“I never know what to say when they do that,” she admits to me, once her admirer has gone.

When she begins to open up, it is instantly clear why she has found her footing. Although she seems unaware of her own uniqueness, there is a resoluteness to her, something distinctly Alina, that is hard to come by elsewhere.

During Oscar season, Alina’s Cinderella story, essentially the first act of every version of A Star is Born, received almost as much attention as her performance. When rehearsing a monologue in Central Park, she caught the attention of several onlookers. One of them was Aleksander Morozova, himself a former boy genius who made Forbes’ inaugural 30 under 30 list in 2011 as a rising industry player. Morozova had had difficulty finding the lead for his latest project, a mid-budget modern-day Joan of Arc story. That chance encounter would change both their lives.

But before becoming Morozova’s number one draft pick, Alina had no exposure to the entertainment industry. “I thought I’d get to do plays, if I was lucky,” she says. She cites Morozova as a source of support, calling him “Sasha" in the same breath that she laughs off any swirling rumors of a potentially scandalous romantic connection. “He’s a friend,” she says of Morozova, fourteen years her senior. “He’s been a huge help. I’d have no idea what to do without him.”

Even with a mentor to help her chart Hollywood’s rough waters, she’s nervous for what lies ahead. “I know movies can eat people alive. I don’t want that.” She pauses. “I don’t want to lose the spark.”

But actually, Carol Danvers has spent her whole life overcoming misogyny and sexism to prove she is just as capable as any man, in fields that have traditionally been overrun by men, so it makes sense that she’s confronted with these issues throughout the movie.

The new Star Wars movies and the Transformers prequel Bumblebee do exactly that through Rey and Charlie, and even the latest Disney animations have moved on from the “Princess searching for love” trope by having the likes of Moana and Elsa searching for purpose instead.

They also prove that you don’t have to be a woman to write female characters in a nuanced and empowering way as male screenwriters like J.J. Abrams (Star Wars), and Jared Bush (Moana) can pen scripts that offer solid female narratives too.

History, however, has proven that male writers are also the worst culprits for delivering one-dimensional women and cringe-worthy feminist dialogue and the latest X-Men, Men In Black and Avengers movies are examples of this problem.

So if studios are really sincere about correcting the gender-balance of movies, and the film industry too, then its time they got more women writers like Jennifer Lee (Frozen) and Christine Hodson (Bumblebee) to pen its movies.

The budget is fixable, and if you shoot it in North Africa rather than the Middle East, I think you could circumvent a lot of the political issues -- which have the convenience of being historical and therefore at a certain distance (cf. Kingdom of Heaven).

Somewhat related to the last question, is this something that you think Arnold would be interested in as part of his film comeback or is this project something for a younger actor?

Well, when Paul Verhoeven told me that Arnie was too old to play Hagen, a little piece of me died. But he was right -- it needs a younger man, in his thirties ideally (even The Rock is a bit too long in the tooth fairy -- I mean tooth). Chris Hemsworth could do it, but I think I would rather concentrate on finding a way to visit the parallel universe where Verhoeven and Arnie actually made it in the '90s.

...While I would have liked the idea of Arnie playing a crusader knight, the story sounds even worse than Kingdom of Heaven. When Verhoeven says that the Crusades were “anti-Arab” or “anti-Semitic”, he is lying or ignorant because that is not the full picture. 

While it’s true that Jews were massacred by the crusaders, they were the result of uncontrollable mob violence rather than an actual order of the Church to annihilate them. So much so that Calixtus II issued the papal bull Sicut Judaeis forbidding Catholics from harassing, killing, stealing, forcing Jews to convert to Christianity on the pain of excommunication.

As for being anti-Arab, this is incorrect. Nevermind the fact that the crusaders enjoyed the support of Arab Christians, in fact many Muslims chose to live within the Christian states of the Holy Land because they found the crusader rulers more fair and just than their own sultans, caliphs and emirs and never compelled them to convert to Christianity either. This is acknowledged by ARAB SOURCES, mind you.

So all of this shows that the Crusaders were actually more noble and tolerant than we give credit and certainly not the fanatical monsters that we picture. But then again, in the liberal/leftist perception of “morality”, they still qualify as monsters for the sheer fact they were European Christians and representative of proto-Western imperialism.

At this point, Dionne and Lawrence have designed the new photon diode and checked their design with computer simulations and calculations. They've also created the necessary nanostructures -- the custom smaller-than-microscopic components -- and are installing the light source that they hope will bring their theorized system to life.

"One grand vision is to have an all-optical computer where electricity is replaced completely by light and photons drive all information processing," Lawrence said. "The increased speed and bandwidth of light would enable faster solutions to some of the hardest scientific, mathematical and economic problems."

Spinning light, breaking laws

The main challenges of a light-based diode are two-fold. First, following the laws of thermodynamics, light should move forward through an object with no moving parts in the exact same way it would move backward. Making it flow in one direction requires new materials that overturn this law, breaking what's known as time-reversal symmetry. Second, light is much more difficult to manipulate than electricity because it doesn't have charge.

Lawrence described the one-way action of this three-part setup, known as a Faraday isolator, as similar to taking a moving sidewalk between two doors, where the sidewalk plays the role of the magnetic field. Even if you tried to go backward through the last door, the sidewalk would usually prevent you from reaching the first door.

In order to produce a strong enough rotation of the light polarization, these kinds of diodes must be relatively large -- much too large to fit into consumer computers or smartphones. As an alternative, Dionne and Lawrence came up with a way of creating rotation in crystal using another light beam instead of a magnetic field. This beam is polarized so that its electrical field takes on a spiral motion which, in turn, generates rotating acoustic vibrations in the crystal that give it magnetic-like spinning abilities and enable more light to get out. To make the structure both small and efficient, the Dionne lab relied on its expertise in manipulating and amplifying light with tiny nano-antennas and nanostructured materials called metasurfaces.

The researchers designed arrays of ultra-thin silicon disks that work in pairs to trap the light and enhance its spiraling motion until it finds its way out. This results in high transmission in the forward direction. When illuminated in the backwards direction, the acoustic vibrations spin in the opposite direction and help cancel out any light trying to exit. Theoretically, there is no limit to how small this system could be. For their simulations, they imagined structures as thin as 250 nanometers. (For reference, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick.)

Fury from the Deepfake

Earlier this year, Doctor Who fans were treated to some rather exciting, yet strange news. Students at the University of Central Lancashire had started a film project re-creating the lost First Doctor episode "Mission to the Unknown." I say "First Doctor," lightly, as it's the only televised story of Doctor Who to never feature the Doctor. Because of this, and it being only a single episode, it seems an obvious candidate for re-creation. Not to badmouth any of the actors involved in the episode, but none of them are irreplaceable. Even without Nicolas Briggs giving the project some weight, no sacred cows would be in jeopardy. Nobody has to fill the shoes of William Hartnell or his two lovely companions.

When I covered the new animated version of "The Macra Terror," I discussed the importance of re-creations. While a small portion of the fandom dislikes the practice, most fans agree that they're a good thing. The re-creation has taken on many different forms throughout the years. Classic Comics compiled the tele-snaps of lost episodes with captions allowing readers to follow the story. The Target novelisation is a sort of re-creation. For some, they act as the only way to experience lost episodes. There are the unofficial reconstructions from videographers like Loose Cannon. YouTuber Josh Snares has been working on some rather promising reconstructions of his own as well. Many of the narrated TV soundtracks have recently been pressed to vinyl. While it seems as though BBC is really pushing their animations, are those the final form of the reconstruction?

If you'd have asked me before the UCLAN students' project, I may have said yes. Now, I'm not so sure. The BBC seems to have sanctioned the project. Doctor Who actors Peter Purves and Edward de Souza even showed up on set to give their blessing. There's not a lot known as to exactly what sort of release the project will receive. Perhaps the BBC will release it on the Doctor Who YouTube channel. Or maybe it will be a blu-ray extra in the near future. But which blu-ray? An animation of "The Dalek's Masterplan," perhaps? Regardless, I believe it opens the door for an entirely new kind of re-creation. Enter deepfake.

For those of you not in the know, deepfake is a somewhat new form of cgi that uses facial recognition software to swap out a person's face for another, to varying degrees of success. You may remember it from the uncanny video of Jennifer Lawrence with Steve Buscemi's face. While many people fear deepfake's impact on identity theft and national security, there's also an undeniable artistic implication. Facial swap technology has been around for years in various forms. As a concept, it cropped up in places like the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "The Running Man." In 1994's "The Crow," Brandon Lee's face was swapped in after his tragic on-set death. With deepfake technology becoming more and more refined, it's also becoming cheaper and cheaper. Which is the point I'm here to make to the BBC- it doesn't cost much!

If you follow my logic, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this. What if we employed the methods of both the animations and the student film? What if the only thing an actor has to do is actually fill William Hartnell's shoes? Nobody has to recite his dialogue, they only need to be his body double. Deepfake can then follow the faces of actors mouthing the lines to the original soundtracks. With the same faithfulness to set design and filming that the students of UCLAN gave us, these episodes could see the light of day once more. Mind you, the sets would cost something, but weighed against the cost of animation, probably fairly comparable when you consider the budget of classic Who.

Let's face it, nothing will ever be as satisfying as the originals, but that's part of the fun of re-creating classic Doctor Who. It's a chance to be creative with the source material. But what about modern Doctor Who? How could deepfake impact the current series? There's no more obvious example than the 50th Anniversary special. While "The Day of the Doctor," was a critical success and loved by many (myself included) there is a glaring omission of the surviving Doctors. As I said in my article about older companions, the War Doctor was used as a sort of filler classic Doctor. Ironically, one of the show's biggest setbacks is time.

When they wheeled out DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy, and William Shatner for six Star Trek films, there were no issues. But if you want to make a Voyager or Next Gen movie several years later, you have to explain why a hologram or an android got fat and old. Sure, Data could have upgraded with old age to feel more human, but we all know it's a dumb idea. While the Doctor is not an android or a hologram, they all regenerate. If Six regenerates with curly blonde hair (and Sylvester McCoy's face) then you can't see him with Colin Baker's wispy white hair. Though poor Peter Davison's weight and hair loss were explained by "time differentials" in "Time Crash."

In typical Doctor Who fashion, this multiple Doctor episode came with a caveat. Someone is always missing. It's funny then that the very technology I'm suggesting was used in the advert for "The Day of the Doctor." In a rather impressive sequence, we see several Doctors' faces on body doubles. We even get the closing shot of the episode where Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor joins his past incarnations to stand on a cloud. Sadly, the body doubles stood so still, I originally thought they were mannequins. (Gasp! Autons!)

It's inspiring to think that by 2023, Doctor Who will be celebrating 60 years in time and space. By then, it's entirely plausible that deepfake technology could get to a point where an episode like "The Fourteen Doctors," could happen. If we can replace William Hartnell with Richard Hurndall and David Bradley, or Matt Smith with Jacob Dudman, we can certainly replace Jon Pertwee with his son while a deepfake Second Doctor runs around with Fraiser Hines doing the lines. Doctor Who is a show that lends itself to these kinds of innovations. The very essence of this concept was instilled with the inspired concept of regeneration, or "renewal," as they called it back then.

I'll admit it, deepfake still looks pretty ropey, but so did most of the CGI in the Ninth Doctor's run. There are so many reasons why something like deepfake is perfect for Doctor Who. It's a chance outside of the comic books to see Jodie Whittaker running alongside Tom Baker and K9! We can create lost episodes. We can update missing scenes. There are multiple precedents within the show to look into the technology. We can finally do one better than ghoulishly sticking the Brigadier into a Cyberman suit. And if nothing else, we could finally get Christopher Eccleston back, sort of.

Dark Phoenix (2019)

Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox means Dark Phoenix will be the last installment in the main X-Men series. That’s a shame because this film ends it on a low point. More than a low point. This is a crushing disappointment. The worst in the series since X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Nine years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and his mutant students have been accepted by the world as heroes. After a rescue mission in space goes wrong, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) comes into contact with an entity from space which amplifies her powers beyond control.

Fans criticized X-Men: The Last Stand for differing too much from the source material. This film shows you what happens that sometimes comic books need to be restrained. When the series began, Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Xavier were stand-ins for Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Hank McCoy) could be gays and lesbians afraid to reveal their true selves for fear of persecution. Now, they’re superheroes going off to space and thwarting alien invasions. Wait, what? Maybe there’s a way this turn would've fit, but this isn’t it. The film's villains (led by Jessica Chastain) are boring, one-dimensional, unnecessary nothings. Wasn’t it enough for Jean Grey to turn into the Dark Phoenix and go on a rampage, nearly undermining everything Xavier has done?

Dark Phoenix is right. This is one gloomy picture. There’s little humor or fun and the action is subdued, focussing primarily on character drama. We should care but somehow, we don’t. It may be due to the limited characterization key characters in this film - notably Jean Grey and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) - have had. Motivations see to turn on a dime. Granted, Phoenix is in a heightened emotional state so I understand her going on a rampage… but why are the aliens so murderous? Actually, I’m glad they’re cardboard cut-out goons with no personalities because then, the film is free to kill them en-masse in the film’s only real standout scene, the climax. After it, you’re like “finally! Now let’s get this movie started!”.

It’s a terrible installment from many viewpoints, throwing away key characters in an unsatisfying fashion (looking at you, Mystique) despite efforts to make what happens feel big and impactful. Aside from that one awesome action scene, the only thing working is the performances, and the score by Hans Zimmer).

Say what you will about X-Men: The Last Stand the baggage it brought to the series was fixed and resolved nicely with Days of Future Past. With this film being the mess that it is and X-Men: Apocalypse being a disappointment, the best way to remember this franchise is without the last two. At some point, “New Mutants” will be released and hopefully, it’ll be good. Hopefully, it’ll be the sendoff the mutants deserves. (3D Theatrical version on the big screen, June 8, 2019)

In answer to your question, the short answer is, no, I don’t believe Jennifer and Chris Martin were a real couple. Jennifer started this relationship just as her hacked, naked pictures were everywhere and she needed something to get people to stop talking about them. Being involved with a huge, older rock star getting out of a high-profile marriage to an enormous movie star did exactly that. And Chris got to look like a stud while Gwyneth was controlling the narrative of their divorce.

The other thing that supports that this relationship wasn’t real was that Chris’ next girlfriend Annabelle Wallis was in the picture for much of the time of Jen and Chris’ alleged relationship.  She was posting pictures in Malibu and attended the Grammys that year when Chris was also there.  Annabelle even provided background vocals to Coldplay’s album Adventure of a Lifetime which was recorded at the same time as CLaw. And Chris was placed several times in Vancouver where Annabelle was filming a movie. 

Now people can say that maybe Chris was just cheating and he may have been, but take the Annabelle situation and also consider that Jen and Chris really didn’t spend a lot of time together (and when they were seen together it was clearly coordinated with paps and “sourced” stories about their love), and it just seems like the whole thing was a PR opportunity to help two people change the conversation that people were having about each of them. And it worked!

My sister Abbie Duncan is far from a prude and highly regards bothy Belene and Gayel professionally speaking and still has yet to understand why she would have a sleeptime dream of Belene and Gayel in this plot fashion. This is because I Corey Cooke have to avoid mentioning more details on Gayel to for karmic reasons. Anyhow, less than 2 to 3 seconds of my sister seeing that graphic scene she felt some benevolent force grant her wish and plucked her inside a hybrid witchcraft/sleeptime dream museum that one of her spirit guides in the dream told her is slated to open on earth in a location bordering Maryland Virginia somewhere between the years 2350 to 2355. The same spirit guide that told my sister to just call him  explained that he understand's how she is feeling because my sister Abbie Duncan knows in waking life that Gayel is very much passionately in love with Marina but is torn between his feelings with knowing that feeling how Belene loves him alot andor as a singer put in her song where she is telling her lover that she is going to love him the most. However, my sister Abbie Duncan explained that this sleeptime dream where she saw Belene use her magician spellwork to get inside her sleeptime dreams was meant to symbolize to her that she has some unfinished business with a male connected to law sometime within the next 5 years or less and that she is correct to avoid listening to other people's stereotypes of what she ought to study and that studying law is Belene's dream, not Abbie Duncan's. Truth be told Abbie Duncan wants to study in something that many people would far from expect her too but as her brother have been asked to avoid revealing that and to instead communicate that Belene coming into her sleeptime dream was more to symbolize that she is just as capable as eventually becoming a leader as Belene and is just as powerful magic wise thought this may take her around 5 years or less to finally come into her own. The Walmart Debacle: A Spider-Man One-Shot

Spider-Man. That's me. I'm Spider-Man. Which is cool and all, but it's not a huge help when it comes to American History.

"Why does it matter what year Benedict Armstrong defected?" I groaned, slamming my textbook shut and tossing it carelessly onto my bedroom floor. Ned, perched on the bottom bunk of the bedset, threw me a dirty glare, shaking his head in disapproval as I hung from the ceiling listlessly.

"It's Benedict Arnold," he corrected, setting down his stack of notes. "And Peter, you need to study if you're going to pass finals next week. You're barely getting by in History."

"I've had more important things to do," I mumbled.

"Oh," Ned retorted. "Like that ATM robbery the other week where you almost stopped the cops from getting the guy?"

"Besides that."

"Or the time three days ago when you skipped third period because you were convinced the janitor was dealing drugs, but he was actually just having an affair with Mrs. Johnston?"

"Hey, he looked fishy," I exclaimed indignantly.

"I think the world can do without Spider-Man for a few days," Ned replied, his gaze growing more serious. "Besides, I thought May went all psycho-aunt after finding out and grounded you or something."

"That was months ago," I said. "And Mr. Stark took her out to a nice dinner and explained the whole thing, talked some sense into her, you know. Everything's cool now. Except I can't be out past 11, but other than that."

"Wow," Ned murmured sardonically. "A superhero with a curfew. Better hope all the ATM robbers don't find out." I frowned, then snatched an empty soda can from my bedside table with a web, chucking it at Ned's head while he chuckled to himself. Slipping down to the floor, I strode to the window and parted the curtains, peering outside.

"I just don't wanna miss anything," I said quietly.

"You won't," Ned assured me, shifting on the bottom bunk. "Now come on, let's go over the Revolutionary War again." I sighed heavily, running a hand through my dark hair.

"Alri -"

Before I could finish, I was interrupted by an alarm ringing loudly from my computer. Leaping across the room in a single bound, I clicked excitedly until I discovered the source of the alarm.

"There's an armed robbery at the Wal-Mart ten blocks from here," I practically shouted. "It looks like they have a hostage!"

"Peter, it's Tuesday," Ned said with an exaggerated yawn. "Can we let the police handle it for once?"

"I gotta go, Ned," I argued, tossing him an earpiece as I stripped out of my t-shirt and sweatpants. "Besides, if you didn't want me doing this kind of stuff, you shouldn't have helped me hack into the emergency dispatch network."

"Fair point," Ned relented, abandoning the stack of books beside of him and sauntering over to the computer, where he took a seat and began clicking away.

"Thanks, bro," I murmured, smiling appreciatively as I dawned my suit. Adrenaline rushed through my veins as I slipped the mask over my head, and a soft, familiar voice filled my ears.

"Good evening, Peter."

"Hey, Karen," I mumbled, giving Ned one final nod as I slid open the window and darted outside.

"A little close to curfew, aren't we?" said Karen as I propelled myself across the street.

"I have 37 minutes," I protested, slinging my body across another block as a long web shot from my wrist. "Plenty of time for a robbery and hostage situation."

"Shall I replay some audio from the last time you missed curfew?" Karen queried. There was a crackle, and then my head was suddenly slammed with the sound of Aunt May yelling nonsensically.

"Okay, okay, I get the picture," I grumbled, and Karen promptly shut off the noise.

"I'm with you on this one, Karen," came Ned's voice over the comm.

"You know," I said, "You guys could try being encouraging."

"Don't die out there, buddy," was Ned's response.

"I echo Mr. Leed's sentiments," Karen added.

Grunting to myself, I closed the distance between myself and the approaching Wal-Mart. At last, I reached the roof. Glancing to the streets below, I spotted a squadron of police cars gathering by the entrance. A swarm of cops were standing by, talking into their walkies and swaggering about with their guns bared.

"Any word from the police channels?" I asked, pressing a finger to my ear.

"There are three men and one woman, all of them armed," Karen answered. "They're in the back of the store in the electronics section."

"Okay," I mumbled to myself. "Not too bad. How many hostages?"

"Two," said Karen. "An employee and a civilian. There's a ventilation shaft fifty feet behind you, which will take you close to the electronics section."

"Thanks Karen," I replied, sprinting across the rooftop to the top of the shaft.

Removing the metal plate on top took a minute or so, then I carefully crawled down the shaft. It was cold, to say the least, and I shivered underneath my suit.

"Your body temperature is decreasing rapidly, Peter." Karen remarked. "Shall I activate the suit's heating system?"

"Yeah, th-that'd be great," I responded through chattering teeth. A rush of warmth began to seep into my skin, and I blinked, clearing my focus as I neared the end of the tunnel.

Popping my head into the open, I gazed down to find myself directly above the children's clothing. No customers in sight. Relief flowed through my veins, and I crawled into the high rafters of the ceiling with a boost of confidence.

Across from the clothing lay the electronics. As I navigated towards the section, moving carefully across the rafters, trepidation began to sink into my heart. I picked up the sounds of shouting, and I strained my ears to listen in. Peaking in between the rafters, I noticed a group of four, all dressed in black and wearing ski masks. Two, a man and a woman, were carrying rifles, while the others bore pistols. On the floor between the four of them sat the hostages.

"I've got eyes on the hostages," I murmured.

"What's it look like in there?" Ned asked. I glanced over the two hostages. There was a middle-aged, red-haired man wearing a Wal-Mart uniform, and a young girl with curly black hair and a familiar jacket. I squinted, peering closer at the girl.

My heart stopped.

"Oh no..." I said. "No no no...'

"What is it?" Ned inquired, his voice spiked with panic.

"It's her, Ned," I replied in a rushed tone as terror shot through every inch of my body.

"Who?" Ned shouted. "Please tell me it's Jennifer Lawrence. That would be so hot."

"It's MJ!" I hissed, my voice starting to tremble.

"Michelle?" Ned screeched. "Are you kidding me?"

"What do I do?!" I asked to no one in particular.

"Well you can't let her die!" Ned answered. "She's the Decathlon Captain! We'll suck without her, and I need to get in as many extracurriculars as I can."

"Although Mr. Leed's priorities are a bit skewed," Karen broke in, "I agree that you should offer your assistance as soon as possible in ending this dilemma."

"Alright," I whispered. "I"m going in."

I sneaked noiselessly across the rafters, drawing ever closer. I could feel sweat dripping down my forehead underneath my suit, although I wasn't sure if it was from the heating system, or the pressure that had suddenly crashed into my pounding skull. As I paused directly above MJ and the rest, I finally caught on to the words of her captors.

"The cops are gonna storm this place any second," the woman was saying in a nervous tone, her words muffled ever so slightly underneath her mask. "We should just go. We'll get enough cash with all these devices." My eyes swung to the left, and I realized the man and woman with the rifles were both hefting large, bulging bags across their backs.

"That idiot manager will be back with the money from the safe in a minute, Cat," one of the men with a pistol growled. He suddenly reached towards MJ, grabbing the collar of her jacket and yanking her backward. Her face was etched in fear, but she remained silent as he jammed the business end of his pistol against the side of her head. "And if he plays any tricks, then we'll give these tiles a makeover with the girl's brains. I think red would add a nice bit of color, don't you think?" A wave of anger shot through my body like fuel as the man and his cronies burst into laughter, and MJ squirmed uncomfortably. Without another thought, I swung silently from the rafters, hovering just a few sparse inches above the man's head.

"If you ask me, I think yellow would be a better choice," I said, struggling to keep my voice calm.

The man whirled around, and was greeted with a thick web splattered across his face. Squealing like a newborn piglet, he began scraping away the webbing. I launched an aggressive kick into his stomach, sending hims sprawling to the floor, his gun clattering loudly onto the tiles.

"Then again," I continued, shrugging nonchalantly as the other three turned towards me. "I'm not much of an interior designer."

In the blink of an eye, the men sprung towards me while the woman attempted to gather the bags of stolen goods and keep a gun trained on MJ. Still dangling from the ceiling with one arm, I kicked off from a nearby stand, then shot a web around the two men as I spun in a tight circle around them. Stuck together, they shouted angrily as I snatched their weapons and deposited them by the first man's pistol.

Wal-Mart Man was making a run for it, and the woman let the employee run into the clothing section as she struggled to carry both of the massive bags while forcing MJ alongside of her.

"Hey!" I shouted, latching a web onto a pillar just ahead of them. "Why don't you try these electronics!" As I swung past, Karen switched to a personal favorite web-combination of ours, and I zapped the woman directly in the back. Electric tendrils zig-zagged across her torso, and she burst into a fit of convulsions, collapsing to the ground. "Yeah!" I exclaimed ecstatically, pumping a fist into the air in celebration.

Then, I face-planted into the pillar. Not my best moment, I admit. I slid to the floor, my face flaming brighter than the outside of my suit.

"Wow," an all-too familiar voice said from behind me as I picked myself off of the tiled floor. "So graceful." I gulped, trying to look casual as I spun around to see MJ dusting herself off.

"Are you ok?" I asked, my embarrassment forgotten as I noticed a bruise already swelling on the side of her face. I started forward, then stopped myself, clenching my fists as I cleared my throat. "I mean, they didn't harm you?"

"You could at least try not to sound like a prepubescent, Peter," Ned's voice teased in my ear.

"Nothing serious," MJ answered, crossing her arms over her chest as she studied me through narrowed eyes. "Do you remember me, Spider-Man?" she queried, her tone almost taunting. "D.C.? Washington Monument?" I swallowed the lump in my throat, pretending to appear shocked.

"Oh, D.C.," I said, chuckling lightly and waving the comment away. "Yeah, that was... that was nothing, really. Glad to do it."

"Um-hmm," MJ murmured, raising an eyebrow. "Well, you should really be going before the cops get here."

"Right, yeah," I replied, glancing upwards towards the rafters, shooting a web to the nearest beam. "Have a nice night M-" I coughed, correcting myself. "M-Ma'am. Have a nice night, ma'am."

"Hey," MJ called after me as I raised myself into the air towards the ceiling. "Thanks," she said, and I glanced down in time to see a rare smile light up her face.

"Y-yeah, no problem," I stammered, giving her a thumbs-up before scurrying back up to the rafters.

My heart slammed in my chest as the leftover adrenaline pumped through my blood.

"Sounding a little nervous there, Pete," Ned commented through the earpiece. "Don't get me wrong, she's cute and all -"

"Shut up, Ned," I riposted. "MJ's a friend. I... I just didn't want her to get hurt."

"Uh-huh," was Ned's response. I rolled my eyes, and didn't say anything else for the remainder of the journey back home. I re-entered my room through the window just as the clock struck 11 o'clock.

And thus another night as Spider-Man came to a close.
