I have this theory that Prince Levan and Yuu are similar.
Don't you think their traits so far matches? Kind, patient, able to traverse through adversities (for now its just raging Draconias lol), aspires to resolve conflicts between oppositions, doesn't possess any bias (maybe because they prefer peaceful options).
There is also a scene that matched well with what we know of Prince Levan with Yuu --
• Prince Levan dealing with Malenoa's tantrum safely -> Yuu telling Malleus to calm down and Malleus actually listening (during their trip kn GloMas)
• Prince Levan manages the foreign affairs of Land of Briar, he is negotiating to stop ravaging their land -> Yuu is assigned as the Prefect of NRC, they deal with the trouble ensuing in every dorm and striving to make its members work together.
Tumblr media
• Prince Levan is Malenoa's informant and seems to be on the frontlines while Malenoa's the strategist -> Yuu is always tasked as the record keepers or watcher of events (even in main story) by Crowley, and sometimes if there's actual trouble, Yuu tells Crowley about it, providing Crowley some stand-in in dealing with NRC troubles rather than himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• If we assume that all Draconias are similar, perhaps its safe to assume that Malenoa was also interested with Levan because he treated her normally (because like Malleus she was also revered too much and didnt experience much normality).
It mirrors similarly to the dynamic of Malleus and Yuu in the present, how Yuu is not afraid of him and in turn, makes Malleus feel like a normal person.
• Lilia mentions him, Malenoa, and Levan are childhood friends. So, it means that Levan and Malenoa probably met when they were children. Malleus is only 178 out of 1000 years adult age, Lilia stated him as a child. Plus, if we refer to the past ages of official Yuu's (Yuuken and Yuuka are 17), they are children -growing up as well. (At least I think so-- 17 is really young for me lol) Anyways, we see that Malleus and Yuu got to know each other in their developing years or something--
Tumblr media
• This is kind of a theory but Levan and Yuu have the traits of a beasttamer- Lilia states that Draconias are montrous (but they're still faes.) Yuu was dubbed as beasttamer by Crowley because of how they took care of Grim. Grim is a monster. And, both Yuu and Levan, like stated before, deals with "their monster's rages."
Tumblr media
• Both Malleus and Malenoa seems to get attracted by Levan and Yuu because of their compassion to them. (Malenoa views Levan as "he's the only one she can depend on" and he cooked for her so we can believe that Levan was kind to Malenoa.) In contrast, Draconias are always seen as "ruthless villains" "cruel" and "terrifying."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• As the game repeatedly tells us, Draconias exceeds so much from the average. They are seemingly evil, powerful and ruthless to people, even when Malleus was raised by Lilia to be "a gentle fairy" he struggles still. And, because of the normality/kindness of Yuu and Levan, that they are most interesting to Draconias. Since all those traits (being normal) are essentially their unknown and the impossible---
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• I think Draconias are also fascinated by the "weakness" and braveness of Yuu/Levan. (Levan was pitiful during the time where he, Lilia and Malenoa got lost while Malenoa just had a fun time out of it). Malleus teases Yuu about is he scary now since we always seem fearless to him- I wonder if Malenoa treated Levan this way as well... (because all Draconias seems to have same personalities lol i.e Malenoa has a habit of being talkative at unusual hours too much like how Malleus visits us to talk in the night)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• This is a reach, but Levan didn't get any silouette despite the fact he was explained many times by Lilia, just like how Yuu never gets revealed in game.
• The fact that Levan seems to be referenced from the two events: Glorious Masquerade and Halloween. These events have involved Yuu importantly instead of them just being on the sidelines-
Glorious Masquerade because it seems like he's Diablo-inspired and Malleus' outfit in that event has feathers of a raven. And, the fact Levan's Name is spelled like Raven. Plus, his outfit was designed to resemble royalty Briar Valley clothing and Levan IS a Briar Valley royalty (the princess' husband.)
Halloween Event because of Levan's title containing Long/Dragon Prince Levan. Malleus' Halloween costume was a Long/Chinese Dragon. Plus, the event highlighted the difference between Western and Eastern Dragon when Malleus info-dumped Vil about it so it holds significance that Eastern Dragons exists.
• There's also this parallel of Levan and Yuu being the one who goes and never returns. It seems that Malenoa sent Levan as her messenger to the Silver Owls to stop ravaging their land-- and now she is searching for him since he hasn't returned. Maybe we can assume Malenoa is regretting it because Levan's abscene is alarming that she is sending Lilia to find him. I think the act of "sending away" can be related to how Malleus accepted immediately that we're leaving to go back home despite his fear of losing us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, Malleyuu is generational OR In every Draconia heir there is a Yuu for them in the Yuuniverse population😂🐉🦐
Also, correct me if any of the info mentioned are amiss 😭 sometimes my mind just rolls and makes stuff up and I'm convinced it was real LOL
sorry if i didnt add sufficient screenshots, i didnt want to reach the photo limit lol and most of the things i mentioned about Malleus (for me) seems to be basic facts in the fandom so i thought it unnecessary.

main stories of pc-98 / touhou 1-5. basically what the wiki says but reworded since i cant understand some of it and i hate using wikis
please inform me if i got anything wrong!! since i used the wiki!!! and those are very incorrect sometimes!!!!!
touhou reiiden ~ highly responsive to prayers :
reimu hakurei is a shrine maiden. more specifically, she watches over the hakurei shrine. although she cannot harm her enemies directly, she wields a yin-yang orb that can deal damage. the shrine was wrecked by something idk
there is basically no story until stage 5, where you can follow the gate into hell or go to makai. she did destroy what wrecked her shrine. both have different enemies. depending on the ending, the yin-yang orb can turn into a fairy or something that destroys everything. for the bad ending, it turns into a black hole that destroys earth.
nearly none of the characters appear again except mima, who resides in the hokora near the hakurei shrine. a hokora is like a tiny shrine
touhou fuumaroku ~ the story of eastern wonderland :
reimu battles multiple creatures and machinery, some examples being the bakebake, shrine tank, and some cannons. she proceeds to run into rika, who tries to lure her into a trap. fortunately, both her and her flower tank were defeated. then, she finds meira, a samurai fixated on obtaining the power of hakurei (idk) for herself. reimu beats her and enters the world of fantasies, faces the five magic stones and defeats them.
after stage 3 it can be inferred that she entered reimaden, which is implied to be located inside the world of fantasies. mima or the final boss returns from hrtp, and she summons her apprentice marisa kirisame before either of the two can battle. (which fun fact marisa is red haired here!!!!) after defeating her, she faces mima herself. reimu explains the hakurei clans real power: the controlling of the yin-yang orbs. they feed off of the users power, and once fully loaded, can release lots of energy at once. mima was still defeated, and sealed back into the hokora despite all attempts to get it.
touhou yimejikuu ~ the phantasmagoria of dim dream :
yumemi and chiyuri create a space/time traveling ship called the probability space hypervessel and use it to travel to gensokyo so that yumemi can prove her theory
reimu wanders into the garden and realized theres a grand ruin near the hakurei shrine. mima and marisa reappear and mima explains it:
the ruins were accepting "visitors" and the people in charge would give gifts to them according to the pamphlet. there is a small notice that says only one person is allowed inside, and to figure out who should enter, they have a battle between rikako, kana anaberal, ellen and kotohime. whoever gets in first meets chiyuri and yumemi.
in order to prove her theory, yumemi wants to beat the player, take them to the real world, and perform experiments on her. if the player beats yumemi she can grant them a wish, as chiyuri's pamphlets had false information on them.
touhou gensoukyou ~ lotus land story :
first, they defeat orange, an ordinary youkai who was just flying around before arriving at a blood-filled lake. they then find a vampire named kurumi, who is the guardian of said lake, and they battle her twice. they find a chasm in an island at the center of the lake. which at the end of the passageway, there is a mansion called mugenkan. they find the gatekeeper elly, who explains that they are at the boundary of fantasy and reality.
she explains that the other character had defeated her already and entered the mansion. after defeating the
mansions housekeepers, they meet once again in a dark chamber in the center of the mansion. reimu accuses marisa of planning something nefarious, to which they both battle once again. whoever wins tells the other to leave before venturing farther into mugenkan. the remaining protag awakens a youkai, yuuka kazami, who despite her tiredness has very powerful attacks. yuuka panics and runs away after being defeated.
touhou kaikidan ~ mystic square
large amounts of youkai and demons are traveling from makai to gensokyo.
within the cave, whoever you chose as the player (reimu, marisa, mima, yuuka) finds the guardian of the gateway to makai, sara and defeats her easily before beginning a high-speed flight through the boundary between worlds. they find a demon travelling in the opposite direction named louise. the player arrives in makai, then soon being attacked by alice margatroid and her dolls.
after defeating her, the player flies toward a dark fortress in the distance, encountering themselves with the witches yuki and mai, who failed in attempting to stop the player from advancing forward.
entering the forest pandemonium, they fly through multiple crystal designs while battling even more enemies. at the top, they are greeted by shinki, who explains in a nice manner that the demon invasion is due to a civilian travel agency whomst arranged tours to gensokyo. before the player can figure this out or make any sense of it, they are interrupted by yumeko, who insists that she leave so she may battle them. after fighting the maid, shinki re-introduces herself. it turns out that she was in fact the god of makai, and alongside that, had created it.
re-stating what i said earlier: please tell me if i got anything wrong, missed any important details, etc.

Amber's word vomit for today
I much prefer villains which try to be good, rather than good people go evil
Like, I've seen lots of people saying "What if x character became EVIL, THEN EVERYONE'S DOOMED", kind of like, say, Marisa ends up being evil because she's jealous of Reimu, shoots Master Spark all over the place, etc etc
So alright, she does that, and that's pretty strong, but you know what feels more stronger for me? The fact that Marisa, despite feeling 'second-best' to Reimu, an ordinary human, decides to keep up with her and supports her best friend.
I could have Rirune snap and he'd be able to fully make his kitsune side go wild, and sure, he's much stronger than his normal, but you know where his real strength comes from?
His family and friends who supported him. Corny, I know, but fighting for them is much better than fighting for himself with very temporary goals.
Another canon example would be Yuuka, I believe. Can she go spread her nature outside Gensokyo? Absolutely. And then she goes crazy and just how powerful she is? Probably.
But you know what I like the best about her?
That despite her reputation, she chooses to be nice to the fairies who enter. Not entirely nice, but she has enough self-control to bring smiles to everyone else. That despite her reputation as an 'evil being', she chooses not to show it off, and be kind to others instead.
And that's much stronger than any other power, in my book.

Im not looking to write a novel worth of posts about this so lets just get through this real quick, a bunch of other reimu ship and relationships i didnt already cover in this post here, and my opinions on them:
Reimu/Suika: Like it a lot as a ship 😊🍺
Reimu/Eientei crew: friends with reisen, often annoyed with eirin and kaguya, and this is mostly based on the fact that theyre both red and white but... theres some interesting parallels to be had between reimu and mokou i think?!
Reimu/Aya: Also a lot of fun as a ship! 🐦‍⬛I admit a lot of reimu/youkai who intrudes on her shrine have somewhat interchangable dynamics, but theres just the littlest of nuaces that makes me appreciate each one differently...
Reimu/Yuuka: Yeah this is cute too! Honestly even though i dont reeeeally necessarily take pc98 lore into account (its a case by case basis for me), i do like the thought of yuuka having a 'history' with reimu, marisa and alice. ...even if reimu keeps forgetting people she hasnt seen in a while!
Reimu/Moriya Shrine folks: so Sanae is the obvious candidate for a bubbling rival kind of ship and i do like it as a friendly thing that can potentially become more intimate. Honestly i see reimu (and marisa) possibly taking on more of an unintentional mentor/senior role to sanae, and the actual target of reimu's ire in the rivalry between shrines is solely kanako!
Reimu/The other religuous groups: i think both byakuren and miko (and maybe most of their crews too) genuinely still believe they can one day recruit reimu onto their side 😅 but she's not having it!
Reimu/Kasen: eeeh, i do like their dynamic a lot and i can understand the appeal of it becoming more intimate, but i've never personally seen it like that myself. They're like family to me these days
Reimu/Akyuu: theres sooooo many really good and enticing parallels to be drawn betweem the hakurei shrine maiden and the child of miare, the expectations the duties the dread that all come with it, and how they find comfort in one another... Im into this one a lot! 😄
Reimu/Shinmyoumaru and Seija: im not actually invested in the actual romance of reimu and them but this is such a mess even before you take potential romantic feelings into consideration. web of complicated and conflicting feelings across all of them especially if you rope in Marisa too! 🤪
Reimu/Aunn: its like shipping a magical girl with her fairy mascot. Even if the mascot can take human form, its like... thats just a big talking teddy bear! You dont date one of those!
Reimu/...Misumaru? : unlikely but regardless of shipping, misumaru needs to appear more. She just showed up, dropped a bunch of lore and then left... Even Okina has been a little fleshed out since she did the same!
And probably a bunch of other stuff i could dedrege up from my mind on the spot but people can just ask me directly if they wish to hear my thoughts on reimu paired with random stage 2 boss.

hell yeah go for that explanation man, im curious now
Heheho [rubs hands together]
So basically in PoFV Eiki uses two very important words we need now: karma and the Japanese word 罪 (tsumi).
Karma has a western understanding that's less than desirable. In Buddhism there exists the term dukkha, it's usually translated as "suffering" but while all suffering is dukkha, not all of dukkha is suffering. It encompasses every grievance from the mild annoyance of being bitten by a bug to actual tragedies like the death of a loved one. Karma is the actions, emotions and other consequences dukkha has on living beings, which is also undeniably unpleasant, but it's not evil, nor does it make you dirty (in fact no matter how much you have, you can cleanse yourself from it). Karma makes you fall to Hell NOT because you're evil. If you're a good person but you let your grief or trauma fester within you and thus it causes you to go dark places, that is what causes you to fall to Hell.
This doesn't even happen as a punishment. The people who fall to hell have suffered so much and they're so unable to improve themselves because of their irreparably damaging mindsets that they'll need to be cleansed of it. This process takes place in Hell and is the most suffering one can go through.
Tsumi is a Shinto term, not Buddhist, but it's very very similar to karma (there's a difference but for this conversation they'll be used as synonyms). This word, tsumi, is translated in touhou (and many other places) as sin. And I'm not saying that it cannot under any circumstances mean sin, because it can but certainly not in this context. In English the closest word to it is (emotional) baggage or (emotional) burden, maybe if someone has a lot of dukkha, they’re “troubled”.
And when you translate it as sin in this context though it severely changes the meaning of Eiki’s words.
-
The official translation:
"Living is that much of a sin. That's right, you've lived a little too long. If you continue living on like this, nothing good will come of it.“
“But if I see a fairy deep in sin, I can't simply leave her alone.“
“If I were in charge of judging you, you have sinned.”
“You may be intending to investigate an incident, but you yourself are causing one. If the sins of events you've caused are included with your own sins, you will most likely fall to hell.”
-
Using baggage or burden:
"Living is that much of a burden to bear. That's right, you've lived a little too long. If you continue living on like this, nothing good will come of it.“
“But if I see deeply troubled fairy, I can't simply leave her alone.“
“If I were in charge of judging you, you’re in great trouble.”
“You may be intending to investigate an incident, but you yourself are causing one. If the grievances of the events you've caused are included with your own baggage, you will most likely fall to hell.”
.
Like do you see how much the tone changes? English Eiki very much sounds like a conservative pastor in comparison.
She’s telling Yuuka that her long life also came with a lot of bigger and smaller grievances and that probably caused her to become like this. Cirno is pursuing something that would make her mortal because of her unsatisfaction with the life she currently has (unsatisfaction also a form of dukkha). Reimu is having a lot of baggage because she has a lot of responsibilities to fulfill that she never asked for. And finally, Aya is causing dukkha with her articles which probably stems from her own personal dukkha and those two together add up to her having a lot of karma.
And like. listen. I clown a lot on the games’ translations, I know. But this is a very substantial change and it very much added to why Eiki is percieved the way she is in fanon.

Prompt 4: Flower Power
Today’s prompt is flower power. Gensokyo is full of flowers, be they wielded by fairies, jealously guarded by Yuuka or turned into a tank. Are they powerful? Probably.

Looking At the Results of the 18th Touhou Popularity Poll
Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Flandre is at #1 this year.
It’s probably not a coincidence that this happened on the 20th Anniversary of Touhou 6. Interestingly enough, Youmu had the highest number of first place votes (she has barely more than Flandre, and has a lot more than Reimu). She still placed fourth.
The Unconnected Marketeers in their second poll:
Chimata (52), Tsukasa (57), Megumu (61), Momoyo (83), Mike (106), Takane (122), Misumaru (123), Sannyo (143)
Each character dropped a few places from last time, but the general order is the same. Only Takane and Misumaru switched places.
Highest ranked characters per game:
The highest ranking characters per Windows game: were Flandre (1), Youmu (4), Mokou (8), Aya (12), Sanae (14), Koishi (6), Kogasa (25), Miko (27), Seija (32), Junko (28), Okina (43), Keiki (51) and Chimata (52).
You can see that, except for Koishi and Junko, there’s a decline.
The highest ranking characters per PC-98 games (not including Reimu, Marisa, Alice and Yuuka) were: Sariel (129), Mima (75), Yumemi (100), Gengetsu (113), Shinki (90)
New Characters:
Toutetsu debuted at 53. Not too bad, final bosses tend to debut at the 40-50 mark.
Mizuchi debuted at 138. Ouch. Not only is she the least popular (important) character from a print work, but she’s right in the range of the “least popular Windows characters”
Speaking of, the bottom five Windows characters for this year’s poll were:
Kisume at 131
Eika at 134
Urumi at 140
Nemuno at 142
Sannyo at 143
Last year’s bottom five was fairly similar (Narumi, Nemuno, Kisume, Sannyo and Eika. The only change was ordering and Narumi avoiding the bottom five this year). Sannyo’s placement is noteworthy because, unlike the other characters, she actually got a spotlight chapter in Lotus Eaters.
Looking at the stats, it seems like the number of Sannyo fans didn’t change: she had 10 first place votes in both polls, and her score is at around 170 in both. Her appearance in Lotus Eaters just didn’t bring in any new fans
Other Stats:
Ichirin continues to be the least popular Windows character (who is also playable in the official games) at 114
18 of the Top 20 characters have been playable in the official games. The only characters who AREN’T are Satori (at 9) and Rumia (at 17)
Kikuri (from Touhou 1) is the least popular boss. She is ranked at 176 and is lower than the Catfish (from Hisoutensoku), the UFOs from Touhou 12 and the generic Fairy enemies.
Fortune Teller actually jumped five places (to 104)
Otter Spirit is the most “popular” Animal Spirit from Touhou 17 by far. It is placed at 148, while Wolf is at 177 and Eagle is at 183)
Shinki (90) and Yorihime (91) got stuck in an Aki Sandwich this year.

There is something that has always bugged me about the assumption that Deliora's attacks happened somewhere that was not Fiore. Key being that four minors, under the age of ten, were able to get to Fiore without much hassle (?). Those minors are Gray, Sherry, Tobi and Yuuka who all wind up in Fiorean guilds. I know that there is a Gray-centric manga that explores his journey, but really? We are supposed to believe that he crossed several countries without any serious intervention from a responsible adult who says "wait, it's kinda screwed up that a kid travels this far!" I know that no one really seems to care about orphans in this manga and does not mind them being raised in questionable circumstances and places (like a guild that pretty much doubles as a bar), but Gray being able to travel that far seems like a stretch even by the logic of the manga.
It is also strange to me that a non-Fiorean Gray would have known about Makarov/Fairy Tail to the extent that he would place his entire hope (remember, he initially goes to the guild to ask Makarov to undo Iced Shell) on a faraway wizard. Sure, Makarov is a wizard saint and likely famous. However, we have since come to learn that there is a ranking among the Saints which might explain it beyond the obvious answer (Gray needed to have heard about the guild and its master so that he could go to Magnolia and join the guild). There are just two issues: a. Makarov does not rank particularly high, able to be fifth spot at most and b. Makarov is not a dedicated ice magic user. If he was famously an ice user, it could be overlooked and even called logical—Gray would of course seek out another powerful ice user for answers.
However, due to what has already been outlined, this logic does not track. It simply does not exist.
Disbelief might be suspended if there was any main story mention of Gray having sought out more local mages that specialise in ice magic and that going to Makarov was a desperate last ditch effort, but there is nothing in the story that would convey the emotional distress of Makarov being the last resort. It is also just a touch strange that after travelling, allegedly, across continents and countries alike, Gray would just go 'oh okay' when a non-ice user tells him that undoing Iced Shell is impossible. Sure, Makarov is a wizard saint, but what exactly is his qualification to make a definite statement about Iced Shell? The only people we have ever seen use or try to use the spell are Ur and her students, adding to my theory that Ur created Iced Shell. Due to the circumstances, it would make more sense for Gray to take Makarov's word for it if he had not just vaguely heard of Makarov's magical prowess but if he had grown up in an environment where Makarov had been discussed more frequently.
So, here is a proposed and hopefully more logical sound explanation: like almost anything else in the manga, Deliora's attacks happened in Fiore. Probably along the border to Bosco which would account for a few things. The location where Deliora met its end is called Brago. The only thing really known about Brago is that it is not on the map that was shown at one point, early on. (It is also known that Mashima only really planned out Fiore and that the surrounding countries are just there to fill in the spot. Which is fine.) It is also supposedly in 'Isvan'. We later (much later) learn that the continent that Fiore is on is called Ishgar.
This following point is a bit of a stretch and admittedly based on my experience with FMA where the same location was called both Ishval and Ishbal, depending which FMA adaptation is considered, and Ishbar in the German Translation, but I think that those two places---Isvan and Ishgar---are the same thing which allows me to proceed without further ado, especially that all we know about Isvan is derived from one sentence Ur said---that there are more powerful mages west of her location---which seems to indicate that the location is in the east. If we assume that what Isvan equals Ishgar, then what she might have meant is that more powerful mages can be found in the more densely populated areas of Fiore where the guilds are.
One could spitefully say that this is supported by the fact that in the war that, according to canon, hit the entire continent, only Fiorean mages did anything remarkable that was worth any screentime.
Also---if Gray is from Fiore, a lot of plotholes close or are not even opened to begin with.
Note: I generally assume that most canon events take place in Fiore due to the aforementioned fact that pretty much every other place is terribly underdeveloped and I would hope that Mashima would have at least some idea about the place one of his main characters is from. (This does include my belief that the Magic Council is a Fiorean organisation that deals with Fiorean mages since otherwise, I envision it to be one gigantic mess as it is more or less canon that the Royal Family does not really have much to say about the mages living and working in Fiore. Which, uh, sure is a narrative choice that absolutely does not create messy legal situations!)
Why did he know about Fairy Tail/Makarov? Insert any explanation, ranging from a Fairy Tail mage having done work in his hometown prior to Deliora to Gray having read about them in the newspaper. Again: Makarov is a wizard saint. So is Jose Porla, of course, but to a child, Fairy Tail has to sound more appealing than Phantom Lord. And those two are the only wizard saints that are easily accessible to a child as they are guild masters and guilds (at least Fairy Tail) appear to be public spaces that can be entered by non-members.
To refer back to the earlier thought: that Gray might have heard of Makarov before. This really is not a stretch. Makarov is of course not going to show up in any publications like the Mage I Want To Be My Boyfriend ranking the way (I'm fairly sure) Siegrain did, but there is a canon interview that the Sorcerer Weekly magazine conducted with the entire guild. To think that Gray would have had access to newspaper articles or other publications does not seem like much of a stretch---he was born a mage, after all, and why would his parents keep him about information about other mages?
Why did he speak the Fiorean language? Well, he is from Fiore. It is generally doubtful if there are even multiple actively spoken languages in Earthland due to the fact that no matter where the characters go (and that includes a Mirror World), they can be understood and they understand others. The only character speaking a different language is Minerva when she calls upon the God of War. Then there is the script Freed uses for his magic, but I cannot recall if he or somebody else ever reads the script out loud.
A lot about Deliora, actually. The entire Deliora Plot that is witnessed during the actual manga also unfolds in Fiore. We can assume that Sherry's magic played a big role in getting Deliora to Galuna Island for the Moondrip Ritual, but even with that in mind, the entire story unfolds much smoother if Deliora was already somewhat in the vicinity of the island when Lyon started his plan.
His silence about his backstory. In a previous headcanon I said that one of the reasons why Gray and Natsu clashed as children was the very different way they dealt with their respective trauma. Natsu copes by telling everyone about Igneel---perhaps because saying it again and again helps him feel reassured that it was real, that despite what some adults say, it did happen. Gray copes by bottling his trauma about the deaths of his parents and Ur's sacrifice up. He cannot talk about it. He feels guilty* about his role in it. Makarov obviously has to know about where Gray is from and what the kid went through as Gray would have had to tell him in order to ask for help. I think Gray's silence becomes a lot more impactful and interesting if Deliora did happen in Fiore. If people around him know about the demon and heard the whispers about the end it met. If for ten years, Gray stewed in the knowledge that his choices spelled the end for someone who is now revered as a hero. As a saint.
* This guilt is obviously not healthy and it is undeserved. Gray should not feel guilty as it was not actually his fault but more or less a chain of events that, once triggered, could only lead to a bad outcome, but if guilt was rational, then there would be much less angst. Likewise, if anyone in this manga would seek the help of a therapist, then they might actually be well-adjusted.

Starlight Dream - Chapter 38
“What have you done?” Seina said, reaching out to the spot Kindness once occupied. While she’d been a monster, the fairy hadn’t deserved obliteration.
“Whose next in line for the slaughter?” Yuuka asked, her victim already forgotten. Much to Seina’s dread, the fairy's destruction hadn’t affected the mad magical girl. It hadn’t stolen her powers as expected. No, Yuuka seemed as strong as ever.
The villain’s statement returned Seina to the here and now, reminding her feeling sorrow for Kindness’s loss wasn’t a luxury she could afford right now. She gripped her wand tight, ready to put down Yuuka if required. It’d probably be a mercy.
If we survive. They were facing a fully powered Devil Princess, a truly insurmountable foe. Seina quavered, knowing what little chance they stood.
And their opponent seemed beyond reasoning, attacking like a wild animal, free of any skill or reason. Her talon-like fingers slashed towards the nearest magical girl, Miko yelping in fright as they almost clawed her face. Yuuka continued with a follow-up but slipped away as Seina’s staff flew toward her chest.
“Takako!” Seina said, summoning countless bubbles around her. They flew in every which direction, confusing the Devil Princess as they blew past her.
“Right!” Takako spun around her ribbon, gathering a collection of Seina’s bubbles within it. Each bubble vanished, only to appear randomly around the field.
“You!” Yuuka said, howling in pain as her back bumped into a bubble. It burst apart, the force sending the Devil Princess flying.
The others used this as an opportunity to strike, Chō sent her dwindling robot forces forward. They fell to Yuuka’s claws, but some clung to the Devil Princess, pushing her into another exploding bubble. But the explosion had no effect, its flames passing over their intended target like a gentle rain.
“Stole it! Stole it!” Yuuka said, proud of herself. Ume attempted an attack from behind, but howled in pain as the Devil Princess threw a robot into her. Bone shattered into splinters as Yuuka threw a fist into her chest, Ume collapsed unmoving.
Both Emiyo and Paliah attacked from opposite directions. While futile, Miko scored some lucky hits while the Devil Princess was distracted. Annoyed, Yuuka vented her fury. Clawed fingers dug into Miko’s chest, Seina watching in abject horror as the Devil Princess ripped out the girl’s heart with her bare hands.
“Miko!” Emiyo said, eyes wide in horror as the Yuuka crushed it with her palm like an overripe fruit. Blood seeped into her fingers, staining them crimson.
Seina blew another exploding bubble towards their foe, only for it to have no effect again. Still, it proved the perfect distraction for her partner to slip away.
“What now?” Seina said, despairing as Yuuka kicked Miko’s still body like a hacky sack before throwing it aside. It twitched, proving the girl still lived. How were they to fight this monster?
“I’m not sure,” Takako said, seeing they’d already lost two of their most valuable allies.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Himari said, her bracelet jingling as she thrust a hand forward. But her dimensional crush had no effect. The Devil Princess already knew about that ability.
“Kill! Kill! Kill!” Yuuka said, her tone singsong. Poor Himari quavered. She wasn’t a fighter, like her allies. “Tear you to shreds!”
Some robots used this distraction as an opportunity to strike, only to explode into dust before their blows even connected. Chō scribbled in her notebook, trying to create something that might change the tide. But a sudden blow to the head knocked her senseless, knocking her out from the fight.
Seina kept their opponent distracted, knowing she could best take a hit. Trusty Paliah fought by her side, his blade swift as he displaced himself along time to make himself difficult to track. But each of his sword thrusts had their momentum stolen, even while attacking her blind spot. Emiyo joined the fray, but her sickle proved just as useless. Seina’s bubbles proved little better, their destructive power nullified before they inflicted any damage.
It’s useless. She can stop anything we throw at her.
“Emiyo, watch out!” But Seina's warning came too late, Yuuka swatting Emiyo aside with ease as she attempted a sneak attack. She crumbled like a discarded toy, bone shattered into dust.
No. The girl still breathed, but only just. The mad magical girl was tearing them apart piecemeal, and there wasn’t any way to stop her.
If only we could stop her from stealing our attacks. Seina had hoped that destroying her belt would have thrown all the damage she’d stopped back at her, but apparently, that wasn’t how her power worked.
Ugh, if only… Then, inspiration struck, making Seina feel like an idiot. “Cover me!”
“Okay, sure.” Paliah said, beaming. As usual, the fairy has too much confidence in his partner’s ability.
“Um, I’ll do my best,” Himari said, giving a weak smile.
With a flourish of her wand, Seina summoned bubbles across the battlefield. Her friends used them as cover, Takako striking with random beams of energy and Paliah with his sword. Yuuka ignored the attacks, charging toward the nearest opponent. The Devil Princess flew right through one of Seina’s bubbles, headless of the damage it might cause. Her hands extended like talons, reaching for Takako’s still-beating heart. This, however, proved a mistake. The Devil Princess howled in pain as trillions of jolts of electricity coursed through her system.
Yuuka’s body jerked, her muscles seizing up. Paliah used this chance to strike, but his blade had little effect. It bounced back from her skin, only leaving a scratch. Takako’s efforts were a little more successful, her ribbon leaving deep gashes in her skin. Neither, however, seemed powerful enough to inflict much damage.
“Pointless! Pointless! Pointless!” Yuuka said, already recovering from the unexpected attack.
But Seina ignored these taunts, directing Takako to throw more bubbles at their opponent. Her friend only shrugged, summoning a whirlwind to throw them at their opponent. But Yuuka was impossibly fast, slipping by them with ease. But she hadn’t accounted for Paliah.
Like a madman, he used his own body to knock the Devil Princess off course into another bubble. Yuuka seemed unconcerned until hundreds of times below absolute zero struck her as the bubble burst, glimmering with a blue coat as her body froze. It hadn’t been the electricity she’d been expecting. If Seina kept her bubble’s effects random, the Devil Princess couldn’t so easily steal their effects.
Seina took advantage of her helpless opponent, striking a blow right into Yuuka’s gut. The bottom half of the Devil Princess’s body shattered to dust as her frozen skin exploded. Yet, the Devil Princess recovered seconds later, the wound already healing as her body defrosted.
“Come on!” Takako said, annoyed.
“Nice try!” Spittle flew from Yuuka’s mouth as she cackled from delight, unbothered by this newest attempt to defeat her. Seina flinched as a punch flew towards her face, not quick enough to dodge it.
“Ouch,” Seina said, her skull ringing painfully. It hurt badly, but the Devil Princess blinked, confused by something. “She can really throw a punch.”
“Watch out,” Himari said, using her body to block the next blow. Seina watched in horror as she assumed her friend had sacrificed herself for her sake, but the blow did nothing despite taking a clean hit.
“What the?” Yuuka said, baffled. Takako used the distraction to hurl more of Seina’s bubbles toward their opponent. She screamed as intense fire and gravity consumed her.
“How did you do that, Himari?” Seina whispered.
“Oh, that. I can alter my being to be higher than three dimensions. That means nothing on this plane of existence can really hurt me. Though I doubt Yuuka will allow that trick to work again.” Himari replied.
“You can do that?” Seina said, shocked. How did that make any sense?
“My power allows me to adapt to any dimension, from one to eight thousand.”
“Nope, still didn’t get a word of that,” Seina admitted. She flinched as Yuuka hurled her talon-like claws toward her chest, aiming to repeat what she’d done to Emiyo. Much to Seina’s relief, it only tore skin. It still hurt, but at least she hadn’t lost her heart. Seina responded with a headbutt to the face, making the Devil Princess recoil back.
“What’s going on?!” Yuuka screamed. “Why aren’t you dead?”
What was going on? Was it her imagination, or was the Devil Princess getting weaker? Had the loss of her fairy partner finally taken effect?
“It’s more than that,” Ume said, limping towards them. “Tell me, Yuuka, are you surprised you haven’t slaughtered us all yet? By all accounts, we shouldn’t have been even able to hurt you.”
“What? What? How? How? Not possible! Devil Princess’s invincible!” Yuuka replied.
“Being trapped in that higher existence for eons drained your power. There wasn’t any suffering to feed off of. While you’re still ungodly powerful, you’re crippled.” Ume said, smiling with some satisfaction.
So that was Ume’s plan.
“Never mind, you die! You all die!” Yuuka cried, enraged past reason.
Unfortunately for Seina, the Devil Princess picked her as her target of ire. Seina fought back with her bubbles, but Yuuka kept coming, no matter what damage Seina inflicted on her.
The others tried to help, but the Devil Princess was on a mission. Their blows meant little as she either shrugged them off or stopped their damage from hurting her. Only Takako seemed to have any effect, using her power of imagination to throw anything and everything at their opponent.
Even with her powers failing, she’s this powerful? Seina gasped as claw-like fingers wrapped around her throat, tightening like a python. Yuuka didn’t bother stealing Seina’s ability to move, instead taking delight in her frantic, failing attempts to free herself.
Despite inflicting blows that would have crumpled a normal magical girl, Yuuka only shrugged them off. Seina’s wailing strikes lost their power as the Devil Princess strangled the life from her. Blood oozed from where Yuuka’s nails dug into Seina’s flesh. The grip tightened, aiming not to choke her to death but to pop her head off.
“No, Seina!” Paliah stabbed into the Devil Princess’s back, but his blade only left slight nicks in her flesh. He wailed harder, screaming for Yuuka to release his partner. Tears stung his eyes as his attempts became more and more futile.
“Seina.” Paliah’s body sagged on the smaller girl’s body, almost reduced to sobbing.
No, not like this! She didn’t want this to be her last sight of her best friend!
“No, not yet.” The Devil Princess’s face contorted as she fought some inner battle, her grip weakening somewhat. “What’s happening? I can’t be getting…”
Wait, is that why she still has her powers? She’s holding them together with pure willpower? Then, a brilliant idea struck Seina.
“Kindness.” That single word was the only thing she could force through her constricted throat, but her ever-faithful partner caught her meaning.
“Takako, can you remind her of what happened to her partner?” Paliah asked, swinging around towards their only salvation.
The girl paused before giving a coy smile. “Easy enough.”
“Like I could forget,” Takako added, her tone becoming somber. Her ribbon lashed out and tapped the Devil Princess’s forehead.
The girl jerked like someone had slapped her and released her grip. Her mad exaltation at killing Seina turned to horror and confusion. Seina took several grateful breaths, glad to be free. Except for some ugly bruising, she seemed otherwise alright.
“No! No!” The Devil Princess grabbed at her head, flinging her body around in random directions. “It can’t be!”
“I’m sorry, but it’s true. The fairy you destroyed was your own partner.” Seina said, showing surprising kindness.
“No!” Yuuka’s body heaved. Her slight body seemed to deflate, her skin thin on her frame. Was it Seina’s imagination, or had the girl gained some years?
“It’s a lie! It must be a lie!” Yuuka’s head swung wildly, searching for her partner. “Kindness! Where are you? I need you!”
The Devil Princess kept searching and searching, zipping behind buildings and peering into alleys. But Yuuka's search was in vain, fighting back a sob as she searched. Meanwhile, her body paid the price, becoming more skeletal and aged. Each second was sapping her immortality. Seina pursued along a tricky journey as Yuuka darted across the globe.
“Kindness! Please come back to me! I need you!” Yuuka said, tears burning her eyes. “Don’t leave me alone!” But, of course, her pleas fell on deaf ears.
“You! You did this!” The Devil Princess pointed an accusatory finger at Seina. “You! You!”
“Yuuka, please, enough.” Seina said. “Fighting me won’t help anything. I’m sorry, but Kindness is gone.”
“No! It will! And you'll burn in hell with the rest of us!” Without warning, Seina found a hand slashing toward her.
“Seina!”
Seina watched in horror as Ume almost got sliced in half as she intercepted the blow, creating a mess that made Seina ill. The Devil Princess whirled around to strike Seina next, but a body grabbed her from behind to halt her. Blood stained the Devil Princess’s dress as she tried fighting off Ume.
“You idiot, what are you doing?” Seina snarled.
“I’m useless. You’re the only one who can finish this.” Ume said, her smile weak. “If it means stopping this monster, I’m willing to pay any cost.”
“Then pay!” Yuuka howled.
Then Seina watched in stunned horror as the Devil Princess’s talon-like fingers split Ume’s torso in half. Little remained of the girl but a head and part of her right shoulder, Ume’s body leaving pools of crimson as it rolled across the broken pavement.
“No!” Seina didnt think, only acted. She wouldn’t allow this monster to hurt anyone else, no matter how pitiful or broken she might be. Her wand flew towards the Devil Princess’s head with all the force she could muster.
Yuuka only smirked, thinking she'd only steal the attack’s momentum again. But Seina had prepared for this, sending a kick into the Devil Princess’s belt before her attack struck home. The gem the Devil Princess tried to use to steal Seina’s attack shattered, and Yuuka felt the full fury of Seina’s sorrow.
Bone shattered as the Devil Princess’s power faltered, unable to withstand the blow. After Yuuka landed in a crater in a heap, Seina threw thousands of bubbles against her foe, each with a random effect. Seina breathed hard after ceasing her attack, the devastation she’d left across the countryside was terrible.
“No!” came a weak cry. Yuuka wasn’t dead, crawling like a worm across broken earth as she refused to die. Her body had become skeletal as she pulled herself from the crater, her skin like dried meat. Nothing remained of her hair besides a few strings of white.
“You’re finished,” Seina said, tears flowing freely for her fallen friend. They’d had their differences, but they’d been allies.
“Never.” Yuuka’s voice was barely a croak, almost inaudible. Somehow she forced herself back to her feet again, though she resembled a walking corpse rather than a magical girl.
But then the Devil Princess collapsed, spider web cracks appearing along her body as it struck the ground. “Kindness. Kindn…” Then, like she’d never even existed, Yuuka’s body dissolved into dust and scattered to the winds. They’d done it. They’d somehow won.
“Ume!” Seina said, forgetting about any victory celebration.
“Here.” A weak voice said from behind a scrub bush.
“Hang on, I’ll get you to Takako, and you’ll be okay!” Seina’s tears dripped onto her friend’s forehead.
“Unlikely,” Ume said, giving a weak laugh.
“No!”
“It’s okay. Please don’t cry for me. I hate crying.” Ume placed a bloody hand on Seina’s cheek. “I’m just glad I was here to help.”
“You idiot! I could have taken the hit,” Seina said, incensed her friend was accepting her death so lightly.
“I couldn’t risk it,” Ume said, coughing. “The cosmos needs you more than me. I’m too much of a sinner.”
“Don’t say that!”
“I’m such a failure.” Ume looked away. “Unable to live up to Hinata’s standards. She’d never stand what I’d become. I sure don’t.”
“You wrong! You’re wonderful! We still need you!” Seina said, her words broken by sobs.
“Thank you,” Ume said. “You believed in me when I didn’t. I didn’t deserve your…” Her words trailed off, and her body went cold.
“Ume!” Seina hugged her friend’s body tight, unleashing her anguish.
---
“Darn it,” Miko said, pulling herself into an alley. Crimson strained the trash-ridden ground as the gaping hole in her chest bled something fierce. Without their heart, magical girls’ powers operated less effectively.
She watched as Yuuka went on a manic rampage, searching for her dead partner before vanishing. Well, whatever. That was Seina’s problem now. Miko was content to sit here until she recovered. Her breathing eased as her wounds healed.
A jolt of fear passed over Miko as a shadow was cast over her, but relaxed when she only found her partner Jin floating above her.
“Oh, it’s you,” Miko said, her tone neutral.
“That’s right. I see you’ve survived against a Devil Princess. Not an easy thing.” Jin replied, her tone similar.
“Yeah, I did,” Miko said, beaming with pride. It was an impressive feat for someone who was only an intendant. An awkward silence hung between them as neither really wanted to speak to the other, but Miko finally broke it.
“Why Jin? Why turn against Starlight Dream? Wasn’t I good enough for you?” Miko had only been kind to her partner, rarely even raising her voice at her. It was unconscionable that Jin would betray her.
“Some fairy had to,” Jin said, contempt leaking into her voice. “The way the Princess’s run Starlight Dream isn’t right. It should be better. Fairykind shouldn’t be used as slaves to hurt others!”
“So you choose suicide? Yeah, people die, but people always die. Nothing can fight against Starlight Dream, no matter what we think. Fighting against it is pointless.” Hadn’t her last battle proven this?
“That’s why I’ve always despised you, too. And why I must do this.”
Miko gasped as her partner produced a kunai knife, aiming right at Miko’s barely healed heart. “What are you doing?”
“If Colten can do it, so can I!” Jin said, her grim malevolent. “Only I’m not taking only a few sips of blood. I’m eating the whole thing!”
“Wait!” But Miko cried out in pain as her partner struck with impossible precision, hitting right where it would incapacitate Miko the most. Damn, she must have tapped into her partner’s special power. Miko howled again as Jin stabbed several more times, taking advantage of her partner’s weakened state.
“Don’t do this!” Miko pleaded for her partner to stop. “Please, I still love you!”. But these pleas fell on deaf ears. Darkness consumed Miko as she struggled against each fatal blow thrown against her. Then, after seeing that Miko couldn’t fight back any longer, Jin began the feast.

Gensokyo Festival Day 26: Nature
"Okay..." Reimu said, staring as the green sprouts growing out of her futon shot upwards in curling tendrils. "This is new."
She threw the cover off just as the plants began to flower and hurried to get dressed. She was busy tying her hair ribbon in place when she finally paused and looked at her clothes.
She was relatively sure her sleeves hadn't had a trim of lily-of-the-valley blossoms when she had folded them away for the night. Nor had her shirt smelled suspiciously like wisterias.
A fairy prank, she thought as she moved on to grab her weapons. Most likely one by several fairies working in concert, based on the strength of the effect.
Her hand came to a halt mid-air. Her gohei had decided that it was, in fact, not a gohei, but a living branch of a cherry tree. It had also decided that it was spring.
After a moment's hesitation, she grabbed it and ran outside. "Yuuka! I know you're here somewhere, so you may as well show yourself before I come over and kick—"
She halted as soon as she made it onto the porch. Yuuka was sitting right by the door with her eyes closed and her head resting against the wall. All around her, dandelions and sprigs of lavenders bloomed out of the woodwork.
Before Reimu had time to yell to wake her up, Yuuka stirred. The soft glow of her red eyes alighted on Reimu. "Good morning. I thought I would come here to pay my respects."
Wordlessly, Reimu thrust her sakura-strewn ex-gohei forward.
"Ah." Yuuka observed the pale pink blossoms with some mild curiosity, then slowly turned to look at the impromptu flowerbed surrounding her. "My power must have seeped into the structure of the shrine while I was asleep. Quite unusual."
"Try unnatural." As Reimu looked around, more and more shoots began  bursting through the narrow cracks between the boards. It was undoubtedly the beginning of an incident, but her instinct whispered that Yuuka was not to blame. Which was probably a good thing, all things considered, but it did mean she had a busy day ahead of her.
"And what could be more natural for Gensokyo than that?" Yuuka closed her eyes and rested her head back where it had been, smiling all the while. "They will wilt on their own. By the time the season ends, at the very least."
Reimu groaned as her hair decorations bloomed into roses.

Aaand how about Azami and Yuuka?
if they had a kid.
Tumblr media
Name: Shion Kazami
Gender: Female
General Appearance: Pink hair, red eyes, rather short. She's still taller than Azami. She's got a very soft face and skin, but she certainly grows into a more mature look than an average fairy would. Since fairies don't grow. Anyways, she has wings, and their appearance are reminiscent of a bee's. They're clear with a tint of pink coloring them.
Personality: Shion is a sickly sweet girl who enjoys attention and being liked. She's actually quite socially adept, although she lays on the sweetness a bit thickly sometimes. She can also be a tease.
She likes flowers enough, but she doesn't actually have as strong of a connection to them as her parents. In an odd twist, she's also sensitive to pollen and dust.
Special Talents: Her upbringing left her with a vast repository of trivia and knowledge about plants. She's great at gardening, baking, social manipulation, and designing spell cards as well.
Who they like better: Azami, but she respects Yuuka more. She likes them both.
Who they take after more: Both, but probably Yuuka a little more.
Personal Headcanon: Not born fully as a fairy or a proper youkai, Shion is an odd hybrid of the two, which can be a bit confusing. She's stronger and looks more mature than a fairy, but her strength is still only along the lines of a weak youkai, currently. Also, she was born with a rather weak constitution, and she has to eat to live. She doesn't seem to take a lot of physical traits from her fairy side.
Face Claim: Satou Matsuzaka from Happy Sugar Life!

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense: Pages 45-47 - Yuuka Kazami
Flower Master of the Four Seasons
Yuuka Kazami
Tumblr media
Ability: Manipulation of flowers
Threat level: Very high
Human friendship level: Worst
Main place of activity: Garden of the Sun
She lives surrounded by flowers all year round, and if anyone disturbs her, be they youkai or human, she eliminates them with tremendous power no matter what.
She's more like a manifestation of nature rather than a flower youkai, but unlike fairies, she is far more dangerous than any of the youkai introduced so far.
She is usually active in places surrounded by flowers, and seems peaceful at first glance but is merciless towards other creatures.
She wears bright clothes, and her appearance is no different from a human.
The ability to manipulate flowers is something to the extent being able to make flowers bloom, shift the face of sunflowers towards the sun, or make withered flowers bloom again.
This ability is more of an extra; she truly possesses extremely high youkai power and physical abilities. A youkai-like youkai.
She doesn't feel an atom of fear when fighting humans or youkai, and loves rubbing people the wrong way.
As youkai live longer, they become less active.
There are few that take the initiative to attack humans.
It is said that recently this youkai hasn't moved from the hill of flowers much.
Combat Ability
Tumblr media
Completely unrelated to her abilities, she uses her umbrella and scatters flower petals to perform graceful attacks.
It is said that her umbrella is a special parasol that can largely cut ultraviolet rays (*1) and block rain as well.
It can even block danmaku.
Rather than relying on youkai abilities or magic, she often performs overwhelming physical attacks.
This class of youkai is not interested in the average human, and only pays attention to equally strong youkai or humans with special abilities.
However, when ones with power clash, both sides are aware that they cannot come to a conclusion easily
To counter this, rules will often be decided beforehand and a formal battle will take place.
By fighting with these rules, even if one could continue after losing, they must admit their loss.
Once that is done, the other side will not continue further.
That is the wisdom of youkai who have lived long.
Eyewitness Reports
"She came to the village to shop. She gives proper greetings, and she didn't seem like she's that strong, but..." (Flower Shop)
The stronger the youkai, the more polite they normally are.
But you must not cross her.
"I see her at the shrine a lot. I wonder if that shrine maiden will exterminate her..." (Anonymous)
The shrine maiden there is infamous for not doing her job.
However, it’s said that she’s exterminated this youkai several times (*2).
"I saw her at the Garden of the Sun. Her smile was terrifying, so I immediately ran away." (Anonymous)
Strong ones are usually smiling (*3).
Countermeasures
There are no countermeasures; it's impossible for ordinary humans to exterminate her. They can only be vigilant.
Luckily, she isn't interested in boring battles, so as long as you don't attack, set up a trap, or set her field of flowers on fire, you should be fine.
If you come across this youkai battling with someone else, do not get yourself involved.
However, these fights are based on certain rules, so as long as you do not disturb the fight, she'll be polite.
If you can keep your distance, it's also a good idea to watch.
Battles between non-humans are full of breathtaking beauty.
*1: As explained by the owner of Kourindou.
*2: Probably bogus.
*3: Established theory.

more random trivia and commentary, garden and newspapers edition
double this time. hopefully i’ll be able to have more of these in the future ...!
The Puppeteer’s Little Gardeners (ffnet) (ao3)
literally what started the first thought behind this fic was shortly after publishing ‘what drives us to celebrate’, i just happened to see a tweet that was someone going ‘i like alice and yuuka as a couple and wish there was more content of them’ and i thought to myself ‘huh, thats not a bad pairing at all. why dont i do just that?’ and there I went. To do that. That’s literally all there was to it. This is probably going to be the only time ever where it comes to me that simply n_n;;
that said, if you’ve read it, you could probably guess that Alice’s various dialogue and thoughts in it regarding hitting some kind of slump in her hobbies was some very blatant projecting and self-inserting on my part. I mean there’s always inevitably gonna be a little bit of that no matter what i’m writing, but here it was almost like it was coming directly from my brain feelings onto the text :P Not to say that I turned Alice into a complete self-insert or anything! i’ve always pictured her as a serious and passoinate artist of a magician, compared to the workshop technician of Marisa, the knowledgable researcher of Patchouli, or the down-to-earth free spirit Narumi. Alice’s totally the type who probably has to be reminded to just smell the flowers every now and then.
I feel like with Yuuka, I just had to make sure i never strayed away from the image of her in my mind, which consisted of basically ‘always kinda lax, all smiles, believes and understands the beauty and fragility of flowers more than anyone else’. i believe Yuuka is just genuinely nice and loves flowers! I also believe she can be scary and merciless. these can all be true!!
all the guest stars i just thought would be logical but also fun to include. Marisa and Narumi were no-brainers since they’re neighbours of Alice. I also know in fanworks, Medince has always been vaguely associated with Yuuka in some form another, and my preferred interpretation, as seen in the story, is just that they are also pleasant neighbours. I like to think they got along really well after one or two times where they just beat each other up (which is probably the norm for a lot of dynamics in gensokyo).
I think i remember feeling tempted to spend a lot more time with those other characters, maybe just adding more scenes of Alice or Yuuka talking with them (Yuuka and Narumi never do interact, wonder what that would be like??) or just having more of them going through the sunflower jungle together, but i think its probably for the best that i decided against it. Mostly because i was desperate to finish and submit the fic before christmas for completely arbitrary reasons,
then there’s Eternity Larva, the ‘villain’ of the story. I remember there being several factors that went into me deciding to use her. One is that i was having nostalgic and fond feelings of HSiFS, and wanted a chance to do something with its characters. Another is that, well... I do actually like the bonkers theory/backstory that Larva used to be some kind of super god worshipped by a cult, but only as a funny backstory kind of thing. i don’t think trying to draw drama out of that would be fun for me. I mean, she’s a cute little butterfly fairy who hangs out with Cirno. Having her awaken to dark powers is like trying to take EX Rumia seriously. however, while i was thinking of a way to introduce conflict into this story about taking care of flowers, i figured using Larva would be a fun way to just coyly hint at all that stuff, just on a surface level. As is, the super-powered fairy who turns a garden into a forest is silly enough to fit this relatively peaceful fantasy story, while providing a big enough threat to have Alice have a crisis of confidence.
I think... the florist in the human lady is just barely prominent enough to count as an original character?? one with a preestablished relation to an existing character?? that’s supposed to be a big deal or something, right? i’m old yet i still feel blindly new to the fanfiction side of the world.
anyway, This story isn’t one i think about much at all, but when i do, i think i’m pretty perfectly satisfied with having come up with it and writing it out.
A Sensational Wind Worth Stirring (ffnet) (ao3)
If there’s any character who I can link to my earliest days of being into touhou besides Seiga (and the taoists in general), it would be Aya, literaly the first touhou anything i ever remember coming across. but rather than go into that here, i’ll just say that i knew from early on, i wanted to write a story starring her, and that would give me a reason to write aloud about her place and feelings of tengu hierarchy. The story ultimately didn’t delve super deep into it, I don’t think, and more just used all that as a set-piece, but its a nice set-piece to explore. Sometimes, you just happen to want to tell a certain story in a certain place with a certain atmosphere, if only for variety’s sake !
That said, when it came to thinking of what would actually happen in such a story, uh... i’m pretty i had a big load of nothing for a long while, just a lot of emotions i wanted to convey, and what kind of personality and vibes and fun lines i wanted to be able to show off. then again, is that not how most fan ideas start out? You think of a strong and good feeling and then work backwards until there’s like an actual scene or story to accompany it? Or is that just me...
anyhow, concluding that Saitono and Mai would be the ones to provide the conflice was an inevitable no-brainer. I was still on my HSiFs kick from before, and i felt (still feel) like this pair was an underappreciated duo compared to the secret god they serve. The fact that they’ve actually gone up against Aya in canon helps a lot too for inspiration and things to reference, not that i’m the kind of person who puts too much stock into ‘canon’ in the first place though! They’re funny and they have fun being evil together, I like em a ton! I feel like i may have made Mai a little too scatterbrained in comparison to Satono though, since it feels like maybe the latter is in charge as opposed to it being a pair of equals, hmm...
Anyhow, i think things just fell into place in my mind. Having Aya’s newspaper, her greatest passoin, diminished and then threatened by her own people and then by the dancers just felt like really natural conflicts to have to me. Maybe things don’t play out quite as dramatically as they could have, but there was never gonna be much change in any status quo, but more just reaffirmation and a renewal of confidence in the character (I uh, feel like this is gonna be very consistent for most if not all the touhou fanfic i have in mind).
the big priority is always to show off personalities and relationships i think are neat of course. Hatate and Momiji show slightly different perspectives so that everything isnt only coloured by Aya, and honestly the whole chapter in the human village with Reimu was purely an excuse to dive a little into Aya as ‘the tengu closest to the village’. I’m especially happy with how i envisioned Hatate and how she came out i think, being simultaneously the friendly rival who criticises yet boosts Aya up, and also being the more starry-eyed junior compared to Aya who is more cynical than she’d let on. And i already talked about how fun the dancers were, and i like the thought of them being someone(s) who could really throw Aya off without really trying.
early on, i went back and forth a lot on what or why Satono and Mai were doing in tengu territory, and kept overthinking ideas and justifications before i decided that it is always best to keep it simple and just be like ‘they are there to cause trouble and they continue to cause trouble because they like it’. I mean what reason they offer in the story is a little more substantial than that, but i’m just glad i stuck to that compared to the overtly complex secret Okina plans I suggested to myself and worried over making sense.
The two newspaper ‘articles’ i wrote in the story proved more troublesome than I thought they’d be, for how short they are! I tried to make it similar to the format of the actual articles from Baijr or Afieu (though i might have borrowed more from the translated format courtesy of touhou wiki). Trying to keep it short enough so the gist comes across, but also making it long enough so that playing with the format in the first place seems worthwhile was a tough balance to strike for me... but i’m happy with the result.
close to final little thing to note? After I finished writing the whole thing once, I gave it a look over and decided that every line of dialogue from Aya needed to be rewritten, because i didn’t think it sounded enough like her, or was too dry. In a similar note, i originally peppered a lot of random bits of ‘ayaya’ here and there, before deciding to reign it in. Deciding that the one instance she should utter it being at the climatic fight in the press building is a decision i’m maybe just a little proud of? >_> n_n
there’s so much more to Aya and the tengu in general that i think would be neat to delve into, whether in this story or in future ones, but i don’t think i’m willing or smart enough to really dig especially deep into the related Japanese folklore to meet my own standards. I’ll say that one thing that occasionally gave me the boost to keep writing this was reading tengu-related thoughts from the blogs of friends i made during my roleplaying days. I don’t know if they’d feel awkward about me naming them, but there are two people specifically who hatched upon like hundreds of Aya and tengu-related headcanons that i thought was all sorts of inspiring to my creativity. That said! rest assured that all interpretations and headcanons featured in this story are there because they are what I like and not just there for the sake of having more detail.
