I'm still gonna do proper au posts for all my AU's eventually but I'm in a certain mood and I follow that dopamine like a starving street dog

So. Here's every Makoto from every Arcana Swap I have.

It will be a long post, but I'm putting the bulk of the content under the cut, I know I clog tags sometimes and I apologize

0 - Fool Makoto (Learning to be Young) {P4}

This Makoto was raised strictly by an aunt after the death of her parents, and has since been kicked out of her home. So, she's reuniting with her older sister, who was kicked out for the same reason many years before. Makoto, during her time in Inaba, experiences what being a teenager is all about. She's only got that final year, but even mysterious murders won't keep her from truly living

Ft no rizz Makoto showing up and having every girl just. Fall for her. Epitome of autism swag meme thing. Has a polyquad in it

0 - Fool Makoto (Doomed Toxic Yuri Swap)

After being arrested for something she didn't do, Makoto is sent to live with her older sister in Tokyo while on parole. She intends to keep her head down so she can get into a good school still, but she can't douse the flames of righteous rage in her heart when she encounters injustice. That anger of hers is what landed her in Tokyo, and it'll be the spark that begins a rebellion in those around her

This one has Justice Haru. And they're in a doomed toxic Yuri. For those who need more than fluff in their lives

3 - Empress Makoto (ACAB swap)

Daughter of the police commissioner, Makoto has her whole future pre-determined for her. Her father has been changing, and won't listen to her about not wanting to follow in his footsteps. She wants to be a mechanic, but... If only she had a way to return home to the man she once knew...

In her confidant, she'd be dealing with grief, but also, reuniting with Devil Sae, and trying to fix her future, get out of the school her father set her up for, and into the courses she wants herself

4 - Emperor Makoto (Gender Thieves)

Second palace is Kobayakawa in this. Makoto is his perfect attack dog, kept under his thumb by promise of scholarships and recommendations. The others make Makoto see that she's being strung along, and she breaks free. And, mega rebels. Rebels so hard they throw out their gender. They/he Makoto. Grunge Makoto

Ft trans boy Haru, and MakoHaru are together from the start in this. A soft prep boyfriend who's scary with a bat and his grunge gruff partner who's scared of the dark

6 - Lovers Makoto (Morg Swap)

She graduated early, finished teachers college, and is doing her one year placement at a middle school. The principal is using blackmail to keep her complicit and silent, making her forget the reason she was so passionate about teaching in the first place

Ft Fool Morgana! It also has a Hermit Haru and Magician Joker, this one I'm real proud of

7 - Chariot Makoto (Chaos Swap)

A classic. In an attempt to stand up against Kamoshida and his abuse, Makoto got beat up, and framed for using physical force to get better grades. An outcast and feared by her peers, this is a punk Makoto all the way. If given the chance, she'd risk it all to save the other students, even after all they've done to her.

This one was my first one it's my favourite. It's also mostly silly goofy so

8 - Justice Makoto (Blood Moon Swap)

The darkest of these. Young, Makoto's mother dies. Her father, never in her life before, appears and informs her it was her fault, and demands she make up for it, following his orders, his little psychic assassin. She's filled with anger; at herself, her actions, her father, at those she's told to dispose of. She shakes with rage, a need to tear down everything around her, make everyone else feel how shitty her life was. Her public appearances as a junior detective are firm, and serious. Proper.

Plot includes the discovery that the Fool, Goro, and Makoto were twins. Separated after the death of their mother. A "what if", since in Makoto's arc they were sort of parallels almost?

9 - Hermit Makoto (Polygirls Swap)

This Makoto watched her parents die. A Good cop, an EMT, trying to help someone, when suddenly they, changed, and walked off of a bridge. She's believed it had something to do with her for a long time, but after she's saved from her own distorted heart, she comes to the conclusion that the "Black Mask" had them killed for planning to report a superior for taking bribes from Shido

This is the Fool Ann and Emperor Haru au where the three are gay and together and gay.

12 - Hanged Man Makoto (Age Swap Au)

Makoto, a former soldier, runs a seedy shop in Shibuya to afford her younger sister Sae's hockey fees. She's still carrying the mental and physical scars from her time in service, but will do anything for her younger sister, even if it means letting the cops do whatever to her so she won't get arrested again

This is adult confidant Thieves, so the main cast of this au are the adults, like Sojiro and Sae and Iwai. The Niijima sisters get along a bit better here

19 - Sun Makoto (Yaoi Swap) {I hate that name}

This. This is just an au where literally they're all guys and theys. Whether it's trans guys, NB, CIS, or demi, they're. All guys. So this is a guy Makoto, captain of the debate team at Shujin, who offers the fool speech lessons in exchange for understanding people better. Makoto wants people to stop being scared of him, and wants to stop fearing people at the same time

- Faith Makoto (Uh. I don't have a name for this one)

Trans guy Makoto. Parents died the night he came out, complete accident. So, he's been living as a girl and denying it happened ever since. Only, Makoto is his chosen name. Whoever the Councilor is in this au will mess up and use his dead name and. Big moment

Most of my Makoto's aren't like. Goody. This one is. He'd totally want to be a lawyer. Sweater vest and ties. He's a little gentleman, though he does Aikido, and is gym buddies with Ryuji. Layers

Tales of Vesperia CCS AU headcanons - PART I

So the other day I was looking at a lot of niconico ToV videos, and I found a Cardcaptor Sakura opening parody with Estelle and other ToV characters, which prompted me to think about how such an AU could really work. I got to talk about it a little on discord, and since the more I talked about it, the more ideas I got, I thought, why not?

So, here's a list of stuff about the pre-canon setting of a CCS AU with ToV characters.

Estelle (Sakura) is the main character. Her name is Estellise Heurassein, and she’s 16 years old, in her first year of high school at St Vesperia High. Her father died in a plane accident when she was young but she lost her mother about a year ago. Her friends call her Estelle.

Yuri (Touya) is the son of Estelle’s parents’ friends. His parents also died in the same accident Estelle’s father did. He went to the orphanage, then often switched foster homes until Estelle’s mother decided to take him in about 4 years ago. He and Estelle grew even closer as siblings since Estelle’s mother’s death, and the two of them live alone in their family home. He’s 18, in his 3rd year of high school at St Vesperia High and has the reputation of a troublemaker. He spends most of his free time doing part time jobs, claiming he doesn’t want to live off Estelle’s charity.

Yuri has the ability to see ghosts, as well as some ability to feel magical and spiritual powers, though he doesn’t really understand the full extent of it. This ability caused him some trouble when he was a kid, as he would tell other people about what he saw, but no one would believe him. Estelle’s mother seemed to know, however.

Flynn (Yukito) is Yuri’s childhood friend. They went to school together as kids and Flynn somehow always ended up in the same school as Yuri, even when the latter switched schools when he changed foster homes. He’s the student council president at St Vesperia High, and he and Yuri always butt heads, but they’re also very close friends.

Yuri eventually questioned all this, as well as all the strange things about Flynn – the fact that his parents were never home, for example. Yuri was scared to ask at first, but upon realizing that Flynn himself probably didn’t realize he wasn’t human, and since he knew there were many strange things in this world, he decided that he didn’t care what Flynn was – he was his best friend, and that was enough.

Estelle met Flynn when Yuri got adopted by her mother, and she’s had a huge puppy crush ever since. Yuri acts as if he doesn’t notice, and Flynn is entirely oblivious to it.

Repede (Kero) is Yuri’s dog. Yuri and Flynn found him as a wounded puppy and saved him. Flynn couldn’t take him in, so Yuri asked Estelle’s mother, who was okay with keeping the dog. Yuri knows Repede’s not really a dog, and he guessed that the reason why he understood him so much – or that Repede was so smart – was that he was some sort of magic entity, but he feels a sense of kinship because of his powers. Repede doesn’t dislike Estelle, but she takes it very personally that he seems to like Yuri much more than herself. Having him around when Estelle’s mother passed was a great help for both Estelle and Yuri.

Ioder (Tomoyo) is Estelle’s cousin and best friend. It’s partly thanks to his parents that Estelle and Yuri are able to keep living in their house together. Ioder wants to be a fashion designer, and he always gets Estelle to try on the outfits he designed.

Raven (Terada-sensei) is Estelle and Ioder’s homeroom teacher. He’s a bit weird, but he can be reliable as well!

Judith (Mizuki-sensei) is Yuri’s ex-girlfriend. She’s actually a bit older than him in this AU. She has the power to see in the future, and the reason she and Yuri became close in the first place was because of their shared experience of having spiritual powers. She broke up with him before going to study abroad, but the both of them are still on relatively good terms.

Patty, Karol and Nan could be some of Estelle’s classmates. Not entirely sure about them yet but I’d like to have a short arc about Karol and Yuri!

RPG Review: Misao Definitive Edition

Ah, Misao. A cornerstone of 2010s rpgmaker games. Horror, parody, a genuinely fun vibe that is so derivative yet so distinctive and memorable. A remastered edition was published on Steam in 2017, and I'm here to go over the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Note: I am reviewing the remastered edition, not the 2011 edition; however part of the review will be comparing the two.

The Good:

The graphics on this game were probably the biggest upgrade from the original. It is still recognizably Misao, but the quality is clearer, the characters are more detailed and look like video game characters instead of dolls, and the backgrounds are simultaneously less cluttered and more detailed where it counts. Beyond that, there are the items to collect. I am, admittedly, ambivalent on the change from body parts to personal items, but it does provide a greater cohesion with the story. There are other minor changes (such as Aki hiding in a bear suit instead of a corpse), but nothing that detracted from overall experience. In fact, the updated game is well worth it for the increased detail and streamlined concepts.

I really enjoyed the differences between male and female Aki. Female Aki is the 'true' game experience, but playing male Aki highlights how unhinged the female version is. Like seriously, if you play the female version first and then the male (which is the best order) you feel like you just woke up the day after the purge. Male Aki is so normal compared to female Aki and it really comes off well both as two distinctive versions and as a humorous comparison. I played male Aki after playing female Aki and felt like a 22 year old coming to grips with the homoerotic friendship I had in school that was detrimental to my mental health. I felt like I had finished reading a manga about toxic yuri. I felt like watching Jennifer's Body. Female Aki is psychotic.

The Bad:

After talking about how great the new graphic are comparatively, this is going to feel kind of nitpicky. I actually think the older graphic lend a certain atmosphere that the new graphics don't quite capture. Don't get me wrong, there are certain elements I much appreciate, such as the floor tiles not being so busy and the character sprites not looking so wooden or having doll proportions. The rooms (if not the halls) themselves just look better. It's just that, despite all the demons and blood and general 'spooky' nonsense, I don't feel like I'm in an underworld demon realm like I did with the old graphics. It was a charm reminiscent of crt tvs and atari games that is becoming increasingly rare in modern game graphics.

The Ugly:

I hate the extra endings. Not the bad and true endings, but the after-game ending where you go save everyone from hell and help them reincarnate. Some were good, some were ok, but the teacher's story put such a bad taste in my mouth. For one, I was genuinely uninterested in his story or what made him decide to be a predator on his students. For two, honestly, this is a game that largely rests on being the video game equivalent of a bad haunted house. The teacher's story is the one element that doesn't fit the vibe of the rest of the game well, and that makes it stick out like a sore thumb. Honestly, I get what they were going for, but its clunky at best. I liked the entire rest of the game until this part which made me almost not play the male run.

Summary:

This is a fun game! Its not perfect, and personal preference will decide which version of the game you like best, but it absolutely holds up as a remake and is just as silly to play through as the other versions. There's a ton of theorizing to be done between this game, the earlier versions, and Mad Father (another game by the same dev which is referenced a lot in Misao). If I ever feel like playing all of those games back to back I might make my own list, but its fun to find what you can and come up with your own theories! Personally, my favorite part was collecting all the different ways to die like I was filling out my pokemon index, haha

Here’s a list of English-released manga I’ve currently got on pre-order, and manga series I ordered before but won’t be continuing with the series.

As a note: Some of these titles have been released but I have not received them yet due to a issues with covid backlog effected how things are released. I personally find that if you pre-order it tends to get you manga quicker. It seems there is more pressure to keep up with the new release schedule than chip away at the backlog.

I’m starting with the stuff I’ve already read some of and confirmed enjoyment, then stuff I’m shooting in the dark for, and finally series I have tried recently and have discontinued.

My Androgynous Boyfriend

It is rare for straight shit to end up in my library but My Androgynous boyfriend is an exception that will surprise no-one since it’s pretty queer adjacent. This story is mostly a couple being lovey-dovey between jokes about sexuality and gender but (so far) isn’t problematic at all. The female lead is quite enjoyable as she’s well-balanced and has agency throughout. There’s even ace representation! It’s very low-stakes, wholesome, and sweet so far. (Volume 3 is set to release in November.)

My Excitement Level: The gentle about to sink into a bubble bath variety

Even Though We’re Adults

Story & Art by: Takako Shimura Publisher: Seven Seas

Takako is also the creator of Sweet Blue Flowers and Wandering son. I have dipped by toe in to both those series. I overall find their writing kinda meandering and tepid (might just be me) but technically pretty solid. I am hopeful for this series since it features adults....if the title didn’t make it obvious. I was intrigued by the one character being married but the man finding out about the affair quickly and reacting more realistically and interestingly than the average male love interest in a Yuri. I also found myself relating at bit to Akari’s angst about being unlucky with relationships with women. I also do enjoy the artwork! This one is the most likely of my followed series to be dropped at some point. (Volume 2 of this manga was set to release in June this year.)

My Excitement Level: Cautious Optimism

Kase-san and Yamada

This is a series I keep going back to. While it is the very typical low-stakes bubbly, cutesy School age Yuri...it is a very good version of that. Just warm bubble bath vibes. (Volume 7 is set to release in February of next year. I think it was originally supposed to be released this May but was bumped back.)

This, as I understand it, is a slow-burn romance about two delinquent girls. I have heard good things about the novel and the anime series! However I prefer manga to novels and don’t have a funimation account so I went to snag it in manga form. (Volume 1 was set to release in February this year and 2 in September)

My Excitement Level: Cautious Optimism

The Girl I want is so handsome!

The premise is a young lady has a crush on a handsome older girl who’s oblivious to her advances. When she tries to confess she instead gets roped into being the club manager of the basketball team that her crush is a part of. So it feels like it may end up cycling through 2 jokes and be so deep in the stereotypical manga bullshit you can easily-predict its beats volumes in advance. HOWEVER that is also a premise that is similar to Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun which is legitimately a hilarious series. Also I fucking love butch/stud/masc-presenting women/AFAB people. So I’m willing to risk “The same Anime bullshit” for good jokes and a cute lezzy romance with a beautiful butch. (Volume 1 is set to release of December of this year.)

My Excitement Level: Pretty nervous actually. I hope it works out!

Monologue Woven for You

A woman gives up on a career in theater gets tangled in a relationship with a woman passionately pursuing theater. Since it is set between college age women, and appears to be about more personal and mature themes I am interested. (Volume 1 I BELIEVE is supposed to be released in February of next year.)

Two daughters of feuding families meet in secret. This is by the same author of After Hours. I read a bit of After Hours and found it fine but boring since it seemed without conflict. Conflict doesn’t seem to be in short supply with a story like this! While I enjoy the sugary-sweet high school lesbian romances...those are not in short-supply. So I am always hungry for something darker, meatier, more mature. (Volume 1 is set to release next February)

My Excitement Level: Cautious Optimism

5 Seconds Before The Witch Falls In Love

It appears to be a playful fantasy about a Witch and Witch-hunter who’s antagonism turns romantic. This may end up one note and stupid...but I’m always hear for queer romances set in high-fantasy and I haven’t read a Yuri where rivals turns to lovers. (Volume 1 is set to release next February)

My Excitement Level: Low-key

A former delinquent runs into her high school rival. After losing a fight to her she agrees to her terms...her terms being to go out on a date with her. I mean the title alone makes me want to pick it up! It may run afoul of bad anime humor, but I’m hoping with the fact that it’s full of gay adult delinquents that it’ll be a little different. (Volume 1 is set to release next February)

I’m in love with the Villainess

A woman gets reborn into her favorite Otome game but she wants to romance the villiain! I had heard a ton of great things about the novel but I picked up the manga version. (If the novel is totally different I can’t speak to it.) For me, the writing is ham-handed, the jokes flop 90% of the time, and the fact the lead’s only personality trait seems to be ~obsessed with a bully~ really dampens this title. Her advances are so aggressive and unwanted I honestly started feeling bad for a spoiled rich bully. I will say it’s saving grace is the fact that the lead is masochistically into the villainess’ tsundere abusiveness. For me I hate tsundere romances if framed like, “I like you DESPITE your insults.” It is only tolerable if it’s instead, “I like you cause you tell it like it is. I’m a dirty little pig. Please step on this bad little piggy!”

Our Teachers are Dating

Well one reason I stopped the series is that cover you see up there. The sex in this series is fade to black but FOR SOME REASON the 3rd cover has them both butt naked. But on a less superficial note, the story is about two teachers who start dating. And while cute at points, I was just underwhelmed. I think a part of it, is the fact that this behaves like a stereotypical high school romance...and while set in a high school...these are grown ass women not 15 year olds. So I have less patience with the, “Gosh when will I get to kiss my girlfriend?” bullshit. I mean, I would hesitate to call it bad...but it’s just not a good version of it’s brand of bullshit.

Breath of Flowers

Absolute train-wreck, this is hands down the worst Yuri I have ever bought. The story is nonsensical and all over the place. There is a love rival who’s trying to break the two of them up so she can get with Gwyn...but then switches mid-gear to put in a lot of effort to bring them together intentionally...but she also still wants to hook up with Gwyn...it’s very ???????????? The main conflict of Gwyn is hiding their gender so they can play basketball on the boy’s team (not well explained) is built up hugely and resolved with a hand flick. There is a melodramatic moment where a school nurse says more or less, “GIVE IT UP YOU’LL NEVER BE A BOY!” And it’s like “OH SHIT! The fact that Gwyn is on the basketball team is cause he’s a transboy trying to live life as a boy! Oh gosh it makes so much more sense now!” But the author seems to not even know that trans people exist cause the story bumbles along as if that scene never happened. The closest we get is at the end Gwyn is like, “Look I’m learning to do make-up on myself to make you happy lawl!” Which is I GUESS supposed to be, “NO NO DON’T WORRY ALL OF GWYN’S GENDER STUFF WAS JUST THERE TO MAKE THE MAIN CHARACTER SEXUALLY CONFUSED WHEN SHE DISCOVERS GWYN’S TRUE GENDER! HER TRUE GENDER IS 100% CIS WOMAN CAUSE SHE DID MAKE-UP ONCE! IT’S FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!” Like whaaaaaaaaat? And it ends on a very random scene which doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the story. Ugh just very bad do not interact!

A White Rose in Bloom

Story & Art by: Asumiko Nakamura Publisher: Seven Seas

At an all girls catholic school a young woman falls for a mysterious foreign student. I grabbed this cause it’s gay and I overall like Asumiko Nakamura’s work (she also does Doukyusei, double mints, and others.) However I was just not grabbed with this title. I just felt like I wasn’t getting what was making the MC pants on head obsessed with Steph. Also the lead’s mother tells her that she’s getting divorced and therefore will no longer have money to pay for the university and she’s framed like a super bad person for this. Like I get why the MC (a teenager) would think that something like that is THE END OF THE WORLD! But I remember them really framing the mom like a selfish bitch for this...when like...it’s well established that her mom and dad’s relationship has been toxic for YEARS and that they TRIED SO HARD to fix it. OH WELL! This might be good but it just didn’t grab me in the 1st volume.

Before entered the Balan Theater/Wonderworld as become chess player and then corrupted as Fortstopher IV by Lance as in 12 years-old, he's studying math and science as become problem-solver even scientist, mathematician, researcher, theorist. In 14 years-old, he saw his classmates playing the chess as he trying it while he was studied by his genius classmate and then become chess player as he's got intellectual. In 24 years-old, he was slowly become obsession of win the chess as become chess champion as he's got gentleman yet competitive. In 27 years-old, he saw Betty as fallen love and then met which he entered the another chess challenge and then married. In 33 - 34 years-old, he enter the Balan Theater/Wonderworld when feeling doubt and pity by himself after loss of chess and death of his wife to meet his friends and Balan as playing his main role of On the Board of the Traveler as his stage name was Checkered King, then he got a first lose of chess challenge and he's getting enraged as self-doubt which he caused to chaos of chess pieces and trophies as his wife was died of illness as he become alone and cooking his food was his hobby as before entered Balan Theater/Wonderworld, and then he got a corrupted by Lance.

Become Fortstopher IV as his corrupted, he protect his set stage from two heroes as he was boss/king of Chess Kingdom/On the Board of the Traveler, Leo Craig and Emma Cole, he finally got defeated as freed by them. In 35 years-old, he traveling his friends as new life from last years but he's feeling worried about his 11 friends which acting creepy when enter Wonderworld as last one of infected of Inhabitants by his friends when they got infected as gains his powers from inside, after infected of "corrupted" friends, he's still control of himself but his physical form was half-corrupted form of Fortstopher IV as he's got powers which source of negative emotions from his King Chess Piece. I finally read High Rise Invasion until the 158th chapter

So here random thoughts I got while reading it.

Honestly, I didn’t wanted to read/watch the show because it’s an ecchi. No jugement about this genre, but it makes me uncomfortable... and even more if the character are underage. Anyway. Regarding this, it wasn’t as bad I expected it to be, save from Kuon’s shower and the jiggling boobs of Saito. I don’t really care for panties so it was most of the time okay for me. I still don’t like it that being say.

The drawings are so gorgeous!! Especially building’s panorama. It’s just w o w.

I can’t say it was a boring reading. There is always something to be interested or action. It’s doesn’t resonated with my own beliefs but I admit I enjoy it for what it is.

I though Kuon was baby. And she is!!! <3 <3 love this girl and her character development. There is some hints that makes her character to be much sharper she appears and it made me shout “go go girl!”

Yuri is also much more clever than I initially though! Rika taught her well.

Tho, not really fan of Rika himself; his way to think is just... too weird for me, ahah.

I may be a huge fan for slow burn, but Mayuko’s crush is just too cute. When is the wedding??

Yuri: So, you and Sniper Mask... there is something, right? :3c Mayuko: You stupid donkey - I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU NOT HIM!!

There is so many characters, which is both a good and a bad thing. It’s realistic and it dynamise the whole story. But in the other hand, it’s harder to have sympathy for all of them. Saito, for example, intrigues me but her only trait for now is “I must be strong like the Honjo”...

Regarding minor characters, I really like Yoshida because he is awfully relatable. Yukio is also interesting as he’s a much older character - it’s not that often you see gramps in survival. I don’t like the dad (forgot his name) but the “love makes you evil” trope is well played and I wonder how his daughter will react when she’ll learn how awful he is...

Aikawa is so G R O S S I just can’t... He is the embodiment of “love to hate” for me.

When he laughed at Rika for his girly name - man, I’m not a fan of the latter but I feel it. And that piece of crap was a teacher. Y I K E S.

I wished Yayoi was more evil; for now it’s very much implied she only acts this way because of the mask/Aikawa’s orders. Too bad: I think it would have made her relationship with her son much more interesting. Maybe it would had be redundant with the “dad’s arc” tho...

I laughed so hard when Dealer Mask wished Rika to become a God so he could save her. The way it was formulated sound like he’ll become her knight in shining armor, save her and marry right after.

In the same way, I’m unsure if it’s the French translation or not, but Yoshida said to Rika he looks “plutôt pas mal” which can both said he found him neat or hot (or even both). Context doesn’t help at all.

Sniper Mask and Rika have such ‘you’ll simp for me now’ power that even foes (Aikacrap, Dealer Mask and White Feather) goes doki-doki around them. It’s so hilarious, at least until you realize it breaks the 4th wall.

How could I not talk about our lord and savior Sniper Mask? He is. Perfect. Please you who is reading this, I hope you’ll found your Sniper Mask in real life. You all deserved it.

The big brother way he is with Kuon?? How he is considered his teammates and recognized they are being helpful??? Being probably the only male character to adverts his gaze every time something lewd happen?? When he closed Swimmer Mask’s eyes, even if he was just an awful bully - it was just respectful and so human, especially in that type of media and the univers itself. Chef kiss.

That being said, his drama king tendencies make me more than once mumble “he’s impossible - it’s impossible to be so stupid!!”

It’s also interesting how Mamoru, Sniper Mask and Rika are embodiment the sin of pride in different ways.

Sniper Mask is all in vainglory, wanting to look cool at any cost, even his own life.

Rika is both pride and vainglory. He’s much more susceptible than Sniper Mask when his cool attitude is about to be shattered and is much self-centered (thinking his teammates are a weight to be reunited with her sister, gets upset at the idea to be less cool than his little sister...)

And Mamoru... is persuaded to have the right ideology and cannot be reasoned, lost in his hubris to rules his ‘perfect world’.

A Love to Kill (2005) - I own Japanese DVDs of this, I was so obsessed. A dark, intense melo in which Rain gets a job as a bodyguard to a rising young star played by Shin Minah. His plan is to seduce and wreck her to avenge his dead brother (who he believes killed himself after she heartlessly left him for fame), but he recons without his own impossible feelings for her or the extent of SMA’s internal damage. They remain one of the most impossible, messed-up, intense, doomed OTPs I’ve ever shipped. Stock tissues.

Beyond amazing. Jang Hyuk, Oh Ji Ho and Lee Da Hae are all on fire and if you ever watch only one sageuk, make it this one.

Delightful Girl Chunhyang (2005) - back when Hong Sisters were consistently good, this is a modern take on the famous folk tale. Our heroine is a studious poor girl and our hero a ne’er-do-well son of a local prosecutor. There is arranged marriage, true love surviving some insane sacrifice, one of my all time favorite OTPs, and a heroine and hero that grow into people I was obsessed with. See, my joke answer is “getting into the state geography bee finals in eighth grade largely by accident,” because that WAS pretty funny (one of the other classrooms in my school couldn’t find a finalist so they recommended me to take their class’s place (to my grade school rival’s IMMENSE disappointment) and then I somehow not only beat the rest of the school but also all but like 100 kids in the state???? uh, so my mom used to work for a vet and we’re suckers for a charity case, so, Bunny, Pea Bird, Corey, Minnie, Tammy, Baby Hugs, Harry, Hermione, Ron (technically? He was a very sick baby and we only had him for one day), Leila, Blaise, Lukas, Kody, Yuri, Chloe, and Taz (all cats, not even counting the cat that I don’t think I was alive for), Phoebe (our dog), and then the rats (Frisk, Chara, Cricket, and Chai, though they were/are my sister’s). Of those, Harry, Hermione, Leila, Blaise, Yuri, Chloe and Taz are the only cats currently alive, and Cricket and Chai are the only ratties left. (Ron was just plain sick, Lukas and Kody were Blaise’s age( Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a BITCH), the rest of them were just old)

28. What I want to be when I get older.

That’s....surprisingly difficult. I went to college to be an actor, and it would be neat to do that, but I’m not...the right personality for it? I struggled a lot with acting classes cause of being largely self-taught (thanks high school) and also doing musicals requires voice lessons and I’m never doing that again (thanks college but especially that specific voice teacher, college did their best).

So I’m doin a lot of soul searching these days. I’d like to be a published author, but that’s also difficult. Save me...

20 details you might have missed in AnR

“Hello! So here’s a list of details you might have missed from AnR, either the anime, manga, official doujins KnR or any official sources.

1) AnR had a social game called Akuma no Riddle AK released in 2012 and shut down in 2015 where several AnR characters have a profile card. Those guards revealed the age of those characters: Tokaku, Haru, Hitsugi, Chitaru, Nio and Banba are 15, Isuke 19 and Mizorogi 25.

2) Otoya’s age is revealed in the fifth official doujins, she’s 16. It’s also implied that Shiena may be 16 too.

3) According to an official sketch, Yuri Meichi is 30 years old and her height is 168-170cm.

4) It’s stated that Suzu is born during the Meiji Restoration era (1868 to 1912), so if the series took place in 2014 like the anime does, she would be between 102 and 146 years old.

5) Isuke’s birthday (June 29th) happened during Class Black, she turned 20. It’s confirmed that Haruki is younger than her. She’s not the only one who has her birthday during Class Black. Since Japanese school years starts in April, it’s possible that Otoya, whose birthday is April 1st, happened when she was at Class Black. Suzu’s birthday also happened during Class Black (July 14th) and possibly Banba too (May 30th). It means Otoya turned 16 at the start of Class Black and Banba turned 16 during Class Black. Yuri’s birthday is April 29th, meaning that she also turned one year older during the series (so should be 31 now). Kouko too (July 25th) but she wasn’t at Class Black anymore.

Speaking of birthdays, it’s possible to establish how long Class Black lasted. School started in April. When Isuke had her birthday, Haruki was still there. Which means that between the first attempt and Haruki’s attempt, there were almost 3 months. Since Suzu did her attempt on her birthday, there are less than two weeks between Haruki’s attempt and hers. Banba and Isuke’s attempts happening during typhoon season, which is July to October in Japan. Since it seemed to be the first one we can assume their attempt happened in July, so right after Suzu’s. It’s implied that Sumireko went right after them, so either end of July or beginning of August. So overall, Class Black lasted approximately 4 months, April to July/August.

6) Haru’s hair may look like pigtails, it’s actually not.

7) It’s mentioned that Isuke likes men older than 40, but she ended up dating Haruki, meaning she’s bisexual.

8) According to characters’ info, Suzu’s least favourite food is meat, meaning she might be a vegetarian. Shinya’s hobby is crosswords while Yuri’s hobby is going to the gym. To see all the characters’ info click here: Characters guide.

9) In the manga, we can see Suzu’s underwear and they have floral motif on them. Foreshadowing that she was actually a granny? And speaking of underwear, apparently, some of Shiena’s bra had a lot of paddings. Hm...

10) In the manga, Suzu showed a newspaper to her classmates, about Jack the Ripper of the 21st, telling them it’s Otoya’s doing. The number 29 is written on it and the wiki incorrectly said it’s the number of victims while actually, it’s the age of the victim. In KnR during the news, we saw that Otoya’s victim was a 27 years old hairdresser. Looks like Otoya has a type.

11) In KnR 7 it’s revealed that Haruki doesn’t have a father.

12) KnR implied twice that Chitaru and Hitsugi might have slept together during Class Black. Whether it’s canon or not is up to debate.

13) In the manga Tokaku claimed to not have a family, meaning that her grandmother might be deceased.

14) Isuke actually had a brother when she was still living with her biological parents, but Eisuke arrived too late to save him and he died.

15) Kaiba is actually a psychology teacher, he doesn’t teach technical assassination, which means he may not be an assassin.

16) Yuri and Kaiba actually know each other as shown in the manga, and Kaiba was Mizorogi’s senpai at school. If Mizorogi is 25, then Kaiba must be 26-28 years old.

17) In the anime, we saw the characters’ reaction to their test and for some of them, their result. Kouko (98) had the best grade of the class, followed by Haru (94) and then Hitsugi and Chitaru (91), meaning they are all academically good. Shiena looks at her test and said “guess that’s it”, implying that she might be average. Isuke had the worst result, Nio didn’t want to look at her result meaning she might know it’s bad, Banba said that they didn’t have to give her back meaning it’s bad, Suzu said the biology test was profound (which doesn’t really said if she did well or not), Tokaku had 80, Sumireko only said “oh my” while seeing her result.

18) In both the anime and manga, Kouko is implied to be good at drawing.

19) Each time a student was expelled, a flower was put on their desk. The flower is only shown in the anime, but in the manga certain characters (especially Suzu) explained the meaning behind the flower. Otoya is mountain lilies, which means “the joy of life”. Kouko is red spider lily, which Suzu said it means “I’m waiting to meet you again”, but it can also mean death. Haruki is verbena flowers, which symbolize family love. Shiena is s thistle flower, which symbolizes revenge. Chitaru is red roses which symbolize love and Hitsugi is white roses, which symbolize innocent or childlike. Suzu is a red tulip, which means “declaration of love”. Banba is moonflowers and Japanese bindweeds, their Japanese names mean day face and night face and mean strong bonds. Isuke is red carnations which means mother’s love, and Sumireko is Iceland poppies which symbolize comfort.

20) Yuri as the same past as Haru and also went through Class Black, but in her case, she won it in only 6 days. Wow.

Edelgard's romance appeals to me because of its intensity, but I understand that that's why some dislike it. And if Edelgard was only romanceable by m!Byleth, I might not have liked her romance at all. A female student falling for her male teacher bothers and bores the shit out of me. The same dynamic but gay is acceptable and interesting to me. Maybe I'm hypocritical for that, but sometimes I'm just gay and tired and I'll take what scraps I can get when it comes to romance.

For me I really like it in part because their romance, with a female professor, falls very, very heavily into a kind of narrative I am familiar with. Namely that of a Blonde and a Brunette in yuri and s. There’s some things that are mixed around of course. Edelgard’s the one with lighter colored hair and the Professor is the older of the pair. Those are usually reversed with the roles. But if we ignore that then we have...A moody woman with some sort of deep seated emotional trauma. In this case dead siblings and torture. Dead siblings is actually pretty common with this kind of narrative setup. Anyway she’s got that down and she’s the moody one who is ‘darker’ in temperament. Her darkness in this case being ‘may commit all the war crimes’ and she moodily moods about this.And then you have the Professor. The Professor isn’t like the stereotypical sort of this character. She’s not perky and genki girl and what not. But she is the brighter of the two. You’re given dialogue options allowing the Professor to be like ‘No I want to try to save everyone,’ and these are directly contrasted with Edelgard’s ‘Well sometimes you can’t save everyone and sometimes people have to die’. And the Professor is the turning point. The thing that gets Edelgard to not fall. (An aside: Her being a teacher is also fairly traditional. The roles often fall to a senpai and her kouhai, or to a student and her teacher/the school nurse. Though it is, again, usually the younger of the pair who provides this pulling the other from their own inner demons role.)This comes up too in the metaphors of taking her hand and the Professor being the sun that she seeks like a red rose. Flowers and hand holding? These are like. Primo metaphor for this sort of narrative. The hand holding scene is like. A turning point. In some cases it is often the end point of the relationship development. The melodramatic climax. Flowers are a more complicated thing and something I am learning about more as time goes on. But there are a variety of them that get used in s and yuri for a variety of reasons. The mountain lilies used in Marimite, for example, are symbols of purity. The mountain lily is the heart of the Virgin Mary personified as a flower and the love between the girls is that pure. Roses are The Other Big Flower Metaphor. Showing up in things as varied as Yoshiya Nobuko’s Yellow Roses, the aforementioned Marimite, and Revolutionary Girl Utena.It’s really well worn territory for me. I’m not sure if they meant for this to be the case and really the kind of narrative does show up with het ships too. Though usually the one at risk of falling is the man and not the woman, I suppose. But like in terms of the broader tradition of yuri Edeleth just slides naturally into place. And it’s a very compelling example at that. It’s kind of hard for me to be as invested in the idea with a male Professor. Something about it just doesn’t quite gel for me. But that may be because I’m just as familiar with the archetypes in question as I am. This shit’s been my bread and butter for at least 13 years. Maybe 14? It’s been a while.As an aside. Edelgard’s timeskip outfit. Besides my going SHE HAS HORNS. My first thought was of Himemiya Anthy’s classic Rose Bride outfit. Pretty red dress for a morally questionable woman demonized by large portions of the cast and one who is abused, whose route is called Crimson Flower and who compares herself to a rose in her theme song...I can’t say ‘Oh yeah no that’s what they were getting at,’ but it’s really hard not to make the connection.

Tales of Mash up: Modern AU

I was taking a shower after I was making that cake and this came to me. If I were to write this, there would be heavy religious overtones. The characters would of course be older and there would be a lot of discussion about sex, sexual orientation and society. As usual it would be about relationships cause that what I like writing about the most. Also Ludger Whump because I’m terrible.

Velvet Crowe

Convicted felon, released on Parole after serving six years for voluntary manslaughter. Works at Elympios as a cook as a part of the city’s Second Chance Program. Even though the court ruled that she acted the way she did to protect her brother and nephew she doesn’t have custody of them. Arrested before she finished high school, Velvet just wants to save money and get her family back. Currently living with her friends Magilou and Rokurou who she is totally not sleeping with. Not a church goer, but attends a support group there per her parole officer.

Father Sorey Izuchi

A young newly ordained priest who just wants to do right by his parishioners. Helps run the local food pantry. Kind and well liked, he’s quickly becoming a staple in the community. Opens the church's doors to support various support groups like the one Yuri and Velvet are forced to attend by their parole officers. He’s familiar with almost everyone and that’s why he’s under so much scrutiny. There are quite a few rumors going around about him and Mikleo, a faithful parishioner who’s seen picking him up from the church on certain days.

Dr. Jude Mathis

A doctor in the making finishing up his residency. From a town much smaller than this, he’s a bit naive. Has a true Spirit of Service so he’s a devout church goer and volunteer, Sorey is one of his closest friends and he tries to quell the rumors on his own. He struggles to come to terms with his decision to go into a system that doesn’t benefit patients. Particularly his low-income patients. He sees these people working themselves sick just to have to come into the food pantry the next day. He wants to be a part of the system to change it but has no idea where to start.

Milla Maxwell

The eccentric heiress to Maxwell Industries, a Healthcare supplies distributor. She went to nursing school and has extensive experience in working with a caring or patients, she’s just weird. Weird and rich, meaning she no one cares to tell her what is and isn’t okay because no one wants to tell her no. A church-goer just like Jude, she often makes large donations to the food pantry but doesn’t donate her time. It’s almost impossible to relate to people on a personal level, so she reaches out to Jude - a medical professional - to pick his brain about the current state of the medical field. A foodie, she’s a frequent customer at Elympios.

Sous Chef Ludger Kresnik

Ludger is a hardworking Sous Chef at Elympios. He’s pretty well liked among all the cooks. Has custody of his niece Elle, despite his age. Works extremely hard to provide a good life for his niece who is traumatized by her father’s murder and has a lot of discipline problems in school. He’s served in the military but doesn’t talk about his service often. He doesn’t talk much at all, actually. He’s good at what he does an people will go out their way to dine there if Ludger is in the kitchen. Despite his popularity, he doesn’t make much money. Sometimes visits the food pantry when times are tight. Sorey has tried to offer other charity, only to get shut down.

Asbel Lhant, CIPSW

A social worker that specializes in Child Welfare in military families, being a military brat himself. A foster parent and family man, Asbel is naturally very critical of how people raise their children. He’s seen people do terrible things to children and is determined to protect them by any means necessary. He’s well liked around the city and by some very important people, including Milla Maxwell. A caretaker at heart, he sponsors his friend Richard’s medical care and visits him often. He has regular meetings with Velvet, helping her in her efforts to get custody or visitation rights of her brother and nephew. He makes regular welfare checks to Ludger’s house, so far no read flags, but he has some legitimate concerns for the younger man’s health.

Luke Fon Fabre

Professional little shit raising hell at the local private secondary school. Raised mostly by his brother, he doesn’t listen to his parents and is a fierce lover, taking risks and mouthing off to teachers for attention. Otherwise, no one notices him. He’s either a nuisance or he’s invisible. His brother isn’t the most affectionate person and is often just dragged around wherever Asch goes. Often attends the church on days Father Van comes to speak and doesn’t necessarily like Father Sorey. Is often forced to volunteers at the food pantry but doesn’t see the point of it.

Yuri Lowell

A former soldier and convicted felon in that order. Served five year sentence and 2 years of parole for breaking and entering and aggravated assault instead of voluntary manslaughter due to the circustances. During this parole, he’s been forced to take part in a support group called the Second Chance Program. The program helped him and Velvet ind a job at the Elympios. He and Velvet are actually pretty close and have managed to make friends with the sous chef. He lives on a less reputable part of town with his roommates Raven and Judith. No one really knows what his relationship is with Deacon Flynn Scifo and he’s content to keep it to himself.

Thank you again @technoxslayer360 @dasjansel @corvid-moon @incoherentmoose @cake-and-roses and @teeny-weeny-ducklings for your lovely responses! Unfortunately, the characters I've shown are from THE story, so it will probably be years before I have it complete. I will, however, post excerpts, and I'll write scenarios that you request, like "tol and smol," "person A and person B," AUs, or general shenanigans. I encorage all pairings, minus sexual ones with Uri since they're asexual.

In the meantime, and to help me practice my writing, I started writing my first "fanfiction," if you will. I love yaoi, yuri, shoujo, and dating sims, and I wanted to make a story that pokes fun at the flaws of those tropes, and also have a much more realistic take of it. It was first just meant to be only for my eyes, but it's sort of become it's own thing. I've written 70k words in about 2 months, which is novel length. I realize now that it's a little too important to keep to myself. It's about discovering your sexuality, finding self worth, the lines of consent, enduring abusive relationships, battling severe trauma, learning to stand up for yourself, and learning to accept yourself. It's heavily based off of things that have happened to me irl and has been surprisingly cathartic to write.

I need beta readers, especially since I'm so inexperienced. I would like to ask you if you would consider becoming one. However, this is an incredibly graphic story. There is s*x, there is r*pe, there is a little blood, and there is a lot of psychological abuse. It is not a gentle story. It will have a happy ending, though. I totally get if you don't want to be a beta reader and respect if you say no and won't pry as to the reason why. If you could spread this around and help me find more beta readers, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Now, onto the OCs!

Problem is, he realizes he's not so much the innocent school boy he's led himself and everyone else to believe. Devin has to come to terms with this crisis of character while trying to figure out how not to get taken advantage of. Devin is a sweet bean with way too many problems.

Flopping between being being patient, understanding, and giving, and aggressive, possessive, and scary, Devin is completely confused by Jaxon's behavior. Does Jaxon actually care about him or does he just consider Devin his plaything? Either way, Jaxon seems to never get in trouble, no matter what he does.

Hannah Johnson (The Knight)

Age: 17 (Don't worry. Nothing sexual happens with her until after she turns 18.)

Is William really trying to be protective, or is he just someone else attempting to take advantage of Devin?

Damon Godswin (The Ice King)

It was a particularly long training day; that kind of when everybody seemed to have a problem with Yuri, starting with Lilia who nagged him that he was losing his flexibility, and then the English teacher who picked at his accent and grammar. Fanfiction/Writing Meme

1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

/eyes bear novel waiting to be edited so it can be an actual readable manuscript /hugs BotW fic closer anyway

2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?

I’m not regretful for writing “World Wide Story”, but it did feature several problematic/lazy tropes of the fandom that I would not indulge anymore.

3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

I actually am fairly linear but 1) I outline very extensively 2) have an email draft saved solely to jot down paragraphs or conversations that need immediate documentation

4) favorite character you’ve written

MATVEY KOURINEV (he’s from the bear novel)

Gilly from WWS holds a dear place in my heart, as does Francis.

I’m really happy with how I was able to portray Maru and Abigail in my Stardew fic.

5) character you were most surprised to end up writing

Francis was a big darkhorse. Likewise with Sam from Stardew Valley.

The countess from the bear novel is surprisingly hilarious.

6) something you would go back and change in your writing that it’s too late/complicated to change now

I still don’t like the title “Hold Your Destiny”. I wish I could change it but with a substantial amount of subscribers and beautifully loyal commenters the brand’s stuck

7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

Nope.... mostly.

I won’t deny I write fanfic to people IRL, but I won’t mention it off the bat in public spaces. I’m not embarrassed by it, but it’s exhausting to get into defending or explaining it. I’ve got plenty of original work to chat about anyway.

8) favorite genre to write

I actually LOVE slice of life! Mundane day to day stuff is my jelly and jam!!

9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?

Stop writing and consume other media. Every idea is recycled anyway.

10) write in silence or with background noise? with people or alone?

It doesn’t really matter; works out all those ways. I do like my weekly writing crew though because of the accountability.

11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

Character development (clearer objective/intention behind actions), consistent POV, axing out the rambling backstory/descriptive padding to focus on the action

I tend to be slightly lazier with my fanfiction though because I see it as a medium where self-indulgence ought to be allowed. It’s a strength of the genre.

12) your weaknesses as an writer

Individual narrative voices especially in alternating first person POVs, creating conflict (because I love my sweet slices of life, I’ve been told that sometimes things fall into place a little TOO perfectly for my characters even if they do have challenges up ahead)

God. Damn. Titles.

13) your strengths as an writer

Vocabulary, dialogue, and balanced description (”big vs small moments” as my teacher used to say).

14) do you make playlists for your current wips?

nope

15) why did you start writing?

....because it’s fun??

And because I am good at it. It came a lot more naturally to me than music or drama despite the fact I’ve had years of practice in those fields, and I also feel more confident in my skill here than I ever did there.

16) are there any characters who haunt you?

Ursa and Yurie hover behind my headboard, Matvey glowers at the end of the bed and Polina is my personal poltergeist wailing from the ceiling. Because I’m supposed to be married to the bear novel but instead I’m having a torrid affair with Zelink fanfic.

Meanwhile, Gillian, Frances, and Tonia are sobbing in a corner because I shut them in a folder and avoided them for over a year (I’ll rescue you guys soon I promise)

17) if you could give your fledgling writer self any advice, what would it be?

“GO TO TUESDAY WRITING MORE GOSH DON’T BE LAZY”

18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?

The age when I read and devoured the most books were about 8-13 years old, so I loves me middle grade something fierce. Sharon Creech, Jerry Spinelli - faves faves faves. And actually, the Redwall series probably has had the biggest impact on how I view and write the fantasy genre. I’m serious.

And since my final year of undergrad theatre major life was basically just dramaturging the heck out of Anton Chekhov for 8 months, I’d say he’s my biggest adult literary influence. Especially in the way of character building and dialogue. Want to improve your dialogue? READ PLAYS.

(Honestly I feel like the stuff I like to read isn’t what I usually write; Ray Bradbury’s work is a treasure and I savour ALL his words, but I sure as hell don’t write the way he does.)

19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

I outline a lot and they’re pretty detailed. The outline can definitely change by the way. It changes extremely frequently. Honestly it’s just a comfort/fallback for me to know that I have some sort of direction for the story.

20) do you write in long sit-down sessions or in little spurts?

I have a weekly session with IRL friends where we meet up at a cafe on Tuesday evenings and plunk the words out for roughly 2.5-3 hours. Technically Thursdays too but I’ve been skipping them recently (baaaaaad!) Since Mondays are my days off I sometimes escape then too.

Otherwise I will confess I just veg out at home after work.

21) what do you think when you read over your older work?

“This is clearly older work.”

22) are there any subjects that make you uncomfortable to write?

My fic will rarely go above T, and if it does it’ll probably be M for violence/tragedy rather than any sexual content. There’s plenty of it out there written by folk who can pull it off way better than me anyway!

23) any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?

Having studied theatre, including stage combat, particularly rapier/broadsword has been hella useful in writing Zelda fanfic. You know, the one with Link the famous swordsman with that famous sword. Oh, same with Abigail in “Beneath the Surface” too. I’m not googling when I describe their fights.

24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?

Not related to my work, but I now possess a fairly extensive knowledge of sea creatures from the creative writing workshops I teach at my job. For some reason the ages 6-8 classes are always ocean themed.

Did you know some sharks lay eggs that look like oblong sacs?? They’re like big leather tampons. That, and sea dragons can’t move independently. They just cling to seaweed and hope for the best, the poor tiny delicate things.

Not even talking about how much Zelda lore stuff I read up on now, wow

Yuri on Ice BD booklet translation (with Eiji Abiko & Junpei Tatenaka interview) - Volume 3

Had a busy weekend, but finally here is the full translation of the BD/DVD vol.3 booklet. The format is the same as usual. I wonder if Yuuri was ever able to enjoy a banquet (and remember it), lol.

EDIT: I changed the translation of the street food eaten by Guang-Hong in episode 6 after being notified that it’s actually the Chinese “jianbing”, which is a kind of crepe, and not “rice cracker” which is what “senbei” means in Japanese. Thank you very much @dragonaeve for the input!! In Japanese it’s written 煎餅, with the same exact kanji of "senbei” (rice cracker), and though in the anime it totally didn’t look like a senbei to me I failed to notice that it was a false friend... (And to think I even researched all the other Chinese food listed in the topics section to be sure..)

The booklet has 3 parts: 1) Character introduction for Minami-kun, Georgi and Leo. 2) “Topics”, in other words random curiosities. It includes an explanation of how Japanese qualification matches work. 3) Interview with the figure skating animators Eiji Abiko and Junpei Tatenaka. Some of the things they say might be a little difficult to understand if you don’t know a lot about how animation works, but if you google “inbetween animations” you will find more detailed information. Abiko: I also took part in the production of director Yamamoto’s previous work “ENDLESS NIGHT”, but I’ve always liked drawing looking at real life pictures, therefore when I was offered this job I thought that I had the necessary technical skills to do it. In the previous work there were some points I believed could have been done a different way, and I felt that in this new project we could try it out. Tatenaka: Before starting the job, I was suggested to try figure skating myself since the work was going to be about it, so I went to a skating class. Though it was just 4 days. The last time I skated was in elementary school, but (when I actually tried this time) I realized that I was going to draw something I knew nothing about. I could understand on which part of the blade you shift your weight when skating forward or backward, and that was really helpful later on. (When I watched the real life footage) after knowing that, I noticed that skaters really land on those points after a jump. They can land on the exact point even after spinning around at that speed! When I see videos where you can see them stress the landing to adjust the position so that they don’t miss the point I have goosebumps.

-Ideas to make performances look beautiful.-

T: What I realized when we started working is that scenes were very long, in the beginning. A: The director wanted to recreate a figure skating program and was determined to show the full sequence without shortening it. This means that all movements need to be connected, which takes a lot of work. T: Especially in the first part of the show, there were many sequences over 10 seconds long. You draw and draw and it never ends (LOL). A: To make skating performances look beautiful, I guess it was important to add a fair amount of inbetween animations (pictures added between key animations to supplement them). We gradually understood that using many key animations during slow movements wouldn’t make them look better unless they are very accurate. T: I had the idea to show the poses on screen for a longer time. (I was among the ones who went to Miyamoto-sensei’s choreography sessions, and) even poses that were really impressive when I saw them live only lasted an instant in the recorded footage, and it shifted to the next pose right away. If we recreated that in the anime, poses that were supposed to look impressive wouldn’t last, therefore I decided to use 2 extra key animations for some parts, so that the beautiful silhouette would stay in the viewers’ eyes. I like to draw “impressions”, and I always work thinking about what I want to show and communicate to the viewers. With figure skating I felt this all the more important. A: There are many things I found amazing about the scenes created by Tatenaka-san. Like Victor’s elegance in episode 1, isn’t that wonderful? When I watched it I was like “jeez, I need to get better too”, and he also has lots of ideas. Like JJ’s spin. I was determined to absolutely learn something from all that. T: Thank you. I like how Abiko-san draws all the characters properly. Yuuri always has an expression that fits his personality and the situation. And the spins are amazing! I couldn’t draw them satisfactorily and had to redraw them many times… I admit I was envious of Abiko-san’s soft touch that makes movements connect so smoothly. A: My favorite character is Otabek. I like how he is tough and cool. T: I like Giacometti. And JJ and Minami-kun. I think they are the ones I could figure out the best when drawing them. A: When the anime actually aired we had a huge response. Fans would write to me on Twitter, and every time I uploaded a picture I would get a lot of reactions. T: It was the first time that I had such a response, I was really surprised. I’m a fan of the baseball team Carp, and when I went to drink with my friends everyone knew “Yuri on Ice”. One person told me “a girl in my company watches it, she was praising it a lot”. It never happened to me so far!
