Help a Researcher
Leigh Ingram, a student at the University of Ottawa, in Canada, is completing a Master of Information Studies. The proposed research for their thesis is on information seeking behaviours in the fanfiction community, with a specific focus on how AO3 users search through the archive and use the embedded search functions on the website.
This study has received ethics approval for an anonymous online survey, followed by a few interviews. The survey will remain open for approximately 6-8 weeks depending on the volume of response. Following completion of the research, the intention is to share the anonymous data collected and potentially submit an article to Transformative Works and Cultures for consideration, so any findings will be shared with OTW/AO3.
Survey takers must be 18 or older to take part. If you would like to learn more about the study you can review its consent form, which contains the researcher's contact information.

Research Study: Fandom & Generative AI still looking for participants!
I'm still recruiting research participants for my PhD dissertation study!!! If you've already participated, thanks so much! If you haven't participated yet, please consider responding to a quick survey, and sharing with your friends!
I'm interested in understanding fans' perspectives on and experiences with generative AI (text and image generation software). That means perceptions both positive and negative! However you feel about genAI, I'm interested in hearing from you. We're especially seeking diverse perspectives from underrepresented demographic groups of people.
If you're over 18, can speak/understand English, and are interested in participating you can learn more information and take the survey here. I've also made a FAQ post about the study that I've pinned to the top of the blog, and you can see more info on the shareable flyer below. You can also view posts on Twitter/X, Bluesky, and Reddit about the study and share info there! Spreading the word is greatly appreciated :)
Tumblr media
The study is anonymous and voluntary, and you'll be asked about your fandom background, attitudes towards generative AI, and demographic information. The survey should take about 15-20 minutes, and you can skip over any questions you want. You can also elect to participate in a follow up interview, if you want to. The full details are on the consent form, which you'll be able to read before taking the survey! Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Hi, I’m Emma, honours student at the University of Manitoba, and principal researcher of the “Mind wandering, inattention, and attentional control” study, which aims to investigate the cognitive mechanisms underlying mind wandering and its relation to Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
We are currently seeking volunteers to participate in our online study. This study is intended for any adults, regardless of whether you have been diagnosed with, or suspect you have, ADHD.
In our study, you will complete a sustained attention task known as a go/no-go task. Periodically, the task will pause, and you will be asked to report on your thoughts and experiences just prior to the prompt. Following the sustained attention task you will complete brief questionnaires about your personality, prior experiences, and demographics.
The study will take approximately 30 minutes. You can complete the study anytime online at:
https://attentionandlearninglab.com/2023/HE2022-0321-COM/
This research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus, and is being completed under the supervision of Dr. Nicholaus Brosowsky.
Your participation is extremely important for the study, which we thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Emma Fernando

Research Survey
We've been discussing how best to put together a masterpost on research, and realized it would help to know where our audience is as far as research knowledge and techniques. Please feel free to reblog to increase the sample size!
The survey will run until the end of July and then will be closed so we can make use of the results.

Misophonia Research Survey!!!
This is not my project, this is copied and pasted from a Reddit post with permission from the OP.
Investigating Potential New Technologies to Produce Accessible Solutions for People with Misophonia:
Hello! I am a Physics student at Imperial College London. In collaboration with a fellow Physics student and a Design Engineering student, we are working on innovative technologies to support individuals with misophonia. The inspiration for this project stems from the challenges faced by my little sister, who experiences misophonia.
We've successfully advanced to the second phase of a competition that, if we proceed further, will provide substantial funding and support for the development of these technologies. However, we cannot do this alone. It is essential that we incorporate people with misophonia in the development of this idea in order to make it as helpful as possible. For this reason, we have devised a survey. The valuable insights gathered from this survey will guide us in creating more effective and tailored solutions.
Our ultimate goal is to develop a low-cost, accessible solution that can significantly improve the lives of those dealing with misophonia. It is very important to us that we are able to incorporate the experiences and needs of the misophonia community into the heart of our project.
Your participation in our survey would greatly contribute to this effort and help propel the growth of these new technologies. Thank you for your help.

Help Needed!
Hey everyone! I'm posting this here because this is my blog with the most followers. I'm taking an English class that requires a paper that I have to conduct research on, so I made an anonymous survey.
Most questions are optional and multiple choice, and the topic is "What makes an effective writer?" All responses are very appreciated, even if you don't write. <3
Apologies if the options on the main question at the end are a little bit confusing; I tried to explain them concisely to the best of my ability, but feel free to dm me if you need more clarification!

About the study/me/the blog!
Hello Tumblr! I set up this blog to recruit participants for my doctoral dissertation research project. The link to the survey is in the bio of the blog, but here’s some more information!
Who are you, and what’s this blog for?
My name is Irissa; I’m a PhD Candidate at Stony Brook University recruiting research participants for my dissertation study. Broadly speaking, my academic work focuses on technology, fandom and the arts, and I’ve worked on a range of projects in that area. Personally, I’ve been in and around various fandoms since high school (I wrote my first fic at age 15). I made this blog to recruit research participants for my dissertation study, which seeks to understand the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) image and text generation software on fans' experiences.
What’s this study about? What do I have to do?
This study asks questions about fans’ attitudes towards AI and AI-generated media. If you choose to participate (you don’t have to), you’ll be asked to take a short (15-20min) survey where you’ll be asked questions about your attitudes and background. The survey is anonymous.
After the survey, you’ll be asked if you want to be contacted about the second phase of this project, which is a face-to-face interview (60-90 minutes). You don’t have to do this, but if you want to participate in an interview as well, you can let us know on the survey.
Who’s eligible to participate?
You’re eligible to participate in this study if you’re over 18 years old, you consider yourself to be a fan of something and/or consider yourself to be actively participating in one or more fandoms, and you can speak and read English. We cannot allow individuals under 18 to participate in this research (this is due to legal regulations and ethical standards).
Will I be paid?
There’s an optional raffle for participating in this study (you can view more details on that in the consent form). I’m unable to offer compensation for every participant, because I haven’t received funding for this research from either my university or an external source.
Can I share information about this study?
Please do! Feel free to share the flyer and link to this blog to anyone in your networks who you think would be interested in participating. You can also link them to posts about this study on Bluesky, Reddit, and Twitter/X (working on Dreamwidth!). Definitely share the info with your fandom friends!
Where can I get more information? More details about the study are provided in the consent form, which you can read in full before proceeding to take the survey. You can also contact me via email ([email protected]) and through the ask box of this blog with questions. Contact info for other contacts, such as the principal investigator and Stony Brook personnel, can be found on the survey flyer and consent form.
