Chapter 2: The avian's nest
Previous chapter | Next
Ships planned: Prinxiety, Logicality, Dukeciet
Patton and Virgil are brothers in this one
Thanks @lovelivingmydreams for being my beta
Tumblr media
Virgil wasn't sick for too long. And after speaking with Emile he was much easier to deal with. He still hissed at anyone who got close to him though, even his brother. He hated being vulnerable and certainly didn't want to be treated like a baby.
« Being sick sucks,» he decided observing his brother's work from the height of the tree.
« Is that so? You must be glad it's over then,» Patton briefly looked up from his creation and quickly returned to gathering. It didn't look like much yet, but it began to look like a circle. Virgil huffed from his observation point.
« Are you making a nest?» he asked confused. « You think it's safe enough here?» he already knew the humans were going to freak out about it.
Avians made nests for two reasons: they either felt really safe or really stressed. In particularly bad situations avians made so-called panic nests. It was usually a couple of twigs and leaves, or, as they both did, from anything they found at hand (one time Patton made it out of cutlery). Panic nests looked rightfully awful and the word 'nest' mostly meant it was kinda circular pile of things.
What Patton was making looked nothing like that. It was going to be a proper nest about two meters wide judging by the lines Pat drew on the floor. This meant he wanted to make this his sleeping place. And he even did it in the open where everyone else could see.
« It's mostly so we can get more comfortable,» he blushed looking for the sticks he could use. His brother growled in disapproval, « You don't even have anything soft for it.»
« Yes, I do! I have moss!» he pointed at the floor, «And our wings will start to molt soon.»
« Eh. A so-so nest. Not sleeping in the mossy bed,» Virgil hopped on the ground and strolled past the construction.
« You sleep on the floor!» Patton argued.
« Yeah. And that's why I'm not making a bed out of it,» bit the black avian before disappearing behind the door.
Bathroom was Virgil's favorite place. It was warm and shiny. And oh boy did he love the shiny stuff! He made a mental note if ever going to build a nest he will steal that bigass mirror.
He started at it for a minute. There was a scar on his nose left from a muzzle, two more on his hands from the handcuffs and one on his neck from the electric collar. They looked kind of badass, but held dark memories. He looked skinny, but not as bad as before. A proper feeding could do wonders, and he hoped that he could get his muscles back too. He was sick of being weak.
He took off the hoodie, struggling a bit to get it off the wings. Pants went down next, and he plopped into the warm water face first. Wings, still dry, held him him on the surface of the water as he did little to no movement, drifting in the middle of the pool. He tilted his head just enough for him to breathe and relaxed.
It looked like a corpse. And it scared Roman half to death. He sprinted out of the door, through the hallway, past the confused Logan, past the not so confused Janus, into the enclosure and into the bathroom. But before he could pick the body up, it moved disturbed by the sound of splashing water. He did however drag the avian out of the water.
The rescued was not pleased with it and declared so with a strong bite. Roman however was reliеved, « You can't just drown yourself!»
Moody stuck his tongue out.
Roman frowned at his bratty patient. «You looked dead! Did you think that wouldn’t make us worried?»
The avian seemingly tasted the thought. He grabbed Roman by his shirt and walked back in the water, not even bothering to hide his naked body with his wings. He once again settled on the water's surface. His wings were now wet because of him jolting from Roman's touch, so he sank deeper than before. But his head was still afloat and Roman calmed down after he realized it was simply the way he relaxed. Moody squinted his eyes from the comfortable warmth and purred quietly.
« You're an absolute nightmare,» the rescuer huffed dramatically. He observed the avian a little intrigued. It's been a while since he was this close to him. Moody hadn't allowed himself to relax near anyone other than his brother and now he was swimming near him seemingly unbothered.
« Your wings look better,» Roman couldn't help himself but to comment. To his delight the avian in question blushed and started daggers at him. « What? It's true! We definitely need to thank our fawn friend for that thing he gave you,» he declared.
The actor pushed himself out of the water and sat on the edge. His clothes were soaking wet now, but it wasn't something that bothered him at the moment. He couldn't take his eyes of the beautiful feathers. Now looking at them he noticed how wobbly they looked. It wasn't just because of the water, they looked more messy when they should be. They were ungroomed. It would have been understandable if Moody was on his own, but he had a brother. Didn't they groom each other?
Now thinking about it he remembered what Logan told him. Right… Patton didn't have any claws, and his brother simply couldn't reach his back to do it on his own.
« Can I touch them?» he asked finally.
A hiss was the obvious answer.
« I can groom them, you know,» he tried to justify. There was a hesitation before the next hiss, a true master of pretending to not understand the language. Now Dark and Stormy moved further from Roman not quite interested in letting an untrusted creature near his wings. It made Roman frown.
He wasn't frustrated, no. He was angry actually, but not at the avian. Each time he tried to help, Virgil would hiss and try to get away. And it was all because of how he was treated before. It was infuriating! Who can do something bad to a creature this beautiful?! Or any other creature for that matter, not just the beautiful ones. It was so wrong and inhumane!
« I will make friends with you,» Roman half jokingly threatened, and had to go after another loud hiss.
Later, when Virgil finished his bath, he went out to now three people working on the nest. There was a couple of boxes with some soft materials like animal undercoat, feathers and cotton fiber. Patton was currently looking through the box with twigs, Logan helped making the base of the nest and Princey was mostly being a hype man and helping them both. Still in semi wet clothes.
« I told you I got soft stuff for it,» Virgil's brother pointed out smugly.
The black one huffed at that. « You mean THEY got it,» he argued.
Patton's wings shot up flustered, nearly hitting the nerd in the face. His darkwinged brother smirked and stuck out his tongue. There was a moment of silence between them until Patton stood up. Another moment. And then suddenly they both ran: Virgil for the trees and Patton after Virgil.
« Come here, you smart butt!» yelled Pat trying to catch his brother who climbed away as fast as he could giggling to himself.
Eventually they both reached the top and Virgil didn't have anywhere else to run. « No, stop! I'm sorry!» he laughed as his brother got him in a head lock and started to ruffle his hair.
The humans watched it with amazement. It was nice seeing the avians coming back to life. They probably didn't have much opportunities to have fun and banter like that in captivity. To think only two weeks prior they hadn't even talked in front of anyone.
« They are nice,» Patton said more quietly, releasing his brother from his hold. « Don't you want to talk to them?» he wondered.
Virgil took his time to respond, « What if they are still hiding something? Princey absolutely hates me. We're clearly doing something to upset them.»
« I don't think they are upset,» Patton replied. « Not at us at least. They give us nice food and we can move how much we want, they take care of us,» he brushed Virgil's hair.
Storm cloud sight and hugged his legs. « You can talk if you want to,» he relented. The smile on his brother's face lit up his soul.
« I'll ask them if we can go outside!» Patton suggested.
V shook his head at the helpless optimism. « Don't get your hopes up,» he warned, but Patton was already on his way down.
« Can we go outside?» this was the first official thing any of the avians said to their saviors in the human language. The conversation before it was short, but the older brother clearly allowed for it to happen. The whole team should have discussed this and given an answer later with all of the details figured out. But looking in those innocent blue eyes all Logan could say was « Yes, of course.»
Both birds got a little surprised at the answer.
« R-right now? Can we do that right now?» Patton's wings folded behind his back in anticipation. He tried to make himself presentable and obedient as if a little walk outside should be earned.
« If you won't fly away I don't see any reasons not letting you. Clear air is good for health, as people say. And our goal is your recovery.» Logan allowed and Prince nodded.
They should have discussed this with the team first. They should have predicted that something like this would happen.
Virgil tried to fly.
And he fell, of course. They couldn't have reacted in time. The avians were just walking and enjoying the grass and the trees, and the wind outside when the Black one suddenly started to climb higher with a surprising speed. His wings unfolded to their full size and a moment later he was in the air.
The landing was not as rough as it could have been if one of the humans just jumped of a tree. Wings still allowed for some gliding. But it was heartbreaking. Very heartbreaking. And Virgil showed just how much with the enraged scream that left him.
His brother slowly went up to him and hugged him.
They stayed like that for a while before going back into the enclosure.

ARC END: Roman's POV
[TW: this part features self hatred, if this triggers you, please skip this part, its not more important than your health.]
enjoy :] <3 (you can find all the other parts on #arcend on this blog)
Just me and my brother sitting alone in Logan's room. Why does he have to be my brother? All he wants to do is hurt me. And yet i still protect him. Why? Why am i like this? Ugh- i hate that im like this. Why cant i be like him? No thoughts, only silly jokes. I guess one twin is always going to be better... And even tho im the prince, its clear the duke is happier...
"love the new outfit, bro" Remus.. i really, really hope you're sarcastic. It looks awful, the color doesn't fit me. Im not evil...
"yeah.. i didn't really pick it myself, you know?" I should tell him he truth, i dont really have a reason to lie to him.. i think...
"why did it even happen? You're the prince guy" I KNOW, REMUS, I KNOW!! I WISH I KNEW WHY THOMAS' MIND HATES ME THE WAY IT DOES. I WISH I COULD BE WHAT THOMAS NEEDS ME TO BE, I WISH- ... I need to calm down.
"i dont know.. i hate it... Like- im supposed to be the good guy, the hero, THE KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR. But... But im not.." oh s**t.. im tearing up, i shouldn't have opened up, now he's gonna think im weak...
Footsteps..? Are Logan and Cronus back?
Oh its Virgil, thank g- Patton... Patton!!
"what is HE doing here?!" I need to know!
"Hes with us now" Virgil is.. protecting him? VIRGIL IS PROTECTING A TRAITOR.
"Yeah right!! He probably used his snake friend to poison your mind too. Re, get them OUT OF HERE." I NEED THEM OUT OF HERE.
Remus is finally doing as i say, he's going to them with his weapon in ha-
"cookies! And we can watch some movies, i-if you'd like" Patton has a plate of cookies.. thats not going to stop Remus- orrr it will, apparently.
"can we please calm down and just Hang out angst free for once? And its me saying this, you know its too much when the embodiment of angst tells you it's too angsty" Virgil kind of has a point.. i still dont trust Patton, but i guess for now its better than fighting when Logan and Cronus are still out.
"fine" i answer
Maybe watching a movie isnt that bad..

Which three sides from Sanders Sides would you choose to wreck with tickles, have an evenly two-sided tickle fight with, and tickle you into oblivion? And why?
ok in hindsight i misread this ask a bit akdhsj but it resulted in me adding a bit extra content so it's all good
3 Sides I'd wreck w tickles: VIRGIL first and foremost. i want to wreck that boy so so so badly. that is my biggest dream and is the reason i got into sasi tfic (which makes sense considering i got started via dani's fics). he would be so weak and so adorable and so embarrassed by it all i would wreck him. then also each of the creativitwins: Remus bc i wanna make the big bad scary crazy side giggle like a kid, and Roman bc i wanna make the big strong brave side... giggle like a kid KJDFHDJSDHFD
2 Sides I'd have an even tickle fight with: Patton for one, bc he'd be such a silly ler and would be so freaking good at it, and he's cute and soft and would be very ticklish and have a very cute laugh. Janus for a similar reason as the twins, bc i wanna make him lose it in a very out-of-character way, but also i think his attitude as a ler would be particularly enjoyable for me.
1 Side I'd have wreck me: Logan tbh. i just think, if he were being v stoic about the whole thing, it would actually absolutely get me. of course the stoicness mixed in w playfulness is important too, and i think he would get into the whole vibe of it. sorry this is so weirdly worded im just thinking abt it now and i like it JDFHDJS

What Dreams Are For
Chapter Six: Back To Normal?
Masterpost | First | Previous | Next | Ao3
Story Summary: Dreams are weird. Especially when you’re metaphysical. There is a distinction between your own dreams and that of your whole. Even though Roman doesn’t know at first that he’s trapped in a dream, he does know that something is wrong upon waking in an unfamiliar room. He thinks he’s in the Imagination but can’t say for sure. Just what has he gotten caught up in?
Cast as the evil Prince and forced to act out the twisted storyline of Thomas’ dream, Roman, with help from Patton and Virgil, needs to figure out what is happening while constricted by what his hateful character would do and say which is not at all pleasant.
We dream for a reason. And as much as Roman likes to be the center of attention, this dream isn’t about him. Someone else is crying out for help.
Content Warnings: None
~~*~~
Roman wakes up groggy. While he is a morning person, he tends to need around a minute to fully wake up. So he keeps still in his bed, staring at the canopy above him and just letting his thoughts wander.
What was on his schedule today? More meetings probably.
At least he had managed to talk to Patton and Virgil yesterday about his encounter with Logan. He still feels nauseous just thinking about it. It was awful on every level. The other two had been equally horrified by his recounting of events. Patton had hugged him after for a long time while Virgil had stayed quiet. They all needed time to process, so they had agreed to meet up again in the morning.
So soon, he presumes.
A servant should show up at any moment, they always do in the mornings. Until they force him out of bed, Roman decides to watch the slow sway of the canopy in the light breeze that always blows through his room. He had created that a few years back and it helps him sleep better.
Wait.
His room in the castle doesn’t have a convenient breeze.
And the bed there doesn’t have a canopy either.
His room in the mindscape does.
Roman sits up quickly and looks around.
There’s his fainting couch. And his vanity. And his star thingies. And the portal to the Imagination.
He’s back home!
Had it all been just a dream? He’s no stranger to vivid dreams, but this one…
Oh well, he shouldn’t think about it too hard. It’s over now and he should get out of bed and greet another day with enthusiasm, so that Thomas too can feel rejuvenated.
Roman gets dressed quickly, and then hurries downstairs to the kitchen, eager to leave the dream behind him.
As he enters the kitchen, he finds he’s not the first one to arrive. Patton is already there, a cup of tea in his hands that he’s staring at intently.
“Good morning, padre!” he greets cheerfully, and grabs an apple. A healthy start to the day will keep his energy up, as Logan once said.
“Mornin’,” Patton responds quietly. Roman’s hand freezes halfway through bringing the apple to his mouth. It was very unusual for the other to be so solemn in the morning.
“Something wrong?” he asks, placing the apple aside to give the other his full attention. Patton looks up. His eyes widen as he sees Roman, as if he only now realized someone else was in the room.
“Nothing, kiddo! Just hadn’t had enough sleep!” He tries to smile reassuringly but Roman sees past his weak attempt.
“I may not be as good at detecting lies as the Bananaconda, but I can tell that you’re fibbing, padre. I can understand if you don’t want to talk about it, but you know what we said about repression. If not with me, find someone to talk to?”
Patton visibly deflates and he sighs.
“It really isn’t something serious, kiddo. I just had a weird dream that I can’t quite shake off, that’s all.”
Roman suddenly has a very bad feeling.
“A dream? What about?”
“Uhm… Well, it was more a nightmare I guess,” Patton confesses, shuffling nervously. “We—you, Virgil and I, I mean—were trapped in a castle and we had to act all mean to the staff and then you got in a fight with both Remus and Logan and it was horrible.”
Oh.
Oh no.
“And I was the prince, Virgil the captain of the knights and you’re the royal advisor?”
Patton stares at him with wide eyes.
“How did you know?” he asks in a small voice.
“I don’t think it was just a dream, padre.”
Before either of them could say more, they feel a tug.
Thomas is summoning them.
They exchange a quick glance before sinking out.
Only to find Thomas pacing in front of his couch and Virgil already with him, sitting on the stairs with his eyeshadow a deep black. Thomas sighs in relief as he sees them.
“Oh, thank goodness, you’re here.”
“What’s going on, kiddo?” Patton ask, laughing nervously as his eyes jump between Thomas and Virgil who is now biting at his nails. “This is a very early time to summon us.”
“Well,” Thomas begins as he stops his pacing but instead starts shuffling in place, “since I’ve gotten up this morning, I felt that something was… off. I couldn’t really place what, but I thought maybe talking with Virgil about it would help, you know, anxiety and all that.” He waves his hand around. He can’t seem to keep still this morning. “And when I did, Virgil seemed to be in more distress than usual, so I got sidetracked and tried to get him to tell me what was going on. Turns out the two things might be connected.”
“Connected how exactly?” Roman questions.
“I asked him to summon Logan. It didn’t work,” Virgil says before Thomas can continue. “Janus and Remus aren’t responding either.”
“Apparently, Virgil was trying to get into Logan’s room before I called him and that didn’t work either.”
“I tried the door and sinking in. Was blocked both times.”
“What— What does that mean?” Patton asks, his voice shaky. Scared.
“I don’t know,” Thomas admits. “The only time one of you hasn’t responded to my summons at all was when Virgil ducked out, but… This is different, I think. I can still feel their influences. I can still think logically, I think I can still lie, I mean, um… Patton’s hair is green! Yeah, still able to lie… And considering Remus… No need to go into detail but I do know he’s still there.”
“Then where are they?”
“I have no—”
“I might know.”
All eyes snap to Virgil.
“Wha— how?” Roman asks.
“There’s this… thing that kept happening to Remus when we were younger,” Virgil begins, looking uncomfortable with all the attention. “Sometimes he’d just disappear for hours or days on end and Janus and I couldn’t reach him. His room was blocked off and summoning didn’t work either.”
“So exactly like our situation right now?” Thomas asks.
Virgil nods, “Yeah. I had no idea what was happening the first few times. Janus would just leave and get back sometime later with Remus in tow. When I finally asked what was happening, Janus said that Remus sometimes got trapped in the Imagination. Janus theorized that since Remus’ core function had to do with unwanted ideas, the way he worked though issues was by forcibly being confronted by them in your dreams, Thomas, when your subconscious was in charge. Remus would get trapped in ‘stories’ and wasn’t able to leave until the issue was resolved.”
“That… sounds like it could fit,” Thomas hums thoughtfully.
“Then how do we ‘resolve’ the ‘story’?” Patton asks, careful and slow in choosing his words.
“I’m not really sure. Janus dealt with them alone, I was too paranoid about getting stuck myself that I couldn’t bring myself to go with him. But it only ever happened to Remus, I don’t know why it seems to be affecting both Janus and Logan this time too.”
“Sounds like Janus is the key to solving this, right?” Thomas wonders.
“Then our mission will be to find him first!” Roman declares. Virgil rolls his eyes but a fond smile dances around his lips.
“Wasn’t that the plan already?”
“Do you always have to rain on my parade?!”
“Kiddos, please calm down…”
“Wait, wait, wait, what do you mean that was the plan already? We just figured the situation out, how do you already have a plan?” Thomas interjects and his sides go quiet immediately. They all avoid looking at him directly and he gets a feeling that he’s not gonna like their explanation.
“You know how I just said that Remus would get stuck in your dreams?” Virgil eventually says.
“Yeah?”
“Well, there you go.”
“That didn’t tell me anything, Verge!”
“He means,” Roman interjects since Virgil seemed entirely unwilling to say more, “is that we were in that dream, too. We had a part to play in that ‘story’ but it seems we woke up alongside you, and the others didn’t.”
“But you’re certain they’re still in there? How does that make sense, I am not dreaming right now!”
“I have no idea how exactly it works either, but Remus was definitely gone over multiple days too sometimes. I asked him if he remembered the times between nights and he said not in the moment but afterwards he could remember being trapped in a black void or something,” Virgil shrugs, biting at his nails.
“So we can’t get to them now?”
“I don’t think so, Pat.”
“Then there’s nothing for us to do but wait until nightfall!” Roman proclaims. “It would be best for us to save our strength and have a relaxing day.” He walks over to Virgil as he talks and gently tugs his fingers away from his mouth. “We’ll figure it out,” he whispers reassuringly. Virgil just nods, refusing to meet his eyes.
“Then how about you two go and have some fun and I’ll keep an eye on my kiddo here,” Patton offers. Thomas furrows his brows in response.
“Why do you need to keep an eye on me?”
“Well,” Patton shuffles uncomfortably, “we don’t really know what the absence of the others means for you. I know you feel mostly normal, and their influence isn’t entirely gone, but I would feel better if I could make sure that nothing more happens. And as much as I don’t like doing this, maybe we’ll have to cancel some plans. Not just today but tomorrow, too.”
“I… guess I see your point,” Thomas sighs, letting himself fall into the couch, already exhausted. “Let’s look at my schedule together and see what we can cut. Do you think me calling in sick is technically lying? I mean, I’m not physically sick but I’m definitely compromised on some level.”
Patton smiles weakly and sits down next to him.
“Let’s first see if we need to come up with any excuses in the first place.”
“Yeah, yeah, right. Verge, Roman? You two okay?”
“As okay as can be in this situation, Thomathy! Don’t pay us any mind, I’ll make sure our darling Emo doesn’t freak out on us to much.” Roman squeezes Virgil’s shoulder gently, who in turn grumbles and lightly elbows him in the side.
“I’m gonna destroy you in Mario Kart for that one.”
“Oh, you are so on.”
They sink out and Patton’s gaze is locked on the spot they just stood for a few moments. He can tell that they are still on edge but with nothing they can do but wait, he guesses distractions are the next best thing. He lets out a soft sigh before sliding closer to Thomas to look at his phone and go over his plans for the next few days.
They’ll be fine.
He’ll just have to tell himself that until he believes it.
Fake it till you make it, right?

Honestly, the one I feel the worst for in the superhero au is Roman
Cause, like, one of his closest friends is clearly suffering and he can't do anything (to the point where he almost loses that friend to retirement), and then his brother starts acting weird too. And then he keeps being left alone on crucial missions, only to find out that the two people he cares most for in the world are stuck in a really fucked up hypno cycle they can't control. And he doesn't know how to stop any of it
No wonder he starts getting more intense with Virgil, he's going through a lot at the moment
True, true. But like he's kind of the Superman guy so if any of then are able to cope solo, it's him.
And like, to me, Roman is Also being distracted a bit too but he's the one more in control of his situation.
Him and Virgil is like. Roman seeing this kind of unwilling criminal/goon/henchman and going, "hm. I can fix him. With pleasure conditioning." Maybe this idea gets implanted in him somehow or he's just influenced, or him and Virgil end uo hooking up (maybe due to a Poison Ivy type aphrodisiac?) And Roman realises Virgil is so receptive to him/being fucked by him.
So Roman ends up kind of being the source of his own corruption because he's powerful and a source for good so of course he knows what's best for Virgil! Of course what he's doing is right! And he may get angry when he finds out what's been done to his friends/family but like. He can't point fingers. Siren would point this out to him with glee.
And the idea of him approaching Patton again like okay hey something is Up, my guy, what's wrong with you. Patton tells him what's up, how he's exhausted by it, how used he feels and ashamed he's into it etc. And it leads to the two of them tenderly fucking. As friends.
But yeah. He would probably take it out on Virgil. And he may even try to go for Siren or Stalker (Logan) but I think Logan would... 'reason' with him (they rationalise their actions the same way) and Siren would just. Also trance him. Roman would also be weak to magic, I think.
And really, Janus could push Roman's urges further. Don't worry, you're right. WE'RE right. We're on the same side in this terms of pleasure. Don't worry about what's happening to your teammates, they want it. Etc.
Im not saying Roman's turning evil. He still has a drive to do civic good and he's able to stop threats and be a good hero. But his personal morals have twisted.
...If you've come to this au expecting the good guys to super-angst their way out of it and then win in the end.... then this may not be for you. Just a heads up. And tbh the villains may get pulled the other direction where they stop doing as much crime / start doing the prevention themselves bc they see what good/service the heroes Were actually providing. Yknow. Equilibrium or whatever.

TWs:
-Smoking/cigarette addiction
-Domestic violence
-Verbal abuse
-Stockholm Syndrome
Characters:
-Virgil Foster: 17 years old, the oldest child in the Foster family. Is Patton’s biological son. Fiercely protective over his little brothers and his papa, Logan. The instigator. Picks fights and does whatever he can to direct all negative attention towards him versus anybody else. Has a smoking addiction, but refuses to admit it.
Tumblr media
-Logan Foster: 35 years old. The papa of Virgil, Roman, and Remus. Weak and emotionally exhausted, his solution to his situation is to try and take as much of the brunt as possible. Has lost hope for any kind of escape, but does all he can to make his kids feel happy and safe in an unhappy and unsafe environment. Kind and gentle with his kids, though very protective over them.
Tumblr media
-Patton Foster: 52 years old. A cruel father to Roman, Remus, and Virgil especially, who is his biologically. Has a terrible drinking habit, and flies into drunk rages when things do not go his way. Loves to put down his children, sees them as parasites rather than kids. Heavily favors Roman, and makes this known. Gaslights and threatens his family into keeping quiet.
Tumblr media
-Roman Foster: 9 years old, a young boy who has a seemingly unlimited amount of optimism at his disposal. The golden child, and the baby of the family, usually sheltered from the situation by the rest of his family. Bright and cheerful, with an impressive work ethic, he’s determined to help his family in any way he can. Not as oblivious as people assume. Unhealthily attached to his twin brother.
Tumblr media
-Remus Foster: 9 years old. Hauntingly mature for his age, with a serious and callous disposition. Does all he can to protect his brother from Patton, glad to keep things the way they are as long as Roman is safe and unharmed. The black sheep. Has trouble regulating emotions, tends to use physical violence such as biting and clawing to try and escape unsafe situations. Unhealthily attached to his twin brother.
Tumblr media
-Remy Stonewall: 38 years old. Logan’s older brother. Owns his own coffee shop downtown. Had a rocky, turbulent childhood, but grew up into a wise, kind man. Loves his family, though he doesn’t get to see them very often due to Patton’s control over them. Knows little about the situation, but tries to help with the problems that he does know are present, such as their poverty.
Tumblr media
-Emile Picani: 34 years old. Remy’s boyfriend, and the temporary child therapist of Roman and Remus. A quirky, but kind person, who loves cartoons and helping troubled children. A hopeless romantic.
Tumblr media
Plot:
One could compare the Foster household to a dollhouse. Pretty and perfect on the outside, but on the inside, controlled by one person. Patton was a dictator in his family. He controlled all the money, all the schedules, all the food, all the chores. When he wanted something from his husband or children, he got it, no questions asked. And if he didn’t? That was when punishment ensued.
The house was a miserable place for Logan, Roman, Virgil, and Remus. Logan, being Patton’s husband, has tried to escape many times, but it only resulted in worse and worse punishment, and taking it out on the children. So Logan stopped trying, and resigned himself to being Patton’s punching bag.
Virgil, being a teenager, has had enough of Patton’s treatment. He openly rebels and instigates in order to draw Patton’s attention away from Logan and the little twins. It gets him hurt, but by now, Virgil is used to it. For most of his childhood, after all, Patton was all he knew.
But soon, it all becomes too much. The twins are having a hard time hiding the bruises at school, and Virgil’s injuries get worse and worse, as does Logan’s. They decide that they need to run away from Patton. But where is there to go? Luckily, Logan’s brother Remy has a big house, and he’s always begging Logan to come visit. It all comes crashing down when Logan finally decides to tell Remy what’s been going on with Patton.

HI HELLO I MISSED INCORRECT QUOTES DAY SO IM THROWING IN SOME EXTRAS
Roman: Person of interest is almost too flattering.
Roman: Like if a cop knocked on my door and said “A man has been murdered in your building and you are a person of interest,” I’d be like, “oOh, moi?? do go on!!”
Logan: *gently taps table *
Roman: *taps back*
Patton: What are they doing?
Virgil: Morse code.
Logan: *aggressively taps table*
Roman: YOU TAKE THAT BACK
Patton: You kidnapped Janus? That’s illegal!
Roman: But, Patton, what’s more illegal? Briefly inconveniencing Janus, or him destroying Thomas’s mental health?
Patton: KIDNAPPING JANUS, ROMAN!
Logan: Patton, listen. No matter what I think of you right now, these guys are counting on you! You inspire them!
Patton: To kidnap people?!
Logan: To work together.
Patton: TO KIDNAP PEOPLE??
Virgil: Patton, we all agreed a half snake side is not a people.
Logan: You know not every problem can be solved with a sword.
Roman: That’s why I carry two swords.
Janus: YOU LYING CHEATING PIECE OF SHIT!!
Roman: OH YEAH??? YOU’RE THE ONE THAT THINKS HE CAN GET AWAY WITH EVERYTHING! WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!
Janus: I’M LEAVING YOU, AND I’M TAKING THE KIDS!
Virgil: *picking up the monopoly board* I think we’re gonna stop playing now.
Remus, writing in his diary with a glitter gel pen: Im losing my sense of humanity. Nothing matters. God is dead. There’s blood on my hands.
Janus: Standing next to sunflowers always makes me feel weak. Like, “look at this fucking flower. This flower is taller than me. This plant is winning and i’m losing.”
Virgil: Wow. You are NOT ready to hear about trees.
Virgil: What are you doing here?!
Remus: I could ask you the same question!
Virgil: This is my house, I live here.
Remus: I could ask you a different question.
Patton: I can be your partner for the next race.
Roman: Sorry, Patton. It's a sibling race.
Remus: Maybe there's a contest for lonely children after this.
Roman: It's only children, Remus. A lonely child is what you're gonna be when I sell you!
Patton: For self defense reasons, I'm going to pretend to be a burglar and you guys have to act wisely.
Remus, Virgil, & Janus: Okay.
Patton: If you don't want to die, give me all your money.
Remus: Bold of you to assume I have money.
Virgil: Bold of you to assume I don't want to die.
Janus: Bold of you to assume I can die.
Logan: The odds of this happening by coincidence are vanishingly small.
Patton: I would say infinitesimally.
Roman: And I'd say teenily-weenily. We all know words.
Remus: Remember, when burying a body, make sure to cover it with endangered plants so it’s illegal to dig up!
Janus: Make sure to follow me for more gardening tips!

Holiday Plans (Monstrous Roommates AU fic)
So the thing is: Fireworks go boom.
(on Ao3)
------
There were raised voices in the kitchen, which was surprising. Thomas rose up out of his doze and headed over, more or less sitting on the kitchen pass through. All four of his roommates were gathered around the table, which had lots of pieces of paper on it, and Logan’s laptop to one side.  The paper proved to be a map of the surrounding area, from the looks of things printed off Google and patched together.
“-this does of course, not include people who have just gotten them somewhere and will let them off whenever they please.”
“Yeah but those are quieter.” Virgil countered. Patton whined uncomfortably, leaning against Roman. Roman was perched on the counter, and kissed Patton’s neck in response.
Virgil glared down at the paper.
“We can’t do anything about those. So planning for them is out.”
“Barring weather conditions they’ll start here at eight forty five on the second, continuing here and here until ten at the latest.” He drew points on the map, and after a moment’s study, Virgil drew circles around them.
“Again, the weather’ll change it, but that’s about the range.”
Thomas moved past them, and brushed up against Patton and Roman, letting them know he was there with a chill.
“Hello Thomas.” Roman said brightly, but looking in the wrong direction.
“Over here.” Thomas corrected, pushing himself to become visible. “Sorry, went through you a little bit.”
“So that’s what that was.” Patton gave a weak smile.
“What’s going on?” Thomas asked. Over at the kitchen table, Logan and Virgil had changed pen colors, apparently, and were discussing the third.
“Fourth of July plans.” Roman explained.
“Ah, gonna find the best place to watch the fireworks?”
Before anyone could answer, there was a sharp echoing bang somewhere down the street. Patton jumped and whined, fingernails looking at little dark and thick where he was holding on to Roman’s arms.
There was a pause, then another bang. Outside there was a flash of light.
“... firework.” Logan said after a moment. “Not gun.”
“You’re sure?” Virgil asked. Logan nodded.  Now that he was looking, Logan looked a little strained as well, and Virgil was chewing on the cord to his hoodie.
“Not quite.” Roman smiled at Thomas. “My beloveds do not care for fireworks. Logan is bothered by the lights, Patton is bothered by the sound, and Virgil hates both of them. Our last home was in the city, and the fireworks usually were set off at the edges, or more lost to the city sounds.”
“And assholes who shot ‘em off early got caught by the police. All cops may be bastards, but at least they knew a fire hazard when they saw it.” Virgil said grumpily.
“We weren’t quite prepared for how… enthusiastic the area was last year.” Logan explained. “This year, I have made some charts, and Virgil is helping me estimate how far the sound will carry.” He frowned down at his map. “We’re in an overlap for no less than three displays- and four on the fourth itself, oddly enough.”
“So I’m guessing no barbeque?” Thomas joked.
“We will probably be leaving tomorrow morning.” Roman confirmed. “I quite like fireworks, but I wouldn’t want to leave them alone.”
“You don’t have to.” Patton mumbled. “You could stay and have a blast.” he gave a weak smile.
“Thank you, no.” He kissed the top of Patton’s head. “If I want to see fireworks, I’ll take a trip down to Disney.”
“Disney.” Virgil and Logan groaned together, and Virgil made another mark on the map, down at the edge.
“I never thought it was an option.” Patton told Thomas. “When I was younger I just had to put up with it, because no one else seemed to have a problem.”
“If we can’t find a good place, it’s going to be noise canceling headphones and a lan party this year.” Virgil grumbled. “I mean, fun, but I’d rather not be forced into it. But we don’t want to go too far, and we need someplace to stay. So it’s tricky.” he sighed. “I remember I liked the fireworks when I was a kid, but now it’s just too bright and loud.”
Logan reached out and patted Virgil’s shoulder, staring down at the map.
“Why don’t you guys go somewhere else entirely?”
“Well, I’m still concerned about the epidemic, personally.” Logan pointed out. “Of the four of us, I am the most likely to contract a disease. Beyond that…” he shook his head. “It’s not as if we can travel far outside the United States in any good time. So anywhere we went we would be faced with the same problem. I think preparation like this is as good as it’s going to get.”
“Last year of highschool, Logan and I went camping. We hiked for miles out into the wilderness.” Patton offered.
“The stars were lovely.” Logan remembered.
“Yeah, but you were so sore you could hardly walk back.” Patton gave a whine of concern.
“We perhaps pushed too hard.”
“It took us twice as long to get back.” Patton admitted. “We ran out of food and I had to hunt. So even if we were near a big enough park, I don’t know if I’d wanna risk it.”
“I should hope I’m in better shape now, with all the effort I put into physical therapy.” Logan huffed. “But I suppose it’s better not to take that risk.”
“I mean, I could probably carry you back, but I’m not a huge fan of camping in the first place.” Virgil said with a grimace.
“It sounds like you need an off highway motel. Most of those are further away from towns.” Thomas suggested. “If you had more time, you might be able to find like an island rental in the keys.”
“I vote that!” Roman said excitedly. “No fireworks for you and a beach for me!”
“Yeah, sure.” Virgil said sarcastically. “You find one and I’ll put up with being on a boat.”
Roman pulled out his phone and started typing, and Virgil rolled his eyes, going back to his intense map-marking with Logan.
“Are you going to be okay Thomas?” Patton asked suddenly.
“Yeah, I’m used to being alone.” Thomas admitted, flickering a little bit. He didn’t like it, but really, being a ghost lent itself to being lonesome.  From the expression on Patton’s face he felt bad about it. Logan and Virgil argued quietly about locations and populations.
They were still at it a half an hour later, when Roman’s phone pinged and he looked at it.
“Ah-ha! I’ve got it!”
“What?” Virgil looked surprised.
“I put out some feelers- okay, Remy helped, and he and his mind-witch want to come as well.” Roman smiled brilliantly. “We have, should we want it, a private island for the week. With a nice little vacation home.” there was another ping. “Ah-” Roman’s shoulders shook as he laughed looking at the message. “Apparently it’s a summer home of someone Remy knows, and they go north for the Fourth. And it’s no longer optional. Remy says he’s going to show up at our door tomorrow. With a minivan.”
“If Remy’s willing to drive a minivan, it must be serious.” Virgil said with a straight face.
“Ah well.” Logan looked at the map. “It was a fun mental exercise.”   He began folding up the map, and putting the pens into a cup.
“We should go pack, I guess.” Virgil rubbed the back of his neck. “Sunscreen time.”
“I wish you could come with us.” Patton told Thomas.
“Yeah. Me too.” he smiled, and faded out.

Virgil Sanders x fem reader-My emo boy.
Yns POV:
Hum what a wonderful morning I thought as I stretched out in my and my boyfriend Virgil's shared bed. Oh now I have completely forgotten to introduce myself. I'm Yn and I'm Thomas shyness. And yes I am with Virgil and I love him so much it hurts and I understand him we help each other when it gets too much.
I decided to try to get out of bed but felt two very familiar arms around me that stopped me. I managed to turn around and smile when I saw Virgil's sleeping form. Then I snuggled into his warm body it is a little strange he is always so cold but when he is with me he is so warm. Virgil is really the best boyfriend I could have wished for, yes he may have a little problem sometimes but can you blame him he is Thomas' anxiety. But I love him one then and he is so good at working on his problems with me.
I love him and he loves me. I looked up at his sleeping face he is so cute when he sleeps. He may be extremely handsome when he is awake but when he sleeps then he is cute. I decided to start kissing him around his face and I could see him smiling but he had not really opened his eyes yet. Then I kissed him on the lips and then I felt him put his hand against my cheek and kissed me back. After our lips separately, he opened his eyes and with a smile.
Virgil: Good morning baby, have you slept well.
Omg that voice. Virgil's voice in the morning always makes me knee weak. I looked at him and smiled then I gave him another kiss then I answered.
Yn: Good morning Virgie I have slept wonderfully you?
Virgil: Ugh I do not like that nickname but yes I have also slept wonderfully.
I laughed at him and cuddled into him again I know he actually likes that nickname but only when I say it. This is the best I know that just lying and cuddling with Virgil I do not want to leave his side today. Wish we could just stay like this all day.
Knock Knock!!!
Hum Wondering who it might be?
Patton: Hello Kiddos good morning just wanted to tell you that breakfast is ready if you are interested.
I smiled when I heard it was Patton. Breakfast sounded really good right now I'm pretty hungry. I heard Virgil shout to Patton that we'll be down soon. But I do not want to leave the bed and I do not want to stop cuddling with Virgil.
Virgil: Baby what do you say if we just have a cozy day today and stay in bed and just cuddle and watch movies. Would you like it.
Yn: Yes please.
Virgils POV:
I laughed at her she is so heavenly sweet I kissed her on the forehead then I got up and picked up my sweater which was on the floor. I ignored switching to regular jeans because I'm just going to go down and get breakfast. Then I can just as easily go down in my pajama pants. When I turned around, I saw my wonderful girlfriend and saw that she looked a little sad. oh no what happens i did something stupid. I started to panic a bit.
Virgil: B_baby What is it have i done something.
Yn: Where are you going. Would we not stay in bed today.
Does she have to scare me so I smiled at her and giggled then I went to bed and took her in my arms. Then I kissed her and when we separated I told her.
Virgil: Yes, we're going to baby, but I'm just going to go down to the kitchen and get some breakfast. You're hungry, aren 't you?
She nodded to me and said a little yes then she gave me a kiss on the cheek and then lay down in bed again and hugged my pillow. So cute and I can not believe she's mine.
(Jumpskip in the kitchen)
Virgil: Morning.
Patton: Good morning Kiddo.
Logan: Morning.
Patton: But wait a minute where is Yn, she's okay. She's not sick, is she?
Virgil:Patton breathe YN is okay she's fine. We'll have a quiet day today.
Patton: Awwwww Soooooo Cuuuuuuuute!!!!!
Logan:Okay take it easy Patton it's okay Virgil but remember that when Roman and Thomas come home we'll make a new video.
Virgil: Okey.
(Jumpskip again sorry not sorry).
Virgil: Baby wake upp breakfast.
Yns POV:
Huh I must have fallen asleep. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, and when my eyes had adjusted to the light, and there I saw my nice boyfriend next to the bed with a tray of breakfast.
Virgil: Was it nice to have a little nap?
Yn: It was but there is someone missing next to me.
Virgils POV:
Oh god how cute she is I laughed at what she said then I put the tray aside then I took off my sweater and threw it on the floor. Then I lay in bed next to her side and said.
Virgil:I must make up for it then,
Come here baby.
Yns POV:
He smiled at me and kept his arms open for me. I giggled at him and crawled up to his arms then I gave him a kiss on the lips. Then I put my head on his chest and I felt him put his arms around me. Here I feel safe in his arms. I felt my eyes start to go out again but quickly opened them again because I just remembered the breakfast.
Yn: Virge what about breakfast?
Virgil:It can wait right now I just want to cuddle with my Baby.
I smiled at him and said nothing more I cuddled more into him. Just when I had fallen asleep, he whispered to me (I love you, thank you for being there). And yet I could only think of one thing. No, it's me to thank you for being there, I love you.
My Sweet Emo Boy.
And believe me that breakfast was completely forgotten.
Bonus_________________________________
Patton: Omg Logan come and check.
When Logan came, I held a finger and told him to be as quiet as he could. He looked at me strangely so I pointed into Virgil's room and told him to look towards the bed. Virgil held Yn in her arms and hid her face in her hair and they both lay asleep.
Patton:Come on you have to admit that the two of them are absolutely cute with each other.
Logan: Yes Patton I have to admit they are very sweet with each other.
I took out my mobile and took pictures of them, then we left the turtle doves alone. I have to show this picture later to Roman and Thomas.
The end.

a burning feeling
Chapter 4
Ao3
When Patton, a young-ish human, feels drawn to the mountains that house dragons, he doesn't know why he follows the feeling.
He definitely doesn't know why the dragons seem so... protective
Roman had been a knight for several years. He often travelled to and from villages to aid them with whatever problems troubled them. The town he visited now had quite a unique problem
They had settled near dragon-infested mountains, and the dragons had supposedly taken a young man. The young man was also a traveller, who had been watching the sunset and perhaps the stars before he had disappeared. The reason they believed it to have been the dragons, was that they had been acting strangely, hunting more often and seemingly watching the town
Roman had never fought a dragon alone before. It would be dangerous, and he didn’t have back up. He looked up at the mountain, a sense of determination overtaking him. First, he would attempt to look around the cave. Then he would figure out the best way to fight. He would probably need to enchant his sword; dragon scales were one of the toughest materials anyone knew about.
Roman climbed the mountain, hoping to be able to check the area before coming back to actually fight some dragons.
Pretty much immediately after entering the cave, one of the dragons ran up, growling and raising their wings. Roman gave a futile attempt to slice it. Unsurprisingly, his sword had bounced harmlessly off, as though it were a children’s toy and not a deadly weapon. Roman cursed under his breath, as the dragon stalked closer
He slowly backed away, trying to make it obvious that he was leaving. The dragon slowly stopped growling, lowering its wings. Roman snuck a glance behind the dragon. The cave system was deep, he noted, before completely leaving.
He asked around the town for anyone that would be able to enchant his sword, and perhaps his armour. It took a week and a half before he was ready to return to the cave.
When he got there, he was able to journey further into the cave before encountering a dragon. It was the same dragon that had threatened him before, though it was sleeping, its eyes closed. Roman slowly laid his sword on its neck, hoping to every deity he could think of that it wouldn’t wake up before he killed it.
Of course, his luck never granted him any mercy. A low growl stopped him, as its eyes opened. Roman stepped back, a thrill of fear coursing through his veins. Its purple scales turned to black, and it spread its wings once again, standing up to its towering height.
He slashed his sword, aiming for its side. It sliced through scales as if they were butter, and golden blood fell to the ground. It hissed. Roman had a few seconds to think what to do. He noticed its chest turn a glowing red, a sure sign that it was about to try to fry him. He rolled out of the way, narrowly dodging the attack. He shouted something at the beast
He attacked again, but it had seemingly learned its lesson, and dodged. Roman didn’t give it a chance to attack him, keeping it firmly on the defensive. He wouldn’t let it kill him before he rescued the poor young man that had been kidnapped.
His sword fell from his grasp, clattering across the floor, to behind the dragon. It stood between the enchanted object and him. Roman still had his dagger, though it would be extremely hard to attack a dragon with it. He could only remember two weak points of a dragon; the underside of their jaws, and the thin, papery part of a wing.
It would be hard to carry out the attack, with only a close range weapon and with dragons being so protective of their weak points. He made his decision in a split second as the dragon raised its wings once again, a threat as clear as day. Now, he was running through the cave with a dragon chasing him. He had the advantage of a head start, as it was too startled to follow him immediately
It was fast, though, and caught up to him quickly. He was about to attempt to run faster, but another dragon showed up in front of him. He shouted in surprise and slowed to a stop, looking between both dragons. The second one was the biggest, growling ferociously, somehow even more menacing than dragon one. He looked at them and down at the dagger in his hands
Surprisingly, and suspiciously neither dragon was preparing a fire attack. He looked behind the blue dragon and could see more tunnels in the cave. In another half-second decision, he sliced a little bit of the blue dragons wing, causing it to immediately retract the appendage and leave a big enough space for Roman to run through
He didn’t get far enough in the cave to find the hostage before being dragged away. He did find a small-ish nest, with some sort of protective charm around it. He wondered if it was for baby dragons.
As he was dragged away, he started shouting at the dragons, mainly to distract himself from his imminent demise. He wondered why they weren’t immediately killing him, they certainly seemed angry enough, and Purple definitely seemed willing to torch him before they were too deep in the cave. Perhaps they had something of too much importance to risk it being caught up in the flames.
He was set down on solid ground near the cave’s entrance, while both dragons started glowing the same way they did before preparing a blaze of flames. He did what any sane person would do, and ran for his life. He would be of no use to people if he was burnt to a crisp.
He heard a deep growl, but no dragons followed him. A breathed a sigh of relief, and when he finally got back to the town he immediately went back to the inn he was staying in, only offering the tale to those who asked. He would be going back at some point
But maybe in a few weeks, when they wouldn’t expect it as much.
Logan was injured, now, and so was Virgil. But, they had succeeded in protecting their young. The sprite was crying quietly, after he had taken it out of the nest, and it practically latched itself to his claw. Logan thought that the sounds of the fighting might have startled it
Virgil was tending to Logan’s wing before either of them tended to any other wounds, the wing being the most severe. He would not be able to fly for another week or so. Virgil had some shallow cuts, and loose scales. The sprite didn’t like seeing the blood.
Logan gently nudged it, the way Virgil had done the last time the knight was there
“We’re fine, don’t worry” he reassured, to which Virgil clicked an agreement. The sprite made little sniffling noises, but eventually stopped crying.
Logan moved to treat Virgil’s wounds, and the sprite moved to curl up on the ground, seemingly tired. Logan wanted to take it back to the nest immediately and give it all the warmth and everything it desired, and deserved.
However, Virgil’s wounds took priority in this instance. The wounds would heal quickly, but Virgil had a stubborn glare on his face as he stared at the cave wall
“Is something wrong, Virgil?” He asked, though he already knew the answer
Virgil gave a nod, looking around the cave
“I just don’t get what humans have against us. We don’t bother them, we don’t do anything! But, here they go attacking us again. It’s a good thing that they didn’t hurt the little one, otherwise their little settlement would burn to the ground” Virgil was glaring ferociously at the wall behind Logan.
Logan nodded
“It’s certainly… annoying, to say the least,” he agreed, looking around at the messed up cave and the injuries he was tending to. Piles of precious things he and Virgil had collected were knocked over in the commotion, and things were in places they weren’t supposed to be
The little sprite let out a low whine, as though it was upset. Logan gently ran a claw through its hair
Once he was finished cleaning and addressing wounds, he carefully carried it over to the nest, leaving the protective charm over it. Only he and Virgil would be able to get it out. If the knight did come back, and if it did manage to get this far into the cave, it could not hurt the child.
For the next few days, everyone was even more on edge than they had been the first time the knight showed up. The sprite seemed upset that it couldn’t get itself out of the nest to play and otherwise wreak havoc, but it was a necessary precaution.
He and Virgil took turns sleeping near its nest, and took turns playing. Virgil did the hunting, with Logan’s new injury stopping him from doing it, but Logan prepared the food. The little one was so close to igniting, and so far all signs pointed to naturally blue fire.
While blue fire in nature usually meant that it was hotter than red fire, blue magical flames meant that they were naturally safe for most beings, though could be dangerous if the person demanded them to be. Logan hoped it learned quickly how to defend itself, with all the threats it would face
It was clingy for a while, after the knight. Logan let it be. Logan could no longer tuck it under the injured wing, though it could still tuck under the other. It was getting warmer.
Logan was almost ready to introduce it directly to fire. He would wait another day or so, until he was absolutely sure. Virgil took over him watching the sprite after a while, and Logan went into his section of the cave.
He tested out his wing, but still couldn’t extend it properly. He gave a growl, thinking about the knight. He hoped, for its own sake, that it wouldn’t return.

ao3: “orange slices” rating: T warnings: platonic drlamp, unsympathetic orange, mild violence genre: hurt/comfort description:  Virgil doesn't know how good he has it until that good is threatened by something he never saw coming. (day 6:  “When you have too much faith in something, it’s bound to hurt you. Too much faith in anything will suck you dry. In this way, all the world is a vampire.” — Poppy Z. Brite @tsshipmonth2020 )
Virgil looks at the ground, his ears ringing. His cheek burns from the imprint of Orange's hand.
"I thought you were different," he says, in the hushed quiet. "I-"
"Well," Orange drawls. His eyes are very red when Virgil looks up. "That was your first mistake, Virgil." He prowls closer, forcing Virgil to back up.
"You really thought we were friends?" Orange asks. His teeth are like needles in the light. "Me, friends with a faerie?" He laughs, short and sharp, and it hurts more than the slap ever could.
Virgil bumps into the wall and freezes, the chill of the brick penetrating his hoodie. His face still hurts, still stings from the force of the slap. Orange is just watching him. Orange has watched him plenty of times before. Virgil's never seen this look in his eyes before. He's seen joy and comfort and protectiveness. Never this predatory hunger, this sharp watchfulness.
"What are you going to do?" Virgil asks, and his voice quivers.
"I'm a vampire, Virgil," Orange says, stepping closer. "What do you think I'm going to do?" Virgil swallows hard. Never before has he cursed how young he is. How few his defenses are. He feels so small.
"Please don't," Virgil whispers. "Please- you- it couldn't have all been a lie-" Orange looks almost sympathetic at that, and for a moment, Virgil feels a brief surge of hope.
"It's just my nature, Virgil," Orange says. "No hard feelings." And he presses Virgil against the wall, fingers biting into the fluted contours of his shoulders, one rough hand tipping his head to the side. Virgil struggles, but it feels like he's in a dream. He can't find purchase, can't get away. His panic is bright and overwhelming, as he feels Orange's teeth scrape the delicate skin of his throat.
"Get away from him!" Patton shrieks, and it hits Orange like a physical blow. He drops Virgil, who crumples to the ground like a used tissue, and whirls, his fangs bared and eyes wild.
Virgil looks up shakily to see all of his friends- his real friends- even Thomas- He's human and shaking and terrified but there all the same, holding a wrench clutched in both hands.
"Lay a hand on him again and I'll tear it off," Roman says softly. His eyes are eldritch green. His twin nods in grim agreement. Virgil scoots away, along the wall, watching the confrontation with dazed eyes. A thin trickle of blood runs down the side of his neck. Janus spots it in an instant, and his face turns icy.
"Guys," Orange says, with a weak chuckle. He raises his hands placatingly. "It- it was just a joke, that's all, I wouldn't- come on, I wouldn't really, Virgil knows that, right?" He turns toward Virgil, who flinches back.
"Friends with a faerie?" Virgil repeats, his voice shaking. "It's just your nature, no hard feelings." He dips his fingers in the blood painting his skin, showing the red splotches to the others, a blatant admission of guilt.
"If I were you," Logan says idly. "I would run."
And that's about the time Virgil starts to cry.
Orange darts away, melding with the shadows, and Thomas's wrench clatters to the floor. In a moment, Virgil is surrounded, scooped up by Roman who tucks him against his chest as he encourages Logan to examine his throat.
"You'll heal just fine," Logan says. "He barely got you."
"Thank you," Virgil sniffles, his voice wobbly.
"You're our friend, Virge," Patton says, and his face is very warm and very old at the same time. It makes Virgil feel soft and mushy inside.
"Love you guys," Virgil says, exhaustion crashing over him. Roman seems to sense it because he adjusts his grip, keeping Virgil securely pressed against him.
"Sleep, Virgil," Janus murmurs. "We'll talk about this later."
Virgil's eyes droop closed as he feels Logan finish cleaning and dressing the vampire wound on his neck. The last thing he hears is Remus promising upon all that he holds dear that Orange will pay.
It makes him smile.

Janus, an hour ago, had been wrapped up in spider silk, tickled to tears.
Then, five minutes ago, Virgil told him to wait, before running off. Janus couldn't see, webbing over his eyes.
He couldn't scream for help, webbing over his mouth. He twisted back and forth, only getting more stuck.
He hears two pairs of footsteps. One was light, and slow, but the other was heavy, with a constant rhythm.
Logan's voice reverberates in his chest. "So this is him?" Janus wanted to scream, to kick him square in the chest. How dare he bring Logan into this. Patton was the best ler. Everyone know this. But maybe Logan's flat explanations worked on Janus a bit better than the playful teasing. Perhaps the slow, methodical tickling stuck around in the back of Janus's head for days. And maybe. Just maybe. Logan know too many of Janus's weaknesses. Patton was too kind, Remus too wild and unpredictable for any build up, Virgil too careful, and maybe Roman was too cute of a lee. Logan was... effective, impatient, brutal. A tape recorder clicks on. Oh no. Not the- "The subject so far is twisting against his restraints, opting to change his roll position rather than his pitch or yaw." Logan walks around him, merely observing. "It seems like Virgil's methods have built up anticipation, causing such movements." Janus whines. Logan scratches under his chin, resulting in light tickles. "It seems my observations have turned Janus's previous fears of being tickled, into something more akin to a desperate desire to be destroyed by deranged devious tickling." Janus whines, deep and needy. "So far, Janus's behavior is simple, and merely reation based. It seems my associate, Mr.Nightmare has done a nearly perfect job getting Janus into the correct headspace to be tickled." Janus pushes against the webbing, moving his hips up and down, before giving up, whining. He squeezes his hands as hard as he can. "And now Janus is attempting to change his pitch position. He looks similar to an inchworm. This is a sign to begin the tickling, the anticipation at a perfect level to make the tickling most effective."

I've said before how much I love the concept of the Faint Ones. Just so so cool and unique. But I'm curious about something; is there any situation where the other sides/thomas could potentially learn about them? If they gained enough strength to ascend from the bottom like was mentioned in the possble tyrant path Patton could have gone down. Would that lead to a higher awareness of their existence from the other sides? Things in the mindscape would certainly shift after that, but I'm doubting it would lead to a reveal like that.
From your fics it seemed to be hinted that the Others' awareness, minus Janus because he knows, he HAS to, might be more than the Core sides. Logan has his own "I know something is going on there but Janus is a being evasive" awareness. I don't think Roman would know anything about the Faint Ones, or that they exist. Perhaps Patton has an inkling, but doesn't pursue it. I can't imagine a scenario where Janus would let ANY of that information loose. I mean, he just wouldn't. No way.
BUT, since you are the one who came up with this fascinating concept, I'm curious as to your thoughts and hypothetically, if the other sides DID find out, how would that go?
Feel free to answer what you'd like, or not at all, I understand if you don't want to give certain details away since this is one of the somethings you seem to be buildling upon in your world of Sanders Sides fics and headcannons and what not. Or whatever other reason there may be! I hope you're day is going well! :)
Hi, dear! Oh, do not worry, I am always super happy to reply to all questions you have! They're always so interesting! And I am more than happy to talk about the Faint Ones, I would've never imagined you enjoyed this idea so much :D
And speaking of them... well, let's say that when I started writing this reply, I put down everything and stuff I had in might for a long time too and I was like: "ah yes, I really wanted to write a fanfic about this, but never got a thread... but hey, maybe if I put together this and this and that... hey, maybe I have a thread!"
And so, I found a thread. And that means I can write the sequel of A Canticle In Steps. And that means I wrote it. Yes, I wrote it the past week. Yes, it's done. Yes, it will be translated and posted soon.
So... well, thank you for giving me the inspiration to write a sequel that is not endlessly long, for allowing me to put on paper things I had in my mind only and for letting me enjoy the dark sides being a family. I am very weak for them as always, Your Honor.
All of this to say that there are some informations I can't divulge yet, so have fun with what I can say now :P
__________________________
Do the Core Sides know about the Faint Ones?
The Core Sides don't know about them. All they know is that there are some dangers in the Unconscious (which is not false) and they know some things are more dangerous than others.
But that's all. They have no idea that there is something more dangerous than all those "minor" dangers.
When he was a child, Logan had the closest encounter a Core Side ever had with the Faint Ones. From his point of view, he heard some voices, which took control over him and pushed him to go down and reach them. However, thanks to Janus' intervention, he never came close enough to actually see the Faint Ones.
Still, the event left him a terrible impression: not in the form of a logical thought, but as a visceral feeling, the feeling of escaping from certain death.
Since it's not something he can logically explain, Logan doesn't talk to anyone about it. Still, every time he tries to reach the Unconscious, he subconsciously tries to always keep a safe distance.
He doesn't know what that "thing" was (and Janus never told him), so over the years, he came to the conclusion it was a big danger among all the dangers of the Unconscious. Maybe a particularly big one, but he doesn't know it's THE biggest one.
Or, at least, he doesn't know on a conscious level. But the mere fact his own body reacts by wanting to keep him at a safe distance, means that he realized (at least subconsciously) that what he met was a danger greater than any other.
__________________________
Do the Others know about the Faint Ones?
The Others live in the Unconscious, so they are aware the place is full of dangers - and they regularly fight them to subdue/keep them down.
Virgil doesn't know about the Faint Ones. He has always been more attracted by the Conscious and Janus prefers to keep his attention away from the depths of the mind.
According to my headcanon, Orange aka Anger doesn't know either. He knows Janus is very powerful and he suspects there should be a reason for having such a powerful Side in the mind. He also suspects the Unconscious hides bigger dangers and Janus keeps them away from said dangers. But nope, he never saw them. He just suspects.
While Remus is a different story, so you'll have to wait ;)
__________________________
Is there a way for the Sides to reach the Faint Ones?
Well, theoretically they are in one place, so if a Side wants to see them, all he has to do is to reach that place. And that means the Side has to go down into the Unconscious, past Orange's, Virgil's and Remus' room, deeper into the mind, until he reaches the Faint Ones.
But of course it's not easy to reach that place, because:
The mind itself is so big and layered to make it very, VERY hard to reach the Faint Ones down in the abyss
The Unconscious is full of dangers and obstacles that are not on the same levels as Faint Ones, but are strong enough to stop a Side
There is a guardian for a reason and the guardian knows everything that happens everywhere. And no, going past the guardian or defeating him is impossible: the mind made Janus stronger than all other Sides for a reason
__________________________
Is there a way for the Sides to know about the Faint Ones?
The only one who knows is Janus and Janus has no intention to talk about them with any other Side.
__________________________
What about Thomas?
Thomas is not aware on a conscious level. But subconsciously, he is. The mind is his own, after all.
However, this is one part of the mind it's much better he never becomes consciously aware of.
Why? Because if this happens, that means Thomas killed someone, had a mental breakdown or, in general, faced such a huge trauma, to break his mind.
__________________________
What if a Side knows about them?
Sadly, that wouldn't lead to any awareness of their existence, but rather to death.
Which kind of death? Well, I will give a hint in the fanfiction so, again, you have to wait. I'll just say that it's an extremely valid reason for the mind to have a powerful guardian :P

Rivals (?)
Summary: Logan has a crush on one of the most popular kids in the school, Roman, but fears his mortal enemy, Janus, will get in the way... and he's not entirely wrong...
Pairings: pre-romantic Logince, platonic Loceit (as in they hate each other)
Warnings: some low self esteem talk from Logan, a bit of unsimpathetic Janus towards Logan, food mention (not graphic). Lemme know if there's smth I missed.
Super late but deal with it, for @loginceweek2023 day 3 - competition.
I'm planning to have more chapters for this but they're more Loceit focused so I decided to post just the first part that focuses more on our fav prince and nerd^^
-------------------------
Logan and Janus had been rivals ever since Janus first arrived at the school.
They were both highly intelligent and well read people that did well in academic environments, such as school.
So it was that Logan and Janus were both the top students in their year with almost identical scores, they were both leading the debate team and math league of the school, won similar awards, and so on and so forth.
They were both incredibly competitive so the fact that they had so much in common didn't push them closer but rather did the opposite: they hated each other. They argued over everything, constantly keeping their guard up around each other to try and best each other for once, looking for a sign of weakness or something else they can use to bring the other down.
So it was that, when Logan started developing feelings for one of the most popular kids in school, he just knew Janus was going to try and make a move as well, if just to spite Logan.
While, yes, him and Janus had many similarities, they also had huge differences. For one, Janus was an incorrigible flirt and great at acting, while Logan… well, he was too straightforward and socially awkward for any of that.
So it happens that Janus was at the same theater group as Logan's crush, Roman, while Logan's only interaction with him during school was math class… which Roman spent most of his time doodling in his notebook rather than actually listening in.
Suffice to say, Logan was at a huge disadvantage in this particular competition between him and Janus, not to mention Logan can never imagine a scenario where Roman choses the boring nerd that he is over the smooth and slick Janus that shares at least one interest with him… he doesn't stand a chance!
"But you don't know that Janus is interested in him." Patton pointed out one time during lunch when Logan brought it up.
"That's not the point, he'll do it just to spite me, that's just how he is." Logan said, taking a bite from his sandwich grimly. "I should just give up… even if Janus was out of the picture there's no way 'mister popular' will be willing to go out with me of all people."
"Aww don't give up yet! You haven't even tried yet, he might surprise you!" Patton said encouragingly, smiling.
Logan opened his mouth to say something… when he saw Roman and Janus stepping inside the dining hall, laughing together, Janus smirking proudly.
Right… they just had theater together, they probably had so much fun together they lost track of time…
Logan sighed, taking another bite. "I highly doubt that…"
Then, suddenly, Roman locked eyes with Logan, making him freeze. He turned to Janus to say something, then, to Logan's shock, he moved towards him.
"Hey!" Roman smiled at him when he reached his and Patton's table.
"Um…hello." Logan managed to say somehow.
"Logan, right? We're together in math." Roman said, still smiling.
Logan just nodded. Roman knows who he is!
Roman bit his lip, looking back to where Janus was still standing. "Well I… wanted to ask you something…"
Logan frowned, confused, if Logan didn't know better this looked like Janus… no, that's impossible. He looked at Patton for support, but he just grinned at him.
"Uh… yes? What is it?" Logan asked, trying not to let his nervousness show.
Roman took a deep breath. "I was just wondering if… If you'd be interested in hanging out somewhere? Like a… Date?"
It took Logan a long moment to realize he actually heard that and his mind wasn't playing tricks on him.
He looked behind Roman towards Janus and they locked eyes, Janus looked almost… threatening? Did he want Logan to say yes?
"Logan?" Patton drew his attention and he realized in horror that Roman was standing there, obviously nervous and Logan kept him hanging all this time.
"Right, sorry, I just never thought you'll… nevermind, I would love that, Roman." He smiled at him and Roman slumped a little, looking relieved.
"Really? That's great um… here's my number and I'll… text you the details." He smiled shyly, handing him a piece of paper before running off.
Logan clutched the paper, looking at Patton's grinning face. "Ah… what just happened?"
"Roman just asked you out on a date!" Patton yelled in excitement, grabbing him by the shoulder and shaking him.
Logan smiled, so he didn't imagine it. "I… can't believe it-"
"Ahem."
They both turned to see Janus glaring at them. He turned his raging glare to Logan, poking him in the chest with an accusatory finger. "If you do the smallest thing to hurt him, I will end you, do you understand?"
Logan blinked, swallowing nervously. "I… don't understand, I thought you'll-"
"Take him from you?" Janus huffed, backing away a little. "Believe me I tried talking him out of asking you out but pretty boy here wouldn't listen." He rolled his eyes. "All those drawings of you he drew during math… almost made me vomit."
Logan frowned. "You and Roman are… friends?"
"Whatever! Just be careful with him alright?" Janus said and walked away.
----------------------------------------------------------
Logan tapped his fingers on the table, constantly checking his watch. Of course, he was so worried of being late that he arrived half an hour early and the wait was figurtavily killing him.
Finally, Roman showed up and sat down on the seat opposite of Logan, beaming. "Hey there! You're right on time, of course you are." He shook his head with a smile.
Logan flushed, the way he said it sounded like… he knew him… For exactly how long was Roman watching him?
"Actually I… I arrived here thirty minutes early, you never know how traffic is going to be so I went out early… just to be sure." Logan said awkwardly.
Roman blinked, and Logan worried he came out too uptight and serious. But then Roman chuckled, "yeah that does sound like you, so I'm assuming you had plenty of time to think of what you want to order then. You look really nice, by the way."
Logan had to look away, blushing deeply. "Um… thank you… you too."
While he waited for Roman, Logan tried to think about what to talk about with him. But now, as it turned out, Roman was fully capable of carrying the conversation all by himself, constantly jumping from one subject to another, Logan only managing to put in small replies and smiles here and there.
Logan didn't mind though, Roman's voice was.. pleasant, so much so that he was sure he could listen to it all day.
When their food arrived, Roman quieted down and they resumed eating in a relaxed silence.
"So… It came to my understanding that you and Janus are pretty close." Logan said after a while.
Roman stopped eating, swallowing and putting his fork down, looking a little uncomfortable.
"Oh, it's no problem, really, I was just wondering-"
"It's okay, I know you two don't get along but… well I really like you, and Janus' my best friend so… I was hoping for a small truce?" Roman looked at him hopefully.
Damn it Logan can't say no to that… "Did you ask Janus that, too?" He asked instead.
Roman nodded, chuckling a little. "Yeah, he was not happy, you should have seen his face. But he agreed eventually, though he said he'll, and I quote, 'still beat your score this year' "
Logan huffed. "I'd like to see him try, that slimy snake can keep dreaming-" he stopped himself. "...Sorry, reflex."
Roman sighed. "It's alright, so… that's a yes?"
Logan hesitated, Roman is amazing but… Janus? "Only when we're not at school?"
"Only then." Roman agreed. "Though if you'll try to be a bit nicer to each other at school that'd be awesome too but it's not a must."
Logan sighed, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Truce it is." He said bitterly, though the bitterness melted at the sight of Roman's grin.
"Yay! Oh I'm so happy I could kiss you now!"
Logan was sure his entire face turned red as he almost choked on his food. "Um…" he said in a stroke of brilliance.
Roman suddenly realized what he said, chuckling nervously. "Heh whoops, we can wait for that." He blushed a little.
Logan looked down at his plate. "Yeah… We can wait."

The Stresses of Shapeshifting
Janus is struggling to regain control of his shapeshifting powers after they get away from him.
Thankfully, the noble Roman (and the others helped a bit too, I guess) was there to save the day!
In the end, all anyone really needs is a cuddle pile, Disney movies, pizza and... possibly inedible... cake.

Aeroplanes Are Like Shooting Star
Coming to terms with a disability can be difficult, especially when it means you can't do the things you love. When you realise you can't enjoy something you've loved for so long as well you could if or when you were abled.
When you can't make wishes on shooting stars, you make them on aeroplanes instead.

Faeries in the Forest
Virgil promises Roman a day where they'll do whatever he wants, even if that means spending the day hiking in the forest.
When the pair stray from the path and find themselves lost, Virgil worries that it might be the end- that is until they meet a seemingly friendly fae who promises to lead them back to the path free of charge...
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
----
The Official Sanders Sides Emergency Sleepover
Patton decides that with the recent tensions in the mindscape after their last video, the best course of action would be to host a sleepover.
Somehow, it didn't end in a complete disaster, despite the two gatecrashers, Roman's inability to cook, Logan's complete cluelessness and Virgil's incredibly long list of doubts.

Assassination
The plan to assassinate the prince was simple, get in, stab him in the back, get out again. Easy, simple, very little room for error.
So how the hell does that end up with the prince not only still alive, but now accompanying Janus and his friends who all plotted and actively attempted to murder him? I hear you ask.
Well the answer is actually quite simple: Both Janus and the prince are very, very gay.

Proper Wing Care
Roman isn't that great at taking care of his wings himself, so Virgil has to step in sometimes.

Primroses and Periwinkles
It was a normal day when it first started happening.
Roman thought he might’ve been getting sick. It was winter, and though the sides weren’t as easy to infect with diseases like the flu he was pretty sure it was still possible - he remembered Patton being sick a few times, at least.
And then, one day, when he and Virgil had been playfully bickering on the couch - another debate about which Disney movies were better that had him laughing and blushing - the petals started to appear.

Where the Ashes Settle
Roman was prepared for normal day, leave the hotel, get coffee, go to the station and head home.
He hadn't made room in his schedule for getting caught up in a villain fight, nor getting kidnapped by the villain and his arch-nemisis, though.

Into the Snake's Den
Things going missing in a household of four wasn’t uncommon, really. It was normal enough to misplace a sock on laundry day, or get one of your shirts mixed up with someone else’s and never see it again, or misplace one piece of jewellery from a set. Losing things was not out of the ordinary, what was out of the ordinary was just how often it happened for this particular household.
Logan theorised they potentially had borrowers, and if that was the case Patton was content to let them stay, though Roman had always brought up the point that who - or what - ever the culprit was, it was stealing items much too large to be a borrower. Patton had offered the idea that perhaps it was a fairy, or a spirit who lived nearby, in which case the group was even more eager to drop the issue.
That was until something important went missing a few weeks later.

Ship of Dreams
“You know - they say this ship can’t sink, it was all in the papers, impossible - they said.” “Yes, that’s what I’ve heard,” Roman shrugged, shifting just a little closer. He wished he could wrap his arms around him, press kisses to his cheeks - pink with the cold - but they couldn’t, not in public. Roman hoped that was something that would change one day. “If… if she did sink - what would we do?” Virgil asked, eyes still trained on the frothing wake the ship left in its path. “Why, I’d swim us to America, of course, I promise,” Roman said, reaching over to brush his fingers over Virgil’s jaw, so he’d look over at him, “But she won’t sink, don’t worry so much my darling.”

The Lost LIbrary
The Library was, first and foremost, a sanctuary. The Library was infinite, The Library was filled with things - all anyone could ever want. Those who lived under The Library’s roof were happy. The Library was, to Virgil, nothing more than an extravagantly decorated prison.

Across Land and Water, Forever and Always
My Sanders Sides Gift Exchange fic.
After Patton and Logan are selected to attend the annual meeting between merkingdoms, they expect an easy enough swim up the river to their destination. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, the river no longer flows as strongly as it did and because of it they can't make the journey in the traditional way.
Together, along with two other magic folk who they... may have accidentally roped into their journey... must now find their way overland to complete their journey instead, little did they know that this particular adventure would change their lives in ways they could never expect.

The Choosing Ball
The law is clear and very very simple: Janus must choose someone at the ball to become his future husband or wife. He would have two days to pick and at the ball they would choose. If he refused or wasn't chosen, he would be considered an outcast, a criminal against the state. Easy, simple, there was just one tiny problem.
Janus was already in love with someone else. Someone who he didn't have the option to choose.
Fortunately for him, Prince Roman doesn't seem to see that as a problem at all.
| Ao3 | Tumblr |
We'll Save You
Janus finds himself stumbling into problems like one stumbles over rocks on the road, except some problems are a little worse than others. But when he finally stumbles into someone who isn't like everyone else Janus' had met so far in this unforgiving world, he thinks that maybe there is some merit to the world after all.

To Make a Heaven of Hell
Virgil knew he was dead, somehow. And somehow death was loud and bright and overwhelming, the people within it were beautiful and diverse and strange and the places big and magical and wondrous. But it was hard to accept that you are good, after a short life of being told that you are bad. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help, some hot demons and a whole universe full of new friends and family to get you to accept your paradise.

Ribbons And Rainstorms
Roman Edevane has been terrified of storms since his twin brother's death when they were small children. He sits and he watches the dark clouds roll from his window, too afraid to sleep but unable to tear his eyes away. Then, one night, lightning strikes the temple on the hill and he forgets all about the storm in his rush to protect it. When he finds not a burning temple, but the God of Storms himself.
After that he kept coming back—Why? He wasn’t sure, and though meeting the god responsible for the storms doesn't abate his fear completely at first, Vi was… nothing like Roman could have ever expected. The God of storms was kind, he was sweet, a little shy and not to mention a whole other level of handsome. Somehow Roman can’t help but fall for them.
But he can’t be in love with a God… can he? Even if he was, could a God ever love him back?

Over The Rainbow
Reds oranges and pinks almost always took centre stage in his drawings and paintings - after all, they were the only colours Roman could see, but the backgrounds were always made up of shades of grey - for him - that would be bright, vibrant colours for everyone else. They represented how he saw the world, and being honest… Roman was a little scared for it to change.
Later on, he would wonder why he worried.
He saw blue first

The Spiders' Forest
The forest was dangerous, they said. That's the spider’s place.
Roman and Remus Taylor lived in the village of Dumhan-Collie, a sad, dingy little town along the edge of an equally sad, dingy forest. Most of the people who lived there were miserable, angry or both and the collective dream of the town was to leave it far, far behind.
Most visitors didn’t stay long, and those who did tend to regret it quite quickly.
The main reason for all this? The spiders.
