2023: The year of all time

This felt like the first year post-COVID where things really kicked into high gear for me personally. My new year's resolution was that I would go out and have fun for once.

And had fun I did.

I did some voicework reading for a story podcast, I went to a bunch of amazing concerts (nothing beats seeing Weird Al for my birthday!), and I sorted out a bunch of RL stuff and put a neat little bow on it. Thank goodness.

But fuck all that sappy shit: Here's a small collection of things I really enjoyed this year!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: An excellent sequel to a seemingly unfollow-uppable first film. Takes everything from ITSV, and amps it up to twenty with a stunning visual style, a sonically fitting soundtrack, and a meta-commentary on the nature of Spider-Man's character and whether they really deserve all the tragedy thrown at them.

Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe: The guys who made Pud did another show, this time with funding from the Australian Government! While stripped back in its setting, they continue to provide the same stupid bullshit that put me into laughing fits as they did with their Netflix show. Haven't they done well.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: I think when people heard about "An animated Scott Pilgrim show with the live-action cast and Edgar Wright producing", they did not expect "A proper dissection of Ramona Flowers' character and her motivations, as well as her own journey of forgiving the Evil Exes. Also lots of yaoi." Scott Pilgrim continues to dominate as the premier "guy learns not to be a shithead" franchise.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Accor Stadium: The Peppers prove their pertained power as performers by playing the purest psalms in their prospectus from the past 35 years (eugh, what a mouthful). Flea came out, did a 30-second handstand, waved and said hello to the moon and then got up some people littering in the crowd. Their life is more than just a read-through.

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: I had absolutely no clue who Caroline was before I listened to this album. I now realise that she might just be the person that pop needs right now. A soaring collection of songs destined to become classics down the line, like a greatest hits compilation that doesn't exist. We're all on Caroline's island, and we ain't leaving.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk: I kept my eye on this game as it was developing, and it was absolutely worth it to see it come through in the end. Satisfying gameplay that requires you to learn how to combo to progress, an addicting artstyle inspired by Y2K, and the soundtrack. Holy fuck the soundtrack. I just can't get enuf.

Weird Al Yankovic - TUROTRSIIIVT: Man, what a title. Emu Phillips come out swinging with jokes I did not expect, and then Weird Al comes out aggressively swinging, with all the songs you don't know him for. He then did a polka melody of his parodies, did a ritual halfway through, and then ended the concert on a high note. Only the best from Strange Alfred.

Doctor Who 2023 Specials: That bastard David Tennant returning led me down the rabbit hole known as watching Doctor Who, and did it ever pay off more than these specials. A trans woman saves the day and the Doctor realises he's bi, black, and needs therapy. A magnificent close on a chapter of one of the greatest sci-fis ever, and a bright step into the future.

The Hyperfixation of the Year award goes to none other than

Homestuck, everyone's favourite webcomic! Everyone's.

And I think that's partly because I joined this website to begin with. I probably say this all the time, but leaving Reddit was probably the best decision I could have made at that time. As much as I reminisce, the communities I was in began to get a little stale. Same jokes, same shitposts, a different day. Tumblr in some strange way, is not that. It feels less like a big communal website and more like a collection of small towns spread across a large spot of land. Calm and village-like, you know?

So to all my mutuals, my followers, to the people that liked and reboggled my stinky posts, to all that offered mealworms and crickets in my askbox, thank you. "Gecko Boy" might just be a silly lil joke in the grand scheme of things, but it's a fun joke to play into.

Whatever comes next year, I know I've got the energy to keep going. Have a good 2024 everybody. <3

I love ahs Hotel so much and I post about it (esp James) 24/7, so here are some things I don't like about it (with spoilers ofc):

Ramona's arc. Adding a female lover for the Countess was a great idea, but executed poorly. It made me think Angela wasn't a good actress for a hot minute, but no, the character is just sloppy and based purely on a vibe. She went from an almost sophisticated, successful woman to a random beast used by everyone as a killing plot device. How come she switched personalities like that? Stupid writing here.

Donovan. He shouldn't have been there. While all the other lovers of the Countess add something to the plot (Valentino is the main cause of her actions, March has this back and forth with her plus his own plotline, Ramona demasked her jealousy and tendency to act on a whim, even Tristan made some sense plot wise). Donovan doesn't. He's just kinda there and then he dies. Him hating Iris didn't add much either, it could have been kept off-screen or just as that scene where he overdoses with Sally, and still have the same effect plot-wise.

Tristan and Liz. They were cute but it had no buildup. They fucked once and decided they were in love forever just for some angsty factor in Liz's life. Also how the Countess switched personalities for some time to help with Liz's transition? Weird and very much gave "murphy wants to show that being trans is valid without any reflection on how". I'm not talking about Liz's character as a whole, she's very interesting, just that one sequence and Countess' weird behavior.

The whole primary school class of vampires? Stupid shock value that wasn't even shocking, just annoying. The dynamic of the kids was interesting but their behavior completely illogical.

The random tango with Elizabeth, Valentino and Natasha??? It wasn't sensual because again, it had no buildup.

That's it. The rest was a banger. John's corruption, Alex's madness, March and Countess and their shenanigans, Sally, Countess' kids, Liz Taylor, Iris, Miss Evers... yes the rest was perfection.

I READ MANHUNT SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO chapter 24

Chapter 24 summary: Fran is back and told Indi about the fuck. Ramona is having deep regrets. Beth is back at Fort eating lunch. We learn Fran and Ramona have been fuckig for 3 weeks. We learn Karin, who was Ramona’s second hand, is a double crosser. We learn the terf captured trans woman was one of the Fort’s sisters. Robbie suggests trying to save him but Zia knows better. Karin is beaten and Ramona goes to see her. We learn that Teach will be there tomorrow to execute her. The trans woman was already hung.

Chapter 24 commentary: Terfs do not say cunt this much dude. I also don’t think author realizes that hate fucking is a male concept and radfems have no desire to fuck people we “hate”.

Chapter 2:8

So the rich girl/woman in charge of the bunker is not only selfishly ignorant but also downright monstrous and litterally commits deadly human testing on other people with barely any guilt (she showed a smudge of guilt after being punched in the face and called out on it). And for what? To have her own "family"? She could have adopted or used a sperm from the number of trans women she has working in her pleasure hall but no, she has to carry this one specific infected man's child. And then she makes it everyone else's problem. I honestly don't understand how the people working with her just accepts this. I agree with Indi that this place needs to go, though I would prefer if they could break it down and redistribute the resources/food to those in need.

Ramona apparently did not recognise Fran what-so-ever since she's not having a single thought about her. She's too worried the head terf will figure out she's a chaser and takes out her stress by being a fairly typical abuser. I don't understand why the person she's kind of-sort of seeing stands to be around her. I assume the only reason she's still able to access the building despite all her warnings is because they're afraid she'll call a raid on them if they actually refuse her. Ramona very clearly goes in circles of: I like you. -> What will people think about me liking you? -> You're disgusting and horrible. -> I'm sorry, I won't do it again. -> I like you.

It's painful to read and I hope the cycle will break soon. Despite all her hypocracy she's clearly chosen the terf's side again and again - it's what she wants and she regards her chaser tendencies as a weakness. She's also getting a bit more violent every time she's down in the dums and I fear she's going to kill this partner of hers.

Beth might get sold into slavery. Robbie is informed about this and wants to learn more/stop this from happening but when he tells Fran she refuses to believe him. Fran is clearly caring more about herself and the fact that she's finally feeling comfortable rather than making sure her "friend" is ok. Currently it feels like Fran only cares about Beth as much as she's obligated to. If she could choose to stay with the top of the people in the bunker safe and secure for the rest of her life if Beth went away she'd probably choose it.

There seems to only be two decent characters in this book, Robbie and Indi. I don't count Beth since she's currently an abused and depressed blob floating around in the background.

Headcannons of random characters that I like:

-ramona wolf, if she signs the legendary book of leyends, will be a half wolf (but like, she would have wolf legs and a tail, it wont be a werewolf thing like her father).

- in wonderland everyone rejects gender and they are just what they are (example: the mad hatter wont be a man, would be a hatter. Like their gender is just their jobs/duties etc..) and all the wonderlandian squad would be, in some way, trans or non binary.

- apple white would have been short and fat, but everyone told her she had to be skinny and tall, so she started exercise routines to make herself taller and skinnier. She understands that being fat and being short is not a bad thing, bit she already has to deal with the "problem" of her hair, so she decide to change a bit (also because she wanted to be better in gim class).

- abby bominable is reeeally muscular and tall (i mean like +2,00 mt tall) and heath LOVES that, but he thinks its shameful of him to like a much muuuch taller and stronger woman than him, so at first he hid that. Then, when they started dating, he started praising her an telling her how much he loved that parts of herself.

-Deuce is a feminist. (I dont even think is a headcanon, its just straight canon).

-dexter charming is a transmasc guy that is really insecure of his masculinity when he`s talking to cis men and girls that he likes.

- Raven queen and the Evil Queen share the same music genre taste, but Raven avoids every band that her mother listened to, except Kiss and Queen...those are the ONLY ones.

- C.A. cupid is part of the destinies of every romantic tale in the school. She is the one that tries to make everyone fall in love with the one they re supposed to, but after going to Monster High and learning to love the diversity and uniqueness of people, she started to change things a little bit. For example, helping people realize what their trou hearts are saying they should do.

- Daring charming has a lot of insecurities about his looks and, overall, his teeth. Maybe he got caires when he was younger or something like that, but since that hes been really careful with his teeth.

headcanon: ramona flowers is a trans woman

one of my longest-standing headcanons (and tbh, one of my few headcanons) is that ramona flowers is a trans woman, mainly based on some textual evidence and a bit of trivia from bryan lee o’malley.

if you haven’t read the Scott Pilgrim series, you should know that it takes place in and around Toronto, which in-comic (and irl) has a thriving LGBT community; the likelihood that Ramona is trans is much higher in a place where LGBT people live much closer together and have an actual community. obviously, this is really weak evidence, as trans people can exist anywhere, and not every woman in an LGBT-friendly area is trans.

however, Ramona is described as having “burly man-arms” by Envy. obviously, she could just be Ripped, since she has to lug around a huge stone hammer (and envy could very well just have been being facetious), so this could absolutely be a moot point.

however, Ramona is also about 5′8-5′9, making her a little on the tall side for a woman. obviously, plenty of cis women are far taller than this (most cis women in my family are between 5′8 and 6′0), but on average, trans women tend to be taller than cis women (and although heights are “vague” according to O’Malley, the only woman consistently taller than Ramona is Envy.)

my biggest piece of evidence lies in Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour (the sixth and final volume), chapter 36, where this exchange happens. obviously it’s somewhat transphobic, but something i picked up on was this: if Ramona passed, people would have questioned Gideon calling Ramona a “prodigal son” (it’s an old saying), as opposed to whether Ramona was “a dude” or not.

(however, she’s still very attractive, just... apparently very androgynous despite presenting pretty overtly femininely.)

obviously, all of these things can be true of some cis women, but generally if she’s tall like other trans women, she’s in close proximity to other LGBT folks, and she gets clocked twice, she’s probably a trans woman.

Vanderpump Rules, Season 7, Recap #8

On Sunday morning, I experienced the kind of dopamine rush I only get from winning $8 on a Wheel of Fortune slot machine at a casino; I saw basically every housewife together in ONE ROOM to throw Andy Cohen a baby shower. Similarly to Stassi, I was having major FOMO. Unlike Stassi, I didn’t get to hang out with Dorinda Medley and Ramona Singer the next day. Wow, what I would give to have Ramona mispronounce my name. Since this joke fell on deaf ears to my Instagram followers, I figured I would repost my Shining/Real Housewives combo here to forever commemorate this historic and iconic moment.

Now onto something far less exciting, the new episode of Vanderpump Rules. What is going on this season? Is it that they’re just not partying enough? Too much about Jax and Brittany and James? I’m hoping that things will start picking up past this halfway point.

The episode starts at TomTom which doesn’t have water, electricity, food permits and a plush throne for Giggy ready for the DailyMail TV party. I don’t get why Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval are being kept away from the business that they invested in. But I get that they’re anxious to see their new bar and Lisa wants to do a big surprise. More on that later.

Scheana has moved to Marina Del Rey which Stassi deemed “geographically undesirable” - she’s right on the water, that seems nice… didn’t Trisha Paytas use to live in that dingy little apartment on the beach too? Anyway, a quick Google Map search and it takes an hour to drive 10 miles from West Hollywood to Marina Del Rey. That is kind of extreme, but Scheana needs to have a Trisha Paytas-style come up and start vlogging on her kitchen floor.

At Scheana’s party, Billie and Lala get into it about the “Girls Night In” Party. Billie never said that the SUR ladies were transphobic, but liking tweets wasn’t debunking those rumors either. Billie is truly upset about this, and as Ariana points out, Lala will not listen to her. Lala talks a big game of supporting other women, but not only does she fully embody cis-privilege, but she also just oozes abled-body, pretty, white woman privilege. Quite frankly, she just doesn’t get it. Again, I find that Ariana and Billie’s conversation is WAY MORE productive than back and forth arguing about being crazy and cis-privilege.

After seeing Lala “killing it”, Scheana has decided to get back into acting. One thing I hope to never see again is Scheana’s fake orgasm, but unfortunately, I think we’re going to see that scene a few more times throughout the season. Also, Adam… sweetie… yeah, she’s still faking it.

After being kept away like a greedy couple on “Fixer Upper”, Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz finally get to see TomTom. They are both blown away and Tom Sandoval is crying and REALLY… Really sweaty. If this was filmed around that INSANE heatwave in LA during the beginning of July, I get why he was so sweaty. I was there, it literally felt like I was about to light on fire.

The rest of this episode gets interesting. Tom Sandoval is at a bar taking “blowjob” shots with his friends (which look as gross as they sound) and the boys are talking about kids and marriage, as normal adults in would. No one is aligned on this subject, Brittany wants 3 kids, Jax wants 2, Tom Sandoval wants 2 kids, Ariana wants ZERO kids over her dead body. This is apparently a dealbreaker for Tom Sandoval, so we will see how this plays out during the rest of the season.

One thing that makes this show so special is that while so many of the situations and narratives are fabricated, these people hang out for real. So when “the boys” commiserated that their ladies had been with other women, Tom Sandoval felt the need to share with his friends that Lala and Ariana had hooked up. Of course, Jax tells Brittany, Tom Schwartz tells Katie who probably tells Stassi, who’s, naturally,  jealous that no lady wants to go down on her. Obviously, this story was not meant to stay a secret because it adds an interesting narrative to the show.

The other thing that makes this show so special is that within two episodes they have talked about a trans experience (through a limited scope, but I’ll take what I can get), bisexuality and sexual fluidity. What am I watching here? There are not many reality TV shows that talks openly about these topics and what’s so great about it are that these topics are normal and REAL. So kudos to Bravo and the cast of VPR for being so open to having these discussions on their show. Also, I don’t know if Ariana was genuinely mad at Tom for sharing this with his friends, but conversations like this are good and makes helps erase assumptions that everyone is fucking straight.

On a side note, Tom Schwartz has become my favorite character on this show and I hope that he keeps wearing muumuu’s and cheap wigs for years to come.

The episode ends at Jax and Tom’s rollerskating birthday party. The last time I roller skated, I beefed it so hard I basically had to crawl off the skate rink with a bum knee - so, I too was impressed that everyone seemed to be so good at rollerskating. James looked like his real self in that greasy wig and polyester shirt and so did Tom Sandoval.

Ultimately, the episode ended with apologies; Billie apologized to Katie for blasting her on the Internet (although I think Katie should have apologized as well) and Lala apologized to Raquel for calling her a “twat”. Now everything is peachy keen again for the Vanderpump Rules crew... FOR NOW.
