This went through my head when I was writing my previous post, but I dislike the concept that you shouldn't do something if someone doesn't like it. Personally I feel it's unrealistic and very.... uwu safe-space-y.

In the case of my previous post, it'd be the fact that the villainess doesn't like the male lead, and yet he consistently puts himself in her presence. Someone can say that he shouldn't do that because she doesn't like it. But as that previous post pointed out too, they are in a political engagement decided upon by their parents. As nobles, they have obligations to fulfill. What they personally want doesn't matter. There are times you have to do things you don't want to do because it is your responsibility to do so.

I also think that going too far in the above mentality infringes upon your right to live your life. If you know someone doesn't like you at work, are you expected to accommodate them by avoiding the break room and bathroom in fear of running into them? If dogs give your friend anxiety, will you let that stop you from owning a dog? If your friend dislikes a specific person that you personally have no issues with, will you avoid that person to respect your friend?

While the first two are easy to decipher, I know the last one will catch people's attention. Personally, if the person you dislike didn't maliciously harm you in some way, I feel you have no right to expect your friends to avoid that person.

To paint a picture, my friend really disliked this one girl because she was a whiny attention seeking flirt that flirted with anything that gave her attention, even guys eight years younger than her. They even had a few clashes here and there. However, even though she may not have liked it, even she realized she didn't have the right to stop me from interacting with the girl. Whatever beef they had was between them. It would be unfair to me to rope me into it, especially because I was friends with both of them before the clash.

While I do believe in the golden rule of not being a jackass, there is a difference between being a jackass and asserting your right to autonomy. The sad fact of the matter is that you can be the nicest person in the world and still upset people. You can still make people uncomfortable. Not only that, people have different thresholds with what they are able to handle and what they will allow. What's important to realize is that these thresholds are subjective. Your thresholds will only match you, so don't push them onto other people.

Kibutsuji Muzan- Loop-Around

Muzan knows those eyes too well… those beautiful, colourful eyes on a woman so pretty and loving. The flashbacks, the memories, the tragedy and the anger he feels over his past. Over his own failure and his own mistakes over what he did during Heian Era, during his life as a human. Those awful, painful drawn-out days where all he could do was sit in a bed and watch people come in and out of his room

The person who arrived the most was his assigned wife, Dokusha. A kind, patient, sophisticated woman of wealth, and she always spent so much time to take care of and love Muzan, all whilst looking around for the right medicine to cure his terminal illness. Muzan, during this time, couldn’t care less for that woman. She was just a useful tool to make him comfortable, feel validated and save his life but through the weeks, as he grew even weaker, he got real tired of waiting to be rescued by so many incompetents.

When he gotten given a type of medicine that worked, that odd concoction from a rather viable doctor you had bought in for Muzan, and when it shaped him into the first ever demon. He could finally walk for the first time in his life

And he walked out of that room… in perfect health, with razor sharp fangs, with a blood-thirst for human flesh, with his muscles clenching and strong. However, as he explored. He ended up finding something else as tragic as what he caused to his rescuer. His assigned wife mauled to death by wild Ussuri Brown bears in the forest, all whilst clearly trying to find absolutely any medicinal herbs that could possibly do anything to save Muzan

Muzan never really appreciated nor cared for Dokusha, he didn’t see her as much of a person and whilst he looked at the mangled body of that woman… he felt… almost nothing. It wasn’t disgust but it also wasn’t anger, it was just… emptiness and after that day. He suspected he would never see a human woman named Dokusha ever again, foolishly unaware of the fact he truly did love Dokusha and truly did feel a deep pit of misery-fuelled fury at her death. She did so much for him and he did nothing for her

Even after learning the fatal accident that caused her death was entirely centred around trying to recover Muzan from his birth sickness

Currently as the high and mighty Demon King, the first ever Demon in existence. Kibutsuji Muzan, has been confronted by the newest Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps in Asakusa, the Tashio Era when walking back to his ‘family’, and she has the eyes and the voice of his real wife. 10,000 years after her death, she’s back in a entirely new form and just knowing his dead wife has been reincarnated as his moral enemy is making Muzan’s undead heart throb in pain and outrage. Why does he feel this way looking into this Hashira’s eyes?

10,000 years after her death and now, Muzan has finally realised he has missed his wife so bad that he has grown desperate to see her again. He never noticed it, he always thought about locating the Blue Spider Lily and spreading over his ‘gift’ of demonicism around to every human he can find to gain the power he desires, to concur the Sun. Now, he notices how aggressive he is over the idea of love and how he is so repulsed by the six other wives he has pretended to marry throughout his life

Muzan stayed silent, blood red slit-pupiled eyes glaring at his reborn Hashira wife, taking in her features to every corner and constantly seeing glimpses and flashes of her original self… she’s so beautiful and he didn’t even notice how beautiful Dokusha actually was. How she didn’t deserve to die for his sake, if he could, he’d have ordered Dokusha to stay with him when she left upon calling that doctor in, as to save her life so then, he could have turned her into an demon too

Made her his Queen of Demons but no… he failed and now, he is beyond bittersweet. Pining, angry at his own blindness, upset he let the only woman who actually genuinely cared about him go… if he could reverse time, he would

Muzan, now, cannot bring himself to be the cause of his wife’s death once more… he can’t. He’ll just have to figure out another way to get her back, all without hurting her so before Dokusha could even think to begin attacking the Demon King with all the strength she has within that branded Nichirin Katana. Muzan fades away into the pitch black night, his glowing red eyes providing the only semblance of light for him when he retreats from that Hashira and those magnificent eyes, disappearing several streets down from her in a way she can’t track him down

He loves her

He knows he loves his wife and he can’t believe he had to wait for 10,000 years to recognise the mere fact that he did love Dokusha. Even if he didn’t know her enough to even call her a friend, her optimistic compassionate nature and the right to admire that personality was drowned out by Muzan’s own bitterness and desire to remain alive. He messed up royally with the first Dokusha, he won’t mess up with the second Dokusha

And he will make her his queen… even if it includes spending hours following the Ice Hashira around. He’ll do it and he already has a plan devised in his mind. He won’t hesitate to find some method to transform into a powerful immortal being like himself

All because he wants you back so bad

this is the last thing im going to say about taylor swift because now i keep getting messages in varying degrees of outrage about off-the-cuff comments i've made about her. the problem i have with taylor swift and her fanbase is not with her as a person or really with the art she creates: all art is art even if i don't personally like it. what i have a problem with is that taylor swift has kind of became a very palatable, very white, very upper class foil on which people can plaster "morally correct" opinions, like being a feminist or a lesbian ally, without actually having to engage with the real, more difficult side of those issues. it is much easier, both socially and personally (especially if you are centrist) to hold up taylor swift's alleged bisexuality or the conspiracy about her being a lesbian as a sign of your allyship than it is to engage with real-life lesbians, who are frequently not pretty, thin, white, and upper middle class.

additionally, it is easier to pinion your feminism on someone like taylor swift than it is to engage with feminism in a world where now being feminist requires you to, for instance, speak out in support palestinians who do not have access to basic menstrual hygiene and are at risk of disease as a result, or think critically about women working outside of the home in the midst of a very prevalent movement touting the lucrative values of "traditional womanhood" to thinly disguise misogyny and chattel marriage, or engage in the very real and extraordinarily detrimental exclusion of trans women. taylor swift is easy: most women are not.

i think taylor swift is fine: i grew up with her and a lot of her music still holds value for me. but touting her as some feminist vanguard is a bit hollow to me: she's really not radical, because she looks out for her interests first and foremost (which is not a bad thing: everyone, especially women, have to be self-preservative- accusations of self interest are not automatically negative nor even really accusations) and then is treated by her fanbase as the model for all women. its a matter, i guess, of public perception, and how much easier it is to engage in white feminism than it is to delve into the real grit and heart of what feminism is or ought to be. however, if she wants to gone girl that jock she's dating, i will support her.

Elaborating on my previous post in as unborked a way as possible....

In S1-S3, TrapHawk and FrankMarg are often contrasted as dueling couples very explicitly. So I'm going to take my statement "Hawkeye is more effeminate but Trapper is more feminine" and apply it to Frank and Margaret to clarify what I mean.

"Frank is more effeminate than Margaret, but Margaret is more feminine than Frank." Frank is unmanly, in a hypocritical, denying, self-deluding kind of way. He's a poser, and the humor comes from having his pose exposed as fraudulent and inauthentic. Hawkeye is also unmanly, but in a cool way, because he owns it and deliberately shirks what's expected of him "as a man" because he has no intrinsic respect for it. The humor comes from his rebellion and self-confident outrageousness. Margaret is more traditionally masculine in many ways than Frank, something which is played for (sexist) humor in its own right, and to contrast how unmanly Frank is by comparison and heighten his jokes. Trapper's masculinity plays a similar role- while he sometimes plays the sissy to back up Hawkeye, he more frequently acts as a straight man to heighten the contrast and make Hawkeye funnier.

So when I'm talking about feminity, I'm thinking of it not just as "unmanliness", but as "traditional feminine role". Margaret plays that to Frank- she's supporting him, hyping him up, she's his distaff counterpart. A lot of their humor is that old school Punch and Judy "nagging wife and henpecked husband" stuff, for sure, but there's no question that he's the main antagonist and she's backing him up. I think when people say she doesn't become her own character until he leaves, it's because she's so much his other half while they're together. Trapper is also playing a supporting role to Hawkeye- he's also the helpmeet, the supporter, the other half. In some ways I think he actually plays to the ideal of traditional feminity better because he doesn't subvert Hawkeye the way Margaret will do to Frank sometimes. I'm sure I'm forgetting something but I can think of like two times Trapper puts Hawkeye down for a joke, while Hawkeye does put Trapper down semi-frequently. Similarly, Trapper plays a caretaking role semi-frequently but I can only think of two times Hawkeye plays that role for Trapper. If under patriarchy to be a man is to be in charge, to be independent, to be your own person, who's the man in Trapper and Hawkeye's relationship? Not Trapper.

Contrasting Trapper with a few other characters just to further clarify my thinking on this... Klinger also has the Bugs Bunny effeminacy as rebellion humor going on, but he isn't a feminine person- the humor is the incongruity between his masculine bearing and his behavior. Radar plays a support role to Henry as well as to TrapHawk, but he is very much his own wily little person, he isn't "the other half" to anyone in particular, and although he's "unmanly" he's unmanly in the ways boys are, not women. He isn't a feminine person. A lot of Henry's humor comes from playing around with his masculinity, but it's never directly or pervasively subverted or questioned. I think Mulcahy kind of comes closest to "feminine man", but his rather soft and supportive nature is also contrasted with his outbursts of more conventional masculinity, even in S1-S3 when he's a more minor character.

I could point to other things that give Trapper a feminine vibe to me, even though he's not unmanly, things that are kind of female coded in our culture- his quietness, his neatness, his fondness for kids, his morality especially- but my thesis here is Hawkeye's effeminacy is an act of self-assertion, and Trapper's feminity is a role of support.

First, let’s figure out how someone from the USSR could have ended up in the States. There were only two options: either you were stripped of your citizenship or you fled the country. Let’s take the first one - suppose your father was a writer and he was stripped of his citizenship because he was writing literature that was against the country’s ideology (I won’t go into details because in reality things were more complicated and scary). You don’t know how your father had connections there, but pretty soon your family got invited to the United States. The person who invited you was Mr. Noel. He also allowed you to stay at his house until you find a place to live.

He’ll probably see you for the first time when he goes to Chris with Knox to give him moral support, and if he’s hesitant, kick his ass.

You didn’t go to any school because you didn’t have the proper documents for enrollment yet, but every morning you walked Chris to her school.

"Where is she?" Charlie asked.

Knox looks at the crowd for a few seconds and points to Chris walking next to you. You stop at the entrance and she goes inside. You wave your hand at her and turn around to walk away. And Charlie stunned.

"Well, this is… Chris? You certainly have less chance than Denburry."

"I know… wait, who are you looking at?"

The next day he’ll try to get to know you. Like… It’s Charlie. I don’t think he’d wait long if he was up to something. The only reason he didn’t do it yesterday was because he didn’t want to hurt Knox’s feelings. He was quite sure that charm you would be as easily as possible. However, he did not expect that you would not be very talkative. And one more thing. Obviously, your English isn’t the best at the moment, and that complicates things, too. But the other problem is that his manner of speech and his behavior… scared you off a bit.

'I’m not serious at all, and I pass no skirt by' - that’s what you’d expect from a guy like that. In the society you grew up in that kind of behavior was discouraged and considered suspicious.

So the only thing you could say when a guy you didn’t know stopped you on the street with a playful grin was quick 'Sorry, I have to go'.

And now Charlie stunned again. How is that even possible? Back at Wellton, he didn't say a word when the poets asked him how it had gone. He told them so confidently that you won't be able to resist him. So how can he now admit that you ignored him?

Of course he’ll be teased about it, especially by Cameron. "Our Nuwanda can’t pick up a girl, huh?"

"Just shut up."

Again, this is Charlie. I believe he wouldn’t give up so easily. So now you meet him almost every time you walk Chris to school. And honestly, it was pretty creepy.

But then again, he didn’t do anything… outrageous, right? He wasn’t stalking you, you two were always out in public, so if you needed help… I think it’s clear what I mean.

At first, he just said hello and asked how you were doing. Then, when you didn’t answer, he said something about himself, about how his day was, complaining about Mr. Nolan. And even though you didn’t understand half of what he was saying, over time, you got used to his company. It took a long time, but Charlie was on cloud nine when you first answered him, "Not too bad… You?"

He was so proud of himself, so that night he wouldn’t shut up. Even after Cameron threw something at him for the third time in a row, so that he would stop talking and let him sleep.

Charlie finally got your name. You’ve had no contact with any of the locals other than the Noel family, so you’re not sure how anyone would react if they knew who you are and where are you from. What’s your name got to do with it? Well, it sounds unusual at least, so… easy to guess. Anyway, Charlie only knows your first name. So far.

Before you knew it, you were waiting for him to show up. Soon you even began to answer him with short simple phrases and laugh with his jokes, if you understood them.

Poems. Well. It’d be weird if he didn’t come up with a few poems about you, right? But you’re not used to the sound of English poetry. Although it’s better to say poetry in English.

I’m not sure how to describe it, but poems in Russian are very rhythmic, they hold a permanent rhyme. They sound different. So when Charlie first read you a poem, you didn’t even get what it was. Congratulations, this is the second time you’ve broken his heart.

One day you offered to walk you home. You’ve known each other for almost two months, and you’re in a good mood today. Why not spend more time with him? And, of course, Charlie could not refuse such an offer. While you were walking, you were talking about yourself more than usual, and even though you were still afraid to tell Charlie the details, you were very eager to give him a hint.

"Was it a poem again?" you said, standing at the front door.

"God, don’t say that, you’re making my heart bleed!"

"The only thing that bleeds is my passport," you opened the door and entered the house. "See you tomorrow, Nuwanda."

The next day he’d walk you home again. You said you had to hurry somewhere, but he insisted. Actually, Mr. Noel was supposed to be taking your family to the embassy today, so when you came, everyone was getting in the car.

You wanted to say goodbye to him, but he asked, "What you meant by 'the only thing that bleeds is your passport'?"

Should you tell him now? You looked him in the eyes for a few seconds, then sighed and took your passport out of your purse and handed it to him.

"I guess now you see what I meant," you muttered with a shy smile.

Its cover is red. Yellow letters, two words – 'СССР ПАСПОРТ' (In fact, red passports were introduced only in the 1970s, but it's not an archive document and I’m not here to teach a full history lesson. So let’s pretend that in 1959 it was already red, not gray).

"Are you coming with us, miss?"

"Yeah, I’m coming." You grabbed your passport out of his hand and went to Mr. Noel’s car, waving goodbye to Charlie.

Well. When you’re a guy from a wealthy American family who goes to a prestigious private school and lives a quiet life, the chance that you meet someone from the USSR… Is there even a chance?

Anyone would be shocked, maybe scared even. But Charlie… Of course he didn’t expect it and he’s surprised. But given his personality and character, I think he would rather be pleasantly surprised. Perhaps even excited.

Now it all makes sense. That's why you avoided him at first, why you spoke rarely and why you seemed to have a slight accent. Turns out he was right about the last one.

He’s definitely gonna be proud that he’s the one who got such an unusual girl like you. He’ll tell the dead poets about it as soon as he gets back to Welton. Cameron will be the only one who won’t believe him.

After that, you became more open with him. You’re still embarrassed by your poor English, which Charlie secretly likes. You told him why you live in the Noel house and about your friendship with Chris. You didn’t tell him the details of how you got here. He asked you a lot of questions, so you had to say it is very painful memories and you’re not ready to talk about it.

Charlie wouldn’t be Charlie if he didn’t ask you to teach him Russian swearing. He literally begged you to, so you had to give up. Now it's the best way to shut Richard up when he does something annoying. He also mutters the curses under his breath when Mr. Nolan gives a speech.

You grew up in the Soviet Union, where a working woman was a normal thing (it's a myth that there was full equality of men and women in the USSR; but again – it's not a history class). So when the question arose of how to renew your visa, you immediately began to think about how to get a job. And Charlie sincerely does not understand this. You can just get married, can’t you? It’s the simplest and seemingly obvious option.

He’ll ask you to marry him. Many times. Every time you start talking about how hard to find a way to stay in the States is. Maybe it’ll sound like a joke at first. But the embassy continues to reject your application, so he starts talking about it more seriously.

I never watched James Somerton's shitty Killing Stalking video because I was trying to be good to myself and avoid something that I knew would make me very angry. In fact, I never watched any of his stuff because the fact that he made a video like that was enough to discount any thing he ever had to say (also I heard about the Celluloid Closet plagiarism).

But man, is the James Somerton discourse bringing a lot of Killing Stalking-related feelings back up for me. Because I'm mad; I'm still so mad. There are a suprising amount of people on social media who are saying they never watched any of his stuff except for the Killing Stalking video. I'm annoyed not just to find out that the vid had that sort of reach and influence, but also because Somerton's unmasking hasn't seemed to make people reasses the validity of the kind of thing he was saying. People are just now being like "hmm I think this guy might have Issues With Women" but that doesn't warrant any reflection on what exactly the motivation is of people who complain about women enjoying a niche webcomic? Because I don't actually believe you're concerned about the influence of some obscure piece of media when you advertise its existence to your large audience many of whom had not heard of it and would never have heard of it but for your transparent outrage porn video. It's rage bait and the target was women that are perceived as straight. A big channel has publicized the fact that they excised a section that endorsed the opinions in this video from their own because they became aware of Somerton's plagiarism and dishonesty (presumably; if it was actually because they recognized his views were coming from a sexist place I would welcome a clarification). And you know, I don't think that's a good look actually. That you needed to be told he was a bad person and couldn't idependently put together that the misogynist man was saying misogynist things.

The comic ended years ago and the fandom has gone mostly quiet, but to this day people are still the peddling the"fujoshi/stupid teenage girls who don't know what's good for them are shipping these characters because they are too braindead to realize it's not a romance; it's a horror, two things I believe are mutually exclusive. I am smarter than all of these cringe degenerates" bullshit. It's in the comments of the hbomberguy video even; one comment was such a gross misrepresentation of the series that my friend needed to talk me down from getting into a pointless youtube comments argument (bless him) because these people are officially making me lose my marbles.

This narrative is full of shit, it's demonstrably not fucking true. You can go on the artist's twitter right now and its full of her retweeting shippy fanart of that pairing readers were apparently never intended to ship.

(I don't think Koogi knows or cares about James Somerton; she just reblogs the works of fans who tag her. This made me laugh though).

Now this is all speculation because he died decades before social media existed, but I think if Nabokov was alive today his twitter would not be full of Humbert Humbert x Dolores Haze fanart. And yet, I have unironically seen people compare shipping Sangwoo and Bum in Killing Stalking with the misreading of Lolita as a precocious sexual temptress more than once.

And this isn't me saying that Killing Stalking is the disgusting"pro-sexualized abuse" comic that tumblr purity police used to characterize it as either. One of these days I'm going to go truly bonkers and end up banging pots and pans on the street corner, yelling at random innocent passerbys about how stories about romantic and sexual relationships are not required to be Hallmark movies. You can make art about the negative, dark, and troubling parts of these feelings and relationships without creating a pat morality tale. You don't need to approach media analysis like your 7th grade teacher has assigned you an essay on explaining what a novel's "message" is.

Nobody, not the author and not the fans, genuinely thinks that Sangwoo and Bum have a healthy or aspirational relationship. This hypothetical person that does not understand the relationship is toxic doesn't exist. Because girls and women, even the ones having cringey fandom fun on tiktok or whatever, are not so stupid and naive that they are unware that breaking someone's legs and locking them in a muder basement is bad. The type of concern troll rhetoric Somerton employed in his video is directed near exclusively at women interested in men and there's a reason for this. Women are not responsible for abuse that men do to them; nobody is responsible for their partner abusing them. If I never saw people spit this bullshit again it would be too soon.

Ok I've given this a bit of thought and this is what i came up with (I'm not 100% on all of these though)

Takemichi- 100% wpuld never dare to hit a girl, he was outraged when Yuzuha got hit and when Emma got hurt.

Mikey- ok this one is a hard one since he said he never would and technically we never do see him lay hands on a girl. But he does threaten Senju at one point and it's implied he either hit her or hit someone who knocked into her during the final fight. Is there a middle section he can be put in?

Draken- would definitely never throw hands with a girl, sees it as being a pointless thing to do (he's also seen first hand how argumentative the girls he lives with can get and wants no part in that).

Baji- Seen people argue both ways on this one but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't throw hands with a girl. His mother would kill him. (Aside from sparring at the dojo).

Chifuyu- He'd prefer to just get beat up by a girl rather then throw hands.

Mitsuya- never ever ever, not in a million years.

Hakkai- would panic and run away if this situation ever came up.

Pah- would not hit a girl, might be a bit rude to one maybe even threaten one if she didn't back off but wouldn't actually fight a girl.

Peh- no way, he looked so upset the one time he accidentally made yasuda cry so would never want to do anything to make a girl cry on purpose.

Smiley- honestly a little torn on this one, his love of fighting and murder is very big but not sure he'd actually fight a girl. I think maybe he would but only if the girl started it and she seemed strong enough to challenge him.

Angry- he doesn't even wanna fight the guys!

Mucho- would fight a girl but only if izana or mikey told him to or she knew something about traitors.

Sanzu- would also fight a girl, literally doesn't care.

Kisaki- he's not much of a fighter but we've seen that he's 100% willing to fatally wound girls so he definitely would.

Hanma- would fight a girl but wouldn't take it seriously, feel like he'd treat it more like a game. Teasing and letting the girl get some punches in, giving her hope before he takes her down, watching the hope fade and seeing how she reacts. Doesn't go picking fights with girls though, just waits for them to challenge him.

Kazutora- would not fight a girl, he seemed outraged to find toman had been targeting girls in that one future.

Koko- would not fight a girl, he definitely seems to think girls need protecting (his comments to hakkai) so I don't think he'd want to hurt a girl.

Inui- he said it himself, he would fight a girl.

Taiju- again we have pretty clear evidence that he definitely would hit a girl.

Izana- would fight a girl if they were strong enough, otherwise wouldn't be interested.

Kakucho- would not fight a girl, he seems to be against girls being hurt in general.

Mochi- would also not fight a girl, he seems to have some kind of moral code when fighting so probably wouldn't fight a girl? Might though if they were very strong.

Shion- wouldn't fight a girl cause he sees it as being beneath him. "This fight wouldn't be fair for you against me!"

Ran- would not fight a girl, mainly because he thinks it would damage the Haitani brother's reputation to be seen fighting girls.

Rindou- Same as Ran but for the added reason that it would be a bit awkward for him to pin a girl down.

South- again canon evidence that he would throw hands with a girl. I feel like he doesn't care about gender just how strong a person is.

Benkei- would not hit a girl, I feel like he'd feel so guilty about it with how big he is so would never. (Aside from friendly spars with Senju where he doesn't go all out anyway)

Wakasa- also wouldn't fight a girl, sees no reason to, would likely just evade a girl if one ever tried to fight him (aside from spars with Senju).

Takeomi- definitely has a lot of thoughts about what women should be so based on those I think he'd find is dishonourable to hit a girl.

Shinichiro- ohhh definitely wouldn't, he'd probably try hitting on her or trying to talk her around instead. Doesn't see any reason to hurt a girl and is most likely the one to teach Mikey that.

Lord Oyster is really going through it, huh

He seems to be some kind of controversial topic right now, and I think he's a really interesting case! I wanna offer my two cents

! I'm NOT seeking to apologize for or defend Lord Oyster's actions, that's not what I want to do at all. I'm gonna do my best to analyze him instead, just as someone who appreciates his character for what it is, no specific side

||| SPOILERS PRESENT & Lengthy Post

◇ The common perceptions of Lord Oyster's character

One side conceives him as this big villain who's outrageously evil (or so it seems people think of him as, with this massive hate he's getting)

The other side isn't doing much better. at all. with their 'he's an angel! how can you hate him!!' claims just because he started of this story with kindness and felt remorse after his decision that ended with terrible consequences

How about considering Loyster a morally grey character?

He absolutely isn't purely good, but in no way is he purely bad either. Abalone is the villain of this story, everything he does is at the expense of others for his own personal gain. To Abalone, everyone is expendable, everyone's a tool to be used for his own success and he will do anything to achieve his goals

Seeing people compare Loyster to Abalone, or say they're similar, is. insane, to say the least . Hell, seeing him competing with Custard for most hated npc is WILD.

Lord Oyster has done good before, if you've seen the first half of the story, it'd be very clear that he cares for White Pearl! Ever since they met, they've been bonding with each other, and even towards the end, Lord Oyster harboured no hate or ill thoughts towards her. He still considered her his moon

That doesn't redeem him, though. In the end, he still made a bad decision, remember that as well as you remember the good he's done, too. I'll touch on this again later

◇ I agree, his decision was pretty ass, but let's look into it

Honestly, there appeared to be NO positive outcome in favour of everyone. A tragedy was always set to happen eventually

Had Loyster not sold the pearl to Abalone, the pearl probably would have been taken by force instead. Abalone was willing to do anything to get it

If the pearl was stolen, House Oyster would have fallen, and the mermaids still would have suffered another attack.

Abalone was always planning to return to sea and comb it for treasures that's rake in a fortune for him, with or without that pearl. He was always going to go back and attempt an attack on the mermaids again, the pearl only makes him stronger with its abilities (Cookies won't get soggy underwater, and they'll be able to breathe)

Had the pearl been kept and remained in Loyster's possession, the House would have fallen. His goals wouldn't have been achieved, it'd be over for his entire family. No one wanted to do business with them except for the Crab family, so out of desperation, he sold the pearl to Abalone, who cunningly made a 'steal of a deal' offer

◇ The hate stems from here, I'm sure

After everything, this really is not so easy to defend when you see that Loyster, even through his stressed state of mind and the burden of his House collapsing, still weighed the options.

Yes, he chose money over White Pearl's gift that she gave with love. Desperate at best, you can understand he needed this money for his whole family, not for selfish gain. But at worst, it wasn't the smartest decision. He knew what Abalone was capable of, I don't know why he was so shocked to see them go out to sea so soon after getting the pearl.

He knew what the pearl meant to White Pearl, and it was precious to himself, too

Ultimately, he chose the needs of his family instead. Which really isn't unreasonable, those are his loved ones, of course he'd want the best for them, and Abalone's offer must have seemed opportune at that time

BUT. Once again, Loyster should have taken more time than just like a minute considering the offer. Abalone gave him a chance to think about it if he needed to, and he didn't take it

*facepalms*

◇ The regret does not redeem him, however...

He can feel sorry, he should be, but that doesn't make him all good again. That doesn't fix the consequences of his decision, the one he made all on his own.

But his love and concern for White Pearl are still there, genuinely. He realises his stupid decision is aiding Abalone and his crew in a fresh attack so soon, and decides that rather than leaving it be, he needed to find her. To rescue her.

White Pearl's rightfully disgruntled, knowing the cookie who was once her sea had betrayed her, on top of everything else going on. She denies Loyster a chance to explain himself, and it's completely understandable. She's hurt and angry, her family is suffering, and Loyster is partly to blame for it. Abalone wouldn't be out so soon had he not obtained the pearl, and his power is at its peak now with the eclipse happening simultaneously

He didn't want this to happen, and he never would have wished for it. He feels remorse for what he's done, and he tries to fix it ever so slightly by going after White Pearl. That's something! It shows he does have heart, but even so, he messed up badly. Though nothing can really change that, his effort after figuring out he screwed up shows he means to be no villain.

His decision was bad, and really stupid, that's for sure, but it didn't come from a place of hatred, or greed, or pure selfishness. You understand what I'm saying here?

The main reason I made this post at all was really because the major misconceptions really bothered me (the 'he's an absolute devil' and 'oh no he's an innocent angel' takes, to be exact, because he is certainly neither of those)

Whether your opinion changes or not after reading this is purely up to you, you could have just read this for fun and that'd still be alright with me! So, that just about wraps up all my strong thoughts on Loyster so far, hope it was interesting at least

Mmmkay, I have thoughts on Alana’s arc and contextualizing Margot/Alana.

This is sort of tangential to what I said here regarding the interplay of control and violence on the show. In that post, I said of Alana:

With Alana, [violence is] the only possible culmination of her losing control of the situation with Mason Verger, with her being forced to follow the abdication of her morals all the way to the end point.

Alana isn’t a “natural” killer like some of the characters on the show, but she’s capable of it when pushed (unlike, say, Chilton) - and the set of circumstances that get her there are losing control, and only being able to regain control for the situation by enabling, and participating in, murder. And this arc sheds some fascinating light on some of the central traits that have defined her throughout the show.

Two of Alana’s key qualities as a character, I would say, are both related to control. Firstly, she feels a strong sense of personal responsibility - she can’t just stand aside and allow injustice to take place. She always intervenes in a situation to advocate for what she feels is right, such as with Abigail, and with Will during season 1 and his arc in prison. She’s very invested in rightness, rather than simply self-preservation, at least initially (less so come season 3, where she’s fine with throwing Chilton under the bus) - when Gideon is loose, with a strong possibility he’ll come after her, she’s not solely worried about her own safety, but rather expresses concern over what happened to him and the fact that he can’t truly be held accountable for his actions when operating under reduced capacity. And she can’t be persuaded or intimidated into acting in her own self-interest if it contradicts her values. She refuses to withdraw her report citing her concerns about Jack putting Will in the field when pressed to do so by Kade Prunell and smarmy institutional self-protection; and, of course, she refuses to take the out that Hannibal offers her in the s2 finale. That moment in Hannibal’s kitchen encapsulates so much of the essence of her character - she’s not the kind of person who could ever walk away without trying to bring him down.

Her other central attribute in the early seasons is self-control. She’s self-aware almost to a fault, and always striving to keep her worst interpersonal impulses in check. She knows her shortcomings in her personal relationships, and compartmentalizes accordingly. She avoids being alone with Will in an effort to maintain professional boundaries and resist indulging in something that she knows would be destructive. Her words to Will after turning him down are telling - she wanted to sleep with him, and was internally divided about the rejection, but an affair would have been “reckless.” She’s extremely careful, including with her own desires.

(Her relationship with Hannibal, tellingly, is not reckless from her POV - it’s her attempting to find emotional safety from her conflicted feelings about Will. There’s an interesting parallel in her kissing Hannibal after the party in Futamono to Will kissing her at his house in Fromage - she “reached” for Hannibal the way Will did to her, grasping for stability.)

What changes for her in season 3 is that, in a word, she gets reckless. She becomes much friendlier with ruthless pragmatism, whereas before, she was outraged at - for example - launching a defense for Will in court based on untruths, even if it could exonerate him. Her plan to play Mason relies on her confidence that the FBI will swoop in and bail her out in the end, so she maintains her trust in institutions (at first), but she’s still willing to use extra-legal channels to catch Hannibal, and manipulate an incredibly dangerous man to her ends. And it’s all still of a piece with her character and her need to take control over and assume responsibility for the situation with Hannibal - but it’s a version of herself undergoing transformation, becoming more ruthless and more willing to take matters into her own hands rather than following official channels. And, crucially, it involves her losing control of the situation, despite her conviction that she can manage it - by which she learns that it’s impossible for her to absolve herself of complicity here, and she has to take a more vigilante-justice route, put her life in danger by loosing chaos in the form of Hannibal, and allow him to take the fall and lie for her.

The fling with Margot correlates both to Alana’s becoming as this new, more ruthless and untethered version of herself, and in the slippage of her carefully maintained self-control. Hooking up with Mason’s sister is pretty much the definition of reckless! It makes the situation considerably more precarious, and the alliance with Margot is hardly essential to her original plan, even if there does end up being $$$ attached to it. But it’s an indulgence that she didn’t allow herself to fully give in to with Will. The parallel between Will and Margot is made pretty apparent wrt their relationships with Hannibal, but I think they also represent something similar to Alana (who herself gets, in certain ways, take the role of Hannibal for this arc). She wants to save people, and Margot, while not toothless, is fairly disempowered and traumatized, someone in need of saving. The relationship with her, for Alana, is a form of giving in to something she’s long denied herself. And, thematically, it makes perfect sense that the safeguards she’s put up around herself begin to dissolve in tandem with her personal beliefs being challenged and forced to adapt.

It's very interesting to me, as a newer Homestuck fan, to see all the extensions for the offical-unoffical archives that 'fix'/remove 'problems' or 'problematic' parts of Homestuck. I was on Tumblr when Homestuck was at its peak and reblogged all the cute ship art, follow the outrageous ask blogs, my best friend did read it as it was still coming out¹. But I never actually read the comic itself, just kind waves from the sidelines. But I wasn't there to experience the big controversies in real time (i.e. 'peachy'). Hussie is not above critique, but I don't think he's a bigot or even a bad person. What he is, is a troll. A classic 2006 'I said something fucked up not because I believed it, but to get a reaction.' Which, I can see to someone who missed that time of the internet, and only knows now. In which people say those fucked up things, to get a reaction and cause they believe it.

And so to see people younger than me, but have joined the fandom at the same time as me, not understand this context, it feels wrong. The things people are willing to sweep under the rug cause it conflicts with their morals vs the things they condemn and blame Hussie for.

Homestuck is a very long, very complicated, but very important piece of art. To not consider every facet of it does it a disservice.

For something made by a 2006 troll, it put a lot of queer characters worth caring about in it. The alpha kids & trolls both exist to be parodies of their beta counterparts. This is partly why Dirk is queer, and that Dirk refuses a label. But is still allowed to opening like, then date, then break up with a boy. It's a response to how the fandom wrote & treated Dave. For those who know it, compare the S19Ep6 of South Park, Tweek X Craig. Matt & Trey, who in my opinion embody the same sort of troll sense of humour Hussie has, handle fandom making their characters being gay quite differently. Tweek & Craig in this EP aren't treated as genuinely queer characters, but the kids trapped in what the town has decided are wacky hijinks of this week. It's not necessarily bad, but compared to Dirk it feels way less genuine.

There's topics I can't talk on fully like the way Hussie's racial biases appear in various characters, as I'm from a completely different country. But in my very non-american opinion, it reads more as 'someone who has never thought to question the stereotypes they were raised with', than as someone who is genuinely and actively racist. There is a difference, and as a mixed kid that's important to me.

I'm not really sure how physically disabled people feel about the way Hussie wrote their physically disabled characters (but if people have written about this I'd love to read and linked to me) but he definitely uses mental disabilities/illnesses as a substitute for the word 'quirky' without thinking much about it (i.e. Nepeta is off-handedly called autistic) it's not really great, but the bar is so low when it comes to these things that my tourettic ass cling to Mituna like a lifeline.

Maybe I had a further point here. Maybe my point was just antis in the Homestuck fandom is still weird to me when there's canon incest. Maybe I've drunk a fair bit of vodka while writing this. I have work in the morning. Good night beloved tumblrinas.

okay this discussion is going to be SO LATE but i’m playing dream daddy (again) and i have ~thoughts~ about our friendly neighborhood youth pastor and his family.

so i’m going on dates with all the dad’s i haven’t in previous playthroughs. (i saw mat and damien and was like good day i do not need to peruse ANY other fathers today).

i’d never done joseph’s route before, bc he’s married duh and i have religious trauma. and he looks like every white man that is a problem. but this time around i wanted to watch the world burn and break that man. ANYWAY. he is- actually… delightful? and i love his dates?? i though that with (potential spoilers ahead i guess but this game is old af) his affair with Robert he would immediately start laying it on thick. but he just invites you to very fucking domestic events, and gets frazzled with basic intimacy.

so i GET that joseph cheated. i understand that a large part of mary’s drinking may be due to that. and i know the “good” ending is not really good at all, and pulls a weird moral gotcha on you. i am all for making players face the consequences of their actions in games but this one falls flat for a few reasons.

1. Joseph objectively isn’t a bad person. Yes he’s had an affair, yes he’s a youth pastor (okay only a little joking). BUT Joseph has his shit together for his 4 kids and i admire the FUCK out of him for it. As someone who was raised by alcoholic parents, seeing Mary’s attitude at her kids’ well being REALLY struck a chord with me. the game wants me to believe Joseph is the bad guy, but i’m watching his wife chug five bottles of wine while her toddler is missing AND SUPPOSED TO BE IN HER CARE. and then i see this dad who is trying, who is involved in community outreach, and keeps a stable home. also i see a lot of “well Joseph puts on an act to make Mary look bad in front of the neighbors”. I’m sorry??? he does not have to make Mary look bad, she does bad all on her own. the “wine mom” and “type a dad” schtick is so fucking heteronormative and played out, even for 2017 when the game was released. and hey maybe that was the point! but if it was, it wasn’t done well.

2. The worst parts of Mary’s character get glossed over in lieu of her being a “wine mom” stereotype. Maybe it’s because i’m an ex alcoholic myself, but i don’t have a lot of patience for the character and i know that. objectively i like Mary, i think she’s funny and tough. but she is a deadbeat fucking mom, and the game WHICH IS CENTERED LARGELY AROUND BEING A GOOD PARENT puts Mary on a pedestal that she doesn’t deserve to be on. would i get dinner with mary? hang out? go shopping?? fuck yeah. would i think, “this person who goes out every single night and flirts outrageously with everyone, ignoring their children and household responsibility for their husband” is a “good” person?? fucking hell no. i would not let that woman look after a hamster. let alone four children.

3. DIVORCE IS A VALID AND HEALTHY OPTION THAT SHOULD BE SHOWN MORE IN MEDIA. i cannot tell you how many nights i lay awake listening to my parents drunk and fighting and prayed (when i believed in prayer) that they would divorce. i WANTED my parents to divorce, because i, at the ripe age of 12 could see what apparently the adults could not. that these two people did not, and should not, be together. now that’s not saying that your “good” ending in joseph’s route should end in a typical romance. i don’t. what i mean is that two people should have come to the conclusion that they are doing irreparable damage to their family by staying together. and your character could have helped and supported in that decision. it is obvious that Mary is living a life she doesn’t want, and i do feel for her. BUT GET A DIVORCE THEN. I know the characters are married and staying together largely in part because of religion… but…. Joseph’s not “that” kind of christian? because i grew up in the church, i know the type. this guy ain’t it. So the “well divorce is a sin” for the character doesn’t work for me.

i love the game grumps and i LOVE this game, but this was an area where i feel like the characterization and “message” was a like clunky and more than hard to follow. i really felt like they missed the mark with this one, i mean hell just make the non-canon ending canon at this point. at least that would make more sense.

also this is not me saying that Mary should be responsible for all household duty bc she’s a woman or blah blah blah. but whether you wanted those kids or not, whether you want to be in that marriage or not, YOU made decisions. your kids didn’t choose to be born YOU did, so you need to step up and idk?? maybe not spend every night out at a bar with the local loner who boned your husband? also maybe your husband sought comfort in the arms of a relative stranger… for… a reason? not a morally sound or correct reason but we can maybe follow the dots.

i saw that you were welcoming infodumps that relate to dracula! i have a not so fun fact about bram stoker and oscar wilde to share :)

so. we know for a fact that wilde was invited to a bunch of dinners at the lyceum theatre. we know stoker wrote those invitations, and it's overwhelmingly probable that he was also responsible for making the guest list. we have tons of evidence showing that stoker was pretty close friends with wilde's parents. basically, we may not know the specifics of their relationship-- we have no solid evidence that justifies saying they were close-- but we do know they knew each other. they hung out in the same circles, their families were friends, stoker presumably chose to invite wilde to all his cool club dinners, and wilde certainly kept in touch with florence.

wilde also adored both henry irving and ellen terry, the leading players of the lyceum, so he found a lot of excuses to visit the theatre. he and stoker shared a passion for walt whitman's poetry. they went to the same university, where stoker recruited wilde to the philosophical & historical society-- though wilde was never a particularly active member. all this to say that wilde was definitely, inarguably, someone who had a presence in stoker's life.

in stoker's only work that can be even remotely considered autobiograpical, which is actually a biography of his boss + allegedly close friend henry irving (titled personal reminiscences of henry irving; wouldn't recommend it, it's not exciting reading), he never mentions wilde. not once. not even when he just straight up lists all the famous people who visited the lyceum theatre.

the book was published after wilde's conviction for gross indecency. there's no record of stoker voicing any opinion about the trials or the conviction-- no public outrage, no public mourning. nothing. wilde's brother wrote to him about the whole ordeal, but there's no evidence stoker ever replied. ellen terry was vocally supportive of wilde. author hall caine, to whom Dracula is dedicated (under the petname hommy-beg), expressed shock and grief and moral outrage. but as far as we can tell, stoker said nothing.

to me, that's one of the loudest silences in history. the only indication of an opinion we ever get is that some years later, he published some articles arguing for the moral benefits of censorship of plays and novels.

florence kept the letters wilde had written her till her dying day, though. apparently her family was convinced she could have prevented the tragedy if she had just married wilde instead of stoker, which is..... certainly some kind of take lmao

(most of this info is taken from Barbara Belford's biography on Stoker plus Talia Schaffer's article on the influence Wilde had on Dracula. they both end up... idk, sort of trying to psychoanalyze a guy who's been dead for a century in a pretty invasive way that kinda skeeved me out? but all the claims i'm repeating here are pretty well substantiated by historical sources, which both authors were very good at tracking down. i know i probably don't need to cite my fucking sources in a tumblr ask or explain why i'm choosing to rely on flawed sources but it's the grad school brainworms i can't help myself)

Thank you so much! Sorry for being late, I’ve been a bit busy. This request was adorable but I’m afraid I might have shifted my focus on “protective brother” Katsura instead than Takasugi’s feelings. I also apologize, this isn’t my best work. Writing Takasugi is extremely difficult. Anyway, hope you enjoy :)

When you told your brother Katsura that you wanted to become a samurai he was outraged. Not really because you’re a woman but because he wanted to protect you. You’re one of the most important people in his life and his only family left so, obviously, he didn’t want you to get hurt.

He had to change his mind when he saw how stubbornly dedicated you were and at the end of the day he couldn’t help but admit that you were a better samurai than many others, both for your sword skills and moral code.

You met the other members of the Joui 4 when you were fighting the Amanto and Gintoki and Sakamoto mistook you for Katsura.

"Oi Zura, on your left!" warned Gintoki “That’s not like you Zura, since when are you this distracted?” said Sakamoto with his obnoxious laugh.

You can imagine their surprise when Katsura popped out of nowhere to slash some Amanto that were going to attack them.

Sakamoto and Gintoki stared at the two of you like lost puppies.

Oi, Kintoki. Why are there two Zuras?

You obviously waited until the end of the fight to explain them that you were his sister and not some twisted clone. That’s when you met Takasugi. He heard all the ruckus and approached his group of misfit friends to understand what was going on.

He was very surprised to learn that you were Katsura’s sister. While you two looked similar, your personalities seemed very different: you were calmer and more serious than Katsura and weren’t nearly as chaotic as he could be.

You bonded over being the quiet ones in a group of loud people.

You were always together, even in battle. It was like you two were in your own world covering each other’s back like a twisted dance of blood and ashes.

That didn’t mean that you didn’t get along with the other Joui, you were actually everyone’s little sister.

He tortured himself for a while, unsure what to do, until one day he couldn’t do it anymore So, much to your displeasure and embarassment, he acted.

Takasugi! I will not tolerate this anymore. You cannot see my sister anymore unless you take her as a bride. You have no idea how painful it is to see you two pine for each other like this, I want grandkids!

Katsura… You’re my brother not my father, you can’t have grandkids from me.

Then I want to be an aunt or an uncle!

At that very moment you didn’t know whether you wanted to kill your brother or yourself, but when Takasugi replied you were quite happy he spoke up.

I am getting really concerned by the people on the left saying they won't vote for Biden anymore because of his support of Israel. And look, I get the emotions. I'm horrified by what's happening too and I'm angry (though not surprised) by our government's response, and I'm also horrified by the people who seem to think this is an acceptable way for the world to resolve it's problems... I think any sensible, caring person would feel intensely about this.

That's all the more reason to channel those emotions into determining our values, seeing clearly the situation we're in, and focusing on practical goals.

Are people's values really to risk letting us slip even further into authoritarianism, even further into the kind of societal and government thinking that lead to this atrocity, just to make a moral point? Because Biden may be fine with this overseas, but we all know the far right would do this right here AND let it happen elsewhere, if not take part in it (and if you think they wouldn't, might I remind you of all the black communities white supremacists burned in the 1920s, all the First Nations people forcibly displaced before that...we have a history here and nothing says we wouldn't do it again).

Someone I know said since she lives in a reliably blue region, she's going to vote 3rd party to "protest" Biden since she thinks it's "safe" to do so.

Biden doesn't care. He'll never know how you voted even if he did. But if enough people decide to "protest" like this, he might lose even a "reliable" area. And it certainly won't make a different if he gets the message then. It probably won't make a difference if you protest vote and he wins either. Margins are already so thin, what's the difference if it's a little thinner?

All you're doing if you vote like this, is telling the rest of us that you're willing to risk all of our well-beings, all of our chance to stop the slide into fascism, all of our chance to move forward and stop things like this from happening in the future, just to express how unhappy you are? I think we're all very clear about that! So what is your actual goal? Do you really think you're helping Palestinians by risking making it even harder to bring about change?

I know it's hard to do something distasteful. But our situation is bad and you can't force a good option out of it. It is not morally impure to be realistic, to make choices in a non-idea situation, even if it feels unpleasant. No one is going to get hurt worse than they already are if Biden/Democrats win again. A lot of people will get hurt a lot worse if they doesn't, and the far right has long been making plans to ensure the left won't get the chance again to have any sort of power. Things are getting worse and we can not afford to lose this.

If you are aiming to be a safe person who shows solidarity with the oppressed, then please don't endanger even more people as an expression of your outrage.

Nie Huaisang aiding and abetting Mo Xuanyu's suicide. Mo Xuanyu wanted to revenge-murder his whole family, Nie Huaisang was actually doing everyone a favor and preventing future problems down the line.

Xue Yang killing A-Qing. Snitches get stitches.

Wen Chao trying to kill Mianmian. For all Mianmian's posturing later on about like being morally better than the rest of the cultivation world or whatever, she really didn't seem to grasp the concept of sacrifices for the greater good. Wen Zhuliu killing Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan. His boss made him do it, and while obviously people are completely responsible for their actions at all times and external pressures should not be taken into account, I need a little more explanation of his Mysterious Past with Yu Ziyuan before I can be totally sure his actions were justified. For example, was she a bitch to him in the past (probably)? Then it's okay.

Nie Mingjue killing Wen Xu. I mean. Sure. Wen Xu's father killed Nie Mingjue's father, so it makes sense that Nie Mingjue sort of displaces the revenge generationally. But then he keeps going after Wen Ruohan, which is like... dude, you got your revenge murder. You're getting demanding here.

Wei Wuxian killing Wen Chao. Hmmm. I'm just like... I get why Wei Wuxian thinks it's justified. But what did Wen Chao really do to him? Isn't he just kind of a figurehead for his dad? Like, he's pretty stupid and inept. Was he really a threat?

Wei Wuxian killing Xue Yang. We're getting into really outrageous territory here. Like what did Xue Yang ever do to Wei Wuxian personally? It's not like any of the juniors in Yi City even died, and he literally only met A-Qing and Song Lan that day. How much could he actually care? Seems like a big old Not Your Problem, Wei Ying, and he should have just left it alone.

Jin Guangyao killing Nie Mingjue. No respect for their shared past, no respect for the fact that Nie Mingjue was only violent and angry because of the sabre spirit which isn't even his fault, no respect for the way Nie Mingjue just wanted to help him be a better person. Sorry, but if he was that scared that Nie Mingjue was actually going to hurt him, maybe he should have told the police or something.

ok, i have a lot of extremely important stuff to do today, but nothing and i mean nothing is more important than this latest tng update. sunday we did "first contact" and "galaxy's child" which was so bad it came close to making me skip my first tng ever and then last night we watched "night terrors" and "identity crisis" which sent me to fucking mars. let's do this

first contact: what a wild episode. my favorite bit in the world is "humans are aliens." it's never not funny. it was funny when they did it in farscape and it's funny when they do it in star trek. i was having a great time. they hold up one of riker's hands and wiggle those strange alien appendages (fingers). gasps all around. "what ARE these?" "a birth defect." points for trying, buddy. he stayed with it until the bitter end

i do wish this had been a funny episode instead of a serious one about space bigotry and alien republicans. the premise is hilarious and the seriousness of the tone, and knowing that in any other context i WOULD have been taking it seriously and enjoying it, kind of brought down the mood a little.

i have mixed feelings about riker's whole deal with that alien lady, tbh. i love watching riker suck and fuck his way out of situations. i love how down to clown he is. unfortunately he didn't seem very down there which turns what could have been an outrageous and fun riker slut moment into a close encounter of the space babes, and i don't really want riker to have any close encounters with space babes. i just want him to have a good time. like did they play it for laughs? yes. and was her fetishisizing him as an ~aaallliiieeenn~ hilarious? also yes. but he literally put his boots back on. and so i just have a hard time finding it as funny as the writers did. i would have been over the moon if this happened to kirk though we could have added it to our slideshow

that said watching him lift up that huge bench preparing to break the window with it was great. he's really strong. good for him.

galaxy's child: i think the only episode worse than this one was code of honor. and at least during code of honor i knew what to expect. i knew everyone said tng seasons 1 and 2 were bad. this blindsided me. it made me incoherent with with rage. catherine straight up stopped watching and let me do the back half on 2x speed.

speaking of seasons 1 and 2, i went and checked and the writer for this episode wrote primarily season 1 and season 2 episodes. they they let this person back i'll never fucking know.

the b plot to this was passable, actually. i liked the pregnant space whale thing even though i thought picard was kind of holding the idiot ball about it. i think it could have been really good in a different episode.

i can't even begin to articulate my thoughts on geordi and leah. it's easily one of the worst examples of star trek aging poorly...in 1991 they had no idea we'd be fighting these battles for real, but today in 2024 we absolutely know it is wrong to use a version of a person's face and body, without their consent, for your own emotional and physical gratification. and the fact that they had kind, easygoing geordi not only do this but then be a huge creep once he met the real woman is already bad, but they didn't even use it as an aesop moment where the moral is not to do that, because even though she yelled at him and told him how violated she felt, she immediately apologized afterwards???

it's just like the barclay episode. fucking real women in the holodecks is embarrassing but not immoral??? but this is totally different from having fantasties in the privacy of your head. he pulled information about her from the fucking computer! christ i'm so glad she turned out to be married. i'm going to try to forgive geordi bc it's not his fault they gave him this shit plot device twice but eeeugh.

night terrors: i literally deserved this. i EARNED this. after the sheer torture of last episode i needed nothing more than whatever the FUCJ this was

firstly for context i had had about two hours of sleep and been awake since 5am while watching this episode. that everyone else in this episode was also profoundly sleep deprived was a source of unending fucking joy to me

i spent half this episode shouting JUST LIKE THOLIAN WEB and then was briefly devastated when it was not in fact the tholians but they delivered in the form of scaring me silly

people hearing things that werent there. picards doorbell pranking him and then the KNOCK AT THE DOOR. the elevator trying to squish picard. SPACE GHOSTS. i was so happy

untill. the scene in the morgue

if you havent watched it then well don't read any further. but beverly is in the morgue and she's looking at all the bodies and then all of a sudden all of them sit up. in the body bags. they moved and they weren't supposed to be moving because they were dead. i may have screamed out loud. i definitely had to pause the episode. i will be thinking about it for the rest of my life. the episode ever. i can never watch it again because what if it's not as good when i've had an adequate amount of sleep? better to leave it as an extremely fond and terrifying memory.

anyway whatever cgi they did to put deanna in that dream was so funny. i hope it looked great in 1991

OH AND I NEARLY FORGOT. her talking worf down from suicide. fueling my riker e deanna e worf ambitions <3

identity crisis: this one was also scary because 1. geordi was with a woman and 2. that invisible shadow thing

luckily the woman brotherzoned geordi within the first 5 seconds (wise) and geordi almost turning into an invisible blacklight guy did a lot to redeem him in my eyes. cuz i dont WANT to dislike him yk thats like the reading rainbow guy

anyway the little invisible shadow in the footage/the holodeck got me bc at first i couldnt even see it. and then i did see it and i got scared about what it belonged to. and then geordi made that little invislbe blob and AAAA it was STANDING THERE even though nobody could SEE IT and i hated when he did it in the holodeck and i hated that planet and

oh yeah everybodys uniforms kept getting shredded. i thought the planet was trying to fuck them or something i didn't like that. but they were just naked bc they had to be naked to be invisible. and i didn't like that either but it was better than the alternate but it was all very frightening

anyway the makeup/special effects in that episode were VERY good, 10/10

TONIGHT: "the nth degree" and "qpid," which i am dreading already <3
