The situation in Lebanon today is bleak. Carved out of the remains of the Ottoman Empire and subjected to years of colonialism-lite administration by France, its economy and infrastructure have been devastated by a long civil war, overlapping occupations by Syria and Israel, and corruption on a massive scale. Since 2019, Lebanon has been in the midst of a severe financial crisis, with widespread unemployment and hyperinflation. Now 80% of the population is poor and Lebanon is on the brink of becoming a failed state.
And yet, JD Harlock, Poetry Editor at Solarpunk Magazine, who lives in Beirut, believes in solarpunk. Join us for this episode to find out how that can be and what day to day life is like in Beirut right now.
You can find JD on X and Instagram at @JD_Harlock.

My first published short story ("Shelf-stable") is out now in @solarpunkmagazine's Solarpunk Fantasy issue! In a transitional post-post-apocalypse, Ada dreads the arrival of the witch who regularly visits her town...
It's a love letter to Weird Little Girls everywhere, especially the ones who learned too many life lessons from books. It's also about all the early-twenties adults out there who internally panic as they try to help said Weird Little Girls through crises. It's also also about canning peaches.

Article: The Luxury of Dread: Feelings about Climate Collapse
The Luxury of Dread: Feelings about Climate Collapse In my latest article for Unsustainable Magazine, I unapologetically brought my academic research on affect to bear on our current climate emergency. I hope it contributes to the discussion of how we react to the climate apocalypse in a good way.

a better home awaiting - original short story
"Oh sweet Jesus in heaven," Stacey says as she and Harper pull up to their grandmother's house in her dearly beloved F100. "It's so much worse than I thought."
The old house out by the defunct Army base had always been a little ramshackle, but before, it was charming. Now it just looks like it wants to eat somebody.
"Don't take the Lord's name in vain in front of me," Harper says. "If you want to lead your own soul to perdition, that's your prerogative. But you needn't do it in my presence."
"Harper," Stacey says patiently, "if I avoided every last goddamn thing you think leads to perdition while we work on this house, this is going to be the worst seven days of my entire life.” ...
Harper opens the door. Stacey is pleased that it’s too high for her to disembark gracefully in her long plain dress. She has to use both hands on the grab bar to get out. “You ever think about driving this relic a little closer to the ground? You know, the ground? The place where you walk once it’s time to get out?”
Stacey makes a mental note to take off the running boards the next chance she gets, just to fuck with Harper and her stupid short legs. “The higher the truck, the closer to God.”
tags: gen. slipstream/fantasy. Appalachia, sisters, witches, sister-witches, hauntings, ghosts in the attic (or actually I guess the meadow behind the house if you wanna get specific), dowsing for water (in a God-honoring way), generational trauma, post-apocalyptic home repair
summary: the world ended a while back, and there's nothing more that can be done about it, or so you might think if you believe everything you read in the Post. up in the hills, though - that's a different story. there's still plenty of shit left to fix, and Stacey Wheeler and her kid sister Harper are doing their damn best to fix it before it fixes them. 8k.
Do you enjoy folk magic, houses that want to eat people, emotionally fraught sibling bonding, and post-apocalyptic ghost stories? Then boy oh boy are you in luck! Check out my short story, “A Better Home Awaiting”, coming out January 1, 2023 in Volume 4 of @oficmag! (x) You can get a digital copy or, joy of joys, a physical copy!
I had an absolute blast writing this and polishing it up with the OFIC Mag crew, and I am thrilled to be sharing it with you!

discovered a very cool trick today for all you non-desktop users out there:
if you want to view the source of any web page in a mobile browser, you type "view-source:" before the http in the url!
i don't think there's any way to live-edit the source code like you can on desktop firefox with f12, but it still is incredibly useful for things like 'hey, how did they get this page to look like that?', a very common question you may ask yourself while setting up a webpage of your own

Habitats Kickstarter Update
As I mentioned at the start of the month, a project I’m part of has been running a Kickstarter campaign throughout November. Habitats Magazine is a new science fiction magazine focusing on optimistic and uplifting science fiction. I had a lot of fun working on my piece for Habitats, and I’d love to have the chance to share it with everyone. That means that the Kickstarter project needs to reach…

This was our very first episode of the podcast, back when Solarpunk Presents was hosted by Solarpunk Futures, a production of @solarpunkmagazine - it's a sort of test-drive, as Christina and I were brand-new to podcasting at the time, so we thought we might have a discussion about issues we'd been seeing as non-fiction editors in slush articles. Turns out, solarpunk non-fiction is difficult! Here's the offish description:
"In this soft-launch of Solarpunk Presents, the companion podcast to Solarpunk Futures, hosts and Solarpunk Magazine nonfiction editors Ariel Kroon and Christina De La Rocha tackle the question of “Must Solarpunk Should”? This is a dilemma that unconsciously or consciously comes through in a lot of the nonfiction submissions that we receive in our slush pile, and we have Thoughts about it. So many thoughts! Possibly controversial one! But one of the best things about solarpunk is the space that it gives us to explore and think through new paradigms, new systems thinking, new ideas – some of which maybe we don’t necessarily love, but that are part of our world regardless of whether we like it or not. We’re learning and growing with every new day as solarpunks - come join us!
PS: The audio is a bit bumpy in parts; please excuse the technical hiccups. We’re still learning!"

New Rhythm Utopia - What is it?
The New Rhythm is not a projected form of utopia. It is not the maximal reach of will.
It is not something to be controlled or managed by anyone.
