As for myself, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. The creature spared our lives, and in return I honored her with my absolute silence. Some things, no matter how magnificent they are, are best left alone. And as to whether I'd ever see her again, the answer is yes. But that's another story.

When Kenshi, Jonnhy, Kung Lao and Reader (female or GN, if you don't like writing a female reader) go after Shang Tsung and arrive at the Tarkatan camp, while the three men are fighting against the soldiers and Tarkatans, the reader is chasing Shang Tsung when her attention is diverted by a soldier hurting a child (orphan or with parents also infected). The reader, instead of continuing his pursuit, decides to save the child, calming him down (perhaps in a very maternal way?), picking him up without fear (may or may not know about the infection, and have immunity?) and return to the camp. And then the attraction of Baraka would begin.
request by @multiverse-fandoms-2001
❝ [kind, even to monsters] ❞
✦ oneshot : baraka x fem!reader
(♡) synopsis: During the event of trying to capture Shang Tsung, your pursuit was halted as a child infected with tarkat was seen being harmed. You stopped everything to help him and someone had witnessed your kind actions. . . but why help people like them?
a/n: Hiii lovely! I enjoyed writing this, but I'm a bit worried it was not what you asked for. I hope you like it and please, tell me if I did anything wrong. Thank you and I appreciate the request!
Tumblr media
*ੈ✩‧₊˚ "Y/n! Go after Shang Tsung, we can handle this here!" Kenshi yelled from across the field.
You nodded and quickly chased after the creature you were sure Shang Tsung had shifted into. You tried your best swerving past as many as you could. Many of them trying to attack from all sides. It was troublesome to say the least, but just as you were about to snag a hand around Shang's arm, a small child-like scream could be heard.
Your feet dug into the ground as your head shot in the direction of the scream. One of Shang's soldiers had a sword held up to one of the child creatures. You hissed and made a dash toward the two, your body crashing into the child just as he swung his blade down.
A guttural scream leaves your throat, the sword cutting open a large gash into your calf.
The soldier glared at you as you tried to crawl away from him with the child in your arms. The kid had no idea who you were, but couldn't help but cling to your body as your arms shielded him. "It's okay," You whispered. "It's okay, everything is going to be alright." Your hand caressed the little boy's head in an attempt to comfort him.
Your breathe hitched, arms tightening around the boy as you watched the soldier raise his blade above his head, ready to swing down on you.
You heard the boy crying into your shoulder and all you could do was whisper comforting words as you prepared for the swing. However, it never came. Another one of those creatures had came just in time to stab the soldier dead.
Unable to be sure whether he would attack you next, you refrained from putting down your guard.
"I will do you no harm." He says.
You squinted your eyes at him until the footsteps of your teammates came rushing forward from behind.
"He's right, we made an agreement." Kenshi says, but pauses as he notices your bleeding leg. "Y/n! What happened?!"
You groan a little, the little boy still huddled in your arms. "I'm sorry, I let Shang Tsung escape... I just couldn't-"
Baraka steps forward, his eyes holding a look of confusion. "She had saved one of our own." He says.
Kenshi and the others all look down to see the young tarkatan in your arms.
You revealed the boy with a small smile. "I couldn't just let a child get hurt...you understand right?"
Kenshi nods, slowly wrapping a fabric around your leg. "It's okay, we can still track him down. You should be more careful though."
The young tarkatan had left your arms, running toward Baraka. Baraka knelt down and made sure the boy was unharmed.
"You are unharmed?" He asks the kid. The young tarkatan nods and then turns slightly to see you being tended by Kenshi. "That woman...why did she help me, we're monsters aren't we?" The boy casts a forlorn look to the ground. Baraka frowns and pats the boy's head.
"I do not know. She is. . .an odd one"
The boy's eyes flicker to you once again before leaving to his own parents. Baraka watches him leave and then turns back to the earthrealmers and after conversing with them, he had agreed to lead them to Shang Tsung's laboratory in hopes of aiding their mission.
And ever since that event, you couldn't help but notice how Baraka would stare at you. Especially during your walk to Shang Tsung's laboratory. Even after that, during the incident of being captured and thrown into a cell. He seemed to hover over you. You noticed how he would strike down opponents who would steer too close to you and give you a nod of acknowledgement every time.
Now, as you walked through the forest of souls, Baraka let you lean on his body to support your leg with Kung Lao and Johnny aiding Kenshi.
Baraka didn't spare you any glances this time. His gaze only forward. You so badly wanted to speak to him, your eyes glued to your feet as you limped. You pursed your lips and finally mustered up the courage to speak to the tarkatan. "I should thank you." You say softly.
"For what." His raspy voice reaches your ears, yet as rough a it sounded, he bore no malice in it.
You smile a little. " You saved me from one of Shang's soldiers back there. And not only that... I've noticed you've been protecting me. Is there a reason why?"
Baraka let's out a low growl. "You are a strange woman. Never once have I seen someone risk their lives to save us."
"You mean tarkatans?" You quirk a brow.
"Yes."
You hum. "I don't see why not. It's not like you guys chose to be infected. It's not right to disregard your lives because of it, plus, I couldn't let a child die. Whether that child is of a different species, infected, or just different . . . a child is a child."
Baraka's eyes finally meet yours and you suddenly felt embarrassed by his gaze. "A strange woman indeed, but admirable." He notes. "I did what I did because I felt drawn to your presence. I had never seen what you did before happen."
A warm wave rushed to your face. You didn't know why, but something about Baraka started to draw you to him too. "I see." You say.
It was then, after everything, you would be heading back home with your friends along with two new allies, Syzoth and Ashrah.
Your eyes lingered on the tarkatan as he turned to head back to his colony and your feet began to move on it's own, rushing after the man.
"Baraka wait!" Your hand grips onto his wrist. His red orbs turn to look into your own, waiting for you to speak.
"I," You hesitate for a moment. "It was nice getting to meet you, perhaps one day, we could meet again... under different circumstances."
He nods. "Yes, I agree."
"And," You end up grabbing both of his hands this time, holding them in your own. There was a notable difference in the size of your hands and you felt embarrassed once again. "I would like to get to know you more the next time we meet. . . in a more meaningful matter."
If Baraka could look just as embarrassed as you, he would, but his face had remained unmoved.
"I would love that." He says, thumbs brushing over your hands. Even his ears looked slightly more upwards, somewhat like a happy cat. "I will be awaiting your visit, y/n."
You smile and bow, leaving to catch up with the others.
Johnny's eyes flash between you and Baraka's departing figure, a disturbed look on his face. "Don't tell me that you and-"
"Shut it Cage." You hiss.
He raises his hands up in defense. "Okay crazy lady, whatever floats your boat."

Dead boy Detectives review
Tumblr media
I've watched all eight episodes of Dead Boy Detectives and it was a decent show. It's not something I may obsess over like The Sandman, or The Witcher, but it was decent.
Dead Boy Detectives is the story of Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland. Edwin was killed during a Satanic ritual in 1916. Charles died from hypothermia and internal bleeding after some bullies drove him into an ice-cold lake while throwing rocks at him.
(Note: That was not how Charles actually died in the source material. In the comics, Lucifer had quit and shut down Hell (the basis for the TV show Lucifer) so many evil souls returned to Earth, including the boys that sacrificed poor Edwin. They badly burnt Charles' back on a hot stove and Charles died from his injuries.)
The two ghosts decided to dedicate their afterlife solving mysteries to help other ghosts find peace. They are aided by psychic, Crystal Palace, who is haunted by her abusive ex-boyfriend who happens to be a demon.
Both Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland originated in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman: Season of Mists, The Sandman: Volume 4. Issue 25 of The Sandman comics, and within Act 2 of The Sandman audio drama.
The Dead Boy Detectives made their TV first appearance in Doom Patrol for HBO Max (now Max). During a shakeup at Max the show was moved over to Netflix as to better connect it with The Sandman since that is where they originated.
The show features different actors from the ones that played Charles and Edwin on Doom Patrol.
The Dead Boy Detectives is a decent show but ...it feels a bit like a CW teen drama. I had been told that some of the show's writers were originally writers for the CW... and it shows.
There are some deliberately surreal elements of the show that I think are a callback to their appearance in Doom Patrol.
I love the variety of supernatural entities in the show, including the appearance of two of Morpheus's siblings. Death and Despair. The things I don't like about the show can be considered CW tropes or cliches. The angsty romances and unrequited love. The ham-fisted abusive ex metaphor between Crystal and David The Demon.
And of course the most tedious of CW tropes, the end of the episode pining and angst while a sad pop song plays in the background.
If you look past the CW-ness of it, the show is enjoyable.
The only other things I can complain about is the "connecting thread" subplot of The Afterlife: Lost and Found feels like unnecessary filler. And I wish they would openly establish that Edwin, being an innocent, would NOT return to Hell if collected by Death now. I don't think that should be left hanging over his head. Especially since we're supposed to see Death as a kind entity. Also I think Charles says "Aces" a little too much. It's very distracting and makes me feel like the writers didn't know much late 80s English slang. It would be like if he was an American and they had him say "Radical" all the time. I get that it's kind of his catchphrase but it also got a bit annoying.
The parts I don't like are CW tropes and what I'd consider to be late 90s Vertigo edginess.
The thing I liked were plentiful though. The protagonists were and are likable. The ending is satisfying enough so that if there is only one season this was still good. I liked that it appears that one can ascend out of Hell after some self-reflection as is indicated by the boy Edwin confronted in Hell. The blue light was established to mean ascension, a good afterlife.
I also LOVE the opening credits theme music and animated sequence. It reminds me of the intro to Showtime's Creature Feature movies. (See the trailer for 2001's She Creature, not the 50s version. Watch the trailer at thirteen seconds in, on Youtube, and you'll see what I mean).
That's two Gothic themed shows from Netflix in the last two years with great opening credits sequences. The first being Wednesday. That one won Danny Elfman an Emmy.
It's funny, Wednesday and Dead Boy Detectives (which is a spin-off of The Sandman) have great opening credit intro sequences but The Sandman does not. Apparently Neil Gaiman was told people don't watch the opening credits anymore so The Sandman doesn't have them.
I feel we were cheated out of what could have been a great opening sequence for The Sandman.
Episodes 7 and 8 of Dead Boy Detectives were probably the best of the series. I liked it well enough that if Dead Boy Detectives gets renewed I'll happily watch season 2.

Creatures of the earth, of space, sea and land. I'm Exuma, the Obeah Man.
This version of Ocarina of Time Link was inspired by @phoenix-arts7's @houseofheroesau because he's just...SO PRETTY.
I think I've gotten to the root of why I'm so obsessed with Zelda characters dancing. My grandma lived with us off and on from about 97 to 2001. She'd watch us play video games - particularly Ocarina of Time - and tell us stories. One story in particular I loved about the Obeah Man danced around her village until his feet bled.
Now my Grandmother wasn't Jamaican, or raised in a village and I'm pretty sure she was actually telling an Anansi Story she only partially remembered and it changed almost every time except one part: The Obeah Man danced outside of the village for days because he wanted to protect the village and everytime you see some moving in the corner of your eye, it's him keeping you and your family safe.
Bloodless and Negative Space versions under the cut.

listening and learning. the future has always been female
by Michael Roppolo
June 8, 2023 / 1:32 PM / CBS News
Researchers have identified the first known case of a crocodile making herself pregnant — and producing a fetus that was genetically identical to herself. The findings were published Wednesday by a team led by evolutionary biologist Warren Booth from Virginia Tech in Biology Letters, a journal published by the Royal Society.
In 2018, officials with the Parque Reptilandia in Costa Rica found 14 eggs in a female's enclosure. The crocodile had been in isolation since the age of 2, yet she still managed to lay a clutch of eggs at 18.
"Given the period of isolation from mates, these would normally be considered non-viable and discarded," the researchers wrote. But the officials gathered seven eggs that appeared viable and kept them in an incubator.
There were several signs that one of the eggs may be viable, Booth told CBS News.
"Viable eggs are often bright white, whereas infertile may be more yellowish," he said. "When held up to a flashlight, viable crocodile eggs will have a distinct band, whereas non-viable will simply glow yellow."
Costa Rica officials reached out to experts in the U.S. for consultation — ones that specialized in parthenogenesis. The term is derived from the Greek words "parthenos," meaning "virgin," and "genesis," meaning "origin," according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
Booth, and co-author Gordon Schuett of Georgia State University, had published multiple papers on the topic. As such, they were the "go-to people," Booth told CBS News.
Once considered rare, so-called virgin births have been documented among various species — including sawfish, snakes, sharks, and birds. The process, which is more common in the plant and insect worlds, allows a female organism to replicate itself without fertilization from a male.
In 2021, a study found that California condors can have virgin births. Researchers with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said genetic testing confirmed that two male chicks that hatched in 2001 and 2009 from unfertilized eggs were related to their mothers. Neither was related to a male. In 2019, an anaconda housed with two other females gave birth. DNA testing would later confirm that the anaconda babies were reproduced through parthenogenesis.
In the case of the crocodile in Costa Rica, three months after workers found the eggs, none had hatched and only one egg was found to have a fully formed but nonviable fetus. DNA analysis would later determine that the fetus was 99.9% genetically identical to its mother.
Virgin births could be happening in crocodiles without anyone realizing, according to the researchers.
"These findings, therefore, suggest that eggs should be assessed for potential viability when males are absent," they wrote.
The authors suggest that in these cases among reptiles, birds, and now crocodiles, there may be a common evolutionary origin.
"This discovery offers tantalizing insights into the possible reproductive capabilities of the extinct archosaurian relatives of crocodilians and birds, notably members of Pterosauria and Dinosauria," they write, referring to flying reptiles that have been described as "close cousins" of dinosaurs.
Booth told CBS News that crocodiles are at the base of a lineage known as the archosaurs, with the most recent members being birds. All of these creatures use the same complex form of parthenogenesis, or terminal fusion automixis. It is unlikely they all developed independently.
"The cool aspect is that in between crocodiles and birds are the pterosaurs and dinosaurs," he added. "Given that all of these lineages use the same mechanism, it is highly likely that pterosaurs and dinosaurs also had the capacity to produce parthenogenetically."

Watching Alien 9 - how it's perceived and what it wanted to say
Warnings for themes of abuse and implied sexual assault.
Tumblr media
Two things before I start: I watched the subbed version of this, and also there are only 4 episodes if you want to check it out yourself, it’s very short.
I started watching Alien 9 basically knowing nothing about it. It's an older anime, released back in 2001 so there isn't much internet discussion about it for each episode. But I remember watching it slowly realizing there’s a lot to unpack here. The art direction is beautiful and the dialogue is actually really strong. I went out of my way to look for analysis I could find on the internet because there was a lot that I couldn’t really put into words… but I very quickly came across an ongoing issue.
I guess this is probably a common problem with a lot of media that came out before the internet became the juggernaut that it has become today. The discussion you tend to find doesn’t seem to be very cleaned up or very nuanced - a lot of it is also probably lost to time with discussion forums and personal websites shutting down. But all I saw were really outdated remarks, like “oh kasumi’s the lolicon" and "this is pedo bait”, etc. It was gross and frustrating. So I wanted to talk about it in-depth.
The anime is initially presented to be a cute slice-of-life anime. Set in a regular school with a sci-fi twist, it gives off a cheery sweet vibe, but even from the very beginning, there was always such an off vibe to it all. With the music fluctuating between cute and off-kilter and discordant. Every shot feels vaguely oppressive, trying to hide something that should be immediately within your line of sight if you were there yourself. You immediately get a sense that something is wrong.
Tumblr media
Not to mention so many silent shots of this looming, grotesque-looking alien pod that looms over the school with weapons.
Tumblr media
Someone commented that the OST for this anime like “a child with anxiety” which is such a great way to describe it! It’s filled with lots of very juvenile, bouncy tunes (like lots of recorders and kazoos and xylophones and horns), even with motifs that sound similar to nursery rhymes like “Mary Had a Little Lamb” but in a minor key. It gives a very jaunty feeling while distinctly feeling off. I think it also has a very soldierly, elementary school vibe to it - like the sound of a bell and young students chanting together in unison like a military cadence. There are instances of kids singing as a choir, giving a religious, holy aspect to certain tracks. It also mixes in synthy, crazy bonker wet sounding and snappy sound samples for the alien feel of it all. It’s erratic. And it’s so cohesive!! I really don’t know much about music composition, but it’s so distinctive to fit the narrative and themes of the show and I love it. Check it out if you’re interested, it’s so funky: [x]
Tumblr media
The show focuses on three 12-year-old girls, being tasked with capturing and subduing aliens  with guns, roller skates, and symbiotic aliens that are attached to their heads and feed on their body fluids. Yeah. That’s a bit overwhelming.
Tumblr media
And Yuri Otani, the main character, gets so much shit for hating it. She was forced into it, in a very isolating method of basically the entire classroom ganging up to all vote for her to join (no one wanted to join themselves). The other two, Kumi and Kasumi, are very competent in their own way, which makes Yuri’s inability to capture these very understandably disturbing, pulsating creatures look foolish in comparison.
Tumblr media
She cries. Yuri cries a lot. She’s already had a very overwhelming fear with anything that pertains to aliens and left to her own devices she collapses, faints, shudders, wails, and shuts down throughout the entire show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And understandably so, it’s creepy and gross and absolutely horrid! It doesn’t get any better!! But everyone around her acts like fighting these aliens are completely normal. Her peers are passive about her distress. Her one kind classmate friend tells her it’s not that bad because of the emergency perks. The adults around her tell her to just stick it out. The other two peers in the alien fighter club frankly have their own concerns and it’s more than just a bit of a liability that Yuri can barely defend herself at all.
Yuri in turn struggles with depression every moment she isn’t fighting aliens. She can't get out of bed in the morning. She zones out, at home and at work. It’s very resonant with me, because that kind of depression is debilitating and takes over so much of your life - you’re seen as lazy when really, you quite literally can’t function unless someone firmly and continuously forces you to do something. It’s upsetting to watch.
There are invasive, sexual overtones to this story. A lot of people have likened it to an allegory of puberty where your body is rapidly changing and just in general everything feels very confusing and upsetting. Being taken advantage of because you aren’t experienced. The danger that these adults put these children in and tell them just to figure it out or basically die trying, is very reminiscent of a lot of real societal pressure for kids to grow up with very little emotional support. To “toughen” them up, because one day they have to face this big scary world alone. It’s uncomfortable and it gets worse as the story progresses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t want to get into it too much, but there is an allegorical gang rape scene that occurs to Yuri in episode 2. The Hunt club advisor already recognized that she was struggling with alien capturing and was instructed to feed the aliens alone, without the help of the other two members to keep her safe. There, three boys who willingly attached aliens to their head and have had this odd fixation on Yuri for several days, find her all alone. It’s violent. Their drills are overtly phallic themed. I can’t get over the haunting statement of her friend calling her “miss popular” just a few hours beforehand. Their attention was NEVER wanted and that framing is so unsettling to me, like the way people say women who were sexually assaulted were “asking for it”. It’s one of the most disturbing parts of the whole show.
Tumblr media
It’s repulsive what they do to her. And her pain is destructive not to herself, but everyone around her.
Tumblr media
And how she immediately collapses when she sees the one person that has always been the closest thing to emotional support throughout the entire show.
Tumblr media
There are very human moments in the show, when there are people that show signs of affection that they didn’t have to do, but did it because they cared about her and it makes all the difference.
Yuri’s one friend Miyu always waits to walk home with her. The alien capturing duties are very isolating from the rest of the school, and forces Yuri to stay very late after everybody leaves. But Miyu waits long hours, and at the end of the day, excitedly meets up with her. She invites Yuri to go shopping with her. It’s very obvious she looks forward to the time they spend together.
(E.g. Miyu reading the shopping manual, passing a note to Yuri in class, the way she runs up to meet Yuri when she’s free. It’s so sweet.)
Tumblr media
You can even see the beams almost being prison bars that Yuri is momentarily free from. She’s the reason why Yuri gets enough courage and resolve to try her best again with alien fighting and bonding with the others of her own accord. It shows a lot about Yuri’s desire to do well with the insane tasks and responsibilities her adults give her, even when no one else notices.
The other two members of the alien capturing club are Kumi and Kasumi.
Tumblr media
And though they help Yuri out, it’s definitely a little of a drag for them. Kumi in particular has this deep rooted anger when Yuri begs for help. Her own situation at home reminds her that she is constantly relied on; to be the good sport, to be the mature one in every situation and make all the decisions for everyone.
Tumblr media
“I don’t feel like being nice. Not anymore.
[...]
You know something? I was the class leader from grade one onward. Being class leader sucks. All you do is look after other people and you even have to be responsible for what they do. I always got stuck doing all the crappy jobs. That's why I have this position now. So nobody can say to me ‘YOU be the leader.’ Back off and take care of your own problems.” - Kumi
Tumblr media
You can even see her wardrobe tends to be clothes that make her more mature than she actually is, especially her black turtleneck. But she’s just a kid, too.
And to her, Yuri is another pathetic whiny colleague asking for her help. Again. And she’s tired.
Tumblr media
Kasumi's own narrative definitely is its own disturbing, isolated situation. She’s seen to be the least upset out of the three of them in the whole series, always with a level head and a smile on her face. She’s a prodigy, and seemingly enjoys what she does. She loves everything - sports, playing music, scoring high on tests. But you can see how it feels rather empty, how she’s put herself in this situation to constantly affirm to all the adults in her life that she is well adjusted and super talented. I get the feeling she was not given the love and attention really needed as a child, and did everything she could to get some form of acknowledgement. Notably, her big brother who is noticeably absent the entire time. For… disturbingly what was implicated to be because of incest and grooming. She never quite recovers from the yellowknife alien taking advantage of her unhealthy dependency on him, as they weren’t able to save her before it symbiotically fused with her.
Tumblr media
It's not until the traumatic incident Yuri goes through that it’s revealed that the three of them are emotionally bound and feel Yuri’s distress as if it's their own. It’s startling, like they realize that they all experienced that same terror individually, but Yuri’s is much more paralyzing. And understanding that distress, they become particularly protective about her. They only have each other that can ever fully understand what they’re going through at the moment. A classmate couldn’t ever really see that, and Kumi and Kasumi become the people in Yuri’s life that truly empathize with the situation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and with all of them, Yuri SHINES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every time there is a kindness that someone extends to her, her eyes light up. She goes quiet and says, “I think I can stick this out, I think I can keep fighting for a little while longer” and god honestly it makes me feel so weepy. Being shown even one ounce of love, one little action that says “I want you to be here with me,” it gives so much weight to her as a person, someone that keeps her being like. I don’t know! Just a little kid!! Doing random kid stuff!!! It’s genuinely healing and the things they do to coax her out of her shell just a little bit brings levity of the show and moments that she can feel safe again.
You also really get to see as she’s encouraged to get over her fears on a much lower level of danger (swimming in an ocean, running through a “haunted” shrine) with her friends. Even when she’s heavily reminded of her traumatic experiences, she can always run away, back to her friends' arms.
Tumblr media
Notice I didn’t point out her advisor leading the alien capturing duties, because she obviously has no real care towards these kids. It’s honestly a little insidious, because every adult Yuri comes in contact with is female, and have this like, motherly/teacher tone that can SOUND nice and polite, but it’s cold. It’s distant. The three go through harrowing experiences and all the advisor can focus on is her job, and what it means for her. Just that it’s just a nuisance to her.
“This is strange. I didn’t ask for this. I wonder if it got here by attaching itself to a spaceship. I haven’t even finished checking everyone’s summer homework. This is the last thing I needed!”
Tumblr media
Obviously, that doesn’t even begin to talk about how she and the other adults are not transparent at all and have hidden intentions for the girls.
And I want to get into that as a narrative with the discussion online, because holy FUCK.
It’s time to talk about the obvious Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE) inspiration that touches the show, from the stark compositions and beautiful animation and notably, how the main character is struggling with depression and the overwhelming responsibility that’s piled onto him. It’s honestly such an interesting comparison to me especially since the two main characters are in starkly different (yet overwhelming) situations. While Shinji is a 16-year-old boy, Yuri is a 12-year-old girl and their societal expectations based on each identity sets them apart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone really loves to compare Shinji and Yuri, even going so far as to say “Alien 9 is basically just NGE.” God. That’s a bit reductive of a comparison. You can see the way they talk about both of them, how useless and crybaby and whiny they both are perceived to be by this audience.
Tumblr media
They call Yuri “bitchy”, they call her “useless crybaby”, they call her stupid and moronic, but most importantly, they say she has 0 character development throughout the entire show. I want to take a second to process that, because trauma does NOT equal character development.
And finally, I want to talk about one of the most casually unsettling parts of the show for me, personally:
Yuri’s teacher notices that she’s distracted and detached. She can’t focus on school. And her assumption?
Tumblr media
That she’s thinking about summer vacation. And then, in the very next scene, Yuri asks to quit the alien capturing duties because she can’t take it anymore - and the teacher says THIS.
Tumblr media
The hypocrisy and apathy in these two scenes. The way adults pretend they care but also assume every sign of distress means you're just lazy. It’s heartwrenching. Which one is it? Stop relaxing, or don’t be so uptight? It’s maddening to me. To change the narrative to suit your own assumptions about this child because really, Yuri doesn’t have a choice in the matter. And she continues to collapse under the weight of these responsibilities, and continue to be locked into something that she is completely incapable of handling.
Yuri is so overwhelmed all she can do is shut down and cry and everyone just tells her to get over it like one day she'll snap and do her job no problem like she's not going through the most harrowing shit no one should ever go through ever in their lives. And she ends up screwing up more and more because they keep withdrawing all support to "toughen her up". They NEVER take her seriously, they never let her breathe because she's just a little crybaby girl who doesn't know what's best for her and it just keeps getting worse.
And that’s what is so haunting to me, to see such a common response from the audience watching this same show, to sound exactly like these adults. To take away from the show that Yuri is useless and bratty and should have snapped and fought back at one point, like a main protagonist in a hero’s journey converting their trauma into a badass version of themselves or something. I don’t know, there’s something to be said about how these tone deaf reviews were written and discussed by cis men, while one of the few blog posts I actually liked about Alien 9 was posted in 2021 by two women. There’s a bit of a whiplash to how people received this show on the internet based on who was watching and when.
Anyway, there’s still way more to unpack in terms of the other characters in the show, but I’ll leave it here. Alien 9 in all of its flaws and open-ended questions deserves to be engaged head on. It has its flaws and due to cancellation and budget cuts, was forced to leave on a cliffhanger on its fourth and final episode. A lot was left open.
But it had a very particular set tone from the beginning, and there was a lot of deliberate intention behind their creative decisions. I’m tired of seeing people say “it’s sooo weird” and “they didn’t know what they were doing” for discussion. It’s definitely a show I keep thinking about on and off again.

"Starling. Starling. Starling. A bird with strong wings and feet, capable of flying great distances. Often bears a dark complexion with a vague, metallic sheen coating it's feathers... as if it were dipped in oil. Wouldn't you agree, Clarice?"
"Well, of that I'm not sure, sir. I don't think I've ever seen one; none that I would be able to identify, at least."
"An interesting creature - most phylum cordata usually are. Are you at all interested in the study of species?"
"Sure, I guess, but not of the animal variety, Doctor Lecter."
"Ahh, because there are different species of human, right you are. Is that why you chose to become a figure of law enforcement, Clarice? To study the sea of moral defecation around you, and to try to cleanse the world of it?"
"Mm, when you say it like that, it sounds more like you're describing a scientist, to me. Or maybe a doctor."
"But we are all scientists to our own right, aren't we, Clarice? And doctors are really just glorified scientists, schooled to understand the inner workings of something and to try to find medically accurate compensation where there is a lack. Officers of the law do this as well, but not in the biological sense - more so in the social sense. They weed out those cancerous forms that attempt to spread evil unto the world; cut them out with the steel scalpel of To protect and serve. This requires some science, Clarice. You have done your own studying of the world."
"I have. We all have, sir."
"Sir. Doctor Lecter. So polite. Society lacks manners, nowadays. It's only gonna get worse from here."
"Not a very positive outlook for the future."
"I have hopes, but not high ones for society. Can you really blame me, Clarice? What with people like Buffalo Bill wreaking havoc in different parts of this cruel world?"
"With all do respect, Doctor, one could look at your actions and say the same."
"Mmm, clever girl. Too clever. You don't agree to fight violence with violence? Survival of the fittest? You'd likely lay your body down to form a bridge for those less fortunate, Clarice, and they would end up collapsing you to climb their 'lil selves on up that laddah."
"But you can't fight fire with fire, either, sir. There has to be some sort of balance."
"And if they're not willing to compromise, Clarice? If they are not as sympathetic as you, then what?"
"I guess I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it."
"Starling. Birds are quite impressive creatures, aren't they? The starling itself isn't widely known, but it is a clever little creature indeed. Strong little wings, sturdy feet with which to stand. It also has the ability to mimic the sounds of other animals that it hears - sometimes even the vocal sounds of humans."
"This is very interesting, Doctor Lecter, but I'd really like to get back on topic."
"Does it sound like I'm describing you, Clarice? Do you repeat the things you hear from higher-ups in the department? Has Jack Crawford made you his puppet?"
"What do you think, Doctor? You've studied me at every meeting. Do my words sound like they've been scripted? Do they sound like they would ever come out of Jack Crawford's mouth?"
"No, Agent Starling, they do not. You are indeed a creature all your own."
"So if I am a Starling, sir, what are you?"
"That depends on you, Clarice. I am either the cage keeper, or the one who opens the door and sets you free. The choice is yours."

"Clarice?"
Her face hurt; felt like it was being mushed against a hard surface. The voice broke through the darkness she had fallen into, and now she was slowly coming back to the world of consciousness, very slowly.
"Clarice,"
She groaned with the effort of opening her eyes; her head felt as heavy as a bowling ball on her thin neck as she tried to raise it. When her eyes fluttered and focused, she noticed the light brown of the smooth top of her desk to the right of her vision. Lifting her head more, she realized it had been resting on the black and white mug shot of Hannibal Lecter in an old newspaper. She'd actually fallen asleep while working. All throughout school she hadn't even done that.
"Jesus," Came a female voice from behind her - probably Ardelia wondering where the hell her partner had been.
Clarice lifted her head all the way up off the desk, wisps from her ponytail sticking to the side of her face that had been covering the newspaper. She absently wiped a hand across her cheek, wondering if it would come away with gray smudges from the newspaper that were probably printed onto her face. Being so close to Doctor Lecter's mugshot on the paper, she noticed that the two dimensionality of the black and white photo did nothing to diminish his stare. It was as if he was staring into the soul of whomever was holding the paper - like he was staring into her soul once again.
Clarice turned around in her chair to face the woman whom she roomed with, Ardelia. Ardelia had graduated the academy shortly after Clarice had, and until they could each afford their own stable homes, they decided to share an apartment to help build their individual savings. They knew each other well - they'd survived the academy as roommates and knew they could live with one another (and only wanted to kill each other on rare occasions). They were now best friends, and knew almost everything about each other, so Ardelia was probably not surprised that even on their day off, Clarice was still working.
The other woman would have only been surprised if it was any other case she was working on.
"Girl, you look rough," Ardelia commented, not unkindly. Rather than suggest food or rest (or a therapist), she knew Clarice well enough to know that those questions would not phase her. Instead she asked: "Any leads?" Clarice appreciated her for everything she said - she knew the other woman was only looking out for her.
"Um," Clarice looked down at the small drool stain slowly seeping into the paper right next to Doctor Lecter's mug shot. "Not yet, today." She rose from the chair and stretched, groaning as her neck cracked from being at the odd angle when her face rested against the desk. How long had she been like that? "Any idea what time it is?" Apparently she'd removed her watch at some point too. God, she was never this disoriented.
"A little after twelve," Ardelia had checked her own watch, peering around Clarice at the desktop. She, herself, was all dressed up - dressy casual in nice black pants and a sweeping flowery top. Clarice had known she had a date this morning - brunch at a little diner in town with another agent that had graduated from the academy.
"How'd it go this morning?" She'd been out with this guy a few times, and Clarice could sense a brewing romance.
"Great," Ardelia replied, picking up the newspaper that lay flat on the desktop, "We're gonna catch a movie later tonight too." She moved the paper closer to her eyes, then brought it back down almost as soon. "He's one hell of a creep, huh?"
Clarice nodded, remembering back to the first time she had met him; the way he calmly stood in the middle of the cell, staring through the glass like he'd been expecting someone. The way his eyes lit up when they settled on hers - like he'd been expecting her.
Ardelia gave an exaggerated shudder and set the paper back down on the desk. "How do you not have nightmares?"
Clarice glanced at the photo, shrugging non-committedly, "I guess I'm just used to it now."
The truth was, she did have nightmares - she just didn't believe that he was the source. Most of the time it was the death of her father; the lambs screaming in terror as they were lead to the slaughter. It didn't happen every night, but enough that she had become used to waking up in the middle of the night, the blankets drenched with her sweat and tears rolling down her cheeks.
The only one she'd ever told about that was Hannibal Lecter. He was the only person in her life who'd ever thought to ask such dark questions.
What she also hadn't told Ardelia was that she did dream of him. Every single night. Not all of them were nightmares, though he somehow wound up in those as well. Sometimes it was simply her walking down the long stretch of concrete in the basement of the asylum; past the jeering, howling inmates in their cells. Some of the cells had lambs in them - some of the inmates were holding little lambs, and that was why they were screaming. Clarice knew he was at the end of the hallway; she just had to walk past this chaos to get to him. Finally, as always, he was waiting there, much like he had been the very first time she'd seen him, except he was much closer to the glass this time. He was awaiting her arrival, and she was anticipating the sight of him. He would smile salaciously at her, and raise a hand to the glass, pressing his palm against it. Stepping closer to the glass, she would raise her own hand and mirror his movement, placing it over his as though there was no glass between them. They would stay like that for three seconds, looking each other right in the eye. He would smile, and she would feel her lips begin to do the same. And then she would wake up.
At the moment, that dream was the most recurring in her mind. She couldn't remember what she had just dreamt about when she'd been asleep a few moments ago, but she would bet her life he had been in it.
She had to find him.
She had to find out why he occupied her every waking thought.
"Christ, I'd never sleep again if I had to be the one to talk to him. You've got nerves of steel." Ardelia commented, kicking off her shoes. "I'm gonna jump in the shower real quick. Do you wanna come to the movie later on too? We could grab one of the other guys to come, keep you company." The woman winked at her, and Clarice rolled her eyes with a smile.
"No thanks, I'm actually gonna go out myself; run some errands, exercise a bit."
"Oh great!" Ardelia looked relieved that her friend was actually leaving the apartment for a reason other than work. Clarice felt bad that she worried her so, but she couldn't stop what she was doing. It had become a mania. She had to catch this man.
Clarice padded into her bedroom to get dressed - she wanted to put her most comfortable workout clothes on. She didn't tell Ardelia that she was still hoping to find something to point her in the right direction. She had searched high and low, found a few things along the way but nothing very significant. She couldn't let him disappear anymore than he already had.
She stripped off her clothing - just an FBI t-shirt and a pair of matching sweatpants she used for pajamas. She was pulling a long sleeved shirt over her head when she saw it - something out of the ordinary. It lay on the top of her comforter, a folded up piece of paper. It wasn't white printer paper, but a cream colored thick paper, like something artists used. Clarice swallowed hard, moving across the carpeted floor to her bed. There is no way... Or was there? There was only one person that she knew of that would leave a note for her with that kind of paper. Artists parchment.
"You sonofabitch," she whispered, reaching out and gently grasping the paper as though she feared it would crumble between her fingers. Her hand trembled slightly as she brought it up off the comforter, but not out of fear. She would never admit the emotions that stirred within her - not in a thousand years. Not even to herself. Slowly she opened the two flaps so that the page was expanded to its fullest extent. It was only folded in half once, and when she opened it she could see why. There was a graphite drawing of a woman holding a baby lamb. The amount of shading and detail that was on the page, which wasn't bigger than 8x5 inches, was incredibly impressive. Not that she was surprised. The artist once told her that his memory had been all he had during his imprisonment. She knew he had an incredible eye for memorization and detail.
What did startle her a little was that the woman in the picture was her. The likeness couldn't have been more accurate - it was like she was looking into a mirror. It momentarily stunned her as she stared into her own eyes, her own arms cradling the tiny lamb to her chest. In the drawing she had what looked to be a cloak wrapped around both of them, leaving her shoulders bare but modestly covering every other part of her.
The second clear thought was that the person who had so carefully placed the note on her bed had to have snuck in sometime within the past two hours, because that was about how long she'd been asleep for. The person who had snuck in had to have meticulously calculated when she would be alone in the apartment - was he trying to time it so that she would be asleep? Had he thought he could catch her while she'd been awake? A million different questions ran through her mind, all at once, leaving her breathless.
The third thing she noticed, the most telling feature of all, was the short inscription on the bottom left side of the page, written in thin black ink.
"Liberty for wolves is death to the lambs."

Bahaha imagine reader in Moments watching high Benedict for the first time🤣
Moments: A High Moment
Moments Masterpost
Pairing: Benedict Bridgerton x fem!reader
Summary: Benedict says some interesting things while high.
Tumblr media
Warnings: none… just fluff
Word Count: 0.5k
Authors Note: Hi Nonny! Well after saying I wouldn’t be writing any celebration drabbles… look what you made me do!! This thought was too cute/fluffy/fun not to write down. I was planning some Moments-verse one-shots, but this wasn’t one of them haha. This outtake would be set somewhere between chapters 8 & 9 of Moments, when the Darbys are sojourning at Aubrey Hall. (ie they all know James is Benedict’s son, but it’s before reader and Benedict get together). Unbetaed. Enjoy! <3
Tumblr media
“Jamesssss, can you see? So many colours lookkkkk,” Benedict slurs with a happy grin, his eye pressed against an empty crystal glass as you all await dinner service.
James picks up his glass and smushes it against his face. “I see! I seeeee!” he enthuses.
The fact he has his little 5-year-old eye closed makes it more adorable somehow, not quite cottoning on, but loving the attention from his favourite person.
You turn pointedly to Colin. “He was fine before you went to see him; what happened?” You quiz quietly.
“This,” Colin gestures at Benedict, who is now staring at the ceiling with a frown, “is NOT my fault. I merely offered a small elixir. I did not suggest he drain my supply. If anything, I should be the indignant one, I have nothing left!” he argues. You just raise an eyebrow.
“Benedict, I can see mummy in my glass!” James exclaims, giggling, turning towards you, looking through the bottom of the glass at you. You smile indulgently at him and pull a funny face that makes him laugh more.
“Alas, James, I cannot in mine!” Benedict pouts in response, “you must have a very special glass. Can I borrow it?”
James happily stands up on his chair and passes it over.
“Oh yes!! I see her now,” Benedict says happily, fixing the glass in your direction, “she is so very pretty, isn’t she, James?”
The table goes quiet, and you blush.
“Mummy is very pretty,” James concurs, oblivious to the audience the pair now have. “She says I’m handsome too.”
“Of course you are!” Benedict cries in agreement.
“Yes, she told me my daddy was the most beautiful man she ever saw, and she couldn’t help but create me with him.” James babbles on, playing with his fork idly. You wish the floor would swallow you up as you feel everyone’s eyes on you.
“Well, I think you are the most beautiful creature ever created,” Benedict declares, dropping his fist to the table as if to emphasise his point. “So your mummy is very wise. She is wise and pretty and lovely. So very lovely.”
You stare at him as he lowers the glass from his face, lips parted, heart pounding at his words.
“She is also very naughty cos she stole my heart many years ago and never gave it back,” Benedict says in a stage whisper to James, behind his hand, “but shhhhh, that part is a secret!”
Your stomach flips and butterflies roar to life in your rib cage—something breathtaking and bittersweet all at once.
“I won’t tell her,” James whispers back loudly with a conspiratorial wink.
They both turn to you and grin innocently, humming a nonchalant tune. Everyone at the table seems to chuckle, and quiet conversation resumes, no doubt about what they just witnessed.
After a few moments of thought, you turn to Colin and say quietly. “Are you sure there is none left?”
He smiles enigmatically and asks why.
“No reason,” you say quickly, your cheeks blushing yet again.
At that point, Benedict tips off his chair, James gets the hiccups from laughing so hard, and the moment is gone.

Mitsouko (Guerlain, 1919)
Guerlain, 1919, Jacques Guerlain. Post-2014 formulation; eau de parfum concentration; 2002 decant from the Perfumed Court.
(To discuss: what it smells like, why it smells like that, and the struggle to describe this legendary heritage throwback.)
Trust me, these specifications make a difference. A year ago, I read reviews of different versions and took notes on what I wanted:
Do not get samples from 2007 - 2013, pre-2007 will have real oakmoss. Every concentration has different focus. EdP is mellower than EdT. Extrait is "truest."
You see, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) restricted oakmoss in 2001, and then more tightly in 2009, from what I can tell. Mitsouko is considered a "reference chypre," a textbook example of the genre, and chypres are, by definition, citrus (usually bergamot), labdanum, and oakmoss. (The Perfume Society adds patchouli to this trio.) Like, you gotta have those for it to be a chypre. But Mitsouko is not THE chypre:
Bois de Jasmin: Guerlain Mitsouko : Fragrance Review (New and Vintage):
Created by Jacques Guerlain in 1919, Mitsouko was a variation on the avant-garde fragrance of the period–Coty Chypre. Chypre was based on the startling contrast among the bergamot top notes, the jasmine heart and the richness of oakmoss. Though undoubtedly beautiful, Chypre was brutal in its impact. […] Mitsouko is a kiss to Coty Chypre’s slap in the face, and for this reason, its popularity endures to this day.
So when oakmoss was restricted as an allergen in the 2000s, perfumers industry-wide scrambled to come up with a facsimile; for Guerlain, with a fragrance this storied, failure was not an option. Reformulations everybody hated were, though. Edouard Fléchier took a crack at it somewhere around 2007, and in 2013, Thierry Wasser reformulated the whole thing to recapture the scent everyone remembered. People seem to have been satisfied with that version since.
So I've worn that new Mitsouko on and off, when I feel fancy, for about a year now. I put a little on a card for my sister to smell the other week, and she said, "It smells old." (She'll be the first to tell you that she’s learning what individual notes smell like.) Being crushingly literal, I don't understand what "smells old" or "smells like old ladies" means. Powdery, she said, struggling to explain. "Old." Maybe I haven't smelled enough old ladies.
Mitsouko does smell… weird, by modern standards. Generally, people either love it or hate it, and Results May Vary in a big way; it's worth getting a sample just to take it for a spin (kind of like Not A Perfume or Glossier's You, in that one regard), and to see what a piece of history smells like. Expert-of-experts Luca Turin says it's the one perfume he'd take to that proverbial desert island, but I am but a gentle woodland creature, a basic vanilla bitch; I would be more likely to take something that cost $10 instead of $145. But I still kind of love Mitsouko. Users who review it positively often speak of not liking it at first, then going back to it again and again. They also speak of a "pissy" stage in the middle that might be civet or oakmoss (or whatever represents those notes now); I know what they're talking about, but it doesn't read as anything so unpleasant to me. It's not easy to wear like the simple scents I usually go for, but the drydown is absolutely gorgeous. That's one of the things that makes Mitsouko so interesting to me: it's like two completely separate perfumes were mingled, and the first gradually recedes to let the Guerlinade take center stage.
But what’s in it? “La Guerlinade,” for starters, is a complex foundation that the historical Guerlains have—a house accord. (You could buy it unto itself for a while.) The exact formula is super secret, of course, but it's said to (possibly) include bergamot, jasmine, rose, orange blossom, orris, vetiver, tonka bean, vanilla, and lilac. The lilac—a note I didn't even know I would like—is what shows up on me with both Mitsouko and Guerlain's L'Heure Bleue (1912); it's a soft light purple note that peeks through from the very beginning, and gradually becomes the glass slipper that Cinderella leaves behind.
Over on the official Guerlain site, they tell us a bit more about the reformulation:
A masterpiece in balance and originality, Mitsouko combines a fruity peach note with jasmine and rose centifolia (May rose) flowers. Its mysterious base combines spicy notes with notes of undergrowth and vetiver.
Warm spices such as black pepper mingle with cold spices like cardamom and pink [pink pepper?] berries.
Patchouli essence features many vegetal, woody and earthy olfactory facets. Combined with rose, moss, and bergamot, patchouli forms the base of the chypre accord.
Hilariously, Guerlain also straight up tells you what Thierry Wasser actually put in New Mitsouko:
ALCOHOL
PARFUM (FRAGRANCE)
AQUA (WATER)
LIMONENE
LINALOOL
EUGENOL
HYDROXYCITRONELLAL
EVERNIA FURFURACEA (TREEMOSS) EXTRACT
CITRAL
BENZYL BENZOATE
ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE
CITRONELLOL
GERANIOL
BHT
HEXYL CINNAMAL
CINNAMYL ALCOHOL
ISOEUGENOL
BENZYL ALCOHOL
BENZYL SALICYLATE
TOCOPHEROL
CI 14700 (RED 4)
CI 19140 (YELLOW 5)
CI 60730 (EXT. VIOLET 2)
FARNESOL
Yeah. There's the famous Guerlinade… in there somewhere. They gave that secret away, hidden under a tiny link, because it means fuck-all without proportions or a way to separate it from the composition as a whole. Well played.
A Basenotes user posted a suggested Mitsouko formula that's somewhat more indicative of what those chemicals would smell like (deep breath): sweet orange, lemon, bergamot, elemi, celery seed, tarragon (a component of oakmoss reconstitution), coriander, chamomile, lavender, geranium, ylang, jasmine, clove, anise, castoreum, civet, labdanum, tonka, patchouli, cinnamon, peru balsam, benzoin, vanilla, violet, rose, costus, vetiver, musk, and the famous "aldehyde" C-14: a peach-scented lactone from 1908.
Logically, Mitsouko (1919) must not have been the first fragrance to use gamma-undecalactone, but I'm not sure any other has survived the ages like this one. Carter Burr (another top expert) writes that Jacques Guerlain most likely got it from the supplier Firmenich, via their Persicol peach base:
C-14 was a marvel, a fruity, aromatic, delicious scent that gave ripe peach skin. Guerlain plugged C-14 into the equation perfectly (the rumor is, actually, similar to Chanel 5, that he in fact accidentally overdosed the stuff; who knows), and Mitsouko became a thing of subtle opulence, strength and balance and silken twilight.
Sidebar: peach is one of my favorite fragrance notes. It's in Tamora, one of the first BPALs I ever tried twenty years ago; I don't know what the actual peach accord in that oil is, but it's still probably my favorite Black Phoenix. No matter how weird people said Mitsouko was, I was GOING to try it for that landmark peach lactone. And that's what shows up at first for me. I do get that Guerlinade lilac peeking through, but the opening as a whole is a spicy autumnal peach lying on the dead-leafed forest floor, more velvet than flesh, Octoberish and unseelie. That first sequence is intriguing, and then it warms up into that unpleasant stage; then that uneasy note fades and the Guerlinade comes fully out, a soft pale purple-blue siren song floating by on a powdery cloud. Those are the two perfumes that seem to be twined: bewitchingly different, each one blended so smoothly that I can't distinguish all the notes within them, yet not quite blended together.
And that's just my own reaction. Watching Fragrantica reviewers describe Mitsouko is a pastime unto itself. It smells like power, sex, domination, old money, "strangely nutty," depressing, elegant, fascinating, bitter, ripe, like oil paint, "an old medicine cabinet," pungent, tangy, moldy, intoxicating, alienating, feminine, masculine, unisex—to quote frugally:
User Aerides: "Mitsouko is gloomy Sundays, walks in the woods after it rains, and empty auction rooms. […] It's incense and burning candles, and waxy floor polish. It's cinnamon peach jam. It's a bouquet of lilacs on the dining room table. It lasts so long it's like a ghost in the room."
User Amararata: "There is something vampire-like about this fragrance. It's the sort of scent a woman leaves behind after she's conquered a man, or a kind of lascivious tryst in the middle of the day."
User querty988: "For some reason, those stinky little [camphor-clove] whiffs endeared it to me. It was like the baby from Eraserhead whispering in my ear, 'yes, I am the most revolting thing you've ever smelled, but I'm here with you in public today, and it's our little secret that I belong to you.'"
User KingRidesBy96: "Can't explain it. Don't want to. She's a witch, it's magic."
Mitsouko is weird as hell, and yet, thanks to the “waxy floor polish” review, and (I swear) a review someone wrote that I can't find now that mentioned linseed oil, furniture, paint, and his wife, I knew exactly what Mitsouko was going to smell like. And I was right. And I think that the mental preparation is incredibly important here. Not to be snooty about what it takes to "appreciate" a perfume like this, but to frame for you where this being of times past is, at least, coming from. Mitsouko is Aslan, present when the Deep Magic was written in 1919, whether the Deep Magic smells good on you or not.

Bois de Jasmin: What Does The Word Mitsouko Mean?
It’s the French spelling of a female Japanese character’s name (Mitsuko, “child of light,” “shining child”) from the 1909 French novel La bataille (“The Battle”); Jacques Guerlain was friends with the author, Claude Farrère, so this is thought to be the most likely namesake. Wikipedia:
The novel is set in Japan during the 1905 Russo-Japanese War, and chronicles a fictional amour fou between a British Navy Officer and one "Mitsouko", the wife of Fleet Admiral Marquis Yorisaka. Both Yorisaka and the British officer sail to war, and Mitsouko awaits with reserve to see which of the two will return alive to her.
Maybe this is reflected in the duality I’m getting from the perfume, I don’t know.
Isn’t all this very orientalist? Why, yes! Our antique faves are as problematic as ever!

Persolaise Review: Mitsouko from Guerlain (Jacques Guerlain; 1919 [and Thierry Wasser; 2013/14]):
Suffice it to say that whether it’s because [Wasser] increased the dosage of vetivert in the base, or he revitalised the citruses at the top, or, most interestingly, he created a special ‘oakmoss-like’ accord to compensate for the shortcomings of synthetic substitutes, the result is that the current Mitsouko feels like it has just emerged from the fountain of youth.

A look at the current state of the chypre: IFRA, Oakmoss, Chypres & Perfume Houses (2022)
Late breaking news: right after I fell down the stairs and injured myself rather thoroughly yesterday, my vintage pre-oakmoss-ban Mitsouko sample arrived in the mail. I’ll update once I can smell it. I also have a 2022 decant of L'Heure Bleue and, uh, about three drops of Samsara from around 1989, so stay tuned for more Guerlain at some point.

I Changed My Thesis
Originally, my history BA thesis was going to be deconstructing the Starz/Sky TV collaboration Penny Dreadful.
I changed it.
I had been forcing my way through the show to make notes for my work, but then one day I started thinking about Bill Gunn’s ‘Ganja and Hess’ way too much and it changed my whole concept.
Now, I’ll be writing my thesis on linguistic violence against women and the monstrous feminine in horror, examining terminology used against women and how those words are contextualized historically within horror as a genre.
There’s a lot of material to cover in this paper, as I already have over 50 sources, but to give an idea of what I’m looking at, the following are the movies I’ll be using for the paper:
Am I Quiet Enough For You Yet? Audition (1999) Last Night in Soho (2021)
...Will Still Become a Wolf When the Autumn Moon is Bright Ginger Snaps (2000) The Company of Wolves (1984)
I Drank All the Blood That I Could Ganja and Hess (1973) A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Holy Water Cannot Help You Now Def By Temptation (1990) Possession (1981)
They Come to Drink, They Come to Dance, to Sacrifice a Human Heart The Lure (2015) She-Creature (2001)
Burned But Not Buried This Time The Craft (1996) The VVitch (2015)
So stay tuned for ‘At Least You’ll Sanctify Me When I’m Dead: A History of Linguistic Violence Against Women and the Monstrous Feminine Within Horror’.
This is gonna be fun.
