I feel like sampling bias tumblr would like to know about how I saw my third “sampling bias” based post today and my immediate thought was “damn the new thing is sampling bias” followed by “what kind of (reactions to) polls have these people been seeing that they’re so up in arms about tumblr needing to understand sampling bias so bad” and then “haha. Experience bias, I need to post this.”

Edit: I saw yet another post about it and like. I always knew it was about the ‘is Tumblr gay’ polls, but I figured there HAD to be something more going on cause like. I swear I’ve seen more of the sampling bias posts than I have straight up “are you queer” polls. Maybe that’s recency bias tho. All sorts of bias.

If you ever find yourself looking at a bad take about literature and thinking "ugh, literary analysis is dead, Idiocracy was a documentary, literacy is in decline," remind yourself: none of the overly superficial approaches to stories you see on the internet are actually new. There have always been people who thought that trying to find symbolism in background details was for pretentious nerds, there have always been people who thought that there is no such thing as a story that isn't meant to be escapist and/or aspirational, there have always been people who demand that all stories be as clear about their morality as picture books for 5-year olds.

You just didn't see them before the internet put their inner thoughts right in your face.

Saw a poll a while back about which homestuck kid is most likely to be cancelled and it got me thinking. Obviously if we're going for cancelable characters almost every single one of the trolls is easily cancelable. So.

Nepeta and Kanaya are excluded for being unproblematic, murders nonwithstanding. Feferi and Aradia are included for being the dictator in training and the grim reaper, respectively. Tavros included for being cringe. I think the rest speak for themselves.

Actually that priest kink/monster fucker vent diagram brings up something.

That something being the “monster fucker” fantasy often has things to do with acceptance, control, and power. So does the priest kink.

from my research (the comments on my one post) this seems to be the circles we're working with because while I got dozens of "I'd never fuck a priest" comments not one person said that they had a priest kink and wouldn't also bang a monster.
