I think a lot about how all versions of Watson don’t see themselves as anything special, meanwhile all versions Sherlock Holmes are looking at them like “This is the most wonderful human being who ever lived and the only person I want to spend all my time with for the rest of my life.”

I understand why some people want to view Watson as Neurodivergent alongside Holmes, and honestly good for them. It's a sucky sucky world out there, go project to your hearts content. But for me personally, I have to see Watson as neurotypical.
My little neurodivergent ass saw Holmes and imprinted on him like a little lost duckling. And then there's Watson, who sees Holmes and his Behaviours™️ as something wholly out of the norm but absolutely adores him anyway, quirks and all. It's so refreshing to have a implied-neurotypical character who comes across neurodivergent behaviour and is just like. 'oh! that's new. ok then, on we go.' he doesn't try to change Holmes, only tries to help him away from destructive behaviour , like weaning him off cocaine.
Doctor John Judgey Watson saw Sherlock Holmes and did not judge him. instead he was just facinated by him. adored him. acepted him.
that being said, Watson is Fucked Up. that man is not 'normal', but I do think he is neurotypical.

PSA Sherlock Holmes is already Public Domain. (in 2022)
Edit: Happy Public Domain Day / Happy New Year.
- - -
In the UK and many other countries all of the canon has been public domain for decades. On January 1st 2023 aka Public Domain Day "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger" and "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" last two Sherlock Holmes works by Doyle still protected by copyright enter the public domain in the United States. The consequences of that are as follows: you can now adapt, rewrite, remix, make derivatives of those last Casebook stories and any elements within. That is it.
The Conan Doyle Estate Ltd has lost lawsuits over the fact that Sherlock, the characters, and any and all elements of the books in the public domain can be used to create works.
You can right now legally make, sell, publish derivative work of Holmes stories (except the last 2), make original stories or any and all characters (not introduced in the last 2 stories) and have them interact in any way, shipping to your hearts content
You cannot now nor in January legally make derivative works of the still copyrighted adaptation, original material from the BBC, Guy Ritchie, Enola Holmes, pastiches or any other source is protected.

and the inability to know if tumblr posters are serious in thinking that it’s important to allow legal Holmes/Watson creative work. Some people are definitely confused about the PD status of Holmes so hopefully this clears that up.

The Sherlock Holmes books collection aren't about Holmes solving a mystery, 're basically about Watson describing how amazing Sherlock Holmes is solving a mystery. It's for those who like Sherlock's, and Watson's, personality and way of acting. The 'mysteries' are just a fun bonus.
That's 'why' every reader I know who is a mystery fan in itself says don't like Doyle books. Trying to read the Sherlock Holmes collection just for the mystery, without really liking Holmes and Watson, is like going to a dinner and only eating the starter appetizers because you don't like the main course.
This is why in adaptations, based on the mysterious plots of the books faithfully or a totally new creation of a mystery, the essential thing is it has Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (the mystery is always in the background, in relation to them).
It also wouldn't be best if it were just Sherlock Holmes, in part we only admire Holmes because we see him through the eyes of John Watson. And if it were just John Watson it wouldn't be best either, because it's his dedication to Holmes (and his intelligence in solving mysteries, by extension) that makes Watson such an incredible partner. Holmes' idea that, if he is the light, Watson is his conductor, is very right.
Doyle didn't know that Sherlock Holmes would become his Magnus Opus, he didn't even want it, he felt that writing about Holmes took up his time and prevented him from trying new literary styles, but in the end he had to give in and resurrect Sherlock Holmes, and do it with that he and his faithful partner live together again on Baker Street (removing Watson's wife from the plot because she was inconvenient to the purpose), because that was what the public wanted and that was what made him money.
Sherlock Holmes is proof that a character/a literary work can surpass and become greater than the author who created it. Once the author publishes, it (his work, plot and characters) also lives in the imagination of fans and admirers, and that is a path of no return. Regardless of whether or not the author likes the direction it will take and how fans and the general public 'll deal with it.
Doyle is not a renowned mystery author, he is an author renowned for having created the very intelligent and eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler and faithful partner John Watson.
The central point is, and always has been, the dynamic duo that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson form together.

“You’re not hurt, Watson? For God’s sake, say that you are not hurt!”
It was worth a wound—it was worth many wounds—to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking.
Translation-
Holmes (panicking) : Are you okay? You would have died, my dear Watson!
Watson(instead of focusing on his own wound and the trauma of almost getting shot) : Uh... I like your mouth.
