Mushroom Circles
Chapter Eleven
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Virgil stared around him for a few moments, in shock. What the absolute hell.
He hadn’t done anything- he’d just wandered around after work- it wasn’t his fault that the tree root had tripped him up. He remembered noticing that his arm was bleeding. He remembered noticing a few mushrooms nearby. Then, he opened his eyes and he was here.
He absolutely, positively hoped this was a dream. But, from the way his arm was stinging, he could tell it wasn’t. He felt his breath speeding up.
Why the absolute hell was everything so big? Why the fuck was the sky purple?! Where- where was he?! He stared around him.
There were people around him, he noticed. He was glad that there were stupidly-large plants around him, which were concealing him from view.
The people were all unnaturally coloured, and they were giant. Many of them were flying, because apparently he’d tripped into some bullshit fantasy land. He could still feel his breathing speeding up.
A few minutes passed of him trying not to hyperventilate so hard that he would pass out, before one of those giants walked closer to him. It had grey skin, and yellow scales on its left side.
Virgil took a shaky breath, trying to quieten his breathing- he couldn’t get found. He didn’t want to be found by something so big, he didn’t know what it would do to him, though his mind was supplying him with many, many possibilities.
From the way it was looking around with those eerily slitted pupils, scanning the floor as though it knew exactly what it was looking for, he felt that it knew exactly where he was already- that it was just toying with him.
When its eyes finally locked on him, it brought its arms out of its cloak, and Virgil noticed that it had thrice as many as it should have.
He was still hyperventilating, and the way this thing was crouching down to get closer to him with a far-too-sharp grin was so very not helping. He stumbled backwards, but it grabbed him either way.
Between its thumb and index finger on one of its left hands (the lower one he thought it might have been), he felt less than safe. It said something in a voice akin to hissing, still grinning like a child that had found an amusing toy, which was not a comparison he’d like to think more of.
The hold it had him in was not stable, held between only two fingers. The thumb on his chest, and index finger on his back was restricting his breathing somewhat, but it wasn’t like he was breathing well, anyway.
It rotated its hands ever so slightly, as though to look at him from another angle. Virgil yelped in fear, feeling as though he’d fall from this great height. His reaction simply elicited a small laugh from the creature. He felt as though his heart was going to burst, and he was almost certain that his life was all but over.
It moved its hand again. This time closer to itself, placing him in a pocket inside the cloak. The fabric was soft, expensive-feeling, but he couldn’t care less. He began to try to climb out of it, even knowing how stupid of a plan that was. With how close he was to its body, the chuckle that he heard from it, he could also feel, and it shook him to his core, like he was standing directly on a speaker
It reached into the pocket and pushed him down slightly, and before he could attempt again, he felt movement and the cloak was swaying and moving too much that he couldn’t even try to climb.
It was walking. Such a mundane thing, but it was affecting him so much. He had absolutely no control over what happened to him- had absolutely power in this situation
The giant whatever-it-was walked for a while, before he heard even more sounds, like that of the snake-ish giant, but deeper, less hissing, and slightly further away than how close he was to the snakeish one
When the one that had kidnapped him spoke, he could once again feel it reverberating in his bones. It reached back into its pocket, grabbing him once again between finger and thumb and bringing him out of the pocket with its middle hand, showing him off to the second giant
The second giant had blue skin, dark glasses, and dark blue hair. It was dressed smartly, and stared straight at him with dark eyes. It was clearly shocked, but it looked away from him to talk to the first one again
Snakey, as he decided to call it in his mind, adjusted its grip, moving its hold to dangle him by the hood of his hoodie. His eyes widened in alarm, though his body was frozen in fear. He was lifted closer to its face as it replied to the blue one in a tone that felt rather absentminded
Blue said something else, gesturing toward a table in what seemed to be a giant living room. Virgil was soon placed on his own two feet, and stumbled back in a feeble attempt to put some distance between him and the giants, looking between the two and hearing his heart in his ears.
He hated this- he so, so hated this. He stared between them as they discussed something- probably to do with him, he thought miserably
How and why was he even there? For the next few minutes (possibly less than one minute, but he was too tense to take proper notice), he watched them discuss him, before Blue scooped him into its hand, and carried him to a different table
It took him a moment to notice the other human wrapped in a blanket, but before he could process that, he was placed down and the other human was nudged awake by Blue
They awoke with a start, briefly staring at the giant with a terror that Virgil could only see by being so close, before they saw him.
“…Hey,” they said, quietly “how- how are you? Wait, that’s a stupid question, probably not good, right? I mean you’re on a giant table in a giant faerie’s house, you’re not exactly gonna be a-okay with everything, I mean, I certainly was terrified when they found me. Not so much anymore, but I know how scary it is, so, you know..” they rambled
Virgil was still staring at the giants- faeries, apparently- but he wondered absently how long it had been since this guy had actually spoken to someone. Probably too long.
The faeries left the room to speak to each other, Virgil turned to properly look at his fellow human.
“What- what is this place?” He asked quietly
They gestured dramatically “This,” they said with a flourish “Is the realm of the faeries,”
They leant closer to him, as though sharing a secret
“It kinda sucks, but… sounds cool, at least,”
Virgil nodded. He wasn’t so sure about it sounding cool, it sounded like something kinda dorky, but whatever
“Why are we here?” He asked
His fellow human stared into the distance dramatically
“I mean, I don’t know about you, but I hurt myself and bled on a mushroom circle, so… maybe if you did something like that, that’s why you’re here,”
Virgil looked down at his arm
Virgil looked towards the other human
“What’s your name?”
They looked around them, as though scared that someone would be listening in
“Okay, you can not call me by my name while we’re near the faeries, okay? But, uh, I’m Roman,” they said
“… why can’t I call you by your name near the faeries?” He asked skeptically
Roman looked around him again, as though scared the faeries would reenter the room while they were speaking
Roman explained his reasoning- that there was a chance that the faeries would gain even more power over him, so he didn’t want them figuring out his name. Virgil shuddered
“Yeah, I get that.. don’t call me my name in front of them either, but I’m… I’m Virgil,” he said quietly
For the next few moments, he and Roman sat in silence. The faeries had still been in the other room
“So, is it just those two, or is there more?” He asked, almost dreading the answer
“There’s another. But they’re really gentle and they’re a bit easier to read than those two,”
——
Janus had been bored when he’d been put on babysitting duty- he’d teased Tiny a little, but it didn’t react very strongly like it used to, so it was just boring
It had gone to sleep after a while. Janus wasn’t even allowed to touch any of Logan’s books while he was alone (not that he’d want to, they were all boring and undramatic)
So, when his senses began to prick with interest, he’d immediately wanted to investigate. It felt far too similar to when he’d felt that his dear cousin had found Tiny for it to be nothing
He quickly scrawled a note and left it on the counter, leaving Tiny asleep and climbing down from the house. He followed the feeling to a small clearing
He could sense its general location, but he looked around either way. It was small, he noticed when he found it, possibly even smaller than Tiny. He picked it up between his finger and thumb and looked at it.
This- this was entertaining. He brought it closer to himself, and placed it down in his pocket, and (after pushing down its highly amusing escape attempt) he set back off to the house.
Logan was back when he walked in, and didn’t seem to appreciate his leaving the house (but he literally left a note so who cares)
But, his want to scold Janus for his actions soon dissipated, when he brought out the second little creature
Once they had introduced it and Tiny to each other, Logan brought him to a different room
“I did find some information,” he started, bringing out an old book of folktales and flipping to a page near the end
Janus read it. Oh? He grinned, imagining how amusing it would be to control one of the little… humans
He looked in the direction of the kitchen. Of course, he probably wouldn’t actually, even he could admit that was maybe a little bit too far. Maybe only a single inch over the line, but still too far

Mushroom Circles
Chapter ten
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Logan took note of every reaction Tiny had, and to what. They were startled by Patton’s sudden touch on their arm, but that was just as obvious as the way they were scared when Janus was nearby.
They evidently didn’t forgive Janus for what he had done. Janus had attempted to claim that it was because they mustn’t have understood the apology, but Logan knew for sure that they did. Their reaction was far from the non-comprehending stare they often had when hearing words they didn’t understand.
In addition, they had heard apologies from Logan and Patton enough times that he was almost a hundred percent certain that they must understand it. He figured that they simply had not liked Janus’s (admittedly not the best) apology, and had reacted as such.
Logan not only didn’t disagree with their assessment of the apology, but in fact he would have thought about doing the same as them had someone given such a lacking apology to him. Of course, he wouldn’t have done the same, despite thinking it, as he never acted that dramatically, and quite frankly, he’d have simply walked away from the conversation if it were him.
Tiny didn’t have the same luxuries of leaving the situation, but could still show their unimpressed attitude in their own way. Logan almost felt a smile creep onto his face.
All six of Janus’s arms were crossed stubbornly.
“Why should I have apologised if they won’t even give me a chance?” He was complaining, as Patton was checking on Tiny.
Logan pinched the bridge of his nose, pushing his glasses up accidentally in the process.
“You apologised because you were told to, and you sounded like it, I doubt I’d have accepted that apology either,” Logan informed him bluntly.
Janus, turned away from him in much the same manner that Tiny did to Janus, which Logan had to admit was quite amusing. He still had his questions about Tiny, not one of them having been answered.
What were they? Why were they here? Why hadn’t they shared their name? Why were they so tiny? Why didn’t they have any magic? Why were they so faerie-like, but so different?
They had basic features replicated, though on a much smaller scale, but the only colours that they had as a part of their skin and hair were shades of beige and brown. Their eyes were green, but that was the only colourful thing about them other than their clothes.
They had a noticeable lack of wings. And a noticeable lack of extra limbs. Their ears were rounded rather than pointed, and their teeth had barely any that were sharp.
He had no clue what they were.
He wondered if they felt the same about him. Were they just as clueless as he, when it came to each others’ species? Or did they know more about him than the very little he knew about them?
At the very least, they likely knew how they got here, which Logan didn’t know. He sighed.
A few weeks later, he still knew next to nothing about them. They had become more vocal over the few weeks, though he understood very little. They greeted him when he greeted them, clearly having learnt the greeting from him and Patton (Logan pretended not to be amused at the way they blatantly ignored Janus if he ever tried to say hello to them)
He was still having to resort to calling them Tiny, due to the fact that they still hadn’t shared their name, and any time they tried to ask, they’d freeze up, becoming more nervous again. They’d stopped asking them for it- they clearly had a reason for not sharing it, perhaps something cultural. Logan knew nothing of them.
Janus had not been tormenting them, in Patton’s words, for the past few weeks- at least not at the same extent that he was beforehand.
He was still annoying them, poking and prodding them, and making snide little comments. Janus was banned from being the one to bring them their food, as he’d attempt to annoy them by stealing the food off their plate, often making little comments about how they’d never be able to eat all of it, anyway.
Tiny didn’t often get all pale and scared because of it, anymore, but did often get very visibly annoyed. He noticed that they often crossed their arms when they were annoyed, and they tended to mutter and grumble in their own language.
Logan found the language extremely interesting- but he had not yet figured out the meaning of any words. He hoped that could be remedied at some stage.
He was voicing his concerns about what they were to Janus in a different room than Tiny was in, and doing so quietly- he didn’t entirely know how much Tiny understood at this point- when Janus spoke up.
“Y’know, I think there’s an old folktale about weird little tiny people, maybe that could give some insight,” he said, absentmindedly, as though this wasn’t information that might’ve been useful a while ago “I’m sure from what I remember that it matches at least a little with Tiny,”
Logan stared at him a few moments.
“And you didn’t tell me about this weeks ago?” He asked, barely concealing his annoyance.
Janus shrugged, checking his nails “Never came up,”
Logan groaned.
“Alright,” he said through gritted teeth, trying not to shout at him for deciding that this wasn’t important information. “I’m going to go to the library and look up different stories. You will stay here, okay?”
Janus looked up from his nails in disbelief.
“What? On my own?” He asked, with wide eyes.
Logan nodded, grabbing his bag.
“Tiny won’t like that,” Janus replied, with a forcefully smooth tone, which suggested that he was also nervous about the idea.
Logan ignored that.
“Then don’t bother them,” he responded shortly, beginning to leave.
Truth be told, he also wasn’t 100% on board with the idea of Tiny and Janus being on their own here, but he also didn’t like the idea of Tiny being actually alone. Patton was out for a while, tending to some plants for the day as a favour
It didn’t take long for Logan to fly to the library, luckily. He brought out three books of folk tales and began reading, searching for any mention of tiny people.
It took an hour or two before he found it, but Janus was right. It matched up. It was one of the less popular stories, and it was old.
The tale detailed a race of tiny people from another world. Non-magical, and fragile. There was an illustration of one of these ‘humans’ and Logan was almost startled by how similar it looked to Tiny. He carried on reading.
There was some kind of natural portal between the worlds, only activated by certain actions. And then he read part of the tale that had one of his questions answered, but left him extremely concerned.
Humans, according to all recollections of the tale, have no magic. But they do have something strange; something in them reacts with faerie magic, meaning that they can be controlled if you learn their name. Most humans in the tales couldn’t speak, so it’s supposedly hard to wrest the information from them, but they could become a valuable tool if you do find yourself faced with the fabled creature.
Logan read it and reread it again, trying to expel the sour taste in his mouth that came from the words and the implications of them. They could be controlled? No wonder they refused to say their name- they clearly knew about this. It certainly gave him an explanation as to why they got so nervous at the idea of it.
He silently checked out the book and put it in his bag and began flying back to Patton’s house.
Strangely, the rope ladder that Janus liked to use to get in and out of the house due to his lack of wings was down. He ignored that and entered the house
The first thing he noticed when he walked in was that Janus was nowhere to be found. The second thing was that Tiny was asleep on their blanket on the table- their sleep schedule had been very random since he’d first found them, and hadn’t much fixed itself. The third thing he noticed was a note on the kitchen counter
“Something interesting happening a little while away, I’ll be back soon,” he read under his breath, careful not to wake Tiny.
Logan grumbled slightly and watched out of the window for Janus’s return
After a few minutes, he did return, seemingly uncaring to Logan’s disapproving stare
“So, what was so interesting that you left Tiny alone after I specified that you were to stay here?”
Janus rolled his eyes
“Oh please, they were asleep when I left, I doubt they minded. But, you might wanna wake them for this,”
Logan furrowed his eyebrows
“Why,” he asked in a suspicious tone “What was this interesting thing you went out to see?”
Janus grinned and reached into his pocket with one of his hands, bringing out another tiny person. Another human.
This one had slightly paler skin, darker clothes, and different hair. They had strange smudges under their eyes that looked like some form of makeup. And they looked entirely terrified.
He could only see half of their face but what he could see was absolutely filled with fear. He looked away from them and back up to Janus
“What- where did you find them?” He asked desperately, adjusting his glasses
“Just a few minutes walk away from here,” Janus asked, dangling the new human in front of his face
Logan frowned
“I thought you learned from Tiny not to dangle them, it scares them,” he said gesturing for him to place the human down on the table, which Janus did. The human stumbled backwards, eyes flittering between them both with clear and pure terror
Logan and Janus talked between themselves for a few moments, discussing how best to go about this, before deciding to wake Tiny up (something Logan almost never did- he knew they didn’t sleep well), and put the other human on the table with them
Both humans stared at each other but Tiny began to speak, though the second one didn’t at first, still staring at he and Janus, as though they were scared of what would happen to them. Logan pushed his feelings down
He’d have a lot to catch Patton up on when he got back

Chapter Nine
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Roman glared at Janus, who was now having a laughing fit. Ugh, he felt sick after that little levitation stunt. The fact that Janus was only laughing, and showing absolutely no remorse for their actions just made Roman feel…
For lack of a better term, blegh.
He felt blegh.
It was like every negative emotion was stacked on top of each other in one horrific sandwich. He was angry, he was scared, he was upset, he was jealous that the faeries had every advantage over him, and he was so, so tired of dealing with all of this.
Was it too much to ask that he be able to go home? Was it too much of an unreasonable request that he get put in a situation where someone, anyone even, would understand him? Just someone who he could talk to?
He pushed his head into his hands and leant backwards. He was sick of this, he was so, so sick of this.
The faeries were discussing something above him. He hated how loud their voices were. He hated that he had virtually no context to help him figure out any words- he hated that he even had to.
He hated that he had to be saved from drowning in what was pretty much a puddle, he hated how much attention Logan and Patton put into making him less startled- it was embarrassing.
On the flip side, he hated how little attention Janus put into the same- it was dehumanising to be treated like a simple plaything by someone so much larger than him.
He hated how he couldn’t even say anything to them. His little outburst had been the first time he’d spoken in front of them (other than when he was drowning, but that was special circumstances), and all it did was make Janus laugh. They could understand him only as much as he could understand them- less, even.
He knew their greetings, he knew how they apologised. They didn’t know this stuff about him.
He just… he just wanted to go home. He wanted to put this whole mess out of his mind and go home. He missed his bed, he missed his house, he missed his brother. He missed a whole lot.
He looked up at the faeries. All three of them were too close to him. Patton was saying something to Janus, who actually looked somewhat apologetic, for the first time Roman had seen. Wow, never thought he’d see the day, he thought bitterly.
Where was this sympathy before the torment that they’d subjected Roman to? He watched them go back and forth in conversation for a small while, before Janus, looking as though they had a gun to their head, turned to look at him.
“I’m.. sorry,” they said, with a vaguely apologetic tone, though it was clear that their words were being forced to be spoken. It was the same words the other faeries used as an apology, so the meaning was quite clear to him.
Roman re-crossed his arms, and turned away from them. Their apology was certainly not accepted. Especially not since they clearly weren’t giving it of their own accord.
He heard the chatter start back up again. This time he had no clue what was being said, but he had simply stopped caring at this moment in time- he couldn’t bring himself to care about anything while he was still thinking about home.
He couldn’t bring himself to care, when he was still shaking from being levitated and brought across such a distance in an instant like he was one of the mere objects the faeries did the same to.
He couldn’t bring himself to care when he was in such a position.
How would he even figure out what was said, anyway? He couldn’t just magically understand languages. He sighed.
He felt a light touch on his arm, and unwillingly flinched. It was just Patton, but the physical touch was startling to say the least. God, it had been weeks since he had a human near him, he missed it-
Quickly snapping out of his thoughts, he looked up at the faerie, who was staring down at him with that pity-filled face. He looked away, feeling his face heat up in embarrassment.
He knew full well how pitiful he looked. Hell, he felt just as pitiful. Perhaps more so. Didn’t make it any less infuriating. Embarrassing. Annoying? He didn’t know.
He grumbled under his breath, and looked back up again.
He was sure that they certainly felt bad for him, but he was fairly certain that they didn’t entirely understand the length of his sorrows. How much he missed of home, how undeniably scared he felt in their mere presence, how much power they truly held over him (how much more they could if he ever gave his name).
He smiled, unsure of his exact emotions (he was still feeling blegh) but knowing it was always better to put on a confident mask than to show his weakness.
Patton’s hand was still close to him, twitching as though they wanted to grab him. He ignored that, taking a deep breath; Patton was always good at making sure he wasn’t grabbed without his consent.
That wouldn’t change (hopefully. He didn’t want to think about anything like that) but the way their hand was lingering there was making him nervous. He looked at it, and back at them a few times, feeling like he was trembling.
But he shouldn’t have been. He was just being scared for no reason at this point.
Their hand retracted with a small apology to him, and he nodded.
——
Patton had not been very pleased with his cousin after they had pulled such a stunt with Tiny. To be quite honest, he wasn’t pleased after Janus had first met Tiny, either.
The problem seemed to him that it was Janus’s lack of understanding of Tiny’s point of view, and why they were as scared as they were. Not even Patton knew everything that was going on with them, though he could piece together bits and pieces from their reactions.
They were scared. They were scared of Patton, they were scared of Logan, and they were terrified of Janus (and after their first meeting, who could blame them?).
They were small. They were afraid. They were fragile. They didn’t seem to have magic. They didn’t understand anything Patton said to them.
Patton could barely resist the urge to scoop them up into his hands and hug away their negative emotions.
Over the past few days of them living with him, he’d made progress on that front, actually. He’d been allowed to hold them in his hands a few times (only if he was able to find a way to get their consent, of course. He really, really didn’t want his guest to be uncomfortable).
They were… light. Like he was carrying barely anything at all.
Apparently, that rang true for how easy it was to levitate them as well, based on Janus’s smug grin at the way they were now sat on Patton’s kitchen counter.
Patton stared for a few moments as Tiny clearly took in their surroundings. They looked slightly paler than usual, which Patton knew tended to be a bad thing. Before he could say anything, Tiny crossed their arms and in a tone that sounded half angry, half upset they said something.
Patton hadn’t heard them speak before, except for that first time he and Logan had found them. Unfortunately for them, their moment of bravery in finally speaking (though it wouldn’t have been understood either way) was undercut by Janus beginning to laugh.
Patton couldn’t help the way anger began to rise in him- Tiny was going through a lot, why didn’t Janus see that? Why didn’t Janus understand how much he was upsetting them?
“Janus, what are you doing? Why would you do this?” He asked, as Tiny was sitting with their head in their hands (luckily not crying this time- Patton didn’t think he could handle that heartbreak again)
Janus’s laughter calmed down
“Oh, come on, I barely did anything!”
Logan was staying silent right now, but Patton could almost sense the glare that he was giving to Janus. Patton took a deep breath
“Janus. Have you ever once stopped to consider this situation from Tiny’s perspective?” He asked, though he already knew the answer
Janus, like he often did, rolled his eyes, and crossed one set of arms, the others resting on his hips
“What’s there to consider? It’s being pampered, and fed, and you two dote on it all the time. It’s got a good life here,” he said, but Patton just shook his head
“We don’t even know where they came from, Janus. But we think it must be far away; can you imagine being in their position? Somewhere unfamiliar where you’re smaller than everyone, and you can’t understand anything people around you are saying, and they can’t understand you. Just think about how frightening that would be,”
Janus was beginning to look somewhat remorseful, but Patton pressed on
“Now imagine that while you’re just starting to be less scared, a new giant starts tormenting you every chance he gets. Does that sound good to you?” He asked, crossing his own arms in return, his wings flapping once in emphasis
“Alright, alright! I’m sorry or whatever,” he said
Patton nodded his head in Tiny’s direction
“I’m not the one who you should apologise to,”
“Seriously? It won’t-”
Patton cut him off
“They,” he said pointedly
Janus sighed “Okay, they won’t understand me,”
Patton just stared at him until he turned to look at Tiny, who was staring at all of them with wide eyes.
“I’m sorry,” Janus said reluctantly.
They all watched for Tiny’s reaction. They crossed their arms and turned away from Janus, which wasn’t that shocking all things considered
Janus happened to have a bit of a grumble about it though.
Patton gently touched their arm with his fingertip, forcing himself not to marvel at the fact that his fingertip was the size of half their arm. He felt his heart breaking ever so slightly at the way they flinched
They stared at his hand for a few moments before looking up at him. Patton felt so bad for them, his hand lingered for a few moments before he noticed how nervous it was making them
“Sorry,” he apologised quietly, bringing his hand away
They nodded, and he took in the way they were smiling. He doubted it was a real smile

Mushroom Circles
Chapter eight
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Much to Roman’s dismay, the snake-ish faerie was sticking around. He didn’t like the idea, and it seemed like the reasons why were complicated, considering how Logan glared at them a lot
Obviously, there was a reason they were staying. Roman just hoped he’d never be left alone with them. They seemed too… sadistic, to be honest. And Roman was quite scared of them.
He was scared of all of them, but with Logan and Patton, it had dulled down to only a mild sense of instinctual fear, whereas with the other faerie, it was a sharp knife, reminding him how much power they held. He had a feeling that they were doing it mostly for their own amusement rather than plain malice
That did absolutely nothing to make him feel better. He had already considered the idea of being basically a toy to someone of that size, and he didn’t want it to be proven correct, and he didn’t want to experience that power imbalance (again)
They had laughed when they were dangling him. Like Roman’s life was worth just a small bit of amusement. He hated it. It had been a day or so since that. He hadn’t slept, but the faeries had. He’d been too scared.
Over the next few days, there were no incidents. Roman still held absolutely no trust in the snakier faerie (now known as Janus). The fact that they were never in the same room as him unsupervised made him think that Logan and Patton held also at least a little distrust for them as well
They were sat on the other end of the room, using one of their too-many hands to hold a book open, one of their others to sip a cup of what looked like tea, but obviously made with the blue leaves that decorated the trees they were in, one of the others to write something down
The other three hands were doing laying in their lap
Roman glared at them from his seat on the other end of the table, closer to where Logan was reading their own book.
Logan and Patton made a point to greet him every time they entered the room. Roman presumed that it was an attempt to make headway on language learning. Roman knew what the greeting was, but the way his throat closed up at the thought of speaking to these giants prevented him from ever greeting them back
Janus never greeted him. Janus only ever acknowledged his presence when they’d look at him and grin, like they were planning something. Roman hated it very much. His suspicious glaring at them was interrupted by Logan beginning to stand up next to him
Roman stared at them with a spike of panic; were they leaving him alone with Janus?
They looked down at him and stopped for a few moments, saying something directed at him, which he had figured from earlier uses was likely an apology of sorts. Which, go figure, did absolutely nothing to calm his nerves.
Afterwards, they’d said something to Janus, but Roman obviously had no clue what. He hoped he wouldn’t be left alone with Janus, either way.
He’d made some actual progress with the actually nice faeries. He’d even let Patton carry him once or twice- it was scary but they were gentle, and they didn’t just grab him with no warning; instead, they placed their hand out and waited for him to get on of his own accord. They held him in a much more secure position than Janus had
He’d rather not be carried in general, but it wasn’t too bad.
With Janus, however, he’d made a total of zero progress, nor did he want to change that. As far as he could tell, they still seemed to see him as a source of amusement, and he didn’t want them to mess with him again.
His fear of being left alone with them was thankfully unfounded, as they also got up, and both faeries left the room. Roman was left alone on the table, just thinking in silence
He looked out of the window. He wished he could listen to music while he was here, he was definitely suffering from the lack of his Disney music and show tunes. He sighed dramatically and flopped into a lying position.
He would love to watch a Disney movie right now, but he couldn’t, because he was an idiot who went for a walk in the woods in the middle of the night. He rubbed the scar on his hand, and sighed.
He wanted to go home. He didn’t like being tiny, feeling this powerless against anything someone could do to him.
The faeries re-entered the room after a while of him staring at the ceiling, this time with Patton as well. Roman sat up and watched them. They were on the other side of the room, where the kitchen portion was
They were talking, incomprehensible to him, but he could recognise that the conversation had something to do with him, based on the way they kept subtly gesturing towards him. He saw Janus roll their eyes and make a gesture in his general direction before he found himself levitating.
He yelped in surprise
He knew that the faeries could levitate things; they did so often. He didn’t like the sensation of himself being levitated. Janus made a gesture, and Roman found himself moved across the room at a high speed
He was, a matter of seconds later, sitting on the counter in the kitchen. He sat in shock for a few moments, taking in the experience for a second.
It sucked and he’d rather never do that again. He crossed his arms and said the only thing that came to mind
“What the fuck was that for?”
——
Janus found the strange little creature terribly amusing. It was certainly very reactive
He could barely resist the urge to mess with it- the way it tended to freeze like a rodent caught in a trap made him chuckle. It didn’t understand any words, as far as the others had told him.
If it understood or spoke any other language, Janus had never heard it. It was usually pretty quiet.
He was banned from getting too close to it, and he was unable to even be in the same room as it without Patton or Logan there to “supervise”
He rolled his eyes. Just because it was dramatic and started crying after a little teasing. He sat down at one end of the table, sipping his tea and reading his book
He wrote some stuff down, mostly notes on how the author of his book could improve (which he would anonymously post to them, to vastly improve his own reading experience)
Janus often (and no matter what others claimed, this wasn’t a flaw) inserted himself into situations where he was not strictly needed, usually for the amusement and enjoyment it granted him. Hence why he was sat at his cousin’s kitchen table pretending not to be watching the hilarious way the little thing was glaring at him
He stifled a laugh.
On the other end of the table, Logan closed his own book, and began to stand up. The little creature had immediately turned around with a startled look on its face. The other two had begun calling it Tiny, since they didn’t know it’s actual name (if it even had one, Janus thought to himself)
With how easily startled it was, Janus didn’t know why the others had blamed him for it getting startled. That seemed to him like it was barely his fault.
He watched as Logan turned to Tiny and murmured an apology for startling it. Janus didn’t really know why, of course; it couldn’t understand them, had never spoken to any of them, and there was nothing really to apologise for. It got startled all the time, so there was probably nothing to apologise for
There was something in the back of his mind- he was pretty sure that there was some old folk tale about tiny people like it, but he couldn’t remember any details. Perhaps he should look it up
Logan looked up at him, and with a slightly less soft look on his face started to speak
“You’re coming with me, Janus,” he said
Janus rolled his eyes but got up anyway
“Why? Don’t you trust me with your little pet?” He asked, looking about as innocent as he could
Logan didn’t often show emotion, but he did get angry when Janus said stuff like that. The way his fist had clenched was proof enough
“They’re not a pet,” Logan said in a pretty neutral voice, as though they were trying to hide their anger
“Oh? But you do feed it, house it, carry it around, you’ve named it, and Patton’s always squealing about how cute it is- tell me again how it’s not a pet?”
He knew it wasn’t a pet- all this was purely to get a reaction. But Logan was barely giving him anything
“You know that they’re not a pet, and they are not an it,” he said, taking a deep breath as they walked
The rest of the time that Janus was being “supervised” (which was stupid and totally unnecessary) was uneventful.
When they got back, Patton had joined. They were in the kitchen, under the watchful eye of Tiny, who had scarcely moved since Janus had been gone
He rolled his eyes
Patton was making food for everyone, and Logan and Patton were discussing what kind of fruit that Tiny would eat. Janus rolled his eyes
“I can bring it over here if it’s that important,” he said, sick of hearing the discussion
“Might I remind you that you’re not allowed to get too close to them?” Logan said
Janus rolled his eyes. He wasn’t gonna get too close to it. He needed to practise his levitation, anyway
He gestured in its general direction and hovered it above the table, before bringing his hand closer to himself, and bringing the little thing across the kitchen and depositing it onto the counter
He smiled smugly, looking at the little thing
It sat for a moment, before crossing its arms and saying… something in its strange language
Janus laughed. He was not sure what it said but he could tell by the tone that it was either some kind of insult, or even a swear of some variety. That was the first time he’d heard it speak and this is how? Hilarious!

Mushroom Circles
Chapter Seven
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Roman stared at the new faerie with extreme terror. They had grey skin, with yellow scales, and almost impossibly sharp teeth. They had no wings, and instead had three pairs of arms- Roman thought he might’ve seen them once or twice while he was in his tunnel, but he couldn’t remember
Their face was stretched into a grin, and their slitted pupils were focused entirely on him.
His heart was beating with extreme intensity, as he (from the way this thing was looking at him, probably accurately) subconsciously registered them as a predator, and his body had frozen up, like a deer in headlights
He couldn’t take his eyes off them, even as they got closer, hissing out some words in the same language that Logan and Patton used. They were practically circling the table he was on, with a look that seemed reminiscent of someone who’d found the perfect new entertainment
Roman suppressed his shudder. He stared up at them, knowing he was shaking. He knew they all could see his fear, but he didn’t care at this point. He was scared, and no amount of pretending he wasn’t would change that; this seemed like exactly the type of faerie that he wanted to avoid.
They definitely didn’t seem as gentle or concerned about him as Patton did, and, as much as Roman had a hard time deciphering Logan’s thoughts on him, this new faerie definitely seemed far more intimidating to him. His breathing was becoming more frantic, as the snake-like faerie got closer
Roman stumbled back on legs that seemed almost like cement, trying to keep some distance between himself and them. His attempts were clearly amusing to them, much to his upset.
He could almost distantly hear Patton or Logan say something, likely to this antagonistic, slimy snake. He couldn’t hear enough through his panic to register tone, or almost anything around him, through his adrenaline rush, except for the source of this rush.
They were grinning, saying something with a tone that Roman figured was probably dismissive, before he suddenly felt himself lifted in the air. He froze in fear for a few agonising moments. The snake had lifted him by the back of his shirt, like a mother cat with her kittens, though if the mother cat was particularly careless with them
With his shirt pinched between their index finger and thumb, and him dangling far, far too high over the ground, he felt far from safe, and he was hating that grin on their face.
Logan and Patton were approaching them from behind, Roman noticed amidst his panic. The snake turned around to face them, Roman swinging slightly from where he was dangling. He screwed his eyes shut to try ignore his surroundings
He was soon in a much more secure grasp, which only marginally calmed his racing heart. Being held in cupped hands was better than being dangled by the back of his shirt, but he’d much rather have been on actual solid ground. He didn’t like the idea of his life literally being held in someone’s hand
He only began to relax once he was placed back down on the table, and he registered that it was Patton who had taken him from the snakier faerie, and was now retreating to a more comfortable distance, with once again a concerned expression on their face
Roman looked away. He was shaking. There was no mystery as to why. He looked back up at the snake, and saw them with a slightly annoyed expression on their face, as it seemed like Logan was lecturing them. He couldn’t see most of Logan’s face, but from what he could see, he saw the most visible display of emotion from them yet
He had never seen them angry before. He was still shaking, still feeling that adrenaline rush, but he didn’t have a reason why anymore. The snake wasn’t close to him anymore, and he wasn’t being dangled above a dizzying drop.
He brought his knees up to his chest, finding that it had become quite a familiar gesture for him, to attempt to mimic the hold of another human. He buried his head in his knees and, against his will, began to sob
This whole thing, this entire situation was so messed up. He just wanted to go home- but he couldn’t and he was stuck here, unable to understand what people were saying, and small enough to be a simple plaything
He was still shaking, still feeling the adrenaline rush. But maybe if he didn’t look up, he could pretend that he was okay; maybe if he kept his eyes closed, he could pretend he was at home
It was a baseless hope, considering that he could hear all three faeries speaking. By the sounds of things, arguing.
He didn’t move for a while, though he could hear the stupidly large sounds of movement around him. He hesitantly looked up, to survey his surroundings. Tears were still burning his eyes, and his face was probably stained from them
There was only one faerie in the room anymore, and much to his relief, it was Patton
They seemed to be preparing food, and weren’t looking at him at that moment. He felt his chest loosen mildly in relief that he wasn’t under watch by any of them at all times. He slowly uncurled from his crying position, and wiped his eyes
He briefly debated trying to get their attention, but the lump that formed in his throat at even the idea shut that thought down immediately
He sat there in silence for about a minute before Patton turned around from what they were doing and noticed that he was no longer curled up and sobbing (how embarrassing that they had all seen that?)
They took a deep breath, and with a slow pace that Roman could tell was deliberate, they walked closer with a small plate of cut up fruit. While he was thankful for the food, he couldn’t help but feel embarrassed by the way they were clearly trying so hard not to startle him.
They said something as they placed the food down for him, but as usual Roman had no clue what was said. He wondered if eventually he’d figure it out, but he didn’t want to think about staying here anywhere near that long
The food was welcome though, he noted in his attempt to distract himself. When was the last time he ate? It was before the storm, but how long had it been since then?
He began to eat, pretending not to notice the way they were watching him. He was used to performing, to acting- he had performed on many a stage back home, but he had to admit that it was a lot harder to do in such a situation
Acting classes didn’t often focus on how to pretend to be calm in the event of being trapped in an alternate realm full of giant faeries
He didn’t know what he was meant to do, to be quite honest, and he knew there was no way that he’d get a proper answer from anyone, so he just had to keep going as well as he could
——
Logan hadn’t been very pleased when Patton’s cousin had barged into the house. He hadn’t been watching the door at the time; though he had been listening to his and Patton’s conversation, he was monitoring their little guest
They had been startled immediately at the knock at the door, standing up and backing away ever so slightly, eyes searching around the room as though to look for a hiding place
He’d watched them as they slowly paled even further, as they evidently could sense the way the conversation as the door went south, to borrow a phrase.
He wasn’t quite sure what the paleing of their skin meant, but from context clues he could parse that it likely wasn’t the best thing.
When Janus had pushed past Patton and entered the house, the little guest’s eyes had immediately focused on him, and the constant trembling that he had noticed from them had increased.
He watched as, quite contrastingly, Janus had become excited by the sight of the tiny person, and had immediately gotten closer
“Oh? And what is this little thing?” He asked, seemingly uncaring to how the guest had looked more scared, the closer he had gotten
They had frozen up, similar to when they had first seen Logan after waking up here, except they were trembling more
“Uh, that’s just a… guest, they’re just staying here a while,” Patton had said, before Logan could answer
Janus was grinning, watching the little guest
“What exactly is it, though? It’s entertaining, but I like to know things,” his words were hissing, as he got even closer to them, and chuckled as they began to back away clumsily
Logan stepped closer ever so slightly and cleared his throat
“We don’t entirely know what they are, but please refrain from startling or scaring them,”
Janus chuckled again, waving one of his hands dismissively
“Oh, come on, I’m not even doing anything to it,” he said, before extending one of his middle hands out towards them, and picking them up in a hold that absolutely didn’t seem stable
Logan and Patton shared a look of fear for their small guest. They didn’t believe that Janus would drop them, but they could tell this had frightened their guest immensely. They got closer, and Janus spun around to face them, still holding the tiny person
The way their tiny body swung slightly in the insecure grip made Logan angry; they were small and fragile and they were very easily frightened, so why would Janus do this? Patton gently pulled them away from Janus’s grip, and in a much more secure grip, he placed them back where they were before
Logan started to talk to Janus, pulling him away from the table.
“Why would you do that?” He asked in a quiet tone “What reason could you possibly have to do that, after we specifically asked you not to scare them?”
Janus, annoyingly, just rolled his eyes
“Ah right, because it’s totally that serious. No one got hurt, it’s not my fault if it was a bit scared,” he responded with an almost bored tone
Logan clenched his fist
The argument carried on for a while, and miraculously ended with no one getting punched, and for once Janus admitted that he was “somewhat” in the wrong.
Logan wanted desperately to make sure that Janus wouldn’t be close to their guest ever again, however he had no faith that Janus wouldn’t spill the secrets that their guest existed if left to his own devices.
He groaned.

Mushroom Circles
Chapter six
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Roman sat on the truly gargantuan table while his (captors? Hosts?) had a hushed conversation at the other side of the room. Due to the size difference between him and the faeries, he could still hear them pretty well.
But, of course, he couldn’t understand them. He figured the conversation was likely about him, because why else would they be speaking so secretly? Then again, he couldn’t understand either way- surely they had figured that out by his lack of comprehension to anything they had said.
Their conspiration ended after a few minutes of Roman sitting alone with his thoughts (but for once not in darkness). They approached the table he was sitting on, and stopped nearby, watching him intently, only moving their gazes away to glance at each other. He watched back, with no little suspicion
They were both acting incredibly strange, but without the context of words, he had no clue why. Cyan put a hand on their own chest, and said a word, and then Nerd did the same, but their word was different
After a few moments of staring, he realised they were giving him their names. He nodded to himself, taking the information in. He began to lift his hand as though to mirror their gesture, opening his mouth, before bringing his hand back down quickly and shutting his mouth, as a thought invaded his brain:
He didn’t know what part of the stories and warnings were true. And he was not going to risk giving faeries his name if it could actually give them even more power over him than they already had.
They stared at him with expectation clear on their faces. He averted his gaze. He could hear their murmuring voices, and he could tell they were still watching him. He took a deep breath
He didn’t know why they were keeping him here. He didn’t know if them having his name would even do anything. But he did know that he’d rather not be taking so many risks while he was here, so he would definitely not be giving them any more power over him.
He understood that them finding him was best for him in that specific situation, it was either they found him or he die. But he’d rather have had a third option of staying safely hidden
They were so, so much bigger than him. They could crush him with one hand if they so desired. They could do anything to him. He couldn’t even get off this stupid table.
He brought his knees up to his chest and looked back up at them. Cyan- no, Patton- was looking at him with some kind of mix between concern and confusion. The nerdish one- Roman believed their name was Logan- was looking at him with that same, not very revealing, look on their face.
Roman looked away again, staring down at the wood grains on the table below him. His hands were fidgeting, which was mostly concealing his trembling. He bit his lip as the thought of them having his name and having the ability to control what he did crossed his mind.
He’d basically be a toy. He pushed the thought away that he was already toy-sized. They could do anything to him- but at least right now he’d be able to fight back somewhat. If the name thing was correct, he’d not be able to.
He looked at the concerned expression on Patton’s face. He might not need to fight back, but he’d like the ability to. He didn’t know what they were doing with him, he didn’t know why they were helping him, but they seemed like they (at least at this moment in time) wanted him to be safe
He swallowed down his fear and properly looked up. He still wasn’t going to give them his name- that idea was far too terrifying. He knew he had already broken some of the fabled laws of interacting with a world like this- things like eating the food, and stuff- but those were all for a reason
If he didn’t eat, he’d have long since died to his hunger. There was no reason he’d need to share his name with them, and so he didn’t want to risk it. There were some things that even Roman wasn’t too impulsive to do.
He stayed silent, even as the faeries murmured in tones that sounded almost concerned. He watched them, as their murmurings trailed off, and they looked back at him
Patton sucked in a breath of air, as though they were about to speak, but before any of their words left their mouth, they were interrupted by a sharp knock at the door.
Roman sprung to his feet, backing away slightly. Two faeries were enough, and he even slightly trusted these two. Any more and he might die of shock.
Looking at Logan and Patton’s faces, he could tell that they were also shocked by this sudden visit. This did absolutely nothing to calm Roman’s racing mind
Patton was the one to go and answer the door, with Logan keeping an eye on him. Roman clenched his fist to stop himself from trembling. He took a deep breath, and didn’t look away from the faeries
He could hear a voice from outside the house, and it sounded far too much like a snake’s hissing for him to relax.
——
Patton had been extremely worried about the tiny person. He’d wanted to make sure they were safe, they were okay.
They were scared of him, in a way that made Patton’s heart clench. He hated the idea that someone could hold so much fear just by being in the same room as him- though, he could understand their reasons, he didn’t want to think about them being afraid of him
He knew that they were almost impossibly small next to him, that they couldn’t understand any of the reassurances he told them, that he was bound to look a bit scarier to them, being giant to them, but… he didn’t like the idea of them being scared of him, with him unable to talk to them to fix that.
He figured that he and Logan should try and begin actual communication with them- obviously starting as any introduction should, with names
He discussed it with Logan quietly on the other side of the room, aware that their guest was watching them from the table. He looked at them and felt his chest tighten uncomfortably at the sight of them watching him back with suspicion clear in their stature
He and Logan walked closer and introduced themselves. Their guest stared for a few seconds, before nodding. Patton watched as they began to raise their arm as though to introduce themself in return
Patton furrowed his brows in both confusion and concern, as they pulled their hand back down, and their face got a shade paler. Patton didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing, but he figured it probably wasn’t good. Something had spooked them worse, and Patton didn’t know what, or even why.
He didn’t even know what they were, or what they were supposed to do to help them.
“Are they okay, do you think?” He asked quietly, still watching their little guest closely. They had brought their knees up to their chest. Patton felt like he wanted to scoop them up and protect them from anything harmful or scary- but he also felt that that would be counterproductive, all things considered
Logan took a few moments to respond, his wings fluttering in thought
“I am mostly unsure. But it seems like something or other frightened them. It might be best to avoid the topic,”
Patton nodded slightly, still looking at them in concern
“Well, that- that’s okay, we don’t have to know their name, really,” he said, not entirely certain if he believed his own words
He was about to speak again, carry on his rambling, but was interrupted by a knock at the door. He and Logan looked at each other in mild alarm
“You- you stay here and make sure they’re okay, I’ll answer the door,” he said, fidgeting lightly, before running towards the door
He answered as casually as he could, trying not to let on that they were hiding a tiny, scared little person
The person on the other end of the door happened to be his cousin, Janus, whom he didn’t often see- though, always happened to show up if something interesting or unusual had occurred.
It was one of his strange talents, that had Patton worried about his own ability to keep this a secret
“Good afternoon, dearest cousin,” Janus greeted, with a sharp toothed grin. All six arms were extended in a welcoming gesture
“Good afternoon, Jan,” he greeted smiling back, though he wasn’t entirely sure he was convincing enough
Janus raised his eyebrow, his grin becoming a smaller smile
“Anything.. interesting occurred since we last spoke?” He asked pleasantly
Patton knew he had some sort of a sixth sense for interesting happenings, and Patton knew that he was great at knowing if someone was lying, and so he resolved that trying to avoid the topic was his best course of action
“Oh, you know… maybe a few, but, uh, why don’t you talk about what’s gone on with you!” He deflected, laughing nervously
He snuck a sideways glance to Logan and their guest
Janus looked at him with an expression that didn’t reveal much about what he was thinking
“Who’s in there, Patton?” Janus asked, a hint of mild amusement in his voice
Patton laughed nervously
“Oh, you know, just Logan,” he said, fidgeting, and trying to look convincing. He was never very good at that
“Really?” Janus asked, clearly picking up on Patton’s inexperience of lying “Just Logan?”
“…yes?”
Janus’s smile was back, conveying something almost smug
“Then I’m sure you won’t mind letting me in, then,” And, with no time for Patton to stop him, he walked into the house
Patton looked at Logan and the little guest with a desperate look. The tiny little guy was stood on the table, staring at Janus with a face that had somehow become paler, and their trembling was almost more noticeable than ever
Janus was staring right back at them, with a slight shocked expression, but clearly he seemed immensely interested by them
Patton sighed and hoped to all that this would go well

Mushroom Circles
Chapter five
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Logan held the little creature in his hand. He didn’t know what to do, what to say- but he knew he had to get them warm.
He wasn’t too sure what they were; they looked almost like a faerie, but with a few very noticeable differences. Firstly, they were tiny. Second, they had strange coloured skin and hair. Third, they had no wings, and unlike wingless faeries, had no extra limbs that would make them at less of a disadvantage.
Right now, they were as limp as a dead body, though the small, almost unnoticeable, shivers that wracked their tiny body in his hand proved that they weren’t.
But they could be in the near future if he didn’t act fast.
The faeries flew back up to Patton’s house, and Logan sat at the table, still holding the creature.
He magicked them dry, but that did nothing to stop the cold. It did, however, make him realise just how light they were to carry.
They had little clothes, that looked professionally made, though by someone of their tiny stature
He and Patton began to think of the best way to warm them up. Logan barely took his eyes off of them, partially out of worry, partially out of curiosity
He’d never considered that their mystery animal would be something like this. He wondered vaguely what exactly it was, but he had bigger problems to deal with first. Patton had brought a blanket to wrap their… guest
Logan looked at them. They looked so small wrapped in the blanket, and it wasn’t a big blanket by any means, but it put a pit in Logan’s stomach. He knew even less than he thought about their mystery creature, even though he had actually seen them now
Could they speak? Could they understand them? Where had they come from, and why had no one ever found something like them before?
Logan’s now-empty hand clenched. He felt guilty for the way that they had almost drowned- if he had let Patton go check on them sooner, maybe they’d be fine. But he didn’t.
He and Patton watched them for the next few hours. They barely moved, only the tiny rise and fall of their chest to assure the two faeries that their guest was still living.
When they did finally awake, Logan was the one watching over them. They had stared up at the ceiling with an emotion that Logan couldn’t identify, before looking around them and sitting up.
They froze when they saw him, somehow even more still than when they were passed out. Logan made sure not to make any sudden movements- he could imagine that would look rather… scary to someone of such a small stature
He wondered what they thought of him. He had caught them watching him quite a few times, but never actually saw them- he wondered why they were watching him. Caution? Interest?
He walked closer, staying silent for now. He sat down on a chair nearby, to avoid looming over them.
He didn’t know if they could understand him- when they had been shouting, it wasn’t in a language he knew, but that could have just been them panicking
“Are you okay?” He asked in a quiet voice, trying to keep his voice soft to not startle them, and also trying to figure out if they understood him
They simply stared blankly at him. He stopped a moment; this wasn’t proof that they couldn’t understand, though he believed they likely couldn’t, so how would he proceed?
He watched their reaction carefully, before deducting that they likely didn’t understand him. He slowly stood up, and went to find Patton.
Logan found him in the bedroom, folding clothes
“Patton, our little guest has awoken,” he informed him, watching as the half-folded clothes were abandoned and Patton rushed towards the table where their guest was situated
Perhaps running into the room was the wrong course of action, given the way that their guest had flinched backwards, eyes wide, and body shaking. Logan watched their reactions carefully as Patton began to fret over them; they seemed scared, that was to be expected, but they also seemed almost relieved.
Logan wasn’t the best at deciphering emotions (whether his own or others), so he didn’t really know why they seemed relieved, but he did know that the small amount of relief he could see on their face was overshadowed by the fear they were displaying
Patton was asking them questions, and looking them over, but they didn’t respond
“I don’t think they understand us,” Logan spoke up, still looking at the little person
He couldn’t get over how much they looked like a faerie- even if they were missing wings, and had strange coloured hair and skin, and obviously the fact that they were only a few inches tall.
Patton looked back over to him
“But how will we know if they’re okay?” The crease in Patton’s eyebrows was very clear to display his worry, and Logan took a moment to look at their guest, before looking back up at his friend
“I suppose we’ll just have to watch them, and how they react to things. Speaking of, I believe you should move back slightly; I think you’re scaring them,” he said, gesturing subtly to the tiny person, whose eyes were wide and watching both of them interchangeably, while they were trembling.
Patton immediately moved backwards, wings fluttering with nervous energy
“Oh! Sorry little guy, I didn’t mean to scare you!” He immediately apologised, but Logan wasn’t entirely sure that it was useful, considering they seemed not to understand.
He began to wonder where they came from; they didn’t know language, but he believed to have heard them speak a different language, of which he’d never heard before, and they seemed like they didn’t know what to do living in nature, given the storm incident that led to this. They had clothes, but not the low quality one would find of a doll, indicating the clothes they wore were made with someone of such a small stature in mind, and were in fact made by someone of that small stature
So why, he had to wonder, were they living underground with no one else like them around?
Roman had woken up. At first, he had stared up at the ceiling. He didn’t quite know what was going on; he was inside, but why did the ceiling seem so.. far away? He blinked a few times, before remembering the events that had gotten him there. He looked around him, beginning to sit up
He froze involuntarily when his eyes set upon the faerie, the nerdish one. They were watching him with no decipherable emotion, as he’d seen them like before. He felt his breath hitch in his throat slightly
He had been found- he didn’t know what these things would do to him, or what they were thinking. Were they helping? Keeping him for unknown motives? He didn’t know, and the hard to decipher emotion (or rather lack thereof) on the faerie’s face was not helping
They began to walk closer, and Roman flinched back almost imperceptibly. They didn’t grab him or get in his personal space, but after a few moments of them both staring, they began to say something. Roman felt like he’d never have any hope at translating their language
Upon his blank stare, they looked away for a moment, clearly thinking, before standing up and leaving the room. Roman didn’t remember them sitting down. He began to untangle himself from the truly gigantic blanket and stand up
He had only just been able to stand on his legs, which frustratingly felt like jelly, when the second faerie ran into the room. He flinched backwards, staring in shock. This was the closest he had been to a faerie (other than being carried out of the tunnel, but he could barely remember that), and he was scared
They were close to him, hands close as though to grab him (but they didn’t) and they were saying something or other- Roman wasn’t too sure. They were getting too close, too in his space, they were too big. But he could see worry on their face, which told him he probably wouldn’t be hurt
But that didn’t stop his instinctual fear, the way his breathing was beginning to speed up. He watched their every movement, and they watched his. Nerd said something from the other side of the room, drawing Cyan’s attention away for a moment.
Roman looked between them during their short conversation. He definitely wasn’t shaking; he was brave, and he could handle this
Cyan moved away from him slightly, something apologetic in their tone.
Roman sat down, looking between them. He wanted to go home, or to at least be able to understand what people were saying. He was strange to these things, but he was a singular anomaly. Everything to him was different, was wrong, too big, the wrong colour, everything.
He wanted his friends. He wanted his family. He wanted his home.

Mushroom Circles
Chapter Four
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
When the first drops of rain began to fall, Roman had still been sleeping- not that he’d notice straight away had he been awake- but his sleeping body curled up tighter anyway.
Being underground, the rain wasn’t an immediate concern. When Roman had awoken, there was barely a splash in his tunnel yet (though the splashes were quite large compared to rain back home)
The only place the rain was affecting was the entrance, at that point.
Roman watched from safely inside the tunnel.
Until the rain began to get more severe.
The gentle slope of dirt that led to his entrance became mud, which was far too slippery for him to climb up, not that he would really risk going out in that rain. He watched it become mud with mild fascination- he’d never seen that much mud in that little time, but he supposed that was because he was used to much smaller raindrops
For the next few hours, he began to panic. The rain didn’t stop, never getting any calmer, and in some instances getting worse. The rain hadn’t stopped at the entrance, forming what would be a very small puddle had he not been tiny. It had spread
The ground beneath his feet became mud, and water piled on top of that, becoming one pig puddle. In record speed, it rises up to his ankles, then his shins, and he truly began to panic when it got to his knees.
The reality of his situation began to sink in- he was trapped in a hole underground that he couldn’t get out of, and that was filling with water. He flinched as a bright flash of lightning quickly illuminated his surroundings, and a few seconds later, a sharp clap of thunder sounded.
That was longer than usual. Was the brunt of the storm beginning to move away? He thought, almost hopefully.
The rain began to slow, but it didn’t stop. The thunder and lightning had calmed significantly, but the storm had already done its damage, and was still doing so. He was practically swimming at this point, trying to stay above water.
Had he not been tiny, it would have been an insignificant amount of water- perhaps a small puddle. But right now, it was devastating. The rain slowed down further, but still didn’t stop
Roman was barely able to stand, instead floating. How did other animals ever survive in burrows and stuff? He was sure that rabbits didn’t drown every time it rained. Perhaps if he knew, he wouldn’t have this problem to begin with, he thought bitterly
He shivered, covered in water, cold, and barely able to keep his head above water. He heard the sound of giant feet landing on the ground outside with a squelching sound, and over the sound of his own splashing he could hear voices
It was the faeries that he was familiar with, that was for sure. He had no time to think before his mouth started to shout- for once his impulsiveness was a good thing
He didn’t even register what he was shouting, only trying to get their attention. Better them than random faeries who might’ve done something bad to him (not that he knew these ones wouldn’t, but he trusted them more than anyone else in this strange place) or for him to drown
The voices outside went silent. He carried on shouting, not knowing what else he could do- and suddenly part of the dirt next to the entrance was torn away, making the hole leading to his tunnel much bigger, like a giant could reach into it.
When exactly that happened, he couldn’t tell which faerie it was. The lighting was dark, though he didn’t know whether it was because of the storm, or if it was nighttime. The hand wrapped around him
The hand was warm, and Roman could feel his heart beating faster than ever before. He was brought out into the open and made eye contact with one of the faeries, before passing out
——
Patton sat in his house, watching the rain hit the window. It was pretty bad. He sipped at his cup of tea and hummed lightly. Logan was also at his house, drinking his own cup next to him
“How do you think the little creature’s getting on? Y’know with the storm, and everything?” He asked, lightly drumming his fingers on the side of his cup in worry.
He wasn’t quite sure how animals protected from the rain
Logan hummed in thought, and his cup was set down next to him
“Most burrowing animals make part of their burrows deeper to catch rainfall and keep the rest of it dry, I’d presume that it has done the same,”
Patton nodded, but couldn’t shake the feeling that it hadn’t, and that it was having a bad time. Logan seemed to notice his unease, and continued
“Of course, we could go check on it once the rain has calmed slightly,” he offered, adjusting his glasses.
Patton nodded, still staring out at the rain. He hummed to himself, waiting for it to calm down. It thundered and lightning struck several times- but the rain, after several hours of pouring, slowly turned to a light drizzle
He and Logan ventured to the bottom of the tree and looked down at the hole
It looked… well it looked like a lot of mud, to be quite honest.
“I hope it’s alright,” he mumbled, while he and Logan began to crouch closer to it
They both heard splashing, signalling that it was still alive, if anything. Patton breathed a small sigh of relief, but then they heard something else from the tunnel
Their little creature, uncharacteristically, had started making a lot of noise- loudly. They never usually heard it. He and Logan looked at each other in alarm. Patton didn’t know if he was imagining the way it sounded panicked, or the way it sounded almost like words, but so incredibly wrong that he couldn’t piece together any syllables.
The splashing became almost frantic- and Logan quickly widened the entrance to the burrow by using telekinesis to pick up a large section of dirt. Patton watched with wide eyes, as Logan reached in to try and save their mystery animal.
When it was brought out, Patton almost couldn’t believe his eyes. It looked almost like some kind of doll, so small but so… person-like. But it was moving. It stared at him a few moments, before going completely limp in Logan’s hand.
He and Logan stared at each other in disbelief and alarm.
“It- its freezing,” Logan said after a few moments of shocked silence
Patton looked down at the creature
“They?” He offered. It didn’t feel right calling them an it- not now that he could see their tiny little face, and the way they looked so… small.
Logan nodded, still staring down at them
“Right… they. We need to warm them up, they’re soaking wet and they’re freezing,”
Patton nodded determinedly, and tried to shake the shock from his mind

have you ever read a fanfic so good that you wanted to write a fanfic about that fanfic, but was too shy / too intimidated to ask for the author’s permission and too afraid that your writing wouldn’t be half as good as theirs and that it would be an insult to their work that was basically a literal masterpiece, so you just sat there fantasizing about their work and how beautiful it was and how you wished you could just eat it and how you wished canon could write your blorbos half as good as this writer did and how you just wanted to cry because you just loved that fic so much????

Mushroom Circles
Chapter three
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman has to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Roman received food in a similar fashion for the next few days, making sure they never caught a glimpse of him. The fruit sometimes changed. Sometimes it was the yellowish orange fruit he was usually given, the one that he had been scavenging for himself, but sometimes it was a strange blue fruit with a weird texture, or a strange pink fruit instead.
The blue one tasted weird, so he didn’t often eat much of it if that was what he was given. He liked the pink one a lot more, but his favourite was still the yellow one.
He sat down in the room part of his tunnel and leant his head on the dirt wall and hummed quietly
Why was he acting like this was normal? It was the furthest thing from it; treated like an animal by giant faeries and living under a tree in a different dimension. What part of that was normal? He buried his head in his knees
He heard footsteps outside of his tunnel, and didn’t bother to look up. Cyan was probably just giving him some more food. As much as he appreciated it, it felt dehumanising. Like he was just an animal. As far as Cyan knew, that’s what he was.
It always said something while it placed the fruit down.
He choked back a sob. He hated everything about this. He missed home, he missed his brother, he missed his house, his bed. He hated the dark, and that’s all he could be in, here. He hated having no one to talk to, he hated how extremely bored he was, he hated being so small, he hated his tunnel. He wanted… he wanted to go home.
He knew that he probably couldn’t. Even if he could find a mushroom circle, he got here by bleeding on each mushroom in the circle. If the mushrooms were to scale with everything else here, he wouldn’t be able to do that. Even if he did, what if it just took him somewhere worse?
He couldn’t afford to take that risk. He wiped the tears from his eyes. He peeked out at the slope leading up to the entrance; there were two pieces of fruit, one yellow, one pink. He could almost distantly hear the voices of Cyan and Nerd
Very occasionally, he would hear or see other faeries, but they paid very little mind to him, or his tunnel. Good. He lacked any social context to be able to figure out any language, so he didn’t quite know the motives of the faeries that were feeding him
He was inclined to believe that they weren’t malicious- in a way, it kinda reminded him of when he had found a little cat living under his porch. He had fed it everyday, and waited for it to trust him enough to come out. He never imagined that he’d be the cat in a similar situation
The comparison made his skin crawl. He wondered if, at one point, he’d forget that he was a person. He wasn’t acting much like one, nor was he being treated like one. He sighed.
He supposed he couldn’t fault them for treating him like an animal, since he hadn’t given them reason to suspect otherwise (but what if this carried on if they actually found him? He didn’t want to think about that)
He could hear quiet murmuring outside his tunnel. They almost sounded worried.
It had been about ten minutes since the fruit had been placed down, his empty stomach reminded him, begging him to get up and grab it. His legs were shaky, as he got up to walk to the food. His hands were trembling. He clenched them into fists
He took a deep breath, ignoring the way it hitched in his throat. He was fine, and he was going to stay fine. He grabbed the fruit, and started dragging it, one piece at a time.
There was nothing he could do about his situation. He squeezed his eyes tightly shut for a single moment, trying to force the tears back. Deep breath.
He began to eat.
The faeries were still talking outside. He couldn’t understand a single word that came out of their mouths. He ate as much as he could, but then ultimately just curled up in his corner and tried to sleep.
His mind worked a mile a minute, not willing to let him rest apparently. It was funny that this whole situation was what made him finally start not acting on every impulse he had- you’d think that breaking a leg, and later an arm as a kid, would be a good enough deterrent, but apparently it actually took him being trapped in a giant magic fantasy world.
Funny how that worked. He dryly, very quietly, laughed to himself.
He wondered about his brother, not for the first time; how had Remus reacted when Roman went missing in the middle of the night?
He finally fell asleep.
——
Logan’s favourite spot to sit and read had become his favourite for a second reason. He loved to figure things out- this mystery animal was keeping him busy for a while.
Patton obviously also enjoyed interacting with it (in the vague way that was all they could do to interact with it, anyway) but likely more for the reason that it was some kind of small animal, and he loved most animals.
Logan had noticed that if he strained his ears, sometimes he could hear small noises from the burrow. Some were almost melodic, some were just movement- but it only fuelled his curiosity more.
When he couldn’t hear anything, that was usually a sign that it was asleep, which also gave him more questions. It didn’t seem to have a regular sleep pattern, and Logan couldn’t figure out why.
He and Patton collected fruit for it every few days, once it had eaten what they had previously collected. They gave it different fruits to try to figure out what it would eat. Almost amusingly, when they had given it a less common fruit, it had dragged it into the burrow, as usual, but the next time they looked, it had been dragged back to the entrance with one singular bite mark.
Logan picked up the fruit with a small chuckle. Perhaps they wouldn’t give it that next time. It seemed to enjoy the other fruits well enough, though, so it wasn’t much of a problem
Patton was often the one to place the fruit down for it, given that he was a little better at being gentle, and a little quieter than Logan.
He turned the page to his book as Patton carefully placed the food in the burrow
“Food time, little guy,” he murmured.
Contrary to usual, when they looked a few minutes later, the fruit was still where they had left it
“Do you think it’s okay?” Patton inquired, eyes wide in what Logan assumed was probably worry
Logan, someone who preferred to stick to facts rather than pander to emotions, took a moment to think
“I presume it is okay. There isn’t anything to indicate otherwise, and given its strange rest patterns, it might be sleeping right now,” he assured
They talked quietly for another few minutes before checking on the food they had left for the creature. It had finally brought it into the burrow from the entrance.
“That’s good,” he muttered, ghosting his fingers over the tree root concealing the entrance “it’s woken up,”
He and Patton began to pack up their things to go home for the day a few minutes later.
Above them, storm clouds began to gather, unnoticed.

Mushroom Circles
Chapter two
Ao3
When an accidental blood sacrifice leaves him in a strange new world, Roman had to hide
Logan would like to know what has been eating all the fruit
Roman’s sleep schedule had become somewhat messy since landing in the realm of the faeries. He didn’t sleep at night, because that was when he ate and was able to have a little wander, and most of the day was dedicated to watching.
He only slept when he got too tired to stay awake
The nerdy faerie had been leaving the fruit on the ground for the past week, but Roman could see that it had noticed the fruit. He watched, a little more cautiously than usual, as it began to pack up. It looked down at the fruit that had fallen next to it this time
Roman watched it grab the strange fruit, and thought it might actually pick it up this time, like it did at first, but it instead rolled it across the ground, towards his hideout. He froze in place, and restrained himself from squeaking in alarm
Ok, so it might know where he was, that wasn’t too bad. It didn’t mean that it knew what he was, right? He was too hidden for it to know, right? Maybe it just saw the bite marks in the fruit and assumed he was a random animal? He hoped that was the case
He looked at the fruit that was now just outside his hideout and felt his mouth water. It was too far out and the sky wasn’t dark enough for him to risk going out to eat it, but he really wanted it. He considered risking it, but drew himself back and forced himself to think before making any impulsive decisions
That’s what got him into this.
He was in a strange fantasy land, where the main population seemed to be faeries (who were supposed to be the tiny ones, not him, why was he so tiny?). He knew that every fairy tale, every fantasy book, needed an antagonist, a source of danger and misdeeds, and he knew that that role wasn’t typically attributed to the guy with every disadvantage who got dragged into a different dimension
He needed to be cautious, for once in his life. He looked away from the fruit, and found that the nerdy faerie had left. But there were still faeries flying overhead, so he would still be taking a risk to eat. He sighed and retreated from the opening of the tunnel. Just ‘til it was dark, he promised himself, then he could have food.
He sat down and quietly hummed to himself. He was missing home quite badly, but he knew he had no reliable way to make it home. He sighed, bringing his knees up to his chest and resting his head on them. He stayed there for a while
Perhaps he could look out at the world outside of his tunnel, see if it was dark enough for him to eat. He peeked out of his tunnel.
There were very few faeries flying overhead but still a few too many to be able to eat. He sighed, sitting down again. He ignored his aching stomach for now
By the time he was actually able to eat, he was hungry enough that he ate far more than usual. He figured it was the fact that he had it in his line of sight for so long
He fell asleep pretty soon afterwards, on his bed of leaves. He felt like a fairy from his Disney movies, despite the fact that the faeries outside his tunnel were much, much larger than those depictions. He fell into a deep sleep for the next few hours, waking up to the sound of something large moving around.
He sighed, and peeked at the entrance once he had rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He could see a hand, picking something up from the ground outside. Probably the fruit he’d tried to eat
It was jarring seeing a hand that close. Beforehand, distance had been kept enough that he could somewhat ignore the difference in size between him and the faeries.
It was the cyan-coloured faerie, the one he didn’t see quite as often. It was saying something, likely to the darker blue one (he figured calling it Nerd in his mind was easier than referring by colour, especially since both were some shade of blue)
He couldn’t quite hear what was said back to the cyan one, but he supposed that didn’t matter. He couldn’t understand either way.
The cyan one didn’t move away from his tunnel. Okay, Roman was getting nervous now. First, getting the fruit closer to him, and now not leaving him alone? It was gonna be pretty hard to stay hidden at this rate.
It was still crouched down by his tunnel. It wasn’t trying to look into it, but Roman was still nervous with the proximity. He wanted to stay unnoticed for as long as possible, and all this was not helping, at all. He could hear it still chattering away.
Whatever Nerd said next seemed to draw it away from his tunnel, much to Roman’s relief. He moved slightly closer to the entrance, to watch them.
There was nothing better to do anyway. And he knew that it was too dark in his tunnel in comparison to the daylight for the faeries to actually see into his little tunnel.
It was really more of a burrow than a tunnel. It was only about the size of a small room, once you got past the initial entrance, and it didn’t lead anywhere. It made him feel more… animalistic to call it a burrow, so he referred to it as a tunnel, even though it led nowhere.
He watched as the faeries talked to each other, book on the ground next to them and being ignored. Roman ignored the way that felt strange and caused his stomach to turn- Nerd almost never put down its book, even to talk to Cyan.
His first thought was that it had perhaps found something more interesting to talk about- but that didn’t really bode well for his want to stay hidden. There wasn’t much that was particularly interesting nearby, except himself.
Even if they didn’t know what he was, he was sure that them taking a sudden interest in his existence was something that he should be wary of
Then again, why? He couldn’t stay hidden forever, and it wasn’t like he was likely to be able to get home. If they found him, they might do something horrible to him, but something horrible already happened to him.
That’s what got him here.
If they wanted to do something to him, they’d do it whether they found him sooner or later
He sat down glumly, uncaring of the way both pairs of eyes flickered towards his tunnel when they caught a glimpse of movement.
He watched them for a while, but something Nerd said caused Cyan to jump up and hover a few feet above ground (probably just inches to it, to be fair)
Roman could see the excitement on its face, and he retreated back into the depths of the tunnel as it flew away. His heart was racing. What had excited it so much?
He waited, until something finally happened. Cyan had approached his tunnel once again, and Roman stayed carefully out of sight. Instead of standing just outside of his tunnel, or picking something up or putting something down outside of it, the hand entered just slightly inside, depositing something down
Roman waited until the hand retreated, and for it to move away slightly, and then he walked closer to inspect what had been left there
Fruit. They’d cut up pieces of fruit into more manageable pieces and given them to him. He suddenly realised how hungry he was, now faced with food that he could drag further inside and not wait to eat. A small smile graced his face, and he began to drag the fruit a little further from the entrance
——
Patton was hoping that he’d get to see whatever animal had burrowed under his tree. It must’ve been small, to have fit in that tiny hole, and it seemed to really like the fruit nearby!
He talked to Logan for a while, and went to go pick up the fruit that Logan had rolled towards its little burrow the previous day. Logan had been worried that it perhaps hadn’t eaten, but picking up the fruit showed that it had eaten, and it was covered in little tiny bite marks
Patton, still crouched down, reported all this to Logan, perhaps rambling a little more than necessary. Logan reminded him to move away from the burrow so they didn’t startle the little creature.
He sat next to Logan, who had placed his book down
“What do you think it is?” He asked, wondering what kind of smart hypothesis Logan would’ve correlated to the existence of this little thing
“I… am not sure,” Logan started, something Patton had almost never heard from him before, “All the behaviours it seems to exhibit don’t match up to any one animal,”
Conversation carried on, with them sharing what they noticed about their mysterious creature.
“Perhaps it doesn’t eat during the day because there are too many people,” Logan said, tapping his chin in thought. “I can imagine that it would take larger animals as threats and predators enough that it wouldn’t come out for food unless there was very little risk of being attacked,”
Patton thought for a moment “What if I cut up little pieces of the fruit it likes and I put it into the burrow for it? Then it won’t feel at risk of an attack, and it could get used to us!” He explained with a large gesture
Logan’s small smile wasn’t very noticeable, but it made Patton grin more anyway
“Very well, then. I suppose we could try that,”
Patton jumped up, excitedly, wings flapping and keeping him hovering ever so slightly off the ground. He flew towards the fruit in the branches of his tree and started picking them, bringing them into his house to cut up
He brought two small pieces back, and used a spell to keep the others fresh for next time. He quietly approached the burrow, and knelt down, carefully placing the pieces of fruit down for it.
He retreated soon after, noticing the flicker of movement in the dark tunnel. The next time he looked, a few minutes later, the fruit was gone from where he had placed it
He grinned
