and ham.
"Let's go shopping." You batted your lashes, but laugh when he pout, not the answer he expected. Nonetheless he nod and press his lips unto your temples.
"I'm wearing that dress you bought for me." You giggled.
Oh great, of all the times you could, you really had to test his sanity in public.
"I'll go take a shower, I love you." You tried to withdraw from his arms but Satoru stood completely steeled and held you tightly. His eyes search for yours.
He can't let your I love yous pass. You don't usually say it. He knows because he notices the days when you say those words to him. And everytime those sweet words fall past your lips he cherishes them so much.
"I love you too Baby," Satoru whispered, nuzzling the bridge of your nose with the tip of his nose.
A smile curved in your lips and close your eyes to bask in the bliss of a rare morning embrace. He would do anything in his jurisdiction to be the only person you say those words to. Your delights and frustrations, your crazy and your mess.
He never dreamed of anything. Apprehensive that love would tangle his already twisted life. Then you came along. He doesn't know know if his personal theory of love being the most twisted curse of all—is it really a blessing or a curse.
When words aren't enough to tell, tears fell. And so it goes, when it's hard to explain how his heart pounds because of you, perhaps kissing you will show how much you mean to him.
Soft lips take you gently as you pliantly let Satoru in your mouth in sweet sighs and low grunts. Drunk in the daze of slow and delicate kisses that held you both in equal adoration and desire. You easily melted and clutch his arms for support.
"Satoru," you whined, leaning your forehead against his. The pad of your fingers lightly brush the tingling sensation left from his kisses. A light bulb clicked in your mind, and by your tiptoes you pulled him down.
Slanting your swollen lips over Satoru's and eagerly nibbled his lower lips, sucking them until you feel them soft and tender while Satoru can do nothing but accept your kiss. Smiling at your desperate attempt to punish him in a way he can barely call it as one.
"You take my breath away," Satoru said in genuine affection, smiling between gasps, pressing on more chaste kiss over your lips. "Do something about it Baby." He hoisted you up his waist and brought you to the direction of the bathroom.

From Strangers to Something Brilliant
A Death Cab Playlist for Hisakiki Week 2023 by @hisakikiweek
Tumblr media
I only had one song saved in my playlist draft, so I made a last minute Death Cab Hisakiki playlist again! The title comes from a mix between a line from “My Mirror Speaks” and the last line of “Binary Sea” (which is one of my all time favorite Death Cab lyrics…)
From Strangers to Something Brilliant
All songs by Death Cab for Cutie:
Information Travels Faster (Day 1: Love Letter) Jealousy Rides With Me (Day 2: Jealousy) My Mirror Speaks (Day 3: Shame) Passenger Seat (Day 4: Late Night Date) Brothers on a Hotel Bed (Day 5: Only One Bed) Diamond and a Tether (Day 6: Wedding) Binary Sea (Day 7: Getting Back Together)
Summary lyrics are cited after the cut:
Information Travels Faster (Day 1: Love Letter)
I intentionally wrote it out to be an illegible mess You wanted me to write you letters, but I'd rather lose your address And forget that we'd ever met and what did or did not occur
Jealousy Rides With Me (Day 2: Jealousy)
'Cause jealousy rides with me Such a faithful companion no one could be For a journey that leads to the outskirts of time But don't worry about me, I'll be fine
My Mirror Speaks (Day 3: Shame)
With every sun that sets I am feeling more Like a stranger on a foreign shore With an eroding beach disappearing from underneath I always fall in love with an open door With a horizon on an endless sea As I look around the ones who were standing right in front of me And then my mirror speaks with irreverence Like a soldier I can't command It sees a child in the body of a full-grown man And he's a man who hides from all that binds And a mess of fading lines And there's a tangled thread inside his head With nothing on either end A new position for a different view And nothing changes but the slightest hues And I am standing face to face
Passenger Seat (Day 4: Late Night Date)
The darkest country road And the strong scent of evergreen From the passenger seat as You are driving me home When you feel embarrassed Then I'll be your pride When you need directions Then I'll be the guide For all time
Brothers on a Hotel Bed (Day 5: Only One Bed)
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting Cause I'm not who I used to be These wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below Who turned your way and saw Something he was not looking for Both a beginning and an end But even at our swiftest speed We couldn't break from the concrete In the city where we still reside Cause now we say goodnight From our own separate sides like brothers on a hotel bed
Diamond and a Tether (Day 6: Wedding)
Pity, take pity on me Cause I'm not half the man that I should be Always turning to run, From the people I should not be afraid of It's like love is a lesson, That I can't learn I make the same mistakes at each familiar turn Cause I know you can't hold out forever Waiting on a diamond and a tether From a boy who won't jump when he falls in love He just stands with his toes on the edge And he waits for it to disappear again
Binary Sea (Day 7: Getting Back Together)
Oh Atlas could not understand The world was so much smaller than The one he used to hold before But the weight it brought him to the floor As you watched him struggle to his feet Oh come my love and swim with me Out in this vast Binary Sea Zeros and ones patterns appear They'll prove to all that we were here So lean in close or lend an ear There's something brilliant bound to happen here

Ski Lift
Day 5 of NaNoWriMo prep! I spent most of my writing time translating my plot outline into a 50-day timeline of events, including locations, holidays, work shifts, and key events happening each day. About half of those days don't have content yet, but they don't all need to.
Today's writing blurb comes from a dream I had last night. I dream most nights and they tend to be on the weird side, but I don't often remember them by the end of the day. I figure if it's still in my head at this point, I should try to get some of it on paper.
-----
There was no way I was going to make it up that mountain. I was going to be stuck here at the base. The snow would start to fall again, the wind would pick up, and I would slowly but surely be buried until I simply fell asleep and then died. Or maybe I'd be eaten by a bear first. Were there bears here?
But visions of my pathetic, frozen figure looking pleadingly up at the lights above were interrupted by a gaggle of laughing, shrieking kids as they skied by me and raced each other to the lift.
I watched as they each grabbed into a lift cable, tucking it neatly between their legs and leaning back on the pad for support as they slowly ascended the slope.
"Tig! I can't believe you beat us back here!"
Winnie pulled up next to me, transferring her left pole to the right hand and looping her spare arm through mine. When I didn't respond, she looked me up and down and sighed.
"You never got on the first time, did you?" The look on my face must have been answer enough because suddenly she was pulling my forward and I, who had no clue how to stop myself from moving, went with her. "Come on, we'll go up together."
By the time I'd figured out how to position my feet straight ahead without my knees buckling in, we were behind two couples. Tig tapped the man directly in front of us on the shoulder. "Hey, help her get off at the top, okay?"
He gave me a brief, pitying glance, "Sure."
I wondered just how much like the Italian flag my face must look between the nausea, terror, and embarrassment I felt right now. I tried to say thanks, but all that came out was a wheeze of air that led into a half sob.
And then the couple was gone and I felt Tig's strong hands push me forward and manhandled me onto the next cable. "Just hold on and lean back. I'll see you at the top!"
"Wait!" It was the only word I'd uttered in over an hour, but it was too late. The cable tugged me along and I gripped the handholds with every ounce of strength I had left.
I remembered Tig's instructions and tentatively let more of my weight lean back into the padded seat. It felt secure enough. Maybe. I focused on my breathing and looked straight ahead. Although I couldn't see behind me, I felt the distance growing with each moment we were pulled forward. I wondered how many yards I would have to roll down before I broke my neck.
Breathe. Just breathe. Think about the welcome video. Remember the floor plans. Five steps from the sidewalk to the doors. Step into the warmer, wait 30 seconds. Check in's on the right, elevators just past them. Hot cocoa and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies - no raisins - upon arrival. Room 6834. 1 king bed, outside view. Dinner at 7. Drone fireworks at 8.
And then, hands were helping me - okay pulling me - off of the cable and depositing me on the bench. The man whose name I didn't know gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder before skiing back down the slope we'd just ridden up. Madness.
"I knew you could do it!" Tigg pulled up next to me, squeezing my shoulders with one arm before dragging me up. "C'mon, let's see if we can check in early while everyone else is skiing."

Bela x Maiden ----Songbird Ch. 11
Ch.1 Ch.2 Ch.3 Ch.4 Ch.5 Ch.6 Ch.7 Ch.8 Ch.9 Ch.10
Tumblr media
It is very ironic that your arrangement –you're too scared to call it anything else— with Bela Dimitrescu, of all people, is the healthiest one you've probably ever had.
For a mutant detached from humanity, with no experience in matters of the heart... she sure does an excellent job of making a girl feel special.
She makes a point to check up on you at least once every day. Asks if you've eaten and slept well, regularly compliments you and –after making sure nobody else is around— always hugs you before she leaves.
She has brought you thoughtful little gifts over the past two weeks; a book you once told her you were interested in, a tiny mp3 player with earphones because she knows how much you've missed modern music.
Half of you is growing... content, with the way things are developing for you. The other half is poisoned with ever-spreading guilt.
Here you are, enjoying all these things from her, in a castle that provides for almost all your needs, while your family is struggling to get by without you. Your father is getting older and your mother cannot help him in the fields without straining her already weak back. Your sister is too young for such a demanding job, as well.
These worries translate into your nightmares.
The subconscious is a wicked thing indeed; one moment a friend, the next an adversary. Every night you don't spend with Bela you suffer from dreams. You see your hometown decayed, your father's fields barren. You see your mother weeping and your sister too famished to get out of bed—
Until the images grow blurry and distant, your sleep-riddled senses focusing on something else, instead, steady and cool, leaning over your back.
“Rhiannon...” you hear her voice call by your ear, uncertain if it's true or another fabrication of your mind.
Soft, cold fingers trail down your arm.
“Rhiannon~”
You slowly blink your eyes open to the sight of your dark room. It's not dawn yet, but the body at your back is unmistakable. So is the kiss pressed to the soft spot underneath your ear.
You give a quiet hum and turn around, facing the most beautiful view one could hope to wake up to.
“Don't be mad I woke you up this early.” she says. “Just wanted to see you.”
“I can't ever be mad when you wake me up like this.” Admittedly, you did scream the first time flies slipped into your room from the openings of the door, but it's a normal occurrence for you now.
Bela smiles, yet her expression quickly morphs to concern. Her thumb raises to your cheek, just under your eye.
“Were you... crying?” she asks.
Oh. It must have been during your dream. You don't feel tears in your eyes, but her enhanced sight must make out the dried streaks.
“I didn't realize. Must have been during my nightmare.” You wipe at your eyelids for good measure.
“If you want to talk about it...” Bela trails off.
God, when did Miss Superior Species become such a good girlf— nonono. Not that word. That's the forbidden word.
You disentangle your free arm from the covers to wrap it around her neck. She takes the cue to hold you a little tighter. You really don't want to burden her with your problems, or to cry and be a mess in front of her, but thinking about that nightmare makes something in your chest crack.
“I keep seeing my family and they're not in a good state. Don't want to talk about this more, if that's alright with you.” you confess in a whisper. “Tell me something random.”
“Well... my mother is leaving the castle for a few days.” Bela huffs by your ear. “And in itself that's not terrible... or it wouldn't be, if Cassandra and Daniela weren't my sisters.”
You chuckle at that. “Oh, no.”
“That's about right.” Bela grimaces. “...do you want to bet on how much Lei in property damage we'll be looking at by the time she returns?”
“I don't think it's right for me to bet on the Ladies of the castle...” you say.
“If it makes you feel better, these 'Ladies' bet on whether we'd sleep together or not.”
“...How does ten thousand sound?”
-
-
On second thought... ten thousand may be too hopeful, considering Cassandra and Daniela are this lively before the Lady has even left the castle grounds.
At the time of the Countess' departure, you hear her address her daughters from the side-room you're cleaning, just by the main hall. Alcina leaves the estate in Bela's hands and tells the other two to not give her trouble, which... is doubtful.
“Yes, mother.” You hear them say in unison. Whether you believe it is another matter.
“Alexia. Nobody other than you and the Grand Chambermaid is to enter my room while I'm gone. Understood?”
“Yes ma'am.” Comes your coworker's reply.
“Protect the castle until my return.”
“... how am I supposed to do that?”
“From Cassandra.”
“Mother!” The brunette protests.
“... I'll try.”
The ancient, heavy door opens and closes... and soothing silence settles in for a while. A very small while.
It doesn't last longer than five precious minutes, until—
“Whoo~ home alone. Hey Cassandra, wanna swordfight at the battlements?” You don't have to see Bela's mortified expression to picture it materializing right there, at Daniela's suggestion.
“I thought you'd never ask!” Cassandra replies excitedly. The telltale buzzing of flies echoes across the main hall before it fades out.
“This is going to be hell, isn't it.” Alexia asks, deadpan.
“You have no idea...”
All you can think about is: poor Bela...
-
-
You thought your lover would be stuck on damage control duty until the moment her mother returns, but you are pleasantly surprised when the castle gradually quiets down.
Of course, the peace and serenity are mostly attributed to the new romance books Duke has brought over for Daniela, combined with whatever magic Alexia has summoned forth to keep Cassandra from terrorizing the staff.
You silently thank them both for the fact Bela has more time to come to you now and doesn't even try to be subtle about it, without her mother around.
You are not surprised, anymore, when black-clad arms wrap around your waist as you work. A smile makes it way to your lips, slow as a sunrise.
“Hello, vampire.”
“Ugh, I'm starting to think you like the thought of that...” comes the faux-sour reply.
“I will neither confirm nor deny.” You raise your hands up. “It's past dawn. You aren't tired?”
“I am.” Bela says, turning you around so you're facing her. “But there's something I want to show you, first.”
You are taken by the hand and led up stairways and past unfamiliar doors, to parts of the castle you've never seen before. Someone cleans them for sure because they're free of cobwebs and dust, but they still look old, mostly stone and suits of armor as decorations, as opposed to the luxury of the lower floors.
Bela slides a key in a metallic door, pushes it open... and fresh, cool air kisses your cheeks. You hadn't realized she was taking you to the very top of the castle.
Your body moves forward as if having a will of its own, boots sinking softly into the layer of snow gathered on the ground. As you approach the massive battlements, the sight revealed to you is straight out of a fairy-tale; the sun is shyly peeking through the clouds, its first light so very soft as it lovingly falls upon the peerless forest below you.
“Wow.” you breathe.
The atmosphere is so clear. It feels so freeing to be outside again. You underestimated how much you've missed it.
Bela pulls her hood up and comes to stand next to you, her pale complexion a perfect match to your snowy surroundings. If her skintone is a tad more grey than usual... you assume it's your eyes playing tricks on you.
The blonde gives you a smirk. “Will you leave yourself in my care for a bit?” she asks, extending you her palm, face-up.
The thought is somehow both exciting and a tad intimidating, but you've already left your body in her complete control several times. You trust her with it, so you give her your hand.
The next thing you know is that you are lifted into her arms and your stomach is dropping for reasons other than how swoon-worthy that is. Bela leaps into the crenel in front of you as if gravity isn't a thing that applies to her majesty. Then she does the same again, landing atop the merlons.
“Oh my God!” you gasp as she does it, feeling her deep laugh reverberate through you.
“Relax, relax, you're fine.” she chuckles again, setting you down and holy shit is it high. You get a sense of vertigo the second your gaze strays down.
Then again... the adrenaline is such a rush. It feels amazing. You feel so alive.
Bela wraps her arms around your waist like a safety rope, her chin coming to rest on your shoulder.
“If this is too much I can take you back down.”
“No, no! This is perfect.” you say. You're literally at the top of the world.
“No human other than you and Alexia has ever stepped here.” Bela states.
“Cassandra took Alexia to this romantic setting?” You can't help but widen your eyes at her. They're very close together, yes, but romance doesn't seem to be their thing.
“Well. It wasn't so romantic when they jumped down.” Bela says. “Then again, she did ask Cassandra what it's like to fly...”
You cannot picture anybody willingly jumping from this ungodly height, but then again Alexia is already doing the impossible, dating Cassandra and still drawing breath. That's one adrenaline shot you do not think you want to take. Ever.
“I don't want to know what that's like, Bela!” you say quickly, just in case she's thinking about it.
Another deep laugh comes from your lover.
The two of you take a few quiet moments to admire the view.
“You see that structure over there? That's the factory and territory of House Heisenberg.” Bela points far to the distance. “Moreau's reservoir is that way. And past this bridge are the falls and Lady Beneviento's mansion.” You cannot see much past said bridge, obscured by thick mist as it is.
“Wait. The village... looks different.” you observe. Now that your eyes have adjusted, you realize it's not the torn-apart place you came to trade seeds to, when you were captured.
“Mother Miranda doesn't intend to leave it in pieces. The villagers had to be taught a harsh lesson, but those who remained loyal to her are given new homes. She has a vision for its progress, from what mother says. It will be grander and richer than before, filled with people who are deeply faithful and useful to her.”
Well that... sounds like the most unfair thing you've ever heard, but you can't go and voice your opinion on the subject. You know the village revered her as a prophetess, but now to intervene in such a way, as if she's a god?
Where does it end?
You sure are glad your family doesn't live here.
“My mother is over... there, right now.” Bela tells you, turning your chin far to the left. There are pillars extending upwards in the distance, in a structure –a temple of sorts?— smaller than the castle but imposing on its own right.
A cold gust of air then rushes past you. Bela tenses at your back, as if in pain.
“Sorry to have to cut this short, Rhiannon. But I need to head inside.” she speaks a tad faster than normal.
When the two of you are once again within the warmer walls of the castle, you notice Bela's movements are considerably stiffer, a stark contrast to her usual effortless grace.
When she gives you a kiss goodmorning, her lips are cold as ice.
-
-
Inside, you walk past Cassandra's room as quietly as humanly possible. Still, your body clamps down on you the moment her door opens behind you.
“Oh. Rhiannon.”
Alexia's shirt is missing a few top buttons and her collarbone is sporting parallel scratches, as if from nails. You know it's not proper to comment on it, but you just can't stop yourself from saying:
The breath you were holding leaves you softly at the sound of Alexia's voice.
“What's up?” you greet in a whisper, not wanting to provoke the wolf sleeping close.
“What wild cat did you wrestle to come out like this?” you giggle as she grimaces, falling into step beside you.
“You know what cat I wrestled.”
Yeah, you just don't know how she's still alive. You've heard of the things Cassandra has done, you've personally heard the screams she caused in the dungeons. Contrary to her sexy, sensual appearance, the woman is a devil. Alexia is definitely not. How did these two ever make it this far?
“Look, I need a favor.” she says. “This is the key to Alcina's room. I have to go clean because she'll be back tonight but I really can't move at the moment. You're the only one I trust to go in my stead, so... will you do it?”
“Of course, no problem.” you easily say, then catch the little glint in her eye.
“The only working phone in the castle is there, by the way. I'd give you my smartphone, but. No signal. Make sure to be out quick though. And the key has to return to me.”
... Oh... my.
-
-
When you enter the lavish room, it is with trembling legs. The Countess’ perfume somehow still lingers about the space, nearly making you run right out. Yet you remain, taking in all the royal golds and leathery whites that surround you. Pristine. That’s the first word that comes to mind.
The bed is big enough to get lost in, but it’s not what captures your interest. Instead, your eye lingers directly opposite the luxurious mattress, at the vanity atop which lies an old landline telephone.
Your fingers are unsteady when they move to take it. You ponder several times if it’s better that you don’t call at all. If your family is better off thinking you left them behind. In the end, though, emotions win.
You expect your mother to answer. It will be way more difficult if your father does and you’re not sure you can handle everything he’ll throw your way right now. But when you hear the first, tentative ‘hello?’ on the other end, you nearly drop to your knees.
“…Anna, it’s me.” you fight to keep your voice steady.
“Rhiannon?” A gasp. “I-is it really you?”
“Of course.” Your eyes are already brimming with tears. “I missed you. I missed you so much. All of you.” Don’t break. Don’t. Don’t.
“Then why… why did you leave?” Well. Rivers are streaming down your cheeks now.
You tell her that you had to. That this is the best you can do for them, whether they believe you or not. You tell her that maybe she will understand when she’s older and you promise to explain your situation better if you can, then. At the end, you make one last selfish request; that she keeps this conversation to herself and not say a word about you to your parents.
When you hang up, the silence is deafening.
You gathered from the things she said that they’re not doing well without you. Not emotionally, not financially. You need to do something, you need to help them.
A dark thought occurs to you, then. Your gaze lands on the giant, ornate box containing the Lady’s jewelry, each piece in there easily costing a small fortune. A single ring, a single earring, is all it would take. You can plead with Duke to deliver it to your hometown. You know it’s on his way.
But.
Can you really do that to Bela? Can you steal from her mother, who she adores, who she would set fire to the world for, when she’s been literally a sweetheart to you, against her own nature? And can you betray Alexia’s trust, who has been at your side in her own, subtle way since the beginning?
Can you be a traitor, a thief and a liar for your family?
Well. The answer is yes, you can.
But you are not going to. Because you are not alone anymore, not like you were when you first stepped into the castle. If you need help, you’ll ask for help without resorting to hurting anyone who ever meant something to you here. Duke will assist you. Alexia is a shoulder to lean on for you.
And you trust Bela with what you love, the same way you trust her with your heart.
-
-
In the small hours of the night, in Alcina’s bedroom…
“I am amazed the castle is in such great condition, daughters. Well done.” their mother says proudly. She can hardly believe the only damage done is a single vase. The girls are maturing, indeed.
“Of course, mother.” they reply.
“Did we have any casualties from the staff?” the Lady asks, sipping from her wine glass. “…Daniela?”
“Wh— why do say my name?” the redhead protests, while the other two snicker. “I’ve been the best behaved of all, you know? And these two left me all alone, too, because Cassandra was allll over Alexia like always but now Bela is all over Rhiannon too and it’s just—”
“Daniela.” Bela growls, low in her throat. Cassandra facepalms. The youngest sister only then realizes the sensitive information she just blurted out.
“Daniela. Cassandra. You may go.” Alcina speaks, focusing her greyish yellow eyes on her eldest.
The door opens and closes, leaving them alone in the grand chamber. Bela is meeting her eyes, at least, unlike her sisters when they mess up. She has a strong poker face, one that makes Alcina proud to witness, but a mother can always recognize when anxiety and tension are present in her daughters.
“Bela. Is there something you wish to tell me?” she inquires, calm and slow, yet always authoritative.
“Not really.”
“What is this I hear about being all over a maid? Cassandra I understand, but Alexia is not just any human. And if it’s up to me, she will not be human for very much longer.” Alcina says. “She is good for your sister. But none of the others are good enough for you.”
Bela shifts. Her jaw clenches hard before relaxing. “Mother, I…” her gaze flits down, then back up. “…was just curious. Cassandra said all those things about sex and I wanted to see it for myself.” she shrugs. “That’s all.”
“That is all?” Alcina narrows her eyes. She knows her eldest cannot lie to her with a straight face.
Bela meets her head-on. “Do you want me to drag her down to the wine cellar right now to prove it?”
Her most responsible daughter never gave her any reason to doubt her word thus far. Alcina doesn’t like the idea of any human touching Bela, but… she was bound to have intercourse at some point. May as well have that over with. Plus, they were all so frustrated from staying locked up in the castle for over a month. Wanting an outlet is normal.
“No, my daughter. That won’t be necessary. You are allowed to have a toy, so long as you do not get attached to it.” she is sure Bela will recognize the subtle warning in her tone.
Alcina was not careful with Cassandra, until it was too late. Until her heart belonged to Alexia and she could not harm her without ripping it, as well. She will not repeat that mistake. Which is why she makes a mental note to keep a close eye on this Rhiannon girl. And on the first chance…
Remove her from the equation.

Worst Enemy (Charlie Gillespie x Reader)
Tumblr media
A/n: Sorry this took so long! I just wasn't sure how I wanted to go about this request since I haven’t read that much smut lately to be fully inspired. I read a lot of 5 seconds of summer smut to say the least. Calum Hood smut to be exact and my fingers couldn’t stop typing after that.😂 But I hope you guys like it! Please let me know if you do! Don't read it if you just want a normal imagine. Some normal ones coming soon. Also I have an upcoming announcement after I hit 150 followers!
Requested by: irwindshield (Wattpad)
Warnings: Super Smutty (18+)
————
"And action!" Kenny shouted.
I scowled at the boy in front of me who looked just as mad as I was.
"Seriously Luke your gonna tell me that you and Julie don't have anything going on"
"Y/c/n I already told you we don't! Isn't that enough?!" Charlie spoke standing up from his seat on the couch.
"No it's not. Not when you spent all weekend writing love songs together"
"It was one song and it wasn't about each other"
"One song still means something"
"Why does it even matter to you I'm single now? Isn't that what you wanted? To be free well now you're free to be with whoever you want or did you forget what happened with Reggie?"
"Nothing happened with Reggie. We were joking around. It's not my fault your jealous!" I shouted in frustration.
"Look who's talking" He said getting up in my face. Both our chests heaving in anger as we stared at each other angrily.
"You know what Patterson even when we're both dead I still regret ever falling in love with you all those years ago" I spoke through gritted teeth. I turned around dramatically to walk away, only to have Charlie grab me by the wrist and spin me around. Our faces now inches apart.
In aggravation he crash his lips onto mine shoving his tongue into my mouth. I huffed wrapping my arms around his neck to pull him closer. We both fought for dominance as his hands found their way around my waist lifting me up in the air.
I got so caught up in the heated make out session I almost didn't hear Kenny yell for the end of the scene.
"Cut!" He shouted Charlie immediately letting me go. I scoffed pushing myself away from him to see his hair disheveled, his lips plump, and smeared with my red lipstick. I'd be lying if I didn't admit I wanted to finish what we started now. But I couldn't do that when the insanely hot actor I wanted to push me up against the wall also happened to be my worst enemy.
"That was great guys!" Kenny said walking towards us.
"We might reshoot tomorrow if we have time since this is a kids show and that was a little too not kid friendly. Maybe hold back on the tongue"
"You got it Kenny"
"It's already late enough thank you two for staying back tonight we really had to get this in. Have a good night!"
"It was no problem. See you tomorrow" I smiled at our director as he walked away. I turned back to the boy beside me glaring at him.
"Well that was shitty. He's right you use way too much tongue. It was like Niagara Falls" I spoke using hand gestures. I watched the brunette roll his eyes in annoyance making me grin. Turning back around I began to walk back towards my trailer deciding to just turn in my costume tomorrow. Like I had done so many times after shooting until the am.
"You know I've had plenty of people who think my kissing is amazing" Charlie spoke walking a few feet away from me seeing as his trailer was right beside mine. Unfortunate perks of playing love interest who broke up in the show.
"I hate to break it to you Charles but they lied"
"Shut up. I'm done with your shit for the day"
"You know if there's one thing I hate more than having to shoot a scene so late it's having to shoot it with you Gillespie"
"Yeah well it's no fun for me either. I mean having to make out with a fucking jerk and act like I'm in love with her. Isn't exactly the highlight of my year!" He whispered shouted making sure no one heard us. It was late and the very few people who stayed in their trailers were probably dead asleep due to how long filming went on today.
"Not for me either! Why do you hate me so much? I swear I tried to be fucking nice to you when we met"
"Please you were anything but nice" He argued making me facepalm.
"You fucking liar! I introduced myself. I stuck my hand out for you to shake and you completely denied it. If anything you're the prick and the asshole!" I shouted reaching the outskirts of my trailer.
Suddenly I felt my body collide with the cold vehicle behind me and a cold hand landing on my mouth. My eyes widened looking up at the man in front of me who's chest was heaving.
"You wanna say that to my face y/l/n" He spoke through gritted teeth.
"Look we both promised that we'd keep this little feud between us a secret for the sake of the show and our cast mates. So if you don't shut that big mouth of yours we might just get caught" He whispered making me roll my eyes.
Finally coming back to my senses I removed his hand from my mouth, looking him straight in the eyes.
"You fucking prick" I repeated myself seeing what he would say next. But he didn't say anything. Not a word.
I watched his face closely as his eyes flickered to my lips. He slowly leaned forward hesitant on his actions. Rolling my eyes I took initiative, smashing my lips onto his. I let out a breath as he lifted my leg up to pull me closer. Nearly letting a moan escape as I felt his hard on press against the front of my jeans.
"Can't even fucking make the first move. How fucking dry your sex life must be" I panted teasingly as we pulled away.
"Shut the fuck up" He whispered pressing his lips to mine once more with such a force. I immediately kissed back realization hitting me. We were in the middle of a parking lot filled with trailers.
I pushed him away taking his hand leading him to my trailer that wasn't too far. He complied following closely behind. Pressing his body into mine as I unlocked the door as quick as possible. I stepped into the trailer switching on the dim light. I bit my lip turning around to finally face Charlie who stood there with his beautiful blue eyes darkened with lust.
"Are we really gonna do this?" I asked leaning on the counter in the small kitchen area.
"I don't know. I-I mean we don't have to if you don't want to. We could just leave it here if that's w-what you want"
"Well what do you want?" I asked raising an eyebrow. I watched as his body shifted uncomfortably as I removed the jean jacket on my body leaving me in a silky satin cami.
"I really wanna fuck you" He responded biting his lip. My stomach filling with butterflies getting the response I was hoping for.
"Then do it" I stated watching as he made his way towards me. Crashing his lips onto mine. I let out a huff as he lifted me off the ground and pushed me onto the counter roughly. My back hitting the wood behind me forcefully.
"Seriously?" I panted pulled away from the kiss first.
"Sorry" He muttered sheepishly before diving into my neck. Finding a spot to suck on. I craned my neck allowing him more access not even caring that I'd have to deal with the makeup team tomorrow.
Before giving it a second thought I pulled off my top tossing it across the room leaving me in a teal Lacey bra. The same color of the cami I was wearing.
"Holy fuck" Charlie whispered most blankly admiring the view. I let out a giggle tugging at his shirt as well signaling I wanted it off. He quickly got the message.
It was my turn to drool seeing his tightly toned abs turning me on even more than I already was. I was knocked out of my trance by Charlie kissing me passionately once more. My eyes fluttering shut, pulling the hairs on his neck. Our tongues now fighting for dominance.
His hands moved away from my waist to my back. Unhooking my bra from my body. We shifted slightly, the material being flung across the room. Within seconds his hands roamed my body freely once more. A groan escaping my mouth as his lips moved down my neck.
Until eventually settling on my nipple. My core was now throbbing in anticipation of his next moves.
I bit my lip trying to keep quiet but at the rate his hands were moving it was nearly impossible. I watched as he moved down my body. Undoing my jeans quickly.
I whimpered as Charlie spread my legs apart. Toying with the thin fabric of the panties I was wearing. Feeling myself getting wetter by the second I grasped onto his hair. "Fuck Charlie please" I whined as he began to place kisses up my thighs. Each one a little longer than the last.
"Please what?"
"Don't make me fucking ask again Gillespie. I don't beg" I spoke pulling him harder from his hair. Forcing him to look up at me.
He growled at my actions ripping apart the fabric and tossing it off to the side.
My back arched feeling his slender fingers enter me. A loud moan escaping my lips as he skillfully pumped his fingers in and out of my entrance.
I bit my lip tightly opening my legs wider to give him better access. Only to feel the feeling of pleasure leave my body.
"What the fu-" My words were cut off by Charlie grabbing me by the thighs. Pulling me closer to the edge of the counter.
"Holy shit" I moaned as he dipped his head between my legs to attach himself to my now sensitive cunt. Sucking on it harshly with no hesitation. His tongue moved around so effortlessly. I threw my head back as my fingers entangled into his hair wanting to feel him now more than ever.
"So fucking good" He groaned pulling away to add two fingers. Doubling the satisfaction. My lips parting to slightly as my eyes screwed shut.
"Charlie I'm s-so close" I muttered feeling his fingers spread up. Within seconds he sent me over the edge. Pleasure coursing through my body. I panted loudly attempting to steady my breathing. Watching as Charlie stood up. Lifting his glistening fingers up to his lips sucking off every last drop of cum that coated them. I let out another moan at the sight feeing myself getting turned on again.
"You okay?" He asked raising an eyebrow at me. I giggled seeing his already plump lips swollen.
"Perfectly fine Charles" I spoke wiping off my juices running down his chin with a towel nearby.
"A thousand times better now actually"
"I'm glad to hear you say that baby. Cause I'm not done with you" He whispered holding me firmly by the waist.
"Oh really?" I asked raising an eyebrow at the boy.
"Well unless you wanna wait until tomorrow after our first date"
"First date? Are you asking me out?"
"So what if I am? You got a problem with it y/l/n?"
"Nope. No problem here. Well except for the fact that I'm all dirty and sweaty" I said running my fingers through his messy hair.
"Well that just won't do for my princess will it? Round 2 in the shower?" He questioned making me laugh.
"If you think you can make me cum again then yes" I laughed pulling him into a passionate kiss.
"Oh I know I can" He mumbled into my lips before lifting me off the counter. I giggled as he walked to the bathroom in the back of the trailer. The small confined space making me realize just how hot he actually was. It was. I balanced myself as he put me down to turn on the water. I began to set it at a warm temperature, Listening as Charlie stripped himself of the rest of his clothes from behind me.
"Your so beautiful" Charlie whispered wrapping his arms around my waist from behind.
"Mmm you weren't saying that last week"
"I wasn't saying it but I was thinking it" He spoke as I felt something poking me from behind.
"You think about me?" I asked turning around to face him.
"A lot" He responded as I walked backwards. The warm water hitting me from above for a split second before my back hit the cold wall.
"Good" I responded as he pinned me up against the wall.
I huffed as his large hands grabbed me from behind my thighs. Wrapping my legs around his waist. Our make out session getting more heated by the second. Pulling him closer wanting nothing more than to feel him inside of me.
He was quick to line himself up to my entrance. Entering me slowly.
"C-can I move?" He asked after a moment. I nodded thankful he let me adjust to his size.
Within seconds we both were a wreck as he pounded into me. A string of curse words leaving our lips as the warm water fell over us.
I moaned as he hit my g-spot. My legs becoming weaker the faster he moved. I felt familiar knot forming at the pit of my stomach as he let out a noise of disgruntlement.
"Fuck baby I'm almost there"
I nodded along. Not daring to attempt to form any words. Both of us reaching our climax one after the other.
"We should do this again sometime. You know after our date" He grinned placing me down gently.
"I agree" I spoke moving under the water. I sighed contently as his arms wrapped around me from behind. His lips grazing my skin as he place chaste kisses upon it. A small smile forming on my face.
As much as this was the end of our little feud it also a new beginning to a new relationship.

7 COMFORT MOVIES
tagged by the very lovely @creativefiend19, thank you, dude!
1. True Romance, Tony Scott, 1993. My ultimate go-to movie. I first saw this at age 17, shown to me by my neighbour and friend who couldn't believe I'd not seen it, knowing the kind of films I liked. I was only 13 when it came out at the cinema so wasn't quite old enough to pass for an adult! Fast forward A LOT of years, I managed to catch a special Valentine's screening... Freshly single from an 8 year relationship, I sat in the middle of all he loved-up couples and didn't give a fuck bc I got to see Clarence and Alabama absolutely killing it on the big screen, having to refrain from muttering the script I knew so well by that point!
Tumblr media
2. Lars & The Real Girl, 2007, Craig Gillespie. I love this film so, so much. If you were to explain the premise to somebody, it would sound like a very different flick to that which it actually is. On the surface, it's about a guy who buys a sex doll and believes (and tries to convince everyone else) that she's his girlfriend and that they're in love... It's actually a tale about loss and grief and learning and growing and how having empathy in the face of things you don't understand can be the most wonderful thing. Ryan Gosling is a treasure and his performance is nothing shy of Beautiful™.
Tumblr media
3. Call Me By Your Name, 2017, Luca Guadagnino. Ahhhh, Elio and Oliver. This film is so nostalgic, so lovely, so heartbreakingly beautiful. It's so many things. It's coming of age; it's first love; it's forbidden love; it's learning about life in all it's terrible and wonderful variations and it fills me with all the feels every time I watch it.
Tumblr media
4. Before Sunrise, 1995, Richard Linklater. I was 15 when I saw this movie and I'd never seen a piece like it. Two strangers meet on a train in Europe and end up hopping off together in Vienna, proceeding to wander the streets for the night, just talking and taking in the city's nooks and crannies and, ultimately, each other. It opened my eyes to how spontaneity can change everything and nothing and how the human condition is both wonderful and tragic—and I fell completing in love with both Julie Delphy and Ethan Hawke in the process.
Tumblr media
5. The Shawshank Redemption, 1994, Frank Darabont. I'd moved out of home at 16 and went back on Friday night's to have dinner and catch up with my Mum and younger brother. We'd eat, then walk round to the video store to rent a movie for the evening. This one time, there was a new manager. He saw us struggling to choose and offered us a deal: take home the movie he chose for us for free and, if we didn't enjoy it, we didn't have to pay for it on return. It was The Shawshank Redemption—a movie about a guy who gets imprisoned with a life sentence—and I was more than happy to pay the rental price when I brought it back to the store the next day. In essence, this film is about not letting hope be taken from you, however bleak life may get. It has Morgan Freeman. It has Tim Robbins in (arguably) his best role. It has a wonderful score. It has me crying tears of sadness and joy on every viewing and is, imho, one of the most sublime yet hard-hitting pieces of commercial film out there.
Tumblr media
6. Breakfast On Pluto, 2005, Neil Jordan. I adore everything about this film. It's about flinging gender norms out of a car window that's moving at 100mph. It's the same amount of real as it is whimsical. Cillian Murphy is absolutely wonderful, as is Ruth Negger and the supporting cast. If you've not seen it, just watch it. You will not be disappointed.
Tumblr media
7. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, 1989, Stephen Herek. A couple of hair!metal-loving dudes who travel in time inside a phone box to collect important historical figures from the past for their high-school history project. Do I really need to say any more? Nope.

most powerful women in movies/tv shows (in my opinion)
not gonna lie i either wanna be them or i wanna be with them
i talk a lot about movies characters (especially mcu.) than tv show characters but i have so many more poweful female characters in my sleeve that i can do a part 2 if you'd like!
also please leave me your opinion in the comments i'd love to know your view on these or even different characters
pictures are not mine - found them on pinterest
WARNING: MAY INCLUDE SPOILERS!!!!
1. Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games series)
Tumblr media
let's not lie, if it wasn't for this queen right here, our generation wouldn't be so brave and bold. words cannot express how much power she holds. 13 year old me wanted to be her and nothing more, and let's be honest 5 years later i still wanna be katniss.
2. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series)
Tumblr media
gotta be honest for years i despited her. she seemed annoying and i just didn't like her in general. but as years went by i realized that hermione is actually an amazing character. her most powerful moment was definitely punching draco malfoy in the face (let's be honest). but at the end of the day she taught us how to be badass with books and wisdom not only punching or shooting arrows
3. Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter series)
Tumblr media
she thought us how to be ourselves no matter what others say. whenever i feel embarrassed with the things i love or the way i just am i just remember that luna lovegood would not only love me but she'd be my no.1 fan.
4. Peggy Carter (MCU)
Tumblr media
underrated QUEEN. if you still haven't seen the show Agent Carter shame on you. she is practically behind everything that happened in mcu (except all the galaxy stuff obviously). she's behind avengers because without shield, avengers would never happen. why? because peggy carter is the founder of the shield. also don't even get me started on how dirty endgame did her. she really poured last bits of steve's blood into river and she moved on, but why not erease that whole moving on thing and get her back with steve who apparently cannot be with anybody else than peggy (i believe if there was a much better writing we'd see how beautifly would steve move on, but that's for the next time)
5. Nebula (MCU)
Tumblr media
another underrated queen 'cause y'all SLEEPING on her. if it wasn't for her dear tony wouldn't have survived in space more than 5 days. even if it was hard for her she was able to disobey thanos and go with her sister and become a good person. you could see that magneficent character development in endgame where she did not only kill her 2014 self to protect people that were there with her but she also worked with avengers which she'd never do back in the gotg days.
6. Okoye (MCU)
Tumblr media
once again ANOTHER underrated queen. i haven't seen a lot of people talk about her which is a huge shame. she's not only badass but she was able to stand up to the love of her life to protect her king and her nation and that proved us that she does not need no man. and when she laughs oh my god so gorgeous!
7. Hela (MCU - Thor Ragnarok)
Tumblr media
the POWER (that's literally all i have to say).
8. Fish Mooney (Gotham)
Tumblr media
the rightful queen of gotham. all i can say is that if she was in game of thrones the night king would be dead by the season 2.
9. Margaery Tyrell (Game of Thrones)
Tumblr media
if she was there in season 8 when they were deciding on the next ruler of the six kingsoms she'd be very hot candidate. they'd never have more loving and rightful queen like margaery. absolute queen.
10. Rowena MacLeod (Supernatural)
Tumblr media
!!!!!MAY INCLUDE SPOILERS!!!!!!
(i'm still catching up on s15 and i've heard some things, i don't know if they're true or not but there's nothing mentioning that here)
absolute legend i'd have to say. she made me love scottish accent. but other than that she practically owned every single episode she's ever been in. she also made supernatural even more watchable. (also ruth is a total sweetheart and i absolutely love her!)

The Book of You & I- Rafe Cameron
Tumblr media
Summary: Based on The Book of You & I by Alec Benjamin
The Book of You & I- Rafe Cameron x fem reader
Summary: Based on
Word count: 2,900
Warnings: Angst, brief nudity mentioned, is kissing a warning?? all together sadness
Disclaimer: The female pronouns have been changed to male since this will be from a girls pov
Flashback in italics
Well, it all began in the back of his car
I was just sixteen, but I fell so hard
You and Rafe Cameron sat in the trunk of his jeep. Rafe had asked you on a date a few days before this, quickly realizing he was falling for you hard and fast.
He drove you two up to the look-out hill, which gave you a beautiful view of the Outer Banks. He decorated the trunk with pillows and small fairy lights, playing music in the background. You were resting your head on his chest, feeling at peace as you listened to his calm heart beat.
It was when he kissed your forehead did you realize you were falling for him just as hard. Every moment you spent with him then you fell harder and harder. He never failed to make you smile and feel loved when you needed it most which you greatly appreciated.
Well, the years went by and he held my heart, but his love ran dry and we fell apart
You and Rafe had been dating for 3 years now. 3 years of going on dates, surprising each other with gifts, going to parties together, mind blowing sex, spending nights together. You thought everything was going beautifully.
However, as time went by everytime you tried to hang out with your boyfriend, he said he was always busy, coming up with excuses on why he couldn't go out when in reality he was partying with his friends and snorting coke.
I felt him growing distant, I knew his love was shifting
"Why are you constantly up my ass what the fuck is that about lately?!" Rafe screamed in your face. You two were in the middle of an argument after you asked him why he hasn't been around lately. He snapped at you as soon as you asked.
"Why are you yelling at me?" You raised your voice back, genuinely confused as to why he was acting so hostile towards you. "Because I'm not happy in our relationship anymore!" He screamed, red in the face. Your mouth fell open at his confession, a strong tension filling the room. Your eyes stung with tears, furrowing your eyebrows at him.
"What?" Your voice was barely audible as he kept his stare at the floor, rubbing his hands through his hair.
"I'm not happy anymore. I just- I don't know I'm not… in love with you anymore." A sob escaped your lips as you took in his words. You didn't say anything else to him as you walked out of his bedroom, slamming his door shut. You attempted to collect yourself at least until you were back in your car.
Accidentally bumping into Sarah, your head hung low as you apologized. "Y/N, you okay?" Your eyes met Sarah who softly gasped at your red eyes. Quickly shaking your head, you left the Cameron household, and entered your car. Your fingers gripped your steering wheel until your knuckles turned white.
You inhaled sharply, wiping the tears out of your eyes you sped out of the driveway, your grip never ending up on the wheel.
And all that I could say was, don't tell me that it's over, the book of you and I. Now you've scribbled out my name and you've erased my favorite lines
You cried into your pillows for days on end, avoiding your friends calls and texts, not going to the dinner table to eat with your family, not leaving your bed in general. You sent countless nights, playing back memories in your head of the two of you. You questioned yourself so many times, wondering what you did wrong that made him fall out of love with you.
For the first time in a week you checked your social media. Your thumb hovered over Rafe's instagram account. Before you could stop yourself you scrolled through his posts, your grip tightening on your phone you saw all of his posts with you were deleted. Biting your tongue, you didn't hesitate to archive the pictures of you two on your account. Throwing your phone on the end of the bed, you sniffled before clutching onto your pillow.
There were so many chapters that we never got to write, like cereal for dinner and staying up all night.
For your 1 year anniversary, Rafe had bought you tickets to see your favorite band, getting you front row seats. You were forever grateful that Rafe had done that for you, even when you told him he didn't have to do anything so big.
You and Rafe stood side by side, his arm around your shoulder, your hand resting on his chest. Chills were sent down your spine as the crowd screamed and cheered as the band appeared on stage. Rafe shifted you so you were in front of him, your back against his chest.
You shut your eyes in happiness, listening to the crowd sing along to the lyrics. Letting the feeling of euphoria take over your body, you rested your head on his shoulder, holding his hands in place on your waist.
The concert lasted almost 2 hours, making it 3 a.m. when you two returned back to his house. As soon as the both entered your house, Rafe threw himself on your couch, his body exhausted from all the adrenaline. You giggled at your boyfriend, entering the kitchen to make bowls of cereal. Pouring Fruit loops into two bowls, you added the milk and grabbed two spoons.
Plopping yourself next to Rafe's head, you shook the cereal box, his head snapping up to look at which one you grabbed. A dorky grin appeared on his face, sitting up and tucking his legs underneath. "You know what to do." You handed him the remote. He shoved a spoonful of cereal into his mouth before turning the TV onto Spongebob.
I remember where we started, I remember how you looked
Before Rafe asked you on your first date, he asked you to senior prom. He knew you were a sucker for surprises so he gathered his friends to help lead you to the outside bus dock. There Rafe stood with a glass jar in his hands. You walked up to him and read the sign, 'be a smartie and take this dum dum to prom!' In the glass vase was the smarties candies on the bottom, and dum dumb lollipops on top.
Not being able to hold back your smile, you happily said yes to him, earning cheers and whoops from everyone around you.
Once prom actually came around, you never forgot what he looked like. He showed up at your door in a light blue tux, a corsage the color of your dress in his hands. You could easily tell he was nervous, but as soon as he saw you all of his nerves left. "You look… stunning." He exhaled, truly at a loss for words.
"Thank you! You clean up well." You joked, your hand skimming across the hems of his tux. His hand delicately cupped the side of your waist. "You truly do look like a princess."
But now I'm missing bits and pieces from the pages that you took. You didn't give a reason, I'll forever wonder why, we never got to finish the book of you and I.
You snuggled into your blankets, letting out a loud sigh. A soft knock echoed from the outside of your door. "Go away mom." You called out, only to hear another knock and the door opening. You flipped around to see Sarah Cameron standing at the foot of your bed with a box of pizza and plate of cookies.
After you thought you were out of tears, more tears swelled in your eyes at the sight of her. She joined next to you in your bed, holding you in her arms as you sobbed into her chest. Resting her chin on the top of your head, Sarah held you, her heartbreaking to hear your distressed sobs. "Shhh. It's okay, I got you." She mumbled.
"He never told me why," you started as you pulled away from her, wiping your tears on your blankets. "I don't know what I did wrong." You mumbled, picking at your fingernails. "Y/N, you did nothing wrong. Rafe is just an asshole, and I am so, so sorry for everything he's put you through recently."
Sarah slid the box of pizza towards you, a small smile on your face you took a slice and nibbled on the end. "Before I hug you more, I need you to take a shower." Sarah admitted before grabbing a slice for herself. You immediately dropped the pizza, apologizing before running into the bathroom.
Well, I bought a pen and I turned the page. Then I wrote about how I wish you'd stayed. I said all the things that I never got to say. Maybe when it's done, I will feel okay.
You sat at your desk, you thumb anxiously clicking the top of the pen. Your mom had bought you a journal to write down everything that you had going on in your mind. She said it would help you at least organize some thoughts instead of having them jumbled together in your head.
You sighed loudly before writing a letter that you knew you'd never send.
Dear Rafe,
God, I never thought I'd be writing this letter. I never thought we would break up. I never expected you to fall out of love with me. Everything just feels… out of place. You were my safe zone, out of everything that was changing in my life you constantly stayed by my side through everything and  I loved that about you. I wish you were still with me. I don't know why after everything you've done to me recently, but I miss your touch. I miss the smell of your cologne. I miss your cute nicknames for me. I miss watching Disney movies with you. I miss staying up with you. I miss all of you. I never told you this, but I always pictured us getting married. I pictured you proposing to me after like our 5 year anniversary. We would have two kids, you would get to pick where we'd live. I'd get to change my name to Y/N Cameron. My bed feels empty without you. You were my first boyfriend, my first kiss, my first time, my first love, and as much as this hurts now, I am forever grateful you taught me how to love. I love you Rafe Cameron. No matter what.
Love,
Y/N
That he had grown so distant and that his love had shifted. I wish he felt the same.
Sarah finally convinced you to go to the beach with her due to you staying inside for nearly 3 months. You were about to meet Sarah's boyfriend and his friends for the first time. At first Sarah told you that she could cancel on John B, but you refused and insisted on meeting everyone.
You sat next to her on your towel, letting the sun hit your skin. You couldn't help but softly grin at the warm feeling. "Guys! Over here!" Sarah called out. A group of teens walked over to you two, welcoming smiles on everyone's faces. "Guys, this is Y/N. Y/N this is JJ, Kiara, Pope, and my boyfriend John B."
You stood up from your spot and welcomed Sarah's friends with a smile. Kiara on the other hand pulled you into a tight hug. You let out a surprised laugh, hugging the girl back. Sarah had explained to them that you had just had a rough break up and to stay away from the topic.
"You give really good hugs." You admitted, releasing the girl.
The day was going beautifully, everyone was swimming or surfing. You finally felt relaxed, like everything is okay. "Hey! Y/N look at this!" John B randomly shouted. Your head snapped towards him, looking at the shell he had in his hands. You observed it before a familiar voice echoed from further down the beach. Your hands dug into the sand, John B looking down at you with pity in his eyes.
"It's him isn't it?" He softly nodded his head. You squeezed your eyes shut and took a deep breath. JJ appeared by your side, "you want me to teach you how to surf?" Your heart felt warm at his offer. Nodding your head, you followed JJ into the ocean, your eyes not daring to look at Rafe.
Don't tell me that it's over, the book of you and I. Now you've scribbled out my name and you've erased my favorite lines.
After a long day of JJ teaching you how to surf, everybody agreed to get dinner at The Wreck. You jumped out of John B's van, holding the front door to the restaurant open for your friends. You stepped foot into the dining room, only to pause in your steps.
You didn't care that you saw Rafe, you cared that you saw some girl under his arm. Your friends saw the color leave your face, all of them shoving back out the front door. You inhaled and exhaled harshly to prevent yourself from crying. "Hey. hey, come here." Sarah comforted you in her arms, trying your best to maintain your composure. You quickly stepped away from her, "no, no it's okay. I'm okay," you lied, shaking your hands out, "I think I just need to go home."
Kiara nodded her head, "I'll take you home if you want." You shook your head, "no it's okay. I'm just gonna walk home." Sarah's eyebrows raised up. "Y/N that's like an 8 mile walk." You shrugged your shoulders. "I just want to be alone and walking is good. I'll text you when I get home, okay?" Everyone gave you a hug before watching you walk away from them.
The moment you had your back turned on them, you broke down. How could he have moved on so quickly? Was she just a fling or a new relationship? So many questions in your mind, you knew could not be answered.
There were so many chapters that we never got to write, like cereal for dinner and staying up all night.
Rafe gently nudged your body, "psst. Baby, are you awake?" He whispered. You flipped around and faced him. "I haven't been able to sleep at all." You said, your hand immediately finding its place on the side of his face. "Wanna go skinny dipping?" He suggested. You jumped out of his bed as soon as he finished his sentence. He knew you had always wanted to try that, and since his parents were renovating a house that was 6 hours away staying a hotel, he knew this was a perfect time to do it.
You raced him down the stairwell and into his backyard. Quickly stripping, you were left in nothing. You jumped into the water, thankful that the pool lights were off. Rafe jumped in, joining you. You leaned your head back, letting the water sweep through your hair.
Rafe swam up to you, his hands finding your butt as you wrapped your legs around his waist. "I don't know why we didn't do this sooner." You joked, pressing your chest against his. He swiped a stray piece of wet hair away from your eyes, his thumb shifting down to your lips. "Because we both know where this would lead." His thumb skimmed across your bottom lip, allowing you to open your mouth to kiss it.
I remember where we started, I remember how you looked, but now I'm missing bits and pieces from the pages that you took. You never gave a reason, I'll forever wonder why, we never got to finish the book of you and I. Don't tell me, tell me that you're leaving me. My belly hurts and my heart is hardly beating right, I hate to beg, but I'll try one last time.
Dear Rafe,
It's been exactly one year since we broke up. I became friends with some Pogues. I know you'd flip on me if I told you that and we were still together, but they're treating me better than you have towards the end of our relationship. I'm not gonna lie, I still miss you sometimes, most of the time actually. I'm still confused on why things ended the way they did. You've avoided me the entire time, leaving me without a clue and I hate it. I picked at every flaw about myself, trying to figure out if that's why you left. Do you know how mentally draining that is? God, it fucking sucks. I stopped crying over you though. Yeah it hurts my heart when I see you, but I think I wasted all my tears on you. I really don't know why I'm even writing to you anymore, I feel like I told you everything I needed to. I used to beg every day and pray every single night to get you back, and it hasn't happened. But I get it now. You finished our story before I got the chance to finish it myself, and that's just how love works sometimes. I'll never forget you Rafe Cameron, but I'll also never forgive you.
Sincerely,
Y/N

I was reminiscing just the other day
While having coffee all alone and Lord, it took me away
Back to a first-glance feeling on New York Time
Back when you fit in my poems like a perfect rhyme
Coffee before work was a morning ritual. It was a form of meditation, outside of the apartment. Your call times were all over the place, so it could be any time of the morning. Sometimes it was 5 am, sometimes noon. Either way, before work coffee was a must. The job was tiring. Running around, getting people to their places, occasionally helping the gaffer with lights because that used to be your focus in college. Your feet would ache and your back felt close to breaking every time you collapsed into bed at the end of the work day...whenever that would be.
This morning was different, because it was premiere day. You’d see him again for the first time in awhile. The press tour started months ago, so you both had a reason not to speak. The project was over, and he jumped into the plane and flew across the world. And you stayed home, continuing onto your next project, working away your life as usual. New actors, stunt doubles. A new director, a new boss. Both of your lives were fast paced in different ways, but they were fast nonetheless. You had that excuse at least.
You couldn’t use “destiny” or “fate” because that was only in the movies you helped produce. That only happened in fake rain and scripted conversations. The declaration of love, the crazy drive to the airport, the showing up on the doorstep at 3 in the morning. No, yours was a slow burn. Inside jokes and special treatment and flirting for months. It was the long game - the kind where nobody wins.
Took off faster than a green light "Go"
Yeah, you skipped the conversation when you already know
I left a note on the door with a joke we'd made
And that was the first day
You had been in charge of him as head AD. You kept everyone in the loop, made sure everyone was on time, yelled at those not doing their jobs right and feeling bad after. And as head AD you were in charge of the lead actor. He was as sweet as the media portrayed him to be, no secret personality. No douchebag came out behind closed doors. He was himself constantly. You were envious of it. You would call your job “professional people pleaser” and he would laugh and tell you all it took was a change of perspective. He made you enjoy the work better. He made you remember why you started in the first place.
So that’s how it started. One day you came to knock on his trailer and he was gone. You left a note on his trailer door
“Come to set now, you’re late!!”
Too harsh? Sarcastic anger was hard to detect through a post-it note. So you scribbled another line.
“Xx- the professional people pleaser”
You found out he was late because he was buying you coffee.
And darling, it was good never looking down
And right there where we stood was holy ground
So then began the whirlwind. It took three months of pre-production and shooting and meetings and late nights. But he finally asked you out. You had another two months left on the studio backlot back in LA, so you would have some time together before he was off to a different country, a different movie. You guys would hang out with the other cast members, go to the movies at midnight when no fans would swarm, go out to dinner and bars in town. But the cast started to get busy (and suspicious). So they would slowly start to cancel, until it was just you two and you’d be off adventuring on your own. Until one night, while getting ice cream and walking downtown he sprung it on you.
“Want to go out tomorrow?”
“To the bars?”
“No, like...go out. With me.”
You stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. Your ears were red from the chill, wearing his jacket. And he had never seen you look prettier.
“Like...o-on a date?” you smiled nervously.
He coughs to cover up the nerves. “Y-yeah. Unless you don’t want to I understa-”
“No, no! I would love to.” The relief on his face and in his body language was noticeable. But endearing.
You would still smile every time you walked along that sidewalk on the way to work. Sometimes with his hand in yours, even when your call time was two hours earlier. He didn’t like sleeping in the hotel bed if it was just him. You didn’t have to use your company provided hotel room anymore after the third date.
Spinning like a girl in a brand new dress
We had this big wide city all to ourselves
We blocked the noise with the sound of 'I need you'
And for the first time I had something to lose
LA always had something new to do. You showed him all your favorite spots, and he would describe the British equivalent. Chick fil A had nothing on Nando’s, but Caffè Nero had nothing on Peet’s. You took him to a Dodger game, Aladdin at the Pantages, showed him the most discreet path at Runyon Canyon. You showed him your favorite little shack on PCH that had the greatest burgers and where you would study in college when you wanted to leave campus. You were inseparable.
You were starting to show him parts of you that you didn’t give a second thought, but he could tell they completed you. And that meant the world to him.
You fell for each other quickly, smoothly - like the red wine you would pour every night before your one day off each week. He was a quick learner, so he knew by the second time you drank together that red wine made you sleep in. So he restricted it to the evenings before those days.
You always swooned over the concept of “ways to say I love you” without saying it explicitly, not realizing you were doing it yourself. You liked to call him anything but his name in public so that people wouldn’t recognize him as quickly. He appreciated it, not only because you were trying to help him maintain inconspicuous but also because he loved the nicknames you picked out.
“Here’s your coffee, love” or
“Sleepy, bub? You can take a nap at my place during the break.” or
“Hey lovey, what do you want for dinner?”
You were an anxious person. Work was high stress, and you were really hard on yourself. You had high expectations for everyone, including yourself. You had a hard time relaxing, and he did his best to help ease that trouble. For such a high-stress career, he was surprisingly skilled at remaining calm. So one night, you guys argue about it. It’s nothing huge, but everything seems big to you. He gets so worked up deciding to leave before he says anything too harsh, and takes a walk around your apartment block. When you call him crying and you can’t get words out, he’s at your door in two minutes. He knocks on it urgently and you answer in seconds. His eyes soften at the sight of you, wrapped in his sweater and a blanket with the puffiest (prettiest) eyes. Your voice comes out small and raspy - “Please don’t go. I need you.”
He doesn’t even miss a beat before saying “I love you.” He wipes the remaining tear off your cheek while you gaze up at him, and say it back.
And I guess we fell apart in the usual way
And the story's got dust on every page
But sometimes I wonder how you think about it now
And I see your face in every crowd
You were unsure of how to go about this kind of thing. It was your first experience in a relationship that serious, and with a movie star no less. The arguments became more frequent, the adventures less common. You made less time for each other, and didn’t spend much time together on set. Even when you had to work together, you guys weren’t really together.
Your doubts got the best of you. As shooting came to a close, you were debating how he would want to keep you, what could possibly be so special about you that was worth maintaining a long distance relationship in an already complicated life. He saw it as your excuse for a way out. So in turn, both of you disguised your feelings behind ‘if that’s what you want’ and short responses. And you would each trudge home to your respective beds and cry until the clock read 4. Everything was falling apart, and by the time the flight out for the press tour came around, you had been done for a week and didn’t say goodbye. That hurt the most.
You kept up with everything, of course, Social media was a double-edged sword, keeping you at bay knowing he wasn’t seeing anyone else (publicly) but also knowing where he was, the fun he was having, how the cast was continuing to live without you. It was overwhelming most of the time.
Meanwhile, you were radio silence. No posts, no words through the grapevine, no discussion of your life with producers that knew both of you. You tried your best to keep it that way. You both had very different forms of coping. He wanted to force himself to seem okay, and you locked yourself away for months in order to heal privately. Isn’t that how it goes? One heals alone so when they are finally back in view the other realizes what they lost?
And that is how you ended up here, at Sunset and Holloway drinking your regular dirty chai, writing a to do list and journaling a bit - about him. About how in a few hours you would both have to be on the red carpet, smiling, pretending to not feel like your body was on fire by the mere presence of him. You may be paired for an interview, or two, or twenty. You would have to go to the after party and probably get drunk to survive it.
You aren’t ready for what’s to come.
Later in the evening, you finally put on your outfit, do your makeup, and meet the driver outside. No amount of lip gloss could hide your nervous habit of biting your lip. No eyeshadow could deflect the attention from the bags under your eyes from barely sleeping the month, the week, the night before. You’re still weak.
The lights are flashing, the black clothing clad PA’s are ushering people around. The interviewers are at the ready, and you breathe in and out. Over and over.
You approach the first interviewer, discussing the movie and eventually the cast. They ask what it’s like to work with him. What his favorite scene is. What your favorite scene is. Him. Him. Him.
Speaking of, where is he?
The entire night goes by with no sign of him. You hear his name in passing, always constantly behind you. You can never catch a glimpse because you’re being ushered to the next task. Interview here, pictures here. Everyone is always needing something. How does he live like this? Maybe this was why you guys weren’t meant for each other. He could handle this. You couldn’t.
He could handle you, and you couldn’t.
Tonight I'm gonna dance for all that we've been through
But I don't wanna dance if I'm not dancing with you
The after party finally arrives, and the open bar is calling your name. Vodka and red bull, wine, beer. All of your friends. You’re ready to forget for the rest of the night, letting the weight of life float away for awhile before it takes its usual spot on the center of your shoulders.
Ordering a drink from the tall, dark, and handsome bartender - you swig it down as quick as possible without being trashy. You hear him clear his throat behind you, trying to get your attention. He uses that godforsaken nickname. You had three for him, but he only had one for you.
“Hi, darlin’.” Fucking accent.
The sound of your voice reminds you of that night of the first night that became the first time you said you loved each other. Soft and raspy and broken down. You can only manage one word.
“Tom.”

Myanmar
📍Yangon
From the taxi ride from the airport to our hostel room, we immediately noticed the traffic here is even worse than in Bangkok: cars straddling lanes, honking nonstop, pedestrians having no right-of-way despite walking signals, etc.
So when we walked around, we tried our very best not to get angry at cars and instead valued our lives by waiting as long as needed before crossing a road.
We also immediately noticed the strong presence of areca nut. This nut is wrapped in betel leaf and people keep it in their cheeks while sucking/spitting the juice, which apparently provides a stimulant response. It also results in red stains EVERYWHERE and people spitting this stuff CONSTANTLY. Seriously, roads and sidewalks are red and people are nonstop hacking/spitting inches from our feet.
That being said, most people here are so so so nice. Apart from the cultural differences in personal space/hygeine, we've been smiled and waved at nonstop (almost every time there's a child) and the tiny babies and children make me smile instantly no matter what the other circumstances are. They're so friggin CUTE!!!!! We tried to take the circle train and we were approached by an extremely friendly man (named Ham? who spoke to us about Justin Bieber and Trudeau and taught us simple Burmese phrases). An hour or so into the train ride, we realized we'd been led astray and were on a train straight away/straight back. It was still cool to see the culture and the landscape, but we were hungry and exhausted by the end of the 4.5 hour excursion. We also saw the famous Pagoda Shwedagon at night and it was beautiful -- I definitely prefer seeing temples at night. The next day we explored an abandoned amusement park, which was apparently built in 1997 by the Burmese dictatorship to distract people from the political/military turmoil going on. It closed down in 2013 and was quickly reclaimed by the forest, giving it an eerie but very cool feel. There are people squatting in the old shops because they had nowhere else to go when they lost their jobs after the park was suddenly closed.
After 2 nights in Yangon, We then took a night bus to Inle Lake, which is where we are right now.
📍Inle Lake
We decided to get up bright and early (5 am) to take a boat tour of the lake and see the sunrise. We knew it would be chilly, so we wore as many layers as possible, but our feet were completely numb by the time the sun came up. "I thought we were coming to Southeast Asia to get AWAY from the cold!!!" and "WHY did you tell me not to pack my hoodie!!?" are things I have to keep hearing from a grumpy Mathew. I think the view was absolutely worth the chilly experience. I'm really happy we decided not to skip Inle Lake after reading reviews of it being too touristy. It's so serene here and a nice break between hectic cities. It's also so interesting seeing the way these people live -- every single building is on stilts and they have to use a boat to get to another house/shop. We saw families load up on these tiny boats and maneuver around so easily and balanced, whereas Mat and I were nervous of tipping our boat with only us 2 and our guide...
We've been using the bikes provided to us from our hostel to explore a little bit and today we're going to a winery (random, I know) before taking another night bus to our next stop: Bagan!!

Five - Quito
Our second breakfast in our hotel was great again, eggs, fruit, cereal, the usual. We got up fairly early as we wanted to get the Teleferiqo cable car up the mountain the city was built under. We got a taxi to the bottom and I was getting nervous. Not just because of the long and high cable car but also because we were going up to 4000 metres in altitude, the highest I'd ever been. I wasn't sure how my body was going to react and since this was how high we'd be climbing on the 3-day Quilotoa Loop in a few days it was a sort of test.
We bought our tickets and entered the long queue watching people get into the cabins and travel up. While we were in the queue my imagination ran wild with images of the cabin falling. But if you imagine it that means it won't happen, right?
Soon we were pointed to some yellow circles in a row that was our designated waiting spot until the cabin came around. As soon as we got on to the circle Mike, being the nerd he is, said loudly 'beam me up Scotty'. We were not beamed up though, we hurridly got in to the cabin worrying we wouldn't make it before it started ascending.
We sat in the cabin with two Americans and two Ecuadorians. Mike enjoyed the view while I periodically turned my head to look down then immediately turned back round again. The journey took quite a long time and all our ears popped on the way up.
We disembarked and felt the cool mountain air, after putting on our matching down jackets (we are officially married) we wandered around taking photos and then started walking to the viewpoint. The walk uphill was strenuous and I could really feel my heart pounding and my head getting slightly dizzy. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't feel ill though. Having made it to the lookout we found a wooden double deck chair so we sat down and enjoyed the view. It was amazing to see a sprawling city right under this huge mountain, we both wondered why they would even build a city there. The scenery is like northern wales on steroids so it's as if Cardiff were in Snowdonia, and bigger! We had a great view of the surrounding mountains too but unfortunately it was slightly cloudy so we couldn't see the largest (currently smoking) volcano in the distance.
Starting to feel cold we continued walking and stumled upon a pair of big swings and so of course had to have the mandatory swing photo. My legs were so short I couldn't start swinging so like a child Mike had to come and push me. After our photos we walked back to the cable car to have our first Ecuadorian hot chocolate (the first of many, I hope!). With a view out to the city we sipped the thick sweet drink, it was amazing and this was just a cheap touristy one. I can't wait to have a famously good one (which I have researched, obviously).
We got the cable car back down the mountain and for some reason going down it was easier to look out and admire the view. Once out we decided to go to the Museo de la Ciudad, a museum I'd read good things about. After buying our tickets a woman proceeded to talk for about 5 minutes in Spanish while we 'Si'd" and nodded like we knew what on earth she was saying. Luckily, there were a lot of hand gestures so we got the jist of where to go and we do know 'banos' so worked out where the toilets were.
We followed the obvious route around the museum learning how the first people came to Quito and how the city was formed. It was a brilliant museum with displays showing what food they first cultivated and what their houses looked like. It even had English translations which we've come to realise aren't common. There were some stranger sections of the museum like the full sized bus experience, which was a room made to look exactly like the inside of a bus. I guess if you've not been on a bus before it might be interesting.
After the museum we headed to the gold church, Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, which we'd tried to get into multiple times the day before but it was always closed. As we walked in the man said it was free as it was Sunday, we saved 5 dollars each and felt very pleased! You're not allowed to take photos inside the church which is annoying, I don't think God would be oppposed to spreading photos of his house but what do I know. The church was the goldest thing I've ever seen, every inch was gilded. Every inch was also covered in scary baby heads. It was so inticrate and had so many baby heads I don't even know how they began to design it. There were also religious paintings everywhere. I've come to realise I really enjoy a hell painting, of which there seem to be many in Ecuador. These paintings are gruesome, dipicting all the tortures endured in hell and with text beside each one showing what they were for, like murder, adultery or incest. Even the usually serene paintings of Mary have a looming monster in the corner, they're much more interesting.
Having walked a lot it was finally lunch time and we decided to get almuerzo, a daily set menu offered at many local restaurants costing a couple of dollars. We found a greasy spoon looking restaurant that was busy with locals and were quickly given chicken noodle soup followed by even more roasted chicken with rice. I can't believe how much chicken they eat here. I liked the soup better than the chicken, I think because I've eaten so much meat recently, but both courses were delicious. We were also given a thick, sweet drink that I think was made from either sugar cane or corn. I wasn't a fan but Mike liked it.
We wandered around the old town a little more, looking at all the stalls before stumbling on the traditional homemade ice cream I'd read about. It's made in big copper bowls and hand mixed. We bought a coconut cone to share, it was nice but I wouldn't buy it again. You could tell it had been hand mixed. After the ice cream we went back to the hotel to get our bags and get a taxi to our hostel. Unfortunately the voucher we had only covered two nights in Quito so our last night was in a hostel in the new town.
After arriving to the hostel we checked out our pod. Instead of traditional dorms filled wih bunkbeds, the hostel is made up of pods, kind of like bunk beds but that are enclosed with a curtain drawn over the opening. They feel like a cosy little private nook. We had a double pod by a window with a view over the city with the mountains behind and it was perfect.
Having got to the new town earlier than expected we ventured out to find the artisenal market. Wandering down the streets it felt like a completely different city to that of the old town. There were bars and restaurants every block but very few people, maybe because it was a Sunday. The market was good, consisting of small alleys with stalls on either side showing the local wears. It was all aimed at tourists and every stall basically sold the same thing but it was nice to look around. I nearly bought a lot of things but decided to wait as we were only on day 5 and I wasn't 100 percent on anything. We did buy some Ecuadorian chocolate to have in the evening though (as we were still full from lunch and didn't want a full meal).
We walked back to the hostel talking about what we wanted to buy later in the trip. We immediately got into our pod and relaxed. It's felt like we haven't stopped so it was really nice to have a full evening to read, watch a film, watch Tiny House Nation (it's rubbish but brilliant, you should watch!) and then discuss if we could live in a tiny house. Sat in our cosy pod, we obviously decided we could.

Day 58 (Colorado River, Ehrenberg BLM)
Tumblr media
On Monday we ran the road along the Colorado River south to see how far it goes. At 7.5 km it was time to turn around to go home for breakfast. Just at that point the road veered away from the River but a narrower one ran next to River. I hate when something like this happens because I'm just dying to see where it goes!  But breakfast is calling. This would be the perfect place to hike. We can drive here and then walk along the River to see how far we can get and still be on the River. Scouting for next year.
Bill thought this a good idea and when we were getting ready to leave this afternoon to do the 4 mile drive to start hiking a couple of BLM Rangers stopped. This year we've seen BLM officers or Rangers at 4 out of 8 places (scroll back to Days ). All were just checking how many days we'd been there, asking if we had questions, etc so we assumed the same. But no, these guys were here to tell us that the area we had parked was for Day Use only and had been so since 1968. They were really working to enforce it this year. We told them how surprised we were since this was our 3rd time in this area and there were no signs or info on the website saying this, plus we'd seen other people over the 3 years in our very spot . They were super nice and said since we were planning on leaving in a couple days we could continue with our plans.
Now our "wouldn't it be fun to go to a completely different area for next year" scouting hike turned into a "we'll definitely be going to a completely different area next year" scouting hike.
Tumblr media
And we found wonderful places 5 miles away with fantastic River views. We met 2 couples who live near Temecula and come here together every year to boondocks for a few days. You'll definitely be seeing pics next year from where we met them!
Tumblr media
And like every night so far we were provided wirh entertainment from the ducks right in front of the motor home. About 30 of them paddling their feet off to stay even with the current, going completely butt up under the water to eat and every so often making that thrashing water noise that only comes from lots of wings hitting water all at the same time. BTW - every night we remark on the diving for food and that we never see them eat any fish. Turns out they use their teeth as strainers to get tiny who knows what out of the water (like a filtering system).

Good News Everyone
I'm sitting here right now, waiting for my season ticket football page to load, so that I can buy season tickets for football next semester. I'm thinking about my day today and this week. It's been a nice week. A nice return to classes and a good time to be in France because the weather is getting a lot better. Flowers started blooming about 2 weeks ago, and when they did I would tell Haley on our walks to classes. "Wow, those weren't blooming yesterday." or "Wow, check out that tree with the cherry blossoms!" And then she might say like "Wow, Nick, you know that happens every year right?" And we'd laugh.
I actually did take a photo of the trees. Here's a photo I took outside of the McDonalds down the road.
Tumblr media
très belle, eh?
Spring's one of the top seasons in my opinion, certainly better than Winter, so I'm feeling an upgrade in the weather department incoming. It's all very exciting because I also bought a bike. I looked on Facebook Marketplace and met up with this guy to buy an old Peugeot bike. It looked good, but when we met up, the things gears were all messed up. I negotiated him down in price to 50 euros from 100. Honestly, I still think it was worth less, but I took it anyway. Let me tell you, my fingers have rarely seen an hour without a little bit of chain grease on them since. I've been transporting the bike, messing up the chain, thinking about how to fix it, and eventually taking it to a shop to fix it all through the last two days. He quoted me 65 euros to fix it. I didn't like the sound of that, so I bought another bike for 65 and am going to sell the other one for a small loss. If you ever want to buy a bike in Cergy go to Velo Services near Les Linandes orange. The guy working there is super nice. Overall, all this bike work has been really fun and some good experience.
Moving on.
Grace and I have gone on some adventures in Paris this week. Starting with the Pompidou museum. We weren't that into it. I've actually been to it twice, and both times I didn't really enjoy it. I can't explain in words why though. It's more like a feeling I get. I did get some awesome photos though.
Tumblr media
View from one of the escalators on the Pompidou modern art museum
The clouds make the houses look like they're going to start floating away like the house in Up.
We also saw the Sacre Coeur. That was pretty cool. I'm not big on the tourist spots in cities, so I didn't really enjoy the crowds. Some bright sides were that we ran into this sidestreet with this statue behind these nice trees.
Tumblr media
Not my best picture, but we paid this statue a visit. Paid our respects and moved on.
And seeing that was really fun. I'm a proponent of the journey being more fun than the destination, so I'll try to find detours and sideshows whenever I can when I'm traveling with a flexible timeframe.
This week's also been good for my running. I've been getting back into the grind and I ran 5 miles Tuesday.
Tumblr media
I ran this route around the lake nearby Cergy past the port, and I found some interesting things going on. Apparently, there's a pyramid in the lake, you can see it a bit in the photo below. Also, I was talking to my friend Maxime at lunch, and he was telling me that there's actually a laser that goes off too. A laser. A Cergy laser that points to Paris and goes off every night. A laser. I didn't want to believe him, but knowing Cergy, it's possible. I'm going to check that out soon, I'll keep you updated. Until next week.
Over and out.
