Stonathan ficlet
"Shit-" Jonathan cursed under his breath, using the palm of his left hand to wipe tears from his eyes.
There was a searing pain in his right hand, a pain he had felt a few times before, but never knew who was causing it until now.
The attention of everyone at the party was turned to him - or at least it felt like everyone.
"Jonathan?" Nancy stepped forward, letting go of Steves hand, causing the pain to subside "Jonathan are you alright?"
Jonathan looked up at Nancy through teary eyes, and simply nodded "yeah-" his voice was hoarse "yeah I'm ok"
He looked around, noticing the people staring, and readjusted his gaze to Nancy, who looked like she saw right through his lie.
"I uhm..." He looked down at his shoes "am just tired, I'm gonna head home" he spun around on his heel, and pushed his way through the people to the door, not stopping to hear Nancy respond.
When he got to his car, the pain came back, it felt like his hand was being burned. The tears began to flow down his face once again. He pulled the car door open, practically throwing himself inside.
It was probably around midnight when he got home, he couldn't care less though, his mom and brother weren't home anyways.
The pain was gone at that point, he sat on the couch and pulled his knees to his chest, he knew it would come back eventually.
He looked down at his right palm, a small mark right in the center.
Sometimes he wished to cut it off of his hand, maybe it would make the pain stop.
It didn't take long for the pain to return, somehow knowing who his soulmate was made it worse.
Jonathan didn't cry much, not even when the pain happened before, maybe it was because he was drunk, although he barely even drank one beer, or maybe it was because he didn't love his soulmate.
Really, he didn't want Nancy to be his soulmate, he wanted someone else, someone like Steve...no, just Steve really.
The pain receded, and after waiting for what felt like hours, he figured it had stopped for the night, and he fell asleep on the couch.
He woke up at around 8 in the morning, his phone buzzing lightly on the coffee table in front of him.
He picked it up and immediately saw a text from Nancy
'Hey Jonathan, I'm coming over'
Shit, he knew what this meant.
Nancy must've known. She must've known that they were soulmates.
Jonathan was hoping she wouldn't realize.
About an hour later, he heard a knock at the front door, Nancy, no doubt.
He debated pretending not to be home, but he knew she saw his car.
He pulled himself to the door, opening it slowly. Sure enough, it was Nancy.
Before he could even speak, she grabbed his hand, pushing their soulmate marks together, he furrowed his eyebrows "what are you doing?" He asked, pulling his hand away "I need to know" she responded. 'Need to know what?' He wanted to ask, but he figured he already knew.
"We're soulmates, right?" She asked, looking down at his hand, which now hung as his side.
"I think so" he breathed, his voice quiet.
"I thought Steve was my soulmate" she admitted.
'I wish he was mine' he wanted to say, but he knew he shouldn't
"What now?" He asked, crossing his arms. "I guess.." Her voice trailed off "I break up with Steve?"

Nancy knocked on Steve's front door, and Jonathan stood awkwardly next to her.
Steve looked upset when he opened the door, not just upset, angry.
"Are you cheating on me?" Steve looked between Nancy and Jonathan "I felt it Nancy!" He sounded exasperated "It hurt like hell" he laughed humorously, tears pricking at his eyes.
Nancy looked confused "but...Jonathan is my soulmate" she grabbed Steves hand, pushing their palms together.
Jonathan squeezed his eyes shut, the pain in his palm catching him off guard, why did Nancy do that?
Nancy let go of Steves hand, and nodded "I think we got this wrong"
She grabbed them both by the wrists and put their hands together, earning a small yelp from Jonathan.
"No pain" she whispered, mostly to herself.
Both of their eyes widened "Jonathan is my soulmate...?" Steves voice was quiet, Jonathan thought it sounded almost hopeful, but it was probably his imagination.
"I'm gonna walk home" Nancy smiled, a sad but genuine mix of emotions showing on her face, as she walked away. Steve and Jonathan were both to shocked to debate with her.
Jonathan was staring at Steve, their hands still pressed together, Steve smiled sheepishly "we should uh" he pulled his hand away "probably go inside"
Jonathan nodded, following Steve into his living room.
"I'm sorry" Steve sighed, sitting down on the couch. "For what?" Jonathan asked, sitting next to him. He thought he probably knew why, but he had forgiven him forever ago.
"For everything" he gestured at Jonathan vaguely. "For being an asshole, for that fight in the alleyway" Steve was listing things on his fingers as he spoke "for accusing you of stealing my girlfriend less then 5 minutes ago"
"Most teenage boys are assholes" Jonathan responded, wanting to defuse the situation "and I won the fight anyways"
This earned him a quiet laugh from Steve. His laugh was nice when it wasn't mocking people.
The situation really hit him then "you're my soulmate..." Jonathan stated, more to himself then to Steve. "I'm your soulmate" he confirmed, looking down at his palm.
"Listen man.." Steve sighed, leaning back so that his head rested against the back of the couch "I really don't know how to feel about this"
Jonathan hummed in response, adjusting his position to mirror Steve's.
"I just, I don't know" Steve ran a hand through his hair "I never really saw myself with a guy..."
"I get that" Jonathan nodded "I'm not sure how to feel either"
'That's a lie' he thought, but maybe it wasn't, liking someone doesn't mean you have to want a relationship right?
"Lets try to be friends" Steve smiled "Like, real friends"
Jonathan liked that idea.

Fic title thingamajig of the first thing I thought of (ignore the fact we've discussed a movie of the same name)(or don't, ily): The Menu 💛

unfortunately, this is not related to the movie. but fortunately, every time i look at this my brain can only think of the line cook / server fic that has been cooking in my brain since the dawn of time! (as a former waitress with a lot of experience in the line cook department YEAH i got some stories to tell)
however, i do not see this as a steddie fic. no. i think this one, in my head at least, feels a little more stonathan. modern AU stonathan.
Jonathan is a line cook who has worked his way up, took the job at first bc it was decent pay and nights so he could still go to school. started to get good and dropped out of college and just does this.
Steve is in the most recent cast of new hires, a server with years of experience under his belt and knows how to handle the line, stupidly charming and having even the roughest of cooks in the back softening up. But he can't quite crack Jonathan. He never joins any of them for drinks after closing. He barely even looks at Steve as he's back their, keeping his head down and slinging out some of the best dishes. His disinterest keeps Steve interested.
One night, after closing on a particularly bad shift with tensions high and some not nice things said in the kitchen. There's someone outside the restaurant waiting for an opportunity, someone who knew that servers, especially closers, leave the restaurant with a lotta cash on hand and are usually alone. Steve had heard of old coworkers getting mugged, seen videos on tiktok of surveillance footage, always thought he'd be ready if it happened to him. but this guy came out of nowhere. before he could even reach for his pocket knife, he was in a chokehold. steve freezes. is about to turn over all his money, even if its a good chunk of rent, until the pressure on his neck lets up, someone snuck up on the mugger. someone is beating the shit out of the mugger.
it isn't until the mugger is coughing on the ground that steve realizes it was jonathan, doesnt fully comprehend that its jonathan until he is in steve's space, face to face with him, ears ringing as he asks "are you okay?"
FUCK. NOW I HAVE TO WRITE THIS ONE TOO.

Hello! I was re-reading -i bet you think about me- yesterday, and saw your reblog about the commentary posts 👀 would v much enjoy some info on the writing process for that fic. It's my favourite modern-era version of Jonathan, that perfect mix of grumpy and sweet 🧡 also love how that fic gently played around with the mean/petty elements of both Steve and Jonathan's personalities (v underappreciated character traits of theirs in my opinion)

omg well firstly this is very very nice of you to say!!!!! i am very honored that is a fic you would want to reread, i had a lot of fun writing that one!
and ok so originally i thought that fic might be a long oneshot (this happens very often I fear.) once i outlined and started writing, I realized that wouldn’t be the case, but before that?l? the idea for the fic was inspired by the fact that my Alexa is synced to my Spotify, which means sometimes i’m listening to music on my phone or laptop and it randomly cuts off bc my mom started listening to the Alexa at home. (Luckily this hasn’t screwed my algorithm up too badly. although i did get an email the other month thanking me for being one of earth wind & fire’s top fans.) ((also: i realize now this is a weird jump to “hmm stonathan exes to lovers au where….” but that was indeed the jump i made.))
so for several months the fic sat in my Google docs with just a few lines of prose/dialogue here and there and a couple of notes with ideas. I think the first little bit i wrote was the beginning when steve tells robin about realizing Jonathan still has his Spotify (and by that i mean that for a while the only words in the Google docs were “you know what’s funny about this? You and Jonathan have, like, the opposite taste in music.”) and then for a while I’d randomly come up with little ideas and quickly add them to the doc. In fact, i distinctly remember driving home from a vacation with my family in the car, coming up with a bunch of ideas, and quickly writing them down when we stopped at the Starbucks drive thru. (I think that was when I threw in the what makes you beautiful karaoke flashback and also the scene post-confrontation where Nancy tells steve Jonathan is seeing someone and then has to clarify it’s a therapist lmao)
So that was the ~early stage stuff, and then i fully outlined it and started actually writing and then posting it in chapters, which is around the time I decided it would be nonlinear with flashbacks breaking up the present day sections. Also: the flashbacks were very much my favorite part to write!!!
And then from there i was mainly focused on creating, like….the vibe. I pretty much knew i wanted the fic to start out fun with a lot of Spotify shenanigans but get a bit more angsty as it went on, and i wanted that to tie in with Steve’s general attitude at the beginning being “the breakup wasn’t a big deal and we weren’t even serious” (which you kinda know from the get-go can’t be true because steve and jonathan were neighbors and friends for over a year before they even started dating) and then as the fic goes on you realize it very much was serious and steve is very much not over it. And then alongside that i was trying to walk the line of “these are two fucked up individuals who are very fucked up over each other and the reasons why they broke up make sense for them as characters and are realistic but also you should root for them to get back together regardless.” which was….hard at times lmao. i mean i feel like stonathan kinda have a toxic yaoi vibe depending on characterization / context so it wasn’t hard hard but also i did want to show they were genuinely good together and happy before they self sabotaged their relationship so that was another line i also struggled to walk.
relatedly; i’m glad you said you liked steve and jonathan’s petty/mean elements because i worried at several moments i was making them too mean! i think i was especially worried people would think jonathan was too mean, mainly because you don’t get his pov so you don’t really know what’s going on in his head. which is partly what i added in a little wrap-up of the events of the fic from his point of view when he and Steve talk toward the end. but also, tbh — and maybe this will sound bad lmao — i was thinking about it and then i was like “hang on. you’re writing M/M fanfiction. The only way someone would get mad at you because they think either of them is too mean is if one of them was a woman. So you’re fine.” And that helped lmao
Not really sure when I decided what the ending would be but i knew i wanted their reconciliation convo to start with Jonathan playing a song that had some sort of significance to steve / their relationship. And I knew i wanted them to be like “we’re gonna try again and work things out” but i wanted there to be a sense that they’d be successful without necessarily doing an epilogue??? so I just did a lil paragraph at the end that was like steve imagining them living together and giving speeches at robin and Nancy’s wedding and stuff, and that was basically a little confirmation that they’d be fine and things would work out. And then i ended with a flashback to Steve suggesting they share the Spotify account initially bc I thought that would be nice and full circle :)

stonathan fake dating my beloved ❤️ which i don’t think i’ve get rly talked abt the premise on here before so here we go
ok so basically the premise is modern au, ronance are getting married. the older teens are like 25/26. robin calls steve to tell him abt the wedding and she asks if he’s bringing anyone and slightly ribs him abt how he should let her set him up with someone to which he panics and says he’s dating jonathan. they’ve been closer than before but they’re not best friends by any means. he hangs up on robin basically and immediately calls jonathan to ask him to play along. jonathan thankfully agrees bc will has been bugging him about dating too and thus the ruse begins. the plan is just to go to maybe 1 or 2 group get togethers before the wedding and then the wedding, which is out of town. tbh the only reason it’s out of town is because i needed to have a “there was only one bed” moment bc i love that trope.
anyways so they fake a relationship and pining and fluff ensues ✨✨✨

Modern + Childhood friends AU. Also Steve was the only one who dated Nancy (she didn’t live in Hawkins)
After the heartbreak that Nancy caused, Steve goes back to his home town of Hawkins. He meets back up with his childhood best friend, Jonathan and plays catch up feeling things he hasn’t since he was younger.
So, he takes a chance even if this could break him. Maybe this is it, maybe this is their time.
All Steve knows is this could either break him or bring him back to life.
A little shorter one, but I think it could work.
