“For the record, I think you two being here is super weird.”
Upon hearing that Robin had a beautiful cousin--you--Steve and Eddie decided to accompany her to the airport to pick you up. She was standing at the baggage claim, Steve on her right and Eddie on her left, both fidgeting excitedly.
“You’re not gonna think it’s weird when she falls in love with me,” Steve argued.
“Or me,” Eddie added. “You can’t win every battle, Harrington. That movie star smile’s got to be a dud on some women. I just hope one of them is Y/N.” He said your name dreamily.
“You guys don’t even know anything about her,” Robin snorted, crossing her arms.
“That’s what the ride back to Hawkins is for,” Eddie said. “We get in the car, we offer to let her choose the music--”
“We let her choose who to sit by in the car--” Steve continued.
“She’s sitting in the front with me. You losers are in the back.”
“Aw, come on--”
“Robin!”
You were waving wildly to your cousin as she spied you and ran to you, hugging you tightly. You laughed a bit as you swayed back and forth. Robin was always your favorite cousin; she was the only one remotely near your age. You decided to visit her at the start of your summer break, then you’d get home… eventually.
“Gosh, it’s so great to see you, Rob!” you exclaimed, breaking the hug. “You look amazing, I love what you’ve done with your hair!”
“She likes hair, you hear that, Munson?” Steve whispered, nudging Eddie’s side.
“You really think your hair is better than mine?” Eddie whispered back.
“It’s great to see you too!” Robin replied, speaking loudly to mask her friends’ banter. “How was your flight?”
“It was okay, a little cramped, so I’m glad to be off it! How long is the car ride home?”
“Less than an hour, but it’s going to feel longer,” Robin groaned. “You can thank the two weirdos behind me for that.”
You peered behind Robin to see the two boys suddenly stop fidgeting and smile goofily at you.
“Steve Harrington,” he extended his hand. “It’s Y/N, right?”
“Yep,” you said, shaking his hand. “Nice to meet you Steve, I’ve heard lots about you from Robin.”
“So you have,” Steve smirked, looking back at Eddie, who scoffed. “I’m hoping it’s all been good.”
“Oh sure, but you’re much better-looking in person.”
Steve blushed madly, laughing a bit.
“Robin told me you’re a fan of flattery,” you smiled, making Steve a little nervous. “Don’t worry, I meant what I said! And I also want to say thanks for taking care of my little Rob. She needs it!”
“Anytime.” Steve met your eyes and smiled, making you blush a bit.
“I’m Eddie Munson,” he stepped in, breaking your eye contact with Steve, “it is an absolute pleasure to meet a beauty such as yourself.”
“Oh wow,” you chuckled, shaking his hand. “I haven’t heard about you before Eddie, but now I feel like I should have!”
“I have that effect on people,” he winked. “I’m a new friend of Robin’s, so I’m not surprised you haven’t heard of me, but I hope we can get to know one another this trip.”
“Absolutely, I’d love that, Eddie,” you smiled, then glanced down at his shirt. “Oh my gosh, are you a Metallica fan?”
Eddie’s eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open a bit.
“Are you?”
“Oh dear,” Robin sighed as she looked at Steve. “Sorry, bud, I forgot to mention. She’s a bit of a metalhead.”
Steve looked at your excited face in horror.
“Of course I am, they’re amazing! I’m staying here until their concert in Fort Wayne!” you exclaimed, smiling widely.
“Oh man, you’re so lucky, I couldn’t get a ticket in time!” Eddie said.
“Come with me!” you said, grabbing his arms. “I had an extra ticket, but it turns out Robin hates them, so it’s yours if you want it!”
“Are you serious?” Eddie grabbed on to your arms too. “That would be awesome, I’d love to go with you, thank you!”
You pulled Eddie into your arms and hugged him tightly, bouncing a bit. Steve felt absolutely devastated as he saw your smile. Robin, noticing, called out to you both.
“Alright, let’s get moving you guys!” she called.
“Right, sorry!” you said, grabbing your bags, but Steve grabbed them before you.
“I got it, no worries,” he smiled.
“Aw, are you sure you’ve got it, Steve? I don’t mind,” you said, but he shook his head.
“I don’t mind at all, really.”
“Well, thank you, Steve, you’re very sweet,” you smiled, rubbing his arm, then turned to Eddie.
“Dude, I think you’re already my best friend,” you said, then started telling him the details of your seats.
“What are you smiling about, goofy?” Robin snorted at Steve.
“Friend. She called him her friend,” he smirked, his posture perking up as you all left the airport.

Eddie stole.
Not very often, but it would happen quickly. Sometimes even he didn’t notice. It started when he was little. His dad had started him in kindergarten, practicing shoplifting and such.
When he got a little older (around nine when he started learning to hot-wire cars) he would steal bigger things; notebooks from his classmates, confiscated toys for his friends, groceries. Afterwords he would always feel a knot of guilt in his stomach. He would repeat what his dad had always told him in his head as a mantra: “take advantage of the world before it takes advantage of you.”
In the next few years he developed a set of rules for himself: don’t take from someone who needs it, don’t take from individual people, only take things you need. He’d justify taking that candy bar when his stomach hurt from hunger by reasoning it was a large company who wouldn’t miss anything. He only stole to survive.
Then he moved in with Uncle Wayne. They didn’t have a lot, but Eddie wasn’t as hungry as he used to be. Wayne tried to gently guide him through high school, teaching him new values. One time Eddie had stolen a jar of peanut butter for their lunches. Wayne came home and asked where it had come from. Eddie didn’t know what to say, no one had ever asked him where the groceries came from. It had always been strictly don’t ask don’t tell. Eddie had felt so embarrassed and ashamed that he never tried it again. That night Wayne sat him down to tell him that they were fine, they’d always have food on the table and enough for treats every now and again.
Eddie fought hard to break the habit, but he did teach himself not to pick up things, even small objects like pens or coins. It was difficult.
By the time he was redoing senior year Eddie hadn’t stole anything in a long time, didn’t even think to. That is, until he and Steve sat in the camper after stocking up on weapons. Steve had gotten a pack of gum (nervous habit) and popped a piece in his mouth. When Steve looked away, Eddie watched the other man’s jaw work as he chewed and gum and reached over subtly to take a piece from the package, wanting to know what Harrington’s mouth tasted like right then.

“I can’t believe you finally have your license, Rob.”
“Oh, I don’t,” she frowned at you. “I’ve got a permit though! And this is also Steve’s car,” she continued, looking down at the BMW.
“So, I guess you should be up front then, huh Harrington?” Eddie smiled. “You know, to guide Robin--”
“Oh, she’ll be fine with Y/N in front--”
“Make sure she doesn’t wreck your baby?”
“It would actually be helpful, Steve,” Robin said, half-serious and half playing around for the fun of it. “I haven’t driven without you yet.”
Steve’s jaw tensed up. You saw him glance over at you, and you gave him a weak smile, which he returned with a sigh.
“Fine.”
Eddie opened the car door for you as you scooted in behind Robin’s seat. As Robin muttered to herself about mirror positions and if it was 10-and-2 or 11-and-3, Eddie asked you some small questions about your flight. Steve got in and looked back at you, giving you a more confident smile, but was then jolted by Robin peeling out of the parking lot.
“Robin!” he yelled, seizing the handle above the window.
“Sorry, sorry!” she apologized, “that was an accident.”
“It was sort of a rush,” Eddie shrugged, making you giggle. Steve looked back at him incredulously, smoothing his hair.
“Yeah, sure, cuz it’s not your car!” he gasped. “How would you feel if Robin played your guitar with sandpaper?”
“It was not that bad!” Robin argued, cheeks reddening. You patted her shoulder consolingly.
“It wasn’t, and like you said, it was an accident, I’m sorry for freaking,” Steve said, collecting his calm.
“Thanks Steve, but I’m still sorry. For the record, Eddie, this is exactly why I’ve never touched your guitar.”
“I appreciate that,” Eddie smiled.
“That’s cool that you play guitar,” you said, turning to him.
“Oh, thanks! I’m actually in a band, Corroded Coffin.”
“No way! Metal?”
“You know it,” he smirked. “We’re playing this weekend, wanna come?”
“Absolutely!” You smiled brightly. “Steve, do you wanna come too?”
Eddie’s face went pale as Steve turned around, beaming.
“I would love to, Y/N! Thank you so much for inviting me. What night are you playing, Eddie?”
“Friday night.”
“This Friday night?”
“Yup.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Y/N, but I have to work that night.” Steve looked dejected, but Eddie’s face began brightening again.
“Bummer! But it’s alright, we can find another time to hang out,” you smiled softly, then looked out the window. As you did so, the boys had a silent bicker-fight. As you turned around, Steve was swatting at Eddie.
“Everything okay?” you asked them.
“Like I said, they’re weirdos,” Robin commented.
***
“We’re home!”
You looked at the Buckley house in front of you, and you sighed in relief. Robin’s house was the main source of your happy childhood memories, like running around in the sprinklers, playing with each other’s hair, and staying up late telling each other ghost stories. You loved spending your summers here.
“It feels so nice to be back,” you smiled as you exited the car, stretching.
“Mom’s going to be so happy to see you,” Robin smiled back. “But she won’t be home from work for a bit. We can settle you in, but I also have to run to my shift at the Video Store in about an hour. I’m sorry, I couldn’t get out of it.”
“No worries, I can find something to do,” you replied. “Hey, could I come to work with you, or is that totally against the rules?”
“You can come, it just might be boring,” Robin shrugged.
“I’ve got cards! We can play and talk when there aren’t any customers.”
“That sounds good to me! We can leave Steve to deal with the customers.”
“You work with Robin still?” you asked, maybe a little more enthusiastically than you intended.
“Yeah, the family that scoops together stays together, I guess,” Steve chuckled. “Gosh, sorry, that was cheesy.”
“No, it was cute,” you giggled, crinkling your nose. “Eddie, do you work?”
“Yeah, I work with my uncle,” he scratched his head. “It’s more of a labor type of job, so it’s hard, but it pays the bills… sort of. It’s been better having two incomes since my uncle is still well and working and I just graduated… finally. But that’s more than you need to know,” he smiled, trying to laugh off the vulnerable moment.
“It sounds like rewarding work, Eddie,” you smiled, bumping his arm. “Good for you.”
“Thanks,” he smiled, a hint of a blush peeking out. “Alright,” he said, gaining more confidence, “let’s get you settled in, m’lady!”
Eddie grabbed your bags this time and lugged them up the stairs, despite your and Steve’s protests. The guest room was ready for you, and your side of the bathroom was empty and ready for your things. You were staying for over two months, so you wanted to load your things into the empty dresser drawers to keep yourself organized. Robin stayed with you, plopped on your bed, talking about what had been happening recently in her life, specifically graduating. The boys, however, were having a less-than-pleasant conversation downstairs.
“Okay, she’s clearly more interested in me,” Eddie whisper-yelled. “I mean, she’s a Metallica fan and she invited me to their concert within the first minute of knowing me, for crying out loud!”
“That may be true, but we definitely made an instant connection,” Steve argued. “And she called you her friend, while she called me good-looking.”
“Whatever, man, let’s just admit we both have a shot, but if we both ask her out right now, I think she’ll say no to both of us.”
“Yeah, Robin told me she’s really sweet but takes more time when it comes to dating. We’d have to get to know her more before she even thinks of us the way we think of her… She sure is pretty though,” he looked at Eddie, who nodded solemnly.
“She sure is…” he looked into the distance, a crooked smile breaking through.
“Dude,” Steve said, snapping Eddie back.
“Sorry,” Eddie shook his head. “Okay, neither of us are going to ask her out yet. Let’s just build friendships and try not to be jealous of each other. Sound good?”
“I guess,” Steve sighed. “I just really feel like she’s--”
“Ready for work, Steve?”

There's something so absolutely juicy about Steve and Eddie secretly hooking up for years before s4. They weren't exactly secret about it either, but everyone just assumed they hated each other.
Oh, Steve and Eddie are both going to the bathroom together? Steve's probably gonna stick his head in a toilet.
Eddie was seen being dragged behind the gym by a very red and angry looking Steve? It's just another fight.
Steve was shoved into the back of Eddie's van in the parking lot? He probably owes Eddie money for weed.
They don't get caught. Ever.
Not until the events of season 4 happen and instead of hanging behind while the others check on Eddie in the boat house, Steve pushes passed everyone to get to him and wraps Eddie up in the most tender hug, his hands running through Eddie's hair as he pulls back to ask, "Are you OK?"

“I don’t think I’m straight.”
Steve had reached that conclusion exactly ten seconds before saying it out loud. Laying upside down on the couch of his house with his best friend draping her legs on top of him.
“Is that what you were thinking about?” Robin asked, not lifting her eyes from her book.
“Yeah, it just makes sense.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Steve hummed thoughtfully. Did he want to talk about it? Was it important enough? Did it change anything?
“I feel the same,” he said. “I thought being gay would feel different.” For a second, Steve was sure Robin would tell him that was a stupid thing to think.
“Are you gay?” Robin asked instead, because she is Robin. She was able to ask something in a judgemental tone without being judgy.
“I'm not straight.” he repeated.
“Pretty sure there are more than two options.” She explained with a joking tone. It was lucky, she thought, that she found a zine hidden in a library when she visited her aunt in Indianapolis.
“How do I know what I am?”
“I don't know, actually,” she said, putting her book down. “I've never seen what the big deal with men is.” Robin explained, crossing her arms. “That's how I knew.”
“I definitely see the big deal with women,” Steve responded simply.
“What about men?”
“I think I always saw the big deal, I just pretended it did not exist.” Steve explained.
“Oh, sweet old denial.” She teased. “How do you feel about this?”
“I would feel better if I had better taste.” Steve deadpanned, causing Robin to laugh and kick him. He slid out of the sofa dramatically to the floor. “Kicking me while I'm most vulnerable, Buckley? I see your game.”
“I have been bidding my time to find your weak spot, Harrington.” Robin joked lightly, jabbing Steve’s legs with her foot. “You will fall, Steven!”
Steve retaliated by pulling her into the floor.
“Look who's falling now?”
“Whatever,” Robin pushed herself to sit upward, sitting on the floor with her back against the sofa. Steve mimicked her with his back against the coffee table. “Who is the guy?” she asked.
“I don't wanna tell you,” Steve whispered, more out of respect for their tradition than anything else. “You’ll make fun of me.”
“Of course I will,” she whispered back. Steve reached for her hand to intertwine their fingers and she held him without batting an eye. “That’s kinda my job as your soulmate.” Steve chuckled. “I have to make sure whoever it is doesn’t mess up our vibe, you know?” He didn’t.
“I’m sure he won’t."
"Are you really gonna make me guess?" Steve lit up at the suggestion. Before he could speak, Robin continued "I'm not gonna guess, just tell me."
"Are you afraid of getting it wrong and looking like a fool?" He teased.
"It's Eddie." She answered less than a second later.
Steve did not respond, shocked at her quick response.
"Who's the fool now, Steve?" The smile on her face was infectious to Steve, who poker her with his foot.
"How did you do that?"
"By having eyes."
"What do you think?" She closed her eyes and hummed as Steve waited for her response.
"I think he looks at you the same way you look at him."
"I should ask him out."
"I can be your wingman!" She exclaimed.
"Oh, my god, yes!"
"We have to make a plan," Robin yelled. She jumped to her feet, letting go of Steve's hand, and dashed up the stairs. "I'm going to get some paper."
Steve stayed behind, sitting more comfortably on the floor, and removing the magazines they had on the coffee table off.
They made a plan, that ended in more of a disaster which is a story for another time. There is only one thing that is important.
Eddie said yes.

Maya Hawke insisting Robin be a lesbian instead of just a rebound love interest for Steve. Joseph Quinn playing Eddie as someone who's clearly got a crush on Steve. Caleb and Noah giving such raw emotions in their characters. A big thank you to all the actors making their characters better than anything the writers could do.
