an: couldn't help myself. I had a dream of this and needed to write it out.
--------------------------------------------------------
The concert was your first, and you wouldn’t question if it was also to be your last. You were overwhelmed to say the least. You could practically feel your skin crawl as the colored lights flashed throughout the stadium.
You had come with your best friend, wanting to see your ult group, Seventeen, while they were finally visiting a city even remotely close to you. You had both waited a long time for them to come, often writing your own prayers on social media with the hopes someone in management would see.
And now, you’re not sure how you feel.
“If you’re not feeling it, we can always leave early.” You friend yelled out to you over the music. You were in the front row of the bottom section, right behind the floor seats. You were to the side of the stage, but still had an amazing view of the boys as they performed.
You loved your friend, how understanding they were, but you just shook your head. You didn’t pay all this money for you to leave early, and because you were overstimulated. You hated feeling like a burden and you knew how much your friend was also looking forward to the concert. You both had been waiting to experience the right of passage for every carat at a concert, the ten thousand aju nices that would happen at the end.
To be fair, you might just be overstimulated by the lights surrounding the boys, particularly on your side of the stage. You couldn’t figure it out, given it was a bright golden glow and none of the colored lights going on in the stadium resembled that glow or even just the lights that lit up the stage.
You tried to make the best of your opportunity and sung along to your favorite song once it played. Shadow held a special place in your heart and you loved the timber of the groups individual voices as they sang, particularly Mingyu and Scoups as they gave their best selves to the performance.
Once the instrumental for To You began to play, Scoups tried his best to remember the choreo but he couldn’t help but to continue to move towards the left of the stage, something catching his eye as he turned to look at their fans.
He couldn’t help but to falter in his steps, thankfully no one caught his mistake as he was quick to sing his lines. The bright glow of gold held his attention, more like the woman who the glow centered around.
He could name numerous different soul bonds, from the Flower Halo to the more common Soul Mark, but never did he think he would be blessed with a Soul Glow as his bond. And never did he think he would find his soulmate during one of their concerts, where he can’t immediately move to greet his soulmate, bringing them into his embrace and holding them tight.
He had even more vigor as he continued on with the concert, knowing that his soulmate was watching him and his brothers perform. Something that everyone seemed to notice, especially his band members.
During one of the outfit changes, Joshua has come up to him and asked him if he was okay, and he couldn’t hold back.
“My soulbond activated. She’s here, Shua.” He admitted, causing Joshua’s eyes to widen in shock, and for the excited shouts of his other members who had not so subtly been eavesdropping on their elder members.
They all quickly dressed in their next set of clothes, and right before they had to go back on stage, Seungcheol has pointed you out to his fellow members and manager, who had been tasked to get a message across to his soulmate before the end of the concert, wanting to meet his soul glow.
Despite trying their best, his members kept moving to the left of the stage, trying to get a good look at who would be their new best friend by the end of the night. Yeah, they would give you and their leader your space, but they were determined to be your friends, seeing as you would be stuck with their leader forever.
This was something the crowd noticed as well, those on the floor moving to the left trying to get the boy’s attention and whatever way they could. It only happened for a couple of songs, but then the boys moved back to giving equal time to all sides of the stage.
It was weird, and something you and your friend both acknowledged.
“I wonder what happened?” You friend questioned aloud, causing you to hum your agreement.
“Maybe something caught their eye?” Was your own reply, thinking that to be the most likely answer.
Either way, the concert continued but not without difficulties. Mainly for you.
You had tried your hardest, but despite that, you couldn’t help but to feel as though you had overdone your tolerance, the biting pain of your nails digging into your palm a sad reminder.
Loud noises had always been a problem for you; the pain in your head and the itching under your skin that had your scratching marks into your arm was always a reminder. You don’t know why, but too much stimulation always caused somewhat of a shutdown for you, where you couldn’t speak and your mind didn’t seem to want to focus on anything in particular.
By the time the third Aju Nice had rolled around, you were past your limit and you friend could tell.
“Hey, you know what, it’s okay. I can see why so many people get tired after the first round. My feet are aching and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much.” Your dear friend helped you out of the aisle and towards the stairs that would lead out to the lobby of the stadium.
You tried to protest, but even those were weak as you followed behind your best friend. You were incredibly thankful for them and knew you would need to make up for leaving the concert early, even if they are adamant about leaving.
Vernon was the first to notice you leaving, following behind the woman who had been sitting to your right. He tried his best to signal to Seungcheol, but only managed to at the end of the third Aju Nice encore.
“She’s leaving, Cheol.” Vernon tried to be discrete, which thankfully he managed. His words caught the attention of the others, who had all huddled together near one corner of the stage, watching a couple of their fans in costume dance. They all watched the two women make their way to the stairs and out of the main stadium area.
Cheol panicked, sitting down at the edge of the stage and gesturing for his manager, making him aware of the dilemma. He could only watch as his manager had grabbed some of their security with him and started backstage, trying to catch up to you.
His heart was racing as he tried his best to focus and make sure the concert ended like every other one, doing his best for his fans. It was like he could feel you getting further away from him, could feel the distance festering in his soul.
As he sang the last encore, he had come up with a number of ideas, ways to track you down if you did manage to get away from him tonight.
Once the last note played and they started to leave the stage, Seungcheol walked until he was out of sight of his fans, the proceeded to run to his dressing room, where hopefully you would be waiting with his manager.
Disappointment and defeat coated his veins as he opened the door, the emptiness in his soul prominent as the room was empty from what he could only imagine would be your inevitable warmth.
“I’m sorry, Seungcheol, they were driving out of the parking lot by the time we managed to get into the lot. One of the security team did manage to get their license plate number so we have that written down.” His faithful manager spoke sincerely, not wanting to upset Seungcheol more than he probably already was.
Everyone was throwing out suggestions, some of the members even going to action as they tried to see if they could access ticket information from the stadium itself. Seungcheol remained quiet though, determination flowing through him as he followed along with Mingyu, calling their company and the stadium head to see what they could do.
One way or another, he would find his soul glow.

Jeonghan’s slender fingers run over the pages of the book in front of him as he lifts the cup to his lips. The warm vanilla latte runs down the back of his throat before he settles the cup onto the table, getting lost in his own world once again.
Two weeks and three days—that was how long Jeonghan had been in this new town. He didn’t hate it but it was different than where he had lived before. He didn’t mind being around his extended family. He was enjoying the benefits of their cafe and the quiet ambiance that came along with the little corner he had stuck himself into but there were reasons he had ended up here.
Say one thing wrong when you are what Jeonghan and his family are and know the wrong people, you might end up cursed or dead. It wasn’t entirely Jeonghan’s fault that he had the attitude or the mouth that he had. No, those were passed down to him by his parents as parting gifts.
Maybe this would be better in the long run… Jeonghan thought to himself as he traced a small doodle he had scribbled in the margins of his book a few years ago. A fresh start never hurts anyone. A little peace and quiet never hurts anyone.
“Hi Wonwoo. Can I get —”
“A chai tea latte?”
Your laugh is soft and like bells, drawing Jeonghan’s attention up towards the counter. He hadn’t paid much attention to his cousin's work or anyone else ordering but for some reason now he couldn’t look away. Jeonghan watched as you tilted your head at the tall, dark headed barista. It wasn’t like you were flirting with the man; instead, it was clear you were friends.
“Yeah, please. Am I that predictable?”
Wonwoo grins, turning from you to start making your order. His hands are precise with years of training and muscle memory. You came in almost every day and almost every day you got the same drink. So yeah, you were predictable.
“You want the truth or do you want me to just make your latte?”
Jeonghan watches, not realizing a smile had caused his lips to lift at either side. You were effortlessly beautiful. The type of beautiful that someone doesn’t even realize how beautiful they are until someone explains it to them.
“Mm, my latte. If I want the truth, I’ll visit my family.”
Sliding the exact change across the wooden counter, you smile at Wonwoo once more before turning to lean against it. The barista laughs as the sound of milk steaming causes you to feel warm from your head to your toes. You loved this cafe. Not just for the drinks but for every part of it—the employees, the other patrons, the sounds, the smells, and the familiarity.
Hearing Wonwoo’s gentle, deep sigh, you turn back towards him, taking the cup from his hands. With a soft thank you, you turn towards your usual table to find the usual familiarity of your favorite cafe is broken. A man with dark hair and eyes watches you from your usual corner, a slight smile on his lips that makes the pit of your stomach feel deeper.
The feeling is a confusing one. It wasn’t a feeling of dread. Not even a feeling of fear. Instead, this was a feeling somewhere between anxiety and desire. Smiling back at him, you quickly lower your gaze, deciding to pick a table close to where you usually sit out of the desire to be close to your favorite spot and this unfamiliar man.
When you smile at him Jeonghan feels his breath get caught in his throat. He was no stranger to women. He knew he was attractive and charming so the fact that you caused such a reaction from him with just a simple smile and your mere existence was baffling. Taking in a deep breath, Jeonghan watches you walk closer towards a table next to him to take a seat. The calming scent of your chai tea latte wafting to his nose causes him to let out a soft sigh as he lowers his eyes to his table in an attempt to not make you feel uncomfortable.
The overwhelming desire to look up at you, watch you, or perhaps speak to you was causing Jeonghan’s stomach to twist into a knot. Licking his lips, Jeonghan closed his eyes, his fingers shakily spreading across the wooden table in front of him as he tried to bite back on his whims when your voice shocked him out of his trace.
“Your latte smells delicious. I’m always so tempted to try something new, especially something vanilla, but I’m a creature of habit, I suppose.”
Smiling into an amused scoff, Jeonghan is ready to answer you before he meets your eyes but that is when any intelligent thought he once had fades into nothingness. He hadn’t noticed it before. Perhaps you were too far away? Perhaps it had been because you hadn’t spoken to him yet but a ribbon like maroon aura was spirling around your left arm and hand.
“I–what?”
Furrowing your brows, you wonder if you had read the room entirely wrong when the man speaks to you. He had seemed so confident not a moment before and now he seemed awkward and confused. Swallowing hard, your eyes downward at your own cup, you run your left index finger around the rim of the cup, not having the courage to look back over at him just yet.
“Just…was talking about your drink. Making conversation. I’m sorry if you wanted to just be alone. You were looking at me; I thought it would be okay to talk to you.”
Jeonghan shook his head at your words. He didn’t want you to be sorry. The knot in his stomach was so tight, he felt like he could fold in half if he didn’t figure this out. He had seen auras before but they were rare.
Usually, if witches or warlocks were going to do something unthinkable, they would give off an aura of danger to those who could see them. Humans could give off auras if they were considering ending their lives or if they were bringing new life into the world. Jeonghan had only seen a handful of auras in witches, warlocks, or humans in his entire life, and they had never been focused around someone’s hand like yours was.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want you to leave me alone. You just–-it’s really impossible to explain. You were talking about my drink. I get the same one every time too. I’m so used to the taste; it's familiar. What is your name?”
Smiling a bit to yourself as the man rambles, you take a sip of your drink, letting out a pleased sound to the taste before licking your lips of the sweet foam. You're startled by how handsome the man truly is when you finally lift your head to see his eyes.
“I’m–my name?” You had one—a name. At least you had one up until the moment before you looked up into the man’s eyes. Now you weren’t sure if you remembered how to breathe, much less speak or think straight.
Jeonghan smiles, feeling himself becoming more enamored with you as you look confused and as scattered as he had felt just a moment ago. Did you feel it too? The sudden, odd connection? Biting at his bottom lip, Jeonghan slides his chair closer to your table, turning it towards you as his fingers delicately trail along the handle of his cup.
Your eyes are drawn to his fingers; your pretty eyes are almost entranced by the movement as you take a steady breath, seeming to come back to reality. “Y/N. I’m Y/N.”
You hadn’t asked for his name but Jeonghan didn’t mind. You were looking at him like he was the first and last thing you wanted to see on any given day and he knew the feeling. Taking his own deep breath, Jeonghan glances back down at your fingers and the maroon ribbon of magic swirling around them.
“I’m Jeonghan. It’s nice to meet you, Y/N.”
Your name on Jeonghan’s lips was better than any music you had heard in a long time. It was reverberating in your ears, causing goosebumps to erupt along your skin. He was so handsome that you were having a hard time keeping your thoughts organized. Everything seemed jumbled, speeding towards him, and at the same time, everything was in slow motion around you.
“I–” You laugh softly, shyly looking down, before you force yourself to look back at Jeonghan once again and into his pretty dark eyes. “It’s nice to meet you too. I come here all the time, and I feel like I would have seen you here before. Are you new to town?”
Meeting your eyes, Jeonghan can’t help the way his smile exposes his enthusiasm. He wanted to play it cool and be some attractive man you had met in the coffee shop that you would pine after for weeks. Instead, he couldn’t help feeling like some schoolboy with a crush as his stomach tightened when you smiled back at him.
Leaning his arm on the table, Jeonghan bites at his bottom lip, drawing your attention towards it briefly before he laughs almost as if he’s trying to consider his next words carefully. His eyes move past you towards the counter where Wonwoo was talking to a customer before he furrows his brows and shakes his head.
“Yeah, I mean, I’ve visited before. Many times, actually. My family…extended family owns this shop. Wonwoo is my cousin; it seems like you know him pretty well. I just recently moved here, though. I’ve been spending a little more time here in the shop, at least for the past week or so.”
That made more sense to you as you nodded along, staying quiet. Your eyes move to Wonwoo, who seems to notice, giving you a friendly smile, only to glance towards Jeonghan with a curious look in his eye. There was a bit of caution laced in his gaze but he didn’t seem to linger, instead going back to his tasks.
“I see, I was out of town a couple days. I normally come in almost every day to get my drink so I probably would have seen you sooner.”
You smile again, making Jeonghan swallow hard. There was no way that if you had stepped into this cafe before today, he would have missed you. There could be 100 people surrounding him now and he would find you again.
Looking down at his own drink, Jeonghan lets out a soft, breathy laugh as you seem to study him, waiting for what he will say next with baited breath. You had never cared that much about anything anyone would say. It wasn’t like you needed a partner. It wasn’t like you came to this cafe or any cafe for that matter, looking for someone to be with. Especially not someone that you needed to speak to you so that you could breathe, but that is how it felt after just fifteen minutes of sitting at a table near Jeonghan.
“I wish you could have come in sooner...  Fuck, I can’t explain what I’m about to say. I–I swear, I’m not a creep.”
Almost afraid to meet your eyes, Jeonghan laughs, only to fall silent when you shake your head, letting out your own soft laugh.
“For some reason, and I really can’t explain why I’m even saying this but I think no matter what you are about to tell me...I think I’ll understand. I sound like a crazy person.”
Jeonghan shakes his head this time, lifting his eyes to yours to meet them with a persistent look, trying to shake away that feeling from you. You weren’t crazy. He knew crazy; he had met crazy, and that wasn’t you. Crazy couldn’t hide from him.
"No, you don’t. Not to me. I was going to say I’d like to get to know you better. Could I get your number? I’d like to take you out.”
Normally, you could hide your enthusiasm about situations. In this sort of situation, your friends would tell you to play it cool and play hard to get. Yet here you were smiling at this handsome man you had just met, like he had asked you to marry him when all he had asked for was your number and the chance to see you again.
Jeonghan watches you rub your lips together, your pretty smile only dimming slightly with effort before you nod. His eyes follow your hands, the maroon ribbon swirling like water around your fingers as you slide your phone from your purse and look at him expectantly.
“Only if I can have yours too.”
With numbers exchanged, conversation came easy until drinks were finished and your cheeks hurt from smiling. You had learned more about Jeonghan, yet you still knew nothing. He was still just as much a mystery as he had been when you spotted him at your table but the spiral of nerves and fluttering of butterflies in your stomach begged you for more.
Keeping his eyes on you as if you were vanishing into thin air, Jeonghan couldn’t help the way his brows knitted together as he watched you return your cup to the counter. His chest felt tight and heavy listening to your voice as you said your goodbyes to Wonwoo, promising to be back tomorrow. Even though Jeonghan knew he had a way to contact you and the promise of plans with you, it was hard to bear the idea of the meeting ending already.
Turning back to the tables, you stop when you find Jeonghan standing, a similar tightness in your chest, realizing what was happening. Smiling in an attempt to shake off the feeling, you sigh when he moves to meet you halfway, mimicking your sigh.
“Thank you for letting me sit in your spot, Y/N.”
Jeonghan smiles as you laugh, walking towards the door beside him. His hand reaching it first so he can push it open for you, the chilly fall air hitting both of you, causing you to shiver and wrap your sweater around yourself a bit tighter.
“Mm, you’re welcome. You can join me anytime you’d like. The company wasn’t half bad.”
Biting at your lip, you wrinkle your nose at your attempt at flirting. Your eyes fixed on the sidewalk, as neither of you can bear to make the first move to part from one another just yet. Jeonghan just laughs into a small sigh watching you, his eyes moving over your beautiful face even as you look down from him. He wanted so badly to reach out to tilt your chin up to him so you’d look at him but he finds himself tightening his fist instead to push away the instinct.
“No? I hope I can keep being “not half bad company” then. Uh, how ‘bout tomorrow? Do you have any plans? Or is that too soon?”
Finally lifting your head, you smile at Jeonghan like you had before and he feels his heart ache. If he didn’t know any better, he’d call the feeling love.
“Yeah? I mean, no. I–let me try this again. I would love to see you tomorrow. I do not have any plans, so I would love to spend time with you.”
Heat creeps along your cheeks as you stumble through your words, Jeonghan’s lips pulling up into a smirk and then a full smile. Stepping closer, he laughs and shakes his head, keeping his eyes on yours. In his mind, you were impossibly perfect. Every stumble of your words was you stumbling right into his life and he was ready to catch you.
“Then it’s a date. Do you want to meet here tomorrow afternoon? Around 4?”
Nodding, you take in a breath, finding your knees feel weak with Jeonghan so close to you, even though you are grateful he is blocking the wind. You were happy not to feel as much of the cold air on your face but the overwhelming scent of vanilla was clouding your thoughts and making your mouth water.
“Mmhm, I’ll be here. I can’t wait.”
Taking in his own deep breath, Jeonghan nods along with you, Chai invading his senses and making his head swim with desire for you. How hadn’t he noticed before that you even smelled like chai tea? It was delicious and almost overwhelming.
“I–me either. I should…get going. It’s getting cold. You are going to get too cold standing out here because of me. I’ll see you tomorrow, beautiful.”
Swallowing hard Jeonghan speaks before he thinks, his lips and brain not seemingly connected as the scent of you clouds his judgment. Taking a step back, Jeonghan takes in a breath of fresh, crisp air before smiling at you and lowering his head as you watch him bewildered as he walks away, leaving you with your thoughts and how he had called you beautiful.
Tumblr media
Out of nerves, you had gotten to the cafe early. It was even colder so despite wanting to wait for Jeonghan outside, you had to give up on that idea and wait inside, where Wonwoo had quickly put a togo cup in your hands to warm them up.
“Oh…I–thanks, Wonwoo. I didn’t even tell you I wasn’t staying today.”
Shaking his head, the barista pushed his glasses back up the bridge of his nose as he moved around the counter with a damp cloth in his hand. You smiled at him, watching him clean off a table as you listened to him talk, your eyes moving to the door every time the bell would ring.
“You are meeting my cousin. He’s pretty prompt, so you have a few minutes. Hang out and get warm before you leave again. I was kinda hoping to talk to you before you met him again.”
Your smile faded slightly with Wonwoo’s wording, causing you to clear your throat before you brought your drink to your lips and took a sip. Was this one of those be careful and don’t hurt my family kind of talks? You weren’t sure why this was making you so nervous. You liked Wonwoo and he had never made you uncomfortable before, but now you were afraid to disappoint him.
“Mm, okay? Am I in trouble?”
Wonwoo’s laugh sends a wave of relief over you but it’s brief and fleeting as he sighs, reaching up to rub the back of his neck.
“Course not. It’s nothing like that. It’s just... You’re my friend and I just wanted to... Damn, no matter how I say this, it sounds bad so I’ll just say it.” Nodding mostly to himself and gaining the courage to keep speaking, Wonwoo gestures with his cloth before continuing. “Jeonghan is a great guy. He’s my family and I love him but he’s had a rough past. He’s had a hard life at times and I just want you to remember that going into whatever this is you two are doing.”
Watching from outside through the window, Jeonghan rubs his fingers together inside the pocket of his jacket as you talk to Wonwoo. The conversation seemed casual enough but something Wonwoo said caused your brows to furrow in a way that made Jeonghan’s stomach tighten.
Wonwoo rubs his lips together, looks over your face and sees how your brows are knitting together as if you were trying to piece together a puzzle right in front of you. He wasn’t trying to scare you away from Jeonghan. He didn’t want his cousin to not find someone to be with; he just wanted you both to be careful and he could see something was moving quickly between the two of you that neither of you understood.
“I’m sorry, Y/N, if I upset you. That is not my intention. I’m not trying to tell you what to do, and I’m certainly not saying not to see Jeonghan…”
“I’d hope you wouldn’t be saying that, Wonwoo.”
Jeonghan’s voice seems to break through the tension, pulling you away from Wonwoo, who sighs at meeting his cousin’s gaze. You had almost expected him to be angry at Wonwoo but instead you find him smiling as if it were expected and part of a joke. Wonwoo shakes his head, glancing down at the table in front of him and picking up a tea cup, then turning back towards both of you.
“I’m not. I’m just talking to my friend. You want a drink to go?”
Not waiting for his answer, Wonwoo walks behind the counter, leaving you with Jeonghan, who laughs under his breath, rolling his eyes out of slight annoyance.
“Yeah, please.”
The sounds of Wonwoo working on Jeonghan’s drink become background music as you swallow hard, finally looking up at your date to find him watching you curiously. His dark eyes move over your face almost as if he were checking you for sighs of pain or injury, though there was clearly no need before he finally smiles, causing you to do the same.
“Hey, I feel like I’m late.”
Laughing, you feel warmth rush over your cheeks at Jeonghan’s words. You start to explain yourself when Wonwoo says his name and Jeonghan sighs out "just a second,” leaving you to watch him move to the counter. His hushed voice and Wonwoo’s are enough to tell you that you should mind your own business but you find yourself trying to turn your ear in to hear them better, only being able to catch a word here and there.
“Just–she’s not like you. She’s not like us. Be careful with her.”
“I’m not an idiot. Thank you for your concern.”
When Jeonghan turns back towards you, you put your drink to your lips in an attempt to look as if you hadn’t been trying to eavesdrop on his and Wonwoo’s conversation. Your eyes move from his face to Wonwoo at the counter as the barista shakes his head, muttering something to himself and Jeonghan finally makes his way to you with a long sigh.
“Ready to go? It’s pretty cold, and the wind is making it even colder. Here…”
Nodding, you start to speak when Jeonghan offers you his drink, making you tilt your head like a confused puppy. It’s only when you take it that you realize why he offered it to you to hold. His hands move to the jacket zipper, pulling it upwards before he fiddles with your scarf, making sure it is against your neck, keeping you warm and protected against the cold air.
“Oh…I–thanks.”
Jeonghan smiles at your softly spoken words, his fingers slipping over yours briefly to take his drink back. Your eyes follow him to the door, where he holds it open for you, gesturing his head towards it and taking in a deep breath of the crisp, fall air.
“No problem, can’t have my date catching a cold. Wonwoo might kill me.”
You can tell it’s a joke while also taking a stab at his conversation with Wonwoo but even as you move out onto the sidewalk with Jeonghan, you can’t help but feel bad about the conversation you had shared with his cousin. Chewing on your cheek, you walk beside him for a moment before finally letting out a breath and a whined sound as you speak.
“I’m sorry… You know if that was my fault? I don’t want you to fight with your family because of me. I know I’m friends with Wonwoo so if that’s too weird and it means you can’t see me or something, I totally get it.”
Jeonghan’s eyes widen slightly at the whine in your voice, his lips pulling up in a smile as you start to ramble out your apology as well as his “out”. Shaking his head, the man laughs, glancing over at you and lifting his brow curiously.
“If you think I’m going to let Jeon Wonwoo get in the way of something or someone I want...Y/N, you need to get to know me. Yeah, he’s family, but that’s it. I value family, sure, but blood is just blood. It doesn’t mean everything.”
You swallow the lump in your throat as Jeonghan watches you, his eyes falling to your lips before they move back to your eyes. He laughs again into another sigh as the two of you turn towards the entrance of the park. Soon, it is just the soft sounds of traffic, quiet, distant conversations, and the crunching of leaves that fill your ears as you walk.
“Was that too much? The family thing?”
Shaking your head at Jeonghan’s question, you lift your head to look at him, finding his brows softened. You hadn’t realized the two of you had been walking in silence for a few moments; you had just been lost in thought.
“No, not at all. Family is complicated. People are complicated. If we weren't, we’d be made of plastic or something.”
Jeonghan can’t help but scoff in disbelief at how easily you seem to understand him. Nodding, he furrows his brows before leaning his head back towards the sky as he walks beside you. The sky was gray, but the maple trees in the park looked like they were on fire, all red, yellow, and orange. With each new burst of cold wind, more leaves shook loose from their branches, making their way to the earth, reminding Jeonghan of how easy it was to fall.
You watched Jeonghan for a moment before looking up at the sky yourself. The trees made you smile as the leaves drifted to the ground around you and the man beside you. It was beautiful because, where he saw falling, you saw possibility.
“The leaves are so pretty, don’t you think? You know, I was told once that maple leaves are special.”
His eyes falling back to you, Jeonghan stops walking with you. He watches you standing with your eyes towards the sky, your hand out in front of you, a smile on your face as the chilly air brushes by you both.
“Yeah? Whys that?
Your smile seems to get bigger at his question and Jeonghan feels that feeling of his heart aching—that sensation of falling in love. You laugh, and your words are spoken with that same laughter, as if you are trying to believe them as much as you are trying to get him to believe them.
“I was told if you catch a falling maple leaf, you will fall in love with the person you are walking with.”
Jeonghan smiles at your words, his eyes moving to the falling maple leaves as he reaches out to catch one.
“Yeah? What if you have already fallen in love with someone and you catch a maple leaf?”
You shake your head. Another laugh is on your lips when you look at Jeonghan as he catches a maple leaf walking towards you. Falling silent, you press your lips together, feeling your cheeks heat up even as the cold air nips at them like kisses.
“Well? Do you know the answer to that one?”
Watching your lips pull up into a smile, Jeonghan offers you the maple leaf as he leans down to brush his lips against yours like a question. Even with his face so close to yours, he meets your eyes as your fingers brush against his, taking the leaf from his fingers before you answer his question by pressing your lips to his.
The kiss is warm and safe. Nothing feels rushed and yet you feel like if you don’t keep kissing him, you might cry. Jeonghan smiles against your lips when you whine softly, feeling him pull away from you. His thumb rubbing the back of your hand as he leans back to look at you and your wide eyes.
“I–don’t know the answer to your question.”
Jeonghan laughs, his hand dropping from yours to lift to your face when you notice something that startles you. Your shocked gasp as you lean back from Jeonghan causes him to look at you, concerned that he has hurt you.
“What’s on your hand?”
Shaking his head, Jeonghan looks around for other people, pleased to see the two of you alone when you take his hand and study it. He watches as you run your finger along his left hand, tracing something he couldn’t see but somehow, because of what he had seen with you and what he knew, he had an idea.
“Tell me what you see, Y/N. I don’t see anything; that doesn’t mean it’s not there. Trust me, okay?”
Your hands were shaking. Jeonghan knew then that Wonwoo was right; you weren’t like them. Not completely anyway. He had wondered if you had a little magic in you, so in a way, they were both right.
“It’s impossible. I’m going crazy. It’s like...gold ribbons? Gold ribbons around your wrist, your hand, and your ring finger? Jeonghan…I swear I don't—I'm not insane.”
Sliding his fingers through yours, Jeonghan shakes his head once more, leading you towards a nearby bench to sit down. Taking the maple leaf from you, he puts it into a small book before putting it back into his pocket and turning to take both of your hands, meeting your eyes.
“I know you aren’t crazy. I’d never call you insane. I don’t like that word. It’s used far too often for people who can do things that others can’t, for people who can see things others can’t.” Sighing into his next words, Jeonghan smiles at you. “I can explain this to you but it would take time. I would need more time than I have in this park and honestly, what you saw... I'm not even sure what it means.”
You knew logically that you should be scared of what he was saying about what you had seen, but then there was something about you that made you know there was nothing to be scared of. There was something inside of you telling you that he was telling you the truth and that you could trust him. Taking his hand back into yours, you watch the gold ribbon shimmer along his skin as Jeonghan watches the maroon ribbons on your left hand.
“I want to understand it.”
Nodding, Jeonghan reaches up with his free hand to brush his fingers over your cheek. His thumb resting on your cheekbone, the man sighs, hoping he isn’t overwhelming you, feeling like he can’t lose you just as much as he doesn’t want to lose you already.
“Then I’ll explain it to you. We have time. I’m not planning on going anywhere.”
Jeonghan’s words were comforting, just as comforting as watching the gold ribbon move around his hand. Smiling, you nod, finally looking up from his hand to meet his eyes. Out of the corner of your eye, you see more leaves fall and you can’t help but think about how they seem to fall slowly at first when they first leave the branch and then all at once the closer they get to the ground. That was how you felt about Jeonghan, even in a short amount of time.
Daylight was shorter so by the time Jeonghan walked you back to your apartment building, it was dark. Your fingers were laced with his, the taste of chai in your mouth, though you were beginning to wonder if it was still lingering from the tea you had had earlier or if it was something else Jeonghan needed to explain to you.
Jeonghan’s eyes moved over the door that seemed to want to take you from him and his fingers tightened to keep you with him for even just a moment longer. He knew it was selfish but he didn’t care anymore. He had already had so much taken from him in his life and now you had been placed in front of him like a gift. Why couldn’t he hold on a little tighter for as long as he could, even if it seemed too quick?
“I’m beginning to think we should have met at the beginning of the day.”
Your pretty laughter makes Jeonghan’s heart beat faster as you let go of his hand in place of wrapping your arms around him as if you had known him for years. Taking in a breath as he leans to rest his face against your hair, Jeonghan closes his eyes, wrapping his arms around you in return, feeling that urge to hold on tighter once again.
“Next time, we will meet at the crack of dawn. I can learn about your entire life.”
Jeonghan smiles against your hair before shaking his head. He would tell you anything, even things he didn’t want to but he wanted to know about you. He wanted to be part of your life and your family. He wanted to keep his family here but now there was you. There were those ribbons.
“Mmm, I’ll tell you whatever you wanna know, Angel.”
You smile, moving to nuzzle your nose against Jeonghan’s neck, when he calls you Angel. You hadn’t expected him to call you something like that. First, it had been beautiful and now, Angel? He really knew how to sweet talk you.
Feeling the warmth of your cheek against your skin, Jeonghan laughs, leaning back to look down at you. His fingers press into your jacket, wishing he could get closer to you, touch your skin, and be skin against your skin.
“What? You like that? Angel?”
Jeonghan watches you nod shyly, causing him to laugh. You were perfect and you were his; at least that was how he felt. At least that was what he wanted. Swallowing hard, Jeonghan couldn’t fight his urge to kiss you again. He had to do it at least once more before he left.
When Jeonghan’s lips meet yours this time, you can’t help the soft moan that slips from between yours. Between how warm the kiss felt and the gentle brush of his tongue against your upper lip, you find your knees going weak, needing his arms to keep you upright.
Furrowing his brow at your reaction, Jeonghan tightens his grip on you, deepening his kiss. He becomes braver, daring to let his tongue explore your mouth. His tongue glides along yours, causing goosebumps to erupt along his skin when the taste of vanilla spreads along his taste buds. You were unlike anyone he had ever been with in his entire life.
It is almost painful when Jeonghan forces himself to kiss you one last time, knowing he's saying goodnight. One last chaste kiss that lingers before he pulls away, watching your smile fade even slightly as he does. Jeonghan smiles still, brushing his nose against yours as you speak softly.
“Would it be weird to tell you that you taste like chai?”
Laughing Jeonghan shakes his head, leaning to rest his forehead against yours as your fingers slide into his jacket to get as close to his skin as possible through the layers of his shirts.
“No, I was going to tell you that you taste like vanilla.” Sighing, Jeonghan then lets out a groan almost in pain when he leans back to stand up straight. “I guess I should say goodnight. Your cheeks and nose are getting really cold standing out here.”
You laugh, furrowing your brows, learning that you taste like vanilla, only to frown when Jeonghan says he should say goodnight. You knew that he was right. You were cold; you were starting to shiver but you wanted to say you didn’t mind. You wanted to say, “Come upstairs?" and so you did.
Jeonghan swallows hard at your request. He knew he should be the gentleman and say no. He should politely decline and come back another day. He shouldn’t go upstairs until the two of you know each other much better than you do now but looking at you now, Jeonghan can only nod.
Two flights of stairs and a few seconds of fumbling with your keys out of nerves later, you stood in your living room with Jeonghan. Jackets and shoes discarded, you watched as he looked around at your life. A smile was on his handsome face as he moved to look at pictures of you with your friends and family. Hushed comments about how beautiful you are and how you looked like you had so much fun and were so loved.
“Yeah…I’m pretty lucky, I guess. I’ve been here my entire life so I’ve always had them. I wanna know about you, though…You said you’d tell me if I asked. You said you could explain this?”
Moving back to Jeonghan, you lift his left hand, showing it to him. Though he couldn’t see the golden ribbons, they still spiraled around his hand, just like the maroon ones moved around yours. Jeonghan’s fingers flex before he sighs, furrowing his brows, leading you towards your couch to sit down.
“Not going to run away from me or kick me out?” Laughing, he watches you shake your head no, a sweet smile on your curious face even though the nerves were eating him from the inside out.
“Uh, ok, well, here goes. I–”
Holding up his finger, Jeonghan leans from you to reach into his jacket, lying on the nearby armchair, to take out the book he had stored your leaf in. You watch as he opens it, offering you the leaf once again before placing the book on his leg.
“If my mother was still alive and she knew I was showing this to someone who wasn’t a witc–well, someone who wasn’t fully… Fuck how do I even say this?”
Turning the leaf in your fingers, you furrow your brows, hearing that Jeonghan’s mother isn’t alive, only for them to deepen when he struggles to find his words. Shaking your head, you lean to put the leaf on the table, moving to slide your legs under you so you can turn towards him, resting your hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating hard and quick in his chest.
“You do it at your pace and truthfully? I swear to you, I’m not going to run away from you or be afraid. Jeonghan, your hand is glowing gold, so if you are about to tell me magic is real, I think you are a little late. I think you are a wizard, Harry.”
Jeonghan stares at you for a moment before starting to laugh. You watch, amused but also concerned, until he finally calms down and shakes his head.
“Did–did you just quote Harry Potter to me?”
You nod, and Jeonghan scoffs lightly, leaning to kiss you softly, shaking his head as he leans back, feeling his chest lighten as his heartbeat slows and the panic subsides slightly.
“I don’t know how the fuck I got lucky enough to meet you. I certainly don’t deserve you.” You start to speak and Jeonghan shakes his head, lifting his hand to stop you. “I–please, it’s how I feel. I can explain it.”
You didn’t agree with him. There was nothing he could do or could have done to make you agree with him. Furrowing your brows, you want to comfort him but you aren’t sure how so instead, you press your fingers against his chest and just listen.
“Yeah, magic is real. It’s not what they have in Harry Potter. Most of that is bullshit. But I’m a warlock; I was born that way. Anyone with magic is born that way. I think you were born that way too.”
Leaning your head back, you scoff, causing Jeonghan to lift his left hand, letting you see the gold spirling around his hand. Your brows soften and Jeonghan knows his point was taken, allowing him to continue.
“Perhaps not to the degree of some witches but everyone has a little magic in them. All humans, just a little bit. Deja vu is magic…but you there is a little more—fuck,  maybe a lot more. We can figure that out together, okay?”
You just nod, feeling your heart quicken at the idea of having some magical potential. You had always wanted to believe in magic. That was something that any little girl or boy would want to believe in but you had never truly let go of it and now it was staring you in the face.
“This…” Jeonghan gestures to the book on his lap, “is my grimoire. I’ll let you look through it later. It’s really personal to each warlock and witch. We can start you one, if you want, once we figure out what’s going on with you.”
Jeonghan glances at you once again, watching you press your lips together. He knew it was a lot of information, even if it was just basic things. He didn’t want to overwhelm you but you had asked. Flipping a couple of pages, Jeonghan sighs and taps the page, causing you to gasp lightly as some words shimmer and then fade back to normal ink.
“Some warlocks or witches have little things about them. My mom could transfigure into her familiar form. My dad could perfect any potion that he tried on the first try. I–I can see auras.”
Glancing down at your hand, Jeonghan slides his fingers over your hand, tracing the ribbons as you watch him.
“Auras? Like, you know when someone is good or bad?”
Tilting his head back and forth, Jeonghan purses his lips, trying to think of how to describe it before he looks up at you.
“It’s more than that and it’s rare. I can’t always see them and they aren’t always that simple. I saw an aura in a warlock who visited my house when I was little. It was dark green and it scared me. I didn’t know what it meant.”
You watch as Jeonghan looks down at his grimoire, your eyes scanning over the Latin that you don’t understand as his voice shakes slightly.
“I should have asked my parents because I had to find out later that dark green auras mean not only greed but to the point of ill intent. That warlock cursed my parents and a few weeks later they were both gone.”
Feeling your heart tighten with Jeonghan’s grief, you look up at his face as a soft "oh" slips from your lips. You aren’t sure what to say and Jeonghan understands by just shaking his head and whispering that it’s okay.
“When I said that I don’t deserve you, Y/N…I mean that because there is a reason that Wonwoo was telling you to be careful around me. There is a reason I moved here. I saw my own aura.”
Sliding your hand over Jeonghan’s left, you tighten your grip on his and he feels the warmth spread through his arm, though he doesn’t have the courage to look at you, feeling like if he tells you the truth, he will lose you.
“I searched for that warlock until I found him and followed him for months last year. I had decided that I would do it indirectly. That’s worse, you know? Cursing someone else to kill someone.” Jeonghan swallows hard, nodding to his own words, feeling your eyes on him even if you don’t speak.
“My aura was black in the mirror. Pitch black, and I knew that was death and it should have scared me from doing it but I did it anyway.”
Lifting your hand from his, you turn Jeonghan’s face towards you, tears running down his cheeks. You watch him close his eyes in an attempt to hide his shame, even as you push away his tears with your thumb.
“Jeonghan…Did you come here to start over?”
Nodding, Jeonghan keeps his eyes closed, leaning into your palm. The brush of your fingers like the rungs of a ladder helped him climb out of the darkness of the hole that he had been in for far too long.
“Then start over. I don’t care about what you did. I care about your past but not that. Open your eyes and look at me.”
Slowly opening his eyes, Jeonghan meets yours, almost afraid that you will be angry with him despite your words but instead he finds you looking at him lovingly. A sigh of relief escapes between his lips and Jeonghan turns his head to press his lips to your palm, whispering, “Thank you.”
The two of you stay quiet for a moment, the story of Jeonghan’s past lingering like a breath before the weight is gone and Jeonghan can smile seeing the ribbons on your hand once again.
“You have an aura on your hand. I think that’s what you are seeing too, on mine.”
It is your turn to tilt your head as Jeonghan turns to sit towards you, offering you his hands and trying to explain the ribbons. The words on his lips seem to fall short when you gasp while watching the gold of his finger extend towards your finger and a ribbon of a different color come into view on your own hand.
“Holy shit…you can see that?”
Jeonghan watches you nod, your mouth open in awe, as his own hand spirals with gold. You watch as your hand shimmers with maroon warmth, extending up your arm and into your chest. Moving his hand from yours, Jeonghan scoffs in disbelief as the gold ribbon from his hand extends from his finger to meet the maroon trailing from yours, tethered.
“What does it mean?”
Jeonghan laughs at first, shaking his head. He wanted to be able to tell you something that sounded less like a fairytale but all he had was magic. Jeonghan recalled being young and his mother telling him about soulmates and how they were incredibly rare. How some witches and warlocks were very lucky and were tethered to another witch or warlock.
“Do you believe in soulmates?”
Furrowing your brows, you smile at Jeonghan’s words. You wanted to laugh and shake your head, tell him no, but instead you feel it in your heart that you do believe. You believe full heartedly. You hadn’t before. You hadn’t believed in anything like that or love at first sight and now here you were staring at him.
“Yeah…I do.”
That hadn’t been what Jeonghan had expected. Your words were welcomed but they had thrown him off. He hadn’t expected you to accept him as a warlock or to accept him past and now you were accepting him as your soulmate? You took his breath away.
“Yeah?”
You smile and nod as Jeonghan smiles too sliding his hand along yours, the ribbons fading into your skin. Gold and maroon meshing and becoming invisible to the naked eye. You could feel they were still there if you wanted to but right now you didn’t need to see or feel the ribbons to know Jeonghan was yours.
“Shit–I…this is not how I thought today would go.”
Jeonghan’s words are spoken on a breathy groan as you slide across his lap to sit across his leg. His hands working their way along your thighs towards your hips feeling your body against his for the first time. It was familiar in a way that shouldn’t make sense.
“I trust you. I–don’t understand any of this, not really but god that’s all I know, Jeonghan. I trust you and in my heart all I know is you’re mine.”
It was what he had known and had been afraid to let himself accept all day. You were his. He had felt bad for thinking it, feeling it but there had been a reason. You were his. You were born his.
Groaning at the feeling of your hips sliding over his, Jeonghan leans his head back, trying to keep his cool, unsure of how quickly you want this to go despite your words, “I trust you,” echoing in his mind.
“Baby…fuck. You’re mine, I know. If you don’t…I’m trying to be good. Let me kiss you.”
You wanted him to kiss you but you didn’t want Jeonghan to be good. You wanted more than that and you could feel that he didn’t want that either. You knew it was fast but that didn’t matter. Sliding your hand along Jeonghan’s arm, your nails scratching at his skin, you lean down to brush your lips over his hearing and feel his hiss into your mouth before he mutters against your lips.
“I said I’m trying to be good.”
“And I said I trust you.”
You had lit a fire in Jeonghan and now you were fanning it hotter with your kisses. He remembered how much he had wanted to touch your skin while standing outside of your apartment. How many layers of clothes had been in his way and now here you were sitting in his lap, his fingers pushing your shirt up your back so that his skin could finally brush over yours. It was like pure electricity connecting you to him.
Jeonghan smirks against your lips when you moan into his mouth. His hands pull you down by your waist over his hardening erection trapped in his jeans. Your leggings were allowing you to feel every bump and ridge of his jeans and how his cock had gotten hard for you so quickly between your legs.
“Please…please… touch me, Jeonghan.”
His brows furrowing, his lips pursing into a silent groan, Jeonghan feels his cock twitch in his jeans when you beg him to touch you. It was beautiful, and you were beautiful. He could listen to you say that all night long. He wanted to listen to you beg for him until the sun came up and maybe even longer.
“I am touching you. See, don't you feel my hands?"
You whine, squirming on Jeonghan’s lap, feeling his fingers under your shirt as he trails them along your back. It wasn’t what you wanted and you knew that he knew that. The smirk in his voice told you that. Sliding your hands along his chest, you lean back to look into Jeonghan’s eyes, your voice full of want to the point where you almost sound like you could cry.
“Touch me everywhere. Take me to bed.”
Jeonghan had half a mind to make you beg him again but your lips brushed over his and then his cheek, causing him to lose his resolve. He laughs under his breath before nodding, feeling you slip from his lap to take his hand. The warm feeling of magic, ribbons tangling and spinning around your hands and fingers, makes Jeonghan take a moment to pause before he finally does stand, letting you lead him toward your bedroom.
The scent of vanilla and chai overwhelms him for a moment as he watches you take a step away from him. Your pretty smile enraptures him as his eyes follow you backwards to your bed. Jeonghan breathes out your name, taking a step towards you before stopping to glance at your bedside table. Three candles are placed in a triangle, each a different color.
“Do you want me to light them?”
Your voice is soft and sweet, almost innocent in your question. You clearly didn’t know what they were or what you had been using them for.
“I can, Ignis.”
The Latin word is half whispered and half just a breath but each candle flutters to life with it, causing you to gasp with wonder. Jeonghan smiles at your reaction, moving closer to step between your legs, his fingers once again sliding to the end of your shirt but this time he drags it up your torso, urging you to lift your arms so he can pull it over your head as he speaks.
“Why did you pick those colors? White, red, and pink?”
Shrugging, you shake your head, biting at your bottom lip as your shirt leaves your fingertips. Jeonghan’s eyes are searching your face before he glances down at your body. His fingers glide along your shoulder as his eyes follow until he looks back into your eyes. Your back arches to the feeling of his hand running over your spine, a small laugh slipping from between your lips as his fingers make quick work of your bra clasp, causing the straps to slip from your shoulders.
“I just like the colors. They look pretty together.”
Jeonghan gives you a skeptical look. His fingers trailing back along your shoulder to guide your bra strap further down your arm as you let it fall from you completely.
“God, you are so beautiful, Angel. Lay back on the bed for me?”
You watch Jeonghan drop your bra onto the floor on top of your shirt as you scoot back onto your bed. His eyes follow you, listening to your steady breath while his hands move to his own clothes. You find yourself being jealous of his hands while also enjoying watching him undress himself. You wanted to run your hands over his skin but you also knew you’d get your chance. You knew you’d only get this chance once. Seeing him like this, undressing for you for the first time, only once.
Jeonghan runs his fingers through his hair as he drops his shirt onto the growing pile of clothes, a sigh on his lips. His eyes glance over you as you lay half naked on the bed in front of him. He wanted to get you out of your leggings and panties to be between your legs but he was going to savor this. He wanted to savor all of it, every discovery.
“I think it’s more than you liking the colors together.”
Shaking your head, you give Jeonghan a confused look. Your fingers slide along your stomach towards your breast as his slender fingers undo his belt and jeans, pushing them door. Jeonghan smirks, his dark eyes following your fingers every move as he kicks his pants from his legs and repeats the process with his boxers.
“White candles represent new beginnings. Like a blank canvas. Red, well, that’s an intense color and an intense candle choice, especially paired with white and pink.”
Sitting up, you whine softly, somewhere mixed between Jeonghan’s name and a moan as you see him fully. His body was perfectly sculpted, from his head to the toes. You feel your mouth all but water as your eyes shamelessly look over his cock, hard and leaking for you. While you were listening to him about your candles, you also wanted him in your bed. You wanted his mouth on you, his hands on your body, and him inside of you.
“I know, Angel. I’m right here. Be a good girl for me…be patient.”
Jeonghan walks beside your bed, his fingers trailing along your hand and arm as you reach out for him. A smirk on his lips as you try to hold on to him, only for him to keep just far enough away. Without asking, as if he had been in your room a hundred times, Jeonghan opens your nightstand drawer and tilts his head. You watch as he sighs softly, pushing a couple things to the side before opening a box of condoms and taking one out.
“The red candle represents fire. It means protection, strength, and courage, but also lust and power. So it’s fitting for a bedroom. I keep one in mine as well.
Your cheeks burn with embarrassment and desire at Jeonghan’s words. Your eyes are fixed on him as he lays the silver square on the nightstand before finally looking at you and resting his knee on the bed to hover over you. Jeonghan’s fingers glide over your stomach and his touch feels like the fire he had been talking about. It’s almost as hot as a candle to your skin but you arch towards it, begging for more as his fingers splay out, inching towards the top of your leggings.
“Pink is an interesting choice next to red. It’s like the flip side of the coin. It’s the candle I would choose for you. It represents tenderness, compassion, and acceptance. If you were a candle, you’d be a pink candle.”
Sucking on your lips, you let go with a small moan as Jeonghan’s fingers dip below the waistband of your leggings. He watches as you lift your hips, your head shaking slowly to his words, before you smile and push your head back into your pillows.
“So I’m a pink candle and you are red?”
Tilting his head, Jeonghan purses his lips, adjusting his fingers into the elastic of your panties as he tugs your leggings down. Jeonghan finally smirked once again, dropping the rest of your clothes off the side of the bed as he answered you.
“That’s a good way of saying it. Do you still trust me?”
Sliding his fingers along the side of your face, Jeonghan stops to rest his thumb against your cheekbone as you look up at him. He knew the answer before you even spoke, but hearing your soft "yes" made his heart beat quicker and his cock jerk against your thigh. You were so innocent and his.
“Mm, yeah? If you ever want me to stop, I want you to say so, okay? I want to try something.”
Jeonghan was moving away from you again, causing you to whine but he didn’t go far. You watch as he picks up your silk scarf from a chair near your bed. You hadn’t given much thought to the scarf in some time; the deep red accessory had been worn a handful of times before you had tossed it on the chair, out of sight and out of mind.
“Hands above your head. I promise, I’ll be gentle. I just want to see…just how much you trust me. Is that bad of me?”
He watches as you shake your head, your arms lifting so that you can cross your wrists above your head. Jeonghan’s breath hitches as your fingers wrap around the wrought iron headboard slot. The cold iron under your fingers causes your skin to erupt with goosebumps as you watch the man in front of you curiously.
“It’s not bad. I said I trusted you. I know you won’t hurt me.”
Shaking his head, Jeonghan smiles a bit at your words, moving to his knee on the mattress next to you. You were right; he’d never hurt you. Not in any way you wouldn’t enjoy it, and certainly not in a way you wouldn’t like it if he could help it.
“This is why you are the pink candle. So tender and trusting. You have your white light around you and yet... you choose a maroon scarf and your arua is the same color? What’s hiding inside of you, my angel?”
Jeonghan’s fingers glide over your skin as he loops the silk around your wrists and finally around the slot between the headboard, loosely tying you to the bed. You were a vision to behold like this, laid out bare and vulnerable for him. So perfectly innocent, yet as he met your eyes, a small smirk played at your lips.
“Oh? Is there something I am going to like when I go looking? Something you might not be able to keep hidden once I’m between your legs?”
With his hand trailing along your side, Jeonghan slowly moves backwards on the bed towards your feet but he keeps his eyes on your face. He didn’t expect an answer but he didn’t need one. The way your breath hitched when his fingers traced over your hip and grazed just shy of your pussy answered the question just as well as anything you could have said out loud.
“Spread your legs for me…”
Closing your eyes, you feel a rush of embarrassment wash over you at Jeonghan’s words. It wasn’t that you didn’t want him between your legs or that you wouldn’t do as he asked; it was that he wanted you to do it for him. He wanted to see you; all of you lay bare in front of him and you could feel how wet you were. You could feel it running between your legs and on to the comforter beneath you, almost as if someone had left a faucet dripping overnight.
“Baby…spread your legs. I won’t force them open. Not tonight, not this time.”
Jeonghan slides his hands along your shins to your knees, watching you consider his words before you let out a slow breath and let your legs fall open in front of him. His eyes drift down your body and fall to either side of him as he moves to kneel between your thighs with a groan.
The candlelight was just enough light for Jeonghan to see how wet you were and he couldn’t help himself. Leaning forward, Jeonghan mutters how beautiful you are as he brushes his fingers between your folds, pressing a kiss to your inner thigh. Using what had dripped on his fingers, Jeonghan rubbed his fingers and thumb together before pressing his thumb against your clit, his middle finger sliding back towards your already throbbing entrance.
“This okay?”
He didn’t have to ask. Once again he knew the answer from the way your body was reacting and the moan that spliled from between your pretty lips but he wanted to hear it this time. It was important. It was the first time and it was going so fast.
Pulling at the headboard, the scarf bites into your wrist gently as you feel Jeonghan’s middle finger circle your pussy when he asks for permission. Nodding you whine out yes pushing your hips towards his finger in order to get what you want. You wanted more than just his fingers. You wanted Jeonghan’s mouth, his fingers, his cock. If it were possible to have it all at the same time, maybe then you’d be satisfied.
“More…I can take more. Don’t be so gentle.”
Jeonghan smiles against your knee as he leans to rest his cheek against your leg. His finger is slowly working into you as your walls clench around his single finger. You were greedy. There was the red candle. There was how you were like him.
“You want me to leave marks on you? Remind you who was in your bed when I finally go home? Is that it, Angel?”
Working a second finger into your gummy walls, Jeonghan groans, hearing your whines as you nod and beg him for more. He had never felt like this with anyone else in bed or in a relationship. There had been others in the past. The sex had been intense but there was never this much passion or this much territorial instinct.
He wouldn’t fool himself into thinking he was the first person you had ever been with. He wouldn’t even ask you. Instead, he would fuck you so hard and good that you’d forget their names. He would erase them from your memories so that even if he did ask one day, you’d only be able to say, “I think there was someone…”
Arching your back from the bed as Jeonghan’s third finger slides into you, you cry out in pleasure. His mouth latching onto your thigh hard, somewhere between a bite and a kiss. You can feel the way your skin is going to bruise under his mouth and yet you want spots like that one to paint your entire body like a map that you can revisit in the morning.
“So–I’m so close. Don’t stop…”
Your words cause Jeonghan to smirk against your leg. His tongue runs the length between the love bite and your mound before he replaces his thumb with his tongue. Your mind was hazy with bliss. You were right on the edge when….nothing. Jeonghan kisses your folds but his fingers slide from you, leaving your thighs trembling—your first orgasm taken from you.
“No…no no no… why?”
A quiet laugh and warm breath fanning against your wet folds draw your eyes downward, though you aren’t able to lift your body enough as you strain against silk and iron. Jeonghan lifts his brow at you, his fingers lazily playing with his spit and the wetness dripping from your wanting pussy as you whine at him confused.
“You beg so beautifully. Nothing worth having was given so easily. Try again, Y/N.”
Throwing your head back against the pillow you close your eyes feeling Jeonghan’s fingers slipping back into you slowly, one by one. The pressure slowly beginning to build once again. He wanted you to beg? You could beg for something you wanted, especially when it was him. When it was this.
Jeonghan groans to the taste of you, his tongue running along your folds to his fingers before he finally wraps his lips around your clit sucking lightly. You were panting his name and begging under your breath but it wasn’t enough just yet. He could get you to do more. With a curl of his finger, brushing the spongy spot on the roof of your walls, Jeonghan smirks, his tongue resting against the throbbing bundle of nerves at his mouth as you cry out his name loudly.
“Oh fuck! Jeonghan! Please? I need it. Please? Please, can I cum? Let me cum for you. I’ve been good. I can be better. I–ah! Please!”
Your words were urgent. Tears fell over the rims of your eyes from feeling overwhelmed and the pleasure that ripped through your body as Jeonghan finally gave you what you wanted Groaning against your pussy, he buries his fingers in you deeply over and over again until finally the floodgates keeping your orgasm back break.
Jeonghan’s warm, soft, wet tongue runs to your entrance, collecting your cum on his tongue as he moans in appreciation. His hands slide under your body to pull you closer to his face as he eats you out as if you were his last meal. Alternating between his tongue and his lips, Jeonghan takes his time to clean you of every last drop of cum as your thighs tremble around his head, your muscles screaming from overstimulation by the time he is finished.
Moving between your legs, Jeonghan smiles, reaching up to wipe his hand along his mouth and chin as you look up at him with lustful eyes. There was what he had been searching for. That look in your eyes.
Reaching towards the nightstand, Jeonghan swipes the condom from it, bringing the corner of the silver square to his lips as you watch him catch your breath. Carefully, he rips the foil open as if he’s done it a hundred times, making you roll your eyes playfully. Jeonghan grins, the latex in hand, his eyes moving from yours only for a moment as he reaches between your body and his to roll the condom onto his length as he speaks into a groan.
“What? Was that too cheesy?”
“You reminded me of a college fuckboy, but I think I might love you anyway.”
Your words stop Jeonghan from moving and cause his breath to hitch in his throat. He had hinted at it earlier in the park. The leaf had fallen within his reach and you had mentioned the story about catching them and falling in love…But what if you were already in love with who you were walking with?
Lifting his eyes to meet yours, Jeonghan finds you looking away. You had clearly realized what you had said and you were trying to hide your face without the use of your hands. Your fingers were straining against the silk that kept you bound to the bed but he didn’t need you bound to the bed anymore.
Using his right hand, Jeonghan quickly unties the scarf, letting you pull your hands from the headboard but he is quick to catch them before you can cover your face. You watch as he shakes his head, lifting your left hand to his lips to press a kiss to your fingers as he does.
No, he didn’t need you bound in anyway, except to him, which you already were. The maroon ribbons of magic swirling around your fingers again caused a glow against his lips as he let them rest there but you could see how the fibers of the ribbon trailed off and down to the bed where his left hand rested next to your body.
“You think you love me?”
Swallowing hard, you feel your heart beating hard and fast in your chest. You knew that Jeonghan could feel it against his own skin as he lay on top of you. There was no point or reason for you to lie, so you nod.
“Yes.”
Jeonghan smiles, pressing another kiss to your fingers. His hand slides along your arm until he lets go of it completely, instead of trailing his hand along your leg to your knee. Pulling it up to his hip, Jeonghan groans, leaning down to brush his lips against yours as he rolls his hips towards yours. Your soft moan fans hot breath against his mouth when you feel his cock press against your folds but not quite hard enough to push into you just yet.
“I think I knew that I loved you the moment I caught that maple leaf. You were and are so beautiful. You were smiling up at the sky and the stupid trees and I was jealous of them. Then you were telling me about this fairytale..."
Whispering Jeonghan’s name, you start to tell him that you love him again but fall short when the head of his cock finally gets the perfect angle and he is able to slowly thrust into you. Jeonghan closes his eyes, his fingers digging into your skin at your hip, feeling your warm walls clenching around him with each slow inch that you take inside of you.
“Fuck…baby. You feel so good. I–god…You were telling me about falling in love and leaves and I was falling in love with you. I fell in love with you because we were born for one another. You were born to be mine. No one elses.”
And he would never let anyone else have you. Not now, not ever, Jeonghan thought to himself as he bottomed out into you for the first time. Your hand sliding along his waist to rest on his back, pulling him closer to you as you gasped out a moan, feeling full of him.
While Jeonghan’s words and the magic of it all didn’t make complete sense, what did was the feeling that he was describing. You knew it too. You knew it the moment he walked away the first time at the cafe. That man was yours. This man…is yours.
Scratching at his skin lightly, you nod and mutter his name on a moan before throwing your head back, feeling pleasure rush through you when Jeonghan starts to pick up his pace and deepen his thrusts. He was beginning to learn about you. He could feel it now, every time your pussy would tighten around his cock if he moved just the right way. So he would move that way again and then purposely make you wait before he would do it all over again, just so he could listen to you cry his name against his lips.
“Are you gonna cum for me again?”
Nodding, you wrap your hand around the back of Jeonghan’s neck, trying to keep his mouth near yours but he laughs at your instance. There was your greed that he loved so much. He wasn’t leaving you. He would kiss you every day for the rest of your shared life together but right now…he wanted to watch you fall apart on his cock for the first time.
“Angel, I love how you cry for me like this. Is it that good? You like my cock that much?”
His words were making you feel shy but still, you nodded and whined out a yes as tears ran down your cheeks. The pressure of your orgasm building in your abdomen as Jeonghan reaches between your legs to circle his thumb around your clit only causes your thighs to tremble even harder.
“Ah…Jeonghan! Please…”
The last of your words are whispered, almost tearfully between a moan and a sob, as you try to keep your orgasm at bay, though it hurts to try. Jeonghan hisses back his own groan. His climax is on the edge, barreling behind yours as he tightens his grip on your thighs, thrusting into you harder and pushing your head towards the headboard with each powerful thrust.
“Cum baby. Do it… I’m not going—fuck, I’m right behind you.”
Your hands clench on the bedding under you as you tightly close your eyes, seeing white the moment your orgasm washes over you for the second time. The intensity of pleasure is so intense for you and Jeonghan as you clench around him like a vice that any attempts he has at holding himself back are futile.
Jeonghan groans, feeling warm, thick cum spill into the condom with one final thrust before he falls over you, burying his face in the crook of your neck. You are grateful for the weight of his body as you come down from your high. Your legs slowly stop shaking as Jeonghan’s hand runs along the length of your outer thigh. His lips work soft, tender kisses along the span of your neck before he makes it to your lips, catching his breath on the way.
Smiling against your lips, Jeonghan knows he has pulled you. He knows he has to take care of the condom and that he needs to get you cleaned up but when you smile back against his lips he can’t make himself move just yet. Instead, he runs his fingers from the side of your face and neck to the back of your head, pulling you closer to his mouth. The kiss never rushed, feeling like it took your breath away while also giving you all you would ever need to survive, up until the moment Jeonghan finally pulled back to whisper against your lips.
“I love you.”
You had a feeling he would say the words. The two of you had been playing around with the words the entire time. You knew how fast it was. You knew how crazy it was but how crazy could it be when there was something bigger than both of you telling you it was meant to be?
For your entire life, there had only been a handful of people you had ever spoken those three words too and meant them completely. Now you knew that as you said them to Jeonghan, you meant them for the rest of your life.
“I love you too.”
Closing his eyes for a moment, Jeonghan takes in the feeling of hearing the words on your lips. His fingers slide along the back of your head and over your hair before he kisses you once more and pulls from you at last. You watch with fond curiosity as he takes care of himself, disposing of the condom, cleaning up the wrapper, and moving towards your bedroom door, searching for something.
“What are you looking for?”
Sighing into a yawn, Jeonghan stretches his left arm above his head to feel the muscles in his back extend, knowing all the while that your eyes were taking in every inch of his skin. He had no reason to feel shy or embarrassed after what had happened. In fact, he was loving every moment of your eyes on his bare skin; he was taking pride in your enjoyment of him.
“Your bathroom. I wanted to start a bath or shower for us. Something…”
Sliding up in the bed, you smile, pulling your legs up towards your chest as you watch Jeonghan as he finally turns back to look at you. There was still so much to learn about one another but you knew there were many hours left in the night and many years left for the rest of your life.
“Next door on the right. I’d prefer a bath.”
Nodding, Jeonghan glances towards the door you mentioned before looking back at you fondly. You were the most beautiful person he had ever seen in his entire life at that moment. The moonlight shining on you from the window, the candle light in the reflection of your eyes, and that maroon arua around your hand that signified you were his.
“Then a bath is what you get, Angel.”
You follow Jeonghan for as long as you can with your eyes until he is out of your view. Just the sounds of water filling the tub and his humming as you lean back on your bed, lifting your hand to look at the magic swirling around your hand. All that maroon and a spot of gold at the tip of your left finger to let you know he was bound to you.
“This is crazy.”
You laugh at your own hushed words, lifting your other hand to run it over your fingers. You don’t notice as Jeonghan comes back into the room, leaning against the doorframe for a moment to watch you.
“No, it’s just a little magic, baby.”

MEANT FOR EACH OTHER

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dating in a world where soulmates existed was hell. Whether you said it out loud or not, you knew the relationship you were currently in was going nowhere. As much as you wanted to love your boyfriend, you didn’t feel attached to him. The most you felt was a small sense of liking, but you would be lying if you said you loved him. And he felt the exact same way. You weren’t meant for each other and it showed in every interaction.
You were always awkward and a bit reserved around each other, always scared to initiate physical touch. It felt as if you had chosen each other as a temporary fix before meeting your actual soulmates. But, you were also too scared to break up until you found the one for you.
You knew he would find his soulmate soon. Everyone had a connection to their soulmate, whether it was matching writing on their body or being able to hear them talk. For your boyfriend, his heart would speed up when he was near them.
This is why you felt more relief than pain when your boyfriend told you that he had finally met his soulmate one day. He had been searching for months, and you had even tried to help him with his task, so you were completely happy for him. He even introduced you to his soulmate. You would miss spending time with him, to be honest. He was a sweetheart, even if he wasn’t who you were meant to be with.
Once he officially left, it really hit you. All your friends had found their soulmates, and now, even your ex had found his. Why was it taking you so long? As for the connection to your soulmate, you hadn’t noticed anything of the sort.
Your heart didn’t speed up. There was no writing on your arms. And you certainly couldn’t communicate. Your best friend assured you that it was only a matter of time. Everyone had a soulmate. There was no exception to it.
And you would wait as long as it took, but your heart still ached months after breaking up and feeling as if you were no closer.
And what’s the natural thing to do when you’re depressed? Drinking. You were always terrified to go out drinking alone, so you bought 5 bottles of soju from the store along with some ramen and other unhealthy snacks. You settled down on your couch, switched on some music and got to drinking.
You hadn’t been able to cry from your situation no matter how much you wanted to. It was strange, being in such pain but not able to express it. You felt unbearably numb. You’d give anything to just be able to feel something other than hopelessness. You gulped down more soju and the TV screen in your living room displayed a random YouTube Mix, skipping to the next cover in the queue.
You glanced over the title. Seventeen. You had heard of them before. 13 member group, insanely talented, synchronisation kings, etc. You closed your eyes, the surprisingly gorgeous cover of double take soothing you. You opened your eyes again, staring at the screen in your drunk state.
“Wait a second… 0 seconds ago?” You whispered in shock, looking at the date of the video release. Your eyes scanned over the screen once more. Joshua.
Before you knew it, tears started to break through. You weren’t sure if it was the song or if it was him. You couldn’t look at anything other than the screen, tears streaming down your cheeks as you watched him sing.
The cover video was all so simple, but it made you feel. It made you cry. Joshua was in a simple green cardigan and white shirt underneath, sitting in a producing studio. His light brown hair looked incredibly soft.
You choked up from the amount of comfort you felt at that moment. What was going on? You didn’t understand where the sudden rush of emotion came from. You hadn’t felt anything so intensely in so long.
You listened to the cover again… and then again. You were still a bit drunk when you had an inkling of a feeling and started to research. You googled the public list of all recorded soul bonds. It took a while, but eventually you found it. Iuntus Sensus.
“Iuntus Sensus or Connected Emotions: When the two souls’ emotions are connected and can be felt by the other even when they are apart. This soul bond is activated as soon as one sees their soulmate for the first time, and again each time they look at their soulmate. The bond is activated when looking at photos, watching videos, or being in person with one’s soulmate.”
You read further into it, everything matching up with what you just felt. From people feeling numb before meeting their soulmate and suddenly being able to feel again, to the intense comforting feeling that was common as the first emotion you felt.
“Could he really be my soulmate?” You wondered aloud. The description seemed to match up but was the probability of it being the case really high enough?
You kept thinking that you were nowhere near good enough to be a famous K-pop idol’s soulmate. But, then again, K-pop idols were just regular people at the end of the day. Yes, they were talented and pretty and famous, but they had soulmates too. You wondered what Joshua was like, if he really was your soulmate.
You spent the next few days watching as much content focused on Joshua as possible. Of course, you ended up becoming a massive carat in that time. It was impossible to not fall in love with the group as a whole, but you really could never take your eyes off of Joshua when he was on screen.
You quickly became an addict of his double take cover, as well as every time he infamously sang sunday morning. Those two covers became your go-to background noise when you worked from home or were relaxing.
You wanted to tell your best friend that you thought you had found your soulmate, but given that you thought he was a world famous K-pop idol and weren’t 100% sure yet, you held off. If you had told her based on the ridiculous story you had so far, there was no way she would take you seriously.
You wondered all the time if Joshua could feel your emotions because you could feel his, or if he still couldn’t because he hadn’t seen your face yet. What if he was wondering where his soulmate was just like you were a month ago?
It was that driving thought that convinced you to pay for tickets to go to one of Seventeen’s fansigns. Joshua would be there, and if he really was your soulmate, all it would take was one look at your face to know. Despite the short 1 minute of expected interaction time, you weren’t scared that it wouldn’t be enough. As long as he saw your face, that was all that was needed.
You dressed in something you felt pretty in, hoping to boost your confidence since you were starting to feel a bit nervous as the time of the fansign crept closer and closer. You stood in line, fiddling with your fingers and the album that you held in your hand as an anxious habit.
You were glad you were standing towards the back of the line since it gave you more time to prepare for meeting your potential soulmate. When you first caught a glimpse of Joshua sitting up at the tables, you felt happy. Or… you felt him feeling happy. You weren’t quite sure since the soul bond was still a bit confusing to you.
Finally, it was your turn in line. You smiled at Mingyu and gave him your album to sign, trying your best to pay attention to him instead of glancing over at Joshua who was further down in line. Talking to each member went by quickly, and soon Mingyu, Hoshi, Dino, S.Coups, Wonwoo, Jeonghan and Seungkwan had signed your album. Joshua was next.
You stepped in front of him, nerves bundling in your stomach for as long as you looked down at the floor. As soon as you looked at him and made eye contact, all the nerves went away. Joshua smiled at you, you smiled back. He took the album from your hand and asked your name.
“Y/n.” You told him, watching his eyebrows furrow and creases form on his forehead. He scribbled down a note and then looked back up to you, studying your face closely.
He tilted his head slightly, “I feel like I’ve… seen you before.”
“Really?” You asked, holding your breath. Joshua nodded, still looking a bit confused. He held up both his hands in a sort of high-five and you moved to hold them.
You both felt a shock like electricity when you touched his hand. You were startled, eyes widening as you stared back at his face. You reached out again and Joshua laced your fingers with his, the confusion slowly leaving his face. You felt a burst of happiness and Joshua smiled that gorgeous smile.
“So, it’s you.” He whispered.
“I knew it was you.” You admitted, piquing Joshua’s interest immediately. “I’ll tell you later.” You said, smiling at the thought that there would be a later. “Wouldn’t want to hold up the line…” You added, aware that you had been talking to him for a bit longer than a minute already and that he was still clutching onto your hand like you would disappear.
“Wait- Y/n, can you stay around?” He asked quickly. “I’ll tell the security to let you in later.”
“Okay.” You nodded, letting go of his hand finally. You gave him a reassuring smile once you felt the sudden surge of anxiety from him. You moved along the line before anyone noticed you lingering in front of Joshua, greeting Woozi with a small smile and giving him your album to sign.
//
You waited outside until someone let you in like Joshua had told you. You weren’t that nervous anymore, now that you knew he was your soulmate. You were mostly excited that you would be able to get to know him better. You expected a security guard to be the face you saw when the doors finally opened, but instead it was Joshua himself, rushing out of the glass doors. He looked around for 2 seconds before spotting you and grinning, not wasting any time to join you at the table you sat at.
“Hi again.” He said nervously.
“Hi.” You laughed.
“You’re a lot prettier than I expected my soulmate to be.” Joshua murmured. You could feel he was still a bit nervous, though that sentence was right on brand for him.
“I didn’t expect you to be so nervous meeting me.” You replied. You weren’t sure where you were getting all the confidence that you seemed to have. Maybe it was the overwhelming feeling of ‘he’s the one’. You finally didn’t have to be hesitant or reserved anymore, and that feeling was incredibly freeing for you.
“You said you knew it was me, early at the fansign?” Joshua prompted.
You nodded, “I’ve known it was you for a while now… otherwise I wouldn’t have come.” You paused, but Joshua seemed eager to hear the full story, so you told him. Everything from hearing his cover while drunk to watching as much content of his as possible, you didn’t let a single detail slip.
Joshua seemed entranced by you as you talked, smiling at your every word and blushing slightly whenever you complimented him. You sat there talking with him for longer than you expected, and soon lost track of the time completely. You only realised that it might have been a bit too long when the street lamps flickered on and you felt the chill from the night air.
Joshua glanced at his phone time, “Oh, it’s already after 9 pm. You should get home.”
You nodded, “It’s not far, so I’ll just walk.”
“I can’t let you walk back in the dark, even if it is close.” Joshua insisted, offering you his hand with a smile.
You took it gingerly, walking back to your old apartment hand-in-hand, taking as long as possible to prolong the time spent together. But even when purposefully walking as slow as you could, you arrived at your apartment building sooner than either of you would’ve liked.
“I feel like there’s… something missing?” You said what Joshua was also thinking.
He paused, butterflies going wild in his stomach, “May I?” He asked softly, leaning in slightly. You nodded, closing your eyes and leaning up to meet him halfway.
As soon as your lips touched it was like everything made sense. It felt so right, so perfect. He was the one meant for you. He was your soulmate.

Tumblr media
set in the Silk Touches and Mended Hearts universe
genres: soulmate au, romance, angst, journalist/photographer mingyu, pediatric nurse wonwoo pairings: reader x mingyu focus, + reader x wonwoo words: 2.0k warnings: blood & minor injury (scraped hands, elbow, and cheek)
In a world where a soulmate’s touch can heal any wound, Mingyu knows his own soulmate can only heal so much.
Tumblr media
Mingyu used to wish for little.
He had an okay apartment -- not luxurious by any means, but comfortable and in a relatively safe neighbourhood. He had a steady job -- journalism isn't exactly revered, especially in these times, but he likes what he does. He didn't mind not having met his soulmate yet -- most people never meet their soulmate, if they have one, and even then, it's not like everyone meets The One when they're teenagers like in the movies.
He felt so young, then, like he had all the time in the world before he met you.
Shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, Mingyu hovers his hand over the number pad next to the apartment building's gate. He can't just stand here for much longer when it's already dark out; he'll look like a creep. The numbers past his fingers look so intimidating, though. He remembers which ones he needs to press, (he has since the first time,) he just can't bring himself to... press them.
But he does, because he can't bring himself to not, either.
Mingyu presses his pinky knuckle into the number pad so he doesn't smear his own blood on it. Your voice comes crackly and broken through the speaker indented in the pylon next to the gate.
"Did you forget your key again?" you ask teasingly -- not for him.
Mingyu simply says, "It's me."
"Oh." Something rustles through the speaker, and your voice grows concerned. "Are you okay? Hold on, I'm buzzing you in."
The lock on the gate clicks open, and a low beep sounds when the connection up to your apartment cuts off. Mingyu sighs, uses his shoulder to push the gate open, and heads towards the staircase. Even though his sore muscles protest the extra exercise, his mind automatically chooses the stairs over the elevator. That would bring him to you faster. He doesn't want that.
Or, he doesn't want to want that.
He's tired, though, when he reaches your floor, too exhausted to remember what he wants and doesn't want when he raps his knuckles on your door. You open up immediately, a concerned frown marring your face as your eyes look Mingyu up and down.
"Cripes, Mingyu, what'd you do?"
His right cheek is all scraped up, still caked with a thin layer of blood and gravel from when he tumbled to the ground just an hour ago. His hands suffered a similar fate along with his right elbow, which he sacrificed to save his precious camera.
He shows you a weak smile. "I almost got them this time."
The tension in your shoulders deflates at his albeit misplaced nonchalance, and you roll your eyes, your signature smile returning to your lips. "Seriously? You're still trying to catch Red?"
"Not catch." Mingyu lifts his camera in one hand, snapping a candid picture of you. "Capture."
"Mingyu!" you whine, putting a hand up in front of your face much too late for it to matter. "Just get in here, you nerd." Putting your hand on his arm, you pull Mingyu into your apartment and shut the door behind him. He feels the connection wash over him immediately. It flows to his hands, then his elbow, then his cheek, an indescribable warmth that begins to make him feel dizzy. Or maybe that's just the effect you have on him. "Take a seat, take a seat. You look seriously banged up."
A groan slips out of him as he sits down on a chair you pulled out from where it was tucked under the kitchen table. "This is nothing. I'm pretty sure Red got shot tonight."
"Whoa." You sit across from him, your brows furrowing, which Mingyu doesn't pay as much attention to as the way you keep holding his hand on top of the table. You must feel the connection too, right? "You weren't all up in that action, were you?"
"Don't worry." Please keep worrying. "This all happened when I was trying to catch up to them after it all went down." Mingyu puts his camera down on the table and removes the lanyard from around his neck, gesturing at himself with his newly freed hand. "Stumbled over my own feet like usual."
You snort. "You couldn't catch up to Red even though they were shot? You never cease to amaze me, Mingyu."
"In a good way, right?"
"Believe what you want to believe," you tease, shrugging cartoonishly. The way your thumb rubs the back of Mingyu's hand has to be subconscious. He knows you would stop if you were aware. "I don't know if I've ever met someone as clumsy--"
The door to your apartment opens, and he calls your name.
"You'll never believe what Soonyoung--" Wonwoo's voice cuts off as soon as his eyes land on Mingyu, his hand still on the doorknob. He immediately takes in the sight; the dirt and dust on Mingyu's shins, the scratches all over Mingyu's face, the way his hand is held lightly in yours. He sighs. Closing the door, he slips his bag off his shoulder and toes off his shoes. He walks over to the table without a word, puts one hand lightly on your wrist and the other on Mingyu's, then pulls you two apart. Mingyu feels the loss of the soulmate connection like a splash of cold water, like all the oxygen has been sucked out of him in a millisecond, but he doesn't react -- tries not to, at least. You look up at Wonwoo, about to say something when he sighs again. "What'd we say about healing before cleaning?"
Eyes widening, you look at Mingyu's cheek, where his skin had started healing with bits of dirt and gravel still digging into the open wound. "Oh shit." You put both your hands up in the air even though you'd already stopped healing Mingyu with your touch, then turn back to Wonwoo with a sad pout. "How do I always manage to forget?"
With a little chuckle, Wonwoo smiles endearingly down at you and lightly flicks your forehead. "It's empty up here sometimes."
You scowl and shoo away his hand, pouting further at the way Wonwoo laughs louder. It's so effortless for him.
Mingyu already knew this.
Wonwoo flicks your forehead again, not nearly hard enough to warrant the way you rub where he hit and the glare you shoot into the back of his head as he turns to address Mingyu. "Let's get you cleaned up, bud," he says casually with a nod towards the kitchen sink.
Mingyu follows him without saying anything. Pulling out the well-used first aid kit from under the sink, Wonwoo goes through the motions with practised efficiency. As a pediatric nurse, and the partner to a very clumsy you, Wonwoo hasn't flinched at the sight of blood in many years. He picks out the gravel from Mingyu's cheek and hands, cleans his wounds with a damp cloth, and leaves the bandages in the kit. They aren't necessary for Mingyu with you around.
As Wonwoo starts putting everything left unused back into the kit, he smiles at Mingyu and gestures back to you at the table. Mingyu doesn't let himself resent the way he knows that smile is genuine. He returns to you at the table, sitting down in the same chair and watching you purse your lips out and pick at the skin around your fingernails.
"Sorry for being dumb..." you mutter.
"It's okay." Please reach out first. "I forgot too."
Huffing out a sigh, you meet his eyes and show off a cute, close-lipped smile. "Yeah, well... still sorry. Can I...?"
You reach both your hands across the table, palms up, and Mingyu feels the soulmate connection even before he places his hands on yours. It washes over him like ripples of flowing, sinking sand.
Mingyu lets himself get lost in the feeling only until Wonwoo returns from the kitchen counter and sits next to you, scooting his chair closer to yours and slinging an arm over your shoulders. You turn your head his way and smile, muttering quietly, "Thanks for making up for my dumbness." Just as you finish speaking, you press a small, sweet kiss against Wonwoo's lips.
Mingyu's hands stay still in yours.
Wonwoo smiles as soon as you pull away from each other, his eyes filled with something Mingyu has only ever observed. "Always," he whispers.
Mingyu swallows the feelings that threaten to rise up his throat like bile. He simply looks down at your joined hands, feeling guilty for being here during this moment between you and Wonwoo -- two people so... comfortable together. And when even just looking at your hands becomes too much, Mingyu focuses his eyes on the table between his elbows, counting the striations in the wood.
The connection works quickly on such superficial wounds.
It's a testament to the...
Mingyu shuts his eyes and opens them again.
...love shared between you and Wonwoo that even with Mingyu, your irrefutably proven soulmate, in your apartment, Wonwoo doesn't act the slightest bit jealous, the slightest bit threatened. He doesn't question you letting Mingyu in while he wasn't home; he doesn't ask why Mingyu felt the need to come to you for something as small as a few cuts and scrapes and bruises. Why he keeps coming back. He holds you close as you heal Mingyu with your touch, letting you lean your head in the crook between his shoulder and neck, and smiles over at Mingyu.
Genuinely.
"Feeling better?" he asks without a drip of malice in his voice.
Mingyu nods. Physically, it's the truth. In his heart, though, he knows he feels much, much worse than when he arrived.
You manoeuvre your hands to flip his over, a satisfied smile spreading over your lips when you see them perfectly healed, as if he never fell in the first place. "Would you look at that!" You lean forward off Wonwoo's shoulder and lift Mingyu's hands to show them off. "Looks like you're not the only doctor in this house."
Wonwoo scoffs playfully and rolls his eyes. "Yeah, if only you could heal yourself every time you get scraped up, you klutz."
Mingyu could heal you. Every time.
He says nothing.
You bump Wonwoo's shoulder with yours, laughing along with him.
Unable to bear you letting go first, Mingyu stands and slips his hands out of yours. The soulmate connection fades like the trill of a faraway train. He thanks you both with a small bow and an awkward smile, distracting his hands by hanging his camera back around his neck, then walks towards the door even though his heart screams at him to stay.
You follow him to the door like the good host you always strive to be, and as he steps out and pulls on his shoes, you stand in the open doorway, Wonwoo directly behind you with his arms wrapped around your middle and his chin propped on your shoulder. It's too cute to look at.
"Try not to get hurt out there again, Mingyu," you say with a smile. Wonwoo nods beside you. "I know you've gotta do what you gotta do to get pictures of Red, but you're no vigilante."
"I know." Mingyu puts both his hands in his pockets. They can't reach for you from in there. He turns his feet to point down the hallway to the elevator. "Goodnight." Please linger. "Wonwoo." He nods at the man clinging onto you like a koala.
"G'night, Mingyu." You stay where you are in the doorway, one hand holding Wonwoo's over your stomach, the other waving at Mingyu.
Is it better that you linger or does it only hurt him more?
He presses the 'down' button on the wall, and only seconds pass before the elevator arrives and opens. He enters, takes a breath, and turns around to face the hallway.
Before you, Mingyu didn't used to wish for much.
He had a nice place. He had a nice job. He didn't know if or when he'd ever meet his soulmate.
You linger in the doorway. In Wonwoo's arms.
You wave again as the elevator door closes.
Mingyu makes many requests of the universe now. Please keep worrying. Please reach out first. Please don't let go.
He doesn't wish he'd never met his soulmate. He can't bring himself to wish that.
But it's impossible not to wonder.
What would his life be like if he met you when you weren't already in love with someone else?

soulmate! dk
hiya. my new years resolution was “get this shit the fuck out of my drafts” so while i’m only SLIGHTLY more enthused by this fic now i was than when i wrote it, i’m publishing it. if people like it i’ll call it part of the main soulmate saga but otherwise i’m just going to call it a standalone like when i posted “see you when i fall asleep”
reader x dk ; fluff ; words : 1.4k
synopsis: you go to a concert as the emotional equivalent of a cat walking on the keyboard. this has consequences.
soulmark: the colors you see correspond to your soulmate’s emotions.
Tumblr media
Seungkwan || The8/Minghao || Hoshi/Soonyoung || Junhui || Jeonghan || Joshua || Mingyu || Vernon || S.coups/Seungcheol || Wonwoo || Woozi/Jihoon || DK/Seokmin || main masterlist
you were one of the lucky few that knew you had a soulmate before you turned that magical age of ten
usually that’s when everybody would get their soulmark but it didn’t take long for your parents to realize that your apparent colorblindness could only be explained by a soulmark
or. well. you could just be chronically colorblind and genetically see in grayscale, but that theory went out the window when you turned ten, and the Colors started appearing
seemingly at random, certain colors would be highlighted in your vision. maybe pink and yellow, maybe red and blue, maybe green and purple
you had to carry a color sheet with you for years before you could correctly name the colors you were seeing
eventually you concluded that it had to be the famed emotion color mark, which was exciting as supposedly it was fairly rare
it was also deeply upsetting because it was rare enough that nobody knew how it manifested exactly
see, apparently when you got physically closer to your soulmate, the colors would get more vibrant and your emotions would be amplified
but also, reportedly, if you got physically further from your soulmate, the colors would get more vibrant and your emotions would be amplified
FUCKING PICK ONE, HELLO??
and you weren’t sure what emotions the colors corresponded to either
some colors had common correlations (like, yellow and gold were usually happy colors, blue was sad, etc.) but it wasn’t guaranteed that those colors corresponded to those emotions for YOUR particular soulmark. it could theoretically be different
and you didn’t know your soulmate so it wasn’t like you could call them up and ask what emotion was making you see red
anyway, the lack of any real definitive knowledge of the mark meant that when you noticed the swatches on your color sheet were getting distinctly brighter, you had no idea what the hell it meant
seokmin was on tour. they were flying around the world, and they were performing everywhere and meeting carats and seeing so many beautiful things, and the colors swimming in his eyes kept getting brighter and duller with the path of their travel
he was determinedly hopeful that his soulmate would be at the height of his emotions, even though nobody could really tell him for sure (not even joshua and his soulmate, the resident soulmark experts)
but it just felt right
you had tickets to the concert, as it so happened, and you were beyond excited
like, even without the heightened emotions you would have been bouncing off the walls. as it was you’d cried for three hours after you got the tickets and you kept bursting into tears every time you saw them, it was that bad
regardless, you were really hoping you could make it through the concert without having a complete emotional breakdown
the day of the concert dawns and your vision is vibrant in yellows and golds and pinks and you can’t sit still for a second
seokmin is the most hyper and the most nervous he’s ever been. he had to look up breathing exercises just to keep himself together
with how absolutely bananas his emotions were being and how bright the colors were, he was either a couple meters from you or he was on the exact opposite side of the planet, there wouldn’t be an in between
(he was a little scared of the answer, sending a few flecks of purple across your vision, but mostly excited)
you managed to keep your energy to a level that was acceptable during the concert (it wasn’t nearly as hard as you were expecting; the energy in the crowd was high)
the members seemed as enthusiastic as ever, maybe even more so, especially seokmin
it was contagious, how brightly he was smiling, and your heart thrummed in your chest seeing it, seeing him silhouetted in the stage lights
(seokmin wondered absently why there was suddenly so much pink)
but concerts have to end, like it or not, and eventually the members waved goodbye and vanished backstage, and you, well
you were not expecting the post concert depression to hit so hard
curse your hubris
so, it was extremely embarrassing to be sitting in the lobby, hiding your face and sobbing so hard you’d started to hiccup, but you’d managed to explain to security (between each gasping breath) that it was your soulmark messing with your emotions, and they understood the risk and were willing to let you sob it out in the lobby instead of out on the streets somewhere more dangerous, which was very nice of them
unfortunately your gratitude towards the venue security was amplified by your soulmark and sent you into yet another fit of tears
seokmin wasn’t faring all that much better, although the concert crash was a physical enough thing that he wasn’t sobbing as hard as you (the choreographies really take a lot out of a guy)
that didn’t mean he wasn’t feeling the height of the mood swings, and even through the post concert crash, his determination to find the epicenter of the emotional activity just grew (aided by the soulmark, of course)
and then their manager tells them that there’s a fan in the lobby sobbing their eyes out and attributing it to a soulmark that was heightening their emotions
and for a minute seokmin can’t breathe
you thought it was weird that the guy watching over you in your crying corner asked you if it was a color emotion mark, until he said he knew somebody with that mark. then it made sense
either he was looking into it to see if they were your soulmate or he was checking to see if they would be equally as emotionally destroyed as you were at that moment
(the thought of how you must look right now was hilarious enough that you were now laughing and crying at the same time, and lord but the emotions just kept soaring HIGHER)
and then the guard suggests you go backstage, and you trail him because you can’t really argue, it’s way better than being in the lobby where people are still leaving the concert hall and probably staring at you
you’re not expecting to be lead into a room that holds, of all people, lee fucking seokmin
YOU ARE A SOBBING MESS, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MEET LEE SEOKMIN LIKE THIS OH GOD
thankfully the thought of whatever bizarre first impression you’re giving him is funny enough that it takes over and you’re finally able to stop crying, even though you’re now doubled over laughing so hard your stomach hurts and DAMN THIS SUCKS
when you finally collect yourself enough to look up you notice him bouncing on his heels, adding a good few inches to his height at the peak
“I THINK WE’RE SOULMATES!!” he yells, because he’s so excited he literally can’t contain himself
you’re not forming a lot of coherent thoughts at the moment so the words that slip out of your mouth end up being “DUDE NO FUCKIN WAY THAT’S AWESOME” and you’re only vaguely aware that the entire backstage probably heard it, with how loud you’re yelling
and he’s looking at you and abruptly you notice that his hair is pink, it’s so brightly pink and you’d never been able to see his hair color before, not like this, but before you even get a chance to remark on it in a no doubt ridiculously embarrassing way, he throws himself forward and closes the distance between you
and then his arms are around you and the colors grow so bright and your heart swells so much you think you’ll burst with the love and the joy filling your chest
and then your emotions abruptly return to normal and you’re suddenly acutely aware that you’ve spent fifteen minutes sobbing in the lobby, you yelled a swear word at lee seokmin- FUCK, YOU’RE HUGGING LEE SEOKMIN
YOU’RE SOULMATES WITH LEE SEOKMIN???
you start crying again, but at least it’s more dignified this time. and he’s crying too, so. at least you’re not alone there
he sinks into your arms and you sink into his and he can’t help but think that you fit, that your arms sit around him perfectly, that you lock together like a pair of puzzle pieces and he never wants to let go
(he does, eventually, but he keeps your hand in his)

UNIVERSE 01: friendship.
A pendant sits on the palm of her hand.
It dangles in between his fingertips; tips colored by Kool-Aid, burning red. The music is a little too loud in the cramped room, where the strands of his bleached hair merge in between the black, original ones. Wonwoo sits neatly, though his image is copied out of one of those magazines that he reads over every once in a while when at his job at the mall.
Maybe, this is where her friend met the supposed old lady that taught him the future was written in one’s palm. He’s a man of science, though he masks it as not. Books and articles highlighted on his bookshelves, casted in dust as he reaches his twenty-five years of age and he realizes that, perhaps, in the midst and wits of time he never truly reached what he wanted. No scholarship. No travelling. Nothing other than sitting at his small apartment, dangling a necklace, hoping for a sign.
“What do you want to know?” Wonwoo always speaks like he has a secret, eyes squinted, voice a rumble of depth. His vision, however, is settled on the pendant that only moves the slightest, from side to side, venturing into the unknown of what it is supposed to tell her.
Life, on the other hand, is a little bit more secure for her. She didn’t imagine her life to be big, and hence, settling seemed nice. Three years into a relationship that started out in college; a college degree that also sits on her bookshelf, waiting for it to mean something than it actually is, and work. Work has been hectic, with coffee breaks towards the coffee shop in which Wonwoo works at with a scowl to his face and a purse of his lips.
“The unknown.” She jokes, hand trembling a bit as Wonwoo rests it on his thigh.
His eyes roll, the sclerotic becoming a bit apparent, before he returns his gaze to her. For Wonwoo, the world is serious; like the heat of the Americano she has each day, and the routine of making perfect coffee. “I’m being serious.”
“So am I,” She looks back at Wonwoo. This is the man that would nod at every single one of her words when battling her fear of speaking in public back in high school. Her friend. The reason as to why she gets to speak now in her corporate job for some fashion magazine. She knows him far too well, dances with his eyes and knows how to sit him down with simple syllables. “You don’t believe in any of this.”
“I’d like to grant myself the benefit of doubting my beliefs.” He explains. The nineties are far more technological, fitted for someone like him, with up-and-coming laptops and websites. He could have been so much more, but it feels these days like he’s losing himself to a trail of nothingness. “They haven’t exactly worked to my favor the past few years, so what do I lose by giving you an answer to something? Shit, maybe, I could get an answer, too.”
She grabs his hand, pendant digging to the skin of her palm, engraving the thunder that Wonwoo had bought on a convenience store nearby. It was probably on sale, too. “You don’t need answers, Wonwoo. What’s not lost should not be hunted down.”
His eyes soften. Mirrors in shades of brown, like a lake house that she could never escape. Here, listening to Backstreet Boys, trying to hide from the reality that they are not kids anymore, is the man she trusts the most. The one person she cherishes more than life itself. For, Wonwoo was there for her to lighten up her days, even when the exposure of sunshine would hurt him, too.
“…Let me just answer one question of yours.”
“What for, though—?”
“Just to prove to myself that I’m not the only one that doesn’t have it figured out.”
She sighs, opening her palm once again and closing her eyes tightly. She imagines all that has happened throughout the years of her living on this earth. She has a job that she likes. She has gone through college safely, thankfully. She has a relationship but…these days, it feels like he doesn’t foresee a future. Nick, her boyfriend of three years, goes on and on about his plans in the future, but it never includes her. A shush coming after his words when she ever-so asks…
Would you ever want to marry me?
“The first letter of the love of my life’s name.” She spurts out, knowing that the universe will be unable to ever grant her a benefit of knowing, let alone draw it on her palm with a pendant. Wonwoo doesn’t raise his eyebrows, never judging out loud, but speaking under his breath.
“Totally not the asshole you have for a boyfriend.”
“Wonwoo, have some respect and concentrate.”
“I’m just being honest.” He shrugs, sending a tight-lipped smile her way before he’s tracing her palm with the pendant and letting it hang. The woman at his job told him that it would trace two answers; a circle was a yes, a line was a no, and what she was asking…they’d see if it could get answered.
Much to his surprise, they hold their breaths, looking at the pendant before it starts moving. Almost like magic, like the world has things that we will never understand to its full complexity, the necklace starts moving its pendant until it draws a shape. Repetitive not, perhaps a little bit two quick, but the two folds of the ‘W’ are apparent. Her eyes trail forward, widened in complexion, before laughter spurts out of her lips.
“This shit is crazy.” Wonwoo’s cheeks are tinged pink, standing up and clasping the necklace in between his digits.
“Totally. Uh, where the hell did you even learn this?”
“Remind me to never trust people from work again.” Wonwoo’s back is turned towards her, saving the necklace on the coffee table, and she thinks about it for a moment…
Wonwoo and her together…
Pfft, as if that could ever happen.
“Noted. This will never happen again—”
“Yep. Want to get some burritos?”
“Thought you’d never ask.”
The nineties had their own tagline, but ruining a friendship because of some stupid myth as the ear of technology was launching was totally not it.
###
UNIVERSE 02: opposites.
Wonwoo has always had an odd liking to coffee.
He presumptuously admits that he enjoys the taste on the roof of his mouth, and how it burns his palate and awakens him in the early mornings. Macchiato. Latte. Cold or hot. He enjoys them all. Hidden behind of strands of long hair, curled at the edges, and a pair of glasses so thick that they might as well hold all the eyes in the universe, he thinks it’s his own language. His way of speaking without actually opening his mouth. He grants happiness with a ‘good morning’ and a nod of his head, even though his coffee shop is not as big or as crowded as his family back home thinks.
A sigh leaves his lips, wiping the same spot he has worked on since the early morning. Only a client had passed by. A latte, decaffeinated, with two shots of vanilla and one of dark, moody chocolate. The busy man left without much of a glance at him, but the job was done. Hence, the day was uneventful, leaving him with pastries to sell and coffees to prepare. Aching to feel that this business is going somewhere.
He painted the walls green himself, thinking they’d match well with the plants his brother had gifted him after he moved to Jeju with his wife and worked on a gardening program over December. The tables, found in a trip to Scotland, did cost a little bit more than what he likes to admit, but it’s gloomy. Wholesome, like he wants it to be. A place that resembles the peace that comes with having a cup of coffee on a winter day.
It's summer.
Maybe, people just don’t want hot beverages.
The repetition of one of the first albums from The Beatles is cut off by the sound of a megaphone. Sharp and repetitive sentences shouted into the void of the street. People start to gather in front of his shop, but it’s not because of the coffee beans he brews every morning. There is someone else there—one of those hippies that he tries to stay away from.
Wonwoo pushes his hair away from his face, not even making the effort to clasp his beige apron off as he ventures to the entrance door and opens it with a swing. Standing on a small beer box is a woman; sporting a long floral skirt and a simple top that dangles off one shoulder. It reads ‘fuck politicians!’, loud and clear, like the sound of her voice as she asks for rights.
Rights to have some kind of reelection, for she thinks the government is corrupt.
“We are fucking marionettes to the politicians. Workers that will lose their nails clawing to get to the last bit of money they offer us. Not enough for us to eat and live freely—” She speaks into the megaphone, and he notices the soft hue of her lips and the crookedness of her hair. She’s not playing the part, but somehow, she looks quite beautiful in her messiness.
“Excuse me.” Wonwoo speaks softly, as per usual.
“Us women, we need to stay close, to protect the children of our lives. The people that need us the most. We are tired of staying silent—”
Though, she’s silencing him in the process. If this protest gets any heavier, he could even get jailed just because she wants to speak out…in front of a coffee shop. “Um, miss, excuse me, I have something to say—”
“Say it with me: ‘We shall not be silenced’!”
“Miss!” Just when she gives a moment for the crowd to speak, Wonwoo’s voice becomes loud. A shout into nothingness that brings color to his cheeks and a set of widened eyes that anyone could miss if they don’t look at him from up-close. She turns to him, still on that beer box, the wind blowing at her skirt and tracing the soft curves of her body. “This is my coffee shop…and—and I fear my clients would be scared of entering if they saw this protest in front of it. Could you please—?”
“What?” She questions, putting the megaphone down and raising her eyebrows. “This is something important.”
“Yeah! Totally. I know.” Wonwoo, though not a fan of politics, can understand that the economics are not the best these days. Hell, he fears that he will lose the business that he had worked so hard on. “How about this…I know that you planned this protest and that—”
“Just leave the fucking woman alone!” One of the protesters grits through his teeth, the others bursting in exclamations just like him.
“Yeah, fucking capitalist!”
“I could offer all of you coffee! And a place to talk. You buy me a cup, I let you have this whole…ordeal inside.” Wonwoo tries to smile, covered by the strands of his hair, but the wind whisks it away and she gets a good glimpse at him. The frown in between her eyebrows softens, mouth agape for a second before she brings the megaphone up to her lips again.
“We’re going inside! A small business needs us, everybody. We’re not getting out of this mess if we don’t make a change.”
Her hand lays on his shoulder, getting off the box and sending him a smile that blossoms one of his own on his face. It’s crazy how the world has millions of people, each more different than the last one, but there are still connections. Electricity that pulls two people together even with a mere touch, as he realizes just how gorgeous she is.
And so unlike him.
Such an impossibility.
He prepares her favorite coffee then. Sweeter than anything, with marshmallows on top, a caramel Macchiato that keeps her fed along with the guava pastry that she dared try. Speaking her mind away, he only sits and listens, knowing that this is the last time he’ll ever see her.
###
UNIVERSE 03: right person, wrong time.
He looks like the image of what his mother used to coo about every Christmas night when the eggnog got to her system.
Not a man of marriage, he used to say he was, when he was just fifteen years old and promising he could pull through with a relationship. At the time, his now bride-to-be Fae was the third wheel of the trio. The woman that would wipe her tears when everything got to be a little bit too much with him, and that would clasp Wonwoo’s hands in between her own and teach him how to be a better boyfriend. How to leave the faux interests of bad friends behind to build something beautiful.
That they built in just a few months of relationship, tainted and left as lukewarm friendship, got destroyed in just three months.
She’d dare say, however, as she lets the emerald green of her bridesmaid’s dress cascade down her back, knowing fairly well that the fabric fits her a little too snugly because she decided to bathe her stomach with alcohol just hours prior to this, that…Wonwoo was her first love. She had never loved as purely, harshly and truly. With rain falling down on them as they both cried their goodbyes, eager to make it work, but regretting forcing their friendship to be something more.
Now, he’s marrying Fae. They didn’t get together soon after they broke up. It took years, pulling away, falling apart as a trio, coming back together and Wonwoo and Fae being roommates during their senior year of law school for them to get in a relationship.
Though, the word has it that when a man is totally certain about a woman, things will fall into place quickly. He looked at Fae in the eyes quite like he does now, as she stands behind her. Fae has her soft peachy hair curled and tied at the top of her rounded face, lips opened in that heart-curling smile that shows all her teeth, imperfect and yet, so fucking gorgeous. She looks like she was taken out of a fairytale, glowing…and she should be happy with her friend.
Fuck, she is.
God, imagine how difficult it would be to explain to Heaven when she tried to knock on its doors at the end of her life that she was happy…but also a bit jealous that this wasn’t her.
Because once, when she was a teen, she thought she would be in this position. Standing in front of Wonwoo, eager to place her hands on his arms, tug him closer and press their lips together. Call it forever, because it sounds like it could be possible with him. And these are thoughts not to be having when at the altar with her two best friends, as his eyes get filled with tears when looking at Fae.
She wishes it was her.
Wonwoo does look her way at one moment, departing from his vision towards Fae and it’s almost like his shoulders fall. She knows, then, that he remembers the possibilities—what they once talked about when seated on the front-yard of his old house, through small pecks and giggles. They once said that they were ‘ride-or-die’, only to ride along the adventure that they tried.
She gives him a tight-lipped smile, raising the corners of her mouth, as if telling him that they have made it. The ‘happy-ever-after’ reached in different spectrums. Wonwoo smiles back, tracing the outline of his engagement ring, the one that will meet the new ring that will create, hopefully, a lifetime of happiness.
Not with her.
Of course, not with her.
And that doesn’t haunt her. It’s something that she wishes she could have told herself in the past, so she would have never placed herself in Wonwoo’s life that way, making his relationship with Fae easier and more factual from the beginning. However, now that she’s here, it brings nostalgia.
They were once kids, now he’s getting married.
There’s a baby waiting for him in Fae’s womb, that not many people in this church know about. If any, really.
That’s the magic of moving on, but at the same time, wondering why it wasn’t like how they wished for as kids.
She nods at him, mouthing the words: “I’m proud of you.” in hopes that he can read her lips. Wonwoo, excelling at everything he does, manages to do so, nodding back at her before returning his gaze towards his wife.
Then, comes the exchange of words. His deep vibrato promises to cherish Fae forever, and she believes him. Maybe, she doesn’t have anyone by her side, or a man that can compare to the quality of people that Wonwoo is, but the time will come. For now, she’s the tree that shadows over the couple, sheltering from the eyes of the judging as they kiss, after letting out into the world what they wish for each other. Enormous contentedness, for example.
She claps, hands coming together as if praying that they will get to live up to their words. Plenty of years that will come and would have happened to her if Wonwoo was truly her person. Or maybe, he is, because this buzzing excitement that builds like makeup within her chest, coating her heart in layers and layers to hide what truly lays underneath is…an indicative.
Wonwoo is not a person that she got rid off easily. If not, they wouldn’t be friends by now.
Cheers escape her lips, fists balled and raised high in the air for the new couple. At least, someone got to have a happy ending.
###
UNIVERSE 04: the unknown
“I wish I had your eyes.”
Wonwoo says so with simplicity, his nephew—or more like his brother’s grandson—looking up from the handwritten letter that is taking up most of his time and headspace. He takes off on the family genes, with the dark hair, stoic eyes and cat-like smile. Though, the blush is different. In his eighty-six years of living, Wonwoo can’t recall the last time he actually blushed.
He sits back on his chair, creaking from how old it is, wood carving into the spine that had once functioned as leverage for running miles in the Olympics, but now is just a tale that people rarely believe from him. With that, he gets to cross one leg over the other and smile.
Love. Oh lord, love. How beautiful it is, and so inexplicably unreachable for him.
People say that everyone has fallen in love at least once in their lives, but for Wonwoo, it never felt quite right. Women were beautiful in their own spectrum of differences; he had liked a few, if he dares say so himself, with relationships growing and then, withering to the pressure of passing a few months together. But he had never met someone that had him feeling like he could keep going. A romance that could paralyze him to the bone and make him stay.
Now he doesn’t move much, but he doesn’t have anyone that accompanies him, perhaps with a memory, as he sits on this damn uncomfortable chair at six in the morning, downs his two shots of coffee and then, proceeds to read whatever book he finds in his beloved book collection. He wonders if the problem was him; if he couldn’t just quite make his expectations lower so someone could sit by his side.
He feels like his soulmate never came his way, either.
Minho crooks one of his slim legs over his hip, turning to look at the old man. “Paps, I am quite sure you have them. My dad can’t stop going on and on about the Jeon’s and how their eyes are the reason they got ladies on the first place—”
“Not that. Your dad’s an idiot.” Wonwoo excuses, laughing from within his belly and earning a smile from Minho, who plays with the button of his pen. “I am saying that you have a look in your eyes that I wish I had. How long have you been going out with this lady?”
“Almost three months.” Minho admits, running a hand through his dense hair. “…I mean, I’ve liked her for a bit longer, but paps, this is…like…you have to know how it is. I love this woman. I can’t imagine any other girl in my life.”
He can’t say that thought has crossed his head. It’s difficult to fathom just one person being enough for the rest of his life. He was a man of education, so it wasn’t like he was lurking for hook-ups…he just liked the science of relationships more. Why hunt when it always ended in a fall-out?
And he never really cared enough to keep going, either.
“I don’t know how that is. Maybe, that’s the goddamned problem.”
“How—? What?” Minho’s incredulous voice has him standing up, forgetting his letter to his girl to frown at Wonwoo as he points at him. “You’ve never been in love?”
“Never met anybody who could truly make me feel at ease.” Wonwoo announces, clearing his throat and rubbing at the long hairs on his chin. “…Because that’s what love is to me. I didn’t want a woman that I could go crazy with in the sheets. I needed a lady that…made me feel like I could be a better man, who pressured me to be better but still, made it seem like it was nothing. Like trying for her was just enough.”
“That’s crazy…” Minho mumbles, taking a seat next to Wonwoo. It’s horrid that he has to live in the same house as his brother’s family, just because walking gets harder by the day. “Do you believe in soulmates?”
“I do.” Wonwoo contemplates, nodding along to his words before sighing. “I believe there are people in this universe that we are just meant to find. But I never looked, you know? I stayed still. Hoped the great woman would just burst through the door and be…perfect. For her to be ready for me. For us.”
“That’s not how it works.” Minho says. “Love is action. Soulmates are action, too. You can find them, but if you never truly make an effort to develop and help grow, it’s not going anywhere.” Those words ring within him, youth bursting from his vocal cords, but nonexistent in the antiqueness of his vision. “Because destiny can only do so much. People can be perfect for each other, while being imperfect in their own ways.”
His nephew, or grandnephew, stops for a moment before smiling fully, like a vein in his chest had popped and liberated him.
“If we learn to forgive, we learn to love.” He finalizes, pressing a hand to Wonwoo’s knee and patting it. Those words settle within him; regret basking upon the old man’s figure. Of having so much and yet, having lived so little. With that, the guy raises one eyebrow in questioning. “Would you like to read what I’m writing? I want to give it to her for our four-month anniversary.”
“Technically not an anniversary.” Wonwoo adds the obvious, only to have Minho laughing.
“And right and there, paps, is why you’re still single at this age and time.” He still doesn’t listen to Wonwoo’s grumpy ways, or the grumble that he lets out. Minho sits by his side, the bubblegum pink paper making Wonwoo cackle. “So, I started it off by spraying perfume on it.”
“Of course, you did.” Wonwoo rolls his eyes.
“Oh, just so the lady never forgets me.”
“…And there goes, some of your dad’s genes popping out.”
“Paps, don’t be so grumpy.
“Sorry, that’s what old single men are like.”
“Well, old man, let me show you what real love sounds like.”
###
UNIVERSE 05: we were just kids.
Bones chilled, crippling under the weight of small tremors, Wonwoo doubts this is the harshest rain the city has met. Not that he would know; he’s only been living for eight years in this wholesome world, but he knows for a fact that he could climb mountains with storms that could break the sky itself and he’d make it, just to meet his crush by the swings that near his home.
She’s his neighbor of sorts. His cousin studies with him, just one year older than him, and he ignores the kind of beauty he holds. The headbands that cling to her hair and tangle it even more. The gloss of her lips that may come from the donuts he always steals from his dad’s shelves just to give something to her. Her cheeks are rounded, like universes that he’d dare kiss if that wasn’t prohibited. Mom taught him that he shouldn’t get too close to girls, but she’s…gorgeous.
Intelligent.
She’s a storm waiting to unravel and he notices it when her hands splay under the rain, trapped underneath one of the picnic tables, waiting for the night not to eat them alive with the power of rain water. She may be made of sugar, like the sweetness of her words when she tells him that he’s the best student in his grade, that he knows things that even her, as his senior, has no idea about. That could be why she doesn’t get under the rain, afraid of it, cling to her own knees…
“Oh!” Wonwoo says his thoughts out loud. Of freaking course! Dad always lent his jacket to Mom when the weather got a bit cold. Though, he’s not a businessman. He doesn’t have a jacket around waiting to wrap around her arms. Instead, he stretches the sleeves of his yellow sweater, placing the tips on her ears and mumbling. “You must be freezing.”
“Everywhere. Not just my ears.” She points out and thank God it has gotten late—though not really, he may hear an earful from his parents when he gets back home—. Or, they could come looking for them. For, both her family and his knew about their whereabouts. “You’ll ruin your sweater.”
“You’ll get sick.” Wonwoo points out the obvious, though he can’t help but give a toothy grin that is mostly braces. “…That could give us an excuse to come over to my place. My grandma always makes the best chicken soup. Dad says it heals the heart.”
She smiles at him, crooked, closing her eyes the slightest before returning her gaze to the sky. “I’m afraid we won’t make it home tonight. I don’t want to stay out from home.”
Then, she pauses, lowering her voice.
“I’m scared.”
He hadn’t noticed that while being under the rain with her seemed like the most romantic thing to do, it was also something that she didn’t want to do. Responsible, eager to wrap herself up in her mom’s arms as she had hot chocolate to ease the ache in her joints, that’s who she was. The stars become her north, though Wonwoo notices she’s studying the houses not too far, where the lights have started to take place one by one because of people turning them on at the dusk of dawn.
That’s the cue he needs for taking off his sweater, leaving him only in a white t-shirt with a dinosaur imprinted on it. Then, he’s placing the sweater on top of their heads.
“Wonwoo!” She screeches, covering her face with her palms. “What do you think you’re doing? You’ll get sick, too!”
“I am getting you home, that’s exactly what I’m doing!” His black hair sticks to his face, turning around with his sweater getting drenched while on top of him. He’s already out of their hideaway, nodding at her. “Get here! We need to run before we get entirely wet!”
“Jesus!” She adds, walking alongside him and wrapping an arm around his waist to keep the two of them under the sweater. Wonwoo would be lying if he said he didn’t feel his heart racing within his chest. “O—Okay. I’ll have my mom make you some hot choco in return.”
“Really?”
“O—Of course.” Teeth tittering, she gives him a smile when he looks down at her for a fraction of a second, running through the streets of their neighborhood, shoes ruined because of them splashing against the water-covered concrete. The tip of her nose glistens as if she had just cried, but she looks genuinely happy. “Wonwoo, you’re…the best boy I’ve ever met.”
They are only eight years old, but those words are enough to let Wonwoo know that he wants to be just as old as his parents are and cling to her hand just because he can, and because he wants to. He guides their scavenging, blushing, trembling, mumbling and tripping over his own words, perhaps even his shoelaces, because he is so young and yet, he knows this is love.
The romance his grandma always coos about in those books she reads as her dishes are finished.
The same love that his brother got scolded about just a few days prior for drawing hearts on his notebook.
The love that adults say they can’t find because they are too blind to the obvious. Only a heart that loves purely is able to hunt for romance. For, if love is viewed by a battlefield, it will only be a matter of time before the ticking bomb explodes and their territory is turned to ashes. He may not know a lot about life, or if they’ll last forever, but in his short years of living he knows he doesn’t want her anywhere but at his side, each and every afternoon, playing in that park near their neighborhood, swings with their names written in between doodles of hearts.
###
UNIVERSE 06: i promised i’d stay.
The first night of living with somebody should feel like the initiation of a construction work that only architects could battle with. It’s a promise of sorts; the trial and error that every relationship needs to go through, and she’s so certain about Wonwoo. Everything that he has established and shown to be in the year they have been together, but at the same time, lying next to him as the lull light of his reading lamp bathes over them, his eyes half-closing as he dives into a good read, feels like she could die at any minute.
Not because of him, but she just wants everything to go well.
It’s the fear of having people a few years from now telling her that they saw it from the get-go; that they wouldn’t work out in any way. It’s the irrational thought that pops in her head and tells her that, much like blogs and memes have emphasized, people are not to be trusted, for no one loves truly in this time and age. It’s the weight on her chest that tells her that he loves her, but she could have tried to put on something sexier instead of her usual cartoon pajamas.
She tries to fall asleep to no avail. People say that relationships no longer exist; we are just going from one person to the other, searching to be found. However, the thought of not having Wonwoo by her side and failing in this terrifies her. She is supposed to be the love of his life, the woman that he sighs about every single day and the mere reason why he has a smile on his face. She doesn’t ask for perfect, for they have had their arguments with tranquil conversations aiming to be respectful between the two, but she wants it to be him.
But what if it’s not him?
What if it’s him, but she’s not his ‘it’s her’?
Another turn on the bed.
Another tug of the sheets.
Another sigh.
Wonwoo closes his book softly, eyes closing the slightest before he turns to the side. That’s when he comes face to face with her, pulling the covers slightly over his chin before he connects his gaze to hers.
“I can hear the gears turning inside your head.” He whispers, licking his bottom lip and pressing a chaste kiss to her cheek before sighing. “What’s on your mind?”
“Nothing.” She lies through her teeth, afraid of what he may think in that moment of overthinking. Though, Wonwoo doesn’t eat it up, humming at her words.
“Are you sad?”
“Not precisely.”
“Are you angry?”
“Not precisely.” She repeats.
“Is it something I did?”
“Not precisely.” She confesses, hiding her face on his chest and feeling all the weight on her shoulders come out in a sigh. “It’s the fear of what you can do. Like leaving, stop loving me, hating me after moving in with me…wanting to go somewhere else, loving someone else—”
“That’s impossible.” Wonwoo says with a scoff, placing a hand on her face and pressing kisses to her cheeks repeatedly, each softer than the last one.
“Promise me it’s impossible.”
“I can swear.” Wonwoo announces, pulling away to kiss her lips. Her heart races and calms down at his motions at the same time; the paradoxical magic that he pulls with her. “Because I choose to love you every day, even when there are millions of people out there, and circumstances that can happen between us. I choose to go to bed every night with you because I was tired of thanking God and having to think you’re far away. I won’t hate you, because I want to make it work.” He stops for a second, rubbing at a tear that had glided down her eye. “I choose you here, now, tomorrow, forever. You’re the love of my life not because the universe put you on my road, but because I choose you.”
Sometimes, we get lost on ‘the one’. The one person that was made to perfection to fit exactly what we wanted. However, we shape the person we love within our thoughts to be the one that we wanted. It’s up to us to accept someone, or feel like they are the kind of person that we want by our sides forever. She thinks this way as she cuddles closer to his chest, intertwining their legs, imagining if it will feel as safe and beautiful as it does right now when they are eighty and he keeps reading a few chapters before going to bed.
After all, doubting Wonwoo comes in spurts that disappear when she recalls that she feels like she has known him forever. Here, in this lifetime and the many ones to come.
Maybe, in another universe, they are just as in love as they are right now.

---------------------------
It had been the fourth time the boys had run through the dance, Hoshi demanding they get it perfect once before leaving for the night. This specific dance had been trouble for some of the boys, different sections needing tweaking before Hoshi would give the okay.
You were supposed to be going out to dinner with your soulmate; it was the anniversary of when you met and your soulbond kicked in. Seungcheol said he made a reservation at your favorite restaurant, and to dress nice. But when time passed, and it got closer to the time you were supposed to be ready and he still wasn’t home, you got worried.
So, you got ready and went to the company, and found your soulmate and his band still practicing.
“Oh goodness, baby! I didn’t even realize. I’m so sorry. I can’t leave until we get this dance right.” Seungcheol had run up to you, your outfit earning you a few teasing whistles from the boys and them earning a scowl from their leader.
You sighed inside, knowing how dedicated your soulmate was to his group, but you couldn’t help the neglect you had been feeling lately. Tour season was coming up, and Seungcheol was just coming off from an injury. You knew he felt compelled to do his best for his group and for carat’s but sometimes you felt like you didn’t fit into the fold.
“It’s okay, Cheol. I’ll wait.” And you did, you sat in one of the chairs off to the side and watched as they practiced the choreography again and again.
Time passed and you missed your reservation, you realized as you looked at your phone, checking the time. Your home screen a picture of you and Cheol, a big smile on your face as he pressed a messy kiss to your cheek. It was from your first date, a couple months after you found each other and his name appeared on your forearm in gold.
You knew that Seungcheol was an idol, but you still couldn’t help but to feel selfish for wanting to be a part of his life; wanting him to spend time with you instead of staying up, for him to come home and instead falling asleep after midnight. You wanted him to make an effort to spend time with you instead of you staying around and waiting for him.
You were soulmates but you felt more like a roommate.
“Hey Cheolie, I think I’m gonna head back home.” You finally gave up; it was a little after ten pm and your reservation was scheduled for six pm. You had been here for hours and he hadn’t even glanced your way.
“I’m so sorry, baby. I—I’ll make it up to you, I promise!” Seungcheol said the words he said every time, and you wanted to nod along to his words like every time, smiling softly at his empty promises, but you didn’t have the energy to this time.
“I uhm, think I might go spend the weekend at my friend’s. She’s been wanting to uhm catch up. Don’t wait up.” You couldn’t help but sound defeated, not even giving your soulmate a smile as you spoke. You were tired.
“Goodbye boys!” You yelled out looking past Seungcheol and waved goodbye to the boys before leaving, not acknowledging him.
You couldn’t hide the tears you felt falling as you wondered if soulmates always ended up together.
-*-*-
Seungcheol felt stunned, your actions and expressions making him wonder what happened. He noticed the tired expression on your face and how defeated you sounded and it had him wondering what he did.
“Hey, is Y/n okay?” Joshua walked up to him as Hoshi called a break, obviously knowing something was going on.
“I—I don’t know?” Seungcheol was confused, his eyes still watching the door you just walked out of.
“Well, when was the last time you two talked?” Seungcheol’s mind tried coming up with any recent moment of just the two of you, but he couldn’t and Joshua could tell.
“Cheol, do you remember what you planned tonight?” He asked again and grew a little annoyed at how clueless his leader was when he didn’t answer.
“Look, I understand that you want to jump right back into everything, but that doesn’t mean you neglect your soulmate. Tonight was your soul anniversary and instead of spending it with your soulmate, who was dressed so nice and pretty for you, she had to sit and watch us practice for five hours.” Joshua laid it down for him.
Seungcheol couldn’t believe how bad he let things get. You had been through a lot this year, you both have. You lost your mom only a couple months back, right before his ACL tear, and you took care of him through the surgery and recovery. You had to travel home alone for the funeral because he was advised not to fly. You had done so much for him and he couldn’t even give you the time of day recently?
What kind of soulmate was he?
He knew he needed to make it up to you, and change. He needed to show you how much he loved and appreciated you. He needed to show you why you were meant to be together. He needed to be treating you like a goddess that needed worshipping.
He looked down at his watch and back up to Joshua before running out of the room, hoping to catch you at the apartment before you left.
And he had just barely made it, opening the door to see you picking up your dufflebag.
“Baby! Please wait.” He shut the door behind him, locking it for good measure.
You couldn’t look him in the eye, not wanting to in case you accepted his blank words again. You couldn’t keep doing that to yourself.
“Y/n, please. I know I have been an ass lately. I’ve been such a bad soulmate to you.” You weren’t expecting his words and looked up at him, shocked.
“I’ve been neglecting the most important person in the world to me, and it stops now. I didn’t realize what I was doing, I just… I just grew too complacent knowing you would always be there. I pushed myself wanting to be better for carats and I ignored who I should really be pushing myself to be better for.”
You both had tears in your eyes now. Seungcheol kept stepping forward until he was right in front of you, your bag now on the floor as he held your hands in his, holding them to his chest.
“I love you so much and sometimes I don’t know how to show it.” You opened your mouth to speak but he shook his head.
“No, please, I—I will do better, I will treat you like the princess you are. I can’t lose you.” You could see something changed in the way he looks at you. How he holds you. He hasn’t held you like this in a while.
“I—one last chance, Cheol. I—I can’t keep going and just hope you look at me once when you get home. I need you to make me a priority too, Cheol. I can’t keep wondering if you truly want me or not.” You finally tell him how you feel, trying not to hold back once you see the tears start falling down his cheeks.
“You thought I didn’t want you?” He was heartbroken. He didn’t realize he had let things get this bad. His own soulmate thought he didn’t want her.
His hands moved up to hold and caress your cheeks, taking a couple of seconds before he surged forward, capturing your lips in his. The taste of your salty tears on his tongue as he pulled back.
“Of course I want you. I will always want you.” He pulled you into his arms, unable to hold back now.
“I’m never going to let you go. You’re stuck with me forever and I will spend that forever worshipping you and never letting you go without knowing I want you and love you.” You let out a sob at his words, not knowing how much you needed this moment, his touch and reassurance.
“Now, you sit down and keep looking like your beautiful self, and I’m going to make us an amazing dinner, with candles and rose petals and everything.” Seungcheol made himself busy, knowing how much you believe that actions speak louder than words.
You had gone through a flurry of emotions tonight but couldn’t help but to still love the sight of you goofy and sometimes slow, soulmate as he begins to season the steak you had in the fridge, your favorite vegetable to the side as moves around the kitchen.
Relationships were always about communication, but sometimes actions truly did speak louder than words.

The phrase “I love you” wasn’t supposed to be taken very lightly. If you said it too much, its ability would wear out. And everyone knew that the only way to find your soulmate was to confess those 3 words to them. Only then would you know for sure whether you had found your other half or not.
You were a bit overly cautious to not say it. You got anxious when other people said it, even if they were soulmates. One of your worst nightmares was confessing to someone you really really loved, just to find out they weren’t the one, or worse, find out that the confession didn’t work because you had said it too much.
You had said it only two times in your life. Once when you were 6 and had heard it around before knowing how important the phrase was. Your mother had quickly explained it to you before you went around saying it to everyone. The other time was when you were a teenager. You wanted to rebel against your parents since they didn’t approve of your boyfriend at the time. So, you said I love you to him. Not only did he freak out and dump you after that, but another confession was wasted. The truth was, your parents had been right about not liking him. He turned out to be a pretty trashy person.
You had gone crying to your best friend, Mingyu, after the whole experience. He had laughed at you and comforted you and told you that only having said it twice wasn’t going to hurt you too much and that he had said it more than five times, but he still thought it worked.
Now that you were an adult, you felt the need to find your soulmate more than ever before. Your fear of saying I love you was still very prevalent, though, and the two did not complement each other at all.
You decided to wait until your soulmate came and found you instead of actively hunting for him. That way, you wouldn’t have to be the one to say the words, and you would (hopefully) still find your soulmate. You tried to boost your chances by talking to people more than you normally would and going out several times a week.
The change in lifestyle was exhausting to you, but you thought it would be worth it once you finally found your soulmate. It would be like a dream when that happened, right?
“You were out looking for your soulmate again, weren’t you?” Mingyu asked with a laugh. He had opened the door to find that you had walked into his apartment exhausted after attending a party, sacrificing your social battery for a chance at finding your partner. It didn’t work.
It stung a bit to see you searching so hard only to fail every time. Mingyu had accepted that he was in love with you a long time ago, but he couldn’t bear to say it to you. He was almost 100% sure it would ruin your friendship if you weren’t soulmates. The risk was too high. Even though it was slowly killing Mingyu to keep it all bottled up inside, he wasn’t willing to risk what he already had with you.
You nodded weakly in response, disappointed that your plan hadn’t worked at all. Were you doing something wrong? Were you supposed to act like you didn’t want to find your soulmate in order for the universe to show him to you? You didn’t know.
“Why isn’t it working? It should’ve worked by now.” You said frustratedly, speech a bit slurred from your drunk state. You stumbled a bit, almost falling over before Mingyu caught you swiftly in his arms.
“Careful, Y/n. You’re still drunk.” He scolded lightly, only out of concern for you, “How many shots did you take? You’re completely wasted.” He added, looking at your flushed cheeks and distracted eyes with worry and affection. You were cute when you were drunk. Mingyu seemed to find some charm in every state of your being. Hyper, tired, bored, chatty, sleepy, drunk… it didn’t matter because it was you.
“Only…” You furrowed your brows, counting on your fingers how many shots you took. Mingyu’s eyes widened as the number kept going up and up. He carefully led you to the couch to sit down for fear you would fall again. “A few?” You said at last, losing track of your count after 12 or so.
Mingyu giggled, “You can barely last after 3 shots…” You yawned, eyelids drooping a bit as your body begged for sleep.
“He didn’t show up to the party,” You whined, head falling a bit. Mingyu shifted it so that it was resting on his shoulder. You were clumsier when drunk as well. “I thought he would be there!” You sounded so frustrated, and a part of Mingyu itched to confess right then and there. You so desperately wanted to find your soulmate, and what if he was that person?
“I’m sorry, Y/n. I’m sure you’ll find him eventually…” He said instead, smiling a bit as you snuggled closer into his shoulder. Was it normal for friends to snuggle like this on the couch? Not exactly, but Mingyu was sure you didn’t mind.
It was strangely comforting to have you this close, like it was a taste of what Mingyu longed for. You were warm and so cute when you were tired that Mingyu just wanted to wrap his arms around you and hug you tightly, never letting you go.
You fell asleep quickly, breath deepening slightly. Mingyu grabbed the blanket that was draped on the couch and wrapped it over you as best he could without disturbing you. His body was pretty warm, but he wasn’t sure if he was enough to completely shield you from the cold. He scrolled through his phone for a while, smiling whenever he looked over to see you still peacefully snoozing.
Mingyu’s life had been so hectic recently with his work being understaffed and him picking up extra shifts to compensate. He hadn’t had a proper rest in a while, and having you curled up next to him reset him a bit. He wondered at how your presence alone managed to calm him down and ease his stress. It was like you had some secret superpower.
When he got drowsy enough that he decided to give into his own want for sleep, he rested his head gently on top of yours and was swept up into dreamland, where he, strangely, dreamed of you.
“I love you.” Mingyu spoke softly, standing in his living room, the fire lit in the fireplace flickered lightly, providing both light and warmth to the room. He held both your hands in his and gave them a gentle squeeze as he said those words.
You looked at him with shock and fear— how could he say those words so easily? But your heart tugged when you heard them, and without you even thinking further, you found yourself saying them back to him.
“I love you too.” And you both knew it. You were soulmates.
You woke up with a start, head jumping up from Mingyu’s shoulder. Well, you tried to do that, but ended up bumping Mingyu’s head on your way up, waking him up from the harsh crash of skulls. You both groaned in pain, clutching your heads as you muttered a small apology.
You were startled by the dream you had. Mingyu being your soulmate? The thought made you laugh. Your best friend was goofy and warm and always there for you, but you had never seen him in a romantic light before. He was far from what you believed your type romantically was. There was no way he could be the one. Your brain had a weird way of piecing together dreams.
“I dreamt of you.” Mingyu said suddenly, making you turn to him. He looked nervous admitting it, like he was scared of saying something he shouldn’t.
“I dreamt of you, too. Strange, huh?” You laughed, hoping to clear the awkward vibe that was in the air. You were usually so relaxed with Mingyu, so why did he seem on guard?
“Y/n, I need to say something.” Mingyu said, tone more serious than you had ever heard before. You watched with wide eyes as he gulped and then grabbed your hands. You let him hold them, even though it was a bit strange coming from Mingyu.
“What is it?”
“I…” He sighed and then made eye contact. His eyes showed how vulnerable he felt, and scared too. “I love you.” He admitted, bracing himself for the worst.
You gasped, heart caught in your throat. Did he really just say that? Did he mean it? You had never thought about how you would feel in a moment like this since you had never considered those words to come out of Mingyu’s mouth. What a strange position you were in.
You expected to feel scared or mad or uncomfortable, but you didn’t. Those were the last emotions you felt. You were bubbling with comfort and relief and love. You realised quickly that your dream was repeating itself. Had it been some sort of premonition?
You stopped yourself from overthinking too much as you were brought back to reality seeing Mingyu’s gaze fall, his eyes no longer being able to meet yours. He let go of your hands quickly, face scrunching up with guilt. Your face fell at the sight. You hated that look on his face. You hated when he looked helpless.
“I love you too.” You said quickly. And you meant it. There wasn’t a person in the world that you cared for more than Mingyu. If he was your soulmate then you would be kicking yourself for not realising it years earlier.
He looked back up at you, “Do you mean it?”
You nodded quickly, “I mean it. I love you.” You grabbed his hand again, shocked at how much your heart sped up at the contact. Your head was buzzing and your heart was racing in sync with his. The only thing you could think of was Mingyu, Mingyu, Mingyu.
He realised at the same moment as you did, noticing the strange feeling in the air and connecting that this must be what it felt like to find your soulmate. He rushed forward at the same time you did, lips crashing together at the same movement, the kiss so full of love that you never wanted it to end.
It felt so right to be kissing Mingyu. There wasn’t a single worry in your mind as you pulled him as close to you as you could, hands tangling in his messy hair as he cupped your jaw, stroking your cheek with his thumb.
You pulled away breathless. Your eyes were overflowing with so much love for Mingyu that he almost couldn’t stop himself from kissing you again. But he knew you were both out of breath, so he resolved to just hug you instead.
“I’ve waited so long just to say that to you.” He whispered to you and you grinned at his second confession.
“If you had said it earlier, I wouldn’t have been hunting for my soulmate for months not knowing that he was standing right in front of me the whole time!” You complained, hugging him closer and breathing in his cologne which you were suddenly finding to be a very attractive scent. You’d have to steal some of his hoodies later if you could get your hands on them.
“It killed me to see you come back to me disappointed every time.” He mumbled, cupping your cheeks again to admire you.
“I’m so happy it’s you.” You truly meant it. You were already so comfortable with being around Mingyu. Him being your soulmate was the most perfect thing that had ever happened to you. Now that you thought about it, it made so much sense as well. You two were always uncannily perfect for each other, as best friends, and now, as lovers.
