Mina: “Jonathan, I’ve noticed that you need more male friends.”
Jonathan: “I do not.”
Mina: “You always spend all your time with me and Lucy, and any time you can’t, you mope around the house waiting for me to return.”
Jonathan: “I don’t get along with men!”
Mina: “What about the journalist from The Exeter News?”
Jonathan: “That is your friend. I introduced you two, sure, but every man I introduce to you is immediately more charmed with you than with me.”
Mina: “Well, what about Mr. Hawkins?”
Jonathan: “Mina, he loves you! He likes you much more than me.”
Mina: “That is a complete lie! Surely, he sees me as an extension of you. He loves me as his daughter-in-law.”
Jonathan: “Mina, if anyone is the in-law, it’s me. You’re his pride and joy!”
Mina: “It’s not like he even raised me! Meanwhile, you were at least trained by him.”
Jonathan: “But it’s you he brags about. He grants us a loan once and suddenly all your accomplishments are a result of him being our benefactor. “Did you know Mina is a schoolmistress?” Yes, boss, I’m married to her. He sees you as his own daughter.”
Mina: “And what of you?”
Jonathan: “His clerk.”
Mina: “Well! It’s not going to happen again! I’m going to introduce you to a whole posse of men, and they’re all going to love you!”
*few days later*
Van Helsing: “Oh, dear husband of Madam Mina-”
Jonathan: *side-eyes Mina*
Mina: “... listen--”

Van Helsing: And John? What does he know of young ladies?
Seward: Hey now-
Van Helsing: John? John Seward? Couldn't find his way with a lady if you gave him a map-
Seward: I said hey now-
Van Helsing: No, no, we must send him away, this conversation is only for people like you and me. Not look of heavy mistrust for the likes of him.
Seward: Abraham pls-

Van Helsing being all secretive and silently contemplating, not daring to utter even a hint towards what he really thinks of Lucy's "illness"
vs Quincy Morris just panicking and blabbering-- dude my horse was drunk by a vampire just like this, wtf is happening to Lucy tho???

Van Helsing is a man so dedicated to his task and the way it wrecks his very soul is just heartbreaking. He is such a loving man that even after he plunges his stakes into their chests, knowing who they are and a fraction of the horrors they had done, weeps for their corrupted souls. There he is at the edge of the end still clinging to the humanity of them all.

"Come, we must see and act. Devils or no devils, or all the devils at once, it matters not; we fight him all the same," is such a raw and powerful line.
I'm just sorry it was declared because Lucy took another turn for the worse. Thanks, in part, to her mother who thought she was helping. Madam, you are not a medical professional. Please, do not touch anything.

HE FINALLY SAID IT
Van Helsing FINALLY said the v word, FINALLY told Seward what was going on...I mean he did it in a very conversational, nonchalant, Van Helsing sort of way, but! He finally let somebody in on what had happened to Lucy!
I mean this knowledge would have been helpful days and weeks ago, but at least Seward is in a position to understand and believe now... telling Arthur is gonna suck, though.
And god, when Mina finds out... Dracula fucked with the wrong woman's loved ones. He will regret this.

"You are looking pale yourself. You want a wife to nurse and look after you a bit; that you do!" As she spoke, Lucy turned crimson, though it was only momentarily, for her poor wasted veins could not stand for long such an unwonted drain to the head. The reaction came in excessive pallor as she turned imploring eyes on me. I smiled and nodded, and laid my finger on my lips; with a sigh, she sank back amid her pillows.
So, Lucy never told her mother about the three proposals. I had somewhat suspected as much, but here's confirmation. I mean, or else her mother is astonishingly tactless, but the finger over lips gesture suggests otherwise.
I just feel so interested in Lucy's relationship with her mother. She cared a lot about her liking Arthur, so she obviously wants to please her; similarly, all the effort not to worry her is not only a learned behavior but out of genuine concern. However, it also seems like they're just not super close. Neither one really confides in the other. We already knew that in regards to bad things (keeping the illnesses quiet/downplayed) but now also with what was if not actively good, at least certainly not a bad situation and definitely a notable one.
Maybe Lucy was afraid her mother would take it as bragging? I feel like it should have been pretty noticeable that all three were her suitors given how often/how they would've socialized, so either Mrs. Westenra got blinders about the son of a lord and noticed no one else, or maybe Lucy actively misled her about the other two just being Arthur's friends.
If Mrs. Westenra never knew, that means she and Lucy are not very close emotionally, or at least not to the level that Lucy ever fully relaxes her facade around her. She may always be in 'dutiful daughter, cheerful young woman' mode around her mother, and only initially confides her true feelings on any particular matter in Mina (eventually Arthur), and then only sometimes.
If this is true, it makes her isolation even worse, and it makes Lucy's single aborted attempt to seek comfort and protection from her mother even sadder somehow. It must have been a very rare occurrence, but Mrs. Westenra was too caught up in her own ilalness/hiding it to recognize the red flag. And after she failed to do so, Lucy was never going to try again - hence it getting to the point of her actively dying while Mrs. Westenra turns a somewhat blind eye.
(If I'm wrong about all this and Mrs. Westenra did know, that points to two other options. Either her illness is really severe and she is becoming absent-minded or forgetful in some way, or she just doesn't care about how rude a statement that is. The first is worrying for her health but might absolve her of some of her more dubious moments a bit, if she is generally very 'distracted' now. And the second does the opposite, implying her caring more about status or at least not being considerate of others.)
