Reasons I despise Shadow and Bone

• Inej Ghafa in the books was an SA survivor and a girl who despite all that she went through, held hope close to her chest. Book Inej was so scared of the menagerie, she couldn't walk past it without the fear of being recaptured. She finally moved on from this fear when she choked Heleen at the Ice Court, stole her diamond choker and ran, calling her silks feathers. And finally believing that she was free after facing her fear, her abuser head on. So seeing the show Inej casually walk into the menagerie as well as merely shrugging upon hearing of Heleen's death this season, was not just extremely ooc but disrespectful and had zero depth.

• Kaz Brekker's disability was basically neglected this entire season and his cane treated like an accessory. Not only that they butchered the entire Kaz-Nikolai meeting in CK. Kaz would've immediately recognized Nikolai, like that was such a downgrade. Not to mention Nikolai threatening Kaz (and Jesper). Kaz wouldn't be threatened. Instead he'd make negotiations with Nikolai on his terms. Oh and most importantly, his entire backstory was rushed and played off like it was nothing serious. That intensity of two innocent small-town boys being tricked by an adult with agency and power, I couldn't feel it as much as I felt reading the books.

• Jesper Fahey's backstory is very emotional and beautiful. The memories with his mother and his coversations later on with his father, all lead up to him slowly accepting his grisha side more and embracing it. Embracing being a zowa. The show speed-ran through it and well, it lost its depth.

More importantly none of the backstory material makes much sense and lacks so much depth because there was nothing that lead to that development. The books, whatever transpires in SoC is what leads to and triggers their individual character developments. So any backstories stuffed in the show made no sense.

• Nina Zenik's bisexuality is completely erased by the show. Its like netflix is allergic to sapphics 😭

• Now Kanej! We got so much Kanej content we should be happy right? I agree. The scenes did give me a momentary high because those are some of my favorite parts of the books and its a blessing to be able to see them adapted on screen. Except, none of those scenes made sense, especially since season 1 barely hinted about some chemistry between the two and then season suddenly escalated all that slow burn into significant moments badly stashed into the show plot. I mean ofc we got the chapel scene and all but.. The whole wound patching-up scene was a pivotal moment in their relationship and it was completely downplayed in the show. And then there was also Kaz getting mad at Inej freeing some children from slavers? Like ofcourse even book Kaz would be slightly miffed but he wouldn't outright reprimand Inej and tell her she's off the team due to it, but thats what show Kaz did. And then after everything that happens, the sudden drop of “how will you have me” and the “without armor” dialogue completely did dirty to that moment. Like ofc she says “gloves on, fully clothed, head turned away so our lips never meet”. But in the books, Inej utters those words because of all the secrecy and lack of effort for pursuing a proper relationship between them. The “no armor” Inej says is addressed towards wanting him to be more open about himself (since Kaz knows basically everything about her, from her full name to how she was captured and ended up in Ketterdam) but Inej knows nothing about him, not even if Kaz Brekker is his real name. But the show made the “no armor” dialogue so bad. Its made Inej look so shallow as if she is merely speaking in terms of her physical wants.

Ohh and I did mention this in another post but everybody fucking knowing about Kaz's backstory? Everyone but Inej? The only person he actually tells in the books. Him even telling the fraction of stuff he tells Inej spoke volumes about their bond and how he trusted her enough to reveal this truth about himself. Show Kaz's past is revealed to Nina and Jesper casually walking in and listening??? WTF was that? And no Inej in thaf moment. Call it nitpicking but it was WRONG.

• Wesper has been reduced to the token gay couple of the show. Their sweet first encounter has been completely eradicated and they're turned into this typical trope of people who had a one night stand and accidentally met again. Their romance is so sexualised in the show, as many tend to do with queer ships (which is extremely disgusting imo). More importantly, we'll most likely never see the “no, not just girls” in that possible spin-off 🙂

• Ketterdam: the show has given no proper insight on Ketterdam. I bet most of the show only people don't understand much about the city and the gangs. I wonder if many even know whats a Dime Lion. And Pekka randomly having the stadwatch in cahoots with him was so shitty writing?

And these are just a few that i can remember right now. Also i don't want this post to get too long.

What is your favorite video game? (Or other type of game?)

Ok, so this is one I can never answer with just one definitive game, so I'll give you the list in no particular order!

Celeste: I mean, what can I say? It tells a deeply relatable story about overcoming your own mental mountain, and the absolute battle that can be on the way. The ups, the downs, the even further downs... then that stubborn climb back up. Plus, it's got really tight and well put together platforming mechanics, really good level design and art direction, and one of my favorite video game soundtracks ever.

Night in the Woods: This is the game that actually helped me get through a really, really bad depressive rut a few years back. You're put into the shoes of someone who struggles with a lot of aspects of life, and forced not only to confront yourself, but explore other peoples struggles at the same time, and the concept of growing up when you never really had the chance to be a kid. It fundamentally changed my perception on death. I'll never forget the line "When I die, I want it to hurt"

SLARPG: 4 gay ass furries go on an adventure, kiss, and learn deeply important lessons about themselves. It was kinda destined to be a game I loved. It's got a beautiful art style, a soundtrack I've listened to more times than I can count, and just a really lovable cast of characters. Plus, I'm real partial to notably sapphic furry women (and traditional JRPGs)

Terraria: I feel like being one of the only games I've sank over 1000 hours into makes this a pretty notable pick among my favs. Solid mechanics, one of my favorite games for mobility progression and tech, a good host of real fun boss fights, pretty much everything you could ask for! I do think there are times when the game just steps it the hell up and progression slows down a good bit (notably after plantera), but it's a seriously fun game to come back to and play every once in a while!

Undertale Yellow: Oh my GOSH, this game is too good for its own dang good!!! It's a fanmade prequel game to Undertale that tells the lovingly crafted stories of an all new cast of characters (bar like- two beasts who overlap), expands and explores Undertale's worldbuilding, has a REALLY GOOD soundtrack that's been stuck in my head for weeks, and just... more of what gave Undertale its magic. Having seen all three endings (and the neutral one being the most compelling somehow??), it's just amazing what the team behind the game managed to pull off. It's a passion project on a scale I've never really seen before.

Some honorable mentions: Beat Saber, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Armored Core 6, Ghost Giant, Enter the Gungeon, and Minecraft

finally returning home tomorrow and you know what that means: writing ungodly amounts of sapphic smut!!!! the real question is where to start 🤔 I have a couple Thoughts:

Shin watching over Sabine closely in the Eye of Sion as they travel through hyperspace, leading to them sleeping in the same bedroom. They end up making out, and then Sabine shows Shin how she likes to be fingered.

Sabine and Shin spar to kill time, they end up grinding together on the floor and Shin cums in her pants (Sabine is very smug).

Chapter 2 of Deliciously Sacrilegious (Shin gets a reward for being so good).

Ahsoka and Hera fucking after episode four, Hera is a little desperate to make sure Ahsoka is okay.

Finish the JediNiteArmor fic set after season 3 of The Mandalorian, where Ahsoka rides Bo-Katan on the throne and the Armorer watches

Shipping Raj x Wayne is somehow homophobic because Raj is in a canon gay relationship. Polyamory is a thing, and somehow I don't think homophobes would enjoy the idea of a fanon m/m ship somehow.

Honestly, any time people expect canon queer couples to be given special treatment in fandom it annoys the shit out of me. Someone will dislike the vibes of the ship. Its inevitable. Honestly, I'm surprised that someone wasn't me this time, since happy relationships like Rajbow aren't usually my jam.

Shut up about the love triangle. Shut up about Courtney's character derailment. Literally every ship was wronged by canon, we aren't fucking special. A vast majority of the ship tag shouldn't be bitching about canon.

...honestly, thats a hard one. I feel like hate is a strong word, but I don't understand the hype for Noah. (and any Noah ship that isn't Nowen or Noah x Emma.)

Like, sure. He's sarcastic. So what. That makes him a 5/10 at best. He never does anything but be sarcastic and then be mindlessly in love.

I don't hate him though.

The fart jokes are low hanging fruit, so I won't pick them.

I hate how everyone in gen 1 had to be coupled up. What relevance Izzy/Owen have on the season as a whole? Or Geoff/Bridgette? (I like them but point still stands.)

If you introduce a canon couple and get me invested in the romance, it has to actually go somewhere. Lyler was a plot device to get you to hate Heather. Duncney went through an entire arc. Gwent was amazing.

Why do no other ships bring that energy?

I love Samkota, but Sam was just a trophy husband for Dakota after her mutation. He's a passive participant in his own romance arc.

Gens 3 and 4 improve on this I think, but it still annoys me.

10.) worst part of fanon

this is incredibly petty and personal, but WHY IS CODY EVERYWHERE? He squicks me. So much. (honestly, the fact that he reminds me of a past experience when most creep characters don't proves that he feels like a real person. but no.) Why is half the fandom Cody. Can it not be?

16.) you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

I answered this before and I said Lesbian Emma. Now, I'm going to go with Gwortney. These two could barely sell and interesting friendship, and somehow you expect them to carry an entire romance plotline? Its the most bland of bland ships. If you want a Sapphic way to resolve the despised love triangle, Gweather is right there. They actually have chemistry.

It feels like they took all of Duncan's hard work of getting Courtney to relax and enjoy life, and made Gwen have the same effect on her when it doesn't make sense with the characterization. If anything, Courtney making Gwen be more serious makes sense.

(that being said, I'm glad you are having fun, and will reblog cute art.)

Other than the love triangle?

Heather's plot armor.

Owen had just as much, if not more plot armor. He makes the group sleep in the woods? Fuck it, Katie and Sadie get lost.

Single-handedly blows the cooking challenge? Uh... (Total Drama writers thinking up Bullshit) Beth and the Statue pisses everyone off more, somehow!

He betrays the guys alliance? This has no concequences for him.

At least Heather's plot armor didn't cause her to win a season.

It’s been a whole month since these two purple books were released into the world! I’m so happy I get to share my stories with you all and I’m immensely grateful to everyone who has read them! Also a huge thank you to everyone who has talked about these books, shared them with friends, or written a review! I know it isn't glamorous but really helps with discoverability and the cursed algorithm, so thank you! 📚💜

Being Ace is an anthology of asexual fiction by asexual authors. It has stories across all genres that reflect different asexual experiences. My story, Well Suited, follows a young aro/ace lady who must attend a coming out ball and her nonbinary aro/ace best friend who enchants a suit of armor to be her escort so she doesn't have to ask a real human being. It's about when the armor we build ourselves to challenge allonormativity becomes more of a cage than a shield and it's full of platonic pining and magic!

Lofty Mountains is an anthology of sapphic fantasy and science fiction centered on the element of air. Stories are set in the mountains, on skyships, and among a colony of megabees. My story, Don't Look Down, is about a gruff mountain dwarf with seasonal depression who is faced with a brighter future when a harpy falls to earth in her pumpkin patch. It's a cozy fantasy romance about family, gardening, and the light at the end of the tunnel.

Reads of 2023 Part II (so far)

i was sad i couldn't fit all the cover pictures in my Part I post without it going off the screen, so might as well split it into 2 posts! update as of 6/11!

thoughts/reviews:

Heaven Official's Blessing: Volume 1

It's happening! My friends have been deep in this author's works/fandom for a while now, I'm pretty late to the party... Well, I guess I've dabbled in some of the animated/live action content that's out there for the different series. Anyway, this was a fun read! There's something so lush about historical dramas that definitely comes through here. When you add in the bits of humor and adventure, the whole story is really refreshing.

Even though the translation is still a tiny bit unprofessional, it's clearer than other options, haha. I was able to get a way better sense of the world and characters on this attempt (I had a good time watching the animated show! But as my friend put it, the season moved lightning fast, so it brushed over a lot of things). I don't have any other real nitpicks, other than like... the odd sexism that pops up now and then. Lmao

I am ofc in love with the main characters... They invented love... They invented devotion... I'm also delighted by the pace of things! Their relationship has managed to be both teasingly slow (like, the gradual reveal of Hua Cheng's true identity) but also very satisfyingly forward (the escorting!! the painting!! the righteous anger!!). Excited to see where things go with them, and the rest of the cast! (3.5/5—would be a 4, but the translation still kind of hampers things.)

Naomi Vandoren's Forest of Light

The second art book I bought from this artist! Same thoughts as before; for a quick browse, this was a refreshing little collection. Her style is just nice and soothing, with some fun surrealism/dreamscape vibes thrown in.

I'm not sure I'll buy any more of these, since the book didn't add quite as much insight into the works as I was hoping. Plus some of the concepts don't really resonate with me/seem that well researched...

I think one of my favorite things included was this abstract work the artist did—she wrote that she started with random watercolor mark-making, and then turned that into a piece. Those were very cool explorations! (2.5/5)

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Last Olympian

Done!! With the series! (Unless... It looks like there might be some followups to the main story?) I understand why the darker tone got dialed up, and other than the excursion with Nico, why the story kind of broke from the wacky-roadtrip vibe of the others. It made sense, while still keeping some of the lighthearted narration from the others, which was nice. I think what I appreciate the most about the series is the fun it has with its world. (Side note—I watched the movie based on the first book recently, and I can only assume it didn't do well! Bc omg, it completely missed the mood of the books. Instead of lingering on the whimsy, they focused on... making Grover a very cringey stereotype? Nah.) (ALSO??? THEY CUT OUT MY DAUGHTER CLARISSE????? THE AUDACITY???????)

I think my biggest gripe with the book was the very weird way the Annabeth-Percy-Rachel dynamic was handled. Like, it just got kind of tiring after a bit, especially with the way Annabeth acted so uncharacteristically catty at times. Plus, like, Percy's off falling in love with Calypso after like 5 minutes, the girl is right that he's kind of flighty. Rachel's ending also felt, just... eh.

Other than that, I was very into the last book!! There were some really moving character moments, like, Nico struggling with his place in the story, everything we learned about Luke... AND THE BIGGEST MASTERSTROKE OF ALL!!! I have been waiting to scream about the sapphic Patrochilles take??? At the end??? Clarisse has two hands and she can hold both Chris's and Silena's. She was moved to go into battle!!!! For her!!!!! She defeated one of the most terrifying foes in NO ARMOR just with a SICK ASS SPEAR and I LOVE HER. Anyway no notes, except they better do Clarisse justice in the new adaptation or I will riot. (4/5)

Secrets of the Oak Woodlands

Ooo I'm out of practice doing these reviews... Mostly from a funny cocktail of outside factors slowing me down, but also because nonfiction can be such a slog for me to get through. Tragic, because I do want to learn more ecology, I'm just... bad at it. Anyway! Bought this book on a fun West Coast road trip, I think I picked this up in the Sequoia National Park gift shop? The writing itself is great, especially how it tackles some pretty complex concepts in a way that's approachable. The book doesn't feel like Baby's First Nature Guide, but it also doesn't completely lose me when it explores why coyote populations actually rise when they're hunted or why Oak Mistletoe is a keystone species.

Even though the watercolor illustrations in the book were lovely, I sort of wish the visuals could have focused more on the tougher scientific concepts being explained. Like, instead of the illustrated "anecdote" of a quail sitting sentry, it could have been good to have a cross-section diagram of an oak gall or something. I guess it's always hard to balance interest and clarity in scientific writing, though. Overall, I think this was a pretty good eco-starter book! I'm just a square peg trying to force myself into a round hole, reading these nonfiction books. (So... 3/5?)

The Dragon's Bride

Hoo boy... Hoo boy... Listened to this audiobook at the recommendation of my friend who's very into erotica/romances. Which was an adventure, for me! To start with the good points, I really like the founding premise of this whole world/story. Deals with demons walk that perfect line for me of intricate and taboo power dynamics—and at the same time, the author satisfied my inner hopeless romantic by making all the demons (that we've met so far, at least) morally viable! So yeah, the world building and characterization is really nice, tbh.

I think my two sticking points are the smut itself, and that I didn't find these particular protags very compelling... It's interesting comparing this to, say, an above-average smut fic. On the one hand this has better prose, but on the other hand the smut veered into being a little too flowery now and then... (not to say all the sex scenes were like that. Uh. There were some choice ones.) I also personally found the frequency of the sex scenes a little ridiculous, but for most people that's probably a positive! 😂 And then, when it comes to the main characters themselves, I think they were well-rounded and the dynamic itself made sense. The personalities just aren't the kind I normally latch onto, though—they're not my blorbos, you know? So, where I'd go into a smut fic already attached (and therefore more into the smut itself), these... I could take it or leave it, haha.

That said, this installment did pique my interest for others in the series. I'm curious about the one with the succubus........ And the one with Eve..................... Those tidbits seem more up my alley. :] Also, the voice acting was pretty fun, tbh. They got separate VAs for Briar and Sol, the two POV characters, and they knocked it out of the park (even/especially in the smut scenes)! (well, except for a very funny instance where the guy VA had to voice Briar's lines in a smut scene in a Sol POV chapter. Damn, did he try.) Might pick up one of the other installments... if they come out on audiobook! (3.5/5)

Legends & Lattes

Another recommendation!! From a different friend! Apparently this book is popular on booktok but since booktok sounds like a cesspool (not really—pls don't come for me) I'm glad I didn't know that going in. As a purveyor and avid consumer of slice-of-life fluff.......... I loved this!!! First of all, the main character is My Kind of Girl, and exactly the kind of character I want to see getting a happy ending. Then, the rest of cast provided so many different kinds of delight—the warm Found Family feeling of a grumpy kind father figure and an adorable little Creature baking actual cinnamon rolls and a prim but secretly dorky girlfriend and and and—so many greats! Even the antagonists were enjoyable, in their way.

Hmmm... for the negative part of my postive-negative-positive sandwich, I think I'd just echo what I've seen in a few other reviews—I could have done with a teensy bit more of the romance. Or I guess, more of the cuteness of it? All we really got was a little bit of lead-up and then a big get-together, but I feel like the romance scenes I like most (shy flirting, a tiny bit of pining) got sort of skipped over. It's not a huge negative! Especially for this story, which seemed like it hit exactly the balance the author intended. Yeah, I might have just had the epilogue cover the main ship being cute and in love, instead of the little righteous vengeance scene that we got.

So this was a perfect little comfort listen (audiobook again! with really nice acting done by the author himself!). I saw other people calling the first chapters slow, but tbh I loved the steady, hopeful mood that came from all that straightforward hard work happening and then paying off. A great story, if you go in with the right expectations! (4.5/5) (P.S.: also this article touches on some other L&L points that I think explain why it resonates so well in post-pandemic life) (P.P.S. now I'm trying to parse out why I liked this book so much more than House in the Cerulean Sea... I think part of it is that the cast felt more respected? Like, it was more than just The Most Special-est Pretty Boy and his Plucky Boyfriend Fix Fantasy Racism)

I am constantly thinking about how Edelgard just doesn’t seem designed to appeal to cishet men.

i hate to be the one to break this news to you op but just because a character doesn’t show skin like charlotte fire emblem doesn’t mean she isn’t designed to pander to men. she’s very much designed to pander to the (majority straight male) player base with her ‘uwu i only trust you professor omg did u see that rat? pls don’t look at my painting of you uwu’.

then there’s the whole edelgard c support in japanese where byleth makes reference to having come to her room for ‘yobi’ which is

there’s also the scene where byleth can make an unsolicited comment about edelgard’s breast size. which is… uhh… gross.

edelgard also has cipher cards that go from slightly fanserviceie to full on suggestive

and also her breast armor that my sister relentlessly mocked lol

and here’s a chart from the 3h subreddit about gender/sexually in regards to edelgard and edeleth. it’s extremely straight male. op might have just overlooked this since they probably don’t go on reddit and stay on tumblr (which unlike reddit is mostly female and has a high lgbt demographic).

Like the joke is that Bleagles is the Gay House, but everything about her feels deliberately non-hetero.

Edelgard is intense. She does not mince her words and she is constantly evaluating you. Though she tries, she has a difficult time understanding her peers initially. Early on, she talks about how she would sacrifice herself and others in the name of some greater good. She is terrible at communicating with her peers. She has to be seen as infallible. Her heart has been hardened for years and she assumes she has to stay that way. She also assumes everyone mourns the same way she does - which is why she (kind of insensitively) insists you move on when Jeralt dies. Because to her, grief has to be channeled towards action, or else you’ll get lost in it. This attitude is demonstrated time and time again as she presses on. It can make her come off as cold and unfeeling - but look closer, and she’s anything but.

don’t really have anything to say at this part. it is pretty on the nose though i would slightly disagree with that last sentence a bit. i wouldn’t say she’s as i feeling as hubert is but all of her talks of the war boil down to how she feels and never her victims.

Her story is ultimately about her realizing that to achieve her goals, she needs to let people in and allow herself to want things like cakes and tea parties and lazy days in peace.

????? what ????? her goals include imperialism, ethnic and religious targeting. her story is about having a set of beliefs and mowing down anybody who stands in her way. that has nothing to do with tea, friends, and lazy days. also am i supposed to be sad that she has to get up everyday and work? i do that and i didn’t start a war and only throw a pity party for myself

The game leaves the player guessing as to how involved the Flame Emperor was in each Part I event, makes you feel hurt by her betrayal, and leaves you with a choice: do you follow the orders of the woman who tried to make you a god without your consent, or a young girl with questionable morals about to throw the world into upheaval?

this isn’t an ideal situation but i think i’m going to stick with the woman who tried to make me a god since i’m not selfish and i know it’s not only my desires and life at stake here. plus the green hair slaps ngl

Choosing her of your own volition (not for completionist reasons) requires the basic ability to sympathize with a woman’s pain. It also requires the player to read beyond her unwavering will and dubious methods to get a sense of how deep that pain goes and how the theme of humanity relates to her differently in each route.

i’m not going to touch this since @nilsh13 made a post on it that i’ll link here. i agree with everything he said so to repeat it would be redundant.

The player must be able to see a young woman’s desperate resolve to change the world so it stops exploiting people and ruining lives. They must be able to accept the fact that women can make the same morally wrong and ambivalent decisions that complicated male characters get to make all the time and still be the one to root for.

literally the same reason i love rhea lol her goddess experiments are dubious at best but her reasons are the same you mentioned. i would say that i like this quality in edelgard too if her ending, while bloody, actually ended in a good outcome for fodlan.

This is not unique to LGBT+ people, but this population is likely to understand why Edelgard feels so strongly about why she has to change the system.

i understand wanting to change a system, i really do. like edelgard, i’m an opinionated bisexual woman (who’s also physically disabled) so yeah i get it. and change can be good but it can also be terrible. even if the church was the boogeyman edelgard treats it as she still replaces it with her own shit regime. so it’s the same circus just with a new conductor.

I don’t think “Edelgard gets undue criticism because she’s a woman” captures the full picture. An important aspect of her treatment by certain parts of the fandom is that she’s a radical woman.

or maybe she does some pretty fucked up shit and it goes unacknowledged in her own route. and yeah she’s radical but in all the worst ways.

Her hatred of the Church and the Crest system resonates way harder with people who have been hurt by institutions that are deeply engrained in our society.

and what about people who have been hurt by systems where their ‘merit’ didn’t measure up and they were left behind? what about people from nations that experienced imperialism?

Siding with her means siding against the Church - which, while different from real world religious institutions, still invokes language about “sin” and “punishment.

yeah the ‘sins’ and ‘punishments’ are used in relation to attempted murders which i think everybody can agree is a bad thing that needs to be condemned.

Choosing Edelgard will likely hit different if homophobic and transphobic Christians used that rhetoric against you.

it has literally nothing to do with ‘sins’ and ‘punishments’ in regards to being gay or trans. that’s you projecting. especially since the church has 2 canon gay characters and two coded ones.

like i can understand why having a church condemn you can be uncomfortable but i’m begging you to please look at the context of what’s happening.

I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that the reason F/F Edeleth is the more popular iteration of that ship because most people who would choose to S-support Edelgard are LGBT+ themselves. This is not a revelation. To anyone in the community, it’s fairly obvious.

edelgard gets to learn how to be human all while hunting those who don’t. and she doesn’t listen fo her friends. she doesn’t even trust them. she’s willing to talk to byleth but keep the people who’s been by her side for five years in the dark about everything. and yeah she gets to enjoy her new words since she’s on top. hate to be a commoner under her rule after she burned down my village in her war.

I love this character so much.

clearly. and i honestly don’t care if somebody likes her. i do as well even if my sometimes scathing words can make it seem otherwise.

because they never had the will to understand complicated women in the first place.

that’s big talk from somebody who implies that a gay pope is comparable to homophobic and transphobic irl religions and that leads an oppressive regime all because she uses the vague terms of sin and punishments that you have to gay power fantasy your way out of

Hey! Another female who uses He/Him pronouns! I thought I was the only one! I feel so happy right now. 😊

Technically, i use any pronouns (besides neopronouns, I have no problem with them I just don't vibe with them, ya know?) But He/Him is kinda my favorite, along with It/It's. I actually get a bit of hate over my usage of It/It's because it's considered "dehumanizing" which I understand, but isn't that a good reason to use them? "Wear it as armor, and it can never be used to hurt you".

I like the labels Lesbian and Sapphic, because women are *chef's kiss* but my preferred label is Omni. Both sexual and romantic. Which I define as "I can be attracted to people romantically but not sexually, or sexually but not romantically, or both, but with no real way to tell who I'll feel what about, regardless of gender but sometimes because of gender."

Sorry for kinda getting carried away there... I got excited to at least tell *someone* about myself... Sorry if I've bothered you.

My 40K OCs

Thanks to @rowscara 's encouragement, I've worked up the courage to share my 40k folk with y'all. So, without further ado: the Ashen Hunters. I'll slap down a read more here because HOLY shit.

THE ASHEN HUNTERS The Ashen Hunters are a small chaos warband formed sometime after the First Black Crusade. Though they lack the numbers to deploy as a full army, kill teams pulled from their ranks are deadly without equal. Their base of operations is a salvaged Thousands Suns Destroyer called the Shadow of Anubis.

ANKHARON Soldier, Scholar, Philosopher, Friend

Once of the World Eaters legion, Ankharon was famed for his self-control and presence of mind, even when the nails beat their tune the loudest. He was the official leader of the Ashen Hunters until the explosion of the Circatrix Maledictum, whereupon the butcher’s nails surged to a strength never before encountered, rendering him a frothing beast. He is currently sealed in an eternal battle-rage in a fortified teleportarium in the upper spinal bastions of the Shadow of Anubis, only brought to bear against the enemies of the Hunters when the need is most dire. It is only through the psykic talents of Zandros and Djehouti in concert that he can be brought to heel, and recalled back to his prison.

ZANDROS LUCARIAN, THE ASHEN JUDGE Real Sad Boi Hours

Though he holds no official title, Zandros Lucarian is considered by all aboard the Shadow of Anubis -except himself- to be the current leader of the Ashen Hunters. Under his reluctant command, the warband has been ceded purpose in the eons-long madness of the Long War. That purpose: to hunt down and kill Ahzek Ahriman. Zandros bears an intense hatred of his former captain, and voluntarily left the Thousand Sons after his gene-father refused to execute Ahriman for his crimes committed against the legion. Zandros was a sergeant under Ahriman, and all of his battle-brothers save Djehouti were scattered to the wind when the rubric was cast. He has never forgiven himself for the role he played in casting the Rubric, and to this day destroys any Rubricae he manages to capture intact. For respectively his laxity in punishing misdeeds, and for those misdeeds themselves, he has forgiven neither his father, nor his commander. He takes to the battlefield most often in Cataphractii terminator armor, bearing a hulking power sword and an archeotech tri-barreled rotary volkite Serpenta pistol, which he claims to have plucked from the corpse of an Alpha Legion champion.

DJEHOUTI SZERAHN Worryingly Co-Dependent

Djehouti’s unusually pale complexion makes him an oddity for one hailing from Tizca. He was handpicked by Magnus himself upon the primarch’s ascension to the Emperor’s ranks as recognition of his immense potential as a psyker. This potential was realized during his time under Zandros’ tutelage, and later as a battle-psyker of the legion during the Horus Heresy. But Djehouti foreswore the use of his talents after the Rubric of Ahriman was cast, unwilling to endanger his brothers with the same arrogance that had doomed his legion. To those without a psykic sense, this makes him almost indistinguishable from the very Rubricae that both he and his master staunchly refuse to utilize. But to those with the ability to touch minds with their fellows, his keen analytical mind and sheer strategic genius is evident as soon as he walks into the room. In battle, he wields a soulreaper autocannon, hefted by mastercrafted tizcan battleplate inlaid with Noctilith filligree designed to dampen his psykic impulses.

TORMEICA Chaos Milf

Tormeica is a priestess of Chaos Undivided, and serves as the one in charge of corralling the human chattel aboard the Shadow. She has a kind, motherly disposition that serves to cover a cruel streak that she saves for her enemies, as well as those who stand in the way of her schemes. Little is known about her past, save that she has history with the Imperial Cult, judging by the brand of 'heretic' seared into her back. She is an extremely potent psyker, perhaps stronger than Zandros. Neither has been foolish enough to instigate a fight. On the exceedingly rare occasion that calls for her to enter combat personally, the relies on her own pyrokinetic abilities and the support of hordes of chanting fanatics.

KALUS Artist of Lethality

Kalus originally belonged to the Emperor's Children. He joined the Ashen Hunters after being left without a place to call home following the destruction of the Canticle City at the hands of the fledgling Black Legion. In his spare time, Kalus is both a musician and a painter. He plays the harp, and is pretty damn good at it (though none of his fellows have ever heard another harp to compare it to). His paintings are made with sorcerous, warp-charged pigments that renders the pieces psychically resonant. In battle Kalus serves as one of the Hunters' foremost marksmen, as well as their most accomplished duelist.

MALECA ZRAINE Will Beat Your Ass

Maleca Zraine is one of the founding members of the Ashen Hunters. Originally of the Order of the Bloody Rose, she was banished into the eye of terror after she murdered her Sister Superior in a frenzied rage. Originally hoping to redeem herself with a death in battle against the heretics and heathens of the warp, she ran into Ankharon. After being soundly defeated, she was taken under his wing, and helped to reconcile her shattered faith in the Emperor with her unwanted service to Khorne. Now, she leads the Sisters Scorned, a group of Sororitas Maleficarum attached to the Ashen Hunters, hoping to find some peace in helping others down the path she walks. When she takes to the field, she uses a massive two-handed chainsword called Absolution, alongside a bolt pistol.

MIZI SEREBRYAKOV Sapphic Sniper

Mizi is the second member of the Scorned Sisters, sworn to tzeentch. She is insatiably curious, and joined the Order of the Sacred Scripture in the hopes of discovering more about the galaxy. To her disappointment, the Sororitas were less concerned with the conservation of knowledge and more concerned with the destruction of anything running contrary to the Ecclesiarchy's truth. She fled the order, willingly swearing herself to Tzeentch in exchange for the promise of truth. She has a massive crush on Maleca, but is too scared to act on it. Is a sniper without peer, most often taking to the battle using warp-wrought wings to strike from on high with her custom-made Las-Fusil.

Flower petals followed you each way you turned, a trail of mesmerizing early summer and sea winds. Kassandra found you addicting, so much so that she’d often bury herself in the crook of your shoulder just to breathe you in. On her, you smelled ages of war, men’s blood and fire, a scent which often warned others of her capabilities. To you, it was a scent which brought you home.

Her sweat was sweet, a pleasant odor which lured you in so easily; it’d surface after you found carnal bliss into each other’s arms. You’d breathe her in deeply as you caressed her body with fresh flowers, and washed away the smell of death and battle.

Wine and sweet honey lingered on your lips, but her mouth offered something else. That divine, particular taste which was Kassandra. You tasted everything that was her; the iron of fresh wounds whose pain you kissed away, the soft salt of the Aegean sea on her shoulders, on her throat… To her, you were a sweet drop of dew on an olive leaf, and to you, she was like olive bark, earthly and raw.

Her lips below were even more delectable. The softness of her folds and her delightful, womanly flavors… Fresh like a spring, raw like grass blades, pleasantly sweet and sour, and clean; it was like tasting life itself on the delicate skin of her vulva, and it never failed to leave you yearning for more.

To hear;

The distant rumble of a thunder storm, the soft wind picking up as heavy, dark clouds approached in warning, and then you heard that unexpected, powerful boom. That was how Kassandra spoke; imposing, with authority. People would cower when her anger erupted, and they’d still tremble even as the waves of her rage subsided.

To you, she was a songstress of war ballads and godly power. And when her heart would flutter, you’d hear her chirp a softer song, a voice so sensual and quiet, it hypnotized you. To her, you were an all-encompassing choir of kindness and sapphic verse, a temple where she’d hear her passion echo back to her. Together, you composed the most powerful of forbidden love songs. Her moans were a deep caress from your ears to your heart. Her whispers reverberated in your blood. Her laugh wound so tenderly revitalize your smile.

And when you touched her, saw her, smelled and tasted her, you did it all to hear that sensual tune…

Author Spotlight: J.L. Heeren

Today I’m spotlighting the author of Shadow Herald, a novel our book club also has a pleasure of reading this month. If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you will know that my favorite genre is fantasy so I’m happy to lean more about a sapphic fantasy author!

Writing Sapphic Genre Fiction

As a kid trawling my father’s big glass bookcase for books to read, my favorites were always the charmingly-designed fantasy stories — the ones with decorative flourishes and maps and sometimes even glossaries that gave deeper histories of worlds apart from our own. The Hobbit. Dragonlance. Forgotten Realms. Eragon. I fell in love with the sense of adventure, the magic, the desire to fight for a more just world — and also, the dragons. The dragons were very important.

But despite my overwhelming love of the genre, I didn’t take an interest in the romances inserted into many of these stories.

If a man and a woman so much as meaningfully crossed their gaze, you knew they were going to end up together by the end of the story, and you knew that anything she could do herself would be overshadowed by how she affected him. Something about that thoroughly disinterested me. It wasn’t even that I wasn’t a romantic — because I did find myself a little too enamored with the description of women being radiant whether they donned dresses or armor — but something else entirely. I didn’t know it at the time, but it was mostly because I was gay and the stories just weren’t.

Compulsory heterosexuality was everywhere! Even when I dipped my toes into more modern YA fantasy, it didn’t get much better.

(If anything, it got worse!)

It used to be that if you wanted a story with LGBTQ+ characters, you had a real hunt ahead of you. When I first realized I could seek out stories with characters like me (i.e. lesbian), I kept running into steamy romances and contemporary fiction, over and over and over again — which are fine genres, but not the ones that I craved.

It often felt like I had to choose between the stories I wanted to read, and the characters who would most resonate with my lived experiences.

But this story had a happy ending, because I live in a world with so much more variety now. Just look at all the titles listed on this blog alone! If you want niche LGBTQ+ fiction these days, it can be found with a clever search and a click of a button.

And if you’re determined enough, you can click around even more and learn how to make that niche fiction yourself. Now I have the honor of getting to make those charmingly-designed fantasy stories. Which means that I get to decide who gets a seat at the round table. There's satisfaction in writing (and designing!) genre fiction where, finally, characters can be LGBTQ+, can be disabled, can be women who aren’t dismissed, belittled, or posed “in the way” of the narrative.

Here’s to everyone else excited to enter an era of fiction where they can be seen. May the stories in your favorite genres be ever plentiful!
