THE GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT PIC BANANZA, PART 1
So lest you think I’ve just been sitting on my laurels over the last few weeks, I’ve actually been working on a set of gift pics for my friends to celebrate the Holidays! Most of these were finished a little while ago but for various reasons I’ve only gotten around to posting them now, so to @elistodragonwings, @omnicenos, @starlitskvader, and @kaikaku, here you all are, with all my love ^_^
Some descriptions under the cut:
@elistodragonwings‘s pic: So OK this came about entirely because, by total chance, I noticed Elisto’s blog description, which she’d edited a couple years back but which I had somehow missed until just recently: “Sonic, Sally, and Social Justice ...and Steven! And Darkwing Duck, who let you back in here?” That last bit tickled me so much that it became something of an in-joke between us, and thus I decided I just had to give it a pic of its own as my gift for her this year XD
@omnicenos‘ pic: I’d originally only seen this as a pic of her OC Konstantin, who’s been getting a lot of attention from her lately (and understandably so, he’s delightful!) and whose Ring Theme felt perfect for a pair of Christmas Wreaths...but I realized as I was developing it that I wanted a second character in there, so I thought I’d add in another of her characters, Therin, who I felt would make for a good contrast in terms of attitude and palette.
@starlitskvader: This one would seem to be self-obvious, and I cannot imagine I’m the first to envision Piers and Marnie in the role of “Demon Slayer”’s beloved Kamado siblings. But given that, during my last visit to GA, @starlitskvader helped finally get me started on the “Demon Slayer” anime, and since I knew her favorite “Pokemon” Character ever was Piers and her favorite “Slayer” characters were the Kamados...well, it all came together.
@kaikaku’s pic: It took me a bit of doing to figure out what I wanted to do with this one, something that felt special and new...but then I realized it didn’t have to be “new” exactly to be worthwhile, so instead I decided to bring Past and Present together, mixing one of the cats from @kaikaku’s old “As of Meow” comics from deviantART with another cat (and their spectral companion) from her “Aughost” pics here on tumblr.

Sonic could scarcely believe his eyes.
Just a moment ago, he and Sally had been falling to what would surely have been their deaths, an attempt to escape from Robotnik with the Chaos Emerald he had attempted to steal that had gone terribly wrong. But then…she had reached out to him. Held him close. He had returned her embrace.
Then there came a light.
It seemed to burst forth from the gem, pouring over Sally like a blossoming fire. But rather than consume her, this flame…this power…had wrapped around her in an embrace of its own. It had flared and flashed, and then it seemed as if time had stopped.
When it resumed? Sonic found himself safe in Sally’s arms.
And Sally was floating in the air, hovering well above the jagged and unforgiving stones they had nearly crashed into. Even more striking, her eyes were now a burning red, while her fur and hair seemed to be standing on end, glowing the same shade of pure, radiant gold as the light which now pulsed all around her, an aura that seemed to crackle with a life of its own. “Sal…” Sonic was just barely able to whisper out, staring at her with rapt attention.
“Are…are you…OK…?” the princess asked, ears flicking as she heard her own voice. There was an echo to it now, as if she were speaking at once from right where she was and all around them at the same time.
It took him a moment, but Sonic nodded, a bit more eagerly than he had perhaps intended. “Are you?” he then asked.
Sally took a slow breath. “I…I think so…” she answered. “I’m not in any pain, at least.” She closed her eyes, letting out a low breath, though this too carried that strange echo. “We…we should get moving. The emerald’s been secured, and Robotnik’ll probably be after us before too long, so…!”
She went quiet as the hedgehog gently reached out to her, putting a hand to her cheek. “Not that I miss the irony?” he said with a little chuckle. “But given the circumstances, I think you need t’slow down a bit here, Sal.”
She couldn’t help but laugh a bit at that, pressing her head to his and letting Sonic bathe in the gentle warmth coming off her whole body. He pressed back happily. “…what does it feel like?” Sonic asked softly.
They looked at each other then, both smiling a little. “I’m…not sure there are words for it…” Sally said; a little smirk formed on her face as she continued, “but since you’re taking a page out of my book, maybe I can take a page out of yours.”
The princess’ eyes slowly drifted upwards. “Maybe I can show you.”
And then they began to rise. Higher and higher, away from the cliff side they had fallen from…past the mountain tops and the setting sun. A trail of glimmering little lights twinkling behind in Sally’s wake, and Sonic wrapped an arm around her, holding tight as he felt the familiar chill of the winds washing over him. But as they flew more, he soon realized how different this was from his own speed…how much more free. The lush purple sky began to open up to them as they rose through the air, Sally’s golden light guiding their way, fitting in perfectly amongst the many stars that began to reveal themselves as they pierced through the clouds.
But even with all these unique, gorgeous, incredible sights to see, Sonic found his eyes kept wandering to Sally. And in truth, hers did the same for him. They both smiled at each other, the light around them growing a bit brighter, the warmth a bit stronger.
Together, they soared off toward the horizon.

The role reversal of Sally carrying Sonic is an interesting idea and I really like the dramatic sweep of the angle: Sonic and Sally running toward the viewer with laser fire coming in from off-screen makes for a VERY exciting scene!

AoStH/SatAM 25th Anniversary Charity Fanzine, Artist List!

Hello everyone, sorry for the lack of news on the zine front. However we are steadily reaching the end! As of writing I have 23 pages in hand, with several more nearing completion! We’ve had a couple of dropouts and changes along the way, and we may have to find up to 5 replacement artists within the next few days. I’ll post more details on that tomorrow. However, I hope to get the project finished by mid to late October and off to print. I think Todd plays a more important role in Nimona than just to be the annoying bully for viewers to hate. His overt bad behavior removes any possible rational basis someone could claim for the Director's absolute faith in the superiority of the noble class as knights.
Without Todd, the only other high status knight we'd get to know is Ambrosius, who, for all his faults, is still largely the kind of upstanding person knights are "supposed" to be. Without Todd, it would be possible to imagine a world where the Director has only ever worked with knights like Ambrosius and thus is perhaps naive.
But instead we have Todd, openly acting terrible in a way the Director can't miss, indeed, she *doesn't* miss it, even commenting on his behavior directly, and yet her faith in the system and her distrust of commoners doesn't change.
Todd exists to show how evidence alone doesn't hold up to blind faith and fear of others. And this makes sense. The world of Nimona isn't a metaphor for America as a whole, but for the America that exists under evangelical and fundamentalist Christianity, which rejects reason and openness to others and the possibility that it might be wrong, instead favoring obedience to tradition and heirarchy and conclusions-first reasoning. Todd's existence reveals through the Director just how dangerous valuing faith and belief above all else can be.

I am concerned that people seem to be flattening Oppressor/Oppressed into an alternate way of just saying someone is Evil/Good. These are not the same concepts.
Oppression deals with systems of who has power over another. It is not a character judgement because someone who is oppressed can still do things that are bad or evil. That does not make their oppression valid. Likewise, a person could potentially oppress others out of ignorance. That they are not acting out of evil intent or malice does not justify the oppression.
That a system of oppression can be described as evil does not mean that the victim is inherently good. Oppression is bad regardless of who the oppressed is.
