#sherlock rant

I’m supposed to be working at the moment, but I’m going to take a break and say this:
I have been in the Sherlock fandom for about two years now and I am so grateful I found such a safe place.
I started watching Sherlock during a difficult time in my life.
I was hanging out with a friend one afternoon and I don’t even really know how it happened, but she convinced me to watch Sherlock.
It can take me a while to get into a show. Like… a long while. So, I was a bit wary about it, but I’m grateful for her persistence because she just sat me down and turned it on.
I’m going to admit that I didn’t instantly fall in love with it. There’s a lot to the show and (in my opinion) it can be tough to understand if you don’t pay good attention to it.
My friend and I only ended up watching two episodes. After that, I didn’t think much of it.
One evening, I was sitting on my sofa, scrolling through my TV to see what’s on and low and behold, I somehow find Sherlock.
I watch it again… and this time I can’t stop watching it. It only takes me a few days to get through the whole series, and suddenly it’s my new obsession.
I legitimately couldn’t stop thinking about it. It got worse when I found fanfiction.
Sherlock saved me. I don’t mean to be too dramatic, but it really did. I was in such a stump part of my life and reading Sherlock fanfics or watching Sherlock(TV) allowed me to feel a little lighter, like all the burden that was presented at my shoulders could just dissipate.
The creators of the show turned characters that were popular in the 1800s into something people in this century could relate to.
They got these marvelous characters and studied them in such a deep manner and brought them to life on screen, in the modern world.
And it isn’t just about the characters but it’s also about the whole feeling of the show. They show 221B Baker Street as a cozy, homey safe haven which Sherlock and John can live their adorable domestic life. It is where they plan, discuss cases, laugh, drink tea, sleep, sit by the crackling fire, watch crap telly, eat takeout, and all the things that make them feel at home.
And with Sherlock and John seeing 221B as their home, it has also had the fandom seeing it as such as well.
Just the thought of the show makes me feel comforted. It made my past self feel comforted when she was going through hell.
I know for a fact Sherlock has helped every person in the fandom someway, somehow. It’s a beautiful show that portrays intelligence, friendship, family, relationships, mystery, excitement, warmth, sadness, grief, romance, happiness… there’s too much to list.
But all the qualities of the show have allowed us fans to find a place where we can feel safe. We go to Sherlock whether we feel happy or sad, we go to Sherlock when we need comfort, we go to Sherlock when we need distraction, we go to Sherlock when we need to cry, we go to Sherlock when we need to feel something.
So, sorry for my dramatic rant but I just needed to get this off my chest.
I hope that Sherlock has offered all of you some sort of happiness.
Have a marvelous day <3

now that I’m reading the original works of arthur conan doyle, I can see why people would dislike bbc sherlock and enjoy the original work tremendously more (I love both by the way! absolutely no hate to bbc sherlock I love both versions)
in bbc, sherlock rarely shows much emotion at all and he’s a bit of an asshat to everyone for the majority (keyword majority, I really enjoy the character development at the end) of the series. he shows no concern or fear ever until later in the series. he’s stuck up and kind of stuck in his own little bubble for most of the series too. john watson is also different from his own counterpart, he’s a bit more angry and more involved in relationships and such (correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t finished arthur conan doyle’s series of books yet and I’ve plenty to go! hope I manage to finish it, it’s really interesting so far). not to mention other characters like lestrade and mycroft (especially mycroft’s relationship with sherlock)
in the original books (from what I’ve read) sherlock is much more welcoming. he shakes john’s hand when they are introduced to each other and isn’t as cold or demanding as bbc had made him out to be. when he makes deductions, he does so humbly, never really shows any hint of pride at his ability to deduce such complex details from just observation. he isn’t very stuck up, and has a nice brotherly relationship with mycroft (again only from what I’ve read!! please correct me if I am wrong) and is willing to admit that mycroft’s observational ability is indeed much better than his. he also was immediately willing to admit all his flaws to john and make sure he was comfortable living with him. I’m not too sure about john as for me it’s slightly difficult to explain or deduce his personality. he is writing from his perspective and I never quite see much of his dialogue, but I realise he’s much less awkward with sherlock the first time they met. he almost immediately took to calling sherlock his friend and they shared nice conversations. john was never forced to follow sherlock anywhere, neither was he dragged around too much. also just a side note but I find the rivalry between lestrade and gregson really fun to read.
but something I like about bbc sherlock is the different interpretations of characters. all sherlock series or movies (including all sherlock media. like granada [I should watch that soon] or that one dinosaur movie. I love that movie.) have different interpretations of the characters. the ones where robert downey jr acted in portrayed sherlock as slightly jealous of john’s other relationships. I liked john and sherlock’s relationship there because it was very sibling like. and the dinosaur movie’. sherlock was mumbling but that’s okay because there was a 7 foot tall CGI dinosaur and sherlock and john fought it. also lestrade had an incredibly strong cockney accent.
back to the topic of bbc sherlock, it’s modernised so that it takes place in the 2000s. sherlock is more mean there because nobody really has a clue what he’s saying most of the time. they don’t try to match his sort of not as “modern (?)” way of speech. they drive him up the walls. that’s why he’s so stuck up. he thinks his ability is ordinary and that others should be able to do it if he can. basically, he’s mad because nobody really can be on his level in terms of observational skill. that’s why he was such good friends with mary. because she was, in a way, as smart as or even more intelligent and witty than him. in the bonus episode of the series (the abominable bride, if I’m not wrong) when he is lost in his thoughts, he goes back to the time period in which the original sherlock holmes books took place. he might think he is born in the wrong time period (or rather it’s merely implied) or he could simply just be thinking about the possibilities. he seems happier and more carefree in that episode too. he’s actually willing to admit to being inferior to mycroft.
overall, I absolutely adore both versions of sherlock. both of them are amazing. if you dislike bbc’s sherlock, that’s totally okay!! but personally I love the individuality of character steven moffat and mark gatiss gave the cast. amazing actors on set too.
fuckkkj that went on for entirely too long I’m sorry for ranting so much
I really wanted to share my thoughts on these versions of the story, I hope you enjoyed reading it (and thank you so much for taking the time to)!!

So in keeping with my Doctor Strange, Batch obsession, I decided to start watching Sherlock
Aaaaaaaannnd, I have many thoughts, I just finished season 2, sorry this will be a long one, be warned there are probably some unpopular opinions below 👇
I really WANT to like this show, it’s super popular, and maybe Batch in all his British voice glory really makes the whole thing, but I find that what I dislike about the show outweighs what I like thus far…
I just can’t get over the fact that thus far in the show there isn’t a single likable female character, except for Mrs. Hudson and even she is characterized as the ‘crazy little old land lady’ ( but I do love her to pieces don’t get me wrong)
It seems the show goes out of its way to make the females the villains or weak, Sherlock has an antagonistic relationship with every single female that he comes across
Molly for example, she deserves so much better, Sherlock constantly steam rolls her and berates her, he apologizes sometimes, but it doesn’t ever really feel genuine bc he continues to do it, her uses her for her access to the morgue and the lab! She had to make him say thank you for it but that wasn’t genuine either, he like didn’t understand
Molly really should have slapped him that one time he embarrassed her at Christmas and then Kissed her cheek! The nerve of the man, like that made everything ok
Molly and Sherlock had a little moment at the season two finale that I thought was promising but she essentially said ‘ I know you don’t love me and you love John but I would still do anything for you,’ gag, but I also understand that sentiment, having experienced unrequited love a few times myself and then he ended up asking for her help! which still seemed like manipulation more than genuine interest in her friendship :/
Also it broke my heart that after that whole exchange with Molly and asking for her help, she wasn’t listed as one of his friends to Moriarty, only John, Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson :/
Irene Adler, who I loved the idea of , still ended up having to get saved by Sherlock, she sold him out to Moriarty, and then he ignored her texts bc he likes her or something?! I didn’t get that
You can also talk about the female Sargent Donovan, has had it out for Sherlock day 1 and she was the one to suggest that Sherlock was a fraud to Lestrade
In the season 2 finale they focus on the female jury member when Jim explains how he threatened all the jurors
Then when they were tracking the kidnapped kids it was the BOY that loved spy novels and painted his shoes in black light paint, the BoY was the clever one, not the girl
The girl screamed at Sherlock making Donovan think Sherlock had something to do with it when that was probably Moriartys set up 🙄
That female reporter from that crooked newspaper in the finale also antagonized Sherlock and stupidly bought Moriartys story 🙄
Sherlock even berates all of John’s girlfriends and dates whether out of jealousy or just shit writing it was kind of funny at first and by now to me is a tired cycle, yes we get you want his d and your jealous as shit
I’m sure there are probably more examples, but its TIRING to me, all the negativity toward women and it makes me not want to continue watching
And it’s disappointing bc I saw Moffat was a cocreator and I really liked some of the women that he created in Doctor Who, it’s just really surprises me that THIS is what he helped make?!
I know it was back in 2010 and I’m not mad about the gay subtext, I love it! I’m a bisexual person, bring on all the gay drama. Actually I find it frustrating that Sherlock and John just don’t accept their feelings and get it on already! You can do a slow burn gay love story and not women hate or shit on women in the process :/
Honestly if they had kept Sherlock asexual I think that would have made it more interesting and hilarious, but he is obviously in love with John and even has his flirtation with Moriarty all good stuff but again I flinch when a new female comes on screen bc it’s like ‘ what bad thing is she going to do now’ 🙄 what nasty thing is Sherlock going to say to her or ‘deduce’ about her, it makes me cringe
I’ve heard season 3 and 4 aren’t much better and I’d really like to finish the series and I probably will but I’ll probably be ranting about it on here again 😆
Honestly, it other people’s fanfics on here that are saving this show for me, so thank you fan creators 🥺🙏🏻
I’m really only in it for HIM 👀

I get a little shiver everytime someone calls The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes one of the greatest love stories in English literature because it's so true, even if you see it as romantic or platonic.
I think that's mostly what we mean when we keep asking for the queer adaptation these characters deserve. Because yeah, we're aware there already exists ones in which either of them is canonically queer and has unrequired romantic feelings for the other, and Yes we're aware there exists one in which he basically has a romance with Moriarty, but what I'm left with after finishing the whole canon is a need for the Holmes/Watson relationship to be acknowledged in its intensity, because it's neither a conventional friendship nor is it a conventional romance. It's a life bond that's gotten watered down in recent years in favor of comedy which mostly acknowledges the "bickering like an old married couple" part and neglects the actual canonical and intimate tenderness of it.

The struggle of not knowing how to tag "Holmes/Watson" content if it's not specifically the BBC version of the ship.
Like, yeah, the ship name in general is Johnlock. I guess. But also most people don't call them by their first names if they do not talk about the modern adaptations. So calling those "Johnlock" feels kinda weird (?)
But there isn't really a popular ship name made from their surnames. I have seen Watsolmes, which I think is a good ship name, but people barely use it.
So I just end up using "[adaptation] Johnlock", "Johnlock" and "Watson/Holmes" ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌
How do we feel about Watsolmes, guys???

Sometimes I just stop and think how weird it is that people are so heated over modern readers generally reading "confirmed bachelor" as gay when that is literally what contemporary readers at the time of publication were also doing??? If a man was a confirmed bachelor, they generally just assumed he was gay. It was a specific euphemism for queerness at the time. Like why do you think those words existed? A specific label for a specific type of man? Like, come on, readers, you're most likely not stupid, and queer folks have been included in narratives from the dawn of time (Epic of Gilgamesh, anyone?). Just because it was illegal or unconventional does not mean the author didn't include queer characters and narratives. It just meant including them in subtler, more creative ways that couldn't be fucking prosecuted, but it's good to know that you are the physical embodiment of kakhi walls and prison decor so I'm spared the bother of wasting my own valuable time engaging with you.

i'm sORRY??!!?!?!
the new episode was such a rollercoaster omg THE TALK BETWEEN JOHN AND SHERLOCK WAS SO HEARTBREAKING AND GOOD AND IT LITERALLY MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME!! THE WAY JOHN WAS SO VULNERABLE AND SHERLOCK WAS SO VULNERABLE AND THE WAY IT PERFECTLY DEPICTED SHERLOCK'S THOUGHT PROCESS AND AHHHH I CAN'T! I LITERALLY CAN'T!! SKSKDKAKD AHHHHH
so ahm... let me take a short breath and calm down for a sec. as I said before. this episode was so soft. in like every angle. today's part as well as the whole Gloria Scott episode. we learned so much about both John's and especially Sherlock's inner world and thoughts and their motivations. not only through them having that deep, emotional conversation but also with all the other interactions they had with Victor and Mariana and the others. plus everything Victor tells about Sherlock from when he was younger. and the domestic scenes???? like I could start screaming again ksksjkdkna
also narrative wise it is done so perfectly. if you look at the episode as a whole, it is framed by two almost identical scenes of John and Mariana. and even tho they seem so random, they actually reference different aspects and moments of the episode. the orchids are thread that spans through the whole story. and that they take one home at the end is also just cute.
also the cliffhanger was top tier. the build up and everything. it was so perfect. it also perfectly emulates the short story feeling of ACD Sherlock Holmes in press.
just all in all it was such a wunderful episode and continues the trend of every episode being better than the previous one (tho I'm not sure how this one can be topped). I can't wait for next week

About Fanfiction
You know when you come across a fanfiction that is just so wonderful in every way, and once it's over you genuinely don't know what to do. There's just this static going on your brain and it's just like- I - I don't - like a genuine loss of words. Because you have read something so beautiful and unique, and thoughtful, something that has actually changed parts of you and the way you view things.
This is why its ridiculous how much shit fanfiction gets, because this feeling, is so incredibly rare, and let me tell you, not once have I read a published book that has had this effect on me.
Sure, there is bad fanfiction, but guess what. There are also bad books. And just like there are amazing books, there are amazing fanfictions. And I got to read one of those for free.
The skill, not only in the writing but the way the characters are told, the story, the emotions, everything. The time and research that writer has put on this work, and I got to read it for free.
Through fanfiction we get to read and tell stories that the mainstream media is too bigoted to publish.
It is really fucking stupid to shit on fanfiction because "some of it is bad". Some of us don't get represented in the media as much, some of us at all, and some of us only in negative light.
So yeah, say thanks to fanfiction writers, leave kudos, leave comments. Fanfiction can be really fucking amazing.

there are two things i think would fix sherlock holmes. the first, of course, would be adderal obviously, but also i think headphones would fundamentally rewire his brain. he needs to block out the sounds. he needs to listen to books abt poison on tape while he makes chemistry explode. it’ll help him trust me

How the fuuuuck is the Lupin fandom not bigger on Tumblr?
This show is soooo good. It's everything BBC Sherlock promised and never delivered on! Scratch that, even the comparison is insulting to Lupin!
The music slaps, france slaps, the cast is hot, the plot is thicker than my thighs.
My people, where are you? Am I just spoiled by the big presents of the good omens fandom?
The search function mainly returns the anime. Which is also good. But not what I wanted.
