1 June, CIN @ BOS, 2-8, Win
I am not superstitious (please see all my chat about not believing in jinxes whilst still hoping to avoid jinxing anything). However, to finally have a lineup waking up from a, what, fifteen or so game slumber only to have the steadily recovering and encouraging Chris Sale have to leave the game early with shoulder inflammation is somewhat disheartening. And when I say “somewhat” I mean almost a million percent disheartening. I am in a state of WTF-ing this whole MF-ing fucking thing. And, on top of our only proper, proven, dyed-in-wool ace getting hurt AGAIN, that was a weird ass fucking game. We gave up a run. We got one back. We got another run and were in the lead (rare) and then gave one back. Then we unloaded and scored six in the eighth and all of the sudden Chris Martin has the win and I am desperately trying not to make any form of Coldplay joke. For christ’s sake we scored a run on a balk last night. Was it the winning run? I don’t know. It’s all a blur. I cannot revel as much as I’d like in a win because CHRIS FUCKING SALE IS BACK ON THE IL. The struggle, in the face of such news, to crawl towards the light and find the bright sides is difficult. It would have been harder if we’d lost, but thankfully we decisively, even if somewhat tardily, won. So. Bright sides.
The Scrappy Rollercoasters were both Scrappy and Rollercoaster-y last night. Is that a bright side in the grander scheme? No. Am I happy my nickname is still apt? Yes.
We won.
We scored six runs in the 8th. That’s pretty great.
Kiké was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a dinger.
Connor Wong also hit a dinger.
Raffy went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Justin Turner had a couple of hits and a RBI.
Dugie scored a run and had an epic outfield assist, throwing out some punk Red (I am told their name is Steer) trying to tag up and score on a fly out.
In the face of the shit luck of Chris Sale suffering from shoulder inflammation, the bullpen basically locked it down from the end of the fourth inning. Chris Martin, winner of the game and I am assured not the lead singer of Coldplay gave up the only other run the Sox allowed in the game.
Ah yes. Usually, when a starting pitcher puts in a great performance, they start the bright side list. Go back. Have a look at the hundreds of posts on this ridiculous blog. It’s the format. By rights, shortened show though it was, Chris Sale had a good start. In three and two thirds innings he struck out six and walked one. Yes, he gave up five hits and a run but I feel the six strikeouts more than makes up for that. He put the Sox, even in his abbreviated time, in a place to win. But he got hurt again and is kind of a rollercoaster within a rollercoaster at this point so even though he is a bright side he didn’t get to be the first bright side.
The Yankees and Orioles lost which is great because I totally fucking hate both those fucking teams.

The Iconfactory
The latest update to Linea Sketch is now available! From textures to thumbnail cropping, version 4.3 is packed with clever new features to make sketching on your iPad easier and more fun than ever.
By now I think you all know about my deep love for The Iconfactory. They are the brains behind Twitterrific — may Ollie rest in peace — and Wallaroo. But they also make this amazing drawing app called Linea Sketch!
The Iconfactory also does design work and consultations. They recently did the artwork for Stream’s feature in the App Store . They’re extremely talented and so easy to work with. Give them a shout if you needs some design work!
If you’re an artist you should give it a try and see how you like it.
Thanksgiving FYI
Hi, I’m Jim, an enthusiastic and dedicated home cook with more than a dozen Thanksgivings under my belt. I’ve hosted everything from small friendsgivings to giant multi-family affairs in foreign kitchens and I’ve assembled some strategies to help make the day great.
Jim is an internet pal and extremely nice fellow.
Thanksgiving FYI is Jim’s Thanksgiving newsletter chock full of tips and recipes for, you guessed it, Thanksgiving!
Who doesn’t like a good thanksgiving recipe?
I’d imagine you can still sign up and get everything he’s already published if you’d like and at $5 it’s a real steal! You even get access to a Slack so you can chat with others about the big day! 🦃

It’s not quite the end of Tumblr, but when management is supposedly sending memos with the Lord Tennyson quote about having “loved and lost,” it doesn’t look like there’s much of a future.
I’ve had a Tumblr account for years and years and I cross post to it, like I do Mastodon, but I’ve never used it as my primary blog. I’d considered it multiple times but I was never happy with their fixed taxonomy. I like to publish my posts in a Y/M/D format and Tumblr doesn’t support that. They also don’t publish static HTML which is another strike against them.
I’m bummed out by the possibility of it disappearing. It’s one of those internet properties I’d like to see stick around. It’s also looks like they’re gonna drop ActivityPub. 😔
Jason Snell • Macworld
There’s no real way to gloss over the fact that Mac sales went down 34 percent versus the year-ago quarter. And yet, for some reason, Maestri and Cook got out their Tom Sawyer paintbrushes and got to work.
At some point hyper-growth will stop. It’s just the way it is. Of course Apple offsets this by raising prices, which isn’t a surprise.
I got my first M based Mac early last year and didn’t unwrap it and start using it until early summer because I felt that my x86 Mac was fine. Luckily I decided to take the plunge to M2 land because I went from being a Director back to being a Software Engineer.
For me I’d guess this M2 could easily go for five years before it feels sluggish, and who knows, maybe beyond that?
As I like to say. I’m not compiling Photoshop or Microsoft Word. I’m just compiling iOS Apps. Even big iOS apps written in Swift build super fast. I’d even wager an M1 MacBook Air would blow the doors off my old x86 based Mac. They’re fast!

This one hurts. I know Irma — Irms as everyone calls her — and Jake. I’m having a difficult time believing they’d do something illegal like this and I still want to believe it was a horrible blunder. 😔

Disney’s combined Disney Plus and Hulu streaming app is on the way. As part of its fourth-quarter earnings results, Disney announced it’s going to launch the new app in beta for bundle subscribers in December, with the official launch coming in early spring 2024.
We are Hulu subscribers, Kim loves it. It makes me wonder how much it’ll change or will it literally be merging what Hulu offers directly into the app? So far Max seems to be fine with this strategy, although I’d prefer to have HBO content front and center instead of the mix of items we have today. Here’s hoping they do a great job combining the properties. I think they will.

COSTA RICA 🇨🇷
Costa Rica is a country located in Central America that is ranked as one of the most visited international destinations. One of Costa Rica’s main sources of income is tourism. Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country and it has not had an army since the year 1948.
Tumblr media
Although the country is small and it covers only 0.03 percent of the surface of the globe, it proudly shelters 5 percent of the existing biodiversity in the entire world. Twenty six percent of the country is composed of conservation and natural protected territory.
Furthermore, 2018 has become a magnet for meeting tourism with the opening of the National Congress and Convention Center (CNCC), which can welcome some 4,600 people to its meetings.
FUN FACTS 🔥
It's one of the happiest countries in the world
There is no army!
There are over 500,000 species of wildlife.
Of the 500,000 species, 900 of them are birds
Gallo pinto is a breakfast staple.
There are over 200 volcanic formations
Costa Ricans have a high life expectancy
Its the country with more biodiversity in the World
PURA VIDA
Pura vida, meaning “pure life”, is not only a common greeting, it’s also a state of mind. Pura vida encapsulates the laidback, friendly and welcoming vibe of Costa Ricans.
Everybody will tell you PURA VIDA 💫
1 DAY IN SAN JOSÉ
San Jose is the capital of the Republic of Costa Rica; it is the head of the province. The city is the political and economic center of the country. It crowds together more than half of the commerce and the services. It receives his name in honor to Jose of Nazareth, presumed father of Jesus of Nazareth.
Tumblr media
The central corner of San Jose was founded the 7th of December in 1848. The population arises around 1737-1738.It has been Costa Rica's capital three times: in 1822, from 1823 to 1834 and from 1838 to the present time.It is a city with a very interesting mixture of history and modernity; although the center of the zone is almost vacated it becomes a crossing site during the day for more than a million people, which generates a road chaos and an increase of the contamination levels.
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SAN JOSÉ:
One day it's enough for visiting the city
We stayed at HOTEL SURA
Card payments are accepted everywhere
Barrio Amon and Barrio Escalante are the nicest one to walk through
You can easily walk everywhere
Lolita is the perfect place to go eating and to do happy hour
Make sure to rent a 4x4 car. We rented it at Budget 🚙
2 DAYS IN TORTUGUERO
Tortuguero National Park (TNP) is located northeast of Costa Rican territory and is one of the main tourist icons of Costa Rica since it is internationally recognized for protecting the most important green turtles nesting beach in the Western Hemisphere.
Away from the city and made up by an extensive network of rivers and canals, the access is possible only through small boats: this way the Tortuguero National Park is, a place unlike any other; where small communities surrounding Protected Wilderness Area, as Barra del Tortuguero and San Francisco, still retain their traditions and also enjoy the benefit of having the bicycle as their main transportation method, making the travel a true encounter with Caribbean culture.
🌴🐒Flora and fauna
• 734 plant species.
• 442 bird species.
• 138 mammal species (101 genera y 32 families).
• 118 reptile species (76 genera y 22 families).
• 58 amphibian’s species (27 genera y 11 families).
• 460 anthropoid’s species.
Tumblr media
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT TORTUGUERO:
We stayed at Hotel Icaco, right in front of the beach
You can arrive directly at La Pavona Embarcadero by car and let the car there (it's safe) - you dono have to book the boat in advance
The ride by boat takes 45 minutes
Once there make sure to do the guided KAYAK TOUR (or canoe) - It takes 3 Hours and it really worths, as you can see different types of animals 🛶
Try the restaurant Taylor's - If you Want a really nice (but quite expensive) dinner. It's the only dinner in the restaurant we did.
Watch the sunrise at the beach
2 DAYS IN LA FORTUNA
Tumblr media
The La Fortuna region has always been beautiful, but it has not always been this calm. On a clear day, the majestic Arenal Volcano can be seen looming over this peaceful town. La Fortuna’s history is intimately connected with the region’s volcano. Now dormant, there was a time when it was awake and ferocious! On the morning of July 29th, 1968, Arenal Volcano violently erupted — spewing ash, rocks, and gas for three consecutive days. As the smoke cleared, the villages of Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo, and San Luis were found buried under the debris, with 87 people dead.
Out of this tragedy, La Fortuna (The Fortune) was born as the central town in the Arenal Volcano area. The region has become a successful travel destination, and (like the whole of Costa Rica), is a champion of sustainability. As for Arenal Volcano, it’s now dormant, so you can enjoy its beauty up-close in the Arenal Volcano National Park without being in harm’s way.
Tumblr media
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT LA FORTUNA:
We stayed at ESSENCE AND SPA ARENAL, super cheap hostel but full of services: yoga, pool, laundry, spa and a delicious vegan cuisine
Make sure to try the HOT SPRINGS. There are also FREE hot Springs on the way to the hostel. Just 10 dollars for the car keepers are required
Walk around and hike the Volcano in the National Park 🌋
Try SODA MIMA and SODA LA COCINA DE MAMÁ. Soda are little trattorie, the best way to eat local, a lot and at a really good price - Skip restaurants!
2 DAYS IN MONTEVERDE
Monteverde is a small town in the mountain ranges of Costa Rica and a major destination for ecotourism in the country. About 3 hours from San Jose, it is one of our top recommended destinations in Costa Rica. Monteverde is the best place to experience a cloud forest. Cloud forests were given their name because you will see a thin veil of clouds just below the canopy. The clouds eventually dissipate into water on the leaves and drip down, watering the plants below. It is breathtaking to see from above.
The three main reserves that protect the sustainability of the cloud forest covered mountains in this part of Costa Rica are the Monteverde Reserve, the Santa Elena Reserve, and the Children’s Eternal Rainforest. A quarter of a million tourists from all over the world come here to explore these biodiverse highlands. There’s a total of 755 tree species there, which means, that one square mile, The Monteverde Cloud Forest can have more species of trees than the entire Unites States of America. Visit Monteverde to experience what Costa Rica is all about: incredible biodiversity and environmental preservation.
Tumblr media
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT MONTEVERDE:
We stayed at GREEN TREE B&B, an amazing tree house - a unique experience to try
The road to Monteverde is hard - make sure to have a 4x4
On the road to Monteverde you will drive along the LAKE ARENAL. Make sure to do a stop there!
The entrance to the BOSQUE NEBULOSE is 25 dollars - it's a lot but it really worths, as you can do different trails and walk the whole day☁☁
2 DAYS QUEPOS/UVITA
MANUEL ANTONIO
The magic of the beach and the greenery of the forest come together in one place, and the result is a natural paradise. Not in vain the Manuel Antonio National Park is the Protected Wild Area that receives the largest number of national and international tourists.
In addition to beaches, the Park offers a very humid tropical forest where species of flora and fauna in danger of extinction coexist, a mangrove, marine environments, islands and a lagoon of 14 hectares.
In a short trip you can cross several paths that will take you through a primary forest. You will also have stunning views of the sea and you can enjoy the wildlife that is possible to find at any time.
UVITA
Just 1 hour from Manuel Antonio, Uvita is a small town that is easy to get around as it has paved roads throughout. The town has the main entrance to the national park and the beach, there are several restaurants, info centers, tour companies and the cheap hostels and cabinas. For someone who isn’t renting a car, you can stay in town with no problem and be in walking distance to supermarkets, restaurants, the beach, etc.
Tumblr media
👉IT'S MUCH BETTER TO STAY IN UVITA THAN IN QUEPOS - less traffic, cheaper and less turists
Tumblr media
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT UVITA:
Stay at CASCADA VERDE HOSTEL, best hostel we've been in Costa Rica!
Go to Playa Uvita and Playa Hermosa - and watch the sunset from there ☀
Do the Dolphins and Whales Tour 🐬🐳
Eat a Palmito pizza in El Hornito Restaurant
2 DAYS CORCOVADO
Corcovado National Park is one of the most unique and biodiverse places on the planet and visiting the Peninsula is a real treat for the nature lover. It contains over five percent of the world’s animal population just within that small area, making it a popular ecotourism destination. For example, the national park is said to contain the entire ecosystem of insects that is found between Panama and Mexico. Additionally, National Geographic describes it as the “most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity.”
Corcovado National Park is the backpacking experience of a lifetime. It encompasses the only remaining old growth wet forests on the Pacific coast of Central America, and 13 major ecosystems including lowland rain forest, highland cloud forest, jolillo palm forest, and mangrove swamps, as well as coastal marine and beach habitats.
Tumblr media
There is a good chance of spotting some of Costa Rica’s shyest and most endangered inhabitants here; Baird’s Tapirs, Jaguars, Scarlet Macaws, Harpy Eagles, Red-backed squirrel monkeys and White-lipped Peccaries.
IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT CORCOVADO:
We Stayed at Baya Drake at Corcovado and DRAKE INN - super cheap, with bar, restaurant and swimming pool
Thanks to the hotel, we planned 1 day excursion in the Corcovado National Park. It costs 100 dollars per person but it really worths 🙏
You can arrive to Bahia Drake by boat or with a 4x4. By boat it takes 45 min and it costs 20 dollars
You can reach Corcovado only by boat! The ride is really hardcore - get ready!

WARNING LENGTHY FEEDBACK
♇ tarot reading feedback; number eight
♇ Hi Pluto,
♇ Happy New Year!
♇ Once again, thank you for the immaculate reading.
♇ I am not exaggerating in the least when I tell you it completely resonated like nothing I’ve ever read, hence my embarrassingly lengthy response.
♇ I’ve been reassuring myself on not feeling too badly as I believe that if I were a reader, I would be really interested to know how, if at all, my reading matches up to whatever is going on in a client’s life… right??
♇ I hope you’re bored because you’ll need to be ready for some serious waffling on my part! 😂
♇ I don’t discuss astrology or tarot (or any other related topics for that matter) with anyone in my life, so I have no one to spout some of this to— please don’t mind me 💀
♇ This was only my 2nd ever personal reading and I had already not planned on getting anymore as far as this topic is concerned even before receiving your reading, but now after having received it, I am glad to say that there would’ve never been a need as I now feel as if I’ve gotten all bases covered thanks to you.
♇ I generally tend to compare pac’s/genral readings more so to my astrological placements versus against other readings— for a number of reasons but mainly because my knowledge of astrology is more vast than that of tarot, and I believe it to be a better predictive tool than tarot, which tends to rely on current energies.
♇ However, I will share that the first paid reading which I received recently on this similar topic funnily enough married extremely closely to the one I received from you.
♇ Though, with all due respect to the other reader whom I still believe to be gifted as well, I found your reading to be more substantive and less generalised, and overall more aligned with my personal preferences.
Commonalities (b/w the 2 readings)
· Him having a lot to give and his generosity as a person
· Enjoying a particularly close connection and relationship with his family
· Outlining his prevalence and/or involvement in his community
· Astute nature and hard to take advantage of
· Valuing open communication
· Culturally inquisitive and a staunch believer in justice
· Highly observant and excellent at reading people
· High regard for values, morals and hard work
· Patient, intuitive and surprisingly nurturing
· Mention of defining past situation(s) with emotionally manipulative and duplicitous people
· A magnetic, intellectual, empathic yet authoritative and intimidating person
· Forward looking person
· Him playing an advisory role to me in future
· Being alarmingly attractive/appealing and abundant
♇ Further, other than having the reading resonate on a soul level— where I just knew everything I was reading was true and my usual skepticism was absent; there was also major correlation with relevant astrological placements I have.
♇ I was blown away by the amount of effort you put into my reading, before I even got into the content, the look of it alone had me excited for what was to come.
♇ I found the formatting and layout to be especially stellar and sophisticated.
♇ In terms of the actual reading itself, another point of excellence! You were able to offer an incredibly detailed and thoughtful reading.
♇ I tend to read most with a healthy grain of skepticism but yours was able to escape this habit of mine because of just how much it resonated, not necessarily because you were only telling me things I wanted to hear and/or only positives, but rather, because on a deeper level I intuitively felt what you were conveying to be true.
♇ I would 1 million percent recommend anyone get a reading from you and I definitely can say from now going forward, you will be the only reader I go to when I require a personal reading.
♇ Thanks Pluto! You are truly and marvelously talented. 🖤

A short vignette I wrote as part of a discussion on a forum I post on, with past/present tense and other grammar and formatting and math somewhat cleaned up from the rough version I posted there, and I’ve given it a title; it is a stand-alone piece and is not connected to any of my main SF settings; I took the liberty of re-using some relatively generic planet names and taking a little inspiration from John M. Dollan’s Arcbuilder Universe (if you’re interested you can find links to a little of John M. Dollan’s more recent writing on his Twitter):
----------
Advantages of Specialization
As I departed Cordillera, I passed a sign of the times. There was one of the big Hegemony freighters, on its leisurely upward fall toward minimum safe distance. It was much too far away for unaided eye visual contact, of course, but Mariposa's telescope gave me a fine view of it. And Cordillera space traffic control had supplied all the relevant details, of course; planned trajectory and burn timing, alpha-numeric designation - and a name; the Humbolt. Humbolts are whales that sing. Appropriate, I guess; it was big. Next to it little Mariposa would look - well, like a butterfly flitting around a whale, I guess. Mariposa is 50 meters long and masses 100 tons, 500 tons fueled up, with space for about an elephant's mass in cargo. Mariposa could fit inside Humbolt's fuel tank. Mariposa could fit inside the nozzle of Humbolt's fusion rocket.
Humbolt had finished its escape burn from Cordillera two days ago and it was just falling up now, not very fast. Its orbital rockets had burned at a leisurely .5 MSS, only a twentieth of a G, and hadn't burned very long. It hadn't even reached escape velocity from Cordillera's sun. Mariposa had burned hard, 3 G on the way up from Cordillera's surface, then 1.2 G the rest of the way to outbound flight velocity. Mariposa passed Humbolt quickly; the velocity differential was huge. Mariposa hadn't just reached escape velocity from the local sun, Mariposa had reached escape velocity from the galaxy! If I never burned her rocket or did a hyperspace jump again Mariposa would fall up very long and very far, into intergalactic space, where she'd fall up until her atoms evaporated by proton decay or the Big Rip tore her apart or she disintegrated from the slow sandpapering of the intergalactic medium, whatever came first. Of course, that wouldn't happen. I'd reach the local hyperlimit and jump to hyperspace in three months or so, then it'd be a few days in hyperspace, then another two months to get from the 82 Eridani hyperlimit to Hyannis. Funny; a few months to cross a few dozen AU, a few days in hyperspace to cross dozens of light years, a light year is more than 60,000 AU. Our-space distances aren't applicable to travel in hyperspace, of course, but I still think it's funny. Lots of people do.
As I passed Humbolt I studied telescopic images of it, studied its weaknesses, and thought maybe a whale wasn't the right analogy for it after all. Something from an ocean was, but not a whale. It was more like one of those deep sea fish that explode when you bring them to the surface, into the light.
Humbolt hadn't landed at San Ysidro Spaceport. It couldn't have. It wouldn't have survived trying. Humbolt is a pure creature of the void, that will never know the kiss of air or the touch of ground. It unloads and loads cargo at space stations, leaving transport to and from planetary surfaces to specialized local surface-orbit shuttles.
Humbolt is long thin pillar more than a kilometer long, with the fusion rocket at one end, a spherical fuel tank and the cargo and a small crew section spun for centrifugal gravity at the other end, and huge radiator wings between them. The long pillar is to protect the rest of the ship from the heat and radiation of the fusion drive. The fusion drive has a maximum rated acceleration at full cargo load of 2 MSS - one-fifth of 1 G. If Humbolt tried to accelerate much faster with a full cargo load, its engine would melt with waste heat. And if by some miracle it got itself up to 1 G that long pillar would snap and crumble. Put Humbolt on the surface of an Earthlike world, and it would disintegrate into a mass of rubble. If Humbolt tried to land like Mariposa, it would have the aerodynamics of a brick, and pieces of it would snap off from air friction, and its great rocket wouldn't have the thrust to control its own fall, and its own weight would break its back before it even touched the ground.
Maybe a whale isn't a bad analogy after all. The blue whale is the biggest animal to ever live on Earth; it's easier to be big in the water.
It's about efficiency, see. Humbolt should never experience a force of acceleration much above 2 MSS, so it's not built to take more than .5 G or so. That's a good safety margin, given the gentle acceleration its drive maxes out at. Building it fragile like this is efficient. Saves mass. Saves construction material. Saves fuel. Saves money.
It doesn't even really have a cargo hold. They just attach stuff to the front. Lots of different configurations are possible. On that trip Humbolt's front end was a greebled sphere of snapped-together rectangular cargo containers half a kilometer across, with a sort of tarp draped across it to protect it from high-velocity dust. There must have been hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo in that greebled sphere of cargo containers. It must have been a non-trivial fraction of Cordillera's yearly offworld trade. Cordillera isn't a big colony; it's a dusty dry world with only a few small seas, marginally habitable, only 160 million inhabitants. The sphere is the most efficient shape for a container, and the protective tarp is light, and Humbolt doesn't need to worry about streamlining. Trucks and trains and planes and boats and Mariposa are long and narrow because if you have to worry about streamlining you want to minimize frontal area. Humbolt doesn't have to worry about friction, so its cargo can be gathered into a sphere, which is efficient.
Free traders like me with ships that can take off and land like Mariposa are still a lifeline on Cordillera. Until a few years back Cordillera had just one orbiting space station to service big cargo ships like Humbolt. The Hegemony gave them another one a few years back though. Gave them another space station. A whole space station. Just dragged it in all the way from Alpha Centauri. The Hegemony must have plans for Cordillera.
Humbolt fell behind quickly. After they'd passed a few million kilometers behind they sent a text message telling me they were about to fire up the big fusion rocket. The burn timing was already registered with Cordillera space control who'd passed it on to me, of course; it was just standard procedure. The Hegemony were sticklers for this kind of thing. The contents of the message were very standard too; if it hadn't been composed by a computer it might as well have been. I wondered if it was AI composed or some sort of standardized form they had a human fill out. There'd be an audio warning and check-in too.
The audio warning was less standardized. A male voice, with an accent that might have been Tolimanish, saying, "This is the Kentauric Hegemony nationalized transport KDY-442-A74F, the Humbolt, calling free trader Mariposa. Hello, Miss, uh ... Miss Cherinise? Did I pronounce that right? Just as per standard procedure we're giving you a redundant warning that we're going to fire up the big atomic flashlight in 600 seconds. Please acknowledge."
Mariposa and Humbolt were almost seven light seconds apart at this point; far enough apart for light lag to noticeably influence conversation. I could have fired up the subspace radio, but Humbolt hadn't bothered, and I wasn't going to spend power on it if they weren't.
I sent back, "This is free trader Mariposa, I understand and acknowledge your message. I see we have the same destination. Does that make this a race? Seems to be going pretty well for me so far if so; I left after you and I'm already ahead of you."
I couldn't resist the dig, even though I knew it was lame and wasn't even an effective one, it just drew attention to my own weakness. I made it sound happy, like I was joking and saying something to have an excuse to talk to somebody for a few minutes.
The voice from the Humbolt said back, "You'd lose. Might want to make sure any un-hardened electronics are protected before we fire the big rocket, and maybe put your fuel tank between your crew and cargo compartments and us, just to be extra safe. You should be OK at that distance, but it's gonna be some real Manhattan Project hours out here when we fire. KDY-442-A74F over and out."
I said back, "Mariposa's been in battles and flare star megaflares and I've had to navigate more than one particularly nasty gas giant and brown dwarf magnetosphere. My ship's built tough, I'll be fine. Free trader Mariposa, over and out."
For some minutes Mariposa and Humbolt fell up away from Cordillera's sun, glowing only with the warmth of life support and radar and power reactor standby power and cargo environment maintenance. Then Humbolt's main rocket fired.
Mariposa can do 4 G at a steady burn, more in a sprint. The big limit is my own tolerance. Compared to Mariposa's muscular rocket, Humbolt's great rocket is weak in thrust. It imparts the gentlest of pushes. Humbolt's great radiator wings soon sizzle with heat at a fifth of a G. It ejects less than 200 kilograms of fuel per second, for a ship that masses hundreds of thousands of tons fueled and loaded. It's built for fuel efficiency, endurance, not thrust. The big rocket fires continuously for more than two weeks, compared to Mariposa's 22 hour 1.2 G burn.
And that efficiency implies its own sort of power. That 200 kilograms flies out of the rocket nozzle at more than two percent the speed of light. Humbolt's big rocket is a butterfly's sigh in terms of thrust, but in terms of energy it's a nuclear bomb that explodes continuously for more than two weeks. Ships like Humbolt have to maneuver near planets using weaker secondary orbital rockets because of the damage that storm of radiation and high-velocity charged particles might do. Alerts squawked nervously as Humbolt became a dark speck at the end a brilliant comet of charged particles and radiation thousands of kilometers long, the brightest thing in Mariposa's sky except for the local sun.
Mariposa uses not a lot of energy to eject a lot of fuel not very fast. This gives it the thrust to blast off the surface of a world. It's like one of those gasoline-powered SUVs you see on a lot of low-population worlds with big stretches of hostile terrain; go anywhere no matter how bad the road, power over rocks and through sucking mud puddles. But it's like an SUV; it guzzles fuel. And fuel-guzzling, in space, ultimately means slow. Humbolt uses terawatts of energy to eject a little fuel very fast, and this makes it fuel-efficient, and fuel-efficient in space ultimately means fast.
The man was right. If it's a race, Mariposa will lose, I'll lose. Humbolt will reach the hyperlimit of Cordillera's system in a little over a month, reach Hyannis in a little over two months, well ahead of me. And with ships like Humbolt the Hegemony can charge shipping prices half of the minimum I can charge to stay in business and come out with a 20% profit. And they can ship high-bulk goods that are just out of reach for me. Mariposa is a flying fuel tank with an engine and a crew quarter and a cargo compartment attached, stuffed into something shaped like a delta-winged aircraft. Humbolt gets almost three times my delta V while being less than half fuel by mass.
Free traders like me kept trade flowing through the age of fragmentation and economic contraction after the disintegration of the Terran Empire. Our tough versatile little blast off from anywhere land anywhere rockets were just what human space needed back then. But it's getting tough for somebody like me to stay in business nowadays.

Use of cannabis in medicine
Medical cannabis has strong anti-cancer properties and is made from single-origin EU-certified hemp plants that are specially bred for high CBD and low THC levels. These contain the two most important cannabinoids, CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which are responsible for the healing properties of cannabis and are among the main cannabinoids in the hemp plant.
Tumblr media
In some cases, a higher dose of THC may be required, but in general the medical community prefers CBD due to its lack of psychoactivity.
Synthetic drugs with cannabinoids
There are now some drugs for the treatment of cancer and their side effects, most of which are a combination of synthetic THC and CBD. The best known are Dronabinol® and Sativex®). These require a prescription and are partially covered by your health insurance.
What is cancer And how is it made?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. It is estimated that 9.6 million people worldwide died of cancer and its complications in 2018. Our cells are constantly multiplying to replace those lost through damage and natural cell death. If cells are destroyed, new ones are automatically formed to replace them. The older we get, the more often our cells have to divide. However, with each cell division, the cells lose “quality” and the risk increases that this process will be disturbed and the body begins to produce abnormal cells instead of intact cells. But other influences such as air pollution, unhealthy diet and radiation can also have a negative impact on cell division. Occasionally these abnormal cells mutate and become cancerous. Then they start replicating and spreading themselves. The spread of tumor-like cells is also called metastasis.
Tumblr media
What types of cancer are there?
Almost every organ of the body can be attacked by malignant tumor cells. The most popular types of cancer include:
• Prostate cancer
• Lung cancer
• Breast cancer
• Colon cancer
• Uterine cancer
• Cervical cancer
• Different types of skin cancers
• Leukemia
• Thyroid cancer
• Oral mucosal cancer
• Liver cell cancer
• Gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer
Which are the most common?
In 2001, around 210,000 people died in Germany as a result of cancer. Ascending trend. Cancer is the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.
While prostate cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer are the most common cancers in men, breast cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer are the most common in women.
At 56 percent, more men than women died from cancer in 2018 worldwide. Geographically, with a share of 26.9 percent of all cancer deaths, the main burden fell on China, ahead of Europe with a share of 21.4 percent.
Lung cancer is currently the most dangerous type of cancer.
  But how do tumors develop?
If you take a closer look at the formation of new cells, you will find that everything begins with DNA, including DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).
Our DNA is responsible for providing the blueprints for making the new cells. This is unique for every person. Every time a new cell is formed, the body refers to its individual structure. If the DNA is damaged, there may be complications in cell division and instead of healthy cells, defective or dysfunctional cells develop.
Two different types of tumors can develop from these dysfunctional cells.
A distinction is made between non-cancerous (benign) tumors and cancerous (malignant) tumors.
While benign tumor cells usually grow very slowly and are limited to one organ, malignant cells can develop at different speeds and affect other organs. Most of the time, such “scattering” occurs at an advanced stage, which makes both treatment and the chances of recovery difficult.
Research has shown that cancer cells have some kind of intelligence. They multiply continuously and sometimes form their own blood vessels to ensure the supply of nutrients during the energy-intensive growth process.
Some forms of tumors even develop a tolerance to chemotherapy drugs, making this treatment ineffective.
What is CBD and How Can It Help?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 100 different phytocannabinoids and, together with THC, is the most concentrated in cannabis. Unlike THC, it is not psychoactive and is now legal in almost the world. It is also well tolerated by humans and animals and, according to the WHO, is neither physically nor psychologically dependent.
Just like THC, CBD has the ability to affect the body's endocannabinoid system. This is primarily responsible for controlling hormone production (e.g. happiness hormones such as serotonin and dopamine) and other functions of the body.
In addition, researchers have found that CBD can have other positive effects on the human body.
It is said to help against inflammation and inflammation-related pain, epilepsy, schizophrenic psychoses, depression, stress, burnout, sleep disorders, migraines, nausea and vomiting.
That's all well and good, but what should CBD do against cancer?
2018 study proves effects of CBD in 92% of cancer patients
In 2018, a study on the treatment of various forms of cancer with cannabidiol was carried out on 119 cancer patients. Many of the patients already had metastases.
28 were treated exclusively with CBD. They received 10 mg CBD twice a day, in severe cases up to 30 mg twice. The intake was at least 6 months. Some of the patients had astonishing results, especially that of a five-year-old boy that stood out. He was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and had tried countless therapies, all of which were unsuccessful. During the therapy, the tumor mass shrank by 60%! This confirms the observations of numerous researchers that cannabis has an anti-cancer effect.
In 92% of the cases an effect of CBD could be determined during the study, however not all were cured and some participants also died.
CBD should not be viewed as a cure for cancer, but studies like this one show that therapy with CBD can be promising and the implementation of further studies gives hope for new therapeutic approaches. CBD should by no means be viewed as an alternative to conventional cancer therapy, but as a helpful support in the fight against cancer, as well as the frequent accompanying complaints and side effects of the medication.
How CBD can support you during and after cancer:
For side effects of cancer such as:
• Pain
• Sleep disorders
• Difficulty concentrating
• Depressions
• Stress
For side effects of chemotherapy drugs, e.g .:
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness / lack of strength
Cancer diagnosis: Hardly any news is so scary. Not only the illness itself, but also accompanying symptoms such as depression, stress, pain and sleep disorders cause problems for the patient. CBD can support you during the illness as well as with accompanying and sequelae.
Before cannabis can be viewed as a therapy against cancer, numerous further studies must certainly be carried out, as CBD and the other cannabinoids contained in cannabis, e.g. CBG (cannabigerol), CBC (cannabichromene) or CBN (cannabinol) have not been adequately researched.
It is now known that other cannabinoids can also have a direct influence on body and mind via the endocannabinoid system and that there is still a lot of potential dormant in them.

Close to the end of the year, and also when the semester ended, I looked forward in selling my books after finals so that I would get money back. I’d get a friend together to take me to Tower Records in Huntington. In a matter of one hour, that money would be gone. Right now I’d be very excited about what I would find in those bins. But due to the pandemic it hasn’t been the case and the euphoria of being in a store, any store at midnight, has been absent. During the mid-00′s, Tower Records went under and currently co-opting the former Huntington location is a third-rate clothing store.
One day as I was driving to work, people stood on the sidewalks of Route 110 holding picket signs like it was the end of the world. First advertised on those signs were 10%-30% percent off all merchandise at Tower. When passers-by and sidewalk shoppers took a closer look, they ended up in shock as they realized that it was an end of an era of some sort. A few days later, the stakes went up. 40%-60% discounts finally garnered Tower’s final audience and rush of shoppers. The final swan song came when all merchandise was down to a whopping 70%-90% percent off. That was when they had their biggest ever turnout because no one wanted to pay full price for music. (Not then when downloading broke, and still not now.) Music collectors and fans were reluctant to buy any new release or any title that was full price. Now they all jumped at the opportunity to clean out Tower’s shelves with a steal. Buyers hovered and tracked entire sections looking for that one shining crown jewel that made their lifetime.
As a music fan for years, I couldn’t begin to tell you how much Tower shaped my taste in music and style. Unlike FYE and Sam Goody, Tower was the one commercial music chain that had a lot of artists and titles that no other commercial store had. Think of what was the Port Jefferson Music Den (closed in 2002) where they were the one underground record store that had everything other stores didn’t even come close to carry. I remember summertimes visiting the Massapequa location picking up rare CD singles and imports as well as other rare hard-to-find and ahead-of-release-date CD’s and artists I picked up such as Autechre’s LP5 (1999) and EC8OR’s World Beaters (1998).
And being a fan of print media and graphic design, I also bought stacks of magazines every week. The magazine selection in Huntington was unrivaled, measuring at least several rows of 60-70 feet of anything and everything you could think of: Industrial Nation, Punk Planet, The Wire, Disruptiv, Mass Appeal, Mean, Vice, YRB, and art design magazines like LoDown, as well as hardcore zines Short Fast Loud!, Maximum Rock And Roll, Under The Volcano and other cult magazines I happened to be lucky to pick up (Lisa Carver’s Rollerderby, anyone?). Every month went at least $60.00-$70.00 total on magazines alone.
Yet towards the end of Tower’s presence I didn’t pick up on music as much because just like other buyers, I had to stand back at the higher-than-usual prices for releases. Compared to discount chains like Best Buy and other record stores, it wasn’t unusual to find a new release with no-frills to be priced at $19.99 or even $21.99. DVDs I noticed were priced at times to be five dollars higher than their competitors. Maybe some shoppers felt the same sentiment as I did.
Not only that, the forces of internet piracy and MP3 downloading of recent years proved to be too dominant and powerful to be stopped, and is currently but begrudgingly co-existing with other existing record stores this day and age. Consumers then re-routed the system right to their own bedrooms with no price to pay for their music. These factors, plus incurring debt that led the chain to bankruptcy proved to be too much for them.
Without Tower Records, it was less convenient for me to pick up whatever artist or movie title I wanted right away right after work. When Tower closed down it took a bite out of some of the physical record collecting I had. Yet, only they could have given me these experiences: no more magazines letting me know what the latest art direction was or who was in the spotlight. No more frantically walking around with a huge stack of everything and more in my hands still looking for one more CD. No more back room full of posters, sheet music, jazz, classical, hip-hop, techno, and soul. No more silly Hollywood memorabilia and comic-book fantasy merchandise. No more video games, no more characters hanging out in the store wearing goth, back-pack indie, or hardcore.
No more attitudes from the employees who treated customers like nothing because they felt like it. That was really the only problem I had with Tower Records, mostly in Huntington. The cashiers pointed people out with a huff and puff because they were given more than enough change or money, or how they rang up a transaction without even making an emotion or saying a word. Some stuck female cashiers had that flat out know-it-all act for no apparent reason. Sometimes I even renounced the shop because of its sometimes poor service, but that was not the case in the end as the attitude did improve, thank you.
And no more of where I had my first date with my Peruvian then-girlfriend. I would never forget wandering in that Huntington store looking for the next purchase when she walked in, greeting each other with open arms. We left when a thunderstorm knocked the power out but we returned after dinner and had a fun time, the first of many for months to come. This was also where I met a pretty pale Irish ginger who I later met again into at community college the following year.
What is now left of the record store scene on Long Island? A few of them which existed when Tower crumbled are still around (Cheapo’s, Looney Tunes, Infinity Records) and even new ones popped up (High Fidelity and Record Reserve to naming two). Some opened and either re-located (Record Stop) or said good-bye by the time you read this (Permanent Records and Vinyl Paradise). The majority of shops in total are still around because internet opinion made their case about the lack of quality, esthetics, art, and ritual of having the physical thing that you don’t get from digital or streaming; and the classic ritual and synesthesia of experiencing a record store and handling the format makes the case of cherishing these shops. On the online circuit, some titles are now being released in very limited quantity, mainly in the low thousands or even in the mere hundreds. It’s a huge drop-off from what the millions in print runs used to be. Naming your own price for digital downloads, streaming, or even buying from the label or artist directly is the way to go nowadays.
With my radio show, Omega WUSB, I do most of my music testing at home. My habits have been ruined by MP3s and streams as acquiring music is of very low cost and extremely ubiquitous. After all that, it hasn’t stopped me from going to record stores or celebrating Record Store Day to find breaks, samples, or dollar music to win it all. Yes, I still very much prefer to go out of town to buy music with my money which I support the artists and shops I like. Even to this day, I’ll be very happy spending $200.00-$250.00 on music just to have the artwork, colors, lyrics, pictures, ink, liner notes, credits, barcodes, and the entire release itself, because later on I will turn a profit in style points as time goes by, just like when people are hoarding and sharing their vinyl and cassette collections now.
That November was my last visit to Tower Records ever, a few months after getting a substantial check from a near-fatal car accident. Acquired would be some titles that made my pre-Omega shows and would be part of some personal seasonal mixtapes. Prices were 40% off on music and that was when I decided to go and treat myself. There comes a time when you just can’t wait and risk a good sale on music before they’re gone forever. The total spent on my last ever visit there was $200.00 on music and the Andy Warhol book at $75.00, originally $125.00 (have you ever carried a book so massive and so heavy?) I took my bags worth of music and magazines with me to the trunk of my car, never to return to the Tower Records experience again.
On another note, I’m still friends with M-Ro to this day, a former manager there. He moved on to become a lead of Hicksville’s Utopia further west before becoming a ticket broker at an independent movie house. He once had a show on WUSB and was a major figurehead and darling of the Long Island punk scene. You might also know his brother J-Ro, a master archivist who still has his own show with us and is known as a major record collector by practically everyone on the island.

For the first time this fall
You know they're there and serving some function, but it seems a frivolous use of time to really dive into the whys and wherefores. This is fine. Six Crazy Attempts to Geoengineer the Weather

Six Crazy Attempts to Geoengineer the Weather
As climate change churns up extreme weather, would-be geoengineers are proposing revolutionary new technologies to minimize the effects of global warming: Reflect sunlight into space with orbiting mirrors! Absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide with artificial trees! Bulk up sea ice by cooling it with giant pumps! Even proponents acknowledge that such extravagant measures would be risky, assuming they could be implemented. But tinkering with the planet’s thermostat isn’t an entirely new idea, as you can see from these past schemes-—all ingenious, some downright explosive-.
Battle Plan Soldiers had long observed that rain seemed to follow battles, and common wisdom attributed this apparent link to the smoke and noise caused by munitions. In August 1891, Robert Dyrenforth, a Washington patent lawyer and retired Union Army major, took this idea to its logical conclusion in the first government-funded effort to control the weather. Supplied with $7,000 from the U.S. Senate and armed with mortars, electrical kites and hydrogen balloons, Dyrenforth traveled to West Texas, where he attempted to create a downpour by setting off a series of loud explosions in the lower atmosphere. He took credit for the precipitation that fell several hours after each volley, but it may be that what Dyrenforth got right was just timing: The rainy season was due to start anyway.
Vineyard Defense For more than a century, farmers around the world have fired hail cannons at the sky to stave off icy precipitation that could destroy delicate crops. (The trend began in the 1890s, when one Austrian winegrower raised a small army to wage “war on the clouds.”) The tall conical devices are believed to disrupt the formation of hail by blasting shock waves every few seconds during a storm. While proof of their efficacy is anecdotal at best, hail cannons are still in use at vineyards from California to New Zealand.
Rainmakers In 1946, Vincent Schaefer, a General Electric chemist, discovered that dry ice—super-cooled solid carbon dioxide—could be used to create an artificial cloud full of tiny ice crystals. Further experimentation led to “seeding” clouds with dry ice, silver iodide or other chemicals dropped from an airplane to catalyze precipitation. Though cloud-seeding has not fulfilled all its promises, it is used to generate powder for ski areas and rainfall in the United Arab Emirates, where up to 15 percent of annual precipitation is man-made.
In the Shade
In 1989, James Early, a California engineer, proposed going to the Moon to assemble a glass parasol more than 1,200 miles across that would be launched into space to deflect solar radiation. Other experts have made similar suggestions, including an enormous orbiting mirror or a cloud of millions of umbrella-like spacecraft floating between the Earth and the Sun.
Blazing Away James Espy, a 19th-century schoolteacher known as “the Storm King,” made contributions to the study of cyclones. But he never secured permission to test his most audacious idea: setting massive forest fires to regulate the continent’s weather. The heat from weekly blazes in the Rocky and Appalachian mountains, he argued in 1845, would ensure that “it will rain enough and not too much… and the health and happiness of the citizens will be much promoted.”
Weaponizing Weather “Operation Popeye” was a classified U.S. program that deployed cloud-seeding during the Vietnam War. The aim was to hinder North Vietnamese troops and suppress anti-aircraft fire. Whether the program worked remains in question. But after it became public, in 1972, it prompted a congressional investigation and, eventually, a United Nations treaty forbidding military action intended to cause “earthquakes, tsunamis [or] changes in weather patterns.”

Dear Hwang Hyunjin,
After some thinking, I decided that this toxic relationship needed closure.
Proper closure.
Okay, actually, it was my boyfriend who decided that I needed closure. I thought it was the stupidest idea anyone’s ever come up with, but in the end, I caved.
I swear I’m not trying to trash you or become the clingy ex-girlfriend that nobody likes, or trying to talk shit about the things you’ve done.
I just wanted to get these words off my chest, to say them to you.
I’ll never forget how you came up to me on the first day of uni, how nervous you looked, how scared you seemed. You asked to sit next to me, and from then, a pretty great relationship (well, until it crashed and failed).
“Hi, is anyone sitting here?” A boy gave you a small smile. Glancing up, you smiled and shook your head, inviting him to sit down.
“I’m (Y/N).”
“I’m Hyunjin.”
I’ll never forget how you looked past my weird attitude on our first date.
“God, I’m so sorry.” Grabbing a napkin, you began to furiously wipe at the brown coffee stain on his shirt.
Laughing, Hyunjin pushed your hand away from his shirt, held it in his own, and wiped the stain himself. “It’s okay.”
I’ll never forget our first kiss.
Tilting your neck, you peered up into Hyunjin’s eyes. “Thank you for taking me out.” Stepping closer to you, he smiled, showing off his infamous grin.
“I’d be happy to go out with you again.” Slinging his arms around your waist, he swooped down to place a peck on your lips. “See you tomorrow.”
He kissed you again and left you standing in front of your door with a starry eyed look.
I’ll never forget how we weren’t just dating, but we were more. I called you my boyfriend and you called me your girlfriend, and no one questioned it.
“Who’s that?” Jisung pointed his chin in your direction after too many (not so) discrete stares at each other.
Giving him a dazed look, Hyunjin turned his eyes back to you and smiled. “That’s my girlfriend.”
I’ll never forget the first time you said ‘I love you.’
Twirling around the living room with a mop, you laughed as Hyunjin slid around on a towel.
“What exactly is it that you’re doing?”
“I’m helping you clean.”
Suppressing your smile, you listened to the light music playing in the background. “Really? That’s real nice of you.”
“It’s my job as your boyfriend. Along with loving you of course.”
“What?”
“I love you.”
I’ll never forget any time you said ‘I love you.’
You and Hyunjin lay on the sofa, you trapped between his body and the back cushion.
“You’re really cute.” Your cheeks turned a light shade of pink as you buried your face into his chest. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
I’ll never forget how every moment I spent with you, you somehow managed to make my day brighter. .
Trudging down the halls of your apartment building, you lugged the textbooks and countless of assignments your professors has thrown at you.
“Boo!” Hands suddenly found their in front of your eyes. Grinning at the warmth, you found yourself sinking into his embrace, dropping the bags you held.
“Welcome back.”
I’ll also never forget our first real fight after you kissed that Soojin at the Christmas party.
“Don’t misunderstand it, it was nothing.”
“I saw you kiss her! Don’t lie to me!”
“I’m not lying to you! Goddamnit, listen to me for once in your life!” Your glare pierced his soul, and realizing the words that escaped his lips, he stopped, tucking his shoulders into his body as if he could fold himself into a small ball.
“I’ll see you at home.”
How we spent the night in bed, both faced away from each other.
“Still not gonna talk to me?” Hyunjin stared at your back, desperation laced in his voice, silently begging you to turn away from the wall.
“Hm.” You still didn’t budge. He sighed, sitting on the bed and brushing your hair away from your bare shoulder to plant a kiss there.
“I love you. Don’t forget that.”
And I’ll never forget how you started drifting away from me when you suddenly changed your major halfway through our second year.
“I switched to fine arts. With Soojin, you know her.”
“Oh, you dropped business?”
“I just said that. Anyway, we already have a project due soon.”
“We?”
“Me and Soojin. See you later. I love you.”
I’ll never forget how seeing each other every day turned into seeing each other once a week.
“Hyunjin, are you coming home tonight?”
“No, sorry. Me and Soojin have a really important thing to do tonight.
“But-”
“I’m sorry, babe, but it’s celebrating getting a 93 percent on our final. I’ll see you,” The line went dead.
“But… it’s our anniversary.”
How talking all the time turned into talking only when needed.
“Hey, do you wanna go out for dinner tonight?” He didn’t notice the desperation in your tone.
“Ah, I’m busy. I can’t,” Hyunjin smiled, albeit slightly forced. On his way out the door he picked up his phone, saying the name you were starting to despise. “Soojin? Yeah, I’m almost there.”
When texting every hour turned into texts being unanswered.
Sender: (Y/N)
Receiver: Hyunjin
Hey, you didn’t answer my texts. Are we still up for our date tonight?”
Sender: Hyunjin
Receiver: (Y/N)
I’m busy. Sorry.
When cuddling every night turned into your side of the bed being cold and empty almost every single damn night.
You pulled the covers closer to your body, tears staining your face as you stared at the door, waiting for it to open, and for him to come home.
He never did.
How waking up to your face turned into a loud, blaring alarm.
You opened your eyes to the loud screeching of the alarm, the lingering scent of Hyunjin’s cologne left on his pillow, indicating that he was there sometime throughout the night.
But he still didn’t wake up with you.
When eating dinner together every evening turned into uneaten food, wrapped and placed in the fridge.
Cooking for him never brought a smile to your face like it used to. Your food was turning bland, getting simpler with smaller portions. Your face was always kept straight as you stuffed a few spoonfuls of food into your mouth, the taste you longed for no longer there. His plate would be wrapped away and stored away into the fridge.
Yours was dumped into the trash.
How over-exaggerated paragraphs turned into one or two word sentences.
“Will I see you tonight?”
“No,” and he just left.
How “I love you” was directed to her, and not me.
You sat on the couch, motionless as you watched Hyunjin open the door back to the apartment. His smile was wide and his face was practically glowing. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Soojin. Love you, take care,” he walked into the room, closing the door behind him.
Never glancing at you.
How you strung me along for a few months, making me believe you still loved me while everyone around me knew that it was her you were dating.
“Who’s that?” Jisung asked after Soojin just left, but not before hugging Hyunjin and pecking him on the cheek.
“She’s my girlfriend.”
“And (Y/N)?”
Hyunjin shrugged.
I’ll never forget how stupid I felt when I saw your texts to her, completely disregarding me and everything we’ve been through. For her.
Sender: Soojin
Receiver: Hyunjin
Are u with (Y/N)? Wanna come over?
Sender: Soojin
Receiver: Hyunjin
I can cancel I’ll be over soon.
I’ll never forget the pain you put me through, Hwang Hyunjin. People told not to fall for your charms, because underneath that is so much more. Thinking back, I was the most stubborn person alive, and I stupidly decided to ignore them, because I believed that you would change for me.
I was wrong, and I almost lost myself in our relationship.
Surprisingly, the person that I least expected took me to his hometown. He showed me his roots, where he grew up, how he grew up, the little cafe his parents own, his childhood bedroom. He wasn’t afraid to love me for who I am, to show me off. He helped me find myself when I was incapable of doing it alone. He showed me that I am worth it.
More importantly, he showed me that you’re everything I can live my life without.
Now, you might be wondering what the point of this letter is, but the truth is: you lost something great.
Do whatever you like with the people you want, but trust me. Eventually? You’re going to realize you want it all back.
You’ll want to see me everyday, like he does.
“Hey, come here.” his voice was low and slurred, full or grogginess seeing as how he just woke up. Moving into the living room from the kitchen, you sat yourself on the arm of the couch, raking your hands through his, currently, platinum blonde hair. Curling himself back up, he pressed his face against your thigh, dozing off to the feeling of your fingers running through his scalp.
You’ll want to talk to me every hour of the day, like he does.
“(Y/N)?” you were walking through the campus gripping tightly onto his hand, looking for places you haven’t been before, which was probably over half the campus.
“Hm?”
“Did you know that the sun is 93 million miles away from us?”
You’ll want my texts, the one he gets.
Sender: (Y/N)
Receiver: My Love
Make sure to eat!!!!
Sender: My Love
Receiver: (Y/N)
You too! I’ll be home at 6
You’ll want my cuddles, the ones you missed out on.
Feeling your body being pulled back to someone’s chest, you rose an eyebrow to him, despite him not being able to see you. Turning yourself around, you buried your face into the crook of his neck, feeling him nuzzle his nose into your hair. He exhaled, loving the feeling of you wrapped up in his arms.
You could stay like this forever.
You’ll want to wake up to my face, the view he gets every morning.
You woke up to someone stroking your face and hair being moved away from your neck. Opening your eyes, you stared up lovingly at him, cuddling more into his touch.
“Good morning.”
You’ll want how I made dinner for you everyday, like I do for him.
“Is that clay pot chicken rice?” his deep voice rumbled throughout the room, barey rising over the sizzling of food on the stove. Turning around, you beamed at him, smile making his whole day.
“Yeah! Your favorite, then we can go watch a movie or go to your studio or something.”
Smiling, he walked over to you and slung his arms around your waist, kissing your neck. “I’d like that very much.”
You’ll want my long, over-exaggerated paragraphs, like he gets.
Sender: (Y/N)
Receiver: My Love
Remember to eat okay? I might show up late tonight, so make sure you get some rest and keep yourself hydrated, AND DON’T HOLE YOURSELF UP IN THE STUDIO. I’ll have someone watching you, okay? Since I probably won’t see my beautiful, sexy, handsome, boyfriend til late tonight or tomorrow, I hope you can feel my love through this! Love you!!!!!
Sender: My Love
Receiver: (Y/N)
Okay! Don’t overwork yourself and don’t spend the whole night working on your essay. Love you see you tonight
You’ll want my hugs, like he gets.
Deeply inhaling his scent, you shuddered when a hand came around you to rest on your back. Attempting to pull yourself back, you found yourself being brought closer to his chest, a deep whine rumbling from his chest.
“Just a few minutes.”
You’ll want my kisses, like he gets.
Pulling him against you, you grinned when he placed his lips against yours. Trailing away from your mouth, his lips placed gentle kisses along your cheeks to your jawline.
“That tickles!”
“I don’t care.” Only to continue pressing kisses to your skin.
You’ll want me to say “I love you,”  like how he hears it.
“Hey.”
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
Hell, you’ll want my love, how he has it.
“I don’t know what I’d do without you, honestly.” your voice was slightly muffled, due to the fact that your scarf was pulled up to your mouth.
“I don’t know what you’d do without me either.”
“Hey-”
“But I’m happy you’re here. I love you.”
“I love you too, Chan.”
You’ll want me.
But when the time comes, you will always be too late.
I’ll never be yours again.
And trust me, you’ll want everything back.
From,
(L/N) (Y/N)

Finding the Happy Medium of Black Holes
NASA - Chandra X-ray Observatory patch. Aug. 10, 2018 Scientists have taken major steps in their hunt to find black holes that are neither very small nor extremely large. Finding these elusive intermediate-mass black holes could help astronomers better understand what the "seeds" for the largest black holes in the early Universe were. The new research comes from two separate studies, each using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes.
Image above: The COSMOS Legacy Survey shows data that have provided evidence for the existence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). Image Credits: X-ray: NASA/CXC/ICE/M.Mezcua et al.; Infrared: NASA/JPL-Caltech; Illustration: NASA/CXC/A.Hobart. Black holes that contain between about one hundred and several hundred thousand times the mass of the Sun are called "intermediate mass" black holes, or IMBHs. This is because their mass places them in between the well-documented and frequently-studied "stellar mass" black holes on one end of the mass scale and the "supermassive black holes" found in the central regions of massive galaxies on the other. While several tantalizing possible IMBHs have been reported in recent years, astronomers are still trying to determine how common they are and what their properties teach us about the formation of the first supermassive black holes. One team of researchers used a large campaign called the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey to study dwarf galaxies, which contain less than one percent the amount of mass in stars as our Milky Way does. (COSMOS is an abbreviation of Cosmic Evolution Survey.) The characterization of these galaxies was enabled by the rich dataset available for the COSMOS field at different wavelengths, including data from NASA and ESA telescopes. The Chandra data were crucial for this search because a bright, point-like source of X-ray emission near the center of a galaxy is a telltale sign of the presence of a black hole. The X-rays are produced by gas heated to millions of degrees by the enormous gravitational and magnetic forces near the black hole. "We may have found that dwarf galaxies are a haven for these missing middleweight black holes," said Mar Mezcua of the Institute of Space Sciences in Spain who led one of the studies. "We didn't just find a handful of IMBHs — we may have found dozens." Her team identified forty growing black holes in dwarf galaxies. Twelve of them are located at distances more than five billion light years from Earth and the most distant is 10.9 billion light years away, the most distant growing black hole in a dwarf galaxy ever seen. One of the dwarf galaxies is the least massive galaxy found to host a growing black hole in its center. Most of these sources are likely IMBHs with masses that are about ten thousand to a hundred thousand times that of the Sun. One crucial result of this research is that the fraction of galaxies containing growing black holes is smaller for less massive galaxies than for their more massive counterparts. A second team led by Igor Chilingarian of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Mass., found a separate, important sample of possible IMBHs in galaxies that are closer to us. In their sample, the most distant IMBH candidate is about 2.8 billion light years from Earth and about 90% of the IMBH candidates they discovered are no more than 1.3 billion light years away. With data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), Chilingarian and his colleagues found galaxies with the optical light signature of growing black holes and then estimated their mass. They selected 305 galaxies with properties that suggested a black hole with a mass less than 300,000 times that of the Sun was lurking in the central regions of each of these galaxies. Only 18 members of this list contained high quality X-ray observations that would allow confirmation that the sources are black holes. Detections with Chandra and with XMM-Newton were obtained for ten sources, showing that about half of the 305 IMBH candidates are likely to be valid IMBHs. The masses for the ten sources detected with X-ray observations were determined to be between 40,000 and 300,000 times the mass of the Sun.

"This is the largest sample of intermediate mass black holes ever found," said Chilingarian. "This black hole bounty can be used to address one of the biggest mysteries in astrophysics." IMBHs may be able to explain how the very biggest black holes, the supermassive ones, were able to form so quickly after the Big Bang. One leading explanation is that supermassive black holes grow over time from smaller black holes "seeds" containing about a hundred times the Sun's mass. Some of these seeds should merge to form IMBHs. Another explanation is that they form very quickly from the collapse of a giant cloud of gas with a mass equal to hundreds of thousands of times that of the Sun. Mezcua and her team may be seeing evidence in favor of the direct collapse idea, because this theory predicts that the less massive galaxies in their sample should be less likely to contain IMBHs. "Our evidence is only circumstantial because it's possible that the IMBHs are just as common in the smaller galaxies but they're not consuming enough matter to be detected as X-ray sources", says Mezcua's co-author Francesca Civano of the CfA. Chilingarian's team has a different conclusion. "We're arguing that just the presence of intermediate mass black holes in the mass range we detected suggests that smaller black holes with masses of about a hundred Suns exist," says Chilingarian's co-author Ivan Yu. Katkov of Moscow State University in Russia. "These smaller black holes could be the seeds for the formation of supermassive black holes." Another possibility is that both mechanisms actually occur. Both teams agree that to make firm conclusions much larger samples of black holes are needed using data from future satellites. The Storm of Echoes: A Book Review
The Storm of Echoes is the fourth and final (supposedly) book of The Mirror Visitor Series, and it gives all the answers and raises just as many questions. We pick up with Thorn and Ophelia still on Babel trying to find Eulalia and the Other and stop the arks from disappearing into the void. But what we learn is truly happening to the arks and who Eulalia A.K.A God is, throws me for a loop. Definitely not twists I could have foreseen, which made me love the book even more. But the way it ends, I am not thrilled with because it leaves it wide open for another series, at least another book for sure. But as far as I know this is the last book in the series. But it leaves so many questions unanswered.
SPOILER PART OF THE REVIEW
First of all, WHY did she have to do Thorn like that! Lost in limbo basically- either dead or alive. Just there? After all that they went through- all Thorn went through, that's how he ended up? And we didn’t even really get closure for that because literally the last page of the book is Ophelia plunging through another mirror to go save Thorn AND THEN IT ENDS. I want to know what is killing Archibald and how the merging of the old and the new worlds go and what happens to the family spirits for the time God wrote them as “normal” until the ink fades? I LOVED this book and this series! I hope that there is another book to at least answer what the heck happens to Thorn and Ophelia!
I would a thousand percent recommend this book, which also means I highly recommend the entire series. The worlds are beautiful and harsh at the same time and Opheila as a character is written so well! I fell in love with her and her journey. It takes a lot for me to get invested into a story and its characters and felt like a piece of me ended with the last page (dramatic, I know, but accurate). And this book did it. I was upset, mad, sad and happy in all four books, and the author came across a language barrier to bring this story to millions, and I am so glad she did! Please run, don’t walk, to grab this series! The books in order are:
A Winter’s Promise
The Missing of Clairdelune
The Memory of Babel
The Storm of Echoes
I do want to talk about my favorite quote, with a different format this time,
“You represent no one.” - everyone.
At one point in the book in the ending, everyone on Babel is saying this. And everyone is trying to distract the Other. They all shout this, they all say it repeatedly, trying to take away the power the Other has given himself. It just showed me the power a mass can have or give to someone- or take it away at the same time. It was just a powerful image in my head while reading it.
My rating 4 out of 5 stars

FINDING THE HAPPY MEDIUM OF BLACK HOLES Scientists have taken major steps in their hunt to find black holes that are neither very small nor extremely large. Finding these elusive intermediate-mass black holes could help astronomers better understand what the "seeds" for the largest black holes in the early universe were. The new research comes from two separate studies, each using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes. "We didn't just find a handful of IMBHs -- we may have found dozens." Her team identified forty growing black holes in dwarf galaxies. Twelve of them are located at distances more than five billion light-years from Earth and the most distant is 10.9 billion light-years away, the most distant growing black hole in a dwarf galaxy ever seen. In their sample, the most distant IMBH candidate is about 2.8 billion light-years from Earth and about 90% of the IMBH candidates they discovered are no more than 1.3 billion light-years away. Detections with Chandra and with XMM-Newton were obtained for 10 sources, showing that about half of the 305 IMBH candidates are likely to be valid IMBHs. The masses for the 10 sources detected with X-ray observations were determined to be between 40,000 and 300,000 times the mass of the Sun. "Our evidence is only circumstantial because it's possible that the IMBHs are just as common in the smaller galaxies but they're not consuming enough matter to be detected as X-ray sources," says Mezcua's co-author Francesca Civano of the CfA. IMAGE....This image shows data from a massive observing campaign that includes NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. These Chandra data have provided strong evidence for the existence of so-called intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). Combined with a separate study also using Chandra data, these results may allow astronomers to better understand how the very largest black holes in the early Universe formed
