#pronoun positivity
Text
I started a new remote job last week, and I'm the only genderqueer person at the company (and the first person who uses neo pronouns that anyone on my team has ever met, apparently).
So far:
Manager carefully wrote down spelling and pronunciation of my pronouns and told everyone on the team to respect them.
Coworker apologized privately for misgendering me (I hadn't told her yet) and said she will practice.
Guy on another team valiantly tried to use my pronouns and ended up saying something like zirzs-zhizz (I DM'd him and thanked him for trying and linked him to a practice site).
Teammate told me he has written out my pronouns and how to use them in a sentence and literally taped it to his monitor so he can practice.
Teammate also referred to me as compañere after I linked to a comic about gender-neutral endings in Spanish (whole team except me + 1 other person speaks Spanish as first language and they held all meetings in Spanish before the two of us started).
I am so stoked that people are actually trying. 💜🤍💚

It/its pronouns are genuinely so cool because of the versatility in their connotation. Like “silly little gremlin creature” is a valid way of interpreting it but there’s also big things like mountains and valleys and ideas and energies and celestial beings and… The Horrors
Then sometimes it’s medium things that everyone just thinks are neat like- chair. And bouncy house.
It/its pronouns are so versatile in how they connote and what it means depends on the person and I think that’s awesome.

Jack: hey, you guys. I'm trying out new pronouns now. Can you use ey/em and fae/faer for me?
Bunnymund: new pronouns? What, did your old ones expire or somethin'?
Jack: sure did.
Bunnymund, joking: doesn't seem faery faer of you to suddenly change your pronouns out of nowhere.
Jack, unimpressed: ahahaha. Yeah. Ey em gonna beat you up if you don't use my correct pronouns from here on.

how did you decide to be out at your job?
Hi, Anon! Being out at work has been a long process for me. Here's a quick time line:
2012
Came out during my master's program (I have a master's in a mental health field). Gave a presentation in my master's diversity class about trans people and mental health.
2012
Did NOT come out at my internship during my master's program; it didn't feel safe.
2015
Started a new job at a college, lower-level worker. Not out yet. Wanted to test the waters.
2017
Came out at that job. Changed my legal name. Got my pronouns on my business card.

2019
Started a new job at at different college, high-level worker. Interviewed as out and told hiring person I'm genderqueer and my pronouns. New boss introduced me to the whole college with my correct pronouns. Pronouns on my business card.
Tumblr media
[ Image Description: Another photo of a different business card with all of the personal details redacted. Pronouns show (zie/hir/hirs) under the redacted name. Description Ends ]
2020
Started a new job at a non-profit. NOT out during the hiring process, but apparently one of my references used my correct pronouns (bc I didn't tell them not to), so my new boss was not surprised when I came out and shared my pronouns.
I don't have a pic of that business card, but my pronouns were on that card, too.
2022
Started a new job at a tech company -- this is the job referenced in this post (link). Fully out during the hiring process; pronouns were on my software dev portfolio right under the photo of myself. Hard to miss.
I don't have a business card because I'm completely remote and not customer facing anymore.
So I'm now on 5+ years of being out at work, including out with my neopronouns!
