The audiobook app I use changed their subscriptions from unlimited to hours per month packages. I thought maybe I could get away with a 20 hour a month package because I listen at 1.8 speed but it turns out they count the hours at original speed.

All this to say, I ran out of hours in the last 30 minutes of a book and had to bump my subscription up.

guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.

talking to preschoolers is awesome bc they have not fully differentiated stories into 'true stories' and 'imaginary stories' yet so you will tell them about something that happened you once (coyote came out of a bush right in front of you and got startled) and they will tell you about how one time their house was full of coyotes in every room 'including five in the garage' and they're not even like, aware i think of the idea that they are technically 'lying'. they are simply telling stories about coyotes bc its time to tell stories about coyotes.

You move into a house and aw cute, it has the kids height on the walls but you notice there's a three foot difference in height between measurements, you check the date, they're a month apart. The final measurement is on the ceiling. It's dated two days ago.

You're part of a recovery team that have finally found a stranded ship, they were found too late and have all passed a long time ago. They all died of starvation. You enter their storeroom, it's filled with food. In the dining hall you find the tables laden with perfectly fine looking breads, cakes, cured meats, jams, candies. Your medic says all the people sitting at the table didn't eat a Thing.

You wake up in an apocalypse. You can't find anyone at all as you wander the streets but you do hear faint music playing from somewhere. You stumble into a supermarket, to see all the aisles still full, except for the shelf that was full of ear plugs, which look to be the only thing that was looted.

Like there's light, sound, props. Having a street where every house is decimated except for One. Landing on a planet known for having No Water and a plant is growing and you don't know where it could have possibly gotten moisture from but you can't find the citizens Anywhere.

I'm sorry, I'm just kinda over the "graffiti on the wall to show the bad guy is around". That's not environmental storytelling that's just normal story. Show me I'm in the villains territory by the rain suddenly cutting out above me as I'm driving, even though it's meant to be raining all night. I park the car and step out, and realise the constellations are Wrong, until I see they're Not constellations, they're the blinking lights of a massive ship-

Podcast Days, "Viaje al centro del podcast": Números e industria

El 23 de octubre de 2023 pude asistir al evento Podcast Days basado en la industria del audio actual, allí se realizaron charlas con profesionales del sector y una mesa redonda con los representantes de algunas de las plataformas más importantes del sector, como son Eduardo Alonso, representante de Spotify, Mar Abad, representando el podcast “El Extraordinario”, Francesco Buccino, como representante de Megaphone e Isabel Peletero como cabeza de IMOP.

Pese a la dificultad por llegar a un consenso para establecer la definición de lo que es un podcast, se llegó a la conclusión de que el contenido de audio vive un momento de gloria. Los amantes del audio no son exquisitos, hay una escucha amplia y variada del contenido. Hace un tiempo el mundo del podcast vivió una etapa de expansión, pero con el tiempo se ha asentado, se ha podido establecer un catálogo, de esta manera se puede saber qué es lo que verdaderamente funciona.

Con el tiempo las diferentes plataformas han podido experimentar un incremento en su audiencia, por ejemplo, Spotify, al dejar de ser solo una plataforma de música y convertirse en una plataforma de audio, ha podido multiplicar por diez sus oyentes de podcast, han conseguido transicionar el mercado hacia un público más joven gracias a hacer los formatos más accesibles. Pero no se trata de un caso aislado, Maribel Riaza, de Storytel declaró que en 2017, que la plataforma contaba con 3000 audiolibros, solo 6 años después se cuenta con 25000, generando así una gran evolución de los audiolibros. 

Además de incrementos, se hablaron de avances, como por ejemplo los tecnológicos, se está experimentando con la inteligencia artificial para la creación de podcasts, esto puede ser bien o mal visto a ojos de quien lo vea pero no se puede negar que es un gran paso en la industria del audio. No solo están siendo posibles avances tecnológicos, la expansión del concepto de podcast alude a la creatividad, por esto, el diseño de los mismos cada vez está cobrando más importancia, forma parte de la experiencia y de su contenido. Vivimos en un momento en el que las cosas nos entran por los ojos, es por esto que proporcionar a la audiencia buenos diseños amplía el público.

El podcast: una industria a la que se le está dando forma.

El 27 de octubre de 2023 fue el último día del evento para profesionales del podcasting: Podcast Days. Se celebraron varias charlas y mesas redondas, entre ellas: Viaje al centro del podcast: Números e industria, en la cual se aunaron diferentes personalidades del sector: Isabel Peletero, IMOP, Maribel Riaza, Storytel, Edu Alonso, Spotify, Francesco Buccino, Megaphone y Mar Abad del El Extraordinario como moderadora.

La industria del podcast está en auge y al ser un sector en constante cambio todovía no está definido, por lo que surge un debate ¿Cuáles son los límites que enmarcan este tipo de contenido auditivo? Los profesionales dentro del sector no llegan a un consenso en su definición.

En los últimos años se ha transformado el consumo de audio, así como las edades de los usuarios o la segmentación de esta. El consumo total de audio en octubre de 2023 fue de un 89, 4 %. (IMOP, 2023). En cuanto al consumo de podcast, la generación z y milenial aumentan los porcentajes de audiencia. En la plataforma Spotify, 1 de cada 3 oyentes ha escuchado un podcast.

Debido a este incremento de consumo cada año aumenta el contenido en español. En Storytel durante el año 2016 sólo había 3.000 títulos, y actualmente hay más de 25.000 títulos en castellano en la plataforma. Este aumento en el catalogo, en el cual se ve reflejado el auge de la industria, ha sido provocado por el incremento de la competencia y acompañado por la subida de demanda de contenidos.

Existen sinergias entre contenidos que democratizan el audio. Los consumidores tiene la capacidad de diseñar su propia parrilla, según IMOP, el 50% de los jóvenes menores de 35 escuchan podcast independiente . Megaphone, plataforma de la familia de Spotify que proporciona un software para la monetización de podcasts, tiene como obejetivo trabajar con todas las realidades de la industria, mainstream o independiente para que esta crezca.

La monetización o la rentabilidad del podcast no está completamente definida ya que nació como algo amateur. En la actualidad Spotify tiene herramientas de medición de streams totalmente transparentes que ofrece a los creadores de contenido. En relación a la monetización de Storytel al ser una plataforma con ADN editorial había asuntos de la monetización ya resueltos, pero al ser el podcast un contenido distinto al de los audiolibros se ha tenido que reconstruir contractualmente.

La transformación en la industria del audio y del podcast es algo inminente, desde las nuevas herramientas para su monetización y estructuras de redes publicitarias, hasta el posible contenido generado por Inteligencia Artificial. El podcast comenzó por pasión, pero se le debe dar forma a esta industria tan joven.
